Mahmoud Abbas met with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Wednesday
on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit in
Cairo and thanked him for supporting the Palestinians’ November UN
statehood bid.“I thank Iran for supporting the Palestinian
move to achieve the status of observer state at the UN,” Abbas said

Ali Khamenei claimed that a Palestinian bid for statehood at the UN was

Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi on Tuesday backed a call by the
leader of Syria's main opposition group for talks with the Damascus
regime aimed at ending nearly 23 months of bloodshed in the country, AFP reported.Arabi also offered to play a role in any negotiations for a
democratic transition in Syria, where tens of thousands of people have
been killed in the fighting between rebels and President Bashar
al-Assad's forces.According to AFP, he expressed hope that "the Syrian government
would respond positively to the proposal" made by Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib,
saying it would “take advantage of every opportunity to break the cycle
of violence and to end the bloodshed.”Arabi appealed for a transition agreement for "real change that meets
the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom, democracy,
social justice and human dignity".The bloc was ready to "provide all the support... needed to
facilitate the holding of dialogue and help the Syrians out of the
tunnel of this crisis, and spare it and the region the dangers of its painful consequences," he added, according to AFP.Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib, head of the opposition umbrella group the National Coalition, announced last week he was willing to hold talks with the Assad regime, subject to conditions including the release of 160,000 detainees.On Monday he urged Assad's regime to respond positively to his call for talks, saying, "The ball is now in the regime's court. SUICIDE CAR BOMB
A bomb destroyed part of the back wall of the military intelligence compound near the Roman-era ruins in the city and then a suicide car bomber drove through, detonating the vehicle and destroying parts of the facility, activists in Palmyra said.They said it was not immediately clear how many people had been killed in the blast and clashes which followed. Video footage, which could not be immediately verified, showed a large cloud of thick smoke rising in the city."The first car bomb struck at around six in the morning. The second one, which caused the larger explosion, broke through into the compound 10 minutes later," activist Abu al-Hassan said from the city.He said tanks stationed in the compound fired shells in response into an adjacent residential neighborhood, killing several civilians.Roadblocks across the city also came under attack.The state news agency said two "suicide terrorists" blew up cars packed with explosives near a garage in a residential district, killing and wounding several people. microchip may someday find themselves fetching a hefty fine, the British
government said Wednesday.All dogs in England will have to be fitted with microchips
by 2016, authorities said, meaning that canines across the country will
be chasing cars with a tiny circuit embedded in the back of their
necks.Britain's Environment Department
said that the chips would help reunite owners with lost or stolen pets,
promote animal welfare and take the pressure off animal shelters.
"It's a shame that in a nation of
dog lovers, thousands of dogs are roaming the streets or stuck in
kennels because the owner cannot be tracked down," Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said in a statement. "Microchipping is a simple solution that gives peace of mind to owners."Many British pet owners already have veterinarians insert chips under
the skin of dogs, cats, and rabbits in a bid to keep track of their
animals. The Environment Department says 60 percent of Britain's 8
million pet dogs already have microchips, which can be scanned and
matched to their owners' details.But officials say what was once
an optional extra will become mandatory in three years. Owners who
refuse to fit their dogs with chips face fines of up to 500 pounds

Assad's forces also came under attack in the east of the country, where a suicide car bomb struck a military intelligence compound in the city of Palmyra, causing dozens of casualties, they said.Authorities in Damascus closed the main Abbasid Square
and the Fares al-Khoury thoroughfare as fighters attacked roadblocks
and fortifications with rocket-propelled grenades and mortars."The areas of Jobar, Zamalka, al-Zablatani and parts of

SUICIDE CAR BOMB
A bomb destroyed part of the back wall of the military intelligence compound near the Roman-era ruins in the city and then a suicide car bomber drove through, detonating the vehicle and destroying parts of the facility, activists in Palmyra said.They said it was not immediately clear how many people had been killed in the blast and clashes which followed. Video footage, which could not be immediately verified, showed a large cloud of thick smoke rising in the city."The first car bomb struck at around six in the morning. The second one, which caused the larger explosion, broke through into the compound 10 minutes later," activist Abu al-Hassan said from the city.He said tanks stationed in the compound fired shells in response into an adjacent residential neighborhood, killing several civilians.Roadblocks across the city also came under attack.The state news agency said two "suicide terrorists" blew up cars packed with explosives near a garage in a residential district, killing and wounding several people. Among those killed was a woman, it said.

going. We oppose any behavior which may exacerbate the situation and any
acts which are not beneficial towards the denuclearization of the
Korean peninsula," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying.
"We call on all the relevant sides to remain calm and
exercise restraint and earnestly work hard to maintain peace and
stability in the Korean peninsula," she told a daily news briefing.China is the North's
sole remaining major diplomatic and economic benefactor but has been
showing sings of exasperation with its isolated neighbor.One of China's most widely read newspapers, the tabloid

Daily, said China should take a tough line and inform North Korean

Tsunami kills at least five in Solomons after big Pacific quake

(Reuters) - A powerful 8.0 magnitude earthquake set off a tsunami that killed at least five people in a remote part of the Solomon Islands on Wednesday and triggered evacuations across the South Pacific as island nations issued tsunami alerts.The quake struck 340 km (211 miles) east of Kira Kira in the Solomons, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center
in Hawaii said as it issued warnings for the Solomons and other South
Pacific nations including Australia and New Zealand. It later canceled
the warnings for the outlying regions.
A tsunami measuring 0.9 metres (three feet) hit near
the town of Lata on the remote Santa Cruz island, swamping some villages
and the town's main airport as people fled to safety on higher ground.More than three dozen aftershocks up to magnitude 6.6
rocked the region in the hours after the quake, the U.S. Geological
Survey said.Lata hospital's director of nursing, Augustine Pilve,
told New Zealand television that five people had been killed, including a
boy about 10 years old, adding that more casualties were possible as
officials made their way to at least three villages that may have been
hit."It's more likely that other villages along the coast of Santa Cruz may be affected," he said.Disaster officials in the Solomon Islands capital Honiara told the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corp. that they believed six people were dead and that five villages had suffered damage.Solomon Islands
Police Commissioner John Lansley said it was too early to fully assess
the damage or casualty numbers, and said authorities hoped to send
aircraft to the region on Thursday to help determine the extent of the
damage.Luke Taula, a fisheries officer in Lata, said he
watched the tsunami as it came in small tidal surges rather than as one
large wave."We have small waves come in, then go out again, then
come back in. The waves have reached the airport terminal," he told
Reuters by telephone.The worst damage was to villages on the western side of a point that protects the main township, he said."There are reports that some communities have been badly hit, their houses have been damaged by the waves."About 5,000 people lived in and around the town, but
the area was deserted as people fled to higher ground, Taula said.HOT SPOT
The Solomons, perched on the geologically active "Pacific Ring of Fire", were hit by a devastating tsunami following an 8.1 magnitude quake in 2007. At least 50 people were killed then and dozens left missing and more than 13 villages destroyed."It's an area that is very prone to earthquakes," said Jonathan Bathgate, seismologist at Geoscience Australia. "We've had seven 6-plus magnitude earthquakes in this region since January 31, so it has been very active in the past week."Initial signs were that the tremor was a thrust quake, in which vertical movement in the continental plates generates higher risk of tsunami, Bathgate added.
Authorities in the
Solomons, Fiji, Guam and elsewhere had urged residents to higher ground
before the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center canceled its alerts."The earthquake would have to be quite a bit bigger to
make a much more sizeable tsunami," said Brian Shiro, geophysicist for
