BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Baltimore's chief prosecutor charged one police officer with murder on Friday and five others with lesser crimes in the death of a young black man who suffered a critical neck injury in the back of a police van, a case that fueled new anger over police conduct in black communities.
The swift decision by Marilyn Mosby, who has been in the position only since January, to charge the six officers in the death of Freddie Gray caught many by surprise in a city that experienced its worst civil unrest in decades on Monday night.Mosby made her announcement hours after the Maryland state medical examiner had ruled the death a homicide and a day after police handed her office the findings of its internal review of Gray's April 12 arrest.Caesar R. Goodson Jr., a black officer who drove the police van, was charged with second-degree murder, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison.All six officers - three black and three white, five men and one woman - posted bond after their arrest Friday and were released from custody. Their union rose to their defense."We are disappointed in the apparent rush to judgment given the fact the investigation into this matter has not been concluded," said Gene Ryan, president of the Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police.Mosby, a 35-year-old African American, whose family includes generations of law enforcement officers, rejected the union's call for a special prosecutor.After a convulsive week, thousands of demonstrators marched through the majority black city on Friday evening, with many believing their mostly peaceful protests over two weeks had prompted Mosby's decision."It was the people, it was the people out in the streets that made this happen," said Rev. Osagyefo Sekou, a civil rights activist.Rioters burned buildings and looted stores in Baltimore on Monday night after Gray's funeral, and protests spread to other major cities in a reprise of demonstrations set off by police killings last year of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, New York and elsewhere.Gray, 25, sustained his fatal injury while riding in a police van, the prosecutor said, citing the autopsy report. "Billy" Murphy, noting "it was a good shock that justice had been approached in this forthright and courageous manner by this prosecutor."

CURFEW REMAINS IN FORCE

Officers cuffed Gray's hands behind his back and shackled his legs but did not secure him with a seatbelt while the van was moving, a violation of police department policy, Mosby said. Then, with "depraved indifference," officers ignored Gray's repeated pleas for medical attention, she said.While the charges brought joy and relief to the city of 620,000, residents cautioned that they needed to see justice served, not only in Baltimore but in other poor communities where young black men believe they are targeted by police.While touring the city to assess the impact of the unrest, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said he does not recommend the city lift its curfew just yet."We're still expecting quite a bit of activity tonight and tomorrow," Hogan told Reuters. "Hopefully, we'll get back to normal in a couple of days."Police arrested at least several protesters who defied the curfew.In Ferguson and New York last year, grand juries decided against charging officers who were involved in the deaths of two unarmed black men. The news triggered rioting in the St. Louis suburb and days of protest marches in New York and other cities.Apart from the one murder charge, the officers faced charges ranging from manslaughter to assault and misconduct in office, which carry potential prison terms of between three and 10 years.Goodson also faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter, as do three others: Sgt. The man immediately fled with the officers in pursuit.When they caught up to him, Gray was handcuffed behind his back and dragged by the arms, screaming, into a waiting van, a bystander's video footage shows.The prosecutor said Gray's arrest was illegal. Officers had said that he was carrying a switchblade knife in violation of the law, but she said it was in fact a folding knife that was legal to carry.Mosby said the fatal injury occurred after the van stopped to allow officers to shackle Gray's legs and put him back inside. KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Some of the relief material for survivors of Nepal's devastating earthquake was being held up at the country's only international airport because of customs bottlenecks, the United Nations said on Saturday, as the death toll from the disaster passed 6,600.Nepal exempted tarpaulins and tents from import taxes on Friday, but U.N. Resident Representative Jamie McGoldrick told Reuters the government had to loosen customs restrictions further to deal with the increasing flow of relief material."They should not be using peacetime customs methodology," he said. Material was piling up at the Kathmandu airport instead of being ferried out to victims, McGoldrick said.There was no immediate response from the government but Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat had appealed to international donors on Friday to send tents, tarpaulins and basic food supplies, saying some of the items received were of no use."We have received things like tuna fish and mayonnaise. What good are those things for us? We need grains, salt and sugar," he told reporters. U.S. military aircraft and personnel were to arrive in Kathmandu on Saturday to help in relief operations. One of their tasks would be to deal with the growing piles of aid material.Brigadier General Paul Kennedy of the U.S. Marine Corps told Reuters six military aircraft, including two helicopters, were to arrive, accompanied by 100 Marines and lifting equipment, under an agreement reached with Nepal’s government earlier in the week."What you don't want to do is build up a mountain of supplies", blocking space for planes or more supplies, Kennedy said.There were other bottlenecks besides customs.Nepali government officials have said efforts to step up the pace of delivery of relief material to remote areas were frustrated by a shortage of supply trucks and drivers, many of whom had returned to their villages to help their families."Our granaries are full and we have ample food stock, but we are not able to transport supplies at a faster pace," said Shrimani Raj Khanal, a manager at the Nepal Food Corp.Army helicopters have air-dropped instant noodles and biscuits to remote communities but people need rice and other ingredients to cook a proper meal, he said.The government said the death toll from last Saturday's 7.8 magnitude earthquake had reached 6,621, and that more than 14,000 people were injured.

SNIFFER DOGS

In Kathmandu, teams with sniffer dogs were moving slowly through ruined buildings to locate bodies still buried in the rubble a week after the disaster. Elsewhere, volunteers were stacking up bricks recovered from the debris to begin the slow process of reconstruction.Many Nepalis have been sleeping in the open since the quake, with survivors afraid to return to their homes because of powerful aftershocks. Tents had been pitched in Kathmandu's main sports stadium and on its only golf course.According to the United Nations, 600,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged.The United Nations said 8 million of Nepal's 28 million people were affected, with at least 2 million needing tents, water, food and medicines over the next three months.The worry now is how to prevent the outbreak of disease."Hospitals are overflowing, water is scarce, bodies are still buried under the rubble and people are still sleeping in the open," Rownak Khan, UNICEF's deputy representative in Nepal, said in a statement."This is a perfect breeding ground for diseases."(Additional reporting by Ross Adkin; Writing by Raju Gopalakrishnan; Editing by Paul Tait)

All six officers were in custody and being processed at Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Center as of 2 p.m., said Gerard Shields, a spokesman for the department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

Officer Caesar Goodson Jr., 45, who was the driver of a police van that carried Gray through the streets of Baltimore, was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, second-degree assault, two vehicular manslaughter charges and misconduct in office. A man who answered the phone at Goodson's home declined to comment and hung up the phone.

Officer William Porter, 25, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and misconduct in office.

Lt. Brian Rice, 41, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and misconduct in office.

Sgt. Alicia White, 30, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and misconduct in office.

Officer Edward Nero, 29, was charged with second-degree assault and misconduct in office.

Officer Garrett Miller, 26, was charged with second-degree assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment.

If convicted of all charges, Goodson would face up to 63 years in prison, Rice would face up to 30 years and Porter, Nero, Miller and White would face up to 20 years.

Gray suffered a "severe and critical neck injury" as a result of being handcuffed, shackled and not seat-belted in the van, Mosby said.Everything was rushed through to get charges created against these cops to appease the rioters. However, it won't appease them, as their goals are more than protesting Freddie Gray's death. He means nothing to them. They want an excuse to riot. Mosby said an investigation found officers placed Gray in wrist and ankle restraints and left him stomach-down on the floor of a police van as they drove around West Baltimore. On at least five occasions, officers placed Gray in the van or checked on him and failed to secure him, she said. By the time the van reached the Western District police station, he was not breathing and was in cardiac arrest, she said.Mosby called the investigation, which she said began the day after Gray's arrest, "comprehensive, thorough and independent." She worked quickly in filing charges, which came the morning after Baltimore police handed over their investigation to her office. The police investigation was turned over a day earlier than promised.Just before Mosby announced the criminal charges, the Baltimore police union defended the officers involved."Not one of the officers involved in this tragic situation left home in the morning with the anticipation that someone with whom they interacted would not go home that night," Gene Ryan, president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3, wrote in a letter to Mosby. "As tragic as this situation is, none of the officers involved are responsible for the death of Mr. Gray."The police union asked Mosby to appoint an independent prosecutor in the case, citing her ties to the Gray family's attorney, William Murphy, as well as her lead prosecutor's connections to members of the local media. Murphy donated $5,000 to Mosby's campaign and served on her transition committee.Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said she is "sickened and heartbroken" over the charges against the officers."No one in our city is above the law," she said. "Justice must apply to all of us equally."Gov. Larry Hogan, who has been in Baltimore all week, said he had no immediate reaction to the officers being charged. He said his sole job is to keep the peace.The Rev. (CNN) -- In an open letter to Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby, the city police union's president said that "none of the officers involved are responsible for the death of (Freddie) Gray." "To the contrary, at all times, each of the officers diligently balanced their obligations to protect Mr. Gray and discharge their duties to protect the public," wrote Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police President Gene Ryan. Ryan asked in the letter, which came out just before Mosby announced that six officers face charges in Gray's death, that a special independent prosecutor be appointed to look into the case.

Baltimore's state's attorney announced Friday that charges will be filed against six police officers in the death of Freddie Gray."I assured his family that no one is above the law and that I would pursue justice on their behalf," Marilyn Mosby said in a press conference on Friday.The charges against the officers include second-degree murder, manslaughter, assault and misconduct in office, among others.These are Mosby's first public comments on the case. Her announcement that her investigation had determined Gray's death was a homicide was met with cheers from Baltimore residents, who have held protests and riots demanding justice for the 25-year-old.Gray was arrested April 12 and died a week later from his injuries. The Baltimore police officers union is asking State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby to appoint a special independent prosecutor for the Freddie Gray death investigation.Fraternal Order of Police local president Gene Ryan told Mosby in a letter Friday that the union is concerned about her ties to Gray family attorney Billy Murphy.Murphy was among Mosby’s biggest campaign contributors last year, donating the maximum individual amount allowed, $4,000, in June. He was also on Mosby’s transition team after the election.The union says none of the six officers suspended in the investigation is responsible for Gray’s death. The 25-year-old black man died one week after suffering a severe spinal cord injury in police custody.

The state medical examiner’s office says it has sent the autopsy report on Freddie Gray to prosecutors.Officials made the announcement Friday morning. In Baltimore, they call it a “rough ride.” In Philadelphia, they had another name for it that hints at the age of the practice — a “nickel ride,” a reference to old-time amusement park rides that cost five cents. Other cities called them joy rides.The slang terms mask a dark tradition of police misconduct in which suspects, seated or lying face down and in handcuffs in the back of a police wagon, are jolted and battered by an intentionally rough and bumpy ride that can do as much damage as a police baton without an officer having to administer a blow.The exact cause of the spinal injury that Freddie Gray, 25, sustained while in police custody in Baltimore before his death April 19 has not been made clear. The police have said that he was not strapped into a seatbelt, a violation of department policy. That has led some to wonder whether he was deliberately left unbuckled, reminiscent of a practice that while little known has left a brutal, costly legacy of severe injuries and multimillion-dollar settlements throughout the country.Residents of Baltimore describe their experience with “rough” rides in police vans. Davey, said at a news conference last week. “We just don’t know what.”Determining exactly how Mr. Gray was injured will be a focus of the investigation. Even if it happened in the van, it does not necessarily point toward an intentional rough ride, a ritual experts said was at least several decades old. “I never saw it, but I’ve heard about it,” said Bernard K. Melekian, the undersheriff of Santa Barbara County, Calif., and a former director of the Justice Department’s community-oriented policing office. “My sense was that that kind of behavior had long been gone.”

The tradition was regarded as a technique by aggressive officers to inflict punishment on those they arrested without ever being accused of physically assaulting them with their weapons or hands. For a suspect with hands cuffed behind him, seated on a thin bench in the back of a speeding police van, a sudden stop or a sharp turn or a bumpy road can cause severe injuries that can leave a person in a wheelchair or disfigured for life.One June night in 1980, Freddie Franklin was walking on 75th Street in Chicago with a friend when he said that a group of police officers wrongfully arrested him, placed him in handcuffs and forced him into the back of a wagon. Two officers drove the van recklessly, to throw him around the floor of the van, he said in a federal lawsuit. Klotz, a police-procedures expert and former deputy chief of police of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington. “It’s one of those nebulous type of things where the individual feels they’ve been subjected to it because they’ve been mouthy. The officers say they have no intent in doing anything. It winds up in a he said-she said situation.”Lawyers and police experts said it was impossible to know how widespread the rough-riding practice has been throughout the country. Allegations have surfaced over the years in cities large and small.In 1999, a former police chaplain in Aurora, Ill., a city of nearly 200,000 outside Chicago, filed a civil rights lawsuit accusing the police department there of making it a common practice for drivers to stop suddenly to injure handcuffed suspects. Police leaders denied the allegations, but the suit was later settled.In 2001, The Philadelphia Inquirer published a series of articles detailing injuries sustained by 20 victims of so-called nickel rides. The victims were paid $2.3 million in city legal settlements, although no officer had ever been disciplined for the practice. In response, the police commissioner at the time, John F. Timoney, banned the use of all police wagons not equipped with seatbelts or safety padding.In Chicago, the American Civil Liberties Union represented Mr. Franklin in the federal lawsuit he filed against six police officers, alleging injuries that required two reconstructive operations on his mouth. Although the city’s lawyers denied the officers had done anything wrong, the city settled the lawsuit for $135,000.At least two other Baltimore men, Jeffrey Alston and Dondi Johnson, were paralyzed after police van rides in separate cases that led to lawsuits. Mr. Alston, paralyzed from the neck down, settled for $6 million in 2004.Experts said that nationally, the tradition was no longer as prevalent as it once was. Many departments now require officers to place suspects riding in vans in seatbelts or other restraints. Some agencies use vans that allow prisoners with their hands cuffed behind their backs to hold on to belts behind them. And public scrutiny of police misconduct has helped reform agencies that might have once tolerated or ignored complaints of rough van rides.“I don’t believe this is standard operating procedure,” said Hubert Williams, a former police director of Newark, who is a consultant with the nonprofit Independent Institute. “What’s been happening through the years is that the police have changed. Policing by and large through the years has become more community-oriented and more accountable to the public. But that does not dispose of these questions. BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Protesters and the family of a 25-year-old black man who died of injuries sustained while in police custody planned a May Day march in Baltimore as they demanded answers and punishment for the officers involved.Freddie Gray's death is the latest in a string of incidents exposing the tense relations between U.S. minorities and police. Protesters planned to use annual May 1 marches, marking International Labor Day, to focus attention on the case, which follows the killings of unarmed black men in recent months.Police in Baltimore turned over their report on the case a day earlier to prosecutors but released few details publicly, though local media reports suggested Gray may have been injured while he was in the back of a police van.After rioting in Baltimore on Monday, protests have spread to major cities around the United States, resembling scenes of outrage sparked last year by police killings of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, New York and elsewhere.Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby, a black woman who is the daughter and granddaughter of police officers, has now taken over the investigation to determine what exactly happened to Gray and whether any of the six officers involved in his arrest should face criminal charges. (CNN)Chile's Calbuco Volcano erupted again Thursday, marking the third time since last week, the National Service of Geology and Mining said.Gregorio Billikopf lives across Lake Llanquihue from the volcano has been photographing and videotaping the three eruptions and described Thursday's event as spectacular but not as severe as the two prior ones."There is still smoke on and off, but nothing so dramatic (as before)," said Billikopf, a retired university adviser on agricultural issues. "On a good day I can see about eight volcanoes."I understand that the rain that was announced for today would have been a disaster," he added.He lives in a rainy part of Chile, which he described as like a Garden of Eden.The explosion produced an extensive plume, but it was also described as smaller than the eruptions on April 22 and April 23, according to CNN Chile.Deputy Interior Minister Mahmud Aleuy said about 1,500 people were evacuated, and security measures will continue as "contingency plans are operating," CNN Chile reported Thursday.For the past several days, the geology agency has maintained there was a possibility of a third eruption as part of steadily declining seismic activity in the area.A 20-kilometer (12-mile) exclusion zone has been established around the crater, and Chilean authorities have been keeping residents away from that zone.Last week, military and police forces helped evacuate more than 4,400 residents, the Interior Ministry said then.The seismic event is sure to add to the volume of ash already spewed since the first eruption.Ash spread to Argentina in the second eruption, which occurred a day after the first.Evacuations in the region involved not only people but also animals.The volcanic debris has landed and piled up in some places to a depth of almost 2 feet, the Ministry of Interior and Public Safety said.New advisories say airborne ash could reach an altitude of 12,000 feet.There was no immediate information on the strength of the third eruption, but government officials have said the second, spectacular nighttime eruption was stronger than the first one.Last week in Ensenada, houses, trees and even sheep were blanketed gray with ash. Three hundred miles off the Pacific Northwest coast, the seafloor has been rumbling.Over the past five months, there were hundreds of small earthquakes on most days at Axial Seamount.Then on April 24, there was a spike: nearly 8,000 earthquakes. The seafloor level dropped more than two meters. Temperatures rose.Scientists believe an underwater volcano is erupting.An eruption is not a threat to coastal residents, researchers say, because the earthquakes are small, mostly magnitude 1 or 2, and the seafloor movements are relatively gradual, so they won't cause a tsunami.The volcanic activity has no relationship to the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which scientists watch closely for signs of a much larger and more destructive earthquake. To Bill Chadwick, an Oregon State University geologist, the eruption at Axial Seamount was not a surprise. He had predicted it would happen this year. He predicted the previous eruption, in 2011, too.Chadwick hopes the lessons he and his collaborator, Scott Nooner at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, learn from Axial Seamount can eventually be applied to volcanoes on land.Land volcanoes have thicker crusts and are influenced by large earthquakes and other nearby volcanoes, among other things, so predictions are more difficult, Chadwick said."Axial Seamount is a pure example, if you will," he said. "It's like a balloon filling with air. The seafloor actually rises -- that's what we're measuring."Super sensitive pressure sensors can detect shifts as small as two millimeters, he said.The earthquakes that University of Washington geologist Bill Wilcock detected are caused by magma forcing its way through the rock, Chadwick said.Though the signs seem to point to an eruption, it will likely be months before Chadwick can travel out to Axial Seamount to do the measurements that will say for sure. He has a trip planned for August.

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - The death toll from Nepal's devastating earthquake rose steadily past 6,200 on Friday as fresh aftershocks and the stench of rotting bodies made it hard for nervous survivors to return to their homes.Disposal of the hundreds of bodies still being found six days after the 7.9 magnitude quake devastated the Himalayan nation of 28 million people was becoming a problem for officials, who have ordered immediate cremations."Morgues are full beyond capacity and we have been given instruction to incinerate bodies immediately after they are pulled out," said Raman Lal, an Indian paramilitary force official working in coordination with Nepali forces.Aid was slowly beginning to reach remote towns and villages nestled in the mountains and foothills but the overpowering smell of bodies trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings in the capital was making it hard for residents to return to their homes.Many Nepalis have been sleeping in the open since Saturday's quake. According to the United Nations, 600,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged.Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat said Nepal would need at least $2 billion to rebuild homes, hospitals, government offices and historic buildings and appealed for help from international donors."This is just an initial estimate and it will take time to assess the extent of damage and calculate the cost of rebuilding," Mahat told Reuters.The United Nations has said 8 million people had been affected, with at least 2 million in need of tents, water, food and medicines over the next three months.A home ministry official said the death toll had risen to 6,204, with 13,924 injured.Information Minister Minendra Rijal said the government would provide $1,000 in immediate assistance to the families of those killed, as well as $400 for cremation or burial.Prime Minister Sushil Koirala told Reuters earlier this week the death toll from the quake could reach 10,000.That would surpass the 8,500 who died in a 1934 earthquake, the last disaster on this scale to hit the Himalayan nation sandwiched between India and China.

UNPRECEDENTED SCALE

Home ministry official Laxmi Prasad Dhakal said that, even though the 1934 quake was more powerful, there were fewer people living in the Kathmandu valley then."The scale of reconstruction will be unprecedented," Dhakal said. "We have still not even been able to assess the damage in remote areas, which have been completely devastated."Officials have said the chances of finding any more survivors were fading, even though a boy and a woman had on Thursday been pulled from the rubble where they had lain trapped for five days.As rescuers slowly started reaching outlying areas, witnesses reported seeing 70 to 80 percent of buildings severely damaged in Chautara, northeast of Kathmandu towards the border with China's Tibet.Anger over the pace of the rescue has flared in some areas, with Nepalis accusing the government of being too slow to distribute international aid that has flooded into the country.It has yet to reach many in need, particularly in areas hard to reach given the quake damage, poor weather and aftershocks.Tensions between foreigners and Nepalis desperate to be evacuated have also surfaced. In Ashrang village in Gorkha, one of the worst-hit districts about four hours by road west of Kathmandu, hundreds of villagers were living outdoors with little food and water even as boxes of biscuits, juice and sacks of rice and wheat were stored in a nearby government office.Nepal is also appealing to foreign governments for more helicopters help the 20 at work in rescue operations. Kathmandu (AFP) - Rescuers pulled a 15-year-old boy alive from the rubble of Nepal's earthquake Thursday, bringing a rare moment of joy to the ruined capital Kathmandu, five days after a disaster which killed nearly 6,000 people.The rescue of Pemba Tamang, who told AFP that he stayed alive by eating ghee, was hailed as a miracle and greeted with cheers from crowds of bystanders who massed to watch the drama unfold at a ruined guesthouse.But the recovery of another teenager's body from the same ruins only minutes later underlined how the prospects of finding further survivors of Saturday's 7.8-magnitude quake were becoming more remote.Caked in dust, Pemba was fitted with a neck brace and hooked up to an intravenous drip before being lifted onto a stretcher and then raced to a field hospital where he was found to have only minor cuts and bruises."I never thought I would make it out alive," the teenager told AFP at the Israeli military-run facility where he was being kept for observation.Pemba, who worked at the guesthouse as a bellboy, said he had been eating lunch next to reception when the ground started shaking."I tried to run but... something fell on my head and I lost consciousness -- I've no idea for how long," he said."When I came round, I was trapped under the debris and there was total darkness," he added."I heard other people's voices screaming out for help around me ... but I felt helpless."Asked if he had had anything to eat while he was trapped, Pemba said he had come across a jar of ghee (clarified butter) in the dark."I don't know where it came from," he added.Libby Weiss, a spokeswoman at the Israeli field hospital, said Pemba was doing "remarkably well", confirming he did not have any major injuries."He was under the rubble for 120 hours and it is certainly the longest we have heard anybody of being under the rubble and surviving," she told AFP."I don't have any logical explanation. It is miraculous. It is a wonderful thing to see in all this destruction."- 'How will I earn?' -While Pemba appeared to have emerged from his ordeal largely unscathed, a man who was rescued on Tuesday night after being trapped for 82 hours was coming to terms with having his leg amputated.Speaking to AFP in his hospital bed, Rishi Khanal, 28, recounted how he had given up hope of being found alive and felt that he had been given "a second life" but worried about how he would now fend for himself."I thought I would work, I would earn... how will I after this?," said Khanal who had been on his way to a new job in Dubai when he was caught in the quake.Launching an appeal for $415 million in aid, the UN said it would take a marathon effort to help the people of one of Asia's poorest countries.The UN's World Health Organization said it had received reports that around 1,400 had been killed in the Sindhupalchowk region, a mountainous region northeast of Kathmandu which was becoming a major focus of international relief efforts.Nepalese and Indian military helicopters have also been flying in aid to remote areas of Gorkha district, another badly-hit region, which otherwise takes up to 12 days to reach by foot, the WHO said."But the needs remain great, with helicopters unable to reach some communities due to poor weather and steep hillsides," said a statement. "Reaching these communities and providing health support is essential."The latest official toll put the number of dead at 5,844 and more than 10,000 are known to have been injured. More than 100 people were also killed in neighbouring countries such as India and China.- Fresh tremors -Although the number of aftershocks since Saturday's quake has subsided, fresh tremors were felt in Kathmandu overnight.Some people who had spent the past four nights camped out in the open for fear of aftershocks spent their first night back home.But a significant number are still living on the roadside or open ground, according to AFP correspondents in the ruined capital, which is normally home to some 2.5 million people, including many migrant workers."I don't know how long we are going to do this. How long can we live on the street?" said Rajina Maharjan after another night camped out in a tent outside her house with her husband, in laws and a four-year-old son.Hundreds of thousands of residents have fled the city since Saturday, fearing aftershocks and wanting to inspect the damage back in their families' villages.Signs of normal life were returning Thursday to Kathmandu, with shopkeepers opening, some for their first time since the quake, and vegetable vendors laying out produce at devastated Durbar Square.
