Will there be animal sacrifices in the Third Temple?

The book of Ezekiel has detailed prophecies that are understood to refer to the Third Temple. Here are two verses from Chapter 40:

42 And four tables for the burnt offering, of hewn stone, one cubit and a half long, one cubit and a half wide and one cubit high; upon them they would lay the implements with which they slaughtered the burnt offering and [other] sacrifices. …

47 And he measured the Court; its length one hundred cubits and its width one hundred cubits, square, and the altar before the Temple.

Note the mention of an altar and animal sacrifices. So it seems like the answer is Yes.

Jewish groups held a mock Passover sacrifice on Thursday opposite the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The ritual slaughter was not merely a historic reenactment, but, they say, practice in advance of the reconstruction of the Temple.The practice sacrifice has been held annually for the past several years. This year organizers were unpleasantly surprised by a veto from Israel’s Veterinary Services, which refused to authorize the event.
Organizers took the matter to court, and were able to quickly get a ruling permitting the ritual.The various groups involved in the event were represented by Rabbi Yehuda Glick, who told Arutz Sheva that the ritual was carried out with as much Biblical accuracy as possible.“We took the goat, as the Torah commands, we had an altar built like the real one, and a cooking pit built according to halacha [Jewish law],” he said. “We slaughtered the goat with Leviim singing and priestly clothing, just like in the real Passover sacrifice.”
Leviim are Jews belonging to the Biblical tribe of Levi, whose members took part in Temple services.
The ritual was emotionally moving, Rabbi Glick reported. “The symbolism of standing opposite the Temple Mount and preparing for the real Passover sacrifice – it was without doubt a special moment,” he said.

Introduction

The significance and meaning of the Temple sacrificial system deserves - and requires - an entire treatise in its own right. In the Holy Temple animal sacrifice is prescribed by the Torah not only for various minor sins that were committed, but on many other occasions as well. This is not the place for a lengthy treatment of this subject. Still, since a great deal of misunderstanding does exist with regard to the true purpose of the sacrifices, we present a brief and altogether general introduction to the subject. Although intensely aware that we cannot do justice to such a sensitive and involved subject in this format, we can nonetheless attempt to clarify a number of important points.

The Concept of Sacrifice Dates to the Beginning of Time

Maimonides writes (Guide for the Perplexed, 3:32) that animal sacrifice dates back to the most ancient times, having been a common form of worship from the earliest days of man's need for religious expression and experience. He opines that the Torah incorporated this type of practice by providing for such offerings. In other words, G-d sought to give His people an avenue by which this desire may be expressed to Him, and thus made provisions for it by issuing the sacrificial commandments. Indeed, it is a common position of many great scholars and thinkers that sacrifices were among the earliest and most profound expressions of the human desire to come as close as possible to G-d. Thus the Bible records the sacrifices of Cain, Abel, and Noah.It is evident that the Jewish concept of sacrifice as it existed in the Holy Temple is widely misunderstood. For this worship functioned on many levels: ethical, moral, philosophical, mystical... and in fulfillment of the word of G-d. For although the idea of the sacrifices may seem difficult for contemporary man to accept, it is the commandment of the Holy One.Checking the definition of the word "sacrifice" in Webster's Dictionary, we begin to see a conceptual gap in our thinking which may help us expose the cause behind much of the misunderstanding. For the English the verb "sacrifice" means something entirely different:

However, the Hebrew word for "sacrifice" (korban, le-hakriv) is from the same root as "to come near, to approach. . . . to become closely involved in a relationship with someone." For this is meant to be the essence of the experience which the bearer of the sacrifice undergoes. Indeed, it is unfortunate that no word in the English language can adequately render the idea behind the Hebrew word korban. We allow ourselves to use the word "sacrifice" for lack of a better word, but it is a highly unsuccessful attempt at translation; it could even be called unfortunate. The idea of a sacrifice or offering seems to indicate a gift or present; giving up something of value for another's benefit, or going without something of value yourself, for the benefit of that other.None of this gift-giving idea is present in the idea of the korban. First of all, it is a word that never carries a connotation of a present or gift, and is used exclusively by the Bible in the context of man's relationship with G-d. Thus its true meaning can only be grasped through its root... the concept of coming close.If the definition of the korban is "to come closer," then the goal of the Temple sacrifices is nothing less than the aim of dedicating human life to a higher sphere of awareness... closer to the Creator and the source of all life. The Temple sacrifice is not an idea of giving something up or losing something of value; it strives for nearness to G-d. For as King David prayed in the book of Psalms (73:28), "but as for me, nearness to G-d is good" - for the Jew, nearness to G-d is the truest, the highest, the only conception what goodness really is. Without this aspect to his life, without this G-dly relationship which uplifts his physical existence and imbues his life with a sense of connection to the Divine, he feels himself to be like an animal, devoid of that which makes him into a human being: the spark of his G-dly soul... without this he feels similar to the animal before him, on the altar. In a sense, what happens to the offering is also taking place within the heart and mind of he who brings it... 

A Deeper Level of Understanding: Levels of Conflict Within Creation

Existence contains four distinct levels: inanimate, vegetable, animal, and man. These levels are not only physical, but spiritual as well; every aspect of the created universe possesses a spiritual essence. All these elements are locked in a mortal struggle with each other, for each strives to rise to the next level, and thus become closer to the source. The sages taught that the only time when all of these basic forces are rectified and in harmony with each other is in the Holy Temple. For in the Temple service, all four aspects of creation unite together in the service of G-d, and thus reach their full potential in fulfilling His will and sanctifying His name. The priest who offers each sacrifice represents humanity; the animal offered, the animal kingdom; the flour, frankincense, libations etc. represent the world of plants; and even the inanimate level is represented... for salt must be a part of every sacrifice. Thus when the Temple stands, all of creation functions in harmony. This is one aspect of how the Temple brings peace to the world: "...and in this place, I will grant peace, says the L-rd of Hosts" (Haggai 2:9).

Man: The Greatest Contradiction of All

In all of creation, man is unique because he is a living contradiction. His life is a tightrope walk between the physical and spiritual worlds, and throughout his life, he finds himself locked in constant struggle between the pull of these two opposing forces. His body, hewn from the earth, is the seat of the darker, physical nature that tries to pull him down, like gravity, in that direction. His G-dly soul, which is a very part of G-dliness itself, seeks to elevate him by subjugating his physical side to the spiritual.

The Offering is for Man's Benefit

This is part of the concept of the Temple sacrifices as well. For when an individual sinned and brought a korbon, the death and burning of the animal on the Temple altar gave him a strong visual symbolization of what he himself deserves, were G-d to judge him severely, with the exacting scrutiny of unmitigated justice. The Torah teaches us that we are able to approach the identity of G-d and have some knowledge of Him through His names, or attributes. In this light it is instructive to note that throughout the book of Leviticus, in reference to the korbonot-offerings, G-d never refers to Himself with the Name Elohim, which denotes the Divine attribute of strict justice. For when connected to the sacrifices this could be misconstrued to indicate that the G-d who commands these offerings does so as a vengeful, bloodthirsty deity who demands a sacrifice as reparation. But nothing could be further from the truth; such imagery is nothing more than the illusion of a heathen vision of G-d, an unforgiving G-d who accepts the struggling death throws of an animal as a substitute for the forfeited life of a human being. But the only Name that the Bible associates with the offerings to G-d is HaShem, YHVH - signaling the attribute of Divine love and mercy.

The G-d of Love Desires Man to Refine His Own Humanity

Precisely because He is the G-d of love, not the G-d of punishment and death, He has prepared the sacrificial system as a method of restoring man's moral and spiritual life, and purifying that life. The sacrifice represents the death of man's physical side, the side of him that will die when kept at a distance from G-d. But if he will bring his entire self into the service of G-d, he will connect with his true purpose, namely the empowerment of his spiritual nature through the rectification of his own animal urges. Thus he gives satisfaction to his Creator; the "pleasing aroma" of the sacrifices is the very fact that man refines his own humanity.The experience of bringing this sacrifice for the individual was thus comparable to a vicarious taste of death, and it helped to reconcile the animal and spiritual natures within him.

The Sacrifices are Meaningless Without Repentance

It was only in the Holy Temple that the full spiritual nature of this process could be appreciated. It is of crucial importance to be aware that by no means did the sacrifices serve as an end in themselves. For example, the sin offering, which was a minority of all the offerings brought in the Temple, was powerless to atone for sin unless it was accompanied by a thought of resolute, true repentance. Without repentance, the sacrifice was invalid; the korbon itself was only a means by which man could arouse himself to repent. We are likewise taught that G-d Himself did not require the sacrifice but for the betterment of the crown of His creation, man; however He would prefer that man not sin, and not be necessitated to bring any offering (BT Berakoth 22:A).

The Creator Raised Man Above the Animals

Today, there are those who refer disparagingly to the "cult" of Temple sacrifice; they find the concept repugnant. Their viewpoint is understandable, since their entire basis for understanding these lofty concepts comes from a standpoint that is totally pagan. Those of this ilk view the sacrificial system as brutal because they have no conception of a G-d who beckons to us to raise ourselves above the animals and dedicate ourselves to Him. For man is at the center of creation; all else which G-d created was brought into existence solely to help aid man in his quest for spiritual perfection. 

Battle escalates over kosher slaughter in France

Alleged death threats and accusations of anti-Semitism follow proposal that religiously approved meat be labeled separately

PARIS — In the wake of Poland’s ban on kosher slaughter, France is awaiting the outcome of a battle of its own.After proposing special labels on July 17 for halal and kosher meat, Sen. Sylvie Goy-Chavent has encountered fierce criticism in France and Israel.Accused of anti-Semitism by Jonathan-Simon Sellem, the editor-in-chief of JSS News — the main French-language media outlet in Israel — Goy-Chavent filed a police complaint last month over death threats she says resulted.Already an established opponent of ritual slaughter, Goy-Chavent became a participant in the latest flare-up after she was asked by the Senate to investigate the French meat industry following Europe’s horsemeat scandal in early 2013.Goy-Chavent’s work drew her attention to a loophole in French law that allows animals to be slaughtered for kosher and halal meat — unlike all other meat products — without first being stunned, since Judaism and Islam require animals to be conscious before their necks are cut.“Instead of calling for an outright ban on ritual slaughter — which I very well could have done — I opted for compromise,” Goy-Chavent told the Times of Israel, “and asked for meat to be labeled in an non-stigmatizing way, which would indicate the way the animal was slaughtered.”The move generated criticism at a pair of Senate hearings even before Goy-Chavent issued her proposal.

During a May appearance before lawmakers, Mohammed Moussaoui, a former president of the French Council of the Muslim Faith, argued that separate labels on meat would have to be “fair,” and “never stigmatize Muslims or Jews.”That argument was made again during a second hearing on June 26 by Rabbi Bruno Fiszon, an expert on kosher slaughter, and Joel Mergui, the president of the Central Israelite Consistory of France, which provides religious services to Jewish organizations.“If consumers are told that the meat they buy wasn’t stunned before slaughter, and there is at the same time a campaign seeking to convince people that ritual slaughter is synonymous with barbarism, then we are against this policy,” said Mergui.Both Jews and Muslims argue that ritual slaughter, which produced 14 percent of French meat in 2010, is no less humane than modern methods.Mergui also pointed out what he considers a double standard in the Senate investigation, which focused on ritual slaughter but left aside hunting and bullfighting, which remain legal.“Europe would honor itself if it viewed ritual slaughter as a legitimate method of slaughter, not as a debasement of the law. We are fed up with being a debasement,” he said.Although the debate on ritual slaughter has simmered for several years — in 2011, then-Prime Minister Francois Fillon declared “these ancestral traditions don’t mean much” in a “modern society” — the latest round came to national attention on July 13, when Sellem’s website published an article with a headline that suggested Goy-Chavent might be anti-Semitic. The essay noted a letter in Le Parisien last year in which Goy-Chavent urged President Francois Hollande to outlaw religious slaughter, as well as her call in the past for separate labeling for products from the West Bank.“But no, she isn’t focused on Israel,” Sellem concluded. “And no, she isn’t anti-Semitic. Well . . . .”The French senator subsequently decided to press charges against the website. She said she’s received death threats from Internet users, without mentioning where they appeared.Among the most violent comments on the JSS website, one featured a call to “slash her neck and see how long it takes her to bleed.”

In a public letter addressed to Hollande and published on her Facebook page July 27, Goy-Chavent wrote that many people, including Parliament members, have advised her “to be extremely cautious, and even mentioned a possible intervention from a foreign country’s special services,” interpreted by many as a reference to Israel.To Sellem, the reaction was “over the top.”“I admit that the comment posted on the website is not particularly refined, and I firmly condemned the torrent of insults against her, but clearly she has to take a step backward and look at this situation from a distance,” he told the Times of Israel. “This comment was ironic — it was certainly not a death threat.”“I don’t care much about labeling kosher and halal meat, but I’m worried that this is just the first step before an outright ban on ritual slaughter,’ Sellem said, referring to last year’s letter in Le Parisien.“First comes kosher meat, and then what? Circumcision? How about outlawing prayer books in Hebrew because it’s not secular enough? ” he asked.Since the most recent uproar began, animal welfare activists including the Brigitte Bardot Foundation — which condemns ritual slaughter as cruel — have expressed support for Goy-Chavent. In a case of strange bedfellows, so has the extreme-right National Front party.The legislator, for her part, seems interested in lowering tensions, expressing regret to the Times of Israel for comments in which she dismissed defenders of ritual slaughter as “all Jews.”“I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to all Jewish people who have been hurt by what I said. This was not my intention,” Goy-Chavent commented. “But the insults that were hurled at me have been dreadful.”

The oil company calls it “seepage.” Environmentalists describe it as a “blow out.” Either way, the leak at the oil sands project in Northern Alberta — which has spilled 280,022 gallons of oil across 51 acres since June — is stoking the controversy over the energy source. “This mess is a symptom of the problems with the reckless expansion of the tar sands,” said Anthony Smith, a lawyer in the international programs division of the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington. “Environmental regulations have just not caught up.” … The cause of the oil spill at the Royal Canadian Air Force base in Cold Lake, Alberta, remains unclear. The company that owns the project, Canadian Natural Resources, blames abandoned wells in the area. Environmentalists point to fundamental flaws with the company’s process. Until they find the source of the problem, oil continues to leak at four locations. The spill, modest by historical standards, is manageable for the company, which says it expects to spend $60 million on cleanup and investigation. But already the leak is spoiling the landscape and hurting wildlife. It has killed 71 frogs, 27 birds and 23 mammals, including two beavers, according to the company.At the site, Canadian Natural Resources uses an approach that is increasingly common for oil sands ventures. In a process similar to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, Canadian Natural injects hot steam at high pressures into underground oil sands deposits. The heat liquefies the bitumen and the pressure separates it from the surrounding sand. The process allows the bitumen to flow to the surface through wells. Canadian Natural has been reluctant to acknowledge the spill, going public only after The Toronto Star published an article based on photographs and documents from a government scientist who was not identified by name. But in a conference call with analysts last week, Steve W. Laut, the company’s president, repeatedly defended its process, saying it had not caused the spill.Mr. Laut said that the amount of pressure needed to force bitumen through the protective rock layer “is significantly higher” than that used by the company. Instead, he argued that the oil was seeping up through inadequately sealed, abandoned oil wells in the area. “You cannot have these failures without a well bore failure,” he told the analysts. Canadian Natural did not respond to requests for comment on Thursday. But the Alberta Energy Regulator has swiftly disputed Mr. Laut’s statement. “We do not currently have the evidence or data to support any conclusions as to the cause of the incident and look forward to reviewing C.N.R.L.’s information supporting their conclusions on the root cause of the releases,” Jim Ellis, the chief executive of the newly formed regulatory body, said in a statement. The regulator has ordered some of Canadian National’s operations near Cold Lake suspended and others reduced until the cleanup is complete and a cause for the spill is determined.A study released in January by Alberta’s previous regulator about a 2009 spill at the same site also appears to undermine the company’s contention that old wells are the source of the problem. While that study did not determine a cause for the 2009 spill, its authors said that they believed that the protective layer of rock “was likely breached by high-pressure steam injection not related to a well bore issue.” The study added that the high pressure of the steam that Canadian Natural used probably contributed to the 2009 spill and that the steam and pressure may have created weaknesses in the protective rock layer and provided an escape route for bitumen. “There’s a pretty strong incentive for the company to portray this as a technical issue because technical issues can be fixed, unlike fundamental issues,” said Chris Severson-Baker, the managing director of the Pembina Institute, an environmental group based in Calgary, Alberta. AER updated the total volume released on Friday to 1060 cubic metres – just over 6600 barrels of oil or more than 1 million litres. The volume of the Kalamazoo tar sands disaster, the largest and most expensive on shore oil spill in US history, was around 3 million litres. The original incident report claimed only 28 cubic metres of oil were released. “That volume grows every day, so it changes every day,” said Tobin. A recent Alberta Primetime exclusive shows a large body of water affected by subsurface seepage of bitumen. CNRL incident commander Kirk Skocylas says one area of the spill is emerging from “a subsurface source” and “because it is within the water body we physically can’t see where it is coming up.”

Dead birds fall 'like raindrops' in Winnipeg's North End

Animal experts are trying to figure out what may have killed dozens of black birds that fell from the sky in Winnipeg's North End on Wednesday.Conservation officers have picked up more than 50 dead birds near the intersection of King Street and Dufferin Avenue, while the Winnipeg Humane Society took in 11 birds that were still alive.Erika Anseeuw, the humane society's director of animal health, said all the living birds were reasonably bright and active, although they cannot stand or fly.The birds will be euthanized and sent to a pathology lab for autopsies.Anseeuw would not speculate on what exactly may have killed the birds, but she suspects they may have accidentally gotten into something."My suspicion is this is what it's going to be rather than any kind of apocalyptic foretelling of birds falling from the sky," she said in an interview with CBC Radio's Up to Speed program.Possible factors may include exposure to disease or toxins, Anseeuw said.

'Falling out of the trees'

People in the area told CBC News hundreds of black birds — possibly grackles — began flocking in a "bizarre manner" atop vehicles, in the trees and near businesses starting at around 7:30 or 8 a.m.
"There was probably, I would say … almost up to the thousand birds in the trees, and then I was looking up and then one fell right in front of me," said Tanya Lee Viner.Susan Tiganagis, who works at a Main Street chip shop, said she saw a "blanket of black" in the lane behind the store.
"My husband said, like, 'This is a Hitchcock movie.' It's crazy!" Tiganagis said."They were just dizzy. They didn't know where they were going. I've never seen them act like that," she added.Later that morning, dozens of birds started dropping from the sky. The streets near the intersection of King and Dufferin became littered with bird carcasses."They were literally falling out of the trees and they were still dying," Tiganagis said."You couldn't step anywhere without stepping on a bird."Workers at a nearby community services agency said they saw dozens of birds falling from the sky at around 10:30 a.m."It was like raindrops falling," said one employee.The workers said they called the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba Conservation and Environment Canada to see if anyone would investigate what happened.Finally, a passing police officer called conservation officers and authorities arrived on Wednesday afternoon to pick up the deceased birds.

Three tornadoes touched down in Ontario during Wednesday’s stormy weather, Environment Canada has confirmed.The twisters touched down in Orillia, Carnarvon, and Arthur-Grand Valley, a damage survey team concluded.They are the 12th, 13th, and 14th tornadoes confirmed in Ontario during 2013.No one was injured and there was no signficant damage from the tornadoes – two of which scored the lowest EF-0 on the five point Fujita scale.The third has not been rated.At one point, parts of the GTA were under tornado warnings, but they were brief and didn’t result in any twisters.With files from The Canadian Press

Missouri flooding forces campground evacuation, water rescues

HOLLISTER, Mo. — Flash flooding is prompting water rescues and damage to buildings in southwest Missouri.

 

Flash flooding was reported in southern Barry and Stone counties, including Roaring River State Park, after an estimated 6 inches of rain fell early Thursday.Western Taney County Fire Chief Chris Berndt told KYTV rescue workers have evacuated three areas along Turkey Creek, where waters washed one or two mobile homes downstream. Berndt says several businesses and homes in Hollister have water damage.The Southern Stone County Fire Protection District reports it has evacuated 22 people from a campground near Blue Eye. Campgrounds in Roaring River State Park in Barry County also are being evacuated. No injuries have been reported.Interstate 44 near Jerome reopened Thursday. More than 40 roads, mostly in central Missouri, are closed.| The Associated Press

Every August, just when many people go vacationing in the country where skies are dark, the best-known meteor shower, makes its appearance.
This year, the Perseid meteor shower is expected to reach its peak overnight on Monday (Aug. 12), and there are some key tips to keep in mind for your "shooting stars" viewing.

Peak activity for the Perseids is unfortunately predicted for the daylight hours across North America, so stargazers with clear skies are encouraged to seek out the meteor display during the pre-dawn hours of Monday and again during the early morning hours of Tuesday (Aug. 13). At these times, the absence of bright moonlight can maximize your chances of spotting a meteor. [See 2013 Perseid meteor shower photos by stargazers (Gallery)] At mid-northern latitudes, moonset on Sunday evening (Aug. 11) occurs at about 10:15 p.m. local time and around 10:50 p.m. the following night. Since dawn doesn't break until around 4:30 a.m. local time that means there will be between five-and a-half to six hours of dark, moonless skies for the two best viewing nights for the Perseids.Take full advantage of this year's favorable lunar circumstances. Next year, a bright waning gibbous moon will flood the after-midnight night sky with its light and seriously hinder the Perseids. 

Perseids: the remains of a comet
We know today that the Perseid meteor shower is actually created by the remains of the Comet Swift-Tuttle. Discovered back in 1862, this comet takes approximately 130 years to circle the sun. And in much the same way that the Comet Tempel-Tuttle leaves a trail of debris along its orbit to produce the Leonid meteor shower of November, Comet Swift-Tuttle produces a similar debris trail along its orbit to cause the Perseids display.Every year during mid-August, the Earth passes near the orbit of Swift-Tuttle and crosses the comet's debris stream. The comet material left behind then ram's into our atmosphere at approximately 37 miles per second (about 133,000 mph/214,000 km/h) to create bright streaks of light in our mid-summer night skies.
Comet Swift-Tuttle made its most recent appearance more than 20 years ago, in December 1992. Its orbit is highly elongated and as such it takes roughly 130 years to make one trip around the sun.For several years before and after its 1992 return, the Perseids were a far more prolific shower, appearing to produce brief outbursts of as many as several hundred meteors per hour, many of which were dazzlingly bright and spectacular. The most likely reason was that the Perseids parent comet was itself passing through the inner solar system and that the streams of Perseid meteoroids in the comet's vicinity were larger and more thickly clumped together, leading to brighter meteors as well as much-higher-than-normal meteor rates.
But now, with the comet now having retreated nearly 3.2 billion miles (5.1 billion km) back out into space, Perseid activity has returned to normal.  

Perseid meteor clumps
A very good meteor shower will produce about one meteor per minute for a given observer under a dark country sky. However, any light pollution from city lights or moonlight considerably reduces the count.
The August Perseids are among the strongest of the readily observed annual meteor showers, and at maximum activity nominally yield 90 or 100 meteors per hour. However, observers with exceptional skies often record even larger numbers. But while 90 to 100 meteors per hour correspond to at least one meteor per minute, keep in mind that this is only a statistical average. In reality, what usually is seen is what some have called, "the clumping effect."  Sometimes you'll see two or even three Perseids streak across the sky in quick succession, all within less than minute. This is usually followed by a lull of several minutes or more, before the sky suddenly bears fruit once again.

When and where to look
Typically during an overnight watch, the Perseids are capable of producing a number of bright, flaring and fragmenting meteors, which leave fine trains in their wake. On the night of shower maximum, the Perseid radiant is not far from the famous "Double Star Cluster" of Perseus. Low in the northeast during the early evening, it rises higher in the sky until morning twilight ends observing. Shower streakers appearing close to the radiant have foreshortened tracks; those appearing farther away are often brighter, have longer tracks, and move faster across the sky. About five to 10 of the meteors seen in any given hour will not fit this geometric pattern, and may be classified as sporadic or as members of some other (minor) shower.
Perseid meteor shower activity increases sharply in the hours after midnight, so plan your observing times accordingly. We are then looking more nearly face-on into the direction of the Earth’s motion as it orbits the sun, and the radiant is also higher up.

Making a meteor count is as simple as lying in a lawn chair or on the ground and marking on a clipboard whenever a "shooting star" is seen. Watching for the Perseids consists of lying back, gazing up into the stars, and waiting.  It is customary to watch the point halfway between the radiant (which will be rising in the northeast sky) and the zenith, though it's all right for your gaze to wander. Meteor counts should be made on several nights before and after the predicted maximum, so the behavior of the shower during off-peak nights can be determined. Usually, good numbers of meteors should be seen on the preceding and following nights as well. The shower is generally at one-quarter strength one or two nights before and after maximum.
A few Perseids can be seen as much as two weeks before and a week after the peak. The extreme limits, in fact, are said to extend from July 17 to Aug. 24, though an occasional one might be seen almost anytime during the month of August. [Early Perseid Meteor Shower Fireballs Seen by NASA (Video)] 

No danger in watching
Many years ago, a phone call came into New York's Hayden Planetarium. The caller sounded concerned after hearing a radio announcement of an upcoming Perseid meteor display and wanted to know if it would be dangerous to stay outdoors on the night of the peak of the shower (perhaps assuming there was a danger of getting hit). These meteoroids, however, are no bigger than sand grains or pebbles, have the consistency of cigar ash and are consumed many miles above our heads.  The caller was passed along to the Planetarium's Chief Astronomer who commented that there are only two dangers from observing the Perseid meteor shower: getting drenched with dew and falling asleep! August is also the month of "The Tears of St. Lawrence," which has a historic link to the Perseids.  Laurentius, a Christian deacon, is said to have been martyred by the Romans in 258 AD on an iron outdoor stove. It was in the midst of this torture that Laurentius cried out: "I am already roasted on one side and, if thou wouldst have me well cooked, it is time to turn me on the other."The saint’s death was commemorated on his feast day, Aug. 10. King Phillip II of Spain built his monastery place the "Escorial," on the plan of the holy gridiron. And the abundance of shooting stars seen annually between approximately Aug. 8 and 14 have come to be known as St. Lawrence's "fiery tears."Whether you plan to make detailed meteor counts or just lie back and watch nature put on a show, there should be plenty to during the predawn hours of Aug. 12 and 13. The Edward Snowden ‘Solar Flare Killshot’ Hoax

The Internet is ablaze with yet another baseless conspiracy theory that only serves to distract from real cover-ups and issues of genuine significance – the hoax that NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden recently warned of a “solar flare killshot’ set to wipe out hundreds of millions of people in September.

According to the original article, “Edward Snowden, hacker-fugitive and former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor, revealed Tuesday that a series of solar flares is set to occur in September, killing hundreds of millions of people. Documents provided by Snowden prove that, as of 14 years ago, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) remote viewers knew that the event was inevitable. Ever since, the world’s governments have quietly been trying to prepare for the sweeping global famine to result.”The story has since gone viral, appearing on countless forums and websites and attracting thousands upon thousands of comments.

Like all popular hoaxes, the story has a thin veneer of authenticity. The sun is set to exhibit some strange behavior as a result of a magnetic field flip that occurs around once every 11 years. This will cause a “feverish” peak in solar activity, leading to more solar flares and coronal mass ejections, potentially disrupting satellites and power grids on earth but not leading to the slaughter of hundreds of millions of people.

Given that there are so many actual cover-ups, scandals and issues of real significance that we could be concentrating on, it’s really quite disappointing that so many people have wasted their energy on something that is so transparently false. The hoax also serves to distract from Snowden’s authentic revelations about NSA surveillance.The source of the story can be traced back to ‘The Internet Chronicle’, which if you read the site’s ‘about’ page is clearly a satirical website which disseminates false and overtly ludicrous stories.

The website jokes that it originated, “After crash landing in an asteroid December 30th, 1976, the alien husks of Chronicle editors rapidly adapted to Earth climates and bacterial flora. They are able to survive naturally in the wild and reproduce freely.”“Receiving tweets twice daily via fax from religious advisers impregnates our right-wing furnace of hate, enabling us to bring you the most horrifyingly sensational headlines you’ve ever seen, or your money back – guaranteed!” states the website.And if that wasn’t enough to convince you that the website is a hoax, just take a look at the other headlines featured on the front page, many of which are based on bizarre manufactured stories involving Edward Snowden.

Other hoax stories appear with headlines like ‘Paula Deen commits suicide at 66′ and ‘Wendy’s unveils new hacker theme for restaurants’.The gullibility of thousands upon thousands of people in falling for such a patent hoax because they didn’t spend 30 seconds checking the source only provides the mainstream media with more ammunition to shoot down very real cover-ups and conspiracies, such as the death of Michael Hastings, by lumping in genuine issues with baseless conspiracy theories such as the Edward Snowden ‘solar killshot’ hoax.

The smallest electronic circuits, such as those in computers’ central processing units, will be the most vulnerable.Snowden said FEMA and the National Disaster Reduction Center of China have been taking steps for 14 years in light of the findings of Project Stargate. FEMA’s own documents, provided by Snowden, lay out how the organization plans to round up tens of millions of the poorest Americans for housing at secure locations “to better facilitate feeding and provision of consumer goods.”Snowden, for years a CIA contractor, released testimonials from hundreds of remote viewers. Many of those remote viewers are still on the payroll of the governments of the United States and the Russian Federation. After Aaron Smith, 26, struck Katie Lentz, 19, in a head-on car crash on Sunday morning, authorities claim they began a long rescue process. After 60 minutes of trying to get Lentz out of the vehicle (she was pinned between the steering wheel and the seat), rescue crews, at Lentz's request, prayed out loud for the trapped woman.And that's when a mystery priest allegedly appeared. According to accounts, he came out of nowhere and brought intense calm upon the situation."He came up and approached the patient, and offered a prayer," New London Fire Chief Raymond Reed told KHQA-TV. "It was a Catholic priest who had anointing oil with him. A sense of calmness came over her, and it did us as well."Considering how many people were at the scene and interacting with the mystery faith leader, the story is a fascinating one.
"I can't be for certain how it was said, but myself and another firefighter, we very plainly heard that we should remain calm, that our tools would now work and that we would get her out of that vehicle," the firefighter added.Now here's where things get weird. After another fire department showed up, the rescue proceeded easily and the tools worked, as promised. But when nearly a dozen firefighters turned around to thank the priest, he was gone; the road was empty. Considering that the road was blocked off for a quarter of a mile during the rescue and that no cars were around, the scenario, on the surface, seems a bit bizarre.Lentz's friends and family want to thank the priest, but, so far, he's nowhere to be found."Where did this guy come from?" Travis Wiseman said, speaking rhetorically about the faith leader . "We're looking for the priest and so far, no one has seen him. Whether it was a priest as an angel or an actual angel, he was an angel to all those and to Katie."Smith has been charged with a DWI, second degree assault and failure to drive on the right side of the road. (Reuters) - Highly radioactive water from Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant is pouring out at a rate of 300 tonnes a day, officials said on Wednesday, as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ordered the government to step in and help in the clean-up.The revelation amounted to an acknowledgement that plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) has yet to come to grips with the scale of the catastrophe, 2 1/2 years after the plant was hit by a huge earthquake and tsunami. Tepco only recently admitted water had leaked at all.

Calling water containment at the Fukushima Daiichi station an "urgent issue," Abe ordered the government for the first time to get involved to help struggling Tepco handle the crisis.The leak from the plant 220 km (130 miles) northeast of Tokyo is enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool in a week. The water is spilling into the Pacific Ocean, but it was not immediately clear how much of a threat it poses.As early as January this year, Tepco found fish contaminated with high levels of radiation inside a port at the plant. Local fishermen and independent researchers had already suspected a leak of radioactive water, but Tepco denied the claims.Tetsu Nozaki, the chairman of the Fukushima fisheries federation said he had only heard of the latest estimates of the magnitude of the seepage from media reports.Environmental group Greenpeace said Tepco had "anxiously hid the leaks" and urged Japan to seek international expertise."Greenpeace calls for the Japanese authorities to do all in their power to solve this situation, and that includes increased transparancy...and getting international expertise in to help find solutions," Dr. Rianne Teule of Greenpeace International said in an emailed statement.In the weeks after the disaster, the government allowed Tepco to dump tens of thousands of tonnes of contaminated water into the Pacific in an emergency move.But the escalation of the crisis raises the risk of an even longer and more expensive clean-up, already forecast to take more than 40 years and cost $11 billion.The admission further dents the credibility of Tepco, criticised for its failure to prepare for the tsunami and earthquake, for a confused response to the disaster and for covering up shortcomings."We think that the volume of water (leaking into the Pacific) is about 300 tonnes a day," said Yushi Yoneyama, an official with the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, which oversees energy policy.Tatsuya Shinkawa, a director in METI's Nuclear Accident Response Office, told reporters the government believed water had been leaking for two years, but Yoneyama told Reuters it was unclear how long the water had been leaking at the current rate.Shinkawa described the water as "highly" contaminated.
The water is from the area between the crippled reactors and the ocean, where Tepco has sought to block the flow of contaminated water by chemically hardening the soil.Tetsu Nozaki, head of the Fukushima fisheries federation called for action to end the spillage."If the water was indeed leaking out at 300 tonnes a day for more than two years, the radiation readings should be far worse," Nozaki told Reuters. "Either way, we have asked Tepco to stop leaking contaminated water into the ocean."
ABE STEPS IN
Abe ordered his government into action. The contaminated water was "an urgent issue to deal with", he told reporters after a meeting of a government task force on the disaster."Rather than relying on Tokyo Electric, the government will take measures," he said after instructing METI Minister Toshimitsu Motegi to ensure Tepco takes appropriate action.The prime minister stopped short of pledging funds to address the issue, but the ministry has requested a budget allocation, an official told Reuters.The Nikkei newspaper said the funds would be used to freeze the soil to keep groundwater out of reactor buildings - a project estimated to cost up to 40 billion yen ($410 million).Tepco's handling of the clean-up has complicated Japan's efforts to restart its 50 nuclear power plants. All but two remain shut since the disaster because of safety concerns.That has made Japan dependent on expensive imported fuels.An official from the newly created nuclear watchdog told Reuters on Monday that the highly radioactive water seeping into the ocean from Fukushima was creating an "emergency" that Tepco was not containing on its own.Abe on Wednesday asked the regulator's head to "do his best to find out the cause and come up with effective measures".Tepco pumps out some 400 tonnes a day of groundwater flowing from the hills above the nuclear plant into the basements of the destroyed buildings, which mixes with highly irradiated water used to cool the fuel that melted down in three reactors.Tepco is trying to prevent groundwater from reaching the plant by building a "bypass", but recent spikes of radioactive elements in sea water prompted the utility to reverse denials and acknowledge that tainted water is reaching the sea.Tepco and the industry ministry have been working since May on a proposal to freeze the soil to prevent groundwater from leaking into the reactor buildings.Similar technology is used in subway construction, but Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said that the vast scale of Tepco's attempt was "unprecedented in the world."The technology was proposed by Kajima Corp, , a construction company already heavily involved in the clean-up.Experts say maintaining the ground temperatures for months or years would be costly. The plan is to freeze a 1.4 km (nearly one mile) perimeter around the four damaged reactors by drilling shafts into the ground and pumping coolant through them."Right now there are no details (of the project yet). H7N9 virus can pass between humans: Study

Research published in the British Medical Journal analyzing a family cluster of cases of H7N9 infection in eastern China gives the strongest evidence yet that the virus can pass between people.

Scientists found it was very likely the H7N9 virus "transmitted directly from the index patient to his daughter."Experts commenting on the research said it provided "a timely reminder of the need to remain extremely vigilant.""The threat posed by H7N9 has by no means passed," James Rudge and Richard Coker of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said in a commentary in the journal.The scientists who led the study stressed, however, that the virus has not yet gained the ability to transmit from person to person efficiently -- meaning the risk is very low that it could cause a human pandemic in its current form.The new bird flu virus, which was unknown in humans until February, has so far infected at least 133 people in China and Taiwan, killing 43 of them, according to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) data.Most cases have been in people who had visited live poultry markets or had close contact with live poultry in seven to 10 days before falling ill.The BMJ study, lead by Chang-jun Bao at the Jiangsu Province Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, analysed a family cluster of two H7N9 patients -- a father and daughter -- in Eastern China in March 2013.The first "index" patient -- a 60-year-old man -- regularly went to a live poultry market and fell ill five to six days after his last exposure to poultry.He was admitted to hospital on March 11. When his symptoms became worse, he was transferred to an intensive care unit (ICU) on March 15 but died of multi-organ failure on May 4, the study reported.The second patient, his healthy 32-year-old daughter, had no known exposure to live poultry but provided direct bedside care for her father in the hospital before he went to intensive care.She developed symptoms six days after her last contact with her father and went into hospital on March 24. She was moved to the ICU on March 28 and died of multi-organ failure on April 24.Strains of the virus isolated from samples taken from each patient were "almost genetically identical" -- a strong suggestion that the virus was transmitted directly from father to daughter, the researchers said."To our best knowledge, this is the first report of probable transmissibility of the novel virus person-to-person with detailed epidemiological, clinical and virological data," they wrote.
