WASHINGTON – Almost 400 miles away from Cleveland, sweltering in a Washington, DC heat wave, thousands of potential voters stood on their feet, opening their arms in testimony, waving American and Israeli flags and vowing that for Zion’s sake, their voices would be anything but silent.Christians United for Israel’s annual summit was booked years in advance of the announcement that the Republican Party would hold its nominating convention in Cleveland the same week, but the powerful grassroots-based organization sees itself as playing a central role in the drama that continues to unfold in the 2016 elections cycle – and beyond.The organization sprang to its feet in advance of the Republican convention, when the platform committee sat down to draft party doctrine for the coming election. CUFI sought to restore language describing Jerusalem as “undivided” – asserting support for Israel’s claims over all of the city, on either side of the Green Line.“Our 501c4 [lobbying organization] was instrumental in having the word ‘undivided’ added to the Republican platform,” says Pastor John Hagee, the organization’s founder and spiritual mentor. “It was extracted previously and we as an organization want to see Jerusalem the eternal capital of the Jewish people undivided today, tomorrow and forever.”With three million largely politically inclined members, many of whom are decidedly conservative, it surprised no one that a CUFI member was already on the platform drafting committee – and the relevant subcommittee. CUFI leaders spoke to the member as well as to key figures in the Republican Party and the Trump campaign.CUFI sent out a letter expressing its concern regarding the Jerusalem language on the Thursday before the platform committee voted. But for years, that plank, so to speak, of the evangelical agenda, took second seat to domestic topics like abortion and family values.“I think 9/11 started a process in which Israel, which had always been a priority for evangelicals but lower on the list, started to emerge higher on the list,” Brog explains. “At the same time, where we’ve played a role is coming in and filling a gap left by the Moral Majority and the Christian Coalition in being a way for those evangelical Christians concerned about this issue to have a voice in an organization.”‘If you want to win over a certain block you had better be strongly and solidly pro-Israel’-“They all know that if you want to lead the Republican Party and win the Republican primaries, you need to win over this incredibly large voting block of American Christians and American evangelicals,” Brog adds. “If you want to win over a certain block you had better be strongly and solidly pro-Israel.”Hagee says that having a mobilized, pro-Israel Christian base “absolutely” influenced the increased focus on Israel among Republican primary candidates who might have otherwise concentrated on other topics.“One thing I’ve learned, and one of the things you learn in Washington, is that politicians can count very well and they have a passion to become re-elected,” Hagee smiles. “That when you represent 3.1 million votes, this is a significant force that they must be reconciled with. Example 4 - A carbon tax is imposed by provincial legislation on the supply of fuels such as gasoline, diesel, natural gas, heating fuel, propane, and coal sold in the province. The province is a participating province with an HST rate of 13%. This carbon tax is payable by purchasers/recipients of such products in the province and is collectible by suppliers at the time the fuel is purchased.

A motor vehicle owner in the province purchases 30 litres of gasoline. Before the application of the carbon tax and the HST, the base price for the gasoline is 90 cents per litre (other provincial and federal taxes normally charged on gasoline are ignored for the purposes of this example). The carbon tax levied on the purchase of gasoline is $0.065 per litre. For the 30 litres of gasoline, the driver pays a total of $32.71 calculated as follows:

Base price ($0.90 × 30)-$27.00
Carbon tax ($0.065 × 30)-1.95
Total consideration for gasoline ($27 + $1.95)-$28.95
HST ($28.95 × 13%)-3.76

The carbon tax is a provincial levy as defined in subsection 154(1) and is payable by the purchaser/recipient in respect of the supply of gasoline. Since the carbon tax levied by the provincial legislation is not prescribed in the Regulations, the carbon tax is not a prescribed provincial levy for the purposes of section 154. The amount of the carbon tax is included in the consideration payable for the supply of the gasoline upon which the supplier will calculate the HST.

Of all the absurdities in the cash-grabbing carbon pricing schemes being imposed on Canadians by their governments, the biggest one is this.Why are governments which promise to stop giving billions of dollars annually in public subsidies to major industrial greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters — for example the fossil fuel industry — devising carbon pricing schemes which give billions of dollars annually in public subsidies to major industrial greenhouse gas emitters — for example the fossil fuel industry? This is the key feature of both Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s cap-and-trade plan and Alberta Premier Rachel Notley’s carbon tax plan, both coming Jan. 1, 2017.Both will pour billions of dollars more annually into their debt-ridden government coffers, paid for by ordinary citizens, who will be charged more for most goods and services, in Alberta through higher taxes and in Ontario with higher prices.Both provinces will then redirect a substantial portion of those monies back to the same businesses and industries that are major emitters of GHGs linked to climate change.Notley’s government will do it directly, by giving them back a big chunk of the money raised by her carbon tax.Wynne’s government will do it by handing out free carbon credits to major polluters, covering 100% of their emissions, which under cap-and-trade is the same thing as giving them free money.Both the Notley and Wynne governments claim they will be doing this for the same reason.That is, to prevent the so-called “leakage” or exodus of carbon intensive industries from their provinces to other jurisdictions that do not have carbon pricing programs.For example, the United States, our largest trading partner, which, unlike Canada under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, is nowhere near imposing a national carbon price on its industries, despite the constant rhetoric of its so-called “green” president, Barack Obama.This is why people who understand how carbon pricing works — unlike most Canadian politicians and journalists — have warned for years that it had to be done in conjunction with the U.S., and why rhetoric Canada should “set an example for the world” was idiotic.Now, we’re seeing why.In order to prevent Canadian industries from fleeing to jurisdictions like the U.S., provinces like Alberta and Ontario are doing exactly the same thing that has undermined carbon pricing everywhere it’s been tried, from Norway’s 25-year-old carbon tax to Europe’s decade-old cap-and-trade market.That is, handing out huge public subsidies to big polluters, or, alternatively, exempting them from carbon pricing.Statistics Norway, the equivalent of Statistics Canada, concluded 14 years ago that the reason its carbon tax has not been effective at lowering emissions (while very effective at raising money) was that it exempted too many industries.In Europe’s cap-and-trade market, European governments handed out so many free carbon credits to major industrial polluters, that their market price crashed, making it cheaper for them to buy credits rather than reduce emissions.The realpolitik, or practical versus theoretical reason for governments to subsidize major industrial carbon dioxide emitters through carbon pricing, is to buy their political support.That’s why no one who understands how carbon pricing works was surprised big business representatives were happy to stand on the same stage as Notley when she announced her carbon tax.Of course they were. She’s going to give them billions of dollars in public subsidies from her carbon tax, ostensibly to help them make the transition to a greener economy.Which brings us to the greatest injustice of Notley’s and Wynne’s carbon pricing schemes.Why are major polluters being giving billions of dollars in public subsidies to cope with the impact of carbon pricing, at the expense of ordinary citizens who will be paying for it? This is why the only fair and rational carbon pricing scheme is known as carbon fee and dividend.It returns 100% of the money governments raise through any form of carbon pricing, which is essentially a new sales tax on consumption, back to the public in income tax cuts.This simultaneously encourages people to save money by making less carbon intensive choices in their consumer purchases, while promoting productivity and savings by allowing them to keep more of the money they earn-Unlike what Alberta and Ontario — and the Trudeau government — are planning, carbon fee and dividend is revenue neutral, transparent and eliminates the need for scams like carbon credits.That’s because its purpose is to lower emissions, not increase government revenues.Which is why no government in Canada — although B.C.’s carbon tax comes closest — supports it.

The pilot of the doomed Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 may have practised a route similar to the one presumably taken on the fateful day on 8 March, 2014 that led to its disappearance. A confidential document from the Malaysian police investigation into the issue suggests that the incident could have been a premeditated act planned by the plane's captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah.The document reportedly obtained by New York magazine stated that forensic analysis of the five hard disk drives seized from Shah's home-built flight simulator showed that he had practised the suicide route leading to a remote area in the southern Indian Ocean less than a month before the actual disappearance of the flight.However, this information was reportedly withheld by Malaysia from the investigation report — titled Factual Information — they released on the first anniversary of the disappearance of the flight. The document contained details of the findings of the investigation conducted by the Malaysian police surrounding the plane's captain.The document reportedly stated that the FBI was able to recover six deleted data points that had been stored by the Microsoft Flight Simulator X program in the weeks before the plane went missing. The data points record the simulated airplane's altitude, speed, direction of flight and other key parameters at a given point in time. These deleted data points show a flight departed Kuala Lumpur and then headed northwest over the Malacca Strait, then turned left and headed south over the Indian Ocean continuing on the same stretch over the sea until fuel exhaustion.Officials searching for the doomed MH370 believe that the actual flight also followed a similar route. Their assumption is based on signals transmitted by the Boeing 777 to a satellite after ceasing communications and steering off course.However, the presumed flight path and the simulated path vary at their endpoints, which are some 900 miles apart on the southern Indian Ocean.Shah has reportedly been a primary suspect in this case, but there were no evidence to implicate him. The "Factual Information" report even stated that the "Captain's ability to handle stress at work and home was good. There was no known history of apathy, anxiety, or irritability. There were no significant changes in his life style, interpersonal conflict or family stresses."The magazine reported that several previous media reports suggested that Australian and US officials involved in the MH370 probe have been more suspicious than their Malaysian counterparts of the role played by the pilot in the flight's disappearance.

Others continued to hold out hope."In the absence of new evidence, Malaysia, Australia and China have collectively decided to suspend the search upon completion of the 120, 000-square-kilometre (46,300-square-mile) search area," Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said after a meeting with his Australian and Chinese counterparts.There are fewer than 10,000 square kilometres (3,900 square miles) left to be searched. Bavarian police shot dead the teenager after he wounded four people from Hong Kong on the train and injured a local resident while fleeing.German Justice Minister Heiko Maas told Bild newspaper's Friday edition before the mall attack that there was "no reason to panic but it's clear that Germany remains a possible target".The incidents in Germany follow an attack in Nice, France, on July 14 in which a Tunisian drove a truck into crowds celebrating Bastille Day, killing 84. Islamic State claimed responsibility for that attack.The Munich assault was also reminiscent of Islamist militant attacks in a shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, in September 2013 and in Mumbai, India, in November 2008.Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende said on Twitter: "Horrible killings in Munich. Munich (Germany) (AFP) - Several people were killed on Friday in a shooting rampage in a Munich shopping centre and the attacker or attackers are still at large, police said.The Bild newspaper reported that a gunman ran through the mall near the Olympic stadium in the southern German city, firing on several people before fleeing in the direction of a nearby metro station."There are several dead and injured," a Munich police spokeswoman told AFP, adding that the shooting had started shortly before 1600 GMT at a McDonald's restaurant."The attacker, or several attackers, are apparently still at large."Europe has been on alert for terrorism in the wake of a string of attacks including bombings in neighbouring France and Belgium.The OEZ shopping centre was surrounded by armed police who were hunting for the attacker, while a helicopter flew overhead."There is a major police operation under way in the shopping centre," Munich police said on Twitter, urging people to avoid the area.Emergency vehicles were seen in the streets outside, as shoppers rushed away from the mall, some carrying children in their arms."Attention -- avoid the neighbourhood around the OEZ.
