In interviews with thousands of British Jews, almost a third of them said they have considered leaving the United Kingdom over the past two years due to anti-Semitism.The findings are part of a report published Sunday by the Campaign Against Antisemitism watchdog group, which conducted since 2015 interviews with more than 10,000 British Jews together with the YouGov market research company.In interviews conducted in 2016 and 2017 with a combined sample population of 7,156 respondents, 37 percent of them said they have been concealing in public signs that would indicate that they are Jewish.Only 59% of the respondents since 2015 said they feel welcome in the United Kingdom and 17% said they feel unwelcome.Only 39% of respondents from 2015 onward said they trust justice authorities to prosecute perpetrators of anti-Semitic hate crimes.Three-quarters of the people interviewed said they feel that recent political events have resulted in increased hostility towards Jews. Since 2015, 80% of respondents said they believe that the Labour Party is harboring anti-Semites in its ranks.In 2015, Jeremy Corbyn, a far-left politician who in 2009 called Hezbollah and Hamas his “friends,” was elected to lead Labour. Corbyn said last year that he regrets calling the terrorists his friends but Jewish groups in the United Kingdom and beyond have accused him of whitewashing anti-Semitism and allowing it to grow among the many thousands of supporters who joined Labour in support of his policies.Corbyn has denied this claim, vowing to punish anyone who is found initiating or participating in hate speech. Dozens of members were expelled from Labour under Corbyn as part of this policy. However, several Labour members who were accused of anti-Semitic hate speech were readmitted or let off with suspensions or reprimands, including former London mayor Ken Livingstone who repeatedly said last year that Adolf Hitler was a Zionist.On August 15, Campaign Against Antisemitism protested the selection as a Labour candidate of Luke Cresswell, a local politician who wrote online that “Moses must be proud” of supposed “genocide” by Israel.The survey’s respondents said they considered Islamist anti-Semitism “to be the threat that concerned them the most, and that rapidly rising hate crime targeting Jews was not being tackled by the authorities,” Campaign Against Antisemitism wrote.The Jewish community of the United Kingdom recorded 767 anti-Semitic attacks in the first half of 2017 — the highest figure recorded within six months since monitoring began in 1984. In February, the Community Security Trust watchdog reported a record 1,309 incidents in 2016, constituting a 36% increase over the 2015 tally.Among the people who told Campaign Against Antisemitism that they were considering leaving Britain was a daughter of the late mayor of Birmingham, Harold Blumenthal. The daughter, Mandy, “is now making preparations to leave Britain due to mounting antisemitism in politics and antisemitic crime, and the failure to tackle it,” the Campaign Against Antisemitism report said in a statement about their report.Campaign Against Antisemitism called on the government to urgently implement the group’s own past recommendations, including specific training and guidance on anti-Semitic hate crime for officers and prosecutors.The 2016 National Antisemitic Crime Audit registered a total of 1,078 anti-Semitic crimes, including 105 that were violent. Only one of the violent crimes was prosecuted, according to the audit. MADRID, Spain (AFP) — Traces of the easy-to-make-but-deadly explosive TATP, known as the “mother of Satan,” have been found in a house where the alleged attackers in the twin assaults in Spain were believed to be building bombs, police said Sunday.Used by jihadists everywhere from Paris and Brussels to the battlefields of Syria and Iraq, the dangerously unstable TATP has become the explosive of choice for the Islamic State group, which claimed the attacks in Barcelona and the seaside resort of Cambrils.Investigators uncovered ingredients of the explosive at a house in the town of Alcanar, around 200 kilometers (120 miles) south of Barcelona, believed to be the terror cell’s bomb-making factory.Discovered at the end of the 19th century by a German chemist, TATP is a homemade explosive, created by mixing precise quantities of acetone, oxygenated water and sulphuric, hydrochloric or nitric acid — all of which are easily available in stores.The mixture creates a coarse powder of white crystals that requires only a basic detonator to explode, triggering a huge blast of burning gas.Jihadists have set up entire labs — at first backroom affairs, but increasingly reaching industrial levels — to produce TATP and other explosive materials in Syria and Iraq.The UK-based Conflict Armament Research monitor said in a report last year that 51 companies had supplied the components needed to make homemade explosives at semi-industrial levels to IS.The companies were spread across 20 countries, including Turkey and Russia, but also Belgium and the United States.Detonators can be made with common household goods, but they can also just as easily be bought ready-made.One of the attackers in the November 2015 bloodbath in Paris had bought a dozen pyrotechnic detonators at a fireworks store in the Paris region without raising the slightest suspicion.Yet contrary to urban myth, more than a tutorial online is needed to learn how to put the ingredients together.The volatility of the operation is perhaps illustrated by the fate of the suspects preparing the bombs in Alcanar, where they are believed to have accidentally sparked a detonation that killed at least two of them on the eve of the Barcelona van rampage.

A spokesman for the Barcelona Jewish Community on Friday rejected predictions of doom from the local chief rabbi, vowing that the city’s Jews would not abandon the city in the wake of the deadly attack by Islamic terrorists.“Barcelona is a city where Jews have been living for one hundred years and of which they are proud. We Jews will not leave our city,” spokesman Victor Sorenssen said in an email to the Times of Israel.His comments came after the Barcelona Chief Rabbi Meir Bar-Hen said he believes the Jewish community in Barcelona is “doomed,” because authorities in Spain do not want to confront radical Islam.Without mentioning Bar-Hen by name, Sorenssen said that the Jews of Barcelona had a vibrant past and a positive future and are an integral part of multi-cultural Barcelona.“Since 1977, with the arrival of democracy, the Jewish community has played an active role in the social fabric of Barcelona. The Jewish community participates actively in social, cultural and religious life of the society and has relation with the institutions of the city, of Catalonia and Spain,” he said, noting that next year the community will celebrate it’s centenary after being reformed following the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492.“In these hundred years, Jews from all over the world have been an active part of this reconstruction,” said Sorenssen, who wrote that he had been asked to speak out on behalf of the “crisis committee of the Jewish community” in response to the terror attack. “We are living a revival of Jewish culture.”Sorenssen said the terror attack would not change the Jewish community’s commitment to the city.“The scourge of terrorism has shaken our city with force, as it has done in other European cities. An Israeli woman who was lightly wounded during the Barcelona terror attack on Thursday recounted the moments when the truck driven by an Islamic State terrorist ploughed into the crowd.Edna Hajaj, resident of the southern city of Beersheba in her 50s, was flown to Israel and treated at the Soroka Hospital in her home town. She was released from hospital on Friday afternoon.“We were on vacation, me and my husband in Barcelona. We got there on Sunday and yesterday was supposed to be our last day there,” Hajaj told the 360 news website. “We decided to go to a restaurant before we went back to Israel and before going in decided to go into the market that is adjacent to the kosher restaurant. Just as we entered, only a minute or two, we heard tires screeching and objects being dragged on the ground.”“We understood within seconds that it was a terror attack and we started running. She and her husband landed in Israel on Friday at 6 a.m.“The hotel where we stayed was right by where the attack took place and we weren’t let into the hotel because they blocked the entire road. So we just went on the plane and left all our things at the hotel. We only took off at 1 in the morning because they waited for many more Israelis, some of which never came,” said Hajaj.Hajaj sustained multiple bruises but no cuts. “I have many dry wounds, I am supposed to have a plaster cast done and I hope it’ll be OK. It hurts all over. We were on holiday and these were our last two hours there. We are happy it ended like this and not worse – if my husband wasn’t there I’d be completely run over. So many people fell on top of me I couldn’t even get up.”Also Friday the Foreign Ministry said there was now only one Israeli citizen listed as unaccounted for, however, they said the chances he was one of the victims of the attack was increasingly slim.Immediately after the attack the ministry had a list of 28 Israelis feared missing, but they had managed to make contact with all but one.Israel’s envoy in Spain, Daniel Kutner, told Israel Radio that diplomats had been dispatched to hospitals to ensure no Israelis were among those hurt or killed.At least 14 people were killed in the terror attack and dozens more were wounded. Spanish police are still looking for the man who was driving the truck.

In interviews with thousands of British Jews, almost a third of them said they have considered leaving the United Kingdom over the past two years due to anti-Semitism.The findings are part of a report published Sunday by the Campaign Against Antisemitism watchdog group, which conducted since 2015 interviews with more than 10,000 British Jews together with the YouGov market research company.In interviews conducted in 2016 and 2017 with a combined sample population of 7,156 respondents, 37 percent of them said they have been concealing in public signs that would indicate that they are Jewish.Only 59% of the respondents since 2015 said they feel welcome in the United Kingdom and 17% said they feel unwelcome.Only 39% of respondents from 2015 onward said they trust justice authorities to prosecute perpetrators of anti-Semitic hate crimes.Three-quarters of the people interviewed said they feel that recent political events have resulted in increased hostility towards Jews. Since 2015, 80% of respondents said they believe that the Labour Party is harboring anti-Semites in its ranks.In 2015, Jeremy Corbyn, a far-left politician who in 2009 called Hezbollah and Hamas his “friends,” was elected to lead Labour. Corbyn said last year that he regrets calling the terrorists his friends but Jewish groups in the United Kingdom and beyond have accused him of whitewashing anti-Semitism and allowing it to grow among the many thousands of supporters who joined Labour in support of his policies.Corbyn has denied this claim, vowing to punish anyone who is found initiating or participating in hate speech. Dozens of members were expelled from Labour under Corbyn as part of this policy. However, several Labour members who were accused of anti-Semitic hate speech were readmitted or let off with suspensions or reprimands, including former London mayor Ken Livingstone who repeatedly said last year that Adolf Hitler was a Zionist.On August 15, Campaign Against Antisemitism protested the selection as a Labour candidate of Luke Cresswell, a local politician who wrote online that “Moses must be proud” of supposed “genocide” by Israel.The survey’s respondents said they considered Islamist anti-Semitism “to be the threat that concerned them the most, and that rapidly rising hate crime targeting Jews was not being tackled by the authorities,” Campaign Against Antisemitism wrote.The Jewish community of the United Kingdom recorded 767 anti-Semitic attacks in the first half of 2017 — the highest figure recorded within six months since monitoring began in 1984. In February, the Community Security Trust watchdog reported a record 1,309 incidents in 2016, constituting a 36% increase over the 2015 tally.Among the people who told Campaign Against Antisemitism that they were considering leaving Britain was a daughter of the late mayor of Birmingham, Harold Blumenthal. The daughter, Mandy, “is now making preparations to leave Britain due to mounting antisemitism in politics and antisemitic crime, and the failure to tackle it,” the Campaign Against Antisemitism report said in a statement about their report.Campaign Against Antisemitism called on the government to urgently implement the group’s own past recommendations, including specific training and guidance on anti-Semitic hate crime for officers and prosecutors.The 2016 National Antisemitic Crime Audit registered a total of 1,078 anti-Semitic crimes, including 105 that were violent. Only one of the violent crimes was prosecuted, according to the audit. In total, only 15 cases were prosecuted, leading to the conviction of 17 suspects.Political parties were encouraged by Campaign Against Antisemitism in its report to adopt the government’s definition of anti-Semitism, which cites vitriolic hate speech against Israel as an expression of anti-Semitism.

MADRID, Spain (AFP) — Traces of the easy-to-make-but-deadly explosive TATP, known as the “mother of Satan,” have been found in a house where the alleged attackers in the twin assaults in Spain were believed to be building bombs, police said Sunday.Used by jihadists everywhere from Paris and Brussels to the battlefields of Syria and Iraq, the dangerously unstable TATP has become the explosive of choice for the Islamic State group, which claimed the attacks in Barcelona and the seaside resort of Cambrils.Investigators uncovered ingredients of the explosive at a house in the town of Alcanar, around 200 kilometers (120 miles) south of Barcelona, believed to be the terror cell’s bomb-making factory.Discovered at the end of the 19th century by a German chemist, TATP is a homemade explosive, created by mixing precise quantities of acetone, oxygenated water and sulphuric, hydrochloric or nitric acid — all of which are easily available in stores.The mixture creates a coarse powder of white crystals that requires only a basic detonator to explode, triggering a huge blast of burning gas.Jihadists have set up entire labs — at first backroom affairs, but increasingly reaching industrial levels — to produce TATP and other explosive materials in Syria and Iraq.The UK-based Conflict Armament Research monitor said in a report last year that 51 companies had supplied the components needed to make homemade explosives at semi-industrial levels to IS.The companies were spread across 20 countries, including Turkey and Russia, but also Belgium and the United States.Detonators can be made with common household goods, but they can also just as easily be bought ready-made.One of the attackers in the November 2015 bloodbath in Paris had bought a dozen pyrotechnic detonators at a fireworks store in the Paris region without raising the slightest suspicion.Yet contrary to urban myth, more than a tutorial online is needed to learn how to put the ingredients together.The volatility of the operation is perhaps illustrated by the fate of the suspects preparing the bombs in Alcanar, where they are believed to have accidentally sparked a detonation that killed at least two of them on the eve of the Barcelona van rampage.

BARCELONA, Spain (AFP) — Spanish police said Sunday that the Moroccan man suspected of driving the van used in one of the devastating twin attacks that claimed 14 lives could be at large outside Spain, as official revealed the extent of an apparently aborted plot involving dozens of gas bombs.“We don’t know where he is,” said regional police chief Josep Lluis Trapero, referring to 22-year-old suspect Younes Abouyaaqoub, as officials confirmed that the cell behind the carnage had been preparing “one or more” assaults in Barcelona.More than 120 gas canisters have been uncovered in a house where the suspects were believed to have been building bombs, Trapero said.But the jihadists had accidentally detonated an explosive at the house on the eve of Thursday’s attack in Barcelona, an error that likely forced them to modify their plans.He said authorities haven’t been able to positively identify the human remains at the house in Alcanar, complicating the manhunt.Trapero told reporters that the radical cell of 12 people had rented three vans and also used a car and motorcycle in plotting their attack.He said ingredients of the explosive TATP, which has been used by Islamic State extremists in other attacks, were found at the home in Alcanar that was destroyed Wednesday, along with more than 100 butane gas tanks.“That makes us think this is the place where they were preparing the explosives,” Trapero said.Instead, a vehicle was used to smash into crowds on Barcelona’s Las Ramblas boulevard as it was thronged with tourists, killing 13 people and injuring about 100.Several hours later, there was another attack in the seaside town of Cambrils in which one woman was killed.Police shot and killed the five attackers in Cambrils, some of whom were wearing fake explosive belts and carrying knives.-Snipers on rooftops-In Barcelona, locals and tourists turned out in force on Sunday to mourn victims at the Sagrada Familia church designed by Gaudi, as snipers were posted on surrounding rooftops of the landmark building.King Felipe, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and Catalonia’s president Carles Puigdemont led the 90-minute ceremony, while heavily armed police stood guard outside.Catalonia resident Teresa Rodriguez said she came to pray for the dead and the wounded who came from three dozen countries, some as far afield as Australia, China and Peru.“What happened in Las Ramblas is really hard for us, we go for walks there often, it could have happened to me, my children or anyone. A spokesman for the Barcelona Jewish Community on Friday rejected predictions of doom from the local chief rabbi, vowing that the city’s Jews would not abandon the city in the wake of the deadly attack by Islamic terrorists.“Barcelona is a city where Jews have been living for one hundred years and of which they are proud. We Jews will not leave our city,” spokesman Victor Sorenssen said in an email to the Times of Israel.His comments came after the Barcelona Chief Rabbi Meir Bar-Hen said he believes the Jewish community in Barcelona is “doomed,” because authorities in Spain do not want to confront radical Islam.Without mentioning Bar-Hen by name, Sorenssen said that the Jews of Barcelona had a vibrant past and a positive future and are an integral part of multi-cultural Barcelona.“Since 1977, with the arrival of democracy, the Jewish community has played an active role in the social fabric of Barcelona. The Jewish community participates actively in social, cultural and religious life of the society and has relation with the institutions of the city, of Catalonia and Spain,” he said, noting that next year the community will celebrate it’s centenary after being reformed following the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492.“In these hundred years, Jews from all over the world have been an active part of this reconstruction,” said Sorenssen, who wrote that he had been asked to speak out on behalf of the “crisis committee of the Jewish community” in response to the terror attack. “We are living a revival of Jewish culture.”Sorenssen said the terror attack would not change the Jewish community’s commitment to the city.“The scourge of terrorism has shaken our city with force, as it has done in other European cities. An Israeli woman who was lightly wounded during the Barcelona terror attack on Thursday recounted the moments when the truck driven by an Islamic State terrorist ploughed into the crowd.Edna Hajaj, resident of the southern city of Beersheba in her 50s, was flown to Israel and treated at the Soroka Hospital in her home town. She was released from hospital on Friday afternoon.“We were on vacation, me and my husband in Barcelona. We got there on Sunday and yesterday was supposed to be our last day there,” Hajaj told the 360 news website. “We decided to go to a restaurant before we went back to Israel and before going in decided to go into the market that is adjacent to the kosher restaurant. Just as we entered, only a minute or two, we heard tires screeching and objects being dragged on the ground.”“We understood within seconds that it was a terror attack and we started running. We didn’t know where it came from, we didn’t know where to run or what to do. We started running and everyone ran with us. I fell, and many people fell over me and just ran me over. Until my husband managed to drag me out I was hit in my ribs and had some toes broken. It was terrible,” said Hajaj.Hajaj and her husband did not have time to take their suitcases from their hotel, since the road leading there was blocked. She and her husband landed in Israel on Friday at 6 a.m.“The hotel where we stayed was right by where the attack took place and we weren’t let into the hotel because they blocked the entire road. So we just went on the plane and left all our things at the hotel. We only took off at 1 in the morning because they waited for many more Israelis, some of which never came,” said Hajaj.Hajaj sustained multiple bruises but no cuts. “I have many dry wounds, I am supposed to have a plaster cast done and I hope it’ll be OK. It hurts all over. We were on holiday and these were our last two hours there. We are happy it ended like this and not worse – if my husband wasn’t there I’d be completely run over. So many people fell on top of me I couldn’t even get up.”Also Friday the Foreign Ministry said there was now only one Israeli citizen listed as unaccounted for, however, they said the chances he was one of the victims of the attack was increasingly slim.Immediately after the attack the ministry had a list of 28 Israelis feared missing, but they had managed to make contact with all but one.Israel’s envoy in Spain, Daniel Kutner, told Israel Radio that diplomats had been dispatched to hospitals to ensure no Israelis were among those hurt or killed.At least 14 people were killed in the terror attack and dozens more were wounded. Spanish police are still looking for the man who was driving the truck.
