NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks on Wall Street mostly slipped Wednesday following the latest signals that the U.S. economy is slowing under the weight of much higher interest rates.The S&P 500 dipped 10.22 points, or 0.2%, to 4,090.38, a day after it broke a four-day winning streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 80.34, or 0.2%, to 33,482.72, and the Nasdaq composite dropped 129.47, or 1.1%, to 11,996.86.Yields also fell in the bond market following weaker-than-expected reports on the health of U.S. services industries and the job market. A number of biometric ID vendors are releasing financial reports, and the only trend for the category might be that there is no trend. That becomes clearer as more annual reports are filed.Executives are reacting to and being buffeted by rapidly changing economic and political developments. But companies also are in different business stages and product development cycles.Here, in no particular order, are insights gleaned from the annual reports of Trust Stamp, Zwipe, authID and BIO-key.It may be remembered that fiscal 2022 was a mixed bag for Trust Stamp. Executives earlier this year reported a sizable jump in net revenue for the fiscal ended December 31, but also a wider loss, compared to 2021.The net loss before taxes was $12 million, or $2.55 per share, on net revenue of $5.3 million compared to a loss of $9 million, or $2.40, on revenue of $3.6 million. Cash and equivalents dropped as well. It was $1.2 million in 2022 compared to $3.4 million a year earlier.In a statement, CEO Garth Genner in his annual report called last year “transformative.”Twenty-five financial institutions with assets in excess of $50 billion became clients last year as the company’s products and services became modular.Indeed, Trust Stamp executives attributed the revenue increase to the continuing move away from being a custom software ID shop to off-the-shelf. The firm’s orchestration layer as an API, for instance, debuted as a service in February 2022. It is “typically” billed per use or per user, according to executives.All of this is a good recipe for lowering costs for the company over time. As it is, however, cost of services provided and the cost of sales both rose compared to 2021 (significantly so for sales).As it happens, the CEO of Zwipe, Robert Puskaric, describes fiscal 2022 (ended December 31) as “transformative” in his annual report, too.Puskaric says Zwipe now has an “execution-first” posture, having spent time primarily setting up products in R&D. It is “ready to achieve commercial traction and scale in 2023.”He is primarily referring to Zwipe’s Pay fingerprint-biometric card. During fiscal 2022, Pay was finalized as a product, and it also was certified by Visa and Mastercard. Puskaric claims Pay is the first payment card sold on the open market to win those coveted certifications.He says that last year set up its access management product, Access, as a standalone business line. Access is one of two ID access management products being tested in a pilot at Frankfurt Airport, according to the company.Zwipe reported a loss of 104.7 million Norwegian kroner (US$10.1 million), or NOK2.80 ($0.27) per share, on revenue of NOK3.9 million ($380,000). This compares to a loss of NOK83.4 million ($8 million), NOK2.45 ($0.24), on revenue of NOK2.5 million ($240,000).The company’s gross margin tumbled to 45 percent last year from 66 percent in 2021.ID authenticator authID has not yet published its annual report for the period ended December 31. It has, instead, released the raw data.Executives have reported a loss of $24.2 million, or $0.97, per share, on revenue of $527,000. This compares with a loss of $17.6 million, or $0.78, on revenue of $64.7 million in fiscal 2021. AuthID doubled its software license revenue to $200,000.The company views 2023 as the year of its “next stage of market growth.”CEO Rhon Daguro said in a statement that 2022 will be remembered internally as the year that is had “a perfect score in testing for ISO level2 biometric presentation attack detection.” Its software also was certified by the FIDO Alliance.Daguro joined authID from Socure last year. A new report on surveillance technology in India has uncovered a high level of public support for certain forms of government surveillance, including facial recognition, but also a lack of awareness of digital privacy issues.The report, titled Status of Policing in India Report (SPIR) 2023 — Surveillance and the Question of Privacy, is claimed to be the first study in India that explores public opinions on digital surveillance based on a survey of almost 10,000 people and interviews with experts. Aside from facial recognition, the study analyzes other technologies used in policing such as biometric identification systems, CCTV cameras, and drones alongside predictive policing tools and spyware such as Pegasus.The study found that half of the survey respondents supported the use of facial recognition technology by the government (50 percent) and the police (46 percent). People were also four times more likely to support the use of this technology by government agencies compared to private entities. However, one in five respondents said that they were not aware of the technology.Close to half (48 percent) of respondents also agree that police should be allowed to collect biometric details such as fingerprints, retina scans, and facial recognition data while a large segment of the population (55 percent) also supports the use of drones by state agencies.When it comes to CCTV cameras, the majority (52 percent) believe it is justified for the government to use them to curb political movements and protests. However, the same number of respondents say they fear mass surveillance.Several Indian states and agencies have been using facial recognition since 2019, including during the COVID-19 lockdown and anti-government protests such as the 2021 farmer movement. Facial recognition systems have also been hooked up to India’s rising number of CCTV cameras and used to stop and screen people on suspicion.Facial recognition has also been controversially deployed in an operator-initiated application used by police in Chennai for random checks.At the same time, India has been introducing new projects collecting biometrics including the controversial Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act introduced in 2022 which allows authorities to collect, analyze and store biometric and personal data on any person who has been arrested. The country’s flagship identification project known as Aadhaar, which collects biometric and other personal details, has also raised concerns over misuse of data and private information leaks.CCTVs are the most commonly used surveillance tool by the police in India although the frequency of its usage is unknown due to a lack of data. The report claims that there was no statistically significant relationship between the number of CCTVs operated by the police and crime rates from 2016 to 2020.The report found that respondents of lower socioeconomic status as well as those who had first-hand experience with surveillance technologies were less likely to support their use.“Support for any form of surveillance decreases with a decline in the respondent’s socioeconomic status, consistent with past findings that the poor, Adivasis, Dalits, and Muslims are least trustful of the police,” the report says.Experts cited in the report have warned that surveillance technologies reinforce biases towards minorities and members of different castes. Other issues include misuse of power and lacking privacy laws: the country’s proposed Digital Personal Data Protection Bill is yet to be adopted.Official data on police surveillance in India is limited adding to a lack of transparency and accountability, according to the report. At the same time, interviews with members of the police highlighted the lack of technical knowledge to be able to carry out digital surveillance.“Biometric surveillance technologies are often deployed with a questionable legal basis and breach data protection laws or infringe upon fundamental human rights such as privacy,” states the report.

A Swedish government inquiry into the digitalization of payments issued a report, recommending that the state launches its own digital identity as soon as possible.The report argues that digitalization has raised questions about privacy, secure identification and processing of personal data, as well as public confidence in payments and the financial system. These issues have been further highlighted by the war in Ukraine. A national electronic ID would provide the highest level of assurance and security without the need for companies to conduct comprehensive identification, according to the report.“The Inquiry is of the opinion that primary identification of citizens and residents is a central government responsibility,” says the report. “In view of this, the Inquiry assesses that it is extremely urgent that a national e-id be introduced with the highest level of security as soon as possible.”The state should also play a greater role in securing and boosting access to digital payments, the report concludes.The inquiry was launched by the Swedish government in December 2020 with a task to review the state’s role in the payment market. The conclusions of the inquiry were delivered last Friday by Chief Investigator Anna Kinberg Batra.Batra has previously argued that a few banks and companies control “socially important information.” Sweden is one of only four EU states, alongside Cyprus, Greece, and Romania, which lacks a state-issued digital ID. Currently, Sweden widely uses BankID, Freja and Svenska Pass for verifying digital identity.In December 2022, the country formed an inquiry into developing a government-issued digital ID with results set to be published in May 2024.

Yoti has released a new white paper detailing improvements in its age and skin tone recognition capabilities for its facial age estimation technology. The updates offer global regulators more confidence that children would not be able to access age-restricted goods, services, and content without discriminating by gender or skin tone, the UK-based digital identity verification company said in an announcement.According to its white paper released in March 2023, Yoti’s evaluations of its own technology show a true positive rate (TPR) of 99.93 percent for estimating the age of 13- to 17-year-olds as being under 25, and a TPR of 98.35 percent for estimating 6- to 11-year-olds as under 13. The mean absolute error for people from 13 to 17 years of age is now 1.4 years, and Yoti says gender and skin tone bias have been effectively minimized.The mean absolute error rate for people with the two darkest skin tones on the Fitzpatrick scale improved from 1.91 for females and 1.64 for males in the 13-17 age range to 1.6 and 1.5 in the latest report.The latest update of Yoti’s accuracy numbers makes some measurement adjustments from a year ago, when mean absolute error was presented to two decimal places and age was estimated against a 23-year-old threshold.Yoti’s age-checking service is used by companies such as Instagram, Facebook Dating, OnlyFans and Yubo. Last month, Meta expanded its use of facial age estimation on Instagram to more countries, including Mexico, Australia, Canada and Japan.The company has also developed anti-spoofing technology named Yoti MyFace to prevent fake images from being used for facial age estimation. MyFace analyses the depth of an image to make sure the person is real and not a photograph, video or bot. The proprietary product received NIST Level 2 approval with 100 percent attack detection in March this year.“We’re very proud to have reached 99.9 percent accuracy for 13-17 year-olds correctly being estimated as under 25, and achieved NIST Level 2 for our MyFace Liveness technology,” Robin Tombs, CEO at Yoti said in a press release. “From now on, businesses can accept estimated age, such as under 13 or over 18, as proof of age, as well as accept age verified to an ID document. The Digital Identity Initiative of the World Economic Forum (WEF) has been discussing the possibilities of agreeing on an international policy and standards framework that will serve as the springboard to enhance the adoption of digital ID systems that put privacy at the top of all major priorities.The panel believes blockchain technology can help in building such privacy-preserving digital ID infrastructure, and in so doing, helping organizations and governments realize financial, health and social impact projects.Discussions at the Forum’s Annual Meeting workshop which had as theme “Improving Livelihoods with Digital ID,” organized by its Crypto Impact and Sustainability Accelerator (CISA), examined ways by which digital ID benefits can be leveraged through a standardized approach, according to an article by Brett McDowell, chair and President of decentralized and open-source public ledger Hedera.Hedera participated in the discussions on digital ID during the WEF’s recent meeting in Davos.According to McDowell, having a blockchain-powered digital ID system that enhances data privacy and minimize incidences of data theft or exploitation is the way to go.This, he says, is even made much easier with the Web3 concept, which seeks to replace the intermediary in managing digital ID “with public blockchain infrastructure where the user stores their digital identity metadata while keeping their personal information offline in their digital wallet with verified credentials signed by their various credential issuers.”As writes McDowell, this means that each time a user “presents a credential from their wallet to an application, it can verify the credential by checking the cryptographic signature against the original credential issuer’s public key, which has previously been published in a publicly available registry,” while allowing them control over how, when and to who they share such information.Digital ID systems built on such a model will not only enhance public trust, but will also drive economic incentives with several positive outcomes.To get there however is not such a smooth ride. To McDowell, it means significant work has to be done and one of such things is to draw important lessons from digital ID pilots and then apply them at scale with the goal of delivering “a foundational building block for solutions to global challenges ranging from digital workforce transformation, to carbon asset MRV, to fundamental social challenges of exclusion and data exploitation.”

MONTREAL — Federal prosecutors in the United States say an Indian man living in Canada was paid thousands of dollars to smuggle other Indian nationals into the U.S. through the Akwesasne Mohawk reserve.Simranjit (Shally) Singh, 40, appeared in an Albany, N.Y., court Friday to face six counts of alien smuggling for profit and three counts of conspiracy to commit alien smuggling for profit, a day after he was extradited from Canada.The case is not connected to the deaths last week of eight people — including four Indian nationals — who were attempting to illegally cross into the United States from Canada through Akwesasne, about 130 kilometres southwest of Montreal. But it sheds light on alleged human smuggling through the Mohawk territory straddling the Canada-U.S. border, where police say they have intercepted 80 people — mostly of Indian and Romanian descent — trying to enter the United States illegally since January.A statement from the U.S. attorney's office for the Northern District of New York says the charges stem from Singh's "involvement and facilitation of the smuggling of Indian nationals from Canada into the United States, via Cornwall Island and the Akwesasne Mohawk Indian reservation in the St. Lawrence River region, from at least March 2020 through March 2021."U.S. prosecutors filed an indictment against him in June 2022 alleging that during three separate trips, Singh smuggled six people across the border.Singh, who lived in Brampton, Ont., is accused of being a "broker" who was paid by migrants to organize their travel across the border, according to court documents filed in Ontario as part of the extradition process.In an Aug. 10 Ontario Superior Court ruling denying Singh bail, Justice James Stribopoulos said the accused is alleged to have transported migrants to Cornwall, Ont., which is next to Akwesasne. "During their drive to Cornwall, he claimed, Mr. Singh told him he had no reason to worry and boasted that he had smuggled 'over 1,000' people into the United States.""The materials filed suggest Mr. Singh has led a scheme to smuggle unlawful migrants into the United States for over two years. (AP) — A large tornado ripped through southeastern Missouri before dawn on Wednesday, killing at least five people and causing widespread destruction as the third in a series of deadly massive storms over the past two weeks struck the nation's heartland.Forecasters kept a wary eye out for more possible tornadoes, hail and extreme weather as this year's early storm season continued. It has spawned dozens of tornadoes, mainly in the South and Midwest, that have killed at least 63 people. Just last weekend, confirmed or suspected tornadoes in at least eight states laid waste to neighborhoods across a broad swath of the country.Midwest tornadoes have typically occurred later in the spring, but this year’s early spate of severe weather continues a trend seen over the past few years, said Bill Bunting, chief of forecast operations at the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.The Missouri tornado touched down around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday and moved through a rural area of Bollinger County, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of St. Louis, said Sgt. (AP) — Kansas is banning transgender athletes from girls’ and women’s sports from kindergarten through college, the first of several possible new laws restricting the rights of transgender people pushed through by Republican legislators over the wishes of the Democratic governor.The Legislature on Wednesday overrode Gov. Laura Kelly’s third veto in three years of a bill to ban transgender athletes, and came a day after state lawmakers passed a broad bathroom bill. Nineteen other states have imposed restrictions on transgender athletes, most recently Wyoming.The Kansas law takes effect July 1 and is among several hundred proposals that Republican lawmakers across the U.S. have pursued this year to push back on LGBTQ rights. Kansas lawmakers who back the ban are also pursuing proposals to end gender-affirming care for minors and restrict restroom use.The measure approved by Kansas lawmakers Tuesday would prevent transgender people from using public restrooms, locker rooms and other facilities associated with their gender identities, and bars them from changing their name or gender on their driver’s licenses. BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Starting next year, anyone in Idaho who provides gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth could end up a convicted felon, after the state’s Republican governor signed legislation banning the treatment late Tuesday.At least one organization has already promised to sue over the new law. The American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho announced Wednesday it was looking for potential plaintiffs for the lawsuit and asked anyone impacted by the legislation to reach out.Idaho is one of at least 13 states to enact a law restricting or banning gender-affirming care for minors, and nearly two dozen more are considering similar bills. Under Idaho's new law, physicians will face up to 10 years in prison if they provide hormones, puberty blockers or other gender-affirming care to people under age 18.Opponents of the legislation say it will likely increase suicide rates among teens, but proponents say the bill is necessary to “protect children” from medical or surgical treatments for gender dysphoria.Still, supporters acknowledge there's no indication that gender-affirming surgeries are being performed on transgender youth in Idaho.“In signing this bill, I recognize our society plays a role in protecting minors from surgeries or treatments that can irreversibly damage their healthy bodies,” Gov.
