ISOLDE studies the properties of atomic nuclei, with further applications in fundamental studies, astrophysics, material and life sciences-The Isotope mass Separator On-Line facility (ISOLDE) is a unique source of low-energy beams of radioactive nuclides, those with too many or too few neutrons to be stable. Presently an upgrade of the machine, HIE-ISOLDE, is underway that will improve the experimental capabilities of ISOLDE in many aspects. From the autumn of 2015 radioactive beams of 5.5 MeV/nucleon will be available.The ISOLDE facility has gathered unique expertise in research with radioactive beams. Over 700 isotopes of more than 70 elements have been used in a wide range of research domains, from cutting edge nuclear structure studies, through atomic physics, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, to solid state and life sciences. Not one to be outdone by the West, China is reportedly preparing to build a super-sized particle collider that’ll dwarf the existing Large Hadron Collider operated by CERN. Chinese scientists will use its proposed Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) to study Higgs boson particles, with the goal of learning more about the so called “God Particle” and possibly dark matter, which makes up most of the universe. The CEPC collider will measure between 50 and 100 kilometers (31 to 60 miles) in circumference, which is significantly larger than the LHC, which measures just 27 kilometers (about 17 miles) around. It will generate seven times the energy of the LHC, allowing scientists to potentially create millions of Higgs boson particles in a single go. The LHC is hitting its limits of energy level, it seems not possible to escalate the energy dramatically at the existing facility.” Construction won’t begin for quite some time, however. CERN’s WITCH (the Weak Interaction Trap for Charged Particles) experiment may not have the cat, but it does have its own particle-track broomstick.WITCH investigates weak interaction, the fundamental interaction responsible for radioactive decay. By slowing down and trapping a beam of ions from ISOLDE, WITCH can measure the recoil energy of an ion as it emits a positron and an electron neutrino during beta decay.WITCH’s “broomstick” shows two arrows pointing left represent the positron and the neutrino emitted during a beta decay, the arrow pointing right shows the decaying ion recoiling in the opposite -direction(Image: Nathal Severijns/WITCH)-The researchers are measuring properties of the decaying ion, hunting for any deviations that could provide evidence of a new particle and expose flaws in the Standard Model – the currently accepted model of how our universe is built. Data collected over a five-year period is now being analysed. So far no sign of deviations has appeared.“You go into an experiment like this knowing there’s a very low chance you’ll see deviations from the Standard Model, but you still hope you’ll find new physics,” Severijns says. “You are always trying to improve the sensitivity of the experiments so that each is better and more precise than the previous one. ISOLDE studies the properties of atomic nuclei, with further applications in fundamental studies, astrophysics, material and life sciences-The Isotope mass Separator On-Line facility (ISOLDE) is a unique source of low-energy beams of radioactive nuclides, those with too many or too few neutrons to be stable. The facility fulfils in fact the old alchemical dream of changing one element into another. It permits the study of the vast territory of atomic nuclei, including the most exotic species.The high intensity proton beam from the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) is directed into specially developed thick targets, yielding a large variety of atomic fragments. Different devices are used to ionize, extract and separate nuclei according to their mass, forming a low-energy beam that is delivered to various experimental stations. This beam can be further accelerated to 3 MeV/nucleon. The post acceleration of radioactive beams has opened new fields of research, allowing the study of nuclear reactions with light and medium-mass radioactive projectiles. Many of these experiments use Miniball, a gamma array of high purity germanium detectors. Presently an upgrade of the machine, HIE-ISOLDE, is underway that will improve the experimental capabilities of ISOLDE in many aspects. From the autumn of 2015 radioactive beams of 5.5 MeV/nucleon will be available.The ISOLDE facility has gathered unique expertise in research with radioactive beams. Over 700 isotopes of more than 70 elements have been used in a wide range of research domains, from cutting edge nuclear structure studies, through atomic physics, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, to solid state and life sciences. Not one to be outdone by the West, China is reportedly preparing to build a super-sized particle collider that’ll dwarf the existing Large Hadron Collider operated by CERN. Chinese scientists will use its proposed Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) to study Higgs boson particles, with the goal of learning more about the so called “God Particle” and possibly dark matter, which makes up most of the universe. The CEPC collider will measure between 50 and 100 kilometers (31 to 60 miles) in circumference, which is significantly larger than the LHC, which measures just 27 kilometers (about 17 miles) around. It will generate seven times the energy of the LHC, allowing scientists to potentially create millions of Higgs boson particles in a single go. Related: CERN’s Large Hadron Collider is behind U2’s tour art To date, the LHC has only spotted hundreds of Higgs boson particles because “it generates Higgs particles together with many other particles,” explained Wang Yifang, director of the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. “The proposed CEPC, however, collides electrons and positrons to create an extremely clean environment that only produces Higgs particles. The LHC is hitting its limits of energy level, it seems not possible to escalate the energy dramatically at the existing facility.” Construction won’t begin for quite some time, however. Speaking to China Daily, Wang said that the scientists have completed the first conceptual design and submitted those plans for international peer review. A final conceptual design will be ready by the end of 2016. Construction of the fist phase of the CEPC will begin between 2020 and 2025 with a second phase planned for 2040. The second phase will see the establishment of a Super Proton-Proton Collider that will be powered by a 100 TeV proton collider. In comparison, the LHC currently operates a 13 TeV proton to proton collider.
