ISAIAH 6:9-12
9  And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
10  Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
11  Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,
12  And the LORD have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.

Turban complications-The turban represents the Shi'ite clergy that, ever since its creation in Iran almost four centuries ago, has had an ambivalent attitude towards the exercise of political power. Broadly speaking, turbans come in two contrasting colors. A white turban means that the man who wears it is not a descendant of the Prophet, and thus is of non-Arab origin. In contrast, the wearer of the black turban is marked as a descendant of the Prophet through one of the twelve imams of Twelver Shi'ism. The semiology of turbans is still more complicated. Students of theology are allowed to wear very thin turbans, denoting their position as novices. A hujjat al-Islam, or mid-ranking mullah, can wear a slightly fatter turban. The very fat turbans that require several yards of cloth are reserved for the grand ayatollahs. Rafsanjani’s white turban marked him as someone of non-Arab origin. Khatami and Khamenei both wear black turbans, as did Khomeini, denoting their Arab descent on the paternal side. The experience of the past three decades shows that many of the most senior clerics are not eager to enter the realm of politics. Once in power, however, a man with a thin turban could quickly thicken his headgear and grow a longer beard to bolster the religious aspect of his image. When first elected president, Ayatollah Khamenei was not a particularly senior cleric, but was promoted so that he could succeed Ayatollah Khomeini.

BRICS forum, in Brazil, condemns US, Israeli airstrikes on Iran-In rare diplomatic win for Tehran, 11-nation group says attacks on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear and missile programs ‘constitute a violation of international law’By AFP and ToI Staff Today, 11:50 pm-JUL 6,25

Iran won the support of fellow BRICS nations meeting in Rio de Janeiro today, with the bloc condemning Israel and the US for the assault on Iran’s nuclear program and military infrastructure throughout the 12-day war last month.“We condemn the military strikes against the Islamic Republic of Iran since 13 June 2025,” leaders said in a summit statement, without naming the United States or Israel.“We further express serious concern over deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities,” the bloc said. The 11-nation grouping said the strikes “constitute a violation of international law.”The declaration is a rare diplomatic victory for Tehran, which has received limited regional or global support after the bombing campaign by the Israeli military, which culminated in US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities at Natanz, Fordo, and Isfahan.Israel attacked Iran on June 13, declaring that the Islamic Republic’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs posed an imminent, existential threat to the Jewish state.Iranians carry a banner bearing the images of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during a rally in his support, as Shiite Muslims attend the ‘Tasua’ (ninth day) mourning ritual to commemorate martyrdom of the prophet Mohammad’s grandson Imam Hussein, during the Islamic month of Muharram ahead of Ashura on July 5, 2025. (AFP) -In retaliation for the strikes, Iran fired more than 500 ballistic missiles at Israel throughout the war, killing 28 people.Fighting stopped on June 24, with the adoption of a US-brokered ceasefire. The BRICS gathering includes Israel’s arch foe Iran, and also nations like Russia and China, which have ties with Tehran.BRICS diplomats had been in disagreement over how strongly to denounce Israel’s bombing of Iran and its actions in Gaza, but ultimately strengthened their language at Tehran’s request.

Israel carries out strikes on Houthi-controlled power station, ports across Yemen-IDF confirms that targets include ‘Galaxy Leader’ ship which was hijacked by Houthis in November 2023; Katz threatens that Iran-backed group will ‘continue to pay a heavy price’By Stav Levaton,ToI Staff and Agencies Today, 3:04 am-JUL 6,25

Israel carried out extensive strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen overnight between Sunday and Monday, shortly after it issued evacuation orders for several areas of the country. The IDF confirmed early Monday morning that its airstrikes had targeted multiple Houthi terror targets in Yemen, including the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Isa and Salif, and the Ras Khatib power station. The airstrikes also hit the “Galaxy Leader” vessel, which was hijacked by the Houthis in November 2023 and used for maritime surveillance and operational planning, the IDF said. The Houthis took the ship and its crew of 25 people — who hailed from from the Philippines, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and Mexico — captive in November 2023, only freeing them in January 2025 after more than a year of holding them hostage. The IDF said that the Houthis “installed a radar system on the ship, and are using it to track vessels in international maritime space, in order to promote the Houthi terrorist regime’s activities.”According to the military, all the targets hit in the overnight strikes were used by the Iran-backed Houthi regime to transfer weapons and conduct terror activity against Israel and global shipping. The IDF said the strikes come in response to repeated Houthi missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory and highlight the group’s ongoing use of civilian infrastructure for military purposes.Last Tuesday the Houthis fired a missile at Israel which set off sirens in most of Jerusalem as well as at Ben Gurion Airport, Modiin, Rishon Lezion and some West Bank settlements. The missile was intercepted and no injuries or damage was reported. In a statement early Monday morning, Defense Minister Israel Katz repeated the threat he made following that missile attack, that “Yemen will be treated like Tehran,” referencing the intensive Israeli strikes across Iran during the recent 12-day conflict.“Anyone who tries to harm Israel will be harmed, anyone who raises a hands against Israel will have it cut off,” Katz added, saying that the IDF was “forcefully” striking a number of terror targets in Yemen. “The Houthis will continue to pay a heavy price for their actions.”The strikes came about half an hour after the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman issued an “urgent” evacuation warning for the three Houthi-controlled ports and the power plant in Yemen. The Houthi military spokesperson claimed following the attacks that Houthis’ air defenses confronted the Israeli attack “by using a large number of domestically produced surface-to-air missiles.”Residents told Reuters that the Israeli strikes on the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah put the main power station out of service, leaving the city in darkness. There were no immediate reports of casualties.Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV reported that Israel launched a series of strikes on Hodeidah. The campaign came hours after a ship was attacked off the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah and the ship’s crew abandoned it as it took on water. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but security firm Ambrey said the vessel fits the typical profile of a Houthi target. The Houthis began attacking Israel and maritime traffic in November 2023, a month after the October 7 Hamas massacre. The Houthis held their fire when a ceasefire was reached between Israel and Hamas in January 2025. By that point, they had fired over 40 ballistic missiles and dozens of attack drones and cruise missiles at Israel, including one that killed a civilian and wounded several others in Tel Aviv in July, prompting Israel’s first strike in Yemen.Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis have launched 53 ballistic missiles and at least 13 drones at Israel. Several of the missiles have fallen short. They broadened their campaign to target ships tied to the United States and Britain after the two countries began military strikes aimed at securing the waterway in January 2024.In May, the Houthis cemented a ceasefire with the United States that ended weeks of intense US strikes against it, but vowed to continue targeting Israel and Israeli ships.

ust as residents return, Gazan projectile hits Kibbutz Nirim, causing no injuries-Government last week greenlit residents’ return to border community, among the hardest-hit in Oct. 7 onslaught; IDF says human error resulted in lack of interception By Stav Levaton-and ToI Staff Today, 1:03 am-JUL 6,25

A mortar shell launched from the southern Gaza Strip landed in Kibbutz Nirim near the Israel-Gaza border on Sunday evening, causing no injuries but reportedly resulting in minor damage. The Israeli Air Force said that a preliminary investigation into the incident found the projectile was not intercepted due to human error. The military said it was learning lessons from the incident and corrective measures were already being put into action. The launch of the single projectile, around 9 p.m. on Sunday, triggered sirens in the border community just a week after its residents were permitted to return home after more than 20 months of displacement as a result of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack.Nirim was one of seven evacuated communities in which the government last week approved the return of their residents, out of the 13 hardest-hit in the Hamas onslaught. The Ynet news site reported that the impact was in the kibbutz’s new young people’s neighborhood, which is being constructed after the previous one was largely destroyed in the October 7 attack.Ynet reported that the shell caused minor damage to several buildings that are in the process of being renovated and rebuilt, but that no one currently lives in them.Michal Uziyahu, head of the area’s Eshkol Regional Council, said in a statement: “We will not accept a situation of continued fire on our territory, and we expect an investigation into the failure, by which no interception was carried out.”She added that the council demands a “determination to change the security reality, and we still have no doubt that we must do everything to reach a deal that will end the fighting, and return our loved ones home,” referring to a potential hostage-truce agreement with Hamas.A day earlier, on Saturday, two rockets were launched from Gaza, triggering sirens in the border community of Kissufim. Both rockets were intercepted, and there were no reports of injuries or damage.Rocket attacks, while common in the early days of the war — including nonstop barrages during the Hamas invasion itself — have largely ceased in recent months.During the October 7 attack on Nirim, five civilians were murdered inside the kibbutz, while five others were abducted to Gaza — three of whom were released in November 2023 while the other two were murdered in captivity and their bodies later recovered by the military.Ten IDF soldiers and officers were killed in the attack on the Nirim area, including at a nearby army post. Six of the slain troops were abducted to Gaza, along with two other soldiers who were taken alive by the terrorists.Emanuel Fabian contributed to this report.

ISRAEL AT WAR - DAY 640-Heading to DC, Netanyahu seeks Gaza deal ‘on our terms,’ vows Hamas will be destroyed-At meeting Monday, Trump reportedly wants to finalize framework for ending the war; PM insists that when that happens, ‘Hamas will not be there’; also said to still reject PA role-By Lazar Berman,Nava Freiberg and ToI Staff 6 July 2025, 10:34 pm

As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed Israel on Sunday for Washington, where he will meet with US President Donald Trump, he highlighted his opposition to any hostage deal that would ultimately leave Hamas in power in Gaza.“Twenty living hostages remain and 30 who are fallen. I am determined, we are determined, to bring back all of them,” the premier told reporters, as he prepared to board the Wing of Zion state plane. But, he added, “we are determined to ensure that Gaza will no longer constitute a threat to Israel. That means, we will not allow a situation that encourages more kidnappings, more murders, more beheadings, more invasions.”“That means one thing: eliminating Hamas’s military and governing capabilities. Hamas will not be there,” he said. An Israeli negotiating team was traveling to Doha, meanwhile, for indirect talks with the terror group on a deal.Asked whether there will be a hostage deal within the week, Netanyahu turned back to the reporters — something he rarely does – and said: “We are working to reach this deal under the terms we have agreed to.”“I sent a team to the negotiations with clear directives,” he said. “I think the conversation with President Trump can certainly help advance the outcome we are all hoping for.”Gaza is expected to be the main subject of Monday’s discussion between Netanyahu and Trump, who has repeatedly called in recent days for an end to the war that began when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.Trump said on Tuesday that Israel had accepted the latest ceasefire proposal, which provides for the release in five separate stages of 10 living and 18 slain hostages, in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire, an influx of humanitarian aid to the Strip, and the release of many Palestinian security prisoners and detainees. (Eight living hostages would be freed on the first day and two released on the 50th day, according to an Arab diplomat from one of the mediating countries. Five slain hostages would be returned on the seventh day, five more on the 30th day and eight more on the 60th day. That would leave 22 hostages still held in Gaza, 10 of them believed to be alive. It is not clear whether Israel or Hamas would determine who would be released.)Hamas on Friday gave what it called a “positive” response to the proposal. However, the terror group stressed it has reservations about the proposed truce, most notably its temporary nature, and has demanded a guarantee that agreeing to the deal will lead to a permanent end of the war.Netanyahu’s office called the demands — which also concerned aid mechanisms and IDF troop withdrawals — “unacceptable.”The so-called Witkoff proposal on which the nascent deal is based provides for negotiations on a permanent ceasefire to be completed during the 60-day truce period. However, it adds that if the permanent ceasefire is not finalized in that period, “the temporary ceasefire may be extended under conditions and for a duration to be agreed upon by the parties so long as the parties are negotiating in good faith.”One of Hamas’s reservations reportedly relates to the phrase “so long as the parties are negotiating in good faith,” which it wants deleted since it fears Netanyahu would exploit that phrase to avoid ending the war.A Channel 12 report on Friday claimed Trump could personally pledge to do his utmost to ensure the success of negotiations on a permanent end to the war. Trump, the unsourced report claimed, could publicly “commit that negotiations over the terms for ending the war will continue even after a temporary ceasefire, and that he will do everything in his power to help the parties reach an agreement on the terms of a permanent ceasefire.”Trump wants to finalize framework for ending war – report-Channel 12, citing senior US officials, reported that Trump wishes to finalize a framework for ending the war during Monday’s meeting.A central topic the leaders will discuss is the “day after” plan in Gaza, the network said. It said post-war governance of the Strip would also be the main focus of diplomatic talks during the 60-day truce, should Hamas and Israel agree to the overall deal.According to the report, Netanyahu continues to insist that the Palestinian Authority can have no role in governing post-war Gaza, while Trump’s proposal remains to be seen.Israel is willing to be more flexible on its stance that Hamas leaders be exiled from the Gaza Strip as part of the agreement, said Channel 12. That is because, according to an Israeli official, “There aren’t many senior Hamas officials left in Gaza. They wouldn’t fill a ship to be exiled; even a paddleboard would do.”According to US sources, the Trump administration is interested in the two leaders issuing a joint public declaration “that will obligate both sides” to whatever agreement arises.“It could be that after the declaration, a few days will be needed to finalize details, but the goal is to establish commitment and obligation to the process,” the sources were quoted by Channel 12 as saying.Israeli cabinet ministers told the network following a cabinet meeting Saturday night that “Netanyahu is interested in reaching a deal, despite the obstacles that still exist, and despite the fact that much debate is expected over the kind of terrorists and the number of terrorists who will be released” in a potential hostage-prisoner swap.PM: Iran war created historic opportunity for peacemaking-The prime minister’s trip — his third to the White House since Trump’s election — also comes after the US attacked key Iranian nuclear facilities, then brokered a ceasefire, in the 12-day war that Israel launched against the Islamic Republic last month.Addressing the aftermath of the Iran war, Netanyahu told journalists at the airport that Israel has an opportunity “to expand the circle of peace far beyond what we could have imagined.”“We have already transformed the Middle East beyond recognition, and we now have a chance to bring a great future to the people of Israel and the Middle East,” he said.A spate of reports last week said the premier has been working with Trump on a plan that would end the Gaza war, recommit Israel to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and normalize Israeli-Saudi and Israeli-Syrian relations. Netanyahu has not confirmed any such plan. The premier told reporters that, while in Washington, he will thank Trump for his support during the Iran war, which resulted in a “tremendous victory” over the Islamic Republic.“For years, we feared what we would do about Iran and whether we could overcome Iran,” Netanyahu said.Israel launched its air campaign in Iran declaring the regime’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs to be imminent, existential threats.“Our heroic pilots have flown not only [over Iran], but also over Lebanon,” the prime minister added. Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon fired rockets and drones at Israel every day for almost a year following Hamas’s October 7 attack, until a two-month open war with Israel that devastated the group in fall 2024, and ended with a November ceasefire. The prime minister said that during his trip, he will meet with “all the senior officials in the administration, and senior congresspeople from both parties, and with many other important people.”Netanyahu is slated to return to Israel on Thursday, though he often extends his trips to include the Jewish sabbath, and then returns on Saturday night.

Red Sea ship attacked by gunfire and RPGs from small boats, UK maritime agency says-No group claims attack, which takes place near Houthi-controlled port of Hodeida, where the Iran-backed group has carried out several similar assaults-By AP and ToI Staff 6 July 2025, 6:48 pm

A ship came under attack Sunday in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen by armed men firing guns and launching rocket-propelled grenades, a group overseen by the British military said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which comes as tensions remain high in the Middle East over the Israel-Hamas war and after the Iran-Israel war and airstrikes by the United States targeting Iranian nuclear sites. The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said that an armed security team on the unidentified vessel had returned fire and that the “situation is ongoing.” It described the attack as happening some 100 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of Hodeida, Yemen, which is held by the country’s Houthi rebels.“Authorities are investigating,” it said.Ambrey, a private maritime security firm, issued an alert saying that a merchant ship had been “attacked by eight skiffs while transiting northbound in the Red Sea.” It said it believed the attack was ongoing.Ambrey later said the ship also had been attacked by bomb-carrying drone boats, which could mark a major escalation in the region. It said two drone boats struck the ship, while another two had been destroyed by the armed guards on board.UKMTO WARNING INCIDENT 026-25 – ATTACKhttps://t.co/CcRBRqH8Bb#MaritimeSecurity #MarSec pic.twitter.com/rngVoNJyPI— UKMTO Ops Centre (@UK_MTO) July 6, 2025-The US Navy’s Mideast-based 5th Fleet referred questions to the military’s Central Command, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Houthi rebels have been launching missile and drone attacks against commercial and military ships in the region in what the group’s leadership has described as an effort to end Israel’s offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The group’s al-Masirah satellite news channel acknowledged the attack occurred, but offered no other comment on it as it aired a speech by its secretive leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi. However, Ambrey said the targeted vessel met “the established Houthi target profile,” without elaborating. The Houthis — whose slogan calls for “Death to America, Death to Israel, [and] a Curse on the Jews” — began attacking Israel and maritime traffic in November 2023, a month after the October 7 Hamas-led massacre and hostage-taking in Israel that started the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.Between November 2023 and January 2025, the Houthis targeted more than 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones, sinking two of them and killing four sailors. That has greatly reduced the flow of trade through the Red Sea corridor, which typically sees $1 trillion of goods move through it annually. The group, which had said it was acting in solidarity with Palestinians, stopped firing at US ships under a May 2025 agreement, though it has continued to attack Israel directly with missiles.Meanwhile, a wider, decadelong war in Yemen between the Houthis and the country’s exiled government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, remains in a stalemate. The Yemeni Coast Guard, which is loyal to the exiled government, has engaged in a firefight with at least one vessel in the Red Sea in the past as well.Pirates from Somalia also have operated in the region, though typically they’ve sought to capture vessels either to rob or ransom their crews.

Israel: Hamas’s north Gaza naval commander killed in strike on cafe last week-IDF says Ramzi Ramadan Abd Ali Salah was killed along with several other senior Hamas members; Gaza hospitals say 33 killed in Israeli strikes across the enclave since morning By Stav Levaton,ToI Staff and Agencies 6 July 2025, 5:19 pm

The Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet announced on Sunday that Ramzi Ramadan Abd Ali Salah, the commander of Hamas’s naval force in northern Gaza, was killed in an airstrike last Monday in Gaza City. The military confirmed that he was the target of a strike in an internet cafe, which Hamas-linked authorities said killed 24 people, including women and children.Several other terrorists were killed in the operation, the military said.Salah, identified by the IDF as a key figure in Hamas’s maritime capabilities, had been actively planning attacks against Israeli forces operating in the Strip, the military said. He was targeted inside a building in Gaza City, where he was meeting with other operatives. The strike, carried out by an Israeli Air Force jet, was guided by intelligence from the Navy, the Military Intelligence Directorate, and the Shin Bet.Among the other Hamas members killed were Hisham Ayman Atiya Mansour, deputy head of a Hamas mortar unit, and Nassim Muhammad Suleiman Abu Sabha, a member of Hamas’s mortar unit, according to the joint statement.???? Five of the dead belonged to the same family, according to the hospital. The figures offered by hospital officials did not distinguish between combatants and civilians. The military had no immediate comment on the individual strikes, but said it had struck 130 terror targets across the Gaza Strip in the previous 24 hours. The IDF said the strikes targeted Hamas command and control structures, storage facilities, weapons, and launchers, and killed a number of terror operatives in northern Gaza. Also on Sunday, the IDF provided further details on the incident in which Sgt. Asaf Zamir, 19, from Dimona, was killed on Friday in combat in the Khan Younis area of southern Gaza.According to the military, Zamir was killed during operational activity conducted by the 53rd Armored Corps Battalion of the 188th Brigade. During the incident, four other soldiers were wounded — two severely and two moderately.Among the injured was the company commander, who sustained wounds while attempting to rescue the forces under fire.Shortly after the attack, the Israeli Air Force struck and eliminated part of the cell responsible for the assault.Israeli forces have operated inside the Gaza strip for over 20 months, since the  Hamas-led terror onslaught on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which some 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage.Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along the border with the Strip stands at 441.During this time, more than 57,000 people have been killed in the Strip, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry. The Hamas-provided death toll cannot be independently verified and does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. Israel says it has killed some 20,000 combatants in battle as of January and another 1,600 terrorists inside Israel during the Hamas onslaught that sparked the war.

Israeli team heads to Doha for indirect talks with Hamas-Herzog urges Netanyahu to brave ‘difficult’ choice on Gaza deal ahead of Trump meet-President says he fully supports efforts to bring back captives even if ‘cost is not simple,’ thanks Trump for help against Iran and ‘unwavering support for Israel’By Nava Freiberg-6 July 2025, 3:27 pm

President Isaac Herzog encouraged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to rise above internal objections and be prepared to make “painful” concessions, as the premier headed to Washington for talks on a hostage deal and ceasefire in Gaza Sunday.Netanyahu’s rare meeting with the president, who is seen as a uniting societal force, came days after the premier paid his first visit to the hard-hit Kibbutz Nir Oz near the Gaza border — both moves that may be aimed at building support across ideological lines as hawkish hardliners publicly oppose a Gaza agreement being pushed by the US and seen as likely to bolt the coalition if the deal goes ahead.According to a readout from Herzog’s office, the president stressed the urgency of securing a breakthrough in talks for a hostage deal and ceasefire in Gaza when he meets with US President Donald Trump on Monday.“I fully support these efforts, even when they involve difficult, complex, and painful decisions,” Herzog said. “The cost is not simple, but I am confident that the cabinet and the security establishment will rise to the challenge, as they have until now.”Netanyahu’s office did not comment on the meeting with Herzog. As Netanyahu headed to Washington, a high-level team of negotiators was making its way to Qatar for indirect talks with Hamas, after the terror group said Friday that it had responded positively to a US- and Israel-backed proposal.Israel’s delegation to Doha includes government hostage point man Gal Hirsch, Netanyahu’s political adviser Ophir Falk, deputy Shin Bet chief “Mem,” and a senior Mossad official, Army Radio reported.Mossad chief David Barnea, acting Shin Bet head “Shin,” and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, the senior-most officials who have been involved in talks thus far, were not among the team.Herzog wished the negotiators success and called on “world leaders and international partners to use their full influence to help achieve a breakthrough.”“We have no time to waste,” said Herzog.Hamas on Friday said it had responded “positively” to the framework proposal on the table, which would see about half of the living hostages and about half of the dead hostages held by terror groups in Gaza returned to Israel over 60 days, in five separate releases.Eight living hostages would be freed on the first day and two released on the 50th day, according to an Arab diplomat from one of the mediating countries. Five slain hostages would be returned on the seventh day, five more on the 30th day and eight more on the 60th day. That would leave 22 hostages still held in Gaza, 10 of them believed to be alive. It is not clear whether Israel or Hamas would determine who is to be released.A source involved in mediating the talks said Hamas wants the agreement to say that talks on a permanent ceasefire will continue until an agreement is reached; that aid will fully resume through mechanisms backed by the United Nations and other international aid organizations; and that the IDF withdraw to positions it maintained before the collapse of the previous ceasefire in March.Netanyahu’s office called the demands “unacceptable.”The previous ceasefire fell apart as Netanyahu refused to negotiate a second phase, which would have required a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and talks on ending the war — a red line for the premier’s far-right coalition partners.Netanyahu’s right-wing flank insists the war must continue until Hamas is completely destroyed, following the terror group’s October 7, 2023, onslaught, in which some 1,200 people were killed in southern Israel and 251 kidnapped. The position was shared by Netanyahu, but in recent days he has made a number of statements that align with a view that places freeing the hostages, 50 of whom are held in Gaza, paramount. At the same time, Trump has expressed optimism that the sides could be closing in on a deal, predicting last week that it could be clinched within days.Gaza is expected to be the main subject under discussion when Netanyahu meets the US president, though the two will also discuss Iran and the possibility of normalizing relations with Syria, according to a US official.Herzog thanked Trump “for his support in eliminating Iran’s nuclear threat” during the 12-day war there last month, “and for his unwavering support for Israel.”He and Netanyahu also discussed “opportunities to deepen ties with additional countries, in the spirit of Trump’s Abraham Accords,” which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations during Trump’s first term, Herzog’s office said.Netanyahu, who has publicly vowed to keep fighting in Gaza until Hamas is vanquished, is reportedly working with Trump on a plan that would end the war, recommit Israel to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and normalize Israeli-Saudi and Israeli-Syrian relations. Netanyahu has not confirmed any such plan.He said on Wednesday that Israel’s aims of both defeating Hamas and freeing the hostages were still attainable: “I am telling you, there will be no Hamas,” he said. “There will be no Hamastan. We are not going back to that. It is over. We will release all our hostages.”Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Turkey says methane exposure kills 5 troops in north Iraq.

Istanbul, July 6 (AFP) Jul 06, 2025-Five Turkish soldiers died after being exposed to methane gas during a search operation in caves in northern Iraq on Sunday, the defence ministry said. The incident comes at a sensitive time with Turkey in talks to end the conflict with the Kurds after the PKK militant group agreed to end its decades-long armed struggle. The conflict, which began in 1984, has cost more than 40,000 lives. The incident occurred as they were searching for the remains of a soldier who was shot dead by Kurdish fighters in the area in May 2022, whose body was never recovered, it said.At the time, Turkey was waging Operation Claw Lock, with its troops seeking to eradicate Kurdish PKK militants holed up in caves along the border."During a search operation in a cave... previously known to have been used as a hospital... 19 of our personnel were exposed to methane gas." it said. They were immediately taken to hospital for treatment, but five of them died, it said.News of the deaths emerged as a delegation from the pro-Kurdish DEM party was visiting jailed PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan as part of the ongoing negotiations with the Turkish government."During the meeting, we were informed that there were soldiers who lost their lives due to methane gas poisoning in the territory of the Kurdistan Regional Government," the delegation said."This incident caused Mr Ocalan and all of us deep sadness. We wish Allah's mercy to those who lost their lives and offer our condolences to their families and relatives."

Visa's 24/7 war room takes on global cybercriminals.

Ashburn, United States, July 7 (AFP) Jul 07, 2025-In the heart of Data Center Alley -- a patch of suburban Washington where much of the world's internet traffic flows -- Visa operates its global fraud command center. The numbers that the payments giant grapples with are enormous. Every year, $15 trillion flows through Visa's networks, representing roughly 15 percent of the world's economy. And bad actors constantly try to syphon off some of that money.Modern fraudsters vary dramatically in sophistication. To stay ahead, Visa has invested $12 billion over the past five years building AI-powered cyber fraud detection capabilities, knowing that criminals are also spending big."You have everybody from a single individual threat actor looking to make a quick buck all the way to really corporatized criminal organizations that generate tens or hundreds of millions of dollars annually from fraud and scam activities," Michael Jabbara, Visa's global head of fraud solutions, told AFP during a tour of the company's security campus."These organizations are very structured in how they operate."The best-resourced criminal syndicates now focus on scams that directly target consumers, enticing them into purchases or transactions by manipulating their emotions."Consumers are continuously vulnerable. They can be exploited, and that's where we've seen a much higher incidence of attacks recently," Jabbara said.- Scam centers -The warning signs are clear: anything that seems too good to be true online is suspicious, and romance opportunities with strangers from distant countries are especially dangerous."What you don't realize is that the person you're chatting with is more likely than not in a place like Myanmar," Jabbara warned. He said human-trafficking victims are forced to work in multi-billion-dollar cyber scam centers built by Asian crime networks in Myanmar's lawless border regions. The most up-to-date fraud techniques are systematic and quietly devastating.Once criminals obtain your card information, they automatically distribute it across numerous merchant websites that generate small recurring charges -- amounts low enough that victims may not notice for months. Some of these operations increasingly resemble legitimate tech companies, offering services and digital products to fraudsters much like Google or Microsoft cater to businesses. On the dark web, criminals can purchase comprehensive fraud toolkits."You can buy the software. You can buy a tutorial on how to use the software. You can get access to a mule network on the ground or you can get access to a bot network" to carry out denial-of-service attacks that overwhelm servers with traffic, effectively shutting them down.Just as cloud computing lowered barriers for startups by eliminating the need to build servers, "the same type of trend has happened in the cyber crime and fraud space," Jabbara explained. These off-the-shelf services can also enable bad actors to launch brute force attacks on an industrial scale -- using repeated payment attempts to crack a card's number, expiry date, and security code. The sophistication extends to corporate-style management, Jabbara said. Some criminal organizations now employ chief risk officers who determine operational risk appetite. They might decide that targeting government infrastructure and hospitals generates an excessive amount of attention from law enforcement and is too risky to pursue.- 'Millions of attacks' -To combat these unprecedented threats, Jabbara leads a payment scam disruption team focused on understanding criminal methodologies. From a small room called the Risk Operations Center in Virginia, employees analyze data streams on multiple screens, searching for patterns that distinguish fraudulent activity from legitimate credit card use.In the larger Cyber Fusion Center, staff monitor potential cyberattacks targeting Visa's own infrastructure around the clock."We deal with millions of attacks across different parts of our network," Jabbara noted, emphasizing that most are handled automatically without human intervention.Visa maintains identical facilities in London and Singapore, ensuring 24-hour global vigilance.arp/dw

Taiwan says China opening flight path raises regional unease.

Taipei, July 6 (AFP) Jul 06, 2025-Taipei condemned Sunday China's move to open a sensitive aviation route that runs through the Taiwan Strait, warning the change could increase tensions between the two sides and "regional unease".Taiwan's top China policy body criticised Beijing after its civil aviation authority opened another west-to-east connecting route above the sensitive waterway.China has shown "complete disregard for the consensus of both sides and Taiwan's public opinion, using unilateral actions to change the status quo and increase cross-strait and regional unease", Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council said.Beijing adjusted the M503 north-to-south route through the Taiwan Strait in January 2024 and opened two west-to-east connecting flight paths months later. The newly-activated west-to-east route is intended to "alleviate the pressure caused by the increase of flights", China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman Chen Binhua said Sunday, quoted by state news agency Xinhua. But Taipei's Mainland Affairs Council denied there had been an increase in air traffic. It said China had "unilaterally violated the consensus" three times by launching the routes without consulting Taiwan and urged Beijing to engage in negotiations."The current cross-strait and Asia-Pacific situation is complex, the Mainland's unilateral actions will escalate regional tensions, which no party wishes to see," the Council said.Beijing insists democratic Taiwan is part of its territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring the self-ruled island under its control.Beijing regularly deploys fighter jets, warships and coast guard ships near Taiwan, and has held several major military exercises around the island in recent years.

India's Modi praises Dalai Lama on 90th birthday.

New Delhi, July 6 (AFP) Jul 06, 2025-India, the decades-long host of the Dalai Lama, called the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader a "symbol of love" on his 90th birthday Sunday, a landmark anniversary that has raised geopolitical questions for the future. The effusive support is significant, as Tibetans in exile fear China will eventually name its own rival successor to the Dalai Lama, bolstering Beijing's control over Tibet, the territory it poured troops into in 1950 and has ruled ever since.India has hosted the Dalai Lama since he and thousands of other Tibetans fled Chinese troops who crushed an uprising in their capital Lhasa in 1959.The Dalai Lama says only his India-based office has the right to identify his eventual successor."I join 1.4 billion Indians in extending our warmest wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday," Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement."He has been an enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline," he added."His message has inspired respect and admiration across all faiths. We pray for his continued good health and long life."China insisted Wednesday that it would have final say on who succeeds the Tibetan spiritual leader.India and China are intense rivals competing for influence across South Asia, but have sought to repair ties after a 2020 border clash.US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also said in a statement that Washington was "committed to promoting respect for the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Tibetans"."We support efforts to preserve Tibetans' distinct linguistic, cultural, and religious heritage, including their ability to freely choose and venerate religious leaders without interference," the statement added.

Trump evokes Russia sanctions after largest assault on Ukraine-By Victoria LUKOVENKO and Barbara WOJAZER.

Kyiv, Ukraine (AFP) July 5, 2025-US President Donald Trump said Russia just wanted to "keep killing people" and hinted at sanctions after Moscow launched its largest ever drone and missile attack on Ukraine in the three-year-old war.Trump said Friday he was "very unhappy" about his telephone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, saying: "He wants to go all the way, just keep killing people, it's no good".The US president said he and Putin talked about sanctions "a lot", adding: "He understands that it may be coming".Hours-long Russian bombardments sent Ukrainians scurrying for shelters across the country and came after the call between Trump and Putin, which ended without a breakthrough.AFP journalists in Kyiv heard drones buzzing over the capital and explosions ringing out throughout the night as Ukrainian air defence systems fended off the attack.Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke to Trump Friday and said they agreed to work on bolstering Kyiv's defences."We spoke about opportunities in air defence and agreed that we will work together to strengthen protection of our skies," Zelensky said on social media after the call.Tymur, a Kyiv resident who said he had experienced previous Russian attacks, told AFP that the assault in the early hours of Friday felt different from others.- 'Nothing like this happened' -"Nothing like this attack had ever happened before. There have never been so many explosions," he said. The Kremlin said Friday it was "preferable" to achieve the goals of its invasion through political and diplomatic means."But as long as that is not possible, we are continuing the special operation," spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, referring to Russia's invasion. At least three people were wounded in Russian drone and artillery strikes on several parts of Eastern Ukraine overnight Friday to Saturday, regional governor Sergiy Lysak said on Telegram.Zelensky said Friday air alerts began echoing out across the country as the Trump-Putin call was getting under way.He urged the United States in particular to increase pressure on Moscow, which on Friday announced fresh territorial gains on the front line with the capture of a village in the Donetsk region.Poland said its embassy building in Kyiv had been damaged in the attack but that staff were unharmed. In Kyiv, one person was pulled from the rubble after the strikes, which also wounded at least 26 people, emergency services said. The barrage, according to the air force, comprised 539 drones and 11 missiles.A representative of Ukraine's air force told Ukrainian media that the attack was the largest of the Russian invasion.- Escalating overnight attacks -Overnight Russian attacks have escalated over recent weeks. An AFP tally found Moscow launched a record number of drones and missiles at Ukraine in June, when direct peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow appeared to stall. In Kyiv, AFP journalists saw dozens of residents of the capital taking shelter in a metro station.Yuliia Golovnina, who said she sheltered at the metro regularly, described the worry that came with hearing an explosion during an attack."Will there be another one? Will something collapse on you?" the 47-year-old said."In those seconds, you just hold your breath and wait to see what happens next," she added. In Kyiv, concerns mounted over whether the US would continue delivering military aid, which is key to Ukraine's ability to fend off the drone and missile barrages. The US announced this week it was reducing some of its aid deliveries.European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said this was a clear signal that the 27-nation European Union needed to "step up".Ukraine has also ramped up its retaliatory strikes in Russia, where a woman was killed by a Ukrainian drone attack overnight, the acting governor of the Rostov region said.Talks, spearheaded by the United States to secure a ceasefire, have stalled.Delegations from the two sides last met more than a month ago, when they agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners each.Russia announced a fresh swap of prisoners of war with Ukraine on Friday as part of that agreement.

ISAIAH 23:15-17
15  And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot.
16  Take an harp, go about the city, thou harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered.
17  And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.(COULD THIS BE 70 YEARS AFTER ISRAEL BECAME A NATION IN 1948)(IF SO THIS SATANIC ONE WORLD WHORE CHURCH WILL MINGLE TOGETHER BY 2018)(AND NOW ISLAM AND CHRISTIANITY AND ALL RELIGIONS ARE MINGLING AS ONE PEACE-LOVE-JOY-GET ALONG RELIGION LEAD BY THE VATICAN RIGHT NOW 4 YEARS FROM THE 70 YEAR TIME WHEN ISRAEL BECAME A NATION).AND IN CONTROL OF JERUSALEM.

13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
16 And he(FALSE POPE) causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:(CHIP IMPLANT)
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(6-6-6) A NUMBER SYSTEM

5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.
8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.
12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.
14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.
15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.(VATICAN-CATHOLICS ALL AROUND THE WORLD OVER 1 BILLION)

17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.(VATICAN)

Where Muslims, Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians, Bahai coexist-End of Israel-Iran war tests the harmony of LA’s huge, mixed-faith Iranian community-Fallout of the 12-day war has come to ‘Tehrangeles,’ the largest Iranian diaspora community in the world; ‘It’s been an emotional roller coaster,’ says one local-By DEEPA BHARATH 5 July 2025, 8:31 pm

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Tehrangeles” in West Los Angeles is home to the largest Iranian community outside Iran. This cultural enclave, also known as Little Persia, is where Iranian Muslims, Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians and Bahai have peacefully coexisted for decades. But the recent war between Israel and Iran — a bloody, 12-day conflict paused by a fragile ceasefire — has brought up religious tensions and political debates that rarely surface in this culturally harmonious environment. To complicate matters, the US — an ally of Israel — bombed Iran during the war. Many Iranian Jews in the diaspora have viewed the onset of the war with “anxious glee,” said Daniel Bral, a West Los Angeles resident whose grandfather, Moossa Bral, was the sole Jewish member of parliament in prerevolutionary Iran. He sees family members and others in the community rejoicing at the possibility of their “tormentor” being vanquished. But Bral feels differently.“I’m just nervous and am completely rattled by everything that is happening,” he said. “I understand and sympathize with people’s hope for regime change. But I worry about the safety of civilians and the efficacy of the operation removing Iran as a nuclear threat.”But Bral doesn’t see the war itself as a divisive issue in the diaspora because antagonism for the current regime is common across religious groups.“This hatred for the regime actually unifies Muslims and Jews,” he said.Cultural enclave offers a sense of grounding-Kamran Afary, a professor of communication at California State University, Los Angeles, who emigrated from Iran in the 1970s and co-wrote a book about identities in Iranian diaspora, said the community, for the most part, has nursed a spirit of tolerance and respect, much like his interfaith family. While Afary is spiritual but not religious, other members of his family practice Judaism, Islam, and the Baha’i faith.“Interfaith marriage used to be fraught, but even that is common now,” he said.Afary says for him, Tehrangeles, with its row of grocery stores, ice cream and kebab shops, restaurants, bakeries and bookstores, offers solace and a sense of grounding in his culture and roots. There are about half a million Iranian Americans in the Greater Los Angeles region. The largest wave of Iranians migrated to the area after Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was overthrown in 1979 and Ayatollah Khomeini assumed control, establishing the Islamic Republic of Iran. West Los Angeles, in particular, has the largest concentration of Iranian Jews outside Iran.A test for long-held bonds-Diane Winston, professor of media and religion at the University of Southern California, said Israel’s recent fight against the regime in Iran could test relationships between Iranian Jews and Muslims.“Muslims, who otherwise would be happy to see regime change, might have felt a little differently about it because their antipathy for Zionism is strong,” she said.Winston also observed that in the diaspora, which is concentrated in wealthy cities like Beverly Hills and Westwood, it is not just religion or culture that brings people together, but also their elevated social status.“They go to the same schools, parties and cultural events,” she said. “In general, Iranian Muslims and Jews are not quite as religious as their counterparts back home. Los Angeles is a city where there is room to be orthodox, but also being less religious is not a problem. The less religious Jews and Muslims are, the less antipathy they may have toward each other.”A time of fear and uncertainty-Tanaz Golshan was 2 when her family left Iran in 1986. She serves as the senior vice president of Caring for Jews in Need, the Jewish Federation Los Angeles’ service arm. She is also the organization’s liaison to the Iranian Jewish community.Judaism for Iranians is “more cultural and familial,” Golshan said. Getting together on Friday for Shabbat means having Persian Jewish dishes like “gondi,” which are dumplings served in soup.“In my family, we didn’t grow up too religious,” she said. “We don’t think about religion when we go to a restaurant or market. You’ll find people in both communities that are extreme and don’t want anything to do with the other. But in general, we have a lot of love and respect for each other.”And yet this is proving to be a tense and scary time for Iranian Jews in the diaspora, she said.“What happens globally can affect security locally,” Golshan said, adding the federation’s helpline has received calls asking if there are any threats to local Jewish institutions, she said. “There is real fear that temples and community centers could become targets.”On Monday, Golshan’s organization and others hosted more than 350 community members for a virtual event titled, LA United: Iranian and Israeli Communities in Solidarity.A call for regime change in Iran-Reactions to the war have been nuanced, regardless of religious affiliations. Arezo Rashidian, whose family is Muslim, is a Southern California political activist who favors regime change in Iran. She supports the return of Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of the shah, who has declared he is ready to lead the country’s transition to a democratic government.Rashidian said she has never been able to visit Iran because of her activism. The only hope for her return would be for the current regime to fall. This is why the ceasefire has stirred mixed feelings for her and many others in the community, she said.“It’s been an emotional roller coaster. No one wants a war, but we were on the brink of seeing this regime collapse. We were so close,” she said.Lior Sternfeld, professor of history and Jewish studies at Penn State University, said Iranian Jews in the diaspora identify with Iran, Israel and the US, and that these identities are “often not in harmony.”“They don’t see the Islamic Republic as Iran anymore, but an entity to be demolished,” he said. “They see Israel more as a religious homeland.”US President Donald Trump enjoyed strong support in the diaspora and has now upset his backers in the community because he has stated he is not interested in regime change, Sternfeld said.Desire for unity and common ground-There is a push, particularly in the younger generation, for peace and understanding among religious groups in the diaspora.Bral says he is engaged in peacebuilding work through his writing and advocacy. “We are cousins at the end of the day, as clichéd and corny as that sounds,” he said.Bral’s friend Rachel Sumekh, whose parents emigrated from Iran, grew up Jewish in the San Fernando Valley. Sumekh hosts dinner parties with her diverse group of friends as a way of widening her circle across religious lines. In December, she hosted a gathering for Yalda, an ancient Persian festival with Zoroastrian roots, which is observed on the winter solstice as celebrants look forward to brighter days. Last year, Yalda, which also marks the victory of light over darkness, coincided with Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights.“We created a new tradition bringing people of both traditions together to emphasize how much we have in common,” Sumekh said. “This war is just a reminder that as much as our day-to-day lives may be separate, there is still a lot we share in terms of culture and as a people.”

US Embassy in Rome Honors First American-Born Pope While Celebrating US-Vatican Diplomatic Milestone-In 1984, President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II established full diplomatic ties.July 4, 2025

Beneath a canopy of Roman pines, Americans in Rome celebrated the Fourth of July this year with something more than barbecue and fireworks: the historic election of the first pope born and raised in the United States.“Let us celebrate the milestone of an American pope on the Fourth of July, in the spirit of friendship, freedom and shared purpose,” said Laura Hochla, chargé d’affaires of the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See, addressing the crowd at Villa Richardson, the U.S. ambassador’s residence. The embassy’s annual Independence Day celebration, held June 30, commemorated not only the 249th anniversary of the United States but also the 41st anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Washington and the Holy See — ties that now find new resonance in the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native.Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican secretary for relations with states, said the election of Pope Leo XIV brought the contribution of the U.S. to the Church “to another level” as he gave an overview of the history of U.S.-Vatican relations in his speech at the party.  “I have normally as an Englishman approached the celebration of the Fourth of July and American independence with a certain degree of liberty in humor rather than in independence,” Archbishop Gallagher, a Liverpool native, said. “But now that we have an American pope, I have to recalculate my remarks.”Tracing relations back to the earliest days of the republic, Archbishop Gallagher noted that the Catholic Church’s presence in America began with humble missionaries and immigrants. “Catholics were sometimes viewed with suspicion in their adopted homeland. However, as their numbers grew, so did their contribution to American society,” he said.“The first diplomatic contact [between the United States and the papacy] dates back to 1788, when Benjamin Franklin sent to Pope Pius VI a message from George Washington. In it he said that the newly independent state saw no need to be involved in the appointment of bishops, as the American Revolution brought not only freedom for the colonies but also religious liberty,” Archbishop Gallagher recounted. The United States maintained consular relations with the Papal States beginning in 1797 and diplomatic relations with the pope from 1848 to 1867, though not at an ambassadorial level.Diplomatic ties lapsed in 1867 when Congress passed a ban on funding relations with the Holy See — a move fueled in part by anti-Catholic sentiment in the U.S. From then on, the Vatican and U.S. relied on personal envoys for over a century, including during World War II.It wasn’t until 1984 that President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II established full diplomatic ties.Archbishop Gallagher emphasized how far the American Catholic Church has come, citing the rise of Catholics to high office — from John F. Kennedy to the current vice president — and the growing intellectual contributions of U.S. theologians including Father John Courtney Murray, whose ideas on religious liberty shaped Vatican II.The Vatican diplomat described the new pope’s diverse family tree as “quintessentially American.” For many Americans gathered at Villa Richardson, the symbolism of Leo XIV’s election was deeply felt.“The election of the first pope from the USA represents a coming of age for the American Catholic Church,” Susan Hanssen, a history professor at the embassy party, told CNA.“A self-consciously immigrant Catholic community struggling with assimilation suddenly exploded with priestly vocations and prominent converts during the John Paul II revival. It was a fireworks display of confidence in the truth of the faith and its power to address the problems of modernity,” added Hanssen, who is currently teaching in the summer program for the University of Dallas, a Catholic university that has a Rome campus near Castel Gandolfo, the site of the pope’s summer residence.“Pope Leo, with his embrace of Leo XIII as his patron, represents this moment of maturity,” she said.Hamburgers, hot dogs, and a Marine color guard added American flavor to the evening. Despite the celebration, the embassy remains without a Senate-confirmed ambassador to the Holy See. President Donald Trump’s nominee, Brian Burch, was approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in May but faces a procedural roadblock in the full Senate after Democrats placed a hold on several State Department nominees over concerns about foreign aid funding. Until the Senate acts, the embassy continues under the leadership of Hochla, who took over as chargé d’affaires in July 2024.

Pope Leo XIV Moves to the ‘Second Vatican City,’ Castel Gandolfo-The Pontiff will stay on the hilltop Vatican property from the afternoon of July 6 to the afternoon of July 20. Part of the papal presence in Castel Gandolfo is the opportunity to pray the Sunday Angelus with Leo.The Vatican Gardens at Castel Gandolfo is located on the wooded slopes of the Alban Hills, overlooking the blue waters of a small volcanic crater lake.July 5, 2025

Two months into his pontificate, Pope Leo XIV will leave Rome to spend two weeks on a pontifical estate in the lakeside town of Castel Gandolfo, 18 miles south of the city, and sometimes known as the “second Vatican City.”The Pontiff will stay on the hilltop Vatican property “for a period of rest” from the afternoon of July 6 to the afternoon of July 20, the Vatican announced last month. Leo is scheduled to make public appearances from Castel Gandolfo on two Sundays, but otherwise, his public audiences and private audiences will be suspended during that time.Leo will also spend three days in Castel Gandolfo over the holiday weekend for the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary Aug. 15-17. Pope Leo’s stay on the 135-acre pontifical estate, which includes multiple properties, extensive gardens, and a working farm, marks the continuation of a centuries-old papal tradition of summer rest. While Leo’s immediate predecessor, Pope Francis, opted not to use the triangle-shaped territory as a summer retreat, Popes Benedict XVI and John Paul II famously escaped Rome’s intense heat by spending several months in recreation, study, and work in the hilltop town.According to Vatican News, Pope Leo made a quick visit to Castel Gandolfo on the afternoon of July 3 to check up on the renovations to Villa Barberini, where he will be staying.A tennis court has also been newly installed on the property for the tennis-loving pope, The New York Times reported. The pool is also reportedly receiving a refresh in anticipation of Leo’s arrival.Previous popes lived during their retreats in the pontifical palace of the estate, which is situated on the border of the town of Castel Gandolfo and the gardens, opening up onto Liberty Square. But in 2016, Pope Francis converted the papal palace of Castel Gandolfo into a museum. Two years prior he had opened the gardens to visitors. The palace and gardens will remain open to the public during Leo’s stay, since he will be living in a different palazzo on the grounds — the Villa Barberini. The ‘Second Vatican City’The papal ties to Castel Gandolfo date back to 1596; it became an official papal residence 30 years later. The Baroque architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini later added on to the property’s historic villa, first built by Emperor Domitian in the first century. The territory was conceded to the Holy See as an extraterritorial possession under the Lateran Pact of 1929. Since that time, Popes Pius XII, John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI all spent at least part of the summers there, where they would pray the Sunday Angelus and mingle with the townspeople. The popes would also occasionally receive important visitors. And the quiet atmosphere and scenic gardens provided a restorative space for reading, writing, and taking walks — or in John Paul II’s case, a lap in the property’s swimming pool. For Benedict XVI, the villa was a favorite summer getaway during his pontificate. He also chose to spend some time there after resigning the papacy.“Since 1628, the popes have lived in Castel Gandolfo. Some more, some less, but their presence has been constant. This is a city accustomed to the daily life of the pope,” Mayor Alberto de Angelis told ACI Prensa, CNA’s Spanish-language news partner, last month.Pray With Pope Leo XIV-Part of the papal presence in Castel Gandolfo is the opportunity to pray the Sunday Angelus with Leo. The public can see Pope Leo in Castel Gandolfo during the Angelus messages on July 13 and on July 20, which he will deliver from Liberty Square (Piazza della Libertà) in front of the pontifical palace. After nearly four weeks back at the Vatican, the pontiff will then return for three days to Castel Gandolfo, where he will recite the Angelus on Aug. 15 and Aug. 17.Visit Castel Gandolfo-Tickets to visit the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo or its gardens (Borgo Laudato Si’) can be booked on the official website of the Vatican Museums for a weekend or weekday. The town of Castel Gandolfo, which sits above the volcanic Lake Albano, is also a pleasant spot for a stroll. The town is part of the area south of Rome known as the Castelli Romani.Pope Francis “did a lot for the city, opening the doors of the papal residence and the gardens. ... But now, Leo XIV will give back to the city its daily connection with the Pope: the Angelus, the visits, the contact with the people. We want to experience all of that again,” Mayor de Angelis said. From Rome, Castel Gandolfo can be reached by train or car.

Pope Leo XIV Appoints New President to Lead Vatican’s Child Safeguarding Commission-Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop Thibault Verny of Chambéry as the new president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.July 5, 2025

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop Thibault Verny of Chambéry as the new president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. The prelate succeeds U.S.-born Cardinal Seán O’Malley, 81, the founding president of the safeguarding commission established by Pope Francis in 2014.  “I thank the Holy Father for my appointment as president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors,” Archbishop Verny said in a statement released on July 5. “I am honoured by the trust he has placed in me, fully aware of the grave and sacred task entrusted to the commission: to help the Church become ever more vigilant, accountable, and compassionate in her mission to protect the most vulnerable among us.”The new president praised his predecessor, saying Cardinal O’Malley has been “a moral compass” for the faithful and for people of good will: “His legacy is one of courageous fidelity to the Gospel and to the dignity of every human person.”Under Cardinal O’Malley’s leadership, the Vatican released its first report on the Church’s safeguarding efforts worldwide in October of 2024. Archbishop Verny was made a member of the pontifical commission by Pope Francis in 2022 and has since been active in the Vatican’s international safeguarding efforts in different countries, including the Central African Republic and the Ivory Coast. In his first statement as president of the pontifical commission, the French archbishop said the Church cannot “impose” safeguarding models nor “avoid hard conversations” about taboo topics in local traditions.“Our work must begin by listening — with humility, with respect, and with cultural intelligence,” the archbishop said on Saturday.Since 2022, Archbishop Verny has also chaired the French Bishops’ Conference’s council for preventing and combating child abuse while being a member of the Vatican commission.Between 2016 and 2023, he served as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Paris, where he was tasked with upholding the agreement between the archdiocese and local authorities to facilitate the reporting of abuse allegations to the civil courts. In 2023, he was appointed archbishop of Chambéry in southeast France.

JAMES 1:11
11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

The Hebrew noun accurately translated “oven” refers to a “baking oven” as distinct from a kiln or smelting furnace—both of which burn much hotter. (The Hebrew nouns for “kiln” or for “smelting furnace” are more likely to appear in contexts of God's wrath or judgment.)
21 They have roused me to jealousy with a non-god, they have exasperated me with their idols. In my turn I shall rouse them to jealousy with a non-people, I shall exasperate them with a stupid nation.
22 Yes, a fire has blazed from my anger, it will burn right down to the depths of Sheol; it will devour the earth and all its produce, it will set fire to the footings of the mountains.
23 I shall hurl disasters on them, on them I shall use up all my arrows.

6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.
7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

We shall have World Government, whether or not we like it. The only question is whether World Government will be achieved by conquest or consent.James Paul Warburg appearing before the Senate on 7th February 1950-Like a famous WWII Belgian General,Paul Henry Spock said in 1957:We need no commission, we have already too many. What we need is a man who is great enough to be able to keep all the people in subjection to himself and to lift us out of the economic bog into which we threaten to sink. Send us such a man. Be he a god or a devil, we will accept him.And today, sadly, the world is indeed ready for such a man.

LUKEWARM CHURCHES

REVELATION 3:15-19
15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I(GOD) will spue (VOMIT) thee out of my mouth.
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

U.S. News-What to know about the flash floods in Texas that killed at least 79 people-Updated 7:12 PM EDT, July 6, 2025

KERRVILLE, Texas (AP) — Flash floods in Texas killed dozens and left an unknown number of July Fourth visitors and campers missing, including many girls attending Camp Mystic. The devastation along the Guadalupe River, outside of San Antonio, has drawn a massive search effort as officials face questions over their preparedness and the speed of their initial actions. Here’s what to know about the deadly flooding, the colossal weather system that drove it in and around Kerr County, Texas, and ongoing efforts to identify victims.Massive rain hit at just the wrong time, in a flood-prone place-The floods grew to their worst at the midpoint of a long holiday weekend when many people were asleep. The Texas Hill Country in the central part of the state is naturally prone to flash flooding due to the dry dirt-packed areas where the soil lets rain skid along the surface of the landscape instead of soaking it up. Friday’s flash floods started with a particularly bad storm that dropped most of its 12 inches (30 centimeters) of rain in the dark early morning hours. After a flood watch notice midday Thursday, the National Weather Service office issued an urgent warning around 4 a.m. that raised the potential of catastrophic damage and a severe threat to human life. By at least 5:20 a.m., some in the Kerrville City area say water levels were getting alarmingly high. The massive rain flowing down hills sent rushing water into the Guadalupe River, causing it to rise 26 feet (8 meters) in just 45 minutes.Death toll is expected to rise and the number of missing is uncertain-Gov. Greg Abbott said there were 41 people confirmed to be unaccounted for across the state and more could be missing. In Kerr County, home to youth camps in the Texas Hill Country, searchers have found the bodies of 68 people, including 28 children, Sheriff Larry Leitha said Sunday afternoon. Fatalities in nearby counties brought the total number of deaths to 79 as of Sunday evening.Ten girls and a counselor were still unaccounted for at Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp along the river. For past campers, the tragedy turned happy memories into grief.Beyond the Camp Mystic campers unaccounted for, the number of missing from other nearby campgrounds and across the region had not been released.“We don’t even want to begin to estimate at this time,” Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice said Saturday, citing the likely influx of visitors during the July Fourth holiday.Officials face scrutiny over flash flood warnings-Survivors have described the floods as a “pitch black wall of death” and said they received no emergency warnings.Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly, who lives along the Guadalupe River, said Saturday that “ nobody saw this coming.” Various officials have referred to it as a “100-year-flood,” meaning that the water levels were highly unlikely based on the historical record. And records behind those statistics don’t always account for human-caused climate change. Though it’s hard to connect specific storms to a warming planet so soon after they occur, meteorologists say that a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture and allow severe storms to dump even more rain.Additionally, officials have come under scrutiny about why residents and youth summer camps along the river were not alerted sooner than 4 a.m. or told to evacuate.Officials noted that the public can grow weary from too many flooding alerts or forecasts that turn out to be minor.Kerr county officials said they had presented a proposal for a more robust flood warning system, similar to a tornado warning system, but that members of the public reeled at the cost.On Sunday, officials walked out of a news briefing after reporters asked them again about delays in alerts and evacuations.Monumental clearing and rebuilding effort-The flash floods have erased campgrounds and torn homes from their foundations.“It’s going to be a long time before we’re ever able to clean it up, much less rebuild it,” Kelly said Saturday after surveying the destruction from a helicopter.Other massive flooding events have driven residents and business owners to give up, including in areas struck last year by Hurricane Helene.President Donald Trump said he would likely visit the flood zone on Friday.

Death toll in central Texas flash floods rises to 79 as sheriff says 10 campers remain missing-By  JIM VERTUNO, JOHN SEEWER and JULIO CORTEZ-Updated 8:50 PM EDT, July 6, 2025

KERRVILLE, Texas (AP) — Families sifted through waterlogged debris Sunday and stepped inside empty cabins at Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp ripped apart by flash floods that washed homes off their foundations and killed at least 79 people in central Texas.Rescuers maneuvering through challenging terrain, high waters and snakes including water moccasins continued their desperate search for the missing, including 10 girls and a counselor from the camp. For the first time since the storms began pounding Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott said there were 41 people confirmed to be unaccounted for across the state and more could be missing. In Kerr County, home to Camp Mystic and other youth camps in the Texas Hill Country, searchers have found the bodies of 68 people, including 28 children, Sheriff Larry Leitha said in the afternoon. He pledged to keep searching until “everybody is found” from Friday’s flash floods. Ten other deaths were reported in Travis, Burnet, Kendall, Tom Green and Williamson counties, according to local officials. The death toll is certain to rise over the next few days, said Col. Freeman Martin of the Texas Department of Public Safety. The governor warned that additional rounds of heavy rains lasting into Tuesday could produce more life-threatening flooding, especially in places already saturated. As he spoke at a news conference in Austin, emergency alerts lit up mobile phones in Kerr County that warned of “High confidence of river flooding” and a loudspeaker near Camp Mystic urged people to leave. Minutes later, however, authorities on the scene said there was no risk.Families were allowed to look around the camp beginning Sunday morning. One girl walked out of a building carrying a large bell. A man, who said his daughter was rescued from a cabin on the highest point in the camp, walked a riverbank, looking in clumps of trees and under big rocks.A woman and a teenage girl, both wearing rubber waders, briefly went inside one of the cabins, which stood next to a pile of soaked mattresses, a storage trunk and clothes. At one point, the pair doubled over, sobbing before they embraced. One family left with a blue footlocker. A teenage girl had tears running down her face looking out the open window, gazing at the wreckage as they slowly drove away.Searching the disaster zone-While the families saw the devastation for the first time, nearby crews operating heavy equipment pulled tree trunks and tangled branches from the water as they searched the river. With each passing hour, the outlook of finding more survivors became even more bleak. Volunteers and some families of the missing who drove to the disaster zone searched the riverbanks despite being asked not to do so.Authorities faced growing questions about whether enough warnings were issued in an area long vulnerable to flooding and whether enough preparations were made.People comfort each other outside the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library in Kerville after heavy rainfall caused the Guadalupe River to flood and damage several communities in Central Texas, President Donald Trump signed a major disaster declaration Sunday for Kerr County, activating the Federal Emergency Management Agency to Texas. The president said he would likely visit Friday. “I would have done it today, but we’d just be in their way,” he told reporters before boarding Air Force One back to Washington after spending the weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. “It’s a horrible thing that took place, absolutely horrible.”The destructive, fast-moving waters rose 26 feet (8 meters) on the river in only 45 minutes before daybreak Friday, washing away homes and vehicles. The danger was not over as flash flood watches remained in effect and more rain fell in central Texas on Sunday.Searchers used helicopters, boats and drones to look for victims and to rescue people stranded in trees and from camps isolated by washed-out roads. Officials said more than 850 people were rescued in the first 36 hours.Prayers in Texas — and from the Vatican-Gov. Greg Abbott vowed that authorities will work around the clock and said new areas were being searched as the water receded. He declared Sunday a day of prayer for the state.“I urge every Texan to join me in prayer this Sunday — for the lives lost, for those still missing, for the recovery of our communities, and for the safety of those on the front lines,” he said in a statement. In Rome, Pope Leo XIV offered special prayers for those touched by the disaster. History’s first American pope spoke in English at the end of his Sunday noon blessing, “I would like to express sincere condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones, in particular their daughters who were in summer camp, in the disaster caused by the flooding of the Guadalupe River in Texas in the United States. We pray for them.”The hills along the Guadalupe River are dotted with century-old youth camps and campgrounds where generations of families have come to swim and enjoy the outdoors. The area is especially popular around the Independence Day holiday, making it more difficult to know how many are missing.Harrowing escapes from floodwaters-Survivors shared terrifying stories of being swept away and clinging to trees as rampaging floodwaters carried trees and cars past them. Others fled to attics inside their homes, praying the water wouldn’t reach them.At Camp Mystic, a cabin full of girls held onto a rope strung by rescuers as they walked across a bridge with water whipping around their legs.Among those confirmed dead were an 8-year-old girl from Mountain Brook, Alabama, who was at Camp Mystic, and the director of another camp up the road. Two school-age sisters from Dallas were missing after their cabin was swept away. Their parents were staying in a different cabin and were safe, but the girls’ grandparents were unaccounted for.Locals know the Hill Country as “ flash flood alley” but the flooding in the middle of the night caught many campers and residents by surprise even though there were warnings.Warnings came before the disaster-The National Weather Service on Thursday advised of potential flooding and then sent out a series of flash flood warnings in the early hours of Friday before issuing flash flood emergencies — a rare alert notifying of imminent danger. At the Mo-Ranch Camp in the community of Hunt, officials had been monitoring the weather and opted to move several hundred campers and attendees at a church youth conference to higher ground. At nearby Camps Rio Vista and Sierra Vista, organizers also had mentioned on social media that they were watching the weather the day before ending their second summer session Thursday.Authorities and elected officials have said they did not expect such an intense downpour, the equivalent of months’ worth of rain for the area.Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice said authorities are committed to a full review of the emergency response, including how the public was alerted to the storm threat.Trump, asked whether he was still planning to phase out the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said that was something “we can talk about later, but right now we are busy working.” He has previously said he wants to overhaul if not completely eliminate FEMA and has been sharply critical of its performance.Trump also was asked whether he planned to rehire any of the federal meteorologists who were fired this year as part of widespread government spending reductions.“I would think not. This was a thing that happened in seconds. Nobody expected it. Nobody saw it. Very talented people there, and they didn’t see it,” the president said.___Seewer reported from Toledo, Ohio. Syria fights 'catastrophic' fires for fourth day.

Damascus, July 6 (AFP) Jul 06, 2025-Syrian authorities said some 100 square kilometres (40 square miles) of forest had "turned to ash" in wildfires as firefighters from neighbouring Jordan arrived Sunday to battle a fourth day of blazes in the province of Latakia.Syrian emergency workers have faced tough conditions including high temperatures, strong winds, rugged mountainous terrain in the coastal province and the danger of explosive war remnants, in a country worn down by years of conflict and economic crisis. An AFP correspondent in Latakia's Rabiaa region saw emergency workers battling a blaze near homes, while vast swathes of forest and olive groves were burnt and smoke filled the air over a long distance.Jordanian civil defence teams crossed into Syria on Sunday morning, the Syrian ministry for emergencies and disaster management said, after Turkey sent assistance a day earlier.Minister Raed al-Saleh said on X that "hundreds of thousands of forest trees over an estimated area of around 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres) in 28 locations have turned to ash".He later decried "a real environmental disaster" at a press conference in the province.More than 80 teams including civil defence personnel have been helping battle the blaze, he said, noting local organisations and residents were also providing assistance, in addition to teams and firefighting aircraft from neighbouring Jordan and Turkey.Saleh said it would take days to declare the blazes completely extinguished once the fire was brought under control, calling them "catastrophic".- More assistance needed -Syria's defence ministry said the air force was assisting, publishing images of a helicopter collecting and dropping water.Jordan's public security directorate said in a statement that the "specialised firefighting teams from the civil defence... have been provided with all the modern equipment and machinery necessary to carry out their duties to the fullest extent".Swathes of forested area and farmland have burnt and some villages evacuated as the fires raged including near the Turkish border. The United Nations deputy envoy to Syria Najat Rochdi said in a statement Sunday on X that Damascus "needs more international assistance" to face the fires.A statement from the UN resident and humanitarian coordinator for Syria Adam Abdelmoula said that "UN teams are on the ground conducting urgent assessments to determine the scale of the disaster and to identify the most immediate humanitarian needs".Nearly seven months after the ousting of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, Syria is still reeling from more than a decade of civil war that ravaged the country's economy, infrastructure and public services. With man-made climate change increasing the likelihood and intensity of droughts and wildfires worldwide, Syria has also been battered by heatwaves and low rainfall. In June, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation told AFP that Syria had "not seen such bad climate conditions in 60 years".

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed:(CONFISCATED) their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

NOW LETS SEE WHAT IT MEANS FROM STRONGS EXAUSTIVE CONCORDANCE OF THE BIBLE. UNDER MARK PAGE 684.MARK UNDER MARK. THE OLD TESTAMENT IS UNDER HEBREW AND THE NEW TESTAMENT IS UNDER GREEK. SO WHEN WE LOOK UNDER REVELATION 13:16-17 WE SEE IT IS UNDER GREEK, SO WE GO TO GREEK IN THE BACK SECTION AND GO TO 5480 TO SEE WHAT IT SAYS THIS MARK WOULD BE. SO LETS GET TO IT.MARK IN STRONGS GREEK 5480 XAPAYUA CHARAGMA, KHAR-AG-MAH: FROM THE SAME AS 5482: A SCRATCH OR ETCHING, I.E STAMP (AS A BADGE OF SERVITUDE), OR SCULPTURED FIGURE-(STATUE):-GRAVEN, MARK FROM 5482 XAPAE CHARAX, KHAR-AX; FROM XAPAOOW CHARASSO (TO SHARPEN TO A POINT; AKIN TO 1125 THROUGH THE IDEA OF SCRATCHING); A STAKE, I.E (BYIMPL.) Latinstimulus, etc.; German stechen, English stick, sting, etc.; Curtius, § 226)), a mark pricked in or branded upon the body. According to ancient oriental usage, slaves and soldiers bore the name or stamp of their master or commander branded or pricked (cut) into their bodies to indicate what master or general they belonged to, and there were even some devotees who stamped themselves in this way with the token of their gods (cf. Deyling, Observations, iii., p. 423ff); hence, τά στίγματα τοῦ (κυρίου so Rec.) Ἰησοῦ, the marks of (the Lord) Jesus, which Paul in Galatians 6:17 says he bears branded on his body, are the traces left there by the perils, hardships, imprisonments, scourgings, endured by him for the cause of Christ, and which mark him as Christ's faithful and approved votary, servant, soldier (see Lightfoots Commentary on Galatians, the passage cited). Like a famous WWII Belgian General,Paul Henry Spock said in 1957:We need no commission, we have already too many. What we need is a man who is great enough to be able to keep all the people in subjection to himself and to lift us out of the economic bog into which we threaten to sink. Send us such a man. Be he a god or a devil, we will accept him.And today, sadly, the world is indeed ready for such a man.

Europe’s digital ID could inspire Global South’s next generation of DPI: TECH5-Jul 3, 2025, 4:26 pm EDT    | Masha Borak

Many countries have spent years building large-scale identity databases for issuing national documents, often based on biometric data. Governments are now trying to transform these identity registries into a “national asset” that could be put into the service of a country’s digitalization plans, as well as generate revenue, through digital public infrastructure (DPI).This is particularly visible in countries of the Global South, where infrastructure, both physical and digital, has been lacking. Helping them achieve this goal are companies such as TECH5, a Switzerland-based biometric and digital ID developer, which has been working with governments in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. The traditional role of companies such as TECH5 has been to build those national assets of identity information. The company has been developing iris, fingerprint and face recognition algorithms and large-scale matching platforms that drive national ID identity document issuance.Several years ago, the firm decided it was time to take the next step: using identity to unlock services offered by different industries.“That became known as digital public infrastructure,” TECH5 CEO and Co-founder Machiel Van der Harst told Biometric Update in a recent interview. The success of these systems relies on government trust anchorship – the credibility that national authorities provide when issuing verifiable credentials to citizens. This government backing ensures that digital credentials in mobile wallets are authentic, creating a foundation of trust that makes the entire system valuable, adds Mr. Van der Harst. Those credentials can then be used for services such as opening a bank account, transactions, signing contracts, accessing government services and more.Digital public infrastructure platforms are now being developed to support new services and business models. In essence, national digital identity credentials become a kickstarter for digital infrastructure, adds Ameya Bhagwat, Chief Revenue Officer at TECH5.“Once you start building that ecosystem, the participating parties realize very quickly the enormous potential it has in terms of new services,” says Mr. Bhagwat. “You can develop new types of transactions, new business models that can exploit the infrastructure, all to the benefit of the citizen, the relying parties, and the government.”One of the most talked-about services related to identity has been payments and other financial services. In Ethiopia, TECH5 has been working with payments giant Visa to provide technology for issuing bank credentials or a virtual card through a digital wallet that is co-developed with the NIDP called FaydaPass. The digital public infrastructure (DPI) program is meant to solve digital Know Your Customer (KYC) verification needs and help more users access financial services in the vast East African country.“From a government point of view, I think what they want is a way to generate revenue so that they do not have to rely on external funding sources and at the same time, build use cases that utilize the core ID of that nation as a trust anchor,” says Mr. Bhagwat.Different use cases can be established in a very short period, helping the country to improve the overall GDP level, he adds.Unlike India or Indonesia, which have implemented a centralized authentication system that leverages the biometric data in government databases, TECH5 has innovated and launched a decentralized identity, allowing the individual to manage their identity credentials without compromising security and privacy.Similar to Ethiopia, the company has applied the same decentralized digital public infrastructure approach while providing technology for building a digital ID program in Honduras. Bhagwat believes the company can replicate its success in other countries.TECH5 has chosen to build infrastructure that is fully compliant with European regulations and in line with the continent’s vision for digital identities, known as the EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. The reasoning behind this is the possibility of easily migrating experiences from the EU to the rest of the world.Europe has been testing use cases for the EUDI Wallet through Large-Scale Pilots (LSPs) that involve large players from governments, airports, universities and the private sector.“There’s a lot of work being done in large-scale pilots in Europe,” says van der Harst. “Europe is very, very active in defining services, standards, modalities and so forth.”This includes gaining experience in building and maintaining infrastructure, engaging relying parties, developing business models and making them self-sustaining.“This is not just a question of technology,” says Mr. van der Harst. “In order to make the system evolve, the actors within and the stakeholders within the system need to have a sustainable business model that will allow them to be involved today, but also involved tomorrow. The commercial entities need to be able to make some money at the end of the day. Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense.”This is a sponsored post. For information about advertising, please contact us.

Govt ID systems enable financial inclusion, and without oversight, surveillance-Jul 5, 2025, 11:14 am EDT    | Chris Burt

Biometric databases held by governments form the basis of traditional, centralized digital ID systems, but these system require careful management and oversight to avoid a raft of potential risks to privacy and other rights. The biggest industry news of the week on Biometric Update is the completed deal for IN Groupe to acquire Idemia, which brings in technologies to the former that strengthen its ability to deliver systems that ensure control over ID data and sovereignty for the customer.Top biometrics news of the week-The acquisition of Idemia Smart Identity by IN Groupe, solely owned by the French government, has been completed, with the price tag estimated around a billion euros. The sale creates the largest company in the digital identity market, and integrating Idemia’s biometrics and other technologies gives IN Groupe a comprehensive portfolio to go with its even more-extensive global reach.National ID systems can empower governments to do amazing things.India is using Aadhaar biometrics to carry out YC checks on 800 million food aid beneficiaries.Namibia wants to improve financial inclusion, particularly amongst its rural population, by enabling instant digital payments. The official in charge of setting up the system tells Biometric Update that it will rely on the national registration database as its source of identity truth. But with scale and complexity come a variety of concerns, including over surveillance and limited oversight.ICE’s Mobile Fortify app for real-time identity verification in the field with face and contactless fingerprint biometrics has rolled out. ICE agents can use the app to check the biometrics of suspected illegal immigrants against CBP’s TVS database and DHS’s IDENT. A formal announcement of the rules for using the app are pending.A major funding increase for mobile biometrics tools for ICE is included in the “One Big Beautiful Bill” passed by U.S. lawmakers this week. The signature piece of legislation for President Donald Trump also strengthens CBP’s authority to deploy facial recognition at ports of entry. But responsibility for IDENT has become contentious within the U.S. federal government, as sources say the executive branch is considering moving OBIM under CBP. The mandate of the system and its rules for use could change, and may have already, gives that officials from the advisory body known as DOGE have apparently gaining operational access to the massive government biometric databases without legal oversight.A tool used by America’s federal government to determine program eligibility and repurposed for checking voter eligibility has integrated databases from several agencies and now functions as a de facto national citizenship index. The system has also been upgraded to support batch queries, which will presumably be covered in the new or updated SORN when it is published. And as mDLs take off, the “No Phone Home” data privacy controversy, topic of the latest episode of the Biometric Update podcast, heats up.Somalia has launched the PISCES border control system, which is backed by the U.S. government and built with biometric technology from Booz Allen Hamilton. Somalia’s new border control system, which is live in 23 countries around the world, including several in East Africa, was developed to screen travelers against terrorism watchlists.CBP has launched the Enhanced Passenger Processing system, which uses iProov biometrics for screening U.S. citizens arriving on international flights, from a pilot to an operational program at a dozen airports. CBP biometrics have also been deployed at the CBX land border crossing, and TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is expanding with three airlines.Around the world, governments are racing ahead with digital ID plans, and in a couple of notable cases, turning to neighboring countries to help.India’s NISG has issued an RFP on behalf of Sri Lanka for the latter’s national digital identity system. The partners are seeking a system integrator for the MOSIP-based SL-UDI, and taking bids until August 8. Once the system is set up, Sri Lanka plans to hire a locally managed service provider to maintain it.Switzerland is adopting chip-based biometric ID cards, like the rest of Europe, despite not being an EU member, so that its citizens can enjoy free movement with the continental bloc. The new Swiss IDs are expected by the end of next year, and work on them is underway, though no supplier has been announced yet.Niger has chosen Libya-based Al Itissan Al-Jadeed for a public-private partnership to upgrade the country’s biometric national ID system. Agreements have been signed for the delivery of a national digital ID and new passports. The public debut of the GOV.UK App came this week with the launch of public beta version. An AI chatbot is among features coming soon, and tech secretary Peter Kyle says the design is unfinished, but it is already integrated with 16 government services, half a dozen more than GOV.UK Verify every got to.With all of this activity, an active civil society is especially important right now.Beruku has signed on to support the next phase of work on Women in Identity’s Code of Conduct, the organization announced in its latest newsletter. Phase 4 is the crafting of guiding principles for the code. Please let us know about any podcasts, panels or other content we should pass along to those in biometrics and the digital identity community, either in the comments below or through social media.

CBP’s biometric border dragnet and the corporate state behind it-Jul 4, 2025, 4:38 pm EDT    | Anthony Kimery

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is on the verge of reissuing a sweeping regulatory overhaul that will usher in a new nationwide biometric surveillance regime. One that could also see the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) biometric database being put under CBP authority.Beyond the regulatory text lies a broader convergence of state surveillance, Silicon Valley influence, and anti-immigrant enforcement priorities that will be fueled by a budget that is set to dramatically expand CBP’s mandate and bankrolls the companies that benefit from it. It also gives credence to allegations – first reported by Biometric Update – that CBP will be given authority over DHS’s Office of Biometric Identity Management (OBIM).At the core of this new regulation is facial recognition technology, which will be embedded into CBP’s Traveler Verification Service (TVS) and applied across all air, sea, and land ports of entry and exit, marking a revival and formalization of Trump-era ambitions to track every non-U.S. citizen who crosses the country’s borders. TVS is a cloud-based facial recognition system designed to automate identity verification across all travel modes. The regulation appears to closely align with a 2020 Trump DHS proposal to collect the biometrics of all aliens entering and leaving the U.S. – a regulation that was shelved by the Biden administration in 2021 following the first round of public comments. While the stated intent behind the reg’s revival is the need to track every non-U.S. citizen who crosses the country’s borders, TVS will also capture the face of every U.S. citizen in the process, which is a technological capability that CPB has been working on for some time. The regulation, RIN 1651-AB12, was submitted by DHS to the White House’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on July 3. If approved, it will be issued as an interim final rule – an administrative shortcut that enables DHS to begin enforcement immediately without first receiving public comment.Under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA), agencies can bypass the normal rulemaking process in specific cases using the “good cause” exception provision, which states that “when the agency for good cause finds … that notice and public procedure thereon are impracticable, unnecessary, or contrary to the public interest,” a final rule can be issued without public comment and review. An interim final rule is typically used by federal agencies when there is an urgent need to act swiftly, such as in situations involving national security, public health, or safety, or that delaying the rule to solicit public input would be contrary to the public interest or cause undue harm.DHS has not articulated why it wants to bypass the public comment and review process in this instance, but it isn’t the first time. The department has issued interim final rules before regarding immigration, visa processing, penalties, and procedural delays. In June, it published an IFR concerning civil penalties under the Immigration and Nationality Act. A full count would require systematically reviewing DHS entries in the Unified Agenda of Federal Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions and the Federal Register.Once enacted, the new rule will remove existing geographic limitations on biometric data collection at ports of entry. The TVS system, which compares live facial images to those stored in passports, visas, or CBP’s own databases, will become the backbone of exit and entry processing for all non-citizens, with the stated aim of identifying visa overstays and monitoring voluntary departures. The regulation also includes an aggressive expansion of surveillance at land crossings. Every occupant of every car exiting the United States will be photographed, a practice CBP argues will allow it to confirm departures and reduce so-called “absconder” populations. Fingerprint scans and facial imagery will be captured and routed through DHS’ biometric database systems, including the OBIM-managed Automated Biometric Identification System (IDENT) – DHS’ central biometric database – raising alarm among privacy advocates who warn of the potential for errors, racial bias, and unchecked retention of sensitive data. While CBP claims it will delete images of U.S. citizens and lawful residents within 14 days, non-immigrant aliens may have their data stored for up to 75 years. In practice, opt-out provisions remain unclear, and their enforcement spotty, especially for those unaware of their rights.Civil liberties organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, have voiced strong opposition to the rule, citing the inaccuracy of facial recognition for people of color and the lack of robust oversight mechanisms. There are also concerns about how “voluntary participation” is defined when travelers may face significant delays or secondary screening if they object to being scanned. Reports by the Government Accountability Office and the Electronic Privacy Information Center have documented the risks of the technology’s deployment, particularly when agencies like CBP act without firm legal boundaries or transparent public accountability. While the legal foundation for the biometric exit-entry system was laid decades ago in the 2002 Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act and the 2004 Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, what’s unfolding now is less about fulfilling congressional mandates and more about entrenching a surveillance-first approach to immigration enforcement.DHS began pilot testing TVS as early as 2017, citing its traveler-friendly convenience and scalability. Since then, it has steadily expanded its use at select airports and crossings, now seeking to eliminate the “pilot” designation altogether. But the renewed push to scale biometric surveillance nationally is not happening in a vacuum. It coincides with the passage of President Donald Trump’s sweeping budget reconciliation bill – known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill” – which was passed along party lines and allocates hundreds of billions to immigration enforcement and border technologies.Under this bill, CBP’s $23 billion budget for 2024 would nearly triple, with tens of billions allocated for biometric and AI-powered surveillance tools. This is not merely a funding measure—it is a legislative framework that consolidates surveillance power in the hands of both the state and a select few private corporations. The 940-page bill does much more than allocate dollars; it would codify a vision of the national security state where biometric surveillance, AI, and immigration enforcement converge at unprecedented scale.Among the beneficiaries are Anduril Industries and Palantir Technologies, two companies whose founders have deep ties to Trump and the tech-libertarian wing of Silicon Valley. Anduril, founded by Oculus creator and Trump donor Palmer Luckey, stands to gain significantly from the bill’s $2.8 billion set-aside for surveillance towers and sensors along the southern and maritime borders.Palantir, co-founded by Peter Thiel, is primed to receive a sizable share of the $700 million that is earmarked for ICE’s information technology systems. These companies offer platforms that fuse biometric data with AI-driven analytics, enabling real-time tracking and profiling of immigrants, refugees, and even U.S. citizens caught in the expanding data dragnet.U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is already preparing to move forward with a sole-source contract to Palantir for the development of the next generation of its Investigative Case Management system, which includes biometrics for migrant identification. ICE has quietly emerged as the operational nucleus of a vast, fragmented, and increasingly automated biometric surveillance architecture across the U.S.IDENT is a key component of this infrastructure. IDENT aggregates and shares data with not only ICE, but also the departments of Justice, State, and Defense, as well as local law enforcement. This interoperability blurs jurisdictional boundaries and enables broader surveillance of American communities. Despite documented flaws in facial recognition and pattern-matching AI, agencies continue to deploy these tools, now with even greater funding and fewer constraints. The budget bill’s investments extend beyond immigration. Billions more are set aside for “emerging technology ecosystems,” including quantum computing, advanced cloud data platforms, and next-generation AI. These provisions reflect a strategic alignment between federal agencies and Big Tech, which now occupy a central role in defining what constitutes “national security.”The line between corporate interests and government imperatives is fast eroding. Decisions about who is surveilled, detained, or denied entry are increasingly made with the aid of private-sector algorithms, often deployed without rigorous testing or ethical review. This public-private collusion is perhaps most visible in the AI regulation moratorium that was almost included in the same budget package. The provision would have prohibited states from enacting their own laws to regulate AI systems, effectively giving tech corporations free rein to develop and deploy technologies with minimal oversight. While a 99-1 Senate vote narrowly removed the moratorium from the bill after fierce public backlash, its brief presence in the legislative text illustrates the deep entanglement between regulatory capture and technological expansion. In communities across the country, the effects are already being felt. States like Tennessee, Texas, and Arizona have seen sharp increases in biometric surveillance at public events, transportation hubs, and even public assistance offices. At the same time, localities attempting to resist the expansion of data centers – critical infrastructure for the AI and biometric ecosystems – face legal and financial pressure to yield land, water, and tax incentives to tech giants. In this context, CBP’s biometric tracking regulation cannot be viewed as an isolated policy initiative. It is a keystone in a much larger architecture that fuses immigration enforcement, mass surveillance, and corporate profit. It grants DHS and its contractors unprecedented reach into the daily lives of millions, creating a data-fueled feedback loop that makes it easier to monitor, police, and control. It also emerges a rational reason behind concerns that OBIM could be turned over to CBP.Facial recognition at the border may begin with non-citizens, but the data systems built to support it do not recognize the same limitations. The architecture being deployed – powered by Palantir algorithms and Anduril hardware, underwritten by federal dollars – presents a profound civil liberties challenge for everyone within U.S. jurisdiction. As the interim final rule nears approval and CBP prepares for its biometric rollout, the question is not just who will be scanned, but what kind of society is being engineered through this convergence of technology, policy, and power.

Face liveness detection mandatory for new Tinder users in California, Canada-Online dating company moves to cut down number of bots on hookup service-Jun 30, 2025, 12:08 pm EDT    | Joel R. McConvey

New Tinder users in California are now required to provide face biometrics through a video selfie on setting up an account, according to a report from Axios.Biometrics are not new for Tinder. Wonder Match Group has been using photo verification via real-time selfies since 2020. Various expansions have seen it deploy the system, powered by biometrics from FaceTec, across the U.S., UK, Brazil, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia. But whereas that system, branded as ID Check, verifies age and identity against a government-issued ID, the new Face Check system (also a FaceTec product) “confirms the person is real and present and whether their face matches their profile photos,” and “also checks if the face is used across multiple accounts.”In other words, it performs face liveness detection and scans for matches on other accounts, as a way to prevent the creation of accounts using deepfaked identities. Match Group’s head of trust and safety Yoel Roth tells Axios it’s “really meant to be about confirming that this person is a real, live person and not a bot or a spoofed account.”Face Check is reportedly already live in Colombia and Canada (excluding Quebec). Roth calls early results from those jurisdictions promising, and says California is seen as an ideal test market in the U.S. due to its size, demographics and robust online safety and privacy laws. But the move may be part of a larger scramble to find a solution to sinking revenues for Tinder and its cohort of “match” sites. Match Group recently cut 13 percent of staff last month after declines in revenue and paying users. The sector is falling on tough times as paying users look elsewhere for love or thrills; in the UK, Ofcom’s 2024 Online Nation report shows use of the most popular dating apps dropped by nearly 16 percent between 2023 and 2024.The industry has looked to AI features as a potential solution. However, Match Group also has contingency in its additional holdings: in addition to Tinder, it also owns Match.com, Meetic, OkCupid, Hinge, Plenty of Fish, OurTime and other global dating brands.

London police mark 1K arrests through live facial recognition-Still no unified rulebook for use-Jul 4, 2025, 1:00 pm EDT    | Masha Borak

The UK’s largest police force has announced a new milestone of more than 1,000 wanted criminals arrested thanks to live facial recognition (LTR) since the start of 2024.The London Metropolitan Police Service said on Friday that 773 individuals have been charged or cautioned. These offenders may have otherwise remained at large, posing a threat to the public, the force said in a release.“[LTR] is not only saving our officers’ valuable time but delivering faster, more accurate results to catch criminals – helping us be more efficient than ever before,” says Lindsey Chiswick, Met Police director of performance and national lead for Facial Recognition. The arrests included more than 100 individuals suspected of serious violence against women and girls. Since the start of 2024, 93 registered sex offenders have been identified by the technology. The police service published several case studies, including 73-year-old David Cheneler, a registered sex offender who was found to be with a six-year-old girl in breach of a court order.Live facial recognition also helped officers catch offenders breaking their conditions, which otherwise may have gone unnoticed. In London, a breach of conditions has been identified 21 percent of the time, according to the police. However, critics of the technology, such as privacy campaign group Big Brother Watch, say that arrests made with the technology represent just 0.15 percent of all London arrests during that time.“Criminals should be brought to justice, but papering over the cracks of broken policing with Orwellian tech is not the solution,” says Madeleine Stone, senior advocacy officer at Big Brother Watch. The organization also highlights that facial recognition remains dangerously unregulated in the UK.The country does not have a single law governing the technology, instead relying on a patchwork of different legislation. Despite this, the country has seen a sharp increase in live and retrospective facial recognition deployments both by law enforcement and the private sector.Earlier this week, the UK government announced it was considering introducing new legislation to back the use of facial recognition by police. The Biometrics Institute called for unified regulation for the UK’s use of facial recognition in public spaces earlier this year and the Ada Lovelace Institute called for a dedicated regulator for biometrics use in the UK in May.Meanwhile, UK police forces continue to deploy the technology without a unified rulebook. On Thursday, Northamptonshire Police announced a LTR-powered, four-day policing operation for the 2025 Formula 1 Qatar Airways British Grand Prix in Silverstone. More than 480,000 people are expected to attend the race this year.Police have been deploying the technology at the sporting event for the past two years, scanning the faces of crowds and matching their biometrics against a predetermined watchlist. The list includes suspects wanted for offences and those with an outstanding warrant for arrest. Images and biometric data of people who do not trigger the system’s alert are automatically deleted.

DR DOCTORION-ANGEL OF THE MIDEAST
"The angel showed me that the United Nations shall be broken in pieces because of the crisis in the Middle East. There shall be no more United Nations. The angel with the sickle shall reap the harvest.

FIRST ANGEL: ASIA
But the angel said: "Millions will die in China and in India. Nation will be against nation, brother against brother. Asians will fight each other. Nuclear weapons shall be used, killing millions."Twice I heard the words, "Catastrophic! Catastrophic!"Then the angel said, "Financial crisis will come to Asia. I will shake the world."I was trembling while the angel was speaking.
SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST
Then I saw that the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used in harvesting. The second angel said: "Harvest time has come in Israel and the countries all the way to Iran."I saw those countries in a few split seconds."All of Turkey and those [inaudible] countries that have refused me and refused my message of love shall hate each other and kill one another."I saw the angel raise the sickle and come down on all the Middle East countries. I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere. Sudden destruction – men destroying one another. I heard these words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come."

Jeremiah 6:14
14 They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

Isaiah 57:21
21 There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.

1 Thessalonians 5:3
3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

Ephesians 2:2
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air,(LIBERAL GODLESS AIR WAVES) the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

EZEK 39:11-16
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog (300 MILLION RUSSIA,GERMANY, IRAN, TURKEY, ARAB MUSLIMS) a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: (IN THE JORDAN VALLEY) and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
13 Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord God.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment, (NUCLEAR SPECIALISTS) passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man's bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog.
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.

DAMASCUS DESTROYED

ISAIAH 17:1,3,13-14
17 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
3 The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the Lord of hosts.
13 The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.
14 And behold at eveningtide trouble; and before the morning he is not. This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us.

JEREMIAH 49:23-27
23 Concerning Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.
24 Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.
25 How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!
26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the Lord of hosts.
27 And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Benhadad.(PALACES OF DAMASCUS)

China launches international association to boost global access to deep space research-by Riko Seibo.

Tokyo, Japan (SPX) Jul 02, 2025-China will inaugurate the International Deep Space Exploration Association (IDSEA) next Monday, marking its first international academic body dedicated to aerospace. Based in Hefei, Anhui province, the association is designed to foster global collaboration, with an emphasis on empowering developing countries to access and advance deep-space technologies. The IDSEA, co-founded by the Hefei-based Deep Space Exploration Laboratory and four other institutions, will promote scientific research in areas such as lunar exploration, planetary science, and asteroid studies. Officials describe it as an inclusive platform aiming to broaden participation in space exploration."Our goal is to involve as many developing countries as possible," said Wang Zhongmin, director of the international cooperation center at the Deep Space Exploration Laboratory. "By launching small yet meaningful initiatives - like CubeSat projects and scientific training programs - we aim to help these nations acquire sophisticated technologies that were once beyond their reach."Deep-space efforts have historically been the domain of a few technologically advanced countries, primarily due to the high financial and technical barriers. "Many nations face a monopoly on deep space capabilities," Wang noted. "We must ensure these technologies serve all of humanity."China's rapid rise in space science has been matched by its willingness to collaborate internationally. In April, seven institutions from six countries - including the US, UK, France, Germany, Japan, and Pakistan - received authorization to study lunar samples brought back by the Chang'e 5 mission.Additionally, China has extended invitations for international involvement in its upcoming Mars initiatives. The Tianwen-3 mission, scheduled for around 2028, aims to retrieve Martian samples and search for signs of life. If successful, it would mark the first Mars sample return and one of the most ambitious undertakings in space exploration since the Apollo era.

Erdogan confident Turkey to be readmitted to US F-35 programme in stages.

Istanbul, July 5 (AFP) Jul 05, 2025-President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expressed confidence Turkey would be readmitted to the US F-35 programme and receive the stealth fighter jets in line with "an agreement" with US President Donald Trump.Washington booted Turkey out of its F-35 programme in 2019 and a year later imposed sanctions on Ankara over its purchase of an S-400 Russian surface-to-air missile defence system, but since Trump's return to office, the two NATO allies appear keen to end the dispute."I believe that Mr. Trump will remain loyal to the agreement we made. I think the F-35s will be delivered to Turkey step-by-step during his term," Erdogan said while returning from Azerbaijan, the Anadolu state news agency reported Saturday. He gave no further details about the agreement but said the move was "part of a geo-economic revolution.""The F-35 issue is not only a military technology issue for us, but also a strong partnership issue in international platforms such as NATO," he added. The sanctions on Turkey's defence sector have soured ties between the two allies but last weekend, Washington's envoy to Ankara Tom Barrack said they were likely to be over "by the year's end".Trump and Erdogan would instruct their top diplomats to "figure out the way and end it and Congress will support an intelligent solution", he told Anadolu on Sunday. In March, Erdogan spoke to Trump about the need to finalise a deal to let Turkey buy US F-16 fighter planes and be readmitted to the development programme for F-35 warplanes. And last month, he said he saw an end in sight to the sanctions, saying Turkey had seen them eased under Trump.

US deploys 200 Marines to Florida to assist immigration tasks.

Washington, July 4 (AFP) Jul 04, 2025-Around 200 Marines were deployed to Florida on Thursday to provide administrative and logistical support for immigration enforcement raids happening in the southeastern state. The deployment is the first round of several requested by the US Department of Homeland Security to help its Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency facilitate President Donald Trump's migrant crackdown, a top priority of his second term.Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth approved the mobilization of up to 700 troops, with additional deployments planned for the southern US states of Louisiana and Texas, officials said."Service members participating in this mission will perform strictly non-law enforcement duties within ICE facilities," US Northern Command said in a statement."Their roles will focus on administrative and logistical tasks, and they are specifically prohibited from direct contact with individuals in ICE custody or involvement in any aspect of the custody chain."Earlier this week, Trump toured a new migrant detention center in Florida dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz" that can house up to 1,000 people. The deployment also comes a month after the Republican leader sent 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines to Los Angeles, California, in response to protests against immigration raids conducted by ICE.California officials heavily criticized Trump over his use of the military, saying it escalated protests that local law enforcement could have handled. The Trump administration insisted the deployment was necessary to quell unrest and protect federal property and personnel.

Supporters of Palestine Action, banned under UK terror laws, arrested at London protest-Campaign organization says 27 detained for holding cardboard signs in support of anti-Israel group designated a terror organization after breaking into and vandalizing UK airbase-By AFP and ToI Staff Today, 6:42 pm-JUL 5,25

Police on Saturday arrested protesters in London for supporting the pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel activist group Palestine Action, which was on Friday banned by the UK parliament under anti-terror laws.“Officers are responding to a protest in support of Palestine Action in Parliament Square. The group is now proscribed, and expressing support for them is a criminal offense. Arrests are being made,” the Metropolitan Police wrote on X.Campaign group Defend Our Juries said in a press release that a group of 27 people, including a priest and a number of health professionals, had been arrested for offenses under the Terrorism Act.They were holding cardboard signs, saying: “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action,” added the campaign group. Israel has denied all accusations of genocide.Police warned on Friday that expressing support for Palestine Action would be a criminal offense after the ban kicked in at midnight.“This includes chanting, wearing clothing, or displaying articles such as flags, signs, or logos,” said the force.A spokesperson for Defend Our Juries said: “We commend the Counter Terrorism police for their decisive action in protecting the people of London from some cardboard signs opposing the genocide in Gaza and expressing support for those taking action to prevent it.”The terror designation cleared parliament on Thursday, with a court challenge by Huda Ammori, who helped found Palestine Action in 2020, to try to stop it from becoming law, failing on Friday.Judge Martin Chamberlain ruled against Ammori’s bid to pause the ban, meaning the proscription of Palestine Action came into force Saturday.Husain asked for a temporary pause until Monday pending an appeal, but Chamberlain refused, saying: “You are going to have to trouble the Court of Appeal tonight.”Ammori said in a statement: “We are seeking an urgent appeal to try to prevent a dystopian nightmare of the government’s making.”The government announced last week it would ban Palestine Action under the Terrorism Act 2000, days after activists from the group broke into a Royal Air Force base and damaged two planes in protest against what the group says is Britain’s support for Israel. Two aircraft at the base were sprayed with red paint, causing an estimated £7 million ($9.55 million) in damage.Four Palestine Action activists were remanded in custody on Thursday after appearing in court over the incident.Palestine Action has condemned the terror designation as an attack on free speech.Proscription would make it a crime to be a member of or to support the group, with a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.

Military says it now controls 65% of Gaza Strip-Netanyahu, IDF chief said to clash in stormy meeting over plan to displace Gazans-‘Who will govern 2 million people?’: Eyal Zamir reportedly expresses incredulity as cabinet demands IDF move population to south of the Strip, lay siege to north-By Stav Levaton-and ToI Staff 4 July 2025, 11:40 pm

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clashed with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir at a cabinet meeting Thursday night after the general appeared skeptical about a plan to move Gazan civilians to the south of the Strip and lay siege to its north, Hebrew media reported Friday.According to quotes from the closed-door meeting reported by Channel 12 and Ynet, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich accused Zamir of not following orders and leading to a stalemate in Gaza.Zamir was said to have responded: “You always say there is a stalemate in the Strip. There is no stalemate in the Strip — we’re doing exactly what you tasked us with. I suggest people watch what they say about us, supposedly not doing what we were tasked with. You certainly don’t need to be reminded that we have soldiers dying in battle.”Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly responded that the IDF needs to “work on a wide-scale evacuation plan of the population to the south of the Strip.”Smotrich, who reportedly accused Zamir on Sunday of seeking to end the war by warning that it endangers the hostages, was said to have added: “And lay siege to the north [of Gaza]. That way we’ll topple Hamas in no time.”“Do you want a military government [in Gaza]? Who will govern 2 million people?” Zamir asked, according to the unsourced reports.Netanyahu was said to have yelled in response: “The IDF and the State of Israel. I don’t want a military government, but I want to move [Gazans] to a large civilian area. [I’m] not willing to leave Hamas behind in any way.”Netanyahu reportedly said the alternative to the evacuation plan was to capture the entire Strip, including areas the IDF has not operated in until now for fear of harming the hostages.“The alternative to evacuation to the south is to run over the whole Strip and capture all of it, and that means killing the hostages, which I don’t want and am not prepared to do,” he was quoted as saying.Zamir reportedly replied that the evacuation plan could lead to a loss of control.“We need to talk about this. We have not agreed to this. To control these people who are hungry and angry could lead to a loss of control and as a result of that loss of control they could turn on the IDF, ” said Zamir, according to Ynet and Channel 12.Netanyahu reportedly dismissed Zamir’s concern, saying, “Prepare an evacuation plan — I want to see it when I return from Washington.”The prime minister is scheduled to meet at the White House with US President Donald Trump on Monday. Trump is expected to announce a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas during the visit. Netanyahu is set to return Thursday. On Wednesday evening, Netanyahu said Israel’s aims of both defeating Hamas and freeing the hostages were still attainable: “I am telling you, there will be no Hamas,” he said during a visit to the Eilat Ashkelon Pipeline Company headquarters in Ashkelon. “There will be no Hamastan. We are not going back to that. It is over. We will release all our hostages.”Any suggestions that those two goals are in opposition are “nonsense,” he added, saying that “it works together. We will complete this together, contrary to what they say. We will eliminate them to the end.”Zamir said last week that the IDF would soon “reach the lines” set for it by the government in the latest Gaza offensive, which began in May and sought to conquer 75% of the Strip.Analysts said the announcement was meant to signal to the government the need to decide whether to move forward with a hostage-ceasefire deal or prepare for the IDF to establish military rule in the Strip. On Friday, the military said it had attained operational control of roughly 65% of the enclave. The military also said it eliminated more than 100 Hamas operatives over the past week, including senior commander Hakem al-Issa.Since the Hamas onslaught of October 7, 2023, which sparked the war in Gaza, the Israeli Air Force has struck over 7,500 terror targets, including weapons sites, tunnels and rocket launchers, according to the IDF.The military said its campaign will continue in pursuit of its war goals and the protection of Israeli civilians.Netanyahu has publicly vowed to keep fighting until Hamas is vanquished, but is reportedly working with Trump on a plan that would end the war, re-commit Israel to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and normalize Israeli-Saudi and Israeli-Syrian relations.Ben Gvir and Smotrich reject outright any Israeli withdrawal from Gaza or hint at Palestinian statehood. On Wednesday, Hebrew media reported that Ben Gvir had reached out to Smotrich to form a united front in the government against the hostage-ceasefire deal being promoted by the White House. However, a spokesman for the finance minister denied any cooperation and accused Ben Gvir of playing a “game” with leaks to the media.

Proximity talks could start Sunday, if gaps seen bridgeable-Hamas responds ‘positively’ to truce offer, but with reservations; says ready to start talks-Source details differences on key issues, as Hamas aims to prevent Israel from resuming war, wants to lift curbs on UN aid and seeks a more significant IDF withdrawal-By Jacob Magid-Today, 2:04 am-JUL 5,25

Hamas announced Friday that it had submitted a “positive” response to the latest proposal for a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release agreement, adding that it was prepared to “immediately” begin proximity talks with Israel to close remaining gaps. At the same time, a source involved in mediation efforts told The Times of Israel that the terror group’s reply included three reservations on core issues, leaving significant hurdles to overcome.“The movement has delivered its response to the brotherly mediators, which was characterized by a positive spirit. Hamas is fully prepared, with all seriousness, to immediately enter a new round of negotiations on the mechanism for implementing this framework,” Hamas said in a statement, which made no mention of any reservations. However, the source involved in the mediation effort stated that Hamas wants clearer language regarding the possibility that negotiations on a permanent ceasefire may not be completed by the end of the proposed 60-day truce. The text that was presented to Hamas states that the 60-day ceasefire can extend, so long as the sides are negotiating in good faith. But the source said Hamas wants the latter condition dropped, viewing it as a window Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will exploit to resume the war, as he did in March, collapsing an agreement reached in January before its second stage. Accordingly, the source said Hamas wants the proposal to state that talks on a permanent ceasefire will continue until an agreement is reached — something Israel has opposed, fearing that Hamas will drag out the talks indefinitely.Another Hamas reservation pertains to aid, which the terror group wants to fully resume through mechanisms backed by the United Nations and other international aid organizations, the source said, noting that assistance could still flow through the controversial, US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. However, the source clarified that Hamas would not accept the current system whereby Israel severely restricts the amount of UN aid allowed in.An average of fewer than 70 trucks of aid have been entering Gaza each day since Israel lifted a blockade on the Strip after 78 days. International organizations say hundreds of trucks are needed daily to address the dire need in the Strip. The extent of the crisis has been highlighted by the chaotic, deadly scenes at and near GHF distribution sites, which thousands of Palestinians have been willing to walk long distances to reach, while coming under acknowledged IDF fire and reported Hamas fire, in order to get food. The third reservation in Hamas’s response pertains to the withdrawal of Israeli forces during the truce, the source said, with the terror group demanding that the IDF retreat to positions it maintained before the collapse of the previous ceasefire in March. All three reservations are likely to receive pushback from Israel, given that Netanyahu has insisted from the get-go that Israel maintain the ability to resume fighting, rather than agree up-front to a permanent ceasefire. Jerusalem has argued that ending the war would leave Hamas in power and able to regroup, though critics of the government have maintained that Israel has already sufficiently dismantled the terror organization; opinion polls have shown some two-thirds of Israelis supporting a deal that would secure the release of all hostages at the price of ending the war.Israel is also opposed to aid mechanisms other than GHF, arguing that Hamas has proved able to commandeer large quantities of humanitarian assistance.Israel has also taken over large swaths of territory, including the so-called Morag Corridor in southern Gaza, where it will likely push to keep its troops, similar to the Philadelphi Corridor, which straddles the Egypt-Gaza border.Potential proximity talks-The source, familiar with the mediation effort, said that despite Hamas’s reservations, they expected the sides to still be able to move ahead with proximity talks, which could take place in Doha as soon as Sunday. But US special envoy to the Mideast Steve Witkoff had been pushing for Hamas to accept the mediators’ proposal as is, so that only a small number of issues would need to be raised during proximity talks. Those included the number and the identities of the Palestinian prisoners to be released in the deal and the maps marking the withdrawal of Israeli troops. It wasn’t immediately clear whether Israel and the US would deem Hamas’s reservations as limited enough to proceed with proximity talks. A nearly identical dynamic unfolded when a previous hostage deal proposal was submitted by Witkoff in late May. Then, the US envoy blasted the Hamas response as unacceptable, and proximity talks were not held.US President Donald Trump has been pushing for a deal since he brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Iran on June 24, and he expressed his hope earlier this week that a ceasefire would be reached next week. He made similar comments the week before, though.Terms of the deal-The deal on the table would secure the release of half of the 20 remaining living hostages, with eight freed on the first day and two released on the 50th day, according to an Arab diplomat from one of the mediating countries.Roughly half of the remaining slain hostages would also be released, with five being freed on the seventh day, five more freed on the 30th day and eight more freed on the 60th day. While Hamas has offered to release all of the hostages in one batch, Netanyahu — under pressure from far-right coalition partners — opted for the phased framework in order to maintain the ability to resume the war. Accordingly, Hamas demanded more staggered releases to ensure that Israel remains at the negotiation table.A Netanyahu aide told Israeli reporters after midnight on Saturday that Israel had received Hamas’s response and was studying its contents.Meanwhile, Palestinian Islamic Jihad — a smaller Gaza terror group that is aligned with Hamas in the war and also holding hostages, issued a statement backing plans to hold proximity talks with Israel, while seeking “guarantees.”“We presented (Hamas) a number of detailed points on the mechanism for putting in place the mediators’ proposal, and we want additional guarantees to assure us (that Israel) will not resume its aggression after (hostages) are freed,” PIJ said in a statement issued shortly after Hamas’s.The proximity talks are expected to be very difficult, with Israel reportedly fearing that Hamas will try and increase the number of Palestinian security prisoners that are released for every hostage. And if those talks succeed, the subsequent negotiations on a permanent ceasefire are likely to be even thornier, with Israel demanding the disarmament of Hamas and the exile of its leaders — conditions that the terror group has long rejected. Netanyahu reportedly told security cabinet members earlier this week that he wanted to fight in Gaza until the last Hamas gunman is defeated. It is over. We will release all our hostages.”Hamas had been deliberating the latest ceasefire proposal since Tuesday, when Trump announced that Israel had accepted it.Trump’s aides met with Netanyahu confidant and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer in Washington, consulting with him on the terms of the deal before the president’s Tuesday announcement.Trump will host Netanyahu at the White House on Monday for the Israeli premier’s third visit in six months. No other foreign leader has been in the Oval Office more than once since the start of Trump’s second term.On Thursday, Trump hosted former American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander at the White House and reportedly pledged to secure the release of the remaining 50 captives, 20 of whom are believed to be alive. On Friday, he told reporters that Gazans have “been through hell,” dodging a reporter’s question about whether he still plans for the US to take over the Strip.“I want the people of Gaza to be safe,” he answered.

Officials said readying to decide which hostages go free 1st-As sides await Hamas response to truce deal, Trump said to offer personal pledge to end war-Terror group says it’s holding discussions with other factions, as formal reply expected on Friday; Israeli official: Ceasefire may start next week if Hamas gives ‘positive answer’By Nava Freiberg,Lazar Berman,ToI Staff and Agencies 4 July 2025, 5:03 am

As Israel and mediators were waiting for Hamas’s response Friday to the latest proposal for a hostage release and ceasefire deal in Gaza, a report said US President Donald Trump would offer the Palestinian terror group a direct guarantee that he will remain committed to ending the war in the Strip, which has been grinding on since October 2023.Israel is believed to be under heavy US pressure to clinch a ceasefire deal ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington for talks with Trump next week.Sources have indicated in recent days that the sides had shown flexibility on all issues but remained stuck on the question of ending the war, with Israel insisting that it be able to resume its offensive against Hamas and the terror group demanding that any deal permanently end the fighting, which began with its onslaught in Israel on October 7, 2023.To bridge the remaining gaps between Israel and Hamas on ending the war, Channel 12 news presented a Hebrew translation of what it described as Trump’s likely formulation: Trump will “commit that negotiations over the terms for ending the war will continue even after a temporary ceasefire, and that I will do everything in my power to help the parties reach an agreement on the terms of a permanent ceasefire.”According to the unsourced Thursday report, Trump’s message to Hamas is that if it agrees to the so-called Witkoff framework — which includes the release of 10 living hostages in two phases and 18 bodies in three phases over the course of a 60-day ceasefire — the US will ensure efforts continue to reach a lasting end to the conflict.Reports have said the proposal contains assurances from the mediators that both sides will not resume fighting as long as negotiations to end the war are ongoing, although Israeli sources have insisted it doesn’t include an Israeli commitment to not renew the fighting if the talks fall through.Ahead of Netanyahu’s White House visit on Monday, Israel is optimistic about Hamas’s formal response and believes proximity talks could begin within days, the report added.Hamas said early Friday morning that it was discussing the US-backed ceasefire proposal with other Palestinian groups, and that it would submit its response to mediators once the talks concluded. The statement came after unverified reports by Hamas-linked outlets claimed the terror group had given a “positive answer” to the proposal.Channel 13 news reported earlier Thursday evening, citing a senior Israeli official, that Jerusalem believes Hamas will give an answer to the offer by Friday evening.“If it comes back with a positive answer, [the deal] could take place by next week,” said the senior official. The Kan public broadcaster and Channel 12 have both reported that if Hamas gives a positive response, an Israeli negotiation team will be ready to head at short notice to Doha, Qatar, for mediated talks aimed at wrapping up the final points of contention. Among those is the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza during the halt in fighting.Netanyahu held a meeting with a small group of ministers Thursday night on the terms of a potential deal. The 60-day deal is expected to see five separate releases of dead and living hostages, with Channel 13 saying that on day one, eight living hostages will be released; on day seven, five bodies; on day 30, another five bodies; on day 50, two living hostages; and on the last day, eight more bodies. Were this process completed, this would leave 22 hostages still held in Gaza, at least 10 of them believed to be alive.Various outlets have reported similar terms for the deal, with Hamas said to agree to forgo public hostage release ceremonies and Israel said to agree to hold off on resuming military operations so long as talks on ending the war were ongoing.Hamas staged celebratory events for handovers during a previous truce in January and February, angering Israel and the US and drawing condemnation from the UN human rights chief.Reports have indicated that the hostages will be released in return for Israel setting free Palestinian security prisoners it is holding, and a boost in humanitarian aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip. The full security cabinet was set to meet on Saturday night to vote on the proposal before Netanyahu takes off for Washington. The ceasefire could start while Netanyahu is in the United States, according to Channel 13.Meanwhile, several reports indicated that the government and the negotiating team were gearing up for the complex and sensitive task of determining which hostages would be released first if the deal is implemented.Political leaders were set to decide after being presented by the negotiating team with information about the medical conditions of the captives, Channel 12 news reported, citing a senior member of the negotiations team. However, the report added that due to the sensitivity of the matter, the cabinet could decide not to decide by itself.Similarly, Kan news reported, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, that the government was planning to task the negotiation team to make recommendations as to the order of hostages’ release. The report noted that Israel has defined all the remaining hostages as “humanitarian” in lists handed to mediators, and cited an Israeli source as saying the details of the hostages’ release will become clearer if and when there are proximity talks between Israel and Hamas.Meanwhile Thursday, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said he hoped the ceasefire and hostage release agreement being negotiated was “a done deal,” but whether it will get across the finish line is ultimately up to Hamas.“Let’s hope they understand it’s time for this to end… the reason it hasn’t [ended] before is because Hamas has been unwilling to let go of their grip on these hostages,” Huckabee said in an interview with Channel 12.He also insisted that “Hamas has no future in Gaza.”Palestinian terror groups are holding 50 hostages who were abducted from southern Israel on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led terrorists burst into the country. The attack also killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, triggering the war.The hostages include the bodies of at least 28 confirmed dead by the IDF. Twenty are believed to be alive and there are grave concerns for the well-being of two others, Israeli officials have said.Nurit Yohanan and Stav Levaton contributed to this report.

Australian PM: 'A cowardly act of antisemitism'-Israeli restaurant attacked, synagogue torched within minutes of each other in Melbourne-Anti-Israel mob said to chant ‘Death to the IDF’ while hurling furniture through ‘Miznon’ window; suspect sets entrance of historic synagogue on fire; 20 people inside evacuate unscathed-By ToI Staff and Agencies Today, 6:13 am-JUL 5,25

A mob of pro-Palestinian protesters vandalized an Israeli-owned restaurant in Melbourne on Friday evening, just minutes after a nearby historic synagogue was targeted in an arson attack while worshippers were inside, Australian authorities said.About 20 anti-Israel protesters stormed the Miznon restaurant at around 8:30 p.m. local time, with the Herald Sun citing witnesses who said the mob chanted “Death to the IDF.” Rap duo Bob Vylan led a crowd in shouting the same phrase at the Glastonbury festival in England days earlier. The protesters — many of them masked — hurled furniture and food at the restaurant, shattering one of its outer windows as customers dined both inside and outside.Police said they arrested a 28-year-old protester and questioned several other participants at the scene, identifying each of them for the purpose of a follow-up investigation.Activists say they targeted the Miznon restaurant because it is co-owned by Shahar Segal, who has served as a spokesperson for the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which has been rejected by other aid groups who say its food distribution sites expose Gazans to IDF gunfire.Around half an hour before the incident at Miznon, police said a man entered the grounds of the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation and poured flammable liquid on the door before setting it alight while worshippers were inside.Roughly 20 people were inside the synagogue at the time of the fire, but they managed to evacuate before anyone was injured, authorities said. The authorites added that firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes to put out the blaze.Damage from the fire was contained to the entrance of the synagogue, police said, adding that while the suspect remained at large, the incident was caught on security cameras.Police said they believed the attack was carried out by a male suspect. He has not been identified but is thought to be white and aged in his 30s.There is “no place in our society for antisemitic or hate-based behavior,” police said.Responding to the synagogue arson, Acting Victoria Police Commander Zorka Dunstan said, “These crimes are disgusting and abhorrent, but at this stage, we are not declaring this a terrorist incident.”“In the course of our investigation, we will examine the intent and the ideology of the persons involved, or person, to determine if this is in fact terrorism. At the moment, we are categorizing it as a serious criminal incident and responding accordingly,” she added.A terrorism declaration opens the investigation to more resourcing and can result in charges that carry longer prison sentences.Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel said the attacks were terrorist acts and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.“Targeting Jewish houses of worship and an Israeli restaurant is terrorism, aimed at intimidating an entire community simply because of their religion and identity,” wrote Haskel on X.“The horrifying attacks overnight on a synagogue and an Israeli business in Melbourne are yet another reminder of how far racist, antisemitic hate crimes have spread in the heart of Australia,” she said.“Let me be clear: these attacks are happening because, for too long, there have been no real consequences for those spreading hate and inciting violence. Weakness and silence only embolden the extremists,” Haskel said. “There is no justification — ever — for violence and hatred directed at Jews, Israelis, or any minority. The perpetrators of this terrorism must be brought to justice.”The synagogue’s president, Danny Segal, called for the wider Australian community to stand with his congregation.“We’re here to be in peace, you know, we’re here for everybody to live together and we’ve got a fresh start in Australia, such a beautiful country, and what they’re doing is just not fair and not right, and as Australians, we should stand up and everybody should stand up,” Segal told reporters. The attack on the synagogue came seven months after another synagogue in Melbourne was targeted by arsonists who set a blaze that injured one and caused widespread damage.Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Saturday condemned the synagogue attack, saying it was a “cowardly” act of antisemitism.“Last night’s arson attack on the synagogue in east Melbourne is cowardly, is an act of violence and antisemitism, and has no place in Australian society,”  Albanese said in a statement.“It is to be hoped that the perpetrator is brought to justice urgently, and that he faces the full force of the law, and anyone involved in this attack faces the full force of the law.”He did not mention the attack on the restaurant.Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan called it “absolutely appalling” that a second Jewish synagogue had been attacked.“Any attack on a place of worship is an act of hate, and any attack on a Jewish place of worship is an act of antisemitism,” Allan said in a statement.Australia’s Jewish community, numbering around 120,000, has been among the hardest hit by the global surge in antisemitism since October 7, 2023. The country experienced more than 2,000 anti-Jewish incidents between October 2023 and September 2024, more than quadruple the number from the year before Hamas’s October 7 assault that sparked the Gaza war, according to the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ).In recent months, Jews there have experienced synagogues, schools, and homes firebombed, two nurses threatening to kill Jewish patients in their hospital, and the discovery of a trailer filled with explosives said to be intended for a mass-casualty event at a Sydney synagogue.

Vienna, July 4 (AFP) Jul 04, 2025-UN nuclear watchdog inspectors left Iran on Friday, according to the agency, which called for the resumption of its "indispensable monitoring" after the Islamic republic officially suspended its cooperation. The suspension came after last month's 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel, which saw unprecedented Israeli and US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities and escalated tensions between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."An IAEA team of inspectors today safely departed from Iran to return to the agency headquarters in Vienna, after staying in Tehran throughout the recent military conflict," the IAEA said in a post on X."IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi reiterated the crucial importance of the IAEA discussing with Iran modalities for resuming its indispensable monitoring and verification activities in Iran as soon as possible," it added.Iran officially suspended its cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog on Wednesday. On June 25, a day after a ceasefire took hold, Iranian lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to suspend the cooperation. The law aims to "ensure full support for the inherent rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran" under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, with a particular focus on uranium enrichment, according to Iranian media.Washington, which has been pressing Tehran to resume the negotiations that were interrupted by Israel's resort to military action on June 13, has hit out at the Iranian decision, calling it "unacceptable".

European companies urge EU to delay AI rules.

Brussels, Belgium, July 3 (AFP) Jul 03, 2025-Dozens of Europe's biggest companies urged the EU to hit the pause button on its landmark AI rules on Thursday, warning that going too fast could harm the bloc's ability to lead in the global AI race. The European Union's sweeping rules on artificial intelligence entered into force last year but the bloc has since pivoted to strengthening its industries in the face of fierce competition from China and the United States. The new US administration under President Donald Trump has also taken aim at the rules. Vice President JD Vance in February lambasted the EU over "excessive" regulation. Now, 46 top executives including from France's Airbus and Mistral, Dutch tech giant ASML and Germany's Lufthansa and Mercedes-Benz are calling on Brussels to reassess the rules. They accused the EU's complex regulation of putting "Europe's AI ambitions at risk, as it jeopardises not only the development of European champions, but also the ability of all industries to deploy AI at the scale required by global competition".The CEOs urged the European Commission to propose a two-year pause and for "further simplification of the new rules" for which a code of practice has yet to be released. The pause, the CEOs said, should apply to obligations on general-purpose AI models -- like OpenAI's ChatGPT -- and high-risk AI systems that were due to take effect in August 2025 and August 2026 respectively. The EU's law takes a risk-based approach to the technology. The higher the risk to Europeans' rights or health, for example, the greater the systems' obligations to protect individuals from harm. The EU has been working on the long-delayed code to provide guidance on how the rules should apply to general-purpose AI models, including Google's Gemini and Mistral's Le Chat. There are expectations that the code will be watered down and the commission has said it will be published before the rules on GPAI models kick in next month.AFP has a deal with Mistral allowing its chatbot to draw on the agency's articles to formulate responses.raz/ec/cw

UAH researcher unveils new map of Milky Way galaxy in atomic hydrogen-by Russ Nelson for UAH News.

Huntsville AL (SPX) Jun 12, 2025-Dr. Sukanya Chakrabarti, the Pei-Ling Chan Endowed Chair at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), a part of The University of Alabama System, has co-authored a paper that uses young stars to develop a more accurate map of the outer gas disk of the Milky Way galaxy. The findings are being presented at the 246th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Anchorage, Alaska, on June 8-12, in conjunction with Michigan State University (MSU). The study employs a technique the researchers call "pattern matching," using Cepheid variable stars to effectively anchor the distances of the gas on the outer edges of the galaxy's spiral arms for the first time."The structure in stars is a lot smoother than in the gas. The gas is very fleecy looking, and it actually looks a lot more disturbed," Chakrabarti says. "This is an area I worked on for many years, starting when I was a Ph.D. student with my very first work on spiral structure, particularly with a focus on the gas. Later, as a postdoctoral fellow, I did computer simulations to understand the disturbances in the traditional atomic hydrogen map that was produced by researchers at Berkeley."Building a hydrogen map for the Milky Way has long been crucial to understanding the galaxy's structure, dynamics, star formation and evolution, as well as refining the observations of distant objects. The new study is a collaboration with Chakrabarti's former doctoral student, Dr. Peter Craig, a research associate in the MSU Department of Physics and Astronomy and lead author of the paper. The study incorporates data from the European Space Agency (ESA) Gaia mission."Distance is one of the most fundamental things you can measure in the universe, and one of the most foundational things we can work on in astronomy," Chakrabarti explains. "Unless you know distances, you can't map anything. The Berkeley map was based on the traditional method using so-called 'kinematic distances' that assume a model for the velocity fields of the galaxy."Kinematic distances rely on measuring the velocity of objects and comparing it to a model of the galaxy's rotation, allowing astronomers to associate velocities with distances."The assignment of kinematic distances uses an assumed rotation curve to convert velocity information into a distance estimate," Chakrabarti notes. "For stars, there are some really good ways of doing this. But for the gas, there isn't anything."Bridging the distance-Using kinematic distances to measure distances to gas can be inaccurate due to several factors. "The accuracy of kinematic distances can depend heavily on the rotation curve assumed for the disk," the researcher explains."Regions of the disk that deviate from the assumed velocity model, such as near streaming motions along spiral arms, will lead to systematically inaccurate distance estimates and produce misleading features in the resultant maps of the Milky Way's gas distribution. There can be deviations from the assumed velocity model also towards the galactic bulge and bar. So, when you have a real galaxy you will see these deviations, and if your distance method relies on the simple velocity model, of course you're going to get some inaccurate distance estimates," says Chakrabarti. To address these challenges, the new study uses "pattern matching," the idea of pairing young stars that have known locations with nearby clumps of gas to provide a new map that for the first time does not depend on kinematic distances."When you look at galaxies, you see the spiral structure in the gas is very similar to the spiral structure in the young stars," Chakrabarti says. "That's not very surprising, because young stars are born from the gas which collapses and forms these stars, and then they move from their birth site. With young stars, the patterns of the spiral structure are still very similar to that of a gas."For the study, Chakrabarti and her colleagues chose Cepheid variable stars. Cepheids are pulsating stars that vary in brightness regularly, with periods ranging from a few days to several months. These stars are extremely luminous and can be seen at great distances, making them useful for determining the distances to galaxies."The three basic quantities that go into the gas data are longitude, latitude and velocity," Chakrabarti says. "We plot these for the gas and for the young stars, and you see they're very similar. Cepheid variable stars have very precise distances because [American astronomer] Henrietta Leavitt worked out this fantastic relationship many years ago. So, if you have Cepheids that are close to a clump of gas that doesn't have distances, we give the distances of the young stars to the gas that doesn't have it. This is the idea of pattern matching.""Our new maps nicely demonstrate that the spiral structure in the gas disk of the Milky Way is highly flocculent, and that the overall structure of the disk is complex," Dr. Craig adds. "The maps generated using our new technique can capture features in the gas that might be missed when assuming a smooth rotation model for the Milky Way. Pattern matching maps of the hydrogen disk will only get better with time, as accurate distance measurements become available for an ever-increasing sample of young stars in the galaxy. These new, more accurate, maps of the galactic hydrogen disk may allow for better characterization of the dark matter in the galaxy."Analysis of simulated spiral galaxies indicates that pattern matching distances are 24% more accurate than kinematic distances for gas, which promises important implications for understanding large-scale disturbances in the gas disk and how they are impacted by interactions between the Milky Way and dwarf galaxies. In all, the research employed over 37,000 stars distributed throughout the Milky Way disk with ages under 210 million years to create the new map. "In the future, this novel distance method can be improved with more complete stellar samples," the study concludes.

NASA discovers third interstellar comet-by Andrew Sookdeo.

Washington DC (UPI) Jul 3, 2025-NASA discovered the third interstellar comet through a survey telescope in Rio Hurtado, Chile. The interstellar comet first observed on Tuesday by NASA's Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Alert System telescope, or ATLAS, has been officially named 3I/ATLAS.A series of "pre-discovery" observations dating back to June 14 from three ATLAS Telescopes globally and the Zwicky Transient Facility in California's Palomar Observatory have since been collected, along with new observations from several telescopes since the initial report."If confirmed, it will be the third known interstellar object from outside our solar system that we have discovered," Dr. Mark Norris, a senior lecturer in astronomy at the University of Central Lancashire, told The Guardian.Dr. Paul Chodas, director of the Center for Near Earth Object Studies at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, told The New York Times there is "no uncertainty" that the comet is from interstellar space, noting speeds that indicate it could not have originated in our solar system."If you trace its orbit backward, it seems to be coming from the center of the galaxy, more or less," Chodas said. "It definitely came from another solar system. We don't know which one."The comet will reach its closest approach to the Sun around Oct. 30, but it shows no threat to Earth as it will remain at least 150 million miles away. It is currently about 416 million miles from the Sun.In December, the comet is expected to reappear on the other side of the Sun.The comet's size and physical attributes are being investigated. It is expected to remain visible to ground-based telescopes through September.Jake Foster, a Royal Observatory Greenwich astronomer, said: "At the moment, the comet is not expected to be visible to the naked eye, but it should be visible through a reasonably sized amateur telescope in late 2025 and early 2026. As it is studied more over the coming weeks, we'll get a better idea of just how visible it will realistically be."In 2017 Oumunamua traveled through the solar system as the first interstellar object. In 2019, the second interstellar comet, Borisov passed by.

Wildfires rage in Syria for 3rd day, with conditions made worse by unexploded munitions-As flames blaze through western Latakia province, Damascus says unexploded bombs and mines scattered through country make firefighters’ work even more dangerous; Turkey sends help-By AFP Today, 6:58 pm-JUL 5,25

QASTAL MA‘AF, Syria — Syrian emergency workers were battling forest fires raging in the coastal province of Latakia on Saturday for a third day in tough conditions as neighboring Turkey sent assistance. An AFP correspondent saw strong winds fanning the flames in forest areas and farmland in Qastal Maaf, around a dozen kilometers (eight miles) from the Turkish border, as residents continued to flee with what they could carry. Some residential areas in the region were evacuated a day earlier.Syria’s ministry for emergencies and disaster management said teams from Turkey began helping on Saturday morning “as part of regional coordination to face the fires,” with the assistance including two aircraft and eight fire trucks.Turkey, a key supporter of Syria’s new authorities, has been battling its own fires in recent days, including near the Syrian border. The AFP correspondent saw helicopters bearing the Turkish flag flying over Qastal Maaf assisting firefighters on the ground.Syria’s civil defense said a volunteer firefighter suffered from smoke inhalation and a service vehicle caught fire.More than 60 Syrian civil defense and other teams were fighting fires across several areas of Latakia province, the ministry said.It cited “very difficult conditions, with the explosion of war remnants and mines,” strong winds and high temperatures, adding that mountainous terrain was hampering efforts to reach some blazes.More than six months after the ousting of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, Syria is still reeling from more than a decade of civil war that also left munitions and ordnance scattered across the country.‼️????
