PA to form plan for extensive ‘disengagement’

Palestinian Authority government on Tuesday decided to form a committee
to prepare plans for “disengagement” from Israel.The government also
decided to task another committee with devising a plan to replace the
Israeli shekel with any other currency, including a new Palestinian
one.Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip do not have their own
currency and continue to rely mostly on the Israeli shekel, Jordanian
dinar, and US dollar.PA employees in both the West Bank and Gaza Strip
receive their salaries in shekels.The latest move to disengage from
Israel came in response to a decision last Saturday by the PLO Executive
Committee, a key decision-making body dominated by loyalists of PA
President Mahmoud Abbas. The committee, at the end of a three-hour
meeting chaired by Abbas, asked the PA government to immediately devise
plans for “disengagement” between the Palestinians and Israel on all
levels, including security and economy.The Palestinians have long
complained their economy remains too dependent on Israel.Similar
decisions taken by various Palestinian bodies in the past, including
halting security coordination with Israel, have never been carried out
and are mostly intended to appease the Palestinian public.PA Prime
Minister Rami Hamdallah was quoted at the weekly cabinet meeting as
saying that “settlement expansion” and Israeli military control over
Area C, as well as Israeli restrictions imposed on the Palestinians
living there, constituted the main obstacle to the existence of a strong
Palestinian economy.Under the terms of the Oslo Accords, Area C refers
to those parts of the West Bank that are under full Israeli civil and
security control.Hamdallah called on donor countries to pressure Israel
to remove, and not only ease, all restrictions imposed on Palestinians

various Palestinian projects, including the establishment of an airport
and a seaport in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.The PA government
expressed “deep gratitude” for the EU’s commitment to provide 42.5

government accused the US administration of remaining silent toward
“organized state terrorism that is being perpetrated and encouraged by

last brutal campaign in Jenin and its towns and refugee camp

villages and towns in Jenin and its surrounding villages and towns in
the past two weeks in search of Ahmed Jarrar, the main suspect in the

A former Palestinian intelligence chief and the head
of the West Bank bar association are suing the Palestinian Authority
after a purported whistle blower alleged the two were targeted, along
with many other allies and rivals of PA President Mahmoud Abbas, in a
large-scale CIA-backed wiretapping operation.Allegations of continued
intelligence-sharing with the United States could prove embarrassing for
Abbas, who has been on a political collision course with Washington
since US President Donald Trump’s recognition in December of Jerusalem
as Israel’s capital.The claims are contained in a 37-page anonymous
document that was been shared widely among Palestinians, mostly on
WhatsApp. The document alleges that three of the Palestinian security
services set up a joint electronic surveillance unit in mid-2014 and
monitored the phone calls of thousands of Palestinians, from senior
figures in terror groups to judges, lawyers, civic leaders and political
allies of Abbas.The author describes himself as a former member of the
surveillance unit who quit “this dirty job” several months ago because

transcripts of his phone conversations, as published in the document,
were accurate.“I made these phone calls and this is evidence that the

confirmed that he received the complaint, but declined further

an investigation into the extent of the wiretapping and an explanation

Minister Rami Hamdallah.Jabareen said an investigation must determine
if the wiretapping went beyond monitoring terrorists who pose an

the government might also be spying on other civil society

are being monitored without legal authorization, including those of

Preventive Security Service asked the CIA for help with wiretapping and

funeral Tuesday for a rabbi killed in a West Bank terror attack a day
earlier, escorting the victim as he was laid to rest in the Har Bracha
settlement where he lived.Itamar Ben-Gal, 29, was stabbed to death while
waiting at a hitchhiking post near the settlement of Ariel on Monday,
as he headed to a circumcision ceremony for his nephew. He was survived
by his wife, Miriam, and four children.His suspected killer, Abed
al-Karim Assi, 19, managed to evade capture following the attack, even
after an IDF officer hit him with his car while in pursuit.At the
gravesite, Miriam Ben-Gal said, “Itamar, my dear, we will continue
settling the land and raising our family.”Knesset Speaker Yuli
Edelstein, Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel, and Deputy Defense Minister
Eli Ben Dahan were also at the ceremony.“The country has lost a
righteous person,” Edelstein said in a eulogy for Ben-Gal. “What a
terrible loss. With Miriam, he built a family life… he was a dedicated
teacher who treated each of his students as a son.”“The terrorist saw
the smile that he always had on his face and the light that was always
in his eyes,” he continued. “He tried to wipe off the smile and put out
the light. This was the same desire of the killer of Raziel

in a West Bank shooting attack in January. The prime suspect in that
attack, Ahmad Nassar Jarrar, was shot dead by security forces early
Tuesday morning during an arrest operation in the West Bank city of

lived in Har Bracha, a community of some 2,500 people on the outskirts
of Nablus in the West Bank. He was a middle school teacher at a yeshiva

Israeli education system has lost a great and devoted educator and we
are left orphaned by him.“You were so dedicated to your students’
education. We will continue to take care of your sweet
children.”Speaking at the grave, Ben-Gal’s widow Miriam vowed: “We will
continue settling this land and raising our family.”Assi, the man
suspected of killing Ben-Gal, holds Israeli citizenship and lives in

ID card allowed him passage to both sides of the Green Line. His father

say skeleton of bus-sized plant-eater Mansourasaurus could be the tip of

Egypt (AP) — A skeleton has been unearthed in Egypt’s Western Desert,
whose ancient sands have long helped preserve remains, but unlike most
finds this one isn’t a mummy — it’s a dinosaur.Researchers from Mansoura
University in the country’s Nile Delta discovered the new species of
long-necked herbivore, which is around the size of a city bus, and it
could be just the tip of the sand dune for other desert dinosaur
discoveries.“As in any ecosystem, if we went to the jungle we’ll find a
lion and a giraffe. So we found the giraffe, where’s the lion?” said
Hesham Sallam, leader of the excavation team and head of the
university’s Center for Vertebrate Paleontology.Sallam, along with four
Egyptian and five American researchers, authored an article in the
journal “Nature Ecology & Evolution” published January 29 announcing
the discovery.Experts say the find is a landmark discovery that could
shed light on a particularly obscure period of history for the African
continent, roughly the 30 million years before dinosaurs went extinct,
between 70 and 80 million years ago.Named “Mansourasaurus Shahinae”
after the team’s university and for one of the paleontology department’s
founders, the find is the only dinosaur from that period to have been
discovered in Africa, and it may even be an undiscovered genus.In the
article the authors say the team’s findings “counter hypotheses that
dinosaur faunas of the African mainland were completely isolated” during
the late Mesozoic period. That is, previous theories were that Africa’s
dinosaurs during that time existed as if on an island and developed
independently from their northern cousins.But Mansourasaurus’ fossilized
skeletal remains suggest an anatomy not very different from those
discovered in Europe from the same period, an indication that a land
connection between Africa and its northern neighbor may have
existed.While Egypt has a long history of archaeology, paleontology has
not enjoyed the same popularity — or had the same success.In 1911, the
German paleontologist Ernst Stromer led an exhibition to the oasis of
Bahriya, also in Egypt’s Western Desert. There, he discovered four
species of dinosaurs, including a predatory type known as the
Spinosaurus, all from the Cretaceous period. But all of his findings
were later lost in Allied bombing of the Munich Museum during World War
II.Sallam said researchers don’t know how Mansourasaurus lived and died,
except for the fact that it was a plant eater. There’s no indication
whether it lived alone or in a herd.The bones do bear resemblance to
another dinosaur discovery in Egypt, that of the Paralititan Stromeri,
excavated by an American team from the University of Pennsylvania, whose
findings were published in 2001. But only in so much as both were
long-necked herbivores grazers. The Paralititan Stromeri is believed to
have been among the largest known animals, weighing in at 75 tons and

governor, since she was appointed to the board by president Barack Obama

vehicle, or UAV.The commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards
Corps’ ground forces, Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour, was also at
the event.Hatami boasted that the drone can carry Iran’s home-produced
Qaem smart bombs and that it has various electro-optical sensors for
acquiring stationary and moving targets during night- and daytime
operations.The drone, he said, can also carry out long-range
reconnaissance and combat missions as well as use short runways for
takeoff and landing, Iranian state Press TV reported. It will be
supplied to the Revolution Guard Corps.Hatami did not specify how far
