The Daily Beast-Russia, China Team Up to Peddle Insane U.S. COVID Lab Theory-Julia Davis-Fri, April 9, 2021, 6:42 PM

The Cold War could be coming back with a vengeance, and the U.S.’s top adversaries are dusting off some old-school Soviet tactics.Russian and Chinese government officials have recently teamed up to publicly accuse the U.S. of creating biological weapons near their borders and suggesting that Americans are responsible for creating COVID-19.Speaking to the Russian daily newspaper Kommersant on Thursday, Nikolai Patrushev, Russia’s Security Council secretary, said: “I suggest that you pay attention to the fact that biological laboratories under U.S. control are growing by leaps and bounds all over the world. And—by a strange coincidence—mainly near the Russian and Chinese borders.”Patrushev, who formerly served as director of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB)—the main successor organization to the Soviet KGB—added that “outbreaks of diseases uncharacteristic of these regions” have been recorded in areas adjacent to these alleged bio-labs. He then openly accused the U.S. of developing biological weapons in those facilities.Like clockwork, Russian state media echoed and disseminated Patrushev’s accusations against the U.S. But this time, they were accompanied by an official statement from China’s Foreign Ministry’s spokesman, Lijian Zhao, who tweeted: “The US bio-military activities are not transparent, safe or justified. In Ukraine alone, the US has set up 16 bio-labs. Why does the US need so many labs all over the world? What activities are carried out in those labs, including the one in Fort Detrick?”Russia State Media Gears Up for a War ‘Against the West’Zhao voiced the same accusations during an official press briefing, where he identified Russia as his source on the matter. “I noticed that Russia recently asked the US again about their military and biological activities in Fort Detrick and in Ukraine,” said Zhao. “Other countries also expressed similar concerns.”The unsubstantiated allegations against the U.S. and Ukraine have come at a particularly convenient time for Putin, who has recently intensified Kremlin efforts to absorb the Donbas region. In February of this year, the Russian president ominously promised that “[The Kremlin] will never turn [its] back on Donbas, no matter what."Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of the Kremlin-funded RT and Sputnik, doubled down on promoting Russia’s takeover of Eastern Ukraine, with repeated urges for “Mother Russia” to “take Donbas home.” By presenting Ukraine as a national security threat to Russia, and alleging its involvement in the manufacturing of deadly bio-weapons, the Kremlin is able further justify its increasingly aggressive posture towards its highly coveted neighboring territory-Just as Trump had aided an outbreak of violence against Asian-Americans by calling COVID-19 the “China virus” and spreading unsubstantiated claims that the virus was made in a Wuhan lab, opponents of the U.S. have strived to cultivate that type of hostility against America on a global scale. Both Russia and China stand to benefit from pinning the blame for the pandemic on the U.S., and if Ukraine can be theoretically implicated, too—all the better for the Kremlin. It’s not the first time Russia claims that the U.S. is creating and disseminating deadly diseases around the world. In 1992, Russia perpetuated a KGB disinformation campaign that falsely alleged that the virus that caused AIDS was the product of biological weapons experiments conducted by the U.S. During the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic in West Africa, Russian propaganda outlets spread conspiracy theories that the virus had been created by the U.S. in collaboration with Great Britain and South Africa. There is another common denominator to these disinformation tactics: In addition to accusing the U.S. of engaging in worldwide biological warfare, the Kremlin is simultaneously positioning itself as a lone savior.“[Russia] saved Africa from Ebola,” Olga Skabeeva of Russia’s state-TV’s 60 Minutes proudly declared last month. While attempting to discredit COVID-19 vaccines created by Western countries, Russian state media outlets have frequently praised “Sputnik V” as the world’s best coronavirus vaccine, even as troubling information about the Russian-made vaccine continues to emerge. To overcome the suspension of disbelief and promote the idea that the U.S. is capable of the worst kind of abuses against humanity, Russian propagandists are now resorting to an all-too-familiar dehumanization tactic: painting America as a super-villain.“[Americans] don’t even have the word “soulfulness” in the English language,” RT’s Margarita Simonyan recently proclaimed on Russian television. “We’re soulful. They’re not like us.”

Israeli children’s doctors to issue call to vaccinate under 16’s-Israeli Pediatric Association waiting for regulators to approve shot for those aged 12-15, arguing it is safe and effective; Pfizer has asked for US authorization-By TOI staff and AFP-APR 11,21-Today, 5:06 am

The Israeli Pediatric Association is planning to publish a call for parents and family doctors to vaccinate their children as soon as the Pfizer vaccine is approved for those under 16, Israel’s Kan public broadcaster reported Sunday.According to the report the association is waiting for regulators to approve the shot. On Friday Pfizer-BioNTech asked for authorization to use their COVID-19 vaccine on 12-15-year-olds in the United States. The letter plans to state that the vaccine is safe and effective for children and will help drive down virus rates in the country. The plan to publish the letter comes after a group of 93 doctors signed on to a letter urging the government to hold off on vaccinating children below the age of 16 until more is learned about the coronavirus and the inoculation’s impact. In their letter, the doctors called for the continued vaccination of vulnerable populations and claimed that it is still possible to fully reopen the economy even without vaccinating children who are less likely to become ill from the virus.“There must be a recognition that we do not understand everything about the virus, the vaccine against it and that the first commandment of medicine is ‘first do no harm,’” the doctors say.Among the letter’s signatories were Dr. Amir Shachar, emergency room director at Netanya’s Laniado Hospital, Dr. Yoav Yehezkeli, an expert in internal medicine and a lecturer at Tel Aviv University, and Dr. Avi Mizrahi, intensive care unit director at Rehovot’s Kaplan Medical Center. On Friday Pfizer-BioNTech asked for US authorization and said in a statement that they planned to make similar requests of other regulatory authorities worldwide in coming days.Their request to the Food and Drug Administration in the US comes after Phase 3 clinical trials of the Pfizer vaccine in 12-15 year olds were 100 percent effective in warding off the disease, according to the companies. In late March they published the results of trials carried out with 2,260 adolescents in the US who the companies said showed “robust anti-body responses.”The vaccine was “well tolerated with side effects generally consistent with those observed in participants 16 to 25 years of age,” the companies said Friday. For now the vaccine has emergency authorization for use in people 16 and older.Children are less likely to develop severe COVID so vaccinating them has been less of a priority than getting older people inoculated. The BioNTech/Pfizer shot is based on novel mRNA technology and was the first COVID-19 vaccine to be approved in the West late last year.Israel has so far vaccinated some 600 children between the ages of 12 and 16 in at-risk groups against the coronavirus with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and has seen no significant side effects from the shot, a top health official said last month.“We have so far immunized somewhere around 600 children,” Dr. Boaz Lev, a top member of the Health Ministry’s advisory team to the cabinet, told the Guardian. “We didn’t see any major side effects; even minor ones are quite rare. This is encouraging.”Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said children will soon begin receiving vaccines, but didn’t specify a timeline. The Israeli children who have been approved by medical authorities for vaccination had known risk factors including obesity, diabetes, severe lung and heart disease, immunosuppression disorders and cancer. The Health Ministry has recommended vaccinating some teenagers age 12-15 against COVID-19 if they suffer from specific underlying conditions. The report did not say whether all the children vaccinated in Israel were over the age of 12.

The bill passed with 95% support in a second vote-The debate over Judaism and Zionism that roiled, then unified University of Iowa-The idea of having a designated Jewish senator chosen by students at Hillel on the Undergraduate Student Government fanned accusations of a pro-Israel bias-By Ben Sales-APR 11,21-Today, 2:25 am

JTA — When the University of Iowa student senate debated a bill to give special representation to Jews on campus, Nick Nachtman voted no.Other minority groups had been given their own seats in the Undergraduate Student Government, chosen by their respective student organizations. The Jewish senator would be chosen by students at Hillel. In Nachtman’s view, that was a problem.“Unfortunately as I was researching Hillel International, I’ve seen quite a connection that holds a specifically positive view of the State of Israel,” said Nachtman, a first-year student at the university who is not Jewish. “I worry that having such a strong power connected to the people who are making this decision could influence them to hold a political belief in an office that shouldn’t have a political belief.”That night, the student senate rejected the proposal. But two weeks later, after Nachtman and other senators gave the matter more thought, they met again to reconsider their decision. This time, Nachtman did not raise any reservations with the idea of having a designated Jewish senator. The bill passed with 95% support. The reversal reflects a remarkable episode that unfolded over the past two weeks at the University of Iowa. Student leaders have worked through thorny questions about how to define anti-Semitism, whether Judaism is primarily a religion or ethnicity, what role Zionism plays in Jewish identity and whether Jews get more attention than other persecuted minority groups. And they have done so with little of the vitriol, or involvement by off-campus advocates, that often accompanies campus fights over bigotry against Jews.“A lot of us feel differently on different things regarding protecting speech of people that may speak on the Israel-Palestine conflict,” Maria Martin, a Jewish student who said she is involved in Hillel and also critical of Israel, said Tuesday at the senate meeting. “And we also agree on a lot of things regarding the really old nature of anti-Semitism.”The idea to create a Jewish “constituency senator” post arose when Kendall Michaels, a Jewish senior, searched for a way to address anti-Semitism she had encountered on the Iowa City campus. Several other minority groups there, such as LGBTQ+ students, veterans and Black students, have been afforded similar seats, and she thought a senator representing Jewish students could advocate for them.Michaels is a leader of her school’s Students Supporting Israel group, which has made public waves on other campuses. But the anti-Semitism that Michaels hoped to confront wasn’t connected to Israel, as it has been on other many campuses where debates about anti-Semitism have garnered national attention.Instead, she was alarmed by ignorant comments and tasteless jokes that she had heard on campus. Michaels has been asked where her horns are and saw an acquaintance, who knows she is Jewish, post a swastika to social media along with the message “I hate all Jews.” She worries about wearing a Jewish necklace around campus.“Most students, when these things happen, they’re scared to ask for help,” Michaels said. “I wouldn’t say it happens every day, but it happens enough that there’s something that needs to be done. It shouldn’t happen at all.”She attributed the anti-Semitism to the divide between Jewish students from places like the suburbs of Chicago, like her, and peers from rural Iowa who had little prior exposure to Jews. The school’s Hillel estimates that there are about 600 Jews amid a total undergraduate student body of over 22,000.Two senators worked with Michaels to craft the bill giving those students representation in the student government. Some of the other groups afforded constituency senators have populations that are smaller than or equivalent to that of Jews on campus. The bill stipulated that the Jewish senator, like other constituency senators, would be chosen by a student group that represents them — in this case by the students affiliated with the campus Hillel. But at the senate session on March 23, several student senators raised objections to the bill. Some, including Nachtman, worried about appointing a senator affiliated with a pro-Israel institution because the Senate does not generally comment on international issues.Others wondered whether by creating a post for Jews, the senate was unfairly privileging a religion at a public state university.“I know that it’s more than just a religion, and I know that it extends to ethnic ties and all of that,”  said Marco Oceguera, who noted that he has Jewish ancestry. “I feel like the Jewish identity, Judaism as a whole, is one of the three major Abrahamic religions, and the fact that we’d be giving them a voice and giving a platform for that identity, even though it extends beyond the religious aspect, like I said, it’s impossible to represent the ethnic aspect without representing the religious aspect.”More than an hour into the March 23 debate, Elke Heckner, a professor who teaches about the Holocaust, said that she was “a little bit horrified” by what she was hearing. She was distressed that some students were arguing that Jews should not be entitled to the same kind of representation as LGBTQ students or Black students because Judaism is a religion.“This is meant to be a representation of an ethnicity,” Heckner told the students. “Can you guys please think about what your resistance is to conceiving of being Jewish in terms of cultural terms? What’s up with that? Why do you guys have such an investment in trying to show that there can only be quote-unquote religious Jews? I find that proposition in itself really problematic.”When the bill narrowly failed to reach the two-thirds needed for approval, by a vote of 24-14 with one abstention, it was a shock to Jewish students. The next night, dozens of students attended a town hall where speakers complained that Jewish calls for support in the face of hate were going unheard. This was another situation where Jewish students weren’t given a seat at the table“This was another situation where Jewish students weren’t given a seat at the table,” Mollie Chez, Hillel’s student president, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency at the time.Chez said she thought the student government debate reflected a misunderstanding of Jewish identity.“They assumed that just because their Christian identity is one way, Jewish identity is the same in nature, that you couldn’t separate Jewish identity from religious identity. That is false,” she said. But unlike in episodes at other universities, the weeks-long debate did not attract the attention of the national Jewish organizations that typically weigh in when they feel Jews or Zionists face discrimination on campus. On other campuses, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, also a Big Ten school, complaints of anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism have drawn in a range of groups who have engaged in public, coordinated activist campaigns. They have lobbied the schools’ administrations, sought media coverage and even successfully petitioned the federal government to open investigations into civil rights violations.Instead, largely out of the public eye, the Iowa students worked out the issues by themselves. The debate was civil if passionate. The university administration did not get involved (and did not respond to a JTA request for comment). The executive director of the campus Hillel let students take the lead.“Students are still meeting and getting together, and figuring out all of this and what it means, and it’s kind of beginning, if that makes sense,” Iowa Hillel Executive Director Ashley Carol-Fingerhut told JTA last week amid the ongoing debate. “They’re concentrated on creating educational opportunities for senators and other students to learn about Judaism.”Things have started to change. Following the outcry, the senators, who are mostly not Jewish, decided to vote again. Nachtman, who did not respond to multiple interview requests, told JTA via email that “a great deal of us feel that the bill did not have an opportunity to be properly considered, discussed, debated, and amended by the student senate.”When the senate debated the bill again, the discussion took only 45 minutes and mostly concerned technical matters. One extended conversation, about whether to use a specific definition of anti-Semitism as the Jewish senator’s guide in identifying anti-Semitism on campus, made quick work of a question that has locked politicians and activists around the world in debate.Their debate has centered on the way that the document, popularly called the IHRA Working Definition, includes some forms of criticizing Israel in its examples of anti-Semitism. That has caused some critics of Israeli policy to reject the definition; some recently proposed an alternate definition. But at the University of Iowa, student government leaders quickly came to a friendly compromise: The students agreed to endorse the IHRA definition — minus one example that says calling Israel a racist endeavor constitutes anti-Semitism.The final vote establishing the Jewish senate seat was close to unanimous. And Jewish students said they felt heard on a campus where that has not always been the case.“The decision that was made previously was an uneducated decision,” Chez told JTA following the final vote. “Senators got caught up in the political rhetoric. The couple weeks in between gave them an idea of the impact this act has on the community, and a minority, and their fellow students at Iowa.”

KKL-JNF leadership approves purchase of West Bank land for isolated settlements-Board to vote on controversial policy change next week; in February, KKL-JNF allocated $11.58 million for purchase of West Bank land-By TOI staff-11 April 2021, 10:14 pm

The Jewish National Fund’s board of directors approved a policy change Sunday, permitting the organization to purchase land in the West Bank, including areas with isolated settlements. The decision is still subject to the approval of the Jewish National Fund’s board, which will convene next week to discuss the policy change. In February, the Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF) voted to allocate NIS 38 million ($11.58 million) for the purchase of land in the West Bank. The controversial vote indicated a policy change — KKL-JNF would take operations beyond the Green Line to another level, purchasing land for the purpose of expanding settlements. (KKL-JNF is a separate entity from JNF-USA.)-The February decision — which passed by a single vote — specified that there would be no purchases in the districts of the Palestinian cities Nablus and Jenin — areas with very few Jewish settlements. In the current proposal, the note has been omitted, Haaretz reported last week.KKL-JNF host a gala dinner at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Jerusalem, in celebration of a brand new visitor center set to open in the Hula Valley in northern Israel. The dinner was held in honor of former Canadian PM Stephen J. Harper, who gave some words of greeting, with Israeli PM Netanyahu and KKL-JNF global chairman, Daniel Atar. November 5, 2019. (Marc Israel Sellem/POOL/File)-The resolution was based on the opinion of retired judge Yoseph Elon, which stated that KKL-JNF can operate in the territories to promote communal, environmental, and educational projects.Centrist and leftist factions on the KKL-JNF’s board of directors have submitted a counter-opinion by Shachar Ben-Meir, which contests Elon’s judgment. Both opinions focus on a sentence in the organization’s Memorandum of Association, which allows KKL-JNF to acquire land “in any area under the jurisdiction of the government of Israel,” Haaretz said.
Yaron Rosenthal shows JNF chairman Danny Atar a tree trunk that allegedly cut down by residents from the village of Beit Ummar, at Kfar Etzion forest in Gush Etzion, in the West Bank on December 20, 2017. (Gershon Elinson/Flash90/File)-According to the proposal, KKL-JNF will reportedly purchase only private land, with a preference for land where settlements already exist, or that allows for the expansion of existing settlements. If Israel requests that KKL-JNF purchase land that does not meet those criteria, the decision will be left to KKL-JNF’s leadership committee. The committee will be able to authorize the purchase of any land that does not meet these criteria as long as it is under the jurisdiction of Israel, said Haaretz. After the February vote, the left-wing Meretz faction said it would be filing for a repeat vote given the close results.A group of board members representing left-leaning factions subsequently filed a petition demanding that the vote be annulled. They cited malpractice by KKL-JNF chairman Avi Duvdevani, claiming he muted certain members on the Zoom meeting and prevented others from answering questions, and then rushed the vote. In addition, the petitioners claimed that legal opinions criticizing KKL-JNF’s covert conduct beyond the Green Line were hidden from board members.KKL-JNF, established in 1901 to buy and develop land for Jewish settlement and best known for the hundreds of millions of trees it has planted throughout Israel, serves as the Jewish people’s custodian for some 15 percent of the land in the country, the management of which is carried out by the Israel Lands Authority. An organization officially registered as a company for the benefit of the public, KKL-JNF works in the fields of forestry, water, education, community development, tourism, and research and development. The World Zionist Organization is its parent body.

NYT: Explosion damages nuke plant's internal power supply-Natanz incident said to cause huge damage, set back Iran’s program by 9 months-Israeli and US intelligence officials said to confirm Mossad involvement in apparent cyberattack on uranium enrichment facility, which Tehran calls an act of ‘nuclear terrorism’ By Judah Ari Gross and TOI staff-APR 11,21-Today, 3:18 am

The major power cut at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility, which Tehran described as an act of “nuclear terrorism,” apparently caused significant damage to the centrifuges and set back Iran’s uranium enrichment ability by several months, Israeli and US media quoted unnamed intelligence sources as saying Sunday.Senior Israeli officials Israel hinted at, but did not confirm, involvement in the apparent cyberattack, although the New York Times cited American and Israeli intelligence officials confirming there had been an Israeli role.An unnamed intelligence official told Israel’s Kan public broadcaster that the damage at the site was “serious” and that damage was apparently caused to the various centrifuges installed at the top-secret underground center, setting back Iran’s ability to enrich uranium. The source said Iran’s abilities had been seriously set back and the timing of the apparent strike was not coincidental.Israel’s Channel 13, also citing unnamed intelligence officials, offered a similar assessment, saying that the cyberattack caused “severe damage at the heart of Iran’s enrichment program.”Meanwhile, the New York Times, citing two intelligence officials briefed on the damage, said that “it had been caused by a large explosion that completely destroyed the independent — and heavily protected — internal power system that supplies the underground centrifuges that enrich uranium.”The report said that it would take at least nine months to restore Natanz’s production. In the early hours of Sunday morning, the underground Natanz facility suffered an electrical disruption in what was widely speculated to be an Israeli cyberattack. Iran said the attack did not cause any casualties and did not cause radioactive pollution. Israel has officially refrained from commenting on the matter, and Iran has not specifically accused the Jewish state of being responsible for the incident. On Sunday evening, unnamed intelligence sources were cited by a number of Hebrew news outlets as saying that the Mossad was involved in the attack. The New York Times also cited American and Israeli intelligence officials confirming there had been an Israeli role.Israel made no official comment on the incident, but officials from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on down hinted at Israeli responsibility. The Israeli comments, along with Hebrew media reports attributing the cyberattack to the Mossad, marked a significant change. Israel is normally completely silent on the secret exploits of its security services, and Israel’s military censor routinely prevents publication of such details, forcing Israeli media to cite foreign media reports, which did not happen this time.On Sunday, Israel’s government announced that the high-level security cabinet is scheduled to meet next week for the first time since early February, reportedly to discuss the Iran issue. The meeting was reportedly called at the request of Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, in light of the recent exchanges between Israel and Iran.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to refer to the recent events in Iran at a ceremony honoring the country’s security forces on Sunday night, saying the fight against the Islamic Republic was a massive undertaking.“The fight against Iran and its proxies and the Iranian armament is a giant mission. The situation that exists today doesn’t say anything about the situation that will exist tomorrow,” Netanyahu said.Sunday’s incident came as US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin landed in Israel for talks with Netanyahu and Gantz. The US, Israel’s main security partner, is seeking to reenter the 2015 atomic accord aimed at limiting Tehran’s program so that it cannot pursue a nuclear weapon — a move staunchly opposed by Israel, particularly Netanyahu.Meeting with Austin on Sunday, Gantz said Israel viewed America as an ally against all threats, including Iran.“The Tehran of today poses a strategic threat to international security, to the entire Middle East and to the State of Israel,” Gantz said. “And we will work closely with our American allies to ensure that any new agreement with Iran will secure the vital interests of the world, of the United States, prevent a dangerous arms race in our region, and protect the State of Israel.”In addition to an ongoing, largely covert fight on the nuclear front, Tehran and Jerusalem are engaged in a maritime shadow war, with both sides blaming the other for explosions on vessels. In recent months, at least two Israeli-owned cargo ships have been damaged in alleged Iranian attacks, one in the Gulf of Oman and the other as it was sailing to India.IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi appeared to reference the recent tensions between Israel and Iran in a speech on Sunday. The Israeli military’s “operations in the Middle East are not hidden from the eyes of the enemy,” Kohavi said. “They are watching us, seeing [our] abilities and weighing their steps with caution.”“The assessment is that the fault in the Natanz power grid – result of an Israeli cyber operation,” a Kan reporter tweeted, without any of the usual hedging. The assessment is that the fault in the Natanz power grid – result of an Israeli cyber operation https://t.co/927kzilLFB — Amichai Stein (@AmichaiStein1) April 11, 2021-The timing of the attack came the day after Iran celebrated its National Nuclear Technology Day; the day after Iranian scientists began operating more powerful centrifuges; and amid ongoing talks in Vienna aimed at revitalizing the flagging 2015 nuclear accord between Iran and world powers, which Israel fiercely opposes. The disruption at Natanz appears to have been designed to counter Iran’s efforts to raise pressure on the United States by amassing greater quantities of uranium and enriching it to higher levels as the two sides negotiate a return to the 2015 nuclear deal. The spokesman for Iran’s atomic program, Ali Akbar Salehi, confirmed that the electrical disruption at Natanz was a deliberate act of sabotage, calling it “nuclear terrorism.”In comments carried by Iranian state news, Salehi refrained from identifying a perpetrator, but said the attack was carried out by those who oppose Iran’s ongoing negotiations with the West to remove the sanctions against Tehran through the nuclear deal.“To thwart the goals of this terrorist movement, the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue to seriously improve nuclear technology on the one hand and to lift oppressive sanctions on the other hand,” Salehi said, according to state TV.He added: “While condemning this desperate move, the Islamic Republic of Iran emphasizes the need for a confrontation by the international bodies and the (International Atomic Energy Agency) against this nuclear terrorism.”The apparent strike comes amid surging tensions between Israel and Iran.Last Tuesday, an Iranian cargo ship said to serve as a floating base for Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard forces off the coast of Yemen was struck by an explosion, likely from a limpet mine. Iran has blamed Israel for the blast. An American official told the New York times that Israel was behind the attack.A private Israeli intelligence firm released a satellite photograph of the ship from Sunday, showing that the vessel has not moved since last week’s attack and remained anchored in the Red Sea, directly between Yemen and Eritrea. The #Iran|ian #Saviz. (@ImageSatIntl) April 11, 2021-The Natanz nuclear facility, which maintains aboveground workshops and subterranean uranium enrichment halls, is considered a major facet of Iran’s atomic program. The alleged Israeli attack against it came hours after scientists at the site turned on a chain of 164 advanced IR-6 centrifuges that threatened to shorten the amount of time it would take for Iran to amass the highly enriched uranium needed for a nuclear bomb.On Saturday, officials also began testing the IR-9 centrifuge, which they say will enrich uranium 50 times faster than Iran’s first-generation centrifuges, the IR-1. The nuclear deal limited Iran to using only IR-1s for enrichment.Natanz was largely built underground to withstand enemy airstrikes. It became a flashpoint for Western fears about Iran’s nuclear program in 2002, when satellite photos showed Iran building its underground centrifuges facility at the site, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of the capital, Tehran.Last summer, an explosion rocked the Natanz facility, in what was also said to have been an Israeli attack aimed at disrupting uranium enrichment and research at the site.In 2010, the United States and Israel allegedly halted Iran’s nuclear program with the Stuxnet virus, which caused Iranian centrifuges to tear themselves apart, reportedly destroying a fifth of the country’s machines.Iran has also blamed Israel for the killing last year of scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who began the country’s military nuclear program decades earlier.Since then-US president Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, Tehran has abandoned all the limits of its uranium stockpile. It now enriches up to 20 percent purity, a technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%. Iran maintains that its atomic program is for peaceful purposes — despite its leaders regularly threatening to destroy Israel and the Mossad stealing and publicizing Iranian documents showing plans to affix a nuclear device onto a missile — but fears about Tehran having the ability to make a bomb saw world powers reach the deal with the Islamic Republic in 2015.The deal lifted economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for it limiting its program and allowing IAEA inspectors to keep a close watch on its work, though not at military sites and some other locations — a key sticking point for critics of the deal.US President Joe Biden hopes to return to the 2015 agreement, which his predecessor Trump abandoned in favor of a “maximum pressure” campaign in hopes of bringing Tehran to its knees. However, Biden has maintained that he will remove sanctions on Iran only after it returns to compliance with the nuclear deal. Iran, meanwhile, is demanding full sanctions relief before it returns to the negotiating table.Agencies contributed to this report.

Ex-IDF intel chief after Natanz incident: Maximum pressure on Iran hasn’t worked-Whatever the damage at enrichment facility, Amos Yadlin says Iran has the knowledge to push its nuclear program forward; 2nd analyst says Tehran may soon lash out at Israel-By TOI staff-11 April 2021, 11:59 pm

Amos Yadlin, the former IDF chief of Military Intelligence, said he was concerned about Iran’s nuclear program on Sunday, after a major power cut that halted uranium enrichment at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility.Unidentified intelligence sources told Hebrew media that Israel’s Mossad security service was behind the power outage. Iran described the act as “nuclear terrorism.”The incident came after Tehran and Washington opened indirect talks about rescuing the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal in Vienna last week, a potential rapprochement firmly opposed by Israel.Recent weeks have also seen escalating tensions and accusations of maritime sabotage between Israel and Iran.Yadlin said an electricity cut caused by a cyberattack would not be a significant problem if Iran has backup systems, such as generators, and would be more of a message to Tehran. If the suspected attack also hit the facility’s backup power systems, “it would be more serious,” and would likely take Iran several months to recover from, he said.“But if somebody really hit all 6,000 centrifuges — old and new — that’s an extraordinary achievement,” said Yadlin, who heads the head of the Institute for National Security Studies.Yadlin said more leaks in the coming days would reveal more about the damage to the facility.Iran has the necessary knowledge to continue forward with its nuclear program, regardless of the damage, he added. He said former US president Donald Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign had not slowed down Iran’s nuclear efforts, but spurred them forward, and that Iran was setting the terms at the talks in Vienna with its hardline demand for sweeping sanctions relief.“The maximum pressure campaign did not stop them, it did the opposite,” he said.Israel’s intelligence and military were on top of the situation, but the country’s diplomatic efforts were flagging, as Netanyahu focused on politics and his trial and the government remain mired in a political stalemate following last month’s election, Yadlin said.Channel 13’s defense analyst Alon Ben-David said that damage to Natanz could undermine Iran’s leverage in talks with the US.“In security and intelligence channels, US officials expressed satisfaction with the damage to the facility,” he said.Channel 12 defense analyst Ehud Ya’ari said that, with the Mossad’s apparent leaks to Hebrew media taking responsibility for the incident at Natanz, “We’re getting close to the moment” where Tehran will have no choice but to respond with a military strike of its own.Ya’ari noted that Iran has been restrained until now, despite the November 2020 assassination of its former nuclear chief Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, which it blamed on Israel, and successive Israeli strikes in Syria. Israeli intelligence expressed fears several months ago that Iran was reaching a boiling point and might soon lash out, he said.Ya’ari added that, despite the various setbacks attributed to Israel, Iran has continued to make progress with its nuclear program. He said Iran’s statements about Sunday’s incident indicated that officials there believed the outage was a deliberate attack and they had a right to respond. If they call it “nuclear terror, it means damage was caused to the centrifuges and uranium stockpiles there,” he surmised.Former CIA director James Woolsey said last month that Washington is underestimating the Iranian nuclear threat, that Tehran already has the components necessary to build a bomb, and that US intelligence and nuclear inspectors could miss signs Iran was breaking out toward a nuclear weapon.North Korea, hungry for Iranian oil, could test Iranian weapons itself, or trade knowledge with Tehran, under the radar of US intelligence. Iran’s nuclear program has been abetted by North Korea, Russia, China and probably Pakistan, Woolsey said.In the early hours of Sunday morning, the underground Natanz facility suffered an electrical disruption in what was widely speculated to be an Israeli cyberattack. Iran said the attack did not cause any casualties and did not cause radioactive pollution. Israel has officially refrained from commenting on the matter, and Iran has not specifically accused the Jewish state of being responsible for the incident. On Sunday evening, unnamed intelligence sources were cited by a number of Hebrew news outlets as saying that the Mossad was involved in the attack, which was reportedly more severe than Iran had indicated.According to Channel 13 news, the cyberattack caused “severe damage at the heart of Iran’s enrichment program.”The timing of the attack was also said to not be incidental, coming the day after Iran celebrated its National Nuclear Technology Day; the day after Iranian scientists began operating more powerful centrifuges; and amid ongoing talks in Vienna aimed at revitalizing the flagging 2015 nuclear accord between Iran and world powers, which Israel fiercely opposes. The disruption at Natanz appears to have been designed to counter Iran’s efforts to raise pressure on the United States by amassing greater quantities of uranium and enriching it to higher levels, as the two sides negotiate a return to the 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran demands South Korea release billions in funds frozen under US sanctions-Tehran’s VP makes claim in press conference with South Korean PM; visit comes after Iran released South Korean-flagged tanker it seized three months ago-By AFP-11 April 2021, 11:20 pm

TEHRAN, Iran — Tehran urged Seoul on Sunday to release billions of dollars of Iranian funds frozen in South Korea under US sanctions over its nuclear program, during a visit by the South Korean premier.“We call on the (South) Korean government to release Iran’s financial resources as soon as possible,” Iran’s First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri said during a joint news conference with Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun in Tehran.Chung’s visit comes after Iran on Friday released a South Korean-flagged tanker it had seized three months ago, as Tehran pressed Seoul to unblock billions in frozen oil funds.Iran had accused South Korea of holding “hostage” $7 billion of its funds, but Tehran has repeatedly denied that the seizure of the vessel was linked to the issue.#Iran VP Jahangiri slams #SouthKorea firms' performance during sanctions era, saying such measures tarnished country's image before #Iranian nation. Analysis-After Saviz strike, Israel may be in dire straits trying to battle Iran at sea-Jerusalem appears to be wading deeper into a water fight with Tehran in the Red Sea, while remaining vulnerable in the Persian Gulf, with no guarantees the US will dive in to help-By Lazar Berman-11 April 2021, 11:04 pm

In early March, after an Israel-owned ship was damaged by limpet mines in the Gulf of Oman, The Times of Israel wrote that “Israel could send its own message by targeting an Iranian ship in the Red Sea, such as the Saviz.”Last Tuesday, Israel is believed to have done just that, attacking that very Iranian vessel, with mines of its own, according to reports. As detailed in that story a month ago, “since 2017, the Saudis have alleged the Saviz served as a maritime base and weapons transshipment point for the [Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps].”In many ways, the Saviz was the perfect target. After the covert maritime struggle between Israel and Iran burst into the open this year, with Tehran displaying new audaciousness in its attacks on Israeli-owned vessels, Israel had to respond in a way that would send a clear message. But in so doing, Israel risks getting in a fight in which it has some glaring vulnerabilities. It also runs the danger of irritating a US administration intent on restarting nuclear talks with Iran, negotiations that could be scuppered, should the struggle between Iran and its regional foes heat up.The IRGC mothership-The Saviz, anchored in international waters just off Eritrea’s Dahlak archipelago, lay vulnerable and relatively close to Israel. In that regard, it was an obvious choice as a target. The vessel – formerly known as the Azalea, Iran Ocean Candle, Lantana, and Ocean Candle — was initially put under sanctions by the US government, but was removed from the list of designated vessels on January 16, 2016, the day the 2015 JCPOA nuclear deal went into effect. In April 2020, the Treasury Department announced that the Saviz was back on the list. The “mothership,” as described in a Washington Institute report, came to public attention in 2017, when the Saudi-led Arab Coalition fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen released a dossier showing uniformed personnel on the ostensibly civilian vessel. Coalition spokesman Col. Turki Al-Maliki accused the Saviz of supporting Houthi naval attacks. In 2018, the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya channel aired footage of the ship, as well as Boston Whaler-type speedboats on deck, typically used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps Navy.“It has been equipped with four 50-caliber machine guns that have been hidden by the ships’ crew…” alleges the report. “It also has a satellite and highly-developed military communications system.” Al Arabiya cameras captured one of the speedboats transferring equipment from a passing Iranian ship to the Saviz. The ship drew the ire of locals as well. In November 2018, fishermen in the Yemeni city of Taiz staged a protest against the Saviz, calling it a threat to their well-being, according to local reports. The vessel has been anchored a few miles from the narrow Bab al-Mandeb straits at the southern end of the Red Sea since 2017, and has barely moved since then, according to reports based on maritime tracking technology.“It’s more like a platform, a floating island, a barge, than a ship,” said Steffan Watkins, a private open-source defense researcher based in Canada.Based on its location, the Saviz can keep a close eye on ships – including Israeli vessels – sailing through the key shipping lane, and is also well-positioned to play a supporting role in attacks on tankers, allegedly by Iranian proxies, that have taken place in the area.Photo from Saudi coalition dossier shows Iranian cargo ship Saviz with alleged weapons smuggling boats on deck. (@ImageSatIntl) April 11, 2021-On Sunday, private satellite photography analysis firm ImageSat International released a picture of the Iranian ship taken earlier in the day, showing that it had not moved since the attack and remained anchored in the Red Sea, between Yemen and Eritrea.Deterrence and its limits-The alleged attack on the Saviz is the latest incident in a simmering gray zone conflict between Israel and Iran.“Gray zone operations” are coercive, ambiguous actions taken by actors trying to upend the regional order while staying below the threshold that would justify a military response by stronger parties. NATO militaries have increasingly recognized them as a challenge.Experts believe the gray zone approach is a central component of Iran’s national security strategy. Deniable attacks on civilian shipping fit into Iran’s broader, asymmetric naval strategy. An attack that makes attribution difficult “creates ambiguity that serves Iran’s interests,” said Anthony Cordesman, the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy at the Washington, DC-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. “If you can use gray zone operations to achieve your objectives without escalating to more serious conflict, these kinds of operations offer you advantages and a level of security that higher intensity combat doesn’t. And Iran has practiced a very wide range of attacks.”Israeli soldiers survey the border with Syria from a military post in the Golan Heights, following a series of aerial clashes with Syrian and Iranian forces in Syria, on February 10, 2018. (Flash90/File)-Part of that campaign is unfolding on Israel’s doorstep. While Syria is consumed by a decade-long civil war, Iran has been trying to open a new front on the border. It has sent allied forces to the Syrian Golan Heights to set up infrastructure for carrying out attacks on Israeli targets. Iran has also been working to arm its Hezbollah proxy terrorist group with precision rocket capabilities, shipping weapons through Syria to Lebanon. However, Israel has displayed competence in sniffing out Iranian actions and a firm willingness to disrupt them using military force. Israel’s air force has launched hundreds, even thousands, of strikes against Iran and its proxies in Syria and Iraq since 2011.There has been naval theater in this struggle as well, though it only came to light recently. In March, the Wall Street Journal reported that Israel has targeted at least 12 ships bound for Syria, most of them transporting Iranian oil, with mines and other weapons, starting in late 2019.In likely retaliation, Iran reportedly struck two Israeli-owned ships in March, both in the Gulf of Oman.An Israeli response in the Red Sea seems entirely plausible, said Yaakov Amidror, former national security advisor and senior fellow at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategic Studies.“It’s a range in which Israel knows how to operate,” he told The Times of Israel. The attack, if Israel was behind it, also makes strategic sense, he argued. “The endgame is to make it clear to the Iranians that they cannot strike civilian ships that have a connection to Israel that haven’t violated any international law,” he said. “And if they continue to do that, then Israel knows how to operate very from its borders.”“It’s an area that we don’t want to stop sailing in… The Iranians should know that there’s a price for these types of actions,” he added.Others aren’t so sanguine about the operation. “Even though on the operational level, this is fascinating, but trying to evaluate what the strategic goal is, I’m not sure it’s defined well,” said Prof. Shaul Chorev, head of the University Of Haifa’s Maritime Policy & Strategy Research Center. “It might be some kind of deterrence to the IRGC not to attack again an Israeli ship.”But deterrence is not an easy goal to achieve or even measure. While Israel’s operations in Syria seem to have forced decision-makers in Tehran to accept that they would be wise to avoid attacking Israeli soldiers and infrastructure from across the border, the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman are different stories entirely. Israel has little capacity – beyond submarines — to project power there, while Iran has invested heavily in pursuing hegemony over the seas in its neighborhood, which includes the Strait of Hormuz, a shipping lane no less important than the Bab el-Mandab.“The experience that we have is that the Iranians are not hesitating to escalate in an area where the Israeli navy has no capability to operate,” said Chorev, a former deputy chief of the Israel Navy.Iran will “definitely” respond to a recent attack on an Iranian ship in the Red Sea, a spokesman for the Islamic Republic’s military said last week.Splitting the seas-Israel cannot put its soldiers on Israeli civilian ships in the Persian Gulf, as they could be captured by Iran. The most promising avenue for Israel is to seek some sort of security guarantees by the US and Arab Gulf states to protect Israeli shipping. The Pentagon’s January decision to include Israel in its Central Command will make it easier for the Jewish state to work closely with the US Fifth Fleet and its Arab partners in the Persian Gulf.A centerpiece of Israel’s normalization with the Gulf states was increased trade, especially with the global shipping hub of Dubai. If Israel is not careful, it might cause an escalation that leads to increased attacks where Iran knows Israel is quite vulnerable.“This situation endangers other Israeli civilian ships, and the fear is that the Iranians will try to strike other vessels. Someone must take this into consideration,” a defense official told Walla! news. The balance of power between Israel and Iran in the Red Sea, where the Saviz is anchored, is much more even. Israel’s Eilat naval base is closer to the Red Sea theater than the nearest Iranian base, but Iranian-backed Houthi rebels control coastline and islands near the Bab al-Mandeb straits. The Houthis have targeted civilian and military ships from their bases there. The Red Sea is a difficult area for any navy to operate in. Its narrow sea lanes mean ships sail near each other and near the coastline of countries like Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Yemen, which have all struggled to impose control over swathes of their territory. Ships sailing through the Red Sea are easy for governments and rebel groups to track in real-time.Still, some believe that in light of the Iranian threat and the burgeoning trade relationship with Gulf countries, Israel must improve its capabilities in the Red Sea.“I think the Navy should move its center of activity from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea,” said Chorev. That task is more complex than it may seem. In addition to the proximity to hostile groups like the Houthis, Israel must gain permission from Egypt every time it wants to move ships from the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea by sailing a naval vessel through the Suez Canal.“It’s not easy to operate in this area,” stressed Chorev. “Nevertheless we have to operate there.”The war over the war-The same day that the attack on the Saviz was carried out, US and Iranian negotiators carried out indirect talks in Vienna to seek a way back to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, better known as the Iran nuclear deal. Some Israeli outlets suggested that Israel timed its operation to coincide with the Vienna talks, possibly as a message to either Washington or its Arab partners that it would continue to operate against Iranian threats.Amidror dismissed that notion out of hand. “That’s media nonsense, come on. An operation like this takes two or three weeks to prepare, no one knew what the date of the meeting would be.”But there could be a different connection to the nuclear talks. The Saviz attack came to light through an American leak to The New York Times. By revealing the incident, the Biden administration may well have been sending a message to Israel that it disapproves of such operations while it is trying to find a formula that will allow it to rejoin the nuclear deal.Israel, it appears, is not backing down. On Sunday morning, word came of another mysterious attack, this time what appeared to be a cyber assault sabotaging the Natanz nuclear plant.Officially Israel has remained mum, but by Sunday evening, leaks were reaching Hebrew-language media from unidentified intelligence sources — not US officials to a US outlet — that Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency was responsible for the attacks, what may have been intended as an Israeli message back to the Biden administration that it will not be cowed by Washington’s pre-nuclear talks shushing.Israel’s foe, though, is not in Washington, but in Tehran, and if it wants to deter Iran and feel safe sailing through the Middle East, it will likely need to find a way to work with the Biden administration and quit rocking the boat.

AOL Associated Press-Pentagon chief declares 'ironclad' US commitment to Israel-ROBERT BURNS-Sun, April 11, 2021, 1:52 PM

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Sunday declared an “enduring and ironclad” American commitment to Israel, reinforcing support at a tense time in Israeli politics and amid questions about the Biden administration's efforts to revive nuclear negotiations with Israel's archenemy, Iran.Austin's first talks in Israel since he became Pentagon chief in January come as the United States seeks to leverage Middle East diplomatic progress made by the Trump administration, which brokered a deal normalizing relations between Israel and several Arab states. After meeting with Defense Minister Benny Gantz in Tel Aviv, Austin said he had reaffirmed “our commitment to Israel is enduring and ironclad." Austin made no mention of Iran. Gantz, in his own remarks while standing beside Austin, said his country views the United States as a “full partner” against threats, “not the least, Iran.” Neither official took questions from reporters.“The Tehran of today presents a strategic threat to international security, the entire Middle East and to the state of Israel,” Gantz said in his prepared statement. “We will work closely with our American allies to ensure that any new agreement with Iran will security the vital interests of the world and of the United States, prevent a dangerous arms race in our region and protect the state of Israel.”Yoel Guzansky, a senior fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies, a Tel Aviv think tank, said Austin's visit is important in part because it is the first by a member of President Joe Biden's Cabinet.“They want to show that they did come here with clean hands and they want to listen,” Guzansky said. “They want to listen to Israel’s worries and perhaps other partners’ worries about the negotiation about Iran.”Austin is steeped in the finer points of Middle East defense and security issues. He served four years as head of U.S. Central Command, capping a 41-year Army career that included commanding U.S. forces in Iraq.Flying overnight from Washington, Austin arrived in Tel Aviv in the tense aftermath of the country's fourth inconclusive election in the past two years. Israeli President Reuven Rivlin last week gave embattled Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the difficult task of trying to form a new government. The key backdrop to Austin’s visit is the Israeli government’s concern about the Biden administration's attempt to work out an arrangement to reenter the Iran nuclear deal, which in Israel’s view is fatally flawed. Netanyahu has for years described Iran as an existential threat to his nation due to Iran's alleged pursuit of a nuclear weapon and its support for militant groups like Lebanon’s Hezbollah.Netanyahu, leading a state with its own secret nuclear weapons program, has accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons to use with its ballistic missiles. Iran has maintained its nuclear program is peaceful. Netanyahu has also kept up his criticism of the Iran nuclear deal, which, if followed, strictly limits Tehran’s ability to enrich and stockpile uranium, blocking it from being able to make a weapon. “History has taught us that deals like this, with extremist regimes like this, are worth nothing,” Netanyahu said last week.By coincidence or not, Austin's arrived as Iran reported that its underground Natanz nuclear facility lost power Sunday just hours after starting up new advanced centrifuges capable of enriching uranium faster. If Israel caused the blackout, it would further heightens tensions between the two nations, already engaged in a shadow conflict across the wider Middle East.Last week, an Iranian ship said to be acting as a Revolutionary Guard base off the coast of Yemen was struck by an explosion. Iran blamed Israel for the blast. In addition to repeated assurances by Republican and Democratic administrations that the United States will endeavor to preserve Israel's qualitative military edge over its regional adversaries, Washington for years has invested heavily in helping Israel develop missile defense technologies.Iron Dome is one of the most-touted successes in Israel missile defense. It is a mobile anti-rocket system developed to intercept short-range unguided rockets. It has shot down more than 2,000 projectiles fired from the Gaza Strip since it was deployed a decade ago. The U.S. Army recently bought two Iron Dome batteries at the request of Congress to counter cruise missiles. There are questions in Israel about U.S. intentions in shifting military priorities away from the Middle East in order to focus more intensively on China and Russia as more significant threats to U.S. security.Iran is the central source of concern by Israel and by support groups in the United States. The Jewish Institute for National Security of America, or JINSA, argued in a report last week that such a shift in U.S. priorities would “send the wrong” signal as the Biden administration begins indirect talks with Iran on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal with international powers. President Donald Trump withdrew from it in 2018.“With reduced defensive capabilities and perceived American retrenchment from the region, Tehran and its proxies will only be incentivized to pursue even more dangerous actions to destabilize its neighbors,” the JINSA report said.Michael Makovsky, the president of JINSA and a former Pentagon official, said Austin's visit is especially timely, given the Biden administration's moves toward engaging Iran on its nuclear program."Embracing and strengthening Israel sends a pointed signal to Iran, which will only enhance a credible military option against Iran and U.S. leverage in the talks,” Makovsky said in a statement.___Associated Press writers Josef Federman and Ilan Ben Zion in Jerusalem contributed to this report.

Associated Press-Ukraine says 1 soldier killed in east as tensions rise-Sun, April 11, 2021, 11:08 AM

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The Ukrainian military said that a soldier was killed and another seriously wounded in artillery fire from Russia-backed separatist rebels Sunday, as hostilities rise sharply in the country’s east.As of the reported attack, Ukraine says 27 soldiers have been killed in the east this year, more than half the number who died in all of 2020. Attacks have intensified in recent weeks and Russia has built up troops along the Ukraine border.Russia denies Western claims that it has sent troops into eastern Ukraine to help the rebels, but officials say the army could intervene if Ukraine tries to retake the area by force. The troops buildup has raised sharp concerns in the West.U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Sunday that “if Russia acts recklessly, or aggressively, there will be costs, there will be consequences.”Ukrainian forces and Russia-backed separatists have been fighting in eastern Ukraine since shortly after Moscow’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula. More than 14,000 people have died in the conflict, and efforts to negotiate a political settlement have stalled.

Associated Press-US-Philippines officials discuss concerns over China's ships-ROBERT BURNS-Sat, April 10, 2021, 10:32 PM

ABOARD A U.S. MILITARY AIRCRAFT (AP) — Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Saturday discussed with his Philippine counterpart China’s recent positioning of “militia vessels” near the Philippines in the South China Sea.Austin spoke by phone with Philippine Secretary of National Defense Delfin Lorenzana while Austin was flying from Washington to Israel to begin an international trip.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said Austin and Lorenzana discussed the situation in the South China Sea and the recent massing of Chinese vessels at Whitsun Reef, which has drawn criticism from Manila-China has said its vessels are there for fishing. In their phone call, Austin proposed to Lorenzana several measures to deepen defense cooperation, including by “enhancing situational awareness of threats in the South China Sea,” Kirby said. He did not elaborate.Kirby said earlier this week that the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and its strike group, as well as the amphibious ship USS Makin Island, are operating in the South China Sea.The U.S. has no military forces based permanently in the Philippines but sometimes rotates forces to the country under the U.S.-Philippines Visiting Forces Agreement. The recent gathering of Chinese vessels near the Philippines is among moves the United States has criticized as efforts by Beijing to intimidate smaller nations in the region.

21  And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
22  And the children (2 NATIONS IN HER-ISRAEL-ARABS) struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.
23  And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels;(ISRAEL AND THE ARABS) and the one people shall be stronger than the other people;(ISRAEL STRONGER THAN ARABS) and the elder shall serve the younger.(LITERALLY ISRAEL THE YOUNGER RULES (ISSAC)(JACOB-LATER NAME CHANGED TO ISRAEL) OVER THE OLDER ARABS (ISHMAEL)(ESAU)

ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

DANIEL 8:23-25
23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king (EU DICTATOR) of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences,(FROM THE OCCULT) shall stand up.
24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power:(SATANS POWER) and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes;(JESUS) but he shall be broken without hand.DANIEL 11:36-40
36 And the king shall do according to his will;(EU PRESIDENT) and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers,(THIS EU DICTATOR IS A EUROPEAN JEW) nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.
38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces:(HES A MILITARY GINIUS) and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds (CONTROL HEZBOLLAH,AL-QUAIDA MURDERERS ETC) with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many,(HIS ARMY LEADERS) and shall divide the land for gain.
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south(EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR PROTECTING ISRAELS SECURITY) and the king of the north(RUSSIA) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)

Associated Press-Egypt, Tunisia discuss Libya, Ethiopia's disputed dam-Sat, April 10, 2021, 10:34 AM

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s president met Saturday his Tunisian counterpart in Cairo, where they discussed neighboring Libya, and a massive dam Ethiopia is building over the Nile River’s main tributary.Tunisian President Kais Saied arrived in Cairo on Friday for a three-day visit. He was received at the airport by President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi.The two leaders held “extensive and constructive” talks Saturday at Cairo’s Ittihadiya palace, which serves as the Egyptian president's office, Saied said.“We hope that Libya goes down the correct path... There’s no way of dividing Libya," he told a joint news conference with el-Sissi. Libya is a neighbor to Egypt and Tunisia. The country plunged into chaos after a NATO-backed uprising in 2011 toppled longtime ruler Moammar Gadhafi. The two leaders also discussed a massive dam Ethiopia is building on the Nile River’s main tributary. Egypt and Sudan consider the project a major threat if it is filled and operated without a legally binding agreement. The Tunisian president said his country supports Egypt’s position in the yearslong dispute. He said any damage to Egypt’s water security is unacceptable.“We are looking for just solutions, but Egypt’s national security is ours, and Egypt’s position... will be ours.”Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia are deadlocked in a dispute over the dam, and the latest round of talks collapsed Tuesday.

HOME WRECKERS Two monster cyclones force thousands of Australians to evacuate with fears towns could be flattened and flash flooding-Jon Lockett-Apr 10 2021, 11:33 ET

THOUSANDS are being ordered to flee their homes as TWO monster cyclones barrel towards Western Australia - threatening to flatten towns in their wake. Those living on the Exmouth Gulf coast and parts of the Gascoyne Coast are being warned to "take action and stay safe" before Cyclone Seroja makes landfall later this weekend.Cyclone Odette and Cyclone Seroja are expected to rotate around each other-Emergency workers say those in affected areas should stay away from windows, trees, powerlines and storm water drains amid warnings of extreme flash flooding.Cyclone Odette is also expected to bring "strong to gale force" winds warned forecasters as they told people to unplug electrical appliances and make their own sandbags."This is a very serious situation. The potential for widespread devastation is high," state Emergency Services Minister Fran Logan told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)."We hope that we can get through these next few days without loss of life and without serious property damage."We need to work on the basis of worst case scenario," she said, adding that cyclonic winds had not been seen in the area for decades. The region's emergency services minister, Reece Whitby, also described the situation as “very serious”.“So we have a community that’s not used to cyclones, like our communities in the north-west are,” he said. Both tropical storms are now closing in on the coast of Western Australia-Those in affected areas are being told to stay away from windows, trees, powerlines-Those in affected areas are being told to stay away from windows, trees, powerlines“We have properties that aren’t built to withstand cyclones."Australia's Bureau of Meteorology forecasts "destructive winds" with gusts topping 93mph and heavy rains that could cause "significant damage" to coastal communities.Cyclone Seroja is expected to make landfall sometime tomorrow between Carnarvon and Jurien Bay, bringing shocking rainfall, flooding and extremely high tides.Authorities warn weather conditions will change rapidly along the west coast late on Sunday or early Monday with sustained winds well over 90mph now expected."The most likely area to experience destructive wind gusts is on the coast between Geraldton and Denham," an Emergency WA alert said. Those rivers deemed most likely to flood include the Wooramel, Murchison, Greenough and Avon rivers and the Yarra Yarra Lakes District.Acting DFES commissioner Craig Waters revealed there were many holidaymakers in the "impact areas" who may be unaware of the danger heading there way.Cops issued an urgent warning to holidaymakers staying in tents and caravans"If you're in a tent or caravan, you are simply not protected against the damaging winds that may hit the region," he said on Friday.Forecasters say Odette and Seroja are expected to rotate around each other to create the extremely rare Fujiwhara Effect.Extreme weather expert Craig Earl-Spurr said the meteorological phenomenon would make it look like the powerful pair were "dancing" with each other."Because both are trying to throw each other around their own wind fields, as each one moves the wind field moves with it," he told ABC News."Depending on how that then pushes the other [system] around, little changes can become big changes very quickly."He added the storms will be difficult to track because they will be locked in a "tug of war" once the Fujiwhara Effect starts to take place."They can take a full 90-degree turn when they first start to interact with each other," he said.

Associated Press-Ash-covered St. Vincent braces for more volcanic eruptions-KRISTIN DEANE and DÁNICA COTO-Fri, April 9, 2021, 11:59 PM

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent (AP) — People who ignored an initial warning to evacuate the area closest to a volcano on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent raced to get clear Saturday, a day after it erupted with an explosion that shook the ground, spewed ash skyward and blanketed the island in a layer of fine volcanic rock. The eruption Friday of La Soufrière — its first large one since 1979 — transformed the island's lush towns and villages into gloomy, gray versions of themselves. A strong sulfur smell was unavoidable Saturday and ash covered everything, creeping into homes, cars and noses, and obscuring the sunshine that makes the island so popular with tourists.Chellise Rogers, who lives in the village of Biabou, which is in an area of St. Vincent that's considered safe, said she could hear continuous rumbling.“It’s exhilarating and scary at the same time,” she said. “(It’s the) first time I am witnessing a volcano eruption.”Scientists warn that the explosions could continue for days or even weeks, and that the worst could be yet to come.“The first bang is not necessarily the biggest bang this volcano will give,” Richard Robertson, a geologist with the University of the West Indies’ Seismic Research Center, said during a news conference.About 16,000 people have had to flee their ash-covered communities with as many belongings as they could stuff into suitcases and backpacks. However, there have been no reports of anyone being killed or injured by the initial blast or those that followed. Before it blew, the government ordered people to evacuate the most high-risk area around the 4,003-foot (1,220-meter) volcano after scientists warned that magma was moving close to the surface.Ralph Gonsalves, the prime minister of the 32 islands that make up the country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, said on local station NBC Radio that people should remain calm, be patient and keep trying to protect themselves from the coronavirus. He said officials were trying to figure out the best way to collect and dispose of the ash, which covered an airport runway near the capital of Kingstown, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south, and fell as far away as Barbados, about 120 miles (190 kilometers) to the east.“It’s difficult to breathe,” the prime minister said, adding that although the volcano was venting less, a big plume of ash remained. “What goes up, must come down.”Although Gonsalves said it could take up to four months for life to return to normal, he's confident it will.“Agriculture will be badly affected, and we may have some loss of animals, and we will have to do repairs to houses. But if we have life and we have strength — we will build it back better, stronger, together,” he said.People who didn't heed the initial evacuation order hurried to do so Saturday. At least a few ash-covered evacuees escaped in small boats and headed to other parts of the main island, which makes up 90% of the country's total land.About 3,200 people took refuge at 78 government-run shelters, and four empty cruise ships stood ready to take other evacuees to nearby islands, with a group of more than 130 already taken to St. Lucia. Those staying at the shelters were tested for COVID-19, with anyone testing positive being taken to an isolation center.Nearby nations, including Antigua and Grenada, also offered to take in evacuees. On Saturday, some people swept outside their homes and taped their doors and windows shut in the hopes of keeping out the ash.“We’re hearing rumbling from here and witnessed the lightning flashes last night,” said Rukersha Jackson, a 22-year-old marketing specialist who lives with her family a little outside the mandatory evacuation zone. That zone covers the northern third of St. Vincent and is on the opposite side than Kingstown, where most of the country's more than 100,000 people live. The ash has forced the cancellation of several flights, and poor visibility limited evacuations in some areas. Officials warned that St. Lucia to the north and Grenada to the south could get light ash fall, though most of it was expected to head northeast into the Atlantic Ocean.Although the ash can seem scary, it won't harm healthy people in the short term, said Claire Horwell, a professor at Durham University in the United Kingdom who will be analyzing the ash emitted by La Soufrière. She recommended that people wear face masks, long sleeves and pants to avoid irritation.“Volcanic ash looks really scary, and it is really terrifying to people who have never been exposed to it before, but for most healthy people, it is more of a nuisance,” said Horwell, who is also director of the International Volcanic Health Hazard Network. However, she warned that the ash and gases, particularly sulfur dioxide, could affect asthmatics and others with chronic health conditions.La Soufrière last had a sizable eruption in 1979. An eruption in 1902 killed roughly 1,600 people. The volcano had a minor eruption in December, which led regional experts to fly in to analyze the formation of a new volcanic dome and changes to its crater lake, among other things. The eastern Caribbean has 19 live volcanoes, including two underwater near Grenada. One of those, Kick ’Em Jenny, has been active in recent years. But the most active volcano of all is Soufrière Hills in Montserrat. It has erupted continuously since 1995, razing the capital of Plymouth and killing at least 19 people in 1997.___Coto reported from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Ex-CDC Director Robert Redfield floats ‘cover-up’ in China COVID-19 response-By Yaron Steinbuch-March 29, 2021 | 7:55am |in Wuhan was from a laboratory, you know, escaped.Ex-CDC director says he believes coronavirus originated in Wuhan lab

The former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention slammed China’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic — admitting that he could use the word “cover-up” to describe the country’s response to the virus, which has now killed more than 2.7 million people globally.“A year after this pathogen started, we’re now having a critical analysis of where it came from by scientists,” Dr. Robert Redfield told CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta on Sunday in a special report called “COVID WAR: The Pandemic Doctors Speak Out.”“It seems to me that some of the information is people are not being transparent about it. I could use the word ‘cover-up,’ but I don’t know that so I’m not going to speculate that.”China has repeatedly denied any cover-up.The former CDC chief also said he offered to send CDC workers to the country to assist with the outbreak of the deadly bug in January 2020, but the offer was never accepted. He said President Donald Trump even called President Xi Jinping, and that Alex Azar, the Health and Human Services secretary, made requests to China’s minister of health, both to no avail.“I think we could have learned very quickly that we’re dealing with a different beast than the one that everyone had sold us,” Redfield said.Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, waves to residents who are quarantined at home amid COVID-19.Chinese President Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, waves to residents quarantined at home amid COVID-19.The respected virologist also repeated his belief that the pandemic leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China — a controversial theory he cited without evidence — but added that he didn’t think it was intentional.“I still think the most likely etiology of this pathogen in Wuhan was from a laboratory — you know, escaped. Other people don’t believe that. That’s fine,” he told Gupta.“Science will eventually figure it out. It’s not unusual for respiratory pathogens that are being worked on in a laboratory to infect a laboratory worker.”Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, has disputed Redfield’s claims that SARS-CoV-2 was created in a Chinese lab, saying Redfield was merely expressing an “opinion.”However, Fauci did admit he was “always” skeptical about the COVID-19 data being reported out of China.“I always had skepticism about it because of what we went through with SARS,” he told CNN’s Gupta.“China was saying, ‘Oh it’s flu, it’s flu,’ and then the next thing you know, SARS was all over the world — in Canada, in Australia, all over the place. They were not very transparent in the past. It wasn’t outright lying. They just didn’t give you all the information.”Meanwhile, a joint World Health Organization-China study on the origins of the disease says that transmission of the bug from bats to humans through another animal is the most likely scenario and that a lab leak is “extremely unlikely,” according to a draft copy obtained by the Associated Press. The report’s release has been delayed repeatedly, raising questions about whether Beijing was trying to skew the conclusions to prevent blame for the pandemic falling on China. But the AP received a copy Monday from a Geneva-based diplomat from a WHO-member country. It was unclear, however, whether the report might still be changed prior to the official release, though the diplomat said it was the final version.Another diplomat confirmed also getting the report. Both refused to be identified because they were not authorized to release it ahead of publication. The researchers listed four scenarios in order of likelihood for the emergence of the deadly virus.Topping the list was transmission from bats through another animal, which they said was likely to very likely. They evaluated direct spread from bats to humans as likely, and said that spread through “cold-chain” food products was possible but not likely.

WHO report to say animals probable COVID source, lab leak ‘extremely unlikely’Joint WHO-Chinese team probing coronavirus outbreak to conclude disease was probably passed from bats to another animal then humans, also to recommend further study-By Agencies-MAR 29,21-Today, 9:53 am

BEIJING — A joint WHO-China study on the origins of COVID-19 says that transmission of the virus from bats to humans through another animal is the most likely scenario and that a lab leak is “extremely unlikely,” according to a draft copy obtained by The Associated Press. The findings were largely as expected and left many questions unanswered. The team proposed further research in every area except the lab leak hypothesis. The report’s release has been repeatedly delayed, raising questions about whether the Chinese side was trying to skew the conclusions to prevent blame for the pandemic falling on China. A World Health Organization official said late last week that he expected it would be ready for release “in the next few days.”The AP received what appeared to be a near-final version on Monday from a Geneva-based diplomat from a WHO-member country. It wasn’t clear whether the report might still be changed prior to its release. The diplomat did not want to be identified because they were not authorized to release it ahead of publication. The researchers listed four scenarios in order of likelihood. They concluded that transmission through a second animal was likely to very likely. They evaluated direct spread from bats to humans as likely, and said that spread through “cold-chain” food products was possible but not likely. The closest relative of the virus that causes COVID-19 has been found in bats, which are known to carry coronaviruses. However, the report says that “the evolutionary distance between these bat viruses and SARS-CoV-2 is estimated to be several decades, suggesting a missing link.”It said that highly similar viruses have been found in pangolins, but also noted that mink and cats are susceptible to the COVID virus, which suggests they could be carriers. The report is based largely on a visit by a WHO team of international experts to Wuhan, the Chinese city where COVID-19 was first detected, from mid-January to mid-February.The idea of a lab leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology is a hypothesis that was also promoted by former US president Donald Trump’s administration. Beijing has favored the theory that COVID-19 transmission came through frozen meat imported in frozen food packages.Peter Ben Embarek, the WHO expert who led the Wuhan mission, said Friday that the report had been finalized and was being fact-checked and translated.“I expect that in the next few days, that whole process will be completed and we will be able to release it publicly,” he said. The coronavirus pandemic has engulfed the planet, killing more than 2.6 million people and shredding the global economy since the first cases emerged in Wuhan in December 2019.It was only in January 2021 that a team of international experts assembled by the World Health Organization finally visited Wuhan to start a month-long investigation on the ground. The WHO mission was aimed at finding clues as to how the virus originally jumped from animals into humans.

Palestinians get Chinese-donated COVID-19 vaccines-Government-organised visit to the production line of COVID-19 vaccine by Beijing Institute of Biological Products of Sinopharm's CNBG-Mon, March 29, 2021, 11:12 AM

RAMALLAH, West Bank/GAZA (Reuters) - Palestinians on Monday received 100,000 doses of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine donated by China to help broaden an initial campaign to vaccinate medical staff, the elderly and the chronically ill.Palestinian health authorities have been mounting a limited vaccination drive among the 5.2 million people living in the Israel-occupied West Bank and Gaza, using vaccines provided by Israel, Russia, the United Arab Emirates and the global COVAX vaccine-sharing initiative. So far, more than 69,000 Palestinians have received their first dose of the vaccine, and around 7,600 people have had both shots, according to a health ministry statement.Israel has come under international criticism for not doing more to enable Palestinians living in areas it occupies to be inoculated, while its national vaccination drive has been one of the fastest and most efficient in the world. It says it has vaccinated more than 100,000 Palestinian workers with permits to enter the country or Jewish settlements in the West Bank but that the Palestinian Authority bears overall responsibility for inoculations in self-rule areas. After the arrival of the Chinese shipment, Palestinian Health minister Mai Al-Kaila said in the West Bank city of Ramallah that recent restrictions such as curfews and weekend lockdowns had helped to relieve pressure on crowded hospitals."We will continue (vaccinating) our medical staff in the clinics for the public sector and the private sector, dentists and pharmacists, (and) for other categories that have immediate contact with the population," Kaila told Reuters. The Palestinian Authority (PA) plans to cover 20% of Palestinians through the COVAX mechanism. PA officials hope to procure additional vaccines to achieve 60% coverage across the West Bank and in Gaza, which is run by the Hamas Islamist group.Health officials have reported 227,808 coronavirus cases and 2,511 deaths since the pandemic began.(Reporting by Nidal al-Mughrabi and Zainah El-Haroun; Editing by Jeffrey Heller and Raissa Kasolowsky)

Biden’s Passover Message: No Mention of God, Erases Jerusalem, Recommends Desecrating the Holiday-by Video Manager | Mar 26, 2021

In their holiday greetings, President Joe Biden and the First Lady praised the Passover holiday as a time to reflect on the adversity of the COVID pandemic and overcoming racism and prejudice. After praising the holiday in terms that neglected to mention God or the Jews, the president said that Jews would be observing the Biblical commandment of the Seder ritual “on  a screen rather than side-by-side.” It should be noted that as per their religious mandates, it is forbidden for Jews to use electricity on the holy day, and doing so is a desecration. Jill Biden’s claim that Passover is “Jewish but its message is universal” borders on cultural appropriation and replacement theology.  In his two-minute speech, Biden did not mention ‘God’, the Jewish people, or the Exodus from slavery in Egypt. He did explain that “Next year in Jerusalem”, the perennial declaration by the Jews that they will return to their eternal capital in Israel, should be “adapted” to be a COVID motto of “Next year in person.”The address by the Vice President, accompanied by her Jewish-from-birth husband, was no better. Kamala Harris explained that the Passover holiday was about the “resilience of the human spirit in the face of injustice.” She repeated the presidential motto of “Next year in Jerusalem; next year in person.”The “First Gentleman” hosted the White House Seder on Thursday night, two days before the actual holiday.

The Telegraph-New satellite images show North Korea may be preparing to launch ballistic missile submarine-Julian Ryall-Mon, March 29, 2021, 4:46 AM·3 min read

North Korea appears to be preparing to launch a new submarine capable of firing nuclear-capable ballistic missiles, with US and South Korean intelligence “thoroughly monitoring” developments at the North’s Sinpo shipyard.New satellite images of the shipyard, on the east coast of the peninsula, show that a floating dry dock has been positioned alongside the launch quay for the vast construction hall where the submarine is being completed.Analysis of the images by experts from The Stimson Center think tank and posted on the 38 North web site suggest the new vessel “may be nearing completion or is ready to be rolled out and launched in the near future”.The news came as European members of the Security Council requested an urgent meeting on Tuesday to discuss the North’s recent ballistic missile launches, which are in contravention of previous Security Council resolutions, with the possibility of additional sanctions on Pyongyang.Recent events suggest that Pyongyang is returning to the “fire-and-fury” diplomatic strategies of the past.Last week, North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles from its east coast, the first such launches in nearly a year and widely interpreted as Pyongyang’s first challenge to the new administration of US President Joe Biden.Under the terms of United Nations resolutions, North Korea is banned from firing ballistic missiles. On Monday, North Korea accused the United Nations Security Council of “double standards” for criticism of its recent missile launches. In a statement issued through the North’s KCNA news agency, a senior foreign ministry official defended the launches, saying, “Many other countries across the globe are firing all kinds of projectiles."Work to refurbish the Shinpo construction hall was completed in late 2016 and it is believed that assembly of the submarine began shortly afterwards. There are additional signs that the vessel may be ready to launch, the analysts said, including an official visit to the site in July 2019 by Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, during which images of the submarine were released by state media.Storage areas at the site that were as recently as last summer full of components for the craft are also now empty.“We are thoroughly monitoring the situation, with close coordination between the South Korean and US intelligence authorities,” a spokesman for the South Korean Defence Ministry told a press conference on Monday. The North has already conducted a series of tests, from submerged barges, to simulate the firing of a submarine-launched ballistic missile. The 2,720-tonne vessel that it is constructing is believed to be designed to carry three ballistic missiles and would theoretically be capable of sailing into the Pacific to threaten US military facilities in Hawaii or even the mainland of the continental US.The US military has warned that the North deploying such a weapons system would be a significant increase in its offensive capabilities and a new cause for concern, but analysts have told The Telegraph that the threat is more limited as US and Japanese underwater monitoring technology will allow the submarine to be closely tracked.

Rare coin rediscovered during conservation project of Jerusalem museum tower-Tower of David Museum’s team begins to treat structural crack in citadel’s highest viewpoint; conservationists find rare ‘Tyre shekel’ thought to be used for Temple upkeep tax-By Nurit Chinn-MAR 29,21-Today, 1:47 pm

A box of artifacts was rediscovered during a major conservation project to restore the stones of the “Phasael” tower of the Jerusalem citadel’s $40 million renewal project, the Tower of David Museum said Monday.Additionally, the team discovered a box of artifacts, originally excavated in the 1980s. Within it, they uncovered a rare silver coin from the Second Temple period  — a “Tyre shekel.”Two images are imprinted on either side of the coin: On one face is Melqart, the chief god of the Phoenician city of Tyre, and on the other, an eagle. The coins were struck at some point between 125 BCE and the outbreak of the Great Revolt in 66 CE, when they were used to pay a half-shekel tax. Talmudic sources suggest that the Tyrian shekel was likely the only means of paying the head tax at the Temple for its upkeep.Although well-known in ancient and biblical sources, these coins are rare — only a few have been found. The coin will be displayed as part of the museum’s new permanent exhibition next year.During the planning stages of the project, conservationists discovered a large, structural crack running from the top to the bottom of the tower, which soon became the project’s central focus, according to the museum. As part of the team’s renewal project, conservationists cleaned and treated the stones of the tower — dating back more than 2,000 years — with temporary glue to maintain stability.A pipe system was then threaded within the tower, and liquid lime-based mortar injected into the cracks. This process helps the team ascertain how large the cracks are, by examining how far up the mortar rises.“The Tower of David is one of the most important structures in Israel, both in terms of its history and location. The last conservation project at the Tower of David was carried out in the 1980s. Since then, the citadel has been in desperate need of conservation,” said engineering manager Yotam Carmel. The final stage of conservation will be inserting metal anchors into the stones, which will be hidden from sight. The conservation team reported that a new monitoring system is being installed, which will detect movements in the tower’s structure.“In conservation of this kind, traditional materials such as lime plaster and traditional techniques such as stone carving are used in conjunction with high-tech solutions,” Carmel explained. The Phasael Tower is the only tower in the citadel which rises to substantial height, offering striking, panoramic views of Jerusalem. One of three large towers within King Herod’s ancient royal compound, it was the Phasael tower that was first dubbed the “Tower of David.”“Jerusalem touches millions of people throughout the world and I am aware of the huge responsibility in looking after one of its national heritage sites,” said Eilat Lieber, director and chief curator of the Tower of David Museum.“At this holiday time, we are grateful for this unique opportunity to physically preserve the walls and towers of this ancient site – that stood during the time of the Second Temple thousands of years ago, helping to preserve and conserve the site so that it continues to be a beacon in Jerusalem for future generations to come,” said Lieber. The Tower of David Museum chronicles the long, lively history of the city of Jerusalem and launched a massive renovation project when visitor numbers plummeted due to the pandemic.Next year, the museum will reopen to the public — in accordance with future health guidelines — with permanent and temporary exhibitions, archeological tours, and multi-sensory experiences.

US chip giant Nvidia to recruit 600 engineers in Israel to boost AI prowess-The US firm, which completed acquisition of Israel’s Mellanox Technologies in 2020, already employs over 2,400 workers in seven R&D centers including in Yokneam, Tel Aviv, Raanana-By Shoshanna Solomon-MAR 29,21-Today, 12:17 pm

US gaming and computer graphics giant Nvidia, which completed the acquisition of Israel’s Mellanox Technologies Ltd. last year for a massive $7 billion, said it will be employing some 600 hardware and software engineers and chip designers at a variety of levels in Israel to work on its AI-based technologies. The US firm, founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem as a graphics chip company, inventing the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), is today a leader in the field of artificial intelligence.Since its acquisition of Mellanox, a maker of high-speed servers and storage switching solutions used in supercomputers globally, the firm now employs over 2,400 workers in Israel in seven R&D centers, from Yokneam, the HQ of Mellanox, to Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Ra’anana and Beer Sheva in the south. Its R&D activities in Israel are the largest by the firm outside of the US.Gideon Rosenberg, the head of HR at Nvidia Israel, said the firm continues to grow around the world. “We will be happy to recruit workers who have lost their jobs because of the coronavirus crisis or those who are looking for their next big challenge,” he said in a statement. “In the past year not only have we not furloughed or fired any workers, because of corona crisis, but we have continued to recruit hundreds of workers.”Nvidia, with a market cap of $318 billion on the Nasdaq compared to $264 billion for competitor Intel Corp., has replaced the latter as the largest US chip maker, and the second largest in the world, after Taiwan’s TSMC.Both Nvidia and Intel have R&D centers in Israel and compete for the same pool of talent. This competition is set to become even stiffer, as Google enters the fray. The US search engine giant said earlier this month that it is setting up a chip-making team led by a former Intel Israel executive.Nvidia has been active in Israel for the past decade, both selling its processors locally, buying stakes in startups like Zebra Medical, Deep Instinct, and Rocketrick, and setting up its R&D units. In 2016, the US firm set up its first R&D center in Israel and in 2018 set up a center dedicated to artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies, led by Prof. Gal Chechik, a former senior official at Google’s AI division, which focuses on human-machine interaction.

Christians mark Palm Sunday in Jerusalem, Bethlehem as COVID constraints eased-Masked worshipers parade from Mount of Olives to Holy City, in a happier and more populous celebration than last year; Christians attend services in the West Bank-By TOI staff and Agencies-MAR 29,21-Today, 12:07 pm

Hundreds of Christians were able to celebrate the start of Holy Week on Sunday  together in Jerusalem and Bethlehem this year, a year after restrictions prevented in-person gatherings and celebrations.Although the Palm Sunday gatherings were still relatively small and abided by social distancing measures, small congregations of Christians gathered in churches and at religious sites. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem was open to the public and welcomed Roman Catholics to honor the day. Recognized as the place where Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected, the Jerusalem church is one of the holiest Christian sites in the world.Later, worshipers marched in procession from the Mount of Olives to the Old City, following Jesus’ traditional route from 2,000 years ago. Among them was Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.“Last year was a terrible Easter, without people, closed doors. This year is much better, the door is open. We don’t have a lot of people, but we feel more hopeful that things will become better,” Pizzaballa told Reuters news agency.“The message of Easter is life and love, despite all the signs of death, corona, pandemic, whatever, we believe in the power of love and life,” he said.Additionally, Christians gathered for Mass in the Church of the Nativity, in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Jesus.Palestinian Christians clutched olive branches in accordance with Palm Sunday tradition, and sang through their masks.Palm Sunday commemorates the day Jesus traditionally rode into Jerusalem, where he was greeted by cheering crowds bearing palm fronds, according to the New Testament. The day marks the start of Holy Week, which ends next Sunday with Easter.Orthodox Christians mark Palm Sunday next week.A year ago, Palm Sunday fell during Israel’s first lock-down, and celebrations were cancelled altogether, due to COVID-19 restrictions.Although thousands of worshipers usually attend, only a handful of Franciscan monks and Roman Catholic faithful were able to celebrate. They took to the streets of Jerusalem’s Christian Quarter in the Old City to distribute olive branches, travelling door to door and throwing the branches to Christians looking on from their balconies.Last week, the Health Ministry reported Israel’s lowest positive test rate in nearly a year, despite the lifting of restrictions. These improvements are accredited to the country’s vaccination campaign, which saw over half of Israel’s population fully immunized against COVID-19 so far.On the same day, Israel reported the low positivity rate, six Israeli and Palestinian human rights organizations filed a petition with the High Court of Justice to demand Israel act to ensure the vaccination of Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, including by handing over surplus supplies of its own vaccine stocks. The statement said research has shown that there are 27 deaths every day from COVID-19 in the West Bank and Gaza, where the positive test rate for infections stands at some 20 percent.

Thousands at Western Wall for traditional Passover priestly blessing ceremony-In stark contrast to last year, when only a symbolic 10 people were permitted to participate, rolled back virus restrictions allow masses to reach Old City site-By TOI staff-MAR 29,21-Today, 11:04 am

For the first time in a year and a half, thousands of people were able to attend the traditional priestly blessing event at the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem on Monday, made possible by the rolling back of coronavirus restrictions ahead of the Passover festival.Traditionally, tens of thousands of Jewish pilgrims make their way twice a year to the Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City, on the intermediate days of the Passover and Sukkot festivals, with crowds of men and women spilling out from the Wall’s plaza to surrounding areas. As the COVID-19 pandemic reached Israel and the virus spread, mass public events were canceled, and last year, just a symbolic 10 people were permitted to gather at the Western Wall to perform the ceremony, part of the special holiday prayers.During Sukkot, last October, the priestly blessing was held, but with a greatly reduced number of participants due to still high numbers of virus infections — and Israel’s general population under a restrictive lockdown. This year, the Health Ministry permitted the ceremony to go ahead as usual, albeit with congregants divided into pods by clear plastic barriers and on the condition that hygiene rules were maintained. In addition, the blessing event was to be held on two days rather than the customary one, to enable large numbers of participants while limiting crowding. The ceremony, which sees male descendants of the Kohanim priestly caste gather to bestow a benediction, involves the raising of hands to perform the blessing, with those conducting the blessing wrapped in prayer shawls. The Western Wall is the closest spot to the Temple Mount where Jews can pray. Though they may visit the Mount, where the two ancient Jewish Temples stood, Jews are not allowed to pray at the holy site, which is overseen by a Jordanian custodian.Thousands of police and Border Police were deployed in the Old City to secure access routes to the event and the many visitors were expected to the Old City during the day.Vehicle entry to the area and along some surrounding roads was stopped to further enable movement of those arriving at the site, Israel Police said.Police asked the public to avoid driving to the area and instead use public transport.Israel has gradually eased many of the restrictions applied to curb the virus spread. Infection rates plummeted following a third lockdown that lasted over a month and a world-beating inoculation program that already last week reached the milestone of immunizing over half of the population. The government is aiming to vaccinate the entire over-16 population by the end of April.

Oil prices drop with partial refloating of megaship blocking Suez Canal-Both main oil contracts tumble more than 1% after salvage teams free cargo vessel; Asian markets follow Wall Street record as part of strong global rebound-By AFP-MAR 29,21-Today, 11:55 am

HONG KONG, China — Asian markets mostly rose Monday, extending last week’s positive finish and tracking a record-breaking lead from Wall Street, as investors focus on the economic recovery, while oil prices dropped on news that a cargo ship blocking the Suez Canal had been refloated.A below-forecast reading on US prices on Friday provided support as it eased fears that inflation caused by an expected strong global rebound will force central banks to wind back their ultra-loose monetary policies or hike interest rates. The week ahead will provide plenty for traders to get their teeth into including the release of key US jobs data for March and figures on manufacturing activity around the world.US President Joe Biden is also tipped to soon unveil the next leg of his economic recovery plan targeting infrastructure, which some suggest could come in around $3 trillion. That comes just as his recently passed $1.9 trillion stimulus begins to kick in.Still, that is causing some concern as the bill for this will likely be paid for by higher taxes, while there is also a worry that it will add to upward pressure on prices. US Treasury bond yields — a guide to future interest rates — are already sitting around one-year highs.Still, John Bilton, at JP Morgan Asset Management, said: “Inflation remains a persistent concern for investors. We expect headline inflation to be volatile in the second and third quarters, with the potential for some sticker shock as annualized base effects generate optically elevated year-on-year readings.“However, we believe that many of the secular disinflationary forces — globalization, technology adoption, etcetera — continue to anchor core inflation so that even allowing for huge policy stimulus, inflation rates should remain contained in 2021.”‘Double-edged sword’ Wall Street’s three main indexes finished Friday on a strong note, with the Dow and S&P 500 ending at all-time highs. And Asia built on the rally, with Tokyo, Taipei, and Jakarta all up more than one percent, while Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, Manila, Bangkok, and Wellington all enjoyed healthy gains. Sydney dipped, however, as Australian investors were spooked by news that Brisbane had been put into a three-day lockdown.Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson holds a vial of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine during a visit to a vaccination center at the Health and Well-being Centre in Orpington, south-east London, February 15, 2021. (Jeremy Selwyn/Pool Photo via AP)-Optimism was also being supported by the success of vaccine rollouts in the United States and Britain, where infection rates are slowing and officials move to ease some lockdown measures.Even European markets were buoyant, despite the continent’s stuttering inoculation drive and rising infections, thanks to some forecast-beating economic data. But Axi strategist Stephen Innes said this week’s data releases would be crucial to driving further gains.“Given there is so much optimism in the economic reopening narrative baked into the price, it’s hugely important this week’s financial data, at minimum, meets expectations to maintain this ship on an even keel,” he said in a note.“But this could be a double-edged sword for pockets of the market as the combination of stimulus and robust data support equity prices. However, tech faces some challenges if the ‘risk-on’ signal manifests into higher real yields.”Both main oil contracts tumbled more than one percent after salvage teams were said to have finally freed a megaship which has blocked the Suez Canal for almost a week.Maritime services provider Inchcape’s tweet that the Ever Given had been refloated in the early morning means one of the most important routes for global trade and crude shipments can reopen.

Massive container ship blocking Suez Canal freed, partially afloat-Maritime traffic tracking sites say stern of the boat has moved away from the canal’s western bank; unclear when channel will reopen-By Isabel Debre and Samy Magdy-MAR 29,21-Today, 7:44 am

SUEZ, Egypt (AP) — Engineers on Monday “partially refloated” the colossal container ship that continues to block traffic through the Suez Canal, a canal services firm said, without providing further details about when the vessel would be fully set free.Satellite data from MarineTraffic.com showed that the ship’s bulbous bow, once firmly lodged in the canal’s eastern bank, had been wrested partially from the shore — although it remained stuck at the canal’s edge. The ship’s stern had swung around and was now in the the middle of the waterway, the tracking data showed. Although the movement represented the most significant progress yet, the salvage crew urged caution as obstacles loomed.Nearly a week ago, the skyscraper-sized Ever Given got stuck sideways in the crucial waterway, creating a massive traffic jam. The obstruction has held up $9 billion each day in global trade and strained supply chains already burdened by the coronavirus pandemic. At least 367 vessels, carrying everything from crude oil to cattle, were still waiting to pass through the canal, while dozens were taking the alternate route around the Cape of Good Hope at Africa’s southern tip, adding some two weeks to journeys and threatening delivery delays. The partial freeing of the vessel came after intensive efforts to push and pull the vessel with 10 tugboats when the full moon brought spring tide, Leth Agencies said, raising the canal’s water level and hopes for a breakthrough. Videos shared widely on social media appeared to show tugboats in the canal sounding their horns in celebration of the Ever Given being partly wrenched from the shore. However, the rescue team said the ship’s bow remained stuck in the sandy clay at the canal’s edge.“Don’t cheer too soon,” Peter Berdowski, CEO of Boskalis, the salvage firm hired to extract the Ever Given, told Dutch NPO Radio 1. “The good news is that the stern is free but we saw that as the simplest part of the job.”The toughest challenge remained at the front of the ship, he added, noting that workers would struggle to haul the fully laden 220,000-ton vessel over the clay of the canal bank.On Monday morning, an Associated Press journalist could see that the ship’s position had changed — where previously only the ship’s stern was visible, the ship’s side could now be seen.Lt. Gen. Osama Rabei, the head of the Suez Canal Authority, confirmed that the vessel had been partially refloated after responding successfully to “pull-and-push maneuvers.” He said that workers had straightened the vessel’s position by 80% and that the stern had moved 102 meters (334 feet) from the canal bank. The price of international benchmark Brent crude dropped some 2% on the news to just over $63.When high tide returns at 11:30 a.m. local time on Monday, salvage crews will resume their attempts to pull the ship into the middle of the waterway and toward the Great Bitter Lake, a wide stretch of water halfway between the north and south end of the canal, where it will undergo technical examination, he said.Overnight, several dredgers had toiled to vacuum up 27,000 cubic meters of sand and mud around the ship. Another powerful tugboat, Carlo Magno, arrived at the scene to join the work Monday, and the tugs would focus their efforts on the front of the ship, said Berdowski.Although the vessel is vulnerable to damage in its current position, Shoei Kisen Kaisha Ltd., the company that owns the Ever Given, dismissed concerns on Monday, saying that the ship’s engine was functional and it could pursue its trip normally when freed. It wasn’t clear whether the Panama-flagged, Japanese-owned ship, hauling goods from Asia to Europe, would head to its original destination of Rotterdam or if it will need to enter another port for repairs. The ship owners and operators did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the partial refloating of the vessel Monday.Ship operators did not offer a timeline for the reopening of the crucial canal, which carries over 10% of global trade, including 7% of the world’s oil. Over 19,000 ships passed through last year, according to canal authorities. Millions of barrels of oil and liquified natural gas flow through the artery from the Persian Gulf to Europe and North America. Goods made in China — furniture, clothes, supermarket basics — bound for Europe also must go through the canal, or else take a circuitous 5,000 kilometer (3,100 mile) detour around the southern tip of Africa. The unprecedented shutdown has threatened to disrupt oil and gas shipments to Europe from the Middle East and raised fears of extended delays, good shortages and rising costs for consumers.Canal authorities have desperately tried to free the vessel by relying on tugs and dredgers alone, even as analysts warned that 400-meter-long ship, may be too heavy for such an operation. As a window for a breakthrough narrows with high tide receding this week, fears have grown that authorities would be forced to lighten the vessel by removing the ship’s 20,000 containers — a complex operation, requiring specialized equipment not found in Egypt, that could take days or weeks. The salvage team’s next step is dredging beneath the vessel’s bow with high pressure water jets to wrench the ship from the clay, said Berdowski.“If that doesn’t work, then in the end you will have to remove weight and that can only happen by removing containers from the front,” he added. “But that is a process that will take time.”

Israel pleads the fifth: What the press is saying after another indecisive vote-As ballots are counted, pundits are laying out various scenarios based on math that will likely change and may not matter anyway, with many already gearing up for round 5-By Joshua Davidovich-24 March 2021, 3:52 pm

1. The after-math: Had Israel gone through four nearly consecutive elections but learned a valuable lesson about the unreliability of opinion surveys and exit polls, it may have been worth it. Alas, memory is a cruel mistress, so it was as voting drew to a close Tuesday night that TV channels started pumping up viewers for “dramatic” results (Channel 13) and a “tense” vote count ahead (Channel 12).In the end, it appears that the pollsters ahead of the election totally missed out on robust support for Blue and White, which had been written off for months, and then totally dropped the ball on the Ra’am party in exit polls, with all three channels showing the Islamist slate drawing nowhere near enough votes for four seats, let alone the five it is projected to be getting as of this writing. And so it was that Israel went to sleep with Yamina’s Naftali Bennett as kingmaker, based on an analysis of the premature numbers, and woke up with Mansour Abbas holding the key to the castle, or jail cell, depending on how you feel about the never-ending parade of democracy the county has been subjected to.“Compromises on the right or fifth elections,” reads the top headline on Israel Hayom’s print edition, out of date in its attempt to pressure potential Likud partners into lining up behind Benjamin Netanyahu before it even hit the newsstands.Haaretz went as far as devoting its lead editorial to urging Bennett to stay away from Netanyahu.“Bennett, his Yamina colleagues and all the rightists in the ‘anyone but Bibi camp’ have a responsibility to stop Netanyahu, who won’t hesitate to use any means to escape justice. They must prevent the governing coalition of his dreams, which would be the most extremist, nationalist and benighted in Israel’s history.”But by Wednesday morning, Bennett has essentially been unceremoniously shunted into the Netanyahu camp by much of the media, since he doesn’t matter much anymore anyway. Instead Ra’am’s leap over the threshold with most votes counted is the new difference-maker, as news outlets busy themselves with watching the votes trickle in and calculating the seat totals for each party, and the blocs they assume each will fall into.    “Netanyahu has no majority with Bennett,” reads the top headline on Channel 12’s news site.“With nearly 90 percent of votes counted, Netanyahu lacks clear path to majority,” reads the top headline on Haaretz’s website. 2. Married to the Mansour: Well the path is there, but some compromises may have to be forged, and some strange bedfellows made. “If I understand correctly, the coalition of Bibi, [Itamar] Ben-Gvir, [Bezalel] Smotrich and a few more known Arab lovers depends on the support of a party that came out of the Muslim Brotherhood,” tweets ToI contributor Avi Issacharoff. “Enjoy.”Ra’am leader Mansour Abbas tells Kan that “we won’t be in anyone’s pocket, we want to be part of the government, but we won’t sit with those who will put us down.” Ynet points out that Netanyahu made clear in a visit to the studio a week ago that he would never agree to lead a government dependent on Ra’am’s support, as if anything a politician says before an election has any currency the minute the vote ends, as if they were somehow bound by their comments.Channel 12 reports that “Abbas is tearing Likud apart,” after party member Tzachi Hanegbi tells the channel it can reluctantly work with Ra’am, leading Likud colleague Shlomo Karhi to go on the air and declare that such an opinion “is unacceptable. This is a man who has no place in a right-wing government — he throws all Likud’s values into the trash.”“Who is Shlomo Karhi?” responds Hanegbi. “When I leave the studio, I’ll google his name.”Israel Hayom reports that after the Likud rhubarb, party officials have been prohibited from giving interviews.Likud whip Miki Zohar tells Channel 13 that the party needs to explore “all, but all options… to avoid fifth elections.”On Channel 12, Aviv Bushinsky says a fifth election is a near-certainty, since nobody will defect from their camp to join Netanyahu. But writing for the same outlet, fellow strategist Moshe Klughaft sounds an optimistic tone: “In order to prevent a fifth election, someone will have to break a promise. And everyone vowed to avoid a fifth election.” 3. Will you be my friend? In that vein, Likud appears to be gearing up to find anyone who will join it. “Sa’ar come home,” reads the headline on a column in Israel Hayom by Netanyahu groupie Jacob Bardugo, referring to New Hope’s Gideon Sa’ar.Minister Eli Cohen tells Army Radio that the party is “taking Benny Gantz into account. It could actually be a stable government — he could be defense minister, interim prime minister,” he says, apparently in seriousness. But even Likud’s faithful partners may be having second thoughts. “We’re saying ‘Netanyahu,’ but we’re going with the right-wing, the traditional approach. We’re not saying ‘Netanyahu and nobody else,’” UTJ’s Uri Makleb tells Army Radio.Haaretz’s Nir Hasson notes that Netanyahu’s victory speech didn’t seem very victorious. “Netanyahu worked hard to convey a victorious air on election night during Israel’s last three elections. This time, his speech was cautious. He referenced the looming threat of a fifth round of elections again and again, seemingly to pressure the Knesset members he will need to enlist to his cause in the coming days.”“Netanyahu’s best hope given Tuesday’s exit poll results is to establish that 61-seat coalition just to prove that he can, and then fish around among opposition lawmakers for defectors who might be willing to cross over to Likud, thereby growing and stabilizing his narrow coalition. It’s a reasonable strategy, but it depends on two things coming true: He must beat the exit polls and win 61 seats, and he must find willing defectors,” writes ToI’s Haviv Rettig Gur.“Last time, Netanyahu managed to peel none other than his great nemesis Benny Gantz away from the center-left camp in exchange for a rotation deal he never intended to carry out. A year later, that trick won’t work again. His treatment of Gantz makes his search for defectors this time around much more difficult.” 4. A for effort: As for Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid, nobody gives him much of a chance to make any headway, with the options basically seen to be Netanyahu as prime minister or a fifth election. In Haaretz, Uri Misgav praises the anti-Netanyahu bloc’s ability to fight the right to a tie as a “near heroic achievement.”He calls Lapid “a leader and a gentleman, who once again demonstrated responsibility and maturity by lifting his foot from the accelerator that threatened to run down Meretz and Labor…. Lapid’s nobility and sensibility kept his own Yesh Atid party from crossing the 20-Knesset seat barrier that it deserved, in favor of preserving the possibility of preventing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Itamar Ben-Gvir from forming a nightmarish government.”Zman Yisrael’s Shalom Yerushalmi writes, though, that “a government of Bennett, Lapid, Benny Gantz, Avigdor Liberman, Gideon Sa’ar and Merav Michaeli, supported by Ra’am and the Joint List is one big shaky structure. There’s no natural political linkage, and no necessary minimum of shared ideology.”Walla points out that if there are 61 anti-Netanyahu MKs, they can get together without forming a government and push out Netanyahu anyway by appointing a new Knesset speaker who will forge ahead with a law banning a prime minister under indictment. The one thing everyone can agree on is that until all the votes are counted, we won’t know anything. According to Channel 12, the double envelope votes won’t be done being checked until Friday morning.Or, perhaps we can skip the wait and find whatever oracle Ra’am’s pollsters are using. On Twitter, Globes employee Salam Sharkiaa publishes a chart showing internal Ra’am polling from a week earlier projecting it getting 155,342 votes. As of this writing, the party has 155,279 votes.

Yesh Atid leader reportedly set to meet with Joint List-Lapid and Abbas hold talks on forming government, say will continue discussions-Ra’am leader said to demand voting freedom on LGBT matters, freeze on nation-state and Kaminitz laws, Bedouin village recognition, plan to eradicate crime in Arab communities-By TOI staff-28 March 2021, 1:08 pmUpdated at 1:40 pm

Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid met Sunday with Mansour Abbas, whose Islamist Ra’am party has emerged as a potential kingmaker after the fourth inconclusive elections in two years. The meeting took place at Lapid’s home in Tel Aviv and according to the Kan public broadcaster, was facilitated by Taibe mayor Shuaa Masarwa Mansour, who is close to both party leaders.Lapid and Abbas “discussed the possibility of forming a new government. At the end of the meeting, the two sides agreed to continue talks between them in the coming days,” Ra’am said in a statement.According to the Ynet news site, the Islamist party chief presented a number of demands for potential support, including voting freedom on LGBT matters, a freeze on the controversial Jewish nation-state law and the Kaminitz Law (legislation seen as targeting Arab illegal building), as well as recognition of unrecognized Bedouin villages in the Negev.Abbas also said there would also need to be a concrete plan to work to eradicate crime in Arab communities, the report said.Ra’am later denied reports on its demands to Lapid, calling them “rumors.”The meeting came a day after Ayoub Kara, a lawmaker from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, met with Abbas. Kara told Army Radio he received requests from within Likud to visit Abbas, but didn’t specify from who.Abbas told Nas Radio on Sunday that his party was “not inclined more to either [the pro- or anti-Netanyahu] camp. We are the third camp, and are closer to our Arab community and its interests… especially of our people in the Negev, in the unrecognized villages.” He highlighted the surging “violence and crime in the Arab sector,” and the community’s “social and economic difficulties.”Netanyahu repeatedly ruled out relying on Ra’am to form a government in the run-up to the March 23 elections, calling the party anti-Zionist. However, some Likud lawmakers have entertained partnering with Ra’am following last week’s elections, which saw the premier and his right-wing religious allies again fall short of a majority.Ra’am’s backing could grant Netanyahu’s Likud-led bloc a majority if the right-wing Yamina faction also supports it.However, the seemingly improbable possibility of the Islamist party doing so appeared to shrink further after both Ra’am and members of the far-right Religious Zionism party ruled out joining forces. An unsourced Channel 13 report on Saturday said Netanyahu will work in the coming days to try to get Religious Zionism head Bezalel Smotrich and his far-right faction partner Itamar Ben Gvir to soften their stance toward Ra’am.The meeting between Lapid and Abbas came as the so-called “change bloc” in the incoming Knesset was holding intensive discussions as it attempts to create a blueprint for an alternative government to one led by Netanyahu — but such efforts were marred by fighting over who should lead the bloc, as well as radically differing ideologies and political red lines that could doom any such effort from the onset.According to Hebrew-language media reports on Sunday, Lapid has reached out to the Arab-majority Joint List and is expected to hold meetings with the faction in the coming days.On Friday, Lapid met with Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman for the first time since Tuesday’s election to discuss ways to cooperate. The two agreed to remain in touch and meet again soon, a spokesperson for Yesh Atid said.Meanwhile, in a statement Friday, Yamina leader Naftali Bennett said he’d spoken over the past two days with the heads of all non-Arab parties from the right and the left, wished them a happy Passover, and “stressed the need to take responsible, principled action in order to release Israel from chaos and allow it to return to functioning properly as soon as possible.”According to a report by Channel 12 news Friday night, one proposal on the table was for Lapid and Bennett to lead a “national government of healing” for a limited period of time, possibly a year, during which time the two would rotate the premiership between them. The report said such a coalition would be a minority in the Knesset, composed of the 52 seats of Yesh Atid, Blue and White, Yamina, Labor, New Hope and Yisrael Beytenu, supported from the outside — or at least not opposed — by Meretz and the majority-Arab parties. This government would ensure the passage of a state budget for the first time since 2018 and aim to stabilize the country and the economy in the wake of the political chaos and coronavirus pandemic, before a new election is called. The proposal also suggests that once such a government is formed, it will seek to bring in the ultra-Orthodox parties who currently remain resolutely in Netanyahu’s camp — apparently assuming Haredi lawmakers’ loyalty to the premier will be tested once he and they are no longer running the government. However, the report noted that such a plan requires parties to jump through many hoops, some of them potentially insurmountable — chiefly the need for right-wing parties Yamina and New Hope to agree to form a government with the tacit support of the Arab, non-Zionist parties, a move that could be political suicide for those parties’ leaders among their right-wing base.New Hope leader Gideon Sa’ar and Yamina’s Bennett met at the latter’s home to discuss potential cooperation, Channel 12 reported. Sa’ar has vowed not to join a Netanyahu-led government, while Bennett has not done so but is widely seen as preferring not to ally with the prime minister. The report said Sa’ar made it clear to Bennett that he would not fight him for leadership of the “change bloc.”Associates of Bennett told Channel 13 on Friday that there was no chance he’d abandon Netanyahu’s bloc unless he is prime minister first in the new government, and not Lapid. But the network also said Lapid is currently seeking to get a majority of votes from party leaders when they head to give President Reuven Rivlin their recommendations on April 5, and to be the first to be given a crack at forming a government.Meanwhile, the network said Netanyahu, despite winning only 59 seats for his bloc of supporters (if Bennett’s Yamina party is included in the count), is making great efforts to woo former Likud MK Sa’ar over to his side and clinch a majority. Through emissaries, the premier offered his longtime rival a deal by which he will resign after one more year in power and hand the premiership to him.Sa’ar, noting the similarity to Netanyahu’s 2020 power-sharing deal with Blue and White’s Benny Gantz, one Netanyahu avoided honoring, was said to respond wryly: “Tell him only on the condition that Deri is a guarantor.”Minister of the Interior Aryeh Deri, head of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, was famously reported to have vowed to Gantz that he’d ensure Netanyahu honored their coalition deal, only to eventually renege on that promise.

U.S. Supreme Court takes up bid to revive defense of Kentucky abortion law-Lawrence Hurley-Mon, March 29, 2021, 10:00 AM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a bid by Kentucky's Republican attorney general to defend a restrictive state law, struck down by lower courts, that abortion rights advocates have said would effectively ban the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy.Attorney General Daniel Cameron has asked the justices to let him intervene in defense of the Republican-backed law after Democratic Governor Andy Beshear's administration dropped the case. The Supreme Court is being asked to decide only that narrow issue, and not whether the law violates Supreme Court precedents holding that women have a right to obtain an abortion. Abortion opponents are hopeful that the Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, will curb abortion rights.Abortion rights advocates have said the 2018 law would effectively ban an abortion method called dilation and evacuation - the most common form of abortion performed during the second trimester of a pregnancy. The law was passed by Kentucky's legislature and signed by a Republican governor, but Beshear subsequently was elected and decided not to continue to defend the measure after the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck it down in June 2020. The 6th Circuit later that month declined to allow Cameron to intervene to defend the law.The 6th Circuit ruling came just five days before the Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision struck down a Louisiana law that imposed restrictions on doctors who perform abortions. Cameron wants to be able to ask the 6th Circuit to reconsider its ruling against the Kentucky law in light of language contained in the Louisiana decision. The Kentucky law was one of a growing number passed by Republican legislators at the state level imposing a variety of restrictions on abortion. The state's previous governor, Republican Matt Bevin, had defended the law.(Reporting by Lawrence Hurley; Editing by Will Dunham)2
