London-based identity verification firm Sumsub has incorporated enhanced deepfake detection technology into its existing biometric liveness detection solution.Sumsub’s liveness technology looks to detect spoofing attempts during the KYC process, by ensuring users are physically present by collecting their face biometric data and then creating a 3D FaceMap. This is then continuously referenced when authorizing future actions, such as transactions or logins.With the new update, the deepfake fraud detector will integrate directly with Sumsub’s liveness solution.To accompany the move, the company also released a variety of statistics covering the relative prevalence of deepfake fraud worldwide.The research found that in 2022, Spain was by far the global ‘leader’ in deep fake fraud accounting for 49.7 percent of all cases internationally, followed by the UK with 9.3 percent and the U.S. with 4.2 percent.In Q1 2023, the most deep fakes came from Great Britain and Spain which suffered 11.8 percent and 11.2 percent of all global deepfake fraud, respectively.This was followed by Germany and the Netherlands which had 6.7 percent of cases and 4.7 percent of cases respectively.The U.S. held fifth place and had 4.3 percent of global deep fake fraud cases.From 2022 to Q1 2023, the proportion of deepfakes among all fraud types reportedly increased in Canada by 4,500 percent, the U.S. by 1,200 percent, Germany by 407 percent, and the UK by 392 percent.Last quarter, a high proportion of deepfakes out of all fraud types was also noticed in Australia, Argentina, and China.It’s not just Sumsub that is rolling out new tools to combat the rising threat of deepfake fraud.ElevenLabs earlier this week unveiled a new tool that will allow users to upload any audio sample to identify if it contains audio generated with the company’s AI.The latest move comes after Sumsub recently announced a full-scale pivot of its business offering.Sumsub says it is transforming from a KYC provider to a biometric platform providing “full-cycle verificatio” for the whole user journey.The new platform will combine user and business verification, transaction monitoring, fraud prevention, and case management solutions into a single dashboard, the company says.Some parties have been keen to argue for the potential usefulness of digital identity in potentially preventing this type of generative AI-based fraud.During the recent semi-annual report of the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection, the organization’s director Rohit Chopra, answered questions from members of Congress, where the risks of generative AI were highlighted.On the topic, Chopra said: “This identity verification issue, I think if we can solve that as a core part of the infrastructure in our country, we could actually reduce a lot of fraud as well.”He adds that: “The benefits would be big also for market participants.”“You can see in jurisdictions where they have implemented this digital layer they get a lot of benefit from it.”Sumsub has been bulking up its solution offering in 2023. The World Bank says in a blog post that even before the pandemic, 92 percent of small businesses in the nation lacked access to formal credit, but the county is on the right track to address this market barrier.India’s Account Aggregator (AA) architecture is a part of the nation’s Digital Public Infrastructure that can help underserved businesses and individuals access financial institutions, World Bank Consultant Siddharth Dixit writes.India currently uses a data-fiduciary-centric model. This means that individuals or businesses would need to go to the original keeper of their data to gain access, inhibiting the potential for data to be used for financial empowerment. Current financial data storage methods are also inefficient and pose privacy threats.The AA architecture will give individuals complete control over their data by ensuring the electronic transfer of data is standardized format. This also makes it easier to transfer information between institutions. The architecture could have an impact on how financial data is shared comparable to the impact UPIs has had on money transfers.AAs can transform lending by overcoming predominant barriers. The architecture can use data as collateral in cases where potential borrowers would lack physical collateral. It would also standardize and secure data sharing as well as lower costs.While only eight banks were a part of the AA ecosystem when it first launched, today, roughly 200 financial institutions are active. This includes all public and private banks as well as some insurance companies. So far in the 2023 fiscal year, roughly $750 million was dispersed using the AA framework, with 50 percent of lending going to the MSME sector.Originally introduced and made live in 2021, the AA architecture falls under the Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture (DEPA) layer, the third of a three-layered system. There is a growing list of Apple proprietary services and accounts that require sign-in, and Apple’s move will make that process easier.IT industry stalwart publication Computerworld, says Apple is after workplace business with this move. Specifically, Managed Apple IDs now will support syncing that is similar to what is enabled on mobile devices.Also, it looks like executives noticed how desktop hardware has been forgotten when it comes to Face and Touch ID. They have been granted a U.S. patent for fingerprint biometrics on Macs, according to MacRumors.In fact, the publication notes that this patent is based on original protection awarded in 2008 that showed biometric ID protection for Mac-like hardware. Recognition data listed were eyes, nose, mouth and chin.In the new patent (11676373), Face ID is described as enabling access to email.

The algorithms are going to be “as transformative as electricity.”Schumer’s most immediate projects are a framework and “an all-hands-on-deck effort in the Senate.”His framework, which providentially can spell out SAFE Innovation for its name, is designed to promote security, accountability, foundational values like democracy, explainability and innovation.Democrats control the Senate, so they stand a chance to coordinate a lot of hand-waving on the topic.Democrats in the Republican-held House, however, will have a much harder time making progress on regulating AI. They are proposing a law that would create a commission to study regulating AI.“Congress must not stay on the sidelines,” Rep. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration has installed five of its new credential authentication terminals from Idemia to process travellers with face biometrics at Denver International Airport’s North Security Checkpoint.The test deployment bring TSA’s CAT2 devices to 16 airports in total, an agency spokesperson told local publication Westword in an email.Idemia Identity & Security North America won a $128 million contract with TSA earlier this year to deliver its CAT2 ID document and face biometrics scanners to airports across the country.Westword brings up concerns about the accuracy of facial recognition for people with darker skin and with appearances significantly changed since their ID photos were taken. Those concerns are in part addressed by the testing the Department of Homeland Security’s Science & Technology Directorate has carried out with its Biometric Technology Rally. Idemia I&S was matching 99.7 percent of individuals without masks back in 2021, and some but not all systems tested in the 2022 Rally met the threshold met the benchmark set for all skin tones.A bigger issue for travellers using the automated system may be from Colorado IDs, which are not being accepted by CAT machines, according to The Colorado Sun.Colorado driver’s licenses and other IDs are made by Thales, and travellers recount situations in which they are repeatedly rejected by first-generation CAT scanners at airports other than Denver International. Issues were reported scanning Colorado licenses both at airports within the state and elsewhere in the U.S.The TSA says travellers with a valid boarding pass and driver’s license will not be prevented from passing through the checkpoints. The Colorado Department of Revenue, which is responsible for the state’s IDs, says the problem is not on its end.

As the technology and market for it mature, evaluations like one just completed by Neurotechnology go from indications of readiness to important data for decision-makers.Apple’s latest consumer electronics device, the Vision Pro virtual reality headset, uses iris biometrics, adding Optic ID to the company’s established biometrics brands, Touch ID and Face ID.Worldcoin has continued to raise hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for its project combining iris biometrics, digital identity and cryptocurrency.National ID programs like those in Pakistan, Togo and Jordan are building in iris to enable high accuracy identity verification and deduplication at scale. In the Philippines, electoral authority Comelec has begun pushing for iris to be included in voter registration after finding half a million duplicates on its voter rolls.As these and other important programs adopt the modality, the importance of independent testing grows.Neurotechnology scores high marks in NIST evaluation-Neurotechnology recently submitted its latest iris recognition algorithm to the NIST IREX 10 evaluation, scoring single-eye accuracy of 99.14 percent and two-eye accuracy of 99.73 percent.The miss rate for scored by Neurotechnology’s algorithm’s Rank1 results, meaning the top-ranked match is a correct match, are the best result the test has yet recorded, according to the announcement. The company emphasizes the importance of this metric for real-time use cases in law enforcement, civil registration, and visitor management systems.The assessment shows higher accuracy for Neurotechnology’s latest algorithm across all categories, including a false non-identification rate (FNIR) of 0.0107 at false positive identification rate (FPIR) of 0.01 for single-eye matching. For both eyes, FNIR at FPIR 0.01 was 0.0033. These results placed Neurotechnology 5th and 6th, respectively, amongst the 29 algorithms on NIST’s leaderboard as of June, 2023.“We are excited to achieve the top accuracy in NIST’s evaluation categories and are thrilled to see our algorithm’s miss rate almost twice as low as the closest competitor in some assessments,” says Evaldas Borcovas, biometric research lead at Neurotechnology. “I believe this submission to IREX 10 is one extra step toward our goal to develop overall the most accurate iris recognition algorithm.”

The U.S. and other developed economies are punishing CloudWalk for its part in supplying software to Beijing for the oppression of its Muslim Uyghur minority. Norwegian firm Zwipe has inked a deal with Middle East Payment Services (MEPS), for the commercial launch of a card based on its biometric Zwipe Pay solution.MEPS, founded in 2009, has a presence in Jordan, Iraq, and Palestine, and offers companies a variety of payments and card-based services. The payment platform is jointly owned by a combination of ten local and regional banks. The rollout will be the first for biometric payment cards to include multiple banks, according to a Zwipe representative.Though the new card will be built on Mastercard’s ecosystem, the Middle Eastern firm acts as an issuer and acquirer for a variety of companies such as Visa, MasterCard, and UnionPay,The company says the latest announcement builds on pilots which have already been conducted between the two firms over the last few months.In addition, digital security firm Inkript is set to launch what it says will be the first commercialized biometric payment card based on Zwipe’s platform.The new card will be available to ‘VIP’ customers of the Kuwait International Bank (KIB), a commercial bank based in Kuwait City.This announcement came during Seamless Middle East 2023, a popular digital commerce event that is hosted annually in DubaiThis isn’t the first time Zwipe and Inkript have collaborated.In May this year, Zwipe announced it would be supplying its biometric Pay card to Taiwanese card maker Beautiful Card Corp. Japanese doctors have taken the government to court to fight the mandatory replacement of health insurance cards, arguing it is expensive to implement.Part of that unease arose when some residents discovered their ID cards linked to unrelated personal information. This has intensified pressure on Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who has suffered a decline in support according to Reuters.In response to the controversy, Kishida has established a My Number information comprehensive inspection headquarters to examine the program and prevent similar errors.Talking at a press conference Wednesday, the head of state said his government will improve program procedures and operations, including eligibility documentation.Parliament has enacted a law June 2 effectively mandating My Number IDs to access health care as of fall 2024, the Japan Times reports. The IDs are already linked to tax and social security records, as well as some bank accounts.“We will work on the complete abolition of the current health insurance cards on the premise that measures to dispel public anxiety will be completed,” Kishida said.Despite the data security concerns, Kishida’s government has shown no intention of altering the schedule for phasing out health insurance cards.

The G7 Data Protection and Privacy Authorities (DPAs) have endorsed a plan based on three pillars resulting from a roundtable discussion with the authorities.The regulators met earlier this month in Japan to discuss key privacy and data protection topics.The G7 is an intergovernmental group of officials discussing world economics. Seven large Western nations make up the group. The DPAs are officials from each nation’s data privacy agencies.Their three pillars include developing and implementing the data free flow with trust (DFFT) concept as well as emerging technologies and enhancing enforcement cooperation.According to the World Economic Forum, DFFT is a guiding principle for international cooperation regarding data flows.DFFT has focused on issues like trade agreements, including e-commerce negotiations at the World Trade Organization and regional and bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs).The DPA promised to be “attentive and supportive” of the efforts to develop the DFFT concept.This pillar includes creating a new institutional arrangement for partnership and emphasizes that trust is vital to the flow of data around the globe.The first pillar also promotes a common understanding of the idea and its key components as related to data protection and to assess “common goals to ensure a high level of data protection and privacy.”The second pillar is related to promoting the development and use of emerging technologies in ways that reinforce trust and respect privacy.This is said to include collaborative work and discussions on de-identification, anonymization, pseudonymization and privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) by “fostering a common understanding of key terms and concepts in use across G7 jurisdictions.”According to the United Kingdom’s information commissioner, PETs “are technologies that embody fundamental data protection principles.”This includes minimizing personal information use, maximizing information security or empowering people.Many PETS have direct biometrics and digital identity uses, for example, zero-knowledge proofs, a cryptographic concept that reduces proofing transactions to a simple confirmation or denial without sharing details or user data.This pillar includes creating a terminology reference document outlining key terms and characteristics of important concepts used by G7 DPAs to facilitate collaborative work and discussions and to address relevant international definitions and uses of the terms.The second pillar is also about fueling adoption and development of PETs by developing a use case demonstrating how one specific PET (synthetic data) “can be used to reduce privacy risks while contributing to the public benefit.” This approach will then be expanded to other use cases.According to the UK’s ICO, synthetic data is artificial data created by data synthesis algorithms.This data copies patterns and the statistical properties of real data, such as personal information, and is generated from real data.This means that analysis of synthetic data can produce very similar results to analysis carried out on the original data while minimizing data collection.The second pillar also concerns the Global Privacy Assembly 2022 Resolution on Principles and Expectations for the Appropriate Use of Personal Information in Facial Recognition Technology, which is meant to set global shared principles for facial recognition use by public and private organizations.The pillars also laid out plans to collaborate on the issue of personal data protection within the context of generative AI “from an ethical, legal, social, and technical perspective.The third pillar is related to enforcement cooperation, increasing dialogue among enforcers among the G7 DPAs and the broader data protection and privacy enforcement communityThis would involve sharing domestic and international best practices for effective enforcement collaboration, including successful cooperation cases, and exploring differences in enforcement from perspectives of deterrence, accountability and protection of individuals.The DPAs will report on the progress and achievements of the plan at the 2024 G7 DPA roundtable, to be held in Italy.

Roughly 850 million people in the world still do not have an official ID, while some of those that have an ID struggle with a lack of control over privacy and data. Decentralized ID has the promise to deliver digital identity that addresses these issues, but also poses risks and faces challenges, a new report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) says.The Reimagining Digital ID report lays out a total of 24 recommendations for government officials, regulators and executives, defining risks such as data exploitation, political and technical risks. One of the risks highlighted in the report is the possibility of personal data that is stored centrally being abused for marketing purposes.“Sensitive data, such as biometrics, carry a high risk of exploitation,” says the report. ”This is especially concerning in the case of marginalized communities such as refugees because it can facilitate discriminatory targeting.”The best policy, the report notes, is to not collect highly sensitive data such as ethnic affiliation at all, as these are likely vectors for marginalization or oppression.The technical and policy analysis offers an overview of decentralized ID standards and proposals such as Verifiable Credentials (VCs), decentralized identifiers (DID), zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), soulbound tokens (SBTs). It also lists possible reasons why decentralized ID has not yet been widely adopted along with case studies.The report was authored by a group of contributors led by Aiden Slavin, lead of WEF’s Crypto Impact and Sustainability Accelerator. The platform also provides fraud prevention capabilities, with auditing and certification to the highest degree of identity protection, according to the post.Proof says it is now in the process of earning IAL2 certification from the Kantara Initiative.“Every time you sign on the dotted line, we should be constantly evaluating: ‘is this really you?’,” Notarize and Proof Founder Pat Kinsel writes. “And your identity should be bound to the data with the highest level of cryptography so your signature can’t be forged or tampered with.”Proof binds each user’s identity to their digital signature with identity proofing based on an upload of an ID document and a selfie biometric check, as depicted on the company’s website. Speakers during the ID4Africa Livecast on June 21, which was dedicated to summarising key points from some workshops during the movement’s 2023 Augmented general meeting in Nairobi, have made a strong case for African countries to have an integrated and harmonized digital Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system that will accelerate birth registration on the continent.The virtual event segment made a synopsis of key highlights from discussions at an in-person exchange during one of the workshops during the AGM in Nairobi which focused on exploring ways of developing the African e-CRVS Shared Asset (ACSA).Participants included officials from development partners UNICEF and UNECA, four African governments who shared their country experiences and perspectives, and a representative from OpenCRVS, a standards-based open-source solution for civil registration.The contributions generally recognized the slow nature of birth registration efforts on the continent and the possibility of African countries having a uniform and standardized approach to birth registration digitization through the creation of an integrated CRVS system through which countries will benefit from each other’s experience.Thoughts on CRVS shared asset design, implementationThe exchanges were aimed at providing more clarity in terms of business processes and implementation modalities of the shared asset.One of the UNICEF officials, Fui Meng Liew, said one issue which came out strong during the in-person discussions on the subject was the challenges in birth registration digitization in Africa, especially from the data fragmentation perspective where some governments keep many databases and such data is not easily shared with each other when it comes to birth registration.To change this, she said she believes there is need for certain archaic processes and policies to be updated, including the need for legislation on data privacy and protection.“Our aim was to see how the notion of an African e-CRVS shared asset can be teased out. We shared some of our ideas and experiences about the need to have core design principles, whether it is for design for scale to make sure that systems are interoperable, adopting open standards for data sharing, protecting privacy and securing the users, and making sure that there is inclusion in the e-CRVS system. Without users coming along, the asset would not be successful if we have to start this journey,” said Liew.Liew’s colleague at UNICEF, Bhaskar Mishra, said the idea of developing a digital CRVS shared asset has been well-received by African counties.“The concept was well received. You know that the idea of developing a shared asset is not new. It is part of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 which talks about where Africa wants to be by that year. It is in line with some of the aspirations and recommendations of the conference of ministers of Africa in charge of civil registration,” said Mishra.He added that the African Union, UNECA, and UN Legal Identity have each called for a uniform and standard approach to digitization of CRVS systems and have also emphasised the need for South-South cooperation, which favours learning from one another.Mishra also corroborated Liew on the need to pay attention to core design principles in making the shared asset project work. Core design principles, technological and non-technological solutions and a digital CRVS solution or ‘stack’ are the crux of the shared asset, he said, adding that it is also important to “follow a consortium approach, to take advantage of the features of open source, proprietary and home-grown solutions and offer it to countries for free.”Another important issue, according to Mishra, is to establish an advisory body that will provide technical and oversight support to the shared asset implementation process.Edward Duffus of OpenCRVS explained the import of a digital CRVS system as a digital public infrastructure. “A digital civil registration system is a critical part of digital public infrastructure. It is an enabler of the foundational identity ecosystem,” he noted.He said the huge interest notwithstanding, there are a lot of issues to figure out. “The essence of creating a common asset also requires a degree of harmonization. We know that a lot of countries have their own specific laws, processes, and systems. Thus, this will need a significant amount of will power and vision across Africa to get this moving.”He mentioned reusable standards, best practices, technology components and the need to deal with data fragmentation by ensuring the protection of personal data in a highly secure way, and making a shared asset system implementation and maintenance easy.Chiming in to the discussion, a former UNICEF director of child protection, Cornelius Williams, said to successfully build such an asset, sufficient financial resources and technical skills are needed and countries must step up and show leadership and agility by parting ways with some of their bureaucratic policies which have given rise to structural failures.A UNECA official, William Muhwava, reiterated the position of African Ministers in charge of civil registration during a meeting in Mauritania where they recommended the putting in place of a common ICT system, with the highest standard of data protection and confidentiality, that will promote interoperability among civil registration, health, and identity management systems to meet the needs of all African countries.He remarked that a study carried out by UNECA revealed that national ID systems in some countries are stronger than civil registration systems which is something to worry about given that ID systems cannot work properly without strong foundations.The official also raised the question of who will coordinate the shared asset implementation drive. “If we are going into a common asset, then that’s one thing we have to look at. Who is going to coordinate? Who is going to provide the leadership?” he questioned rhetorically.In any case, he stated that African counties looking forward to such a system have to think about how to build the right standards and set a platform of strong leadership and collaboration.African countries welcome initiative-Representatives from ID and civil registration authorities of the four African countries, namely Rosemary Kisembo from Uganda; Togbe Agbagla from Togo; Tulimeke Munyika from Namibia and Djenabou Camara from Guinea, each took the floor to share their country experiences, expectations and perspectives on the proposed digital CRVS shared asset for Africa.All four were unanimous that the digital CRVS shared asset is a welcome idea that will help streamline civil registration on the continent, although they made divergent proposals on how they think the ACSA system can get running.“Yes, we need this shared digital CRVS system. There are 54 countries in Africa. There are things that we share without doubt. We also need to identity what our common goal is with such a system,” said Kisembo as she shared her take on some of the things that can easily be agreed upon by African governments when it comes to designing such an integrated system.Agbagla from Togo talked about the need to develop a common toolkit that would act as a guide, while Munyika from Namibia emphasized the need for countries to create a stage where nations which are far ahead in their CRVS pursuits can share their experiences with the others and carry them along.

Moroccans will soon be able to use their digital identity for accessing health services after government representatives signed an agreement that allows hospitals and other medical institutions to verify the identity of patients through the scheme.The deal was signed last Friday between the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the National Commission for the Control of Personal Data Protection (CNDP) and the General Directorate for National Security, Middle East Online reports.Moroccan citizens can choose to include some of their health data in the electronic chip of the national identity card, including patient number, social protection number and other health data.In April, the digital ID system was also introduced into the financial court system of Morocco.The country’s eID system was launched in 2019 by the Digital Development Agency (ADD) and the Directorate of National Security (DGSN) on a platform provided by Idemia. The MOSIP-based digital ID system was introduced to the wider public last year during ID4Africa.
