Russia expanding major Syrian airport — monitoring group-Claim of work at site in Latakia province comes as Russia insists it is helping fight against IS, not bolstering regime-By AP September 13, 2015, 8:30 pm 2-the times of israel

BEIRUT — Russian forces are working to expand the tarmac of a major airport in Syria’s coastal province of Latakia, a stronghold of President Bashar Assad and his minority Alawite sect, a prominent Syrian monitoring group said Sunday.The report comes amid rising concern among US officials of increased Russian military activity in Syria. President Barack Obama cast the buildup as an effort to prop up the embattled leader, warning Moscow against doubling down on Assad.Russia, a longtime backer of Syria’s government, denies it’s trying to bolster Assad and instead says its increased military activity is part of the international effort to defeat the Islamic State group, the militant group that has wreaked havoc in both Syria and Iraq.The Associated Press reported earlier this week, quoting a former Lebanese general with knowledge of the Syrian military, that there were plans to build a military base in the coastal town of Jableh, more than 20 kilometers south of Latakia city. It is where the airport currently under development is located.The airport, known by its old name Hemeimeem, already houses a military base, and has come under shelling from militants who have advanced in the countryside of the province.It is the second most important government controlled airport in Syria after Damascus airport. The Hemeimeem airport was renamed the Basel al-Assad International airport, after the brother of the current president, who died in a car accident in 1994. According to the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority website, the airport’s tarmac is currently 2,800 meters (3,000 yards) long and 45 meters (49 yards) wide. It only has one terminal, according to the site.The head of the Britain- based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdurrahman, said witnesses, including officials inside the airport, describe the tarmac development as planned to ensure larger planes can land in the airport.“ It could mean there will be more supplies or that they want to turn it into an international airport,” Abdurrahman said.The witnesses told the Observatory no Syrian military or civilian officials are allowed near the tarmac. The Observatory relies on a network of activists and witnesses on the ground to report on the Syrian civil war, now in its fifth year. More than 250,000 people were killed in the violence, and nearly half of Syria’s pre-war population of 23 million has been displaced from their homes. About 4 million of them are refugees in neighboring countries.Abdurrahman said there are other plans to develop another rural airport east of Latakia city.The Alawite sect, from which Assad and his family descend, makes up about 13 percent of Syria’s pre-war population. It has historically been centered in towns and villages of Syria’s mountainous coast that make up the provinces of Latakia and Tartous. If the regime falls, that heartland could become a refuge for the community — and even for Assad himself — from which to fight for survival against a Sunni rebel insurgency and majority population that has long resented their domination.Abdurrahman said Russian planes arrived in recent weeks carrying military equipment and hundreds of Russian military advisers. He said the experts are also believed to be studying the expansion of the Damascus international airport.

A Israeli man was seriously wounded and two others sustained light injuries when a car they were riding in came under attack by rock-throwers in Jerusalem late Sunday night.Unknown assailants believed to be Palestinian residents of east Jerusalem attacked the car with stones, causing the driver to lose control, run into a ditch and crash into a pole.The incident occurred in the Arnona neighborhood in southeast Jerusalem.The three individuals were returning from a family dinner celebrating the Jewish New Year which began Sunday evening.The injured man, in is 50s, was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem for treatment.Police were searching for the perpetrators.

The Palestinian Authority, Jordan and the Arab League slammed the Israeli government for an operation during which police officers found pipe bombs on the Temple Mount in the Old City in Jerusalem on Sunday.The Shin Bet security service alerted police to the cache, apparently an effort by Palestinians to stock up on bombs, flares and rocks ahead of an organized riot.After the raid, which quickly turned violent, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of carrying out an “attack” on the mosque and said sites such as al-Aqsa constituted a “red line,” adding that the Palestinians “will not allow attacks against our holy places”.“The presidency strongly condemns the attack by the occupier’s military and police against the al-Aqsa Mosque and the aggression against the faithful who were there,” said a statement from Abbas’ office.Meanwhile, a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office said Israel sought to maintain the status quo on the Temple Mount but would not tolerate rioting on the compound.“Israel will use any means to maintain the status quo and the rule of law on the Temple Mount. It is the country’s duty and right to act against rioters in order to enable freedom of religious practice in this holy place. The head of Al-Qaeda said in a new message posted online Sunday that young Muslims should carry out lone wolf attacks against targets in Western countries, and the United States in particular, and urged Islamist groups to work together.“I call on all Muslims who can harm the countries of the crusader coalition not to hesitate. We must now focus on moving the war to the heart of the homes and cities of the crusader West and specifically America,” Ayman al-Zawahiri said in the audio recording.Zawahiri, who is in hiding, also urged greater unity among militants.“I call on all mujahedeen (Islamist fighters) in districts of Iraq and Syria to collaborate and help each other,” said Zawahiri.He repeated his position that the Islamic State group’s claim to be a caliphate was illegitimate, but said al-Qaeda would join IS in fighting Western and secular forces in Iraq and Syria. He said the decision on the caliphate had been taken “in secret and without consultation.”He singled out five areas of cooperation: ending inter-jihadist clashes, a halt to campaigns calling for rivals to be eliminated, the creation of an independent religious tribunal to resolve differences, a general amnesty and collaboration in treating the wounded, sheltering refugees and stocking food supplies.Such cooperation had become even more urgent, he said, as “the enemy has intensified its crusade against Islam.”Al-Qaeda’s Syria affiliate, Al-Nusra Front, allied with other Islamist rebel groups, has been locked in deadly clashes with IS for control of territory in the north and around Damascus.Zawahiri urged Muslim men in the West to follow the example of the Tsarnaev and Kouachi brothers. AP — Seeking to sell his nuclear deal with Iran to a skeptical Israeli public, US President Barack Obama has repeatedly declared his deep affection for the Jewish state. But the feelings do not appear to be mutual.Wide swaths of the Israeli public, particularly supporters of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have little trust in the American leader, considering him naive and even hostile. One recent poll showed less than a tenth considered him “pro-Israel.”Such misgivings bode poorly for Obama as he tries to repair ties with Israel in the final year of his presidency, and they would certainly complicate any renewed effort at brokering peace between Israel and its neighbors — once a major Obama ambition.The tense personal relationship between Netanyahu and Obama are certainly a factor in the poor state of affairs, and Netanyahu has made a number of missteps that have contributed to the tensions.On a trip to the White House in 2011, the Israeli leader appeared to lecture Obama on the pitfalls of Mideast peacemaking. Netanyahu has close ties to the billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson, and during the 2012 presidential race, Netanyahu appeared to favor Obama’s challenger, Mitt Romney.Netanyahu’s US-born ambassador to Washington, Ron Dermer, is a former Republican activist, and earlier this year, Netanyahu angered the White House by delivering a speech to Congress against the emerging Iran deal at the invitation of Republican leaders. Netanyahu has continued to lobby American lawmakers to oppose the Iran deal since it was finalized in July.But Obama also bears responsibility for a number of policy decisions that have jolted Israelis’ faith in him.“The average Israeli probably thinks that he is a nice guy, but he is naive,” said Alexander Yakobson, a historian at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In Israeli eyes, “he doesn’t get the Middle East, doesn’t understand how the Mideast functions, and he doesn’t therefore understand what dangers Israel has to face,” he added. Yakobson said the president’s missteps went back to his earliest days in office, when he chose to deliver a landmark speech in Cairo seeking to repair American relations with the Arab world. “That was never going to make him popular in Israel,” he said.Yakobson, who himself agrees with Obama’s opposition to Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank, said the president had nonetheless mishandled disagreements with Netanyahu over the issue and peace efforts with the Palestinians that collapsed last year. Many Israelis, he said, believe the Palestinians also deserve some of the blame.But the biggest issue has been the US-led nuclear agreement with Iran. Politicians across the spectrum have come out against deal, agreeing with Netanyahu’s assessment that it does not have sufficient safeguards to prevent Iran from gaining the ability to make a bomb and that it will boost Iran’s influence across the region. Iran is a key backer of Israel’s toughest enemies, and Netanyahu has warned that the ending of sanctions against Iran will result in more money and arms flowing to groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.Recent opinion polls reflect these sentiments. In one survey published Sunday in the Maariv daily, 77 percent of respondents said the deal endangers Israel, compared to 15 percent who said it didn’t. The poll interviewed 500 people and had a margin of error of 4.3 percentage points.An April survey of Jewish Israelis, carried out just after a preliminary nuclear deal with Iran was reached, had an equally harsh view of Obama. Just 9 percent of respondents described the White House as “pro-Israeli,” while 60 percent called it “pro- Palestinian.” More than 60 percent described Obama as the worst president for Israel in the past 30 years, far outdistancing runner-up Jimmy Carter at 16 percent.That survey, conducted by the Panels Politics agency with the Jewish Journal, questioned 503 Jewish Israelis and had a margin of error of 4.6 percentage points.In a survey of 40 countries, the Pew Research Center found the sharpest decline in Obama’s image over the past year occurred in Israel, where confidence slipped from 71 percent to 49 percent.At times, the anger toward Obama in Israel is palpable. On the streets and in online news forums, Israelis often refer to Obama by his middle name “Hussein,” a reference to his Muslim heritage on his father’s side. Last year, after an anonymous White House official used a pejorative term to describe Netanyahu as cowardly, Cabinet Minister Naftali Bennett warned that Obama was “throwing Israel under the bus.”For his part, Obama has acknowledged feeling hurt. In an address to American Jewish leaders last month, Obama underscored his deep commitment to Israel’s security and likened the debate over the Iran deal to a dispute within the family.“I would suggest that, in terms of the tone of this debate, everybody keep in mind that we’re all pro-Israel,” he said. “And we have to make sure that we don’t impugn people’s motives.”Obama has said that with the Iran deal complete, he would like to begin working with Israel on ways to increase its security and allay fears about the deal. The Haaretz daily on Sunday said talks on providing Israel with additional US weaponry have already quietly begun. Netanyahu’s office declined comment.But even if the two countries do manage to reach a new security deal, it seems unlikely that Obama will be able to repair the relationship with Netanyahu or restart Mideast peace efforts. The differences just run too deep.The White House has said it is trying to set up a meeting between Obama and Netanyahu for November, which would be their first meeting since the Iran deal was finalized.Yoram Ettinger, a former Israeli consul-general in Houston, said the issues here have little to do with personalities or alleged hostilities on the part of Obama. “It’s an issue of a gap between two very different world views,” he said.He said that in Israeli eyes, Obama is unrealistic, sending a message of weakness through his handling of the so-called Arab Spring over the past five years and by trusting an Iranian government with such a long record of defying the international community and supporting violent groups across the region.“Are you rooted in reality or are you rooted in wishful thinking,” he said.

Courtesy of ICNA-Among the many colorful billboards in New York City’s Times Square bodly advertising the latest movies, musicals or premium alcoholic drinks, one sign in particular stands out.“Muhammad believed in peace, social justice, women’s rights,” the sign reads.Those words are followed by the toll-free number 877-Why-Islam and the hashtag #WhoIs Muhammad. And New York is not alone in hosting such messages. The sign is one of dozens of similar billboards that have appeared in major cities around the country this summer -- all in an effort by a group of American Muslims to dispel misconceptions about the Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam.The Islamic Circle of North America, a national Muslim organization with about 40 chapters around the country, is responsible for the estimated 100 billboards in 32 cities, including major hubs like Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Memphis and Calgary, Canada. The billboards feature various messages like “Muhammad always taught love, not hate; peace, not violence” and “Discover Muhammad.” The campaign, which is paid for by local ICNA chapters, was launched after the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris in January.“This year we were going to focus on the theme of faith and service, originally,” said ICNA national president Naeem Baig. “But after the attacks in France, we started to receive calls from other Muslims, asking what we were going to do and how we were going to respond. So we came up with this idea, to focus on the understanding of the life of the Prophet.”Baig said that the Prophet Muhammad had faced much persecution during his life, but his response had always been a peaceful one. That’s the message ICNA wants to help spread with this campaign.“There are people who made fun of the Prophet, ridiculed him, tortured him. There are historical references about how he responded with kindness and generosity. When he had power to take revenge, he did not. There was no bloodshed in the streets of Mecca. So how can Muslims shed blood in the name of the Prophet?” said Baig.He added that it was important to educate both Muslims and non-Muslims alike about the way Prophet Muhammad lived his life.“The education of Muslims is also very important," he said. "A lot of Muslims love the Prophet, but we don’t know how the Prophet lived his life. The Council on American-Islamic Relations ran a campaign in 2013 to explain the meaning of jihad. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has also also run several billboard and bus campaigns featuring the slogans “Muslims for Peace” and “Muslims for Loyalty,” including a flashing sign in Times Square in New York.The response to the campaign has been peaceful so far, said Baig, who added that the organization had received calls in response to the billboards. “The hateful and abusive calls are in small number as compared to the positive ones,” he said.
