experts urge vigilance: Bring back Green Pass now, maybe more rules
soon-As cabinet decides against fresh restrictions, research group says
government should start once again barring the unvaccinated from some
venues, but no need for panic yet-By Nathan Jeffay-jun 28,21-Today, 6:37
am
The government should bring back the Green Pass and consider
reintroducing some other recently scrapped virus restrictions to fight
the new rise in COVID cases, according to an influential expert
panel.“Israel should seriously consider reintroducing the Green Pass and
perhaps also the Purple Badge,” said Prof. Nadav Katz, coronavirus
statistician in a Hebrew University research panel that advises the
government. The Green Pass was a certificate issued to vaccinated and
recovered individuals giving them access to certain venues that others
could not enter. The Purple Badge was a list of requirements businesses
needed to meet in order to be allowed to operate. Both were scrapped at
the start of June as virus infections petered out.The contagion is now
once again on the rise amid the spread of the Delta variant. Still, the
government decided on Sunday against new restrictions on the
public.Katz’s modeling suggests that the highly-transmissible Delta
variant that originated in India currently accounts for close to half of
Israeli COVID cases and will be dominant in the country by the end of
the week. But he urged people “not to panic,” especially as research
suggests that vaccines are highly effective against the Delta
variant. With the number of new daily cases at around 100, Israelis are
once again wearing masks inside, and on Monday there will be a major
tightening of rules governing entry to Israel. But aside from these two
changes, leaders are desperately trying to keep life in Israel
restriction-free. They are aiming at strengthening immunity without
expanding rules, by urging 12- to 15-year-olds, newly eligible for
vaccines, to take shots.Prime Minister Naftali Bennett appealed to young
teens on Sunday, saying they should vaccinate in order to avert
restrictions, and declared: “We do not want to impose any limits — not
on parties, or trips or on anything.”But Katz’s research group, composed
of experts in health and statistics, released a report on Sunday
stating that “in many cities significant infection is evident,” and
arguing in favor of restrictions. On Saturday, 97 cases were identified
in 37 different locales, and another 18 cases were identified among
travelers who had arrived from abroad. Katz said that by the end of this
week, it will be clear whether the new cases are causing an uptick in
morbidity, and if they are, authorities should restrict
gatherings.“We’ll know in the next few days whether the rise in numbers
is more a reflection of increased testing, or whether we’re seeing an
actual outbreak,” he told The Times of Israel, saying this will be
evident from how many cases filter to hospitals.“There is always a week
or 10 days before an increase in cases prompts an increase in
hospitalized patients, so what we want to see is whether the gradient of
the numbers becoming hospitalized gets steeper by the end of this
week,” said Katz. There are currently 1,186 COVID-positive Israelis, five
times the number in mid-June. But the number of hospitalized patients
has stayed low, and is currently 44, with, 23 in serious condition.Katz
said: “The situation is much better than in the past, as a large part of
the susceptible population has been vaccinated. We’re not in the same
situation as we’re seeing in other countries where hospitals could be at
risk of being overwhelmed.”The fact that significant numbers of those
testing COVID-positive are vaccinated should not unsettle people or lead
them to conclude that the Delta variant defies vaccines, Katz
argued. While one is highly unlikely to catch COVID-19 if inoculated, it
still happens, and with so many Israelis vaccinated, it’s inevitable
that a large proportion of those infected will be vaccinated, he
said.Israel is using the Pfizer vaccine which has been found to be over
95% effective. And those who were infected after vaccination largely had
none or mild symptoms.“If theoretically 100% of Israelis were
vaccinated then 100% of cases would be among the vaccinated, but this
doesn’t highlight a problem with the vaccine,” said Katz.

Calling out to loved ones, family
members allowed to visit Florida disaster site-Jewish family members

remains are found-By TERRY SPENCER and Russ Bynum-jun 28,21-Today, 2:17

SURFSIDE, Florida (AP) — Families of the missing visited the
scene of the Florida condo building collapse Sunday as rescuers kept
digging through the mound of rubble and clinging to hope that someone
could yet be alive somewhere under the broken concrete and twisted
metal. The death toll rose by just four people, to a total of nine
confirmed dead. But after almost four full days of search-and-rescue
efforts, more than 150 additional people were still missing in Surfside.
No one has been pulled alive from the pile since Thursday, hours after
the collapse. Some families had hoped their visit would allow them to
shout messages to loved ones possibly buried deep inside the pile.Buses
brought several groups of relatives to a place where they could view the
pile and the rescuers at work. As relatives returned to a nearby hotel,
several paused to embrace as they got off the bus. Others walked slowly
with arms around each other back to the hotel entrance.“We are just
waiting for answers. That’s what we want,” said Dianne Ohayon, whose
parents, Myriam and Arnie Notkin, were in the building. “It’s hard to go
through these long days and we haven’t gotten any answers yet.”“You
can’t imagine. Many of them are desperate” as days drag on with no more
survivors found, said Israeli Diaspora Affairs Minister Nachman Shai,
who visited briefly with family members of those missing.Shai led a
humanitarian delegation to Surfside that included several Israeli
experts in search-and-rescue operations. He said the experts have told
him of cases where survivors were found after 100 hours or more.“So
don’t lose hope, that’s what I would say. But you have everyone
understanding the longer it takes, the prospects of finding someone
alive goes down,” he said.“If you watch the scene, you know it’s almost
impossible to find someone alive,” Shai added. “But you never know.
Sometimes miracles happen, you know? We Jews believe in
miracles.”Rescuers sought to reassure families that they were doing as
much as possible to find missing loved ones, but the crews said they
needed to work carefully for the best chance of uncovering
survivors. Some relatives have been frustrated with the pace of rescue
efforts.Families of the victims return from visiting the site of the

out of there,” one mother told rescuers during a weekend meeting with
family members. A video of the meeting was posted by Instagram user
Abigail Pereira.“It’s not enough,” continued the mother, who was among
relatives who pushed authorities to bring in experts from other
countries to help. “Imagine if your children were in there.”Scores of
rescue workers remained on the massive heap of rubble Sunday, searching
for survivors but so far finding only bodies and human remains. In a
meeting with families Saturday evening, people moaned and wept as
Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah explained why he could
not answer their repeated questions about how many victims they had
found.“It’s not necessarily that we’re not finding victims, OK? We’re
finding human remains,” Jadallah said, according to the video posted on
Instagram. He noted the pancake collapse of the 12-story building, which
had crumbled into a rubble pile that could be measured in feet. Those
conditions have frustrated crews looking for survivors, he
said.Humanitarian aid & support from @IDF @IsraelMFA to

Department, said they are holding out hope of finding someone alive, but
they must be slow and methodical.“The debris field is scattered
throughout, and it’s compact, extremely compact,” he said.Debris must be
stabilized and shored up as they go.“If there is a void space, we want
to make sure we’re given every possibility of a survivor. That’s why we
can’t just go in and move things erratically, because that’s going to
have the worst outcome possible,” he said. Two men console each other on

unaccounted for two days after the building partially collapsed on
Thursday. (AP Photo/Marta Lavandier)-In meetings with authorities,
family members repeatedly pushed rescuers to do more. One asked why they
could not surgically remove the largest pieces of cement with cranes,
to try to uncover bigger voids where survivors might be found.“There’s
not giant pieces that we can easily surgically remove,” replied Maggie
Castro, of the fire rescue agency.“They’re not big pieces. Pieces are
crumbled, and they’re being held together by the rebar that’s part of
the construction. So if we try to lift that piece, even as carefully,
those pieces that are crumbling can fall off the sides and disturb the
pile,” Castro said. She said they try to cut rebar in strategic places
and remove large pieces, but that they have to remove them in a way that
nothing will fall onto the pile.“We are doing layer by layer,” Castro
said. “It doesn’t stop. It’s all day. All night.”Rescuers were also
using a microwave radar device developed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab
and the Department of Homeland Security that “sees” through up to 8
inches of solid concrete, according to Adrian Garulay, CEO of Spec Ops
Group, which sells them. The suitcase-sized device can detect human
respiration and heartbeats and was being deployed Sunday by a
seven-member search-and-rescue team from Mexico’s Jewish
community.Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said six to eight teams
are actively searching the pile at any given time, with hundreds of team
members on standby ready to rotate in. She said teams have worked
around the clock since Thursday, and there was no lack of
personnel.Search and Rescue teams look for possible survivors in the

are also working with engineers and sonar to make sure the rescuers are
safe.Crews spent Saturday night digging a trench that stretches 125
feet long, 20 feet across and 40 feet deep, which, she said, allowed
them to find more bodies and human remains.Earl Tilton, who runs a
search-and-rescue consulting firm in North Carolina, said rushing into
the rubble without careful planning and execution would injure or kill
rescuers and the people they are trying to save, said Tilton, who runs
Lodestar Professional Services in Hendersonville, North Carolina.“I
understand the families’ concerns on this. If it was my family member, I
would want everyone in there pulling rubble away as fast as humanly
possible,” Tilton said. “But moving the wrong piece of debris at the
wrong time could cause it to fall on them and crush them.”During past
urban rescues, rescuers have found survivors as long as a week past the
initial catastrophe, Tilton said.Search and Rescue teams look for

that had been recovered earlier, bringing the number of people
unaccounted for to 152, the Miami-Dade mayor said Sunday.Authorities are
gathering DNA samples from family members to aid in identification.
Late Saturday, four of the victims were identified as Stacie Dawn Fang,
54; Antonio Lozano, 83; Gladys Lozano, 79; and Manuel LaFont, 54.
Qatar-funded
fuel enters Gaza via Israel for 1st time since May fighting-In apparent
attempt to strengthen fragile ceasefire, Jerusalem allows gasoline
through Kerem Shalom; said to convey to Hamas that all crossings will
open if calm is maintained-By Aaron Boxerman and TOI staff-jun
28,21-Today, 11:07 am
Israel allowed 17 trucks carrying
Qatar-funded gasoline to enter the Gaza Strip on Monday to fuel the
enclave’s only power station, for the first time since May’s
fighting. The Kan public broadcaster reported on Monday that Palestinian
sources told the Lebanese Al-Akbar newspaper that Egypt sent a message
to the Gaza Strip’s Hamas rulers that if all remains quiet in the area
Israel will fully open the border crossings into the enclave. However,
the sources said that Hamas responded by telling Cairo that it intends
to keep up pressure on Israel, without clarifying what that entails. The
border crossings were shut after a soldier was lightly wounded in a
mortar attack while assisting in the transfer of humanitarian aid
shipments into the Gaza Strip through the Erez Crossing during the
11-day conflict in May. Last week Israeli relaxed some of the
restrictions to allow some goods into Gaza.Delivery of the fuel supplies
came the day after Israel’s military liaison to the Palestinians, known
by its acronym COGAT, said the continued entrance of Qatar-funded fuel
will be “conditional on the preservation of security stability.”Since
2018, Qatar has pumped money into Gaza to fund fuel subsidies, salaries
for Hamas government employees, and stipends for poor families. At the
beginning of 2021, Qatar announced that it hoped to provide $360 million
in cash aid to Gazan families. But the 11-day military conflict last
month between Israel and terror groups in the Strip changed matters, and
Israel has not agreed to allow Qatari subsidies into the enclave since
then. The fuel is the first Qatari subsidy to enter Gaza since the May
violence. The fighting cost the lives of 256 Palestinians and 14 in
Israel. Israel says most of those killed in Gaza were combatants.Israel
has conditioned a full return to the previous status quo — including
allowing Qatari cash into the Strip — on progress on a prisoner exchange
deal between Jerusalem and Hamas.Hamas, the terror group that rules the
Strip, is holding two Israeli citizens and the bodies of two Israeli
soldiers. Its leadership hopes to secure the freedom of hundreds of
Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails in an exchange. The terror group,
for its part, has demanded the lifting of restrictions without any
connection to the potential for a prisoner exchange. The result is a
fragile ceasefire between the two sides, international observers have
warned. The pro-Hamas Lebanese TV network Al-Mayadeen reported Sunday
that Israel and Hamas had reached an initial deal to bring in Qatari
money — despite the lack of apparent progress on the prisoner exchange
issue. According to unnamed sources who spoke to the channel, the
agreement would allow Qatari cash for employees into Gaza by the end of
the week.An Israeli security official denied the report.“The only
agreement regards the entrance of fuel tomorrow, as mediated by the
United Nations,” the security official said on condition of
anonymity.Hamas, a terror organization that avowedly seeks to destroy
Israel, has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007, when it wrested control of
the enclave from its rival Fatah after a bloody series of clashes. Since
Hamas’s takeover, Israel and Egypt have imposed a strict blockade on
Gaza, which has had a devastating impact on the Strip’s economy.Israel
says that blockade is necessary to prevent Hamas from massively arming
itself with deadly weaponry.Demands for Qatar to renew its aid were
reportedly at the root of several rounds of escalation between Israel
and Hamas before the recent operation. Hamas was said to hope that
Jerusalem would pressure Doha into increasing the sum it sends to the
coastal enclave in order to rid itself of the terror group’s fire at its
south.

US airstrikes target Iran-backed militia in Iraq, Syria
over drone attacks-Biden authorizes strikes on 3 targets used to launch
drone attacks on US soldiers, bases in the Middle East; monitor says at
least 5 Iraqi fighters killed; Syria says child killed-By AFP and TOI
staff-jun 28,21-Today, 3:32 am
WASHINGTON — The Pentagon
announced Sunday it had conducted targeted airstrikes against
“facilities used by Iran-backed militia groups” on the Iraq-Syria
border, which it said were authorized by US President Joe Biden
following ongoing attacks on US interests.“At President Biden’s
direction, US military forces earlier this evening conducted defensive
precision airstrikes against facilities used by Iran-backed militia
groups in the Iraq-Syria border region,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby
said in a statement.Kirby added that the targets — two in Syria, one in
Iraq — were selected because “these facilities are utilized by
Iran-backed militias that are engaged in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)
attacks against US personnel and facilities in Iraq.”US interests in
Iraq have come under repeated attack in recent months, with the United
States consistently blaming Iran-linked Iraqi factions for rocket and
other attacks against Iraqi installations housing its personnel.“Given
the ongoing series of attacks by Iran-backed groups targeting US
interests in Iraq, the president directed further military action to
disrupt and deter such attacks,” Kirby said.“Specifically, the US
strikes targeted operational and weapons storage facilities at two
locations in Syria and one location in Iraq, both of which lie close to
the border between those countries,” he added. While the United States
did not provide information on casualties, the Britain-based Syrian
Observatory for Human Rights — a pro-Syrian opposition organization of
uncertain funding based in the UK which has had its credibility
questioned in the past — said that “at least five Iran-backed Iraqi
militia fighters were killed and several others were wounded in an
attack by US warplanes” on the Syrian side of the frontier. The war
monitor, which relies on a network of sources inside Syria to collect
information, said that military positions were among the targets
hit.Syria’s state-run SANA news agency said one child had been killed
and that at least three other people were wounded.Since the start of the
year there have been more than 40 attacks against US interests in Iraq,
where 2,500 American troops are deployed as part of an international
coalition to fight the jihadist Islamic State group. The vast majority
have been strikes against logistics convoys, while 14 were rocket
attacks, some of them claimed by pro-Iran factions that aim to pressure
Washington into withdrawing all their troops. The strikes come one day
after Iraqi Kurdish officials said three explosives-laden drones hit
near the northern Iraqi city of Erbil, where the United States has a
consulate.It also occurred as the Hashed al-Shaabi, a pro-Iran
paramilitary alliance opposed to the US presence in Iraq, held a
military parade near Baghdad attended by senior officials. In April, a
drone packed with explosives hit the coalition’s Iraq headquarters in
the military part of the airport in Arbil, the Iraqi Kurdish regional
capital. The tactic poses a headache for the coalition, as drones can
evade air defenses.“As demonstrated by this evening’s strikes, President
Biden has been clear that he will act to protect US personnel,” Kirby
said.
Associated Press-Russian team in Lebanon to study rebuilding destroyed silos-Mon, June 28, 2021, 8:10 AM
BEIRUT
(AP) — A Russian business delegation met Lebanese officials on Monday
to discuss plans to rebuild the grain silos destroyed last year in a
massive explosion at Beirut’s port, a Lebanese Cabinet minister said. The
visit by the Russian team — including officials from Russia’s Hydro
Engineering and Construction company — comes as Lebanon is going though
the worst economic and financial crisis in its modern history.Nearly
3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate — a highly explosive material used in
fertilizers — had been improperly stored in the port for years. The
nitrate ignited on Aug. 4, causing a catastrophic blast that killed 211
people and injured more than 6,000, devastating nearby neighborhoods.A
government-commissioned study in the wake of the explosion said the
50-year-old silos could collapse at any moment and should be demolished.
Several countries are said to be interested in rebuilding the port and
the surrounding areas, including Turkey, Germany and China.Lebanon's
Caretaker Public Works and Transpiration Minister Michel Najjar told
reporters after meeting with the Russians that they expressed a desire
to cooperate and would offer technical support for the silos repair at
the port of Beirut. Najjar said the Russians were also interested in
building a silos in the port of the northern city of Tripoli. The Russian
team will spend three days at each facility “and they will study the
possibility of building new grain silos,” he said.In April,
representatives of several German companies outlined a
multi-billion-dollar plan to rebuild the port of Beirut and surrounding
neighborhoods. Germany’s consortium, led by Hamburg Port Consulting and
Colliers, was the first to visit Lebanon with a plan in hand that they
presented to Lebanese officials. In 2019, Lebanon signed a deal with
Russia’s largest oil company, Rosneft, to upgrade and operate storage
installations in Tripoli. The deal made Rosneft manage storage
operations.
Russia, China declare friendship treaty extension, hail ties-VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV-Mon, June 28, 2021, 8:07 AM
MOSCOW
(AP) — The leaders of Russia and China on Monday hailed increasingly
close ties between their countries and announced the extension of a
20-year-old friendship treaty, a show of unity amid their tensions with
the West.Speaking in a video call with Chinese President Xi Jinping,
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the treaty signed in July
2001 in Moscow helped take relations between Moscow and Beijing to an
“unprecedented height” and would be extended for another five years. The
Russian leader noted that the coordination of foreign policy efforts by
Russia and China has played a “stabilizing role in global affairs.”Xi in
his opening remarks emphasized the importance of a “strategic
cooperation” between Moscow and Beijing in defending their common
interests on the global stage. He added that Russia and China have
worked to uphold a “true multilateralism and global justice.”Putin and
Xi have developed strong personal ties to bolster a “strategic
partnership” between the two former Communist rivals as they vie with
the West for influence and face soaring tensions in relations with the
U.S. and its allies. While Moscow and Beijing in the past rejected the
possibility of forging a military alliance, Putin said last fall that
such a prospect can’t be ruled out entirely.During Monday's call, Putin
congratulated Xi on the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of
China celebrated Thursday, saying that China is marking it with “new
achievements in the country's social-economic development and on the
international stage” and recalling Soviet support for the Chinese
communists.Moscow marked the CPC's centennial by sharing historic
documents on Soviet-Chinese links with Beijing.

Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell

it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under
falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord
GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a
precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not
make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to

and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

With tripartite summit,
Iraq, Egypt and Jordan pitch ‘common vision’ for Mideast-Meeting in
Baghdad, leaders call for renewed efforts to reach ‘just and
comprehensive peace’ between Israel and Palestinians and for creation of
independent Palestinian state-By Agencies-jun 28,21-Today, 8:34 am
BAGHDAD,
Iraq — Egypt, Jordan and Iraq agreed to bolster security and economic
cooperation at a tripartite summit Sunday that saw an Egyptian head of
state visit Iraq for the first time in three decades. The visits by
Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and Jordan’s King Abdullah II
came as Iraq seeks to move closer to Arab allies of the United States in
the Middle East.Iraq is also seeking to establish itself as a mediator
between Arab countries and Iran, after reportedly hosting talks in April
between Tehran and Riyadh.Sissi and Abdullah met Iraqi President Barham
Saleh and Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi, with Saleh saying the
encounter was “an eloquent message amid enormous regional
challenges.”“Iraq’s recovery paves the way to an integrated system for
our region built on the fight against extremism, respect for sovereignty
and economic partnership,” Saleh said on Twitter. The summit held
between Kadhemi and his guests broached regional issues, as well as ways
of bolstering cooperation between Iraq, Jordan and Egypt in the fields
of security, energy and trade, according to a joint statement released
at the end of the meeting. The leaders discussed a “political solution”
to Syria’s 10-year civil war based on UN resolutions “that would
preserve its security and stability and provide adequate conditions for
the return of refugees.”The Syria conflict has killed hundreds of
thousands and displaced millions, with refugees flooding the borders of
neighboring countries including Jordan, which lacks in resources and
faces economic hardships. The leaders welcomed efforts underway to
restore stability in Libya and Yemen, and called for the departure of
foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya. They called for renewed
efforts to reach a “just and comprehensive peace” between Israel and the
Palestinians, and for the creation of an independent Palestinian
state. They also hailed Egypt’s role in negotiating an end to deadly
hostilities between Israel and the Gaza Strip’s terrorist rulers Hamas
in May, and Cairo’s pledge to help rebuild the coastal enclave.Kadhemi
had set the tone at the start of the summit, saying the three countries
would “try to shape a common vision… through cooperation and
coordination” regarding Syria, Libya, Yemen and Israel.Sissi is the
first Egyptian president to visit Baghdad since Iraqi dictator Saddam
Hussein’s troops invaded Kuwait in 1990.Relations between Baghdad and
Cairo have improved in recent years, and officials from the two
countries have conducted visits. The Jordanian king visited in early 2019
for the first time in 10 years.Media reports revealed that Iranian and
Saudi officials met in Baghdad in April, their first high-level meeting
since Riyadh cut diplomatic ties with Tehran in 2016.Iraqi analyst Ihsan
al-Shamari said that Sunday’s summit was “a message for the United
States that Iraq will not only have relations with Iran at the expense
of Arab countries.”In a statement, US State Department spokesman Ned
Price said Washington welcomed the “historic” visit, and called it “an
important step in strengthening regional economic and security ties
between Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan and to advance regional
stability.”Analysts have long said that Iraq is a battleground for
influence between arch-foes Washington and Tehran with whom it maintains
good relations.
Associated Press-Blinken, Lapid meet in Rome
amid reset US-Israel relations-LAURIE KELLMAN, MATTHEW LEE and ELLEN
KNICKMEYER-Sun, June 27, 2021, 3:17 AM
ROME (AP) — Hush-hush
diplomacy. In-person visits. And a very public no-surprises agreement on
Iran.U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Israeli Foreign
Minister Yair Lapid met in Rome on Sunday as their new governments look
to turn the page on former President Donald Trump and former Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose close alliance aggravated partisan
divisions within both countries. Now, with Trump sidelined in Florida and
Netanyahu leading the opposition, President Joe Biden and Prime
Minister Naftali Bennett are focused on pragmatic diplomacy rather than
dramatic initiatives that risk fomenting opposition at home or
distracting from other priorities.“In the past few years, mistakes were
made,” Lapid told Blinken as they sat down for talks in a Rome hotel.
“Israel’s bipartisan standing was hurt. We will fix those mistakes
together.”Lapid said he had spoken with Democrats and Republicans since
taking office and had “reminded them all that we share America’s most
basic, basic values — freedom, democracy, free markets and constant
search for peace.”Blinken noted that even though the two governments are
new, “the foundation that we’re working on is one of an enduring
partnership, a relationship, friendship between the United States and
Israel.”The push means aiming for smaller achievements, such as shoring
up the informal cease-fire that ended last month's war with Gaza's
militant Hamas rulers and replenishing Israel's Iron Dome defense
system. A major push to revive the long-dormant peace process between
Israel and the Palestinians could unsettle the delicate balance.“Nobody
thinks it’s a good idea to start charging through on a major new peace
initiative,” said Ilan Goldenberg, a Mideast security expert at the
nonprofit Center for a New American Security. “But there are things you
can do quietly under the radar, on the ground, to improve the
situation.”That approach — of managing the conflict rather than trying
to solve it — may succeed in papering over domestic divisions. But it
also maintains a status quo that the Palestinians find increasingly
oppressive and hopeless, and which has fueled countless cycles of
unrest. The Americans and Israelis will try to work out differences away
from the public, as in Biden's “quiet" diplomacy, when he privately
urged Netanyahu to wind down the Israel-Hamas war ahead of a truce that
took effect May 21.“We believe the way to discuss those disagreements is
through direct and professional conversation, not a press conference,"
Lapid said. Both governments will try to preserve Israel's fragile
governing coalition, in part by reducing provocations that played a part
in sparking the 11-day war that claimed at least 254 Palestinian lives
and killed 13 people in Israel. The new coalition in Israel shares little
beyond the conviction that Netanyahu had to go. It's composed of eight
parties, each effectively with veto power on decisions. So if even one
party bolts, Israel's government would be at serious risk of collapse,
with Netanyahu waiting just offstage. At least in the short term, Lapid, a
centrist, will be Israel's point man on repairs to the tattered
relationship with Biden and the Democrats. The party controls both
houses of Congress but is increasingly divided on the Mideast conflict,
with progressive members calling for the U.S. to exert more pressure on
Israel.“What they’re building now is mutual trust,” said Michael Oren,
former Israeli ambassador to the United States under Netanyahu. “I
expect a change of tone rather than of substance... but there's a
possibility that it could produce something better for Israel.”Topping
the agenda in both countries are talks in Vienna over reviving Iran's
2015 accord with world powers to limit Tehran's ability to develop
nuclear weapons. Trump, with Netanyahu's backing, pulled the U.S. out of
the deal in 2018 and imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic. Biden
promised to restore and expand the agreement. Now, Israel's new
government seems intent on staying engaged and trying to influence the
talks, rather than scuttle them.“Israel has some serious reservations
about the Iran nuclear deal that is being put together in Vienna,” Lapid
said, before pledging that Israel would make its objections privately.
Netanyahu had loudly and publicly opposed the deal when the Obama
administration was negotiating it.“We have the same objective," Blinken
said. "Sometimes we differ on the tactics, and we, I think, are very
clear and direct to each other when that’s the case and that’s exactly
how it’s supposed to be.”Even the right-leaning Bennett, who is
ideologically aligned with the hawkish Netanyahu, has toned down the
rhetoric on Iran.“We will continue to consult with our friends,
persuade, discuss, and share information and insights out of mutual
respect,” Bennett said Thursday. “But at the end of the day, we will be
responsible for our own fate, nobody else.”Tamping down tensions — or at
least not inflaming them — is a key strategy, the officials
said.Blinken spoke of the need to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict but did not offer any kind of timetable or any strategy to
“offer a more hopeful future for everyone: Palestinians and Israelis
alike with equal measures of opportunity and dignity.”And, while the
Biden administration supports and hopes to expand on the Trump-era
Abraham Accords that normalized relations between Israel and several
Arab countries, Blinken said they “are not a substitute for engaging on
the issues between Israelis and Palestinians that need to be
resolved.”On the U.S. side, the Biden administration has made clear it
wants to extricate the country from intractable conflicts in the Middle
East and focus on other challenges, such as climate change and
competition with China. On Monday, outgoing Israeli President Reuven
Rivlin is to visit Washington at Biden's invitation. A group of House
Democrats are planning an official trip to Israel as soon as Congress’
July 4th receSS.There's even talk of Lapid and Bennett traveling to
Washington later in the summer, separately or together, the officials
said. Bennett will serve as prime minister for the first two years,
followed by Lapid, the architect of the coalition. All the officials
spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss administration plans and
logistics, which have not been finalized. So far, the reset seems to be
functioning. But with the Israeli coalition barely two weeks old,
significant challenges loom.Biden has moved to reverse Netanyahu-backed
Trump policies that alienated the Palestinians, and the administration
has said Israelis and Palestinians should enjoy equal measures of
security and prosperity. But the U.S. has yet to explain how it intends
to bring that about without ending Israel's half-century military
occupation of the West Bank, its blockade on Hamas-ruled Gaza and
discriminatory policies in Jerusalem that fueled a spring of
unrest.___Kellman reported from Tel Aviv, Israel, and Knickmeyer

SCIENTISTS HAVE DISCOVERED THE EXACT YEAR OF THE APOCALYPSE ON EARTH-June 14, 2021
Predictions
of the imminent death of the Earth, and with it of all mankind, have
become a habit. Many pseudo-scientific experts have repeatedly proposed a
new near-term date for the apocalypse, which has repeatedly passed
unnoticed for the planet. However, scientists at Toho University in
Japan, together with NASA colleagues, calculated a potentially realistic
date for the Earth’s death. Researchers are confident that the
apocalypse will occur in 1,000 002 021.It is after a billion years that
the planet may become uninhabitable. And it will be the Sun’s fault,
whose activity will change dramatically by then. This will increase
temperature and radiation, resulting in the burning of all oxygen on
Earth. At the same time, according to researchers, man today can do
absolutely nothing to enable descendants to continue living on their
native planet. Therefore, the idea of finding a new planet for life is
not just a whim of scientists, but an absolute necessity for mankind.Of
course, there’s plenty of time before the researchers calculate the
year. But who knows how things will change in the future. Which means
it’s too early for humanity to relax. This article was written by Janis

Canada weather: Heat hits record 46.6C as US north-west
also sizzles-Mon, June 28, 2021, 10:32 AM-Heatwave sufferer in
Vancouver, British Columbia
Canada has recorded its highest ever
temperature as the country's west and the US Pacific north-west frazzle
in an unprecedented heatwave.Lytton in British Columbia soared to 46.6C
(116F) on Sunday, breaking an 84-year-old record, officials said.A "heat
dome" - static high pressure acting like a lid on a cooking pot - has
set records in many other areas. The US and Canada have both warned
citizens of "dangerous" heat levels that could persist this week.Experts
say that climate change is expected to increase the frequency of
extreme weather events, such as heatwaves. However, linking any single
event to global warming is complicated.BBC forecaster Nick Miller says
that "heat dome" isn't a strictly defined meteorological term but has
become associated with describing large areas of high pressure, leading
to clear skies and hot sunny days. The longer the high pressure pattern
lasts, the longer the heatwave is and temperatures can build day by
day. This high pressure zone is huge, from California right up to
Canada's Arctic territories and stretching inland through Idaho.Sales of
air-conditioners and fans have surged, and cooling shelters have sprung
up. Some bars and restaurants - and even a swimming pool - were deemed
too hot to function.Lytton, which is about 150 miles (250km) north-east
of Vancouver, surged past the previous Canadian record. That was set in
two towns in Saskatchewan - Yellow Grass and Midale - back in July 1937
at a balmy 45C (113F).Lytton was not alone. More than 40 other spots in
British Columbia set new records.Environment Canada senior climatologist
David Phillips told CTV: "I like to break a record, but this is like
shattering and pulverising them. It's warmer in parts of western Canada
than in Dubai."He said there was a chance of topping 47C somewhere, with
Monday the likeliest day.British Columbia's power providers said there
had been a surge in demand for electricity to keep air-conditioners
running.Environment Canada said Alberta, and parts of Saskatchewan,
Yukon and the Northwest Territories, should also be on alert. In its
warning, it forecast a "prolonged, dangerous, and historic heatwave will
persist through this week", with temperatures 10C-15C above normal, at
near 40C in many places.'Historic' heat in US north-west-The Pacific
north-west has also been breaking records, particularly in parts of
Washington and Oregon states. The US National Weather Service called the
heatwave conditions "historic" and said they would persist through the
week, "with numerous daily, monthly and even all-time records likely to
be set".Seattle and Portland, often the target of jokes about rainy
climates, could be among those setting their hottest temperatures on
Monday. Both have already surpassed 40C.Oregon eased Covid attendance
restrictions to open up swimming pools and air-conditioned areas like
shopping centres. But Seattle in Washington had to close one pool
because of "unsafe, dangerous pool deck temperatures".Fruit growers have
been rushing to pick crops, fearing the heat could shrivel cherries and
other fruit. Pickers have been starting at dawn and stopping at
lunchtime in the unbearable temperatures.BJ Thurlby, president of the
Northwest Cherry Growers, told the Seattle Times: "We are travelling in
absolutely uncharted waters."The US track and field Olympic qualifying
trials had to be halted in Eugene, Oregon, on Sunday, as the crowd was
told to leave the stadium for safety reasons. Some Covid vaccination
centres also closed because of the heat. Some areas along the coast could
cool a little later in the week, but Boise, Idaho, could see a week of
40C+ temperatures. The National Weather Service said parts of the state
could suffer "one of the most extreme and prolonged heatwaves in the
recorded history of the Inland Northwest".The warnings for all were to
stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities, and check on vulnerable
neighbours. We can't say for certain this brutal heatstorm has been
caused by emissions from industrial society, but it's exactly the sort
of extreme scientists have warned of as CO2 levels continue to rise.In
fact scientists have got much better at linking some extreme events to
climate change, such as the heatwave that scorched Europe in 2019, which
researchers say was made 100 times more likely due to CO2.What's
extra-concerning is that these temperatures have been reached with
global temperatures just 1.1 C above preindustrial times.Science body,
the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, judges that we're likely
to exceed 1.5C above that level before long. And at current rates we
will overshoot a 2C rise - possibly higher.Yet China and India continue
to build new coal-fired power stations. And the G7 - Canada, France,
Germany, Japan, the UK and the US - won't give a date to phase them
out.The UK and others are still drilling for more oil and gas to burn,
saying it'll be needed to 2050.It's certainly looking like a climate
emergency.
Pacific Northwest bakes under once-in-a-millennium heat dome-Jeff Berardelli-Mon, June 28, 2021, 7:08 AM
The
heat wave baking the U.S. Pacific Northwest and British Columbia,
Canada, is of an intensity never recorded by modern humans. By one
measure it is more rare than a once in a 1,000 year event — which means
that if you could live in this particular spot for 1,000 years, you'd
likely only experience a heat dome like this once, if ever.
Portland,
Oregon, has already broken its all-time record hottest temperature at
108 degrees on Saturday and the peak of the heat wave has not even been
reached yet. Canada is expected to register the nation's all-time
highest temperature before the event is done. These are extremely
dangerous numbers, especially in a region not used to heat like this,
where many people do not have air conditioning.By Monday, some — if not
all — of the all-time record highs seen below are forecast to break,
with many more cities not listed here expected to achieve the same
feat.he heat is being caused by a combination of a significant
atmospheric blocking pattern on top of a human-caused climate changed
world where baseline temperatures are already a couple to a few degrees
higher than nature intended. This heat wave comes on the heels of another
historic heat wave less than two weeks ago that baked the U.S.
Intermountain West, Desert Southwest and California with hundreds of
record highs.Meanwhile, the eastern U.S. is also seeing the heat ratchet
up, with "feels-like" temperatures pushing 100 degrees by Monday and
Tuesday in the major cities of the I-95 corridor. The back-to-back and
dueling heat waves are made more likely by a very wavy jet stream and
our unnaturally heating climate.Pacific Northwest heat wave-Sunday and
Monday are projected to be the hottest days of the heat wave along the
Northwest coast from Portland to Seattle. Even before the peak of the
heat had been reached on Saturday, many records have already been
broken, with even hotter temperatures to come. It's never been hotter in
Portland than it was yesterday; all part of an ongoing, historic, and
dangerous heatwave in the NW; many homes don't have A/C. @WeatherProf

(@MikeAugustyniak) June 27, 2021-As the heat dome continues to build,
cities like Portland will likely break their all-time heat record again,
on back-to-back days. On Sunday the thermometer reached a staggering
112 degrees Fahrenheit — that's 5 degrees higher than what had been the
all-time record of 107 degrees, prior to Saturday's 108.In Seattle,
after a record high of 102 on Saturday, the thermometer is likely to
shatter its all-time record high of 103 degrees on Monday, with a
forecast high of 108. In its history, Seattle has only reached 100
degrees three times before. Remarkably, in this one heat wave, highs in
the city will easily top 100 degrees 3 days in a row. Some of the inland
cities in eastern Washington and Oregon will likely max out in the
115-120 degree range. And while the heat will break along the coast of
Washington and Oregon by midweek, the record heat will continue over
inland Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana late in the week. For the
past week, as computer models have consistently forecast seemingly
unbelievable numbers, meteorologists struggled to grasp how a heat wave
of this magnitude could even be possible, given this region has never
experienced anything of this magnitude before. Were the models wrong?
Or, given climate change, should we now expect the unexpected — is this
now just becoming routine? Projected temperatures on Sun-Mon across
PacNW are so extreme that I think folks are having difficulty putting
them into context. There remains some uncertainty, but places along I-5
corridor from Medford to Seattle have potential to *shatter* all-time
records. #ORwx #WAwx pic.twitter.com/W9yr7XXxLF— Daniel Swain
(@Weather_West) June 23, 2021-Turns out, the models were correct and we
should expect extreme heat waves, even unprecedented ones like this to
become more routine. "There is no context really, in the sense that
there is no analog in our past for what we are likely to see this week,"
says Dr. Michael Mann, distinguished professor of atmospheric science
at Pennsylvania State University and author of the new book "The New
Climate War."But calling it a new normal does not suffice says Mann,
"Some people called this a 'new normal. But it is worse than that,"
explained Mann. "We will continue to see more and more extreme heat
waves, droughts, wildfires and floods as long as we continue to warm the
planet through fossil fuel burning and carbon emissions."As shown in
the below illustration from the Oregon Climate Assessment, this is only
the beginning of the heating expected if humanity continues burning
fossil fuels. By 2100, temperatures are expected to be 7 to 10 degrees
above what they naturally should, and that would mean a dramatic
increase in extreme heat waves. As all-time record heat approaches the

June 26, 2021-In the case of this specific heat dome, which is a
mountain of hot air stacked vertically through the atmosphere, it is a
once in a 1,000 or even 10,000-year event for this particular area. How
do we know? It's actually quite simple to explain. The intensity of a
heat dome is measured by how "thick" the atmosphere is at a given spot.
The hotter the air in that column, the larger the thickness of air in
that column, because heat expands. In our historical record of North
America's Pacific Northwest this heat dome registers a statistical
standard deviation from the average of greater than 4.In layman terms,
that means it falls more than 4 deviations to the right of the center of
a typical bell curve (shown below) and that equates to values with less
than a 99.99% chance of happening. In other words, statistically
speaking, there is a 1 in 10,000 chance of experiencing this value. So,
if you could possibly live in that spot for 10,000 years, you'd likely
only experience that kind of heat dome once, if ever.To put climate
extremes into perspective we measure against the average. The sigma is
the standard deviation of a normal distribution of expected values. In
this case the heat dome sigma max is 4.4 - that means it's outside of
99.99% of expected values or a 1/10,000+ chance (1/2)
pic.twitter.com/8raIMAngkg— Jeff Berardelli (@WeatherProf) June 27,
2021-It is worth noting that our historical record is limited and
statistics like this are very sensitive to small changes. But if it
seems like an overstatement to say there is a 1 in 10,000 chance of
having a heat dome like this, it is certainly not an overstatement to
say this is the kind of event you would expect to experience once in
1000 years. But we will know the exact value soon, as some of the best
extreme weather attribution scientists are likely to be hard at work
doing rapid attribution — a new type of cutting edge science — this week
to determine the actual values and to what degree climate change has
contributed. What it means for the Pacific NW is that there will be a
very high attribution to climate change for the upcoming event and the
exact numbers will depend on how hot it really gets. And the hotter it
gets, the larger the attribution will be.Regardless of cause though,
stay safe!— Gavin Schmidt (@ClimateOfGavin) June 25, 2021-So what is
causing this heat wave? Like any heat wave, it is being caused by a
highly amplified jet stream pattern. These extreme jet stream
perturbations are a natural, normal part of the atmosphere. But the
climate science community is split as to whether these extreme jet
stream perturbations are becoming even more likely because of climate
change — a phenomena known as the wavy jet stream.Along with a more
wavy, buckling and slow-moving jet stream, comes a phenomena called
"blocking". This is when waves in the jet stream become so elongated
that they break off, sit and spin. In this case there is a textbook type
of block called an Omega block over the Pacific Northwest because it
looks like the Greek letter Omega. Inside this Omega, the heat pools and
intensifies. There is a faction of climate scientists who believe that a
warming climate — specifically the Arctic — results in a more wandering
jet stream at certain times of the year. But it is hotly debated; there
is an equal amount of research that does not arrive at this
conclusion.Mann and his colleagues have been involved in some of this
research, in which he finds that a specific type of Northern Hemisphere
blocking — what he calls Quasi Resonant Amplification — will increase by
50% this century under business as usual human-forced climate warming.
"I do indeed believe that the phenomenon we describe in our work played a
very important role in the record heat wave," Mann said.As for the lack
of consensus in the climate research on the wavy jet stream and
blocking, Mann thinks it has more to do with the current state of
climate modeling "This is an area where current generation models are
NOT capturing a real-world climate connection," Mann explained.Whatever
the cause, the result of an extreme jet stream pattern is extreme
weather across many parts of the nation and globe. Over the past few
days, the central U.S. has seen over a foot of rain with flash flooding
along a stalled front. And, starting on Sunday and continuing through
most of the upcoming week, the major East Coast cities will also sweat
through a heat wave — although not nearly as intense as the one in the
West — with feels-like temperatures near 100 degrees from Washington
D.C. to Philadelphia and New York City. While natural swings between hot
and cold patterns will continue, the trend is clear — extreme heat waves
are bound to become more common, more extreme and more deadly in the
coming years. In practice, the solution to worsening extreme weather is a
herculean challenge for humanity, but in theory it is simple: "We can
prevent things from getting worse if we rapidly decarbonize our
civilization," Mann said.Federal officials who probed Twin Towers to

fears-LINDSAY WHITEHURST-Sun, June 27, 2021, 11:20 AM EDT
SALT
LAKE CITY (AP) — Many Americans aching for normalcy as pandemic
restrictions end are looking forward to traditional Fourth of July
fireworks. But with a historic drought in the U.S. West and fears of
another devastating wildfire season, officials are canceling displays,
passing bans on setting off fireworks or begging for caution.Fireworks
already have caused a few small wildfires, including one started by a
child in northern Utah and another in central California. Last year, a
pyrotechnic device designed for a baby's gender reveal celebration
sparked a California blaze that killed a firefighter during a U.S.
wildfire season that scorched the second-highest amount of land in
nearly 40 years. Some regions of the American West are experiencing their
worst drought conditions in more than a century this year, said
Jennifer Balch, director of Earth Lab at the University of Colorado.
People setting off fireworks at home is a concern because of both the
tinder-box conditions ripe for starting wildfires and the threat of
injuries. Last year, injuries spiked to their highest level in 15 years
after the pandemic canceled large gatherings, federal data shows.“As a
fire scientist, I’m bracing myself for this fire season because of how
dry and hot it is already,” Balch said. “I think fireworks right now are
a terrible idea.”Fireworks industry professionals, who also stressed
caution in drought-prone areas, expect strong sales despite a shortage
caused by pandemic-related manufacturing slowdowns and trade
disruptions.“We think we're going to have a tremendous year,” said James
Fuller, a fireworks safety expert with Alabama-based TNT
Fireworks. While fireworks are integral to the country's Independence Day
celebrations, they ignite thousands of fires a year — including one
that burned Bobbie Uno’s home in Clearfield, Utah, on the holiday last
year. She had to jump out of the way before it struck the side of her
house.“Within five seconds, my house, from the bushes to the rooftop, it
was burning,” Uno said. The blaze caused $60,000 in damage and forced
her family out of their home for weeks.“I want everyone to be aware of
the danger, because it’s scary even in a small cul-de-sac,” Uno
said.Several Utah cities are banning people from setting off their own
fireworks this year during the record drought, but many Republicans are
against a statewide prohibition. GOP Salt Lake County Councilwoman Aimee
Winder Newton supports restrictions but thinks this year is a bad time
for a blanket ban.“We’re just coming out of this pandemic where people
already felt like government was restricting them in so many ways,” she
said. “When you issue bans arbitrarily, we could have a situation where
people who weren’t going to light fireworks purposely go and buy
fireworks to just send a message to government.”State fireworks laws
vary considerably across the U.S., but local bans on personal fireworks
are popping up from Montana to Oregon, which was stricken by massive
wildfires last year.In Arizona, which already is being scorched by more
than a dozen wildfires, many cities have canceled their public fireworks
shows. The Yavapai-Apache Nation typically hosts a display outside its
casino near the central Arizona city of Camp Verde.“This year, with
conditions being worse than last year, we decided in May that we would
not have fireworks,” said James Perry, a spokesman for the tribe’s Cliff
Castle Casino Hotel. “Based on the large fires currently burning in and
around our community, we’re happy with our decision.”It's a similar
story in Colorado, where dozens of shows have been scuttled, including
in Steamboat Springs, a ski town where firefighters are already spread
thin.“The grass always catches on fire ... why are we doing something
that causes fire when fire’s our biggest issue?” said Winnie
DelliQuadri, town special projects manager. But in neighboring Wyoming,
business is booming at fireworks stores, including sales of products
prohibited elsewhere. The parking lots fill on weekends, and many cars
have out-of-state plates.“It’s not just Colorado,” said Ben Laws,
manager of Pyro City. “We see people from Nebraska, we see people from
Montana, we see people from all over coming to buy.”Other cities,
including Boise, Idaho, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, are working to ban
personal fireworks while keeping their public displays, where safety
precautions are often stronger and firefighters are on alert. In North
Dakota, where more than two-thirds of the state is in extreme or
exceptional drought — the two worst categories — some areas are passing
local bans. In South Dakota, where conditions are somewhat less dire,
the governor is fighting the federal government to hold a fireworks
display at Mount Rushmore.A show that draws tens of thousands of people
to Lake Tahoe, Nevada, near the California state line, was originally
canceled for the second year in a row, but organizers later decided to
mount a “smaller, safe fireworks experience." Holding fireworks shows
over water is one of the safer ways to celebrate, said Balch, the
professor. The industry urges people lighting their own fireworks to
follow local restrictions, pick a flat location a safe distance from
homes, have a water source at hand to douse used products and dispose of
them carefully. Some safety officials would rather see people avoid
lighting their own fireworks all together. Michele Steinberg with the
National Fire Protection Association pointed to federal data showing
15,600 Americans went to emergency rooms for fireworks-related injuries
last year, thousands more than the year before.“I love watching the
fireworks displays, but they’re honestly not safe in consumer hands,"
she said. “Even a sparkler can get up to 1,200 degrees, which is
actually how hot a wildfire burns.”___Associated Press writers Felicia

Associated Press-Up to 900,000 in Ethiopia's Tigray face famine, US says-Sat, June 26, 2021, 7:42 AM
NAIROBI,
Kenya (AP) — The United States estimates that up to 900,000 people in
Ethiopia’s Tigray region now face famine conditions amid a deadly
conflict, even as the prime minister says there is “no hunger” there. The
hunger crisis in Tigray is the world’s worst in a decade, and the new
famine findings are “terrifying,” the head of the U.S. Agency for
International Development, Samantha Power, said Friday, adding that
millions more people are at risk. The new estimate more than doubles the
warning issued earlier this month by the United Nations and aid groups
that more than 350,000 people face famine conditions in Tigray.Even as
scattered reports emerge of people starving to death, the real number of
people facing famine conditions is unknown because active fighting and
access restrictions keep aid workers from reaching all parts of the
region of 6 million people.“Conditions will worsen in the coming months,
particularly as Tigray enters the July-to-September lean season, unless
humanitarian assistance reaches the populations most in need,” the new
USAID analysis says. This is forced starvation, Tigray residents and some
observers have said. Witnesses have described being blocked by
Ethiopian soldiers, backed by soldiers from neighboring Eritrea, from
planting their fields or having their crops looted or burned since the
conflict erupted in November.Ethiopia’s government says it has delivered
food aid to millions of people in Tigray even as its troops pursue the
region’s former leaders after political tensions exploded into war.But
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2019, in an
interview aired this week with a state-affiliated network expressed
concern that outside aid to Tigray might end up supporting the Tigray
fighters, recalling a similar situation during Ethiopia’s devastating
famine in the 1980s. Such a situation can’t happen again, he said.“There
is no hunger in Tigray,” the prime minister told the BBC this
week.“This is false,” Power's tweet said Friday. The new famine warning
adds to pressure on Ethiopia's government for a cease-fire, especially
after an Ethiopian military airstrike this week on a busy market in
Tigray killed at least 64 people and the aid group Doctors Without
Borders on Friday said three staffers had been murdered in the region.
