Marc Faber Says America Will Launch More Wars to Distract from Bad Economy
Washington’s Blog August 12, 2009 The claim that America would launch more wars to the help the economy is outrageous, right? Certainly.


But leading economist Marc Faber has repeatedly said that the American government will start new wars in response to the economic crisis:The next thing the government will do to distract the attention of the people on bad economic conditions is they’ll start a war somewhere.If the global economy doesn’t recover, usually people go to war.
Is Faber crazy? Maybe. But top trend forecaster Gerald Celente agrees.As Antiwar’s Justin Raimondo writes: As Gerald Celente, one of the few economic forecasters who predicted the 08 crash, put it the other day, Governments seem to be emboldened by their failures.What the late Gen. William E. Odom trenchantly described as the worst strategic disaster in American military history – the invasion of Iraq – is being followed up by a far larger military operation, one that will burden us for many years to come. This certainly seems like evidence in support of the Celente thesis, and the man who predicted the 1987 stock market crash, the fall of the Soviet Union, the dot-com bust, the gold bull market, the 2001 recession, the real estate bubble, the Panic of 08, and now is talking about the inevitable popping of the bailout bubble,has more bad news:Given the pattern of governments to parlay egregious failures into mega-failures, the classic trend they follow, when all else fails, is to take their nation to war.As the economic crisis escalates and the debt-based central banking system shows it can no longer re-inflate the bubble by creating assets out of thin air, an economic and political rationale for war is easy to come by; for if the Keynesian doctrine that government spending is the only way to lift us out of an economic depression is true, then surely military expenditures are the quickest way to inject life into a failing system. This doesn’t work, economically, since the crisis is only maksed by the wartime atmosphere of emergency and temporary privation. Politically, however, it is a lifesaver for our ruling elite, which is at pains to deflect blame away from itself and on to some foreign target.

It’s the oldest trick in the book, and it’s being played out right before our eyes, as the U.S. prepares to send even more troops to the Afghan front and is threatening Iran with draconian economic sanctions, a step or two away from outright war. A looming economic depression and the horrific prospect of another major war – the worst-case scenario seems to be unfolding, like a recurring nightmare.Forecaster Celente has identified several bubbles, the latest being the bailout bubble, slated to pop at any time, yet there may be another bubble to follow what Celente calls the mother of all bubbles,one that will implode with a resounding crash heard ’round the world – the bubble of empire. Our current foreign policy of global hegemonism and unbridled aggression is simply not sustainable, not when we are on the verge of becoming what we used to call a Third World country, one that is bankrupt and faces the prospect of a radical lowering of living standards. Unless, of course, the crisis atmosphere can be sustained almost indefinitely.George W. Bush had 9/11 to fall back on, but that song is getting older every time they play it. Our new president needs to come up with an equivalent, one that will divert our attention away from Goldman Sachs and toward some overseas enemy who is somehow to be held responsible for our present predicament. It is said that FDR’s New Deal didn’t get us out of the Great Depression, but World War II did. The truth is that, in wartime, when people are expected to sacrifice for the duration of the emergency,economic problems are anesthetized out of existence by liberal doses of nationalist chest-beating and moral righteousness. Shortages and plunging living standards were masked by a wartime rationing system and greatly lowered expectations. And just as World War II inured us to the economic ravages wrought by our thieving elites, so World War III will provide plenty of cover for a virtual takeover of all industry by the government and the demonization of all political opposition as terrorist.An impossible science-fictional scenario? Or a reasonable projection of present trends? Celente, whose record of predictions is impressive, to say the least, sees war with Iran as the equivalent of World War III, with economic, social, and political consequences that will send what is left of our empire into a tailspin. This is the popping of the hyperpower bubble, the conceit that we – the last superpower left standing – will somehow defy history and common sense and avoid the fate of all empires: decline and fall.I certainly hope Faber and Calente are wrong. But they are both very smart guys who have been right on many of their forecasts for decades. Even when their predictions have been viewed as extremely controversial at the time, many of them have turned out to be right.

Citizens are flocking to town hall forums across the nation and letting their representatives know where they stand. Meetings are filled to capacity while thousands wait outside for their chance to be heard.

New Hampshire

At a Portsmouth, N.H., high school today, President Obama hosted a health care town hall.An estimated 2,000 proponents and opponents of his plan gathered in the streets with signs and bullhorns, ready to greet the president's motorcade. While groups opposed to the health reform arrived in small groups with hand-made signs, supporters from pro-Obama organizations, such as Organizing for America and Health Care for America Now, spilled out of buses.Let's get this done, Obama shouted to a crowd of 1,800 inside Portsmouth High School.Critics remained calm and polite when the president solicited responses from skeptical attendees, according to the Associated Press.

Pennsylvania

Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Penn., held a town hall meeting this morning in Lebanon, Pa., where constituents booed and jeered him for at least an hour. One man began shouting because he was not given an opportunity to speak. He complained that Specter, a long-time Republican who switched over to the Democratic Party this year, would not listen because he's not a lobbyist with all kind of money to stuff in your pocket.One day, God's going to stand before you,he told the senator to his face.And he's going to judge you and the rest of your damn cronies up on the Hill – and then you will get your just desserts.Other attendees complained about Democrats plans for health reform.CBS News reported that one woman wore a member of the mob T-shirt – referencing Democrat claims that insurance companies and the Republican Party had enlisted angry mobs to disrupt town hall meetings. I don't believe this is just health care. This is about the systematic dismantling of this country,a woman told Specter.You have awakened a sleeping giant. I don't want this country turning into Russia, turning into a socialized country. What are you going to do to restore this country back to what our founders created, according to the Constitution? Her question prompted a standing ovation. Several members of the crowd shouted, You work for us! Meanwhile, a large crowd gathered outside with signs warning of socialism.

Missouri

At an Aug. 6 forum sponsored by Rep. Russ Carnahan, D-Mo., many protesters were turned away at the door while SEIU members were allowed in. A video of the St. Louis, Mo., incident can be seen below:The event resulted in six arrests. Afterward, town hall attendee Kenneth Gladney, 38, was beaten, kicked and called racist names outside the meeting. He was at the forum to sell Don't tread on me flags, but he said he found himself with a Service Employees International Union, or SEIU, member in his face, calling him the N-word and asking what he was doing peddling his message.

Gladney claims he was punched in the face and two other SEIU members jumped on top of him, yelled racial epithets and kicked and punched him. He said he sought treatment for injuries to his knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face.Also in Missouri, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., faced shouts and jeers even in friendly territory at her town hall forum on Aug. 10.At Poplar Bluff, Mo., the report said, an audience of 500 applauded the loudest when Obama was called a socialist.Another audience member asked, Where's the birth certificate? alluding to the dispute over Obama's still-unreleased eligibility documentation.AP reported McCaskill was visibly frustrated and at one point said, You guys are so mean.

Florida

Rep. Kathy Castor's Aug. 6 town hall meeting in Tampa, Fla., ended abruptly after 1,500 citizens attempted to enter an event intended to hold approximately 250 people.

Hundreds of people remained outside, many of whom had been waiting for hours to attend the meeting. Meanwhile, seats remained empty inside while SEIU workers and other attendees distributed flyers and signs for the Democrat health care plan to audience members.One woman outside shouted, This was supposed to be a town hall meeting. Last time I checked, those were open to the public.Finally, some attendees were allowed in, but hundreds waited in line with signs outside. Castor left 15 minutes into the meeting. Just outside the meeting room, constituents chanted,You work for us,Tyranny, tyranny and Read the bill.A businessman with a shredded shirt reported to police that staffers attacked him, twisting his arm and tearing his watch off. Another, he claims, grabbed him by the neck and tore his shirt. I just came to listen and see what I'm missing about this health care thing because it doesn't make sense to me,he told a reporter.Castor later said the event has strengthened her resolve to promote health care reform.It has strengthened my resolve to stand up for families and seniors,Castor told reporters for Tampa Bay Online. Floridians are bearing a great burden in health care costs, more than almost any other state.

Georgia

Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., hosted an Aug. 10 town hall meeting at the Georgia Perimeter College campus in Clarkston. At least 500 citizens showed up in an auditorium while between 1,000 and 1,500 watched the discussion on closed circuit television screens in the gymnasium. Hundreds of citizens stood in an exceedingly long line to have their voices heard while as many as 500 people left the event. Though there was a mix of booing and cheering, attendees stayed calm during the discussion.

Maryland

In Maryland, Sen. Ben Cardin faced booing and jeering constituents at his Aug. 10 forum as he attempted to defend the health care legislation. According to Fox News, when Cardin said details of how the plan will be funded have not been worked out, attendees shouted, Taxes! and Spend, Ben, spend! When one person asked Cardin for a single example of a government-run program that provided services to citizens at a lower cost, Cardin cited national parks system and Medicare.

The crowd booed and jeered in disapproval.

Earlier, Cardin admitted to receiving nearly 1,600 RSVP's for a town hall meeting at a concert hall that only seated only 500. When and estimated 1,500 showed up for the meeting, protesters lined the streets outside with signs and shouts.

Iowa

More than 200 citizens shared their thoughts on government-run health care with Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, today. On several occasions, he was challenged by the crowd after he declared the current health care system unsustainable.During an Aug 8 event, one man yelled:This is not health reform, this is control, control over our lives.Harkin accused the man of being part of a nationally coordinated effort to disrupt these meetings,but the man said no one sent him to the forum.There were no violent. incidents

Michigan

As WND reported, an irate Michigan father worried over what Obamacare would do to his handicapped adult son said he was threatened after trying to get a direct answer from Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich, on Aug 6. In an interview with Fox, Sola explained how he took his wheelchair-bound adult son to the front of the room to confront Dingell, 83.

Sola said he demanded information about what Obamacare would provide for his son, and Dingell responded with a statement that there is an amendment to address the needs of the handicapped.However, Sola said that amendment doesn't exist.Dingell tried to explain at a town hall that people don't know how much they're already paying to cover the uninsured, but his reasoning was drowned out by protesters.In an MSNBC interview, Dingell later said the town hall protests remind him of Ku Klux Klan protests.Well, the last time I had to confront something like this was when I voted for the civil rights bill and my opponent voted against it,he said.At that time, we had a lot of Ku Klux Klan folks and white supremacists and folks in white sheets and other things running around causing trouble.As WND reported, legislators coming to their home districts in attempt to sell the health care plan to constituents are being met with fierce opposition and huge crowds:Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., was confronted by self-described Democrats who accused their representative of lying about health reform and protested, Why would you try to stuff a health care plan down our throats in a couple days when the president took six months to pick a dog for his kids? Rep. Tim Bishop, D-N.Y., has called off further events after a June 22 event he held in Setauket, N.Y., in which protesters dominated the meeting by shouting criticisms at the congressman for his positions on energy policy, health care and the bailout of the auto industry.Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., got an earful, too – especially on the health-care issue.House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., visited a Denver, Colo., clinic for the homeless to raise support for Obama's health care plan, only to be met by streets lined with protesters opposed to the measure.Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-TX, went out to meet constituents, only to be met with protesters shouting in opposition to the health care bill, Just say no!

At a health care town hall event in Syracuse, N.Y., in July, police were called in to restore order, and at least one heckler was taken away by local police. Close to 100 sign-carrying protesters greeted Rep. Allen Boyd, D-Fla., at a late June community college small-business development forum in Panama City, Fla. Danville, Va., anti-tax tea party activists claimed they were refused an opportunity to ask Rep. Thomas Perriello, D-Va., a question at a town hall event and instructed by a plainclothes police officer to leave the property after they attempted to hold up protest signs.

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., was chased by a crowd saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

The constituents of Rep. John Tanner, D-Tenn., unable to access their representative through a town hall meeting, created a video charging that Tanner has met with Michael Moore and Fidel Castro, But he won't meet his constituents in the 8th District to talk about health care.The biggest source of protests are the health-care bill, the $787 billion economic stimulus package and the cap-and-trade legislation. They're also angry about Barack Obama's refusal to release his birth certificate to prove he is a natural born citizen and constitutionally eligible to serve in the White House.According to an Associated Press report, Obama's top political adviser, David Axelrod, showed Senators in D.C. video of some of the boisterous town-hall meetings and discussed how to respond to disruptions.It's a challenge, no question about it, and you've got to get out there and make the case,Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., said afterward.This is not the time for the faint-hearted.

The establishment media and the Southern Poverty Law Center are again floating the talking point that militia groups and worried gun owners are growing in the United States and that this could portend a violent act of domestic terror, despite the fact that every major domestic terror attack in the 1990’s was carried out by the federal government itself, from Ruby Ridge, to Waco, to the Oklahoma City bombing.Militia groups with gripes against the government are regrouping across the country and could grow rapidly, according to an organization that tracks such trends,reports the Associated Press.The stress of a poor economy and a liberal administration led by a black president are among the causes for the recent rise, the report from the Southern Poverty Law Center says. Conspiracy theories about a secret Mexican plan to reclaim the Southwest are also growing amid the public debate about illegal immigration.The article cites people who own guns and implies that they are domestic terrorists or cop killers in the vein of Richard Poplawski, the Pittsburgh man who gunned down three officers during a domestic dispute earlier this year.The report cites a Homeland Security threat projection which states White supremacists and militias are more violent and thus more likely to conduct mass-casualty attacks on the scale of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.Of course, the irony behind all this is the fact that all the major acts of violence in connection with the militia movement during the 1990’s were committed by the government and federal agents.It was an FBI sniper that killed Randy Weaver’s son and also his wife as she was holding their 10-month-old baby while running for cover during the Ruby Ridge standoff in 1992.It was the BATF that burned the Branch Davidian ranch to the ground, killing seventy-six people including more than 20 children and two pregnant women, during the Waco massacre in 1993.And it was high level FBI officials that groomed Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh in the run up to the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah building in 1995.McVeigh’s accomplice Terry Nichols’ revelation that McVeigh was being steered by a high-level FBI official are supported by a plethora of evidence that proves McVeigh did not act alone and that authorities had prior warnings and were complicit in the bombing.

The Deseret Morning News named the FBI agent at Larry Potts, but that information was later sealed by the court.The affidavit was filed in a lawsuit brought by attorney Jesse Trentadue, whose brother Kenneth was tortured and beaten to death in an Oklahoma City federal prison in 1995. Authorities claimed Trentadue had committed suicide but he was being held in a suicide proof cell at the time and autopsy photos of his body showed he had been shocked with a stun gun, bruised, burned, sliced and then hung.Jesse Trentadue has amassed evidence that his brother was mistaken for one of Timothy McVeigh’s alleged bombing accomplices and in attempting to get him to talk, federal agents went too far and then tried to instigate a cover-up of the murder.During the process of his lawsuit, Trentadue was able to receive documents with names blacked out that show the FBI’s OKC bombing informants were conducting armed robberies with Timothy McVeigh in order to fund the construction of the fertilizer bomb used in the attack on the federal building.One of the foreign informants was actually the explosives instructor who taught him how to make the bomb,said Trentadue, confirming that Nichols told him the criminal activities were part of a process of creating a ledger or a storyboard to which the government’s version of events could later be pinned to.The documents also show that McVeigh called Elohim City two days before the bombing asking for help. Four months before the bombing, an FBI informant told his superiors of the attack plan and said that the Alfred P. Murrah building had been scouted.Just like 9/11, the official story of the Oklahoma City Bombing, that McVeigh alone carried out the attack using a fertilizer truck bomb, is contradicted by a plethora of eyewitness account as well as physical and circumstantial evidence.

- In early April 1995 a Ryder truck identical to the one used in the bombing was filmed by a pilot during an overflight of of an area near Camp Gruber-Braggs, Oklahoma. A June 17th, 1997 Washington Post article authenticates the photos as being exactly what they appear to be, photos of a Ryder truck in a clandestine base at Camp Gruber-Braggs. Why were the military in possession of a Ryder truck housed in a remote clandestine army base days before the Alfred P. Murrah bombing?
- In a 1993 letter to his sister, McVeigh claimed that he was approached by military intelligence and had joined an elite squad of government paid assassins. McVeigh often contradicted himself and changed his story on a whim to fit in with the latest government version of events. Is the Camp Grafton footage evidence of McVeigh’s enrollment in such a clandestine program?
- Multiple reports of Arabs at the scene assisting McVeigh were ignored and surveillance tapes were withheld under national security. The likely reason for this was the fact that Bush senior and Clinton were responsible for bringing in nearly 1,000 Iraqi soldiers captured by U.S. forces during the 1991 Persian Gulf War, some of whom were involved in the bombing.
- The FBI claimed McVeigh scouted the Alfred P. Murrah building weeks before the bombing and yet on the morning of the attack he stopped at a local gas station to ask directions, lending credibility to the new claims that he was being controlled by other conspirators and that the target of the bombing had been changed.
- Original reports of two explosions and several failed devices being defused by bomb squads were buried by the establishment as the official explanation that McVeigh acted alone was pushed. Scientific analysis conducted by General Benton K. Partin revealed core columns were blown out from within the building and the extensive damage to the Alfred P. Murrah building was completely inconsistent with the explanation of a single and relatively weak fertilizer truck bomb.
- Many eyewitnesses reported that bomb squads in full reaction gear were seen around the building immediately before the blast. With whose parental principles and values? Their own? Certain experts’? From what field and theory of childhood development? As if there are one-size-fits-all parenting techniques! As we reported earlier this month, the UK Labour government announced its intention to fund an expansion of its Family Intervention Projects, a program which is centered around home visits by state social workers whereby agents enter the private homes of citizens to ensure that children go to bed on time, attend school and eat proper meals.Surveillance cameras are also installed in homes as well as state-run dormitories so government spies can keep an eye on whether parents are mistreating kids and whether the kids are fulfilling their obligations to the government under a pre-signed contract.Another key aspect of the program is that parents deemed responsible by the government are handed the power to denounce and report bad parents who allow their children to engage in bad behavior. Even though the nation is 73 per cent self-sufficient in food production, higher than during the 1950s, the food chain is at risk from global influences such as a worldwide increase in population, climate change bringing extreme weather patterns, higher oil prices and more crops being grown for bio-fuel instead of food. Supplies in future may also be disrupted by animal disease outbreaks, disruption of power supplies, trade disputes and interruptions for shipping and at ports. The UK however has one of the highest cereal production capabilities in the world with seven tonnes grown per hectare, compared a world average of 3.3 tonnes per hectare. In the event of an extreme event, cereal crops would be used to feed the nation and ensure that each person received sufficient daily calories.But people would have to consume less —the average number of calories eaten per day in the early 1960s was about 2,100, whereas the most recent figure compiled by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation is 2,800. Even during the Second World War Britain did not have to rely wholly on domestic food production, but Hilary Benn, the Cabinet Minister with overall responsibility for food policy, has ordered officials to prepare for a scenario where the country could feed itself.In the event of an extreme emergency the most dramatic consequence would be every person eating a predominantly vegetarian diet — more cereals, fruit and vegetables and less meat and poultry. Cereals used to feed farm animals would be shifted into human food production.

A paper setting out the food security assessment states that the food on offer would be a highly restricted, if sufficiently nutritious diet. One of the biggest threats to the supply chain would be restrictions in trade of meat and poultry from Argentina and Brazil or of GM soya, the main commodity used to feed livestock in Britain. According to a Fox report, the Pentagon is planning to make available military troops – if they are needed – to help FEMA respond to a flu outbreak.The report said Defense Secretary Robert Gates is preparing to sign an order letting the military set up regional teams to help FEMA.Americans should be gravely concerned when all the pieces are put together,Clymer said.We have a strain of flu which has produced mild symptoms so far, and yet it appears there's a well-orchestrated world-wide effort to put draconian measures in place for a pandemic.Clymer also cited the WHO recommendations that would provide, essentially, for an indefinite stay in a quarantine camp for those who refuse a vaccination. LUGUNGU, Congo -- For the women of eastern Congo, a U.S.-backed Congolese military operation meant to save them from abusive rebels has turned into a nightmare of its own.An already staggering epidemic of rape has become markedly worse since the January deployment of tens of thousands of poorly trained, poorly paid Congolese soldiers, with people in front-line villages such as this one saying the soldiers are not so much hunting rebels as hunting women. And so as the sun dropped behind the soaring jungle here one recent day, little girls, mothers and grandmothers began heading home, some closing curtains and padlocking wooden doors. It was time, they explained, to lock themselves indoors. To avoid getting raped, after 6 p.m., women are not allowed to go out of the house,said Maria Bitondo, who said she was among three women attacked by a soldier last month.With the soldiers here, no woman is safe to go out and walk. We do not even go to the bathroom at night.On Monday, a coalition of 88 aid groups called the operation, which is supported by the United Nations, a human tragedy and urged Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is to visit eastern Congo on Tuesday, to push for better civilian protection. Clinton has vowed to make the prevention of sexual violence a priority in Congo, where the United States pays about a quarter of the cost of U.N. peacekeeping efforts. We have to speak out against the impunity of those in positions of authority who either commit these crimes or condone them,Clinton said at a town hall meeting in the capital of Kinshasa on Monday. She added,There are even some cases of these terrible crimes committed by members of the Congolese military.But U.S officials have also applauded the operation, calling it an important diplomatic step in mending a destructive relationship between Congo and Rwanda. The operation, which is being supported with helicopters, trucks and other logistics by U.N. peacekeepers here, is targeting Rwandan rebels including some who fled here after participating in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Although all sides in Congo's messy 15-year conflict have used rape as a weapon of war -- particularly the Rwandan rebels -- the spike since January is being widely blamed mostly on the army. The number of soldiers roaming these eastern hills has almost tripled to 60,000, and rapes have doubled or tripled in the areas they are deployed. Aid groups said the number of rapes so far this year is probably in the thousands.Though Congolese President Joseph Kabila recently declared a policy of zero tolerance for sexual violence, fewer than a dozen soldiers have been convicted of rape this year. In May, the U.N. Security Council handed Kabila a list of five senior army officials, including a general, accused of rape, but so far none have been prosecuted.After reaching an area, the soldiers are taking everything there as the spoils of war, including the women,said Honore Bisimwa, who works with a nonprofit group, Olame Center, trying to educate soldiers about rape laws.They take them like property.In this jungle-matted territory, about 5,000 soldiers are on the move, including a portion of 12,000 ex-rebels and militiamen folded into the army after a recent peace deal. In February, they set up a base in the territorial capital of Shabunda, where U.N. peacekeepers also have a base, then marched by foot into smaller front-line villages along narrow dirt roads traversed daily by women heading to farms and stooped over hauling jugs of water and stacks of wood. Soon after, villagers began complaining of looting, and women began making their way to health clinics. In less than three months, more than 100 rapes were reported in the area, said Adele Sikanabo, a local activist, adding that there are so many we don't know about.I'd say 99 percent are by soldiers,she said.And every week, it continues I hear them say, You think we'll stay here without women?! We need women! As women here do most mornings, Madelena Ngalya left the village around 9 a.m. one recent day and walked alone along a path through the jungle to her farm. The 56-year-old widow had been planting there for about an hour when she saw a soldier at the edge of the field. He walked toward her.I started trembling when I saw him, she said. I felt unable to cry, even to scream. I said, My son, how are you?

The soldier asked whether she was by herself.

I said,I'm alone here,she said. He said,If you cry, we have many soldiers in the jungle, and when others hear you cry, they will come to you, too.My body was like dead. Then he did what he wanted to do.On the same day Ngalya was raped, in the same area, around the same hour, soldiers raped four more women -- the youngest 18 and pregnant, and one older than 70. Three other women, including Bitondo, narrowly escaped the assault of another soldier while they were out cutting firewood. He started saying, We are suffering. We left our wives very far, we are going to die, and you are here like this,Bitondo said.We started running.The soldier chased after her friend, 20-year-old Rosa Musombwa, who took off so fast she left her flip-flops behind. When the soldier caught her skirt, she twisted out of it and kept on running through the jungle. When he caught her again by her underwear, she ripped them off and kept running, finally jumping into a sandy river. The soldier jumped in after her, but finally gave up.Not one soldier from the 52nd brigade, which is in charge of the area, has been arrested, military officials said.After the spate of attacks, women imposed the curfew, and they now go to their farms only in groups of five or six and accompanied by men.If [soldiers] meet you, they will rape you, Ngalya said.They don't fear anything.She and other women wonder whether their own fiercely patriarchal society is encouraging soldiers to rape. Girls here are often forced to marry as young as 13. In some traditions, a kind of ritualized rape is part of a boy's coming of age. Prostitution is common. And in general, Bitondo said with a sense of exhausted humor, women are expected not so much to enjoy their husbands as service them.

MSNBC’s Carlos Watson introduced a segment on his show yesterday by wondering whether calling Obama a socialist was becoming a code word, whether or not socialist is becoming the new n-word for some angry upset birthers and others.Watson then said there was a line of responsibility that had to be drawn which extended to the words we choose, including how we use even legitimate words like socialist.Watson’s guest then agreed with the host that the political dialogue has certain boundaries.The Orwellian move to reduce our vocabulary by effectively frowning upon the use of words that in reality have no racial connotations at all is another example of how political correctness and the race card is being used to eviscerate free speech while shielding the Obama administration from growing fury over his big government agenda.

A flash flood watch issued for anticipated torrential rains was also canceled.A high surf warning was replaced by a high surf advisory, with waves along east-facing shores expected to range form 8 to 12feet.Oahu and Kauai could get up to 2 inches of rain Tuesday night and the same amount Wednesday, while an inch of rain was possible Tuesday night and again Wednesday on Maui, forecasters said.Residents of Oahu could expect winds of around 15 mph with bursts as high as 20 mph Tuesday night. The same winds could reach Kauai on Wednesday. On Maui, winds were only expected to get up to 10 mph.As a precaution, state Civil Defense officials said they would remain on alert until Felicia passed all the way through the state.It was the second time in as many years that the islands escaped relatively unscathed from a major storm.In 2007, Hurricane Flossie sideswiped the Big Island with only intermittent rain and moderate winds. NEW YORK (Reuters) – Stormy weather is brewing in the Atlantic Ocean, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.The second tropical depression of the season formed over the far eastern Atlantic Ocean early Tuesday, and will likely strengthen into the basin's first named storm over the next day or so, the Center forecast in a report.Most weather models forecast the system would head west-northwest over the next five days toward the Bahamas, the U.S. East Coast and possibly the oil-rich Gulf of Mexico.Energy traders, however, pointed out it was too soon to say where the system might make landfall, if at all.The NHC said the center of the depression was about 350 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands, which are off the West Coast of Africa. The system was moving west over the open ocean at nearly 13 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds near 30 mph.

The NHC forecast the depression would strengthen into the first tropical storm of the Atlantic season with winds of 39 to 73 mph within 24 hours. If the system does reach such storm status, it would be named Ana.After becoming a tropical storm, however, the NHC does not expect the system to strengthen into a hurricane over the next five days.Last year at this time, there were already five named storms in the Atlantic basin.Energy traders watch for storms that could enter the Gulf of Mexico and threaten U.S. oil and natural gas platforms and refineries along the coast.

CISHAN, Taiwan – Military helicopters ferried stricken villagers to safety Tuesday from remote Taiwanese communities hit by Typhoon Morakot that left at least 70 dead, but hundreds were still feared trapped by a torrent of mud and rock that buried their homes.Choppers hovered over affected villages looking for signs of life. While rains were still falling, floodwaters receded Tuesday, and many of the aircraft were landing to send out squads of soldiers to look for survivors, photos released by the military showed. Special forces found more than 900 people who had fled three villages in the south, according to the military.One helicopter crashed into a mountain as it flew on a mission to rescue villagers from the island's heavily wooded south, which was worst hit by the storm. Disaster official Chen Chung-hsien said it was unclear if the two pilots and one technician had survived the crash.Morakot, which means emerald in Thai language, dumped as much as 80 inches (two meters) of rain over the weekend on Taiwan, the worst flooding in 50 years. It then moved on to China, where authorities evacuated 1.5 million people and some 10,000 homes were destroyed.Eight people have died in three provinces in eastern China, the Civil Affairs Ministry said. TOKYO (AFP) – Powerful earthquakes just over 10 minutes apart rattled Japan and India on Tuesday, triggering panic on fears of a tsunami in the Andaman Islands and injuring more than 100 people southwest of Tokyo.The unrelated quakes struck in the early hours, shutting down Japanese bullet train services and a nuclear power plant and causing a landslide that closed a major highway near the Japanese capital.A 43-year-old woman was found dead after the tremor, buried under a pile of books, said a prefectural police official in Shizuoka, west of Tokyo. But sometimes an example of anti-Christian bile comes along that is so blatant, misleading and littered with judgmental smugness, that I find it difficult to remain silent.Consider the left-wing organization J Street, which claims to be a pro-Israel advocacy group, but which, oddly enough, never misses a chance to slam Israeli policies, particularly when the Jewish State dares defend itself against Islamic terrorism. J Street released a bordering-on-hysteria press release last month to coincide with the annual Christians United for Israel (CUFI) conference in Washington, D.C. Here is the most relevant excerpt:J Street opposes an unholy alliance between right-wing Christian Zionist evangelicals and pro-Israel organizations. Besides being out of step with fundamental Jewish American values, Hagee’s so-called support for Israel is actually a means to an apocalyptic end of destruction or conversion for the Jewish people.In our search for allies in the fight to keep Israel secure, American Jews should neither compromise our core Jewish values of tolerance and justice, nor gloss over the reality of the damage the settlement enterprise causes to Israel and the prospects for peace.Where to begin? First off, let’s try a little experiment. Substitute devout, Koran-believing Muslims or Torah-believing Jews for right-wing Christian Zionists.The outcry from leftist groups like J Street would undoubtedly be loud and intense. But slander Christian evangelicals as J Street does in this outrageously bigoted press release, and it registers nary a blip on the radar of the mainstream media or most civil rights groups.

Indeed, J Street’s statement goes far beyond criticizing the views of Pastor John Hagee, who organized the CUFI conference. The group is, of course, perfectly free to criticize Hagee if it disagrees with his personal viewpoints. This is a free country. But by tarring all evangelical Christian supporters of Israel as part of some sinister movement that is unholy,apocalyptic and destructive for the Jewish people, J Street descends into stereotyping and demonization of the worst kind.Since I spent two full days covering the CUFI conference at the Washington Convention Center on July 21 and 22 (watch my report on the event here and read my blog entry here), let me give some personal observations on what I saw and heard-and what J Street is so contemptuous of.Not once-in the course of some 20 hours of coverage and countless conversations with conference-goers-did I hear the terms apocalypse, Armageddon, Antichrist,or End Times,mentioned. Nor did I hear any discussion of the Book of Revelation or of converting Jews. I realize this may come as a shock to J Street, which apparently views such events as fire-and-brimstone hatefests complete with snake taming and calls to nuke Mecca. What I witnessed instead were thousands of attendees, Christian, Jewish and secular, expressing a genuine, deep and heartfelt love for the Land of Israel-its history, beauty and legacy—and especially, its people. As you can see from my report, the place was literally a sea of Israeli and American flags: a true celebration of the Jewish State. There were Hebrew prayers, Hebrew songs, shofars, Torah readings and passionate speeches by Jewish leaders, lawmakers and religious figures. There were also some tears shed. I know it may all sound very kumbaya,but I have covered countless manufactured, shallow mega-events in DC over the past six years and let me tell you: what I saw at CUFI was 100 percent genuine.If this was the kind of doom-and-gloom affair that J Street alludes to, I must have missed it. So must have Senator Joe Lieberman, Rep. Shelley Berkley and talk radio hosts Dennis Prager and Michael Medved: all prominent, proud Jews who spoke at the CUFI gala.Since the folks at J Street obviously have a very narrow view of what it means to be a Christian supporter of Israel, let me enlighten them a bit by sharing my own personal story. I was raised in a heavily Catholic area of working class Philadelphia by a father who was a veteran of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division. Not surprisingly, my Dad was a big military history buff and a close follower of current events. He passed those passions on to my brother and me. By the time I reached my teen years, we would stay up, sometimes into the wee hours, discussing history’s great empires, battles and military leaders.Maybe it was the fact that we Philly guys always love an underdog. But my dad was one tough dude, and there was no country he admired more for its grit and determination than Israel.That tiny sliver of land,he used to marvel.They’re surrounded by enemies on all sides. And yet still they pull off victory after victory. Those are some tough Jews! From Moshe Dayan to Entebbe, from King David to Camp David, through my father, I became well acquainted with Israeli history in my formative years and developed a lasting admiration for the Land and its people. As I reached high school, I was also fortunate enough to develop great friendships with Jewish teammates, teachers and coaches.Nowhere did my religious beliefs factor into those friendships. As a matter of fact, all of this happened years before I even picked up a Bible or began taking my Christianity seriously. Interestingly enough, I found that my buddies from the neighborhood in Philly shared my positive view of Israel. They may not have been big observers of geopolitics, but they were hugely patriotic. common sense told them that the Israelis were fighting the good fight and were kindred spirits: a free, democratic people who were loyal allies of the United States.

When I finally did get around to picking up a Bible about seven years ago, I discovered a startling thing: this Book was essentially a history of Israel and the Jewish people up until the first century AD. Even more jarring to my senses was the realization that Jesus was a Jewish rabbi who fiercely loved his fellow Jews. His mother, Mary, was also a Jew. So were all twelve apostles. In fact, Christianity was founded by—you guessed it—Jews. In addition, Abraham, Moses, Joseph, King David and all the Old Testament heroes who I had grown to love and admire so much were Israeli Jews. I began to realize that Christianity owed a huge debt to Israel and the Jewish people. It may sound crazy to some, but let’s face it: this is both a historically and biblically undeniable fact, and-apologies to J Street-has nothing to do with the end of the world.Bringing it back to the secular level, the friendships I have developed with Israeli colleagues over the past six years, and especially my trip to Israel last November, have solidified my support for the country. As if I didn’t realize it before, walking through the besieged city of Sderot and seeing Hamas missiles literally stamped Made in Iran truly brought home the fact that Israel’s enemies are America’s enemies. We share a common radical Islamic foe that seeks our destruction. That alone is reason enough for mutual understanding and support.I strongly suspect that the vast majority of attendees at the CUFI conference view Israel in a similar way. Or as JTA’s Eric Fingerhut—who also covered the event—puts it:I've talked to enough Christian Zionists over the past few years to believe that for the vast majority of them, their support for the Jewish state is genuinely motivated by Genesis's admonitition that God will bless those who bless the Jewish people, as well as their respect for Judaism as a foundation for Christianity or even their general beliefs about U.S. foriegn policy.In closing, if J Steet truly has Israel’s best interests at heart, why on earth would it seek to alienate an estimated 70 million American evangelical Christians who are strongly inclined towards Israel during a time of great need? JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israel's foreign minister warned on Monday against attempting to impose a Middle East deal, saying the most peace talks can achieve for the coming year is improving security and the Palestinian economy.The Palestinians' radical and uncompromising positions on Jerusalem, the right of return and the settlement blocs create an unbridgeable gap between us and them, Avigdor Lieberman told a delegation of US Democratic lawmakers.Therefore, Israeli policy must be based on reality and not illusion while maintaining the dialogue between us and the Palestinians, improving security arrangements and the economic condition of the Palestinians.This is the maximum we can reach in the coming years, Lieberman's office quoted the ultra-nationalist minister as saying.US President Barack Obama has vowed to work vigorously to end the decades-old conflict and his administration is attempting to put the faltering Middle East peace talks back on track following their suspension in December.The United States is also putting heavy pressure on hawkish Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to freeze settlement construction in the occupied West Bank -- a key Palestinian demand for talks to resume.

But Lieberman warned against any attempt to impose a peace deal.

Any other extravagant goal such as imposing an agreement that is limited in time, would again end in failure, disappointment and even confrontation,he told the US delegation.This is a realistic policy and all the rest is spin, public relations and lack of understanding of the processes taking place at this time.Lieberman on Monday also lashed out at Nadav Tamir, Israel's consul in Boston who had warned in a leaked memo that the government's policies on settlements were harming ties with the United States.Anyone who disagrees with, and is uncomfortable with government policies can resign,his spokesman quoted him as saying.Washington has repeatedly called for a total freeze on Jewish settlement construction.Last week Israel drew the ire of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton after two Palestinian families were evicted from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah area of east Jerusalem.President Shimon Peres later told the delegation Israel had agreed to stop building new settlements and that the only unresolved issue was construction within the bounds of those already there.The only point where we disagree with America is on building in existing settlements,he said.I believe this is negotiable.Peres also said Israel and the Palestinians were for now incapable of agreeing over key sticking point Jerusalem.I know that there is a solution for Jerusalem for the future,he said.But right now we cannot achieve it.

Israel occupied east Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it, but the Palestinians see the city as the capital of their future state.Interior Minister Eli Yishai said, however, that Israel must continue building in settlements on the outskirts of Jerusalem.I hope we can convince the Americans to allow this construction,Yishai told reporters.

Had the international community not been sympathetically predisposed to lap up the lie, Jordan obviously couldn't pull it off. Its wholesale fabrication hinges on a world that contentedly collaborates in hoodwinking itself.So deceit blithely marches on.Its latest installment is the artificially concocted kingdom's decision to strip untold numbers of Palestinians of Jordanian citizenship. Those who were Jordanian for decades suddenly aren't. It's like the infamous Soviet encyclopedias' loose-leaf pages, which were removed and replaced with the latest authoritative versions of what once was.The past is ever-malleable in the service of current agendas.According to Jordanian Interior Minister Nayef al-Kadi, the aim is to preempt the possibility of anyone resurrecting reminders that Jordan is part and parcel of what's called Palestine. It's indeed the largest chunk thereof. That being the case, Palestinians - whether born east or west of the Jordan River - are Jordan's natural citizens (regardless of whatever name it or they adopt). Kadi, under his monarch's orders, is now out to underscore the falsehood that Jordan is not Palestine just as Palestine is not Jordan.Thereby no future peace deal could rubber-stamp Jordanian domicile for so-called Palestinians. Instead they'd be driven to overrun Israel and turn it into the third Arab state in the original jurisdiction of the post-World War I British Mandate over Palestine.

Otherwise Jordan would forfeit all proceeds from the gargantuan deception it labored so hard to market to a world eager to be deceived - i.e., the synthetic Jordanian and Palestinian ethnicities, along with the notion that these recent-vintage nationalities are dissimilar from each other and deserve self-determination in separate homelands: Jordan and Palestine.This cock-and-bull contention begat the image of the stateless Palestinians - aggrieved indigenous inhabitants striving desperately to throw off the yoke of foreign (Jewish) occupation.Until 1948 Palestine was synonymous with the Hebrew Eretz Yisrael. The Palestinian epithet was largely reserved for Jews and used by them. Local Arabs preferred allegiance to Greater Syria or Iraq.Golda Meir used to quip: I am a Palestinian, but don't like the name. Palestine is a name the Romans gave Eretz Yisrael with the express purpose of infuriating defeated Jews... Why should we use a spiteful name meant to humiliate us?... In 1921, 78 percent of what the League of Nations designated as the national home of the Jewish people was ripped off and presented as a gift to Abdullah, son of Sharif Hussein ibn Ali, Mecca's Hashemite emir (also self-proclaimed caliph of all Muslims). Hussein later (1924) lost control of Islam's holiest city and surrounding Hejaz to a rival clan, the Saudis. Had he won, we'd be speaking today of Hashemite Arabia. As is, we're saddled with Hashemite Jordan.Out to recompense their Hashemite lackeys, the Brits enthroned Abdullah's younger brother Faisal as king of Greater Syria. After the French expelled Faisal, London manufactured for him a make-believe realm called Iraq. His grandson Faisal II was deposed, executed and his corpse dragged through Baghdad's streets in 1958, but England's unnatural Iraqi fusion remains and continues to disturb the world.Abdullah sought the title of emir of Palestine. Britain made him settle for Transjordan. No Transjordanian nation appears in human chronicles. It was conceived on Palestinian soil by Perfidious Albion. That was the first division of Palestine.

In 1950, Transjordan annexed the West Bank (the name they gave the territory occupied after the Arab invasion of new-born Israel in 1948) and became the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Its leaders, including the late King Hussein, stressed over and over in numerous pronouncements that Jordan and Palestine are one and the same.So did Palestinian leaders, including Yasser Arafat. The Palestinian Covenant, in fact, covets all of Jordan - precisely because it's Palestine.Yet eventually it became expedient, PR-wise, to claim that Palestine exists exclusively west of the mini-river, justifying the campaign for a second Palestinian Arab state.Fearing that his Palestinian subjects would topple their imported Hashemite rulers, Hussein kicked out the PLO in Black September 1970. Too bad. Had he failed, Arafat would have taken Amman over and nobody could today deny that Palestine is divided among Jews and Arabs, with the Arabs owning nearly four-fifths thereof.Now Hussein's son Abdullah II seeks to rewrite history once more in the well-trodden Jordanian tradition. His father dropped the claim to what he branded the West Bank but didn't revive the ludicrous moniker of Transjordan. After 17 years of annexation (1950-67), the Jordan trademark gained global acceptance. It rang authentic. Why then return to the obvious fake? Jordan's population, though, is overwhelmingly Palestinian. The only exceptions are the Beduin who accompanied Abdullah I from Hejaz. Like the Hashemites, they're foreigners. Now these outsiders design to delegitimize the natives. Expectedly, governments and human rights NGOs worldwide are silent.Jordan was born of fraud, which it's fated thereafter to prop up via unremitting retroactive repairs to the past - even the distant past. Not too many years back Jordan TV aired a documentary on Jerusalem portraying ancient Jebusites as Arabs.Of course, were the Hebrews not the People of the Book, those Jerusalem-area Canaanites known as Jebusites would have never made their exceedingly fleeting appearance on the pages of history, or on JTV.

For anyone who forgot the brief biblical references, the Jebusites were the folks from whom King David conquered a wee hamlet he later turned into his capital. The books of Judges and Ezra indicate they intermarried and assimilated among the Israelites.Posthumously Arabizing these Jebusites presumably establishes an Arab claim to Zion. JTV concomitantly magnified the Jebusites' contribution to mankind to proportions that would have doubtlessly astounded them. JTV outrightly expunged Jews from Jerusalem's annals, save for one abrupt but indispensable appearance in the Judenrein city. Villainous Jews arrived suddenly out of nowhere and stayed just long enough to crucify Jesus, described as a Palestinian Arab prophet.JTV even treated us to recipes from the Jebusite kitchen. These would have altogether floored the long-lost Jebusites, as it appears that their favorite ingredients were tomatoes and chili peppers, which, alas, only reached the Old World 2,500 years later, when Spaniards brought them back from America.Perhaps, however, the enterprising Jebusites beat Columbus there, thus establishing an Arab claim to the Western Hemisphere. Barak (R) and the new Torah scroll (Photo Ariel Hermoni, Defense Ministry)Defense Minister Ehud Barak took part Sunday evening in a ceremony welcoming a new scroll of the Torah at the Ohel Yitzhak Synagogue located on the margins of the Muslim Quarter in Jerusalem's Old City, not far from the Western Wall.The synagogue was renovated from funds donated by Jewish-American millionaire Erwin Moskowitz, who made headlines recently due to his involvement in a construction project in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, where he plans to build 22 housing units for Jewish residents.The Sheikh Jarrah project sparked a row worldwide, with the United States, Russia, France and many other countries condemning Israel's plan to build in the area.

Barak arrived at the synagogue ceremony on the backdrop of harsh protest and pressure by the international community against the government's legitimization for the housing of Jews in the eastern part of the city.An official at Barak's office rejected the claims, saying that the defense minister does not have to apologize for taking part in a ceremony welcoming a new Scroll of the Torah at a synagogue which has existed since 1867.The official said that the defense minister took part in a ceremony at a synagogue located in the Western Wall and that the Torah scroll was donated by friends of the Association for the Wellbeing of Israel's Soldiers in the United states.The synagogue building is sponsored by Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovich, but is physically located within the Muslim Quarter.The synagogue in question was inaugurated last September, after being renovated and reconstructed with a donation from Moskowitz, who helps Religious Zionism associations buy houses and buildings in Jerusalem neighborhoods where the population is mostly comprised of Arab residents.Minister Barak said during the ceremony, We are now several days after Tisha B'Av and remember very well why the First Temple was ruined and why the Second Temple was ruined, also because of unfounded hatred.We should implement the lessons of those days at that time. We bear the responsibility in our country and for the State of Israel's security and for the security of Jews' lives anywhere in the world and we must always remember that despite all the disagreements between us, we are all brothers. We have the land, the security and the knowledge that we are brothers.

The minister need not apologize
The defense minister's office said in response to Ynet's inquiry, Not one of us had an idea that the synagogue is not part of the Western Wall compound. We had no idea that Moskowitz is one of the benefactors of the synagogue renovations.The Torah scroll that was brought there was a donation from the Falik family, a friend of the Association for the Wellbeing of Israel's Soldiers. The defense minister need not apologize for attending a ceremony for introducing a new Torah scroll to a synagogue, which was established by Jews already 142 years ago.The area of the Western Wall complex, next to which is the said synagogue, has in recent years been at the heart of another controversy. Israel plans on building a new bridge over Mugrabi Gate. Prime Minister Netanyahu recently rejected these plans out of concern that decisions made on the eve of the Ramadan holiday could ignite Jerusalem streets and cause an international outcry.Another example of the flammable state of affairs in east Jerusalem took place Saturday night when a number of National Union Knesset members toured the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, causing clashes to break out between Arab and Jewish residents there. Five people were arrested on suspicion of throwing stones. Two others were detained for investigation under suspicion that they endangered lives on a major thoroughfare. We write in support of your efforts to encourage Arab states to normalize relations with the State of Israel. In your June 4th address to the Muslim world, you highlighted the key role that Arab states can play in furthering the peace process and called on them to openly recognize Israel’s legitimacy. Secretary Clinton underscored these remarks when she stated that Arab countries have a responsibility to support the Palestinian Authority with words and deeds, to take steps to improve relations with Israel and to prepare their publics to embrace peace and accept Israel’s place in the region.We applaud these comments and agree with you and Secretary Clinton that Arab states must do more to end their isolation of Israel.Over the past few months Israel has taken concrete measures to reaffirm its commitment to advancing the peace process. Notably, Prime Minister Netanyahu has publically expressed support for the two-state solution and called for the immediate resumption of peace negotiations. We have also been encouraged by Israeli efforts to improve the daily lives of Palestinians, through measures such as removing roadblocks, assisting with economic development in the West Bank, and supporting the training of professional Palestinian Authority security personnel. These actions have demonstrated that Israel is willing to back up its words with concrete actions, even in the face of continuing threats to its security.We encourage Arab leaders to take similar tangible steps to demonstrate their commitment to the peace process. Such steps could include ending the Arab League boycott of Israel, meeting openly with Israeli officials, establishing open trade relations with Israel, issuing visas to Israeli citizens, and inviting Israelis to participate in academic and professional conferences and sporting events. We also believe that Arab states must immediately and permanently end official propaganda campaigns which demonize Israel and Jews.

Given these facts, we would like to understand what steps you are urging Arab states to take and what your expectations are from Arab states in the coming weeks and months. We also hope that you will continue to press Arab leaders to consider dramatic gestures toward Israel similar to those taken previously by brave leaders like King Hussein of Jordan and Anwar El-Sadat of Egypt. Fatah's sixth General Assembly has shown that the 44-year-old faction is still not ready to transform itself from a revolutionary movement into a governing body - one that cares about establishing institutions and infrastructure for a future Palestinian state.Instead, Fatah seems determined more than ever to maintain its status as a national liberation movement.In light of the conference, many Palestinians are beginning to draw parallels between Fatah and Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath Party. As far as they are concerned, Fatah remains part of the problem and not part of any solution.The fiery rhetoric of the delegates and the signs and graffiti on the walls of the conference hall in Bethlehem are testimony that Fatah continues to live in the past and not in the present.Moreover, most of the resolutions that were adopted by the 2,000 Fatah delegates appear as if they were taken directly out of the fifth General Assembly that was held in Tunis two decades ago.The conference is about to conclude its meeting by endorsing almost the same political platform that has been accompanying Fatah since its founding.Delegates spent more time talking about the past than the present or future. They chose to blame Israel and Hamas for almost all the miseries that have hit Fatah and the Palestinians in recent years.The delegates spent more time attacking Israel and Hamas than discussing the reasons behind Fatah's defeat in the January 2006 parliamentary election and its expulsion from the Gaza Strip a year later.

For some time during the conference, one got the impression that Israel and Hamas were responsible for Fatah's financial corruption and incompetence.Had it not been for the security fence and the construction in settlements, Fatah would be less corrupt. And had it not been for Hamas's violent takeover of the Gaza Strip, Fatah would have succeeded in turning the Palestinian territories into the Middle East's Hong Kong.In short, everyone is to blame for the miseries of the Palestinians and Fatah except for Fatah.Instead of forming committees to look into ways of reforming Fatah, injecting fresh blood into its veins and restoring its lost credibility among a majority of Palestinians, the delegates preferred to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate the death of Arafat.Why is there a need for such a commission if Fatah has already (and unanimously) determined that Israel was behind the assassination of the Palestinian leader? And why establish a commission of inquiry into the defeat of Fatah in the 2006 election when every Palestinian knows that Hamas won that vote largely because of the state of financial corruption and anarchy under the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority? Most of the Fatah officials who appeared before the gathering spoke and acted as if they were still in the battlefields of Lebanon and Jordan.In scenes reminiscent of the last Fatah conference 20 years ago, old slogans such as Revolution Until Victory,Long Live Palestine and Fatah Will Liberate Palestine were issued by almost all the speakers who took the podium.
Political resolutions adopted by the conference also served as a reminder that Fatah has not changed much despite the Oslo Accords and the departure of its founder and leader.

Leaving no room for doubt that Fatah is not headed toward moderation, one resolution stated that the faction remains committed to its status as a national liberation movement whose goal is to defeat the occupation and achieve independence for the Palestinians. Fatah is part of the Arab liberation movement.Regarding the issue of armed struggle against Israel, Fatah chose ambiguity over straight talk. Aware of the sensitivity surrounding the use of the explosive term - armed struggle - and to avoid a clash with US and European donors, Fatah is now talking about its right to pursue the resistance against Israel in all methods and forms. To Western audiences, Fatah leaders can always argue that they are actually talking about a peaceful resistance where Palestinians, together with Israeli and international activists, hold weekly demonstrations and marches in protest against Israeli policies and measures.On the other hand, the Fatah leaders can always defend their decision to replace the armed struggle term with the need to win the backing (and money) of the West. In addition, they can also explain that the resistance they are talking about includes the right to resort to armed struggle against Israel.Fatah after the conference remains the same Fatah it was before the meeting in Bethlehem. The Fatah leadership did not even see any need to provide its delegates with a report about the financial and administrative performance of the faction over the past 20 years. Why bother to do so when Israel is continuing to build in settlements and when Hamas retains its tight grip on the Gaza Strip? jpost.

Colombia is considered dangerous only for Israelis rendering security services to the Colombian government. Israelis currently staying in these countries are urged to leave immediately.The list also includes a number of specific regions in countries considered safer for travel, such as Sinai, where a large Hezb'allah cell was recently exposed. Court of Appeals dismissed the lawsuit as an infringement on executive branch conduct of foreign policy, calling the matter political.Actually, the Constitution grants the executive and legislative branches certain foreign policy prerogatives (press release from Zionist Organization of America, headquartered in NY City and one of the complainants in a suit in behalf of an American born in Israel, 7/15.)I think this is a factual issue.The State Dept. acts contrary to the facts. Why? What does State Dept. action here indicate about U.S. policy? It indicates that, although Israel controls Jerusalem, and every country names its capital within its jurisdiction even if contested, and although Israel annexed eastern Jerusalem as is its rights under two conditions of international law (as heir to the unallocated territory in the Palestine Mandate and as security against repeated aggression), the U.S. does not recognize Israeli sovereignty in the western or in eastern parts.

This means that the State Dept., should it succeed in pushing Israel out of the Territories and the Golan Heights, would then thrust against Israeli retention of all of Jerusalem. It means that the State Dept. want to transfer much of Israel out of Jewish sovereignty into Arab sovereignty, according to the non-viable dimensions that the General Assembly merely recommended in 1947. There is no legal basis for this, just traditional State Dept. anti-Zionism.Non-viable means that the truncated and separated sections could neither contain Israel’s population nor be defended. It means the end of Israel.It means that the Arabs finally would get to slaughter the Jews there. The State Dept. would be facilitating a second Holocaust even more directly than it facilitated the first one. This is No Recession: It’s a Planned Demolition

Credit is not flowing. In fact, credit is contracting. That means things aren’t getting better; they’re getting worse. When credit contracts in a consumer-driven economy, bad things happen. Business investment drops, unemployment soars, earnings plunge, and GDP shrinks. The Fed has spent more than a trillion dollars trying to get consumers to start borrowing again, but without success. The country’s credit engines are grinding to a halt.Bernanke has pulled out all the stops.Bernanke has increased excess reserves in the banking system by $800 billion, but lending is still slow. The banks are hoarding capital in order to deal with the losses from toxic assets, non performing loans, and a $3.5 trillion commercial real estate bubble that’s following housing into the toilet. That’s why the rate of bank failures is accelerating. 2010 will be even worse; the list is growing. It’s a bloodbath.The standards for conventional loans have gotten tougher while the pool of qualified credit-worthy borrowers has shrunk. That means less credit flowing into the system. The shadow banking system has been hobbled by the freeze in securitization and only provides a trifling portion of the credit needed to grow the economy. Bernanke’s initiatives haven’t made a bit of difference. Credit continues to shrivel.

The S&P 500 is up 50 percent from its March lows. The financials, retail, materials and industrials are leading the pack. It’s a Green Shoots Bear market rally fueled by the Fed’s Quantitative Easing (QE) which is forcing liquidity into the financial system and lifting equities. The same thing happened during the Great Depression. Stocks surged after 1929. Then the prevailing trend took hold and dragged the Dow down 89 percent from its earlier highs. The S&P’s March lows will be tested before the recession is over. Systemwide deleveraging is ongoing. That won’t change.No one is fooled by the fireworks on Wall Street. Consumer confidence continues to plummet. Everyone knows things are bad. Everyone knows the media is lying. Credit is contracting; the economy’s life’s blood has slowed to a trickle. The economy is headed for a hard landing.Bernanke has pulled out all the stops. He’s lowered interest rates to zero, backstopped the entire financial system with $13 trillion, propped up insolvent financial institutions and monetized $1 trillion in mortgage-backed securities and US sovereign debt. Nothing has worked. Wages are falling, banks are cutting lines of credit, retirement savings have been slashed in half, and home equity losses continue to mount. Living standards can no longer be bandaged together with VISA or Diners Club cards. Household spending has to fit within one’s salary. That’s why retail, travel, home improvement, luxury items and hotels are all down double-digits. The easy money has dried up.

According to Bloomberg:

Borrowing by U.S. consumers dropped in June for the fifth straight month as the unemployment rate rose, getting loans remained difficult and households put off major purchases. Consumer credit fell $10.3 billion, or 4.92 percent at an annual rate, to $2.5 trillion, according to a Federal Reserve report released today in Washington. Credit dropped by $5.38 billion in May, more than previously estimated. The series of declines is the longest since 1991. A jobless rate near the highest in 26 years, stagnant wages and falling home values mean consumer spending… will take time to recover even as the recession eases. Incomes fell the most in four years in June as one-time transfer payments from the Obama administration’s stimulus plan dried up, and unemployment is forecast to exceed 10 percent next year before retreating. (Bloomberg)What a mess. The Fed has assumed near-dictatorial powers to fight a monster of its own making, and achieved nothing. The real economy is still dead in the water. Bernanke is not getting any traction from his zero-percent interest rates. His monetization program (QE) is just scaring off foreign creditors. On Friday, Marketwatch reported:The Federal Reserve will probably allow its $300 billion Treasury-buying program to end over the next six weeks as signs of a housing recovery prompt the central bank to unwind one its most aggressive and unusual interventions into financial markets, big bond dealers say.Right. Does anyone believe the housing market is recovering? If so, please check out this chart and keep in mind that, in the first 6 months of 2009, there have already been 1.9 million foreclosures.The Fed is abandoning the printing presses (presumably) because China told Geithner to stop printing money or they’d sell their US Treasuries. It’s a wake-up call to Bernanke that the power is shifting from Washington to Beijing.That puts Bernanke in a pickle. If he stops printing; interest rates will skyrocket, stocks will crash and housing prices will tumble. But if he continues QE, China will dump their Treasuries and the greenback will vanish in a poof of smoke. Either way, the malaise in the credit markets will persist and personal consumption will continue to sputter.

The basic problem is that consumers are buried beneath a mountain of debt and have no choice except to curtail their spending and begin to save. Currently, the the ratio of debt to personal disposable income, is 128% just a tad below its all-time high of 133% in 2007. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco’s Economic Letter: US Household Deleveraging and Future Consumption Growth:The combination of higher debt and lower saving enabled personal consumption expenditures to grow faster than disposable income, providing a significant boost to U.S. economic growth over the period. In the long-run, however, consumption cannot grow faster than income because there is an upper limit to how much debt households can service, based on their incomes. For many U.S. households, current debt levels appear too high, as evidenced by the sharp rise in delinquencies and foreclosures in recent years. To achieve a sustainable level of debt relative to income, households may need to undergo a prolonged period of deleveraging, whereby debt is reduced and saving is increased.Going forward, it seems probable that many U.S. households will reduce their debt. If accomplished through increased saving, the deleveraging process could result in a substantial and prolonged slowdown in consumer spending relative to pre-recession growth rates.(U.S. Household Deleveraging and Future Consumption Growth, by Reuven Glick and Kevin J. Lansing, FRBSF Economic Letter)A careful reading of the FRBSF’s Economic Letter shows why the economy will not bounce back. It is mathematically impossible. We’ve reached peak credit; consumers have to deleverage and patch their balance sheets. Household wealth has slipped $14 trillion since the crisis began. Home equity has dropped to 41% (a new low) and joblessness is on the rise. By 2011, Duetsche Bank AG predicts that 48 percent of all homeowners with a mortgage will be underwater. As the equity position of homeowners deteriorates, banks will further tighten credit and foreclosures will mushroom.The executive board of the IMF does not share Wall Street’s rosy view of the future, which is why it issued a memo that stated:Directors observed that the crisis will have important implications for the role of the United States in the global economy. The U.S. consumer is unlikely to play the role of global buyer of last resort— other regions will need to play an increased role in supporting global growth.The United States will not be the emerge as the center of global demand following the recession. Those days are over. The world is changing and the US role is getting smaller. As US markets become less attractive to foreign exporters, the dollar will lose its position as the world’s reserve currency. As goes the dollar, so goes the empire. SAGGING EMPLOYMENT: A no new jobs recovery

July’s employment numbers came in better than expected (negative 247,000) lowering total unemployment from 9.5% to 9.4%. That’s good. Things are getting worse at a slower pace. What’s striking about the BLS report is that there’s no jobs-surge in any sector of the economy. No signs of life. Outsourcing and offshoring are ongoing, and downsizing is the new path to profitability. Businesses everywhere are anticipating weaker demand. The jobs report is a one-off event; a lull in the storm before the layoffs resume.Unemployment is rising, wages are falling and credit is contracting. In other words, the system is working exactly as designed. All the money is flowing upwards to the gangsters at the top. Here’s an excerpt from a recent Don Monkerud article that sums it all up:During eight years of the Bush Administration, the 400 richest Americans, who now own more than the bottom 150 million Americans, increased their net worth by $700 billion. In 2005, the top one percent claimed 22 percent of the national income, while the top ten percent took half of the total income, the largest share since 1928.Over 40 percent of GNP comes from Fortune 500 companies. According to the World Institute for Development Economics Research, the 500 largest conglomerates in the U.S. control over two-thirds of the business resources, employ two-thirds of the industrial workers, account for 60 percent of the sales, and collect over 70 percent of the profits.In 1955, IRS records indicated the 400 richest people in the country were worth an average $12.6 million, adjusted for inflation. In 2006, the 400 richest increased their average to $263 million, representing an epochal shift of wealth upward in the U.S.Wealth Inequality destroys US Ideals.Working people are not being crushed by accident, but according to plan. It is the way the system is supposed to work. Bernanke knows that sustained demand requires higher wages and a vital middle class. But what does he care. He’s not a public servant. He works for the banks. That’s why the Fed’s monetary policies reflect the goals of the investor class. Bubblenomics is not the way to a strong/sustainable economy, but it is an effective tool for shifting wealth from one class to another. The Fed’s job is to facilitate that objective, which is why the economy is headed for the rocks.The free market is a sham to conceal the crimes of the rich. Read Taibbi. Read Marx. Karl, not Groucho.The financial meltdown is the logical outcome of the Fed’s monetary policies. That’s why it’s a mistake to call the current slump a recession. It’s not. It’s a planned demolition.

BRUSSELS (AFP) – The EU's competition watchdog on Tuesday opened anti-dumping procedures against imports from China of an industrial chemical mainly used to clean metal and glass.There is sufficient evidence to justify the initiation of an investigation into the complaint by the European Chemical Industry Council which believes that imports of the substance, sodium gluconate are being dumped and are thereby causing material injury to the community industry,the European Commission said in the official EU journal.The action is the latest measure taken by European authorities increasingly concerned about the effect of cheap products from China's massive workforce threatening EU manufacturers.Last month China asked the European Union for talks under the WTO's disputes procedure over one of the biggest anti-dumping cases against China, EU measures on imports of Chinese-made screws and bolts.

The sodium gluconate investigation could last up to 15 months under EU rules and the European Commission could impose tariffs on Chinese exports of sodium gluconate if its finds that the allegations are justified.The EU has already imposed such tariffs on a range of products ranging from steel to candles.

The EU's main regulator has approved state aid to banks worth almost a third of the 27-member bloc's GDP - twice as much as predicted earlier, with the highest rescue funds in Ireland and with none paid out in several states of central and eastern Europe.According to a review published by the European Commission on Monday (10 August), between last October and mid-July 2009, the EU's executive approved guarantee measures designed to boost lenders' confidence worth €2.9 trillion and capital injections for struggling banks which amounted to €313 billion.The reaction, seen in Europe and beyond, came last autumn as the world got to grips with the worst financial and economic crisis since the 1930s.According to the principles agreed by EU leaders, the state aid was to restore financial stability and resume credit flows in economy but without unbalancing state budgets or damaging the functioning of the bloc's internal market.Based on these principles, Brussels filed a set of rules which the commission followed when approving national state aid schemes.In its June report, Brussels predicted that public aid to the banking sector would cost Europe up to 16.5 percent of GDP while the current figures suggest that several member states might have undermined future public finances in their attempt to save the banks. This implies increasing explicit future public debt levels or implicit future debt levels. However, it is too early to judge whether thus far the response of governments to the crisis has been disproportionate,the study said.

For most banks in individual countries, a six month period, initially set as the duration of the aid schemes has ended and it is up to the commission to decide which schemes are eligible for extensions for reasons of financial stability.There are deep differences among the member states and the level of their state intervention. Ireland, one of the EU countries most hit by the financial clampdown, received a green light from Brussels for aid representing 231.8 percent of its GDP and banks have taken up almost the whole package.In contrast, nine states - Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania and Slovakia - have not applied for permission to use public funds for such purposes.

Greenpeace dumps boulders in anti-trawling move

Greenpeace boats sailed on Monday (10 August) into Swedish waters and began dumping 180 two-three tonne granite rocks on the seabed to prevent fishermen from using bottom trawling in areas under European Union protection.The area in Kattegat, between Denmark and Sweden, is mainly used by Danish fishermen but is listed under the EU's Habitat Directive because of its unique and rich sea life.Local authorities in Sweden would like to stop bottom trawling in the area, but the decision falls with EU authorities, which have allowed the practice despite the habitat register.Today it is nearly impossible for the responsible authorities in EU member states - in Sweden, the County Administrative Boards - to regulate fisheries which take place in areas designated as marine protected areas,said Greenpeace in Sweden in a briefing.Local fishermen tried on Monday to block the port of Varberg, where a large cargo ship loaded with tonnes of Greenpeace' granite blocks headed out to sea. The head of regional fishermen's association Hallandsfiskarna, Viking Bengtsson, declared at an earlier hearing that the placement of stones was unnecessary,but agreed that reformed fisheries management is needed in the region.The Danish minister responsible for fisheries, Eva Kjer Hansen, said the NGO's action was unacceptable vigilantism and called on her Swedish colleague to stop Greenpeace.It is for the authorities to decide where it is authorised to fish and were it is not authorised. The Greenpeace move is pure vigilantism, imposing losses of fishing opportunities on law-abiding Danish fishermen,Mrs Kjer Hansen said in a statement.She contacted her Swedish colleague Eskil Erlandsson and pointed out that it makes no sense to strike bilateral Danish-Swedish agreements about closing fisheries in certain areas to protect threatened species, if organisations take the law into their own hands and simply close areas to fishing.Sweden's fisheries minister Eskil Erlandsson has not stopped the dumping, however.He said in a comment published by Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter that fish do not recognise any borders and added that problems had to be solved between countries and through internal bodies.The demand from Greenpeace of a unilateral ban in the area concerned is without effect as the areas are covered by the EU's common fisheries policy. It means all countries in the EU hold rights to fish in the area. A ban on just Swedish fishermen would not work, he said.So far only Ireland has managed to introduce local restrictions on fisheries to protect marine environment, while Germany has launched a process to have more areas protected.

EU tries to put aid pressure on Niger

The EU has threatened to end support for Niger after a referendum extending the president's rule. But uranium and oil companies could reduce the bloc's leverage. Denmark has put on hold a bilateral €21 million water and sanitation project.But the aid sums are dwarfed by large-scale commercial investment in Niger's uranium and oil sector.French company Areva is currently building Africa's largest uranium mine in central Niger at a cost of €1.2 billion. Niger supplies 30 percent of France's uranium needs, with French criticism of its former colony sounding less sharp than Denmark's.Niger should return to its constitutional and democratic framework, a French foreign ministry official said on Monday, AFP reports.China National Petroleum Corporation last year also signed a €3.5 billion oil development deal with the country. China has kept silent on the referendum in line with its policy of non-intervention in sovereign states.

Palestinians get EU, Saudi aid worth $255 mln Mon Aug 10, 3:33 pm ET

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) – The cash-strapped Palestinian Authority has received 255 million dollars in aid from Saudi Arabia and the European Union, prime minister Salam Fayyad said on Monday.Oil-rich Saudi Arabia has ordered the transfer of 200 million dollars the Palestinian Authority, Fayyad told reporters at a ceremony during which the EU signed over to the Palestinians 39 million euros (55 million dollars).Fayyad said the Saudi aid was part of a one-billion-dollar financial assistance package pledged in January by Saudi King Abdullah to help the Palestinians deal with a steep financial crisis.I received a call from the Saudi finance minister, Ibrahim al-Assaf, who informed me of King Abdullah's decision to order the transfer of 200 million dollars to the Palestinian Authority's treasury,Fayyad said.The Palestinian Authority received pledges totalling some 12 billion dollars from international conferences in Paris in 2007 and Sharm el-Sheikh in March this year.But Fayyad has repeatedly complained that international donors have been slow to hand over the promised cash due to the political deadlock in the Middle East.During a visit to Norway in June he said that the PA needs 50 million dollars in international aid per month.And in May the Western-backed Palestinian Authority was forced to take out bank loans worth 530 million dollars to cover its operations.The latest EU aid brings to 207 million euros (around 293 million dollars) the total assistance received by the Palestinians from Europe since the beginning of the year.

According to Fayyad, the Palestinian Authority has received a total of 703 million dollars since the beginning of 2009 in international aid, excluding the 200 million dollars announced Monday by Saudi Arabia.US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced on July 24 that the United States had given 200 million dollars to the Palestinian Authority -- part of a 900-million-dollar aid package announced in March.

I can’t get a bead on Larry Sinclair. I’ve read his book, Barack Obama & Larry Sinclair: Cocaine, Sex, Lies & Murder? I’ve watched his videos on YouTube. My normally dependable women’s intuition is not sending me conclusive cues about Sinclair’s veracity.On the other hand, I have no question about Barack Obama’s mendacity.Sinclair is conspicuously candid about his ignominious narrative.He conceded his copious incarcerations early on.Sinclair has been in and out of jail on assorted charges of bamboozlement—including passing bad checks; about which he has been forthright.The president, however, has yet to release his college records, medical records, law school records, Illinois State Bar application, early school records, his passport or his birth certificate.

It is plausible that Sinclair suffers from some form of psychological disorder. That alone does not make him a liar, nor does it mean he is delusional.In his book, Sinclair cites times spent in custody being denied his medications.I would conjecture that some of his medications were for a psychological condition.If that was the case, the anxiety about his meds could suggest he is a patient who is intending to be well and is being medically managed. We can’t know for certain.But we have far more knowledge about Sinclair’s past than we do about Obama’s. Sinclair asserts that he met Obama twice in 1999.Their rendezvous was orchestrated by limo driver, Jagir Multani.Sinclair avers that Multani may have been in the United States illegally. Sinclair alleges that Obama smoked crack cocaine and directed Sinclair to administer a Lewinsky—which Sinclair obliged. According to Sinclair, the following day Obama materialized at Sinclair’s hotel to solicit supplementary Lewinskyization.That was the entirety of their affair, per Sinclair.Expecting to be serviced with no impulse to reciprocate is certainly consistent with Obama’s consummate narcissism. Sinclair has made capacious efforts to get his story out and his narrative has been unchanging. It would seem the sole witness who could corroborate the limo story would be the missing Multani.There is a plethora of grounds on which to discount Sinclair’s chronicle of events. As a witness, he would be facilely impeached. But he is manifestly more frank about his life story than Obama has been. As with the birth certificate matter, Obama’s lack of candor cannot but lead to supposition.

If Obama habitually enjoyed these sorts of trysts, we would presume others witnesses would surface. To date, no one else has gone public with comparable reports. Maybe the late Donald Young, choir director at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago could have confirmed that Obama didn’t indulge in this type of conduct. Sadly, Young was murdered on December 23, 2007. The forty-seven-year old choirmaster had attended Obama’s church since the age of twelve.Obama has confessed to using illegal drugs his younger days (Dreams, Pg. 93). Much of Dreams is unadulterated fabrication, thus, we have no way of knowing how profligate Obama’s drug abuse was, nor has he released his medical records. John McCain made public more than a thousand pages of medical records during the 2008 campaign. Obama produced a letter from his physician pronouncing the candidate in excellent health.Doctors routinely query their patients about the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs, both legal and otherwise. They customarily infer that their patients are under-reporting.Non-Obamanutz should find Sinclair’s book a worthy read.Though I could have lived without yet another detailed description of a president’s private parts.Nature abhors a vacuum. The dearth of fundamental details about most of Obama’s life, leads to supposition.Some of it will be cogent, some of it outlandish. Alternatively, Obama could simply liberate his records and show us who he really is.

Well, Sinclair is in Washington DC for interviews, to find out why the DNC has ignored him and some associated with the DNC have attacked him, and to visit the FBI in regard to death threats he has received. Sinclair is persistent and sincere in his crusade to reveal the truth about Obama.When I first began evaluating Sinclair’s claims, I went to the Official Illinois Senate records for November 1999. Sinclair was in Chicago from November 3 to November 8, 1999. Obama was absent from the Senate on November 4, 1999. The Senate did not reconvene until November 16, 1999. It turns out that Obama was at least in Chicago by November 8, 1999. Obama was at Northwestern Law School for a speech on November 8. That puts Obama and Sinclair in Chicago at the same time.Still not convinced? Several months ago I discovered that a former Chicago restaurant owner and chef heard persistent rumors from the gay community that Obama was on the down low. I am in regular contact with this person, who happens to be very intelligent and articulate.

Still not convinced? Reverend James Manning stated in a video and 2 interviews that Obama and Jeremiah Wright are closet homosexuals. He claims to have solid proof. Reverend Manning has stated that his further announcement and proof will be forthcoming soon.Larry Sinclair has contacted many major players in the MSM and has offered to answer any questions. Sinclair will be interviewed tonight by Jeff Rense and there is reason to believe he will be interviewed by a network soon.Many in the public have only made a cursory examination of the claim by Sinclair and have dismissed the allegations after reading the many attempts at discrediting him. There has been a mass effort to discredit Larry Sinclair. If you are in the MSM, you had better wake up.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 shook Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan and its vicinity, including the Tokyo metropolitan area, early Tuesday morning, with no immediate reports of major damage or serious injuries. Some minor tsunami tidal waves were observed in the prefecture following the 5:07 a.m. quake, which originated about 20 kilometers under the surface of the sea in Suruga Bay, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Two nuclear reactors at the Hamaoka nuclear plant in Omaezaki, Shizuoka, were suspended automatically, but there was no radioactive leakage. As of 6:30 a.m., no deaths or serious injuries had been reported, according to the National Police Agency. Prime Minister Taro Aso instructed members of a task force set up at the prime minister's office to collect information on the quake, while Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura told reporters the quake does not seem to be related to a massive quake that is feared to hit the Tokai region of central Japan in the future -- the so-called Tokai quake.Local police in Shizuoka said they have received reports about landslides, slight injuries, a fire and a rockfall, while some people were brought to hospitals in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. The quake measured lower 6 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 at several points in Shizuoka, including Izu, Yaizu, Omaezaki and Makinohara, according to the agency. Central Japan Railway Co. has suspended operations of Shinkansen bullet trains and local trains in Shizuoka and parts of Nagano Prefecture, and some parts of the Tomei Expressway have been closed. The surface of the road was lifted up at the Kikugawa interchange on the expressway in Shizuoka Prefecture, according to the local police.In Omaezaki, water pipes burst at several points and water supplies have been cut off, according to the municipal government.The quake came after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 jolted Tokyo and wide areas of eastern Japan on Sunday.

Washington - An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale struck in the Indian Ocean, prompting the US government to issue a tsunami warning Monday for South and Southeast Asia. The earthquake was centred about 262 kilometres north of India's Andaman Islands and took place at 1956 GMT, the US Geological Survey in Denver, Colorado, reported. It struck in the early Tuesday morning hours local time. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii issued a tsunami watch for Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Myanmar and Thailand, saying the earthquake was strong enough to produce a tsunami along coastlines within 1,000 kilometres of its epicentre.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) —President Barack Obama's first North American summit is proving it's a lot easier to agree on battling a killer flu virus than to untangle knotty disputes over cross-border trade.Obama flew into Mexico's second-largest city late Sunday for a two-day speed summit with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper — a meeting whose main accomplishment will likely be a joint plan of attack for swine flu.But there was little chance of any breakthrough in long-running squabbles over Mexican trucks, or U.S. Buy American rules or how best to curb the deadly flow of drugs across the frontier.The so called Three Amigos summit began over dinner at an ornate cultural center here and was to conclude a mere 17 hours later at a joint news conference.In April, when Obama visited Mexico City, the first swine flu cases were just surfacing. Now, it's a global epidemic that's sickened more than 43,000 people in the United States and is blamed for 300 deaths. The toll in Mexico is at least 15,000 cases and 141 deaths; in Canada it's 10,000 cases and 50 deaths.While the H1N1 virus is in a summer lull in the Northern Hemisphere, it's expected to roar back in the fall. Public health officials are readying medicines and public education campaigns, hoping to curb the flu without disrupting vital cross-border trade and tourism.

We're going to do everything possible to minimize the impact,said John Brennan, Obama's top White House adviser on homeland security. There is going to be a joint statement on how the three countries ... tackle the H1N1 challenge.On other subjects, the summit was more a chance to catch up than make progress.Started by George W. Bush in 2005 near his Texas ranch, the North American Leaders Summit has become an annual showcase on trade. Canada is the top U.S. trading partner, while Mexico is number three.This year, as the U.S. economy struggles out of a crippling recession, the leaders met at the Institutos Cabanas, a 19th-century home for poor children that's now a sprawling art museum with 23 arched courtyards filled with grapefruit and mango trees.Streets around the complex were sealed off by heavily armed federal agents and police in riot gear.The security stemmed in part from the drug wars that have raged in Mexico since Calderon deployed the army to crush the country's notorious cartels. Some 11,000 people have perished in the conflict.In a separate meeting with Calderon, Obama voiced strong support of the offensive, but Calderon expressed concerns about delays in the latest installment of U.S. aid under the $1.4 billion Merida Initiative, a U.S. official reported. The money's been held up by allegations of human rights violations.Calderon also pressed Obama on allowing Mexican trucks access to U.S. highways, said the official, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity to describe the private talk. Mexicans are convinced the U.S. limits are less about safety — their stated reason — than protecting American hauling companies from competition under the NAFTA free trade accord.Also unlikely to be resolved at the summit were objections from both north and south of the border about the Buy American provisions in Obama's stimulus plan.And immigration remained a sore spot. You can't have it both ways,Obama said.We have been very clear in our belief that President Zelaya was removed from office illegally, that it was a coup, and that he should return,Obama said.The United Nations and Organization of American States, including the United States, have called for Zelaya's return, but more than one month later, the interim government of Roberto Micheletti remains firm and talks between the two sides have so far been unsuccessful.Harper agreed with Obama's stance.The United States has very clearly stated its position while letting a multilateral process take the lead, he said.That's precisely what we want to see from the United States,Harper said.Turning to trade, Obama said a Buy American provision in his economic stimulus plan had little effect so far on the multibillion-dollar trade partnership with Canada.Obama told journalists that Harper has raised the issue every time they have met.Harper has complained the Buy American provision is protectionist and could harm trade relations between the closely linked North American economies.This in no way this has endangered the billions of dollars of trade taking place between our two countries, Obama said, standing beside Harper and Calderon at a final news conference.

It also stipulated that the measure would not override existing U.S. trade treaties such as the North American Free Trade Agreement.Obama also talked about comparisons between the U.S. and Canadian health care systems, saying Canada's government-run health care model won't work in the United States. PRESIDENT CALDERĂ“N: (As translated.) Ladies and gentlemen, representatives of the media, national as well as international. The leaders from the United States, Canada and Mexico have completed two fruitful workdays for the benefit for our co-nationals. The leaders for North America share the vision and insight for the regional community that is safe, secure, and competitive, that can face successfully the challenges of the present and the future.We coincide in pointing out that in an age marked by globalization, the challenges can only be overcome jointly -- thus the importance of keeping the dialogue, trust and cooperation amongst our three countries. Americans, Canadians, and Mexicans have reiterated that the values upon which our societies are founded are democracy, freedom, justice, and respect of human rights.Our three nations have reiterated our decision to combat in the struggle of the transnational organized crime in order to bring about more security to our communities. The struggles we have led in Mexico for the rule of law and the security of our Mexican people forces us to stop the traffic of weapons and of money that go from north to south that strengthen and nourish organized crime gangs. The notion of responsibility, co-responsibility, accountability, the exchange of information, and the building of our institutions should be the guidelines for our cooperation.

In this international crisis context, the three states that make up the North American region have to take the leadership and foster and boost the necessary measures to recover our economic growth. In our task we have had to implement countercyclical measures in the three countries that have been put into action. And in a coordinated manner we can stabilize our economies and bring about trustworthiness and certainty in regard to the future of the global economy.It is also necessary to build our financial international institutions such as the World Fund, the International Monetary Fund, which are fundamental to guarantee the flow of the financial resources. In the case of Latin America, the support that will enable us to recapitalize the Inter-American Bank for Development will be the best action for help and commitment in regard to the poor countries in the region on behalf of the North American countries.I am certain that at the next G20 meeting that shall take place in Pittsburgh, United States, will be a great opportunity to build the necessary agreements to reform these organizations that are key in the recovery of our economies and our reprisal. I thank President Obama for fostering this meeting in Pittsburgh.And likewise, the United States, Mexico and Canada have tools to restart our agreements. We recognize that it is essential to abide by NAFTA and to resolve the pending topics that impede us to reach greater regional competitiveness. And it is important to see how we are going to fulfill our commitments in regard to the environment and in regard to our labor domains linked to the commercial agreements, the trade agreements we have amongst our countries. I am convinced that only in tapping the advantages offered by our economic complementary -- (inaudible) -- in terms of interest -- labor, technology, and natural resources -- we shall be successful in a world that is ferociously competing.

At this summit we have reached important agreements such as boosting the standardization of the regulations and certifications of our products, as well as the sanitary procedures and -- fight for sanitary procedures that can be simplified, as well as increasing without any losses, increasing the economic competitiveness of our region. The objective is to have secure and efficient conditions. These procedures to be implemented with no bureaucratic or far-fetched red tape in our offices. And this will diminish, decrease the prices for the staples and food, and improve the competitiveness of our economies.On the other hand, on the bilateral aspect, Mexico and the United States will launch modernization initiatives at our common borders with determined terms in order to promote the regional competitiveness actions. And Mexico commends and is pleased to say that we're going to inaugurate the first international bridge that is currently being built after so many years between the United States and Mexico.The United States, Mexico and Canada have coincided in the importance to face the repercussions of pragmatic change. The cost is very high but the price we shall pay for lack of action is not to be calculated -- cannot possibly be calculated. We coincide that we have to foster the global agreement in Copenhagen and the instrumentation for a green fund that will finance and support mitigation and adaptation actions in regard to the global -- (inaudible) -- of climatic change. We need to make progress in regard to clean energies and technologies as well as the development of our carbon market in order to have a regional market.North America has to be recognized as a responsible region and must set the example for the world in terms of environmental cooperation amongst countries with different levels of development.Cooperation and solidarity amongst the North American region has to prevail at all moments, and thus it was demonstrated last April when our three countries faced the emergence of this new virus, H1N1. And working together, we showed our highest expressions of responsibility, accountability and transparency. And because we alerted timely the other regions in the hemisphere, they had the opportunity to implement preventive measures in order to abate the propagation of the virus and to avoid as far as possible its lethal repercussions.H1N1, as we know, will be back this winter. We are getting prepared, all three countries, to face in a responsible manner this contingency and abate its impact for our people.First Minister, Mr. President, ladies and gentlemen, at this summit the representatives of the United States, Canada, and Mexico have held an open and straightforward dialogue as countries that share values, that were to consolidate the right conditions for development and that have been able to found a successful society based on brotherly and responsible relationships. We believe in a North American region that is united, that is prosperous and wealthy, that is able to build a better future for the forthcoming generations.And I want to give the floor now to Mr. Stephen Harper, Prime Minister for Canada.

PRIME MINISTER HARPER: (As translated.) Thank you, President CalderĂłn. Thank you to the Mexican people for their hospitality, for their warmth. And thank you to President Obama for your straightforward exchanges -- so positive on our priorities. These -- (inaudible) -- consisted mainly of the economy, health, and security in the North American region, and focused on energy, environment, and climate change in regard to the North American economy and the global economy.And thanks to the solid results in Canada with regard to financial regulations and fiscal actions -- have been very positive contribution. It's been important that since we are getting close to the G20 meeting, we have to underscore that countries have to go on with the reinforcement of their financial national/international institutions and to take the timely financial measures and to keep the markets open and to resist against protectionism.In regard to the health domain and in regard to the influenza H1N1, it has been a threat, but the excellent cooperation amongst our three countries has helped to restrain the repercussions of this outbreak and we shall focus on that even more.In regard to security, Canada recognizes the courageous commitment taken by President CalderĂłn to combat organized crime in Mexico. We commend him for his efforts and his actions have touched all of us.And we are still making the greatest efforts in Canada to find a pacific resolution for Honduras. We have to restate the democratic government and the rule of law in that country.In regard to the energy and climate change, and since our economies are integrated, we have discussed about the importance of working together on a North American focus against climate change and in order to assure and guarantee a new international covenant that is efficient and truly global.And to finish, Canada, the United States and Mexico are good neighbors and good friends, too. As sovereign countries in a modern world, we are independent and interdependent both, and I can't wait to see you at the G20 and to welcome you at the summit in Canada for the Leaders of North America next year.(The Prime Minister repeats his remarks in English.) Given the integrated nature of our economies, we did talk at some length about the importance of working together on a North American approach to climate change, and also on doing our best to ensure that out of Copenhagen and going forward we reach an effective and genuinely international new world protocol on greenhouse gas emissions.To conclude, Canada, the United States and Mexico are good neighbors and also good friends. And I want to thank the people of Guadalajara and Mexico for the incredible warmth they've shown us on this, my second trip to Mexico as President.Here in Mexico, the word is juntos. And in Canada it's ensemble.But no matter how you say it, we come here today --three nations, one continent -- because of the challenges and opportunities that we will be facing together.Like our magnificent surroundings today, this city could not be a more fitting venue. Here in Guadalajara we see all the richness of Mexico's heritage -- its arts, its architecture, its vitality and its culture. And we also see all the possibilities of Mexico's future -- the innovation, high-tech industries and entrepreneurship that makes this one of our hemisphere's most dynamic cities.Here in Guadalajara we also see our continent coming together -- Mexicans, Canadians, Americans -- as tourists, as neighbors, educators and business partners; each bringing their unique traditions; each bound by mutual respect. Indeed, in the 21st century, North America is defined not simply by our borders, but by our bonds. And that is the spirit that defined the very productive summit that we had here today.

First, we agreed that we had to work together to restore our common prosperity. The global recession has cost jobs and hurt families from Toronto to Toledo to Tijuana. So we renew our commitment to work together in Ottawa, Washington and Mexico City. Building on our progress at the G8 and G20 summits, we agreed to continue to take aggressive, coordinated action to restore economic growth and create jobs for our workers, including workers in the North American auto industry.Because so much of our common prosperity and millions of jobs depend on trade that flows across our borders -- billions of dollars worth of trade every day -- we reaffirmed the need to reject protectionism. We recommitted ourselves to the infrastructure investments, the common-sense regulations and intellectual property protections upon which trade thrives. We are among each other's largest trading partners. As we work together towards lasting prosperity, we need to expand that trade, not restrict it.I would note that our common prosperity also depends on orderly, legal migration. All three of our nations have been enriched by our ties of family and community. I think of my own brother-in law who's Canadian. I think of the many Mexican Americans from Jalisco who found a home in Los Angeles and Texas and in my hometown of Chicago. At the same time, Americans, Mexicans and Canadians all expect their borders to be safe and secure. And that is why my administration will continue to work to fix America's broken immigration system in a way that is in keeping with our traditions of being both a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants.And because our future prosperity also depends on clean energy economies, we built on our bilateral efforts to invest in renewable energy and green jobs, and we recommitted ourselves to the historic goals announced last month in Italy. Nations like the United States and Canada will take the lead by reducing emissions by 80 percent by 2050, and we will work with other nations to cut global emissions in half. Indeed, we made progress toward the concrete goals that will be negotiated at the Copenhagen climate change summit in December. And I again want to commend Mexico for its leadership in curbing greenhouse gas emissions and President CalderĂłn for his innovative proposals to help developing countries build clean, sustainable economies.Second, we reiterated our abiding commitment to the common safety and security of our people. In response to the H1N1 pandemic, our three governments have worked closely, collaboratively and responsibly. With science as our guide, we resolved to continue taking all necessary preparations and precautions to prepare for the upcoming flu season and protect the health of our people. And this challenge transcends borders and so must our response.We also resolved to continue confronting the urgent threat to our common security from the drug cartels that are causing so much violence and death in our countries. As I've said on many occasions, I heartily commend President CalderĂłn and his government for their determination and courage in taking on these cartels. And the President reaffirmed his government's commitment to transparency, accountability and human rights as they wage this difficult but necessary fight.The United States will remain a full partner in this effort. We will work to make sure Mexico has the support it needs to dismantle and defeat the cartels. And the United States will also meet its responsibilities by continuing our efforts to reduce the demand for drugs and continuing to strengthening the security of our shared border -- not only to protect the American people, but to stem the illegal southbound flow of American guns and cash that helps fuel this extraordinary violence.

Third, we reaffirmed our abiding commitment to our common values, including peace, democracy and human rights. And in particular, we discussed the coup in Honduras. As has been mentioned, our three nations stand united on this issue. President Zelaya remains the democratically elected president. For the sake of the Honduran people, democratic and constitutional order must be restored. And we will continue to work with others, especially the Organization of American States, to achieve a negotiated and peaceful solution.And finally, we pledged to continue all these efforts. I look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Harper to Washington in September. I look forward to welcoming both my friends at the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh, where I hope to reciprocate President CalderĂłn's hospitality.Our progress today is a reminder that no nation can meet the challenges of our time on our own. Our common aspirations can only be achieved if we work together. And that's what the nearly half-billion people in North America expect from us, so that's what we will do.

PRESIDENT CALDERĂ“N: (As translated.) Let's move on to the question-and-answer session. This will be one question per country, and we'll start off with Mexico.

Q Good afternoon. President Obama, there are certain questions about violation of human rights here in Mexico and all these problems fighting drug trafficking. Are you going to certify Mexico? And how can we move forward with the Merida Initiative? We've also been concerned about any attempt against Felipe CalderĂłn's life. We know about certain threats and insecurity that prevails. This of course is certainly related to your country. We're concerned about the visa problem, too. What comments would you have regarding all these questions?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: I didn't get a translation on that one. (Laughter.) So it sounded like a very good question. (Laughter.) Here, I think it's coming. Go ahead.

Q We're concerned about the violation of human rights here in Mexico as we fight against drug trafficking. What are your concerns regarding this? And we'd also like to know if Mexico is going to be certified, and if you will help and apply resources for the Merida Initiative? We've also heard about some attempts against the life of President Felipe Hinojosa CalderĂłn. Do you have any knowledge of this? And we're also concerned about national security, we're concerned about visas, et cetera. We'd like to know, is there any possibility that you might turn this around, that we might not have any limit on visas?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, I'll just address the first two questions that seem to apply to the United States. Number one, we have been very supportive of the Merida Initiative and we will continue to be supportive. And we have already seen resources transferred, equipment transferred, in order to help President CalderĂłn in what is a very courageous effort to deal with a drug cartel -- set of drug cartels that are not only resulting in extraordinary violence to the people of Mexico, but are also undermining institutions like the police and the judiciary system that, unless stopped, will be very damaging to the country.Now, with respect to the conduct of this battle against the cartels, I have great confidence in President CalderĂłn's administration applying the law enforcement techniques that are necessary to curb the power of the cartels, but doing so in a way that's consistent with human rights. And we discussed this in our bilateral meeting and I am confident that as the national police are trained, as the coordination between the military and local police officials is improved, there is going to be increased transparency and accountability and that human rights will be observed.The biggest, by far, violators of human rights right now are the cartels themselves that are kidnapping people and extorting people and encouraging corruption in these regions. That's what needs to be stopped. That's what President CalderĂłn is committed to doing, and that's what I'm committed to helping President CalderĂłn accomplish as long as he is President of Mexico.

PRIME MINISTER HARPER: On the question of visas, it's important to understand the imposition of visa is due to one thing and one thing only, and that is the dramatic rise we have seen over the last few years, and this year in particular, in the number of bogus refugee claims being made from Mexico into Canada.It's important to understand that this decision, first of all, has nothing to do with the actions of the Mexican government. The Mexican government has cooperated with us in efforts to stem this particular problem, to limit this particular problem. It continues to work with us in ways we might reverse it.But the underlying problem, as I said to President CalderĂłn and others, the underlying program -- problem is in the Canadian refugee laws. It is simply far too easy in Canada to make a bogus refugee claim as a way of entering the country. And we have to change that. It is unfair to those who are legitimate refugees. It is also unfair to the hundreds of thousands of people who are working through our immigration system to become immigrants to this country -- to our country.So as I say, we will continue to work with Mexican authorities to try and limit this problem. But in the absence of legislative change, it is very difficult for our governments to control this other than through the imposition of visa. It is the only tool available to us right now. So we need additional tools from our parliament to stem the flow of bogus refugee claimants and also to have additional tools to deal with this kind of problem.

PRESIDENT CALDERĂ“N: (As translated.) Let me address these three topics, which are very important to us. First of all, my government has absolute categorical commitment with human rights. The struggle, the battle, the fight against organized crime is precisely to preserve the human rights of the Mexican people -- right to safety; to security; to personal safety and integrity; and the right to have a safe family; the right to work without being really molested or disturbed -- the struggle for the security and safety of the Mexican people.Obviously we have a strong commitment to protect human rights of everybody, the victims and even of the criminals themselves. And this is how it has been, this is how it will continue to be, and this is how the federal police will act, the attorney generals and armed forces will act. In all of these cases, there has been a very scrupulous effort to try to protect human rights in all cases.And anyone who says the contrary certainly would have to prove this -- any case, just one case, where the proper authority has not acted in a correct way, that the competent authorities have not punished anyone who has abused their authority, whether they be police officers, whether they be soldiers, or anyone else. We have a clear commitment with human rights. We have met this commitment, and we will continue to do so -- not because of any money that might come or come through the Merida Initiative or what's said in the Congress; because we have the strong commitment to human rights. And I certainly in a personal sense for several decades now, I have always had this commitment.I have some details about what you have pointed out, but in any case, it certainly won't be the first or the last occasion on which we might hear something about an attempt against my personal -- about my life, my person. But once again, the governments can't stop -- (inaudible) -- we know that we are destroying their criminal organizations. We're hitting them hard. We're hitting at the heart of their organizations. We're making them back away. And they know that we're not only taking an initiative in the struggle against crime, but we are actually being able to protect and defend our country better as time goes by.

This is not a type of vengeance of getting back at anyone, but we want to make sure that Mexico is a safe place to live in, that we will be able to move forward in this. We're not just talking about this organization, but whether our basic objective is to provide security, safety for the Mexican people. This is something that Mexican people are entitled to; that their families and their children can go out into the streets, they can go out to play, they can go to school, they can make progress and to fulfill their aspirations; that Mexico be a free country, free of delinquency, free of violence; that Mexico will be a safe country. And in the struggle we're not going to be intimidated, nor are they going to put a stop to our efforts.Once again, I certainly hope that Mexico's society recognizes all of the efforts we're making along these lines -- the police force who have been victims of attempts and of cowardly acts by the criminals; all the efforts carried out by Mexican marines, by soldiers, and the different attorney generals, all of this, because we are committed to this ideal to have a safe Mexico, to have a safe country. And these are values that we believe in, and it's certainly stronger than any threat that could be made against us about any type whatsoever.So once again, we have had dialogues with Prime Minister Harper on several different occasions as we did on this occasion at the summit on the matter of visas for Mexican visitors. We've talked openly, frankly, and certainly Mexico, certainly, feels very bad about this decision, about this rejection, even though, of course, it is a privilege of the Canadian government to stipulate this. But it certainly gets in the way of a good relationship, of what Prime Minister Harper and I are doing to have good relations between our two countries. And the explanations that Prime Harper has mentioned, there certainly is a problem with bogus refugee claim problem, and this has led to an abuse of the system.

So we're going to try to work together to collaborate together. We're doing this here in Mexico to try to do away with the underlying causes of this abuse regarding the general system for receiving refugees in Canada.Once again, for me it's very clear that as the President of Mexico, that I certainly have the obligation of ensuring that a specific topic on the bilateral agenda not deter reaching our full potential of other matters on the agenda.And once again, here lies the great opportunity in this particular area of economic complementarities of the three countries' economies, and that this will take our whole region up to a higher state of competitiveness to the benefit of our people. These are the lines we've been working along, and I think we have been making great strides in this sense, and we certainly will continue to work along these lines in a frank and open way with Prime Minister Harper and President Obama.

Q Let me preface this by saying we only get one question each, so I will proceed to be longwinded. (Laughter.) It's actually a two-parter. And the first part is a question for the three leaders, primarily President Obama. And I'd appreciate it --

PRESIDENT CALDERĂ“N: Could you use the microphone?

Q And I would appreciate it if the Prime Minister, for the benefit of my Francophone colleagues, could answer in French, as well.

The Buy American caused considerable concern outside the United States. I am wondering what you discussed about "Buy American" at this meeting, and also what power you personally have to rescind this measure, and whether you intend to use that power.Now, on a not completely related topic, health care has been an issue of tremendous debate in your country, and Canadians have looked on with some fascination as our health care system has become a political football in your country. I'd like to ask Prime Minister Harper and President Obama whether there are elements of the Canadian health care system, particularly the public model, which are worth emulating.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, first of all, with respect to the "Buy American" provisions, I want to assure you that your Prime Minister raises this with me every time we see each other. So that's important to note, that he is expressing I think his country's concerns.

I think it's also important to keep it in perspective that, in fact, we have not seen some sweeping steps toward protectionism. There was a very particular provision that was in our recovery package, our stimulus package. It did not extend beyond that. It was WTO-compliant. It was not something that I thought was necessary, but it was introduced at a time when we had a very severe economic situation and it was important for us to act quickly and not get bogged down in debates around this particular provision.Prime Minister Harper and I have discussed this and there may be mechanisms whereby states and local jurisdictions can work with the provinces to allow for cross-border procurement practices that expand the trading relationship. But I do think it's important to keep this in perspective. This in no way has endangered the billions of dollars of trade taking place between our two countries. It's not a general provision, but it was restricted to a very particular aspect of our recovery package.With respect to the health care debate, we are having a vigorous debate in the United States and I think that's a healthy thing. The reason it's necessary is because we are on a currently unsustainable path. We spend far more per person on health care than any nation on Earth. Our outcomes in terms of various measures of well-being don't rank us at the top. We're not doing better than a lot of other advanced developed countries that are spending much less per person.Individual families are being bankrupted because of the lack of insurance. We've got 46-47 million people without health insurance in our country. And for those who do have health insurance, they are always at risk of private insurers eliminating their insurance because of a preexisting condition or because they lose a job or they have changed jobs.So the final aspect of it is, is that our health care inflation is going up so rapidly that our federal budget simply can't sustain it -- nor can businesses that are increasingly having to make decisions whether they hire more workers or eliminate health care; whether they stop providing coverage or they force more costs on to their workers. So the whole system is not working well.

Now, how do we change it? When it's one-sixth of the U.S. economy, there are going to be a lot of opinions. And Congress has moved forward and we are closer to achieving a serious health reform package than we have been in the last 40 to 50 years. But there is going to continue to be a vigorous debate.I've said that the Canadian model works for Canada; it would not work for the United States -- in part simply because we've evolved differently. We have a employer-based system and a private-based health care system that stands side by side with Medicare and Medicaid and our Veterans Administration health care system. And so we've got to develop a uniquely American approach to this problem.This, by the way, is a problem that all countries are going to have to deal with at some level because if medical inflation continues at the pace that it's going, everybody's budgets are going to be put under severe strain.And so what we're trying to do is make sure that we've got a sensible plan that provides coverage for everybody; that continues the role of the private marketplace, but provides people who don't have health insurance or have fallen through the cracks in the private marketplace a realistic and meaningful option. And we've got to do it in a way that also changes our delivery system so that we're not engaged in the kind of wasteful, inefficient medical spending that is so costly to us.So I suspect that we're going to have continued vigorous debate. I suspect that you Canadians will continue to get dragged in by those who oppose reform, even though I've said nothing about Canadian health care reform. I don't find Canadians particularly scary, but I guess some of the opponents of reform think that they make a good boogeyman. I think that's a mistake. And I suspect that once we get into the fall and people look at the actual legislation that's being proposed, that more sensible and reasoned arguments will emerge, and we're going to get this passed.

Sorry to take so long on the question.

PRIME MINISTER HARPER: (As translated.) With respect to your first question, yesterday we discussed this problem. I'm very happy to recently see that it's an agreement among the provinces and the federation to have a common front with respect to this problem. There have been a lot of discussions among American and Canadian ministers, ministers of trade, and also our public officials. These talks will continue once I meet again with President Obama over the next couple of months.With respect to health care, the only thing I could say is the Canadians certainly support their own system, and the rest is really an American debate.And it's up to the provinces, for example, in Canada -- this whole thing about "Buy American", we had quite a bit of discussion on this, as President Obama has already mentioned, and I'm very glad to see that our provinces and the federal government have reached a recent agreement on this concern.And once again, all of the cross-border procurement process is interesting. I think when our trade ministers have gotten together -- the ministers are talking about this as well -- and President Obama and I will discuss this topic at future meetings.With respect to the debate on health care in the United States, as you well know, we as Canadians support our own system, but with respect to the rest of the question this is up to United States and once again we do have certain jurisdiction in the provinces.Ginger.

Q To President Obama, given the fight that you're having to wage for health care, I wonder if you can tell us what you think the prospects are for immigration reform, for comprehensive immigration reform, which you've said is your goal; and whether you think that the blows you're taking now on health care and that the Democrats are likely to take around the midterm elections will make it hard, if not impossible, to achieve comprehensive immigration reform in this term -- and what you've told President CalderĂłn about that?

President CalderĂłn, I'd like to hear a little bit about your thoughts on Honduras. There have been some in Latin America who have said that the United States has not acted strongly enough to return President Zelaya to power. And I wonder if you could talk a little bit about how you feel about what the United States should be doing or could be doing to restore democratic order in Honduras.And, Prime Minister Harper, a few months ago the Homeland Security Secretary of the United States went to Canada -- or at least aggravated Canadian sensibilities when she compared the Canadian border to the Mexican border. And I wonder what you think about that and how you feel about the United States using some of the enforcement strategies adopted on the southern border in the north. Thank you.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: That's all? (Laughter.)

Q That's all, Mr. President.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, first of all, Ginger, I don't know if you're doing some prognosticating about the outcome of the midterm elections, which are over a year away. I anticipate we'll do just fine. And I think when all is said on health care reform, the American people are going to be glad that we acted to change an unsustainable system so that more people have coverage, we're bending the cost curve, and we're getting insurance reforms so that people don't get dropped because of preexisting conditions or other issues.So understand, though, I'm not acting based on short-term political calculations. I'm looking at what's best for the country long term. If I had been making short-term political calculations, I wouldn't be standing here as President, because nobody calculated that I could win the presidency.With respect to immigration reform, I continue to believe that is also in the long-term interests of the United States. We have a broken immigration system. Nobody denies it. And if we continue on a path we're on, we will continue to have tensions with our Mexican neighbors; we will continue to have people crossing the borders in a way that is dangerous for them, unfair for those who are applying legally to immigrate; we're going to continue to have employers who are exploiting workers because they're not within a legal system, and so oftentimes are receiving less than minimum wage, or don't have overtime, or being abused in other fashion. That's going to depress U.S. wages. It's causing ongoing tensions inside the United States. It's not fair and it's not right, and we're going to change it.Now, I've got a lot on my plate, and it's very important for us to sequence these big initiatives in a way where they don't all just crash at the same time. And what we've said is in the fall when we come back, we're going to complete health care reform. We still have to act on energy legislation that has passed the House, but the Senate, I'm sure, is going to have its own ideas about how it wants to approach it. We still have financial regulatory reform that has to get done because we don't want a situation in which irresponsible actions in the global financial markets can precipitate another crisis. That's a pretty big stack of bills.Fortunately, what we've been able to do is to begin meeting with both Democrats and Republicans from the House and the Senate. Secretary Napolitano is coordinating these discussions, and I would anticipate that before the year is out we will have draft legislation along with sponsors potentially in the House and the Senate who are ready to move this forward, and when we come back next year, that we should be in a position to start acting.

Now, am I going to be able to snap my fingers and get this done? No. This is going to be difficult; it's going to require bipartisan cooperation. There are going to be demagogues out there who try to suggest that any form of pathway for legalization for those who are already in the United States is unacceptable. And those are fights that I'd have to have if my poll numbers are at 70 or if my poll numbers are at 40. That's just the nature of the U.S. immigration debate.But ultimately, I think the American people want fairness. And we can create a system in which you have strong border security, we have an orderly process for people to come in, but we're also giving an opportunity for those who are already in the United States to be able to achieve a pathway to citizenship so that they don't have to live in the shadows, and their children and their grandchildren can have a full participation in the United States. So I'm confident we can get it done.Oh, excuse me -- I know this wasn't directed at me, but I just want to make one quick point on Honduras, because you repeated something that I've heard before. The same critics who say that the United States has not intervened enough in Honduras are the same people who say that we're always intervening, and the Yankees need to get out of Latin America. You can't have it both ways.We have been very clear in our belief that President Zelaya was removed from office illegally, that it was a coup, and that he should return. We have cooperated with all the international bodies in sending that message. Now, if these critics think that it's appropriate for us to suddenly act in ways that in every other context they consider inappropriate, then I think what that indicates is, is that maybe there's some hypocrisy involved in their approach to U.S.-Latin America relations that certainly is not going to guide my administration policies.

PRESIDENT CALDERĂ“N: (As translated.) Thank you. I will now make the most of this question. Now, in regard to migration, actually many of the people who work in the United States, who live in the shadow, live in the state or come from Jalisco, the state. These are people who have migrated in order to build a better future for their families. All of them, or most of them, have enormously contributed to the American society and the American economy, and it is unthinkable to see that the U.S., the main power, the main economic power in the world, without the contribution of the Mexican laborers and workers. This is not only a goodwill statement.And during our meeting, we handed the delegations the benefits of North America and what the Mexican population represents in terms of age in regards to the total population in the U.S. The only way to have sustained progress throughout the North American region, especially, is allowing for the natural economic processes, for integration can happen, and this implies a labor mobility that cannot be determined by mandate or by decree.This is what we have underscored with President Obama during this meeting, to keep on invoking the protection for the Mexican laborers, whatever their migration conditions are in the United States. And our highest commendment to the way President Obama has tackled this migration issue now.Now, aside from defending the rights of the Mexican laborers in the United States, that one day instead of the Mexican people to have to leave their country because they're hungry or because they have to live their lives, we need an economic scheme where we have great investments coming from the U.S., hailing from Canada, and opening here the labor opportunities that the Mexicans so need.I think President Barack Obama has responded to the topic on -- or to the issue on Honduras -- what we have discussed and agreed as what needs to be done to build the international actions that have been taken in order to reestablish democracy in Honduras; to strengthen the OAS and the delegation that is about to meet in Tegucigalpa -- to build the mediation actions that Oscar Arias, President for Costa Rica and Peace Nobel Prize, is carrying out in order to reestablish the constitutional law in Honduras.This is not about a person or another. This is not about President Zelaya himself, or per se. It is about the constitutional and democratic life that ought to be defended in regard to the international legal framework that we have all agreed upon.And once more, I coincide in the contradiction highlighted by President Obama -- those who have rejected or who have argued about the intervention of the United States in the region are those who now are claiming for the determination or the intervention of the U.S. in the region, no matter how legal this action might be.So we have to resort to international law and international instances beyond the intervention of one single state -- or even more, the intervention of one single person -- to resolve such a dispute and such an issue. This is the path to be taken.

Today we congratulate ourselves that President Obama is leading the administration of the United States. But in the past that happened, but in the future we don't know who might be President next. And I am not of those who share the idea that the U.S. elected as the ultimate judge. And the ultimate resolve is through the intermediation of the affairs in our countries.Yes, we have to open the path to the OAS, to the international organizations, to the regional group that we have formed, such as the Rio Group, such as the groups that are friends of North America, the countries that befriend Honduras, that befriend Central America, that befriend Guatemala. These countries must act on our own accounts, but in observance of the international law and the rules we have settled ourselves. We have to form a group of friends of Honduras that through -- with the help of Oscar Arias and with the help of the OAS and their corresponding actiona.

PRIME MINISTER HARPER: Just briefly, Minister Van Loan and Secretary Napolitano have been -- and our officials have been meeting regularly on management of our shared border. I think we have a good, cooperative relationship in that regard. There's obviously always work to be done.Let me be very clear: From the Canadian perspective, we look at our border as a line between the two closest countries on Earth. We have the largest trading relationship of any two countries on Earth, but we also share security concerns. I've said repeatedly, I say again, there is no such thing as a threat to the security of the United States which is not a threat to the security of Canada. That is why Canada has been a steadfast ally of the United States in NAFTA and NORAD for many, many years.We want to address all the same security issues that the United States wants to address, and we want to do so in a way that doesn't impede commerce and doesn't impede the great social interaction which has made our two countries so close over the decades.I'm just going to also weigh in a little bit, as a friend of the United States, on a question that was posed to President Obama. If I were an American, I would be really fed up with this kind of hypocrisy -- you know, the United States is accused of meddling except when it's accused of not meddling, and the same types of -- same types who are demanding the United States to somehow intervene in Honduras, the same type of people who would condemn longstanding security cooperation between Colombia and the United States, which is being done for legitimate security and drug traffic reasons that is, frankly -- that are in the interests of all the countries of this hemisphere.Mexico and Canada are involved in the mediation effort in supporting -- directly supporting the mediation effort of President Arias. I think the United States has been a -- very, very forcefully, articulated its concerns and its desired outcomes in that regard, and has been very supportive of those of us who are working in the multilateral process to deal with this serious issue in the hemisphere. So I think that's precisely what we want to see from the United States, is a United States that leads on issues of values, but is very supportive of multilateral attempts to deal with challenges that we all face.

THE RAPTURE WILL HAPPEN FOR SKEPTICS

DANIEL 9:26-27

27 And he( THE ROMAN,EU PRESIDENT) shall confirm the covenant with many for one week:(1X7=7 YEARS) and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,(3 1/2 yrs in TEMPLE SACRIFICES STOPPED) and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:

40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south(EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR PROTECTING ISRAELS SECURITY) and the king of the north(RUSSIA) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

ISAIAH 26:21

I CAN'T STAND THESE FALSE CHRISTIANS THAT GO AGAINST GOD AND SAY THERES NO RAPTURE BEFORE THE 7 YR TRIBULATION,WHEN THE BIBLE CLEARLY SAYS TRUE CHRISTIANS WILL NOT BE GOING THREW THE 7 YEAR TRIBULATION OR 7 YEAR PEACE TREATY OF DANIEL 9:27.
