Quake in western China kills 400, buries more By GILLIAN WONG, Associated Press Writer - APR 14,2010

BEIJING – A series of strong earthquakes struck a far western Tibetan area of China on Wednesday, killing at least 400 people and injuring more than 10,000 as houses made of mud and wood collapsed, trapping many more, officials said.The largest quake was recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey as magnitude 6.9. In the aftermath, panicked people, many bleeding from their wounds, flooded the streets of a Qinghai province township where most of the homes had been flattened.Paramilitary police used shovels to dig through the rubble in the town, footage on state television showed. Officials said excavators were not available and with most of the roads leading to the nearest airport damaged, equipment and rescuers would have a hard time reaching the area.Downed phone lines, strong winds and frequent aftershocks also hindered rescue efforts, said Wu Yong, a local military chief.Workers were racing to release water from a reservoir in the disaster area where a crack had formed after the quake to prevent a flood, according to the China Earthquake Administration.The Wednesday morning quake was centered on Yushu county, in the southern part of Qinghai, near Tibet, with a population of about 100,000, mostly herders and farmers.The USGS recorded six temblors in less than three hours, all but one registered 5.0 or higher. The China Earthquake Networks Center measured the largest quake's magnitude at 7.1.

The main quake sent residents fleeing as it toppled houses made of mud and wood, said Karsum Nyima, the Yushu county television station's deputy head of news, speaking by phone with broadcaster CCTV.In a flash, the houses went down. It was a terrible earthquake, he said.In a small park, there is a Buddhist pagoda and the top of the pagoda fell off. ... Everybody is out on the streets, standing in front of their houses, trying to find their family members.The death toll rose to about 400 by afternoon, according to CCTV. Emergency official Pubucairen, who goes by only one name, was quoted as saying that the number of injured has risen to more than 10,000.

The earthquake comes a little less than two years after a magnitude-7.9 quake in neighboring Sichuan province left almost 90,000 people dead or missing.

That quake flattened several schools, killing thousands of students. Poor design, shoddy construction and the lax enforcement of building codes were found to be rampant.In Jiegu, a township 20 miles (30 kilometers) from the epicenter that appeared to be one of the worst hit, the local fire brigade was trying to rescue 20 students stuck inside a school, Kang Zifu, head of the rescue team, told state television. They were also working to pull out 40 to 50 people trapped in a toppled four-story building, according to CCTV. It did not say what type of school it was.

More than 85 percent of houses had collapsed in Jiegu, while large cracks have appeared on buildings still standing, the official Xinhua News Agency cited Zhuohuaxia, a local publicity official, as saying.The streets in Jiegu are thronged with panic and full of injured people, with many of them bleeding from their injuries,said Zhuohuaxia, who goes by one name.The provincial emergency office told Xinhua that 700 soldiers were trying to clear the rubble and rescue buried people and that 1,000 more troops would be dispatched.A local military official, Shi Huajie, told CCTV rescuers were working with limited equipment.The difficulty we face is that we don't have any excavators. Many of the people have been buried and our soldiers are trying to pull them out with human labor, Shi said. It is very difficult to save people with our bare hands.Five thousand tents and 100,000 thick, cotton coats and heavy blankets were being sent to help survivors cope with strong winds and temperatures of around 43 degrees Fahrenheit (6 degrees Celsius), the Qinghai provincial government said in a statement. The epicenter of the first quake was 235 miles (380 kilometers) south-southeast of Golmud, a large city in Qinghai, at a depth of six miles (10 kilometers), the USGS said. Powerful 6.8-magnitude quake strikes Solomon Islands

HONIARA (AFP) – A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands in the western Pacific on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no tsunami alert or reports of damage.The quake struck at a depth of about 60 kilometres (37 miles) with an epicentre 102 kilometres southwest of Kira Kira on Makira Island at 8:40 pm (0940 GMT) the USGS said.The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no destructive widespread tsunami threat but added in a bulletin: Earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 kilometres of the earthquake epicentre.Authorities in the region of the epicentre should be aware of this possibility and take action.

The quake had initially been measured at magnitude 7.1 but was later revised down.
Like much of the Pacific, the Solomons regularly experiences earthquakes.A string of tremors rocked the western Solomon Islands in January, with the largest of 7.2 causing a tsunami estimated at eight feet (nearly 2.5 metres).Around 1,000 people -- almost a third of the population -- are believed to have been left homeless on Rendova island due to earthquake and tsunami damage.In April 2007, an 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the western Solomons triggered a tsunami that killed more than 50 people and displaced thousands. Hundreds of people were injured.The cyclone demolished nearly 50,000 mud huts in West Bengal and more than 1,000 in Bihar, officials said.The worst-hit villages in West Bengal state were Hematabad, Raiganj and Kiran Dighi, where police and rescue teams have recovered 31 bodies, Mukherjee told The Associated Press.Another 37 people were killed in the northeastern Bihar districts of Araria, Kishenganj and Purnea, top Bihar state official Nitish Kumar told reporters.The cyclone moved at a speed of more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) an hour, said N. RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) – Landslides triggered by pounding rain in Rio de Janeiro last week killed at least 246 people, officials said, as access to the city's eight-decade-old Christ statue was cut off for the first time.Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes also estimated the cost of repairs to damage caused by the disaster to at least 113.6 million dollars.The death toll rose on Tuesday as more bodies were uncovered in the wreckage of shantytowns knocked off their precarious mountainside perches by the landslides.Searches were continuing for another 200-some people still missing in Rio's satellite town of Niteroi.The statue of Christ the Redeemer, the landmark monument that dominates Rio, was isolated by nearly 300 landslides on and around the Corcovado mountain on which it sits, forest official Bernardo Issa told the O Globo daily.The road and trainline that carry two million tourists each year to see the statue were covered in layers of mud and rocks.The damage to the park is severe. It's closed indefinitely. We're recommending people not try to walk or cycle there either, Issa said.Paes projected some 113.6 million dollars would be needed to pay for damage caused by the heavy rains, as he outlined plans to resettle the residents of shantytowns affected by the disaster, but warned costs could rise to 142 million dollars.

It was negligent and irresponsible officials, anthropologist Alba Zaluar told the weekly newsmagazine Epoca.A former municipal secretary for urban planning, Sergio Magalhaes, told AFP that in addition to curbs on the haphazard building of homes in the slums, public services such as electricity, transport, schools and trash collection should be extended to the zones to counter the prevailing anarchy.Others, though, noted that forcible evacuations of at-risk areas were not politically expedient in the past.Faced with the flood deaths and destruction, Paes has said that by 2012, some 12,000 families would be relocated.On Monday, 300 homes in a northern slum were razed by bulldozers.According to municipal officials, around 10,000 homes have been built in areas at risk from landslides. Iceland evacuates hundreds near volcano

REYKJAVIK, Iceland – Icelandic emergency officials evacuated hundreds of people near a restless volcano Wednesday amid strong signs of a second eruption.Some 800 people near the Eyjafjallajokull (AYA-feeyapla-yurkul) glacier were evacuated after seismic activity suggested a second eruption, said Rognvaldur Olafsson, a chief inspector for the Icelandic Civil Protection Agency. The volcano, 75 miles (120 kilometers) east of Reykjavik, erupted March 20 after almost 200 years of silence.The volcano in question is under a glacier, Olafsson said.If an eruption happens, there could be flash floods.Heavy cloud cover was preventing scientists from flying over the glacier, but a Coast Guard plane was due to fly over the area later Wednesday.The agency said two commercial aircraft had reported seeing steam plumes rising from the glacier.Gunnar Gudmunsson, a geophysicist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, said there had been a series of tremors overnight, and rivers in the area were rising — strong evidence of a new eruption under the ice cap.Most probably this eruption is taking place at the summit ... under the ice, he said.He said the new eruption appears to be about eight or nine kilometers (five to six miles) west of the original fissure.Last month's eruption struck near the glacier in an area that had no ice. An eruption below the ice could lead to widespread flooding.

The area is sparsely populated and Gudmunsson said no one was in danger.

Residents were evacuated to a Red Cross center in the nearby community of Hvolsvollur, although farmers were later allowed to return to tend to livestock, the protection agency said.Iceland, a nation of 320,000 people, sits on a large volcanic hot spot in the Atlantic's mid-oceanic ridge. Volcanic eruptions are often triggered by seismic activity when the Earth's plates move and when magma from deep underground pushes its way to the surface.

Media, US Politicians and Military leaders, it is time to stop playing around and to stand up for our law, constitution and the American people. Must we all move to Honduras to be represented and protected? It is most evident that there is a usurper in the White House and it certainly has nothing to do with his color and everything to do with what appears to be endless lies and cover up as to his birth place and past. Obama knows that he is covering up major ‘President stopping’ stuff in his life. Why else would he spend nearly 2 million dollars in legal fees to cover all his college records, passport and birth certificate records? Something is rotten and festering and the nation knows it. HOW COME MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, MAJOR MEDIA AND OUR LEADERS DON’T KNOW IT OR WORSE, DO KNOW IT AND STILL WON’T DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT? Remember not that long ago the world watched as then President Manual Zelaya attempted to break the law and constitution of the Honduran people, manipulating the election with massive fraud and cover up so he could stay in power. He was very good buddies with Chavez (as Obama is) who pulled the same thing and has a dictatorship of power in Venezuela. The Supreme Court and Government were 1000% right to arrest and kick him out of power immediately. He was planning to turn their thriving democracy into a dictatorship and they wouldn’t have it.My hat is off to the Honduran people! Immediately we saw Obama and Hillary stand boldly behind Zelaya and demand his return to power. Never mind, Zelaya was completely in error and violating his people and law. It was one of the many moments of shame I have felt with our President.

Naturally, the spin out, now that her recorded talk has gone viral on the Internet is that she was referring to his family, not Barrack. What about the sea of others and officials now? Forget Obama’s birth certificate. He ain’t going to show it until a Judge demands that. So far, it seems our Judges are largely gutless wonders. With the latest wave of Kenyan parliament statements verifying Obama was born in Kenya, along with the sea of others before that, is there no Judge that might require him to simply show his birth certificate? As the pundit who will deliver the goods when it comes to turning Americans against patriots and those who believe in conspiracy theories Mark Potack made a stop on the Keith Olbermann show to once again deliver the message that Americans who protest the government are dangerous to society. With the arrest of the federal agent provocateured Hutaree group in Michigan the mainstream press has been quick to seize on the incident and associate with it anyone who resists growing federal power .While acknowledging that the vast majority of people in militia groups don’t contemplate murdering police officers (even propaganda has to be a little truthful to have any credibility, so as not to push the limits of the public’s common sense) Olbermann and Potak were quick to discuss overlap between the Tea Party movement and groups like the Hutaree in another guilt by association attack.Using the same person over and over again to deliver the same message, as the TV networks have done with Potak, is not itself evidence that there’s a threat against the government by radicals, but rather that the press is trying to convince the public that there is. Overlooking incidents of leftist violence and focusing on the hypothetical violence of an obscure right leaning group, the aim of the media machine is to scatter opposition to the federal agenda to the winds as, (they hope), members of it distance themselves from each other out of fear of being considered extremists.

Keith Olbermann’s popularity rose during the Bush administration as he made a series of long-winded but truthful statements against many of the President’s actions, conveying his perfectly scripted outrage in what was thought at the time by many to be genuine criticism. Since the election of President Obama, Olbermann has turned much of that outrage against those American people who are opposed to growing government power, often infering that those who protest Obama’s policies are simply racists and not motivated by principle.Many of those who protest Obama’s policies do so because they don’t see any difference between his policies and Bush’s. Why is it that leftist regimes always demand the same type of illogical and damned-to-fail policies? Most people see socialist programs as goal oriented in terms of outcomes, and of course this is how they are sold to the public. But, at a deeper level and given their ill-fated nature, there must be a unifying theme connecting all the different leftist plans. In fact, what is proposed here is a schemata tying together all the socialist, Marxist and leftist notions.The fact is policy outcomes are not nearly as important as the sacrificial religious element found within. In brief, neo-liberalism is a humanistic religion, with its chief ideas stolen from Christianity, which encourages its adherents to see themselves as a small band of self-proclaimed geniuses. It instructs its immodest adherents to look down on non-leftists, and do anything possible to force the blinded masses into a liberal paradise on earth. This is essentially Barack Obama’s world view.

NATURE & SOURCES OF LEFTISM
According to Eric Voegelin in various works, the fundamental design of leftism was hammered-out upon the anvil of religion by the post-French Revolution socialists, using the bible’s messianic redemptive outline of history. This intellectual germ was further influenced by the tripartite nature of history proposed by rogue medieval priest Joachim of Floris. Then was added the humanistic eschatology of the Middle Eastern pagan Gnostics whose Eastern understanding of religion filtered into the writings of early collectivists.

There is no doubt what is now called socialism or Marxism takes its elan, its joi de vivre, its essential life force, not from humanism, but from stock biblical themes. Some will understandably ask – How is this possible when all mature leftist regimes seek the conversion or demise of Jewish and Christian sects? The answer is the antagonism is caused not by disbelief, but results from envy. Such familial jealousy disputes the right to hold ground usually assumed by the church. In other words, Marxism and socialism seek to supplant true religious movements with a zombified doppelganger, or a malignant, evil-minded twin.

As such, modern neo-liberalism has been erected as a massive religious forgery, a titanic heretic cult. Modern liberalism itself began as a fraud movement when socialists changed their name to liberals when they realized they could never outstrip classical liberalism for its legendary reputation in helping build the West. So early 20th century progressives simply decided to steal the name and re-brand their undertaking.

PARTICULAR DOCTRINES
In analyzing modern liberalism, we must begin with the preliminary premise that leftists see the secular state as not only godlike, but literally assuming all authority previously held by any religion. To point out the obvious, the assumed power and authority of the modern liberal state create a dangerous, pseudo-religious heresy. As a blind, humanistic replacement for traditional Christianity, modern liberalism has revealed itself as a murderous fraud that brooks no opposition, allows no human rights, and accepts no deviation from its manipulative and simplistic creed.

Specifically, neo-liberalism stands for certain propositions about the nature of reality. The claims: First, there is no God. Second, humans evolved and are therefore on our own and so we must create our own standards. Third, there is no soul, or attendant human nature. Fourth, since there is no God, no afterlife exists, and therefore all reward and punishment occur on earth. Fifth, it is the job of the small number of elites to create paradise and then drive the dull-minded masses into this earthly heaven. Any means of doing this are perfectly acceptable. Sixth, all warfare and weaponry is wrong. The only excuse for such is to defend socialist states, or to force other countries to accept reality – that the only moral government is collectivist. Sixth, all we can measure life by is the holding of material wealth, since no other humanistic standard exists. Seventh, the real work of mankind is building a human paradise that will protect all people, even via theft, fraud, propaganda, or at the end of a gun. The stakes are too high to accept any compromise on this last point.

Science
The essential spirit of modern scholarship could be described as what happens when radical skepticism meets scientific dogmatism. The philosophy of modern liberalism is neo-positivism, being a supposed empirical approach to intellectual ideas. Science itself is therefore the only supposed arbiter of values, creating an alarmingly vapid circular model. That neo-liberalism has completely commandeered and derailed many scientific endeavors is a foregone conclusion after the exposure of the astounding socialist hoax called Global Warming. But such dishonesty will continue to be sold in the name of various studies, such as Evolution, environmentalism, and the like. It is no coincidence that Marx claimed all his ideas were the quintessence of science, which he appears to have done merely to push his theories past any criticism. But science’s formerly pristine method has been handed over to the godlike State so that order and values can be instilled in the blind masses.

The Hive
Meaning and secular salvation come to people from having a group identity. Liberals believe the only hope for mankind’s future lies in joining forces in the socialist group, much like how ant hills or bee hives survive. All authority is vested in the government. Antiquated cliques such as churches must be discouraged so that all humans can be on the same page, making decisions that benefit everyone, not just the few rich or powerful. So the notion of free will and rugged individualism, for so long a linchpin of American exceptionalism, must be sacrificed to the deified State so that all may be equally exceptional.

Bill of Rights
It goes without saying that the Bill of Rights must be handed over to the deified State so that all may be saved en mass, and live in peace. There can be no individual rights if salvation is only offered to the group, as pointed out by Igal Halfin in From Darkness To Light: Class, Consciousness, and Salvation in Revolutionary Russia. The Anglo-American legal heritage itself has been debased from its common law roots, and is likewise now simply a tautological undertaking known as positive law. This can only end in catastrophe. For example, that marriage is being remade without any regard for the natural law is itself a staggering failure to keep intellectual rigor. But law itself must be sacrificed to debase the population of any claim of fictive natural rights so people can be properly processed as mere automatons in the State’s self-articulative process into godhood.

Taxes
In a perfect world, there would be no such thing as taxes, since the State as god would rightly own all wealth, wisely distributing it. But since America is not communist, a short-term compromise is found in collecting ever increasing levels of taxes until the capitalist society collapses and becomes Marxist. Because only a socialist society can truly make good decisions based upon the welfare of the whole, and not simply selfish, capitalist greedy ones. People ought not worry about building a vain empire for themselves on earth, but instead about the welfare of their fellow man. So, in offering up taxes, the people proffer a worthy material sacrifice to the god of materialistic government.

Family
Liberals claim a delusion the notion that any parent has a natural right to direct their family outside of the State’s protocols. The family is now simply a subset of government, who properly holds all authority over it, such as in decisions for how to educate children. Leftists claim the family-cult is a root of much ignorance, selfishness, and dangerous fundamentalism. Christian fixations can only hamper the prophesied evolution of society as it moves from self-centered individualism into a group-oriented pod. Government-directed schooling, based upon John Dewey’s savage humanism, has achieved terrific socialist progress. Easy, no-fault divorces, unfettered abortion rights, and youth encouraged to amorally experiment with various partners without any regard to marriage, and with complete disregard to gender, all help plant future seeds of confusion and instability. The deified State erases timeless norms via lax laws and mindless propaganda campaigns, supplanting fatherhood by disdain and welfare support, in its bid to claim status as the only dependable human reality.

Abortion
Whether to choose an abortion is a decision putatively belonging to the mother, which secular society itself ceaselessly promotes, upon the back of innumerable canards. The government has a vested interest in keeping down fertility rates so the planet does not get despoiled by Global Warming and overconsumption. A fetus has no rights, but even the rights of its parents are fictive. The State always has the option of preempting individual choices to make sure the group survives. In ancient societies, it was acceptable to leave children outside and allow them to die of exposure. Further, ancient religions, like the omnipresent Baal cult also had rites where children were incinerated or put to the sword as a sacrifice to the gods.

Disarmament
Liberals have a nuanced approach to the military. For America, they demand a decrease in armed forces spending, as well as disarmament because the US has too much power and so forces political and economic decisions upon weaker regimes. But for communist countries its argued they should be allowed to build up their arsenals, as illustrated in the atomic treason of the Rosenbergs. So why the seeming contradictory standards? In part, it is due to the influence of the historic peace churches, such as the Quakers, who helped develop the modern idea of pacifism later borrowed by neo-liberalism. From this angle, all violence is evil, even defensive. But when discussing the colossal militarism of the USSR, for example, unspoken concessions are made for the notion that to reach a one-world government, or socialist regime, some eggs will have to be broken. From this view, an army is allowed if it is used to coerce others into a socialistic, pacifist world, where the deified State can therefore more properly be acknowledged and accepted.

Capitalism
Capitalism is a profound evil because its manner of building wealth is based upon theft. The stages of economic history go from feudalism to capitalism, then from socialism to finally communism. Only in a communist country can true justice be achieved. The sacrifice of capitalism by the middle class and wealthy pleases the deified state since no longer will problems caused by greed, envy, or poverty.

Education
The purpose of modern education is not to teach children how to think, because then they might go off on tangents and develop anti-social theories, like demanding freedom. Instead, the purpose of learning is to inculcate youth into the truth, and so prepare them to fit into a vertical command matriarchal society. Socialism must be the bottom line value, because therein lies the only hope of escaping capitalistic folly, menacing militarism, or the murderous evils of individualism. In the USSR the New Man was to be constructed through the university system, according to Halfin. But the god of the secular State must be worshiped via education, or all else will be lost.

Religion
To a socialist, religion is merely the illusion of a God who cares, or will intervene in human affairs. But instead of being a harmless delusion, religions are extremely detrimental because they distract and mislead the masses. Contra, people need to direct their gaze towards the government and put their faith in the political leadership. The trashing of traditional religion is the best sacrifice to the deified State imaginable.

Government
The government itself is the only real God, according to genuine Marxists. This is why, even if liberals are involved in a church, their doctrines are debased into socialist programs that emphasize redistribution of wealth, and racial remunerations. Many Christians now declare the final age at hand, the so-called eschaton, ie last days.Liberals instead declare this as a secular apocalypse, where all that will remain is government and its authority. Any individual human rights will be extinguished. There will be no more wars, as all wealth will be owned by the deified State, and distributed for the good of all. Finally, happiness will reign for all people as mankind achieves its ultimate potential.

CONCLUSION
We must finally confront the vicious humanist creed of neo-liberalism. Modern leftism, aka socialism, ie Marxism, proposes a state that is indistinguishable from God. It is therefore owed every kind of sacrifice and allegiance typically demanded by the most deranged and aggressive cults. Marx borrowed the idea from Hegel that the government is the only approximate deity. Hegel had joined philosophy with the Christian religion and placed both in a German context for his deified State, according to Karl Lowith in From Hegel to Nietzsche.Hegel was merely moving along Spinoza’s theory that God was not a personality, but was the universe itself. This soulless entity gained voice via the political process of the government. In doing this, Spinoza was no mere modernizer, but a subtle advancer of the classical world’s idea of the deified State. In other words, Spinoza brought ancient Greek and Rome paganism into the modern world via his radical humanism.

It is now time to confront the fact that leftist speculative philosophy has overrun its bounds and is again menacing the entire West. One would think that communism’s murder of at least 150 million innocent souls in the last century would awaken the most indifferent American to the dangers we face in Obama’s infatuation with Marxism. Instead, we are reaping the rewards of several generations of desultory education of our youth. Now it is up to the remaining few patriots to once again rouse the countryside, like Paul Revere, to warn our people that our freedoms, and in fact our very lives are menaced by self-righteous and angry brainwashed collectivists. Let’s also hope the warning comes not too late to save ourselves.

The radiocarbon dating that concluded the Shroud of Turin was a medieval forgery has been called into question by a new study published by the Italian Society of Statistics claiming the results contain huge inconsistencies. The article – authored by three Italian university-based statisticians and a professor of statistics from the London School of Economics – was published in Italian April 7 in the magazine of the Italian Statistical Society. The authors challenged the results of the 1988 radiocarbon testing performed at the University of Oxford, the University of Arizona and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and published in 1989 in Nature magazine. They charged that upon subsequent, more thorough testing the results failed to reach the level of statistical significance needed to establish with 95 percent confidence – as was originally claimed from the 1988 tests – that the Shroud of Turin was a medieval creation.

Moreover, the authors charged that the 1988 radiocarbon tests failed to take into consideration pollution on the shroud, both from plant life from the many locations it had travelled and from centuries of contact with human hands. They point out that even Nobel Prize chemist Willard Frank Libby, the creator of the carbon-14 dating method, had warned such factors could contaminate the results. The statisticians further detected a systematic contamination in the samples of the shroud selected for radiocarbon dating tests that could have produced in the results of all three laboratories a non-negligible error that accounted for a wide variety of dates being produced from the samples tested at the three laboratories, ranging from A.D. 1260 to 1390.

Medieval reweaving

The conclusions coincide with other independent scientific research that suggests the samples taken in 1988 from the edge of the shroud may have been contaminated by expert medieval reweaving. A scientific paper was published in 2005 by the late Ray Rogers, a chemist with the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory and a member of the 1978 Shroud of Turin Research Project, said that after a fire in 1532 nearly destroyed the shroud, French Poor Clare nuns repaired it by adding 16 burn patches. The nuns stitched a reinforcing cloth to the back of the shroud that is known as the Holland cloth. The nuns were able to repair the edges of the shroud by expertly reweaving with cotton much of the damage the fire did to the original linen cloth. Rogers was able to detect under a microscope the reweaving, because the cotton had been dyed to match the linen. The fibers could be distinguished in the reweaving at the edges of the shroud, because linen is resistant to dye, while cotton is not. Rogers' paper made an impact on the Shroud of Turin research community worldwide, because immediately after the results of the 1988 radiocarbon dating were made public, he was a leading voice asserting the shroud was a medieval forgery. Just before he died, Rogers expressed his views in a video interview recorded with Barrie Schwortz, the official photographer of the 1978 Shroud of Turin Research Project. Rogers concluded the combination of 16th century cotton and first century linen skewed the 1988 radiocarbon dating tests.

He also examined the rate of loss of vanillin in the linen fibers of the shroud.

Vanillin disappears in the thermal decomposition of lignin, a complex polymer in the cells of the flax plants used to make linen. Rogers concluded in his 2005 paper that the linen in the main body of the shroud had lost vanillin, much like the Dead Sea scroll linens, suggesting the shroud itself is much older than the radiocarbon dating had suggested, very possibly reaching back 2,000 years to the time of Jesus Christ.

President Obama yesterday committed to reducing stocks of U.S. weapons-grade plutonium and last week signed an agreement that will lower the country's deployed nuclear arsenals. Obama's science czar, John Holdren, has long petitioned for these moves at a magazine whose personnel were used for the benefit of Soviet propaganda in an attempt to disarm America, according to a former top intelligence official from the USSR. The magazine's founders were accused of providing vital nuclear secrets that helped the Soviets develop an atomic bomb. The magazine, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, has been urging the U.S. to surrender its nuclear arsenal to international control. The U.S. and Russia yesterday signed a deal reducing stocks of weapons-grade plutonium, officials in both nations said. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will sign a protocol to a 2000 agreement on eliminating excess weapons-grade plutonium from defense programs, the State Department said. U.S. officials have said each country is to dispose of 34 metric tons of weapons-grade plutonium by burning it in reactors.Last week, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Obama signed the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or START, committing them to reducing their deployed nuclear arsenals.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, with Holdren on the board of directors from 1984 until recently, has long petitioned for the U.S. to reduce its nuclear stockpiles. According to Pavel Sudoplatov, a former major-general in Soviet intelligence, this kind of work by the magazine editors was for the benefit of the Soviet Union. Holdren is assistant to the president for science and technology, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and co-chairman of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists began publishing regularly in 1945, when it was founded by former physicists from the Manhattan Project, which developed the first atomic bomb. Two of the magazine's founding sponsors, Leo Szilard and Robert Oppenheimer, were accused of passing information from the Manhattan Project to the Soviets. Both were also key initiators of the Manhattan Project. In 1994, Sudoplatov, a former major-general in Soviet intelligence, identified Szilard and Oppenheimer as key sources of crucial atomic information to the Soviet Union. The most vital information for developing the first Soviet atomic bomb came from scientists engaged in the Manhattan Project to build the American atomic bomb – Robert Oppenheimer, Enrico Fermi and Leo Szilard,wrote Sudoplatov. Sudoplatov wrote the Soviet Union received reports on the progress of the Manhattan Project from Oppenheimer and his friends in oral form, through comments and asides, and from documents transferred through clandestine methods with their full knowledge that the information they were sharing would be passed on.Oppenheimer was accused in Senate hearings of bringing communists into the Manhattan Project. He brought his brother Frank and three former graduate students into the project, all of whom, according to Senate hearings, were well known to him to be members of the Communist Party or closely associated with activities of the Communist Party.Oppenheimer admitted he knew by August 1943 that two of the scientists working under him were Communist Party members. Three of five scientists under Oppenheimer's direct supervision were accused of leaking secret information about the atomic bomb to the Soviets. On Oct. 25, 1945, Oppenheimer met with President Truman at the White House, urging him to surrender the U.S. nuclear monopoly to international control. Truman was outraged, reportedly telling Secretary of State Dean Acheson,I don't want to see that son-of-a-b*tch in this office ever again.

Magazine used for Soviet propaganda

Oppenheimer and Szilard were stripped of their work in the Manhattan Project, but they continued to use the bulletin to petition for the U.S. to surrender its nuclear arsenal to international control. [Soviet politician and security chief Lavrentiy] Beria said we should think how to use Oppenheimer, Szilard and others around them in the peace campaign against nuclear armament. Disarmament and the inability to impose nuclear blackmail would deprive the United States of its advantage, wrote Sudoplatov. Sudoplatov said his spymasters knew the lobby efforts of the bulletin editors would be a crucial factor in establishing the new world order after the war, and we took advantage of this.Another bulletin founding sponsor, Edward U. Condon, was mentioned by FBI director J. Edgar Hoover in a May 1947 letter as having contact with an alleged spy who had passed information to the Soviets from 1941 to 1944.

Holdren worked alongside communist sympathizers

When Holdren started work on the bulletin in 1984, communist and socialist sympathizers still occupied the magazine's masthead. The New Zeal blog notes the bulletin's board of directors in 1984 included:Board chairman Aaron Adler, who also served on the board of the Chicago Center for U.S./USSR Relations and Exchanges, alongside Larry McGurty of the Communist Party USA. Adler was also a member of what New Zeal labels a Communist Party front, the Chicago Committee to Defend the Bill of Rights. He was also involved in a committee to celebrate the 100th birthday of Communist Party member Paul Robeson. Bernard Weissbourd, a former Manhattan Project scientist who later served on the transition oversight committee for incoming Chicago Mayor Harold Washington, who was active in Communist Party fronts.
Weissbourds' son, Robert M. Weissbourd, later served as chairman of the Obama for America Campaign Urban and Metropolitan Policy Committee and on the Obama Transition Housing and Urban Development Agency Review Team in 2008. Ruth Adams, bulletin editor, who served in the 1960s on the Advisory Committee of the Hyde Park Community Peace Center. Other center members included lifelong communist front activist Robert Havighurst, communist activist and radical Trotskyist Sydney Lens and Quentin Young, an avowed communist who has advised Obama on health care.
Holdren in Cold War WND first reported Holdren visited the Soviet Union during the Cold War as vice chairman of a group whose founder was accused of providing vital nuclear information that helped the Soviets build an atom bomb. The original leaders of the group, the Federation of American Scientists, also served on the board of the bulletin magazine. Just after President Reagan's March 1983 Star Wars speech in which he proposed a missile-defense shield to protect the U.S., a group of Soviet academicians sent a letter to the U.S. scientific community asking about the feasibility of such a shield. The only group that responded directly to the Soviet scientists was the Federation of American Scientists, or FAS, leading to an invitation to visit from Evgeny Velikov, director of the Soviet Kurchatov Institute of Science. Physicist David W. Hafemeister relates in his book,Physics and Nuclear Arms Today,how he was part of the FAS delegation to the USSR along with Holdren, who at the time was a professor at the University of California at Berkeley. The FAS is non-profit organization formed in 1945 by scientists from the Manhattan Project. The FAS has long petitioned for nuclear disarmament. Szilard was a principal founder of the FAS. Founders of the FAS also were board members of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. Holdren, meanwhile, has been a longtime climate-change alarmist who has advocated ideas such as enforcing limits to world population growth. Holdren's name was in the e-mails hacked from the Climatic Research Unit at East Anglia University in the U.K., which show that some climate researchers declined to share their data with fellow scientists, conspired to rig data and sought to keep researchers with dissenting views from publishing in leading scientific journals. FrontPageMag.com noted Holdren has endorsed surrender of sovereignty to a comprehensive Planetary Regime that would control all the world's resources, direct global redistribution of wealth, oversee the de-development of the West, control a world army and taxation regime, and enforce world population limits. Holdren collaborated with conspiracy theorist Paul Ehrlich, author of The Population Bomb, in which it was proclaimed: The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970s, the world will undergo famines – hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death.WND previously reported Holdren also predicted 1 billion people will die in carbon-dioxide-induced famines in a coming new ice age by 2020. Holdren based his prediction on a theory that human emissions of carbon dioxide would produce a climate catastrophe causing global cooling, with a consequent reduction in agricultural production resulting in widespread disaster. But Holdren also argued global warming might cancel global cooling. In their 1970s textbook Ecoscience: Population, Resources and Environment, last revised in 1977, Holdren and co-authors Paul and Anne Ehrlich argued on page 687that a man-made warming trend might cancel out a natural cooling trend.

WASHINGTON – Mike Huckabee, a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2012, says the effort to allow gays and lesbians to marry is comparable to legalizing incest, polygamy and drug use.Huckabee also told college journalists last week that gay couples should not be permitted to adopt. Children are not puppies, he said.

Huckabee visited The College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J., last Wednesday to speak to the Student Government Association. He also was interviewed by a campus news magazine, The Perspective, which published an article on Friday.Huckabee told the interviewer that not every group's interests deserve to be accommodated, if their lifestyle is outside of what he called the ideal.That would be like saying, well there's there are a lot of people who like to use drugs so let's go ahead and accommodate those who want to use drugs. There are some people who believe in incest, so we should accommodate them. There are people who believe in polygamy, should we accommodate them? he said, according to a transcript of the interview.

The 2008 presidential hopeful and former Arkansas governor also said that deciding which lifestyles should be accommodated and which ones should not creates a slippery slope.Why do you get to choose that two men are OK but one man and three women aren't OK? he asked.Huckabee added that his goal isn't to tell others how to live, but that the burden of proving that a gay marriage can be successful rests with the activists in favor of changing the law.I don't have to prove that marriage is a man and a woman in a relationship for life, he said. LINCOLN, Neb. – Two first-of-their-kind laws in Nebraska put new restrictions on abortion, including one that uses a new legal rationale for a ban on later-term abortions.That law bars the procedure at and after 20 weeks of pregnancy based on the assertion that fetuses can feel pain at that point. The other requires women be screened before having abortions for mental health issues and other risk factors indicating if they might have problems afterward.A national abortion rights group already appeared to be girding for a legal challenge, calling the ban at or after 20 weeks flatly unconstitutional.It absolutely cannot survive a challenge without a change to three decades of court rulings, said Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights.Courts have been chipping away at abortion rights ... this would be like taking a huge hacksaw to the rights.The law is designed to shut down one of the few doctors in the nation who performs them in Nebraska. Set to take effect in October, it is a change from the current standard in abortion restrictions based on viability, or when a fetus is able to survive outside the womb. That is generally at 22 to 24 weeks.The law could lead to changes in other states if upheld by the courts, said Mary Spaulding Balch, legislative director for National Right to Life.It would broaden the interests of states in protecting the unborn child, she said.It says the state has an interest in the unborn child before viability.

Both sides of the abortion debate say the laws are firsts of their kind in the U.S.

The fetal-pain bill is partially aimed at Dr. LeRoy Carhart, who attracted attention after his friend and fellow late-term abortion provider Dr. George Tiller was shot to death by an abortion foe in Kansas last year.Kansas lawmakers, worried that Carhart might move there, has passed a bill awaiting action from Gov. Mark Parkinson, an abortion-rights Democrat. It would require doctors to list an exact medical diagnosis justifying a late-term abortion and adjust the definition of viability so a fetus would be considered viable if there's a reasonable probability it would survive outside the womb with life-sustaining measures such as an incubator.

Also, it would codify a state rule that the required second opinion on whether late-term abortions are necessary come from doctors in Kansas.Attempts to restrict abortion across the country aren't unusual. In Oklahoma, for example, new laws on abortions have been approved this year, including a ban on abortions based on the gender of the child and tighter restrictions on the use of the RU-486 abortion pill. South Dakota voters in 2006 and 2008 turned down proposals to ban abortion outright.

The switch from viability to fetal pain in justifying abortion limits raises fresh legal issues.Abortion opponents say a 2007 U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding a federal ban on certain late-term abortions opens the door for such legislation because it suggests states have an interest in protecting fetuses.The argument used to justify the 20-week ban is based on the testimony of some doctors, some of it given during a 2005 congressional hearing. They contend there is substantial evidence that by 20 weeks, fetuses seek to evade stimuli in a way that indicates they are experiencing pain.The Nebraska Legislature has taken a bold step which should ratchet up the abortion debate across the nation, Nebraska Right to Life director Julie Schmit-Albin said. What we didn't know in 1973 in Roe versus Wade ... we know now.The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, however, says it knows of no legitimate evidence that fetuses experience pain at that stage.There is certainly no solid scientific evidence establishing that a fetus can perceive pain at these earlier stages, so any court decisions to uphold such broader laws could only do so by disregarding the importance of good scientific evidence, said Caitlin Borgmann, a law professor at The City University of New York. The U.S. Supreme Court would have to overturn earlier abortion-related rulings to uphold the Nebraska law, Borgmann said, including a 1992 ruling in Planned Parenthood v. Casey that upheld the right of women to have abortions before fetuses were viable.

JERUSALEM – Hundreds of Israeli travelers returned home after Israel warned its citizens to urgently leave Egypt's Sinai Peninsula because of a kidnapping alert, police said Wednesday.In the unusually strong wording late Tuesday, Israel's anti-terror office called on all Israelis in Sinai to leave immediately and return home, and cited concrete evidence of an expected terrorist attempt to kidnap Israelis in Sinai.The director of the office suggested that militants in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip were involved in the alleged kidnap plot.The peninsula, within driving distance of Israel, was once an extremely popular vacation destination for Israelis because of its inexpensive seaside resorts, nestled at the foot of desert mountains.

A string of deadly suicide bombings in 2004 at several vacation spots popular with Israelis — including the Taba Hilton Hotel just across the Israeli border — has led many Israelis to shun the Sinai, though the area still remains relatively popular.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said about 650 Israelis were in Sinai when the warning was issued Tuesday — about half the number the counterterrorism office initially presented. By midmorning Wednesday, some 430 had left, Rosenfeld said.The commander of the anti-terror office, Brig. Gen. WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama, wrapping up a 47-nation nuclear security summit, said Tuesday he is confident China will join other nations in pressing for tough new sanctions on Iran for continuing to defy the international community in seeking nuclear weapons.Words have to mean something. There have to be some consequences, Obama told reporters at a news conference at the conclusion of the two-day gathering.He was asked about China's reluctance in the past to join other major nations in backing tough sanctions.Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday gave a speech to the group calling for effective measures to safeguard nuclear weapons and materials but stopped short of mentioning Iran's program.Hu and Obama met for 90 minutes on Monday after which U.S. officials said the two agreed to tell their aides to work on a tough new sanctions program. However, a Chinese spokesman did not mention sanctions in his description of the meeting.China imports oil from Iran and in the past had been reluctant to endanger that supply line.The Chinese are obviously concerned about what harm this might have on the economy generally, Obama said.Iran is an oil-producing state. ... A lot of countries around the world have trade relationships with Iran and we're mindful of that.

But Obama said Hu had assured him that China would participate in drafting sessions at the United Nations on a new tough sanctions regime.I think that we have a strong number of countries on the Security Council who believe this is the right thing to do, Obama said. But I think these negotiations can be difficult, he added.China is one of five permanent members of the Security Council with veto powers, along with the U.S., Russia, Britain and France.Obama said that the new sanctions would make it easier to isolate Iran, as the global community had done for North Korea as it continued to develop nuclear weapons.Obama said Pyongyang had chosen a path of severe isolation, which has hurt the North Korean people. Obama said he hoped sanctions would add pressure on North Korea's leaders to return to the six-party talks.But Obama said he believes the U.S. approach would make it more likely for North Korea to alter its behavior rather than allowing the communist nation to operate its nuclear program without consequences — and could have a similar impact in Iran.

Sanctions,Obama acknowledged, aren't a magic wand.What sanctions do accomplish is hopefully to change the calculus of a country like Iran so that they see that there are more costs and fewer benefits to pursuing a nuclear weapons program, he said.On an area of major disagreement with China, Obama acknowledged that he did not win a concession from Hu that China would move to let its currency rise with market forces.
China sees the matter as a sovereign issue, Obama said. However, he emphasized,It is actually in China's interest to achieve this rebalancing.China currently pegs its currency, the yuan, to the U.S. dollar. American manufacturers claim this severely holds down the price of Chinese products in other markets, making their own goods less competitive. Obama was asked whether some of the momentum built at the summit on combatting the spread of nuclear weapons could be transferred to other causes, such as achieving peace in the Middle East. The need for peace between Israelis and Palestinians and the Arab states remains as critical as ever, he said. But, in a sober assessment, he added: It is a very hard thing to do.Even if we are applying all of our political capital to that issue, the Israeli people, through their government, and the Palestinian people, through the Palestinian Authority, as well as other Arab states, may say to themselves, We are not prepared to resolve these issues no matter how much pressure the United States brings to bear.Throughout his news conference, Obama struck a measured tone about the role of the United States in international affairs. He made it clear it was absolutely the role of the U.S. to lead on matters such as nuclear security if other countries are to do their part.

But on getting countries in the Mideast to agree to peace, on getting the Chinese to move to a market-based currency, on getting Iran and North Korea to play by international rules on nuclear compliance, on getting countries to live up to their fresh pledges on nuclear security, Obama repeatedly said the U.S. can't enforce the world. Countries must respond on their own. In all of our efforts internationally, in every treaty that we sign, we're relying on goodwill on the part of those who are signatories to those efforts. That's the nature of international relations, he said.
