The Superior of the Fraternity of St. Pius X, Bishop Bernard Fellay and Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and President of the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei” (the body that handles relations between the Holy See’s and the Lefebvrians), discussed “problems of a doctrinal and canonical nature” which need to be resolved in order for the Fraternity to enter into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.  This was the first time Fellay held a face to face meeting with Müller since the latter was appointed head of the doctrinal Congregation. The Holy See announced the meeting, which took place at the premises of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.The Holy See’s press release informs that the talks were “cordial”. Müller was joined by archbishops Luis Ladaria and Augustine Di Noia, respectively secretary and adjunct secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faithand Guido Pozzo, secretary of the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei”. Bishop Fellay was accompanied by two assistants from the Society of St. Pius X, Rev. Niklaus Pfluger and Rev. Alain-Marc Nély.“During the meeting,” the statement says, “various problems of a doctrinal and canonical nature were examined, and it was decided to proceed gradually and over a reasonable period of time in order to overcome difficulties and with a view to the envisioned full reconciliation.” This phrase is important as it indicates that communication channels between the Holy See and the Lefebvrians remain open. Some in the Vatican and in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith called for a drastic decision to bring about a formal split between the two again. But Francis does not intend to close the door on dialogue with the Fraternity.Readers will recall that on 13 June 2012, the former Prefect of the Holy Office, Cardinal William Levada, had delivered a doctrinal preamble to Fellay to sign. However, four days later, the Lefebvrian superior wrote a letter to Benedict XVI informing him that he could not agree to the terms laid out in the document. Benedict XVI replied on 30 June 2012 communicating his disappointment and repeating his request to the Lefebvrians to recognize that “the magisterium is the authentic interpreter of the Tradition,” that the Second Vatican Council agrees with Tradition and that the Novus Ordo Missae, the post-conciliar liturgical reform promulgated by Paul VI, was not only valid but also legitimate.

Rome-As Cardinal Gerhard  Müller revealed in a recent interview with Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano’s monthly women’s insert, Pope Francis has boosted female presence in the International Theological Commission. The Pope showed how much he values the work of female theologians by nominating five more women to the body set up by Pope Paul VI on 11 April 1969 and headed for a long time by Joseph Ratzinger.A Vatican statement speaks of “a notable increase in the contribution of female theologians.” “Women now constitute 16% of the Commission’s members, a sign of growing female involvement in theological research.”The International Theological Commission has been tasked with helping the Holy See and especially the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in examining the most important doctrinal issues of the moment. The Commission is composed of no more than 30 theologians from various nations and different schools of theology, appointed by the Pope “ad quinquennium”. The appointments are made by recommendation of the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, following a consultation with Bishops’ Conferences. Since it came into existence, the Commission has published 27 documents with the president’s approval.The Commission began its new five-year term on 26 July. On that occasion, the Pope nominated 30 new members. These next five years will also mark the Commission’s jubilee year: on 11 April 2019, the Commission will celebrate its 50th anniversary.On this occasion too, based on the feedback received, the Congregation’s current prefect, Müller, presented his preferred candidates: “Taking these proposals into consideration, the Pope appointed the theologians who are to form the Commission, at the same time renewing the appointment of Fr. In the text, which was presented in the Vatican today, Francis once again denounced “the shameful and criminal trafficking of human beings" and called for “a systematic and active cooperation between States and international organizations” as “no country can singlehandedly face the difficulties associated with this phenomenon.”The Pope – whose grandparents migrated from Italy to Argentina – said: “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” “The mission of the Church, herself a pilgrim in the world and the Mother of all, is thus to love Jesus Christ, to adore and love him, particularly in the poorest and most abandoned; among these are certainly migrants and refugees, who are trying to escape difficult living conditions and dangers of every kind.”“The Church without frontiers, Mother to all, spreads throughout the world a culture of acceptance and solidarity, in which no one is seen as useless, out of place or disposable,” Francis writes in his text for the event titled: “The Church without frontiers, Mother to all”.“In an age of such vast movements of migration, large numbers of people are leaving their homelands, with a suitcase full of fears and desires, to undertake a hopeful and dangerous trip in search of more humane living conditions. Often, however, such migration gives rise to suspicion and hostility, even in ecclesial communities, prior to any knowledge of the migrants’ lives or their stories of persecution and destitution. In such cases, suspicion and prejudice conflict with the biblical commandment of welcoming with respect and solidarity the stranger in need. On the other hand, we sense in our conscience the call to touch human misery, and to put into practice the commandment of love that Jesus left us when he identified himself with the stranger, with the one who suffers, with all the innocent victims of violence and exploitation. Because of the weakness of our nature, however, “we are tempted to be that kind of Christian who keeps the Lord’s wounds at arm’s length,” Francis writes referring back to his Apostolic Exhortation “Evangelii Gaudium”. “The courage born of faith, hope and love enables us to reduce the distances that separate us from human misery. BRUSSELS - EU ombudsman Emily O'Reilly wants more transparency from EU institutions on letting officials switch to the private sector, negotiating trade agreements, and allowing medicines onto the European market."Even if I don’t have powers of a judge, I do have very strong investigatory powers, I can summon officials to question them about their actions," O'Reilly said Tuesday (23 September) in a press conference reporting on her first year in office.Providing she gets re-elected in January by the European Parliament, O'Reilly said she wants to use her powers "in a more robust way" and pursue a more "strategic" way of investigating transparency and integrity issues with EU institutions.The EU ombudsman office is a 80-strong unit dealing with citizens' complaints. It also has the power to conduct own inquiries into conflicts of interest or transparency matters. The subsequent recommendations are non-binding but tend to put the institution concerned into the spotlight.O'Reilly, who in 2003 was elected Ireland's first woman ombudsman, has already launched a public consultation about the ongoing EU-US trade negotiations (TTIP) which have drawn criticism for their secrecy and alleged privileged access for industry groups.She has sent a series of questions to the EU commission about these allegations and said that if the answers - due by next month - are not satisfactory, the trade commissioner may be summoned for further explanations.

More scrutiny on 'revolving doors'

Conflicts of interest is another "strategic" area O'Reilly is pursuing, after having looked at a sample of 54 EU officials who left their job to work for the private sector.She said the inquiry found "major deficiencies" in the way the European Commission justifies permissions to leave to a private sector job."We found that when someone was given permission, it was not very well reasoned, while when permission was not granted or restrictions were put in place, there was a very good reasoning for it," she said.O'Reilly said the EU commission should set up a public register where the names and new jobs of EU senior officials are published. She argues that, in this case, the public interest trumps the privacy rights of those officials. The UK already has such a register for its government officials who switch to the public sector.Other EU institutions are also subject of her scrutiny, such as the European Central Bank, whose transparency policy is "erring on side of extreme caution", or the European Medicines Agency, which, she said, first had a very progressive transparency policy but then caved in to pressure from the pharmaceuticals industry.Looking at the statistics on where citizens' complaints originated from, Spain topped the list in 2013 with 416 complaints, followed by Germany with 269 and Poland with 248.But as most of these complaints were referred to national authorities, Belgium emerges as the country with the most inquiries opened (53) as a result of such complaints, followed by Germany (40 inquiries) and Italy (39 inquiries).At the other end of the scale is Malta, with seven complaints and zero inquiries launched in 2013, followed by Denmark ( seven complaints, three inquiries).

BRUSSELS - European Central Bank (ECB) chief Mario Draghi has said he is prepared to use more unconventional measures to spur growth in the eurozone."We stand ready to use additional unconventional instruments within our mandate, and alter the size and/or the composition of our unconventional interventions should it become necessary to further address risks of a too-prolonged period of low inflation," he told MEPs on Monday (18 September).He said loose monetary policy will only be stopped "when we have complied with our mandate" which is to keep inflation at close to 2 percent. Currently inflation is at 0.4 percent.The ECB has taken a series of steps since the summer to try and boost the economy and head off deflation, including interest-rate cuts and cheap loans to banks. In early September the Frankfurt-based bank cut rates further and announced it planned to buy asset backed securities (ABS).However its lending programme was deemed to have faltered when 255 eurozone banks last week only borrowed €82 billion of the €400 billion available.Draghi countered that this was "within the range of take-up values" expected by the ECB and said the overall programme should only be assessed in December when the next round of loans comes up.He suggested that the lack of bank lending to the private sector was partly due to the upcoming financial health checks of eurozone lenders.But he added that the tests - which sound out if banks will be able to weather future crises - are necessary otherwise the uncleaned "wound" will continue to fester resulting in zombie banks as happened in Japan.Fielding a question on why the ECB had not spotted the recent meltdown of Portuguese bank Banco Espirito Santo, Draghi said that his institution will only take over the supervision of 120 major eurozone banks on 4 November something he qualified as the "biggest step of European economic integration since the inception of the euro".He argued that the troika, the trio of lenders to Portugal, had created better standards which allowed for the bank's difficulties to be spotted.He finished his presentation on the same note that he has struck for several months - that ECB monetary needs to be complemented by structural reforms in member states."The success of our measures critically depends on a number of factors outside of the realm of monetary policy.Courageous structural reforms and improvements in the competitiveness of the corporate sector are key to improving business environment."

BRUSSELS - Those who thought that a ‘no’ vote in the Scottish referendum on independence would end discussions on the United Kingdom’s institutional architecture were sadly wrong. What’s more, the outcome may indirectly influence the EU and the eurozone’s functioning.Seeking to win over undecided voters, UK politicians promised to give Scotland more decision-making powers of its own.That promise created a backlash in England, where the West Lothian question was brought up again: Scottish MPs in Westminster have a right to vote on matters like healthcare that apply in England, but not in Scotland. Conversely, English MPs have no say on Scottish healthcare decisions.British Prime Minister David Cameron responded to the discontent by promising "English votes for English laws", meaning that only English MPs would be able to vote on matters that apply solely in England.The situation is remarkably similar in the European Parliament. When the Parliament passes rules that apply exclusively to the eurozone, such as sanction mechanisms and fiscal obligations, all members of the European Parliament have an equal say.Votes from Danish and British MEPs count just as much as those from eurozone MEPs. As in England, this leads to occasional outcries about the lack of democracy.The EU’s version of the West Lothian question can be resolved. The simplest solution would be to create a committee in the European Parliament that is composed solely of eurozone MEPs.That eurozone committee would then decide on matters that solely concern the eurozone. In many ways, this kind of eurozone level democracy would be fairer than the existing arrangements.Yet the EU would not be the EU if the situation were that straightforward.Current treaty rules require the European Parliament as a whole to vote on binding EU rules, including those that apply solely to the eurozone. In addition, many non-eurozone member states have an obligation to join the common currency at a later stage. These countries should also have a say on eurozone rules.In the present situation, eurozone democracy would therefore be limited to non-binding matters, such as economic coordination under the European Semester and scrutiny of eurozone institutions (think Eurogroup and ECB). This greatly reduces the scope of eurozone level democracy.

Pragmatism in the European Parliament

Nonetheless, the matter ought to be seriously considered. As the European elections have shown, there is considerable discontent about the EU. If the EU’s West Lothian question lingers unresolved, eurosceptics like the French Front National will benefit.It is all too easy for them to criticise the democratic nature of the eurozone when British MEPs retain full say on the common currency.A eurozone committee would, of course, challenge the way the European Parliament works. MEPs like to consider themselves as defenders of the EU’s common interests, rather than merely representatives of their own constituencies.A eurozone committee would emphasize the national roots of MEPs, and risks creating a divide between the eurozone’s ins and outs as a consequence.The European Parliament should, however, not fool itself: the EU already operates at multiple speeds. MEPs ought to reflect on how they can adapt to that reality, instead of defending a unitary European project that no longer exists.Importantly, any eurozone level democracy should be as open as possible to the non-eurozone, while at the same time being as differentiated as required.This compromise could be achieved by organising it within the European Parliament. The same might not be true for other designs, such as a eurozone assembly of national parliaments.The transnational dimension of European integration furthermore risks being ignored in such alternative designs. To prevent these dangers from occurring, MEPs will have to be pragmatic in reassessing their functioning.The writer is a Senior Research Fellow at the Egmont Royal Institute for International Relations.

No alarm bells rang," the WHO said.Adding to the confusion, the affected area is notorious for outbreaks of cholera and other illnesses, and many Ebola symptoms are similar to endemic local diseases. The virus continued its silent but lethal spread until staff from the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) charity sent a report on the strange deaths to a top expert in Geneva, who suspected a haemorrhagic fever, perhaps Ebola.After spreading undetected for three months, the outbreak was finally officially declared on March 23.Only four days later, the virus had made its way to Guinea's capital Conakry, as "new cases hit like sparks from a fire landing on dry grass," the WHO said."The brushfire had begun," the UN health agency said, describing the "heart-breaking" pattern that followed.On three occasions, Guinea appeared set to quell the outbreak and began the count-down for the 21-day incubation period to pass without any new cases.But each time, "vigilance eased and the sense of emergency lapsed," the agency said, explaining how Guinea -- which has now recorded more than 1,000 cases and 632 deaths -- and the international community let down their guard.This allowed the virus, one of the deadliest known to man, to spread freely to neighbouring Liberia and Sierra Leone.Liberia was quickly engulfed by the outbreak and is today by far the hardest-hit country, with almost 1,600 deaths.Things got off to a better start in Sierra Leone, which confirmed its first Ebola case on May 24 and put the patient in isolation in Kenema the next day.She recovered without infecting anyone else at the hospital."All the right precautions were taken," WHO said.But the person who infected her -- a widely-respected traditional healer in Sierra Leone who had treated Ebola patients from Guinea -- was not tracked down, and is believed to be linked to as many as 365 Ebola deaths.By mid-June, an explosive outbreak was underway in Sierra Leone's third city of Kenema, and soon also in the capital Freetown. The country has now recorded almost 600 people killed by Ebola.Five researchers who helped to trace the cases to the healer were felled by the virus before their study was published.Many other health professionals have also died in the country, including one of the world's leading experts on haemorrhagic fevers, Sheik Humarr Kahn.

Marwan Kawasmeh and Amer Abu Eisha of Hevron, who abducted and murdered three yeshiva boys Eyal Yifrah, Gilad Sha'ar, Naftali Frenkel in June, were located and killed in exchange of gunfire early Tuesday morning.The operation was carried out by the Yamam, a special unit of the Border Police, and the IDF, in Hevron. An attempt was made to arrest the suspects but an exchange of fire developed in which they were killed.The operation was made possible by the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), which located the murderers' hideout. In the last few days, several Hamas suspects were arrested and questioned on the assumption that they were assisting the fugitives."We have been pursuing these two since the abduction,” said Judea and Samaria Division Commander Brig. Gen. Tamir Yadai. “Last night the investigation ripened as regards their location and we have been surrounding the place where they were hiding since 1:00 a.m. We killed them and there are arrests of several other collaborators.”"We began areesting suspects and at the same time we applied [IDF] 'pressure cooker' protocol on the house. It is a big house and they hid out in a secret arms store on the basement floor. The floor is not visible from the outside. At one stage they went outside and opened fire. One was shot and the other fell inside, into a hole.”"There was use of weapons, like hand grenades and the deployment of explosives that were prepared ahead of time,” he added. “We know that they have been staying in this location quite a lot in the last few days. We know for certain that they were not here the whole time. They had weapons like M-16s, a Kalachnikov and handguns, too.”Kawasmeh's close relative Hussam was arrested in Jerusalem in August for planning the attack, which was carried out physically by Marwan, along with Amer Abu-Eisha.The abduction and murder reportedly was planned by a third Kawasmeh, Mahmoud, along with Hussam, under the support of Hamas's military branch, the Al-Qassam Brigades, through their branches both in Gaza and abroad.The Brigades transferred funds via Mahmoud to purchase a car with an Israeli license plate, weapons and hideouts which were arranged in advance,according to security sources. They added that the three Israeli teens were buried on land purchased by the Kawasmeh family long before the attack. Hussam admitted in investigation to having shaven his beard off and obtained a forged passport in an attempt to flee the country to Jordan.

After going missing on June 12, Eyal Yifrah, 19, and 16-year-old classmates Gilad Sha'ar and Naftali Frenkel, were declared kidnapped the next day.Suspicion immediately fell on Hamas after intelligence pointed towards the involvement of Kawasmeh and Abu-Eisha, whose names were publicized two weeks later.An 18-day search for the three teenagers ensued, accompanied by a crackdown on Hamas in Judea and Samaria, but the search ended in tragedy after their bodies were found in field close to the Arab village of Halhul near Hevron. They were buried side-by-side in the city of Modi'in.The three boys are believed to have been murdered very shortly after being kidnapped; one source close to the murder investigation said a recording of a call made by one of the boys as he was being kidnaps provides crucial evidence that the murder had been pre-planned from the very start.The source claimed the kidnappers used a silenced weapon, indicating their attempt to actually use the gun, and dressed up as religious Jews to lure the victims into their car.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday warned the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad that it would be held to account for using chlorine gas against civilians.According to AFP, Kerry pointed to a report by the Organization for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) that concluded with "a high degree of confidence" that chlorine has been used systematically and repeatedly as a weapon in northern Syria.His comments came as Damascus said it had turned over all its chemical weapons, had cooperated fully with the OPCW and adhered to the Chemical Weapons Convention.Kerry noted that the OPCW report had cited witness reports that helicopters were used in the chlorine gas attacks, which he said "strongly points to Syrian culpability" because the rebels do not have helicopters.The report also mentioned that there were additional attacks in August which witnesses said resembled those in which chlorine gas use was confirmed, Kerry said, according to AFP."This finding, coupled with deep concerns regarding the accuracy and completeness of Syria's declaration to the OPCW, raises especially troubling concerns that continued chemical attacks on the Syrian people by the regime could occur," he said."The United States is gravely concerned about the findings in this report, which point to a violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention," added Kerry. Islamic State (IS or ISIS) is changing the Middle East, Middle Eastern affairs expert Dr. Eldad Pardo told Arutz Sheva Tuesday - and the Arab world's response to it will ripple into Israeli foreign relations as well. Pardo first related to the Iranian nuclear question, noting that cooperation with the US on the diplomatic front "is inconvenient to the Iranian regime," which opposes the US's Middle-Eastern policies in the first place."They say American proposals are not serious and that ISIS was established by the US by aiding the Syrian opposition," Pardo said. He believes that Tehran is sharpening its positions and aggrandizing its power to clarify to Washington and the West - as well as its regional neighbors - that a nuclear deal will not work unless it is a major player in its final form. "For the Iranians, ISIS is less of a threat than in the Sunni world," he noted. "This is because ISIS cannot conquer Iran - which is both strong and Shi'ite, so too with Jordan and Saudi Arabia."ISIS may still prove a threat in the long run, however, through a "war of attrition" the terrorist organization is waging by overwhelming Iran's regional partners, Syria and Lebanon.The ripple effect of ISIS - and its effect on a nuclear deal - may extend so far, he said, to interfere even with Israel's relations with the rest of the Middle East."If the United States would give up the nuclear issue, it would be dangerous for Israel and the Sunni world," Pardo stated. "Iranians want to build the ancient Iranian Empire. Kurdish fighters have issued an urgent call to arms amid warnings of an impending massacre by the Islamic State terrorist group in northern Syria.The Kurdish People's Protection Unit (YPG) has been locked in a fierce battle with IS and other Islamist groups almost since the start of Syria's civil war. Despite being relatively isolated and receiving no foreign aid from any states the YPG has proven perhaps the most effective force in pushing back against IS.But as the jihadis' focus shifts to consolidating power in northern Syria the Kurds have found themselves under fiercer attack than ever. Recent bloody clashes have seen at least 39 IS terrorists and 27 Kurdish fighters killed, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.At least 11 civilians have also been executed by IS, which has captured around 64 villages around Kobani and has advanced to within 9 miles (15 kilometers) of the town, the Observatory reported.On the way, IS has been carrying out an all too familiar ritual of brutal killings in an attempt to cow the local population into submission. Reports of gruesome public beheadings - IS's trademark mode of execution - have already been reported by refugees."Rather than a war this is a genocide operation," Ibrahim Binici, a leading member of Turkey's pro-Kurdish HDP party told Reuters. "They are going into the villages and cutting the heads of one or two people and showing them to the villagers."Binici called for international military intervention, branding the slaughter and accompanying international silence a "shameful situation for humanity," and informing journalists that five of his party's MPs will be mounting a hunger strike outside the UN's offices in Geneva.But although the US has said it is willing to launch airstrikes against IS in Syria, as it is currently doing in Iraq, the Syrian regime has so far blocked such action by demanded any military operation be carried out in cooperation with its forces. Western states view that as unacceptable, given that the Assad regime is responsible for even greater war crimes during the three and a half year civil war than IS.The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has fought an on-off insurgency against Turkey for three decades, has issued a renewed call for Kurdish youth to enlist as fighters to save Kobani. The YPG is in fact the Syrian branch of the PKK."Supporting this heroic resistance is not just a debt of honor of the Kurds but all Middle East people. Just giving support is not enough, the criterion must be taking part in the resistance," read a statement on its website."ISIL (Islamic State) fascism must drown in the blood it spills … The youth of North Kurdistan (southeast Turkey) must flow in waves to Kobani," it said.

“Assad is the root cause of ISIS,” stated on Monday Hadi al-Bahra, the President of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, at a press conference at UNHQ in New York, under the auspices of the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA).Al-Bahra, a 55 year-old, American trained engineer, explained in fluent English the dire state his country is in. “We need immediate airstrikes to stem the tide against the ISIS attacks on the Kurdish villages, as of yesterday, 200 Kurdish villages have been overrun, with 130,000 refugees, today, I believe the number of villages ransacked by ISIS is up to 300, with 200,000 refugees. We need immediate help against ISIS. We only need arms and supplies. Nobody wants ‘boots on the ground.’”Al-Bahra said immediate military and economic help were critical, “We are the first line of defense against ISIS. If they defeat the moderate opposition in Syria, nothing will stop them coming to Europe. And the longer Assad is power, the larger ISIS will grow.”Al-Bahra commands the Free Syrian Army (FSA) that is the ‘moderate’ group of Syrians that started the revolution against Assad 3½ years ago, and which has been battling ISIS for over a year.The rebel leader explained the FSA is fighting a “two-front war” against Assad to the West and ISIS to the east.He said that not only is Assad “the root cause of ISIS,” but also that Assad has become a tactical battle-field ally of ISIS. This claim echoed a New York Times article that described a similar trend in Assad’s target selection. Al-Bahra described how Assad’s drops barrel-bombs and fires scuds at FSA positions and cities, while he leaves ISIS-controlled cities untouched.”Al-Bahra even said, “while FSA were in battles with ISIS Assad’s planes where dropping bombs on our positions and left ISIS formations alone,” thus helping ISIS defeat the FSA in those battles.This shows that Assad and ISIS must be sharing battlefield-intelligence that could be detected by American intelligence satellites. So, it may also be clear to American intelligence that Assad has been bolstering ISIS.President al-Bahra explained Assad’s ‘Destroy-FSA/Bolster-ISIS’ strategy thus: by “destroying the FSA’s forces, Assad gives the West the ‘impression’ that 'It’s either ISIS, or Assad,’ and since Assad is ‘lesser of the two evils,’ go with Assad.”With 17 million Sunnis still in Syria, and only 3 million Alawites, Assad’s sectarian clan, President al-Bahra confidently stated, “We’re never going away, we’re everywhere in Syria we are the Syrian people,” and the revolution is for all Syrians to “free ourselves of a tyrant.”But the real fireworks came when asked, “Secretary Kerry has said Iran could help, How Iran could help?” President al-Bahra had a simple answer, “Iran must stop co-partnering with Assad to commit mass-murder war-crimes against the Syrian people. Iran now has Iranian sectarian militias in Syria committing war-crimes against Syrian civilians, and it is arming Assad with fuel and weapons. There is no solution without Iran stopping their war-crimes, and their sectarian influence.”President al-Bahra sketched out his vision of Syria that he stated was always a “moderate Muslim country” which respected Christianity for millennium, and where “language of Jesus was still spoken today.” He emphasized, “the Syria people want a democratic, non-sectarian peaceful country where everyone respects everyone else. We have to rethink elements as basic as space and time, to go all science fictiony on you in this sense," said Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, speaking to university students in London, Ontario.When you hear Justin saying weird things like that don't you get the vague notion that you're being played, and aren't you relieved that your children don't go to that school? I can see some young communications dweeb at Liberal headquarters betting $20 that he can get Justin to say anything because the public thinks everything Justin says is both true and totally adorable.The Justin Theory of Space-Time was obviously conceived entirely by Justin, but "conceived" is a strong word. In fact his theory sounds similar to the refrain from that animated character Buzz Lightyear, from the movie Toy Story. Buzz was always going "To infinity and beyond," a fun line coming from a child's toy. Of course Justin Trudeau is not, strictly speaking, a child. He is a 42-year-old man and, by all accounts, a very nice man. He also has a future in politics and, even more alarmingly, a present.He has also developed some new theories on how the universe works, which I'm sure will make for fascinating reading in his upcoming book, The Physics of Politics: The Black Hole that Really Sucks.Anyway, Justin seems to be rejecting the settled science pushed on us by Newton, Einstein and, more recently, Higgs. In the video he rejects the current thinking on space and time with such flair and drama that I don't need actual arguments. Is it too soon to start talking Nobel? So why undertake this serious scientific analysis of Justin's theory of space and time? I don't want to go all science fictiony on you but right now Justin Trudeau is auditioning to become the prime minister of Canada and perhaps of some solar systems too.Given that being PM is a serious job it is mildly interesting to know that his views on the laws of nature are, shall we say, unothodox. Perhaps at some point he'll reveal his views on the economy, the Income Tax Act or relations with Taiwan. We already know that Prime Minister Harper sees the gravity in just about every situation. Gravity is a good thing in a leader, and in a universe. Justin doesn't seem to like those laws so he's rethinking them, but in this case "rethinking" is obviously just a figure of speech.Anyway, I may be coming around to Justin's point of view. I was rethinking space and time just yesterday, by which I mean 50 years into the future. I don't want to spoil the ending, but it works out well for the kids, though it's not without bumps.God help us, some day Justin might be our prime minister. Don't be surprised if his first initiative is to try to repeal the law of gravity. Dark matter, anti-matter, doesn't matter -- somehow we would survive his rejection of the "thinking that got us to this place."
