The Israeli Air Force carried out airstrikes in Syria Wednesday night, targeting regime forces in the Quneitra region near the border, hours after a Syrian drone was shot down by the military after entering Israeli airspace.The military confirmed the bombings in the Syrian Golan, saying they came in response to the drone infiltration.Syrian state news agency SANA claimed Syria’s air defenses blocked the attack near the village of Hader.“The aircraft of the Israeli enemy launches a number of missiles at several army positions” in Quneitra, causing material damage, it said.The IDF Spokesperson’s Office said the army will “continue to act decisively and forcefully against attempts to violate Israeli sovereignty.” It warned the Syrian regime against any attempt to act against Israeli forces.According to the military, shortly after 3:15 p.m. an apparently unarmed Syrian drone entered Israeli airspace from Syria through the demilitarized zone between the two countries, after first passing over Jordan. An Israeli drone fired toward a group of Palestinians flying incendiary balloons into southern Israel from the southern Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian media.No injuries were reported in the airstrike, which was said to have occurred east of the city of Rafah.The Israeli military confirmed that one of its aircraft fired at a cell that had launched balloons toward Israel from the southern Gaza Strip.This was the first such strike by the IDF against Palestinians sending airborne arson devices into Israel in two weeks.Throughout the day on Wednesday, incendiary kites and balloons sparked 19 fires, of varying sizes, in southern Israel, according to local government officials.Fifteen of them occurred in the Eshkol region, which abuts the southern Gaza Strip. Miami (AFP) - Hurricane Chris weakened on Wednesday off the US East Coast, with maximum wind speeds dropping to 90 miles per hour (150 kilometers per hour) on an expected course towards Canada's Newfoundland province.The center of the storm is expected to pass near or over southeastern Newfoundland on Thursday afternoon or evening, when it will likely become a strong post-tropical cyclone, said the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami.NHC downgraded Chris from Category Two to a Category One hurricane.It cautioned that swells generated by Chris, which was 570 miles east-northeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, "could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions" along the coast of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states.Chris on Tuesday became the second hurricane of this year's Atlantic season.Last year was especially devastating with hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria tearing deadly paths through the Caribbean and southeastern United States.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — An Argentine federal judge investigating the 1994 Buenos Aires AMIA Jewish center bombing has asked Russian officials to arrest a high-level Iranian adviser to the country’s supreme leader in connection with the attack.Ali Akbar Velayati was scheduled to meet with President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday in Moscow. Velayati, who was Iran’s foreign minister at the time of the terrorist attack and has been implicated in ordering the bombing, is now an adviser on international affairs to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.Velayati is among special envoys that Iran is sending to various countries in response to the US withdrawal earlier this year from the 2015 nuclear deal.“After Mr. Trump’s strategic mistake in unilaterally withdrawing, the Islamic Republic of Iran decided to send special envoys to different countries conveying the message of high officials of Iran containing our stances, positions, and approaches towards this arrogant and illegal move of the US,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said in describing the Wednesday visit of Velayati to Moscow.Following news reports of the visit, Judge Rodolfo Canicoba Corral requested the arrest of Velayati. Palestinian merchants and business leaders in the Gaza Strip expressed frustration on Wednesday over Israel’s new restrictions at the Kerem Shalom commercial crossing, warning the clampdown on imports and exports could significantly damage their business interests and undermine the economic welfare of other Palestinians in the coastal enclave.On Monday, the IDF announced that only humanitarian aid would be allowed into Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing in response to dozens of airborne incendiary objects that Gazans have launched into the Jewish state, incurring extensive damage to Israeli farmlands, and other violent activities in the border region between Israel and the coastal enclave.The army also said that it would no longer permit Gazans to export goods through the crossing.Kerem Shalom is a commercial passageway between Israel and Gaza, which facilitates the movement of the vast majority of goods that enter and exit the coastal enclave.“We reject all the violence and have taken no part in it. So why should we be punished?” Taysir al-Ustaz, the chairman of the Clothing and Textile Industry Union in Gaza, told The Times of Israel. “We also think that poverty begets violence. If we want to prevent violence, we need to make sure people can work and have a livelihood.”In early 2015, Israel permitted Gazans to export clothing and textiles to the Jewish state and West Bank for the first time since 2007, when Hamas took over the Strip in a violent coup.According to Ustaz, since Israel approved clothing and textile exports, the industry has grown significantly.“In the past few years, we have exported $10 million in goods, employed 2,000 additional workers and rehabilitated several factories,” he said. “We hope that Israel’s decision to ban exports is only temporary because we don’t want to lay off workers and close our factories. We want to continue to work with our Israeli partners and develop our businesses.”Muhammed Abu Nahla, the owner of Computer Connect, which imports and sells computer and networking hardware, expressed a similar sentiment about the incendiary objects and violence in the border region.“We do not support violence. We are against it,” he said in a phone call on Wednesday. “But why are they taking measures against us and not the people who are causing the trouble?”Abu Nahla said his company had been expecting thousands of dollars of equipment to arrive through Kerem Shalom on Tuesday.“Our company was planning to receive network and telecom equipment to complete a project that we have been working on for the government of Qatar, but we then found out about Israel’s new measures,” he said. “Without the equipment to finish the project, we will not be paid for the work we have been doing on this project for the past year.”Israel has allowed Gazans to import computer and networking hardware for several years, but has also developed a stringent oversight process on such imports.According to Abu Nahla, who also serves as a board member of the Palestinian Information Technology Association, his company must apply to both the ministries of economy and communications for permission to import computer and networking hardware.“Before I can get a hold of the goods, I need to prove that I have sold them, provide details on who bought them and how they intend to use them,” he said. “The process usually takes several months and I, unlike other merchants, have no stock of goods. That is why we hope the crossing will reopen for all imports soon because my business depends on it.”Abu Nahla also warned that a long-term ban on computer and networking hardware imports could lead to the creation of a black market.“When Israel banned imports through the crossing in 2007, it made room for a tunnel economy,” he said. “There are people who will find a way to bring goods into Gaza illegally and profit from our suffering.”After Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007, Israel only permitted a limited number of goods into the Strip. The Israeli Air Force carried out airstrikes in Syria Wednesday night, targeting regime forces in the Quneitra region near the border, hours after a Syrian drone was shot down by the military after entering Israeli airspace.The military confirmed the bombings in the Syrian Golan, saying they came in response to the drone infiltration.Syrian state news agency SANA claimed Syria’s air defenses blocked the attack near the village of Hader.“The aircraft of the Israeli enemy launches a number of missiles at several army positions” in Quneitra, causing material damage, it said.The IDF Spokesperson’s Office said the army will “continue to act decisively and forcefully against attempts to violate Israeli sovereignty.” It warned the Syrian regime against any attempt to act against Israeli forces.According to the military, shortly after 3:15 p.m. an apparently unarmed Syrian drone entered Israeli airspace from Syria through the demilitarized zone between the two countries, after first passing over Jordan. An Israeli drone fired toward a group of Palestinians flying incendiary balloons into southern Israel from the southern Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian media.No injuries were reported in the airstrike, which was said to have occurred east of the city of Rafah.The Israeli military confirmed that one of its aircraft fired at a cell that had launched balloons toward Israel from the southern Gaza Strip.This was the first such strike by the IDF against Palestinians sending airborne arson devices into Israel in two weeks.Throughout the day on Wednesday, incendiary kites and balloons sparked 19 fires, of varying sizes, in southern Israel, according to local government officials.Fifteen of them occurred in the Eshkol region, which abuts the southern Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday that Israel will not seek to unseat Syrian dictator Bashar Assad from power, while urging Moscow to remove Iranian troops from the country, according to an Israeli official.“We won’t take action against the Assad regime, and you get the Iranians out,” Netanyahu told Putin, the Reuters news agency reported, citing an Israel official who requested anonymity.According to a report last month, Israel’s willingness to leave Assad in power echoes the US position.A Western diplomat told Al-Hayat in June that the US is open to the idea of Assad staying in power and does not oppose the regime retaking all areas it lost to rebels groups during the seven-year civil war.Media reports suggested that at their meeting in Helsinki on Monday, Putin and US President Donald Trump could reach a deal that would envisage the deployment of Syrian government forces alongside the Israeli border and the withdrawal of Iranian forces and their proxy Hezbollah from the area.Both the United States and Israel are concerned about Iran’s growing military presence in Syria, where it has provided crucial aid to Assad’s forces.Israel has repeatedly said it will not allow Iran, or its Shiite proxies, to establish a permanent presence in postwar Syria. BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — An Argentine federal judge investigating the 1994 Buenos Aires AMIA Jewish center bombing has asked Russian officials to arrest a high-level Iranian adviser to the country’s supreme leader in connection with the attack.Ali Akbar Velayati was scheduled to meet with President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday in Moscow. Velayati, who was Iran’s foreign minister at the time of the terrorist attack and has been implicated in ordering the bombing, is now an adviser on international affairs to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.Velayati is among special envoys that Iran is sending to various countries in response to the US withdrawal earlier this year from the 2015 nuclear deal.“After Mr. Trump’s strategic mistake in unilaterally withdrawing, the Islamic Republic of Iran decided to send special envoys to different countries conveying the message of high officials of Iran containing our stances, positions, and approaches towards this arrogant and illegal move of the US,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said in describing the Wednesday visit of Velayati to Moscow.Following news reports of the visit, Judge Rodolfo Canicoba Corral requested the arrest of Velayati. There has been an international arrest warrant against Velayati and seven other Iranian officials since 2006. Palestinian merchants and business leaders in the Gaza Strip expressed frustration on Wednesday over Israel’s new restrictions at the Kerem Shalom commercial crossing, warning the clampdown on imports and exports could significantly damage their business interests and undermine the economic welfare of other Palestinians in the coastal enclave.On Monday, the IDF announced that only humanitarian aid would be allowed into Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing in response to dozens of airborne incendiary objects that Gazans have launched into the Jewish state, incurring extensive damage to Israeli farmlands, and other violent activities in the border region between Israel and the coastal enclave.The army also said that it would no longer permit Gazans to export goods through the crossing.Kerem Shalom is a commercial passageway between Israel and Gaza, which facilitates the movement of the vast majority of goods that enter and exit the coastal enclave.“We reject all the violence and have taken no part in it. So why should we be punished?” Taysir al-Ustaz, the chairman of the Clothing and Textile Industry Union in Gaza, told The Times of Israel. “We also think that poverty begets violence. If we want to prevent violence, we need to make sure people can work and have a livelihood.”In early 2015, Israel permitted Gazans to export clothing and textiles to the Jewish state and West Bank for the first time since 2007, when Hamas took over the Strip in a violent coup.According to Ustaz, since Israel approved clothing and textile exports, the industry has grown significantly.“In the past few years, we have exported $10 million in goods, employed 2,000 additional workers and rehabilitated several factories,” he said. “We hope that Israel’s decision to ban exports is only temporary because we don’t want to lay off workers and close our factories. We want to continue to work with our Israeli partners and develop our businesses.”Muhammed Abu Nahla, the owner of Computer Connect, which imports and sells computer and networking hardware, expressed a similar sentiment about the incendiary objects and violence in the border region.“We do not support violence. We are against it,” he said in a phone call on Wednesday. “But why are they taking measures against us and not the people who are causing the trouble?”Abu Nahla said his company had been expecting thousands of dollars of equipment to arrive through Kerem Shalom on Tuesday.“Our company was planning to receive network and telecom equipment to complete a project that we have been working on for the government of Qatar, but we then found out about Israel’s new measures,” he said. “Without the equipment to finish the project, we will not be paid for the work we have been doing on this project for the past year.”Israel has allowed Gazans to import computer and networking hardware for several years, but has also developed a stringent oversight process on such imports.According to Abu Nahla, who also serves as a board member of the Palestinian Information Technology Association, his company must apply to both the ministries of economy and communications for permission to import computer and networking hardware.“Before I can get a hold of the goods, I need to prove that I have sold them, provide details on who bought them and how they intend to use them,” he said. “The process usually takes several months and I, unlike other merchants, have no stock of goods. That is why we hope the crossing will reopen for all imports soon because my business depends on it.”Abu Nahla also warned that a long-term ban on computer and networking hardware imports could lead to the creation of a black market.“When Israel banned imports through the crossing in 2007, it made room for a tunnel economy,” he said. “There are people who will find a way to bring goods into Gaza illegally and profit from our suffering.”After Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007, Israel only permitted a limited number of goods into the Strip. During that time, smugglers brought millions of dollars of merchandise into the coastal enclave through tunnels connected to the Sinai Peninsula.Maher Tabaa, an official at the Gaza Chamber of Commerce, also warned that if Israel does not lift its new restrictions on imports, certain goods could expire.“There are containers piling up on the Israeli side that are supposed to come to Gaza,” he said on Wednesday. “Some of those containers have products, such as batteries, that will lose value as their expiration date approaches.”On Monday, the military said the restrictions at Kerem Shalom would continue so long as Palestinians persist in launching incendiary kites and balloons into Israel.“In light of this situation in which the Hamas terror group is taking advantage of the residents of the Strip and launching incendiary and explosive kites and balloons at the communities in the Gaza periphery… these steps are being taken,” the army said.“If this phenomenon continues, these steps will continue and even get worse,” the IDF added.Tabaa said a worried merchant had contacted him about $100,000 in batteries for solar panels he was supposed to receive on Tuesday.“These measures are unjust. BRUSSELS, Belgium (AFP) — US President Donald Trump shocked allies at a fraught NATO summit on Wednesday by suddenly demanding that members double their defense spending commitments.Trump’s surprise demand came after he clashed with Chancellor Angela Merkel, calling Germany a “captive” of Russia because of its gas links and singling out Berlin for failing to pay its way.The summit in Brussels is shaping up as the alliance’s most difficult in years, against a backdrop of deepening transatlantic tensions in fields ranging from trade to energy and defense.NATO allies agreed at their Wales summit in 2014 to try to spend two percent of GDP on defense within 10 years, but the White House said Trump suggested that was not enough.“During the president’s remarks today at the NATO summit he suggested that countries not only meet their commitment 2% of their GDP on defense spending, but that they increase it to 4%,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.“The president raised this same issue when he was at NATO last year. President Trump wants to see our allies share more of the burden and at a very minimum meet their already stated obligations.”Bulgarian President Rumen Radev confirmed that Trump had made the demand and asked what it meant for the future of the alliance that has been the bedrock of European security for 70 years.“NATO is not a stock exchange where you can buy security.
