Woman who fled Saudi Arabia reaches her new home in Canada-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-ROB GILLIES-January 13, 2019
TORONTO (AP) — Tired but smiling, an 18-year-old Saudi woman who said she feared death if deported back home arrived Saturday in Canada, which offered her asylum in a case that attracted global attention after she mounted a social media campaign."This is Rahaf Alqunun, a very brave new Canadian," Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said arm-in-arm with the Saudi woman in Toronto's airport.Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun smiled broadly as she exited an airport arrival door sporting a Canada zipper hoodie and a U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees hat, capping a dramatic week that saw her flee her family while visiting Kuwait and before flying to Bangkok. Once there, she barricaded herself in an airport hotel to avoid deportation and tweeted about her situation. On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would accept Alqunun as a refugee. Her situation has highlighted the cause of women's rights in Saudi Arabia, where several women fleeing abuse by their families have been caught trying to seek asylum abroad in recent years and returned home.Freeland said Alqunun preferred not to take questions Saturday."She is obviously very tired after a long journey and she preferred to go and get settled," Freeland said. "But it was Rahaf's choice to come out and say hello to Canadians. She wanted Canadians to see that she's here, that she's well and that she's very happy to be in her new home."After arriving she was off to get winter clothes, said Mario Calla, executive director of COSTI Immigrant Services, which is helping her settle in temporary housing and applying for a health card.Calla said Alqunun has friends in Toronto who she would be meeting up with this weekend."She did comment to me about the cold," Freeland said."It does get warmer," Freeland said she told her.Alqunun flew to Toronto via Seoul, South Korea, according to Thai immigration Police Chief Surachate Hakparn. Alqunun tweeted two pictures from her plane seat — one with what appears to be a glass of wine and her passport and another holding her passport while on the plane with the hashtag "I did it" and the emojis showing a plane, hearts and a wine glass.Canada's decision to grant her asylum could further upset the country's relations with Saudi Arabia. In August, Saudi Arabia expelled Canada's ambassador to the kingdom and withdrew its own ambassador after Canada's Foreign Ministry tweeted support for women's right activists who had been arrested. The Saudis also sold Canadian investments and ordered their citizens studying in Canada to leave.Freeland avoided an answer when asked what Alqunun's case would mean to Saudi-Canadian relations. There was no immediate Saudi government reaction, nor any mention of her arrival in state media. But a Saudi government-sanctioned body, the National Society for Human Rights, said it deplores the methods used by some foreign officials and organizations to "incite" some young Saudi females to disobey their families and leave the country. In a statement late Saturday, the group's director, Muftal al-Qahtani, slammed alleged political motives of some countries and said attempts to encourage these women to disobey their families leaves some vulnerable to abuse and trafficking, and harms families. Al-Qahtani insisted women facing abuse in the kingdom can turn to Saudi authorities and local organizations for assistance.Freeland said that the U.N. refugee agency found Alqunun was in danger in Thailand and that Canada's government is glad it was able to act quickly to offer her refuge.Alqunun's father arrived in Bangkok on Tuesday, but his daughter refused to meet with him.Several other countries, including Australia, had been in talks with the U.N.'s refugee agency to accept Alqunun, Surachate said."She chose Canada. It's her personal decision," he said.Australian media reported that UNHCR had withdrawn its referral for Alqunun to be resettled in Australia because Canberra was taking too long to decide on her asylum."When referring cases with specific vulnerabilities who need immediate resettlement, we attach great importance to the speed at which countries consider and process cases," a UNHCR spokesperson in Bangkok told The Associated Press in an email reply on condition of anonymity because the person wasn't authorized to discuss the case publicly."Why did Rahaf go to Canada instead of her preferred choice of Australia where she had friends?" Human Rights Watch executive director Kenneth Roth said in a tweet. "Because she needed safety from her Saudi pursuers fast, and Canada expedited her case while Australia slow-walked it."Canada's ambassador saw her off at the airport, where Alqunun thanked everyone for helping her. She plans to start learning more English, though she already speaks it more than passably.Alqunun was stopped Jan. 5 at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport by immigration police who denied her entry and seized her passport. She barricaded herself in an airport hotel room where her social media campaign got enough public and diplomatic support that Thai officials admitted her temporarily under the protection of U.N. officials, who granted her refugee status Wednesday.Surachate said her father — whose name has not been released — denied physically abusing Alqunun or trying to force her into an arranged marriage, which were among the reasons she gave for her flight. He said Alqunun's father wanted his daughter back but respected her decision."He has 10 children. He said the daughter might feel neglected sometimes," Surachate said.UNHCR spokeswoman Lauren La Rose said the fact she was processed so quickly is a credit to those that made it happen."This is someone who was clearly in harm's way, who clearly felt her life with her threatened, and my colleagues in concert with governments in Thailand and Canada recognized that need," she said___Associated Press video journalist David Martin in Toronto and AP writers Tassanee Vejpongsa in Bangkok and Aya Btrawy in Subai, United Arab Emirates, contributed to this report.
Government shutdown becomes longest in US history-Trump backs off threats to declare national emergency over Democrats’ refusal to fund his Mexico border wall, as partial shutdown enters record 22nd day-By Sebastian Smith-13 January 2019
WASHINGTON (AFP) — The US government shutdown that has left 800,000 federal employees without salaries as a result of President Donald Trump’s row with Democrats over building a Mexico border wall entered a record 22nd day Saturday. The Democrats’ refusal to approve $5.7 billion demanded by Trump for the wall project has paralyzed Washington, with the president retaliating by refusing to sign off on budgets for swaths of government departments unrelated to the dispute. As a result, workers as diverse as FBI agents, air traffic controllers and museum staff, did not receive paychecks Friday. The partial shutdown of the government became the longest on record at midnight Friday, when it overtook the 21-day stretch in 1995-1996, under president Bill Clinton.Trump on Friday backed off a series of previous threats to end the deadlock by declaring a national emergency and attempting to secure the funds without congressional approval.“I’m not going to do it so fast,” he said at a White House meeting.Trump described an emergency declaration as the “easy way out” and said Congress had to step up to the responsibility of approving the $5.7 billion.“If they can’t do it… I will declare a national emergency. I have the absolute right,” he insisted.Until now, Trump had suggested numerous times that he was getting closer to taking the controversial decision.Only minutes earlier, powerful Republican ally Senator Lindsey Graham tweeted after talks with Trump: “Mr. President, Declare a national emergency NOW.”It was not clear what made Trump change course. But Trump himself acknowledged in the White House meeting that an attempt to claim emergency powers would likely end up in legal battles going all the way to the Supreme Court.Opponents say that a unilateral move by the president over the sensitive border issue would be constitutional overreach and set a dangerous precedent in similar controversies.-‘Under siege’-The standoff has turned into a test of political ego, particularly for Trump, who came into office boasting of his deal making powers and making an aggressive border policy the keystone of his nationalist agenda.Democrats, meanwhile, seem determined at all costs to prevent a president who relishes campaign rally chants of “build the wall!” from getting a win. Both Democrats and Republicans agree that the US-Mexican frontier presents major challenges, ranging from the hyper-violent Mexican drug trade to the plight of asylum seekers and poor migrants seeking new lives in the world’s richest country. There’s also little debate that border walls are needed: about a third of the frontier is already fenced off.But Trump has turned his single-minded push for more walls into a political crusade seen by opponents as a stunt to stoke xenophobia in his right-wing voter base, while willfully ignoring the border’s complex realities. For Trump, who visited the Texas border with Mexico on Thursday, the border situation amounts to an invasion by criminals that can only be solved by more walls.“We have a country that’s under siege,” he told the local officials in the White House. Some studies show that illegal immigrants generally commit fewer crimes than people born in the United States, although not everyone agrees on this.More certain is that while narcotics do enter the country across remote sections of the border, most are sneaked through heavily guarded checkpoints in vehicles, the government’s own Drug Enforcement Administration said in a 2017 report. It said that most smuggling is done “through US ports of entry (POEs) in passenger vehicles with concealed compartments or commingled with legitimate goods on tractor trailers.”Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives and a key figure in opposing Trump’s agenda, said money should be spent in many areas of border security, but not on walls.“We need to look at the facts,” she said. But Trump accused the Democrats of only wanting to score points against him with a view to the 2020 presidential elections.“They think, ‘Gee, we can hurt Trump,'” he said. “The Democrats are just following politics.”
Top Yemen brass injured in rebel drone strike dies: medics-[AFP]-YAHOONEWS-January 13, 2019
Dubai (AFP) - A high-ranking Yemeni intelligence official injured in a Huthi rebel drone attack on the country's largest air base died of his wounds on Sunday, medical sources said.Intelligence Brigadier General Saleh Tamah was wounded on Thursday in a strike on a military parade in Al-Anad air base, in government-held Lahij province some 60 kilometres (40 miles) north of Yemen's second city Aden.Medical sources told AFP that Tamah underwent several surgeries in a hospital in Aden but died Sunday morning. At least seven loyalists -- including Tamah -- were killed and 11 injured in Thursday's incident, which threatens to hamper United Nations-led peace efforts.Among those injured were Yemen's deputy chief of staff Saleh al-Zandani, senior army commander Fadel Hasan and Lahij governor Ahmad Abdullah al-Turki.Turki and Zandani were transported to Saudi Arabia for treatment, a Yemeni official told AFP.The UN voiced alarm on Friday following the attack and urged "all parties to the conflict to exercise restraint and refrain from further escalation".At talks in Sweden last month, the UN brokered several agreements between the Iran-aligned Huthi rebels and the Saudi-backed government seen as the best chance of ending nearly four years of devastating conflict. The warring sides agreed on truce deals for the key rebel-held aid port of Hodeida and battleground third city Taez. The UN is working to schedule a new round of consultations, possibly in Kuwait, aimed at drafting a political framework. The war between the Huthis and loyalist troops escalated in March 2015, when President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi fled into Saudi exile and a Saudi-led military coalition intervened.Since then, the conflict has killed nearly 10,000 people and unleashed the world's worst humanitarian crisis, according to the UN.UN aid officials say 80 percent of the population -- 24 million people -- are in need of aid and nearly 10 million are just one step away from famine.

US starts withdrawing supplies from Syria; soldiers will follow in weeks-Full pullout is expected to take several months; not clear what will become of hundreds of foreign IS fighters being held there-By Robert Burns-TOI-13 January 2019
WASHINGTON (AP) — The US military said Friday it has started pulling equipment, but not troops, out of Syria as a first step in meeting President Donald Trump’s demand for a complete military withdrawal. The announcement fueled concern about how quickly the US will abandon its Kurdish allies, amid contradictory statements recently by administration officials on an exit timetable. The withdrawal began with shipments of military equipment, US defense officials said. But in coming weeks, the contingent of about 2,000 troops is expected to depart even as the White House vows to keep pressure on the Islamic State group. Once the troops are gone, the US will have ended three years of organizing, arming, advising and providing air cover for Syrian, Kurdish and Arab fighters in an open-ended campaign devised by the Obama administration to deal the IS group a lasting defeat.Uncertainty over the timing and terms of the Syria pullout have raised questions about the Trump administration’s broader strategy for fighting Islamic extremism, including Trump’s stated intention to reduce US forces in Afghanistan this summer.US airstrikes against IS in Syria began in September 2014, and ground troops moved in the following year in small numbers. The US military has a limited network of bases inside Syria. Troops work mostly out of small camps in remote parts of the country’s northeast. Also, US troops are among 200 to 300 coalition troops at a garrison in southern Syria known as al-Tanf, where they train and accompany local Syrian opposition forces on patrols to counter the IS group. Al-Tanf is on a vital road linking Iranian-backed forces from Tehran all the way to southern Lebanon — and Israel’s doorstep.Trump’s decision to leave Syria, which he initially said would be rapid but later slowed down, shocked US allies and angered the Kurds in Syria, who are vulnerable to attack by Turkey. It also prompted the resignation of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and drew criticism in Congress. Sen. Jack Reed, a Rhode Island Democrat, called the decision a “betrayal of our Kurdish partners.”The US military command in Baghdad, which is managing the counter-IS campaign in Iraq and Syria, said Friday that it “has begun the process of our deliberate withdrawal from Syria,” adding that, for security reasons, it would not reveal timetables, locations or troop movements. Other US officials later made clear that the pullout did not yet include troops. The withdrawal plan, whose details are classified, includes bringing hundreds of additional troops into Syria temporarily to facilitate the pullout. These include troops to provide extra security for those who are preparing to leave. The full withdrawal is expected to take several months. The USS Kearsarge amphibious assault ship is now in the region and could provide troops and equipment to support the withdrawal.US troops are still working with a partner known as the Syrian Democratic Forces to stamp out the last IS holdouts in the Middle Euphrates River Valley near the Iraqi border. Trump has asserted that the IS group in Syria is defeated, but others have said a continued US military presence is necessary to prevent a resurgence of the group. Two weeks before Trump announced he was ordering a pullout, Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the US still had a long way to go in training local Syrian forces to stabilize areas ridden of the IS group. He said it would take 35,000 to 40,000 local forces in northeastern Syria to maintain security, but only about 20 percent had been trained.Another complication is the fate of hundreds of foreign IS fighters being held in Syria. The US doesn’t want these prisoners to be released once US forces are gone, since they could rejoin the militant cause in Syria or elsewhere. There has been confusion over plans to implement Trump’s pullout order amid threats from Turkey to attack the Kurdish fighters, who are seen by Ankara as terrorists because of their ties to insurgents within Turkey. On a visit to Turkish troops stationed near the Syrian border Friday, Turkey’s defense minister, Hulusi Akar, reiterated that Ankara is “determined” to fight Kurdish militias it considers terrorists and said military preparations were ongoing.“When the time and place comes, the terrorists here will also be buried in the ditches and trenches they have dug,” he said.Earlier this week, Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, said American troops will not leave northeastern Syria until the IS group is defeated and American-allied Kurdish fighters are protected, signaling a slowdown in Trump’s initial order for a rapid withdrawal. In Cairo on Thursday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that although Trump has decided to bring troops home, he will keep up the fight against the IS group more broadly.“Let me be clear: America will not retreat until the terror fight is over,” Pompeo said. The distinctive feature of the US military campaign in Syria is its partnership with the Kurds and Arabs who were willing to act as American proxies by fighting the Islamic State group without US troops having to take the lead combat role. US forces took a similar approach in neighboring Iraq, starting in 2014, but in that case, they had a willing partner in the Iraqi government, whereas in Syria, the US is present without the blessing of President Bashar Assad.Syria also is complicated by the presence of Russian troops who are, in effect, propping up the Assad government, and by Iranian support for Assad. American and Russian warplanes have shared the skies over Syria, carrying out separate— and in some cases, conflicting — missions against the IS group and other targets. The US has about 5,200 troops in Iraq to assist its security forces, and Trump has given no indication he intends to withdraw them any time soon. He has, however, asserted that the US must bring an end to the Mideast wars that began after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. He has questioned the wisdom of continuing the 17-year war in Afghanistan and recently demanded that about half of the 14,000 US troops there be sent home.
Sirens blare in southern Israel; rocket lands in open field-Local residents report hearing explosions in Sdot Negev and Sha’ar Hanegev, both communities near Gaza-By TOI staff-13 January 2019
Sirens indicating incoming rockets from the Gaza Strip blared Saturday night in Sdot Negev and Sha’ar Hanegev in southern Israel. The Israeli military said it identified one rocket launch into Israeli territory. The projectile landed in an open field in the Sdot Negev area, according to local authorities. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries and the army said it was further investigating.Local residents reported hearing a series of explosions, according to the Hadashot TV report. The launch caps another weekend of violence along the Gaza border where some 13,000 Palestinians participated on Friday in the riots along the fence, throwing rocks, firebombs and hand-grenades at Israeli troops, burning tires and trying to breach the security fence. Israeli soldiers responded with tear gas and, in some cases, live fire, the army said.A Palestinian woman was killed during the mass riot, the Strip’s Hamas-run health ministry said, as the Hamas terror group threatened renewed violence over fresh quarrels with Israel and the Palestinian Authority. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry identified the woman as Amal Tramsi, 43, saying she was the third woman to die in months of clashes. The air force attacked two Hamas posts in northern Gaza in response to the violence, the Israel Defense Forces said Friday. At least 15 other Palestinians were injured by Israeli fire during the border riots, the ministry said. One of them was reportedly a journalist, hurt when an ambulance was hit.An Israeli soldier was lightly injured by a rock, the IDF said. The Israeli army had braced for an outbreak of renewed violence along the Gaza border, as tensions escalated between Jerusalem and the Hamas terror group that rules the Strip as well as between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. The Egyptian military sent a senior delegation to the Palestinian enclave on Thursday, led by deputy chief of the Egyptian General Intelligence Services Ayman Badia, in an effort to negotiate a settlement on some of the issues and prevent an escalation. The delegation left Gaza on Friday afternoon and traveled to Ramallah in the West Bank for talks with the PA.Throughout the morning, Palestinians along the border launched balloons laden with incendiary devices across the border into Israel. As of Friday afternoon, they had caused no significant damage. However, more serious clashes with Israeli troops began later in the day, following afternoon prayers, as has been the case since March 2018, with the start of the “March of Return” protests, an initially civilian-led movement that was quickly hijacked by Hamas. An Islamist terror group that seized control of Gaza in 2007, Hamas seeks to destroy Israel. As it does every week, the Israel Defense Forces deployed troops along the border ahead of Friday’s riots. No special safety instructions were given to Israeli communities near the border. In recent days, Hamas has ramped up its threats of renewed violence along the Gaza border after Israel halted the transfer of $15 million of Qatari funds to the terror group after an exchange of fire earlier this week. The funds are part of a series of six $15 million deposits Israel is allowing Qatar to deliver to Hamas as part of a highly contentious ceasefire agreement. The funds are meant ostensibly to pay the group’s civilian workers, though some Israeli officials — including former defense minister Avigdor Liberman — maintain the money will be used for Hamas’s terrorist activities.Palestinian sources in Gaza this week reported that Hamas is planning to renew incendiary balloon attacks, along with the offensive tactics implemented in the weeks preceding the Qatari cash injection.A week ago, Hamas officials met with the heads of the “kite unit,” as well as leaders of the group’s so-called “tire unit” and a unit that carries out a variety of operations close to the border under the cover of darkness, such as demonstrations and attempts to damage the fence. At that meeting, the unit heads received a new budget to prepare for the next round of violence.Adding to the tensions in Gaza, Hamas and the Palestinian Authority have stepped up their ongoing fight for power. This week the PA took the dramatic step of pulling its men from the Rafah Border Crossing with Egypt, effectively closing it, saying that Hamas had been intimidating and harassing their officials.Hamas quickly sent its own men to reopen the crossing. However, Cairo refused to allow Palestinians to enter Egypt through the crossing. Gaza’s Hamas-run interior ministry said in a statement late Monday that Egyptian authorities had informed it that the crossing “will be limited to only the arrival of individuals and the entry of goods” into the Strip.Badia’s delegation to Gaza on Thursday and Friday worked to resolve this issue between Hamas and the PA.Khalil al-Hayya, deputy head of Hamas, told journalists on Thursday that the Egyptians “assured us that there will be no changes at the Rafah border, and it will stay open” despite the personnel change. There was no official confirmation from Egypt, which hosted US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday. It was not immediately clear when the crossing would fully reopen. The PA had taken control of the Rafah crossing in November 2017, as part of a deal for Egypt to reopen the border, which had been entirely shut since August of that year and largely sealed for years before that.Israeli officials reportedly lobbied for Cairo to reopen the crossing, fearing keeping the crossing with Egypt closed could lead to a buildup of pressure in Gaza that would turn against the Jewish state. This would also serve as a significant blow to the PA, which would lose one of the few areas of control it still has in the Gaza Strip.Senior Egyptian officials were quoted in a report Thursday in the Qatari al-Araby al-Jadid newspaper as saying that the Israeli defense establishment “is concerned that squeezing the Gaza Strip will turn the attention of the Palestinian factions toward” Israel.Hayya said he expected that all sides would stick to an informal truce agreement with Israel.Avi Issacharoff and Agencies contributed to this report.
Israeli jets strike Hamas targets in Gaza after rocket fire-Military says aircraft bomb two underground sites, after missile shot from enclave lands in open area in Israel-By TOI staff-13 January 2019
The Israeli military carried out airstrikes in northern Gaza on Saturday in response to an earlier rocket launch into Israeli territory, capping a weekend that saw deadly violence along the Gaza border.“IDF fighter jets targeted two of Hamas’ underground structures in the Gaza Strip,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.“We will continue operating to defend Israeli civilians,” it added. Two targets in Gaza City were hit by the Israeli strikes and no one was harmed, security sources in Gaza said.Hamas is believed to have a large network of tunnels crisscrossing the Strip and close to, or under, the frontier with Israel. The attack was in response to a rocket launch earlier in the night, the army said. The military holds Hamas, which is the de facto ruler in Gaza, responsible for the any activity in the Strip. The rocket landed in an open field in Israel, after setting off sirens in the southern communities of Sdot Negev and Sha’ar Hanegev, the IDF said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.Tamir Idan, head of the Sdot Negev Regional Council, called on the government to respond more harshly to rocket launches from the Hamas-ruled territory. The rocket launch caps another weekend of violence along the Gaza border where some 13,000 Palestinians participated on Friday in the riots along the fence, throwing rocks, firebombs and hand-grenades at Israeli troops, burning tires and trying to breach the security fence.
IDF chief warns Iran’s Soleimani: He who acts against us puts his life in danger-In farewell interviews, Gadi Eisenkot says Iran poses most significant threat to Israel, but is being forced to rethink-By TOI staff-13 January 2019
Israel’s outgoing IDF chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot issued a thinly veiled threat against a powerful commander in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, who has been overseeing Tehran’s efforts to deepen its military presence in Syria. In wide-ranging interviews with two leading Israeli news channels aired on Saturday night, Eisenkot was asked about the threat posed to Israel by Iran, and specifically the role played by Qassem Soleimani, who heads the Quds Force expeditionary unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. He said Iran seeks to destroy the Jewish state and had sought to “strangle Israel from Lebanon, Syria and the Gaza Strip.” Thanks to IDF operations, including the exposure of Hezbollah’s cross-border attack tunnels from Lebanon, he said, Iran was “a long way from achieving that goal.”Asked whether Iran was giving up, Eisenkot said no, but that it was “scaling back.”Noting that Soleimani was coordinating Iran’s military activities across Israel’s northern border, a Hadashot TV interviewer asked Eisenkot why he was still alive: “Are you weighing, or did you weigh, hitting him?”“He who acts against us puts himself in danger,” replied Eisenkot, noting that “I don’t want to issue threats.”Channel 10 asked Eisenkot more bluntly of Soleimani: “Why is he still alive?”Eisenkot: “That’s a question.”The interviewer persisted: “If it was up to you?” Eisenkot shrugged and said nothing. In the interviews, the outgoing chief of staff said Israel is safer than it was four years ago, when he began his tenure, but still faces many challenges.Beyond the nuclear threat posed by Iran, what worried him most was the Islamic Republic’s efforts to open a new front with Israel, by entrenching itself in Syria and strengthening its proxy in Lebanon, Hezbollah.“Hezbollah has a number of capabilities,” Eisenkot told Hadashot news, “among them a sophisticated plan to conquer parts of Israel [in a future conflict]. This was the flagship project of Hezbollah. The second plan was to build up its precise weapons capabilities to hit large-scale, specific targets in Israel.”“As of right now, Hezbollah does not have precise capabilities to hit Israeli targets; its capabilities are marginal,” Eisenkot said.Earlier this week, the IDF chief said the Lebanese terror group had planned to use its array of underground attack tunnels to carry out a surprise invasion of Israel that would “throw Israel off balance and cause an earthquake in Israeli society.” Israel, however, had shocked Hezbollah by depriving it of this weapon.Last month, the army launched an engineering operation, Northern Shield, to find and destroy the cross-border attack tunnels. It also recently formed a new reserves battalion to act as the first line of defense against Hezbollah by protecting the communities along the northern border with Lebanon. The IDF believes the Lebanese terror group will seek to conquer swaths of northern Israel as the opening maneuver of a future war, citing Hezbollah’s own propaganda and threats as evidence. Under the tunnel plan, hundreds of Hezbollah fighters were infiltrate into northern Israel through subterranean tunnels, while many more would swarm across the border above ground, and the surrounding area would be bombarded to prevent the Israeli military from sending in reinforcements to liberate it.Military officials have indicated that the tunnels discovered by the IDF along the Lebanese border last month were a central aspect of Hezbollah’s plans for a surprise attack and that their destruction represented a significant setback for the terror group, potentially putting off a confrontation with Israel by several years.Israel, Eisenkot said, has proven that it can act against Iran’s entrenchment in Syria and is hurting Iran’s capabilities significantly. “They wanted to build an intelligence operation on the Israeli border; we destroyed these efforts and they do not exist today.”Eisenkot is set to step down January 15.Ahead of his retirement, he also gave an interview to The New York Times in which he said that Israel has carried out “thousands” of airstrikes against Iranian military targets in Syria in recent years.“We struck thousands of targets without claiming responsibility or asking for credit,” he said.Eisenkot said Israel in the last two years shifted its focus to Iran, its primary enemy, to prevent the IDF from getting bogged down in fighting secondary enemies like Hamas in Gaza.“When you fight for many years against a weak enemy,” he said, “it also weakens you.”At first, Eisenkot said Israeli operations in Syria operated under a “certain threshold,” referring to the IDF restricting strikes to weapons shipments bound for Iran’s Lebanon-based proxy group Hezbollah during the first few years of the civil war that broke out in 2011.But in the years that followed, Eisenkot said Iran made a “significant change” in its Syria strategy, and began importing manpower from around the Muslim world in a bid to solidify its hold in the country.“Their vision was to have significant influence in Syria by building a force of up to 100,000 Shiite fighters from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq,” he said. “They built intelligence bases and an air force base within each Syrian airbase. And they brought civilians in order to indoctrinate them.”By 2016, Eisenkot said, Soleimani had mobilized 3,000 of his men in Syria, along with 8,000 Hezbollah fighters and another 11,000 foreign Shiite troops.By January 2017, Eisenkot said he received unanimous permission from the security cabinet to step up strikes in Syria to near daily occurrences. In 2018 alone, he said Israel dropped 2,000 bombs on Iranian targets.Soleimani attempted to retaliate to the ramped up Israeli campaign by launching 30 rockets at northern Israel last May, but Eisenkot said that not a single one reached its target. The outgoing IDF chief said the Israeli strikes have been successful in preventing Iran from entrenching itself in Syria like it has in Yemen, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. Soleimani, he said, made a strategic mistake by underestimating Israel’s resolve to act against Iranian interests in the region.“His error was choosing a playground where he is relatively weak,” Eisenkot said. “We have complete intelligence superiority in this area. We enjoy complete aerial superiority. We have strong deterrence and we have the justification to act.”“The force we faced over the last two years was a determined force,” he added, “but not very impressive in its capabilities.”As a result of the Israeli strikes, Eisenkot said the Iranians were moving troops out of Syria and “transferring their efforts” to Iraq.
After mass riots on Gaza border, US envoy says Hamas ‘putting lives at risk’-Following death of Palestinian woman amid violent protests, Jason Greenblatt says terror group making ‘cynical use of Gaza’s citizens’ and driving the Strip backward-By TOI staff-13 January 2019
Jason Greenblatt, US President Donald Trump’s envoy to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, condemned Hamas Friday for its “instigation of violence” along the Gaza Strip’s border with Israel, after a day of intense rioting along the frontier. In a tweet, Greenblatt said Hamas was “putting lives, both Israeli and Palestinian, at risk,” and added that it was making “cynical use of Gaza’s citizens” while driving the territory backward. The Israeli army said some 13,000 Palestinians participated in riots along the fence Friday afternoon, throwing rocks, fire bombs and hand-grenades at Israeli troops, burning tires and trying to breach the security fence. Israeli soldiers responded with tear gas and, in some cases, live fire, the army said.A Palestinian woman was shot dead by troops during the riot, the Strip’s Hamas-run health ministry said.Hamas’ instigation of violence along the Israel/Gaza border is putting lives, both Israeli and Palestinian, at risk. Hamas’ cynical use of Gaza’s citizens needs to stop. Hamas will continue to drive Gaza backward with this type of activity.— Jason D. Greenblatt (@jdgreenblatt45) January 11, 2019-The air force attacked two Hamas posts in northern Gaza in response to violence, the Israel Defense Forces said.At least 15 other Palestinians were injured by Israeli fire during the border riots, the ministry said. One of them was reportedly a journalist, hurt when an ambulance was hit.An Israeli soldier was lightly injured by a rock, the IDF said. The army said it identified several incidents where Palestinians tried to breach the fence and in one instance opened fire on them.“IDF troops monitored the suspects in each incident and all the suspects returned to the Gaza Strip soon after crossing,” the army said. “In response to the violent events along the security fence, an IDF aircraft targeted a Hamas military post.” Aircraft later hit a second post. The delegation left Gaza on Friday afternoon and traveled to Ramallah in the West Bank for talks with the PA.Throughout the morning, Palestinians along the border launched balloons laden with incendiary devices across the border into Israel.More serious clashes with Israeli troops began later in the day, following afternoon prayers, as has been the case since March 2018, with the start of the “March of Return” protests, an initially civilian-led movement that was quickly hijacked by Hamas. The funds are meant ostensibly to pay the group’s civilian workers, though some Israeli officials — including former defense minister Avigdor Liberman — maintain the money will be used for Hamas’s terrorist activities.Palestinian sources in Gaza this week reported that Hamas is planning to renew incendiary balloon attacks, along with the offensive tactics implemented in the weeks preceding the Qatari cash injection.Judah Ari Gross and agencies contributed to this report.

Snowstorm targets Washington, at least five dead in U.S. Midwest-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Alex Dobuzinskis-January 13, 2019
(Reuters) - A winter storm that dumped heavy snow on the U.S. Midwest, causing at least five roadway deaths, stranding some motorists in Missouri and canceling dozens of flights, marched east toward Washington on Saturday. The weather system, which started as rain from Mexico but has since turned into snow, is forecast to affect an 1,800-mile (2,900 km) swath of the United States from Colorado to the Mid-Atlantic.The storm hit Kansas and Missouri on Friday and pummeled those states again on Saturday as it extended into parts of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, said U.S. Weather Prediction Center meteorologist Andrew Orrison. In Kansas City, snow dusted the field at Arrowhead Stadium during Saturday's National Football League playoff game between the hometown Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts."There's snow time like Showtime," the Chiefs said on Twitter, sharing video of the team's quarterback Patrick Mahomes arriving at the stadium in the snow. The storm is leaving its heaviest snowfall on areas west of St. Louis, where about a foot and a half of snow was recorded, with still more falling on Saturday, Orrison said.At least five people died in weather-related crashes on roads in Missouri and Kansas, according to the highway patrolmen in both states."I think it's safe to say that every road is bad in Kansas right now!" Trooper Tod Hileman, a spokesman for the Kansas Highway Patrol, said on Twitter on Saturday.Dozens of flights were canceled at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, which described the onslaught of snow on Twitter as one of its biggest single-day winter storms in years.Snow is forecast for the Appalachian Mountains and the Mid-Atlantic on Saturday evening and Sunday."Given how cold it is across the Midwest and even in the mid-Atlantic region, certainly people who are going to be out are going to want to dress in layered clothing," Orrison said.Washington, where many federal government offices are closed due to the U.S. government shutdown, is expected to receive 6 to 8 inches (15 cm to 20 cm) of snow from this storm, according to the National Weather Service.Central and northern Virginia will receive even more, with up to 10 inches of snow possible in some places. Baltimore and parts of Maryland are also bracing for a similar amount.Philadelphia is expected to receive a few inches of snow, but areas north of there are expected to be spared, Orrison added.(Reporting by Alex Dobuzinskis and Letitia Stein; editing by Chizu Nomiyama and G Crosse)
