"brave" steps in US-brokered peace negotiations, after holding talks
with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.The

the opposition Labour Party at the end of November.Israel and the
Palestinians returned to the negotiating table in July after a nearly

amid Israeli announcements of new settlement construction in the
occupied West Bank and annexed east Jerusalem, lands demanded by the
Palestinians as part of their future state.Herzog said his party,

Palestinians in 1993, is willing to help push the process forward and
would urge Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government to take bold
steps to reach a deal."The current negotiations brokered by the

meeting.
It's unclear how many passengers were on board the
train when it derailed. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the train's

mission has inspired widespread pride in China's growing technological
prowess. State television showed a live broadcast of the rocket lifting

the moon in mid-December as China's first spacecraft to make a soft
landing beyond Earth.In 2007, China launched its first moon

London (AFP) - The difference in attitudes towards the
European Union between Britain and its continental partners is widening
on both sides, a poll of people in four countries showed on Saturday.The
survey in the Observer newspaper, carried out by Opinium in Britain,
France, Germany and Poland, shows Britons regard the bloc much more
negatively.But other EU nations also increasingly think that Britain brings few benefits to the 28-nation union.British
Prime Minister David Cameron has promised an in-out referendum on
membership of the EU by the end of 2017, so long as he is re-elected in
2015.The survey showed that just 26 percent of Britons think the
EU is a "good thing" overall compared with 62 percent of Poles, 55
percent of Germans and 36 percent of French.But on the question
of whether Britain is a "positive force" in the EU, only 9 percent of
Germans, 15 percent of French and 33 percent of Poles agree.
The survey questioned more than 2,000 people in Britain and more than 1,000 in each of France, Germany and Poland.Cameron's vow to renegotiate Britain's relationship with the EU before putting the new terms to the country in his referendum has also irked European neighbours.Forty-four percent of Germans oppose giving Britain special membership terms and 16 are in favour, while in France 36 percent are against and 26 percent in favour.Poland is different, with 23 percent against and 38 percent in favour.But a so-called "Brexit" does not seem to trouble some Europeans, with only 24 percent of French saying it would have a negative effect on the EU and 36 percent of Germans, although again 51 percent of Poles said it would.
Concerns about the EU, buffeted by the eurozone crisis and worries about immigration, are not confined to Britain, though.Sixty-four percent of Britons say the EU has a negative impact on immigration but so do 59 percent of French and 42 percent of Germans, against 20 percent of Poles.

Israel Asks Germany to Return Art to Jewish Hands
Israel's deputy foreign minister urges Germany to give any Jewish-owned
art from a trove discovered in Munich to Jewish or Israeli museums if
heirs are not found.He said Israel has requested to join the German investigation into the
roughly 1,400 artworks found in the apartment of a reclusive Munich
collector last year.
German prosecutors are checking whether up to 590 works were seized by
Nazis. Several heirs of Jewish collectors persecuted by the Nazis have
already made claim to individual artworks in the collection.The collector says he inherited the works from his father, an art dealer commissioned by the Nazis.Elkin said Israel suggested Germany give any Jewish-owned art with no
locatable heirs to an institution like the Israel Museum in Jerusalem or

A rise in the polls?
In his bid to build a newly relevant party, Herzog can already point to some success. A recent Knesset Channel poll, taken after Herzog’s primary win, showed Labor rising from 15 seats to 19.But a closer look at the numbers suggests the increase is far from indicative of a broad trend. While Labor rose to 19, Tzipi Livni’s dovish Hatnua dropped two seats to just four in the new poll, and the centrist Yesh Atid dropped nine, coming in at 10 seats. The left-wing Meretz was the biggest winner, as it has been in a bevy of recent polls, more than doubling from the six seats it holds currently to 13.But what do these results mean for the left itself? It turns out, not much.In the current Knesset, the dovish coalition of Hatnua, Yesh Atid, Meretz and Labor would contain an untenable minority of just 46 Knesset seats, and Labor would not lead that coalition. Metro North train derails in NYC; 4 dead, 63 injured

of New York. The train derailed on a curved section of track in the
Bronx on Sunday morning, coming to rest just inches from the water and
causing multiple fatalities and dozens of injuries, authorities said.

the Hudson River early Sunday, killing four people and injuring 63,
officials said.The
train was en route to New York's Grand Central Station from
Poughkeepsie, N.Y., when it derailed near the Spuyten Duyvil station in

Jack Babcock, another passenger, had a similar experience. "When I woke up, we were just flipping over," Babcock told Newsday. "Glass broke, and there were trees and dirt coming through the windows."
Aerial photos taken above the scene showed several train cars laying on their sides, and one near the water along a bank of the Bronx River.The train derailed about 100 feet north of the Spuyten Duyvil station.
In July, a freight train derailed near the same station. No one was injured in that incident.In May, a Metro North train derailed in Fairfield, Conn., injuring 60 people, five of them critically.The National Transportation Safety Board was en route to the scene to begin an investigation, Cuomo said. Officials will be investigating whether speed was a factor, the MTA said.
China launches lunar probe carrying 'Jade Rabbit' moon buggy

Chinese scientists have discussed the possibility of sending a human to the moon some time after 2020.
In China's latest manned space mission in June, three astronauts spent 15 days in orbit and docked with an experimental space laboratory, part of Beijing's quest to build a working space station by 2020.

East African trade bloc approves monetary union deal

KAMPALA (Reuters) - The leaders of five East African countries signed a protocol on Saturday laying the groundwork for a monetary union within 10 years that they expect will expand regional trade.Heads of state of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, which have already signed a common market and a single customs union, say the protocol will allow them to progressively converge their currencies and increase commerce.In the run-up to achieving a common currency, the East African Community (EAC) nations aim to harmonize monetary and fiscal policies and establish a common central bank. Gulf widens between Britain and EU nations

The survey questioned more than 2,000 people in Britain and more than 1,000 in each of France, Germany and Poland.Cameron's vow to renegotiate Britain's relationship with the EU before putting the new terms to the country in his referendum has also irked European neighbours.Forty-four percent of Germans oppose giving Britain special membership terms and 16 are in favour, while in France 36 percent are against and 26 percent in favour.Poland is different, with 23 percent against and 38 percent in favour.But a so-called "Brexit" does not seem to trouble some Europeans, with only 24 percent of French saying it would have a negative effect on the EU and 36 percent of Germans, although again 51 percent of Poles said it would.
Concerns about the EU, buffeted by the eurozone crisis and worries about immigration, are not confined to Britain, though.Sixty-four percent of Britons say the EU has a negative impact on immigration but so do 59 percent of French and 42 percent of Germans, against 20 percent of Poles.

Hinting at a strike against a nuclear reactor
in Syria that Israel reportedly executed in 2007 — when Olmert was prime
minister — he said that Jerusalem has the right to act if need be but
warned that such actions need to be kept secret and not talked about.“This is not because there is no problem with
Iran. There is a problem with Iran. It is not because we don’t need to
fight it with all strength. We need to fight it with all strength,”
Olmert said.“Nobody will teach us a lesson about this — we acted and didn’t talk. Others only talk and didn’t act.”Olmert, who
was prime minister from 2006 until 2009, said he was not enthusiastic
about the terms of the interim nuclear agreement, which was signed last
week in Geneva, but added that he believes there are hidden terms that
must be studied in greater depth before Jerusalem can effectively lobby
the Americans for a better permanent agreement, which is supposed to be
signed six months after the interim deal takes effect.“I hope this will not be perceived as an
attack on the prime minister,” Olmert said. “But the state of Israel
should cease to criticize the policy of the US and the policymakers of
the United States,” he said. ”There are many other ways in which can
influence [it] in order to achieve our goals.”Olmert said Israel should refrain from leading
the international effort against Tehran’s nuclear program, and should
instead leave such a role to the US.“Israel should be a partner in this fight but
cannot and should not lead the international fight,” Olmert said. ”This
was the Sharon government’s position and the position of my government

Olmert remarked that all of Israel’s security
concerns — including those posed by Iran — could be solved by reaching a
lasting peace agreement with the Palestinians.“The key to any strategic situation in the
Middle East and the Iranian problem is to reach a peace agreement with
the Palestinians,” he said.The former prime minister also railed against
the Netanyahu government’s approval of thousands of settlement housing
units, saying such a move would only set back negotiations with the
Palestinians.“A government which announces the construction
of 5,000 new housing units is not conducting serious negotiations for
peace,” Olmert said.
Netanyahu, in Rome on Sunday for a state visit
to Italy and the Vatican, responded to Olmert’s statements saying, “In
contrast to others, when I see that interests vital to the security of
Israel’s citizens are in danger, I will not be silent.”He added: “It is very easy to be silent. It is
very easy to receive a pat on the shoulder from the international
community, to bow one’s head, but I am committed to the security of my
people,” he said, and in a subtle jab at Olmert added, “I am committed
to the future of my state and in contrast to periods in the past, we
have a loud and clear voice among the nations and we will sound it in
