Tiny Samaritan community marks Passover sacrifice as numbers grow-Biblical ritual held annually at West Bank mountaintop ceremonial ground provides participants young and old with hope for future of ancient community-By Mike Smith-19 April 2019
MOUNT GERIZIM, West Bank (AFP) — Men and boys dressed in white led the sheep to their fate, pushing and dragging them to a narrow, stone-lined trench on the mountaintop ceremonial ground. The tiny Samaritan community was marking Passover in their holiest place — Mount Gerizim, overlooking the West Bank city of Nablus. As twilight approached and the sacrificial ceremony neared, hundreds of worshipers recited prayers together, their voices rising in unison, while tourists watched from nearby.Blades were at the ready. While Jews no longer offer sacrificial lambs during Passover, a festival marking their ancestors’ liberation from slavery in Egypt, Samaritans keep the tradition alive on their holy mountain. With many in white ceremonial dress and red fez hats, the Samaritans this year sacrificed around 60 sheep then roasted them in accordance with the process explained in the Book of Exodus.According to tradition, the sacrifice and command to smear blood on their door frames allowed for the plague of the first-born to pass over the houses of the Israelites. On Thursday night, when the prayers were finished, the blades went to work on the sheep.Immediately afterward, splotches of blood were smeared on foreheads, including on the children — a newer version of smearing it on door posts.Sharon Yehoshua, a 36-year-old mother of two who planned to help salt the meat afterwards, said the ceremony was the “highlight of the year.”“It’s a very special day for all of the Samaritans,” she said.Population growing-Only around 800 Samaritans remain in their two communities, one on the mount and one in the Israeli city of Holon, near Tel Aviv. All are expected to return to the holy place to mark Passover. They trace their lineage to the Israelites whom Moses led out of slavery in Egypt and who established themselves in the biblical northern kingdom of Israel, known as Samaria. They believe their high priest to be a descendant of Aaron, the brother of Moses. Many Christians recognize the name through the parable of the Good Samaritan.Benyamim Tsedaka, 74, believes his generation is the 125th since the biblical Joshua, the head of the Israelites after Moses. The scholar said the Samaritan community had faced various pressures over the generations in the turbulent Middle East and their numbers plummeted. But with the help of increased inter-marriage and relative stability in their two communities, their population is now growing.Tsedaka said the number of sheep sacrificed made him hopeful for the future.“I remember the community offering only seven,” he said. Each family is meant to sacrifice one, though those who cannot afford it join together with other families to do so.“Our lowest number was in March 1919, when there were left in the world only 141 individuals,” Tsedaka said.-‘Remarkable’-The Samaritans occupy a particular place between the Israelis and the Palestinians, part of neither community but living among them. Many outsiders are unaware of their presence, said Shuki Friedman, who specializes in religion and state issues at the Israel Democracy Institute think tank.“They grow by the years but not dramatically,” he said, adding that “there is a real danger” of them being completely assimilated and losing their distinct identity. But he said it was “really remarkable” that the community has kept its traditions alive for 2,500 years.Samaritans say their customs are even older than that.As they celebrated Thursday night, they exchanged hugs and kisses along with holiday wishes. Many of those wearing white were now splattered with blood.Nine fire pits with wood from olive trees inside burned nearby, awaiting the meat from the sheep that were being cleaned.“When you’re one-year-old and 100 you must come here,” said Yiftah Tsedaka, 52.Another attendee nearby, Itzik Tsedaka, 45, agreed.“You can’t be a Samaritan and skip this ceremony.”
Official: Israel to grant Gaza Christians permits to visit Jerusalem for Easter-Even if travel documents are issued it is unclear whether they will be able to make it to Holy City by Sunday, though many could travel later in the month for Orthodox Easter-By Adam Rasgon-TOI-19 April 2019
Israel has decided to approve hundreds of permits for Palestinian Christians living in the Gaza Strip to visit East Jerusalem and the West Bank for Easter, an Israeli official said on Friday, two days before the holiday.“Following the recommendations of the security establishment, during this coming Easter, hundreds of Christians from the Gaza Strip will be allowed to visit Judea and Samaria and East Jerusalem and to go abroad,” the Israeli official, who requested anonymity, said in a text message to reporters, referring to the West Bank by its biblical names. It was unclear whether Palestinian Christians in Gaza wishing to arrive in East Jerusalem and the West Bank before Sunday would be able to do so. A number of sites revered by Christians are located in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Most Christians will celebrate Easter, a holiday marking Jesus’s resurrection, on Sunday, but Orthodox Christian communities, who follow a different calendar, will mark it on April 28. Many Christians in Gaza belong to the Greek Orthodox community, which will celebrate the holiday on the latter date.Travel requests have been filed for both dates. The comments came as thousands of Christian pilgrims and clergy members marched through the ancient stone alleys of Jerusalem’s Old City, retracing Jesus’s path to crucifixion in observance of Good Friday.Asked specifically how many permits Israeli authorities would issue for Palestinian Christians in Gaza to visit East Jerusalem and the West Bank and whether Israel would arrange for them to exit the coastal enclave before the holiday, the Israeli official did not respond.A Palestinian Authority official in charge of requesting permits from the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the Defense Ministry body responsible for liaising with Palestinians, said he had not been informed of the Israeli decision.“All I know about is 200 permits to travel abroad,” the official, who asked to remain nameless, said in a phone call. “I have not been informed of anything else.”Earlier this week, COGAT announced that it would issue 200 permits for Palestinian Christians in the coastal enclave over the age of 55 to travel abroad through the Israeli-controlled Allenby border crossing between the West Bank and Jordan for Easter, but made no mention about whether it would allow Christians in the Strip to visit the East Jerusalem and the West Bank.Asked on Friday if Israeli authorities would now open the Erez crossing, the sole pedestrian passageway between Israel and Gaza, to allow Palestinian Christians in the Strip to travel to East Jerusalem and West Bank by Sunday, COGAT did not respond.COGAT announced on Thursday that it would be closing all crossings between Israel and Gaza starting early Friday morning for a week for the Passover holiday. However, the Defense Ministry body said it would allow “humanitarian, medical and exceptional cases” to pass through.Israel maintains heavy restrictions on the movement of people and goods into and out of the Gaza Strip. Israeli officials hold that the limitations on movement aim to prevent terror groups from transferring weapons into the coastal enclave.According to a February 2018 report issued by the Palestinian Authority Central Bureau of Statistics, 1,138 Palestinian Christians live in Gaza. Almost all of them live in Gaza City and many of them have family members in the West Bank.Elias al-Jalda, a Christian activist in Gaza, said Israel should inform Palestinians in Gaza whether they have permits to travel to the West Bank or East Jerusalem several days before the holiday.“People here need a few days to prepare to travel. Israel should make sure it lets us know well in advance of the holiday whether we have permits to go to Jerusalem, the West Bank or elsewhere. When Easter happens is known; so it should not be complicated to prepare the permits ahead of time,” Jalda said in a phone call.He said even if Israel immediately issues the permits, they unlikely will manage to prepare themselves to go in time. However, Jalda said Orthodox Christians should have sufficient time if informed soon.Agencies contributed to this report.
Netanyahu in Passover message: Israel now admired by ‘the Arab and Muslim world’-In video marking festival of freedom, prime minister says he’s ‘persistently and systematically turning Israel into a rising global power’-By TOI staff-19 April 2019
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu touted what he said were burgeoning ties between Israel and the Arab and Muslim world Friday in a Passover video he released on his social media platforms hours before the start of the Jewish festival.“Citizens of Israel, Jewish brothers and sisters around the world. Each year on Seder night, I am deeply moved. Passover touches upon the roots of our national identity. Thousands of years ago we raised the banner of freedom and liberty,” he said of the Jewish festival that celebrates the Jewish people’s liberation from slavery and Exodus from Egypt.“We went from slavery to freedom, from subjugation to independence. We began our long journey from Egypt to our home — Zion and Jerusalem,” he said in the Hebrew clip.Presenting the Jewish state’s “incredible achievements by any standard,” Netanyahu said that he is “persistently and systematically turning Israel into a rising global power. Specifically, “a country admired by many other countries, including in the Arab and Muslim world.”Each year at the Seder table, I am deeply moved. Passover touches upon the roots of our national identity. Thousands of years ago we raised the banner of freedom and liberty. We went from slavery to freedom, from subjugation to independence.Happy Passover! pic.twitter.com/r2IAWrDqUm-— PM of Israel (@IsraeliPM) April 19, 2019-Netanyahu has made diplomatic outreach to Africa, Latin America and the Far East a cornerstone of his foreign policy, and has pushed for more open ties with moderate Arab states.Israel has formal relations only with Egypt and Jordan, but its relations with some Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, indeed appear to have recently warmed as part of a tacit alliance against Iran.In October, Netanyahu was welcomed to Oman by the country’s longtime ruler Sultan Qaboos bin Said. That same month Culture and Sport Minister Miri Regev traveled to Abu Dhabi for the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam judo tournament, and the Israeli national anthem was played for the first time in the Arabian peninsula after Sagi Muki won gold in the under-81 kilogram category.Meanwhile, the Palestinians feel increasingly sidelined, fearing Israel, Gulf states and the US plan to strike a deal behind their backs about the future of lands they seek for a future state.Passover, which lasts seven days, begins on Friday night when Jews around the world mark the festival with the seder holiday feast.
The Latest: Crown of Thorns presented at Paris service-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-April 19, 2019
PARIS — The Latest on the fire that ravaged Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris (all times local):11:35 p.m.The Crown of Thorns relic saved from the fire at Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral has been presented to worshippers at special Good Friday ceremony. Many believe the crown was placed on the head of Jesus at his crucifixion. It is made of rushes wrapped into a wreath and tied with gold filament. Parts of the purported crown are also held in other locations.A public veneration of the crown is normally part of the ceremonies leading up to Easter at Notre Dame. But because of this week's devastating fire at Notre Dame, the crown was shown at a service Friday evening at the nearby Saint-Sulpice Church.Firefighters rescued the crown and other treasures held in the 12th-century Notre Dame as its spire collapsed and roof burned away Monday. The cathedral's rector told The Associated Press that nothing inside was damaged except for the altar. Patrick Chauvet said Good Friday this year was special "because I believe that from this suffering there will be a renaissance."___10 p.m.Architects and construction workers have now stabilized the damaged structure of Notre Dame cathedral, four days after a fast-spreading fire ravaged the iconic Paris building.A fire brigade spokesman says firefighters will leave the site sometime Friday night.Lt. Col. Gabriel Plus told The Associated Press that "there is no more risk the edifice's walls could fall down." He says firefighters have been able to cool down the walls and debris that fell inside the cathedral from the roof.He says "it's a miracle that the cathedral is still standing, and that all the relics were saved," he said. The fire Monday night burned through the network of enormous centuries-old oak beams supporting the monument's vaulted stone ceiling, dangerously weakening the building.___6:15 p.m.The Paris fire brigade spokesman says Notre Dame Cathedral has been secured and firefighters will leave the site on Friday night.Lt. Colonel Gabriel Plus told The Associated Press that "there is no more risk the edifice's walls could fall down."He added that firefighters have been able to cool down the cathedral's walls and the debris from the roof that fell inside the cathedral.Plus said "It's a miracle that both chapels on the side and the crypt remain untouched."The cathedral in the heart of Paris was devastated by a fire Monday evening that raced through its massive wooden roof. Firefighters have been credited with preventing the building from burning to the ground in a "chain-reaction collapse" by aggressively protecting the wooden supports in its twin medieval bell towers from the flames.___5:40 p.m.The UN's cultural agency said the reconstruction of Notre Dame must protect the universal value of the site but that it doesn't mean the cathedral must be rebuilt exactly as it was.A delegation from UNESCO, which oversees global heritage issues, met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Friday.According to Macron's office, UNESCO representatives said they were ready to help with the reconstruction of Notre Dame, especially by providing technical expertise.UNESCO director-general Audrey Azoulay said the monument's "integrity and authenticity" must be respected, since it's a World Heritage site, but that doesn't mean the site must remain unchanged. The comments were reported by Macron's office.UNESCO formally recognizes the right of each generation to participate in humanity's heritage "including through adaptation to natural and historic processes of change and transformation" and "new possibilities offered by evolving technologies."___4:15 p.m.The Paris prosecutor's office is urging those making donations for the reconstruction of Notre Dame cathedral to be careful about scams aimed at extorting their money. It says the Fondation du Patrimoine, one of the organizations collecting funds to rebuild the iconic monument, has filed a lawsuit after individuals "fraudulently" solicited money using its name through emails or phone calls. The Paris prosecutor's office has opened an investigation centred on the charge of conspiracy to defraud.Officials say $1 billion in donations has already been pledged to rebuild Notre Dame, sent in by people ranging from ordinary citizens to billionaires.___2:25 p.m.Top French art conservation officials say the works inside Notre Dame suffered no major damage in the fire that devastated the cathedral, and the pieces have been removed from the building for their protection.Isabelle Palot-Frossat of the centre for research at the French Museums said neither fire, nor soot, nor water reached inside the cathedral's walls. The fierce fire Monday evening was concentrated on the cathedral's roof and destroyed its famous spire.Judith Kagan of the French Culture Ministry said that many of the artworks span several meters (yards) across and were being transported to a secure location.Frank Riester, France's culture minister, said the cathedral's vaulted ceiling is still "in an emergency situation." Officials will have to carefully remove the debris that is weighing it down, cover the ceiling against the elements and dismantle the scaffolding that had topped the cathedral when it caught fire.He said the building survey "will take several days or weeks."— This item has corrected the quote on soot to Isabelle Palot-Frossat.___1:25 p.m.The 180,000 bees kept in hives in Notre Dame Cathedral that were thought to have perished in this week's fire have been discovered alive. The monument's beekeeper, Nicolas Geant, told the AP Friday: "I am so relieved. I saw satellite photos that showed the three hives didn't burn. I thought they had gone with the cathedral."Geant has looked after the bees since 2013 when they were installed on the lead roofing of the famed monument as part of a city-wide initiative to boost declining bee numbers.Geant explained the insects have no lungs. Instead of killing them, the carbon dioxide in the smoke puts them into a sedated state. He said when bees sense fire they "gorge themselves on honey" and protect their queen. He said European bees never abandon their hives.___1:05 p.m.The rector of Notre Dame says a "computer glitch" might have caused the fire that ravaged a large part of the cathedral this week.Speaking during a meeting of local business owners, Patrick Chauvet did not elaborate on the glitch, adding that "we maybe find out what happened in two or three months."Le Parisien newspaper has reported that investigators are looking at whether the fire could have been linked to a computer glitch, or related to the temporary elevators used in the renovation work, among other things.Chauvet added that investigators are still unable to access the cathedral's nave for security reasons.___9:35 a.m.French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting officials from the United Nations' cultural agency, where he is expected to set out ideas for the reconstruction of Notre Dame Cathedral. He will meet with state delegates from UNESCO, which oversees global heritage issues, in the Elysee Palace Friday.Macron's push for a speedy rebuild indicates he wants the fire-ravaged monument's reconstruction to be part of his legacy, and is seizing the moment to try to move on from the divisive yellow vest protests. His initial wish for it to be rebuilt in just five years was met with incredulity.Macron had been due to deliver an uneasy speech Monday setting out long-awaited plans to quell anti-government protests that have marred his presidency, but it was postponed after the fire broke out.___Read and watch all AP coverage of the Notre Dame fire at https://apnews.com/NotreDameCathedralThe Associated Press.
On Good Friday, pope hears harrowing stories of human trafficking-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Philip Pullella-April 19, 2019
ROME (Reuters) - Pope Francis led Good Friday services dedicated to the victims of human trafficking and the plight of migrants, denouncing leaders with "armored hearts" who exploit their plight for political gain.Francis, marking his seventh Easter season as Roman Catholic leader, presided at a traditional Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) service at Rome's Colosseum, attended by thousands of people holding candles. The meditations read out by speakers during the 14 "stations of the cross" which commemorate the last hours of Jesus' life were written by Sister Eugenia Bonetti, an 80-year-old Italian nun who has won multiple awards for her work with trafficked women and children. At the end of the service, Francis read a prayer in which he spoke of the poor, the hungry, the elderly, abused children and the environment. In it, he spoke of "the cross of migrants who find doors closed because of fear and hearts that are armored by political calculation".Francis has made defense of migrants a key feature of his pontificate and has clashed over the immigration with politicians such as U.S. President Donald Trump and Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Salvini who leads the anti-immigrant League party and has closed Italy's ports to rescue ships operated by charities. Each year, the pope entrusts the writing of the meditations to a different person or group. Bonetti's were among the most graphic and emotional ever read at the service.Francis listened intently as three speakers read Bonetti's meditations about migrants being set on fire, dying in the desert or drowning at sea and ending up in nameless coffins. One of Bonetti's meditations read:"Let us think of all those children in various parts of the world who cannot go to school but are instead exploited in mines, fields and fisheries, bought and sold by human traffickers for organ harvesting, used and abused on our streets by many, including Christians ...," She wrote of seeing "men in luxury cars lined up to exploit" young woman forced into prostitution shortly after they arrive in Italy, where many African migrants wash up, hoping for a fresh start only to be snared by traffickers and pimps."Men, women and children are bought and sold like slaves by the new traders in human lives," she wrote "How many people are growing rich by devouring the flesh and blood of the poor?"The 82-year-old leader of the world's 1.3 billion Roman Catholics will lead an Easter vigil service on Saturday night and on Easter Sunday will read the traditional "Urbi et Orbi" (To The City and The World) message.(Reporting By Philip Pullella; editing by Diane Craft)

North Korea slams Bolton's 'dim-sighted' call for sign of denuclearization-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-April 21, 2019
SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea has criticized U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton's "nonsense" call for Pyongyang to show that it’s serious about giving up its nuclear weapons, the second time it has criticized a leading U.S. official in less than a week.U.S. President Donald Trump has said he is open to a third summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, but Bolton told Bloomberg News on Wednesday there first needed to be "a real indication from North Korea that they've made the strategic decision to give up nuclear weapons"."Bolton, national security adviser of the White House, in an interview with Bloomberg, showed above himself by saying such a nonsense," North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui told reporters when asked about his recent comments, the Korean Central News Agency said on Saturday."Bolton's remarks make me wonder whether they sprang out of incomprehension of the intentions of the top leaders of the DPRK and the U.S. or whether he was just trying to talk with a certain sense of humor for his part, with its own deviation," she said, referring to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, North Korea's official name."All things considered, his word has no charm in it and he looks dim-sighted to me."The North Korean vice minister also warned that there would be no good if the United States continued "to throw away such remarks devoid of discretion and reason".North Korea said on Thursday it no longer wanted to deal with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and that he should be replaced in talks by someone more mature, hours after it announced its first weapons test since nuclear talks broke down.(Reporting by Joori Roh, Josh Smith; Editing by Nick Macfie)
Syria's Assad discusses peace talks, Tartus port with Russians-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-April 21, 2019
BEIRUT/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met senior officials from his strongest ally Russia in Damascus on Friday and Saturday to discuss upcoming peace talks, renting out Tartus port and trade between the two countries, state media in Syria reported.Russia has helped Assad's forces to take back most of the country but the eight-year-long war continues. Swathes of the northeast and northwest are out of his control, while sanctions and a fuel shortage are constricting the economy.Moscow has pushed for a political process involving talks on a new constitution and elections as a way to end the conflict, but Assad has played down the possibility that the Turkey-backed opposition or foreign countries might participate.Russia's Foreign Ministry said late on Friday that Assad had met Moscow's Syria envoy Alexander Lavrentiev, Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin and several Russian Defence Ministry officials. However, while it said they had discussed the formation of a constitutional committee, which Syria's opposition last year agreed to join under U.N. auspices after a Russian-hosted peace conference, Syrian state media did not mention it.Syria's official SANA news agency said meetings had focused on the next round of talks in Kazakhstan involving Syria, its allies Russia and Iran, and the rebels' backer Turkey.Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in Syria's war and about half the pre-conflict population of 22 million has been displaced.Russia launched a military intervention to support Assad in 2015, turning the tide of the fighting in his favor. On Saturday, SANA said Assad had met Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov to discuss trade and economic cooperation, "particularly in the fields of energy, industry and increasing trade".CONTRACT "WITHIN A WEEK"-TASS news agency cited Borisov as saying that a contract on renting Tartus port by Russia was expected to be signed soon.In 2017, the Russian parliament ratified a deal with Damascus to cement Russia's foothold in the country and pave the way for establishing a permanent military presence at naval and air bases in Syria. It was also agreed that Russia would expand and modernize the port's supply of facilities for its fleet.Borisov said Russia now hoped to sign the deal to rent the port within a week, according to TASS."We have advanced quite substantially on this issue and hope that the contract will be signed within a week and the port Tartus will be transferred for the Russian business usage," he was quoted as saying. The Tartus naval facility is Russia's only naval foothold in the Mediterranean.SANA news agency said Assad and Borisov discussed mechanisms to overcome obstacles including those "resulting from the sanctions which countries against the Syrian people imposed on Syria".The United States and European Union imposed tough sanctions on Syria early in the conflict over what they described as atrocities carried out by the government, which it denies. This week, Syrian state media reported that a fuel shortage which has resulted in rationing and long queues at petrol stations came in the context of difficulty in importing fuel and the halting of a credit line from Iran.Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Mouallem said on Saturday that "Syria is always coordinating with Iran".(Reporting by Angus McDowall and Vladimir Soldatkin, Editing by Alison Williams and Helen Popper)
EU's Juncker: there is still a risk of no-deal Brexit despite delay-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Foo Yun Chee-April 21, 2019
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - There is a still a concern that Britain may leave the European Union without a deal to smooth the way, the bloc's chief executive said on Saturday, urging Britain to take advantage of a six-month delay to work out the details of its departure.European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker made the comments in an interview with German newspaper FUNKE Mediengruppe, a week after EU leaders gave Britain six months more to exit the EU."Nobody knows how Brexit will end. This is creating great uncertainty. There is still a fear that there will be a hard Brexit without any withdrawal treaty arrangements," Juncker said, citing the long-term negative impact on Europe's economy.Even though the extension to Oct. 31 offers little clarity on when, how or even if Brexit will happen, Britain should use the time wisely, he said."I hope that the British will make use of this time and not waste it again. We cannot keep on putting off the withdrawal date indefinitely. The best solution would be for the British to adopt the Withdrawal Agreement during the extra time that has been agreed," Juncker said. The withdrawal deal negotiated by Prime Minister Theresa May with the EU has been rejected three times by the British parliament.Juncker, who is scheduled to meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the G20 meeting in Osaka in June, predicted a "lively discussion" ahead."The last discussion lasted 6 hours and it is good that you were not there," Juncker said, referring to raised voices at his last talks with Trump.Trade relations between the United States and the EU have soured in recent months after Washington hit the bloc with tariffs and threatened more. Asked about possible new tariffs ahead of the G20 meeting, Juncker counseled patience. He called on Germany and other countries to spend more to boost growth in the bloc, which is expected to see a slowing economy, a day after German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz ruled out taking on new debt to stimulate his country's anemic growth."However, Germany should use its financial leeway to further reduce public debt and boost investment. This also includes eliminating bureaucratic hurdles," Juncker said.He also cautioned there was a risk of foreign manipulation around next month's European Parliament elections where eurosceptic groups are expected to gain ground. With Britain expected to take part, the proportion of the assembly's seats held by eurosceptics is seen rising to 14.3 percent from around 10 percent currently, according to the compilation of national polls commissioned by the European Parliament."I can see an attempt to rig the European Parliament elections. This comes from several quarters, and not only from outside the EU. States within the EU are also seeking to direct the will of voters in a particular direction with fake news," Juncker said, adding that the Commission was ready to deal with the issue.(Reporting by Foo Yun Chee; Editing by Frances Kerry)

Vulnerable House Democrats tread carefully in wake of Mueller report-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Joseph Ax-April 21, 2019
(Reuters) - Vulnerable House Democrats, mindful of President Donald Trump's continued strength among Republican voters, are using caution in how they respond to the special counsel's report, which detailed Trump's efforts to thwart the investigation into Russian efforts to help him win the White House.More than 30 Democratic representatives, many of whom are in their first term, represent districts that supported Trump in 2016. The party's chances of keeping control of the U.S. House of Representatives likely hinge its ability to defend those seats. In the report released on Thursday, Special Counsel Robert Mueller said Trump may have obstructed justice and portrayed a president bent on stopping the probe into Russian meddling. But Mueller stopped short of concluding that a crime was committed, leaving it to Congress to make its own determination. That is putting pressure on congressional Democrats to decide whether to pursue impeachment charges against Trump, whose continued popularity with his Republican base could weigh heavily on Democratic lawmakers in swing districts. Those incumbent Democrats may have to strike a delicate balance on the campaign trail next year. Too much bashing of the president could turn off voters more interested in kitchen-table issues and motivate Trump sympathizers to rally around him.Hours after Mueller's findings were released, Abby Spanberger, a Democratic congresswoman from Virginia, held a town hall that saw virtually no discussion of the report. She knocked off a Republican incumbent last year in a district that favored Trump by more than 6 percentage points in 2016.The 39-year-old representative told reporters before the event that she was more interested in preventing Russia from attacking the electoral process than in "re-litigating" the 2016 presidential contest."Regardless of what actions the president did or didn't take ... understanding in far greater detail the aggression of a foreign adversary nation against our election's infrastructure should ideally help us avoid such circumstances in the future," she said.Other Democrats facing reelection in swing districts also reacted cautiously, saying they would reserve judgment until after reading the voluminous report, or emphasizing the threat of Russian interference rather than Trump's behavior."If the conclusion remains that there is no further criminal wrongdoing, I think we should, as a country, move on and ensure that Russia cannot interfere again," said Ben McAdams, a freshman Utah Democrat in a Republican-leaning district.INTERNAL DEBATE-The 448-page report's release has sparked an internal debate within the Democratic Party on how to move forward.Party leaders played down talk of impeachment, even as they said they would pursue a full, unredacted copy of the report and bring Mueller himself to Capitol Hill to testify under oath. At the same time, some liberal members of the caucus, including Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez of New York, expressed support for starting an impeachment inquiry.U.S. Representative Cheri Bustos, the Illinois Democrat who chairs the party's House campaign arm, set the tone for her most endangered colleagues on Thursday. In a statement, she said she would read the report carefully, then pivoted to other issues."As we review this report, I also remain committed to continuing my efforts to bring down the cost of health care, invest in our infrastructure and clean up the mess in Washington," Bustos said.Haley Stevens, a Michigan Democrat who won her first term last fall in a district that voted for Trump in 2016, told Reuters many Democrats were elected because "voters want checks and balances and a return to good government and government we can trust."Still, speaking after a town hall on Thursday evening, the 35-year-old emphasized that most voters going into 2020 are more concerned about issues such as health care, education and infrastructure. One of her constituents, Joy Marie Zug, said she voted for Trump in 2016 after having supported Democratic President Barack Obama. Zug says she has since soured on Trump due to his "lies."The 46-year-old adult education administrator said Democrats should consider impeachment, based on the mountain of evidence in the Mueller report. But in a reflection of the difficulty of the strategic choice facing Democrats, she also said they should avoid making it a top campaign issue."I don't think this is something they need to run on," she said. "I just wish this wasn't the end."WEIGHING PRIORITIES-Democrats looking to 2020 must also weigh whether voters' views on the Russia probe are even susceptible to persuasion, given the country's deep partisan divides.A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted on Thursday and Friday after the report came out found 50 percent of Americans agreed that Trump or someone from his campaign worked with Russia during the campaign, and 58 percent of respondents said they believed Trump tried to stop investigations into the campaign's conduct. Those figures, which split heavily along party lines, were fairly similar to previous polls. One senior Democratic strategist involved in shaping the campaign message for 2020 House candidates, who asked for anonymity when discussing the party's internal thinking, said the party's own research showed the Russia probe was not particularly resonant for voters.Still, he said Mueller's findings would create the background "mood music" when Democrats talk in broad terms about corruption and government accountability.(Reporting by Joseph Ax in New York; Additional reporting by Steve Friess in Livonia, Michigan; Gary Robertson in Henrico, Virginia; Susan Cornwell in Washington; and Chris Kahn in New York; Editing by Frank McGurty and Marla Dickerson)
I wanna be dead': Teen obsessed with Columbine posted dark thoughts online-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Joseph Ax-April 21, 2019
(Editor's note: paragraph 4 contains language that readers may find offensive.) NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Florida teenager whose purported fascination with the 1999 Columbine school massacre sparked a massive hunt for her this week appears to have kept an online journal peppered with violent imagery and awash in despair, anger and suicidal thoughts. An online journal written by someone who identified herself as "Sol Pais" - the teenager who authorities said was found dead on Wednesday - included entries that alluded to "plans" that would lead to the author's death, though they did not describe specific threats against others.Law enforcement has not confirmed Pais is the author of the journal."Being alive is fucking overrated," one entry reads, above a drawing of a handgun going off with the word "ready?" underneath. "I wanna be dead so fucking bad already," another page from last September says.Pais, 18, was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday, authorities said, days after she traveled to Denver from her home in Florida and bought a shotgun ahead of Saturday's 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting in Littleton, Colorado. [nL1N21Z0U3]-Authorities had described Pais as "extremely dangerous" and "infatuated" with the mass shooting, in which two students killed 12 classmates and a teacher. She made undisclosed threats, officials said, prompting numerous Denver-area schools to close on Wednesday as a precaution. In an entry dated July 2018, the woman described a dream about her future plans."I was only a week away from the day, and I had my fucking shotgun already, and I just remember the constant lies - to my family, friends, police, to teachers," she said in recounting the dream.A drawing of what appears to be the barrel of a shotgun and a shotgun shell appears below the entry."One year is a long time for pain like this," she wrote in another 2018 entry. "I wish I could get a gun by the end of the summer."A user on the National Gun Forum used the same screen name as the blog's author in a series of posts starting in late March seeking advice on how an 18-year-old Florida resident could buy a shotgun in Colorado."I am planning a trip to Colorado in the next month or so and wanna buy a shotgun while I'm there and I was wondering what restrictions apply for me?" the first post read.Pais lived in Surfside, Florida, where her parents reported her missing on Monday. That day, she flew to Denver, according to authorities, and purchased a shotgun and ammunition legally at a store in Littleton, not far from Columbine.A man who identified himself as Pais' father told the Miami Herald on Tuesday that he had lost contact with Pais."I think maybe she's got a mental problem," he said, the newspaper reported. "I think she's gonna be okay."Classmates at Miami Beach Senior High School, where Pais was a student, described her as smart and unassuming, if somewhat socially awkward, the newspaper reported.(Reporting by Joseph Ax; Editing by Bill Berkrot)
FAA sets multi-nation review of Boeing's troubled Max planes-[AFP]-YAHOONEWS-April 21, 2019
Washington (AFP) - The US Federal Aviation Administration is planning what it calls a comprehensive multi-nation review of the control systems of the Boeing 737 Max airliner to include experts from nine civil aviation authorities. The review is to begin April 29 and is expected to take 90 days, the FAA announced Friday. The review will "evaluate aspects of the 737 Max automated flight-control system, including its design and pilots' interaction with the system, to determine its compliance with all applicable regulations and to identify future enhancements that might be needed," the agency said. That system is suspected to have played a role in the October 29, 2018 crash of a Lion Air flight near Jakarta, killing 189, and in the March 10, 2019 crash of an Ethiopian Airlines plane near Addis Ababa, killing 157.Both crashes occurred shortly after takeoff.Boeing Max planes -- the aerospace firm's all-time best-seller -- have been grounded worldwide since then, while engineers and investigators seek the exact causes of the crashes. The new review will be chaired by Chris Hart, a former head of the US National Transportation Safety Board, and will include experts from the FAA and NASA.In addition, civil aviation authorities from these countries will take part: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. In both the Indonesian and Ethiopian crashes, Boeing's new anti-stall system known as MCAS has been called into question. It reportedly lowered the crafts' noses repeatedly despite pilots' efforts to wrest back control. On Tuesday, Boeing carried out an engineering test flight of a Max plane with an updated MCAS system, considered a key step on the path to re-certifying the plane for flight.Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg, who was on board one recent test flight, vowed to make the 737 Max "one of the safest airplanes ever to fly."
Hamas calls on UN to speed up delivery of Qatari cash aid-Terror group blames bureaucracy at world body for holdup, says some understandings reached with Israel are ‘going well’-By AFP and Adam Rasgon-TOI-21 April 2019
Hamas on Friday called on the UN to speed up a plan to funnel Qatari aid into the Palestinian enclave, part of a reported Egyptian-brokered truce with Israel. After clashes between Israel and Hamas last month after Hamas fired a rocket deep into Israel, destroying a house and injuring 7 people, the ceasefire was hammered out amid fears of escalation.Hamas said the truce would see Israel ease its blockade of the Strip in exchange for quiet. Israel has not publicly commented on the reported agreement. Israel maintains the blockade to prevent Hamas, a terror organization dedicated to Israel’s destruction, from bringing in weapons, rockets and other material used to construct attack tunnels and other fortifications.Among measures to help Gazans was a plan to resume blocked aid from Qatar through a UN cash for work programs-In November, the Gulf state, which is a long-time Hamas ally, committed to around $15 million a month in aid over six months.Part of the funds were originally used to pay salaries of Hamas employees, but this was stopped after political opposition in Israel.Khalil al-Hayya, deputy head of the Hamas political bureau in Gaza, told AFP Friday that the alternative plan was stalled at the UN.“The Qatari funds exist and the funds allocated by the World Bank (for the cash for work programs) exist,” he said.“But the pace of the implementation of the United Nations mechanisms is slow,” he said, adding an appeal to UN envoy Nickolay Mladenov. “We call on the United Nations and Mr Mladenov to accelerate the implementation.”Two million Palestinians live in impoverished Gaza, crammed between Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean.Israel, which has fought three wars with Hamas, has blockaded the enclave for more than a decade, and Egypt often closes Gaza’s only other gateway to the outside world. On April 1 Israel expanded the fishing zone around Gaza, increasing it in one area to the largest distance in years, in what Hamas officials said was the first step in implementing its “understandings” with the Jewish state.“The understandings are in place,” al-Hayya said.”Some of them are going well, such as fishing.”Earlier, al-Hayya said that Israel has agreed to lift restrictions on importing into the Gaza Strip many “dual-use” goods as a part of ceasefire understandings with terror groups there, senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya said. For the past several years, Israel has heavily restricted the entry into Gaza of products that it labels “dual-use,” meaning that they can be utilized for both civilian and military purposes. Palestinians in Gaza have long been required to receive special permits to import goods that Israel categorizes as dual-use.“We extracted from the occupation the lifting of the restrictions and the ban…on 30 percent of these materials,” Hayya told the Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa TV in a long interview late Wednesday. The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, a Defense Ministry body responsible for liaising with the Palestinians, declined to confirm or deny Hayya’s comments.“We do not respond to foreign reports,” COGAT said in an email. The Prime Minister’s Office declined to respond to a request for comment.According to a World Bank report that was issued on Wednesday, there are 118 goods that Israel classifies as dual-use in relation to Gaza and 56 to the West Bank. Those pertaining to Gaza include several chemicals, machinery including drilling equipment, jet skis and many other materials and products. The report said World Bank estimates found that “easing dual-use restrictions could bring additional 6 percent growth in the West Bank economy and 11 percent in Gaza by 2025, compared to a scenario with continue restrictions.”Hayya also warned that if Israel did not abide by the recent ceasefire understandings, Palestinians in Gaza would renew launching incendiary and explosive-laden balloons into the Jewish state, nighttime protests in the border region between the Jewish state and the coastal enclave, and other measures.“[Israel] not abiding….would mean the rough tools would return. Everything and more than the rough tools would return,” he said. “We say that we will not accept the siege staying in place.”“Rough tools” refer to the launching of incendiary and explosive-laden balloons into Israel and nighttime protests in the border region between Israel and Gaza, which have included setting off small explosions, lighting tires on fire and pointing lasers at IDF soldiers.Since early April, the launching of balloons and nighttime protests have essentially been halted.Egypt, the United Nations and Qatar recently brokered ceasefire understandings between Israel and Hamas, which Hebrew media reports have said include an end to violence emanating from the Gaza in exchange for the Jewish state easing some of its restrictions on the movement of people and goods into and out of the coastal enclave.

Trump official: Unhelpful to use ‘two-state solution’ terminology in peace talks-Jason Greenblatt said to warn both Israelis and Palestinians against rejecting ‘deal of the century’-By TOI staff-APR 21,19
A US official, widely reported to be Mideast envoy Jason Greenblatt, warned both Israel and the Palestinians against rejecting US President Donald Trump’s upcoming peace plan and rejected the use of the term “two-state solution,” in comments reported Friday by Sky News Arabic. There was no reason to use the term because each side understood it differently, the official said, according to Channel 12 news, which named Greenblatt as the official involved. (An English-language transcript of the comments was not made available.) The official said both sides needed to be prepared for direct negotiations as each would have to make concessions, and there would be elements of the deal that each side would be satisfied with, and parts each would dislike. The official also said both sides would miss an opportunity for peace if they did not accept the deal, but he issued a special warning to the Palestinians, noting they had already spoken out against the plan before seeing it, while suggesting that it could have a significant and positive impact on their future. On Wednesday, on his twitter feed, Greenblatt had chided the new Palestinian Authority prime minister after the latter asserted that the “deal of the century” will be “born dead.”“Why does the new PA Prime Minister hope for our plan to be ‘born dead’ & for peace to fail? By working with us, perhaps something wonderful can happen for Palestinians. We’ve repeatedly said this won’t just be an economic plan,” Greenblatt tweeted, referencing growing speculation that the initiative will be short on political incentives for the Palestinians.“PM (Mohammad) Shtayyeh, starting a new job by condemning a plan you haven’t seen is unfair to Palestinians. You have an obligation to first look at an opportunity before you dismiss it. The PA can continue to push us away, but that will do nothing to improve the lives of the Palestinians,” Greenblatt added. On Thursday, Shtayyeh responded directly to Greenblatt’s Twitter thread, asserting that “any political initiative that does not call for ending Israeli occupation and establishing an independent and sovereign Palestinian State with Jerusalem as its capital on the borders of 1967 with settling the refugees cause is not acceptable to the Palestinians.”Earlier Friday, Greenblatt denied rumors that the plan called for the Palestinians to be given part of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.“Hearing reports our plan includes the concept that we will give a portion of Sinai (which is Egypt’s) to Gaza. False!” he wrote on Twitter. With the Trump team keeping the details of the plan close to their chests (and with one report indicating that even Trump has not seen the entire plan) rumors of its content have swirled, particularly on social media.Reports had circulated in recent days that under the deal, Egypt would give up a chunk of the northern Sinai that lies next to the Gaza Strip for the creation of something called the “New State.”A video detailing the plan, purportedly from the Trump team, is apparently from an independent Israeli think tank called New State Solution. On Wednesday Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner said the plan will not be unveiled until June at the earliest.Kushner told some 100 foreign diplomats the plan will be rolled out after the new Israeli government is sworn in and following the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which ends June 5.He urged them to keep an “open mind,” according to a source cited by the Reuters news service.Although little is known about the long-awaited plan, recent reports in the Washington Post and Guardian suggested it would not include full Palestinian statehood. That is a likely deal-breaker for Palestinians, who were already not cooperating with Trump’s Middle East team following the US president’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December 2017 and moving of the US embassy there in May 2018.
