Canberra (AFP) - The hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 will focus on the southern part of the existing search zone after a new clue to the plane's possible location emerged, Australia said on Thursday. Fresh information suggested the jet "may have turned south" earlier than thought, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said.The detail came to light following "further refinement" of satellite data and as investigators attempted to map the plane's position during a failed attempt to contact it earlier in its flight path."The search area remains the same, but some of the information that we now have suggests to us that areas a little further to the south -- within the search area, but a little further to the south -- are of particular interest and priority in the search area," he said.His comments came as Australia and Malaysia inked a memorandum of understanding in Canberra over the next phase of the hunt for the plane, which disappeared on March 8 with 239 people on board en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.The signing followed a meeting between the two nations and China's Vice-Minister of Transport He Jianzhong.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Airlines System Bhd (MAS) has requested for a suspension in the trading of its shares on Bursa Malaysia's Main Market from 9am to 5pm today, pending a restructuring announcement at a press conference at 3pm today.The national carrier said its major shareholder, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, would make an announcement in relation to the details of a proposed restructuring of the airline.Analysts view the restructuring as one-of-its-kind ever seen in history of restructuring in the country.Earlier, Astro Awani reported the pre-suspension price for MAS was 24 sen and the company’s share price had declined as much as 23 percent this year.If the proposal takes shape, it will create a transaction worth almost RM1.38 billion. Khazanah will also acquire the shares that is doesn’t own in MAS at 27 sen per share.Analysts expect Khazanah to adopt staff resizing, reduce two non-profitable routes to China and Europe and change in top management positions.Earlier, MAS reported a net loss of RM307.04 million in its second quarter and said its earnings in the second half will be affected by lower passenger bookings after MH370 and MH17 tragedies.

KUALA LUMPUR: The RM6 billion investment funds injected by Khazanah Nasional Berhad (Khazanah) into the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Recovery Plan is not a bailout but will be recovered with the re-listing of a more profitable and sustainable national carrier.This was stressed by Khazanah managing director Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar to reporters at a press briefing during the unveiling of the 12-point restructuring plan for the airline entitled "Rebuilding a National Icon: The MAS Recovery Plan" in KL City Centre here today.He said the plan aims to return the carrier to profitability within three years."We have modelled this (plan) and we believe that MAS will be able to recover and make profit, provided they take the 'medicine' prescribed by Khazanah," said Azman. He reminded MAS that if they did not undertake the strict conditions Khazanah provided in the recovery plan, the RM6 billion will not be given.Commenting on the recovery plan itself, Azman said he was confident that the plan will work as it involves starting over with a completely new slate.He said the reset contracts could sustain a competitive business structure as well as the structure for MAS to compete properly.“Ironically and sadly, the recent tragic events and the ongoing difficulties in MAS had created the perfect storm to allow this restructuring to take place.“We need to have a fresh start because the current MAS, unfortunately, has a core structure that does not work and the revenue has been consistently below its cost,” said Azman.Azman also said Khazanah was looking to hire either a Malaysian leadership talent or a global aviation specialist to helm the new MAS as CEO.When asked if whether Khazanah would use a new name for the new MAS, he said that was something beyond Khazanah. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon on Friday identified the pilot killed in the crash of an F-15C fighter in Virginia as Lieutenant Colonel Morris "Moose" Fontenot Jr., a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Fontenot, an F-15 instructor and combat veteran, was piloting the Massachusetts Air National Guard plane when it went down on Wednesday in a remote area of western Virginia. Searchers found his body on Thursday.He was flying the single-seat Boeing Co fighter to New Orleans to receive a system upgrade. Fontenot reported an in-flight emergency shortly before contact was lost with the Washington flight controller, and the crash is under investigation.Fontenot was the inspector general of the Massachusetts Air National Guard's 104th Fighter Wing, stationed at Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield.He was a 1996 Air Force Academy graduate and a former squadron commander. GENEVA (Reuters) - Three million Syrian refugees will have registered in neighboring countries as of Friday, but many remain trapped by the advance of Islamist militants or are having difficulty in reaching open border crossings, the United Nations said.Syrians desperate to leave their war-engulfed homeland are forced to pay hefty bribes at armed checkpoints proliferating along Syria's borders, or to smugglers, the U.N. refugee agency said.The record figure is one million refugees more than a year ago, while a further 6.5 million are displaced within Syria, meaning that "almost half of all Syrians have now been forced to abandon their homes and flee for their lives," it said."The Syrian crisis has become the biggest humanitarian emergency of our era, yet the world is failing to meet the needs of refugees and the countries hosting them," Antonio Guterres, U.N. TOKYO (AP) — Japan's Defense Ministry on Friday requested money for F-35 stealth fighter jets as part of its biggest-ever budget to bolster its ability to defend remote southern islands, including ones also claimed by an increasingly assertive China.Plans to buy P-1 surveillance aircraft and "Global Hawk" drones, as well as an Aegis radar-equipped destroyer, are also part of the 5 trillion yen ($48 billion) budget for the year beginning in April 2015, a 3.5 percent increase from the current year.The budget reflects a new defense strategy and guidelines released in December as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pushes to give the military a greater role. Tensions with China have risen over a cluster of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea claimed by both countries.To allow Japan a more assertive military posture, Abe's Cabinet in July approved a reinterpretation of the country's U.S.-drafted war-renouncing constitution so that the country can defend American and other foreign troops under attack. Of the total number of those registered as missing over the years, nearly 70,000 remain missing without trace, according to the government’s official register.Many are victims of five decades of armed conflict between government troops, right-wing paramilitary groups and leftist rebels, while others are victims of ongoing drug-turf wars."The problem of missing people in Colombia is as widespread as it is silent," Jordi Raich, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Colombia said in a statement on Friday."We know many have disappeared because of the conflict and armed violence. The uncertainty and suffering of families which comes from not knowing the whereabouts of their loved ones is unacceptable."Government forensic teams and around 20 state prosecutors from the attorney-general's office are searching for the disappeared and exhuming bodies across Colombia.The Colombian government offers up to $8,600 in compensation for relatives of those who have disappeared as a result of the conflict, and it recently adopted a protocol on handing back bodies to relatives to ensure they are honored properly and their rights to a private or public funeral respected.But the government must do more to find and identify the tens of thousands of people missing in Colombia, raise awareness about the largely invisible problem, and make it easier for relatives of the missing to seek and get help from authorities, the ICRC in Colombia said.

DAKAR/CONAKRY (Reuters) - The West African state of Senegal became the fifth country to be touched by the world's worst Ebola outbreak on Friday, while riots broke out in neighboring Guinea's remote southeast where infection rates are rising fast.In the latest sign that the outbreak of the virus, which has already killed at least 1,550 people, is spinning out of control, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that Ebola cases rose last week at the fastest pace since the epidemic began in West Africa in March.The epidemic has defied efforts by governments to control it, prompting the leading charity fighting the outbreak, Medicins Sans Frontieres, to call for the U.N. Security Council to take charge of efforts to stop it.Including the fatalities, more than 3,000 have been infected since the virus was detected in the remote jungles of southeastern Guinea in March, and quickly spread across the border to Liberia and Sierra Leone. The event was described as being not highly explosive — and thus not producing much of the fine ash that can affect aircraft engines.The eruption began just after midnight local time (0000 GMT Friday; 2000 EDT Thursday) and ended at 0400 GMT Friday (midnight EDT Thursday).The airspace was closed three nautical miles around the eruption area up to 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) — meaning it did not affect commercial flights flying over Iceland. The aviation code for Bardarbunga was originally raised to red — meaning that an eruption was underway — but was lowered to the lesser orange level as there was no significant ash production, the Civil Protection Department said.The so-called fissure eruption was a crack that opened up above a magma intrusion. Canberra (AFP) - The hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 will focus on the southern part of the existing search zone after a new clue to the plane's possible location emerged, Australia said on Thursday. Fresh information suggested the jet "may have turned south" earlier than thought, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said.The detail came to light following "further refinement" of satellite data and as investigators attempted to map the plane's position during a failed attempt to contact it earlier in its flight path."The search area remains the same, but some of the information that we now have suggests to us that areas a little further to the south -- within the search area, but a little further to the south -- are of particular interest and priority in the search area," he said.His comments came as Australia and Malaysia inked a memorandum of understanding in Canberra over the next phase of the hunt for the plane, which disappeared on March 8 with 239 people on board en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.The signing followed a meeting between the two nations and China's Vice-Minister of Transport He Jianzhong.

The plane is believed to have crashed into the southern Indian Ocean far off the west coast of Australia after mysteriously diverting off-course, but a massive air, sea and underwater search has failed to find any wreckage.Experts have now used technical data to finalise its most likely resting place deep under the Indian Ocean and are preparing for a more intense underwater search, beginning next month.It will focus on a dauntingly vast stretch of ocean measuring 60,000 square kilometres (23,000 square miles).Truss said that during efforts to map MH370's location when Malaysia Airlines tried to contact the jet, it was "suggested to us that the aircraft may have turned south a little earlier than we had previously expected"."After MH370 disappeared from the radar, Malaysia Airlines ground staff sought to make contact using a satellite phone. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Airlines System Bhd (MAS) has requested for a suspension in the trading of its shares on Bursa Malaysia's Main Market from 9am to 5pm today, pending a restructuring announcement at a press conference at 3pm today.The national carrier said its major shareholder, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, would make an announcement in relation to the details of a proposed restructuring of the airline.Analysts view the restructuring as one-of-its-kind ever seen in history of restructuring in the country.Earlier, Astro Awani reported the pre-suspension price for MAS was 24 sen and the company’s share price had declined as much as 23 percent this year.If the proposal takes shape, it will create a transaction worth almost RM1.38 billion. Khazanah will also acquire the shares that is doesn’t own in MAS at 27 sen per share.Analysts expect Khazanah to adopt staff resizing, reduce two non-profitable routes to China and Europe and change in top management positions.Earlier, MAS reported a net loss of RM307.04 million in its second quarter and said its earnings in the second half will be affected by lower passenger bookings after MH370 and MH17 tragedies.

KUALA LUMPUR: The RM6 billion investment funds injected by Khazanah Nasional Berhad (Khazanah) into the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Recovery Plan is not a bailout but will be recovered with the re-listing of a more profitable and sustainable national carrier.This was stressed by Khazanah managing director Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar to reporters at a press briefing during the unveiling of the 12-point restructuring plan for the airline entitled "Rebuilding a National Icon: The MAS Recovery Plan" in KL City Centre here today.He said the plan aims to return the carrier to profitability within three years."We have modelled this (plan) and we believe that MAS will be able to recover and make profit, provided they take the 'medicine' prescribed by Khazanah," said Azman. He reminded MAS that if they did not undertake the strict conditions Khazanah provided in the recovery plan, the RM6 billion will not be given.Commenting on the recovery plan itself, Azman said he was confident that the plan will work as it involves starting over with a completely new slate.He said the reset contracts could sustain a competitive business structure as well as the structure for MAS to compete properly.“Ironically and sadly, the recent tragic events and the ongoing difficulties in MAS had created the perfect storm to allow this restructuring to take place.“We need to have a fresh start because the current MAS, unfortunately, has a core structure that does not work and the revenue has been consistently below its cost,” said Azman.Azman also said Khazanah was looking to hire either a Malaysian leadership talent or a global aviation specialist to helm the new MAS as CEO.When asked if whether Khazanah would use a new name for the new MAS, he said that was something beyond Khazanah. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon on Friday identified the pilot killed in the crash of an F-15C fighter in Virginia as Lieutenant Colonel Morris "Moose" Fontenot Jr., a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Fontenot, an F-15 instructor and combat veteran, was piloting the Massachusetts Air National Guard plane when it went down on Wednesday in a remote area of western Virginia. Searchers found his body on Thursday.He was flying the single-seat Boeing Co fighter to New Orleans to receive a system upgrade. Fontenot reported an in-flight emergency shortly before contact was lost with the Washington flight controller, and the crash is under investigation.Fontenot was the inspector general of the Massachusetts Air National Guard's 104th Fighter Wing, stationed at Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield.He was a 1996 Air Force Academy graduate and a former squadron commander. BRUSSELS - Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said Ukraine is free to pursue membership of the Western alliance despite Russian opposition.He told press in Brussels on Friday (29 August): “I’m not going to interfere in political discussions in Ukraine. But let me remind you of Nato’s decision at the Bucharest summit in 2008, according to which Ukraine ‘will become a member of Nato,’ provided of course, Ukraine so wishes and fulfills the necessary criteria”.“We adhere to the principle that each and every country has the right to decide [its foreign and security policy] for itself without interference from the outside”.Rasmussen spoke after an emergency meeting of Nato ambassadors with Ukraine’s envoy to the Western bloc.He also spoke after Ukraine PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk earlier on Friday promised to pass a bill to scrap Ukraine’s non-aligned status. For their part, EU foreign ministers meeting in Milan on Friday and Saturday will discuss whether to impose further economic sanctions on Russia.EU leaders in Brussels on Saturday will then decide how to go ahead, after hearing from Ukrainan President Poroshenko who is to join them late in the afternoon.France, Germany, Italy, and the UK, as well as Nordic and Baltic states, have spoken out in strong terms on Russia’s latest escalation.Going into the Milan meeting on Friday, Denmark’s foreign minister said: “It’s not that I think sanctions will solve all the problems. It’s that I think we [the EU] cannot allow such Russian steps without a reaction”.But other member states, including Hungary and Slovakia, have questioned whether EU sanctions are doing anything to stop the Kremlin.Some EU diplomats meeting in Brussels on Thursday said EU institutions should do an “impact assessment” of the sanctions war on EU economies before going further. France, despite its rhetoric, is also wary of reopening the discussion on whether to deliver €1.2bn of warships to Russia.An EU diplomat told this website EU leaders are unlikely to agree on concrete steps immediately. “The most likely result [of the EU summit] is for leaders to task the EEAS [the EU foreign service] and the EC [the European Commission] with preparing new sanctions”, the source said.

BRUSSELS - Germany, France, and Italy have indicated they are willing to impose extra sanctions on Russia due to its overt “invasion” of Ukraine.Speaking to press in Berlin on Thursday (28 August), German chancellor Angela Merkel said the EU summit in Brussels this weekend will consider how to react to the “increased presence of Russian soldiers” in Ukraine in recent days.“We have repeatedly made clear that any further escalation must of course lead to a discussion about further sanctions”, she noted.Her office added that she called US president Barack Obama the same day and that they “agreed that such [Russian] behaviour should not remain without consequences”.French president Francois Hollande in a speech to his ambassadors in Paris on Thursday morning said the Russian incursion is “intolerable and unacceptable”, noting that EU sanctions should be “increased, if [Russia] continues to escalate”.Italian PM Matteo Renzi, who phoned Russian leader Vladimir Putin, said afterwards in a communique that Russia’s actions are “an intolerable escalation whose consequences would be very serious”.Germany, France, and Italy have in the past blocked more robust EU action due to their business links with Russia, while Merkel last week had indicated that she was willing to make concessions on EU-Ukraine free trade if Putin backs off.The more hawkish Western leaders also spoke out on Thursday.Obama told press in Washington: “We are not taking military action to solve the Ukrainian problem. What we’re doing is to mobilise the international community to apply pressure on Russia”.“In our consultations with our European allies and partners, my expectation is, that we will take additional steps”.UK leader David Cameron said: “We urge Russia to pursue a different path … If [she] does not, then she should be in no doubt that there will be further consequences”.Estonian president Toomas Ilves called Russia’s actions “an undeclared war” on Ukraine, adding that “Western allies should agree on their part on the need to intervene in an even more determined way”.The harsh words were echoed at a snap meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) in New York.The German UN embassy noted that out of the 15 UNSC members “all but one [Russia] … condemn the recent military escalation”. Alexis Lamek, the French UN envoy, said Russia’s actions “will not be tolerated”.Samantha Power, the US ambassador to the UN, noted: “The most important question for us now is not what we should say to Russia. Nato also on Thursday released fresh satellite images of Russian mobile artillery and other units on the move inside its neighbour.A senior Nato officer, Dutch brigadier general Nico Tak, told press there are “substantial numbers of Russian combat troops inside Ukraine”, adding that “Russia's ultimate aim is to alleviate pressure on separatist fighters in order to prolong this conflict indefinitely”.Any extra EU sanctions are likely to be matched by Nato action at its upcoming summit in Wales next week.The alliance’s secretary general has said it will create a rapid reaction force with permanent facilities in eastern European Nato states to counter potential Russian aggression against countries such as Estonia or Latvia.Russia’s dismembering of Ukraine has also caused alarm in Finland and Sweden. The two countries, which have stayed out of Nato in order not to antagonise Russia, said this week they will sign “host nation” agreements with the alliance to enable it to station troops on their territory.Finland on Thursday complained that Russian military planes keep entering its airspace in an apparent campaign of intimidation.Helsinki put the Finnish airforce on alert, with foreign minister Erkki Tuomioja saying: “The violations must stop”.“Three airspace violations within a week is a lot and unfortunately they [Russia] don’t really have a good explanation. What we know is they are done somewhat on purpose. We don’t know what that purpose is”, Finnish defence minister Carl Haglund added.

Of the total number of those registered as missing over the years, nearly 70,000 remain missing without trace, according to the government’s official register.Many are victims of five decades of armed conflict between government troops, right-wing paramilitary groups and leftist rebels, while others are victims of ongoing drug-turf wars."The problem of missing people in Colombia is as widespread as it is silent," Jordi Raich, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Colombia said in a statement on Friday."We know many have disappeared because of the conflict and armed violence. The uncertainty and suffering of families which comes from not knowing the whereabouts of their loved ones is unacceptable."Government forensic teams and around 20 state prosecutors from the attorney-general's office are searching for the disappeared and exhuming bodies across Colombia.The Colombian government offers up to $8,600 in compensation for relatives of those who have disappeared as a result of the conflict, and it recently adopted a protocol on handing back bodies to relatives to ensure they are honored properly and their rights to a private or public funeral respected.But the government must do more to find and identify the tens of thousands of people missing in Colombia, raise awareness about the largely invisible problem, and make it easier for relatives of the missing to seek and get help from authorities, the ICRC in Colombia said.

DAKAR/CONAKRY (Reuters) - The West African state of Senegal became the fifth country to be touched by the world's worst Ebola outbreak on Friday, while riots broke out in neighboring Guinea's remote southeast where infection rates are rising fast.In the latest sign that the outbreak of the virus, which has already killed at least 1,550 people, is spinning out of control, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that Ebola cases rose last week at the fastest pace since the epidemic began in West Africa in March.The epidemic has defied efforts by governments to control it, prompting the leading charity fighting the outbreak, Medicins Sans Frontieres, to call for the U.N. Security Council to take charge of efforts to stop it.Including the fatalities, more than 3,000 have been infected since the virus was detected in the remote jungles of southeastern Guinea in March, and quickly spread across the border to Liberia and Sierra Leone. It has also touched Nigeria where six people have died.Senegal's first case is a student from Guinea.Senegalese Health Minister Awa Marie Coll Seck said the man turned up for treatment at a hospital in the capital Dakar on Tuesday, concealing the fact that he had had close contact with victims in his home country. Tests at the Pasteur Institute in Dakar showed he had the disease."We are tracing his whole itinerary and also identifying anyone who had contact with the patient, who now that he has been diagnosed is much more cooperative and supplied all the necessary information," the minister said.A Health Ministry official, who asked not to be named, said that the 21-year-old crossed into Senegal via its southern border with Guinea and had been living in the densely populated Dakar suburb of Parcelles Assainies for three weeks. He added that the man appeared to have a good chance of recovering.The man had been under surveillance by health authorities in Guinea because of his contact with Ebola victims but escaped to Senegal, Seck said.Residents in Dakar reacted with anger and concern. "When you are sick, why do you leave your own country to export the disease to another?" asked radio host Taib Soce on RFM, a popular station owned by Senegalese music star Youssou N'dour.In an attempt to prevent the spread of the virus, Senegal last week banned flights to and from three of the affected countries and shut its land border with Guinea.The country, a regional hub for U.N. agencies and aid groups, has also refused to give clearance for U.N. aid flights to Ebola-hit countries in a move that humanitarian workers say is hampering their ability to respond to the epidemic.
CATASTROPHE WARNING
The director of the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) warned on Friday of a "catastrophe" if emergency action were not taken immediately to reverse the trend of rising cases."There is time to avoid a catastrophe but only if immediate and urgent action is taken at every level," Tom Frieden said in the Sierra Leone capital Freetown.The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday that the actual number of Ebola cases could be up to four times higher than reported and said 20,000 people in total could be infected before the outbreak ends.In the remote southeastern Guinean city of Nzerekore, riots broke out on Thursday night over rumors that health workers had infected people with Ebola, a Red Cross official and residents said.The government of Guinea says it has the epidemic under control, but the number of cases has flared up in southern Guinea, a trend the government blames on people spilling over the borders from Liberia and Sierra Leone.A crowd of young men, some armed with clubs and knives, set up barricades across Nzerekore on Thursday and threatened to attack the hospital before security forces moved in to restore order. Gunshots were fired and several people were injured, said Youssouf Traore, president of the Guinean Red Cross."A rumor, which was totally false, spread that we had sprayed the market in order to transmit the virus to locals," Traore said. "People revolted and resorted to violence, prompting soldiers to intervene." Local Red Cross workers had to flee to the military camp with their medical equipment. Another resident said the security forces were preventing people leaving their neighborhoods overnight. More than 400 people have died in Guinea, though the infection rate is slower than in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The WHO, on Thursday, unveiled a $490 million road map to bring the outbreak under control over the next nine months.The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said it may give more support to affected countries. "We're working on a financing package subject to the approval of the IMF Executive Board to help Liberia along with Guinea and Sierra Leone mitigate any socio-economic impacts of the epidemic," IMF Liberia representative Charles Amo-Yartey said on Friday.Scientists reported on Friday that in tests the experimental Ebola drug ZMapp had cured all 18 lab monkeys infected with the virus.In Freetown, a new WHO-backed mobile laboratory opened this week, speeding up the time needed to test suspected cases.But often financial pledges have not translated into more clinics and staff on the ground, said Jorge Castilla, epidemiologist with the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department."I've seen many declarations, I see treatment centers on the maps but I know they are not working," he said in an interview after a trip to the affected countries.Suspicion of healthcare workers has dogged government responses to the Ebola outbreak across West Africa.Frightened by the sight of healthcare workers clad from head to toe in plastic protective gear and wearing protective masks, many locals have shunned their assistance, often preferring to die in their own homes.So far, more than 120 healthcare workers have died in the epidemic. REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Icelandic authorities briefly raised the aviation warning code to red Friday after a small fissure eruption near Bardarbunga volcano, but no volcanic ash was detected by the radar system.The eruption took place the Holuhraun lava field, five kilometers (three miles) north of Dyngjujoekull glacier, Iceland's Meteorological Office said. The event was described as being not highly explosive — and thus not producing much of the fine ash that can affect aircraft engines.The eruption began just after midnight local time (0000 GMT Friday; 2000 EDT Thursday) and ended at 0400 GMT Friday (midnight EDT Thursday).The airspace was closed three nautical miles around the eruption area up to 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) — meaning it did not affect commercial flights flying over Iceland. The aviation code for Bardarbunga was originally raised to red — meaning that an eruption was underway — but was lowered to the lesser orange level as there was no significant ash production, the Civil Protection Department said.The so-called fissure eruption was a crack that opened up above a magma intrusion. It didn't produce any significant ash.The eruption raised concerns because of one in 2010, when Iceland's Eyjafjallajoekull volcano erupted and sparked a week of international aviation chaos. Thousands of flights were canceled when aviation officials closed Europe's air space for five days, fearing that volcanic ash could harm jet engines.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A volcanic eruption in Papua New Guinea on Friday sent smoke and ash spewing high over the South Pacific island nation, leading some aircraft to alter their flight paths.Mount Tavurvur on East New Britain Island erupted hours before dawn, a bulletin from the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory said.There have been no reports of injuries.Qantas said that it was altering the path of a handful of international flights in the area, but that it would add only about five minutes to their scheduled time."Flight paths between Sydney and Narita (Tokyo) and Sydney and Shanghai have been altered as a result of the volcanic ash cloud over Rabaul in eastern Papua New Guinea," Qantas spokeswoman Sarah Algar told Reuters."The QF21, QF22 and QF130 will now fly over central Papua New Guinea to avoid the cloud."Authorities have not issued an evacuation order for the town closest to the volcano, Rabaul, which was destroyed in 1994 during a previous but more severe eruption."People still live here, we have to get on with our daily lives," Rabaul Hotel employee Susie McGrade told Australia's ABC radio."We're up on the rooves, cleaning off the ash, we've got to save our property, try and get back to normal, so what can we do?
