Adviser says Trump won’t rip up Iran deal, signals he may not move embassy-Appearing to walk back statements made by president-elect and other advisers, Walid Phares says nuclear pact will be ‘renegotiated,’ US mission will only be moved to Jerusalem under ‘consensus,’ brokering Israeli-Palestinian peace deal will be top priority-By Joshua Davidovich and Times of Israel staff November 11, 2016, 3:41 am

A senior adviser to President-elect Donald Trump said the new US leader will “review” the Iran nuclear agreement, but will stop short of ripping up the landmark international pact.Walid Phares, one of Trump’s top foreign policy advisers, also signaled that Trump might not move the US Embassy to Jerusalem immediately and indicated he would make negotiating an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal a priority right off the bat.The comments appeared to represent a break with some comments made by other Trump advisers and the president-elect himself, and highlighted persisting confusion over what the contours of a Trump administration’s foreign policy may look like.Speaking to BBC Radio on Thursday, Phares said the nuclear deal, which Trump has railed against and vowed to dismantle, would instead be renegotiated with Tehran.“Ripping up is maybe a too strong of word, he’s gonna take that agreement, it’s been done before in international context, and then review it,” he said, according to a CNN recording of the interview.“He will take the agreement, review it, send it to Congress, demand from the Iranians to restore a few issues or change a few issues, and there will be a discussion,” Phares added. “It could be a tense discussion but the agreement as is right now — $750 billion to the Iranian regime without receiving much in return and increasing intervention in four countries — that is not going to be accepted by the Trump administration.”During the election campaign, Trump described the nuclear deal as “disastrous” and said it would be his “number one priority” to dismantle it.Yet he also sowed confusion when he said he would demand greater oversight over the deal and enforce it, at a speech to the pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC in March. In that same speech, he also said he would dismantle the deal.“We must enforce the terms of the previous deal to hold Iran totally accountable. And we will enforce it like you’ve never seen a contract enforced before, folks, believe me,” he said then.On Thursday, State Department spokesman Mark Toner warned that nothing was stopping Trump from tearing up the agreement, rebuffing comments from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani that the pact was enshrined by the United Nations Security Council and could therefore not be canceled by one party. The agreement, reached in July 2014 to thwart suspected work toward an atomic weapon, requires Iran to curb its nuclear enrichment activities in exchange for sanctions relief.Israel was and remains the world’s leading critic of the deal, calling it a “historic mistake” and arguing that it falls woefully short of preventing Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons.Toner said if Trump pulls out of the agreement, it could fall apart and lead to Iran restarting work toward a bomb. It’s not clear if Iran, which remains deeply distrustful of the United States and has complained of receiving a raw deal under the nuclear pact, would be open to renegotiating the agreement, the hard-fought result of years of intensive diplomatic activity.-Will move embassy ‘under consensus’-Phares also told the BBC that while Trump was committed to moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, as other presidential candidates have vowed, he would not do so unilaterally.“Many presidents of the United States have committed to do that, and he said as well that he will do that, but he will do it under consensus,” Phares said.Phares did not elaborate on what consensus would be sought for such a move, which would break with decades of precedent and put Washington at odds with nearly all United Nations member states.A number of Israeli politicians, including Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, have seized on Trump’s victory by asking him to make good on his promises to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s undivided capital and move the embassy there, breaking with long-standing US policy to await a final status agreement on the city.During the campaign, Trump called Jerusalem “the eternal capital” of Israel and said he was “100 percent for” moving the embassy there.Earlier Thursday, Trump Israel adviser Jason Dov Greenblatt told Israel’s Army Radio that the president-elect would make good on his promise.“I think if he said it, he’s going to do it,” Greenblatt said. “He is different for Israel than any recent president there has been, and I think he’s a man who keeps his word. He recognizes the historical significance of the Jewish people to Jerusalem, unlike, say, UNESCO.”Congress passed a law in 1995 mandating the move of the embassy to Jerusalem, but allowed the president a waiver. Each president since then has routinely exercised the waiver, citing the national security interests of the United States, despite repeated campaign promises.Phares also indicated efforts for an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal would be a top agenda item for Trump, casting doubt on a claim by Greenblatt that Trump would not necessarily prioritize trying to push the Israelis and Palestinians into peace negotiations.“He is ready and he will immediately move to try and solve the problem between Palestinian and Israelis,” Phares said. “He told me personally that, as the author of ‘The Art of the Deal,’ it’s not going to be impossible for him to broker a deal between the Israelis and Palestinians. At least he’s going to go in that direction and not waste eight years — four years for now — not doing something for the Palestinians and Israelis.”On Wednesday, Greenblatt told The Times of Israel that Trump would only prioritize solving the conflict if that’s what the sides wanted him to do.“He will make it a priority if the Israelis and Palestinians want to make it a priority,” Greenblatt said. “He’s not going to force peace upon them, it will have to come from them.”The gap in signals coming out of Trump’s camp is consistent with frustration some have pointed to in trying to demystify what Trump’s foreign policy will be.In comments published in German weekly Der Spiegel Thursday, Germany Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said it was urgent for the incoming US administration to set out its positions quickly since “very many questions are open” on its foreign policy.Steinmeier said he had spoken several times with former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger about what President-elect Donald Trump’s foreign policies might look like. But Steinmeier said even Kissinger had no insights to offer.“Many have already tried to read a foreign policy doctrine, or at least clear and coherent positions, out of Donald Trump’s comments. Without much success,” Steinmeier said.In Israel, the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported Thursday that Israeli officials were viewing Trump as “a puzzle,” without a clear sense of whether he will match his words with actions or how he will manage ties with Jerusalem.Others close to the Israeli government, though, said the new US president will fall closer in line with their views than the current administration.Tzachi Hanegbi, a minister-without-portfolio who is a close confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said Thursday that the Iran nuclear deal and construction over the Green Line — the two most contentious topics between the Obama administration and Netanyahu — will no longer be a source of tension between Israel and the United States under a Trump presidency.“On both of these issues, our view was much different than Obama’s, while it is likely much more similar to that of Trump,” Hanegbi told Army Radio. The Associated Press contributed to this report

Melania Trump promises Sara Netanyahu ‘wonderful relations between our countries, families’-In phone call publicized by PM, the two wives also discuss ‘challenge of raising children under spotlight that accompanies their fathers’-By Times of Israel staff November 12, 2016, 8:10 pm

Melania Trump told Sara Netanyahu, the wife of Israel’s prime minister, on Saturday that relations between the US and Israel, and between their two families, “will be wonderful,” and that she and President-elect Donald Trump are looking forward to hosting them in the United States “at the first opportunity.”Detailing the conversation in a Facebook post on Saturday night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the evening’s phone conversation between the two wives as “heartfelt and warm.”“Mrs. Trump said that she looks forward to our visit at the first opportunity and that there will be wonderful relations between our countries and our families,” Netanyahu said.He wrote that Melania and Sara also “discussed the great challenge of raising children under the spotlight that accompanies their fathers who were elected as world leaders. Additionally, they discussed the great importance of emphasizing family time as part of their role as mothers in order to enable their children to grow up in a normal way like all their friends.”Sara Netanyahu and Melania Trump could find that they have much in common, as the wives of prominent and often divisive leaders who are themselves figures of controversy. Melania Trump made headlines during the campaign for plagiarizing parts of a speech by First Lady Michelle Obama, for having posed nude in her previous modeling career, and as she defended her husband against allegations relating to his treatment of women.Sara Netanyahu has faced court battles over the treatment of employees, and is at the center of an ongoing row about her professed intervention in her husband’s running of the country. A TV documentary on her controversial role last week prompted a response so bitter and lengthy from Netanyahu as to overshadow the documentary itself and prompt allegations that he was inciting against the media. On Friday, Trump told the Wall Street Journal that he hopes to orchestrate “the ultimate deal” between Israel and the Palestinians that would resolve “the war that never ends.” Days after winning the US presidential election, the Republican victor said that “as a deal maker, I’d like to do… the deal that can’t be made. And do it for humanity’s sake.”The telephone conversation between the two wives came three days after Trump spoke with Netanyahu and invited the Israeli leader to Washington at the “first opportunity.”Trump and Netanyahu, “who have known each other for many years, had a warm, heartfelt conversation,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement on Wednesday.Netanyahu responded by saying that he and his wife Sara were looking forward to meeting Trump and Melania.Earlier on Wednesday, Netanyahu congratulated Trump on his election victory, saying the Republican is “a true friend of the State of Israel.”“We will work together to advance security, stability and peace in our region,” Netanyahu said in a statement.“The bond between the US and Israel is based on shared values, shared interests and a shared future. I am sure that President-elect Trump and I will continue to strengthen the special alliance between Israel and the US and we will bring them to new heights,” he added.Later Wednesday, Netanyahu released a video congratulating Trump.Netanyahu met with both Trump and rival Hillary Clinton in New York in September, but refrained from expressing support for a particular candidate. Following the September meetings, the prime minister said “it doesn’t matter which of them will be elected, US support of Israel will remain strong, our pact will remain strong and will even get stronger in the coming years.”The prime minister’s statement on Wednesday came on the heels of statements expressing a mix of optimism and wariness by Israeli politicians, many of whom joined Netanyahu in stressing the continued strengthening of the US-Israel ties.President Reuven Rivlin congratulated Trump on his victory, which he said demonstrated that the US is the “greatest democracy.”“There are many challenges that lie before you as president — at home and around the world. Israel, your greatest ally, stands by you as your friend and partner in turning those challenges into opportunities,” he said in a statement.

Trump can dismantle Iran deal if he wants, US official says-State Department disputes Iranian contention that pact can’t be nixed, warns Tehran will start building bomb if new president scraps agreement as promised-By AFP November 11, 2016, 1:22 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON — The Iran nuclear deal would fall apart if a US administration walked away from it, as President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to do, the State Department said Thursday.Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani had argued on Wednesday that the deal — which saw world powers lift sanctions on Tehran in return for controls on its nuclear program — has been enshrined in international law.The outgoing US administration is proud of the agreement and has no intention of dropping it, but Trump said several times during his campaign that moving away from it will be a priority once he takes power in January.“Any party — and I’m speaking very hypothetically here, because I don’t want in any way to attempt to hypothesize about what the incoming administration’s going to do — I’m just talking purely about an agreement that any party can walk away from,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.“And that will have profound consequences on the integrity of the agreement.”Toner said that the Iran deal was not a legally binding treaty, but that the current US administration believes it is in Washington’s interest to continue it.Asked whether if the US withdraws support for the deal whether Iran might start building a nuclear weapons program, Toner said: “Yes. That’s the reality of the situation.”“This is why we believe it to be in everyone’s interest, including the world’s interest, that if Iran abides by this agreement, and all the parties abide by the agreement, then we have shut-off Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon,” he said.During the election campaign, Trump described the deal as “disastrous” and said it would be his “number one priority” to dismantle it.But he also seemed to indicate that he would push for stricter oversight under the deal, leading to some confusion over his actual stance.“We must enforce the terms of the previous deal to hold Iran totally accountable. And we will enforce it like you’ve never seen a contract enforced before, folks, believe me,” Trump told the pro-Israel group AIPAC on March 21.On Wednesday, Rouhani said the nuclear deal, brokered between Tehran and six world powers after years of intense diplomatic efforts, could not be dismantled by any one country.“Iran’s understanding in the nuclear deal was that the accord was not concluded with one country or government but was approved by a resolution of the UN Security Council and there is no possibility that it can be changed by a single government.”After the deal came into force in January, Iran reduced by two-thirds the number of its uranium enrichment centrifuges, slashed its uranium stockpile and removed the core of the Arak reactor.Officials in Israel lobbied furiously against the nuclear deal and have argued that it does not keep Iran from being able to build a nuclear weapon, as the US maintains. On Wednesday, the United Nations agency monitoring the pact said Iran had made a small but significant violation of the deal by storing marginally more heavy water than the agreement allows.Heavy water is a concern because it is used to cool reactors that can produce substantial amounts of plutonium. That, in turn, can be applied to making the fissile core of nuclear warheads. The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency said in a confidential report obtained by The Associated Press that Iran had exceeded the heavy water allotment of 130 metric tons (143.3 tons) only slightly — by 100 kilograms (220 pounds.) The report also noted that Iran had served notice it would resolve the issue by exporting 5 metric tons, substantially over the excess amount.Wednesday’s report said the agency verified the overhang on Tuesday, just days after IAEA chief Yukiya Amano “expressed concerns” to top Iranian officials. With both sides closely watching for violations, the breach was sensitive even beyond the technical uses of heavy water, especially since it was the second such breach since implementation of the deal curbing Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.Times of Israel staff and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

Trump aides said to warn Obama against 11th hour ‘new adventures’ on Palestinian issue-Outgoing administration urged to not ‘even think about’ pushing policies in its final weeks that are at odds with those of the president-elect, Politico reports-By Times of Israel staff and AFP November 12, 2016, 8:57 pm

Aides to US president-elect Donald Trump are reportedly warning President Barack Obama not to “even think about” trying to make a new push for progress on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the final weeks of his administration. The outgoing president and his team “shouldn’t go seeking new adventures or pushing through policies that clearly don’t match Trump’s positions,” the Politico website reported an unnamed Trump “national security adviser” as insisting. And that includes “efforts to bring peace to the Israelis and Palestinians — even if those initiatives are symbolic at best,” Politico wrote, noting that Trump “has made it very clear he will support Israel and its preferences.”The Thursday report, which was headlined “Trump team warns Obama not to make major moves on foreign policy,” quoted Obama administration officials wondering about how much influence they could have on the incoming president and his team. “We are asking ourselves: Are we going to be able to have some influence on the transition team or not? There is so much unknown. Nobody really knows these people,” a State Department official was quoted as saying. “I’m not sure I need to feel defensive about what we are working on, but I think it’s important to explain it, and explain options, and to be willing to explore alternatives.”Israeli leaders have frequently expressed concern that Obama, who has clashed repeatedly with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the Palestinian issue, might support a UN resolution or push an initiative of his own that could discomfit the right-wing Israeli governing coalition. In an apparent message to Obama at last Sunday’s cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said he expects the “United States will remain true to its commitment for many years that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be resolved through direct negotiations without pre-conditions, and of course not through decisions by the United Nations of other international bodies.”On the day after Trump’s victory, US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro declined to say whether the shock result increased the likelihood of the outgoing administration backing a Palestine-related resolution at the United Nations Security Council. “The president will, as he has been for many months, look for any way he and we as an administration might be able to advance our goal of making progress toward a two-state solution,” Shapiro said. Currently, “some disturbing trends on the ground” are pulling both Israelis and Palestinians in the opposite direction. “And so, any initiative that [Obama] might consider in these final months in office would be based on that motivation.”On Friday, Trump said he hopes to orchestrate “the ultimate deal” between Israel and the Palestinians that would resolve “the war that never ends.”The president-elect said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that “as a deal maker, I’d like to do… the deal that can’t be made. And do it for humanity’s sake.”Trump’s Friday comments on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict came quick on the heels of a message published in Israel Hayom in which the president-elect hailed the Jewish state as a “beacon of hope to countless people.”“Israel and America share so many of the same values, such as freedom of speech, freedom of worship and the importance of creating opportunities for all citizens to pursue their dreams,” Trump said in the message published by the Israel Hayom newspaper.“Israel is the one true democracy and defender of human rights in the Middle East and a beacon of hope to countless people.”He added that he hoped his administration would play a “significant role in helping the parties to achieve a just, lasting peace,” saying that any deal would have to be directly negotiated between the two sides.France is currently pushing for an international conference to discuss peace in the Middle East, but Israel says any talks should be bilateral ones between the two sides. The Palestinians have called for international involvement, accusing Israel of reneging on past agreements.Netanyahu was among the first leaders Trump spoke to after his election victory.Israeli right-wingers have hailed Trump’s win as an opportunity to consolidate control over the West Bank.Meir Turgeman, chairman of the Jerusalem municipality planning committee, told Israel Radio that it provided a green light to revive suspended permits for Israeli construction in East Jerusalem. He said the municipality intended to authorize thousands of housing units that had been frozen.Education Minister Naftali Bennett, who heads the Jewish Home party, said on Wednesday that the US election result meant the idea of a Palestinian state was over.

Racially-charged incidents persist at US universities after Trump win-University of Oklahoma student temporarily suspended over ‘violent, racist’ chat; police investigating threat against Muslim student in Michigan-By AP November 13, 2016, 12:54 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

PHILADELPHIA — A student at the University of Oklahoma has been temporarily suspended and police are investigating a threat against a Muslim student near the University of Michigan amid racially charged outbursts at schools and universities across the country following Donald Trump’s presidential election. The Associated Press and other local media outlets identified several reports of racist incidents at schools since Tuesday, including a group chat that the Oklahoma student got involved with aimed at black freshmen at the University of Pennsylvania, Trump’s alma mater. The chat contained “violent, racist and thoroughly disgusting images and messages,” and Penn is “appalled” its students were added to the GroupMe account,” UPenn President Amy Gutmann said. Gutmann said UPenn police have been working with the FBI. She earlier said officials had increased campus safety and were “reaching out to support the affected students.”University of Oklahoma President David Boren in a statement said the student has been temporarily suspended as the school investigates further.“It would appear this matter did not originate at the University of Oklahoma, but started elsewhere,” Boren said in a statement. In Ann Arbor, Michigan, police are looking into a report of a man who threatened to set a Muslim student on fire with a lighter if she didn’t remove her hijab on Friday. The incident apparently happened near the University of Michigan campus, according to Ann Arbor police Sgt. Patrick Maguire. He added that the department is “investigating it actively … and soliciting information from anyone who may have witnessed anything.”A crime alert issued by the university said the woman took off her hijab and left the area. Witnesses told police the man was white with an “unkempt appearance” and “intoxicated with slurred speech.”A racial backlash also unfolded after the election of Barack Obama, America’s first black president, in 2008. At the time, police documented alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts were delivered by adults, college students and even children.Anti-Trump protests have happened for several days in cities including Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago and New York.

Sweden neo-Nazis pummeled by fireworks, snowballs at rally-10 counter-demonstrators arrested after clashing with police; 2 people injured-By Agencies November 13, 2016, 3:02 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Swedish police said 10 people were detained as a Swedish right-wing extremist group marched through central Stockholm while counter-demonstrators threw snowballs and fireworks at them.Police spokesman Lars Bystrom said those detained were taken when counter-demonstrators briefly clashed with officers in the capital’s picturesque old city as they tried to reach the rally by the Nordic Resistance Movement.A few hundred people, some with the movement’s green and white flags, walked in crisp, freezing weather.Up to six times as many people staged a counter-demonstration nearby and some eventually broke out to try to block the right-wing group from crossing a bridge on their route. Large police forces, including mounted officers, kept the sides apart. Two people were injured in the clashes between police and the anti-fascists.Spokesman Lars Bystroem told TT news agency that a policeman was hit by a demonstrator, and a second individual was injured in circumstances that were unclear. The NMR, set up in 1997, promotes an openly racist and anti-Semitic doctrine, and press commentators had questioned the wisdom of authorizing Saturday’s rally, given the likelihood of violence.

France’s Le Pen predicts rise of ‘new world’ after Trump win-Leader of nationalist party, eyeing presidency, says French voters will join ‘revolution’ against globalization-By AFP November 13, 2016, 4:27 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

LONDON — Donald Trump’s US election victory heralds the “building of a new world,” France’s far-right leader Marine Le Pen said Sunday in a BBC television interview that sparked immediate criticism in Britain.Le Pen described the Republican’s win as a “victory of the people against the elite” and said she hoped a similar outcome could be achieved in French presidential elections in May.“Clearly, Donald Trump’s victory is an additional stone in the building of a new world, destined to replace the old one,” she told the BBC’s flagship Sunday politics program, “The Andrew Marr Show.”Trump “made possible what had previously been presented as impossible,” she said, predicting that the “global revolution” that resulted in his election, as well as in the vote for Brexit, will also see her elected as president.Hailing the rise of “patriotic movements” in Europe, Le Pen drew parallels between the US vote, Britain’s June 23 decision to leave the European Union, and France’s rejection of the European constitution in 2005.“All the elections are essentially referendums against the unfettered globalization that has been imposed on us… and which today has clearly shown its limits,” she claimed. She said the French election would throw up the choice between a “multi-cultural society… where fundamental Islam is progressing” and an “independent nation, with people able to control their own destiny.”VIDEO Marine Le Pen @BBC : "Donald #Trump a rendu possible ce qui était présenté comme totalement impossible"@realDonaldTrump @MLP_officiel pic.twitter.com/Cp505H7ZLx— lesecret ن 🐬 (@fandetv) November 13, 2016-The interview sparked a backlash on social media as it fell on Remembrance Sunday, marking the contribution of British and Commonwealth forces during the two world wars.“Some people are offended and upset that I have been to interview Marine Le Pen and that we’re showing this interview on Remembrance Sunday,” said Marr, defending the decision to run the piece.“I understand that but… Le Pen could, under some circumstances, become the next French president… I don’t think that the best way to honor the fallen is to fail to report on the next big challenge to western security.”

PA threatens to make US ‘miserable’ if embassy moved to Jerusalem-Envoy to UN says Ramallah will use any diplomatic means at its disposal at world body if Trump fulfills promise to relocate mission from Tel Aviv-By Dov Lieber November 13, 2016, 4:31 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The Palestinian envoy to the United Nations threatened to exact revenge on the US at the world body should President-elect Donald Trump make good on his promise to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.Boasting that the Palestinians have a variety of tools at their disposal at the UN against the United States, Riyad Mansour said he could make the life of US diplomats “miserable” in retaliation for the move.“If they try to attack us by moving the embassy to Jerusalem, which is a violation of Security Council resolutions and a violation of Resolution 181… it means they are showing belligerency against us,” Mansour said at an event sponsored by the Jerusalem Fund Foundation in the US capital Friday.“Maybe I cannot have resolutions in the Security Council” — likely due to a US veto — “but I can make their lives miserable every day by precipitating a veto on my admission as a member state,” he said.“Nobody should blame us for unleashing all of the weapons that we have in the UN to defend ourselves, and we have a lot of weapons in the UN,” Mansour added. While on the campaign trail, Trump and his surrogates said Jerusalem was Israel’s undivided capital and vowed to move the embassy there from Tel Aviv — a promise made by many US presidential candidates but never made good on.Since winning the election, the president-elect has begun to signal a possible walking back of his stances on Israel. On Thursday, a Trump adviser said he would only move the embassy “under consensus,” and the next day Trump himself told the Wall Street Journal he would prioritize solving the Israeli Palestinian conflict, defying predictions that he would take a more hands-off approach than the current administration.Mansour also cast doubt on whether Trump would follow through with the measure, noting that other US presidential candidates had in the past promised to move the US embassy to Jerusalem but did not follow through.“What you do when you are campaigning is one thing, but when you have to deal with the legal thing it is something else,” he said.Congress passed a law in 1995 mandating the move of the embassy to Jerusalem, but allowed the president a waiver. Each president since then has routinely exercised the waiver, citing the national security interests of the United States, despite repeated campaign promises.Referring to measures against Israel in the UN that the Palestinians have reportedly held back at US President Barack Obama’s urging in order to keep a negotiated solution viable, Mansour indicated Ramallah would take a more hard-line approach.“You show belligerency against me, then I will do all the things that I can. I can have emergency meetings in the Security Council, I can reopen the whole Pandora’s box of the ruling of the International Court of Justice over the wall,” he said, referring to Israel’s security barrier.Mansour argued that he was working via legal means while the next US administration would be breaking international law by acting against a number of UN Security Council resolutions that declared Israel’s annexation of the East Jerusalem illegal. In November, Trump told Netanyahu that if elected, “a Trump administration would finally accept the longstanding Congressional mandate to recognize Jerusalem as the undivided capital of the State of Israel.”During the campaign, Trump called Jerusalem “the eternal capital” of Israel and said he was “100 percent for” moving the embassy there.A number of Israeli politicians, including Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, have seized on Trump’s victory by asking him to fulfill his pledges, which would break with longstanding US policy of awaiting a final status agreement on the city. However, Walid Phares, one of Trump’s top foreign policy advisers, signaled on Thursday that Trump might not move the US Embassy to Jerusalem immediately.Phares told the BBC that while Trump was committed to moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, as other presidential candidates have vowed, he would not do so unilaterally.“Many presidents of the United States have committed to do that, and he said as well that he will do that, but he will do it under consensus,” Phares said.Phares did not elaborate on what consensus would be sought for such a move, which would break with decades of precedent and put Washington at odds with nearly all United Nations member states.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he supports a bill to bar mosques from using loudspeaker systems for the Muslim call to prayer, and pointed to similar restrictions in European and even some Muslim countries as justification for the move. The prayer calls, traditionally announced through minarets five times a day and often amplified with loudspeakers, have been a frequent target of right-wing ire, with some claiming they are an unnecessarily loud nuisance that echoes in Jewish towns and neighborhoods.Arab lawmakers attacked the proposal as a hate-fueled assault on Muslim freedom of religion.Speaking ahead of a vote on the bill in the Ministerial Committee for Legislation, the prime minister said that the blared prayer calls are a public nuisance that cuts across all religious denominations.“The Muslims, the Jews, and the Christian are all suffering from this,” he said. “I can’t tell you how many times people have approached me, from all walks of Israeli society, who are crying out about the suffering that is caused by excessive noise reaching them from prayer house announcements.”Legislative efforts to stymie the calls have always failed to garner large-scale support, though, and it’s unclear whether this newest bid will find more backing. The bill, penned by Jewish Home MK Moti Yogev, was set to be voted on by the committee in March but was removed from agenda hours before the scheduled meeting.“Israel is a country that respects freedom of religion for all,” Netanyahu continued. “Israel is committed to protect anyone who suffers from the excessively loud calls. That is the custom in many European cities. That is the custom also in various places in the Muslim world, where they limited the volume of the calls out of consideration for the general public.”Supporters of the bill say freedom of religion should take a backseat to quality of life in this case.Joint (Arab) List leader MK Aymen Odeh slammed the legislation, calling it “another bill, in a series of populist bills, whose objective is to create an atmosphere of hate and incitement against the Arab population.“There are noise laws and regulations that also apply to mosques, so it’s clear that the sole purpose of the bill is to mark the mosques as a problem source. It is a clear attack on Muslim freedom of religion and the continuation of a wave of persecution that the prime minister is leading.”His fellow party lawmaker Hanin Zoabi suggested that those who are bothered by the calls to prayer should find somewhere else to live.“Those who suffer from the sounds of the muezzins are specifically those who chose to settle near the the mosques, and… they are invited to leave if they are suffering so much,” she said. “This isn’t Europe here. Anyone who feels like he is in Europe, and thinks this is Europe, should consider going there.”Likud MKs Miki Zohar and Nurit Koren, Jewish Home MKs Bezalel Smotrich and Shuli Muallem-Refaeli, and Kulanu MK Merav Ben-Ari have also endorsed the legislation. The bill would aim to prevent both loud calls to prayer and “conveying religious or nationalist messages, or even words of incitement,” and seeks to ban sound systems at all houses of prayer in the country, not just mosques.“Hundreds of thousands of Israeli citizens — in the Galilee, Negev, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv-Jaffa and other places in central Israel — suffer regularly and daily from the noise caused by the call of the muezzin from mosques,” reads the proposed legislation.“The noise made by these public calls disturbs the rest of the citizens several times a day, including in the early mornings and at nighttime,” it says. Some 20 percent of Israel’s population are Arab, most of them Muslim, making the calls to prayer a familiar sound in many parts of the country. The issue of muezzin loudspeakers have been a source of friction in areas where Jews and Arabs live in close quarters. In 2014, the Yisrael Beytenu party revived a proposal that would ban electronic amplification of the calls to prayer.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

At memorial, Netanyahu compares own peace efforts to Rabin’s-Prime minister says slain leader who signed landmark Oslo Accords ‘strove for peace’ yet ‘never took his eyes off the dangers we face’; hails ties with Trump-By Tamar Pileggi November 13, 2016, 6:04 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday hailed the legacy of slain prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, and likened the landmark 1995 peace deal Rabin brokered with the Palestinians to his own government’s efforts to renew deadlocked peace talks.Addressing the state memorial marking the 21st Hebrew anniversary of Rabin’s murder, Netanyahu noticeably avoided the partisan, political controversy surrounding the 1995 assassination, including claims his own rhetoric led to the murder, and instead focused the bulk of his remarks on the late prime minister’s “fierce” pursuit of peace and the global threat of Islamic extremism.“Rabin strove for peace, but he also recognized the unwillingness of many Palestinians to make peace,” Netanyahu said, adding that the late prime minister “never for a moment took his eyes off the dangers we face.”“He understood early on that security was the cornerstone of our existence, and often spoke of the threat of radical Islam faced by Israel and the rest of the free world,” Netanyahu said. “Today we still face that same threat, but it is even greater now than during Rabin’s time.”Despite these regional threats, Netanyahu said Rabin “fiercely” continued to extend his hand in peace.“I have also extended my hand in peace, but time after time the Palestinians refuse to engage in peace talks or recognize a Jewish state within any borders,” he said.During the speech, Rabin’s daughter Dalia Rabin could be seen openly rolling her eyes. The 1995 Oslo Accords, signed by Rabin’s government and seen as a major steppingstone toward an eventual peace deal, created the Palestinian Authority, for the first time giving the Palestinians autonomy and creating a pathway toward eventual statehood. The groundbreaking agreement was seen as dangerous by the Israeli right, including Netanyahu, and Rabin eventually paid with his life when far-right extremist Yigal Amir shot and killed him at a peace rally in Tel Aviv on November 4, 1995.During Netanyahu’s last seven years in office, at least two attempts at peace talks have fallen apart without an agreement, though the Israeli leader maintains he is open and willing to engage in talks without preconditions. However, many critics see his right-wing dominated government as an impediment to peace talks and view Netanyahu as not only the polar opposite of Rabin, but partially responsible for his murder. After Rabin’s murder, some castigated Netanyahu and other right-wing leaders for contributing to the incendiary political climate that led to the assassination. In the weeks before his assassination, Netanyahu and other senior Likud members attended a right-wing political rally in Jerusalem where protesters branded Rabin a “traitor,” “murderer” and “Nazi” for signing a peace agreement with the Palestinians earlier that year.Critics say Netanyahu — who can be seen in photographs standing on a balcony above Zion Square as the protesters carried a black-draped coffin bearing Rabin’s name through the crowds — ignored inflammatory rhetoric that incited to Rabin’s murder. On Saturday, Netanyahu rebuffed allegations that he contributed to the anti-Rabin incitement in a video posted to his Facebook page.In the post, Netanyahu denounced the “shocking political assassination” of his former political rival, and said he was the victim of “attempts to distort the historical truth and attribute the incitement that preceded his murder.”Last week, Netanyahu came under fire from left-wing and centrist lawmakers after he failed to condemn a claim by fellow Likud MK and coalition chairman David Bitan that Rabin’s assassination was “not political.”At the memorial event, the prime minister said Rabin’s legacy must focus on his lifetime of accomplishments for Israel, and not just on his murder.“I am concerned about that the story of Yitzhak’s life will always stand the under the shadow of its tragic final moments,” Netanyahu said. “But that’s not the whole story. Every boy and girl, even those born after his death, need to know of all of the accomplishments of Yitzhak Rabin.”“The scar that remains from the murder of Yitzhak Rabin will remain for generations, and will not be erased,” he said. “It is an event that is etched in the hearts of our people.”At a later memorial event at the Knesset, Netanyahu spoke of Rabin’s role in forging strong ties with the US, which he said would continue under Donald Trump after he takes office as the next US president.“I thank President Obama and look toward the future,” he said. “Donald Trump is a true friend of Israel. I look forward to visiting Washington and working together with him to strengthen both countries.”

Chaos as millions in India crowd banks to exchange currency-[The Canadian Press]-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

NEW DELHI — Long lines have grown longer, scuffles have broken out and chaotic scenes are being seen across India as millions of people wait to change old currency notes that have become worthless after the government demonetized high-value bills.Angry scuffles broke out Saturday in New Delhi after ATM machines ran out of bills. Minor stampedes occurred in two places when thousands of people waiting in line surged forward to enter the building.Paramilitary troops posted at banks in some of the most congested areas of the city walked among the crowd urging people to stay calm.Earlier in the week, India's government made a surprise announcement that all 500- and 1,000-rupee notes had no cash value in an effort to tackle corruption and tax evasion. The Associated Press

EU delays decision on trade defence By Eric Maurice-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, 11. Nov, 17:56-EU trade ministers postponed an agreement on Friday (11 November) on how to upgrade the bloc's trade defences.Seventeen countries, led by France and Germany, agreed to suspend the lesser duty rule - which keeps tariffs at the lowest possible level - in “some justified cases” to combat dumping, especially in the steel sector. But seven others, led by Sweden and the UK, argued that increasing the level of duties has not proven efficient against dumping and that Europe should not put barriers to trade.Three countries, including Italy, said that they needed more time before taking a position on the plan.Tabled by the Slovak presidency of the EU, the trade agreement is aimed at brokering a compromise between member states, who have been unable to agree on the issue since 2013.EU leaders at their last summit last month said that it should be settled before the end of the year. The compromise between countries that push for an increase of duties and countries opposing it "narrowly defines the situations when LDRs would not be applied," a presidency source said.According to the plan, only "state induced distortions on raw materials and energy" would trigger a suspension of the lesser duty rule.Overcapacity in a sector, such as steel in China, would not be included, despite some countries demanding it.Despite a qualified majority in favour of the plan, ministers sent discussions back to a technical working group, leaving ambassadors to close the deal.Slovak economy minister, Petr Ziga, who chaired the meeting, said he hoped an agreement would be found in the first half of December."I don't understand why the decision was not taken today," a diplomat added, saying "the British were devastated" that a qualified majority supported the plan. But EU sources say that details still need to be clarified on how the EU will suspend the lesser duty rule, before a final decision is taken.Ministers also discussed a new method, presented by the European Commission on Wednesday, to calculate dumping .The method allows the EU to open anti-dumping case against countries where the state has a strong influence in the economy, distorting the market. The measure mainly targeting China and its steel exports.Although the reform of the lesser duty rule and the new methodology are two different measures, Wednesday's proposal will be seen as part of the same package to strengthen EU trade defence and will be taken into account in the decision on duties.-TTIP in the freezer-Trade minister also discussed the future of TTIP, the EU-US trade deal, three days after the election of Donald Trump.Although Ziga said there was no reason to review the European Commission's mandate, trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom noted she had "no idea" of when talks, put on hold due to American administration change, would start again. She noted that Trump "didn't mention TTIP a single time" during his campaign."For quite some time, TTIP will probably be in the freezer. What happens when it's defrosted, we need to wait and see," she told journalists.

EU extends internal border controls By Nikolaj Nielsen-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, 11. Nov, 16:10-EU states backed extending internal border checks for three months in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway, and Sweden. The move was formally approved on Friday (11 November) by the EU council, representing member states. The European Commission had recommended the extension in late October, following demands from the respective capitals over broader fears that refugees and asylum seekers in Italy and Greece may attempt to settle in the countries. The closed border along the Western Balkan route earlier this year and a migrant swap deal with Turkey has seen migratory flows into greater Europe drop. Italy has also imposed stiff border checks along the Brenner Pass with Austria, a major transit route into Germany.Fears prevail, as all five states seek to maintain controls initially imposed in May.Those checks were allowed to remain in place for six months as a response to "a serious threat and to safeguard public policy and internal security."-Facts and figures-But, of the some 3 million people screened by Swedish authorities from June until the end of August only 640 were refused entry.Norway refused only 14 people between May and September.Austria stopped entry of 233 between May and August and Germany over 3,000 from mid-May until the end of July.Denmark said it had refused entry of just over 1,000 people from May until September, out of some 1 million people screened. The frequency of the checks, location, and time varies.Despite the relative low refusal rates, the commission has described the internal border checks as proportionate. All five are part of the Schengen border-free zone, which spans 26 countries throughout Europe. It means Austria will continue to impose checks along its border with Hungary and Germany with Austria.Denmark will carry out land border and ferry port checks with Germany, while Sweden will maintain checks at Oresund bridge with Denmark, and Norway will oversee ferry connections to Denmark, Germany, and Sweden. The commission had previously said such internal controls would be removed before the end of the year to restore "a normally functioning Schengen."But Robert Kalinak, the Slovak interior minister speaking on behalf of his country's EU presidency, now says the controls will be lifted when possible."Although we are not there yet, the situation is improving. The prolongation will, therefore, be for three months only, and there will be more intensive reporting obligations compared to the previous period," he said in a statement.

Germany: Trump victory to spur EU military union By Andrew Rettman-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS and BRATISLAVA, 11. Nov, 09:22-Donald Trump’s victory, as well as Brexit, ought to speed up plans for EU defence integration, Germany has said.“Europe needs common political will for more security policy relevance. The outcome of the election in America could provide an additional impetus”, German defence minister Ursula von der Leyen said in an opinion article in the Rheinische Post, a German newspaper, on Thursday (10 November).“The Brexit decision and the election in the United States have set a new course” for the EU, she added. She said it was “difficult for Germany and Europe, on the day after the election, to assess what to expect from a Trump presidency”.She predicted the US would initially turn inward “to heal the tremendous internal turmoil in the country” that arose from Trump’s divisive campaign. She said EU security would depend on Nato and the US, but Trump’s victory meant that Europe, and Germany as “a great nation in the centre of Europe”, would have to be “more self-reliant on security issues”.Von der Leyen spoke of “building a common security and defence organisation” that would stabilise African and Middle East countries so that fewer refugees came to Europe.“This is one of the central lessons of the refugee crisis. If we do not take care of the problems, then, at some point, we will face the consequences”, she said.Speaking the same day in Brussels, Federica Mogherini, the EU foreign policy chief and a former Italian diplomat, echoed the German minister.“It's starting to be clear to everyone that we can only succeed in providing security to our citizens if we work together as a true union, with the full potential of a superpower, in the field of security and defence”, Mogherini said in a speech at the European Defence Agency (EDA), a branch of the EU foreign service. She said Nato was “the cornerstone of our collective defence”, but the EU should have “strategic autonomy”.She called for the creation of a command HQ for EU military missions, which she described as a smaller version of Shape, Nato’s command centre in Belgium.Europe should make “better use of our rapid response forces, for instance with flexible deployment of battlegroups”, she added.Battlegroups are battalion-sized forces of soldiers from coalitions of EU states. They have existed since 2007, but have never seen military action.Mogherini also said the EDA could coordinate EU defence procurement and R&D to create a military “industrial base”.“Horizon 2020 only covers civilian and dual-use technologies. A continent-wide joint research programme on defence would be a natural extension of Horizon 2020”, she said, referring to Europe’s existing €80 billion science fund.-Trump dinner-EU foreign ministers will discuss Trump’s victory at a special dinner, called by Germany, in Brussels on Sunday.Foreign and defence ministers will also discuss Mogherini's “implementation plan on security and defence” in the EU capital on Monday and Tuesday.Trump, who is to take office on 20 January, has said that he would not defend Nato states which did not pay their fair share on defence and that he might recognise Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. For security experts, such as Mark Galeotti, a US scholar at the Institute of International Relations in Prague, that meant that Baltic states and Ukraine could be left on their own to resist Russia’s “adventurism”.It also meant the risk of a US-Russia confrontation was higher down the line if Russian leader Vladimir Putin tested Trump’s limits.Von der Leyen’s reference to Brexit comes after the June referendum in which the UK voted to leave the EU.Britain was the EU’s top military power and had vowed to block European security cooperation on grounds that it would undermine Nato.-EU army-France, Germany, Italy, and Spain already called for an EU defence union in October in reaction to the Brexit vote.“To be clear: an ‘EU army’ is not our objective,” they said at the time.Italy and Germany do want an EU "army", according to separate Italian proposals, and according to France, however.Italy, in September, called for a “joint permanent European Multinational Force” that would pave the way for “a future European integrated force”.French finance minister Michel Sapin, speaking at the Tatra summit, a conference in Bratislava last month organised by the Globsec think tank, said: “This is something that is very close to the Germans’ heart - they would like to create a European army”.Von der Leyen, in her Rheinische Post article, mentioned Africa and the Middle East, but other German politicians have said EU military integration was also needed to deter Russian aggression.“His [Trump’s] attitude is definitely a threat to the capacity of the West to stand up to an aggressive and nationalist Russia,” Norbert Roettgen, a senior MP in Germany’s ruling CDU party, told the Financial Times, a British newspaper, this week.-Restraint too far-Germany is sending 500 troops to Lithuania in early 2017 as part of a Nato Russia-deterrent force. It is also raising defence spending from €34 billion a year to €39 billion, but is still below Nato’s target of 2% of GDP for allied states.Speaking at a security conference in Munich in 2015, German president Joachim Gauck noted a shift in thinking well before Brexit and Trump. He said Germany should play a more forceful role abroad despite its World War II past.“While there are genuine pacifists in Germany, there are also people who use Germany’s guilt for its past as a shield for laziness or a desire to disengage from the world,” he said.“This [guilt] gives Germany a questionable right to look the other way … Restraint can be taken too far”, he said.

Thousands march in U.S. cities against Trump presidency-[Reuters]-By Alexander Besant and Olga Grigoryants-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Chanting "Not my president" and "love trumps hate," thousands of demonstrators took the streets in cities across the United States on Saturday to protest against President-elect Donald Trump, who they say threatens their civil and human rights. The biggest rallies were in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, where organizers said they wanted to build on the momentum after several nights of protests triggered by the real-estate mogul's surprise win in Tuesday's presidential election. In New York, several thousand protesters marched peacefully up Fifth Avenue past its glitzy store fronts, some already bearing Christmas decorations, before filling the streets at the foot of Trump Tower, the president-elect's skyscraper home."We're horrified the country has elected an incredibly unqualified, misogynist, racist on a platform that was just totally hateful," said Mary Florin-McBride, 62, a retired banker from New York who held a sign reading, "No Fascism in America."There were also demonstrations in Chicago and Los Angeles, where several thousand protesters gathered beneath MacArthur Park's palm trees holding placards including "Dump Trump" and "Minorities Matter," before marching towards downtown. Some of the demonstrators waved American, Mexican and rainbow flags. Holding a "Keep Love Legal" sign, 25-year-old gay Los Angeles resident Alex Seedman called Trump a fascist and feared he would repeal marriage equality.Evelyne Werzola, 46, an immigrant from South Africa, said she had seen what a police state could do."I've seen people oppressed. And this is like a heartbreak of the American dream for me," Werzola said. "So I'm fighting to keep what America has stood for alive."Raising fears of violence around the rallies, one protester in Portland suffered non-life threatening injuries when he was shot early on Saturday as he took part in a march across the Morrison Bridge by a young gunman who fled the scene.Portland police said later that the suspect's car was spotted, a gun was impounded and four people detained. The vehicle's occupants are believed to be criminal gang associates, the police department said in a statement.-PROTESTS LARGELY PEACEFUL-Since Trump's victory, demonstrators in several cities have decried the Republican's campaign promises to restrict immigration and register Muslims, as well as allegations that the former reality-TV star sexually abused women. The demonstrations so far have been largely peaceful, although in Portland protesters smashed store windows, sprayed graffiti and damaged cars late on Friday as they clashed with police who used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds.Dozens of protesters have been arrested and a handful of police injured. The demonstrations since the election have been impromptu affairs, quickly organised by young Americans with a diverse array of backgrounds and agendas.Protesters were at their most numerous and intense in the rallies immediately following the election before getting smaller in scale. Saturday's protests, however, were expected to be bigger due to the weekend. As activists look to the next four years with Trump in the White House and his party controlling both houses of Congress, some are preparing for what they hope will be the nation's most enduring demonstrations since the Occupy Wall Street movement.Trump initially denounced the protests and said they were "incited" by the media, but reversed course on Friday and praised the demonstrators' "passion for our great country.""We will all come together and be proud!" Trump said on Twitter. Many voters were shocked by the result, after opinion polls failed to predict a win for Trump. Some 60.3 million people voted for Trump, fewer than the 60.8 million who cast ballots for Clinton. But Trump's strong showing in swing states, including Michigan, meant he triumphed in the Electoral College that ultimately picks the president. The president-elect's biggest support base was the broad middle of the country, from the Heartland through the Rust Belt, with voters in states that had long supported Democrats choosing Trump after he promised to end corruption in Washington D.C., and bring back jobs by renegotiating international trade deals.(Additional reporting by Jane Ross in Los Angeles and Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee; Writing by Daniel Wallis; Editing by Hugh Lawson, Chizu Nomiyama and Bernard Orr)

Women planning mass march on Washington when Trump takes office-[Reuters]-By Ellen Wulfhorst-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

NEW YORK (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Women anxious that a Donald Trump presidency in the United States could set back or destroy many of their rights are planning a massive march in Washington one day after he is sworn in, organizers said on Friday. On Facebook, where the "Million Women March" is being organised, some 35,000 people said they would attend within the first 24 hours after it was announced, said Bob Bland, an organizer based in New York. The march comes in response to Trump's attitudes towards women that emerged during his campaign against Democrat Hillary Clinton, Bland told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The Republican Trump insulted female reporters, a female political rival and other women over their looks, and a video surfaced in which he could be heard bragging about groping women and making unwanted sexual advances. The video prompted several women to say publicly that Trump had groped them.Trump denied their allegations and dismissed his words as "locker room talk."During the campaign Trump also said abortion should be largely banned, that the U.S. Supreme Court ruling Roe v Wade legalising abortion should be overturned and that he would appoint an anti-abortion justice to the nation's highest court. He said women who had abortions should be punished, but later retracted this, saying that doctors who perform abortions should be punished.Bland said plans for the march kicked off on Thursday, two days after Trump won the U.S. presidential election in a widely unexpected victory."A lot of women got up the second day with the same idea" for a march on Washington, and they coordinated on social media, she said."We need to be working together in a coherent, supportive way over the next four years, to activate more women into leadership positions, to be more politically active," Bland said. "We cannot allow ourselves to give up, put our heads down and not hold this administration accountable for any violation of human rights or women's rights."The march is being organised state by state, said Fontaine Pearson, 54, a coordinator in Memphis, Tennessee."We have a huge groundswell of women," she said. "This is growing faster than anyone expected."The march is planned for Jan. 21, 2017, the day after Trump is to be sworn into office, at Washington, D.C.'s Lincoln Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial was the site of the famed civil rights march in 1963, when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech.(Reporting by Ellen Wulfhorst, Editing by Ros Russell; Please credit the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of Thomson Reuters, that covers humanitarian news, women's rights, trafficking, property rights and climate change. Trump looking at fast ways to quit global climate deal: source-[Reuters]-By Valerie Volcovici and Alister Doyle-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

WASHINGTON/MARRAKESH, Morocco (Reuters) - Donald Trump is seeking quick ways of withdrawing from a global agreement to limit climate change, a source on his transition team said, defying widening international backing for the plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions.Since the U.S. President-elect was chosen, governments ranging from China to small island states have reaffirmed support for the 2015 Paris Agreement at 200-nation climate talks running until Nov. 18 in Marrakesh, Morocco.Trump, who has called global warming a hoax and has promised to quit the Paris Agreement, was considering ways to bypass a theoretical four-year procedure for leaving the accord, according to the source, who works on Trump's transition team for international energy and climate policy."It was reckless for the Paris agreement to enter into force before the election" on Tuesday, the source told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. The Paris Agreement won enough backing for entry into force on Nov. 4.Alternatives were to send a letter withdrawing from a 1992 Convention that is the parent treaty of the Paris Agreement, voiding U.S. involvement in both in a year's time, or to issue a presidential order simply deleting the U.S. signature from the Paris accord, he said. Many nations have expressed hopes the United States will stay. Host Morocco said the agreement that seeks to phase out greenhouse gases in the second half of the century was strong enough to survive a pullout."If one party decides to withdraw that it doesn't call the agreement into question," Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar told a news conference. The agreement was reached by almost 200 nations in December and, as of Saturday, has been formally ratified by 109 representing 76 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, including the United States with 18 percent. The accord seeks to limit rising temperatures that have been linked to increasing economic damage from decertification, extinctions of animals and plants, heat waves, floods and rising sea levels.U.N. climate chief Patricia Espinosa declined to comment on the Trump source's remarks to Reuters."The Paris Agreement carries an enormous amount of weight and credibility," she told a news conference. She said the United Nations hoped for a strong and constructive relationship with Trump. The Trump source blamed U.S. President Barack Obama for joining up by an executive order, without getting approval from the Senate. "There wouldn't be this diplomatic fallout on the broader international agenda if Obama hadn't rushed the adoption," he said.(Reporting by Valerie Volcovici in Washington and Alister Doyle in Morocco; editing by John Stonestreet)

CLINTON BLAMES COMEY AND THE MEDIA FOR HER LOSS. WHEN SHE BOUGHT OFF THE MEDIA FOR HERSELF. AND HER PUPPET OBAMA MADE SURE THE MEDIA WAS CLINTONS CRIMINAL PUPPETS ALSO.

Clinton blames FBI's Comey for her defeat in call with donors-[Reuters]-By Luciana Lopez and Ginger Gibson-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hillary Clinton blamed FBI director James Comey for her stunning defeat in Tuesday's presidential election in a conference call with her top campaign funders on Saturday, according to two participants who were on the call.Clinton was projected by nearly every national public opinion poll as the heavy favourite going into Tuesday's race. Instead, Republican Donald Trump won the election, shocking many throughout the nation and prompting widespread protests.Clinton has kept a low profile since her defeat after delivering her concession speech on Wednesday morning.Clinton told her supporters on Saturday that her team had drafted a memo that looked at the changing opinion polls leading up to the election and that the letter from Comey proved to be a turning point. She said Comey's decision to go public with the renewed examination of her email server had caused an erosion of support in the upper Midwest, according to three people familiar with the call.Clinton lost in Wisconsin, the first time since 1984 that the state favoured the Republican candidate in a presidential election. Although the final result in Michigan has still not been tallied, it is leaning Republican, in a state that last favoured the Republican nominee in 1988.Comey sent a letter to Congress only days before the election announcing that he was reinstating an investigation into whether Clinton mishandled classified information when she used a private email server while secretary of state from 2009 to 2012.Comey announced a week later that he had reviewed emails and continued to believe she should not be prosecuted, but the political damage was already done.Clinton told donors that Trump was able to seize on both of Comey's announcements and use them to attack her, according to two participants on the call. While the second letter cleared her of wrongdoing, Clinton said that it reinforced to Trump's supporters that the system was rigged in her favour and motivated them to mobilise on Election Day.The memo prepared by Clinton's campaign, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, said voters who decided which candidate to support in the last week were more likely to support Trump than Clinton."In the end, late breaking developments in the race proved one hurdle too many for us to overcome," the memo concludes.A spokesperson for the FBI could not immediately be reached for comment. On the phone call, Dennis Chang, who served as Clinton's finance chair, said her campaign and the national party had raised more than $900 million from more than 3 million individual donors, according to the two participants who spoke to Reuters.-TRUMP: 'RESTRAINED' TWITTER PRESENCE-As Clinton gave her account to donors, Trump hunkered down at Trump Tower with members of the transition team announced on Friday and tasked with selecting the 15 Cabinet posts and thousands of political appointment jobs.Kellyanne Conway, who served as his campaign manager, said on Saturday that the an announcement of a new chief of staff is "imminent." Two candidates whose names have surfaced as contenders for the top White House job are campaign CEO Steve Bannon and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus.Trump will deliver a speech about his plans moving forward in the coming days and may undertake a national victory tour, Conway said, without providing further details. He will be sworn in on January 20.The president-elect plans to keep his communication channels open. In an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes" that will air on Sunday, Trump said he isn't ready to give up his Twitter account, where he routinely posted controversial statements during the campaign that unleashed harsh criticism."I'm going to be very restrained, if I use it at all, I'm going to be very restrained," Trump said.(Reporting by Ginger Gibson in Washington and Luciana Lopez in New York; Editing by Leslie Adler and Mary Milliken)

Australia, U.S. announce refugee resettlement deal-[Reuters]-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia has reached a resettlement deal with the United States for refugees being held in Papua New Guinea and Nauru after attempting to reach Australia by boat, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on Sunday.Under Australia's tough border security laws, asylum seekers intercepted trying to reach the country by boat are sent for processing at detention camps on Papua New Guinea's Manus island and the tiny South Pacific island nation of Nauru. Some 1,200 people are currently held in the camps, many of whom have been held for more than three years.“I can now confirm that the Government has reached a further third country resettlement arrangement for refugees presently in the regional processing centres. The agreement is with the United States,” Turnbull told a press conference in Canberra. The agreement, to be administered with the UN High Commission on Refugees, is available only to those currently in the processing centres and will not be repeated.Turnbull would not say exactly how many refugees would be resettled in the United States, but said women, children and families would be prioritized.Detainees who have had applications for refugee status rejected should return to their countries, he said.Australia's offshore detention policy for 'boat people' has drawn widespread condemnation both at home and overseas amid reports of harsh conditions and systemic child abuse. The deal relieves a major headache for Turnbull, whose poll numbers fell to a 14-month low last week, raising speculation of fresh political turbulence in a country that has had four leaders in six years.Abdul Aziz, 24, who has spent more than three years on Manus Island after fleeing his home in Sudan in 2013, was very happy.“All the refugees were smiling and hugging each other. This nightmare is going to end finally, but the main question is when and how and how we get out of here,” he told Reuters.U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters while visiting New Zealand on Sunday: "We in the United States have agreed to consider referrals from UNHCR on refugees now residing in Nauru and in Papua New Guinea.”The election of Donald Trump, who has threatened to ban Muslims from entering the United States and championed anti-immigration policies, has injected uncertainty into the deal. But Turnbull said the "agreement was reached some time ago. There is a great deal of preparation and planning that has gone into it and, indeed, in leading up to this announcement."No timeline was given for the process.Amnesty International last month said as many of 410 men, women and children held on Nauru are being driven to the brink as a result of treatment that amounted to "torture".Papua New Guinea has said it will close the Manus Island center, but the Nauru facility will remain open.Asylum seekers who refuse offers to resettle in a third country or to return home will be offered a 20-year visa to stay on Nauru, but no financial support, Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said.Once rich in phosphate, Nauru has limited economic resources and the Australian-funded detention center provides the tiny island state’s most significant revenue stream.(Reporting by Colin Packham and Harry Pearl in Sydney, Charlotte Greenfield in Wellington; Editing by Dan Grebler)

Colombia, rebels say have agreed revised peace deal-[Reuters]-By Nelson Acosta and Julia Symmes Cobb-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

HAVANA/BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombia's government and Marxist guerillas said on Saturday they agreed on a revised peace deal to end a 52-year war, six weeks after the original was narrowly rejected in a referendum amid objections it was too favorable to the rebels. The government and Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), who have been holding talks in Havana for four years, said in a joint statement they had incorporated proposals from various groups in the new deal."We call upon all Colombia and the international community... to back this new accord and its quick implementation so as to leave the tragedy of war in the past," the statement read. "Peace cannot wait anymore."However, former President Alvaro Uribe, who led opposition to the original accord, said his camp and victims of the conflict, which has killed more than 220,000 and displaced millions, should be able briefly to study the new deal before it is implemented."I have asked the president that the texts they announce in Havana not be definitive," he said in a statement posted on his Twitter account, adding that the opposition might want to make further tweaks.Details of the new deal were to be made public later on Saturday. Colombia's lead government negotiator, Humberto de la Calle, said one main change is a requirement the FARC present a complete inventory of its assets, which are destined for victim compensation. The new accord also takes foreign magistrates off special peace tribunals, although there will be foreign observers, and stipulates the FARC must turn in "exhaustive and detailed" information about its involvement in the drugs trade, de la Calle said.No details were released on whether the deal addresses the main concerns of the Uribe-led opposition, namely guaranteed congressional seats for the FARC and immunity from traditional jail sentences for leaders."This accord is better insofar as it resolves many criticisms and dissatisfactions," de la Calle said. "Like the first one, it will not have unanimous acceptance, but we hope that it will have more solid support."President Juan Manuel Santos, who last month won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end the war, has staked his legacy on a deal and spent the last few weeks scrambling to salvage it.It was unclear if he will put the new accord up for another popular vote. He was to speak later on Saturday.U.S. National Security Advisor Susan Rice said in a statement: "We commend... Santos for forming an inclusive national dialogue to incorporate into this revised agreement concerns of those who voted against the initially proposed peace agreement."(Reporting by Nelson Acosta and Julia Symmes Cobb; Additional reporting by Roberta Rampton in Washington; Writing by Sarah Marsh; Editing by Mary Milliken and Dan Grebler)

Demolitions of Lagos waterfront communities could leave 300,000 homeless - campaigners-[Reuters]-By Paola Totaro and Matthew Ponsford-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - More than 300,000 people face eviction and could be left homeless as prime waterfront land in Nigeria's biggest city, Lagos, is cleared of shanty towns to make way for luxury redevelopment, campaigners said on Friday.State-ordered demolitions and fighting between rival communities this week forced thousands of residents of Otodo Gbame slum to take to boats on the Lagos Lagoon and left an estimated 30,000 residents without shelter.According to the Nigerian Slum and Informal Settlement Federation (NSISF), a network of activists working in Nigerian slum communities, some 300,000 people face eviction, many of whom have lived on the shores of the lake for more than a century.Hundreds of residents spent last night sleeping in wooden canoes on the water with nowhere else to go, Andrew Maki, co-director of Lagos-based legal campaign group Justice and Empowerment Initiatives (JEI) said by phone."With over 30,000 residents of Otodo Gbame already homeless there is presently a humanitarian disaster in Lagos," he said. "It is almost unthinkable to calculate the implications of that number growing tenfold to 300,000. Where would they sleep? Who will feed them?"Speaking by mobile phone, people on boats told Thomson Reuters Foundation they were surviving on food and clean water brought to them by other waterfront communities.London-based Amnesty International on Friday called on Nigeria to shelve plans to demolish more illegal settlements in the megacity of 23 million, and said officials needed to provide alternative accommodation for residents. The Governor of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode, announced the "demolition of all the shanties" around the creeks and waterways of Lagos State on Oct 9, citing public health and safety concerns.Despite a High Court order to stop evictions issued on Nov. 7, more than 40 slum communities who live on Lagos Lagoon now face eviction, said Maki."This forced eviction makes abundantly clear that Governor Ambode's threat to demolish all waterfront communities across Lagos State is very real," he said.A spokeswoman for Lagos police told Reuters on Thursday officers had arrested several people for setting fires but denied claims by JEI that the police had destroyed buildings.-'POOREST OF THE POOR'-Residents of the Otodo Gbame community, primarily fishermen who belong to the linguistic minority, the Egun, used mobile phones to film fires and said police had also used tear gas to drive them towards the water."They are the poorest of the poor... their land is in one of the richest areas of the city. It is wanted for redevelopment and will be walled off," Maki said.JEI said it had interviewed more than two dozen eyewitness who said police set fire to houses to force residents out early on Thursday morning. Bulldozers were filmed pulling down makeshift homes. The Thomson Reuters Foundation was unable to reach the governor's office or Lagos police by phone or email.Maki said bulldozers had arrived at a much smaller community neighbouring Otodo Gbame, known as "Ikate back gate" on Friday morning and residents had been told by police that they had three hours to vacate their homes before demolition began. He said this indicated that the demolition of Otodo Gbame may be part of a broader "slum clearing" effort. In recent years, the area around Otodo Gbame, known as Lekki, has attracted investors who have built waterside apartments and commercial districts, pushing out fishing communities, according to a statement by JEI.The high court order restrained demolition of "any of the applicants' homes, business premises, properties of community facilities in waterfront communities across Lagos State ..."It followed Governor Ambode's statement that the evictions were necessary for "security" reasons - citing a kidnapping from a nearby private school.Ambode identified the shanty-towns as "hideouts" for the suspected kidnappers and the demolitions as necessary for "the safety of our children and all Lagosians".The state's Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, said the demolition formed part of the government's policy of "removal of environmental infractions and nuisances across the state".-"LAW-ABIDING, HARD-WORKING URBAN POOR"-In a statement last month, NSISF rejected the government's characterisation of the waterfront communities as "the abode of miscreants/street-urchins, kidnappers, touts, street traders and hawkers".NSISF said residents are law-abiding, hard-working urban poor, most of whom are fishermen and women engaged in fish smoking and fish selling."We contribute meaningfully to the economy of Lagos; indeed, the urban poor are the engine of the economy. We pay taxes, levies, rates and charges to the local and state governments," it added. The clearing of waterfront slums in Lagos comes just weeks after 193 countries agreed the New Urban Agenda at a U.N. summit in Quito, Ecuador, a policy document that aims to guide the growth of cities in the 21st century as well as enshrine humanitarian rights for the urban poor..By 2050, Nigeria's population is set to more than double to 400 million, making it the world's third most populous nation after China and India, according to U.N. estimates.(Editing by Jo Griffin and Ros Russell; Please credit the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of Thomson Reuters, that covers humanitarian news, women's rights, trafficking, property rights and climate change. Blast at Pakistan shrine kills 52, wounds scores-[Reuters]-By Gul Yousafzai-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - An explosion claimed by militant group Islamic State ripped through a Muslim shrine in southwestern Pakistan on Saturday, killing at least 52 people and wounding scores, officials said. The blast at the Shah Noorani shrine occurred while hundreds of people were inside, local district commissioner Hashim Ghalzai told Reuters.Provincial Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti said 52 people were killed and that more than 105, including many women and children, were wounded."Every day, around sunset, there is a dhamaal (ritual dance) here, and there are large numbers of people who come for this," said Nawaz Ali, the shrine's custodian. The shrine is located in Baluchistan province about 100 km (60 miles) north of the port city of Karachi, to where rescue official Hakeem Nasi told Geo TV dozens of wounded were being moved. The government dispatched 25 ambulances from the nearby town of Hub to the shrine, said Akbar Harifal, provincial home secretary for Baluchistan. The army was called in to assist with rescue operations, given the remoteness of the site, Bugti said.It was not clear whether the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber or a planted device, according to Bugti. The province has seen some of the worst militant attacks this year in Pakistan.Islamic State said in a statement via its Amaq news agency that its fighters had carried out Saturday's bombing. The jihadist group also claimed responsibility for the last major attack in the province, at a police academy last month, that killed around 60 people.Muslim shrines have often been targeted by militant groups, many of whom adhere to a strict interpretation of Islam that regards veneration of saints at shrines such as Shah Noorani as heresy.Baluchistan is also a key link in a $46 billion transport and trade corridor between Pakistan and China, which hinges on a deep-water port in the southwestern city of Gwadar.(Additional reporting by Omar Fahmy in CAIRO; Writing by Kay Johnson; Editing by John Stonestreet and Dale Hudson)

Fear and relief at Iraqi checkpoint on escape route from Mosul-[Reuters]-By Stephen Kalin-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

KOKJALI, Iraq (Reuters) - The Iraqi police interrogator paced back and forth, towering over a dozen men from Mosul who were crouching in the dirt after escaping an area of the city recently recovered from Islamic State."The security forces are now going to liberate your city. How is it possible that you don't know who those rats are?" First Lieutenant Qaisar Mohammed asked the men in the village of Kokjali on Friday, demanding names and phone numbers of the jihadists controlling the rest of Mosul.Government forces are relying on intelligence from evacuees and sources still inside the city in their campaign to recapture Mosul from Islamic State, which seized a third of the country in 2014.Authorities are also keen to screen people leaving the city to prevent fighters from slipping through front lines in disguise and going underground to resume their insurgency.Twenty five-year old Najah, who had left his home in Mosul hours earlier, acknowledged that he knows some neighbours who were with Islamic State. But he says his information is limited because the militants kept changing houses and instilled such fear in ordinary people that nobody dared spend much time with them or ask too many questions.More than 45,000 civilians have fled their homes since the Mosul operation began less than a month ago, a fraction of the 1 million people the United Nations has warned could eventually evacuate the city.Mohammed, who previously worked in a western Mosul district that was a hotbed for Islamic State's al Qaeda predecessor, told Reuters that most residents cooperated with the authorities. Some have been less forthcoming."After two years under Daesh (Islamic State), they have terror in their hearts," he said. "Their reaction is fear. They think maybe the Iraqi forces cannot liberate Mosul and then they will return. That is how they think."The Iraqi operation, involving a 100,000-strong alliance of troops, security forces, Kurdish peshmerga and Shi'ite militias, backed by U.S.-led air strikes, is doing everything it can to make sure that doesn't happen, but so far it has gained just a small foothold in the city.-FLEEING FROM MORTARS-The checkpoint in Kokjali, manned by counter-terrorism forces and local police, is the first stop for residents leaving eastern Mosul.Vehicles packed with civilians stop for a brief weapons check before continuing towards Kurdish-controlled areas.Tears streamed down the face of a woman in one car, betraying the mixture of fear and relief expressed by many. Those who arrive at Kokjali on foot are sometimes questioned by police while they wait for government buses. They are then taken to another checkpoint where their names are entered into a database and checked against lists of Islamic State suspects.People who are cleared head mostly to camps, while others are held for further questioning.Mohammed's checkpoint is more than a kilometre from the front line inside Mosul, but it is far from safe.Earlier this week, an Islamic State fighter slipped among civilians at a similar site north of Mosul and blew himself up, he said. A few days later, a person wearing a black face veil and carrying a child did the same on the southeastern front.Along with such suicide attacks, the retreating jihadists have begun bombarding heavily populated civilian areas with mortars.A 54-year-old man from the Zahra district of the city said he had escaped with his two sons after a hellish night. Islamic State had launched shells randomly, he said, and laid down gunfire so heavy "it was like it was raining".(Reporting by Stephen Kalin; editing by Giles Elgood)

Turkey issues warning over travel to U.S. after Trump protests-[Reuters]-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey warned its citizens about travel to the United States on Saturday in response to what the foreign ministry called increasingly violent protests against President-elect Donald Trump."Within the context of risks caused by the incidents and of social tension, our citizens who live in the U.S., or who are considering traveling there, should be cautious," the ministry said in a statement.Demonstrators planned to gather again on Saturday in U.S. cities nationwide to protest against Trump, whose election they say poses a threat to their civil and human rights, a day after a protester was shot in Portland, Oregon.Last month, the U.S. State Department updated its travel warning on Turkey, ordering family members of consulate employees in Istanbul to leave the country, citing threats against U.S. citizens. There has been growing tension between the two NATO allies after repeated calls from Turkey to extradite U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara blames for a failed coup in July.Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Wednesday he hoped for an improvement in bilateral ties after Trump's victory, and again called for Gulen's extradition.(Writing by Ece Toksabay; editing by John Stonestreet)

Russia says will need U.N. guarantee for new Aleppo humanitarian pauses-[Reuters]-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday it would need the U.N. mission in Syria to formally confirm its ability to deliver aid to eastern Aleppo before Moscow agreed to any new humanitarian pauses in fighting in the shattered Syrian city.Moscow says previous temporary ceasefires on the ground, called to allow aid deliveries and the evacuation of the wounded and civilians, have come to nothing because rebels have opened fire on anyone trying to come in or out.Rebels contest that and say it is the Syrian army and its allies who have sabotaged the humanitarian pauses."The Russian Defense Ministry will be ready to consider introducing new 'humanitarian pauses' at any time as soon as representatives of the U.N. mission in Syria officially confirm their readiness and possibility to deliver humanitarian aid to eastern Aleppo and to evacuate wounded and sick civilians," Major-General Igor Konashenkov said in a statement. The occasional humanitarian pauses on the ground are distinct from a unilateral moratorium on Russian air strikes on rebel targets inside Aleppo, which remains in place for now.(Reporting by Andrew Osborn; editing by Polina Devitt)

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

21  And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22  And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23  And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

First U.S. transgender soldiers make gender transition after policy shift-[Reuters]-By Sebastien Malo-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

NEW YORK (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - For several years, transgender U.S. Army Captain Julia Harrison shunned military social events, anxious at the thought of having to wear the pants and coat of male service members despite identifying as a woman. But earlier this year, the Army officer was able to attend her first military ball donning the dress uniform assigned to female soldiers."If I hadn't been able to wear that uniform then I simply wouldn't have attended the event," said Harrison, who asked to be identified by a pseudonym. "More than the uniform, it was the feeling of being part of the army family again."A month after the repeal of a ban on transgender people openly serving in the U.S. military went into effect, Harrison is part of a small contingent of soldiers who have officially changed their gender on armed forces records.Up to 10,700 transgender people may be serving in the U.S. military out of a personnel of 1.4 million, according to a 2016 study by the RAND Corporation, a California-based defence think tank. But only a handful have so far sought for their gender to be changed in military records.SPART*A, an online support group that includes roughly 500 active-duty transgender members of the military, said at least 10 transgender soldiers had sought to formally register their preferred gender."We've got many more who started their process a little later than that and they're working their way through the administrative process," said Blake Dremann, SPART*A's president. An Army spokesman declined to confirm the figure, while the U.S. Department of Defense said the number across the armed forces was "small".-A TESTING CHAPTER-This summer, Harrison recalls watching in her office as U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced live on television he was repealing the ban on serving openly by transgender troops. Previously, the ban had meant a soldier like Harrison could be discharged on the basis of being transgender.Harrison stepped outside her office to take in the life-altering news in the privacy of her car."It was hard to believe that we had finally gotten to that point," she said. "It just kind of took a moment ... to let it feel like it was real."Changing gender had been a testing chapter of Harrison's life, putting a strain on her marriage and raising the spectre of losing a career in which she had invested more than a decade.During a one-year deployment in Afghanistan, Harrison grew tired of the many precautions she took to avoid uncomfortable situations in the male living quarters. She would shower after other soldiers - sometimes as late as 2 am, and wait for the dozens of men with whom she shared a tent to leave before getting dressed in the morning."There was just this constant anxiety and worry and I knew that something sort of wasn't right," Harrison, who is in her 30s told the Thomson Reuters Foundation."It sort of starts to consume your thoughts."With the support of her wife, Harrison finally began medically transitioning to the body of a woman, eventually legally changing her name.Still, as she looked increasingly feminine after a series of cosmetic surgeries, she remained in the eyes of the Army a male soldier whose subordinates were required to address as 'sir'.Then one day, Harrison was outed to her unit by a colleague who had tracked her down on social media."I was pretty distraught," she said.-HOLDING BACK-Most U.S. transgender military veteran and active-duty service members have been harassed at work, according to a 2013 study by the Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles.Such discrimination is likely to discourage transgender service members from making the leap to serving openly, said Denny Meyer, a spokesman for the Transgender American Veterans Association."Transgender service members have been the most discriminated against," he said in a telephone interview. Now assigned to a new unit, Harrison said commanders have been "extremely supportive".But for most service members, Meyer predicted the road to inclusion would be tortuous.Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential election this week has left many transgender advocates fearing a backlash against their community. The president-elect has promised to nominate a conservative justice to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court.Transgender members of the military "are holding back," Meyer said."They need to see the handwriting on the wall, that, yes, the Pentagon is doing what they promised."An Army spokesman said the service was in the initial stages of educating soldiers about its new transgender policy - with a training module underway."The Army is open to all individuals who can meet the physical and mental fitness standards that qualifies applicants for military service," the spokesman said.Harrison agrees that the Army is making progress."The only thing that we should be discriminating on is performance," she said. "And I think every day, we're getting a little bit closer to that."(Reporting by Sebastien Malo, Editing by Ros Russell; Please credit the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of Thomson Reuters, that covers humanitarian news, women's rights, trafficking, property rights and climate change. Katy Perry publicizes donation to Planned Parenthood following election-[CBC]-November 12, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Pop star Katy Perry says she's donated $10,000 US to the non-profit organization Planned Parenthood. In an Instagram post to her more than 50 million followers, Perry vowed to "support organizations that may have their funding support taken from them in the future by the government.""I am making a public donation to Planned Parenthood for the teenage me who made several visits to first a clinic in Santa Barbara and then Los Angeles, CA to educate myself on my sexual health, a subject I had little to no information on because of my sheltered upbringing," she wrote in a lengthy post.Perry posted a screen shot of her donation to the American organization, which offers education and advocacy for women's health and reproductive rights. It's uncertain how Planned Parenthood will be affected under a Trump administration, but the president-elect had proposed defunding the group entirely, as long as it continues to offer abortions. His proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act, also referred to as Obamacare, could also impact access to birth control options. The singer campaigned heavily alongside Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the run-up to the U.S. election."Now, more than ever, we all need to protect and create safe places for each other," Perry said on social media. "I hope I can help inspire you to make a gift as well."A call to Planned Parenthood to confirm the donation has not yet been returned.
