ISIS 'kill list' includes names of 151 Canadians-[CBC]-June 15, 2016-YAHOONEWS

There are 151 Canadians about to get an uncomfortable phone call from police. It may go something like this: "It's probably nothing, but … your name appears to be on an ISIS kill list."Imagine getting that call. Imagine being the constable assigned to make it.CBC has obtained a copy of the list, which contains the names, and email and physical addresses of some 8,300 people around the globe. It's hard to tell what unites them. The Canadian names are mostly of women, from predominantly small centres in Canada, although there are some from large cities, too.Names not hand-picked-There are lots of theories as to how the names got on the list. What seems clear is they weren't hand-picked. These don't appear to be people targeted for who they are or what they have said or done. It doesn't even seem like the names were entered manually. Some appear multiple times. In analyzing the Canadian data, CBC has learned that most email addresses (71 per cent) appear to have been hacked at some point, either in an old LinkedIn hack or one from Myspace or Adobe. It is possible the information from those hacks was simply pushed around from group to group. Some of the information may exist in the public domain. The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) says it first uncovered the list on pro-ISIS accounts from social media platforms like Telegram.MEMRI's Elliot Zwig says the first call was to police."It's a large list, it would be difficult to follow through on them, but it's something that we've shared with law enforcement and they're taking seriously and presumably are proceeding upon," he said. "We know the right places to go, the right accounts to link up with, the right people to contact, the right forums to be present in, it came to us, it wasn't something that was overly difficult to find."'We want them dead'-The entity behind the list is called the United Cyber Caliphate. It's a sort of umbrella group for pro-ISIS hackers. It has a history of defacing websites and acting like a type of IT resource for ISIS supporters.United Cyber Caliphate and others have been busy building and releasing these lists. In the past four months, nine "kill lists" have surfaced. Sometimes, as was the case with a release of 3,600 names of New York residents in April, the hacking group publishes a bizarre accompanying graphic. That one included the phrases, "we want them dead" and "the most important citizens of New York."Civilians aren't the typical targets of these lists. Pro-ISIS hacking groups have previously targeted U.S. drone operators or transit police or government employees. This seems far more random.'Duty to inform'-There is no indication anyone on any of these lists has ever been harmed, but if they have had that call from police, they have most assuredly had a moment of pause. Various police agencies in Canada have confirmed to CBC that they are in the process of informing everyone on the list of what is going on. There is a "duty to inform." It takes time and resources and distracts from other investigations police need to be conducting. And that suits these pro-ISIS groups just fine.To keep people on edge, and police on the run, is exactly what they want to do.A spokesman told CBC News the RCMP is aware of the list and is working with domestic and international law enforcement partners to assess the information and notify Canadians on the list. "Because of the sensitive nature of this matter, we will not be providing further comment," Harold Pfleiderer said. "We have no information indicating that this threat is linked to the terrorist attack that occurred earlier this week in Florida."The CBC respects the privacy and safety of those named on the list, and will not publish their names.

CIA chief: IS working to send operatives to the West-[The Canadian Press]-Deb Riechmann, The Associated Press-June 16, 2016-YAHOONEWS

WASHINGTON - CIA Director John Brennan told Congress on Thursday that the Islamic State remains "formidable" and "resilient," is training and attempting to deploy operatives for further attacks on the West and will rely more on guerrilla-style tactics to compensate for its territorial losses in the Middle East.Giving the Senate intelligence committee an update on the threat from extremists, Brennan said IS has been working to build an apparatus to direct and inspire attacks against its foreign enemies, as in the recent attacks in Paris and Brussels — ones the CIA believes were directed by IS leaders."ISIL has a large cadre of Western fighters who could potentially serve as operatives for attacks in the West," Brennan said, using another acronym for the group. He said IS probably is working to smuggle them into countries, perhaps among refugee flows or through legitimate means of travel.Brennan also noted the group's call for followers to conduct so-called lone-wolf attacks in their home countries. He called the attack in Orlando a "heinous act of wanton violence" and an "assault on the values of openness and tolerance" that define the United States as a nation.Brennan said the CIA is sharing intelligence with the FBI to help identify potential lone-wolf attackers, but the CIA's responsibility is to gather information about operations overseas. He said IS is gradually cultivating its various branches into an interconnected network. The branch in Libya is likely the most advanced and most dangerous, but IS is trying to increase its influence in Africa and to plot attacks in the region and in Europe, Brennan said. The IS branch in the Sinai has become the "most active and capable terrorist group in all of Egypt," attacking the Egyptian military and government targets in addition to foreigners and tourists, such as the downing of a Russian passenger jet last October.Other branches have struggled to gain traction, Brennan said. "The Yemen branch, for instance, has been riven with factionalism. And the Afghanistan-Pakistan branch has struggled to maintain its cohesion, in part because of competition with the Taliban."He said the U.S.-led coalition has made progress combating the group, which has had to surrender large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria and has lost some of its leaders in airstrikes. IS has struggled to replenish its ranks of fighters, Brennan said, because fewer of them are travelling to Syria and others have defected."The group appears to be a long way from realizing the vision that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, its leader, laid out when he declared the caliphate two years ago in Mosul," Iraq, Brennan said.He said the group's ability to raise money has also been curtailed, although the group still continues to generate at least tens of millions of dollars in revenue each month, mostly from taxation and from sales of crude oil."Unfortunately, despite all our progress against ISIL on the battlefield and in the financial realm, our efforts have not reduced the group's terrorism capability and global reach," he said."In fact, as the pressure mounts on ISIL, we judge that it will intensify its global terror campaign to maintain its dominance of the global terrorism agenda."Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., committee chairman, said there has been much public discussion about progress the U.S.-led coalition has made to contain the group's geographic reach, to degrade its finance and media operations and to remove its fighters from the battlefield. But he said the militant group's "global battlefield now includes the United States and we cannot stand idly by.""Now is not a time to pay lip service to these threats," Burr said. "The sooner we as a nation realize that there is only one path for us to take at this juncture, the sooner we will destroy ISIL and ensure the continued safety of our nation."

Russia says 48-hour truce reached in Syria's Aleppo-[The Canadian Press]-Bassem Mroue, The Associated Press-June 16, 2016-YAHOONEWS

BEIRUT - The Russian Defence Ministry said a 48-hour cessation of hostilities has been declared in the divided northern Syrian city of Aleppo and activists reported a relative calm in Syria's largest city on Thursday. In past months, Aleppo has witnessed fierce fighting and bombardment, which has claimed the lives of hundreds of people on both sides of the contested city.Russia said the truce went into effect after midnight Wednesday. Several similar truces have been declared in the city in recent months. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the city was calm early Thursday but that government warplanes later bombarded several rebel-held neighbourhoods in Aleppo. The Observatory said that since the latest round of violence began on April 22, 627 people have been killed and some 2,900 wounded. It said the dead included 124 minors under the age of 18.Rebels seized part of Aleppo from forces loyal to President Bashar Assad in 2012. Assad's forces, backed by Russian airstrikes, have nearly encircled rebel-held parts of the city in recent months.Aleppo-based activist Baraa al-Halaby said opposition fighters in the city — once Syria's commercial centre — were not informed about the truce. He said that although there is a truce, government forces as well as Russian and Syrian warplanes have been targeting the Castello road that links rebel-held areas with the rest of the country, preventing people from leaving."This is a joke," al-Halaby said by telephone, speaking of the alleged cease-fire. "The Castello road has been bombarded with barrel bombs for the past 12 hours."Jan Egeland, who is leading the U.N. Syria envoy's effort to get humanitarian aid into the country, called the truce a "confidence-building measure" and a key step toward possibly getting convoys into Aleppo "where it has been impossible to do humanitarian work in many areas for too long.""The fighting has gotten worse. The bombing is worse. The protection needs of the civilian population are being trampled upon across the Syrian map," he told reporters in Geneva, referring to the overall security situation in Syria."It is then very positive that a truce for 48 hours was declared today in Aleppo — Aleppo city — we need more of this and we need it in Aleppo and we need it elsewhere because we are acutely aware that the access we have now can end tomorrow," Egeland added.Humanitarian aid organization Mercy Corps said there has been "a significant decrease in violence, although there have been minor infringements" since the cease-fire went into effect."Mercy Corps is deeply appreciative of any opportunity to deliver life-saving aid safely and for the people of Syria to have relief from the seemingly endless violence of this conflict," said Xavier Tissier, North Syria director for Mercy Corps."However, a scant 48 hours is not enough time to ensure that the hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people in east Aleppo have the food and other essentials they need," he said. "Incredibly short, one-off windows cannot be considered a serious attempt at permitting humanitarian access. We need permanent, sustained, unfettered access that the people of Aleppo can depend on."Near Aleppo, fighting continued between members of the Islamic State group and the U.S.-backed predominantly Kurdish Syria Democratic Forces near the IS stronghold of Manbij. The U.S. Central Command said that as of Monday, the Syrian Arab Coalition, which is part of the SDF, completed the first phase of their operation to free the town of Manbij by securing the territory surrounding the IS-held town."After clearing Daesh from this area they are now ready for the second phase to liberate the city itself," the CENTCOM statement said, using an Arabic acronym to refer to IS. It added that since the operation against IS in Manbij began in late May, the U.S.-led coalition has conducted more than 190 airstrikes in the vicinity of Manbij.____Associated Press writers Jamey Keaten in Geneva and Vladimir Isachenkov in Moscow contributed to this report.

Egypt says flight data recorder of doomed plane recovered-[Associated Press]-MAGGIE MICHAEL-June 17, 2016-YAHOONEWS

CAIRO (AP) — The Egyptian investigation committee said the flight data recorder of the EgyptAir plane that crashed last month killing all 66 people on board was recovered early Friday from the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, one day after the plane's cockpit voice recorder was also retrieved. The announcement came two days after officials said they had found the wreckage of the Airbus A320 and had started mapping its debris on the seabed. The latest findings raise hopes that investigators will be finally able to determine the cause of the crash and whether the plane broke apart in the air, or stayed intact until it struck the water. The EgyptAir Airbus A320 was flying to Cairo from Paris when it crashed on May 19 between the Greek island of Crete and the Egyptian coast. The wreckage was believed to be at a depth of about 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). Previously, search crews found only small floating pieces of debris and some human remains. On Friday, the committee said in a statement that the vessel John Lethbridge, contracted by the Egyptian government to search for the plane wreckage, pulled the data recorder out of the sea in stages. It added that it managed to "successfully retrieve" the memory unit of the recorder which is the "most important" component. While the statement didn't elaborate on the condition of the recorder, but it implied that the memory unit had been safely recovered. The two units, the so-called black boxes, are tucked into the plane's tail. The committee said that the data will be downloaded and analyzed once it arrives from the port city of Alexandria, where they will be transferred from the site of the crash.Earlier in the day an official in the committee said that the investigators had already started analyzing the cockpit voice recorder after it arrived in Cairo overnight. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

Second flight recorder retrieved from crashed EgyptAir flight-[Reuters]-June 17, 2016-YAHOONEWS

CAIRO (Reuters) - A second flight recorder has been retrieved from the crashed EgyptAir flight MS804, containing data from aircraft systems which could shed light on what brought the plane down last month, Egyptian investigators said on Friday. An Egyptian committee investigating the crash into the eastern Mediterranean Sea made the announcement a day after search teams found the cockpit voice recorder in a breakthrough for investigators seeking to explain what caused the plane to go down, killing all 66 people on board. The Airbus A320 crashed early on May 19 on its way from Paris to Cairo. The two blackbox recorders are crucial to explaining what went wrong. The Egyptian investigation committee said preparations were under way to transfer the two flight recorders to Alexandria where they will be received by an official from the general prosecutor's office and investigators. No group has claimed responsibility for bringing down the plane, but investigation sources have said that it was too early to rule out any causes, including terrorism. If intact, the cockpit recorder should reveal pilot conversations and any cockpit alarms, as well as other clues such as engine noise. But crash experts say it may provide only limited insight into what caused the crash, especially if the crew was confused or unable to diagnose any faults. For that, the second black box containing data from the aircraft systems is needed. The crash is the third blow since October to Egypt's travel industry, which is still suffering from the 2011 uprising that ended Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule.A Russian plane crashed in the Sinai Peninsula last October, killing all 224 people on board in an attack claimed by Islamic State. In March, an EgyptAir plane was hijacked by a man wearing a fake suicide belt. No one was hurt.(Reporting by Omar Fahmy; Writing by Michael Georgy; Editing by Alison Williams and Dominic Evans)

Egypt says it has found plane wreckage-[The Canadian Press]-Maggie Michael, The Associated Press-June 15, 2016-yahoonews

CAIRO - Egypt on Wednesday said that it spotted and obtained images from the wreckage of the EgyptAir plane that crashed into the Mediterranean last month, killing all 66 people on board, according to a statement by the country's investigation committee. The committee said that the vessel John Lethbridge, which was contracted by the Egyptian government to join the search for the plane debris and flight data recorders, "had identified several main locations of the wreckage." It added that it obtained images of the wreckage located between the Greek island of Crete and the Egyptian coast. The next step, the committee said, will be drawing a map showing the wreckage location. The 75-meter (82.05-yard)-long survey vessel is equipped with sonar and other equipment capable of detecting wreckage at depths up to 6,000 feet (1,830 metres). The EgyptAir Airbus A320 en route to Cairo from Paris had been cruising normally in clear skies on an overnight flight on May 19. The radar showed that the doomed aircraft turned 90 degrees left, then a full 360 degrees to the right, plummeting from 38,000 feet (11,582 metres) to 15,000 feet (4,572 metres) before disappearing at about 10,000 feet (3,048 metres).Leaked flight data indicated a sensor detected smoke in a lavatory and a fault in two of the plane's cockpit windows in the final moments of the flight. The cause of the crash still has not been determined. Ships and planes from Egypt, Greece, France, the United States and other nations have been searching the Mediterranean Sea north of the Egyptian port of Alexandria for the jet's voice and flight data recorders, as well as more bodies and parts of the aircraft.Since the crash began, only small pieces of wreckage and human remains have been recovered in a search that has been narrowed down to five-kilometre (three-mile) area of the Mediterranean.Egypt's civil aviation minister Sherif Fathi has said he believes terrorism is a more likely explanation than equipment failure or some other catastrophic event. But no hard evidence has emerged on the cause, and no militant group has claimed to have downed the jet.Wednesday's announcement came nearly two weeks after the French ship Laplace detected black box signals from the missing plane.Locator pings emitted by flight data and cockpit voice recorders can be picked up from deep underwater. The Laplace is equipped with three detectors designed to pick up those signals, which in the case of the EgyptAir plane are believed to be at a depth of some 3,000 metres (9,842 feet). By comparison, the wreckage of the Titanic is lying at a depth of some 3,800 metres (12,500 feet).Ten days later, Egyptian investigators said that time is running out in the search for the black boxes. They said on Sunday that nearly two weeks remain before the batteries of the flight's data and cockpit voice recorders expire and they stop emitting signals. If retrieved, the boxes could reveal whether a mechanical fault, a hijacking or a bomb caused the disaster. The voice recorder should contain a record of the last 30 minutes in the cockpit, and is equipped to detect even loud breathing. The data recorder would contain technical information on the engines, wings and cabin pressure. Investigators hope the black boxes will offer clues as to why there was no distress call.Finding them without the signals is possible but more difficult.Last October, a Russian airliner crashed in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula shortly after taking off from the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, killing all 224 people on board. A local affiliate of the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for downing the aircraft just hours after the crash. In November, Russia said an explosive device brought down the aircraft. The two disasters have unsettled authorities at the Cairo airport, where false alarms or bomb threats have caused lengthy delays to flights and at least one cancellation last week.Security has also been considerably tightened at Egypt's 20-plus airports since the Russian plane crash, with passengers now subjected to roughly the same security measures in force at major international airports.

Wildfires in California, New Mexico trigger evacuations-[Reuters]-By Brendan O'Brien-June 17, 2016-YAHOONEWS

(Reuters) - Firefighters worked into early Friday morning to try to contain a growing wildfire in coastal Southern California and a larger blaze in rural New Mexico as hot weather fed flames that triggered hundreds of evacuations. The Sherpa Fire in California grew to about 1,400 acres (560 hectares) overnight after forcing authorities to evacuate 400 homes and businesses and to close part of the 101 Freeway, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office and fire information center InciWeb.About 1,200 firefighters were trying to keep the fire from exploding out of control as airplane tankers and helicopters dropped water, according to officials and online videos. The blaze, which ignited on Wednesday in a wilderness area northwest of Santa Barbara, has consumed chaparral and tall grass in the Los Padres National Forest, according to InciWeb.Because of the fire, officials said they had closed two state beaches and some ranch land, forcing out campers and horses.Southeast of Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Dog Head Fire, which broke out on Tuesday about 6 miles (10 km) northwest of the town of Tajique, has also forced evacuations and grown to about 16,000 acres (6,500 hectares) overnight.Governor Susana Martinez declared a state of emergency and ordered the state's National Guard to be prepared to assist if needed, according to a statement from her office. The fire destroyed 24 homes and 21 other structures, InciWeb said. The blaze has burned through timber in central New Mexico, pushing heavy smoke toward cities more than 100 miles (160 km) away as flames spread through a largely unpopulated area, state fire information officer Peter D'Aquanni said in a phone interview on Thursday.D'Aquanni said winds could shift the flames to the east as more than 600 firefighters tackle the blaze.Torrance County Sheriff Heath White said on Thursday that his office was evacuating about 200 people. The National Weather Service on Friday predicted dry, windy and hot weather for the region through next week, which could lead to more wildfires. The weather service issued excessive heat warnings for areas in the U.S. Southwest, including California, Nevada and Arizona and New Mexico. Its forecast office in Phoenix predicted temperatures as high as 119 degrees Fahrenheit (48.3 Celsius) in the coming days, which would exceed record highs.(Reporting by Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee; Editing by Lisa Von Ahn)

Born from the ashes: Fort McMurray family returns home, with new baby in tow-[CBC]-June 15, 2016-YAHOONEWS

When mother Stacey Greeley was 38 weeks pregnant, she and her husband were evacuated from Fort McMurray. But now the family has returned home, along with their new addition.Greeley, originally from Queen's Cove, Newfoundland, and her husband Derrick were evacuated from the Alberta community during the wildfire. They didn't have time to pack up the newborn's items, so they left with nothing and drove to nearby Cold Lake to be with family. When they got there, the donations started to roll in."I guess word got out of me being there, we ended up with four car seats, strollers, boxes and boxes of clothes. It was unreal what Cold Lake did for us," said Greeley."It's a small town, so it's kind of like Newfoundland, actually."As if waiting until everything was ready for him, Deegan William Raymond Greeley was born on June 1 — 10 days late.It wasn't long after that people started to return to Fort McMurray, including the Greeleys, whose home was safe from the fires but in need of baby preparation."Smoke levels were pretty high in the basement, but my husband and his father came back early and scrubbed out the basement [...] had environmentalist come in and make sure all the air was good for our little one to come back."Now, the family is settling back into their home and are giving away those donated items from Cold Lake to another family in Fort McMurray. And how is Deegan liking Fort Mac? "Oh he loves it. So much easier, [because] I had everything ready," said Greeley."Now I'm not living out of boxes anymore."

Dying MP's gender-neutral national anthem bill passes third reading in Commons-[The Canadian Press]-The Canadian Press-June 16, 2016-YAHOONEWS

OTTAWA - Ailing Liberal MP Mauril Belanger was in the House of Commons Wednesday as his private member's bill to render O Canada more gender neutral cleared one final hurdle. The legislation still requires the approval of the Senate, however, which means Belanger — who was diagnosed last November with Lou Gehrig's disease — may not live to see it become law.Bill C-210, which would change the second line of the anthem from "true patriot love, in all thy sons command" to "in all of us command," passed third and final reading in the Commons by a margin of 225-74.As the vote began, Liberal MPs stood and applauded Belanger, who sat in the House in his wheelchair. Many flashed him a thumbs-up sign, his trademark gesture, as their votes were registered. When it was done, the entire House broke into an impromptu rendition of O Canada, as well as a rousing standing ovation. The anthem change has been a Belanger cause for years, but took on far greater urgency in recent months after it was confirmed he has an incurable, fatal, neurodegenerative condition also known as ALS.Belanger ran and easily won election for a seventh time in October, but found he was having difficulty speaking during the final weeks of the long campaign. He went public with his condition at the end of November, saying he would drop out of the race to be Speaker of the Commons, a position he had long coveted.Belanger's disease is a particularly aggressive version of ALS — a fact made plain by the alarming rate at which his condition appeared to erode.By January, when he introduced his bill, he had lost his ability to speak, and so needed a voice generator to convert text into computerized speech — the first use of such technology in the Commons. In March, he was named honorary Speaker. He shuffled down the corridors of the Centre Block using a walker. He had to be helped into the chair. He presided using a tablet and, at one point, mopped tears from his eyes.In early May, he used the iPad again to open second reading of his bill. He seemed noticeably thinner. His collar was loose to accommodate a tube inserted in his throat to help him breathe and keep his lungs clear of fluid. The Conservatives opposed the bill on the grounds that important pieces of the national heritage shouldn't be trifled with. If they are changed, it should be with broad consent of Canadians, they argued. However, a number of Tory MPs — Gerry Ritz, Peter Kent, Michelle Rempel and Candice Bergen, among others — voted to support the legislation.Belanger has said the change would actually return the anthem closer to the original "thou dost in us command" — wording that was changed to "all thy sons" in 1913, presumably to honour men in the armed forces at the approach of the First World War.Since then, Belanger said, women have won the right to vote, to run for office and to die in combat as members of the military and the anthem should not slight half the population. The Conservatives tried to resurrect "thou dost in us command" in the 2010 speech from the throne, only to face strong public opposition. They dropped the idea.

New bill would allow border guards to collect biographic data on those leaving Canada-[CBC]-June 15, 2016-YAHOONEWS

The federal government has announced proposed changes to the Customs Act that would allow border guards to collect biographic information from everyone leaving Canada. The move will help implement the final stages of the entry-exit agreement Canada signed under a joint border initiative with the U.S. in 2011.The legislation proposed by Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale, titled "An Act to amend the Customs Act," is one of three public safety bills the Liberal government plans to introduce this week. A bill on pre-clearance for people crossing the border is expected tomorrow."Today we have introduced draft amendments to the Customs Act to allow the collection of basic exit information when anyone leaves our country. It might come as a surprise to a great many Canadians that this doesn't happen already," Goodale told reporters in Ottawa Wednesday. The Canada Border Services Agency currently collects biographical information from everyone entering Canada, but Goodale said the government does not have a reliable way to track when and where a person leaves Canada. This bill will close the gap, he said. The minister explained that the biographical information collected would not go beyond what Canadians would find on the second page of their passport: full name, nationality, date of birth, gender and issuing authority of the passport."Having this data will allow us to better respond to Amber Alerts, for example, on missing children," Goodale said. "It will help us deal with human trafficking. It will help us deal better with illegal travel by terrorist fighters, it will help John McCallum deal with immigration proceedings and visa applications and it will help us ensure the integrity of Canadian social programs."Canadians who were required to be a resident of Canada to access benefits, for example, will no longer be able to "defraud taxpayers" by not meeting the residency requirement, Goodale said. The measure would mean a savings of "several tens of millions of dollars a year, perhaps more," he said. The measures would also help save money currently being spent by immigration enforcement officials who are wasting time trying to track down people who have already left the country.Goodale also said that the bill would also introduce a number of "technical amendments" to the act that would allow the government to better crack down on smuggling. The minister said that while the new measures would increase security for Canada, it would not "impede the flow of people and goods across the border."Building on D.C. commitments-Goodale said no data will be collected from people leaving Canada by air, because the passenger manifests for each aircraft would serve the same purpose. The move to collect basic information from travellers also builds on a commitment Canada made to the U.S. during the state visit to Washington to deepen co-operation along the shared border. The changes would also bring Canada into line with the practices already employed by Canada's Five Eyes intelligence allies: the U.S., United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.Government House leader Dominic LeBlanc also served notice today that he will propose new legislation to create an all-party committee on national security. That bill, titled "An Act to establish the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians and to make consequential amendments to certain Acts," could be tabled as early as Thursday. The Liberals campaigned on a promise to create a committee tasked with overseeing all of Canada's national security agencies.

Trump's new Obama claims thrust him into uncharted territory-[The Canadian Press]-Julie Pace And Jill Colvin, The Associated Press-June 15, 2016-YAHOONEWS

WASHINGTON - Donald Trump's latest accusation against President Barack Obama — that he's putting U.S. enemies ahead of America's own people — is thrusting him into uncharted territory for the presidential candidate of any major political party.Trump spent the first days following the Orlando nightclub massacre hinting Obama was sympathizing with or even supporting terrorists. Some of those times he said he was repeating what "many people" believe — one of the presumptive Republican nominee's favourite ways to sprinkle conspiracy theories into the presidential campaign.By Wednesday, Trump abandoned the innuendo and embraced a more pointed accusation against Obama."Media fell all over themselves criticizing what Donald Trump 'may have insinuated about @POTUS.' But he's right," Trump posted on Twitter. The message included a link to a story by Breitbart News, a Trump-friendly website, that claimed to have proof the Obama administration backed a terror group in Iraq.Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks said the candidate was retweeting a message from another Twitter user. Still, it was an effort by the GOP's White House pick to explicitly link the sitting Democratic president with those seeking to harm Americans, just days after 49 people were killed and dozens more wounded in Florida."Trump's comments regarding the president crossed every line," John Weaver, the senior strategist for Ohio Gov. John Kasich's failed Republican presidential campaign, wrote on Twitter. He cast Trump as a "peddler of lies, fantasies and half-baked conspiracy theories."For years, Trump has been the most high-profile proponent of the "birther" movement that falsely claims Obama is a Muslim who was born outside the United States, when in fact he is a Christian born in Hawaii. The businessman has also floated debunked conspiracy theories about former rival Ted Cruz's father being involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and Hillary Clinton playing a role in the death of former White House aide Vince Foster. For Republican officials already struggling with whether to fully embrace him, Trump's willingness to engage in stories usually limited to supermarket tabloids is only making their options more complicated."I don't go for these conspiracy theories and the "birtherism" nonsense," said Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pa. The congressman, who has not endorsed Trump, said that while it's fair to criticize aspects of Obama's approach to combatting terrorism, "I part company with those then who want to get into these conspiracy theories."In a statement to The Associated Press on Tuesday, Trump said Obama "continues to prioritize our enemy over our allies, and for that matter, the American people."Clinton, who will face Trump in the November election, quickly challenged Republicans to either "stand up to their presumptive nominee" or "stand by his accusation about our president."Trump's suggestions about Obama come as the president takes a more active role in the White House race. In a blistering speech Tuesday, Obama said Trump was a "dangerous" threat to national security and was putting America's religious freedoms at risk by calling for a temporary ban on foreign-born Muslims entering the U.S.But the White House has avoided commenting on Trump's attempts to link Obama to terrorism, calling the matter "small."Trump has offered no verifiable information to back up his assertions. His theory was not supported by the document cited in the report he linked to Wednesday — a secret 2012 Defence Intelligence Agency analysis. The Breitbart story, citing that document, suggested that the United States was in league with al-Qaida in Iraq, the precursor to the Islamic State.Instead, the document states generally what was widely known at the time — that "the West, Gulf countries, and Turkey support the opposition" to the government of Syrian leader Bashar Assad. The U.S. backs several anti-Assad rebel groups but does not include al-Qaida in any negotiations or material or financial support, even as it fights Assad's government. Whether the U.S. co-operated with figures from that group is not addressed in the document.Trump did not mention the report or his broader accusations during a rally Wednesday in Atlanta. But some of those in the crowd said they were on board with the candidate's assertions."I think he's dead on the money," said Brad Butler, a 45-year-old Trump supporter from Dallas, Georgia. "So this is Islamic terror and this is his religion. Why would he (Obama) be mad at it?"Diane Gurganus, 70, from Jefferson, Georgia, said she, too, believed Obama was a Muslim whose religious beliefs were affecting the way he has responded to Islamic State militants and the Orlando attacks."It's like his agenda is to destroy America in everything he's done," she said.___Colvin reported from Atlanta. Sanders, Clinton meet for nearly two hours after she wins final primary-YAHOONEWS-Liz Goodwin-Senior National Affairs Reporter-June 14, 2016

Hillary Clinton and her top advisers met with Sen. Bernie Sanders and his wife, Jane Sanders, on Tuesday evening shortly after Clinton was projected the landslide winner of the final Democratic primary in Washington, D.C.The meeting at a D.C. hotel lasted nearly two hours and marked the first time the candidates have met face to face in months. Neither candidate spoke to the press after their conclave ended, but the pair had agreed to discuss the end of the Democratic race and Sanders’ desire to change the Democratic Party. The Clinton and Sanders campaigns released nearly identical, carefully worded statements after the meeting, saying both candidates had congratulated each other on their campaigns and had a “positive” discussion. Both camps said they talked about the “dangerous threat Donald Trump poses to the nation.” The Clinton camp said the pair discussed “uniting the party,” while Sanders’ statement omitted that phrasing. The candidates agreed to work to develop a “progressive agenda” for the party platform in July, Sanders’ statement said, while the Clinton campaign called it their “shared agenda.”Sanders has at times vowed to “fight” all the way to the Democratic convention in July, but Clinton has said she expects that they will go into the convention united.Clinton became the presumptive Democratic nominee early last week, but Sanders has not yet endorsed her or conceded his own bid. The Vermont senator faces mounting pressure to step down and throw his support behind her. (In 2008, Clinton had already conceded at this point in the race to now-President Barack Obama.)-Sanders is clearly already starting down that road. Sanders’ campaign announced to supporters Tuesday that he will make an important video announcement Thursday night from his hometown of Burlington. The senator has also stopped saying he wants to convince superdelegates to flip from supporting Clinton to supporting him. And he declined to hold a rally Tuesday night, even though he has held them on other election nights. But the candidate is still not going down without a fight. In a feisty news conference earlier Tuesday, Sanders reiterated that he wants to fundamentally transform the Democratic Party, and called for a replacement of the Democratic National Committee’s “leadership,” presumably meaning chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. (He has already endorsed the congresswoman’s primary opponent in Florida.)-“I do believe that we have to replace the current Democratic National Committee leadership,” Sanders said. He also called for “the most progressive platform” ever at the convention in July.Sanders has vowed to take his progressive ideals to the convention, but it’s unclear how many of his goals — which include changing the Democratic nomination process by eliminating superdelegates and allowing independents to vote in Democratic primaries in every state — he can achieve.“He has every right to express his opinion — he got a lot of votes!” said former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a Clinton supporter and a former chair of the DNC. “That doesn’t mean he has to get his way there.” Sanders has some leverage in making his demands. Clinton will count on Sanders to rally his supporters — especially younger voters, who she has had trouble attracting in the Democratic primaries — to vote for her.No matter what happens at the convention, Sanders will be a key figure in the progressive movement going forward. The senator has amassed a valuable email list of supporters who have already donated millions of dollars to Sanders-backed candidates. “Bernie Sanders will be a powerful force in the Democratic Party over the next five or 10 years if he chooses to be, because he can raise money and he can support progressive candidates,” Rendell said.

OZONE DEPLETION JUDGEMENT ON THE EARTH DUE TO SIN

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold,(7X OR 7-DEGREES HOTTER) as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people,(ISRAEL) and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened,(DAY LIGHT HOURS SHORTENED) there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake (ISRAELS SAKE) those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)(THE ASTEROID HITS EARTH HERE)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Dangerous triple-digit heat to challenge records in southwestern US this weekend-By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist-June 15, 2016; 6:17 AM ET

Heat will build to dangerous and record-challenging levels in much of the southwestern United States toward this weekend and into early next week.Temperatures will climb well past 100 F in parts of California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona with the worst days of heat likely from Saturday to Tuesday. However, the heat will not stop there."A truly historic heat wave is likely to bring intense and all-time (late 1800s to present day) record-challenging heat to a large part of the Southwest this weekend into next week," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Ken Clark said. While the summer months can be unbearable in terms of heat in the Southwest, temperatures will climb to 10-20 F above average for the middle of June during the upcoming pattern."The core of the heat will be centered on Arizona, where portions of the state, including Phoenix, could approach their highest temperature on record for any calendar day," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said.Temperatures may not only reach levels not felt in the past several years but could challenge the highest mark on record in some cases."The all-time record high in Phoenix is 122 set on June 26, 1990," Pydynowski said.Temperatures are likely to top 113 in Las Vegas and 117 in Palm Springs, California, which would be the highest mark since late June 2013, when temperatures reached 117 and 122, respectively."The highest temperature on record in the United States during the month of June is 129 in Death Valley, California, on June 30, 2013," AccuWeather Meteorologist Ryan Adamson said. "That record could be in jeopardy this weekend and early next week."Death Valley, California, could touch 130 early next week. Death Valley has only reached that mark once since records have been kept. On July 10, 1913, the temperature reached 134, which is the highest on record for any calendar day at the site and happens to be the world record high temperature.During the peak of the heat, temperatures will climb into the 90s in Los Angeles. However, portions of the Inland Empire will climb past 100 and will challenge record highs.AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures will be several degrees higher than the actual temperature. The heat will have thousands flocking to Southern California beaches for relief, where temperatures will be significantly lower and patchy low clouds are likely. The buildup of heat will make it dangerous for strenuous outdoor activities during the midday and afternoon hours.People traveling through the region should make sure their vehicle can operate safely in the extreme temperatures.Motorists traveling on area highways will need to reduce their speed to minimize the chance of the engine over-heating or a tire-related failure. Driving at night might be a safer option.Heat-related delays are possible at area airports. Extreme heat can negatively affect the performance of aircraft during takeoff and low-altitude ascent. The extreme heat and associated low humidity will raise the risk of wildfire ignition and expansion. It is possible the extreme heat will continue in part of the Southwest well into next week.If you will be traveling in the region, be sure to carry plenty of water in case of a vehicular failure. Those who must work in the extreme conditions should regularly consume non-alcoholic fluids to avoid the risk of dehydration, hyperthermia and heat stroke.

Image of Saturn’s icy ring gone-awry has NASA baffled-[The Daily Buzz]-Elianna Lev-June 15, 2016-YAHOONEWS

NASA is baffled by an image sent back from its Cassini space probe, which reveals an unidentified object creating a large disruption on Saturn’s F ring. That’s the outermost discrete ring of the planet’s expansive icy rings, and lies just below the main disk. The Weather Network describes it as frequently sporting “strange patterns and structures, such as braids, clumps, ripples and jets.”In early April, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft captured something big and strange along this particular thin ring.A time-lapse animation of the mysterious blip shows the passage of three of Saturn’s moons, followed by the large disruption in the F ring. It appears to be around 700 km long, and roughly 100 km wide, or as The Weather Network describes it, the size of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, end to end, with a bit of room to spare.According to NASA, the disruption was likely created by “the interaction of a small object embedded in the ring itself and material in the core of the ring.”“Scientists sometimes refer to these features as ‘jets’,” they explain on their website..“Because these bodies are small and embedded in the F ring itself, they are difficult to spot at the resolution available to NASA’s Cassini spacecraft. Instead, their handiwork reveals their presence, and scientists use the Cassini spacecraft to study these stealthy sculptors of the F ring.”

Kerry tours Arctic Circle to see climate change impact-[Matthew Lee, The Associated Press]-June 16, 2016-YAHOONEWS

NY-ALESUND, Norway - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday visited Norway's extreme north, viewing areas where climate change has melted ice and opened new sea lanes.Trailed by staff and journalists in small Zodiac-type inflatable boats, Kerry and Norway's foreign minister motored in an Arctic scientific vessel from a research station in Ny-Alesund, the world's northernmost civilian settlement. The short cruise took Kerry and his delegation across the iceberg strewn Kongsifjorden (King's Bay Fjord), where puffins and other Arctic birds skirted the waters, to the Blomstrand Glacier. The glacier has receded significantly in the past 25 years to 30 years, with summer temperatures that can now be 8 degrees and 11 degrees higher than they once were, according to Jan-Gunnar Winther, the director of the Norwegian Polar Institute, who guided Kerry and Foreign Minister Borge Brende."It's stunning," Kerry told reporters from aboard the vessel as it idled in front of the massive ice wall. "This is the centre of change within the centre of change."As America's top diplomat, Kerry has made the health of oceans and combating the effects of climate change a priority, and he will host an international conference on oceans in September, the third such event he has organized since taking office in 2013."We're not on the pace we need to be" to reverse the effects of climate change, Kerry said. He called for renewed efforts to move away from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy."Even where there is awareness, the steps that people are taking are not big enough fast enough," Kerry said. "So, we have a huge distance to travel."Kerry was a champion of the global change agreement reached in December in Paris that seeks to hold the temperature change to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), although he said ideally the world would agree to less than 2 degrees."If we move more rapidly to the various other clean energies that already exist, we hope to be able to meet what we need to preserve a level of temperature increase that's supportable, survivable," he said. "We'll get there hopefully."After the visit to Norway's portion of the Arctic Circle, Kerry planned to see icecaps in Greenland after a stop in Copenhagen. Both trips were intended to highlight his concern about climate change and oceans ahead of the September conference. The ice-loss-driven opening of the Arctic Ocean has led to competition among several nations for its resources and access to newly available sea lanes for commercial maritime trade. U.S. officials say both Russia and China are preparing to exploit those possibilities and that the United States should take note.On his brief visit to the glacier, Kerry did not address those issues and seemed more impressed by the beauty of the bluish ice."It's stunning," Kerry said. "The power of nature and the importance of our respecting it."He then pulled out a smartphone to take pictures of the Blomstrand Glacier as his boat turned to head back to the research station.

Orlando gunman’s wife has Palestinian roots, was married before in West Bank-Noor Zahi Salman’s parents listed as being born in ‘Palestine’; police believe she knew about the plot ahead of time-By GARANCE BURKE, HOLBROOK MOHR and Mitch Weiss June 15, 2016, 5:12 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

RODEO, California (AP) — She was a sweet, pretty California girl with Palestinian roots who left an arranged marriage only to find love with a man who committed the worst mass shooting in modern US history.Little by little, details have begun to emerge about 30-year-old Noor Zahi Salman, who grew up in the small suburb of Rodeo, California, tucked in the dry hills near the oil refineries 25 miles northeast of San Francisco. Her romance with Omar Mateen — security guard, bodybuilder and devout Muslim — began online, according to a neighbor, and they were married on September 29, 2011, near her hometown, according to public records. The couple has a 3-year-old son.Early Sunday, the 29-year-old Mateen opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, leaving 49 people dead and 53 wounded.Authorities believe Mateen’s wife knew about the plot ahead of time, said an official who was briefed on the progress of the case but insisted on anonymity to discuss a continuing investigation. The official said investigators are reluctant to charge her only on the basis of possible advance knowledge of her husband’s plans.Three people identifying themselves as FBI agents visited Salman’s childhood home in Rodeo on Tuesday and spoke with her mother, said Jessie Rojas, a next-door neighbor. In Fort Pierce, Florida, where Salman and Mateen lived, Salman made a brief visit to their first-floor apartment late Monday, escorted by police and her brother-in-law. Her father-in-law said she came to retrieve clothing. She did not speak with reporters. She has otherwise been in seclusion.According to marriage documents on file in the Contra Costa County Recorder’s office, Salman was born in the United States while her parents’ birthplaces were listed as “Palestine.”It’s unclear when her parents, who served as witnesses for the wedding, came to the United States, but their naturalization papers allowing them to stay in the country were approved in 1984.No one answered the door at the Salman home Tuesday, but neighbors who know the 2004 graduate of John Swett High School in nearby Crockett said they find it hard to believe she had anything to do with the massacre.Jasbinder Chahal, who has lived across the street from Salman’s childhood home for the last 15 years, said Salman is “very nice…not the smartest, but she was beautiful.”“You know, some kids after high school, they open up the box and the world is theirs. She was inside the box, just pack it up and get married,” said Chahal.“They had a small wedding and took lots of pictures here at the house,” said Chahal. The marriage license says the ceremony took place in Hercules, California, and that an imam officiated.Of Mateen, Chahal said, “He was shorter than her and did not seem very friendly.”Chahal said Salman’s mother, Ekbal Salman, was deeply upset when she visited her Monday night and said she feared for the safety of her daughter and grandson.Salman’s parents tried to shelter their four girls as they grew up.“Noor never played in the street, and the girls were never allowed to drive,” Chahal said. The neighbor quoted Salman’s mother as saying Mateen also kept her daughter from driving, until he recently allowed her to take a test to get her driver’s license.Salman’s marriage to Mateen was her second, said Chahal. Mateen had previously been married as well. Her first marriage had been arranged in the West Bank, said Chahal, adding that the union did not work out.“He was in Chicago and they were living there, but they were not married long,” Chahal said. “They had cultural differences since she grew up here and was American.”On one of her sister’s Facebook pages — next to a family photo — there is a box with the words: “Solidarity with Gaza.”Salman rarely came home to visit after she married because Mateen would not let her, Chahal said. She quoted Salman’s mother telling her that Mateen even tried to keep the daughter from traveling home to see her father when he was sick. The younger Salman managed to scrape together the money to visit before her father died in a local hospital, Chahal said.

What charges could Omar Mateen’s wife, Noor Zahi Salman, face?-[Susanna Heller]-June 14, 2016-YAHOONEWS

The second wife of Pulse nightclub shooter Omar Mateen could face criminal charges following the release of new information that she was aware of the gunman’s plans before his attack and said she tried to stop him from carrying out his deadly mission.Details emerged Tuesday after Noor Zahi Salman, who has a 3-year-old son with Mateen, was taken in for questioning by the FBI.Salman, who was listed as Mateen’s spouse on St. Lucie County mortgage papers in 2013, was given a polygraph, CBS News reported. The network also reported that she told authorities Mateen had become radicalized over the past year.Salman told the FBI that she was with Mateen when he bought the ammunition and a holster for the weapon he would use during the deadly shooting, NBC News reported. FBI officials also told NBC News that she once drove her husband to Pulse nightclub so that he could “case” the popular gay club in Orlando. The question now is whether Salman will face charges, and if so, how severe.Yahoo News Now’s Paul Beban spoke to former southern Florida U.S. Attorney Kendall Coffey on Tuesday about the charges that Salman may now face.Coffey stressed that the degree of severity of the charges will directly correlate with the extent to which she was involved in the crime. In order for her to be charged with aiding and abetting a crime, he said, Salman must have taken some “affirmative step.”“If she drove him to get ammunition or to case the crime scene, I think that’s enough to warrant very serious charges if she had requisite knowledge of the crimes,” Coffey said.Salman and Mateen’s marital status won’t grant Salman criminal immunity — plenty of couples have been partners in crime, Coffey said.“If the authorities have evidence beyond reasonable doubt that she did everything knowing what he was going to do, then I think she will face very serious criminal charges,” he said.Tim Heaphy, a former federal prosecutor in Virginia, called Salman’s case a “gray area,” based on what we know now, but he said that if prosecutors can prove she knew Mateen had a plan to kill people and willingly helped him do so, she could be charged with murder. However, if she expressed a desire for him not to go through with the crime, as she claims she did, it’s “really unlikely” this would happen. Heaphy also said it would also be hard to prove that Salman believed Mateen would go through with his threats.“It’s pretty hard to prove that she’s doing it to facilitate the commission of the crime,” Heaphy said. “You can’t be an unwitting accomplice to a crime.”If Mateen threatened her in any way, Salman can use a “duress” defense by saying she was too frightened to alert authorities, Heaphy said, adding that Salman’s cooperation with investigators will also likely help her case.Michael E. Tigar, a professor emeritus of law at Duke University School of Law, offered a similar analysis of the possible implications of Salman’s alleged role.“The criminal law attaches liability to those who participate in the planning and carrying out of a crime with the knowledge that a crime is going to occur with the intention to further it,” he said.“There is some danger in this situation,” Tigar said. “The shooter is dead, so the prosecutors may overstate the evidence to prosecute someone who’s living.”

Survivors of massacre question Orlando police delay in storming nightclub-Dylan Stableford-Senior editor-June 15, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Some survivors of the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando are joining critics who say the three hours police spent negotiating with the gunman before storming the building was too long.“I was yelling at the cops,” Angel Colon, who was shot five times during Sunday’s attack inside the Pulse nightclub before he was dragged to safety, told Fox’s “Good Day New York.” “I didn’t understand why they didn’t go in. There is no reason why they should be standing there with all these gunshots going off. I have videos of me yelling at the cops to go in there.”Jeannette McCoy, who was with Colon at the club and able to escape before the standoff, also questioned how the police handled the situation.“Why couldn’t we have taken care of this much earlier? There were people in there bleeding to death,” McCoy told the New York affiliate. “A part of me puts a sense of blame on them. I’m sorry, but I was there. They could have done something.”The gunman, 29-year-old Omar Mateen, opened fire inside the club shortly after 2 a.m., authorities and witnesses say. An off-duty police officer who was working as a security guard just outside Pulse’s entrance confronted Mateen and exchanged gunfire, and the shooter ran back inside, holing up in a bathroom, where police say he was holding several hostages.Shooting at Pulse Nightclub on S Orange. Multiple injuries. Stay away from area. pic.twitter.com/5Di2mc6XUY— Orlando Police (@OrlandoPolice) June 12, 2016-But more than three hours passed before a SWAT team successfully breached the wall of the club with an armored vehicle, engaged Mateen in a shootout as he tried to flee and killed him, putting an end to a massacre that left 49 dead and 53 wounded — the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.Several experts said the delay may have contributed to the death toll.“Action beats inaction 100 percent of the time,” Chris Grollnek, an active-shooter expert and a retired police officer and SWAT team member, told the Associated Press. “When we see SWAT teams respond and not making entry [it] creates victims. Period. End of story.”Grollnek told the New York Daily News that the police response in Orlando “was a catastrophic failure.”“Police are trained that if there’s an active shooter in progress, you go in and confront the shooter at any risk,” he said. “When an active shooter is shooting, you go in and shoot the shooter.”On Monday, Orlando Police Chief John Mina defended the decision to wait, saying they believed Mateen — who called 911 several times during the standoff — had explosives inside.Scott Reitz, a retired Los Angeles police SWAT team firearms and tactics instructor, told LA Weekly that Mina made the right call.“If an individual goes in and rigs the place with explosives and you breach it, everybody gets blown to bits,” Reitz told LA Weekly. “You inadvertently set off an IED.”“The train of thought is, ‘If he’s calling, maybe we can negotiate. Maybe we can get him to surrender,‘” Reitz continued.Crisis negotiators said Mateen was calm when they spoke with him, but when he asserted his intent to kill more people, Mina decided to go in.“We believed further loss of life was imminent,” Mina said. “It was a hard decision to make, but it was the right decision. Our No. 1 priority is on saving lives, and it was the right decision to make.”Ed Allen, training program manager at the National Tactical Officers Association, said it was a textbook case.“If there is a window of opportunity for us to resolve the situation peacefully, we’ll take advantage of it,” Allen told the New York Times. “But when the suspect escalates the level of violence, we are forced to intervene.”But Louis R. Anemone, a former chief of department for the NYPD, told the newspaper the situation in Orlando wasn’t so clear.“Is it an active shooting case or a hostage case? It’s a very fine line,” Anemone said. “What are the facts initially? If there were shots being fired inside when the police arrived, they had a moral obligation to go in.”Orlando police first tried to breach an exterior wall with an explosive device, but the hole wasn’t big enough, Mina said. So a BearCat was used to punch a 2-by-3-foot hole in the wall about 2 feet off the ground.“We were able to rescue dozens and dozens of people who came out of that wall,” Mina said. “The suspect came out of that hole himself with a handgun and a long gun and engaged in a gun battle with officers where he was ultimately killed.”“If you waited and he didn’t kill more people, it was the right call,” Reitz said.Mina, though, said it was possible that some victims may have been killed by officers during the shootout with Mateen.“That’s all part of the investigation,” Mina said. “But I will say when our SWAT officers, about eight or nine officers, opened fire, the backdrop was a concrete wall and they were being fired upon.”

Dalai Lama: Those Who Cause Bloodshed Are Not “Genuine” Practitioners of Islam-[Foreign Policy Magazine]-Megan Alpert-June 13, 2016-YAHOONEWS

The days after a mass shooting in the United States have become a national ritual of helpless grief and anger. On Monday, the Dalai Lama joined the conversation by urging a Washington audience to build a world without violence — a topic that is even more prescient after early Sunday’s massacre in Orlando, Florida, which killed 50 people celebrating LGBT pride in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. The Dalai Lama believes that a lasting peace is best achieved by empowering young people. As part of that, he told his audience at the U.S. Institute of Peace, people must approach and befriend others from different backgrounds and religions, and voiced skepticism about the effects of prayer if it is not coupled with “serious action.”Asked about the Orlando shootings, the Dalai Lama said when people create bloodshed they are “no longer a genuine practitioner of Islam.” He added, “The very meaning of jihad is not harming others, but to combat your own destructive emotion.”He called the “sad event” in Orlando a symptom of a larger problem of a “self-centered attitude” that creates a “lack of a sense of oneness of human brothers and sisters.”But he also criticized U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, saying many problems in the region could be traced to the U.S. response to the 9/11 terror attacks. “American military power,” he said, “easily can crush. But American military power cannot change others’ mind or emotion.”In May, the Tibetan Buddhist leader held a conference in Dharamsala with 28 youth leaders from areas of conflict or violence around the world. Soukaina Hamia, one of the youth leaders who was there, has for years sought to change the minds of vulnerable youth in Morocco to prevent them from turning to terrorism. After terrorist bombings in Casablanca in 2003 and 2007, she began working at a new cultural center in Sidi Moumen, the city’s largest slum, and where all of the attackers in the two blasts had lived.Hamia, who is now the deputy director of the center, saw a connection between the lack of opportunities for youth and terrorist acts. Before her center opened, vulnerable youth in Sid Moumen had no outlet to express themselves. “They don’t have a sense of belonging, that they are citizens, that they are Moroccans, so it was their way to maybe make the world hear them,” she told Foreign Policy. When events like the Orlando shootings happen, she tries to process the events with the youth at her center, which she said can be difficult for people from conservative backgrounds who are not used to thinking or talking about LGBT people’s rights.“What we do is we focus more on the human factor,” she said. “People use religion as a pretext to justify their acts, but [violence] it is an act against religion.”Speaking of the Orlando shootings, she added: “It doesn’t matter if you are Muslim or not, this is an act against humanity.”This story has been updated.

Next war with Hamas must be Israel’s last, top defense official says-Hinting at new Gaza strategy after 3 conflicts in 7 years, senior source says ‘war of attrition is not an option’-By Raoul Wootliff June 15, 2016, 5:43 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A senior Defense Ministry official said Wednesday that the next round of fighting in the Gaza Strip against the Hamas terror group must be the last.“A war of attrition is not an option. The next confrontation must be the last in terms of Hamas’s regime,” the unnamed official told Israeli reporters at a briefing.Israel has arguably been involved in a war of attrition against Hamas for years, with each side slowly grinding away at the other. With strict border control and occasional large-scale operations, Israel works to deplete Hamas’s supply of weapons and fighters. Meanwhile Hamas, with rockets and “terror tunnels,” hopes to diminish Israeli resolve. In the IDF’s last foray into the Gaza Strip, in a 50-day 2014 conflict known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge, the goal was not to destroy Hamas but to deliver a “meaningful blow” to the terror organization and its tunnel network, according to the army’s own account.Israel previously launched operations in Gaza in December 2008 and November 2012.The official stressed that Israel does not seek another war, but says “Hamas is a growing threat.”“Their goal is destroying the State of Israel,” he added. In his first meeting with senior generals after appointed as defense minister last month, Avigdor Liberman hinted at a new strategy to deal with Hamas, suggesting he would not allow continued military conflicts in Gaza.“We don’t have the luxury of conducting drawn-out wars of attrition,” Liberman told the Israel Defense Forces’ General Staff on his first day of the job.The defense official also lashed out at Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, describing him as “the number one problem for Israel,” and saying he was not interested in bringing abut a peace agreement.“Abu Mazen isn’t interested in progressing anywhere or beginning any process [towards peace],” he said. “That man doesn’t have the public support or the will to reach any arrangement or agreement.”Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

PM rejects ‘panic’ over reported cut in US missile defense aid-Opposition slams Netanyahu after White House rejects Congress’s bid to up funding; Netanyahu insists that budget will increase-By Raphael Ahren and Rebecca Shimoni Stoil June 15, 2016, 3:00 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday dismissed widespread “panic” over reports implying the US government is refusing to increase financial aid for Israeli missile defense. While not denying the reports, which prompted opposition politicians to harshly criticize Netanyahu, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office insisted that American aid for missile defense system protecting Israel would ultimately be increased rather than cut.On Tuesday, the White House said it opposed a move by the House of Representatives to increase funding for Israeli missile defense procurement by an additional $455 million above the administration’s budget request for the 2017 fiscal year.Due to “multiple misleading reports,” the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday issued a statement insisting “there is no cut in US aid.” Rather, there is an “internal debate” between Congress and the White House over the size of the annual increase to the American missile defense program.Netanyahu is seeking to anchor this additional aid as a part of his ongoing negotiations over the extension of an US-Israel memorandum of understanding, which regulates US military aid to Israel, the statement noted.“Not only will the security assistance for missile defense not be cut, it will be increased,” it said.On Wednesday morning, the Israeli opposition was quick to blame Netanyahu’s well-publicized spats with US President Barack Obama for the White House’s position on additional funding for missile defense assistance.“American aid is essential for protecting our citizens, and now, because of the prime minister’s ego games, we’re losing a critical part of it,” opposition leader Isaac Herzog (Zionist Union) wrote on his Facebook page.He accused the prime minister of “arrogance and irresponsibility” in his dealings with the Obama administration. “If Israel will remain without air defense system in the next war, we can already now set up an inquiry into how Netanyahu makes decisions about national security,” he said.MK Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) called on Jerusalem not to wait for the upcoming US elections but to sign an agreement over military aid with the current administration in order to avoid taking any risks.“We have to improve our relations with the US. The deterioration of ties leads to a situation in which issues that we used to be able to sort out in close discussions and negotiations among friends have become raucous public debates on matters critical to the State of Israel,” he said. The prime minister flatly rejected these statements. “Attempts to turn the dialogue with the US into a domestic Israeli political tool are inappropriate, and all expressions of panic are unwarranted,” his office said in its statement. In a letter to Congress, the Obama administration had listed its numerous objections to the House’s version of the defense appropriations bill for the coming fiscal year. The administration has criticized the bill for budgetary sleight of hand, complaining that it redirects funds from the overseas operations war chest toward other purposes in an effort to meet spending targets. In the letter, the administration said the legislation “fails to provide our troops with the resources needed to keep our nation safe.”The objection to increased aid to Israel came at the same time that the administration criticized “the reduction of $324 million from the FY 2017 Budget request for US ballistic missile defense programs.”Without explicitly drawing parallels, the letter noted that “furthermore, the Administration opposes the addition of $455 million above the FY 2017 Budget request for Israeli missile defense procurement and cooperative development programs.” The administration had initially requested $103.835 million for Israeli cooperative programs. The US provides funds for Israel’s missile weapons systems separately from the annual $3.1 billion in military financing it gives Jerusalem to purchase weapons from the US.In 2014, Congress increased US funding for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system to $351 million for the fiscal year 2015, from $235 million the previous year. The Iron Dome missile defense system successfully intercepted hundreds of Hamas rockets during last summer’s war in Gaza. After the 2014 conflict, funding was bolstered by another $225 million to assist Israel in replenishing its Iron Dome missile stockpile.Additionally, there was US funding for joint development of anti-missile systems Arrow III and David’s Sling. In the parallel to the National Defense Authorization Bill passed by the House, the Senate Tuesday authorized a total of $600.8 million in anti-missile defense programs for Israel, more than quadrupling the administration’s requested funding for Israeli missile defense.Unlike the House version, the Senate version, which enjoyed broad enough Democratic support to defeat a presidential veto, did not subsidize additional spending through the Overseas Contingency Operations war account. The House and Senate will now take their different versions of the defense spending measures to conference, where they will hammer out a final compromise version of each bill. The process this year is expected to be time-consuming given the gaps in the way that the House and Senate versions propose to fund defense spending.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Knesset members to resume Temple Mount visits-After eight-month ban, police propose allowing Muslim lawmakers to return in early July, Jewish MKs the following week-By Times of Israel staff June 13, 2016, 11:16 pm

An eight-month ban on political leaders visiting the Temple Mount is likely to be lifted by the end of June. The Knesset Ethics Committee is set to vote Tuesday on ending the restriction it imposed on lawmakers last October amid escalating violence over the flashpoint Jerusalem holy site, including Palestinian terror attacks against Israelis and violent confrontations between security forces and Palestinians in the West Bank. The move also follows a declaration last month by several MKs from the Arab Joint List that they would visit the Temple Mount during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which began June 6, whether or not the ban remained in force. The announcement led to a meeting two weeks ago in Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein’s office, attended by Israel Police Commissioner Roni Alsheich and Jerusalem Police chief Yoram Halevy, at which the police officials said they no longer opposed such visits, citing an updated intelligence assessment indicating that politicians’ visits to the holy sites on the Mount were not likely to result in renewed violence. In a compromise proposed by police, Muslim lawmakers would be allowed to renew their visits to the site in the last week of Ramadan — corresponding to the first week of July — and Jewish lawmakers would be allowed to renew their visits the following week.A Knesset official told the Walla news site that the continued lifting of the ban would depend on police assessments of the potential fallout from such visits. The news was welcomed Monday by Likud MK Yehudah Glick, a controversial activist who has campaigned for allowing Jewish prayer on the Mount. Under a status quo agreement in force since Israel captured the Mount — Judaism’s holiest site and the third holiest place in Islam — in the 1967 Six Day War, Jews are allowed to visit but not pray there. On Twitter, Glick said he “calls on all parties to join together to transform the place into a world center for peace, reconciliation and coexistence.”

US envoy to Israel: We will fight ‘pernicious’ BDS efforts-Washington’s policy is to ‘vigorously oppose and counter such measures,’ Dan Shapiro tells Herzliya Conference-By Times of Israel staff June 15, 2016, 7:33 pm

The “pernicious” BDS campaign against Israel runs against American interests, and some of its supporters “have an anti-Israel, and in some cases even anti-Semitic, agenda,” Washington’s ambassador to Israel said Wednesday.Ambassador Dan Shapiro spoke out against the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement in his speech to the annual Herzliya Conference, saying that while those who promote it have the right to do so, “no one should have any doubt that the policy of the US government is to vigorously oppose and counter such initiatives.”The US, having been subjected to the Arab oil embargo in the 1970s, knows what it’s like, he said, and Washington sided with Israel then, too.“Others may advocate boycotting Israel — but we are doing the exact opposite,” he told the conference. “We are actively seeking to deepen our economic partnership with Israel. We encourage American companies to invest in Israel, and then celebrate their successes. We are recruiting Israeli businesses to invest in the United-States.”-Despite American opposition to the BDS movement, Shapiro said substantive progress in peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians would better combat “those who advocate isolation.“True supporters of BDS have an anti-Israel, and in some cases even anti-Semitic, agenda, independent of efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” he said. “But we must also reach those who support a two-state solution, but who might be tempted by the misguided arguments of the BDS movement.”New York Governor Andrew Cuomo last week signed an executive order banning New York state agencies and departments from investing in companies or groups that, as a policy, promote or engage in boycotts, divestment or sanctions against Israel. The order also requires the state to draw up a public list of companies that engage in or promote BDS.Cuomo’s order stands out, however, as it enacts opposition to BDS in the fourth-most populous state — and the home to the largest number of Jews in the country. And it places Cuomo, a prominent governor and national figure, at the center of the American debate over Israel.JTA contributed to this report.

Intelligence chief warns of growing gaps between Israel, neighbors-At Herzliya Conference, Maj. Gen. Herzi Halevy describes a strong, powerful Israel in an unstable Middle East; warns of potential conflict with Hezbollah, Hamas-By Judah Ari Gross June 15, 2016, 1:15 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Since the Arab Spring in 2011, Israel has gotten stronger, more stable and wealthier than its neighbors. But that’s not necessarily something to be proud of — it’s something that should be worrisome, according to Military Intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Herzi Halevy. In a speech Wednesday at this year’s Herzliya Conference, Halevy introduced a portmanteau to describe a dynamic Middle East: mishtarkev, which he said was made up of the Hebrew words for improve, mishtaper, and complex, murkav. His speech gave a general overview of the region, but did not reveal any information not previously released by the Israel Defense Forces. He touched on the Syrian civil war, Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza, terror in the West Bank and the Islamic State group. Each of these threats has existed for years, but one area of concern Halevy touched on was the growing disparity between Israel and its neighbors. On the one hand, Israel’s status as a strong, stable democracy in the Middle East is something that should be treasured and not forgotten.“Maybe because of the Holocaust we carry with us a feeling of persecution,” he said. “But around us, we’re seen as a very strong, aggressive, unexpected and capable figure. That’s something important for us to preserve.”But on the other hand, though Israel may be stable, its neighbors are not. And that does not bode well for the Jewish state. Economic strife can give rise to religious extremism and terrorism, the Military Intelligence chief warned.“There’s a gap between us and everyone around us, and that gap is growing,” Halevy said.“If you look at per capita gross domestic product, in Israel we’re approaching NIS 40,000 ($10,300). Around us there are countries, that [our GDP] is five times greater than theirs, seven times greater, 10 times and even 20 times greater,” Halevy said.“This shouldn’t make us proud, it should make us worried,” he said. “When your neighborhood deteriorates, the value of your home does not go up.”Regarding terror not only in Israel, but around the world, Halevy pointed to the internet and other technologies that make it easier for individuals to carry out attacks without having to join extremist organizations.“You don’t have to own a big hotel chain to rent out a room on Airbnb,” Halevy said, referring to the popular home rental website. “You also don’t need to belong to a large terror organization to carry out a terror attack.”As could be seen in the attack in Orlando, Tel Aviv, Paris, Turkey and elsewhere around the world, the Islamic State is rapidly becoming a dominant force in international terrorism, with each attack inspiring the next one, Halevy said. The Islamic State is the “bad in the world, the Amalek of 2016,” he said, using the name of a biblical tribe that is seen as the epitome of evil.-The Third Lebanon War-On Israel’s borders, Halevy pointed to situations that are currently stable, but are liable to deteriorate quickly. In the south, Hamas for now is not interested in another round of conflict with Israel after the 2014 Gaza war, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge, he said, “but next month that could be different.”Halevy put particular emphasis on the threat of Hezbollah in Lebanon, as Israel prepares to mark 10 years since the Second Lebanon War next month.Hezbollah is believed to have an arsenal of more than 100,000 missiles and rockets, along with weapons systems “that they never had before,” Halevy said. The intelligence chief wouldn’t say the next round of violence with the Iran-backed terror group would result in mass casualties among Israel’s civilian population, but came close.“In the Yom Kippur War, we had one person killed on the home front from a Syrian missile. The situation in the next conflict will be completely different,” he said.Halevy revealed how close Israel came to experiencing that conflict last year, when Hezbollah fired seven anti-tank missiles at IDF troops on the northern border, killing two.“I don’t think Hezbollah realized the full potential for casualties there,” he said.If Hezbollah had succeeded in killing the total possible number of soldiers, Halevy said, “our response would have been different. Then their response would have been different. And maybe today on the radio they would be talking about the Third Lebanon War with Hezbollah and not just the second.”Though the IDF has no current plans to attack Hezbollah, the army has never been more prepared, he said.“If our enemies knew our capabilities and our intelligence, they would spare themselves the next conflict,” Halevy said.“I’m going to say this with all due caution, but there has never been an army that knows as much about its enemy as we know about Hezbollah,” the intelligence chief said.“But still, the next war will not be simple, it will not be easy,” he said.-Iran vs. the ‘pragmatic Sunnis’-Halevy pointed to two competing groups in the Muslim world: the Shiite Iran, which despite its “legitimate” status in the wake of last year’s Iran nuclear deal continues to fund attacks on Israel, and the “pragmatic” Sunni nations led by Saudi Arabia, whose interests have increasingly begun to align with Israel.Throughout the Middle East, both Iran and Saudi Arabia have lots of fingers in lots of pots. The two countries have direct involvement in the Yemenite and Syrian civil wars.In Syria, Iran has already lost “250 people, and that’s just their fighters from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. That’s not counting the Shiite militias that are managed by Iran,” he said.Though the threat of a nuclear Iran has been put off for a few years in light of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) signed last year, the Islamic Republic continues to develop its nuclear program — albeit at a dramatically slower rate — only now it has “international legitimacy” to do so, Halevy said. Now that Iran has been brought to the bargaining table, the country has also gained diplomatic legitimacy, he said. All this, despite the fact that it continues to call for Israel’s destruction and gives the military wings of Hamas, Hezbollah and the Islamic Jihad “60 percent of their budgets,” Halevy said.Iran has also taken the lead on the cyber warfare front against Israel, he said, carrying out digital attacks themselves and also providing training to Hezbollah to do the same.On the other side, he said, are the “pragmatic Sunnis” — mostly the Gulf states — who are leading the fight against Iran.Saudi Arabia today is “not the same Saudi Arabia we saw a year and a half ago,” Halevy said.“Saudi Arabia is more proactive, trying to lead the Sunni camp in the Middle East. It’s a country that has perhaps stabilized and gotten stronger in its fight against Iran,” he said.“Some of the interests of the pragmatic Sunni countries are getting closer to our interests,” Halevy said. “This is an interesting development, and there is an opportunity in it.”

Khaled Mashaal to step down as Hamas leader — report-Political chief said to forgo reelection bid in upcoming leadership vote-By Dov Lieber June 15, 2016, 8:58 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Hamas’s political chief, Khaled Mashaal, will not try to retain his office in the upcoming elections for the leadership of the terror group, which rules Gaza, Arab media reported on Tuesday. The London-based Arabic newspaper Rai Alyoum reported Tuesday that Mashaal will not run in the next elections, scheduled to take place by the end of the year. Unlike the last elections in 2013, when the Hamas leader claimed he would retire but then ran in the elections, this time the decision is final, the report said.He will publicly announce his decision before preparations for the elections begin, the report said.Mashaal, 56, is a veteran politician with close ties to regional powers Qatar, Egypt and Turkey. He has been key to Hamas’s attempts to break out of political isolation following its violent takeover of Gaza in 2007. He has led the movement since 1996.In 2013, Mashaal ran unopposed and was reelected by a majority in the movement’s decision-making Shura Council, which is believed to have about 60 members.Still, he has slowly been losing power within the terror group, as a rift between Hamas’s military wing and political leaders continues to deepen.Mashaal, a supporter of violent campaigns against the Jewish state, has suggested he could accept a Palestinian state alongside Israel, but has not said if such a state would end the conflict or only be an interim step to an Islamic state in all of historic Palestine, including what is now Israel.Possible successors to Mashaal include Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s former prime minister; Mahmoud al-Zahar, one of the co-founders of the movement; and Moussa Abu Marzouk, who is Mashaal’s deputy and held the post before 1996.The head of Hamas’s political bureau has traditionally been someone of high political standing living outside of Gaza, especially as traveling in and out of the Strip is difficult. The Rai Alyoum report speculated that if that tradition were to continue, Marzouk, who currently lives in Cairo, has the best chance of taking over. Additionally, the paper wrote, Marzouk’s deep connections with Cairo are very important to Hamas, which has been working tirelessly to repair its relations with the powerful Arab country following the downfall of the Muslim Brotherhood from power in 2013. The Muslim Brotherhood is the movement’s spiritual and formal political benefactor. The Gaza-based Yahya Sinwar, a high-ranking Hamas operative with deep ties to the group’s military wing, is another possible contender to take the reigns of leadership.Hamas has four components — activists in Gaza, the West Bank and in exile, and members imprisoned by Israel. Each of the four groups chooses local leaders as well as delegates to the Shura Council.

Abbas: Israel’s ‘daily attacks’ on Al-Aqsa a ‘red line’-Palestinian Authority president says ‘no compromise’ possible at the holy site-By Dov Lieber June 13, 2016, 10:35 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas asserted on Sunday night that Israel and “its settlers” are committing daily “attacks and violations” at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem, which he said constitute a “red line.”The remarks came during a visit to Ramallah by former Palestinian guards at the holy site, as well as by the Fatah movement’s secretary in Jerusalem, Adnan Ghaith, the official PA news agency Wafa reported.Abbas said the Al-Aqsa guards play a “great role in in defending our holy sites” from the “abusive and violating measures taken by the occupation.”“The blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque is a red line and we will not accept any infringement on it,” he added. The Temple Mount, on which the Al-Aqsa Mosque is located, is sanctified by Jews as the place where the Jewish temples stood in biblical times.Tensions at the tinderbox site have been one of the main catalysts for the current round of Palestinian violence in Israel and the West Bank, in which 33 Israelis and three foreign nationals have been killed since October. Some 200 Palestinians have also been killed, about two-thirds of them while attacking Israelis and the rest during clashes with troops, according to the Israeli army. The Palestinian leadership has long accused Israel of trying to change the status quo on the Temple Mount, an accusation Israel vehemently denies. In early march, Abbas accused Israel of attempting to “judaize” the Temple Mount. And in November, he said he had cautioned against “violations committed by the settlers and extremists under the protection of the Israeli occupying forces against the sanctity of Christian and Muslim holy places in Jerusalem, particularly aimed at changing the historic status quo at Al-Haram Al-Sharif [the Temple Mount] and Al-Aqsa Mosque that existed before the year 1967 and thereafter.”In one well-known comment made in September 2015 that was later criticized by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Abbas said Jews were sullying the Temple Mount “with their filthy feet.”Times of Israel staff contributed to this report

Top diplomat: Ties with Arab states are secret due to ‘sensitivity’-Palestinian issue is ‘pretty close to the bottom’ of agenda for both Israelis and Arabs, Dore Gold says-By Raphael Ahren June 15, 2016, 6:04 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Israel’s budding ties with the Arab world need to remain clandestine to respect the Arab public’s “sensitivities,” Foreign Ministry Director-General Dore Gold said Wednesday. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is “pretty close to the bottom” of the agendas of both Israelis and the Arab world, Gold said, reiterating that — according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “strategy” — an Israeli rapprochement with Sunni Arab states will take place before a peace agreement with the Palestinians can be reached.Speaking at the annual Herzliya Conference, the country’s top diplomat surmised that every Israeli would love to see Israeli reporters “walking in an Arab capital, where Israelis never ventured before.”“It’s a great picture, it’s a great story,” he added, recalling the excitement of seeing Israeli journalist first report from Cairo and Amman, after Israel signed peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan in 1979 and 1994 respectively.“It is very gratifying to get that kind of coverage. But we have to be very careful with our Arab neighbors. They have sensitivities. They have populations which may not always look favorably upon that coverage,” added Gold, who has conducted a number of meetings with officials from Arab states with which Israel has no formal relations.“And so rather than run to tell your friends where you’ve been and put it in the newspaper, we have to be extremely cautious and build these relationships piece by piece, and not necessarily put it out in public,” he said.Critics often admonish the government for the frozen peace process, Gold noted, saying that this was not necessarily the case in reality.“Under the ice there is a lot of hot water moving,” he said. “And we hope that we will be able to use the new relations in the Arab world, combined with our new relations in Asia and Africa, to build a better situation for our relations between us and our Palestinian neighbors.”This is Netanyahu’s approach, and is one which he tries to implement, Gold said. “That is the strategy. Twenty, thirty years ago everyone said, solve the Palestinian issue and you’ll have peace with the Arab world. An increasingly we are becoming convinced: it’s the exact opposite. It’s a different order we have to create. And that’s what we’re going to do.”Gold said that while he could not promise that this approach would yield immediate results, Israel would make every effort to seize the opportunity.“I can guarantee when we see a great strategic moment emerging, when the planets are lined up in a way they have never been before since the modern Middle East emerged after World War II, we will exploit every effort, we will turn over every rock, to make sure that we bring a safer Middle East to the State of Israel,” he said.Gold recounted a recent encounter with a senior diplomat from an unnamed Arab country, in which the two men compared notes. To his surprise, Gold found that they had “identical” worries and concerns. The urgent establishment of a Palestinian state did not feature prominently on the men’s list of talking points, Gold recalled.“I am not trying to play football with the Palestinian issue but in fact on both papers the Palestinian issue was not the number one issue. It was pretty close to the bottom,” he said.“That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try and find ways of getting a breakthrough with our Palestinian neighbors. We work on that. But we have to realize that that isn’t any longer the currency on which you build ties in much of the Sunni Arab world. Although the Palestinian issue is important in public opinion.”

In first, Israel elected to head a permanent UN committee-Danny Danon hails ‘historic achievement,’ will chair General Assembly’s legal panel, which also deals with counter-terrorism-By Raphael Ahren June 13, 2016, 10:04 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

For the first time ever, Israel was elected to head a permanent committee at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, despite intense efforts by Arab and Muslim states to stop the nomination. In a secret ballot Monday in New York, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon was elected chairman of the GA’s Sixth Committee, which deals with legal issues.“This is a historic achievement for the State of Israel. We broke the glass ceiling: Despite the opposition of many countries, including Iran and others that tried to prevent the vote, we managed to be elected for the first time to head a committee at the UN,” Danon said.In the past, Israeli diplomats have presided over other, less prestigious committees at the UN and even co-chaired the GA, but never headed one of the GA’s six main committees. “The Sixth Committee is the primary forum for the consideration of legal questions in the General Assembly,” according to the UN.Among the issues it is expected to deal with at this fall’s GA are “measures to eliminate international terrorism,” and “the rule of law at the national and international levels.”“One of Ambassador Danon’s first tasks in his new position will be to further the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism,” the Israeli delegation to the UN in New York said in a press release.“Israel is a world leader in international law and in fighting terrorism. We are pleased to have the opportunity to share our knowledge with the countries of the world,” Danon said.He was nominated for the job by the Western European and Others Group in the UN, whose turn it was to pick a chairman for the committee. Israel has been a temporary member of the Western European and Others Group since 2000 and joined permanently in December 2013.The chairmanships of the GA main committees are allocated on a rotational basis and are usually confirmed without a vote. In this case, however, Yemen, on behalf of the Arab Group, challenged Israel’s nomination and asked for a vote. In a secret ballot Monday, in which all 193 UN member states could vote, Israel was elected. Congratulations immediately started pouring in from Western states that supported Jerusalem’s bid.Mazel tov, @IsraelinUN! @NorwayUN https://t.co/1mlbTjcjLv-— (((NorwayinIsrael))) (@NorwayinIsrael) June 13, 2016-Congrats @IsraelinUN !! https://t.co/0TTkuT8G9c— Canada in Israel (@CanEmbIsrael) June 13, 2016-The Palestinians had started protesting Israel’s nomination last week. “It is ironic that Israel, a state that continues to breach international law and conventions, international humanitarian law and countless UN resolutions, is being nominated to head a legal committee that aims to promote international law and protect basic human rights and freedoms,” Hanan Ashrawi, a top Palestine Liberation Organization official, said Wednesday.By nominating Israel, the West European and Other Group, which includes Australia and New Zealand, was “making a mockery of the international legal system and rewarding Israel for its flagrant violations of international law and acts of collective punishment and violence,” Ashrawi added. On Sunday, the Arab League convened diplomats from the countries planning to nominate Israel for the Sixth Committee chairmanship and informed them of the Arab world’s displeasure with the move. It does not make sense for Israel to chair the GA’s legal committee as long as the country continues to violate the Palestinians’ basic rights, Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby told the Western diplomats. The Hamas terrorist organization slammed Israel’s nomination as “shameful and disrespectful to UN rules and bylaws,” with the group’s spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri calling on the UN to retract the “catastrophic” move.“This nomination encourages the occupation to continue its terrorist policies against the Palestinian people,” he stated in a press release.Other players also took steps to fight Israel’s nomination, such as the Non-Aligned Movement. Iran, for instance, tried to send a letter to UN member states urging them to reject the Israeli candidacy. “The Iranian letter was not published and their attempt failed,” according to the Israeli UN delegation, which credited itself and the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem for a “lengthy and difficult diplomatic battle” to ensure the successful vote.“We will not allow dictatorships and anti-Israel countries to harm our standing in the international community. Those who tried to block our appointment would be well advised to take note of the jurisdiction of this committee, as they have much to learn about international law,” Danon declared. The Palestinians’ “hysterical” reaction to Israel’s nomination was nothing new, Daniel Meron, who heads the Foreign Ministry’s UN and international organizations division, told The Times of Israel on Monday.“Time after time, whenever Israel comes up with a candidate for a post or an initiative, there is an attempt by the Arab Group to challenge Israel,” he said. Even when Israel proposes moves to help advance developing countries, the Arabs will always try to sabotage it, he added.“It is ridiculous behavior. It singles them out, not Israel.”

Someone likely sparked the Fort McMurray wildfire, but was it a crime? RCMP ask-[CBC]-June 14, 2016-YAHOONEWS

The Fort McMurray wildfire MWF-009, which came to be known across Canada as "The Beast," was not ignited by a lightning strike, and police are now asking for the public's help to determine whether it was the result of a criminal offence.Provincial wildfire investigators have established that the fire was most likely the result of "human activity."The fire was first sighted about 15 kilometres southwest of Fort McMurray by an airborne forestry crew on May 1.Over the next two days, the wildfire grew rapidly. On May 3, pushed by high winds and fuelled by tinder-dry conditions, the fire raged into the city itself and forced more than 80,000 residents to flee.RCMP focusing on Horse River Trail system-Police have not yet determined how the fire started, but want to speak with anyone who was in the Horse River Trail system between April 29 and May 5.Cpl. Hal Turnbull said this area is popular with hikers and ATV riders."It's not an area that's remote and isolated, it's an area that's frequently accessed by the individuals who reside in and around the Fort McMurray area," Turnbull said.Because of the unique scope and magnitude of the fire, Turnbull said, it's only natural that police would investigate the cause. This investigation needs to be done now, he said, before any physical evidence may be lost."It's not that we have any suspicions or beliefs that there was criminal activity, it's just a natural cause that people will say, 'Have you looked at whether arson was a factor? Or whether any criminal activity may have occurred in the area which would have caused the fire?' " Turnbull said."At the end of the day, we want to be able to say, 'Yes, we did so in a timely fashion, and here are the results of our investigation.'"Anyone with information is asked to call the RCMP's dedicated toll-free wildfire investigation phone line at 1-844-620-9826.The fire destroyed some 2,400 buildings in Fort McMurray. In the six weeks since it started, the fire has moved north and east of the city, and in recent days has shown little growth. It is now more than 80 per cent contained. The fire has burned about 590,000 hectares and has a perimeter of about 1,000 kilometres.

Canada considers European troop commitment as CSIS warns Russia is 'mobilizing for war'-[CBC]-June 14, 2016-YAHOONEWS

The Trudeau government is considering a request to commit hundreds of troops to eastern Europe and take part command of a new NATO force being assembled to deter Russian aggression.Canada’s participation in the Baltic operation was discussed Tuesday by the military alliance’s defence ministers, including Canada's Harjit Sajjan, at a meeting in Brussels. This comes just days after the Canadian Security Intelligence Service quietly released an open-sourced global security analysis warning, among other things, that the hard-line policies of Russian President Vladimir Putin are becoming more deeply entrenched and that Moscow is retooling its military for a fight. The U.S., Britain and Germany publicly committed to the force on Tuesday, but federal sources said that while Canada has not yet made a decision, an answer could come soon and that Canada "supports what NATO is doing in the region.“Up to 4,000 troops are envisioned for the force, but the number coming from Canada, along with the type of equipment and vehicles that would be involved, is still being assessed. The federal cabinet is expected to meet again on Wednesday but it is unclear whether the NATO request is on the agenda. At the moment, just under 200 Canadian troops are involved in a massive drill — Exercise Anakonda — alongside Polish, Turkish and American forces near a base in Poland. The Harper government committed Canada to a regular rotation of ground forces for exercises under the NATO’s Operation Reassurance banner following Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea. But the new proposal goes a step further with the creation of four battalions, which would rotate through bases in eastern Europe and the Baltics, and be on standby for emergencies. The contingent would be backed by NATO’s highly mobile, 40,000-strong rapid reaction force.Baltic states could be overrun-Federal sources said Tuesday that it’s not been decided where Canadian troops might be based, although published reports in Europe, quoting diplomatic sources, offered up two possible locations Poland or Latvia. The Rand Corporation, a non-partisan U.S. think-tank, released a report last winter suggesting the proposed NATO force would simply be a speed bump for the Russian army should fighting take place. It said the Baltic states — Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania — could conceivably be overrun with 60 hours unless the West was willing to station several, heavily armoured brigades in the tiny nations.Even before the contingent is finalized, political leaders in the Baltics have privately complained it is too small, according to published reports in Europe. The request by NATO and the U.S. to fill one of the four slots took some in Ottawa by surprise, where the notion wasn’t on the radar as little as two months ago, said one source with knowledge of the file.It is expected the government will signal its intentions before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau goes to the NATO leaders summit in Warsaw next month. The potential commitment is unfolding against the backdrop of an increasingly unpredictable Russian regime, said a security analysis released last week by the Canada’s spy agency.-Russia ‘mobilizing for war' -The report is a distillation of open source academic research and evaluations and not based on internal CSIS assessments. It does however use stark language, and warned decision-makers not to treat Putin’s rearmament drive lightly."Russia is not modernizing its military primarily to extend its capacity to pursue hybrid warfare,” the 104 page report said, referring to the Kremlin’s use of irregular tactics to take over Crimea. “It is modernizing conventional military capability on a large scale; the state is mobilizing for war.”The West has primarily responded to the annexation and Moscow’s support of separatists in eastern Ukraine with economic sanctions. The prevailing wisdom is that fiscal pain will bring Putin around, but the report dismissed that notion, saying two years after war erupted in Ukraine, the Kremlin “appears to be coherent, durable and united” at the centre.“Western assessments that Russia is vulnerable to economic collapse and disruptive internal discontent are exaggerated,” said the assessment, titled 2018 Security Outlook.“Russia is adapting to adversity; the economy is deliberately tilted to security rather than economic freedom.”

Qatar to Deport Dutch Woman Convicted of Adultery After Reporting Rape-[Time]-Amanda Calvo-June 14, 2016-YAHOONEWS

A Dutch tourist, convicted by a Qatari court of having extramarital sex after she reported being drugged and raped in Doha, is to be deported to the Netherlands. The 22-year-old woman, who was on vacation in the Gulf state, has spent the past three months in custody after first notifying local police of the alleged attack in March, the Guardian reports. After a court found her guilty of adultery Monday, the woman was given a one-year suspended prison sentence and fined 3,000 riyal ($825). Her alleged attacker, a Syrian man, was convicted of extramarital sex and drinking alcohol and sentenced to 144 lashes. The woman told police that she had been drugged and assaulted following a night out at the Crystal Lounge in the W Doha Hotel, according to the Guardian. Her accused attacker admitted to having sex with her, but claimed it was consensual, and that she had gone to police following a row.“This is the news I have been waiting for for days,” the woman’s mother told Dutch national broadcaster NOS. “I haven’t slept for nights, but I’m very happy.”The Dutch ambassador to Qatar, Yvette Burghgraef-van Eechoud, said they would “do everything to get her out of the country as soon as possible.”[Guardian].

(AP) — Walt Disney World closed beaches at its Florida resorts Wednesday while dozens of rescuers searched a lagoon for the body of 2-year-old boy who was snatched off the shore and dragged underwater by an alligator as his father tried to fight off the reptile.Authorities said Wednesday that the child was presumed dead.Wildlife officials removed four alligators from the water and cut them open, but they found no sign of the boy.A Disney representative, speaking on condition of anonymity because the company had yet to prepare a formal statement, said the entertainment giant was closing beaches "out of an abundance of caution."After 15 hours of searching, officials said they planned to continue looking for the child's body."We're going to be here throughout," Sheriff Jerry Demings said.Wildlife officials said the attack was a rarity in a state with a gator population estimated at around 1 million. But it still spooked visitors in a city built on tourism."We have been to Yellowstone and encountered grizzly bears, but this is just freaky. A lizard?" said Minnesota tourist John Aho, staying at the park with his wife, Kim, and their 12-year-old son Johnny.Kim Aho said their son was leery after hearing what had happened."He's a little freaked out about the gator," she said. The family of four from Nebraska was on vacation at the Seven Seas Lagoon inside a Disney World resort around nightfall Tuesday when the child waded no more than 1 or 2 feet into the water and was taken from a small beach, sheriff's and state wildlife officials said. The boy's father desperately tried to save him, suffering lacerations on a hand. Neither could a lifeguard who was nearby, officials said."No swimming" signs were posted at the beach, Williamson said, but the child was wading, not swimming.Demings said there had been no other similar alligator attacks on the lake.Nick Wiley with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said witnesses estimated the alligator at between 4 feet and 7 feet in length. He said none of the four alligators removed from the water showed any signs of having been in contact with the boy.The beach area where the animal grabbed the child is part of the luxury Grand Floridian resort, across the lake from Disney's Magic Kingdom theme park. The man-made lake stretches about 200 acres and reaches a depth of 14 feet. The lake feeds into a series of canals that wind through the entire Disney property.More than 50 law enforcement personnel searched the well-tended lagoon along with an alligator tracker and marine units equipped with sonar to search the lake's sandy, mostly flat bottom. Divers were available if needed.Though Florida has grown to the third-most populous state, fatal alligator attacks remain rare. There have been 23 fatalities caused by wild alligators in Florida since 1973, according to data compiled by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Those fatalities were among 383 unprovoked bites not caused by someone handling or intentionally harassing an alligator.Eight children, ages 2 to 16, are among the fatalities. Five died while swimming in lakes, rivers and canals. The youngest victims were killed near lakes, including a 2-year-old girl who wandered 700 feet from her fenced backyard and a 3-year-old boy who left a roped-off swimming area in a county park to pick lily pads.___Associated Press writers Joshua Replogle in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, and Freida Frisaro and Jennifer Kay in Miami contributed to this report.

Enormous' inventories to keep lid on oil price: IEA-[AFP]-Jürgen Hecker-June 14, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Paris (AFP) - A huge overhang in oil stocks lingering across the world will keep a cap on any further oil price rises, the IEA said Tuesday, even as supply and demand move towards balance by the end of the year.Global demand for oil is steadily rising thanks to solid economic growth, and supply has been curbed by unexpected production cuts due to wildfires in Canada and rebel attacks in Nigeria, as well as falling US shale production, the International Energy Agency said in its monthly oil market report. These factors recently pushed the oil price above the key level of $50 as supply came closer to matching demand, a process known as rebalancing which the IEA expects to be fully in place in the second half of this year. But while market forces play out to help the oil price to continue climbing from its low point of close to $25 at the start of the year, there are still large oil inventories waiting to feed into the market, causing a supply glut that is likely to keep a lid on gains for some time."There is an enormous inventory overhang to clear," the IEA said. "This is likely to dampen prospects of a significant increase in oil prices."Worries about big stocks have caused the oil price to fall back from this year's high of around $51 reached early last month, the agency said, echoing Monday's report from the OPEC oil cartel which said that "speculators became somewhat less interested in long positions" because of the overhang in inventories.- Many moving parts -The benchmark Brent crude contract lost ground Tuesday, slipping to $49.83 in late afternoon European business while US's WTI contract eased to $48.46."Oil prices are due a short-term breather given the recent run up, as the market takes stock of broader macroeconomic developments," analysts at Energy Aspects said. The IEA said there is a "huge number of moving parts" in the current oil market environment, making accurate predictions hazardous. On the supply side, these involve a surprisingly strong return of Iran to the oil market after Western countries lifted sanctions which had been imposed over Tehran's nuclear programme, and questions over the timing of any full resumption of production in Nigeria once Niger Delta security issues are resolved.Iran has emerged as "OPEC's fastest source of supply growth this year", pumping oil at its highest level in five years, the IEA said.OPEC, meanwhile, has done little to correct the market's imbalance, failing earlier this month to agree on any production ceiling at a key meeting and deciding instead to keep oil gushing as the moderate recovery in the oil price eased pressure to limit output.Kingpin Saudi Arabia said at the time that the cartel was "very satisfied" with the market. This stance had at least "provided some clarity to the market", the IEA observed in its report.- 'Mixed messages' -On the demand side, the IEA said relatively weak oil prices will bring more buyers into the market, leading the agency to raise its forecast for 2016 demand growth to 1.3 million barrels per day (mb/d) from a previous 1.2 mb/d estimate.Countries outside the OECD club of highly-developed nations will provide the bulk of fresh demand, with India the world's growth leader, the IEA said.Korea and China are also projected to see strong demand.Following weakness since late last year, demand in the United States has picked up in recent months and will make a "vigorous" contribution to demand growth, it said.Worldwide oil demand is likely to continue to grow by 1.3 mb/d into next year, the IEA said, in its first estimate for 2017."The IEA report has provided mixed messages in the market today," said Dorian Lucus, energy analyst at Inenco. While flagging an expected increase in demand, "the report has also warned of potential lower prices should current offline capacity in both Nigeria and Canada return," he said. The 29-nation IEA, based in Paris, provides analysis on global energy markets.

Police, firefighters called in after flat Earth debate turns heated-[CBC]-June 14, 2016-YAHOONEWS

A family argument over whether the Earth is flat or round became so heated that one of the participants threw a propane cylinder onto a campfire, prompting an intervention by firefighters. The dispute over a question most considered resolved centuries ago boiled over around 10:30 p.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Park in Brockville, Ont.Police said a 56-year-old Brockville man was at a campsite with his son and his son's girlfriend when the woman began insisting that the Earth is flat. The older man insisted the Earth is round. It's not clear if anyone at the campfire put forth the argument that the Earth's equatorial bulge makes it not perfectly round, but instead a shape known as an oblate spheroid.Nevertheless, police said the man became so enraged he began throwing objects into the campfire, including a propane cylinder.Brockville firefighters were called to put out the campfire. By the time police arrived at the scene, the man had left.Brockville police are looking for the man and say they expect to charge him with mischief.
