Gantz says Israel will ‘eventually succeed’ in killing Hamas military chief Deif-Defense minister warns all Hamas leaders remain in danger, while calling for international effort to rebuild and develop the Strip-By TOI staff-MAY 22,21-Today, 6:02 am

A day after the start of a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza, Defense Minister Benny Gantz said Friday night that Israel will eventually succeed in killing the head of Hamas’s military wing, Muhammad Deif, and warned that all Hamas leaders remained potential targets.Gantz, speaking to Channel 12 news, also called for a major international effort to rebuild and develop Gaza to improve the lives of its residents.As Hamas celebrated its ostensible gains in the 11 days of combat, Gantz dismissed such claims.“We achieved all the goals we set for ourselves — severely hitting Hamas, its operatives, infrastructure and anything to do with its offensive capabilities,” he said. Meanwhile, he said that other than rocket fire — much of which was intercepted by Israeli defenses, “Hamas didn’t manage to do anything effective.”While Hamas will “always push the victory narrative,” he asserted, in truth “Gaza is in ruins because of Hamas’s actions.”Asked how long he believed the calm would last, Gantz said: “The next round may be very far off, may be very near. It depends on Hamas’s behavior. We will not return to the reality before [the operation].”According to an unsourced report on Channel 13, the Israeli military has recommended to the government that to create a new balance of power on the Gaza border, Israel respond to any new rocket fire by destroying buildings in the Strip.It was revealed this week that during the latest operation, the Israel Defense Forces attempted to kill Deif at least twice, but both times he escaped unscathed.“It will not be the last time we try,” Gantz said. “We’ll succeed in the end… For all Hamas leaders responsible for firing and launching terror against civilians — their blood is on their own hands.”Gantz called for a major international effort to rebuild Gaza, that would involved the Palestinian Authority, countries of the region and others.“If we are only pulled toward where the extremists take us, nothing good will grow,” he said. “We need to look for moderate channels and condition [aid] on proper civil development of the Gaza Strip.”Earlier in the day Gantz said the truce created an opportunity for peace and it was now time for diplomacy to build a new reality “on the rubble of the homes of the Hamas leaders.” He added: “If we don’t act diplomatically, quickly and wisely,” this operation will go down as “simply another round of conflict to be followed by the next one.”But he stressed that such a project would depend on the return of Israeli prisoners and the bodies of slain soldiers that have been held by Hamas for long years.Earlier Friday Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that henceforth Israel would take a much tougher stance toward Hamas, and that any future rocket fire from Gaza would be met with “a whole new level of force.” He said Israel had achieved its military objectives in Gaza with “extraordinary” success.The prime minister said that the “rules of the game were changed” and there would now be no tolerance of any rocket fire from the Gaza Strip.“We changed the equation not only as regards to the operation but also as regards the future. If Hamas thinks we will tolerate a ‘drizzle’ of rockets, it is mistaken,” the prime minister said, referring to the sporadic fire often seen from Gaza between rounds of more major conflict in recent years.“We will respond with a whole new level of force to every instance of aggression against the Gaza-envelope communities or anywhere else in Israel,” he said.The prime minister also said that the success of the entire operation — including the thwarting of Hamas drones and most rocket attacks, via an improved Iron Dome missile defense system, and countering Hamas attempts to attack from the sea — meant that the terror group would be more careful in the future about attacking Israel.“Most of Hamas’s capabilities have been harmed — far more seriously than Hamas commanders imagined. Hamas thought it could fire on Jerusalem and the cities of Israel, and we would just react with business as usual,” the prime minister said.Netanyahu later issued an English language statement:The premier said that Israel fulfilled its objective to deal Hamas a “blow it cannot imagine” by destroying the terror tunnel network it built in Gaza; the military turned it into a “death trap.”Israel destroyed “a considerable proportion” of Hamas’s internal tunnel routes, its “metro,” in which Hamas had invested vast resources, the prime minister said.“We harmed more than 100 kilometers” of that network, and turned it into “a death trap for the terrorists,” Netanyahu said.The prime minister said that although the terror group wanted to carry out many cross-border attacks — including at the tail-end of the operation — it was thwarted by Israel’s subterranean barrier, which detected and “destroyed” the terrorists.Netanyahu added that not everything regarding the outcome and impact of the Israeli strikes is yet known to the public, or even to Hamas: “We did daring and innovative things, without getting dragged into an unnecessary misadventure.”Aboveground, he said Israel killed over 200 terrorists, including 25 senior officials.“And those who didn’t die, know today that we can reach them everywhere– above or below ground,” the prime minister said, calling it “an achievement no military has ever achieved.”Hamas may be bragging as it emerges from the tunnels, he said, “but they realize the destruction they brought upon themselves inside Gaza… they know we set them back years.”The premier said the IDF made “extreme efforts” not to harm civilians, and that no other country in the world takes such steps.Netanyahu said he was sad for every civilian killed in the fighting. Israel caused maximum casualties to the Hamas terror group while minimizing Israeli casualties, he said.Referring to apparent criticism that the ceasefire does not provide for the return of Israeli captives held in Gaza, Netanyahu said that Israel has not forgotten civilians Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed and the bodies of IDF soldiers Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul, and is committed to returning them home.

81% of young Americans back Biden’s response to Gaza violence, poll finds-Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy pushes back at notion that his party has shifted position on Israel: ‘Democrats believe in a two-state future; Israel’s politics have moved, not ours’-By Jacob Magid-MAY 21,21-Today, 11:18 pm

A majority of registered voters in the US approve of US President Joe Biden’s handling of the recent violence between Israel and Hamas, according to a new poll published Friday.The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted on May 14-15, five days before a ceasefire was reached early Friday morning.Since the beginning of Operation Guardian of the Walls, the Biden administration took a firm stance in favor of Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas rocket fire, including blocking several United Nations Security Council statements.That position held throughout the entire 11-day conflict, but about mid-way through the US picked up its efforts aimed at reaching a ceasefire after giving Israel several days to target Hamas infrastructure.Fifty-six percent of registered voters indicated they approve of Biden’s handling of the recent violence, while 44% said they disapproved, the poll said.The numbers changed drastically based on age group: 50% of 50-64 year-olds approved of Biden’s handling of the Gaza violence; 56% of 35-49 year-olds approve; and 81% of 18-34 year-olds approve.Roughly eight in 10 Democratic voters approved of Biden’s handling, along with 69 percent of independents. Seventy-seven percent of Republicans said they disapproved of Biden’s handling of the issue.The poll did examine which aspects of Biden’s policies the respondents approved of, nor did it try to explain the age shift.The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 932 registered voters. It had a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, a Biden-ally, pushed back  Friday against the growing narrative that his party is moving to the left on Israel.“Listening to NPR talking about how the Democratic Party is ‘shifting’ on Israel. Such a tired, lazy take. Democrats believe in a two-state future. Always have. If we’re more critical of Israel, it’s bc their politics have moved, not ours,” he tweeted.Indeed the vast majority of Democratic lawmakers back a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but a growing handful have avoided backing the proposal, such as some of the members of the popular “Squad” of progressive Democrats.Murphy is the chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counterterrorism.Biden on Thursday hailed the ceasefire agreed between Israel and Hamas, saying that he saw it as a “genuine opportunity” to push forward toward building a lasting peace in the Middle East.“I believe we have a genuine opportunity to make progress and I’m committed to working toward it,” Biden said. He credited the Egyptian government with playing a crucial role in brokering the ceasefire and said he and top White House aides were intensely involved in an “hour by hour” effort to stop the bloodletting.“I believe the Palestinians and Israelis equally deserve to live safely and securely and enjoy equal measures of freedom, prosperity and democracy,” Biden said. “My administration will continue our quiet, relentless diplomacy toward that.”

IDF said to have foiled major attack in hours before ceasefire-TV says IDF identified and killed several terrorists attempting to infiltrate through tunnel and kill soldiers; Israel also said to have delayed truce to carry out major operation-By TOI staff-MAY 21,21-Today, 10:36 pm

The Israel Defense Force foiled a major attack by Hamas in the hours before the ceasefire went into effect, Channel 12 reported Friday, speculating that had the attack succeeded it could have completely derailed the truce.According to the unsourced report, the IDF identified the cell as it made its way through an underground tunnel, apparently intent on emerging in Israel and attacking soldiers.  The air force carried out a precision strike, killing them, the report said.The report noted that with Israel’s newly completed underground barrier, they would not have been able to get past it and attack civilians, but would have been targeting troops deployed within.The IDF declined to comment on the report, but the TV channel noted that the information had been approved for release by the IDF censor.The ceasefire went into effect at 2 a.m. Friday, hours after the cabinet approved the move.Earlier, IDF Spokesperson Hidai Zilberman said the military had passed a message to Hamas that if it conducted a large attack in the hours before the truce, the IDF would retaliate with a massive airstrike on dozens of targets.According to Zilberman, Israeli jets and other aircraft were kept in the air, hovering over Gaza in the hours before the ceasefire to carry out this threat if necessary.Also Friday, Channel 12 reported that the ceasefire had been delayed by up to 48 hours to allow the IDF to carry out a final mission.The report said it had no details on what that mission might have been and noted that Hamas may not even be aware it happened. If it was, it was not acknowledging it.The report said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted at the strike in a press conference earlier Friday.Netanyahu said that not everything regarding the outcome and impact of the Israeli strikes is yet known to the public, or even to Hamas: “We did daring and innovative things, without getting dragged into an unnecessary misadventure.”Netanyahu also said that although the terror group wanted to carry out many cross-border attacks — including at the tail-end of the operation — it was thwarted by Israel’s subterranean barrier, which detected and “destroyed” the terrorists.Aboveground, he said Israel killed over 200 terrorists, including 25 senior officials.“And those who didn’t die, know today that we can reach them everywhere– above or below ground,” the prime minister said, calling it “an achievement no military has ever achieved.”Hamas may be bragging as it emerges from the tunnels, he said, “but they realize the destruction they brought upon themselves inside Gaza… they know we set them back years.”

Iran’s Khamenei says Israel ‘forced to accept defeat-Iranian officials boast of support for Gaza terror groups, calls for Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders to be tried in international courts-By Agencies-MAY 21,21-Today, 9:46 pm

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Friday that Israel was “forced to accept defeat” by Palestinian armed groups, after a ceasefire between the Jewish state and terrorist groups in Gaza.“I thank dear and almighty God for the victory and honor bestowed upon Palestinian fighters,” he said in a statement on his official website.“The continuation of crimes and the ceasefire were both (part of Israel’s) defeat. They were forced to accept defeat,” he added, claiming that Israel was “powerless against the unified rise of Palestine.”“The readiness of the Palestinian youth and the show of power” by armed groups in Gaza “will make Palestine more powerful by the day and the usurping enemy weaker and more despicable,” he added.In his letter, Khamenei also urged all Muslim countries to rally in support of Palestinian people, “whether by strengthening Palestinian forces, with financial support that is needed today more than before, or by rebuilding the infrastructure that was destroyed in Gaza.”Iran is the main supplier of weapons and arms to Hamas and Islamic state.The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which controls the Gaza strip, and other armed groups in the enclave appeared to be holding Friday, after 11 days of fighting.Israeli strikes on Gaza since May 10 have killed 243 Palestinians, including 66 children, Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry says. Fighters are also among those killed. Israel says some of the civilians killed were hit by Palestinian rockets falling short in the Gaza Strip.Rockets fired into Israel from Gaza have claimed 12 lives in the Jewish state, including one child, a teenager and an Israeli soldier, with one Indian and two Thai nationals among those killed, Israeli authorities say.Khamenei also called for legal measures against the Israeli government, including its prime minister.“All the effective elements of this regime and the criminal (Benjamin) Netanyahu must be pursued by international and independent courts and be punished,” he said.The Islamic republic does not recognize Israel, and supporting the Palestinian cause has been a pillar of Iran’s foreign policy since soon after the country’s 1979 revolution.Hamas’s political chief Ismail Haniyeh on Friday thanked Iran for “providing funds and weapons” to the movement.Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman had earlier today praised a “historic victory” and reaffirmed Tehran’s support for the Palestinian cause.“Congratulations to our Palestinian sisters and brothers for the historic victory. Hamas terror chief Ismail Haniyeh on Friday hailed Hamas’s “victory” in the recent hostilities with Israel, saying it had foiled attempts by Israel to integrate into the Arab world.“We have destroyed the project of ‘coexistence’ with Israel, of ‘normalization’ with Israel,” Haniyeh said, apparently referring to the widespread clashes between Israeli Arabs and Jews and Israel’s recent peace agreements with four Arab nations.“What is coming after this battle is not what came before it…you will yet see many [diplomatic] contacts and successes,” Haniyeh said. “We have seen how our nation awoke…to stand behind Jerusalem, Palestine and resistance.”While Israel will struggle to restore ties with its Arab minority after the riots and attacks, it was not immediately evident that the fighting was detrimental to its new ties with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morrocco.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed al-NahyanAbraham and Bahrain Foreign Minister Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, stand on the Blue Room Balcony during the Abraham Accords signing ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House, Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)-Egypt, another Arab nation with a peace agreement with Israel, played a major role in negotiating the ceasefire.“Thank you President [Abdel Fattah] el-Sissi for your important role in restoring calm and advancing security and stability in our region,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted Friday afternoon.Haniyeh also vowed to continue to focus on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount “until Al-Aqsa Mosque is liberated.”The Old City compound saw fresh clashes on Friday.It was not immediately clear how the confrontation had erupted. According to Israeli police, officers acted to contain a riot by Palestinian worshippers at the scene.“Immediately after the noon prayer, a riot broke out on the Temple Mount by hundreds of young people that included throwing stones and throwing a Molotov cocktail at the forces,” Israel Police said in a statement.Israeli security forces and Palestinian Muslim worshippers clash at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, atop of the Temple Mount, on May 21, 2021. (AHMAD GHARABLI / AFP)-The clashes marked the first test of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Frictions at the holy site — with Israeli security forces entering the compound and clashing with Palestinian rioters — were a major factor in the tensions that preceded Hamas’s rocket fire at Jerusalem on May 10, at the start of the 11-day conflict in which over 200 Gazans and 12 Israelis were killed.The Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism, as the site of both biblical temples. It is holy to Muslims as the site of the third holiest shrine in Islam, the Al-Aqsa Mosque.Palestinian terror groups have tied rocket fire from Gaza — which ceased early on Friday morning as the ceasefire took effect — to unrest in Jerusalem connected to both prayer on the Temple Mount during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, as well as the pending eviction of a number of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.Israeli politicians have said the ceasefire was unconditional, with “calm in exchange for calm.” Hamas said that it demanded Israeli concessions at the Temple Mount in exchange for the truce.Palestinians across the West Bank and Gaza celebrated the ostensible Hamas success in the conflict on Friday afternoon, holding large marches in major Palestinian cities.Fatah, Hamas, independents — everyone is happy. Maybe they’re jealous and had hoped their own faction would have a greater role, but even so — they’re pleased. Every patriot is thrilled…that our cause has again shaken the world,” wrote Alaa Abu Diab, a popular comedian and commentator, in a Facebook post.In a protest at Ramallah’s Al-Manara Square, dozens of distinctive green flags with Arabic-language calligraphy could be spotted. The flags are widely seen as symbols of political Islam, and are also often used by Hamas supporters.Demonstrators called out slogans hailing Hamas’s shadowy military commander and terror chief, Mohammad Deif, in the heart of the Fatah-dominated West Bank.“Put sword against sword, we are Mohammad Deif’s men,” the protesters chanted in downtown Ramallah.Immediately after the ceasefire, Hamas claimed victory as thousands of people took to the streets of Gaza early Friday to celebrate.Throughout Friday morning and early afternoon, no rockets had been fired at Israel since a ceasefire went into effect at 2 a.m, indicating an Egyptian-brokered truce between Israel and the Gaza terror groups was holding.There were also no reports of Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip.As the truce started, a frenzy of life returned to the streets of Gaza. People came out of their homes, some shouting “Allahu Akbar” or whistling from balconies. Many fired in the air, celebrating the end of the fighting.“This is the euphoria of victory,” said Khalil al-Hayya, a senior Hamas figure, in front of a crowd of thousands of Palestinians who had gathered in the streets to celebrate.Thousands also gathered Friday morning in the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis outside the family house of Deif, the shadowy commander of the Hamas military wing, the  Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, who had ordered the rocket attacks. Supporters shouted “victory” and waved green Hamas flags.Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya flashes the V-sign for victory as people take to the streets to celebrate the ceasefire between Israel and the two main Palestinian terror groups in the Gaza Strip, in Gaza City on May 21, 2021. (MOHAMMED ABED / AFP)-Ali Barakeh, an official with Islamic Jihad, a smaller terror group that fought alongside Hamas, said Israel’s declaration of a truce was a defeat for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and “a victory to the Palestinian people.”Palestinians also came out into the streets in West Bank towns and in East Jerusalem, with some setting off fireworks in celebration.In the Arab Israeli town of Umm el-Fahm, a convoy of cars drove through the streets, honking their horns and waving Palestinian flags.Hamas and other Gaza terror groups launched over 4,000 projectiles at Israel since May 10, at times forcing people living near Gaza into bomb shelters around the clock. Israel, in response, carried out an extensive bombing campaign in the Gaza Strip.Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry says 232 people, including more than 66 minors, have been killed by Israeli strikes over the past 10 days. According to the IDF, more than 120 of those killed were members of Hamas and over 25 were members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad as of Monday night. The IDF also says some of the Gaza civilian fatalities were killed by the terror groups’ own rockets falling short and exploding in Gaza.Twelve people in Israel, including a 5-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, were killed in rocket fire, and hundreds were injured.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

ADL: ‘Dangerous and drastic surge’ in antisemitism in US linked to Gaza violence-Recent days have seen a series of assaults against Jews in Los Angeles and New York and a large uptick in anti-Jewish activities online and on social media.By Jacob Magid and JTA-may 21,21-Today, 7:34 pm

There has been a “dangerous and drastic surge” in antisemitism in the US, and around the world, in recent days linked to the fighting between Israel and terror groups in the Gaza Strip, the Anti-Defamation League said.In preliminary data revealed late Thursday, just before a ceasefire went into effect, the watchdog group said it had tracked an increase in online and real-world incidents of antisemitism in the United States.“As the violence between Israel and Hamas continues to escalate, we are witnessing a dangerous and drastic surge in anti-Jewish hate right here at home,” says ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt.“It’s happening around the world— from London to Los Angeles, from France to Florida, in big cities like New York and in small towns, and across every social media platform.”The ADL said it has documented antisemitism on Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and Instagram, with messages including explicit praise for Hitler, promoting tropes about Jewish control and demonizing all Jews.The group said extreme antisemitic and anti-Zionist content can be found across a wide variety of channels calling for the destruction of the Jewish state, including posts that state: “GAS THE KIKES RACE WAR NOW-The ADL says it found more than 17,000 tweets using variations of the phrase, “Hitler was right” between May 7 and May 14, 2021.The group said some of the pro-Palestinian protests in recent weeks featured signs invoking age-old antisemitic accusation that Jews are responsible for killing Jesus as well as Holocaust analogies demonizing Zionists.The ADL says it has also received more reports of possible antisemitic incidents since the conflict broke out in Israel, with 193 reports in the week after the crisis began, up from 131 the previous week.A group of about 20 pro-Palestinian demonstrators chanted “Intifada!” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” across the street from the Temple Beth Israel synagogue in Skokie, Ilinois, the ADL said.In the two most high-profile incidents, Jews were attacked in Los Angeles and in New York by mobs of anti-Israel protesters.In Los Angeles, groups of pro-Palestinian protesters attacked Jews in two separate incidents in Los Angeles this week.Authorities are investigating one of the incidents as a possible hate crime.In an altercation Tuesday night recorded on video, a group of men waving Palestinian flags attacked diners at a sushi restaurant in the neighborhood of Beverly Grove, throwing punches, bottles and other objects. The diners included a group of Jewish men.Another man at the scene, who was not Jewish, told the local CBS affiliate that he and his group also were attacked and that he was pepper-sprayed when he tried to defend the group. He added that the attackers used antisemitic language to determine who at the restaurant was Jewish.Shocking videos from Los Angeles where Palestinians started attacking JewsWitnesses said 10 Palestinian cars rolled up and started hitting them with knives at a Sushi restaurant in Beverly Hills#israelunderfire pic.twitter.com/i1Au9sOEIh — Adam Milstein (@AdamMilstein) May 19, 2021-In an incident Monday night recorded by a security camera, an Orthodox Jewish man was chased by a caravan of Palestinian supporters. He escaped unharmed.Similar scenes were reported from New York on Thursday.In one attack, one person was burned when two fireworks were thrown from a car amid an altercation with anti-Zionist protesters in a heavily Jewish New York City business district, according to police.The fight in New York City occurred around the same time as a pro-Israel demonstration on Thursday in New York City that also attracted pro-Palestinian counter-protesters. It took place in the Diamond District, a midtown Manhattan street with many Jewish-owned businesses.In two videos posted to Twitter on Thursday, a group of men wearing the colors of the Palestinian flag can be seen yelling “f–king Zionist” and similar expletives while holding a Palestinian flag. None. We will bring the perpetrators of this vicious act of hate to justice.”Later Friday, police said they had arrested one man for hate crimes.“UPDATE-23-year-old Waseem Awawdeh was arrested for using a crutch to assault a man in front of 1604 Broadway,” NYPD Hate Crimes Division tweeted. “He’s been charged with hate crime assault 2, gang assault 2, menacing, and criminal possession of a weapon.”The Israeli Consulate in New York on Friday said the wave of protests was more violent than previously seen in the area, even when tensions were high.“The demonstrations are larger, more toxic, and unfortunately also more violent. There is a direct connection between Hamas’ stated agenda which is sworn to Israel’s destruction and the slogans of the demonstrators that undermine the legitimacy of Israel as the Jewish nation-state,” the consulate said in a statement.

Analysis-in the north, Hezbollah and its missiles loom large over Gaza battle-Both Israel and the Lebanese terror group have good reason to prevent the fighting spreading to a second front, even though both believe another round of conflict is inevitable-By AP-may 21,21-Today, 7:05 pm

BEIRUT — Ever since their last war in 2006, Israel and Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah terror group have constantly warned that a new round between them is inevitable. Yet once again, a potential trigger has gone unpulled.Hezbollah’s shadow loomed large during Israel and Hamas’s two-week battle, with the possibility it could unleash its arsenal of missiles — far more powerful than Hamas’s — in support of the Palestinians.Instead, Hezbollah stayed on the sidelines. And if a ceasefire that took effect early Friday holds, another Israel-Hamas war will have ended without Hezbollah intervention.For now, both sides had compelling reasons not to clash, including — for Hezbollah — the bitter memory of Israel’s punishing 2006 bombing campaign that turned its strongholds in Lebanon to rubble. Lebanon is also in the grips of an economic and financial collapse unparalleled in its modern history and can ill afford another massive confrontation with Israel.For Israel, the Iranian-backed group in Lebanon remains its toughest and most immediate security challenge.“Israel needs to manage the conflict in Gaza with a very open eye toward what is happening in the north, because the north is a much more important arena than Gaza,” said Amos Yadlin, a former Israeli military intelligence chief who currently heads the Institute for National Security Studies. He spoke before the truce took effect at 2 a.m. Friday.In this April 20, 2017 file photo, a Hezbollah fighter holds an Iranian-made anti-aircraft missile, right, as he takes his position with his comrade, left, between orange trees, at the coastal border town of Naqoura, south Lebanon. (AP Photo/Hussein Malla, File)-Hezbollah’s reaction during the 11 days of Israeli bombardment that engulfed Gaza in death and destruction was relatively mute. Its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, did not make any public comments, even after a Hezbollah fighter was shot dead by Israeli soldiers at the border during a protest last week.Late Thursday, Netanyahu’s security cabinet approved a unilateral ceasefire to halt the Gaza operation, a decision that came after heavy US pressure to stop the offensive. Hamas quickly followed suit and said it would honor the deal.Throughout the current round of fighting, Hezbollah’s show of solidarity — including unclaimed rocket barrages from south Lebanon into Israel on three separate occasions in the past week — appeared carefully calibrated for limited impact. Most landed in open areas or in the Mediterranean Sea. The rockets are believed to have been fired by Palestinian factions based in south Lebanon, likely with Hezbollah’s blessing.“The political message is ‘we are here,’ and safety for Israel from its northern border is not to be taken for granted and neither is the deterrent that was established in 2006” when the two sides fought each other to a draw, said Joyce Karam, an adjunct professor of political science at George Washington University.At the tense Lebanon-Israel border, Hezbollah supporters wearing yellow hats organized daily protests over the past week. On at least one occasion, dozens of people breached the fence and crossed to the other side, drawing Israeli shots that struck and killed a 21-year-old. He was later identified as a Hezbollah fighter, and given a full-fledged funeral with hundreds in attendance.Analysts said the chances of Hezbollah joining in the fighting with Israel were low, particularly given the political and economic implosion happening in Beirut and the array of challenges the group faces internally with social tensions on the rise. Even among Hezbollah’s supporters, there is no appetite for a confrontation as Lebanese suffer under an economic crash that has driven half of the population into povert.Also, Hezbollah’s patron Iran is engaged in nuclear talks with the West, with growing hopes an agreement might be reached. Tehran has also been holding talks with longtime regional rival, Saudi Arabia, signaling a possible de-escalation following years of animosity that often spilled into neighboring countries.“Hezbollah so far doesn’t seem inclined to spoil Iran’s talks with world powers on the nuclear front because it wants to see sanctions relief for its primary political, military and financial backer,” said Karam, who covers Mideast politics for the regional newspaper The National.Speaking at a rally in south Beirut on Monday, senior Hezbollah official Hashem Safieddine bragged about the group’s firepower, which he said has multiplied many times since the 2006 war, but suggested the time has not come for Hezbollah to get involved.In this May 15, 2021 file photo, Hezbollah fighters attend the funeral procession of their comrade Mohammed Tahhan who was shot dead on Friday by Israeli forces along the Lebanon-Israel border, in the southern village of Adloun, Lebanon. (AP Photo/Mohammed Zaatari, File)“We in Hezbollah look to the day where we will fight together, with you, side by side and shoulder to shoulder, on all fronts to extract this cancerous cell,” he said, addressing Palestinians and referring to Israel’s presence in the Arab world. “This day is coming, it’s inevitable.”Hezbollah has grown considerably more powerful in the last decade and amassed a formidable army with valuable battlefield experience backing the forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad in the neighboring country’s civil war, Israeli defense officials say.During the inconclusive, monthlong 2006 war, the group launched some 4,000 rockets into Israel — as many as Hamas and other Palestinian groups fired at Israel during the current round of fighting — most of them unguided projectiles with limited range. Today, Israeli officials say Hezbollah possesses some 130,000 rockets and missiles capable of striking virtually anywhere in Israel.Yadlin, the former Israeli military intelligence chief, said all intelligence assessments, however, indicate that Hezbollah does not want a full-on conflict with Israel.“Nasrallah is in the position that he doesn’t want to repeat the mistake of 2006. He knows he won’t be the defender of Lebanon, he will be the destroyer of Lebanon,” said Yadlin. “He had a lot of opportunities and he hasn’t taken them.” He was referring to Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah assets in Syria for which the group vowed to retaliate but still has not.Qassim Qassir, an analyst and expert on Hezbollah affairs in Lebanon, concurred that there seemed to be no intention to open the Lebanese southern front because it would “lead to an all-out war with consequences no one can predict.”For now, both Israel and Hezbollah consider the deterrence established following the 2006 war to be holding, with Hezbollah threatening to strike deeper than ever inside Israel, including at its nuclear facilities, and Israel vowing to target civilian infrastructure, inflicting massive damage.Karam said both Hezbollah and Israel have been saying since 2006 that round two is inevitable, but its cost has only gone up for both sides. For the moment, both seem satisfied with keeping their tensions on Syrian territory rather than having another war in Lebanon.But each day brings closer the possibility of an unwanted conflict coming to bear.“For now, this paradigm seems to hold,” she said.Times of Israel Staff contributed to this report.

Jordanians rally to celebrate ‘victory of the resistance’ against Israel-Thousands in country at peace with Jewish state gather at border, chant ‘Death to Israel’ and ‘Let’s trade the olive branch for the gun’-By Agencies-MAY 22,21-Today, 2:22 am

AMMAN — Thousands of people demonstrated on Friday in Jordan to celebrate the “victory of the resistance” against Israel, after a ceasefire between the Jewish state and Palestinian terror groups in Gaza.Responding to a call by the Muslim Brotherhood, some 10,000 people gathered in the Sweimeh region near the border with the West Bank.Demonstrators carried banners reading: “Jerusalem is the symbol of victory,” “Congratulations on the victory of the resistance” and “The resilience of Gaza led to victory.”A ceasefire was announced on Thursday between Israel and Palestinian groups, including Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, after 11 days of deadly fighting in the worst hostilities between the two sides in years.Israeli security forces have clashed with Palestinian protesters in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and there has also been violence between Jews and Arab Israelis in mixed cities within Israel.Throughout the fighting, demonstrations were held almost daily in Jordan in solidarity with the Palestinians.Around half of Jordan’s 10 million-strong population is of Palestinian origin, including some 2.2 million refugees registered with the United Nations.Demonstrators on Friday carried Jordanian and Palestinian flags and chanted “Death to Israel” and “Let’s trade the olive branch for the gun.”Jordan signed a peace deal with Israel in 1994.In Karameh, an area near the West Bank border, another few thousand demonstrators, many of them youths dressed in Jordanian and Palestinian keffiyeh scarves, burned Israeli flags and chanted slogans against the peace deal.Karameh is the site of a 1968 battle — fought a few months after the defeat of Arab states by Israel in 1967 — between a combined force of Palestinian fighters and Jordanian army soldiers against Israeli troops, and is symbolic across the Arab world.In the capital, over 1,000 protesters set off on a march from the Al-Husseini Grand Mosque in central Amman after Friday prayers.They demanded the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador and the closure of the Jewish state’s embassy.On Monday, Jordanian lawmakers unanimously called on the government to expel the Israeli ambassador in Amman and recall the Jordanian ambassador from Tel Aviv.

Hours after Gaza ceasefire, Palestinians, police clash on Temple Mount-According to Israeli police, Palestinians hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at officers; Palestinians say at least 20 injured; pro-Hamas protests in West Bank-By Aaron Boxerman    21 May 2021, 4:55 pm

Palestinians clashed with Israeli police on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount on Friday afternoon, mere hours after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect.It was not immediately clear how the confrontation had erupted. According to Israeli police, officers acted to contain a riot by Palestinian worshippers at the scene.“Immediately after the noon prayer, a riot broke out on the Temple Mount by hundreds of young people that included throwing stones and throwing a Molotov cocktail at the forces,” Israel Police said in a statement.The clashes marked the first test of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. (AHMAD GHARABLI / AFP)-Tens of thousands of Palestinians gathered at the flashpoint site for Friday prayers just after noon. After finishing, thousands chanted slogans and hoisted Palestinian flags.In videos from the courtyard surrounding the Al-Aqsa Mosque several minutes later, police can be seen firing stun grenades at Palestinians as they attempt to clear the square. More than a dozen Palestinians were detained on the scene.In another video from the scene, an Israeli cop is attacked by a Palestinian man who knocks him violently to the ground as Palestinians around him cheer.Some Palestinian reports claimed the unrest was sparked when Israeli police sought to confiscate the Palestinian flags being waved by worshippers.Twenty Palestinians were injured and two were hospitalized, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said.Palestinian terror groups have tied rocket fire from Gaza — which ceased early on Friday morning as the ceasefire took effect — to unrest in Jerusalem connected to both prayer on the Temple Mount during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, as well as the pending eviction of a number of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.In an attempt to avoid further confrontations, Israeli authorities have banned access by Jewish visitors to the Temple Mount for the time being. Many Palestinians view the visits as a provocation, while Jews say they are exercising their right to visit Judaism’s most holy place, even though Israel does not allow Jews to pray there.Israeli politicians have said the ceasefire was unconditional, with “calm in exchange for calm.” Hamas said that it demanded Israeli concessions at the Temple Mount in exchange for the truce.Palestinians across the West Bank and Gaza celebrated the ostensible Hamas success in the conflict on Friday afternoon, holding large marches in major Palestinian cities.“Fatah, Hamas, independents — everyone is happy. Hussein’s role is sponsored by the Palestinian Authority, which is led by Hamas’s main rival, Fatah.

France circulates draft UN Security Council resolution urging Gaza ceasefire-Elysee Palace says core text stresses end to shooting and involvement of United Nation’s top-level forum; resolution would require formal US veto if Washington opposes-By Jacob Magid-MAY9,21-Today, 9:08 am

NEW YORK — The French mission to the United Nations circulated a draft resolution to members of the Security Council on Tuesday that calls for a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza terror groups, as countries on the top UN body continued their efforts to weigh in on the ongoing violence despite US objections.French President Emmanuel Macron’s office publicly announced the matter following a trilateral meeting with Egyptian counterpart Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who is currently visiting Paris, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II, who joined via video conference.“The three countries agreed on three simple elements: The shooting must stop, the time has come for a ceasefire and the UN Security Council must take up the issue,” the Elysee Palace said in a statement.In addition to demanding an immediate end to the violence, the core of the resolution’s text stresses the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to Gaza, a Security Council diplomat told The Times of Israel.Axios reported that the French move surprised the US mission, which has three times in the past week blocked joint statements with similar messaging, insisting that such measures would not help advance a ceasefire and that it wanted time for its own efforts to play out.A Security Council resolution carries more weight than a joint statement, and blocking one backed by every other member would require the US to issue a veto — something it likely wants to avoid as Biden has vowed to take a more multilateral approach to diplomacy and improve ties with longtime allies that were damaged by his predecessor Donald Trump.French President Emanuel Macron, left, welcomes Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi before attending a video conference with Jordan’s King Abdullah II to work on a concrete proposal for a ceasefire and a possible path to discussions between Israel and the Gaza Strip terror groups, at the Elysee Palace in Paris, May 18, 2021. (Sarah Meyssonnier/Pool via AP)-While Biden “expressed his support for a ceasefire” during a phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a source familiar with the matter said no deadline was demanded from the Israeli premier for when IDF operations in Gaza must conclude. However, the president did warn that he would not be able to hold off pressure from within his party and in the international community for an immediate ceasefire for much longer and urged Netanyahu to bring the fighting to a close.The French resolution includes rhetoric and messaging similar to what has been heard from Biden on the matter in recent days in an effort to make it more difficult for the US to explain why it won’t back the measure, the Security Council diplomat said.The original draft of the statement does not make mention of Hamas rocket fire but the diplomat said such amendments could be added by other members in the coming days.“The strategy is to convince all parties, so the text should be very focused and acceptable to everyone,” the diplomat said, adding that a date for when the resolution will be brought before the Security Council has not yet been set. “We will try to move as soon as possible,” the diplomat said.“The issue is concerning for everyone, and members cannot be silent on the issue,” the diplomat said, noting that Biden himself has backed a ceasefire and that the US should therefore be comfortable getting behind the measure.Israel has opposed such efforts, and its Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan on Sunday urged members to “unequivocally condemn Hamas,” rather than call on both sides to exercise restraint. The Israeli mission asked the US to oppose the joint statements introduced over the past week.Macron had on Monday underlined the importance of Egyptian mediation after talks in Paris with Sissi.China’s UN Ambassador Zhang Jun said that during a closed-door meeting, members “heard the proposal made by our French colleague in the Council and for China, definitely, we are supportive to all effort facilitating the ending of the crisis and the coming back of peace in the Middle East.”The UN Security Council had held an emergency meeting earlier Tuesday on the situation in Gaza that ended without any result, four diplomats involved told The Times of Israel.The closed-door session was the fourth in nine days held by the top UN body and came a day after the US blocked a joint statement calling for a ceasefire for the third consecutive time.While the Norwegian, Chinese and Tunisian missions that initiated Tuesday’s meeting did so to increase international pressure for a ceasefire, two Security Council diplomats told The Times of Israel they weren’t really sure why another consultation was held, given that member states knew the US position had not moved in the previous 24 hours.Norway’s UN mission has continued to call for the council to “speak with one voice” on the escalation in Gaza, but with the US insistent on pursuing its own avenues in order to bring about a ceasefire, the top UN body has been placed in a “wait and see mode” for the time being, one diplomat said.On Thursday, the UN General Assembly will be meeting for the first time on the same topic and a majority of countries are expected to voice solidarity with the Palestinians, call for a ceasefire and criticize Israel. There is not yet an expectation that the meeting will include an effort to pass a resolution on the matter, diplomats said.Palestinian terror groups have fired thousands of rockets at Israel since last Monday, drawing heavy retaliatory Israeli airstrikes.Twelve people in Israel, including a 5-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, have been killed in the rocket fire from Gaza, and hundreds have been injured.According to Gaza’s Hamas-run Health Ministry, at least 212 Palestinians have been killed so far in the nine days of the conflict, including more than 60 children. It was not immediately clear if this ministry tally included all of those killed or if there were Hamas operatives not included in the count. According to the IDF, more than 120 of those killed were members of Hamas and over 25 were members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad as of Monday night.Agencies and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

The targets included weapons storage sites and a command center.He estimates that at least 10 members of terror groups Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad were killed.He says the strikes were concentrated in Khan Younis and Rafah in the southern Strip, from where most of the rockets have been launched at Israeli cities.Regarding Hamas’s claim that it has been targeting Air Force bases, Zilberman says: “They’re trying, but not hitting.”

Hamas says it targeted air force bases in barrages toward south, central Israel-IDF says no hits reported in airfields; Israeli border towns see 3-hour overnight lull between attacks, Israeli jets hit dozens of targets in Gaza as fighting enters 10th day-By Judah Ari Gross and TOI staff-MAY 19,21-Today, 6:37 am

Gaza terror groups fired several rocket barrages at southern and central Israel late Tuesday and early Wednesday, with Hamas claiming it targeted Israeli Air Force bases during the strikes.Red alert sirens went off throughout Gaza border towns, in the southern coastal cities of Ashdod and Ashkelon and in central towns as far north as Rehovot and Palmachim and in a number of air bases in between.“The bases that the Al Qassam Brigades targeted are Hatzor, Hatzerim, Nevatim, Tel Nof, Palmachim, and Ramon,” Hamas said in a statement.Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson Hidai Zilberman on Wednesday morning said the military had no indications that a rocket struck any of its air bases. In one case, a projectile landed in an open field well outside the Tel Nof base near Rehovot, he said.Hamas’s publicly announced attack on airbases potentially indicated an effort by the group to deflect criticism from the US and other world leaders for wantonly targeting Israeli civilian populations in clear violation of international law. However, Hamas rockets fired during this alleged attack on Israeli airbases also struck civilian areas and the terror group launched projectiles toward towns overnight where no IAF bases are located. According to Zilberman, rockets have been fired toward IAF bases throughout the operation.There were no reports of damage or injuries from the rocket fire that began at around 8 p.m. and continued past 2 a.m., with many of the projectiles being intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system. Gaza border towns had a three-hour respite from rocket fire from 2:30 to 5:30 a.m., as has been the norm for that overnight period during the past several days.According to the IDF, over the course of Tuesday night and Wednesday morning some 50 rockets were fired toward Israel from Gaza, with 10 of them failing to clear the border and landing inside the Palestinian enclave. No injuries or damage was reported in the overnight attacks, indicating that the remaining 40 projectiles were either intercepted by the Iron Dome or struck open areas.But on the other side of the Gaza border, IDF jets operated the entire night, striking dozens of targets throughout the Strip, according to the Hamas-affiliated Palestinian Media Center, which published pictures and footage of the bombing.The news outlet said several Palestinians were killed and a larger number were injured, though the Gaza health ministry did not immediately provide an update with exact figures. According to Zilberman, the IDF believes it killed at least 10 members of the Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror groups in its overnight strikes in the cities of Khan Younis and Rafah in southern Gaza.In one round of strikes on Tuesday night, more than 50 Israeli Air Force jets using over 120 bombs struck an underground tunnel network in southern Gaza, destroying some 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) of it over the course of 25 minutes, according to the IDF spokesman.It was the fifth round of airstrikes that the IDF has carried out against Hamas’s sprawling subterranean complex, which Israel refers to as “the metro.” This included strikes on a network of tunnels in Rafah used by Hamas in the 2014 Gaza war to kidnap the remains of IDF soldier Hadar Goldin, who was killed in an ambush on August 1, during what was meant to be a ceasefire, which Hamas violated.The IDF said it also struck a number of targets in the upscale Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City overnight Tuesday-Wednesday, an area where many top Hamas commanders live.The Israeli military late Tuesday said its strikes targeted six rocket launching sites as well as a Hamas terror cell firing mortars at Israel from inside a school in Gaza.The incident “proves again how the Hamas terror group purposefully places its military assets in the heart of the civilian population,” the army said.Meanwhile, various international actors continued in their efforts to reach a ceasefire.A UN Security Council meeting broke up earlier Tuesday without issuing a statement, but France then said it had proposed a more forceful resolution calling for a ceasefire, in coordination with Israel’s neighbors Egypt and Jordan.If introduced, it would force the Biden administration to issue its first Security Council veto if it wants to continue blocking such efforts in the top UN body.While Channel 12 reported that an Egyptian ceasefire initiative had borne fruit and was slated to go into effect on Thursday morning, officials on all sides issued subsequent denials.A diplomatic source familiar with Egypt’s efforts told The Times of Israel that negotiations were still ongoing and no such agreement had been reached.But the Haaretz daily on Tuesday night quoted an Israeli official who said that barring any last-minute surprises, a ceasefire would indeed likely be reached by Thursday morning.While US President Joe Biden “expressed his support for a ceasefire” during a phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, a source familiar with the matter said no deadline was demanded from the Israeli premier for when IDF operations in Gaza must conclude. However, the president did warn that he would not be able to hold off much longer pressure from within his party and in the international community for an immediate ceasefire and urged Netanyahu to bring the fighting to a close.Hamas has launched nearly 3,700 rockets at Israel since May 10, often forcing people living by Gaza into bomb shelters around the clock.Israel’s near-relentless bombing campaign in response has sent fireballs, debris and black smoke into the sky, leaving two million Palestinians in Gaza desperate for reprieve.The humanitarian crisis has deepened in the impoverished strip, with the UN saying 72,000 Palestinians have been displaced.Palestinians across the West Bank and in Israeli-annexed East Jerusalem mobilized Tuesday for protests and a general strike that shuttered non-essential businesses, in support of those under bombardment in Gaza.As the sides entered their 10th day of fighting on Wednesday, Gaza’s Hamas-run Health Ministry updated the death toll in the Strip to 217, including more than 63 children. It was not immediately clear if the ministry tally included all of those killed or if there were Hamas operatives not included in the count.According to the IDF, more than 120 of those killed were members of Hamas and over 25 were members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad as of Monday night.The Hamas-run ministry said that over 1,400 Gazans had been injured since the start of what the IDF has billed Operation Guardian of the Walls.Twelve people in Israel, including a 5-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, have been killed in rocket fire, and hundreds have been injured over the past ten days.The most recent casualties came on Tuesday afternoon when two Thai workers were killed in a packing house that took a direct hit from Hamas mortar fire. The two men in their 30s were not immediately named. Eight others were inured, including one seriously, in the attack on a community close to the border.The foreign nationals were working in an area without proper fortifications, local government officials said.The deadly attack came shortly after the Israel Defense Forces said that a soldier was lightly wounded in a mortar attack while assisting in the transfer of humanitarian aid shipments into the Gaza Strip through the Erez Crossing.The injured 19-year-old was taken to Ashkelon’s Barzilai Medical Center for treatment for shrapnel wounds to his torso. Medics said he was fully conscious.Additionally, a rocket landed near a vehicle, lightly injuring one person near the southern city of Beersheba, the Magen David Adom emergency said.Rockets were also fired at the southern cities of Ashkelon and Kiryat Gat as well as border communities throughout the day. One of the rockets slammed into a house in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council, which was empty at the time.Israeli aircraft carried out strikes on targets in the Gaza Strip in response, with the IDF announcing it had hit the homes of 12 Hamas commanders in Gaza over the past day, including three on Tuesday. There were no immediate reports of injuries.Additionally, the IDF said it hit a Hamas cell in Khan Younis that was involved in firing anti-tank missiles. The military said the strike prevented anti-tank missile fire at Israel. The army also said it bombed a group of Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists who were preparing to fire a rocket at Israel.Another airstrike targeted a storage site where equipment and machines for manufacturing Hamas weapons were kept, the IDF said.Jacob Magid, Judah Ari Gross and AFP contributed to this report

In Jaffa, Arab fears of eviction stoke tensions with the Jews next door-‘They want to throw us out of our home,’ says one woman whose husband and brother recently assaulted a rabbi looking into real estate-By Agencies and TOI staff-MAY 19,21-Today, 4:41 am

Arab-Israeli supermarket cashier Israa Jarbou has missed a week of work for fear of getting attacked by Jews on the bus out of Jaffa, a mixed Arab-Jewish quarter of Tel Aviv.“They’ll see I’m religious,” said the 27-year-old, who wears the Muslim hijab head covering. “There is no security.”Living nearby, Jewish seminary student David Shvets, 24, voiced similar fears, saying local Arabs had pelted him with stones and that a nearby synagogue was torched.“We now go in a large group with a police escort to get home at night… in the heart of the state of Israel!” he said incredulously, describing the situation as a “jungle.”Hostility has gripped usually quiet mixed communities of Israeli Jews and Arabs since the start of a military escalation a week ago pitting Israel’s army against the terror group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.Jewish students study religion at the Shirat Moshe Yeshiva in Jaffa, south of Tel Aviv, on April 30, 2021. (AHMAD GHARABLI / AFP)-The most intense fighting since 2014 was sparked by unrest in Jerusalem, following clashes between police and stone-throwing Palestinians on the Temple Mount compound. Hamas last Monday fired rockets at Jerusalem, drawing retaliatory Israeli airstrikes and escalating the hostilities into a full-blown conflict.Violence has flared nationwide between Jews and Arabs, a 20 percent minority. Synagogues, mosques, graveyards, a theatre and restaurants have been targeted, and a Jewish man has died after being hit with a brick while driving in Lod.Now, in the Mediterranean seaside community of Jaffa, with its trendy bars and hummus restaurants, mounted police enforce nightly road closures, and officers with assault rifles patrol sidewalks.A 12-year-old Muslim boy was hospitalized after a firebomb was thrown into his home, an attack that led to the arrest of a 20-year-old Arab resident of the city on Monday. The firebombing in Jaffa was allegedly committed by Arab Israelis, in an apparent case of “mistaken identity,” an unnamed police official told Walla.Fearful Muslim neighbors have been quick to take down their Ramadan decorations.The root causes for the latest spasm of violence go back decades. In Jaffa, an assault last month gave an early warning of long-simmering tensions over land and property rights.Israa Jarbou shares a cramped public housing apartment with nine others including her husband, their two children and her mother-in-law Etaf, 57.Outside, where their chickens roam, they have seen vast changes in recent years. Low-income Arab neighbors are getting evicted as the housing blocks give way to luxury apartments that mostly Israeli Jews can afford.The Jarbous, too, face an eviction threat from the state public housing company Amidar, which ordered them to move out in 2018, citing unpaid rent.Lawyer Saar Amit told AFP he got that eviction canceled and has requested the company allow the family to stay, or to pay reduced rent in another, citing Etaf Jarbou’s poor health and meager income. Amidar has not yet replied.In mid-April, when two men from the nearby Jewish seminary came to her street inspecting land for possible purchase, tensions spiraled into a violent altercation.Israa Jarbou’s husband Mahmoud, 34, and his brother Ahmad, 36, assaulted the two.The melee was caught on tape, leading to the Jarbou brothers’ arrest.“They want to throw us out of our home,” said Etaf Jarbou, who claims the two Jewish men came to her house. “And then they say there’s violence. But they’re committing violence against us.”Moshe Schendowich, head of the Meirim Beyafo seminary, said he and the seminary’s rabbi were inspecting property for building student housing when the two men slapped, beat and kicked them.“There’s no legitimacy for any type of violence, and this violence was extreme,” Schendowich said.He said his partially state-funded organization aims to “strengthen” Jaffa’s Jewish community.He and the rabbi, Eliyahu Mali, are affiliated with Israel’s West Bank settlement movement.Jaffa, Schendowich said, “is not by definition an Arab city.“There’s definitely an Arab population here, and the Arab population here is welcome, but the Jewish community here is a thriving Jewish community.”Arabs’ grievances in Jaffa, as elsewhere, stem from Israel’s founding in 1948, said local filmmaker Tony Copti.“For Arab Palestinians it was the capital of education, of theater, of cinema, schools and newspapers,” he said. “It was a country unto itself.”When Israel declared independence that year according to the UN partition plan of Mandatory Palestine, local Arabs and several neighboring states rejected the UN plan and attacked, leading to the Israeli War of Independence-Of the more than 70,000 Arab residents in Jaffa then, all but 3,000 fled or were expelled, according to Zochrot, an Israeli group that documents Palestinian communities erased at Israel’s founding.In Jaffa, the state seized Arabs’ homes, subdivided them and assigned apartments to impoverished Jewish and Arab residents, who paid a symbolic low rent as “protected tenants.”But change came in the 1980s, when Amidar began selling its properties across Israel, offering protected tenants a chance to buy their homes at a discount.About 800 Amidar apartments in Jaffa are saleable, Amidar spokeswoman Shani Israeli told AFP.“The goal is to sell to the resident and, if the resident doesn’t want to, then onward,” she said.Amir Badran, a Jaffa native and a member of Tel Aviv’s city council, said most Amidar tenants in Jaffa today are Arab, and more than a third face an eviction threat.Amidar “ignores the fact that these properties are originally Palestinian… and ignores the fact that Arabs cannot afford to buy these properties,” he said.Etaf Jarbou said she gets along with most of her Jewish neighbors.Arabs in Jaffa typically speak Arabic peppered with Hebrew, and often study and work in Jewish Israeli society.Many are at pains to restore harmony. Hundreds of Jaffa residents, Arab and Jewish, on Sunday protested Israeli policy and called for peaceful coexistence.Some held olive branches, even as others aired grievances.“Arabs of Israel, for the last three Gaza wars we didn’t do anything,” said Muhammad Mansour, 34, an Arab Israeli engineer at the demonstration.“But now with the discrimination, we’ve had it up to here. It’s not only about Al-Aqsa.”The local battle over housing has cemented solidarity with Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem, he indicated.Etaf Jarbou highlighted a dispute in east Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, where Israeli Jews are attempting to remove Palestinians from homes built on land that courts have ruled were owned by Jewish religious associations before the establishment of Israel in 1948. The Supreme Court will consider the appeal of over 70 Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah who face eviction, with a previously scheduled hearing delayed over unrest in the capital stoked by the Sheikh Jarrah issue.“East Jerusalem breaks my heart,” she said. “And it’s not just there. It’s here. They don’t want Arabs here.”

Top general: This Gaza conflict will be a success if it brings 5 years of calm-Head of IDF Operations acknowledges Israel was caught off guard by Hamas rocket fire at Jerusalem, but says it turned the tables, setting back terror group considerably-By Judah Ari Gross-MAY 19,21-Today, 1:32 am

A top Israel Defense Forces general on Tuesday said he would consider the current round of fighting in the Gaza Strip to be a success if it ensured calm along the border for the next five years.“If you force me into a corner and ask me what is reasonable to consider a success, I would say at least five years and even more than that,” the head of IDF Operations, Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva, told the Kan public broadcaster.Haliva made his remarks as reports emerged from Egypt, Israel and Gaza late Tuesday night that a ceasefire agreement may be in the works between Israel and the Hamas terror group — which has ruled Gaza since taking it over in a coup in 2007 — potentially bringing an end to the vicious fighting between the two sides that has left at least 12 people dead in Israel and over 200 dead in Gaza.IDF officials have until now largely refrained from setting a precise goal for the current campaign, dubbed Operation Guardian of the Walls, preferring instead to say more generally that the mission is to significantly weaken Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the second most powerful terror group in the Strip.In this round of fighting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government did not seek to topple Hamas, believing that the high cost of such an operation and the potentially more dangerous chaos that may fill the vacuum left behind in its wake would make such a prospect untenable.Instead, the government believes that limiting Hamas’s capabilities and building deterrence to prevent it from conducting attacks in the short term are Israel’s best option at this time.In a candid on-air interview, Haliva acknowledged that the military did not fully anticipate Hamas’s decision to fire rockets at Jerusalem last Monday evening, believing that group would have preferred to maintain quiet ahead of the approaching Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr in order to allow residents of the Strip to celebrate in peace, rather than spark a major clash with Israel.Yet Haliva asserted that the IDF responded far more forcefully than Hamas had expected.“I think that the people who were mistaken, more than anyone else, were [Hamas’s leader in Gaza] Yahya Sinwar and [Hamas military chief] Muhammad Deif. They believed they’d be able to fire at Jerusalem and it would end with some limited kind of response from the IDF and the State of Israel. And they will look back on that decision and think of it as a significant error,” Haliva said, speaking outside IDF Headquarters in Tel Aviv.“I didn’t assess that Hamas would fire rockets at Jerusalem. But the big mistake was Hamas’s. It has paid a price for it, and will continue to pay a price for it,” he said.“At the end of the day, all of the things that Hamas built over these many years, or at least most of the things it has built over these many years, have not succeeded,” he said.Haliva appeared to refer to drones and autonomous submarines that Hamas developed in recent years and which the terror group failed to deploy in a significant way during the past nine days of fighting.On Tuesday night, initial reports from Palestinian sources emerged regarding an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire, which was said to come into effect at 6 a.m. on Thursday morning. According to Channel 12 news, Hamas had agreed to the arrangement.Israeli and Palestinian officials issued denials, and a diplomatic source familiar with Egyptian ceasefire efforts told The Times of Israel that talks were still ongoing and that no agreement had been reached.Another Israeli official, however, told the Haaretz daily on Tuesday night that barring any last-minute surprises, a ceasefire would likely be reached by Thursday morning.“There is no decisive [win] and there likely won’t be,” the official said. “Everyone is tired.”According to Channel 13, Hamas was seeking reassurances from Israel that it would not attempt to kill the terror group’s leaders during the ceasefire — a demand rejected by Israel — while Jerusalem was demanding the terror group hold its fire for several hours while it weighs the ceasefire offer, a condition rejected by Hamas.Netanyahu earlier on Tuesday said the military operation, now in its ninth day, will go on for “as long as needed to restore calm for the citizens of Israel.”Palestinian terror groups have fired over 3,500 rockets at Israel since last Monday, drawing heavy retaliatory Israeli airstrikes.Twelve people in Israel, three of them foreign nationals, have been killed in the rocket fire from Gaza, including a 5-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, and hundreds have been injured.According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, at least 213 Palestinians have been killed so far in the nine days of the conflict, including more than 60 children. It was not immediately clear if that ministry tally included all of those killed or if there were Hamas operatives not included in the count. According to the IDF, more than 120 of those killed were members of Hamas and over 25 were members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad as of Monday night.Jacob Magid contributed to this report.

Reports late Tuesday that Israel and Palestinian terror groups in the Gaza Strip will cease fire on Thursday morning sparked a flurry of denials from all parties involved, while the White House continued applying behind-the-scenes pressure on Jerusalem to wind down the fighting.Egypt has proposed an Israel-Hamas ceasefire through private channels that would take effect on Thursday at 6 a.m., Channel 12 news reported. The report cited Palestinian sources saying Hamas had agreed to the offer, while there had been no response from Israel.But it took less than an hour for denials to begin pouring in.“No agreement or specific timings for the ceasefire were reached,” Izzat al-Rishq, a member of the terror group’s leadership, said in a statement.The efforts to coordinate a ceasefire — led by the United Nations, Egypt, Qatar and other countries — are ongoing, al-Rishq said. “While emphasizing that the efforts and contacts of the mediators are serious and continuous, the demands of our people are clear and well-known.”Palestinians check the damage after an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City, on May 18, 2021. (Atia Mohammed/Flash90)-Exercising similar caution, a diplomatic source familiar with Egypt’s efforts to broker a ceasefire in the fighting, which began on Monday, May 10 with a Hamas rocket barrage at Jerusalem, told The Times of Israel that negotiations were still ongoing and no such agreement had yet been reached.Several Hebrew media outlets quoted an “Israeli official” who also poured cold water on the report.However, both Israel and Hamas have vehemently denied reports of ceasefires to end previous rounds of conflict over the years, which nevertheless went into effect shortly thereafter.The Haaretz daily on Tuesday night quoted another Israeli official who said that barring any last-minute surprises, a ceasefire would indeed likely be reached by Thursday morning.“There is no decisive [win] and there likely won’t be,” the official said. “Everyone is tired.”According to Channel 13, Hamas was seeking reassurances from Israel that it would not attempt to kill the terror group’s leaders during the ceasefire — a demand rejected by Israel — while Jerusalem was demanding the terror group hold its fire for several hours while it weighs the ceasefire offer, a condition rejected by Hamas.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier on Tuesday said the military operation, now in its ninth day, would go on “as long as needed to restore calm for the citizens of Israel.”US President Joe Biden and administration officials have encouraged Netanyahu and other top Israeli officials to end the fighting, a person with knowledge of the discussions said Tuesday.Top Biden administration officials underscored to the Israelis on Monday and Tuesday that time is not on their side in terms of international objections to nine days of Israeli airstrikes and Hamas rockets, and that it is in their interest to wind down the operations soon, according to the official, who was not authorized to comment publicly on the private talks and spoke on condition of anonymity.The White House has so far resisted international calls for ramping up public pressure on Netanyahu. It has made the calculation that Israel will not respond to international resolutions or public demands by the US, and that its greatest leverage is behind-the-scenes pressure, according to the person familiar with the administration’s discussions.The source said that the Israelis have signaled that it is possible their military campaign could end in a matter of days.This source indicated that Biden administration officials have been going further privately in their messaging to Netanyahu than previously revealed. A White House readout of a Biden call to Netanyahu on Monday, for instance, said Biden had expressed support for a ceasefire, but said nothing about the US urging Israel to bring the fighting to a close.Biden’s decision to express support for, but not explicitly demand, a ceasefire was intentional, an administration official familiar with the call said.Separately, a UN Security Council emergency meeting earlier Tuesday on the situation in Gaza ended without any result, four diplomats involved told The Times of Israel.The closed-door session was the fourth in nine days held by the top UN body and came a day after the US blocked a joint statement calling for a ceasefire for the third consecutive time.While the Norwegian, Chinese and Tunisian missions that initiated Tuesday’s meeting did so to increase international pressure for a ceasefire, two Security Council diplomats told The Times of Israel they weren’t really sure why another consultation was held, given that member states knew the US position had not moved in the previous 24 hours.Norway’s UN mission has continued to call for the council to “speak with one voice” on the escalation in Gaza, but with the US insistent on pursuing its own avenues in order to bring about a ceasefire, the top UN body has been placed in a “wait and see mode” for the time being, one diplomat said.On Thursday, the UN General Assembly will be meeting for the first time on the same topic and a majority of countries are expected to voice solidarity with the Palestinians, call for a ceasefire and criticize Israel. According to the IDF, more than 120 of those killed were members of Hamas and over 25 were members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad as of Monday night.

Hungary FM slams EU’s ‘one-sided’ statements on Israel-Peter Szijjarto urges bloc to engage in ‘less judgement, less lecturing, less criticism, less interference and more pragmatic cooperation’ By Agencies and TOI staff-18 May 2021, 11:55 pm

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjartoon Tuesday slammed the EU’s “one-sided” statements on Israel as his European counterparts called for a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians.“I have a general problem with these European statements on Israel… These are usually very much one-sided, and these statements do not help, especially not under current circumstances, when the tension is so high,” Szijjarto told AFP in an interview.EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Tuesday called for the implementation of a ceasefire to stop fighting between Israel and the Palestinians.“The priority is the immediate cessation of all violence and the implementation of a ceasefire,” Borrell said after a video conference of EU foreign ministers, adding the statement was backed by all the bloc’s member states except Hungary.Szijjarto himself did not attend the meeting. Hungary has recently used its veto power to block EU statements on China.In the interview with AFP, Szijjarto insisted that blocking decisions “is a right of every country in the European Union.“EU diplomacy should not consist only of judgements, negative statements and sanctions,” he said.“So I think less judgment, less lecturing, less criticism, less interference and more pragmatic cooperation could give back a lot of strength to the European Union.”Palestinian terror groups in Gaza have fired over 3,000 rockets at Israel since last Monday.Twelve people in Israel, including a 5-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, have been killed in the rocket fire, and hundreds have been injured.According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, at least 212 Palestinians have been killed so far in the nine days of the conflict, including more than 60 children. It was not immediately clear if this ministry tally included all of those killed or if there were Hamas operatives not included in the count.According to the IDF, more than 120 of those killed were members of Hamas and over 25 were members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad as of Monday night.

Muslim Sexual Ethics:Honor Killings, Illicit Sex, & Islamic Law

Intimate violence against women is a worldwide crisis. From “crimes of passion” to “dowry deaths,” not to mention domestic violence, many types of aggression against women occur at the hands of family members. The so-called “honor killing” of women and girls in some Muslim nations is one horrifying manifestation of this global phenomenon.These killings, which occur with shocking regularity in certain parts of the Middle East and South Asia, target women whose actions—actual or suspected—violate the honor of their families, an honor that is thought to depend on the sexual purity of its female members. Anything from speaking with an unrelated man, to rumored pre-marital loss of virginity, to an extra-marital affair can be cause for an attack, often carried out by a father or brother. In some especially tragic instances, even women and girls who have been raped are slain to remove the stain from the family honor. As with other forms of intimate violence against women, perpetrators are seldom punished.Some have viewed honor killings as a logical extension of traditional Islamic gender practices, the natural consequence of a system that enforces sex segregation through veiling and female seclusion and harshly punishes violations of these boundaries. Others have argued that honor killings are the antithesis of Islamic morality. This latter view is essentially correct from the perspective of Qur’an, prophetic traditions (hadith), and Islamic legal thought, as a careful analysis of the relevant texts shows. (Read more.) However, certain elements of traditional sexual ethics do contribute to the climate of intense scrutiny of female conduct that finds one extreme expression in honor crimes.In Qur’an, prophetic tradition, and law, one finds a very strong presumption of women’s chastity along with numerous safeguards to prevent any imputation of unchastity. Within such a context, honor killings are utterly criminal. Numerous prophetic traditions report that when asked about a husband finding his wife with another man, the Prophet agreed that the husband must procure three additional witnesses to her act before the public authority can judge her offense; otherwise he would be liable to lashing for publicly accusing her or to being killed if he killed. If a woman discovered in flagrante cannot be even publicly accused unless there are four witnesses to her act, then mere suspicion can never justify slaying a woman. Questioned by another man who claimed that his honor (ghira) would require him to immediately slay his wife’s lover in such a case, the Prophet reportedly declared that God’s honor was greater than any human’s. (Read more.) The implication is that God’s revealed procedures for dealing with illicit sex must take precedence over human ego and emotion. This does not mean, of course, that human honor is unimportant. The stress placed on safeguarding women’s reputations and punishing slander demonstrates an awareness that such accusations can have devastating consequences for those accused.From the perspective of Qur’an, prophetic traditions, and law, sex outside of a legally binding tie is considered zina, and is punishable for both women and men. Though there is a double standard in that men are, under certain circumstances, permitted to have several lawful sexual partners while women must always remain monogamous, when it comes to punishment for illicit intercourse men and women are treated exactly alike. In this sense, the traditional framework for dealing with illicit sexual behavior is balanced—unlike in the case of honor killings for actual or suspected sexual misconduct, in which only women are targets. (Read more.)-Still, while honor killings find no sanction whatsoever in Qur’an, prophetic traditions, or law, these sources cannot be absolved of all responsibility for placing a greater share of the burden of maintaining societal chastity on women. Though the Qur’an commands both men (24.30) and women (24.31) to “cast down their gazes” and to “protect their chastity,” it specifically regulates only women’s dress (Q. 24.31; 33.59). Yet it is a long stretch from these commands, which have the declared intention of protecting women from harassment (Q. 33.59), to the legal rules that allow men, especially husbands, to impose seclusion on women, forbid them from leaving the home, and limit their access even to other relatives. These rules for seclusion were never strictly observed by more than an elite minority, and are not generally enforced today. But the basic perspective they embody—that the separation of men and women is to be enforced by keeping women apart from men, and that women who violate these boundaries are suspect —remains influential.Some have suggested that the best means of combating honor killings is to insist on a strict application of traditional law, under which only the public authority is empowered to punish illicit sexual intercourse, and then only with incontrovertible proof of wrongdoing. The evidentiary requirements for conviction in cases of zina (four eyewitnesses to the actual act of penetration or confession by the offenders) ensure that punishment will virtually never be carried out. By claiming the Islamic “high ground,” such a move could be influential in shaping Muslim ideas about honor and punishment. The danger of this approach, though, is that by enshrining traditional texts as literally applicable to the contemporary world, one leaves unchallenged those elements of traditional sexual ethics that create a climate of hyper-attention to women’s bodies and behavior. So-called honor killings are indeed one extreme outgrowth of this climate. A Muslim feminist sexual ethics must help create the conditions for the Qur’anic and traditional values of modesty and chastity to be lived by Muslim women and men in ways that are faithfully chosen and equitably maintained.

YUSUFALI: A sura which We have sent down and which We have ordained in it have We sent down Clear Signs, in order that ye may receive admonition.

PICKTHAL: (Here is) a surah which We have revealed and enjoined, and wherein We have revealed plain tokens, that haply ye may take heed.

SHAKIR: (This is) a chapter which We have revealed and made obligatory and in which We have revealed clear communications that you may be mindful.

024.002

YUSUFALI: The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment.

PICKTHAL: The adulterer and the adulteress, scourge ye each one of them (with) a hundred stripes. And let not pity for the twain withhold you from obedience to Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a party of believers witness their punishment.

SHAKIR: (As for) the fornicatress and the fornicator, flog each of them, (giving) a hundred stripes, and let not pity for them detain you in the matter of obedience to Allah, if you believe in Allah and the last day, and let a party of believers witness their chastisement.

024.003

YUSUFALI: Let no man guilty of adultery or fornication marry and but a woman similarly guilty, or an Unbeliever: nor let any but such a man or an Unbeliever marry such a woman: to the Believers such a thing is forbidden.

PICKTHAL: The adulterer shall not marry save an adulteress or an idolatress, and the adulteress none shall marry save an adulterer or an idolater. All that is forbidden unto believers.

SHAKIR: The fornicator shall not marry any but a fornicatress or idolatress, and (as for) the fornicatress, none shall marry her but a fornicator or an idolater; and it is forbidden to the believers.

024.004

YUSUFALI: And those who launch a charge against chaste women, and produce not four witnesses (to support their allegations),- flog them with eighty stripes; and reject their evidence ever after: for such men are wicked transgressors;-

PICKTHAL: And those who accuse honourable women but bring not four witnesses, scourge them (with) eighty stripes and never (afterward) accept their testimony - They indeed are evil-doers -

SHAKIR: And those who accuse free women then do not bring four witnesses, flog them, (giving) eighty stripes, and do not admit any evidence from them ever; and these it is that are the transgressors,

024.005

YUSUFALI: Unless they repent thereafter and mend (their conduct); for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

PICKTHAL: Save those who afterward repent and make amends. (For such) lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

SHAKIR: Except those who repent after this and act aright, for surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

024.006

YUSUFALI: And for those who launch a charge against their spouses, and have (in support) no evidence but their own,- their solitary evidence (can be received) if they bear witness four times (with an oath) by Allah that they are solemnly telling the truth;

PICKTHAL: As for those who accuse their wives but have no witnesses except themselves; let the testimony of one of them be four testimonies, (swearing) by Allah that he is of those who speak the truth;

SHAKIR: And (as for) those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves, the evidence of one of these (should be taken) four times, bearing Allah to witness that he is most surely of the truthful ones.

024.007

YUSUFALI: And the fifth (oath) (should be) that they solemnly invoke the curse of Allah on themselves if they tell a lie.

PICKTHAL: And yet a fifth, invoking the curse of Allah on him if he is of those who lie.

SHAKIR: And the fifth (time) that the curse of Allah be on him if he is one of the liars.

024.008

YUSUFALI: But it would avert the punishment from the wife, if she bears witness four times (with an oath) By Allah, that (her husband) is telling a lie;

PICKTHAL: And it shall avert the punishment from her if she bear witness before Allah four times that the thing he saith is indeed false,

SHAKIR: And it shall avert the chastisement from her if she testify four times, bearing Allah to witness that he is most surely one of the liars;

024.009

YUSUFALI: And the fifth (oath) should be that she solemnly invokes the wrath of Allah on herself if (her accuser) is telling the truth.

PICKTHAL: And a fifth (time) that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he speaketh truth.

SHAKIR: And the fifth (time) that the wrath of Allah be on her if he is one of the truthful.

024.010

YUSUFALI: If it were not for Allah's grace and mercy on you, and that Allah is Oft-Returning, full of Wisdom,- (Ye would be ruined indeed).

PICKTHAL: And had it not been for the grace of Allah and His mercy unto you, and that Allah is Clement, Wise, (ye had been undone).

SHAKIR: And were it not for Allah's grace upon you and His mercy-- and that Allah is Oft-returning (to mercy), Wise!

YUSUFALI: Nor come nigh to adultery: for it is a shameful (deed) and an evil, opening the road (to other evils).

PICKTHAL: And come not near unto adultery. Lo! it is an abomination and an evil way.

SHAKIR: And go not nigh to fornication; surely it is an indecency and an evil way.
