Christians mark Easter at Jerusalem site of Jesus’s resurrection-Large crowds flock to Church of the Holy Sepulchre for holiday, which was held at site for first time since renovation to Jesus’ tomb-By AFP April 16, 2017, 6:03 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Thousands of Christians marked Jesus’s resurrection on Easter Sunday at the Jerusalem site where they believe the miracle occurred, with some prostrating themselves over his tomb and leaving in tears.Visitors and worshippers filed through the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built on the site where tradition says Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. It was the first Easter since the unveiling in March of renovations to the ornate, 19th-century shrine covering Jesus’s tomb following a $3.7 million project that restored its stones to their original reddish-yellow and reinforced the heavily visited site. This year’s holiday also fell on the same date for both Western and Eastern Christians, an irregular occurrence since they follow different calendars.Masses were staggered throughout the day for the various denominations that co-exist, often uneasily, in the church in Jerusalem’s Old City.As mass was underway, visits continued, with pilgrims rubbing clothing, veils and even pictures on mobile phones against the shrine over the tomb and the stone where Jesus’s body was anointed after his crucifixion.Visits underground to the tomb itself were however off limits during masses.“It’s beautiful,” Michael Hanna, 64, a Coptic Christian originally from Egypt but who has lived in Australia since 1980, said of his visit.“You can’t imagine the feeling touching the places where Jesus touched. I can’t describe the feeling,” the postal worker said.Hanna also lamented the fate of Coptic Christians in Egypt, where two Islamic State group suicide bombers struck two churches on April 9, killing 45 people in the worst attack on Copts in recent memory.-‘Soulful and peaceful’-Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, apostolic administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, entered through the church’s heavy wooden doors to lead mass, stopping to kneel before the stone where Jesus’s body was anointed, then splashing holy water on the crowds.Tin Nguyen, a 24-year-old from Vietnam working as an intern at an agricultural center in southern Israel, recorded the mass with a mobile phone and a selfie stick for friends back home since they may never have a chance to visit.“The spirit here, and the way people come here and gather together in (Jesus’s) name,” he said. “It’s soulful and peaceful.”Wajeeh Nusseibeh, 67, a member of one of the two Muslim families who traditionally hold the key and guard the church, said this year there seemed to be fewer people visiting than in the past.He blamed tough economic times and conflict, with Middle Eastern Christians under threat in countries such as Iraq and Syria. At the same time, Jerusalem also remains the focal point of the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Holy Sepulchre is located in East Jerusalem, which was obtained by Israel from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day War and later de facto annexed.Nusseibeh, dressed in a dark suit with a red and black tie, however was keeping the faith.“We hope to have peace next year,” he said as he sat before the entrance’s towering wooden doors, keeping an eye on those who entered. “And everyone accepts the other.”

Trump-Abbas White House summit said set for May 3-Fatah official says Palestinian leader will be preceded in Washington by a preparatory PA delegation on April 23-By Times of Israel staff April 16, 2017, 10:04 am

A Palestinian official said Sunday that the much-touted first meeting between Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and US President Donald Trump will take place on May 3 in the White House.Senior Fatah official Azzam al-Ahmad also told the Jordanian newspaper Al Ghad that a Palestinian delegation will head to Washington on April 23 for preliminary meetings with the administration. There was no immediate confirmation of the date from the White House or the Palestinian Authority.“President Abbas will go to discuss the vital political and economic issue, with an emphasis on confirming the two-state solution, completely ending settlement construction and the occupation, and establishing a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with occupied Jerusalem as its capital,” al-Ahmad said.Trump spoke to Abbas for the first time over the phone in March and invited him to the White House.Abbas later told US special peace envoy Jason Greenblatt that he believed a “historic” peace deal with Israel was possible with Trump in office.Greenblatt told Arab foreign ministers in late March that Trump was committed to reaching a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians that would “reverberate” throughout the Middle East and the world. In contrast, Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the PLO Executive Committee, said Saturday that the Israeli right had penetrated the American administration.“We used to say there were settlers in the Israeli coalition born of the far right that detests Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims. But today we say there are settlers inside the White House,” she said, in comments reported by the Ynet news website.“The administration has adopted the extreme Israeli position to the right of [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu that supports the settlements.”Greenblatt has made two trips to the region since Trump assumed the presidency in January in an effort to jumpstart the long-dormant peace negotiations.During those visits, he met with multiple stakeholders in the conflict, including Netanyahu and Abbas. Trump hosted Netanyahu at the White House in February.

Minister warns of summer conflict with Hamas-Yoav Galant, a former IDF general, says Israel’s efforts to neutralize cross-border tunnels could put pressure on Gaza rulers-By Stuart Winer April 16, 2017, 12:19 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Construction Minister Yoav Galant predicted Sunday that Israel was likely to be drawn into another conflict with Hamas over the summer due to its successful efforts to overcome one of the terror group’s assets — the cross-border tunnels from the Gaza Strip.“We need to be ready for a confrontation with Hamas from [the start of] the coming summer,” Galant warned. “It is a sensitive period, and we need to be alert and to take actions to prevent it.”Hamas used tunnels to launch deadly attacks inside Israeli territory during the most recent war in the Strip, in summer 2014.Galant, a former head of the IDF’s Southern Command, which handles Gaza operations, said it was becoming clear that a massive barrier Israel is constructing along its border with Gaza will significantly hamper Hamas efforts to dig into Israel. As a result, the terror group, which seized control of Gaza in 2007, will feel pressured, he assessed. The structure is set to include a wall deep below ground as well as a fence above ground. Some parts of the roughly 60-kilometer (40-mile) border will also be flooded.“When you change something that is seen as being of strategic value to the other side, you need to keep a finger on the trigger and an eye on the binoculars, ready for action,” Galant said, although he would not specify when he thought the next war would break out.“If you want peace then prepare for war,” he added, citing an ancient Roman adage.Galant has been known to forecast wars with Hamas. In April 2016, also in an interview with Army Radio, the minister predicted a war in Gaza that summer as well, but no such conflict occurred.Reports of Hamas tunnels running into Israel have persisted despite ongoing Israeli efforts to eradicate the threats. In March, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman denied a report saying there were 15 such tunnels from the Gaza Strip. At the time, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot told the Knesset’s State Control Committee that while the tunnels were a serious concern, they were not a “strategic or existential threat.”Eisenkot was called in by the panel in order to discuss a scathing report by the State Comptroller’s Office about the 2014 Gaza war that accused the military of being insufficiently prepared to face the Hamas tunnel threat.Eisenkot told the lawmakers that the military has thus far invested over NIS 4 billion ($1.1 billion) in shoring up Israel’s underground defenses. He said that reprisal attacks launched by Israel in response to rocket fire from Gaza were not targeting “sand dunes and empty bunkers” but rather were actively thwarting the tunnels, admitting for the first time that the army has the technology to do so. Details of efforts to thwart the tunnels are still mostly kept secret.Israel has fought three major rounds of conflict with Hamas since the terror group seized control of Gaza from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah in 2007.The most recent such conflict, Operation Protective Edge, saw 50 days of fighting, including a ground offensive.During the operation, the army found and damaged 34 Hamas tunnels, 14 of them crossing into Israel. The rest were inside Gaza, for use as bunkers and means of transportation around the Strip.Hamas has reportedly invested considerable resources rehabilitating its network of attack tunnels over the past few years. The IDF has also sought to improve its ability to counter the threat since the 2014 conflict.Judah Ari Gross and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Hamas leader hints prisoner exchange deal in the works-Khaled Mashaal says group working ‘behind the scenes’ to ensure all Palestinian prisoners are freed from Israeli jails-By Times of Israel staff April 15, 2017, 8:37 pm

Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal indicated Saturday that members of the terror organization imprisoned in Israel will soon be released as a result of behind the scenes efforts by the group to secure their release.“The release of all the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons [will take place] soon,” Hebrew media reports quoted him as saying at a conference on the issue.“Not all of the efforts on the issue of prisoners are public. The efforts that Hamas has invested behind the scenes will be seen in the future,” he said.“We have set for ourselves a goal of cleaning all the Israeli prisons of Palestinians,” he added, according to the Haaretz daily. In February, Hamas confirmed that it was engaged in talks through third-party mediators over a possible prisoner exchange with Israel, but said a deal had been rejected for not meeting their minimum demands.Hamas’s confirmation of the talks followed Israeli media reports that Israel was seeking to reach a deal with the rulers of the Gaza Strip to secure the release of three Israeli men who crossed into the coastal territory of their own accord: Avraham Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, as well as Juma Ibrahim Abu Ghanima, whose presence in Gaza is unconfirmed.Hamas, an Islamist terror group that seeks to destroy Israel, also holds the bodies of IDF soldiers Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin, who the army determined were killed in action in the 2014 Gaza war.A senior Hamas source told The Times of Israel at the time that it wanted Israel to release 60 members of the terror group arrested after being freed in an earlier exchange.Hamas demands that Israel release all prisoners from the 2011 exchange for Gilad Shalit who were rearrested in 2014 when three Israeli teens were abducted in the West Bank (it later emerged that they had been killed almost immediately) before any advancement in negotiations between the parties can take place. In his reported remarks Saturday Mashaal did not say what conditions had changed since February that would allow for a deal to now take place.Mashaal also reiterated on Saturday the terror group’s demand that its members who were rearrested as part of the Shalit deal be released as a condition for negotiations over a prisoner exchange.“If Israel does not fulfill its obligations from the Shalit deal how will it fulfill [them] in (another) deal,” he said, according to Channel 10.“For any information concerning the captured Israelis there will be a price, Israel’s threats don’t scare the Hamas movement.”Despite the reports of a deal for a prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas being negotiated by mediators — Egypt or Qatar, or both — senior Hamas official Mahmoud al-Zahar said last month that the recent assassination of one of the terror group’s military commanders, Mazen Faqha, which it blames on Israel, would impede the negotiations for a prisoner exchange with the Jewish state.Faqha, a former prisoner in Israel who oversaw Hamas’s efforts to instigate terror attacks in the West Bank, was killed in his home in Tel el-Hawa, a neighborhood in southwestern Gaza City, on Friday. Hamas leaders have pointed to the stealthy and professional quality of the killing as evidence that it was carried out by members of an Israeli spy agency. Israel has not commented on Faqha’s death.Faqha hailed from the northern West Bank town of Tubas, where he was arrested in 2002 for terrorism during the Second Intifada. He was serving multiple life terms for orchestrating a 2002 suicide bombing in which nine Israelis were killed. He was released in October 2011 in the prisoner swap for the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, and expelled to Gaza.Avi Issacharoff contributed to this report.

Gaza’s sole power plant runs out of fuel-Crisis a result of ‘dispute’ with West Bank Palestinian authorities; Gaza Health Ministry warns of impending humanitarian crisis-By Times of Israel staff and AFP April 16, 2017, 4:22 pm

The Gaza Strip’s only functioning power plant was not functioning Sunday after running out of fuel, the head of the Hamas-run Palestinian enclave’s electricity provider told AFP.Samir Metir said that all the plant’s fuel, purchased with funding from Qatar and Turkey, had been used up.He said it was not clear when the Palestinian territory would receive more, owing to a “dispute” between the electricity authority in Gaza and Palestinian authorities in the West Bank. The Gaza Health Ministry warned of a humanitarian crisis as a result. The terror group Hamas seized power in Gaza in a violent coup in 2007 from the Ramallah-based Fatah organization of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas. Israel and Egypt then initiated a security blockade meant to prevent the terror group, avowedly committed to the destruction of Israel, from importing weaponry and materiel into Gaza.Fuel supply for the Strip’s two million inhabitants has been a long-running source of dispute, with most homes in Gaza receiving two eight-hour periods of electricity a day even when the plant is operating normally.Protests broke out in January over the power shortages, which the Gaza Health Ministry warned could have “dangerous consequences” for patients. As things stand, residents can expect two six-hour periods of electricity, Metir said, “including electricity bought from Israel and Egypt.”Israel last week warned of the upcoming fuel crisis, warning Hamas that it must pay for the diesel fuel it consumes, which is supplied by Israeli energy company Dor.In mid-September, Israel and the Palestinian Authority signed an agreement to resolve the Palestinians’ outstanding debt of almost NIS 2 billion ($530 million) to the Israel Electric Corporation. The agreement was signed by the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) Yoav Mordechai, Palestinian Authority Minister of Civil Affairs Hussein al-Sheik, Israel’s Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon and Israel’s Ministry of Finance Director-General Shai Babad. The IEC began to scale back the electricity flow to West Bank Palestinian cities in late May and early April due to the debt. Power supplies to Jericho and Bethlehem were limited, causing some blackouts, and the company threatened to do the same in other West Bank areas. The agreement with the IEC from September did not affect the situation in the Gaza Strip.

Pence: North Korea ‘provocation’ shows the risk to military-Visiting Seoul at start of Asian tour, vice president speaks of dangers faced by US and South Korean armies-By Ken Thomas April 16, 2017, 3:19 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — US Vice President Mike Pence said Sunday that North Korea’s “provocation” underscored the risks faced by American and South Korean service members, hours after the North conducted a failed missile launch shortly before Pence’s arrival.Pence landed in South Korea at the start of a 10-day trip to Asia and was quickly confronted with the stakes facing the United States as Pyongyang seeks to flex its muscles around the birth anniversary of the country’s late founder and advance the regime’s nuclear and missile capabilities. While Pence was aboard Air Force Two flying over the Bering Sea, a North Korean missile exploded during launch on Sunday, US and South Korean officials said, representing a high-profile failure that came as a powerful US aircraft supercarrier approaches the Korean Peninsula. After arriving in Seoul, the vice president placed a wreath at Seoul National Cemetery and then worshiped with military personnel at an Easter church service at the US Army Garrison Yongsan. During a fellowship meal after the services, he said the tensions on the Korean peninsula had put into sharp focus the importance of the joint US-South Korean mission.“This morning’s provocation from the North is just the latest reminder of the risks each one of you face every day in the defense of the freedom of the people of South Korea and the defense of America in this part of the world,” said Pence, who was introduced by Army Gen. Vincent Brooks, commander of US Forces Korea. “Your willingness to step forward, to serve, to stand firm without fear, inspires the nation and inspires the world.”Pence told the military members that he had spoken twice with President Donald Trump during the day.Pence said that under Trump’s leadership, “our resolve has never been stronger, our commitment to this historic alliance with the courageous people of South Korea has never been stronger and with your help and God’s help, freedom will ever prevail on this peninsula.”Trump has suggested that the US will take a tougher stance against North Korea, telling reporters last week: “North Korea is a problem. The problem will be taken care of.” He has repeatedly said if China, North Korea’s dominant trading partner, is unwilling to do more to pressure the North, the US might take the matter into its own hands.Along with the deployment of the Naval aircraft carrier and other vessels into waters off the Korean Peninsula, thousands of US and South Korean troops, tanks and other weaponry were also deployed last month in their biggest-ever joint military exercises. That led North Korea to issue routine threats of attacks on its rivals if they show signs of aggression.A White House foreign policy adviser told reporters aboard Air Force Two that the type of missile that North Korea tried to fire on Sunday was medium-range, and that it exploded about 4 to 5 seconds after it was launched.According to the adviser, the test had been expected and the US had good intelligence both before and after the launch. The adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the administration’s initial understanding of the launch, said there was no expected response from the Trump administration because there was no need for the US to reinforce the failure. The official said that had it been a nuclear test, “other actions would have been taken by the US.”North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests, including two last year. Recent satellite imagery suggests the country could conduct another underground nuclear test at any time.Despite North Korea’s provocations, US officials have said that the US doesn’t intend to use military force against North Korea in response to either a nuclear test or a missile launch. After a two-month policy review, officials settled on a policy dubbed “maximum pressure and engagement,” US officials said Friday. The administration’s immediate emphasis, the officials said, will be on increasing pressure on Pyongyang with the help of Beijing. The officials weren’t authorized to speak publicly on the results of the policy review and requested anonymity.Pence will be tasked with explaining the policy in meetings with leaders in South Korea and Japan at the start of his trip, which will also include stops in Indonesia and Australia. He will also aim to reassure allies in South Korea and Japan that the US will take appropriate steps to defend them against North Korean aggression.Pence’s first trip to South Korea carries personal meaning as well. He noted to the soldiers that his late father, Edward, served in the US Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star on April 15, 1953 — 64 years to the day of the vice president’s departure for South Korea. Pence displays in his office his father’s Bronze Star and a photograph of his father receiving the honor.

Trump: 'He is doing the wrong thing. He's making a big mistake'-Kim aide warns of possible ‘all-out war’ and ‘nuclear attacks’-As tensions mount with Washington, North Korean dictator oversees display of military strength-By Sebastien BERGER April 15, 2017, 6:50 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AFP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un Saturday saluted as ranks of goose-stepping soldiers followed by tanks and other military hardware paraded in Pyongyang for a show of strength with tensions mounting over his nuclear ambitions. After inspecting an honor guard, Kim, in a black suit, watched the parade pour into Kim Il-Sung Square, accompanied by top military and party leaders, state television showed in a live broadcast.Led by rows of military bands, columns of troops toting rifles and a troupe of sword-wielding female soldiers marched into the vast square in the heart of the city which was festooned in the national colors of blue, white and red.“Today’s parade will provide a chance to display our powerful military might,” a male voiceover said on the TV broadcast.Ostensibly the event is to mark the 105th anniversary of the birth of Kim’s grandfather, the North’s founder Kim Il-Sung -– a date known as the “Day of the Sun” in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the country’s official name. But it is also intended to send an unmistakable message to Washington about the isolated, nuclear-armed North’s military might.Kim did not address the rally, but his close aide Choe Ryong-Hae gave a defiant speech saying that Pyongyang would react in kind to any provocation — nuclear or otherwise.“We’re prepared to respond to an all-out war with an all-out war and we are ready to hit back with nuclear attacks of our own style against any nuclear attacks,” Choe said.Pyongyang is under multiple sets of United Nations sanctions over its atomic and ballistic missile programs, and has ambitions to build a rocket capable of delivering a warhead to the US mainland -– something US President Donald Trump has vowed “won’t happen.”It has carried out five nuclear tests –- two of them last year -– and multiple missile launches, one of which saw three rockets come down in waters provocatively close to Japan last month.Speculation that it could conduct a sixth blast in the coming days to coincide with the anniversary has reached fever pitch, with specialist US website 38North describing its Punggye-ri test site as “primed and ready” and White House officials saying military options were “already being assessed.”Trump has dispatched the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and an accompanying battle group to the Korean peninsula.“We are sending an armada. Very powerful,” Trump told the Fox Business Network. “He is doing the wrong thing,” he added of Kim. “He’s making a big mistake.”China, the North’s sole major ally, and Russia have both urged restraint, with Beijing’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi warning Friday that “conflict could break out at any moment.”North Korea’s army vowed Friday a “merciless” response to any US provocation but diplomats in Pyongyang are more sanguine, pointing out that the North raises its rhetoric every spring, when Washington and Seoul hold annual joint exercises that it views as preparations for invasion.None of the North’s five previous nuclear tests has taken place in the month of April.-Tough message-The hardware displayed Saturday included what appeared to be a new ICBM and a submarine-launched ballistic missile, which Pyongyang successfully test-fired last August, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said.Military specialists keep a close eye on Pyongyang’s military parades for clues about developments in the North’s capabilities. The 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty and Pyongyang says that it needs nuclear weapons to defend itself against a possible US invasion. The US cruise missile strike on Syria vindicated its stance, it said last weekend.Pyongyang could use the parade as a show of strength in preference to a nuclear test, analysts said.It wanted to send “a tough message to the United States in response to the Trump administration’s recent rhetoric and the military steps the United States has taken”, said Evans Revere of the Brookings Institution in Washington.Another missile launch or nuclear test “can’t be ruled out”, he said, but the Syria strike and Washington’s implied threats “may give Pyongyang some pause”.“A parade is a highly visible but non-kinetic way of showing off capabilities,” he told AFP.The North is aiming its message at China as well as the US, analysts say.Beijing has made clear its frustration with Pyongyang’s stubbornness but its priority remains preventing any instability on its doorstep, and it has been unnerved by the sabre-rattling.Pyongyang was “upset with all of its neighbors,” said Bruce Bennett of the Rand Organisation and Kim needs to “demonstrate defiance.”

Assad retains hundreds of tons of chemical weapons, says defected general-Regime hid deadly agents from international inspectors, reports Zaher al-Sakat, who himself was ordered to use the weapons against civilians-By Times of Israel staff and AFP April 15, 2017, 10:04 am

Syrian President Bashar Assad still possesses hundreds of tons of chemical agents which he hid from the international community, a former Syrian general who specialized in chemical warfare told the Telegraph Friday.Brig. Gen. Zaher al-Sakat, who defected from Assad’s forces in 2013 and currently resides in an undisclosed European country, told the newspaper the Syrian leader had deceived United Nations inspectors sent into the country to destroy his chemical stockpiles.Assad had agreed to turn in his entire chemical weapons inventory in 2013 when the US threatened military action after hundreds were killed in a deadly chemical attack on opposition-held suburbs of Damascus. But Sakat, who was head of chemical warfare in the Syrian army’s Fifth Division, has long claimed that Assad secretly held on to much of his stash. And after an April 4 suspected chemical attack killed at least 87 people, the defector has said the regime still has hundreds of tons of chemicals at hand.“They admitted only to 1,300 tons, but we knew in reality they had nearly double that,” Sakat told the Telegraph. “They had at least 2,000 tons. At least.”Sakat said that according to his contacts inside Syria, Assad has not manufactured new weapons since 2014, but “they don’t need any more, they have all they need already.”Sakat has said in the past that he himself was ordered to carry out chemical strikes on three different occasions before he defected. In those instances he switched out the deadly agents in the bombs for harmless chemicals.“I couldn’t believe at the beginning that Assad would use these weapons on his people,” he said. “I could not stand and watch the genocide. I couldn’t hurt my own people.”Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, the former commander of the UK’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Regimen, said Sakat’s claims of Assad’s retained stockpiles were “plausible.”He told the Telegraph that the recent alleged chemical strike on the town of Khan Sheikhoun appeared to use old sarin gas.“Eighty-six people were killed in the attack, which is not a lot for sarin,” he said. “Sarin degrades fairly quickly and becomes less toxic over time, so we could be looking at an attack using old sarin.”Assad this week said the reports on the recent chemical strike were “a “fabrication” to justify a US strike on his forces. The Syrian president insisted his forces had turned over all their chemical weapons stocks years ago and would never use the banned arms.“Definitely, 100 percent for us, it’s fabrication,” he said of the incident.Assad said evidence for the attack came only from “a branch of Al-Qaeda,” referring to a former jihadist affiliate that is among the groups that control Idlib province, where Khan Sheikhoun is located.Images of the aftermath, showing victims convulsing and foaming at the mouth, sent shockwaves around the world. But Assad insisted it was “not clear whether it happened or not, because how can you verify a video? You have a lot of fake videos now.”“We don’t know whether those dead children were killed in Khan Sheikhoun. Were they dead at all?”He said Khan Sheikhoun had no strategic value and was not currently a battle front.“This story is not convincing by any means.”The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has begun an investigation into the alleged attack, but Russia on Wednesday blocked a UN Security Council resolution demanding Syria cooperate with the probe. And Assad said he could “only allow any investigation when it’s impartial, when we make sure that unbiased countries will participate in this delegation in order to make sure that they won’t use it for politicized purposes.”He insisted several times that his forces had turned over all chemical weapons stockpiles in 2013. “There was no order to make any attack, we don’t have any chemical weapons, we gave up our arsenal a few years ago,” he said.“Even if we have them, we wouldn’t use them, and we have never used our chemical arsenal in our history.”The OPCW has blamed Assad’s government for at least two attacks in 2014 and 2015 involving the use of chlorine. The Khan Sheikhoun incident prompted the first direct US military action against Assad’s government since the war began, with 59 cruise missiles hitting the Shayrat airbase three days after the suspected chemical attack.

Rouhani: Iran does not need ‘permission to build missiles’-Iranian president says country’s weapons development solely for ‘deterrent power’ against US and ‘cancerous tumor’ Israel-By Alexander Fulbright April 15, 2017, 11:16 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday that Iran does not need “permission to build missiles,” in an apparent response to recent sanctions by the United States on the Islamic Republic’s ballistic missile program.“Iran will ask no soul’s permission to build missiles,” the state-run Press TV quoted him as saying.Speaking at a defense ministry event to show off new Iranian-made weapons, Rouhani claimed that the country’s development of ballistic missiles and other advanced arms is strictly for defensive purposes.“We have repeatedly declared that strengthening the defensive prowess of Iran’s Armed Forces is only aimed at defending the country and will never be used against another country,” he said.Despite Rouhani’s claim that Iran’s development of weapons is for strictly peaceful purposes, Israel and the US have accused the Islamic Republic with arming a number of terror groups and Shiite militias in the region engaged in offense operations, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis in Yemen and the Taliban in Afghanistan. In his remarks Saturday, Rouhani also said that Iran’s development of ballistic missiles was necessary to prevent “the crimes and acts of aggression” of the US and other regional powers.“Even if our region were completely secure and major powers were not present there, a country still needs deterrent power and the region requires balance,” he said.He also warned than any attempt to upset the regional balance of power would lead to problems, which he said has long been undermined by the “powers’ intervention and the cancerous tumor of Israel,” Press TV reported. After Iran test-fired a ballistic missile in January, the US imposed sanctions on a number of entities involved in Iran’s ballistic missile program, and US President Donald Trump warned the Islamic Republic it had been “put on notice.”Although Iran maintains that the testing of ballistic missiles is not banned by the 2015 nuclear deal designed to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, the US said that the sanctions were imposed for Iran’s violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2331, which calls upon Iran “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology.”Since January’s test-firing of a ballistic missile, Iran has carried out a number of other tests of ballistic, cruise and submarine-based missiles, while in March state television said Iran successfully tested the S-300 missile defense system delivered to it by Russia following the 2015 nuclear deal after years of delay. In addition to disagreements over Iran’s missile program, tensions between the two countries were further ratcheted up after the US struck an airfield with 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles belonging to the Syrian regime — of which Iran has lang been a key backer — in response to a chemical weapons strike carried out by the Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces earlier this month, with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei labeling the US strike as a “strategic mistake.”

Russia, Iran and Syria issue warning to US-Countries warn of ‘grave consequences’ if Washington carries out further missile strikes against Assad regime-By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV April 15, 2017, 4:00 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia, Syria and Iran strongly warned the United States Friday against launching new strikes on Syria and called for an international investigation of the chemical weapons attack there that killed nearly 90 people.Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who hosted his Iranian and Syrian counterparts in Moscow, denounced the US missile strikes on Syria as a “flagrant violation” of international law. Additional such actions would entail “grave consequences not only for regional but global security,” Lavrov said.Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem said the meeting sent a “strong message” to Washington. Iran’s Mohammad Javad Zarif emphasized that the participants agreed that unilateral actions by the US were unacceptable. The US accuses the Syrian government of deliberately launching the deadly chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun on April 4. Russia has alleged that the victims were killed by toxic agents from a rebel chemical arsenal hit by Syrian war planes.Moscow has warned against putting the blame on Damascus until an independent inquiry is conducted and vetoed a proposed UN resolution on the attack, saying it failed to mention the need to inspect the affected area.Lavrov on Friday expressed skepticism about a preliminary investigation conducted by the UN’s chemical weapons watchdog. He alleged that its experts failed to visit the site and said it was unclear to Russia where evidence was taken and how it was-In Russia’s view, the probe conducted by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons should be widened to include experts from many nations, he said.“If our US colleagues and some European nations believe that their version is right, they have no reason to fear the creation of such an independent group,” Lavrov added. “The investigation into this high-profile incident must be transparent and leave no doubt that someone is trying to hide something.”Lavrov said the US strike on the Syrian base has undermined peace efforts in Syria and reflected Washington’s focus on ousting Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government.“Such attempts won’t succeed,” he said. The three ministers also discussed the beefing up of US forces on Jordan’s border with Syria, Moallem said. He added that Russia, Iran and Syria have “common procedures against any aggression,” but wouldn’t offer specifics.Lavrov said Moscow has asked Washington about the purpose of the buildup and received assurances that the US troops were deployed there to cut supply lines between the Islamic State group factions in Syria and Iraq.“We will keep monitoring the issue, since the only possible reason for using military force on the territory of Syria is to fight terrorism,” Lavrov said.Russia has staunchly backed Assad’s government throughout Syria’s six-year civil war. It has conducted an air campaign in Syria since September 2015, saving Assad’s government from imminent collapse and helping to reverse the Syrian military’s fortunes.

What would a hardline new president mean for Iran and the world?-Ebrahim Raisi, leading challenger to incumbent Hassan Rouhani, could leave Tehran’s tenuous opening to the West in jeopardy-By Eric RANDOLPH and Ali Noorani April 15, 2017, 8:14 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

TEHRAN (AFP) — Ebrahim Raisi, the leading candidate for Iran’s hardliners in next month’s presidential election, has left many wondering whether the country’s fragile opening to the West could be under threat. The 56-year-old judge and cleric registered on Friday for the May 19 vote and his candidacy is being closely watched by foreign investors and diplomats who fear the return of a hardline administration that could threaten the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and efforts to open up trade. So far, Raisi has given little indication of his views on foreign policy, keeping his comments vague and predictable.“Our relations will be ongoing with every country — except the occupying regime of Israel — but on condition of respect,” he said Friday.Analysts describe Raisi as utterly loyal to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, meaning he would likely remain deeply suspicious of engagement with the West but unlikely to backtrack on the nuclear deal, which had the boss’s tacit consent.“He has no experience in foreign policy, so at least initially he will have to follow the system’s grand strategy of preserving the nuclear deal and shifting any blame of undermining it to the US,” said Ali Vaez, Iran analyst for the International Crisis Group.Raisi is entrenched in the conservative establishment, having served as attorney general, supervisor of state broadcaster IRIB and prosecutor in the Special Court for Clerics.Press reports indicate he has recently been elevated to the status of “ayatollah.”His father-in-law leads Friday prayers in Mashhad and both have seats on the Assembly of Experts that will choose the next supreme leader — a position for which Raisi himself is often rumoured to be in the running. There is little chance he will ease social restrictions or release opposition leaders held under house arrest since the 2009 protest movement, known to conservatives as “the sedition.”“The Islamic System has treated the heads of the sedition with mercy. Those who sympathize with the heads of sedition must know that the great nation of Iran will never forgive this great injustice,” he said in 2014.Crucially, Khamenei picked him in March 2016 to head Astan Qods Razavi — the centuries-old foundation that looks after the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad — placing him at the intersection of political, religious and economic power. The foundation hosts 20 million pilgrims a year at the shrine, and has also developed into a sprawling, multi-billion-dollar conglomerate that runs everything from farms and power plants to brokerages and IT firms. One big question is why Raisi would risk a run for the presidency if he has ambitions to become supreme leader as many speculate.“If he loses, his status will be damaged, so it seems like a big risk,” said a Western diplomat on condition of anonymity.“Moreover, all presidents end up facing criticism from the supreme leader — that’s how the system is set up — so why put himself in that position?”The presidency could provide a stepping stone to the top — as it was for Khamenei in the 1980s.“But if he loses to the incumbent, who has no rivals in his own camp and has remarkable executive credentials, Raisi’s future rise to the peak will be in question,” said Vaez. For now, Raisi has focused on domestic economic issues, playing to the conservative base among poorer, more religious voters.“Despite four decades of the Islamic system and many promising achievements, people are still suffering chronic problems,” he said when announcing his bid last week. The 12 percent jobless rate and slow trickle down of benefits from the nuclear deal are seen as Rouhani’s weak spots.“Raisi’s lifestyle is modest and he regularly stays with the poor sections of society, while Mr. Rouhani has more of an aristocratic, comfort-seeking spirit,” said Hamid Reza Taraghi, a member of the conservative Islamic Coalition Party. His opponents are unimpressed.“Mr. Raisi has absolutely no plan to manage the country. Even (former hardline president Mahmud) Ahmadinejad had more experience and he was disastrous for the economy,” said reformist Tehran-based economist Saeed Laylaz.Ahmadinejad, of course, is also running for president.

US: North Korean test missile explodes on launch-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-April 16, 2017

SEOUL, Korea, Republic Of — A North Korean missile exploded during launch Sunday, U.S. and South Korean officials said, a high-profile failure that comes as a powerful U.S. aircraft supercarrier approaches the Korean Peninsula in a show of force. It wasn't immediately clear what kind of missile was test-fired from the east coast city of Sinpo. But the failure will sting in Pyongyang because it comes a day after one of the biggest North Korean propaganda events of the year— celebrations of the 105th birthday of late North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, the current leader's grandfather. The North's test firing can be seen as a message of defiance to the Trump administration in Washington, coming as it does on the day U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence is set to arrive in Seoul for talks on North Korea.President Donald Trump was uncharacteristically quiet about the failed launch. In a statement, Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said Trump and his military team "are aware of North Korea's most recent unsuccessful missile launch. The president has no further comment."Washington and Seoul will try hard to figure out what exactly North Korea fired. This matters because while North Korea regularly launches short-range missiles, it is also developing mid-range and long-range missiles meant to target U.S. troops in Asia and, eventually, the U.S. mainland. The ultimate goal is to have a full array of nuclear-tipped missiles in response to what Pyongyang says is hostility by Washington and Seoul meant to topple its government. North Korea is thought to have a small arsenal of atomic bombs and an impressive array of short- and medium-range missiles. Many outside analysts believe that North Korea has not yet mastered the technology to build warheads small enough to place on long-range missiles, though some civilian experts say North Korea can already build nuclear-tipped shorter range missiles that have South Korea and Japan within its striking range. The U.S. Pacific Command said in a statement that Sunday's missile exploded on launch. South Korea's Defence Ministry said it was analyzing exactly how the North Korean launch failed. Neither military knew what kind of missile was fired. In Seoul, South Korea's presidential office convened a national security council meeting to examine security postures.Always high animosity has risen on the Korean Peninsula in recent months, as the United States and South Korea conduct annual war games that North Korea claims are invasion preparation and the North prepared for Saturday's anniversary celebrations. A U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson, is heading to waters off Korea in a show of force.Analysts warn that even failed missile launches provide valuable knowledge to North Korea as it tries to build its weapons program. The country launched a long-range rocket and conducted two nuclear tests last year, including its most powerful to date.Aside from improving the technology, North Korean missile and nuclear tests are seen by outside analysts partly as efforts to bolster the domestic image of leader Kim Jong Un and apply political pressure on Seoul and Washington.Kim Jong Un has overseen three nuclear tests and a string of missile and rocket launches since taking over after the death of his father, dictator Kim Jong Il, in late 2011.Another missile test from Sinpo failed earlier this month, when the rocket spun out of control and plunged into the ocean. That launch came shortly before Trump's first meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. China is North Korea's only major ally. The extended-range Scud missile in that earlier launch suffered an in-flight failure and fell into the sea off North Korea's east coast, according to U.S. imagery and assessments.Despite Sunday's failure, the North's previous claim to have used "standardized" warheads has led to worries that it was making headway in its push to develop small and sophisticated warheads to be topped on long-range missiles.Washington sees North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles as a threat to world security and to its Asian allies, Japan and South Korea. The United States, South Korea and other countries have vowed to apply more pressure on the North, but so far nothing has worked to stop Pyongyang's nuclear program.Six-nation negotiations on dismantling North Korea's nuclear program in exchange for aid fell apart in early 2009.Foster Klug And Hyung-Jin Kim, The Associated Press.

U.S., allies weigh options after North Korea's missile test - adviser-[Reuters]-By Lucia Mutikani and Sue-Lin Wong-YAHOONEWS-April 16, 2017

WASHINGTON/PYONGYANG (Reuters) - The United States, its allies and China are working together on a range of responses to North Korea's latest attempted ballistic missile test, U.S. President Donald Trump's national security adviser said on Sunday, citing what he called an international consensus to act."We are working together with our allies and partners and with the Chinese leadership to develop a range of options," national security adviser H.R. McMaster said on ABC's "This Week" program."This latest missile test just fits into a pattern of provocative and destabilizing and threatening behavior on the part of the North Korean regime," McMaster said.He said the president has asked the national security council to integrate the efforts of the Defense and State departments and U.S. intelligence agencies to develop options if "this pattern of behavior continues and if the North Korean Regime refuses to denuclearize.""There is an international consensus now, including the Chinese leadership, that this is a situation that just cannot continue," McMaster said. The North Korean missile "blew up almost immediately" after its test launch on Sunday, the U.S. Pacific Command said.Hours later U.S. Vice President Mike Pence landed in South Korea for talks on the North's increasingly defiant arms program. His visit comes a day after North Korea held a grand military parade in its capital city of Pyongyang, marking the birth anniversary of the state founder. What appeared to be new long-range ballistic missiles were on display in the parade.Tensions have been steadily rising as Trump takes a hard rhetorical line with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who has rebuffed admonitions from China and proceeded with nuclear and missile programs seen by Washington as a direct threat.Trump on Sunday acknowledged that the softer line he has taken on China's management of its currency was linked to China's help on the North Korea issue."Why would I call China a currency manipulator when they are working with us on the North Korean problem? We will see what happens!" Trump said on Twitter. Trump has backed away from a campaign promise to label China in that way.South Korea said the North's latest show of force "threatened the whole world."But a U.S. foreign policy adviser travelling with Pence on Air Force Two sought to defuse some of the tension, saying the test of what was believed to be a medium-range missile had come as no surprise."We had good intelligence before the launch and good intelligence after the launch," the adviser told reporters on condition of anonymity."It's a failed test. It follows another failed test. So really no need to reinforce their failure. We don't need to expend any resources against that."The adviser said the missile's flight lasted four or five seconds.Pence, addressing an Easter service with American troops in South Korea, said the U.S. commitment to South Korea was unwavering."Let me assure you under President Trump's leadership, our resolve has never been stronger. Our commitment to this historic alliance with the courageous people of South Korea has never been stronger."Pence was beginning a 10-day trip to Asia in what his aides said was a sign of U.S. commitment to its ally in the face of rising tension. The U.S. nuclear-powered Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group is also heading to the region. (http://tmsnrt.rs/2p1yGTQ) China, which Trump has urged to do more to rein in North Korea, has spoken out against its weapons tests and has supported U.N. sanctions. It has repeatedly called for talks while appearing increasingly frustrated with the North.China banned imports of North Korean coal on Feb. 26, cutting off its most important export. China's customs department issued an order on April 7 telling traders to return North Korean coal cargoes, said trading sources with knowledge of the order.-TENSIONS RISE-Trump's decision to order a cruise missile strike on a Syrian airfield this month, in response to what he said was Syria's use of chemical weapons, raised questions about his plans for reclusive North Korea.Pyongyang has conducted several missile and nuclear tests in defiance of U.N. sanctions, and regularly threatens to destroy South Korea and the United States."The president has made clear that he will not accept the United States and its allies and partners in the region being under threat from this hostile regime with nuclear weapons," McMaster told ABC.But McMaster, who was speaking from Kabul, Afghanistan, acknowledged the likelihood of North Korean retaliation if Washington uses military force in an attempt to stop its weapons programs."What (is) particularly difficult about -- about dealing with this regime, is that it is unpredictable," he said."It's time for us to undertake all actions we can, short of a military option, to try to resolve this peacefully," he said.South Korea, which hosts 28,500 U.S. troops and holds a presidential election on May 9, warned of punitive action if the Sunday launch led to further provocation."North Korea showing a variety of offensive missiles at yesterday's military parade and daring to fire a ballistic missile today is a show of force that threatens the whole world," South Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.Impoverished North Korea and the rich, democratic South are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. The North has warned of a nuclear strike against the United States if provoked. It has said it has developed and would launch a missile that can strike the mainland United States but officials and experts believe it is some time away from mastering the necessary technology, including miniaturising a nuclear warhead.North Korea launched a ballistic missile from the same region this month, ahead of a summit between the United States and China in Florida to discuss the North's arms program. But that missile, which U.S. officials said appeared to be a liquid-fuelled, extended-range Scud, only flew about 60 km (40 miles), a fraction of its range, before spinning out of control.Tension had escalated sharply amid concern the North may conduct a sixth nuclear test or a ballistic missile test around Saturday's 105th anniversary of the birth of founding father Kim Il Sung, what it calls the "Day of the Sun".China's top diplomat, Yang Jiechi, and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson exchanged views on the "situation on the Korean peninsula" by phone on Sunday, China's official Xinhua News Agency said. Yang said the two sides should maintain dialogue.-FLOWER SHOW-In Pyongyang, there was a festive atmosphere at a flower show, with families out, taking pictures with North Korean-made smart phones. There was no mention of the test failure by the KCNA state news agency.Company worker Rim Chung Ryol, 30, said he had not heard of the test."If it is a failure, then failure is the mother of success," he told Reuters.Factory worker Ri Gul Chol, 37, also had not heard about the missile test."But whatever Kim Jong Un decides and instructs will succeed and all the citizens will support him," he said.(Additional reporting by Roberta Rampton and Ju-min Park in SEOUL, Joseph Campbell and Philip Wen in DANDONG, Christian Shepherd in BEIJING, Daniel Trotta in NEW YORK and Caren Bohan in WASHINGTON; Writing by Nick Macfie and Warren Strobel; Editing by Robert Birsel, Keith Weir and Diane Craft)

Central Alberta First Nation declares state of emergency from heavy snowfall-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-April 15, 2017

A central Alberta First Nation has declared a local state of emergency after heavy snowfall cut power and water for more than 24 hours.Kehewin Cree Nation, a community of about 1,000 people 20 kilometres south of Bonnyville, lost power around 12:30 p.m. Friday. The power outage shut down the community's main waterline.Kehewin activated emergency response teams Saturday morning, sending health centre staff to check on sick, elderly and pregnant residents. The situation escalated to a local state of emergency at 3:30 p.m. Saturday."We're starting to get many homes with food spoilage," spokesperson Shannon Hambly said. "The homes that have taken in people are running out of resources."Some residents have taken in as many as 20 people, she said."I'm worried because we do have members who have been phoning in and they're worried about our elderly," Hambly said. "We have diabetics and we have people with heart conditions ... there's a lot of concern out there."Despite some repairs, half of the more than 250 homes in Kehewin are still without power. Water trucks are running low and struggling to access snowed-in homes, Hambly added."The homes have gotten a lot colder," she added. "We're trying to prepare in case we have to go without power for another 24 hours."A message to Kehewin's residents urged them to conserve water."If you have limited [water] or are running out of bottled water please call in so we can work on exchanging for fresh water to be dropped off," read the statement, posted to Facebook."If you have been without food or have no way to cook for yourself, please call in so something to eat could be delivered."Friday's snowstorm also damaged power lines of nearby communities in central and eastern Alberta, including St. Paul, Glendon, Bonnyville, La Corey, Ardmore and Cold Lake.Wet snowfall piled higher than 30 centimetres in some areas, snapping electrical lines as it froze."Heavy, wet snow swept across the central and northern portions of our province," said Brent Kobelka, ATCO director of distribution operations."It's created some power interruptions that our crews have been working to restore over the last couple days."Poor road conditions and deep snow are slowing ATCO crews, Kobelka added. All crews are working on a 24/7 rotation to restore power.Kobelka did not give an estimate for how many people have been affected or when power will be restored.

Flooding cuts off aid supplies, escape route from west Mosul-[Reuters]-By Ulf Laessing-YAHOONEWS-April 16, 2017

THIBANIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - Flooding has made all bridges across the Tigris in and out of western Mosul impassable, cutting off aid supplies and escape routes for people fleeing the Islamic State-held part of the Iraqi city. With the bridges down, hundreds of civilians crossed the surging river on small wooden boats on Sunday, some carrying babies and all carting suitcases or bags full of clothes. They were some of the around 400,000 people still in western Mosul where Iraqi military forces are trying to dislodge IS from the Old City.Mosul's permanent bridges over the Tigris river have been destroyed during the fighting, but the army had built two pontoon bridges which had allowed people to flee to safety in the east, and aid to get through to a camp for the displaced on the western side of the river. But since the bridges were closed on Friday, no aid convoy has reached the Hammam al-Alil camp, southwest of Mosul, the main arrival point for displaced fleeing the fighting, a camp and a U.N. official said.It was unlcear whether the bridges had become submerged or damaged by the floods, but soldiers blocking the approach roads said they were unusable."The flooding has had a big impact. All road traffic has stopped," said an official at Hammam al-Alil, home to some 30,000 displaced people."We have limited supplies left."The camp, like other facilities in western Mosul, is supplied by road from Erbil, some 80 km (50 miles) to the east, in the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region where aid agencies are based.Issam al-Jibouri, a displaced resident who went by boat to western Mosul to take supplies to needy relatives, said: "We urge more efforts to reconstruct the bridges or bring larger boats."Like others, he had to pay 1,000 Iraqi dinars ($1) for the brief trip."People are suffering," said Mohammed Ahmed, a villager.(Editing by Robin Pomeroy)

Iceberg (season) right ahead! N.L. tours start May 1-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-April 15, 2017

They are majestic, best seen up close, offer a unique way of chilling beverages — and the iceberg tourism season gets underway in less than three weeks."It's 18 more days. I'm counting them down now," said skipper Barry Rogers, who owns Iceberg Quest Ocean Tours, which has departures out of St. John's and Twillingate.Business is already booming, he said on Wednesday."We do a tremendous amount of online bookings and they're coming in by the dozens every day. So we're pretty happy about that."-Iceberg 'sweet spot'-Rogers said it looks to be a promising start to the season as "there are tons of bergs out there."He hopes they stick around — specifically, in the sweet spot."When they come in along the shoreline, and go grounded, we are very happy about that," he told CBC Radio's St. John's Morning Show. Iceberg Quest Ocean Tours offers two-to-three-hour tours that can accommodate up to 100 people. Rogers said the time and maximum distance of each excursion are important calculations because the Atlantic Ocean is anything but predictable.-'Bucket list destination'-Rogers said seeing an iceberg up close is truly a once-in-a-lifetime aspiration for a lot of people who come from across the world to visit the province."There are folks who have saved a half a lifetime to make this trip here to Newfoundland and Labrador. It's truly a bucket list destination."Rogers said simply viewing an iceberg is a wondrous experience in itself, but some get the rare opportunity to hear a berg "talk.""When the icebergs collapse, there's a lot of debris ice around the vessel and in the ice itself there are air bubbles that are pure oxygen ... And [the ice] of course begins to melt [in the water] and that hissing noise, like a bunch of cats hissing all the time," he said.Rogers said there is another added benefit to seeing icebergs while out to sea instead of from the shore."I mean, a splash of Demerara rum or Newfoundland Screech over 12,000-year old-iceberg ice, it's medicinal, I tell ya," he said."Folks love it."

POISONED WATERS

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land,(EARTH) because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2  By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3  Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

ZEPHANIAH 1:2-3
2  I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3  I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.

EZEKIEL 32:6-9
6  I will also water with thy blood the land wherein thou swimmest, even to the mountains; and the rivers shall be full of thee.
7  And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.
8  All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord GOD.
9  I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known.

REVELATION 8:8-11
8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood:(bitter,Poisoned) and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.(poisoned)

REVELATION 16:3-7
3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.(enviromentalists won't like this result)
4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
6 For they(False World Church and Dictator) have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.

Ferry leaks 400 L of gear oil into Kootenay Lake, B.C.[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-April 15, 2017

The main car ferry that crosses Kootenay Lake, B.C., has leaked about 400 litres of gear oil into the lake, leaving a large slick on the water near the dock. The leak happened at about 9 a.m. PT on Saturday morning.A manager with Western Pacific Marine, the company that operates the ferry, said the leak was a result of the "catastrophic failure" of one of the Osprey 2000's four propulsion units while the vessel was in transit.Every measure was made to contain the leak, he said, and the company is still investigating the extent of the damage. The ferry is expected to be out of service for at least another month, he said.Interior Health is cautioning people to avoid recreational use along a 400-metre stretch of the shoreline next to the Balfour Ferry Terminal. The health authority said there doesn't appear to be any drinking water intakes in the area, but people should avoid swimming or letting their pets in the water there. According to DriveBC, a smaller capacity ferry, the MV Balfour, is still running on its winter schedule. With files from Bob Keating.

20 arrested in California pro and anti-Trump rallies-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-April 16, 2017

BERKELEY, Calif. — At least 20 people were arrested after violence broke out Saturday between groups of supporters and detractors of President Donald Trump holding rallies in downtown Berkeley, authorities said.About 200 people were at Berkeley's Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park when several fights broke out. Dozens of police officers in riot gear standing nearby quickly arrested one man. Others were arrested after several skirmishes.Trump supporters announced earlier in the week that they were holding a "Patriot Day" at the park at noon that would feature speeches by members of the alt-right, an amorphous fringe movement that uses internet memes, message boards and social media to spread a hodgepodge of racism, anti-Semitism, misogyny and xenophobia. Counter-demonstrators then said they would hold a rally at the same place at 10 a.m.Police put in a makeshift barrier of plastic orange poles and orange fence mesh to separate both sides, but that quickly came down as demonstrators started punching and kicking each other, while pepper spray and firecrackers were thrown to the crowd. After the barrier was put back in place, demonstrators shouted at each other from a distance, the San Francisco Chronicle reported."You go back to the '60s," shouted a pro-Trump supporter."You go back to the 1400s," someone on the opposing side shouted back-The groups then left the park and walked on Berkeley streets with police closely following them. Photographs of the scene showed at least two men with bloodied faces.Authorities had said ahead of the rallies, that baseball bats, sticks, flagpoles and any items that could be used as a weapon were banned at the park. Officers on Saturday confiscated sticks, knives, flagpoles and helmets and sticks with signs on them. The rally followed March 4 demonstrations at the same park planned by some of the same groups and that ended in violent clashes. Several people were injured and police arrested 10 demonstrators. In February, protesters threw rocks, broke windows and set fires outside the University of California, Berkeley's student union building, where then-Breitbart News editor and provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos was set to speak. His presentation was cancelled. The Associated Press.

Pope decries 'vile' attack on Syrians in Easter address-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-April 16, 2017

VATICAN CITY — On Christianity's most joyful day, Pope Francis lamented the horrors generated by war and hatred, delivering an Easter Sunday message that also decried the "latest vile" attack on civilians in Syria. Both in his impromptu homily during Mass in St. Peter's Square and later in his formal "Urbi et Orbi" Easter message delivered from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, Francis reflected on a litany of suffering in the world, including wars, oppressive regimes, human trafficking, corruption, famine and domestic violence. He encouraged people to hold fast in their "fearful hearts" to faith, acknowledging that many people wonder where God is amid so much evil and suffering in the world. Some 60,000 people, including multi-national throngs of pilgrims and tourists, endured tight anti-terrorism security checks — and, later, a brief downpour — to hear Francis and receive his blessing. The crowd size, cited by the Vatican security forces, was smaller in comparison to some other Easters, when about 100,000 turned out for the occasion. After Mass, Francis toured the square in his open-topped, white popemobile and waved back to well-wishers.In his balcony address, Francis prayed that God would sustain those working to comfort and help the civilian population in Syria, "prey to a war that continues to sow horror and death."He cited the explosion Saturday that ripped through a bus depot in the Aleppo area where evacuees were awaiting transfer, killing at least 100 people."Yesterday saw the latest vile attack on fleeing refugees," the pope said, also praying for peace in the Holy Land, Iraq and Yemen.Separately, in a letter he sent to the bishop of Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis, whose name he chose for his papacy, the pope decried the "scandalous reality of a world still marked by the divide between the endless number of indigent" and the "tiny portion of those who possess the majority of riches and presume to decide the fates of humanity."Francis has repeatedly championed the dignity of migrants fleeing war, persecution or poverty. On Sunday he recalled "all those forced to leave their homelands as a result of armed conflicts, terrorist attacks, famine and oppressive regimes."The church's first pontiff from Latin America voiced concern over the "political and social tensions" in the world as well as the "scourge of corruption" on his home continent. Francis also mentioned hostilities and famine plaguing parts of Africa.Speaking of Europe's problems, Francis cited the continued conflict and bloodshed in Ukraine and prayed for hope for those struggling with high unemployment, especially young people.Traditionally, the pope gives no homily during the late-morning Easter Mass, saving his reflections for the "Urbi et Orbi" message at noon. But Francis broke with that tradition, giving an off-the-cuff homily during Mass about what he described as a nagging question for many faithful: Why are there so many tragedies and wars if Jesus has risen from the dead, a belief that Christians celebrate each Easter?"The Church never ceases to say, faced with our defeats, our closed and fearful hearts, 'stop, the Lord is risen.' But if the Lord is risen, how come these things happen?" Francis asked. He gestured toward the potted hyacinths, tulips and daffodils, which came from the Netherlands, and which were arranged in neat rows on the steps leading to the imposing church.Easter "isn't a party with lots of flowers. This is pretty, but it's not this, it's more than this," Francis said.He said having faith on Easter gives sense in the middle of "so many calamities: the sense of looking beyond, the sense of saying, look, there isn't a wall, there's a horizon, there's life, there's joy."___Frances D'Emilio is on twitter at a href='http://www.twitter.com/fdemilio%3c'www.twitter.com/fdemilio/a-Frances D'Emilio, The Associated Press.

Pakistan hate speech investigation against clerics after student killed for alleged blasphemy-[Reuters]-By Jibran Ahmed-YAHOONEWS-April 16, 2017

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, (Reuters) - Pakistani police opened a hate speech investigation involving two Muslim clerics on Sunday after the killing of a university student over allegations he committed blasphemy. The clerics are accused of attempting to disrupt the funeral of student Mashal Khan, who was beaten to death by fellow students after a dormitory debate was followed by accusations of blasphemy being spread across a university campus in the northern city of Maradan.University officials had issued a public notification hours before the murder naming three students being investigated for "blasphemous activities".Blasphemy is an extremely sensitive topic in Muslim majority Pakistan, where penalties range from small fines to the death sentence, and dozens of people are on death row in the country's jails. There have been at least 65 recorded cases of vigilante murders since 1990, according to figures from a Center for Research and Security Studies report and local media. In a statement released to the press on Saturday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said he was "shocked and saddened by the senseless display of mob justice that resulted in the murder of a young student, Mashal Khan, at Wali Khan University".Mardan police chief Alam Shinwari said 20 people had been identified as culpable in the killing on the basis of videos taken during the attack, and 15 had been arrested. He said they would be tried by anti-terrorism courts.Police say they are also investigating the clerics in Khan's hometown of Swabi, some 60 kilometers south of Mardan, for attempting to disrupt funeral proceedings and instigate hatred against the dead student's family."The two clerics ... [used] the mosque loudspeaker for hate speech against the slain student and his family and ... created hurdles for the people and another cleric to participate in the funeral," a senior Swabi police official told Reuters.  He spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of being targeted by religious hardliners.A local imam had refused to lead the funeral prayers at Khan's funeral on Friday, according to Swabi resident Salman Ahmed. A technician who was asked to do so in the cleric's place was confronted by several people afterwards. In his press release, the prime minister said the perpetrators of the attack would be brought to justice."The nation should stand united to condemn this crime and to promote tolerance and rule of law in society," Sharif said. However, Pakistan's government has been vocal about blasphemy in recent months, with Sharif issuing an order in March for the removal of content deemed blasphemous online and threatening "strict punishment" for those violating the law.(Writing by Saad Sayeed; Editing by Andrew Bolton)

Iraqi forces making new push toward Old City in Mosul-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-April 16, 2017

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi forces launched a new attack on Islamic State in Mosul's Old City on Sunday, military officials said, trying to break the stalemate in attempts to seize the militants' last stronghold.Mosul, Iraq's second biggest city, was captured by the Sunni Muslim fighters in 2014, but government forces have retaken much of it during a six-month operation. The advance has hardly moved for more than a month, though, as the militants are holding out in the densely populated Old City in western Mosul, where tanks and heavy vehicles are not able to operate because of its narrow streets.Iraq's federal police moved forces 200 meters deeper into the Old City, getting closer to al-Nuri mosque, a statement said. The mosque is highly symbolic because it was there that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared himself head of a self-proclaimed caliphate.Troops have had the centuries-old mosque with its leaning minaret in their sights since last month.A captain in the federal police said Sunday's advance had started in the early morning with troops fighting the militants house to house."Daesh suicide motorcycles now are their favorite weapon inside the Old City," he said, using a derogatory name for Islamic State. "We have to watch every single house to avoid attackers on motorcycles packed with explosives."Iraqi government forces, backed by U.S. advisers, artillery and air support, have cleared the east and half of western Mosul and are now focused on the Old City. Some 400,000 people are trapped in the Old City while more than 300,000 have fled fighting since the operation started in October, officials have said.(Reporting by Ahmed Rasheed and Isabel Coles; Writing by Ulf Laessing; Editing by Andrew Bolton)

IS attacked Iraq forces with chemical weapons: military-[AFP]-YAHOONEWS-April 16, 2017

Baghdad (AFP) - The Islamic State group used chemical weapons against Iraqi forces taking part in the operation to recapture Mosul, injuring some security personnel, the military said on Sunday.IS has periodically carried out attacks using chemical weapons, but both the toll and the impact on military operations has been minimal and the jihadists' bombs and bullets are far deadlier."The Daesh terrorist gangs tried to block the advance of our forces by using shells filled with toxic chemical material, but the effect was limited," Iraq's Joint Operations Command said in a statement, using an Arabic acronym for IS.The attack on Saturday did not result in any deaths but did cause "limited injuries" among security personnel, the military command said. The statement said that the forces attacked were part of the massive operation aimed at recapturing the city of Mosul from IS, but did not specify if the attack took place in or outside the city.Iraqi forces are fighting to recapture west Mosul from IS after retaking the eastern side earlier this year, while soldiers and pro-government paramilitaries are also operating west of the city as part of the operation. The jihadist group overran large areas north and west of Baghdad in 2014, but Iraqi forces backed by US-led air strikes have since regained much of the territory they lost.In addition to parts of western Mosul, IS also holds part of Iraq's Kirkuk province as well as areas in the country's west.

Mass evacuation in Syria to proceed after blast kill 68 kids-[Associated Press]-BASSEM MROUE-YAHOONEWS-April 16, 2017

BEIRUT (AP) — More than 3,000 Syrians were expected to be evacuated Sunday from four areas as part of a population transfer that was briefly stalled a day earlier by a deadly blast that killed more than 120 people, many of them government supporters. As the evacuations were expected to begin Sunday, shells fired by the Islamic State group on government-held parts of the eastern city of Deir el-Zour wounded two members of a Russian media delegation visiting the area, according to state-run Syrian news agency SANA. Russia is a main backer of Syrian President Bashar Assad and Russian journalists enjoy wide access in government-held parts of the country. The United Nations is not overseeing the transfer deal, which involves residents of the pro-government villages of Foua and Kfarya and the opposition-held towns of Madaya and Zabadani. All four have been under siege for years, their fate linked through a series of reciprocal agreements that the U.N. says have hindered aid deliveries.Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, and Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV said 3,000 people will be evacuated from Foua and Kfarya, while 200, the vast majority of them fighters, will be evacuated from Zabadani and Madaya.Abdurrahman said Saturday's blast —which hit an area where thousands of pro-government evacuees had been waiting for hours — killed 126. He said the dead included 109 people from Foua and Kfarya, among them 80 children and 13 women. No one has claimed the attack, but both the Islamic State group and the al-Qaida-affiliated Fatah al-Sham Front have targeted civilians in government areas in the past.A wounded girl, who said she lost her siblings in the blast, told Al-Manar TV from her hospital bed that children who had been deprived of food for years in the two villages were approached by a man in the car who told them to come and eat potato chips. She said once many had gathered, there was an explosion that tore some of the children to pieces. After the blast, some 60 buses carrying 2,200 people, including 400 opposition fighters, entered areas held by rebels in the northern province of Aleppo, Abdurrahman said. More than 50 buses and 20 ambulances carrying some 5,000 Foua and Kfarya residents entered the government-held city of Aleppo, Syrian state TV said, with some of them later reaching a shelter in the village of Jibreen to the south.U.N. relief coordinator Stephen O'Brien said he was "horrified" by the deadly bombing, and that while the U.N. was not involved in the transfer it was ready to "scale up our support to evacuees."He called on all parties to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law, and to "facilitate safe and unimpeded access for the U.N. and its partners to bring life-saving help to those in need."Residents of Madaya and Zabadani, formerly summer resorts, joined the 2011 uprising against President Bashar Assad. Both came under government siege in the ensuing civil war. Residents of Foua and Kfraya, besieged by the rebels, have lived under a steady hail of rockets and mortars for years, but were supplied with food and medicine through military airdrops.Critics say the string of evacuations, which could see some 30,000 people moved across battle lines over the next 60 days, amounts to forced displacement along political and sectarian lines. In eastern Syria, an airstrike by the U.S.-led coalition on the village of Sukkarieh near the border with Iraq killed eight civilians who had earlier fled violence in the northern province of Aleppo, according to Deir Ezzor 24, an activist collective, and Sound and Picture Organization, which documents IS violations.Airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition had killed dozens of civilians over the past several weeks as the battle against the extremists intensifies in Syria and Iraq.

Iraqi Christians mark first post-IS Easter in recaptured town-[AFP]-Ali Choukeir-YAHOONEWS-April 16, 2017

Qaraqosh (Iraq) (AFP) - Qaraqosh is quiet except for a church bell ringing as Iraqi Christians gather for the first Easter mass since the town was retaken from the Islamic State jihadist group.IS graffiti mars the walls of the Mar Yohanna church, its bell rings from a tower damaged in the fighting and most of Qaraqosh's residents are still displaced more than five months after the town's recapture. But for worshippers, the mass is a sign of hope and better things to come, a step on the road to recovery from the disaster that befell Qaraqosh when IS overran it in 2014."The mass today represents a major hope for the final return of all," says Qazwan Bulos Mousa, who attended the service with his wife and three children."We were the first family to return to the town, and now there are around four families, but life is difficult," he says. These difficulties include a lack of basic services, says Father Sharbel Aisso, who led the mass on Sunday."The infrastructure is destroyed, and there is also no water and no electricity," Aisso says. But the priest, who also organised Christmas mass at the church last year, does not hide his joy at being back in Qaraqosh."I entered the town three days after its liberation," he says."When I returned, I felt very, very happy because I saw these churches where I lived all my life in the priesthood."Around 100 people attended the Easter service at the Mar Yohanna church, a significantly smaller number than took part in a Palm Sunday service at another of the town's churches the week before.- A sign of hope -The bell of the Mar Yohanna church is rung by a member of the Nineveh Plain Protection Units, an Assyrian militia that is deployed in Qaraqosh to guard the town."Holding the mass here today is a sign of goodness and hope," says Milad Mansour, an officer in the force. For Mansour, the victory over the jihadists is one of religious as well as military significance."We won a victory that is not only a victory in the war; the true victory is the victory of God over Satan," he says.Qaraqosh, also known as Hamdaniya or Bakhdida, was once one of Iraq's most important Christian towns. The extremists worked to erase any signs of Christianity from Qaraqosh after they overran the town in 2014 as part of a sweeping offensive that saw them seize around a third of Iraq. They smashed icons, toppled church bell towers and systematically chiselled out the crucifixes that once adorned each panel of the outer wall of the Mar Bahnam wa Sara church.House after house was torched or blown up, and the Mary al-Tahira church was defaced with the group's flag and threats. But despite the attack on his town and his faith, Anwar Yusef does not call for a response in kind."This is my first mass in Qaraqosh since my displacement three years ago," Yusef says."But we are here today to confirm that our message is a message of peace, and we do not have anything but love."
