ISAIAH 6:9-12
9  And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
10  Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
11  Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,
12  And the LORD have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.

Turban complications-The turban represents the Shi'ite clergy that, ever since its creation in Iran almost four centuries ago, has had an ambivalent attitude towards the exercise of political power. Broadly speaking, turbans come in two contrasting colors. A white turban means that the man who wears it is not a descendant of the Prophet, and thus is of non-Arab origin. In contrast, the wearer of the black turban is marked as a descendant of the Prophet through one of the twelve imams of Twelver Shi'ism. The semiology of turbans is still more complicated. Students of theology are allowed to wear very thin turbans, denoting their position as novices. A hujjat al-Islam, or mid-ranking mullah, can wear a slightly fatter turban. The very fat turbans that require several yards of cloth are reserved for the grand ayatollahs. Rafsanjani’s white turban marked him as someone of non-Arab origin. Khatami and Khamenei both wear black turbans, as did Khomeini, denoting their Arab descent on the paternal side. The experience of the past three decades shows that many of the most senior clerics are not eager to enter the realm of politics. Once in power, however, a man with a thin turban could quickly thicken his headgear and grow a longer beard to bolster the religious aspect of his image. When first elected president, Ayatollah Khamenei was not a particularly senior cleric, but was promoted so that he could succeed Ayatollah Khomeini.

Israeli military says Iran threat 'to whole world' after Qatar attack.

Jerusalem, June 23 (AFP) Jun 23, 2025-The Israeli military said Monday that Iran's retaliatory attack on US military bases proved that the country was a threat to "the entire world"."I want to say that this is further proof of hostility and violence and of the fact that Iran is a terrorist state, which threatens not only Israel, but the entire Middle East, including its neighbours and the entire world," military spokesman Effie Defrin told reporters in a televised press conference. Israel has been attacking Iran from the air since launching a surprise operation on June 13.

No casualties reported in Iran missile attack on US base in Qatar.Washington, June 23 (AFP) Jun 23, 2025-Iran fired ballistic missiles at a US base in Qatar on Monday but there are no known American casualties or damage to the facility, a US defense official said."I can confirm that Al Udeid Air Base was attacked by short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles originating from Iran today. At this time, there are no reports of US casualties," the official said."We are not aware of any damage to the installation at this time," the defense official added. The Iranian attack came after Washington's forces struck three of Tehran's nuclear sites with bombs and missiles over the weekend. The massive Al Udeid base -- which hosts thousands of American personnel -- includes the forward headquarters of the US Central Command as well as of its air and special operations forces.

Blasts heard over Doha after Qatar suspends air traffic.

Doha, June 23 (AFP) Jun 23, 2025-Explosions could be heard over Doha on Monday, shortly after Qatar, which hosts the biggest US base in the Middle East, suspended air traffic as Iran threatened retaliation for US strikes on its nuclear sites.AFP journalists heard several rounds of blasts in central Doha and across the Qatari capital, with projectiles stopped by interceptors illuminating the night sky.Gas-rich Qatar, which lies 190 kilometres (120 miles) south of Iran across the Gulf, is home to the United States' largest military base in the region, Al Udeid, which hosts the regional headquarters of the Pentagon's Central Command."The competent authorities announce the temporary suspension of air traffic in the country's airspace, as part of a set of precautionary measures taken based on developments in the region," the foreign ministry said.It added authorities were monitoring the situation "in coordination with regional and international partners".Earlier, the US embassy in Qatar advised Americans there not to go out, with other Western embassies echoing the warning."Out of an abundance of caution we recommend American citizens shelter in place until further notice," the US embassy said on its website.Britain and Canada later cited the US security alert in their own recommendations to nationals.Iran's armed forces threatened on Monday to inflict "serious, unpredictable consequences" on the US after it joined its ally Israel's campaign against the Islamic republic, carrying out heavy strikes on three nuclear sites.Last week, dozens of US military aircraft were no longer on the tarmac at al-Udeid, according to satellite images published by Planet Labs PBC and analysed by AFP.Nearly 40 military aircraft -- including transport planes like the Hercules C-130 and reconnaissance aircraft -- were parked on the tarmac at the base, the regional headquarters of the Pentagon's Central Command, on June 5, but in an image taken on June 19, only three aircraft were visible. In Bahrain, a close neighbour of Qatar that hosts the US Fifth Fleet, the American embassy "temporarily shifted a portion of its employees to local telework", it said on X.Bahraini authorities had already told most government employees to work from home until further notice, citing "regional circumstances".Following the US warning in Doha, Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said such statements by foreign embassies "do not necessarily reflect the existence of specific or credible threats"."We would like to reassure the public that the security situation in the state remains stable," he wrote on X. "Qatar continues to exert intensive diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region."On Sunday, the US State Department advised Americans worldwide to "exercise increased caution" because of the war between Israel and Iran. After Israel's first strikes on Iran on June 13, the US embassy in Qatar had told its staff and other Americans to exercise caution and "limit non-essential travel to Al Udeid Air Base".csp/aya/dcp

Israel targets Iran Guards, Tehran prison in fresh wave of strikes-By Ahmad Parhizi and Sebastien Ricci with Alice Chancellor in Jerusalem.

Tehran (AFP) June 23, 2025-Israel hit Revolutionary Guard sites and the notorious Evin prison in Tehran on Monday, calling them its most powerful strikes yet on the Iranian capital on the 11th day of the war.Iran, in turn, fired missile barrages at Israel and vowed retaliation against the United States after it struck the Islamic republic's nuclear sites a day earlier.Loud explosions rocked the Iranian capital, where Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the military hit "regime targets" with "unprecedented force", adding to speculation that Israel may seek to topple Iran's clerical leadership. The targets included Evin prison, which Katz said "holds political prisoners and regime opponents", as well as command centres of the domestic Basij militia and the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Israeli military said in a statement that the targets belong to Iranian forces "responsible... for defending the homeland security, suppressing threats, and maintaining the regime's stability".Iranian media and the Israeli military said Israel also struck Fordo, a key nuclear enrichment facility buried deep in the mountains south of Tehran. The military said it had struck Fordo on Monday "in order to obstruct access routes" to the site, which Israel's ally the United States hit the previous day with "bunker buster" bombs.- 'Obliterated' -President Donald Trump boasted Sunday's US strikes had "obliterated" Iran's nuclear capabilities, but other officials said it was too soon to assess the impact on Iran's nuclear programme, which Israel and some Western states consider an existential threat.Sirens sounded across Israel on Monday and AFP journalists reported blasts were heard over Jerusalem.Defence Minister Israel Katz said the Israeli military was "carrying out strikes of unprecedented force against regime targets and agencies of government oppression in the heart of Tehran".Iranian media said Israel's strikes hit a power supply system in Tehran, triggering temporary outages. In Israel, the national electricity company reported "damage near a strategic infrastructure facility" in the south that disrupted power supply, without naming the location or specifying the cause. Some details of the damage in Israel are barred from publication due to military censorship rules. An AFP photographer in Tel Aviv saw people rush to a bomb shelter after sirens sounded.Israeli strikes on Iran have killed more than 400 people, Iran's health ministry said. Iran's attacks on Israel have killed 24 people, according to official figures.- 'Extremely dangerous' -After the US strikes, global markets reacted nervously, with oil prices jumping more than four percent early Monday but dipping later in the day.China urged both Iran and Israel to prevent the conflict from spilling over, warning of potential economic fallout.Iranian armed forces spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari said on state television that the US "hostile act", following more than a week of Israeli bombardments, would "pave the way for the extension of war in the region"."The fighters of Islam will inflict serious, unpredictable consequences on you," he warned.Oman, a key mediator in the stalled Iran-US nuclear talks, condemned the US strikes and called for calm.US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on China to help deter Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for one-fifth of the world's oil supply. The European Union's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said closing the strategic strait would be "extremely dangerous".With Iran threatening US bases in the region, the State Department issued a worldwide alert cautioning Americans abroad. In Bahrain, home to a major US base, the US embassy said it had "temporarily shifted a portion of its employees to local telework" citing "heightened regional tensions".- Trump touts 'regime change' -After the Pentagon stressed the goal of American intervention was not to topple the Iranian government, Trump openly toyed with the idea."If the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn't there be a Regime change???" Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.Hours later he posted: "Monumental Damage was done to all Nuclear sites in Iran... Obliteration is an accurate term!"At a Pentagon press briefing earlier in the day, top US general Dan Caine said "initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage".Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council that craters were visible at the Fordo facility, but it had not been possible to assess the underground damage."Armed attacks on nuclear facilities should never take place," he added.Iran has consistently denied seeking an atomic bomb, and Grossi has said there was no evidence to suggest so despite the Islamic republic's advanced uranium enrichment and other activities. The IAEA said on Monday Tehran had informed it of "special measures to protect nuclear material" when the Israeli campaign began. The US agency also said it was seeking access to Iranian nuclear sites to "account for" stockpiles of highly enriched uranium.Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who was due to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, had accused the United States of deciding to "blow up" nuclear diplomacy with its intervention in the war.burs-ami/jsa

Israel says struck to 'obstruct access routes' to Iran's Fordo-by AFP Staff Writers.

Jerusalem (AFP) June 23, 2025-The Israeli military said it had launched air raids Monday to block access to Iran's enriched uranium facility in Fordo which was bombed by the United States at the weekend.A military statement said Israeli forces had "struck in order to obstruct access routes to the Fordo enrichment site" which US President Donald Trump said had been "totally obliterated" by the US strikes. There has been speculation that Iran might have moved out some of its known 400-kilogramme stockpile of highly enriched uranium before the US bombing of its storage sites in the early hours of Sunday. The International Atomic Energy Agency, which has been monitoring Iran's nuclear programme, called earlier Monday for access to the Islamic republic's nuclear sites to "account for" the uranium."There needs to be a cessation of hostilities for the necessary safety and security conditions to prevail so that Iran can let IAEA teams into the sites to assess the situation," the head of the UN's nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, said.Speaking to an emergency meeting of the organisation's board of governors in Vienna, he said that "at this time, no-one including the IAEA, is in a position to have fully assessed the underground damage at Fordo."Asked about the location of Iran's enriched uranium stockpile on Sunday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had "interesting intelligence" but declined to elaborate."We're following that," he told reporters. "We've been following it very closely... we have interesting intelligence on that which you'll excuse me if I don't share with you."According to the IAEA, Iran had enriched uranium to 60 percent in 2021, a short step from the 90 percent required for use in a weapon.Israel has maintained ambiguity about its own atomic arsenal, neither officially confirming nor denying it exists, but the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has estimated it has 90 nuclear warheads.

Israel attacks Iran's Fordo nuclear site: Iranian media.

Tehran (AFP) June 23, 2025 - Israel carried out a fresh strike on Iran's underground Fordo nuclear site south of Tehran, a media outlet in the country reported."The aggressor attacked the Fordo nuclear site again," Tasnim news agency reported, quoting a spokesperson for the crisis management authority in Qom province where the site is located. The latest attacks come a day after the United States launched unprecedented strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities including Fordo and sites at Isfahan and Natanz.US President Donald Trump said the strikes had "obliterated" Iran's nuclear capabilities, but other officials said it was too soon to assess the true impact on Iran's nuclear programme.Iran condemned the attack and vowed retaliation, noting there were "no signs of contamination" after the US strikes. The US strikes came around 10 days after Israel launched an attack on Iran killing nuclear scientists, top military commanders as well as striking military bases, nuclear sites and residential areas across the country.

IAEA seeks access to Iran nuclear sites to 'account for' highly enriched uranium stockpiles.

Vienna (AFP) June 23, 2025 - The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog on Monday called for its inspectors to be able to return to Iran's nuclear sites in a bid to "account for" its highly enriched uranium stockpiles. He called for a cessation of hostilities. The request follows attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran's nuclear facilities."Iran, Israel and the Middle East need peace," Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told an emergency meeting of the organisation's board of governors in Vienna."For that, we must take a number of steps," he said."First of all, we must return to the negotiating table and for that allow IAEA inspectors -- the guardians on our behalf of the NPT (nuclear non-proliferation treaty) -- to go back to Iran's nuclear sites and account for the stockpiles of uranium, including, most importantly, the 400 kilogrammes enriched to 60 percent."Grossi said Tehran had sent him a letter on June 13 announcing the implementation of "special measures to protect nuclear equipment and materials"."There needs to be a cessation of hostilities for the necessary safety and security conditions to prevail so that Iran can let IAEA teams into the sites to assess the situation," he said.Over the weekend, the United States struck three Iranian nuclear sites, joining Israel's bombardments of Iran's nuclear programme."Craters are now visible at the Fordo site, Iran's main facility for enriching uranium at 60 percent, indicating the use of ground-penetrating munitions," he said.He added that "very significant damage" is expected to have occurred for the US bombing "given the explosive payload utilised and the extreme vibration-sensitive nature of centrifuges"."At this time, no-one including the IAEA, is in a position to have fully assessed the underground damage at Fordo," he said. The US strikes came after Israel began launching large-scale attacks on Iran on June 13 targeting its missile and nuclear facilities, military leaders and security services, and residential sites.Iran's uranium enrichment has for decades caused tension, with Western powers voicing fears the drive is aimed at making an atomic bomb, a claim denied by Tehran.Israel has maintained ambiguity about its own atomic arsenal, neither officially confirming nor denying it exists, but the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has estimated it has 90 nuclear warheads.European powers have urged Tehran to revive diplomatic efforts with the United States to find a solution in the standoff over its nuclear programme.Iran has said it can only consider diplomacy once Israel halts its bombardment of the Islamic republic.

Iran's Khamenei 'can no longer be allowed to exist': Israel defence minister by AFP Staff Writers.

Holon, Israel (AFP) June 19, 2025-Israel's defence minister said Thursday that Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei "can no longer be allowed to exist" after an Israeli hospital was hit during an Iranian missile attack."Khamenei openly declares that he wants Israel destroyed -- he personally gives the order to fire on hospitals. He considers the destruction of the state of Israel to be a goal," Israel Katz told journalists in Holon near Tel Aviv. "Such a man can no longer be allowed to exist."

Israel's Netanyahu says Iran will 'pay heavy price' after hospital hit.

Jerusalem (AFP) June 19, 2025 - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran would "pay a heavy price" after a hospital in southern Israel was hit during an Iranian missile attack on Thursday, while his defence minister said Iran's supreme leader would be "held accountable"."This morning, Iran's terrorist dictators fired missiles at Soroka Hospital... and at civilians in the centre of the country. We will make the tyrants in Tehran pay a heavy price," Netanyahu said in a post on X.The Soroka Hospital in the southern town of Beersheba was left in flames following an early morning barrage of "dozens" of Iranian ballistic missiles, with impacts also reported in two Israeli towns close to coastal hub Tel Aviv.Speaking at the scene of the hospital, director Shlomi Kodesh said that a surgical building which had been evacuated in the past few days was hit, adding that 40 people had sustained injuries."Several wards were completely demolished and there is extensive damage across the entire hospital with damage to buildings, structures, windows, ceilings across the medical centre," he told journalists.Iran said it was targeting an Israeli military and intelligence base, not the health facility. The latest escalation came on the seventh day of deadly exchanges between the two countries, with US President Donald Trump maintaining suspense about whether Washington will enter the war alongside Israel.Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has rejected Trump's demand for an "unconditional surrender", despite claims from the US leader that "Iran's got a lot of trouble and they want to negotiate".- 'Never surrender' -Trump has left his intentions on joining the conflict deliberately ambiguous, saying Wednesday: "I may do it, I may not do it. I mean, nobody knows what I'm going to do.""The next week is going to be very big," he added, without further details.Any US involvement would be expected to involve the bombing of a crucial underground Iranian nuclear facility in Fordow, for which special bunker-busting bombs have been developed. The White House said Trump would receive an intelligence briefing on Thursday, a US holiday. Top US diplomat Marco Rubio is set meet his British counterpart for talks expected to focus on the conflict."I have ideas as to what to do, but I haven't made a final (decision)," Trump said. "I like to make the final decision one second before it's due, because things change. Especially with war."The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump had told aides on Tuesday he had approved attack plans but was holding off to see if Iran would give up its nuclear programme.Trump told reporters that Iranian officials "want to come to the White House", a claim denied by Tehran. The US president had favoured a diplomatic route to end Iran's nuclear programme, seeking a deal to replace the 2015 agreement he tore up in his first term. But since Israel unleashed the campaign against Iran last week, Trump has stood behind the key US ally.- Nuclear sites -On Thursday morning, Israel said it had carried out dozens of fresh raids on Iranian targets overnight, including the partially built Arak nuclear reactor and a nuclear facility in Natanz that has been struck previously. The Israeli military said the Arak site on the outskirts of the village of Khondab in central Iran had been hit "to prevent the reactor from being restored and used for nuclear weapons development".There was also a "near-total national internet blackout" in Iran on Wednesday, a London-based watchdog said, with Iran's Fars news agency confirming heavier internet restrictions after initial curbs imposed last week. The military campaign has sparked calls for a return to diplomacy.Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that a deal to guarantee both Israel's security and Iran's desire for a civilian nuclear programme was possible."I believe it would be good for all of us together to look for ways to stop the fighting and seek ways for the participants in the conflict to find an agreement," he told foreign journalists at a televised event. He said Iran had not asked Russia for military help.- Daily barrages -An Israeli military official, who asked not to be named, said Wednesday that Iran had fired around 400 ballistic missiles and 1,000 drones since the conflict began on Friday.About 20 missiles had struck civilian areas in Israel, the official added.Iranian strikes have killed at least 24 people and injured hundreds since they began, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said on Monday.Iran said Sunday that Israeli strikes had killed at least 224 people, including military commanders, nuclear scientists and civilians. Both countries have not issued an updated official toll since then.Israel says its surprise air campaign is aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.Iran had been enriching uranium to 60 percent -- far above the 3.67-percent limit set by the 2015 nuclear death but still short of the 90-percent threshold needed for a nuclear warhead.Israel has maintained ambiguity on its own atomic activities, but the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute says it has 90 nuclear warheads.

Iran-Israel war: latest developments.

Jerusalem (AFP) June 23, 2025 - Israel struck Tehran and Iran fired missiles on Monday, as the war between the longtime foes raged for its 11th day after the United States sent bombers to attack the Islamic republic's nuclear sites. Here are the latest developments:- Iran Guards, Tehran prison -Israel carried out "strikes of unprecedented force against regime targets and agencies of government oppression in the heart of Tehran", Defence Minister Israel Katz said as an AFP journalist heard loud blasts in the north of the Iranian capital.Katz said the targets included the notorious Evin prison in the city's north, known to hold political prisoners and dissidents as well as foreign detainees.Iran's judiciary confirmed Evin was struck, reporting "damage" and stressing the situation was "under control".Israel also carried out a strike on Fordo, according to the military and Iranian media, a day after US "bunker buster" bombs hit the underground nuclear site south of Tehran. In Israel, air raid sirens sent people to bomb shelters on Monday, with the military reporting at least three missile barrages in less than two hours. The state power company said that "damage near a strategic infrastructure facility" in Israel's south caused outages. In Tehran, authorities said electricity supply disrupted by an Israeli attack was restored.Israeli strikes on Iran since June 13 have killed more than 400 people, Iran's health ministry said. Iran's attacks on Israel have killed 24 people, according to official figures.- 'Extension of war' -Iran's armed forces threatened on Monday to inflict "serious, unpredictable consequences" on the United States in retaliation for its strikes on the Isfahan, Natanz and Fordo nuclear sites."This hostile act... will widen the scope of legitimate targets of the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran and pave the way for the extension of war in the region," said armed forces spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari.Ali Akbar Velayati, an adviser to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said bases used by US forces "in the region or elsewhere" could be attacked. The US embassy in Bahrain -- home to a major US military base -- reduced on-site staffing citing "heightened regional tensions".- 'Spillover' -China on Monday warned against "the spillover of war", urging the international community to do more to prevent the fighting from impacting the world's economy, noting the global importance of the Gulf maritime trade routes off the Iranian coast.Oil prices briefly fell into the red on Monday after surging, as traders weighed possible retaliation by Iran.US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on China to help deter Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for one-fifth of the world's oil supply. The European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said closing the strait would be "extremely dangerous".Russian President Vladimir Putin slammed attacks on Iran as "unprovoked" and "unjustified" in a Moscow meeting with Tehran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, without announcing any concrete support to his key ally in the Middle East.- Nuclear stockpiles -The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency demanded Monday the return of inspectors to Iran's nuclear sites in a bid to "account for" its highly enriched uranium stockpiles."Allow IAEA inspectors... to go back to Iran's nuclear sites and account for the stockpiles of uranium" including the "400 kilograms enriched to 60 percent", said agency chief Rafael Grossi. At an emergency meeting of the organisation's headquarters in Vienna, he said Tehran had sent him a letter on June 13 announcing the implementation of "special measures to protect nuclear equipment and materials".

Britain, U.S. warn Iran against Strait of Hormuz blockade  by Ian Stark.

Washington DC (UPI) Jun 23, 2025-Britain cautioned Iran Monday that attempts to block the Strait of Hormuz or to strike at American military facilities in the Middle East could lead to escalation, even as Israel continued its strikes on Iran.British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said Monday that such actions would be a "catastrophic mistake.""It would be a huge, catastrophic mistake to fire at U.S. bases in the region at this time. We have forces in the region at this time," said Lammy in an interview with BBC Breakfast. The Iranian parliament moved Sunday to approve a measure to close the Strait in response to the American strikes on Iran over the weekend. The strait serves as a critical route for oil being shipped from Persian Gulf countries, but ultimately it will come down to whether Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei decides to move forward with such a plan.Close to 30% of the world's seaborne oil shipments are moved through the strait.U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also commented Sunday against Iranian interference with movement through the strait. He spoke with Fox News and called on China to prevent Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz."I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call them about that, because they heavily depend on the Straits of Hormuz for their oil," said Rubio, as China is a key oil customer of Iran."The Persian Gulf and nearby waters are important route for international trade in goods and energy. Keeping the region safe and stable serves the common interests of the international community," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun said in a press conference Monday."China calls on the international community to step up effort to promote de-escalation of the conflict and prevent the regional turmoil from having a greater impact on global economic growth."Meanwhile, Israel Defense Forces announced Monday on social media that it "struck routes in order to obstruct access" to the Fordow nuclear enrichment site in Iran's Qom province. The IDF also proclaimed it attacked six Iranian airports "across western, central, and eastern Iran, destroying runways, underground hangars, refueling aircraft, F-14, F-5 and AH-1 aircraft."It further alleged the strikes "impaired takeoff capabilities from these airports, as well as the Iranian military's ability to operate its air force from them."

Asian countries most vulnerable to Strait of Hormuz blockade,

Tokyo (AFP) June 23, 2025 - Around 84 percent of oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz is destined for Asia, leaving the economies of China, India, South Korea and others vulnerable should Iran blockade the crucial trading route over US strikes on its nuclear sites.Around 14.2 million barrels of crude oil and 5.9 million barrels of other petroleum products pass through the strait per day -- representing around 20 percent of global production in the first quarter, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).And crude oil from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and Iran almost exclusively passes through the corridor. Here are the main Asian countries where oil exported via the strait is destined:- China -More than half of the oil imported by East Asia passes through the Strait of Hormuz, experts estimate.China is one of the largest buyers, importing 5.4 million barrels of crude oil a day through Hormuz in the first quarter this year, according to the EIA.Saudi Arabia is China's second-largest supplier of crude oil, accounting for 15 percent of its total oil imports -- 1.6 million barrels a day.China also buys more than 90 percent of Iran's oil exports, according to the analysis firm Kpler. It imported 1.3 million barrels of Iranian crude oil a day in April, down from a five-month high in March.- India -India is highly dependent on the Strait of Hormuz, importing 2.1 million barrels of crude a day through the corridor in the first quarter, EIA data shows.Around 53 percent of India's imported oil in early 2025 came from Middle Eastern suppliers, particularly Iraq and Saudi Arabia, local media reported.Wary of an escalating conflict in the Middle East, New Delhi has increased its imports of Russian oil over the past three years."We have been closely monitoring the evolving geopolitical situation in the Middle East since the past two weeks," India's Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said on Sunday."We have diversified our supplies in the past few years and a large volume of our supplies do not come through the Strait of Hormuz now," he wrote on X, adding "We will take all necessary steps to ensure stability of supplies of fuel to our citizens."- South Korea -Around 68 percent of South Korea's crude oil imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz -- 1.7 million barrels a day this year, according to the EIA.South Korea is particularly dependent on its main supplier Saudi Arabia, which last year accounted for a third of its oil imports.Seoul's trade and energy ministry said there have been "no disruptions so far in South Korea's crude oil and LNG imports" but "given the possibility of a supply crisis", officials were "planning for potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz"."The government and industry stakeholders have prepared for emergencies by maintaining a strategic petroleum reserve equivalent to about 200 days of supply," the ministry said in a statement.- Japan -Japan imports 1.6 million barrels of crude oil a day through the Strait of Hormuz, the EIA says.Japanese customs data showed 95 percent of crude oil imports last year came from the Middle East. The country's energy freight companies are readying for a potential blockade of the strait."We're currently taking measures to shorten as much as possible the time spent by our vessels in the Gulf," shipping giant Mitsui OSK told AFP.- Others Around 2 million barrels of crude oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz each day in the first quarter were destined for other parts of Asia -- particularly Thailand and the Philippines -- as well as Europe (0.5 million barrels) and the United States (0.4 million barrels).- Limited alternatives -Asian countries could diversify their oil suppliers, but it is difficult to replace the large volumes coming from the Middle East.In the short term, "elevated global oil inventories, OPEC+'s available spare capacity, and US shale production all could provide some buffer", experts at MUFG Bank said."However, a full closure of the Hormuz Strait would still impact on the accessibility of a major part of this spare production capacity concentrated in the Persian Gulf," they said.Saudi Arabia and the UAE have infrastructure to bypass the strait, potentially mitigating disruptions, but their transit capacity remains very limited -- around 2.6 million barrels a day.And the Goreh-Jask pipeline built by Iran to export via the Gulf of Oman, which has been inactive since last year, has a maximum capacity of only 300,000 barrels per day, according to the EIA.

Russia: Other nations ready to supply Iran with nukes; as US claims strikes 'devastated' program by Adam Schrader.

Washington DC (UPI) Jun 22, 2025-In the wake of President Donald Trump's strike on Iran's nuclear sites Saturday, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Sunday that "a number of countries" are ready to directly supply Iran with their own nuclear weapons.Gen. Dan Caine said at a Pentagon press conference Sunday that measuring the damage at the sites would take time but that an initial assessment indicates that all three sites sustained "severe damage and destruction." He revealed that the mission involved 75 precision-guided munitions, including 14 GBU-57 bunker-busters."Do you remember that the operation was beginning, I promised you that Iran's nuclear facilities would be destroyed, one way or another. This promise is kept," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on social media, revealing that the strike was carried out by the United States in "full coordination" with the Israeli Defense Forces. While Israeli and American authorities have indicated major damage at Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan, Iranian and Russian authorities have indicated only minor damage to Iran's capabilities for nuclear enrichment."What have the Americans accomplished with their nighttime strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran?" Medvedev questioned in a post on social media. "The enrichment of nuclear material -- and, now we can say it outright, the future production of nuclear weapons -- will continue. A number of countries are ready to directly supply Iran with their own nuclear warheads."Medvedev said Iran's political leadership has survived despite Israel's apparent pursuit of a regime change and may have "come out even stronger."Like Russia, Iran ally Pakistan is armed with nuclear weapons but said Thursday that it had not yet received requests for any military assistance from Iran while expressing alignment with its neighbor. It has since condemned the U.S. attack on Iran."The unprecedented escalation of tension and violence, owing to ongoing aggression against Iran, is deeply disturbing. Any further escalation of tensions will have severely damaging implications for the region and beyond," Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement Sunday.Sa'eed Iravani, Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, has called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council, Iranian state media reported Sunday. Iran is calling for the Security Council to rebuke the United States, which is a permanent member of the UNSC.The Russian Foreign Ministry also released a statement condemning the strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, calling them a violation of international law and the United Nations charter. It called the attack a "substantial blow to the global non-proliferation regime built around the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.""They have significantly undermined both the credibility of the NPT and the integrity of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) monitoring and verification mechanisms that underpin it," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.China's Foreign Ministry likewise said the United States had violated the U.N. charter and international law as it called for Israel to reach a ceasefire "as soon as possible.""China stands ready to work with the international community to pool efforts together and uphold justice, and work for restoring peace and stability in the Middle East.A Telegram account affiliated with the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps said Sunday that satellite images show Iran had evacuated everything from the Fordow site 48 hours before the US attack and moved it to a safe location."This image shows a large number of trucks that had quickly evacuated enrichment materials, equipment and other supplies from the Fordow site," the post reads. "It is clear that Trump's failed and dramatic attack not only did not damage the underground Fordow facilities, but the site was empty."Rafael Mariano Grossi, the director-general of the IAEA, said Sunday he will call an emergency meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors on Monday after the American strike. He said Iranian nuclear officials had not recorded an increase in off-site radiation levels."As of this time, we don't expect that there will be any health consequences for people or the environment outside the targeted sites," Grossi said. "We will continue to monitor and assess the situation in Iran and provide further updates as additional information becomes available."In apparent criticism of the United States, Grossi said he had "repeatedly stated that nuclear facilities should never be attacked." He called for Israel and the U.S. to stop their "hostilities" against Iran so that the IAEA's "vital inspection work" in Iran could continue.Meanwhile, the IRGC-affiliated Telegram channel said Sunday that Iran struck Israel's Ben Gurion Airport, as well as a biological research center that reportedly housed research into biological warfare, among other military targets."This time, sirens sounded after the precise hits, throwing the enemy off balance," the statement said. "We announce that the main parts of the capacity of the Islamic Republic of Iran's armed forces in this sacred defense have not yet been put into operation."Meanwhile, Israel's war against Gaza continues. The Gaza Health Ministry said Sunday that the death toll has risen to 55,959 people while medical facilities are facing blood shortages. The WAFA news agency reported Sunday that Israeli forces reportedly detained at least 26 Palestinians in the West Bank on Sunday after conducting overnight raids.

US says strikes 'devastated' Iran's nuclear program.

Washington (AFP) June 22, 2025 - Unprecedented US strikes have wrecked Iran's nuclear program, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Sunday, though other officials cautioned the extent of damage at the three sites was unclear.Iran's leaders struck a defiant tone and vowed to respond, while an advisor to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei claimed their stockpile of enriched uranium was not destroyed.International concern intensified over the surprise attacks deepening conflict in the Middle East after Israel launched its bombing campaign against Iran earlier this month.President Donald Trump said he wanted peace and urged Iran to end the conflict after he launched massive overnight strikes on a key underground uranium enrichment site at Fordo, along with nuclear facilities in Isfahan and Natanz."We devastated the Iranian nuclear program," Hegseth told a Pentagon press briefing, adding that the operation "did not target Iranian troops or the Iranian people. "Standing beside Hegseth, top US general Dan Caine said "it would be way too early for me to comment on what may or may not still be there.""Initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction."- Protests in Tehran -People gathered Sunday in the center of Tehran to protest against US and Israeli attacks, waving flags and chanting slogans, state TV showed.Trump claimed total success for the operation in an address to the nation hours after the attack, and Vice President JD Vance followed up on Sunday morning."We know that we set the Iranian nuclear program back substantially last night, whether it's years or beyond," he told ABC.But he also suggested Iran still had its highly enriched uranium."We're going to work in the coming weeks to ensure that we do something with that fuel," he said. "They no longer have the capacity to turn that stockpile of highly enriched uranium to weapons grade uranium."In Tehran, AFP journalists said aircraft had roared over the city for the first time since Israel's initial attacks."Even if nuclear sites are destroyed, game isn't over, enriched materials, indigenous knowledge, political will remain," Khamenei advisor Ali Shamkhani said in a post on X.Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian vowed that the United States would "receive a response" to attacks during a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, according to the official IRNA news agency.Rafael Grossi, the head of the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told CNN that there were clear signs of the hit on Fordo. But "no one, neither us (or) nobody else could be able to tell you how much it has been damaged," he said. The IAEA said it had not detected any increase in radiation levels at the nuclear sites and Tehran said Sunday there were no signs of contamination.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prayed for Trump at the Western Wall in Jerusalem on Sunday, after hailing the strikes as a move that would "change history."- Retaliation risk -The Israeli military was also checking the results of the US raid on the deeply buried nuclear facility in Fordo, with a spokesman saying it was "too soon" to know if Iran had removed enriched uranium from the site. The main US strike group was seven B-2 Spirit bombers that flew 18 hours from the American mainland to Iran, Caine said.In response to the attack, which used over a dozen massive "bunker buster" bombs, Iran's armed forces said they targeted multiple sites in Israel including Ben Gurion airport, the country's main international gateway near Tel Aviv.Israeli rescuers said at least 23 people were wounded. In Jerusalem, Claudio Hazan, a 62-year-old software engineer, said he hoped the US intervention would hasten an end to the Iran-Israel war."Israel by itself would not stop... and it would take longer," he said.At least nine members of the Revolutionary Guards were killed Sunday in Israeli attacks on central Iran, local media reported, as fighting between the two foes continued. The United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman, which had been mediating Iran-US nuclear talks, criticized the US move and called for de-escalation.The leaders of France, Germany and Britain on Sunday urged Iran "not to take any further action that could destabilise the region."Following his address, Trump warned Iran against retaliation. Iran and its proxies have previously attacked US military bases in Iraq and elsewhere in the region.Iran's Huthi allies in Yemen on Sunday repeated their threat to resume attacks in the Red Sea if Washington joined the war, saying they were ready to target US ships and warships. The US president had stepped up his rhetoric against Iran since Israel first struck the country on June 13, repeating his insistence it could never have nuclear weapons.burs-wd/bgs/des

Middle East-Damascus Church Attack: Suicide Bomber Kills 22 In First Major Incident Since Assad’s Fall-Authored by:Naman TrivediUpdated Jun 23, 2025, 05:06 IST

summary-A suicide bomber attacked the Mar Elias Church in Damascus, killing at least 22 and injuring over 63, on Sunday. The attacker, a member of ISIS, opened fire before detonating explosives. This marks the first major bombing since Assad’s fall. Syria’s transitional government faces renewed pressure to protect religious minorities.A devastating suicide bombing struck the Mar Elias Church in the Dweila neighborhood of Damascus, Syria, on Sunday, leaving at least 22 people dead and 63 others wounded, according to health officials and security sources. The attacker, identified by Syria’s interior ministry as a member of the Islamic State (ISIS), entered the Greek Orthodox church during a service. He reportedly opened fire before detonating an explosive vest inside the building. This marks the first successful ISIS suicide bombing in Damascus since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad to an Islamist-led rebellion in December.Security sources revealed that two assailants were involved in the attack, though only one detonated his explosives. Another security official told Reuters this was ISIS’s first successful church attack in the capital following a series of failed attempts since Assad's ouster. The blast caused extensive damage to the church's interior. A livestream from the scene, broadcast by Syria’s civil defence group, the White Helmets, showed bloodstained floors, shattered pews, and collapsed masonry, underscoring the force of the explosion.Rescue operations continued for hours as civil defence teams cleared debris and searched for survivors. In response, Greek authorities strongly condemned the attack. “We unequivocally condemn the abhorrent terrorist suicide bombing at the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in Damascus, Syria,” said the Greek Foreign Ministry in a statement. They also urged Syria’s transitional government to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the protection of Christian and other religious communities.President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who assumed power in January after leading the campaign to overthrow Assad, has pledged to safeguard religious minorities during Syria's transition. Sunday's bombing poses a significant challenge to that promise. The attack also mirrors the Islamic State's targeting of religious minorities during Assad’s rule, including a deadly bombing in 2016 that struck Shiite pilgrims in Sayeda Zainab.

Iran orders closure of Strait of Hormuz — putting one-fifth of world’s oil supply at risk By Anthony Blair and Caitlin Doornbos-Published June 22, 2025

Iran’s parliament has voted to close the Strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping channel through which around 20% of the world’s daily oil flows. The move, which could block $1 billion in oil shipments per day, is likely to send oil prices soaring. It will come into effect pending a final decision by Iran’s Supreme Council. The Supreme Council’s decision must be made by tonight, according to Iran’s state-run Press TV-Iran’s major escalation in response to US strikes on its nuclear facilities “will be done whenever necessary,” Email Kosari, Commander in the Revolutionary Guards, said on Sunday. The strait connecting the Gulf of Oman with the Persian Gulf is one of the world’s most critical chokepoints — just 20 miles wide at its narrowest point.Shipping lanes in the strait  — the area that is deep enough for ships to pass — are even narrower at less than two miles wide in each direction, making them much more vulnerable to attacks and threats of closure. The channel is shallow, making it a particular target for underwater mining, while the narrowness of the strait makes passing vessels vulnerable to attack from shore-based missiles or interception by patrol boats or helicopters.“Iran would most likely pursue a multi-layered asymmetric strategy rather than attempting an outright naval blockade,” Gregg Roman, Executive Director of the Middle East Forum told The Post.“Their primary approach would involve rapidly deploying naval mines across the shipping lanes—this is their most effective tool for immediate disruption. They’d simultaneously launch anti-ship missiles from mobile coastal batteries like their Ghader and Nasir systems, targeting oil tankers from distances up to [185 miles].”“Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said following the attack.Iran has no legal authority to block sea traffic through Hormuz, and any attempts by its navy to bar entry to the strait would likely be met by a strong response.Ships with the US Fifth Fleet, along with other Western navies, are patrolling the area at all times. It is bordered by Iran to the north and Oman and the United Arab Emirates to the south. The bulk of all oil exported by the regional petro giants, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, all travel through this narrow waterway.Asia is likely to bear the brunt most from any closures to the waterway, with China, India, Japan and South Korea all getting most of their oil imports through the strait.China, the world’s biggest buyer of Iranian oil and a critical partner that has previously used its veto power at the UN Security Council to block sanctions or resolutions against Tehran, would be particularly affected by any closure. The move would also hit Iran’s own economy.“Any closure attempt would be temporary and ultimately self-destructive. Iran depends on the strait for its own vital imports and knows that such action would trigger an overwhelming response from the US 5th Fleet, which maintains detailed operational plans for exactly this scenario,” Roman said.“It would amount to economic suicide while alienating China, their primary oil customer. Tehran understands this calculus, which is why the threat remains more valuable as leverage than as an actual course of action.”Iran last disrupted traffic in the Persian Gulf in April last year when it seized an Israel-linked container ship near the Strait of Hormuz, accusing the MSC Aries of violating maritime regulations. In April 2023, Iran seized a US-bound tanker, claiming the ship had struck another vessel. And in May 2022, two Greek tankers were held for six months in what was widely seen as retaliation to the confiscation of Iranian oil on a different ship by Greek and US authorities. In previous years, the Houthi militia in Yemen was able to successfully disrupt traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait leading into the Red Sea on the other side of the Arabian Peninsula.Using the firing of missiles and drones, the Houthis were able to cut ship traffic through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden some 70% in June compared with the average levels in 2022 and 2023, according to Clarkson Research Services Ltd, a unit of the world’s largest shipbroker.Vessel operators have been forced instead to reroute traffic around the southern tip of Africa instead of using the Suez Canal, making journeys for ships traveling between Europe and Asia vastly more expensive and much longer.Iran’s Navy was likely to employ the same tactics previously used by the Houthis, along with cyber attacks and other sabotage operations, Roman added.“The IRGC Navy would execute their proven ‘swarm’ tactics, using hundreds of small, fast boats armed with missiles and explosives to overwhelm defenses,” he said. “We’d also see extensive use of suicide drones and explosive-laden unmanned boats, tactics they’ve perfected through their Houthi proxies in the Red Sea.“Iran would likely pursue several additional avenues: cyber attacks on port infrastructure and shipping navigation systems, activation of regional proxies to create multiple crisis points and stretch U.S. forces, sabotage operations against Saudi and UAE oil facilities, and potentially targeting Gulf states’ desalination plants to pressure them against supporting American operations,” he added.

War Powers Act-HISTORY.com Editors

How has the process of declaring war changed throughout the United States' history? What prompted Congress to enact the War Powers Resolution in the '70s, and what effect did it have? What Spurred Congress to Create the War Powers Act? In the U.S. Constitution, the power to make war is shared by the executive and legislative branches. As commander-in-chief of the military, the president is charged with directing the armed forces. Congress, meanwhile, is vested with the power “to declare war” and “raise and support armies.”These provisions were traditionally interpreted to mean that Congress had to approve American involvement in overseas wars. By the 1970s, however, many lawmakers had grown wary of presidents deploying the armed forces abroad without first consulting Congress.President Harry S. Truman had committed U.S. troops to the Korean War as part of a United Nations “police action,” and Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon had overseen the long and controversial undeclared conflict during the Vietnam War.Legislative efforts to reign in presidential war powers coalesced during the Nixon administration. Disturbed by revelations about the Vietnam conflict—including news that Nixon had been conducting a secret bombing campaign in Cambodia—the House and Senate crafted the War Powers Act as a means of reasserting Congressional authority over foreign wars. Why Did President Nixon Veto the War Powers Act? President Nixon was an early critic of the War Powers Act, and he vetoed the law on the grounds that it was an “unconstitutional and dangerous” check on his duties as commander-in-chief of the military. In a message accompanying his veto, Nixon argued that the resolution “would attempt to take away, by a mere legislative act, authorities which the President has properly exercised under the Constitution for almost 200 years.”Congress overrode Nixon’s veto, but he wasn’t the last chief executive to bristle at the restrictions of the War Powers Act. Since the 1970s, every sitting president has either sidestepped some of the law’s provisions or labeled it unconstitutional. One of the first major challenges to the War Powers Act came in 1981, when President Ronald Reagan deployed military personnel to El Salvador without consulting or submitting a report to Congress. In 1999, President Bill Clinton continued a bombing campaign in Kosovo beyond the 60-day time limit cited in the law.A more recent War Powers Act dispute arose in 2011, when President Barack Obama initiated a military action in Libya without congressional authorization.Members of Congress have occasionally objected to the executive branch’s disregard for the War Powers Act, but attempts to take the issue to court have been unsuccessful. In 2000, for example, the Supreme Court refused to hear a case on whether the law had been violated during military operations in Yugoslavia. Is the War Powers Act Effective? Ever since its passage in 1973, politicians have been divided on the War Powers Act’s effectiveness. Supporters of the resolution maintain that it is a much-needed check on the president’s ability to make war without Congressional approval.Critics, meanwhile, argue the law has failed to create better coordination between the executive and legislative branches. Some believe the law is too restrictive on the president’s ability to respond to foreign emergencies, while others contend that it gives the president free reign to commit troops overseas. Most experts tend to agree that the War Powers Act has rarely worked as intended. According to one study by the Congressional Research Service, presidents have traditionally avoided citing certain provisions of the resolution whenever they submit reports to Congress. As a result, the 60-day time limits of the law have rarely been triggered, and it has never been used to bring an end to a foreign military operation.Because of the War Powers Act’s contentious history, there have occasionally been calls for the resolution to be repealed or amended. One notable attempt came in 1995, when the U.S. House of Representatives voted on an amendment that would have repealed many of the Act’s main components. The measure was narrowly defeated by a vote of 217-204.

US-What Are Sleeper Cells And Why the US Is on High Alert After Strikes In Iran's 3 Nuclear Sites-Edited by:Times Now Digital-Updated Jun 22, 2025, 18:21 IST

United States law enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance of Iran-backed operatives domestically, identifying concerns about Hezbollah-linked sleeper cells in the United States, according to a media report. The heightened vigilance comes after the United States struck three sites in Iran early Sunday. The three key nuclear facilities that US hit are Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Addressing the nation from the White House, President Donald Trump asserted that Iran’s key nuclear were “completely and fully obliterated.”FBI Director Kash Patel has ordered increased monitoring of individuals suspected of being in dormant extremist networks tied to the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah since Israel launched its “Operation Rising Lion” offensive earlier this month, US officials said, as per CBS news.Officials say US intelligence agencies have long viewed Iran’s global reach and its ability to inspire or direct attacks on American soil as a concern, especially after the US assassination of Qasem Soleimani in January 2020. Last year, prosecutors charged an IRGC operative and two Americans with plotting to surveil and assassinate critics of the Iranian government. The IRGC member had reportedly been instructed by senior Iranian officials to target Trump.Agencies including the FBI and Department of Homeland Security continue to allocate significant resources to thwart threats posed by sleeper cells and other covert Iran-connected operatives. What Are Sleeper Cells? Sleeper cells are covert operatives placed within communities who stay inactive for extended periods -- often appearing as ordinary residentsy -- until directed to carry out acts of terrorism, espionage or sabotage.

Desperate Iran ‘may activate sleeper agents in the UK’ in last gasp attempt to beat Israel-Israel's Supreme Leader may be attempting to activate terrorist "sleeper cells" across the West, Middle East experts have said.By Emily Wright, World News Reporter-Fri, Jun 20, 2025

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei may be attempting to activate terrorist "sleeper cells" across the West as he continues to make inflammatory statements rejecting Donald Trump's calls for surrender, Middle Eastern experts have said. According to Henry Jackson Society research fellow Barak Seener, Khamenei may be turning to terrorist Iranian sympathisers across the world as he runs out of traditional resources.Iran has lost far more than Israel has in the war that has plagued the region for the last week. “The very fact now that the Iranian regime is volatile, it’s targeted, and it’s highly vulnerable — that’s what actually makes it increasingly dangerous to the West, in that it has nothing to lose it has this about this sense of nihilism, and it affects the rational calculus,” Mr Seener explained during a call with reporters hosted by the America-Middle East Press Association. On Wednesday, Khamenei rejected the US President's calls for Tehran to give up its nuclear program, labelling the president's demands "absurd rhetoric" while refusing to back down.TOPSHOT-IRAN-MILITARY-MISSILE-“The US entering in this matter is 100% to its own detriment,” Mr Seener said. “The damage it will suffer will be far greater than any harm that Iran may encounter.”However, Israeli military experts have said that Iran is rapidly running out of ballistic missiles and missile launchers, meaning it is becoming difficult for Tehran to follow through on any conventional threat to the US.Additionally, Israel has effectively defeated Tehran's proxy groups - such as Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon - since Hamas's attack on Israel in October 2023, leaving the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) almost alone in its fight, Mr Seener added.

IRANIAN PROXIES-Iranian proxies are militant groups that Iran supports and uses to extend its influence and conduct operations in various regions, particularly in the Middle East. Notable examples include Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza, and various militias in Iraq and Yemen, which Iran funds and trains to carry out its strategic objectives.

Tel Aviv (AFP) June 22, 2025-First responders fanned out across Israel Sunday following fresh waves of Iranian missile strikes that left pockets of devastation in their wake -- as the Islamic republic hit back after a US attack on its nuclear sites. In both Haifa and areas around Tel Aviv, the scenes were all too similar.Rubble filled streets at impact sites as the facades of apartment buildings were eviscerated by the falling projectiles, as rescue teams picked through the debris looking for people. In the Ramat Aviv neighbourhood near Tel Aviv, the mere skeletons of homes were left standing following the barrage, with the wooden frames visible amid a sea of debris. As the country was jolted awake by air raid sirens warning residents of air attacks, many in Ramat Aviv left their shelters later to discover the destruction.A man and woman embraced each other and cried."Our entire house was destroyed -- there's nothing left," said Aviad Chernichovsky, who had rushed out of his home to get to a shelter.Several elderly residents were placed on chairs and beds to allow for medical evacuation. One woman, injured in the face, appeared anxious as paramedics led her away from the rubble.Officials were still taking stock of the damage."Houses here were hit very, very badly," Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai said at the scene."Those who were in the shelter are all safe and well. The damage is very, very extensive, but in terms of human life, we are okay."- Devastating power -The Israeli police said in a statement that they had been deployed to at least two other impact sites, one in Haifa in the north and another in Ness Ziona, south of Tel Aviv.A public square in a residential area of Haifa was left strewn with rubble and surrounding shops and homes were heavily damaged.Palm trees withstood the impact in a small public garden, while storefronts were bent, shop windows shattered, and air conditioners left dangling from building facades.Sirens however did not sound in this area. Authorities said they were actively working to clarify what happened."The possibility of a malfunction with the interceptor (of the air defence system) is under investigation," said an army spokesperson. Two salvos of missiles were launched at Israel from around 7:30 am (0430 GMT), the Israeli military said.Iran has been firing daily missile barrages at Israel for over a week, since a wide-ranging Israeli attack on the Islamic republic's nuclear installations and military bases triggered war.Israel's sophisticated air defences have intercepted more than 450 missiles along with around 1,000 drones, according to the latest figures from the Israeli military.Even still, at least 50 impacts have been officially acknowledged nation-wide with the country's air defence batteries unable to prevent all of the strikes.Iran's armed forces said Sunday's barrage targeted multiple sites in Israel including Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv, and relied on some of their most sophisticated long-range missiles with "devastating warhead power".

Iran-Israel war: latest developments by AFP Staff Writers.

Jerusalem (AFP) June 22, 2025-President Donald Trump said the US military carried out strikes Sunday on three Iranian nuclear sites and that Tehran "must now agree to end this war", following days of speculation over whether the United States would join its ally Israel's bombing campaign. As the Iran-Israel war entered its 10th day, here are the latest developments:- US intervention -Trump said the US military carried out a "very successful attack" on three Iranian nuclear sites, including the underground uranium enrichment facility at Fordo."We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform, referring to Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz."A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site," Fordo, he said, adding the planes were safely out of Iranian airspace and on the way home.Iranian media said the Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz nuclear sites were hit.Ahead the US strikes, The New York Times and specialist plane tracking sites said American B-2 stealth bombers had left a base in the United States and flown across the Pacific. The B-2 can carry America's heaviest payloads, including the bunker-busting GBU-57 -- the only weapon capable of destroying Iran's deeply buried nuclear facility in Fordo.Trump said that, after the strikes, Iran "must now agree to end this war", insisting that under no circumstances should Iran possess a nuclear weapon.Israel raised its alert level after the strikes, permitting only essential activities until further notice, the military announced.- Iran says US decided to 'blow up' diplomacy with strikes -Iran's top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, accused the United States of deciding to "blow up", diplomacy with its intervention into the war alongside Israel. In a post on X, Araghchi said Israel blew up negotiations between Tehran and Washington with its strikes on June 13, while the United States did the same to talks with European powers this week with its strikes on Sunday.Addressing European calls for Iran to return to negotiations, he asked: "How can Iran return to something it never left?"Speaking later at a news conference in Istanbul, he said the United States and Israel had crossed a "big red line" by attacking Iran's nuclear sites."There is no red line that they have not crossed. And the last one, and the most dangerous one, happened only last night. They crossed a very big red line by attacking nuclear facilities," said Araghchi.- Iran and Israel exchange missile salvos -Iran's armed forces said they targeted multiple sites in Israel including Ben Gurion airport, after US attacks on key nuclear sites. The targets included the airport, a "biological research centre", logistics bases and various layers of command and control centres, it said, quoted by Fars news agency.IRNA news agency said 40 missiles were fired in the "20th wave" of Iranian strikes. At least 23 people were hurt and police said at least three impacts were reported."Houses here were hit very, very badly," Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai told reporters at the scene. "Fortunately, one of them was slated for demolition and reconstruction, so there were no residents inside."Those who were in the shelter are all safe and well. The damage is very, very extensive, but in terms of human life, we are okay."The Israeli military said it had launched its own fresh waves of strikes in western Iran and in Qom, south of Tehran, IRNA reported four Revolutionary Guard members were killed in strikes on a military base in the north of the city.- UN nuclear watchdog says 'no increase' in radiation -The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency said it had not detected any increase in radiation levels at key nuclear sites in Iran following the US strikes."Following attacks on three nuclear sites in Iran... the IAEA can confirm that no increase in off-site radiation levels has been reported as of this time," the watchdog said on X.The UN body's head, Rafael Grossi, said the IAEA would hold an "emergency meeting" at the organisation's headquarters in Vienna on Monday in response to the US strikes.burs-csp

Did the US strikes succeed, and how will Iran respond?

Dubai, June 22 (AFP) Jun 22, 2025-The United States' strikes Sunday on Iranian nuclear sites raised two major questions: how effective were they, and what will Iran do next? US President Donald Trump said the air raids "totally obliterated" the main nuclear sites, calling them a "spectacular military success".So far, Tehran has given little away about its response, although Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the United States had "crossed a very big red line".AFP looks at the impact of the attacks and the possible next steps.- What was the effect of the strikes? -The United States targeted Iran's three main nuclear sites including Fordo, a uranium enrichment facility buried 90 metres (about 300 feet) underground.US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the strikes "devastated the Iranian nuclear programme".The extent of the damage has not been confirmed, but there is speculation nuclear material had already been moved away.Heloise Fayet, a nuclear expert at the Institut Francais des Relations Internationales, said satellite images showing activity around Fordo "suggest enriched uranium stock may therefore have been transferred to sites not monitored by the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency)"."We previously had knowledge, albeit imperfect, of the programme thanks to the agency's inspections; now no inspections are possible," she told AFP."As for Iran's technical expertise, it cannot be destroyed, knowing that thousands of people have participated in Iran's nuclear programme."Andreas Krieg, a senior lecturer at King's College London, called the US action a "high-risk operation that delivers unpredictable outcomes", given the facility was deep underground."Trump has been using OSINT (open-source intelligence) accounts to say Fordo is gone while the Iranians claim there is only surface-level destruction."Ali Vaez, Iran project director for the International Crisis Group, said destroying Fordo "won't necessarily end Iran's nuclear programme."Tehran has produced hundreds of advanced centrifuges in the past few years that are stored in unknown locations," he said.- What is Iran's next move? -According to Krieg, Iran will seek a "calibrated response -- loud enough to resonate, but measured enough to contain".Michael A. Horowitz, a geopolitics and security analyst, said its options included attacking US assets, closing the Strait of Hormuz -- a vital conduit for the world oil trade -- or even attacking energy facilities in the Gulf, which hosts several US military bases."None of those are good options that achieve anything -- this is mostly about saving face," he posted on X."The risks, on the other hand, are great."However, Horowitz said there were other ways to respond, including a limited retaliation against the US before returning to strikes against Israel and finally negotiating a settlement. The Iranian government now realises its very existence is at stake, said Renad Mansour, senior research fellow at the Chatham House think-tank, casting it back to the days of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war."It's survival mode," he said, predicting "more violence" in the short-term with the prospect of a "managed de-escalation" and eventual negotiations.Hamidreza Ali, visiting fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, said Iran might even allow Trump a "symbolic win" and retaliate against Israeli targets instead."This keeps Washington out of the war while intensifying pressure on Tel Aviv. The risk of drawing the US further in would now rest on Trump's next move," he posted on X."If Trump continues to strike Iran without new provocation, it looks more like going to war on Israel's behalf. That's politically costly, given domestic opposition to war with Iran."Meanwhile, Iran could deny knowledge of what happened to its enriched uranium, avoiding IAEA inspections, and later leave the Nuclear Non-Profiferation Treaty."Trump may have scored a tactical win, but if Iran plays this smart, they hand him a political grenade," Ali wrote."All while shifting the nuclear game into murkier, more dangerous territory."burs-th/dv

86 wounded by Iranian missile attacks on Israel after US strikes 3 Iran nuclear sites-Broad devastation at impact sites in Tel Aviv and nearby Ness Ziona; failed Israeli interceptor crashes in Haifa; IDF destroys primed Iranian launchers, foiling larger attack By Emanuel Fabian,Diana Bletter and Naomi Lanzkron-Today, 2:16 pm-JUN 22,25

An Iranian ballistic missile barrage injured dozens of people in Israel on Sunday morning as nearly 30 projectiles targeted the country, causing widespread destruction to residential areas in Tel Aviv and the central town of Ness Ziona. An Israeli air defense interceptor, meanwhile, malfunctioned and impacted the northern city of Haifa, causing damage and slightly wounding three people. No sirens had sounded in the city during the incident. The Health Ministry reported that among those who arrived at hospitals were two in moderate condition, 77 in good condition, four victims suffering from acute anxiety, and three more people who were undergoing medical evaluation and whose condition had not been immediately determined.Ichilov Medical Center in Tel Aviv said there were two children among the five people who arrived at its emergency room with minor injuries. The injuries were largely at the two impact sites in Tel Aviv and its Ness Ziona suburb, according to medical officials. One man was moderately hurt by shrapnel on the Route 431 highway, near Be’er Yaakov in central Israel. The Iranian attack came hours after the United States bombed three key nuclear sites in Iran, joining an Israeli air campaign against Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure that began on June 13.Iran has responded to the Israeli attacks with near-daily barrages of missiles at cities, killing 24 people and wounding thousands, according to health officials and hospitals. At least 27 missiles were launched from Iran in Sunday morning’s attack in two salvos, the military said, setting off sirens in north and central regions, as well as Jerusalem, between 7:30 and around 8 a.m.The first salvo consisted of at least 22 missiles, and the second was made up of five, according to IDF assessments.Shortly after the barrage, the IDF said it struck the missile launchers used in the attack. The military added that before the attack, the air force bombed eight other ballistic missile launchers, including six that were primed for an immediate attack on Israel, foiling a larger barrage.According to the IDF, the strikes on the primed ballistic missile launchers eliminated several Iranian soldiers at the launch sites. The IDF released footage of the strikes. The Home Front Command said it was investigating whether Iran used a cluster bomb warhead in the attack, as it did last week, but did not initially find evidence that this was the case.In Tel Aviv, skeletons of homes were left standing following the barrage, with the wooden frames visible amid a sea of debris.Emergency services were still working to evacuate residents over an hour after the barrage. The situation was complicated by the fact that a large elder care facility was damaged in the attack.“There was a massive explosion. Everything shook. I don’t know what happened,” a tearful witness told The Times of Israel at the site.Dazed families walked around carrying small bags with their important possessions, as security forces moved them away from the scene, citing concerns of falling debris or a building collapse.“Houses here were hit very, very badly,” Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai said at the scene. “Those who were in the shelter are all safe and well. The damage is very, very extensive, but in terms of human life, we are okay.”Huldai said that a building badly damaged by the impact was empty of residents as it was in the midst of a refurbishment project. The entire front of the broad, four-story building appeared to have been blown off.Eran, whose home was hit in Ness Ziona, told Channel 13 that together with his family he had retreated to their home’s safe room.“We heard a boom and the whole house shook, but the safe room remained intact,” he said.Eran noted that the family dog was injured in the attack and taken to a veterinarian hospital for treatment.Iran’s armed forces later said they targeted multiple sites in Israel, including Ben Gurion Airport, after the US attacked key nuclear sites in the Islamic Republic. The airport near Tel Aviv is the main international air gateway to the country.“The twentieth wave of Operation Honest Promise 3 began using a combination of long-range liquid and solid fuel missiles with devastating warhead power,” the Iranian armed forces said in a statement quoted by Fars news agency. The targets included the airport, a “biological research center,” logistics bases, and various layers of command and control centers, it said.Failed interceptor explosion in Haifa-The IDF Home Front Command said it suspected that an Israeli air defense interceptor malfunctioned and crashed in Haifa during the Iranian attack, which was the reason for the warning sirens not sounding. An early warning was issued via the cell broadcast system in Haifa, but no sirens sounded as no ballistic missiles were headed for the city, the Home Front Command said.“This is not a malfunction in the warning system,” the IDF said, adding that the incident was under investigation.A public square in a residential area of the city was left strewn with rubble, and surrounding shops and homes were heavily damaged.Palm trees withstood the impact in a small public garden, while storefronts were bent, shop windows shattered, and air conditioners left dangling from building facades. The impact wounded three people, who were in good condition, according to medics, and caused some damage.Drone attack-In addition to the missiles, two drones apparently launched from Iran at Israel were shot down by the Israeli Air Force during the morning, the IDF said. The drones had triggered sirens in the southern Arava region.Drones take several hours to reach Israel from Iran, meaning they were likely launched before the US bombed Iran’s nuclear sites.Overnight, the IAF and Navy intercepted some 30 drones launched from Iran at Israel, the military said. The military said the IAF also struck dozens of drones in Iran before they were launched at Israel. The IDF released footage showing the drone interceptions and strikes on drones in Iran.—@idfonline) June 22, 2025Since the start of the war with Iran, over 500 drones launched at Israel have been shot down, according to the IDF.IDF hits Iranian jets, weapon sites, air defenses-Israel kept up its air campaign against Iran’s military overnight and Sunday, with the air force bombing two Iranian F-5 fighter jets at Dezful Airport in Iran during the morning, the military said. The F-5 is a US fighter jet produced by the Northrop Corporation. They were sold to Iran in the 1970s.The military said that strikes Saturday night carried out by 20 fighter jets in central Iran hit dozens of military targets. The targets included “a military site containing components for the production of explosives, sites for the storage and production of weapons, and Iranian air defense systems,” along with military infrastructure at Isfahan Airport, to prevent the Iranian Air Force from using the site’s military facilities,” the IDF said.Israel says its sweeping assault, which began last Friday, on Iran’s top military leaders, nuclear scientists, uranium enrichment sites, and ballistic missile program is necessary to prevent the Islamic Republic from realizing its avowed plan to destroy the Jewish state.Iran has retaliated by launching over 500 ballistic missiles and around 1,000 drones at Israel. Most of the missiles and nearly all of the drones have been intercepted by air defense systems.Times of Israel staff and agencies contributed to this report.

IDF recovers bodies of three slain hostages from Gaza in military operation-Families say they’re comforted by retrieval of bodies of Ofra Keidar, Jonathan Samerano, and Staff Sgt. Shay Levinson, murdered and abducted by Hamas in Oct. 7 onslaught-By Emanuel Fabian-and ToI Staff Today, 2:35 pm-JUN 22,25

The bodies of three slain hostages, Ofra Keidar, Jonathan Samerano, and Staff Sgt. Shay Levinson, were recovered in a joint military and Shin Bet operation from the Gaza Strip, the IDF announced Sunday morning. The operation to recover the bodies was carried out by the Gaza Division, and was “enabled by precise intelligence” obtained by the military’s Hostages Headquarters unit, the Military Intelligence Directorate and the Shin Bet, the IDF said. The three bodies were brought to Israel for identification at the Abu Kabir forensic institute, after which their families were notified.Keidar, 71, was murdered by Hamas-led terrorists while on an early morning walk near her home in Kibbutz Be’eri during the October 7, 2023, onslaught. Her body was then abducted to Gaza. The slain kibbutznik was remembered by friends and family as a lover of exercise who always took her daily morning walk, loved gardening, swimming and animals — and worked for decades in the kibbutz’s dairy farm, milking cows.Shmil Talker, who worked with Ofra at Be’eri’s animal section, said she had “retired long ago, but never missed a day of work, arriving early every morning.”“Ofra was physically so strong that it was really hard to keep up with her. Despite the attempts to slow down her pace, it was clear that nothing would help and we would all need to match her pace instead,” he said.Keidar’s husband, Sami Keidar, was killed by Hamas terrorists on the sofa in his home, according to relatives. Suffering from Parkinson’s, he was unable to reach the family’s safe room in time. His caregiver was also wounded by Hamas gunfire. The couple’s 41-year-old daughter, Yael Keidar, was in her parents’ house at the time, but survived the onslaught by hiding in their safe room, emerging only after it had become quiet outside.Ofra and Sami Keidar were survived by Yael and sons Elad and Oren, as well as seven grandchildren and several siblings.“There is comfort, we will finally have a proper grave to visit — this is good news,” Elad Keidar told Army Radio following the retrieval of his mother’s body.Samerano, 22, who lived in Tel Aviv, was attending the Nova music festival when the Hamas onslaught began. That morning, he fled the rave to Be’eri with two friends, where they were murdered and his body abducted. Over 360 people were killed at the rave.Footage from kibbutz security cameras captured Hamas terrorists loading him into a jeep and driving toward Gaza. His death was confirmed in December 2023.The slain hostage’s father, Kobi Samerano, said that his son’s body was recovered on what would have been his son’s 23rd Hebrew birthday.“Yesterday was Yonati’s Hebrew birthday. On his 23rd birthday, on the very day he was born, our Yonati was rescued in a heroic operation by the brave soldiers of the IDF and the Shin Bet,” Kobi Samerano wrote on Instagram, using a diminutive of his full name.“Yonati, we were blessed to live by your side for 21 and a half years of light,” he continued. “You have returned to us, beloved son, wrapped in the light of heroism, of faith, of a nation united.”One of Samerano’s captors was an employee of UNRWA, the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees. He was one of 12 people employed by the agency who “actively participated” in the Hamas-led onslaught, then-defense minister Yoav Gallant revealed to the public in February 2024.Samerano’s mother, Ayelet, became active for a time in the movement to bring back the hostages, living and dead, from Gaza.At a summit organized by the pro-Israel monitoring group UN Watch, Samerano demanded to meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Geneva, where the conference was held.“Mr. Guterres, look at my eyes and answer me now — where is my son?” the grieving mother said at the International Summit for a Future Beyond UNRWA.“How can the UN pay this man who dragged my son’s limp body along the ground and then picked him up as if he were a prize into Gaza. How many more lives have been ruined by this person, hauling my son like he isn’t even a human being into an UNRWA car?” she lamented.UNRWA fired all 12 employees implicated in the massacre when the allegations surfaced.Samerano is survived by his parents and his brother Yair.Levinson, 19, was a tank commander stationed on the Gaza border on the morning of the onslaught. He was killed while battling the invading Hamas terrorists near the Nova rave, and his body was abducted to the Strip.A resident of Givat Avni, a small northern community near Tiberias, Levinson was described as an excellent student, kindhearted and sociable. He played volleyball in Israel’s top league for Eilabun, a nearby Arab town.Levinson’s friend Ofir Hauptmann recalled the slain soldier as the “social glue” of their friend group.“I lost a close friend, an optimist, who I always consulted with on everything because he enlisted a round before me in the Armored Corps,” he said in January 2024, as quoted by Ynet. “Everyone wanted to be around him. It’s really hard for me to talk about him in the past tense. I’m speaking, and it just doesn’t feel real.”Israel Volleyball Association chairperson Rina Dor said Levinson was “a volleyball player with a bright future ahead of him.”“There’s a feeling of pain — he returned in a way we never wanted him to — but at least he’s here, at least he’s receiving a proper burial,” said Levinson’s childhood friend Maayan. “He’ll be buried near his home. I know how much he loved the area where we live — it’s the small honor he deserves.”‘Window of opportunity’ for a hostage deal-The Hostages and Missing Families Forum welcomed the return of the bodies of three slain captives in a statement in which it also urged the government to use the Iran war’s momentum to secure a deal to free the remaining hostages.“We wish to express our deep gratitude to the IDF and security forces who acted with dedication and courage,” the forum said in a statement. “The return of all the hostages is an essential condition for the process of national healing and recovery.”It urged the government to take advantage of the severe blows dealt to Iran, the main backer of the Hamas terror group, to reach a hostage deal.“We want to emphasize that bringing back the remaining 50 hostages is the key to achieving any sort of victory,” the forum said. “There is a historic window of opportunity — the significant regional achievements enable Israel to end the war from a position of clear strength.“The return of all hostages through a comprehensive deal — this is in Israel’s interest, this is the next stage, and this is the victory of this war. There will be no victory until the last hostage returns,” the forum’s statement continued.Terror groups in the Gaza Strip are still holding 50 hostages, including 49 of the 251 abducted by Hamas-led terrorists on October 7, 2023.They include the bodies of at least 28 confirmed dead by the IDF. Twenty are believed to be alive and there are grave concerns for the well-being of two others, Israeli officials have said. Hamas is also holding the body of an IDF soldier killed in 2014 in Gaza. The October 7, 2023, attack saw some 3,000 Hamas-led terrorists burst across the border into Israel from Gaza by land, air and sea, killing some 1,200 people and seizing 251 hostages of all ages — mostly civilians — under the cover of a deluge of thousands of rockets fired at Israeli towns and cities.

Hegseth says US strikes ‘obliterated’ Iran’s nuclear ambitions; now Iran should negotiate-US attack was ‘intentionally limited’ to nuclear targets and not aimed at regime change, says Pentagon chief; top general assesses damage at 3 sites hit as ‘extremely severe’By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 5:55 pm-JUN 22,25

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Sunday that US military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities were an incredible and overwhelming success that “obliterated” Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. As Washington warned Tehran against responding to the strikes, Hegseth also said that the US did “not seek war” with Iran or regime change, that the strikes were “international limited” to Iran’s nuclear facilities, and that the regime should now negotiate peace. The US strikes employed 14 bunker-buster bombs, more than two dozen Tomahawk missiles and over 125 military aircraft, in an operation the top US general Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said was named “Operation Midnight Hammer.”The strikes targeted three nuclear facilities, most notably the deep underground Fordo site, which necessitated the use of massive, earth-penetrating bombs that Israeli jets cannot carry. Also targeted were the Natanz and Isfahan nuclear facilities, which according to the Pentagon were hit by submarine-launched cruise missiles. The operation came after more than a week of strikes by Israel that damaged Iran’s nuclear facilities, eradicated the country’s air defenses, and took out many of its military brass and top nuclear scientists.Iran, in retaliation, has launched dozens of ballistic missile barrages at Israel. Two volleys fired a few hours after the US joined the campaign caused widespread destruction in several locations in central Israel and the Haifa area.“Iran’s nuclear ambitions have been obliterated,” Hegseth told a Pentagon press briefing,“We devastated the Iranian nuclear program,” Hegseth said, adding that the operation “did not target Iranian troops or the Iranian people.”Speaking after the secretary, Caine said the initial assessment was that “all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction.”Also speaking on Sunday, Vice President JD Vance told NBC News that the strikes “destroyed the Iranian nuclear program, I think we set that program back substantially,” but specified that the US is “not at war with Iran, we’re at war with Iran’s nuclear program.”“No other country on planet Earth” could have conducted the operation, Hegseth added.Israel, he noted, has had “incredible” military success — at the beginning of its attacks “and ongoing” — in degrading Iranian capabilities. He said it has been “incredible to watch what our ally Israel has been able to do.”“Part of this operation was the defense of Israel, and the ongoing defense of Israel,” Hegseth said.Hegseth said the operation involved considerable advance planning, “misdirection” and security, and that the US bombers went “in and out without the world knowing.”He added that the attacks marked the “first operational involvement” of the MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator), the huge 30,000-pound bunker-busting bombs that only US planes can carry. The use of the heavy ground-penetrating bombs was seen as a key element in causing significant damage to Iran’s Fordo nuclear facility, buried deep under a mountain west of Tehran.Caine said the goal of the operation — destroying nuclear sites in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan — had been achieved.“Final battle damage will take some time, but initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction,” Caine said.Caine said the “main strike package comprised of seven B-2 Spirit bombers” flying 18 hours from the US mainland to Iran with multiple aerial refuelings.“Iran’s fighters did not fly, and it appears that Iran’s surface to air missile systems did not see us throughout the mission. We retained the element of surprise,” Caine added.Caine said the deployment of US bombers over the Pacific yesterday was a “decoy,” part of a wider deception effort known to only a limited number of the operation’s planners.A Pentagon-provided map of the flight path taken by B-2 stealth bombers indicated that their approach to Iran took them over the Mediterranean and then over Israel, Jordan and Iraq.It is not immediately clear when those three countries were made aware of the flights. Israel has said the US strikes were carried out in coordination with its military. The US said the strikes did not involve Israeli jets.Iran said following the attacks that it did not detect the leak of any nuclear material.“There is no danger to the people living on the outskirts of our nuclear areas,” spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said on state television. “The people of Natanz, Isfahan and Fordo can continue their lives.”Earlier, US President Donald Trump said Washington would hit more targets if Tehran did not capitulate.Hours later, Iran launched two waves of attacks against Israel.“Iran the bully of the Middle East must now make peace,” Trump said, warning future attacks would be “far greater” unless a diplomatic solution was reached.“Remember, there are many targets left,” he added.Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told reporters in Istanbul the United States and Israel had “crossed a very big red line,” asserting Iran would continue to defend itself “by all means necessary.”But Hegseth offered the Iranians an off-ramp, saying that Trump “seeks peace, and Iran should take that path.”“This mission was not, and has not, been about regime change,” he added. “The president authorized a precision operation to neutralize the threats to our national interests posed by the Iranian nuclear program and the collective self-defense of our troops and our ally Israel.”“I would just say, as the president has directed and made clear, this is most certainly not open-ended,” and that “the scope of this was intentionally limited.”However, “the capabilities of the American military are nearly unlimited,” Hegseth added, and thus Iran should “take the path of negotiated peace.”The US has made clear to the Iranians, he said, that “this was about nuclear sites, nuclear capabilities.”Israel’s role-Hegseth hailed US overall coordination with Israel, but said “this strike was US-operated and US-led.”Israel, he noted, has had “incredible” military success — at the beginning of its attacks “and ongoing” — in degrading Iranian capabilities. He said it had been “incredible to watch what our ally Israel has been able to do.”“Part of this operation was the defense of Israel, and the ongoing defense of Israel,” Hegseth said.Caine added that the US strikes “took advantage of some of the preparatory work that’s been done over the past week and a half in terms of access and approach” and that “we made sure we were not in the same piece of air space and sky” as Israel.Israel says its sweeping assault, which began last Friday, on Iran’s top military leaders, nuclear scientists, uranium enrichment sites, and ballistic missile program is necessary to prevent the Islamic Republic from realizing its avowed plan to destroy the Jewish state.Iran, which avowedly seeks Israel’s destruction, has consistently denied seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. However, it has enriched uranium to levels that have no peaceful application, has obstructed international inspectors from checking its nuclear facilities, and expanded its ballistic missile capabilities. Israel says it has recently taken steps toward weaponization.Iran has retaliated by launching over 500 ballistic missiles and around 1,000 drones at Israel. So far, Iran’s missile attacks have killed 24 people and wounded thousands in Israel, according to health officials and hospitals. Some of the missiles that have not been intercepted by Israeli air defenses have hit apartment buildings, a university and a hospital, causing heavy damage.

Macron says Europe must become 'space power' again by AFP Staff Writers.

Le Bourget, France (AFP) June 20, 2025-President Emmanuel Macron said Friday that Europe must again become a global space power, warning that France risked being squeezed out of the global low-orbit satellite constellation market.Macron spoke at the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget outside the French capital a day after France more than doubled its stake in satellite operator Eutelsat, the EU rival to Elon Musk's Starlink.Macron called for more investment as the European space industry struggles to remain competitive in the face of US and Chinese rivals."SpaceX has disrupted the market, Amazon is also getting involved. China is not far behind, and I think we all need to be very clear-headed," Macron said.Europe must become "a space power once again, with France at its heart", he said.He warned that Europeans were "on the verge of being completely" squeezed out of the low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation market.Orbiting just a few hundred kilometres above the Earth, low Earth orbit satellite networks can play a crucial role in various fields including telecommunications, emergency response, space exploration, and defence.Growing geopolitical tensions have forced countries to focus on the independence of their satellite infrastructure.Macron said France and its partners should not be reliant on non-European constellations in low orbit, calling it "madness".He called non-European players to team up with France."This must be the solution for our major strategic partners in the Gulf, India, Canada and Brazil," he said."We really need to succeed in increasing our collective investment effort," Macron added, noting the importance of private investors and public-private collaboration. He also said France planned to organise a space summit in early 2026 to "mobilise our public and private partners across the globe."As part of the overall deal with other investors worth 1.35 billion euros ($1.5 billion), the French state is set to become Eutelsat's largest shareholder. The European satellite operator is vying to be seen as an alternative to Starlink, as companies in Europe and elsewhere look askance at Musk's manoeuvrings and seek to secure sovereign solutions.Boasting more than 600 satellites since merging with British firm OneWeb in 2023, Eutelsat is the world's second-largest operator of low Earth orbit satellites, behind Starlink.
