Fearing violence, police begin removing last protesters from Amona outpost-After overnight negotiations to avoid forcible eviction apparently fail, police enter a home and start eyeing synagogue where dozens are barricaded-By Judah Ari Gross and Times of Israel staff February 2, 2017, 10:56 am

After a nightlong standoff with dozens of protesters at the Amona outpost in the West Bank, security forces began forcefully removing them late Thursday morning, as they sought to wrap up the evacuation operation.Several dozen protesters were pulled out of a home where they had holed up during the night, following the evacuation of all of the illegal outposts’ 40 families, many of them being carried out as they showed passive resistance.Several more protesters remained holed up in the outpost synagogue, as police negotiated with them to leave peacefully and avoid a possible violent confrontation with the outpost’s final holdouts.Police say 60 to 100 people may be inside the synagogue, while a protester told The Times of Israel there were more than 100.The negotiations came after a day that saw police evacuate nearly the entire outpost, pulling tearful settlers from homes and battling protesters in low-level clashes. As night came and temperatures dipped to freezing, most protesters either had been forcibly removed from the outpost, left of their own volition or were inside the synagogue and one last mobile home, with only a few milling around.Police said forces were making last efforts to convince the protesters to depart peacefully, but were getting ready to clear the synagogue by force if necessary, setting up a final showdown in the outpost which was the scene of a violent melee during a partial evacuation in 2006.The synagogue is the largest permanent structure in the outpost, and a particularly sensitive site given its religious nature. Protesters barricaded the entrance to the building with wooden planks in an apparent effort to slow the security forces.Wednesday’s day-long evacuation was marked by only scattered scuffles and some throwing of bricks and other materials as most protesters and settlers showed only passive resistance, but police raised fears the final evacuations could take a more violent turn. With police surrounding the synagogue Thursday morning, protesters inside threw bottles with liquids at the cops, according to the Ynet news website. It was not clear what liquid was thrown, but a day earlier several officers needed to be treated after having bleach thrown at them.“Whoever is still around is the hard core of lawbreakers who came to create a provocation, and we are preparing to evacuate the synagogue and the home next door,” police spokesperson Meirav Lapidot told the news site Thursday morning.Police said Thursday they had removed by force some 800 protesters from the hilltop enclave, as they neared the end of the operations.Twenty-four police personnel were taken to the hospital with light injuries, mostly from the fighting, but some from hypothermia. Several protesters were also hurt and taken to Jerusalem for medical care.Thirteen people were arrested for disturbing the peace and obstructing police work, police said.A police source told Ynet that they wanted the protesters to file out voluntarily “to prevent forcible evacuation and to preserve the holiness of the place. We hope that these efforts will bear fruit and that the evacuation ends peacefully.”Videos taken inside at least one home and the synagogue showed police looking on as protesters, some of them chained to furniture, prayed and pleaded to be allowed to stay.In one, a weeping community leader compares the court-ordered eviction of residents to the biblical story of the sacrifice of Isaac. There was “great blasphemy” in turning children out of their beds and forcing people to give up their life’s work, he said.Another video shows a police officer asking the remaining protesters in a house to leave in a respectable manner that honors their community and sets an example. On Wednesday, two Torah scrolls were seen being removed from the outpost along with a carful of women who had agreed to leave. The women were part of about a dozen families who chose not to resist the eviction notice during the afternoon. However, a police officer remarked that while they were leaving without force, “at this point, no one is leaving here willingly.”The rabbi of the outpost, Yair Frank, told Army Radio that he had spent the night at the outpost after being allowed to briefly return to his home. However, no other settlers were seen attempting to return to their former homes, deemed built on private Palestinian land and ordered by Israel’s High Court to be razed by February 8.Frank called for nonviolent resistance to continue, comparing the eviction operation to a woman being raped.“One needs to express this protest, like a raped woman needs to cry out,” he said, repeating a comparison made a day earlier by MK Betzalel Smotrich (Jewish Home). All the homes in the outpost but one were cleared as of midnight on Wednesday.By the next morning, crews were seen entering the outpost to pack up belongings left behind by the settlers ahead of the eventual razing of the homes and other buildings. The evacuation began Wednesday as unarmed police in blue sweatshirts and black baseball caps made their way up the hill around midday. On the hilltop, home to some 40 families, hundreds of nationalist youths erected makeshift barricades out of smashed tiles, rusty metal bars and large rocks, as well as burning tires and furniture, to slow their advance.Protesters hurled stones, bottles and bleach at police and most others resisting the eviction order only passively. However, emotions ran sky-high, with protesters and evacuees yelling at officers or pleading with them to refuse the orders. One border police officer at the scene said he would not take part in the evacuation. He was led away by a colleague as protesters ran alongside, praising him.“This is a dark day for us, for Zionism, for the state and for the great vision of the Jewish people returning to its homeland,” Avichay Boaron, a spokesman for Amona, told Channel 2 TV.About 3,000 security personnel were deployed to the operation; about 1,000 people — residents and their supporters — were estimated to be at Amona when the evictions began.Police said Wednesday they planned to work through the night to clear out the remaining homes and protesters.“There’s no deadline for the evacuation. It’ll end when it needs to end. We don’t want to go into time pressures,” police spokesperson Meirav Lapidot told Channel 2 news.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Wednesday night that he had ordered the creation of a new settlement to replace Amona, the first official new Israeli community in the West Bank in some 25 years. The announcement came hours after the High Court shot down an agreement for most of the settlers to move to an adjacent plot of land, after the land’s owner came forward. The deal, struck last month, staved off an earlier evacuation that had also threatened to be met by violence. As the army began to prep for the evacuation operation Tuesday night, protest organizers had told supporters to make their job as difficult and long as possible, and that message was apparently taken to heart.Hundreds of protesters, most of them religious teenage boys but also a number of right-wing lawmakers who had flocked to the outpost ahead of the evacuation, locked themselves inside houses and sheds. At one home, several dozen young residents and supporters linked arms, sat on the floor and sang songs, including the national anthem, when police came to remove them.On Tuesday residents were given eviction notices, warning them to be out of their homes within 48 hours. The order allowed residents to file a new appeal to the IDF for a further 48-hour extension. Nevertheless, police began the evacuations a day later. After over a decade of delays and legal wrangling, the High Court ruled in December 2014 that Amona, which lies east of Ramallah, was built on private Palestinian land and must be demolished. Nine homes in the adjacent Ofra settlement were also due to be demolished.Residents of the neighboring Ofra settlement announced that Thursday would be a “public fast day.”The fast — a Jewish sign of mourning — is being called “over the destruction of houses and communities in the Land of Israel, a merciless and unjust [High Court] ruling, and the wantonness of elected officials.”The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Amona nearly cleared, police plead with last protesters to leave without a fight-After night sees last homes evacuated, guards hope to avoid showdown with dozens barricaded inside synagogue, but say they are ready to clear out building by force if necessary-By Judah Ari Gross and Times of Israel staff February 2, 2017, 7:37 am

AMONA, West Bank — Dozens of protesters remained barricaded inside a synagogue and a mobile home in the outpost of Amona as day broke over the mostly cleared-out hilltop Thursday morning, with police hoping to convince the last holdouts to leave peacefully. The negotiations came after a day that saw police evacuate nearly the entire outpost, pulling tearful settlers from homes and battling protesters in low-level clashes. 11 years after stormy battle, lens captures milder Amona evacuation-Photographer behind Pulitzer-winning photo of protests at outpost in 2006 says Wednesday’s operation was marked by calmer tone from protesters and police-By AP February 2, 2017, 8:39 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

AMONA, West Bank — Exactly 11 years ago, thousands of Israeli security forces clashed with settlers and their supporters as they tried to demolish nine homes in the illegal Amona outpost in the West Bank. On that day, AP photographer Oded Balilty took a picture of a defiant protester attempting to block Israeli troops that would win him a Pulitzer Prize. On Wednesday, Balilty returned to Amona to document the court-ordered evacuation of the remainder of the illegal outpost, finding a chaotic but less violent scene on the wind-swept hilltop.Balilty said the tensions surrounding each event were different, making for two very distinct outcomes. In 2006, the demolition took place on the heels of Israel’s 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, in which Israel withdrew all 8,000 settlers from the territory. Tensions were high, and deep divisions lingered when the homes in Amona were demolished. That led to violent confrontations between settlers and police in which dozens of people required medical care.“There was real hate of the establishment,” in 2006, Balilty said.Apparently shaped by that bitter experience, the sides were more respectful to one another on Wednesday, he said. For example, police picked up the skullcaps that had fallen off of the heads of the protesters, all young religious activists, as they were being dragged away. The tone of Wednesday’s event resulted in different types of images for Balilty.“A picture with more violence has more of a ‘wow’ effect,” Balilty said. In February 2006, he shot a diverse range of photos of rock throwing, police on horseback and fierce scuffles. On Wednesday, the images were mainly of police dragging away protesters. The coverage was also affected by changes in media and technology. He said far more photographers, cameramen and journalists were on the scene Wednesday than in 2006, making it more difficult to snap a photo without another journalist in the frame. And with a speedy internet connection at his fingertips and a hunger by AP clients for quick access to photos, Balilty said he stopped shooting every hour and a half to file photos. A decade ago, he was able to snap pictures for hours on end and once he took the Pulitzer-winning shot, a colleague jetted back to the office with his SD card to file the photo. But perhaps most strikingly was how much Amona has changed, mushrooming from a remote outpost with dozens of residents into a community of 250 people. Its enlarged size made covering the evacuation more of a challenge because the action was more diffuse, but its expansion also reflected the rapid growth of Israel’s ballooning settlement enterprise. For Amona, that growth ended with Wednesday’s evacuation.

Real cyberthreats lie in our mobile devices – experts-Zimperium founder sets up $1.5m program to fight cybercrime that exploits smartphones-By Shoshanna Solomon February 2, 2017, 11:49 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Itzhak Zuk Avraham, the founder of Zimperium Inc., a mobile cybersecurity company that creates defenses against mobile device intrusions, said he is earmarking $1.5 million for a program to allow researchers, scientists and communication companies to tackle cellphone-related cybercrime. The real threat today, he said, is inside everyone’s pockets: our cellphones. These have continuously active microphones and cameras which are constantly transmitting and always available, but are without adequate protection.“Why aren’t there enough companies providing mobile protection?” he asked rhetorically. “This is a complex market with high entry barriers. Providing protection solutions is a complicated task.”Avraham, who formerly worked in the Israeli army as a security researcher and set up the San Francisco, California-based Zimperium in 2011, spoke on Wednesday at the CyberTech 2017 conference, held for the fourth year in Israel and said to be the second-largest conference and exhibition center of cyber technologies in the world.Cybercriminals are seeing an opportunity to “prey on victims” by attacking mobile devices, and increasing the number and sophistication of threats, McAfee said in its 2016 Mobile Threat Report.“We expect to see this trend continue,” the report said, requiring more diligence and awareness by both the security industry and end users. “We think this will become even more complex as consumers bring connected devices into their homes and use more wearables.”Gil Shwed, the founder and CEO of Israel’s Check Point Software Technologies Ltd., a provider of hardware and software for IT security worldwide with a market value of over $17 billion, said at CyberTech on Tuesday that mobile devices are the “backdoor” to the core infrastructure of companies and are under daily attack. Some 99 percent of organizations still don’t have protections for mobile security. Ninety-six percent of organizations don’t use advanced prevention firewalls and 98% of companies worldwide don’t use cloud security, he said. This is mainly because the managers of companies and organizations have false confidence in their security.“We are under constant attack,” Shwed said. But organizations and institutions are not responding appropriately.Though the world today tends to deal with threats as they arise, the right approach is to build one comprehensive system to identify and block threats.“The correct approach is to develop and build a single, standard cybersecurity system that would handle the various types of threats against the cloud, against mobile devices and against data centers and computer systems,” Shwed said. “The key word is prevention – preventing cyberattacks, and in order to develop systems for preventing cyberattacks, intelligence should be collected regarding the various attackers. The architecture should be developed and various cybersecurity technologies should be integrated into a single system that would be offered to the clients and provide them with effective protection against attacks aimed at the cloud, mobile devices, data centers and computer systems.”

Israel works on ‘digital Iron Dome’ for cyberdefense-Combination of systems aims to put state ‘in a much better place’ against attacks, cybersecurity chief says-By Shoshanna Solomon February 1, 2017, 4:41 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Israel is working toward creating a “digital equivalent of the Iron Dome” to protect its government, public and private institutions from the increasing intensity of cyberattacks, Eviatar Matania, director general of Israel’s National Cyber Directorate, said.Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system has been used in recent years to intercept and destroy rockets launched by Hamas from the Gaza Strip. It has proven highly effective in protecting civilian populations from the rocket threat. The defense shield Israel would like to install to protect its cyberspace “will not just be one system, but a combination of several systems that together will enable us to be in a much better place” vis-a-vis cyberattacks, Matania said Monday at a briefing with reporters at the CyberTech 2017 Conference in Tel Aviv. “In several years, I think we will be in a much different position, with all the systems working together.”Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in 2012 that Israel was developing a “digital Iron Dome” system to protect against daily cyberattacks, noting that it would take time. Some of the systems are already in place, Matania said, like the newly installed Cyber Net, while others are still in the research and development phase, being worked on jointly by government organizations and private industry, he said. The Cyber Net, which Israel is currently piloting, enables Israel’s National CERT (computer emergency response team), based in the southern city of Beersheba, to connect with the cyberdefense teams of both public and private organizations, from all sectors in the economy, to share information about attacks in a bid to avert others.“One of the most important things in cybersecurity is the sharing of information,” Matania said. “This system combines all of the defenders.”The Cyber Net is a first step toward the creation of a digital equivalent of the Iron Dome, he said.Whereas governments is in charge of protecting the country’s borders against threats, and police monitor city streets, at the moment it is up to government institutions and public and private entities to protect themselves from cyberattacks, which are becoming more frequent and greater in intensity.“You need something at a state level,” Matania said. “And this state level becomes the digital equivalent of the Iron Dome. We are currently developing how to do it,” he said.At the end of last year, Yahoo suffered the world’s biggest hack to date, in which the company discovered a 3-year-old security breach that enabled a hacker to compromise more than 1 billion user accounts. In 2015 hackers shut down power in Ukraine. In February 2016 more than $80 million was stolen from Bangladesh’s account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and US intelligence services have blamed Russia for hacking attacks during the 2016 presidential election-campaign.-At any given moment a day, Israel suffers from tens of serious cyberattacks, Matania said. “The equation between attackers and defenders is not balanced,” he said. “It is much easier to attack.”By developing the right systems, processes and structures, Israel and countries globally will be able to regain the balance and become less vulnerable, he said.Israel is also formulating legislation that would enable the national CERT to work with organizations and managers at companies to help them monitor and mitigate attacks when these present a danger to the public or the nation, he said. This would be done to help “prevent attacks to spread. We are building legislation to do this,” he said.

NB Power crews 'energized' by public response, says Gaëtan Thomas-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-February 1, 2017

The morale of NB Power crews remains high on the eighth day of efforts to restore electricity in New Brunswick following an ice storm, says utility president Gaëtan Thomas. On Tuesday, lineman Shane Avery told CBC News that some people in Kent County were taking out their frustrations by yelling at power crews. But at a news conference Wednesday in Lamèque, Thomas countered with accounts of New Brunswickers being appreciative of the efforts of the 380 crews NB Power has on the ground."I just wanted to emphasize today the troops are fine, the morale is up, everybody is working well," he said."Our customers all over the province — from down south right up to the northeast of the province, the Acadian Peninsula — have been magnificent in thanking our workers," Thomas said."They are telling me they appreciate that. That is what energizes them to continue to energize our customers."The number of homes and businesses without electricity was down to about 7,250 as of 3 p.m. Wednesday, with about 6,450 of those in the Acadian Peninsula. Kent County still had almost 600 accounts without power while the number in the Miramichi area had fallen to below 200.At the peak of the outages last Wednesday, more than 130,000 homes and businesses were without electricity.NB Power expected to have power restored to 75 per cent of customers in the Acadian Peninsula by Wednesday night. It also aimed to have 93 per cent of Kent County customers and 98 per cent of those in Miramichi back in service by Wednesday evening."We have set a target for today that our troops are telling us they will meet," Thomas said.-Military help-There were also 234 military personnel helping with the cleanup as of Wednesday morning, including 34 reservists from Caraquet.Capt. Evelyne Lemire with the Canadian Armed Forces, said more soldiers may be deployed in the coming days depending on the needs of the affected communities. On Tuesday, soldiers went into Shippagan, Lamèque, Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphaël, Cap Bateau, Pigeon Hill and Pigeon Beach, and Miscou.Soldiers helped collect debris and going from door to door. They also supplied residents with firewood and water, she said.On Wednesday morning, reservists of the 37th Brigade were expected to arrive in Tracadie to start helping with door-to-door services.Mayor calls for kindness-The mayor of Tracadie, Denis Losier, took to social media on Tuesday asking people to heed the warnings against carbon monoxide poisoning, and to be kinder to volunteers."We have some people who are not very kind to our volunteers and resource people," he said according to a Facebook post."I can understand that people are exhausted, destitute, but we must not forget that our volunteers do what they can with the means and resources available."Losier said carbon monoxide poisoning continues to be a concern.Another couple was recently taken to hospital with severe signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, a condition that had already led to two deaths last week and more than 30 people being hospitalized. But Losier also asked the residents of his town to be kinder to each other and the volunteers helping out at the emergency shelters and warming centres.Town's manager responds to comments-In response to the mayor's comments, the town's general manager, Denis Poirier, told Information Morning Moncton on Wednesday that more people are connected to power every day.About 700 remained without power early that day."We are seeing the end at the light of the tunnel," he said. But he also cautioned that the biggest danger remains carbon monoxide poisoning.Tuesday night was cold, so the town sent people door-knocking to make sure residents are using their generators properly and are not suffering from toxic poisoning."You cannot smell it, you can only have a different feeling," he said. "People get dizzy and they don't know why."That's why we're going door to door making sure that in every neighbourhood that everybody takes care of each other."-Supplies running low-Another concern is the town's dwindling food and water supplies, he said.Supplies are coming in from other municipalities and volunteers are transporting food and water to homes in the community.Concerning the mayors comments that some residents are rude to the volunteers, he said people did not expect the outages to last for eight days."I think the hopes or objectives were a little too high," he said, adding that the volunteers are holding up well.Once electricity is restored, the next challenge will be to clean up, he said."We'll get to that in the next phase, first thing we make sure everybody is safe," he said.

London, Today, 09:30-Eurosceptic MPs were in celebratory mood on Wednesday (1 February). Their vote to trigger Article 50 and formally start the process of leaving the EU marks a line in the sand.Foreign minister Boris Johnson, who led the successful Leave campaign last June, described the vote as “an absolutely momentous thing”. Brexit is now a legal reality. The European Union bill was forced on the government by the Supreme Court ruling on the case brought by London-financier Gina Miller that Theresa May cannot launch divorce proceedings with the EU without the approval of MPs. But it proved to be no more than a temporary annoyance.Triggering Article 50 was backed by 498 to 114 deputies, with the Scottish National Party and 33 Labour rebels forming the bulk of the dissenting votes. The size of the majority was no surprise. With Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn ordering his party’s MPs to accept the referendum result by not blocking the Article 50 bill, the government never had to worry about having the votes. So, what happens next? The government will now publish a long awaited White Paper on Thursday, purportedly to set out its negotiating strategy. The White Paper won’t be heavy on substance - but it doesn’t need to be. In essence, the British position is to get as much single market access as possible while paying as little as possible for the privilege. For the May government, migration control is non-negotiable. There does not appear to be much to actually negotiate. One of the most interesting section of the White Paper will be how it seeks to avert the risk of a cliff edge effect of a hard Brexit. The demand for a transitional arrangement, probably on a sector-by-sector basis, has grown in recent weeks, as it becomes increasingly clear that Britain leaving the EU’s single market and customs union is inevitable. Businesses are now edging away from demanding passporting rights that would allow them to offer their services across the EU.Theresa May will then send a letter to European Council president Donald Tusk informing him of Britain’s intention to invoke Article 50 of the treaty.Former finance minister George Osborne, sacked by May having led the Remain campaign with David Cameron, warned that the divorce would be "bitter" and that neither the UK or EU position would be motivated primarily by economic self-interest.“The government has chosen - and I respect this decision - not to make the economy the priority,” he said. For his part, Ivan Rogers, who resigned as the UK’s EU ambassador in January, warned MPs on the European Scrutiny Committee on Wednesday, that the EU-27 were likely to demand €40 billion to €60 billion in a settlement.-Grey areas-It is unclear whether the Brexit process could, theoretically, still be halted. The UK Parliament’s Exiting the EU committee has demanded a meaningful vote on the negotiations before the whole process is over and in time to send back May’s team with a different negotiating brief. For her part, May has so far conceded that MPs will be given a take it or leave it vote on the final deal. If they reject it, the UK will still leave the EU.Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron, whose party is the only one campaigning to prevent Brexit, has insisted that the UK could still change its mind and remain in the EU “if there is the political will”.A crowdfunded legal challenge in Ireland to determine whether Brexit can be reversed once Article 50 has been triggered has begun.A separate case has also been brought in London to see whether leaving the EU means Britain automatically leaves the European Economic Area (EEA) which allows access to the single market and free movement of goods, capital, services and people. In legal terms, in other words, there are still plenty of grey areas. Hardly surprising since Brexit is - for all parties involved - a leap into the unknown.Wednesday’s vote set the ball rolling - not necessarily on negotiations, since the EU will decide how and when these take place - but towards an end date. The UK is in charge of its destiny, but not on the terms of its departure. If, as appears increasingly likely, the two years fail to deliver a successor trade agreement between the EU and UK, then the treaty is clear that the UK’s 44 year marriage to the EU will still come to an end.Benjamin Fox, a former reporter for EUobserver, is a consultant with Sovereign Strategy, a London-based PR firm, and a freelance writer.

Surrey RCMP say they made a significant drug bust last month seizing more than 5,000 doses of suspected fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, crack cocaine and cash.Search warrants were executed at two locations along 127 Street after an investigation into drug traffickers who police believe were selling in the 135A Street area of the Whalley neighbourhood."Surrey has had the second highest number of overdose deaths in B.C.," said Inspector Shawna Baher. An unidentified 30-year-old man has also been arrested.Stopa, who was featured in recent CBC stories about life on the Whalley strip, was found to be in possession of 300 doses of suspected heroin/fentanyl at the time of her arrest.Surrey RCMP Sgt. Alanna Dunlop says the drugs seized will be tested to confirm the presence of fentanyl.

Iran tested nuclear-capable cruise missile: German newspaper-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-February 2, 2017

BERLIN (Reuters) - Iran has tested a cruise missile called "Sumar" that is capable of carrying nuclear weapons in addition to test-firing a medium-range ballistic missile on Sunday, German newspaper Die Welt reported Thursday, citing unspecified intelligence sources. No comment was immediately available from Germany's BND foreign intelligence agency or from Iranian authorities. The newspaper said the Sumar cruise missile was built in Iran and traveled around 600 km in its first known successful test. The missile is believed to be capable of carrying nuclear weapons and may have a range of 2,000 to 3,000 km, the paper said, citing intelligence sources.Cruise missiles are harder to counter than ballistic missiles since they fly at lower altitudes and can evade enemy radar, confounding missile defense missiles and hitting targets deep inside an opponent's territory. But the biggest advantage from Iran's point of view, a security expert told Die Welt, was that cruise missiles are not mentioned in any United Nations resolutions that ban work on ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons.International sanctions on Tehran were lifted in January last year under a nuclear deal brokered in 2015 by Britain, France, Germany, China, Russia and the United States.Under the nuclear deal Iran agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for lifting of most sanctions. According to a 2015 U.N. resolution endorsing the deal, Iran is still called upon to refrain from work on ballistic missiles designed to deliver nuclear weapons for up to eight years.News of Iran's reported cruise missile test came hours after Washington said it was putting Iran "on notice" for its ballistic missile test and signaled that it could impose new sanctions.Iran confirmed on Wednesday that it had test-fired a new ballistic missile, but said the test did not breach the Islamic Republic's nuclear agreement with world powers or a U.N. Security Council resolution endorsing the pact.(Writing by Andrea Shalal, Addirional reporting by Parisa Hafezi in Ankara; editing by Ralph Boulton)

Iran says recent ballistic missile test was successful: Tasnim news agency-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-February 2, 2017

ANKARA (Reuters) - Iran said on Thursday it had successfully test-fired a ballistic missile that the United States said had exploded early, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported."The missile test on Sunday was successful ... the test was not a violation of a nuclear deal with world powers or any U.N. resolution," Defence Minister Hossein Dehghan told Tasnim.(Writing by Parisa Hafezi; Editing by Louise Ireland)

US puts Iran 'on notice' after missile test, won't elaborate-[Associated Press]-VIVIAN SALAMA and JOSH LEDERMAN-YAHOONEWS-February 2, 2017

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House has issued a cryptic warning that the U.S. will act against Iran unless it stops testing ballistic missiles and supporting Houthi rebels in Yemen, but declined to say what retaliatory actions the U.S. would pursue.Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump's national security adviser, forcefully denounced Iran's behavior in his first public remarks since Trump took office. He accused Iran of threatening U.S. allies and spreading instability throughout the Middle East while faulting the Obama administration for doing too little to stop the Islamic Republic."As of today, we are officially putting Iran on notice," Flynn said from the White House podium. On notice for what, Flynn didn't say. Senior Trump administration officials said they were actively considering a "range of options" including economic measures and increased support for Iran's regional adversaries. The officials, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity, declined repeatedly to say whether military action was being considered.Later Wednesday, Trump tweeted: "Iran is rapidly taking over more and more of Iraq even after the U.S. has squandered three trillion dollars there. Obvious long ago!"The warning was an early manifestation of Trump's promise of a tougher American approach to Iran. Yet administration officials emphasized that their allegations were unrelated to Iran's obligations under the Iran nuclear deal that President Barack Obama and world leaders negotiated. Though Flynn noted Trump has criticized that deal, officials declined to say whether Trump planned to follow through on his campaign pledge to renegotiate it."The Obama administration failed to respond adequately to Tehran's malign actions — including weapons transfers, support for terrorism and other violations of international norms," Flynn said. The White House also faulted Iran for backing Houthi rebels in Yemen who on Tuesday claimed a successful missile strike against a warship belonging to a Saudi-led coalition fighting to reinstall Yemen's internationally recognized government. The media arm of the Shiite rebels said the vessel was believed to belong to the Saudi Arabian navy.Administration officials said Iran was providing key support by arming, training and financing the rebels, with a goal of leveraging its relationship with the Houthis to "build a long-term presence in Yemen."The White House said the goal in putting Iran "on notice" was to signal to Tehran that it needed to rethink its behavior. Flynn said Iran specifically violated the U.N.'s ban on "activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology."Iran's Defense Minister Gen. Hossein Dehghan confirmed Wednesday that Iran conducted a missile test, but did not say when the test was carried out or specify the type of missile. He insisted it wasn't a violation of U.N. resolutions. The U.S. said the test was of a medium-range ballistic missile. It ended with a "failed" re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, said a U.S. defense official, who wasn't authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.Reports of the test emerged after Trump signed an executive order last week temporarily suspending immigration from Iran and six other majority-Muslim countries. On one point, the U.S. and Iran agree: The test didn't violate the nuclear deal itself.Ballistic missile testing wasn't explicitly included in the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers. But as part of the final negotiations, Iran agreed to an eight-year extension of a U.N. ban on ballistic missile development. The U.N. Security Council later endorsed the agreement, calling on Iran not to carry out such tests. But Iran has flouted the prohibition regularly in the past year-and-a-half, drawing sanctions from the U.S. but also diplomatic cover from Russia. At America's request, the U.N. Security Council held a session Tuesday to address the missile test. The council referred the matter to its committee on Iran and asked for an investigation.Iran has long boasted of having missiles that can travel 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles), putting much of the Middle East, including Israel, in range. Such capability would also put U.S. bases in the region in danger. Iran says its missiles are key to deterring a U.S. or Israeli attack. In March, Iran test-fired two ballistic missiles. One was emblazoned with the phrase "Israel must be wiped out" in Hebrew, sparking international outcry.___Associated Press writer Jill Colvin contributed to this report.

Merkel visits Turkey with ties frayed over fight against terror, free speech-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-February 2, 2017

ANKARA (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel visits Turkey on Thursday for the first time since July's failed coup, seeking to bolster a relationship frayed by differences over issues from the fight against terrorism to free speech.Merkel is due to hold talks with President Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim during the one-day visit to Ankara, and is also expected to meet members of the main secularist and pro-Kurdish opposition parties, officials said.Turkey's migration deal with Europe, cooperation in the fight against Islamic State in Syria, intelligence sharing and human rights are expected to be on the agenda. But the two NATO allies have been at odds over Turkey's crackdown on dissidents after the failed July 15 coup, as well as Turkey's claims, which Berlin rejects, that Germany is harboring Kurdish and far-leftist militants.A row is also brewing over intelligence gathered by German Tornado fighter jets operating out of the Incirlik air base in southern Turkey.Germany, concerned Turkey could use the high-resolution aerial imagery in its campaign against Kurdish militants, has ruled out giving Ankara unfiltered access to the data.Germany has rejected suggestions it is harboring militants connected to the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has waged a three-decade insurgency in Turkey and is considered a terrorist group by the European Union and United States. But Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Veysi Kaynak told the state-run Anadolu agency on Wednesday that Germany had "given shelter to terrorists even during Turkey's hour of trouble."He said Berlin was also sheltering members of what Ankara calls the "Gulenist Terrorist Organisation" (FETO), the network of U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, which Ankara blames for last July's coup bid. Gulen denies involvement."The most important actors of the coup attempt ... are being hosted in Germany," Kaynak said.German media reported on Saturday that around 40 mostly high-ranking Turkish soldiers who worked at NATO facilities in Germany had requested asylum.Turkey's defense minister has urged Berlin to reject the applications and warned a failure to do so could damage relations. Berlin has said the applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.More than 100,000 people have been sacked or suspended from the police, military, civil service and private sector on suspicion of supporting Gulen since last July's failed coup. Some 40,000 people have been jailed pending trial. The crackdown has worried rights groups and allies including Germany, who fear Erdogan is using the coup attempt as a pretext to curtail dissent. Turkey says the moves are necessary to protect democracy and root out supporters of the failed putsch.(Reporting by Tulay Karadeniz and Gulsen Solaker; Writing by Nick Tattersall; editing by Ralph Boulton)

Mattis criticizes NKorea ahead of talks with Japan, SKorea-[Associated Press]-ROBERT BURNS-YAHOONEWS-February 2, 2017

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — In his first public remarks abroad as U.S. defense secretary, Jim Mattis on Thursday criticized North Korea for provocative acts and said he would consult with South Korean and Japanese officials about whether the current strategy for getting the North to curtail or eliminate its nuclear and missile programs is adequate.Mattis spoke to reporters aboard his military plane en route to Osan air base from Washington. In the brief interview, he said he would be discussing the plan to install a new U.S. missile defense system, called Thaad, in South Korea as a means of deterring the North's ballistic missile threats against South Korean and Japan.North Korea also has said it is nearly ready to test-launch a ballistic missile of intercontinental range, meaning it could theoretically threat the United States."Were it not for the provocative behavior of North Korea, we would have no need for Thaad out here," Mattis said.Alluding to China's objections to having Thaad deployed in South Korea, Mattis said, "Thaad should be a worry to no nation other than North Korea."Mattis held an introductory meeting with Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, who said he looked forward to working with the Trump administration.Mattis said he was delivering a message from Trump."I talked to President Trump and he wanted to make a very clear statement about the priority that we place on this alliance between our two nations, the secretary said. "Our new administration inherits a very strong, trusted relationship between our two countries and it's our commitment to make it even stronger especially in the face of the provocations that you face from North Korea."After a series of meetings in Seoul on Thursday and Friday, Mattis was scheduled to fly to Tokyo for further consultations. In Washington this week, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee held its first policy hearing since Trump took office to discuss North Korea. There were more questions than answers.Last month, Trump fueled speculation of possible U.S. military action to pre-empt North Korea's weapons development. In response to Kim's threat, Trump tweeted, "It won't happen!" But he didn't elaborate how he could be so sure."Does that mean we have drawn a red line?" Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., asked at Tuesday's Senate hearing. Those questions and more will be posed to Mattis when he meets top officials in Seoul on Thursday and Tokyo later in the week, two jittery allies that host nearly 80,000 U.S. troops.During the campaign, Trump complained that defense treaties disadvantaged the U.S. and that he would not rule out abandoning signatories if they refuse to pay more for their defense. He also suggested that South Korea and Japan, which are already within the range of North Korean missiles, might acquire their own nuclear weapons rather than rely on U.S. deterrence.

KABUL — While Afghanistan's Buddhists were carving the giant sandstone statues in Bamiyan in 500 A.D., Buddhists in China were creating martial arts in the Shaolin temple in Henan Province.Fifteen hundred years later, 10 ethnic Hazara women and girls practice the martial arts of Shaolin on a hilltop in the west of Kabul. They are preparing for the day that Afghanistan can send its women's team to the Shaolin world championship in China.Sima Azimi, 20, who is originally from Jaghuri, in central Afghanistan, trains nine students in the martial arts to prepare for Olympic competition, but also to protect themselves on the streets of Kabul, where women are routinely harassed. Azimi remembered an incident in which a thief tried to snatch her purse, but with her martial arts skills she fought back and saved it.Raihana Amiri, also 20, hopes to participate in international Shaolin competitions and bring honour and pride to Afghanistan, which is battered by decades of war. When they aren't training on the snow-covered hills that surround Kabul, Azimi trains her students in a grungy, dark club financed by a young cinema actor. Azimi said it was difficult to find all the tools needed to train. For instance, she had to order a Shaolin sword from Iran, where she had studied the art for three years. They could not find Shaolin uniforms, but, undeterred, they designed and ordered uniforms made by a Kabul tailor. While studying in Iran, Azimi competed in two competitions where she won gold and bronze medals. A year after returning to Afghanistan, she decided to train young girls who lived in the Hazara-dominated neighbourhoods of the capital. Most of her students are teenagers, while a few of the older students study in universities. Azimi charges between $2 and $5 a month depending on what they can afford."Some of my students' families had problems accepting their girls studying Wushu (martial arts)," she said. "But I went to their home and talked to their parents."In religiously conservative Afghanistan, girls are often discouraged from aggressive sports. Many parents fear a sporting accident could result in a girl breaking her hymen before marriage, which is considered deeply shameful. While strides have been made for women in Afghanistan, Azimi said there's still much to change. She firmly believes that girls and women can stand toe-to-toe with boys in Shaolin martial arts. In an Olympic Committee competition in Kabul, Azimi took first position among female Shaolin participants.Massoud Hossaini, The Associated Press.

Syrian opposition figure to deploy all-Arab force in Raqqa offensive-[Reuters]-By Mahmoud Mourad-YAHOONEWS-February 1, 2017

CAIRO (Reuters) - A Syrian opposition figure who says he controls 3,000 Arab fighters has told Reuters they are training with U.S.-led coalition forces in preparation to help drive Islamic State from its de facto capital in the city of Raqqa.Ahmad Jarba commands the Syrian Elite Forces, described by the U.S. military as a significant component of the coalition assembled against Islamic State. Its involvement in the battle for Raqqa, alongside the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), is welcomed by Washington, which is keen to broaden the political base of the opposition forces in the area."Now we are preparing for the battle of Raqqa," Jarba said in an interview in Cairo. "There is a training program with the coalition forces. We will be ready to enter this battle in force and we are in the process of preparing for it to liberate our lands."The SDF launched an operation in Raqqa province in November aimed ultimately at seizing the northern city from Islamic State. The first two phases captured territory to the north and west of Raqqa and the third will seek to take remaining areas. One decision awaiting U.S. President Donald Trump is whether to directly provide weapons to Kurdish fighters as they push toward Raqqa. Trump has made defeating Islamic State a key aim and ordered his joint chiefs of staff to devise a plan in 30 days to defeat the group.-ARAB CONTINGENT-The United States considers the Kurds allies in Syria but has said the Raqqa operation should be predominantly Arab, the ethnicity of most of its residents. The SDF already includes an Arab contingent, the Syrian Arab Coalition, but recruiting Arab allies has been a priority to ease ethnic concerns locally and in neighboring Turkey.Jarba said he had struck a deal with the U.S.-led coalition in December to deploy his all-Arab force in the fight for Raqqa."In the last two months there have been meetings with senior officials of the American army and the international coalition forces against terrorism," he said.Colonel John Dorrian, spokesman for the U.S.-led Operation Inherent Resolve, described Jarba's men in December as a "notable" force, and said the Syrian was an influential player in the region. The SDF also confirmed in December that Jarba's forces would be joining it from the second phase of the attack on Raqqa.-'FEUD WITH TERRORISTS'-Jarba enjoys strong ties with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and commands what he says is a force of 3,000, currently deployed between Deir al-Zor to the east, Raqqa to the north and Hasaka in the northeastern corner of Syria. He aims to attract new recruits among locals who helped expel President Bashar al-Assad's army from northeastern Syria in 2011-12 before losing ground to Islamic State, which swept through the area in 2014."There is a feud between us and this terrorist organization," said Jarba, who hails from northeastern Syria. He welcomed Trump's move to heal differences with Russia, a key Assad ally whose military support has swung the six-year civil war in favor of the government."What we are hoping for is that there will be a American-Russian agreement, because the differences between America and Russia are what have harmed us as Syrians," he said.Jarba said he would likely visit the United States in the coming months and may also travel to Russia.(Writing by Lin Noueihed; Editing by Mark Trevelyan)

Iceland, an unexpected Arctic asylum for Syrian refugees-[AFP]-Jérémie RICHARD-YAHOONEWS-February 2, 2017

Reykjavik (AFP) - The wind blows in icy gusts and the rain gently melts the snow: welcome to Iceland! Far from their hometown Damascus, Joumaa and his family don't mind the Arctic cold, they're just happy to be living in safety. With 330,000 inhabitants surrounded by volcanoes, glaciers and geysers, Iceland is an unusual destination for refugees fleeing war in Syria. But since 2015, 118 Syrians have found hope for a new and tranquil life in the Nordic nation. Many of them lived in Lebanon for several years before coming to the land of ice and fire, sent by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).Most of them have settled in the capital Reykjavik and its surroundings, while others are beginning their new lives in Akureyri in the north of the country, 70 kilometres (45 miles) south of the Arctic Circle.Akureyri is where Joumaa Naser, his wife and their five children now call home. The state finances their rent for one year and pays them an allowance for daily expenses. The Red Cross meanwhile finances Icelandic language classes and cultural courses.Speaking Icelandic is the main obstacle for Joumaa, sporting a finely trimmed moustache and bundled up in a down jacket, his words translated by an interpreter.Does the harsh Nordic climate bother him? Not so much."We're able to adapt to any conditions here, whether they're easy or difficult, we can live with them," he tells AFP."It's only the language that is a bit complicated. We need time to become fully adapted," he adds.- Friends and football -But Joumaa's children, including his son Amjad, are picking up the language faster.Making friends and playing local sports like football have helped them adapt to their new homeland."I like Iceland because it's very nice and there are very nice people. Here we like the snow because in Syria, maybe you'll see the snow but maybe not," Amjad says with a laugh as he throws himself down to make a snow angel. On the other side of the North Atlantic island, in a residential suburb of Reykjavik, live Mustafa and Basma. In their modern and soberly decorated two-room apartment of 50 square metres (538 square feet), located just a stone's throw from the ocean, the couple enjoy their newfound security, far from the chaos of Latakia, the Mediterranean port city in Syria which they fled."They (Icelanders) welcomed us in a very nice way," says 30-year-old Mustafa Akra, thin glasses perched on his nose and a cap on his head.- Child of exile -Mustafa says some people he has met in Iceland are "racist", but fewer than in other countries.Support for the anti-immigration Icelandic National Front, founded in early 2016 when the first Syrian refugees began arriving, remains minimal. The party garnered only 0.2 percent of votes in October's snap election. And according to a survey carried out for Amnesty International in September, more than 85 percent of Icelanders want to take in more refugees."People are shy to advertise their opposition against refugees. It's not a popular view here," says Linda Blondal, the Syrian couple's neighbour who is helping them integrate into Icelandic society. The couple knew little or nothing about their new home before coming."We had never heard of Iceland before arriving here. We barely knew where it was!", explains Basma, who wears a hijab.Mustafa, a strapping man willing to work hard, ended up finding a job. But it wasn't easy -- he speaks neither Icelandic nor English. In Syria he worked as a taxi driver, a car mechanic, a cook, a house painter and an electrician. He now works for Ali Baba, a Middle Eastern restaurant in the centre of Reykjavik. The family is set to grow, as Basma is expected to give birth to their first child, a boy, in the coming weeks."I'm proud that he will be born in Iceland, as safe as possible in a beautiful country," the 28-year-old mum-to-be says.Iceland registered 791 asylum applications last year, mostly from Balkan countries.Only 100 have been granted refugee status, including 25 Iraqis, 17 Syrians and 14 Iranians.A year ago, then-prime minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson welcomed the first six Syrian refugee families at Reykjavik airport. And on Monday, President Gudni Johannesson received another five refugees at his official residence.

Five killed from east Libyan forces in Benghazi battle-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-February 2, 2017

BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - Five East Libyan force soldiers were killed in clashes with Islamist-led rivals holed up on the edge of a recently recaptured district of Benghazi, a military spokesman said.Forces loyal to Khalifa Haftar, head of the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA), have been fighting Islamists and other opponents in Benghazi since 2014. They have secured most of the city, but have suffered heavy casualties as they try to gain control of a final few areas. After capturing an area that they had long besieged in the southwestern district of Ganfouda late last month, they have been fighting to force rival fighters from some half-constructed buildings known as the "12 Blocks".Milad al-Zwai, an LNA spokesman, said late on Wednesday that the "first phase" of securing the buildings had been completed after heavy clashes and air strikes. The LNA still faces armed resistance in two neighborhoods in northern Benghazi, Souq al-Hout and Sabri.(Reporting by Ayman al-Warfalli; editing by Ralph Boulton; Writing by Aidan Lewis)

Minister hints at sending more help for Ukraine amid new of violence-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-February 1, 2017

OTTAWA — Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan says the federal government is concerned about a new outbreak of fighting in Ukraine and is looking at ways to "improve" Canada's military support to the country."I'm looking at the options right now in terms of how we can improve our support, what changes that we need to make," Sajjan said Wednesday."But one thing is for sure, that Canada remains committed to Ukraine."Government forces and Russian-backed rebels have traded heavy fire in eastern Ukraine over the last few days, killing at least 19 people and injuring dozens more. The surge in violence is threatening to overturn a ceasefire in the three-year-old civil war that has been repeatedly broken by both sides, but is still seen as the best chance for peace. It also comes amid uncertainty over U.S. intentions in the region, including whether it will continue to stand with Ukraine given President Donald Trump's comments about mending relations with Russia.Canada first deployed about 200 troops to Ukraine in the summer of 2015 to help train government forces after Russia annexed Crimea and began supporting separatist forces in Ukraine's Donbass region. The mission, which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau toured during a visit to the country in July, has so far resulted in 2,600 Ukrainian troops being trained primarily in the basic soldiering. But the mission is set to expire at the end of March and the Liberal government had been non-committal on an extension despite public appeals from the Ukrainian government.Sajjan's comments, coming a few weeks after the British extended their own training mission, are the strongest indication yet that Canada will maintain, and may even expand, its military presence in Ukraine."I've always said when we send troops, we want to make sure they have a meaningful impact," Sajjan said. "And we are having a meaningful impact in Ukraine."Conservative defence critic James Bezan said he hopes the Liberal government not only extends the current training mission, but expands military support in other ways. That includes providing military equipment to the Ukrainians and satellite imagery, as the previous Conservative government did."At some point in time we have to make a decision that Ukraine needs our help," Bezan said."They're fighting a war against Russian imperialism and if they fail, then it's right on NATO's doorstep. So they definitely need the support and training. They definitely need the support with satellite images. They should at the very least be supplying non-kinetic equipment."Canada's large and influential Ukrainian community has also made it clear that it wants the government continue to provide military assistance to the eastern European country. But there have been misgivings inside the Canadian Forces, with some grumbles the military is being stretched thin as it prepares to send troops to Latvia and Africa while also supporting the mission in Iraq. There are also concerns about ongoing problems with corruption among the Ukrainian military, particularly at the top levels.Sajjan said he was confident, based on defence chief Gen. Jonathan Vance's assessment, that the Canadian Forces is not being overstretched. And while he acknowledged corruption remains an issue, Sajjan said Canada will continue to work with Ukrainian authorities to ensure the problem is addressed."We have to make sure we have the confidence of the population," he said."I'm confident that we'll keep moving in that direction, and we'll also make sure that as we move forward, that we'll help them with any efficiencies that they need as well."Sajjan did not say when a decision would be made on whether to extend the mission, though officials say options have been drawn up by the military and will be presented to cabinet in the coming weeks.Andriy Shevchenko, Ukraine's ambassador to Canada, expressed frustration in an interview last month with how long things were taking."Those people who sit in the Kremlin and plan their other terrible activities in Ukraine, the sooner they learn that the West and Canada is serious about future co-operation, the better it is," he said.— Follow @leeberthiaume on Twitter-Lee Berthiaume, The Canadian Press.

Tories criticize Trudeau over letter to Fox, say the PM has better things to do-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-February 1, 2017

OTTAWA — The Opposition Conservatives are criticizing the Prime Minister's Office for complaining to Fox News about a tweet identifying the suspect in the Quebec City mosque shooting as "Moroccan."In an open letter to Fox News Channel co-president Bill Shine, PMO Communications Director Kate Purchase wrote that Canada is "an open, welcoming country that stands by its citizens."She accused the tweet of "perpetuating fear and division" and dishonouring the memory of the victims of Sunday's mass shooting, in which six people were killed. She asked that it be taken down.Fox News responded by deleting the tweet and saying it regretted the error.Conservative MP and party leadership candidate Lisa Raitt says while she understands frustrations over misinformation being reported, Justin Trudeau should be focused on more important matters."We've got a serious issue in New Brunswick right now with respect to an ice storm," Raitt said, referring to a power outage that has affected thousands of people."We've got jobs leaving the country, we have had a terrible tragedy in Quebec City," she added."So why do you pick fights with the American news media?"But on his way into a Liberal caucus meeting on Wednesday, Trudeau said that asking the news organization for a correction was the right thing to do."It's a question of getting the news right," Trudeau said."I think it's important to emphasize what actually happened in Quebec City and think about lessons we need to learned from it."In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, reports indicated that two people had been arrested and a number of Canadian news organizations also reported the incorrect information, but later retracted the reference to a Moroccan national.Police have only charged one suspect, 27-year-old Alexandre Bissonnette, in connection with the shooting spree.Officials said a second man who was arrested was not involved in the shooting but rather was a witness to the attack.-The Canadian Press.

Kellie Leitch says her supporters aren't racist for backing values test-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-February 1, 2017

Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch says her supporters shouldn't be dismissed as racist for backing her proposal to screen prospective immigrants for "anti-Canadian values," and she won't rescind her policy pledge despite criticism from some after the Quebec mosque shooting. In an interview with CBC News, Leitch said she still believes all prospective immigrants should take part in a one-on-one interview with officials before being admitted."I've been talking about a common-sense policy that talks about interviewing individuals, each and every individual, no matter what their place of origin," she said Tuesday."We have a Canadian identity, and it's grounded in values like hard work, generosity, freedom and tolerance. Those are the values that built our country, and those are the values that I'm talking about."Her resolve to push ahead comes on a day when her constituency office in Collingwood, Ont., was targeted by protesters.A banner with the names of the six victims killed in Sunday's attack was hung from the roof. The banner also said: "Hate puts us all at risk," and "#NotMyMP," with a call for Leitch to resign.Staff at the constituency office called the Ontario Provincial Police early Wednesday soon after arriving for work. The landlord later removed the sign, a spokesman for the campaign told CBC News. The OPP said an investigation is ongoing, adding there was no permanent structural damage done to the building. Her assistant also found coffee strewn over the office's windows and front door, although it is not clear if that came from the same group that hung the banner.Leitch said Wednesday her campaign manager, Nick Kouvalis, has apologized for calling a constitutional expert critical of her policies a "cuck" — short for cuckold — on Twitter, a term that is used online by members of the white supremacist and so-called alt-right movements.-Made a mistake-Far-right activists have used the word to mock people who do not subscribe to their views."He recognizes that he had made a mistake, He has apologized, but individuals on my campaign are getting frustrated, continually, and whether that be my campaign manager, and quite frankly many of my supporters, but also many Canadians don't believe that they are racist because they agree with the policy."The Ontario Conservative MP said she can't control the fact some party members, with extreme views, have been attracted to her campaign.Michael Chong, another Conservative leadership contender, said the mosque attack was the direct result of fear mongering by political leaders pushing an anti-immigrant agenda. In a series of tweets after the attack, Chong said the shooting was a "direct result" of politics that plays to "fears and prejudices."-'Demagogue'-"This mosque attack is no accident: It's a direct result of demagogues and wannabe demagogues playing to fears and prejudices," Chong tweeted.Chong did not mention U.S. President Donald Trump and Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch by name, but Chong's spokesman, Chisholm Pothier, later confirmed that Trump and Leitch were the "demagogue" and "wannabe demagogue" the MP was referring to in his tweets."Proposals to add an additional screen for immigrants based on anti-Canadian values is not a practical solution, and frankly, is playing to fears and prejudices," Chong said later in a Facebook post.Lisa Raitt, who has routinely denounced Leitch since entering the race to replace Stephen Harper as permanent leader late last year, told reporters that her opponent's screening plan is simply "fanning a flame" and risks hurting the party's chances in the next election."My concern about what Kellie says is it's not going to allow us to have a really strong showing in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area), which is really made up of so many different cultures ... it's not a path that we can go down."Leitch said she was not in the business of spreading hate."Michael's comments, I was shocked by. No matter whether we have differences of debate, no what matter the policy item, that is no licence for any individual to commit an act of violence against any other individual. It's simply unacceptable."

For hardline West Bank settlers, Jared Kushner's their man-[Reuters]-By Maayan Lubell-YAHOONEWS-February 1, 2017

BET EL, West Bank (Reuters) - For many in the Israeli settlement of Bet El, deep in the occupied West Bank, Donald Trump's choice of Jared Kushner as his senior adviser on the Middle East is a sign of politics shifting in their favor. They regard Kushner, whose family's charitable foundation has donated tens of thousands of dollars to their settlement, as part of a diplomatic rebalancing after what they view as eight years of anti-Israel bias under the U.S. administration of Barack Obama."He will stand up for our interests. I suppose he will lean in our favor," said Avi Lavi, 46, who has lived in Bet El for more than 40 years. "He'll be fair, as opposed to Obama, whose policy leaned always towards the Arabs."New U.S. President Trump says his son-in-law Kushner, 36, is capable of brokering the "ultimate deal" to deliver peace between Israelis and Palestinians.Roi Margalit, manager of the Bet El Yeshiva, a seminary complex with around 400 students, said Kushner, an Orthodox Jewish father of three, understood the position of Israeli settlers better than previous envoys."At least now we have someone who knows us," the 43-year-old added. "He will now have to study the other side (the Palestinians) and see if there is any common ground."Trump's pick for Israeli ambassador has sparked particular enthusiasm in the community: David Friedman, who chairs the American Friends of Bet El Institutions fundraising group. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Kushner and Friedman.Kushner, a businessman who built his career on real estate and publishing, has said little about his views about one of the world's most intractable conflicts, either during the campaign or since Trump took office. The big question for the Palestinians is whether he can be an impartial actor given his family foundation's past financial ties to Bet El.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been careful to say he looks forward to working with the Trump administration, but others are less optimistic.Wasel Abu Youssef, a senior official at the Palestine Liberation Organisation, the main Palestinian political umbrella body, said Kushner could not be a neutral envoy if he was supportive of Israeli settlements.Hani al-Masri, a political scientist and director of the Palestinian Center for Policy Research and Strategic Studies, said Kushner would be a representative of Israel rather than of the United States."If he attempts to resume negotiations, he will seek to hold them at a lower level than previous negotiations. It will be more biased to the Israeli position in an era where Israel is more extreme."-'NATURAL DEALMAKER'-Palestinians want the West Bank and Gaza Strip for an independent state, with its capital in East Jerusalem.Israel has built about 120 settlements in the West Bank. About 350,000 settlers live there and a further 200,000 in East Jerusalem, among about 2.6 million Palestinians. Most countries consider the settlements illegal and an obstacle to peace as they reduce and fragment the territory Palestinians need for a viable state.Israel disagrees, citing biblical, historical and political connections to the land and security interests.Bet El, a community of 1,300 families perched on a hillside where many believe God promised Jacob the land, has been financed in part by donations from American backers.Among its donors have been the Donald J. Trump Foundation, which gave $10,000 in 2003, and the foundation of Charles and Seryl Kushner, the parents of Jared, which gave $38,000 in 2013, U.S. tax records show. The New York-based American Friends of Bet El Institutions hosts dinners to raise funds for the settlement, which overlooks the Palestinian city Ramallah.Kushner has left it up to his father-in-law to comment on what role he might play."Jared is such a good kid and he'll make a deal with Israel that no one else can," Trump told The Times of London newspaper last month. "He's a natural dealmaker - everyone likes him."Middle East analysts say the settlement donations by Kushner's family foundation are not necessarily deal-breakers.After decades of failed negotiations, the real test is whether he is prepared to rethink the way the Middle East peace process is conducted, said Hugh Lovatt, a fellow of the European Council on Foreign Relations."If he reverts to pushing for a process for the sake of process and diplomatic prestige, then he will prove no more successful than his predecessors," Lovatt told Reuters."If he acquiesces to Israeli territorial demands and gives a green light to more settlement activity, he could even do irreparable damage to the prospects of long-term peace."A key diplomatic factor will be whether the Trump administration commits itself to a two-state solution - Israel and an independent Palestinian state living side-by-side.This remains firmly the goal for the Palestinians and, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israelis. But some of Kushner's supporters in Bet El appear to be heading in a different direction - and the political voice of hardliners could prove a significant obstacle should peace talks resume."The two-state solution is a scam," said Shai Alon, the head of the local council, who describes himself as optimistic about the "Trump era"."It's not going to happen."(Reporting by Maayan Lubell and Luke Baker in Jerusalem, Matt Spetalnick in Washington, Ali Sawafta in Ramallah and Nidal al-Mughrabi in Gaza; Editing by Luke Baker and Pravin Char)

14  And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.
