Iran parades S-300 air defense missiles amid rocketing tensions-Russian-made batteries make first public appearance in Tehran after Trump calls future of nuke deal into question-By Agencies-September 24, 2017, 7:20 pm-TOI

Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard on Sunday publicly displayed the country’s sophisticated Russian-made S-300 air defense system in central Tehran for the first time. The public show in Tehran’s Baharestan square near the Parliament building square exhibited different missile systems, including ballistic missiles, solid-fuel surface-to-surface Sejjil missiles and the liquid-fuel Ghadr. The IRGC prepared the show for the annual Defense Week, marking the 37th anniversary of the 1980s Iran-Iraq war.Iran has previously shown off parts of the S-300 system.Israel had lobbied Russia against selling Iran the advanced air defense system. On Friday, Iran unveiled a ballistic missile capable of reaching Israel and much of the Middle East, drawing anger from the US.Video of the test firing of a Khoramshahr medium-range ballistic missile aired Friday on Iran’s state TV. The time and location of the test were not mentioned in the report. In response, US President Donald Trump issued Iran a stark warning that cast growing uncertainty over whether a nuclear deal clinched with the Islamic Republic would survive after the latest test.“Iran just test-fired a Ballistic Missile capable of reaching Israel. They are also working with North Korea. Not much of an agreement we have!” Trump tweeted on Saturday. The test came at the end of a heated week of diplomacy at the UN General Assembly in New York, where Trump again accused Iran of destabilizing the Middle East, calling it a “rogue state whose chief exports are violence, bloodshed and chaos.”Previous Iranian missile launches have triggered US sanctions and accusations that they violate the spirit of the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers.Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif told CNN the weapons were only defensive measures, in an interview aired Sunday.Iran, which fought a war with neighboring Iraq in the 1980s, sees missiles as a legitimate and vital part of its defense — particularly as regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Israel import huge amounts of military hardware from the West.Trump has threatened to trash the nuclear agreement altogether, saying Iran is developing missiles that may be used to deliver a nuclear warhead when the deal’s restrictions are lifted in 2025.Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman denounced the test as a “provocation” aimed at the United States and its allies, including the Jewish state.

Iran guards flex muscle ahead of Kurdish independence vote-Troops hold drill near Iranian Kurdish region amid fears of instability over Monday poll; Turkish paper says referendum a Zionist plot-By AP and TOI staff-September 24, 2017, 4:07 pm

Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard launched a military exercise Sunday in its northwestern Kurdish region just ahead of Iraqi Kurds voting in an independence referendum, in a sign of Tehran’s concerns over the vote.Iran also closed its airspace Sunday to flights taking off from Iraq’s Kurdish region following an Iraqi request, “due to the ineffectiveness of our political efforts and the insistence of Kurdistan authorities to hold a referendum.”Iraq’s Kurds are set to vote Monday in a referendum on support for independence. The Kurds are likely to approve the referendum, but the non-binding vote is not expected to result in any formal declaration of independence. The Guard, a paramilitary force answerable only to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on its website that airborne and missile units would take part in the exercise. State television aired footage of explosions and smoke rising as part of the drill, in the mountains of Iran’s own Kurdish region.“We are holding a drill here,” Gen. Mohammad Pakpour, the commander of the Guard’s ground forces, said in the footage. “God willing, artillery, armored (divisions), drones and commandos will hold a well-coordinated exercise.”Turkey, which is also home to a large Kurdish minority and opposes the vote, is holding military drills near its own border with Iraq.On Saturday, Turkey’s parliament voted to extend a mandate that allows it to deploy troops in Iraq and Syria.A bill read in the Turkish parliament included a reference to the threat of “separatism based on ethnicity,” the Qatari broadcaster Al-Jazeera reported.Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency reported that the Supreme National Security Council closed Iranian airspace to the Iraqi Kurdish area at the request of the central government in Baghdad.Iran and Iraq have been close allies since the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq toppled dictator Saddam Hussein. Both are opposed to Kurdish independence, and Baghdad has said the referendum is unconstitutional. In a rare moment of agreement, Saudi Arabia has come out on the same side as its arch regional rival, Iran. It has publicly called for the vote not to move forward, citing current regional conditions and the potential for the vote to ignite a new crisis. The 57-nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Sunday also voiced its “deep concern” over the planned referendum, saying it runs against the constitution of Iraq and could have a negative impact on Iraq’s ability to fight terrorism.Monday’s Kurdish referendum has stirred fears of instability across the region as the war against the Islamic State group winds down. The Kurds are likely to approve the referendum, but the non-binding vote is not expected to result in any formal declaration of independence.Initial results from the poll are expected on Tuesday, with the official results announced later in the week. The government in Baghdad has warned it will respond militarily to any violence resulting from the vote. The United States and the United Nations have condemned the referendum as well.Denied independence when colonial powers drew the map of the Middle East after World War I, the Kurds form a sizable minority in Turkey, Iran, Syria, and Iraq. They have long been at odds with the Baghdad government over the sharing of oil revenues and the fate of disputed territories such as the city of Kirkuk, which are expected to take part in the vote.“There are pressures on us to postpone, to engage in dialogue with Baghdad, but we will not go back to a failed experiment,” Masoud Barzani, the Kurdish regional president, said to roars of applause at a rally of tens of thousands in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish region, on Friday evening. The idea of Kurdish independence has won cautious support among Israeli leaders, who see an independent Kurdistan as a potential ally in a region where most countries have shunned the Jewish state.Yeni Safak, a conservative Turkish newspaper loyal to Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Sunday pointed the presence of Israeli flags alongside “so-called Kurdish flags” at rallies organized by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and claimed that the referendum was part of a Zionist plot.“Israel, using Masoud Barzani and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terrorist organization as pawns, seeks to obtain the area between the Nile and Euphrates, which is regarded as ‘the promised land’ in the Torah,” said an article entitled “Barzani plans to deliver ‘promised land’ to Israel.”It added, “Zionists call the ‘Kurdistan’ that Barzani and the PKK want to establish as ‘Kurdo-Judaic,’ the ‘Jewish Kurdistan.’”Ten days ago, Turkish media published conspiracy theories claiming that Israel was planning to repatriate Israeli Jews of Kurdish origin to Kurdistan after the referendum.

Nukes of hazard-The press tries to answer whether North Korea and Iran are two separate threats or one big ball of Trumphurt -- and which is a bigger concern? The Nazis, of course-By Joshua Davidovich    September 24, 2017, 1:30 pm-TOI

Who would win in a fight: North Korea, Iran, or an earthquake? That seems to be the question at the center of Israel’s print press Sunday morning, after a long hiatus thanks to the Rosh Hoshanah holiday and amid ever-rising tensions between Washington and Pyongyang, and maybe Tehran too. With US President Donald Trump and North Korea’s leadership trading barbs and Iran testing a new missile, two out of the three main dailies (Haaretz and Yedioth Ahronoth) focus mostly on nuclear saber-rattling with North Korea, while only Israel Hayom makes a mostly silly debate explicit with a front-page headline reading “North Korea is dangerous, Iran is much more so.”The headline sounds like a continuation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s attempts to lobby the US to deal with Iran and forget about North Korea, and the column attached to the headline (because who wants news on the front page after 4 days without?), by former Netanyahu national security aide Yaakov Amidror, continues that theme.“If you want to understand Iran you need to look at what North Korea is doing, except Iran is bigger, stronger and has much more potential,” he writes, before issuing what sounds like a challenge to the US. “It seems that if the US won’t do anything about countries like Iran and North Korea, no other power will. And the US is wavering. It will be interesting to see what it will do now, after the aggressive things said by the president at the UN, before the Iranians showed their disregard for them by launching a missile test right afterward. For Israel this is a critical question, since an American decision not to do anything will force Israel to think differently on what it should do in the future, on its own.”Both Yedioth and Haaretz, meanwhile, focus on what might be entertaining if it weren’t so scary, the intercontinental insult and threat battle taking place between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.Yedioth quotes from some of the best one-liners on its front page, but inside the paper it also links North Korea to Iran, calling it a “double, immediate threat,” which sounds worse than the double secret probation in “Animal House.” In an accompanying column, Alex Fishman writes that the Iranians are learning what to do from the North Koreans, calling the Khoramshahr ballistic missile tested by Iran “clearly North Korean, and showing the close cooperation between the countries.”Fishman’s own column appears to reveal close cooperation between him and Israeli officials with an agenda/bone to pick, with him blaming that ayatollah-lover Barack Obama for Israel’s Iran woes.“Back in 2013, when an interim deal was signed between the powers and Iran, it was known to Israel that representatives of Obama and Iran put together a secret side deal, and even then it was known the Iranian got secret American agreement to develop missiles with a range of up to 2,000 kilometers. At the same time, Iran was developing missiles with a range of between 2,500 and 5,000 kilometers, which could get to the Europe and the US,” Fishman writes, apparently not realizing that Iran would need twice that distance to reach the US. “The Americans put a red line on the Iranians in the secret talks: Not to the US and not to Europe, but up to 2,000 kilometers, the exact effective distance to Iran’s main enemy: Israel. And if you want, also Saudi Arabia.”While Haaretz gives plenty of space to the North Korean taunt-fest and the Iranian missile, it also shows that it didn’t stop paying attention to the UN once Netanyahu left, covering Trump’s meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The paper reports that not much is known about what happened in the meeting beyond Trump telling Abbas the US is working on a new peace plan but needs more time. At the same time, it notes that Ramallah believes the US is on-board with reconciliation between Abbas and the Hamas terror group.“The PA attaches great importance to the fact that both the White House and State Department have thus far said nothing in response to media reports of a new Egyptian effort to reconcile the PA and Hamas. The Palestinian leadership sees the absence of US criticism of the reconciliation effort as a de facto green light for the move,” the paper reports.Looking at Abbas’s speech to the UN, Jacky Khoury notes that the Palestinian leader put the one-state solution on the table, and while this isn’t the first time he’s threatened to throw it all in, frustration is certainly growing.“The hope Abbas instilled in the international community has vanished. He made clear that even if the world gives up on the two-state solution, some 6.5 million Palestinians still live between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River,” he writes. “In his speech, Abbas implied that they will not disappear, evaporate or be expelled. Instead, they will demand their full rights. Israel, the United States and the international community will have to figure out how to accomplish that.”For all of the fights Trump is waging, or possibly trying to end, the one he’ll never win is against mother nature, as evidenced by the havoc wreaked by an earthquake in Mexico that also continues to gain top real estate in the Israeli press, mostly thanks to Israeli rescuers dispatched to the Latin American country.A rah-rah Yedioth calls the rescuers “Angels in orange” in a two-page spread that is mostly pictures, and Israel Hayom is no less proud with its own double page spread, including an article focusing on the six females in the group of 70 rescuers.“We do exactly the same as any other officer in a rescue corps,” one tells the paper. “I trained for this three and a half years, to carry equipment, to see unpleasant sights and to work with heavy tools, just like any other rescue officer or soldier. A rescue female does the exact same as a rescue man.”-Back to the brownshirts?-The papers are less excited about German elections, where Chancellor Angela Merkel is expected to keep her seat and the far-right AfD is expected to enter the Bundestag. It’s the first victory that mostly concerns Israel Hayom columnist Eldad Beck, who says that with Merkel likely not going anywhere soon, Israel will need to work on finding a way to improve its ties with Berlin.Meanwhile, it’s the rise of the anti-Semitic AfD that forms the crux of worries in Haaretz and Yedioth, informed by the weight of the country’s history. In Haaretz, Ofer Aderet says AfD’s rise isn’t just about getting rid of migrants or Jews, but speaks to a larger malaise against the establishment in Germany.“Not all AfD candidates or voters are anti-Semites, neo-Nazis and racists (although some definitely are). But as in other places in the past and present, anger and disgust have united different groups against a common enemy, whether real or imagined,” he writes.A column in Yedioth by Ofra Pasdar, one of tens of thousands of Israelis living in Berlin, meanwhile, speaks to the strange feeling of being in Germany at a time when a party seen as the forebears of Nazi ideology are back in business.“Seventy years after my grandmother on my mother’s side, who grew up in Germany in a German family, decided to leave her heritage and her nation and tie her fate to the Jewish people in Israel so that she would never be complacent, I find myself going around in a country where the noise in the streets comes from Oktoberfest celebrations and not from campaign advertising and rallies, a land where the streets are clean, quiet, decorated with little election pamphlets, colorful and aesthetic,” she writes. “It’s hard not to move in this beautiful country with discomfort from the voices coming out of the campaign.”

Islamic State fighter challenges Prince Harry to fight-Singaporean member of Syria-based jihadist group says British royal should 'come here and fight us if you're man enough'-By AFP-September 24, 2017, 6:04 pm

A Singaporean member of the Islamic State group in Syria has appeared in a video challenging Britain’s Prince Harry to fight the jihadists, a monitoring group and authorities said Sunday. It is believed to be the first time that a fighter from the affluent city-state has featured prominently in one of the Islamic State group’s videos. In the English-language video released Saturday, a man identified as “Abu ‘Uqayl” from Singapore took issue with Prince Harry talking about a terror attack in London while on a visit to Singapore in June.“Why don’t you come here and fight us if you’re man enough, so that we can send you and your Apaches to hellfire, biidhnillah (Allah permitting)?” he said in the video, which appeared on the closed SITE Intelligence Group website, but was not made available to the public.Prince Harry formerly served in the British army and flew Apache attack helicopters in Afghanistan. The royal’s visit to the city-state in June was overshadowed by an Islamic State group-claimed terror attack in London. The attack saw knife-wielding men mow down and stab revelers on a night out, killing seven before they were gunned down by police.Singapore’s interior ministry said it believed the person in the video was a Singaporean.“Our security agencies have been aware for some time now of the presence in Syria of a Singaporean, Megat Shahdan bin Abdul Samad, 39, and have been monitoring his activities,” the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement.“It is believed that the person in the video calling himself ‘Abu Uqayl’ is Shahdan.”Singapore’s leaders have warned that the city is a prime target for a terror attack because of its strong stand against terrorism and reputation as a regional financial center.

North Korea stages anti-US rally as war of words escalates-After Kim Jong Un's foreign minister says attack on US 'inevitable,' Trump warns 'Little Rocket Man' Korea may 'not be around much longer'-By AP and TOI staff-September 24, 2017, 7:50 am

North Korea has held a large anti-US rally in its capital city, backing its leader Kim Jong Un as he exchanges insult-laden threats with US President Donald Trump.A huge crowd gathered Saturday in Pyongyang’s Kim ll Sung Square, named for the current leader’s grandfather and founder of North Korea. They listened to speeches from senior officials excoriating the United States and its president.Trump has meanwhile hit back at comments made by North Korea’s top brass in an escalating war of words between the two countries. On Tuesday, Trump told the UN General Assembly that “Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and his regime.” Kim responded by calling him a “mentally deranged US dotard,” after which Trump hit back with “madman.”On Saturday, speaking after American bombers and fighter escorts had flown to the farthest point north of the border between North and South Korea by any such US aircraft this century, North Korea’s foreign minister, Ri Yong Ho, told the UN General Assembly that it was “inevitable” North Korea would fire rockets at the US.Later Saturday, Trump was back on Twitter with the message, “Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at UN.  If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won’t be around much longer!”Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won't be around much longer!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 24, 2017-During Saturday’s march in Pyongyang, marchers carried signs with slogans such as “decisive revenge” and “death to the American imperialists.” They shouted phrases such as “total destruction,” according to the Korean Central News Agency, the state news service. The crowd included workers, officials and students, KCNA said. The rally capped two days of response to Trump’s combative speech at the United Nations.

Iraq says it wants world’s help to build nuclear reactor-Over 35 years after Israeli strike on Osirak, oil-rich country still partially held by IS says it has rights to nuclear power under NonProliferation Treaty-By AP and TOI staff-September 24, 2017, 3:06 am

NEW YORK — Iraq’s foreign minister asked nuclear countries for help building a nuclear reactor Saturday, over 35 years after Israeli jets destroyed the country’s first attempt to build a nuclear program.Ibrahim al-Jaafari made the request in his speech Saturday to the UN General Assembly’s annual meeting of presidents, prime ministers and monarchs. He called for assistance “to build a nuclear reactor for peaceful purposes in Iraq, to acquire this nuclear technology.”Former Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein’s previous efforts to build a nuclear reactor were met with an Israeli airstrike on the Osirak nuclear facility in 1981 and years of suspicion about his nuclear intentions. While the international community initially condemned Israel for the airstrike, some 10 years later, Dick Cheney, the US secretary of defense at the time, thanked Israel for the raid, according to David Ivry, who was the head of Israel’s air force at the time.Israeli Air Force footage taken during the strike on Osirak:The US cited concerns that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction as the basis for invading Iraq in 2003, but none were ever found.Al-Jaafari cited the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty’s provisions allowing countries to pursue peaceful nuclear energy projects. Iraq ratified the treaty in 1969.Non-nuclear nations that signed it agreed to not pursue atomic weapons. In exchange, the five original nuclear powers — the US, Russia, Britain, France and China — promised to move toward nuclear disarmament and to guarantee non-nuclear states access to peaceful nuclear technology for producing power. It wasn’t immediately clear how other nations would greet the request from oil-rich Iraq, which is emerging from a bloody, chaotic period after Islamic State extremists seized swaths of the country in 2014. They created a regime of atrocities, including mass killings, beheadings and rapes.US-backed Iraqi forces have now driven IS from most of the Iraqi territory it took, although the group still controls some pockets, as well as territory in Syria.Al-Jaafari emphasized the improving situation in the country and asked for the international community’s help in rebuilding areas reclaimed from the militants.“We give great importance to freeing our society from the culture of hatred and murder that was disseminated by (IS),” he said. “In order to counter these practices, we need the assistance of the international community to provide services.”-Opposition to Kurdish vote-Al-Jaafari also reiterated his government’s opposition to Iraqi Kurds’ planned independence vote next week, saying officials “wish to preserve the unity of Iraq.”Kurds are an ethnic group with populations in Iraq, Syria, Iran and Turkey, and they have an autonomous region in northern Iraq. They have long aspired to statehood, and the referendum could be a significant step. The central government views the vote as unconstitutional and divisive. Iraq’s top court has temporarily suspended the vote, and the country’s parliament has also voted to reject it. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has even said he’s prepared to intervene militarily if the vote leads to violence.Kurdish officials have continued to say the vote will be held nonetheless. The UN Security Council expressed concern Thursday about that the vote, saying it could be destabilizing. The council instead urged dialogue between the Kurds and the central government.

Here's what could happen if North Korea detonates a hydrogen bomb-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-September 23, 2017

Razed cities. Loss of life. Contaminated fishing stocks. Crippled satellite networks. Should the nuclear crisis between the United States and North Korea escalate beyond hurling test missiles and insults like "madman" and "dotard," the list of possible effects is a long and frightening one.Whether North Korea were to simply test a nuclear warhead or aim one at a target like the U.S. territory of Guam — as North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has threatened — there would be consequences for both people and the environment. It's impossible to predict precisely the effects of a North Korean nuclear blast because so much depends on the type, size and method and elevation of the detonation, says Danny Lam, a Calgary-based defence analyst with a PhD in environmental engineering. But using as a guide the size of the nuclear test North Korea conducted Sept. 3 — estimated at 250 kilotonnes — some idea of the scope of the damage can be estimated."These are not toys," says Lam, who recently testified before the House of Commons defence committee convened to discuss North Korean aggression. "These are big massive weapons that generate massive effects. These are big city busters."North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho has said the country will perform an atmospheric test of a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean, after claiming a successful underground test of a hydrogen bomb in early September. Hydrogen bombs have a far larger yield than traditional weapons. But it's not known if the nation has the technology to make a bomb small enough to fit on a missile. Its missile testing in the Pacific has sent unarmed missiles into the Earth's atmosphere, but some seemed to have a range that could reach the West Coast of the U.S.-Nuclear fallout zone-Should Kim make good on his threat to target Guam with a nuclear bomb the size of the Sept. 3 test, it would generate a fireball covering an area of 1.6 square kilometres and result in close to 100 per cent loss of life within six square kilometres, Lam says. Most residential buildings within 26 square kilometres would collapse, and prevailing winds would carry residual radioactive material about 270 kilometres northeast of the island. In the 1950s, a series of nuclear tests in Bikini Atoll, part of the Pacific's Marshall Islands, were much bigger than North Korea's most recent test. But they rendered the whole area unlivable due to contaminated soil and water that made farming and fishing dangerous. Eventually all residents had to be relocated and they have not returned. For context, it's important to know that the world has already seen testing of nuclear weapons far bigger than what North Korea is known to have, says Lam, and it hasn't caused widespread radiation sickness or environmental devastation beyond the blast area."If they launched the warhead, we can safely say that it be real bad for any persons nearby … but it is probably not a big deal in terms of radiation release except for the local area."An atmospheric nuclear test would be far more dangerous than detonations in controlled underground environments, because of the force of the blast and unrestrained release of radioactive materials that could spread out over large areas. Such a launch would potentially endanger aircraft and ships because it's highly unlikely the North would give prior warnings or send naval vessels to the area to control sea traffic.Lee Choon Geun, a missile expert from South Korea's Science and Technology Policy Institute, says missile tests can easily go wrong, and the consequences of failure could be terrifying if the missile is armed with a nuclear weapon. If a misfire comes close to Japan, that could trigger retaliation from Washington, he told Reuters.-Electromagnetic pulse-Much more threatening to the broader world is the potential damage from an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) triggered by an atmospheric nuclear blast, says Peter Vincent Pry, executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security in the U.S.EMP is a burst of electromagnetic energy that destroys or damages satellite networks. If North Korea was to detonate a certain kind of EMP-emitting bomb at high altitude, the low-earth orbit satellites would be destroyed or damaged, says Pry. "And they are vital to our ability to defend South Korea; they're vital to our economy.""Even the GPS systems in automobiles, airplanes depend on these satellites. Our communications, both commercial and military, depend on these satellites," says Pry, who has served on several congressional committees on EMP and other aspects of defense. That means, not only would your cellphone network be down at home, military who normally perform high-tech targeted missions wouldn't have the satellite data they rely upon to do so.Without those space systems, the U.S. and its allies would move backward to an industrial-era military forced to counter threats like those from North Korea the old-fashioned way — through sheer numbers. "We'd be worse off, because we don't train for that kind of war and they do."There's a reason that the comprehensive nuclear-test ban treaty forbids this kind of high atmosphere tests, says Lam."We haven't had this type of horror really since [the Second World War] and we'd much prefer we never see it again."

Apocalypse Now? Doomsday Predictions Are Just Recycled Bogus Theories-By Stephanie Pappas, LiveScience Contributor | September 23, 2017 09:21am ET

Old doomsday predictions never die. They just get recycled.Just six years after radio preacher Harold Camping promised the apocalypse, and five years after the end of the Mayan calendar was supposed to extinguish life on Earth as we know it, new doomsday predictions have arrived. This time, they come via YouTube and a man named David Meade, who claims that the first spiritual sign of the apocalypse will arrive today (Sept. 23).Meade's theories meld biblical prophecy with astronomy. He claims that on Sept. 23, there will be a rare alignment of the sun in the constellation Virgo — with the moon just to the east — with nine stars and three planets (Mercury, Venus and Mars) clustering around the constellation's head, like a crown. This is supposed to be the sign foretold in the beginning of Revelation 12, which reads, in the New International Version of the Bible: "A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth." [Doomsdays: Top 9 Real Ways the World Could End]-The date, Sept. 23, is 33 days after the total solar eclipse that crossed the United States in August. That number is meaningful to Meade because Jesus Christ is said to have been 33 when he died. This astronomical sign, Meade said, is evidence that the end is near. In October, he said, the mysterious Planet X will pass close to Earth, which will mark the beginning of seven years of Tribulation — a period of time that some say will be full of hardships before the second coming of Christ — followed by the rapture of true believers to heaven and a millennium of peace. [Oops! 11 Failed Doomsday Predictions]-Astronomy plus apocalypse-Meade's theories echo a lot of ideas that have been floating around conspiracy and doomsday circles for years. Planet X, sometimes known as Nibiru, was supposed to have crashed into Earth during the Mayan apocalypse of 2012 or maybe in 2011, or was it 2003? The problem with this idea is that a rogue planet hurtling toward Earth just doesn't exist. The hysteria over the mythical planet got so pitched in 2011 that NASA scientist David Morrison made a YouTube video to explain that Nibiru isn't real, and that if a giant planetary object were zooming through the solar system, it would be easily visible from Earth and easily detectable from gravitational changes in the orbits of planets in our solar system. (Confusing matters, there is a possible "Planet X" beyond Pluto, but astronomers have not proved its existence yet. If it exists, it orbits far at the outskirts of the solar system. "Planet X" is what scientists call possible planets that have yet to be identified.)-Eclipses, too, have long been associated with the end. According to the writings of 16th-century Franciscan friar Bernardino de Sahagún, Aztecs made human sacrifices during a total solar eclipse, fearing that if they did not, the darkness would never lift. "It was thus said: 'If the eclipse of the sun is complete, it will be dark forever! The demons of darkness will come down. They will eat men,'" de Sahagún wrote. The Vikings, too, felt they had to do something to prevent perpetual darkness — in their mythology, a wolf named Skoll was eating the sun, and they had to make noise to scare the monstrous beast away, lest the sun vanish forever.Total eclipses, though, are visible from someplace on Earth roughly every 18 months. The alignment of the sun in Virgo is not particularly rare, either — it happens once a year, every September. Earth's view of the sun's relationship to the stars simply changes as it moves through its yearly orbit. That's why astrologers developed the concept of the 12-month zodiac.Nor are the other stellar alignments around Virgo on the 23rd that unusual, according to EarthSky. The moon passes through every constellation of the zodiac throughout the month, so it's regularly just east of Virgo. The crown of 12 stars upon Virgo's head on the 23rd is an arbitrary designation, according to EarthSky, because there are more than nine stars in the constellation Leo, which is supposed to make up the stellar portion of the crown. [Monsters of the Night Sky: Strange Constellations to See in Fall]-What's more, this exact arrangement of stars and planets has happened before, EarthSky found. In the past 1,000 years alone, it occurred in 1827, 1483, 1293 and 1056.    -Biblical predictions-Repetition doesn't appear to faze Meade. When asked by Live Science whether the failed Planet X predictions of recent years gave him any pause in his own prognostications, he responded by email, "There's never been a year like 2017. Read my book."  In fact, there's plenty of evidence that failed doomsday predictions don't do much to forestall future "prophets." Nineteenth-century preacher William Miller, founder of the group that would eventually become the Seventh-day Adventists, predicted doomsday in 1843, then in 1844, and died five years later, still thinking the end was nigh. Camping, who took out billboards to advertise the supposed coming apocalypse in 2011, had previously promised the end of the world in 1994. (Camping died in 2013.) In one famous 1954 case, a woman named Dorothy Martin convinced her followers that although the end of the world was coming, a UFO would drop by to save them. When nothing happened on the appointed date, Martin and her followers decided not that they'd been wrong, but that their faith had saved the world from doom. A psychologist who had infiltrated the group wrote about their reaction in the book "When Prophecy Fails" (Harper-Torchbooks, 1956)."The real tragedy of this kind of thinking is that many people do take it seriously," said Allen Kerkeslager, a comparative religion professor at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. Sometimes a mythical apocalypse really does become the end of the world, at least for believers. Between A.D. 66 and 73, the Jews of Judea revolted against their Roman occupiers, Kerkeslager said, bolstered by prophecies that promised that their struggle was part of a great End Times battle and that God would rescue them at the last minute. God did not, and tens of thousands died."There are so many past cases showing that no amount of contrary evidence or failed prophecies will ever deter some of the people who believe that the Bible has codes about an apocalyptic end that will leave their own group triumphant," Kerkeslager told Live Science in an email. "For such people, there is no need to negotiate or compromise in delicate international political crises and arms races, no need to work out peaceful resolutions with countries deemed somehow part of an 'axis of evil,' and no need for concern with environmental problems such as the impact of human-caused climate change on a planet that is going to be destroyed and recreated anyway. So all of this does have very real and very dangerous negative social implications."-Apocalypse everywhere-For most people, it's easy to dismiss Meade, and certainly the idea that the world will enter its last throes tomorrow has no more to back it up than the umpteen failed predictions that came before it. But apocalyptic thinking is everywhere, said Robert Joustra, a political scientist at Redeemer University College in Ontario and co-author of the book "How to Survive the Apocalypse:Zombies, Cylons, Faith, and Politics at the End of the World" ( Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing, 2016).Postapocalyptic shows like "The Walking Dead" or "The Leftovers" are a secular way of dealing with the same questions that the Book of Revelation would have been written to answer, Joustra said: What is the point of all this suffering? What is the meaning of life? How should we live now, in the midst of all our struggles? The symbolism in the apocalyptic Book of Revelation would have had a very different meaning to the early, badly persecuted Christians who read it compared to people of the 21st century, Joustra said. They would have taken certain numbers, like 7, to represent perfection and completion, not as an invitation to start pulling out the calculator to predict the date of the rapture. For them, Revelation would have offered a measure of comfort, promising that their suffering under Roman rule would eventually amount to victory and eternal peace.A more individualistic approach to the apocalypse dominates today's pop culture, Joustra said. Ever since the invention of the atomic bomb, he said, mainstream apocalypse narratives have shifted from something that God will do to something humans will cause. The question then becomes what sort of person an individual will be once you strip away laws, institutions and social mores, he said. [Doom and Gloom: 10 Post-Apocalyptic Worlds]It's a concept that would have flummoxed the ancients, Joustra said. For example, the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotlebelieved that humans were defined by their relationships, institutions and communities. Stripping those things away and then asking what was left would be almost nonsensical, Joustra said."It's a much more individualistic way of thinking about human nature and the apocalypse that I think is different from anything else in human history," he said.Original article on Live Science.

Christian conspiracy theorists have gathered clues that suggest the end of the world is nigh-By Amanda Devlin-24th September 2017, 2:50 pm-Updated: 24th September 2017, 3:01 pm-THE SUN

THE end of the world as we know it could be imminent as conspiracy theorists claim a mysterious planet will collide with Earth TODAY.Bible passages apparently supporting a centuries-old prediction about doomsday have intrigued many — but what’s it all about? Predictions that the end of the world in nigh have been stirred after a date matched quotes in the Bible - Predictions that the end of the world in nigh have been stirred after a date matched quotes in the Bible - Is the end of the world on September 23? A Christian numerologist claims a verse in the Bible proves that the world will end on September 23.In Luke’s passage 21: 25 to 26, there is a quote which apparently matches the date of the Great American Solar Eclipse, when Hurricane Harvey hit and when Texas was flooded. It reads: “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars.“On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.“People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.”September 23 was pinpointed using codes from the Bible and also a “date marker” shown by the pyramids of Giza in Egypt. But NASA has dismissed the claims, insisting the Planet X theory is merely a hoax.APOCALYPSE WHEN? Five times the world was supposed to end (but didn’t)… from alien invasions to man-made black holes-What is David Meade’s theory about Planet X and the Great American solar eclipse? Conspiracies about the mysterious planet named Nibiru suggest it could be headed towards Earth to destroy it on September 23.It was first mentioned in 1976 by author Zecharia Sitchin in his book The 12th Planet. He believed the planet is home to ancient aliens called the Annunaki who he claimed created the human race.As the date fast approaches, Christian conspiracy theorist David Meade expects Nibiru, also known as Planet X, will pass the Earth – bringing with it volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and earthquakes.Meade buys into the idea that a 2,000-year-old prophecy, which was described in the book of Revelation, will cause an apocalypse.Conspirators say Earth will be destroyed by Planet X-Conspirators say Earth will be destroyed by Planet X-He wrote a book called Planet X – The 2017 Arrival – insisting Nibiru would crash into Earth in October, but then moved it forward by a few weeks. His theory was given a boost this year when NASA discovered a new planet in the solar system, which they named Planet Nine.Meade has been quoted previously saying: “It is very strange indeed that both the Great Sign of Revelation 12 and the Great Pyramid of Giza both point us to one precise moment in time – September 20 to 23, 2017.”The prediction that Planet X will collide with Earth and destroy it has been rumbling around for years – but every doomsday has come and gone so far. What has the Great American solar eclipse got to do with the end of the world? On August 21, 2017, millions of Americans saw one of nature’s most astonishing sights — a total eclipse of the Sun.While many were in awe of the unusual moment in history, theorists believe it signalled the start of the Apocalypse by being the day Planet x entered the solar system.Meade told The Daily Star: “The Great American Eclipse of August 21, 2017, is a major – huge – harbinger.”

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Aid begins to flow to hurricane-hit Puerto Rico-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-September 24, 2017

GUAJATACA, Puerto Rico — Large amounts of federal aid began moving into Puerto Rico on Saturday, welcomed by local officials who praised the Trump administration's response but called for the emergency loosening of rules long blamed for condemning the U.S. territory to second-class status. In northwest Puerto Rico, people began returning to their homes after a spillway eased pressure on a dam that cracked after more than a foot of rain fell in the wake of the hurricane. The opening of the island's main port in the capital allowed 11 ships to bring in 1.6 million gallons of water, 23,000 cots, dozens of generators and food. Dozens more shipments are expected in upcoming days. The federal aid effort is racing to stem a growing humanitarian crisis in towns left without fresh water, fuel, electricity or phone service. Officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is in charge of the relief effort, said they would take satellite phones to all of Puerto Rico's towns and cities, more than half of which were cut off following Maria's devastating crossing of Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The island's infrastructure was in sorry shape long before Maria struck. A $73 billion debt crisis has left agencies like the state power company broke. As a result the power company abandoned most basic maintenance in recent years, leaving the island subject to regular blackouts.A federal control board overseeing Puerto Rico's finances authorized up to $1 billion in local funds to be used for hurricane response, but Gov. Ricardo Rossello said he would ask for more."We're going to request waivers and other mechanisms so Puerto Rico can respond to this crisis," he said. "Puerto Rico will practically collect no taxes in the next month."U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez of New York said she will request a one-year waiver from the Jones Act, a federal law blamed for driving up prices on Puerto Rico by requiring cargo shipments there to move only on U.S. vessels as a means of supporting the U.S. maritime industry."We will use all our resources," Velazquez said. "We need to make Puerto Rico whole again. These are American citizens."A group of anxious mayors arrived in the capital to meet with Rossello to present a long list of items they urgently need. The north coastal town of Manati had run out of fuel and fresh water, Mayor Jose Sanchez Gonzalez said."Hysteria is starting to spread. The hospital is about to collapse. It's at capacity," he said, crying. "We need someone to help us immediately."The death toll from Maria in Puerto Rico was at least 10, including two police officers who drowned in floodwaters in the western town of Aguada. That number was expected to climb as officials from remote towns continued to check in with officials in San Juan.Authorities in the town of Vega Alta on the north coast said they had been unable to reach an entire neighbourhood called Fatima, and were particularly worried about residents of a nursing home."I need to get there today," Mayor Oscar Santiago told The Associated Press. "Not tomorrow, today."Rossello said Maria would clearly cost more than the last major storm to wallop the island, Hurricane George in September 1998. "This is without a doubt the biggest catastrophe in modern history for Puerto Rico," he said.Rossello and other officials praised the federal government for planning its response in detail before the storm hit, a contrast with what Puerto Rico has long seen as the neglect of 3.4 million Americans living in a territory without a vote in Congress or the electoral college."This is the first time we get this type of federal co-ordination ," said Resident Commission Jenniffer Gonzalez, Puerto Rico's non-voting representative in Washington.A dam upstream of the towns of Quebradillas and Isabela in northwest Puerto Rico was cracked but had not burst by Saturday night as water continued to pour out of rain-swollen Lake Guajataca. Federal officials said Friday that 70,000 people, the number who live in the surrounding area, would have to be evacuated. But Javier Jimenez, mayor of the nearby town of San Sebastian, said he believed the number was far smaller.Secretary of Public Affairs Ramon Rosario said about 300 families were in harm's way.The governor said there is "significant damage" to the dam and authorities believe it could give way at any moment. "We don't know how long it's going to hold. The integrity of the structure has been compromised in a significant way," Rossello said. Some residents nonetheless returned to their homes Saturday as the water levels in the reservoir began to sink."There were a lot of people worried and crying, but that's natural, because the reservoir was about to break through," said Maria Nieves, 43. "They couldn't open the spillway until later in the night."The 345-yard (316-meter) dam, which was built around 1928, holds back a man-made lake covering about 2 square miles (5 square kilometres ). More than 15 inches (nearly 40 centimetres ) of rain from Maria fell on the surrounding mountains.Officials said 1,360 of the island's 1,600 cellphone towers were downed, and 85 per cent of above-ground and underground phone and internet cables were knocked out. With roads blocked and phones dead, officials said, the situation may worsen. At least 31 lives in all have been lost around the Caribbean due to Maria, including at least 15 on hard-hit Dominica. Haiti reported three deaths; Guadeloupe, two; and the Dominican Republic, one.Across Puerto Rico, more than 15,000 people are in shelters, including some 2,000 rescued from the north coastal town of Toa Baja. Many Puerto Ricans planned to head to the mainland to temporarily escape the devastation.____Coto reported from San Juan.Christopher Gillette And Danica Coto, The Associated Press.

Hurricane Irma floods, causes problems, in one cemetery-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-September 24, 2017

IMMOKALEE, Fla. — A cemetery owned and maintained by a Southwest Florida county was hit hard by Hurricane Irma and relatives of the people buried there say some of the caskets have been partially unearthed. The Naples Daily News reports Lake Trafford Memorial Gardens was partially underwater as late as last week, days after the hurricane hit. Some people whose loved ones are buried there are asking for the county to improve the cemetery's drainage system. In response to questions by the Daily News, city officials said an independent consultant will evaluate the situation and provide potential solutions. One woman who lives in Georgia was alarmed when she found out her mother's casket was partially unearthed due to flooding.___Information from: Naples (Fla.) Tremor shakes Mexico as hope dims of finding quake survivors-[Reuters]-By Noe Torres and Alexandra Alper-YAHOONEWS-September 24, 2017

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A fresh aftershock rattled southwestern Mexico on Sunday as thousands of rescuers toiled for the sixth straight day despite fading hopes of pulling survivors from the ruins of the country's deadliest earthquake in 32 years. With prospects dimming of finding more people alive in the wreckage of Tuesday's 7.1 magnitude quake, which killed at least 318 people in the Mexico City capital and nearby states, President Enrique Pena Nieto urged Mexicans to turn their attention to rebuilding. In the sprawling capital of 20 million people, survivors slept in makeshift shelters or on the street outside their damaged homes. Rescuers using advanced audio equipment to detect signs of life beneath tonnes of rubble narrowed their search to a handful of buildings. With Mexico facing a presidential election next year, the government's response to the disaster is under close scrutiny.Frustration has grown among the thousands left homeless by Tuesday's quake, with critics saying the government's reaction pales in comparison with an outpouring of volunteer support, from rescue work to food donations."We have received no help from authorities," said Antonio Ramirez, who was conducting a survey of damaged homes in the historic Xochimilco district in the south of the capital."The help has come from ordinary people," the 57-year-old retired teacher said. "Soldiers, instead of carrying picks and shovels, brought their guns."Hitting back against criticism of his government, President Pena Nieto has visited the scene of the devastation and promised ongoing support to those affected.Dozens of structures were flattened in Mexico City by Tuesday's quake, the country's most deadly since a 1985 tremor killed thousands. It was the second major earthquake to strike the country of 127 million people this month.A massive 8.1 magnitude quake on Sept. 7 off the southwestern coast of Mexico killed around 100 people, most of them in the nearby states of Oaxaca and Chiapas. A series of aftershocks since then have sown panic. The latest tremor, of 5.9 magnitude, struck on Sunday off the west coast, with its epicenter 99 km (62 miles) south-southwest of Tonala, in Chiapas, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. There were no immediate reports of significant damage.Aftershocks on Saturday spread fear among Mexico's traumatized population, and a plume of ash spewed from the Popocatepetl volcano in another reminder of the country's volatile geology. Many more quakes are likely, warned Xyoli Perez Campos, director of Mexico's National Seismological Service."We have already recorded more than 4,300 aftershocks," Campos said. "So more aftershocks are to come. What we don't know is if they are going to be of significant magnitude."-'LIFE MUST GO ON'-In Mexico City, the search for survivors from Tuesday's quake continued in a ruined office building in the hip Roma neighborhood and in a five-story apartment building in historic Tlalpan.Authorities called off efforts in the upper-middle class Linda Vista zone after pulling 10 bodies from the rubble, while work at the Tlalpan building was briefly halted on Saturday by a magnitude 6.2 aftershock."In Tlalpan, there is still a possibility of finding people alive. It's URGENT," read a meme passed around Saturday on social networks. In tents set up in different parts of the city, psychologists offered mental health support to traumatized survivors and rescuers. Acts of solidarity came from all corners of Mexican society. With an estimated 30 million people living in the area affected by Tuesday's quake, the temblor may have left economic losses of $4 billion to $8 billion. Some 30,000 homes were badly damaged in the adjacent states of Morelos and Puebla. At least 7,000 schools across the country have been damaged. The Mexican government says at least 350 of them need to be completely rebuilt. In the hard-hit Roma district of Mexico City, 36-year-old Claudia Avila was, like many people, determined to return to some semblance of normality."We are afraid, but life must go on," said Avila, whose sons are 9 and 16. "Tomorrow I will take my children back to school. They know that if something happens, they must protect themselves. It has been a rude awakening."President Pena Nieto was highlighting his government's aid for survivors on a Saturday tour of Jiquipilas in Chiapas, which was badly hit by the Sept. 7 quake."Be assured that the federal government is here, the state and local governments, supporting you, hand in hand, to rebuild," he said. But many Mexicans are wary of politicians' using the quake to score political points ahead of 2018 elections that are seen as a referendum on the patchy record of the Institutional Revolutionary Party since its return to power in 2012.Francisco Honoraro, a 46-year-old farmer in Xochimilco, is living on the streets while he waits for authorities to assess damage to his home."This is going to become political, a campaign issue and a source of profit," he said. "'If you support me and you vote for me, we will help you.'"(Additional Reporting by Michael O'Boyle, Sharay Angulo and Anthony Esposito, Writing by Alexandra Alper and Daniel Flynn; Editing by Sam Holmes and Lisa Von Ahn)

Bali volcano eruption fears spark exodus of more than 35,000-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-September 24, 2017

BALI, Indonesia — More than 35,000 people have fled a menacing volcano on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali, fearing it will erupt for the first time in more than half a century as increasing tremors rattle the region. The numbers Sunday from disaster officials are more than double previous estimates and are continuing to rise, they say. It includes people who left voluntarily as well as those told to evacuate from a 9-12 kilometre (6-8 mile) zone around Mount Agung.Authorities raised the volcano's alert status to the highest level Friday following a "tremendous increase" in seismic activity. Its last eruption in 1963 killed 1,100 people.Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, a senior Cabinet minister, said Sunday that the districts surrounding the volcano "must be prepared for the worst."The National Disaster Mitigation Agency has praised the welcoming response of local communities on Bali to the flood of evacuees.Thousands are living in temporary shelters, sport centres , village halls and with relatives or friends. Some return to the danger zone during the day to tend to livestock.National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said 14 tons of aid has been sent, including tents, blankets, mattresses and portable communications equipment.Truck driver Wayan Suparta said he and his family left their village 5 kilometres (3 miles) from the mountain several days ago, bringing just clothes and blankets to a temporary camp in Rendang. The 35-year-old said he sold the family's cow because they don't know when they'll be able to return.Officials have said there is no current danger to people in other parts of Bali, a popular tourist island famous for its surfing, beaches and elegant Hindu culture.Hoaxes have proliferated online, with videos of previous eruptions in Indonesia circulated as current events at Mount Agung. In 1963, the 3,031-meter (9,944-foot) Agung hurled ash as high as 20 kilometres (12 miles), according to volcanologists, and remained active for about a year. Lava travelled 7.5 kilometres (4.7 miles) and ash reached Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, about 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) away. The mountain, 72 kilometres (45 miles) to the northeast of the tourist hotspot of Kuta, is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia. The country of thousands of islands is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.Firdia Lisnawati, The Associated Press.

Quiet showdown in Barcelona By Helena Spongenberg-EUOBSERVER

Barcelona, 22. Sep, 17:58-Many students across Catalonia answered the call of a students union and suspended classes on Friday morning (22 September).Under the motto: "We empty the classrooms for democracy," they filled up squares and streets, in favour of the independence referendum, which the Catalan government wants to organise on 1 October, and to protest against this week's police action to prevent it."People are fed up and very active, so there is a clear push for mobilisation," Oriol Bartomeus, a professor of political science told EUobserver. The students' protest was part of a wider movement that started on Wednesday morning when 14 people - many of them government officials - were detained while Spanish police carried out raids in government offices. The last six detainees were released, with charges, early on Friday afternoon."They have detained government officials for having promoted the referendum. We are here to defend the people who represent us," Arnau Capo, a 19-year-old student, told EUobserver on Wednesday, while demonstrating in front of the Catalan economy department.Inside the building, the police were searching for evidence of public money being spent to fund the referendum."We found out through the social media where there were communications calling on people to go and give support to the people detained," said his friend Ignasi Espinosa, a 20-year-old student."The idea is that it all has to be pacific and democratic - zero violence," he added. On Thursday, the protests continued on two other locations across Barcelona – one by the Arc de Triomf and by the Catalan Constitutional Court. Across Catalonia other activist took to the streets in smaller groups."My son asked me on my way out: 'Dad, where are you going with the big ladder', and I answered 'I'm just popping out to fix something big'," a man in his forties explained to a group of acquaintances by the market.Almost a hundred people had gathered in the dark. One carried a bucket and a brush, others had brought glue, while most carried big rolls of transparent tape.Black and white A4 posters were handed out to the people present, and some had brought their own. Soon the people started to form into smaller groups, going down the streets in different directions.Their mission: to put up campaign posters to stand in for the millions of posters confiscated by the Spanish gendarmes in the last few weeks. The poster movement has gathered momentum in the last few days, with a website coordinating meet-ups across Catalonia."We were at home listening to the radio and we just decided to come here and join the protest," said 69-year-old Joan Ivern."We are here to defend our rights, the ones of the Catalans - and because the Spanish government doesn't allow us to exercise our rights here in Catalonia, all we want is a referendum - whether it is for a yes or for a no," he said."There is a call to demonstrate and to concentrate in certain areas," said Bartomeus, the academic. "I don't think you can call it a movement guided from above, but it's not a sudden impulsive action either."He said it was due to a combination of factors, including the organisation of civil society groups Omnium Cultural and Audiencia Nacional de Catalunya (ANC), which have been the organisers of the massive annual 11 September demonstrations for the past five years. On Friday, the Spanish public prosecutor accused the leaders of ANC and Omnium for treason, for having organised the demonstrations on Wednesday and Thursday.-'If they use violence, they will lose support'-ANC leader Jordi Sanchez sent out an emailed message on Wednesday to supporters in Barcelona: "The concentration by Gran Via at Rambla de Catalunya continues to grow. It will take many hours. It will be peaceful. We are well organised. Today we will win.""They know that if they use violence, they will lose support," Bartomeus noted."A violent action by the authorities would mean more support for the independence movement, while the same would be true the other way around."He said the separatist movement is already receiving some support from political parties and individuals because the arrests on Wednesday were a step too far for some."There is now support from non-separatists, who are against the Popular Party (PP) and their methods, and many of them see an agreed referendum as a solution to the crisis in Catalonia," Bartomeus said, referring to the party of Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy.Around 75 percent of citizens in Catalonia are in favour of a referendum on independence. The Spanish interior ministry informed the Catalan regional government on Friday that it would send more security forces to the region to support the local police."The functions will be to supervise public space and maintain order and they will act if the illegal referendum is held," the ministry said.-In the name of democracy-Both in Madrid and in Barcelona, the governments are defending their actions in the name of democracy."The two sides mask their final objective with beautiful words," political scientist Bartomeus said."But the reality is that, on one side, there is a separatist bloc that wants independence and needs to accumulate strength because it cannot achieve it on its own. And, on the other side, the Spanish government and the PP are in a situation of extraordinary weakness."He said that the PP is facing an investigation over corruption cases "so big that in any other country in Europe, it would have made the president resign and would probably have destroyed the party."As a consequence, he argued, the PP is using the conflict with Catalonia to stay in power.Back on the streets, where independence activists are hanging up posters, the sound of tape being unrolled is heard in all directions.A 50-year-old singer, Jordi Vallespir, is hanging up posters in different languages with the message "we vote to be free." He has a feeling that this time it will happen."We would love for Europe to help us, but we are very sceptical about whether Europe will come to our help. The past has shown too many times that they turn their face," he said, while referring to the Balkan war in the nineties and the current refugee crisis."But it's okay - we can do this," he adds."There is this romantic idea that Europe will help us - but no. Europe will do what is economically in their interest," said a fellow activist across the road, 50-year-old Marta Serra."We'll probably end up here on our own, but we're used to that anyway."

Russia, Syria intensify bombing of rebel-held Idlib, witnesses say-[Reuters]-By Suleiman Al-Khalidi-YAHOONEWS-September 24, 2017

AMMAN (Reuters) - Russian and Syrian jets escalated strikes on rebel-held Idlib and Hama provinces, several days after jihadist rebels opened an offensive against government-held parts of northwestern Syria, rebels and witnesses said on Sunday. The bombing campaign in heavily populated civilian areas shattered six months of relative calm. Russian-inspired ceasefires had given a temporary reprieve to tens of thousands of people living in rebel-held northwestern Syria. But now thousands of civilians who had been returning to their homes have headed back to the relative safety of refugee camps along the Turkish border, which are protected under Russian-Turkish understandings, residents said."People are very afraid things have gone back to what they were and returned back to camps - there is no longer any hope," Ahmad Thaib, a resident of Jabal al Zawya. The strikes were retaliation for last Tuesday's assault against Hama province, which were spearheaded by Tahrir al-Sham, the jihadist Turkistan Islamic Party and rebels fighting under the banner of the Free Syrian Army (FSA).The bombing campaign also comes shortly after a tripartite deal struck by Moscow, Ankara and Tehran to deploy an observer force in Idlib, a province where the former al Qaeda's Syrian offshoot has cemented its control after it crushed opponents.Western-vetted rebels said the Russian strikes targeted FSA groups who had signed the ceasefire agreements Russia had promoted, casting doubt on whether Moscow had any intention of shoring up the ceasefire.Civil defense workers and residents said dozens of strikes struck the major towns of Khan Sheikhoun, Jisr al-Shaqour, Saraqeb and scores of villages. At least five hospitals and several civil defense centers have been knocked out of action since the start of the counter offensive.Rebel sources said over fifty fighters were killed on Saturday after jets believed to be Russian targeted a training camp run by Failaq al Sham, an FSA rebel group, which is at odds with jihadist groups.Russia's defense ministry says it is attacking hard-line Islamist militants. It denies accusations it has targeted infrastructure and medical centers to force rebels into local truces that effectively restore President Bashar al Assad's grip on the country. On Friday, Russia's defense ministry said a submarine fired Kalibr cruise missiles at Islamist militants, who it said had tried to trap a group of Russian military policemen. In the city of Khan Sheikhoun in southern Idlib, jets believed to be Russian destroyed the town's major power plant on Friday, one witness said. The plant feeds northern Hama and southern Idlib. On the outskirts of Jarjanaz, a strike barely missed a camp where hundreds of displaced people were sheltering, a resident said.At least several people were killed near the town of Kafr Sajna, one of the sites where the Russian missiles landed, witnesses said. A video downloaded by activists showed a rescue worker trying to extinguish the flames on a young body charred by an incendiary bomb.(Reporting by Suleiman Al-Khalidi, editing by Larry King)

Palestinian leader tries to put Trump on notice with warning-[Associated Press]-JOSEF FEDERMAN-yahoonews-September 24, 2017

JERUSALEM (AP) — Overshadowed by last week's showdown between the U.S. and North Korea, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued an ominous warning in his address to the United Nations: With hopes running out for an independent Palestinian state, the Palestinian leader said he may have no choice but to seek a single, binational state with Israel. While Abbas appears to be in no hurry to disband his self-rule government, his threat raises an awkward scenario for Israel and the Trump administration that could potentially spell doom for the century-old Zionist enterprise.Abbas was a mastermind and negotiator of the historic Oslo peace accords of the 1990s — interim deals that set a five-year goal for reaching a final agreement. Since then, he has remained a vocal supporter of pursuing a negotiated peace agreement that would establish an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. But after nearly a quarter century of failed U.S.-led peace efforts, the 82-year-old Abbas told the world body last Wednesday that time is running out as Israel expands its settlements on occupied lands."The two-state solution is today in jeopardy," he said, saying that the Palestinians will have to "look for alternatives" if the door is closed to independence."If the two-state solution were to be destroyed due to the creation of a one-state reality with two systems — apartheid," he said, "this would be a failure, and neither you, nor we, will have any other choice but to continue the struggle and demand full, equal rights for all inhabitants of historic Palestine."Abbas has issued similar threats before. But the timing and high-profile venue of his speech gave his comments some added urgency. The Palestinians are eagerly waiting for President Donald Trump to present his vision for peace, and are desperately seeking his endorsement of a two-state solution."President Abbas sent a direct message to the U.S. administration, saying: Either you save the two-state solution or we are going to end up in one state where our people are going to ask for full rights," said Mohammed Ishtayeh, a top adviser to Abbas.A White House official said the administration understands the difficulties involved, but remains optimistic and is having "productive conversations with both sides." The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was discussing behind-the-scenes diplomacy. The Palestinians seek the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip — territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war — for their future state. The international community, including Trump's predecessors, has long supported the two-state solution, believing that partitioning the land into Israeli and Palestinian states is the best way to ensure peace. The reasoning is rooted in demographics. Most demographers believe the number of Jews and Arabs in these areas is close to equal. Relinquishing control of territories with several million Palestinians would ensure Israel's future as a democracy with a solid Jewish majority. Continued control over the Palestinians, on the other hand, could force Israel to choose between its Jewish character and remaining a democracy. With this in mind, Israel withdrew from Gaza, now home to 2 million Palestinians, in 2005. Yet it also has strengthened its grip on the West Bank and east Jerusalem, together home to over 600,000 Israelis and an estimated 2.7 million Palestinians, making any future separation increasingly difficult. Israel has some 1.8 million Arab citizens and 6.5 million Jews, according to its Central Bureau of Statistics.Israel has annexed east Jerusalem and considers the area, home to sensitive religious sites, an inseparable part of its capital. Although the annexation is not internationally recognized, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed never to divide the city. The fate of the West Bank is even more complicated. Israel has established scores of settlements without declaring it to be part of Israel. The result is a complicated reality where Israeli settlers enjoy the protection of the Israeli military and the rights of Israeli citizenship, while Palestinians are subject to a combination of autonomy under Abbas' Palestinian Authority and Israeli military law. Critics, including Abbas, frequently compare this two-tiered system to South African apartheid.Israeli hard-liners have offered a host of reasons to oppose Palestinian independence. They claim Israel's pre-1967 boundaries would be indefensible, point to past peace proposals rejected by the Palestinians and note the bloody second Palestinian uprising of the early 2000s and Hamas takeover of Gaza in 2007. They cite the Jewish biblical connection to the West Bank, say that expanded Palestinian autonomy should be sufficient or claim that Abbas is weak or cannot be trusted. But they have struggled to provide an answer if the Palestinians give up their aspirations for independence and instead seek equality and Israeli voting rights. Coping with this dilemma, Netanyahu offered conditional support for Palestinian independence upon taking office in 2009. But since Trump's election, Netanyahu has stopped talking about a two-state solution.Netanyahu's office did not respond to requests for comment on Abbas' speech. His U.N. Ambassador, Danny Danon, last week said Abbas had "spread falsehoods.""Today's lies and excuses have proven once again that the Palestinian leadership is a serial evader of peace," he said.It seems unlikely that Abbas will follow through on his warning. The Palestinian president controls a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars, tens of thousands of jobs and travels the world with VIP status. His aides admit there are no immediate plans to disband the internationally backed Palestinian Authority.Palestinian officials say his speech was meant to rouse an international community that has stopped paying attention to them and to remind the world that the alternatives to inaction are worse."We told the Americans it's the last chance for the two-state solution," Ishtayeh said.

HANNAH A WOMAN OF PRAYER
http://israndjer.blogspot.ca/2009/08/hannah-woman-of-prayer.html

EXODUS 32:11-34:10
11  And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?
12  Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.
13  Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.
14  And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.
15  And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.
16  And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.
17  And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.
18  And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.
19  And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.
20  And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.
21  And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?
22  And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.
23  For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
24  And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.
25  And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)
26  Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD'S side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.
27  And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.
28  And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
29  For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves to day to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.
30  And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.
31  And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.
32  Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin––; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.
33  And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
34  Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.
35  And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

EXODUS 33:1-23
1  And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:
2  And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:
3  Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.
4  And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.
5  For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.
6  And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.
7  And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
8  And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.
9  And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the LORD talked with Moses.
10  And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.
11  And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.
12  And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.
13  Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
14  And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
15  And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.
16  For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
17  And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
18  And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
19  And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
20  And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
21  And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
22  And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
23  And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

EXODUS 34:1-10
1  And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.
2  And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount.
3  And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.
4  And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.
5  And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD.
6  And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
7  Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
8  And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.
9  And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.
10  And he said, Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the LORD: for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee.
