POISONED WATERS

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land,(EARTH) because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2  By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3  Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

ZEPHANIAH 1:2-3
2  I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3  I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.

EZEKIEL 32:6-9
6  I will also water with thy blood the land wherein thou swimmest, even to the mountains; and the rivers shall be full of thee.
7  And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.
8  All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord GOD.
9  I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known.

REVELATION 8:8-11
8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood:(bitter,Poisoned) and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.(poisoned)

REVELATION 16:3-7
3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.(enviromentalists won't like this result)
4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
6 For they(False World Church and Dictator) have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.

Red flags raised years before B.C. mine-tailings spill, consultant says-Andrea Woo and Alexandra Posadzki-VANCOUVER — The Globe and Mail-Published Tuesday, Aug. 05 2014, 3:40 PM EDT-Last updated Wednesday, Aug. 06 2014, 4:07 PM EDT

A tailings-pond breach in central British Columbia spewed enough waste water to fill 2,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools into the province’s pristine waterways and triggered a local state of emergency – but a consultant who worked with the mining company says red flags were raised years earlier.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/british-columbia/bc-mine-had-issues-with-rising-waste-water-ahead-of-breach-consultant-says/article19920040/

The spill from Imperial Metals’ Mount Polley copper/gold mine in B.C.’s Cariboo region on Monday happened just weeks after the mining company asked provincial authorities for permission to increase the amount of treated waste water it could release from the tailings pond. Ministry officials said in a statement on Tuesday they were considering the request when the breach occurred. On Tuesday, with the spill appearing to have stabilized, Imperial Metals president Brian Kynoch apologized, calling the event “a gut-wrenching experience.”“If you asked me two weeks ago if that could happen, I would have said it couldn’t happen,” he said at a media update in a community hall in Likely, B.C. “I know that for our company, it’s going to take a long time to earn the community’s trust back.”The tailings dam breached early on Monday morning, prompting the Cariboo Regional District to issue a strict water use ban for the Quesnel Lake, Cariboo Creek, Hazeltine Creek and Polley Lake areas. It was eventually expanded to include the entire Quesnel and Cariboo Rivers systems right to the Fraser River – an arterial waterway known for its large salmon runs. The district advised against humans or livestock drinking the water; it said swimming and other activities “are at your own risk.”According to preliminary data from Environment Canada’s 2013 National Pollutant Release Inventory, the Mount Polley mine disposed of substances including arsenic (406,122 kg in 2013), lead (177,041 kg) and mercury (3,114 kg). Mr. Kynoch attempted to alleviate fears of a contaminated water supply, saying the discharged tailings water “is very close to drinking water quality.”“Specifically, mercury has never been detected in our water and arsenic levels are about one-fifth of drinking water quality,” he said. “We regularly perform toxicity tests and we know this water is not toxic to rainbow trout.”When asked why then a water ban was put into effect, Mr. Kynoch said it was a precautionary measure. As many as 300 people have been forced to use bottled water and to avoid bathing or giving pets and livestock tap water as a result of tailings pond burst. Residents’ worries go beyond environmental – some say the impact will include lost jobs in tourism and mining.Darlene Biggs, who owns the High Country Inn in Likely, said businesses in the community are “doomed,” and many young residents will not be able to find jobs in the area and will be forced to move away. “It’s going to stop our tourism industry,” Ms. Biggs said. “It’s going to stop the town because none of these kids are going to be able to work here any more. What’s going to bring people into Likely? You can’t swim in our lake at this point. And you can’t fish. It’s going to really, really hurt us.”Brian Olding, president of environmental planning company Brian Olding & Associates Ltd., was hired as an independent consultant in 2011 to review a technical report from Imperial Metals, which at the time was seeking an effluent discharge permit for the Mount Polley mine.“We went through it and found discrepancies and provided recommendations,” Mr. Olding said. Those recommendations included developing a sedimentation pond for testing water from the tailings pond, and a ground water monitoring system so the mine could detect any leaks from the tailings pond. The mine, under no legal obligation to act on recommendations, did not follow through on all of them, Mr. Olding said. The company did receive an effluent release permit, allowing it to discharge some water, but it was seeking another permit that would allow it to discharge more water by treating it first.“They know that they have faced a problem – a concern with more water coming in than water going out,” Mr. Olding said. “If they had started discharging the water and treating it some time ago, then it would take the pressures off the dam. … Clearly, a buildup of water is not a good thing.”B.C. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett said government and company officials will get to the bottom of what happened and make sure it does not happen again.“We don’t know how bad, we don’t know the quality of the water that was in the tailings pond,” he said. “I am advised it was fairly high quality water and I hope that turns out to be the case.”Gerald MacBurney, a foreman at the dam for seven years before he recently quit, said the dam was breached last May and that weakened the whole system.“ When you get a breach, there’s more than one spot it breached. It weakened the whole system,” he said in an interview. “And that’s where it popped, right where it was breached. ... I knew it was going to burst.”An emotional Mr. Kynock flatly denied the claim: “The dam has never failed before,” he said. The Ministry of Environment has completed its water sampling of the area and has shipped samples off for analysis. Results of the tests – which will look at pH levels and the potential presence of metals and other contaminants – could take between two and four days. The Cariboo Regional District has trucked in water to Likely, said district chair Al Richmond. “We set up a tank [Monday] night and we will fill that up, so that folks can come fill their bottles there.”Mr. Richmond said the district would ask Imperial Metals about Brian Olding & Associates Ltd.’s 2011 report at a meeting on Tuesday.“That report identified some concerns. We’ll be asking the Mount Polley people what they’ve done with that report.”With a report from the Canadian Press-Follow us on Twitter: Alexandra Posadzki @alexposadzki, Andrea Woo

Palestinian victims describe being used as shields by Hamas

Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. According to the victims, those who tried to object were shot in the legs by Hamas.

The following is the full text of the comments by Hamas representative Fathi Hammad months before the war, articulating the Hamas ideology to use civilians as human shields for Hamas fighters:"For the Palestinian people death has become an industry, at which women excel and so do all people on this land: the elderly excel, the Jihad fighters excel, and the children excel. Accordingly [Palestinians] created a human shield of women, children, the elderly and the Jihad fighters against the Zionist bombing machine, as if they were saying to the Zionist enemy: 'We desire death as you desire life.'"

ZEPHANIAH 2:1-7
1 Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired;
2  Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’S anger come upon you.
3  Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger.
4  For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: they shall drive out Ashdod at the noon day, and Ekron shall be rooted up.(ITS NO ACCIDENT THAT IN THIS GAZA WAR ITS ASHKELON-ASHDOD AND THE MURDERER HAMAS IN GAZA WERE MOST OF THE BOMBING ARE)(THIS IS PROPHECY COMING TO PASS BIGTIME)
5  Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast,(GAZA) the nation of the Cherethites! the word of the LORD is against you; O Canaan, the land of the Philistines,(PALESTINIANS) I will even destroy thee, that there shall be no inhabitant.
6  And the sea coast (GAZA) shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks.
7  And the coast (GAZA) shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah;(ISRAEL) they shall feed thereupon: in the houses of Ashkelon shall they lie down in the evening: for the LORD their God shall visit them, and turn away their captivity.(BY THIS PROPHECY I PREDICT ISRAEL WILL RETAKE GAZA SO ISRAELIS AROUND THE WORLD CAN IMMIGRATE THERE AND BUILD HOMES AND LIVE)

ISAIAH 14:29-32
29  Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina,(ARABS-PALESTINIANS) because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.(BOMBS)(WARFARE)
30  And the firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety: and I will kill thy root with famine, and he shall slay thy remnant.
31  Howl, O gate; cry, O city; thou, whole Palestina,(ARABS) art dissolved: for there shall come from the north a smoke, and none shall be alone in his appointed times.
32  What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the LORD hath founded Zion,(JERUSALEM) and the poor of his people shall trust in it.

EZEKIEL 39:11-21
11  And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog (RUSSIA-ARAB-MUSLIMS) a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.(THE ARAB-MUSLIM-RUSSIA BURRIAL SPOT WILL BE EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN THE JORDAN VALLEY)
12  And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
13  Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14  And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15  And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog.
16  And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.
17  And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.
18  Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19  And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20  Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21  And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.

UPDATE AUGUST 07,14-10:25AM
WELL INSTEAD OF A FLOTILLA TURKEY WANTS AN AIR CORRIDOR WERE THEY CLAIM THEY WANT TO TAKE WOUNDED GAZANS TO TURKEY.THIS WOULD BE A GREAT WAY TO SMUGGLE WEAPONS TO HAMAS LIKE I SUGGESTED AUGUST 2ND IN ONE OF MY COMMENTS.HERE IT IS WHAT I WROTE.

UPDATE AUGUST 02,14-01:45PM
MOUTHPIECE BARGHOUTI WAS ON CNN AGAIN.AS USUAL COMPLAINING ABOUT ISRAEL. SAYING ISRAEL HAS KILLED 1,600 PLUS WOMEN-CHILDREN.ISRAEL HAS LOST THE WAR-ITS REDRAWING TROOPS.AND THAT ISRAEL HAS TO ABIDE BY A CEASE-FIRE.A CEASE-FIRE IS WHEN NO TROOPS WOULD HAVE BEEN IN GAZA HE SAYS.THE PALESTINIAN-HAMAS NEGOTIATORS ARE GOING TO EGYPT TO TALK. SURE NOW THE MURDERERS HAMAS-PALESTINIANS CAN TRY TO ENCOURAGE AND BRIBE EGYPT INTO FORCING ISRAEL INTO A CEASE-FIRE.BUT WHY I REALLY THINK HAMAS-PAL WENT EARLY ARE NOT TO TALK CEASE-FIRE.BUT TO TRY TO GET EGYPT CONVINCED TO LET THEM REBUILD THEIR TUNNELS AGAIN- SINCE ISRAEL DESTROYED MOST OF THEM THIS TIME.AND THE 2 WILL TRY TO WANT EGYPT TO WORK WITH IRAN-SYRIA-LEBANON-TURKEY AND QATAR TO QUICKLY PUT SUPPLIES OF WEAPONS TOGETHER SO WHEN ISRAEL FINALLY DOES A CEASE-FIRE THAT THE ARABS-HAMAS WON'T BREAK.THEN WHILE THAT 72 HOUR CEASE-FIRE WOULD BE ON DISQUISED AS AN AID PAUSE.THEN IRAN-SYRIA-LEBANON-TURKEY AND QATAR CAN SEND OVER WEAPONS TO HAMAS-ARABS TO RESTOCK.OR SINCE TURKEY IS COMING WITH ANOTHER FLOTILLA TO ISRAEL SHORTLY.THE ARABS-HAMAS WILL SCHEME THAT THE FLOTILLA AND THE CEASE- FIRE HAPPEN AT THE SAME TIME.SO TURKEY CAN SLIP ALL THE WEAPONS FROM THE OTHER ARAB-MUSLIMS ON TURKEYS SHIP.AND GO TO GAZA WITH THE WEAPONS UNDER A GUISE OF THE CEASE-FIRE.WE GOTTA WATCH VERY CLOSELY IF TURKEYS FLOTILLA HAPPENS EXACTLY WHEN THE 72 HOUR OR WHATEVER CEASE- FIRE OCCURS.IF IT DOES WE KNOW THESE TALKS IN EGYPT WERE SCHEMING TO GET WEAPONS INTO GAZA INSTEAD- DISQUISED AS CEASE-FIRE TALKS IN EGYPT. AND NOW WE FIND OUT THAT THE ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY ISRAEL BOMBED WAS WERE HAMAS WAS BUILDING WEAPONS FROM.ISRAEL SAID THEY KILLED 300-500 HAMAS LEADERS-MEMBERS.OF THE 1,650 POOR ARABS KILLED.AS THE WORLD AND MEDIA SAY.AND 63 ISRAELIS CHAMPIONS KILLED IN THIS WAR-NOT PEACE KEEPING MISSION.

Turkey seeks 'air corridor' to treat Gaza wounded-Aug. 7, 2014 5:05 AM EDT

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutogolu says his country wants to establish an air corridor to bring seriously wounded people from Gaza to Turkey for treatment. In a television interview late Wednesday, Davutoglu said either Israel or Egypt would need to make an airport available for Turkey's use. If that's not possible, he says Turkey would set up a field hospital in the region to treat the wounded. Davutoglu said: "We want to build an air corridor made up of air ambulances to bring the seriously wounded."Nearly 1,900 Palestinians have been killed in the fighting between Israel and Hamas, three-quarters of them civilians, according to the United Nations. Israel says some 900 Palestinian militants were among the dead. Sixty-four Israeli soldiers and three civilians inside Israel were also killed.

UPDATE AUGUST 07,14-09:07AM
I STILL NEVER HEARD HAMAS SAY THEY WANT TO EXTEND THE CEASE-FIRE AFTER FRIDAY MORNING AT 8AM ISRAEL TIME-1AM CANADA TIME.HAMAS IS BENT ON THAT THEY WANT THE RAFAH AND GAZA BORDERS OPENED.AND THAT ALL KINDS OF CAPTURED HAMAS MURDERERS BE FREED.ISRAEL WANTS ABBAS AND THE PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY IN GAZA WITH HAMAS.SO ISRAEL CAN HAVE SOME CONTROL OF GAZA.AND SINCE THE UNITED NATIONS CLAIM ABBAS IS SUCH A PEACEFUL GUY.HE WANTS PEACE SO MUCH WITH ISRAEL.BUT STILL ABBAS ACCUSES ISRAEL OF WAR CRIMES IN THIS GAZA WAR AND WANTS THEM TAKEN TO THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT.IF THATS A PEACEFUL SO CALLED PEACE PARTNER.YOU GOTTA BE NUTS IN THE HEAD TO BELIEVE THAT.AND ISRAEL ALSO WANTS GAZA DEMILITARIZED WITH EUROPEAN UNION TROOPS I WOULD PUT IN GAZA.I REALLY AM SHOCKED THAT MURDERER TRIGGER HAPPY HAMAS-ARABS HAVE NOT SHOT IN ISRAEL AND BROKE THE CEASE-FIRE YET.WERE 56 HOURS INTO THE 72 HOUR CEASE-FIRE NOW.

Ron Prosor Hits Back at UN 'War Crimes' Accusation-After Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon accuses Israel of 'war crimes' in Gaza, Israeli ambassador to the UN calls out anti-Israel bias.By AFP and Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 8/6/2014, 7:04 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Israeli ambassador to the UN Ron Prosor sharply criticized the UN on Wednesday, after Secretary General Ban Ki Moon accused Israel of "war crimes" against Palestinian Arabs in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge. "If the UN assembly had invested a tenth of the energy invested in investigating Israel, it would reveal horrific war crimes on the part of Hamas," Prosor fired."The international community has lost its way," he continued. "This organization was founded to promote morality, truth and justice. Unfortunately, that is not its mission now."Earlier, Ban accused Israel of "war crimes" in Gaza. "The fighting has raised difficult questions of proportionality, attacks on civilians and whether Israel abided by international humanitarian law," Ban stated. He claimed that Israel knew of the presence of civilians in UN facilities, and that it did not justify hitting Hamas terrorists hiding within those buildings."A suspicion of armed activity does not justify the risk of hundreds of thousands of civilians," Ban said.Ban opened a special meeting of the United Nations General Assembly with an appeal for a lasting peace as a 72-hour ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was holding for a second day."The senseless cycle of suffering in Gaza and the West Bank [Palestinian Authority - ed.], as well as in Israel must end," he told the 193-nation assembly. After three wars in Gaza in six years, the UN secretary general warned that the world's patience with the Israelis and the Palestinians was being tested."Do we have to continue like this - build, destroy, and build and destroy?" Ban asked. "We will build again but this must be the last time - to rebuild. This must stop now."The UN General Assembly was convened at the request of Arab countries, who have criticized the Security Council for failing to adopt a strongly-worded resolution to press Israel and Hamas to stop.Jordan has circulated a draft resolution in the Security Council calling for a ceasefire, a lifting of all travel and import restrictions on Gaza, and an investigation of attacks on UN-run schools that were being used as headquarters by Hamas and Islamic Jihad. The document has yet to come up for a vote. The UN has been virulently anti-Israel throughout the conflict, helping spark waves of anti-Semitism worldwide as it contributed to the media's coverage of fighting in Gaza.UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay, who also launched the investigation into Israel by the UN and the Assembly meeting Wednesday, has accused Israel of violating international law by defending itself against Hamas rockets, and recently skewered Israel for not 'sharing' the Iron Dome missile defense system - which may also have offensive capabilities - with Hamas terrorists.

Report: Israel Accepts Ceasefire Extension - Hamas Rejects It-Israeli official tells international media that Egyptian truce has been extended; Hamas insists fighting to resume.By Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 8/6/2014, 9:34 PM / Last Update: 8/6/2014, 10:20 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Israel has conditionally agreed to extend a ceasefire that ended the month-long self-defense operation in Gaza, an Israeli official stated on condition of anonymity.Reuters reports Wednesday night that the official did not give details about the extension, only that it had been agreed upon."Israel has expressed its readiness to extend the truce under its current terms," the official merely stated, referring to the 72-hour "humanitarian ceasefire" brokered by Egypt overnight Monday/Tuesday. The ceasefire took effect at 8:00 am Tuesday and was accepted by both Israel and Hamas; it is due to expire Friday.Israel has yet to officially confirm its extension of the ceasefire agreement. In the meantime, Hamas has rejected the idea of an extension entirely. "Israel and Hamas will resume fighting immediately at the end of the 72-hour ceasefire, at 8:00 am Friday," a Hamas spokesperson stated Wednesday night.Earlier Wednesday, the IDF announced a limited pullout of the Gaza border area, leaving 55,000 soldiers near the fence and discharging some 30,000 reservists. IDF forces already officially left Gaza itself earlier this week.On Wednesday night, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu stressed in an international press conference that the IDF stands at the ready in the event the current ceasefire is violated, however."We closely monitor the implementation of the ceasefire on the ground, and we are holding position in the event it is violated," he stated. "The army is in the field, with reinforcements, to meet any scenario."Thirty days have passed since Operation Protective Edge was launched on July 8. Sixty-four IDF soldiers and three civilians were killed since the fighting began, and Hamas fired more than 3,500 rockets on Israel.

Several foreign journalists have claimed to have been harassed by Hamas during Operation Protective Edge, the Government Press Office (GPO) announced Wednesday."Upon the conclusion of the operation, the GPO accumulated testimony by foreign journalists regarding harassment by Hamas activists regarding the carrying out of their assignments," the GPO stated."Journalists said that during their coverage of the fighting they received threats and – in several cases – were the victims of violence that included destruction of their equipment because they had documented criminal activity by Hamas such as the launching of rockets from the heart of civilian areas."According to the GPO statement, 705 foreign journalists from over 42 countries have been covering the conflict since it began on July 8. It did not specify how many of those journalists filed the complaints.Rumors of Hamas suppressing foreign journalists from reporting on their use of human shields in Gaza - or on their inclusion of Hamas terrorists in the number of "civilian casualties" there - have persisted since the conflict broke. However, at least one journalist confirmed this harassment policy last week, after safely returning home from reporting on the clashes.Italian journalist Gabriele Barbati noted he was safe from "Hamas retaliation" after he returned home to Italy, tweeting that a misfired rocket - not Israel - was behind ten reported deaths in the Shati refugee camp.Other incidents of suppressed reporting have surfaced as well. Earlier in the fighting, Wall Street Journal reported Nick Casey tweeted evidence - and veiled criticism - over Hamas's leadership's use of Shifa Hospital in Gaza as a command center, shedding more light on the group's use of human shields.Hamas reacted furiously, and a Hamas-affiliated twitter account blacklisted him as a journalist "who lies for Israel" - a potentially deadly accusation for anyone in Gaza, let alone a foreigner. Shortly afterwards, Casey promptly removed the tweet.

Netanyahu: The Situation in Gaza is Better Now Than Before-In live press conference, Prime Minister notes that the operation has been successful - but the international community's reaction has not.By Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 8/6/2014, 7:45 PM / Last Update: 8/6/2014, 8:19 PM-ISRAEL NATIONALNEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu gave a press conference to foreign journalists on Wednesday, to provide an update on Operation Protective Edge after a 72-hour ceasefire. Netanyahu began by noting that Israel is ready if the ceasefire is violated, saying the situation has improved since the war and that more units have been employed along the Gaza border."We closely monitor the implementation of the ceasefire on the ground, and we are holding position in the event it is violated," he stated. "The army is in the field, with reinforcements, to meet any scenario.""In any case, around the Gaza vicinity communities we have stationed forces that were not there before the operation, in order to provide better protection for local residents," he added. "In recent years, Hamas dug a tunnel system in order to carry out attacks against Israeli citizens," the Prime Minister continued, adding that "we left the area only after making sure that the IDF destroyed the tunnel systems that we knew about.""Hamas also built a rocket system designed to harm Israeli citizens," he continued. "It is the Iron Dome, along with the iron discipline of the citizens of Israel, which prevented this [from succeeding]." Regarding the future, Netanyahu said that the IDF is working “to create technology means to locate new tunnels that will reach into our territory,” Netanyahu stated. The Prime Minister also thanked the IDF for its progress.“The IDF is an amazing army," he said. "It’s a strong army [which] had major achievements. It stood and stands by all the requirements.""The entire nation is behind the IDF, during peace and during war," he added. "I am proud of the IDF. I am proud to be the prime minister of such united a people.”

Operation Protective Edge was 'proportionate'

The Prime Minister also refuted smears against the IDF and Israel and the mission behind the operation, stating that the offensive was "proportionate.""I think it was justified. I think it was proportionate and that doesn't in any way take away the deep regret we have for the loss of a single civilian casualty," he said.Netanyahu emphasized that Hamas, not Israel, is responsible for civilian casualties."The person responsible for destruction and death in Gaza is Hamas," he stated.Netanyahu then showed footage of rocket attacks suppressed by Hamas terrorists, confirming several reports - including from the Government Press Office - that foreign journalists were abused by Hamas terrorists, as well as the UN's role in the conflict. "This is the UNRWA's elementary school for boys," he explains. "You see around that five mortars fired, four mortars fired . . .it's important to see that, to understand what our forces are facing in Gaza."He also showed terror tunnels and shafts next to mosques and schools."This is where terror tunnels are dug. In many places, they are dug from homes," he noted. "This is as example, again, of terror tunnels used to fire at, kidnap, and kill our civilians." Now that journalists have left Gaza, he said, "I expect to see even more documentation of Hamas terrorists hiding behind civilian population [. . .] I think the truth should come out."To that end, Netanyahu emphasized that Israel's goals - unlike what has been represented in foreign media - were to protect Israelis, not harm Palestinians."The goal of Operation Protective Edge was to protect Israeli civilians - to protect them from 3,500 rockets [. . .] and from terror tunnels and death squads," he stated. "Israel deeply regrets every civilian casualty, every single one [. . .] the people of Gaza are not our enemy, our enemy is Hamas, and other terrorist organizations.""The tragedy of Gaza is that it is ruled by Hamas," he added.

Skewed coverage of conflict a 'mistake'

Netanyahu warned that the international community's condemnation of Israel sets a dangerous precedent for the global war against Islamist terrorism."Nearly everyone says that they support Israel's right to defends itself, and we appreciate it," he said. "But there are those who say that Israel should not implement that right." "But this is a mistake - it would justify Hamas's use of civilians as human shields," he said, and make it harder for the Western world to fight terrorism.Netanyahu connects this strategy to Hezbollah, Boko Haram, and ISIS takeovers worldwide."The test is for the civilized world itself: how it is able to defend itself," he stated. In connection to this, Netanyahu noted Hamas's timing. More than just rejected six cease-fires, the final cease-fire - which was implemented Tuesday at 8:00 am - is the same that was offered, and rejected, very early on in the fighting."90% of the fatalities in this conflict could have been avoided if Hamas had not rejected then the ceasefire it accepts now," Netanyahu fired, calling for Hamas to "be ostracized" by the international community."It must be ostracised from the family of nations for its callous abuse of civilians," he stated."Every civilian casualty is a tragedy of Hamas's own making," he continued. "This is something for which it must be held accountable. For the sake of their own children, it must not be allowed to get away with this."

Gaza ceasefire holding on second day, talks under way-Reuters-By Nidal al-Mughrabi and Yasmine Saleh-AUG 6,14-YahooNews

GAZA/CAIRO (Reuters) - A Gaza ceasefire was holding on Wednesday as Egyptian mediators pursued talks with Israeli and Palestinian representatives on an enduring end to a war that has devastated the Islamist Hamas- dominated enclave.Egypt's intelligence chief met a Palestinian delegation in Cairo, the state news agency MENA said, a day after he conferred with Israeli representatives. The Palestinian team, led by an official from Western-backed President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah party, includes envoys from Hamas and the Islamic Jihad group."The indirect talks between the Palestinians and Israelis are moving forward," one Egyptian official said, making clear that the opposing sides were not meeting face to face. "It is still too early to talk about outcomes but we are optimistic."Israel's delegation to the talks arrived in Cairo later on Wednesday, sources at the airport in the Egyptian capital said.Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri told reporters his country was working hard for a deal and sought "solutions to protect the Palestinian people and their interests."But a senior official with Hamas's armed wing said the group may quit the Cairo talks if progress was not made toward meeting its main demands to lift a blockade on Gaza and free Palestinian prisoners."Unless the conditions of the resistance are met the negotiating team will withdraw from Cairo and then it will be up to the resistance in the field," a senior commander of Hamas's armed wing told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.Israel's military chief, Lieutenant-General Benny Gantz, said in televised remarks that should Hamas disrupt the calm "we will not hesitate to continue to use our force wherever necessary and with whatever force necessary to ensure the security of Israeli citizens near and far."Egyptian and Palestinian sources said they expected an initial response by Israel to the Palestinian demands, which it has so far shown no signs of accepting, later on Wednesday.Israel withdrew ground forces from the Gaza Strip on Tuesday morning and started a 72-hour Egyptian-brokered ceasefire with Hamas as a first step towards a long-term deal.It showed signs of expecting the truce to last by lifting official emergency restrictions on civilians living in the country's south, permitting more public activities and urging everyone to resume their routines.Streets in towns in southern Israel, which had been under daily rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, were filled again with playing children. The military said that a rocket-warning siren that sounded in the south in the afternoon was a false alarm. In Gaza, where some half-million people have been displaced by a month of bloodshed, some residents left U.N. shelters to trek back to neighbourhoods where whole blocks have been destroyed by Israeli shelling and the smell of decomposing bodies fills the air.

BLOCKADE

Palestinians want an end to the Israeli-Egyptian blockade on impoverished Gaza and the release of prisoners, including those Israel arrested in a June crackdown in the occupied West Bank after three Jewish seminary students were kidnapped and killed.Israel has resisted those demands."For Israel the most important issue is the issue of demilitarisation. We must prevent Hamas from rearming, we must demilitarise the Gaza Strip," Mark Regev, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told Reuters television.U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, in an interview on the BBC's HARDtalk programme, also spoke of a need for Hamas to decommission its rocket arsenal."What we want to do is support the Palestinians and their desire to improve their lives and to be able to open crossings and get food in and reconstruct and have greater freedom," Kerry said."But that has to come with a greater responsibility towards Israel, which means giving up rockets, moving into a different plane," he said.Kerry said, however, all this would "finally come together" as part of wider Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts that he has spearheaded but which have been frozen since April over Israel's opposition to a unity deal between Hamas and Abbas's Palestine Liberation Organization.Hamas, which rules Gaza, has ruled out giving up its weapons.

HUMANITARIAN AID

An Israeli official, who declined to be identified, said Israel wanted humanitarian aid to flow to the Palestinian enclave's 1.8 million inhabitants as soon as possible. But, the official said, the import of cement - vital for reconstruction - would depend on achieving guarantees that it would not be used by militants to construct more infiltration tunnels leading into Israel and other fortifications.Gaza officials say the war has killed 1,867 Palestinians, most of them civilians. Israel says 64 of its soldiers and three civilians have been killed since fighting began on July 8, after a surge in Palestinian rocket launches. An Israeli opinion poll, conducted after the ceasefire went into effect, said Israelis, while not regarding the Gaza war as a victory for their country's powerful military, remained highly supportive of Netanyahu.According to the poll in the Haaretz newspaper, 51 percent of those surveyed said neither side won, while 36 percent believe that Israel emerged victorious. Six percent said Hamas was the victor.Of the 442 people who took part in the poll, 77 percent described Netanyahu's performance during the war as excellent or good.Efforts to turn the ceasefire into a lasting truce could prove difficult, with the sides far apart on their central demands, and each rejecting the other's legitimacy. Hamas rejects Israel's existence and vows to destroy it, while Israel denounces Hamas as a terrorist group and eschews any ties.Egypt has positioned itself as a mediator in successive Gaza conflicts but, like Israel, its current administration views Hamas as a security threat.Besides the loss of life, the war has cost both sides economically. Gaza faces a massive $6-billion price tag to rebuild devastated infrastructure. Israel has lost hundreds of millions of dollars in tourism and other sectors and fears cuts in overall economic growth this year as well.Palestinian officials said a donor conference to raise funds for Gaza's reconstruction would be held in Oslo next month.(Additional reporting by Ali Sawafta in Ramallah, Ori Lewis in Jerusalem and Maggie Fick in Cairo; Writing by Jeffrey Heller in Jerusalem; Editing by Giles Elgood and Sonya Hepinstall)

Dutch firm Fugro to lead search for MH370 off Australia-Reuters-By Lincoln Feast-AUG 6,14-YahooNews

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Dutch engineering firm Fugro will lead the search of the Indian Ocean seafloor where missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is believed to have crashed, hoping to unlock the greatest mystery in modern aviation.Australia on Wednesday awarded Fugro the lead commercial contract for the search, after months of hunting by up to two dozen countries revealed no trace of the missing Boeing 777.The jetliner, carrying 239 passengers and crew, disappeared on March 8 shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing.Investigators say what little evidence they have to work with suggests the aeroplane was deliberately diverted thousands of kilometers before eventually crashing into the Indian Ocean off the coast of Western Australia. The next phase of the search is expected to start within a month and take up to a year, focusing on a 60,000 sq km (23,000 square miles) patch of ocean some 1,600 km (1,000 miles) west of Perth.Australian Transport Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said Fugro was selected after "offering the best value-for-money technical solution" for the seafloor search."I remain cautiously optimistic that we will locate the missing aircraft within the priority search area," he told reporters in Canberra.Fugro will use two vessels equipped with towed deep water vehicles carrying side scan sonar, multi beam echo sounders and video cameras to scour the seafloor, which is close to 5,000 m (16,400 ft) deep in places. The Dutch company is already conducting a detailed underwater mapping of the search area, along with a Chinese naval vessel."We haven't completed the mapping, so we are still discovering detailed features that we had no knowledge of, underwater volcanoes and various other things," said Martin Dolan, the head of the Australian Transport Safety Board, which is heading the search."We are finding some surprises as we go through."Malaysia will provide four vessels and gear to aid seafloor mapping and the search of the storm-lashed and isolated area.Truss said he would talk to his Malaysian counterpart later this month about sharing search costs. Australia has set aside up to A$90 million ($83.66 million) and estimates a 12-month search of the area will cost around A$52 million. The search is already the most expensive ever undertaken.China, which had 153 nationals on board MH370, has been heavily involved, providing ships, aircraft and satellite technology. One Chinese vessel will stay in the search area until mid-September, but Truss said China had shown no sign that it would cover any of the commercial search costs.Dozens of ships and planes scoured vast areas of ocean in the months after the plane disappeared but found only rubbish. The search was narrowed in April after a series of acoustic pings thought to be from the plane's black box recorders were heard near its last location shown by satellite data analysis. But officials now say wreckage from the aircraft was not in the area they had identified, requiring the search to be expanded and moved further to the southwest.Malaysia Airlines has been battered this year by the tragic unprecedented loss of two of its airliners, after Flight MH17 was shot down over a conflict zone in eastern Ukraine. With a long maritime history and seafaring expertise, Dutch companies are leaders in the field of complex, large-scale undersea search and salvage operations.(Additional reporting by Matt Siegel; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)

Bodies dumped in streets as West Africa struggles to curb Ebola-Reuters-By Clair MacDougall and Daniel Flynn-AUG 6,14-YahooNews

MONROVIA/DAKAR (Reuters) - Relatives of Ebola victims in Liberia defied government orders and dumped infected bodies in the streets as West African governments struggled to enforce tough measures to curb an outbreak of the virus that has killed 887 people. In Nigeria, which recorded its first death from Ebola in late July, authorities in Lagos said eight people who came in contact with the deceased U.S. citizen Patrick Sawyer were showing signs of the deadly disease. The outbreak was detected in March in the remote forest regions of Guinea, where the death toll is rising. In neighboring Sierra Leone and Liberia, where the outbreak is now spreading fastest, authorities deployed troops to quarantine the border areas where 70 percent of cases have been detected. Those three countries announced a raft of tough measures last week to contain the disease, shutting schools and imposing quarantines on victim's homes, amid fears the incurable virus would overrun healthcare systems in one of the world's poorest regions. In Liberia's ramshackle ocean-front capital Monrovia, still scarred by a 1989-2003 civil war, relatives of Ebola victims were dragging bodies onto the dirt streets rather than face quarantine, officials said.Information Minister Lewis Brown said some people may be alarmed by regulations imposing the decontamination of victims' homes and the tracking of their friends and relatives. With less than half of those infected surviving the disease, many Africans regard Ebola isolation wards as death traps."They are therefore removing the bodies from their homes and are putting them out in the street. They're exposing themselves to the risk of being contaminated," Brown told Reuters. "We're asking people to please leave the bodies in their homes and we'll pick them up."Brown said authorities had begun cremating bodies on Sunday, after local communities opposed burials in their neighborhoods, and had carried out 12 cremations on Monday. Meanwhile, in the border region of Lofa County, troops were deployed on Monday night to start isolating effected communities there."We hope it will not require excessive force, but we have to do whatever we can to restrict the movement of people out of affected areas," Brown said.Finance minister Amara Konneh said the country's growth forecast for the year was no longer looking realistic as a result of the outbreak. Sierra Leone's foreign minister Samura Kamara also said that the virus had cost the government $10 million so far and was hampering efforts to stimulate growth.British Airways said it was suspending flights to and from Liberia and Sierra Leone until the end of the month due to public health concerns.Germany joined France and the United States in advising against travel to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, saying there was still no end in sight to the spread of the disease.

MISSIONARY DUE BACK IN UNITED STATES

A second American aid worker stricken with Ebola in West Africa was wheeled on a stretcher in a white suit into an Atlanta hospital where doctors will try and save her and a fellow aid worker from the deadly virus. The two saw their conditions improve by varying degrees in Liberia after they received an experimental drug developed by San Diego-based private biotech firm Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc, said a representative for Samaritan's Purse, the charity they worked for.A New York hospital is also testing a man with symptoms of the deadly disease, though a senior medical officer there said it was probably not the virus. Saudi Arabia was also testing a man for suspected Ebola infection after he returned recently from a business trip to Sierra Leone.Concern grew over an outbreak in Lagos, Africa's largest city, after medical authorities there said they had quarantined 14 people who came into contact with Sawyer after he arrived on a regional flight from Liberia. The airline Asky has since been barred from Nigeria."Of the 14 who have had serious contact with the victim, eight have serious symptoms," Lagos Health Commissioner Jide Idris told a news conference. "Only one of those quarantined has tested positive ... The doctor who tested positive is now on the mainland under intensive care."With healthcare systems in the West African nations overrun by the epidemic, the African Development Bank and World Bank said they would immediately disburse $260 million to the three countries worst affected - Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. In Monrovia, however, some health clinics were deserted as workers and patients stayed home, afraid of catching the disease."The health workers think that they are not protected, they don't have the requisite material to use to protect themselves against the Ebola disease," said Amos Richards, a physician's assistant. The current outbreak of the highly contagious virus has so far killed around 55 percent of those known to have caught it, and experts expect the percentage to rise once more victims succumb and the data is tallied up.(Additional reporting by Daniel Flynn and Emma Farge in Dakar and Phillip Stewart in Washington; Editing by Will Waterman)

NATO fears Ukraine invasion as Russia masses troops; Moscow restricts Western imports-Reuters-By Dmitry Zhdannikov and Maria Tsvetkova-AUG 6,14-YahooNews

MOSCOW/DONETSK Ukraine (Reuters) - Russia has massed around 20,000 combat-ready troops on Ukraine's border and could use the pretext of a humanitarian mission to invade, NATO said on Wednesday, its starkest warning yet that Moscow could soon mount a ground assault against its neighbor.President Vladimir Putin announced Moscow's biggest economic response to Western sanctions, launching a tit-for-tat trade war by ordering his government to restrict imports of food from countries that have imposed sanctions on Russia. With fighting escalating and rebels losing ground in the weeks since a Malaysian airliner was shot down over separatist-held territory, Russia has announced military exercises this week in the border region."We're not going to guess what's on Russia's mind, but we can see what Russia is doing on the ground – and that is of great concern. Russia has amassed around 20,000 combat-ready troops on Ukraine’s eastern border," NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said in an emailed statement.Moscow could use "the pretext of a humanitarian or peace-keeping mission as an excuse to send troops into Eastern Ukraine", she said. A NATO military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Russia's build-up at the border included tanks, infantry, artillery, air defense systems, logistics troops, special forces, and various aircraft.A Russian defense ministry spokesman dismissed the NATO accusations: "We've been hearing this for three months already."Moscow annexed Ukraine's Crimea peninsula in the Black Sea in March, and Western countries say it has funded and armed pro-Russian rebels who rose up in the east of Ukraine in April.Over the past two months, government troops have gained ground against the rebels, who are led almost exclusively by Russian citizens and have managed to acquire tanks, missiles and other heavy weaponry that Kiev and its Western allies say can only have come from across the frontier.Kiev said 18 Ukrainian servicemen had been killed and 54 injured in 25 separate clashes over the past day in eastern Ukraine. Military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said troops had been shelled from inside Russian territory and frontier guards had come under a four-hour mortar and artillery attack.Fighting has intensified since Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed on July 17, killing all 298 people on board. Western countries say it was shot down by rebels with an advanced anti-aircraft missile supplied by Russia. Moscow denies blame, and the Russians who command the rebels deny they had such missiles. The United States and the European Union imposed sanctions on Russia that were mild at first but have been tightened sharply since the airliner was brought down.On Wednesday, Putin ordered his government to come up with a list of agricultural products from countries that imposed sanctions on Russia which would be banned in retaliation.Moscow has already banned Polish fruit and vegetables, Romanian beef and a handful of other products using food safety as a justification. But Putin's order strips off that figleaf, making clear the measures are a political response to sanctions.Finland's prime minister warned of dire economic consequences for his country, even a possible repeat of the financial crisis of six years ago.Russia imported $43 billion worth of food last year. It is the biggest buyer of European fruit and vegetables and a major global buyer of meat, fish and poultry. Nevertheless, the impact of Putin's new measures may be limited: with the rouble falling and inflation rising, he instructed his government to protect consumers when drawing up its ban list. That means popular items such as U.S. chicken quarters - a staple of the Russian diet since the early 1990s when they earned the nickname "Bush's legs" after the then American president - may be spared, at least for now.SIEGE Kiev's military offensive has pushed the rebels out of many of their strongholds, leaving them largely besieged in the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk, which the rebels have proclaimed capitals of two "people's republics".Residents in Donetsk, east Ukraine's main industrial hub and now the principal rebel redoubt, said Ukrainian warplanes had carried out air strikes overnight.Reuters journalists heard the planes roar overhead and massive explosions during the night. In the morning, an industrial district 2-3 km (1-2 miles) from the city center was pocked with craters, including two huge holes 7 meters (7 yards) wide and 2 meters deep, ripped into the asphalt."The planes were flying low. Then there were two massive explosions and the glass was blown out of the window. It was terrifying. This is war. There will never be peace," said Nadezhda, a woman who lived nearby.Government military spokesman Lysenko denied Ukrainian planes had carried out air strikes: "The Ukrainian military does not bomb the towns of Donetsk and Luhansk or any other similar populated places," he said. Many residents have fled the two cities, but hundreds of thousands of people are still living in them, increasingly fearful that they will bear the brunt of a full-blown assault. The latest Russian troop build-up on the border is not the first time Moscow has concentrated forces there: NATO estimated Russia had as many as 40,000 troops in place earlier in the crisis before Putin pulled them back in June. But the government's advance since then may be prompting new action from the Kremlin, after months in which state-controlled Russian media have mounted a sustained campaign of anti-Ukrainian agitation and nationalist pride focused on Crimea.Since March, Putin has vowed to use military force to protect Russian-speaking "compatriots" across the former Soviet Union. He branded southern and eastern Ukraine "New Russia", a name the rebels took up as catch-all for most militia groups. Most people in eastern and southern Ukraine are ethnic Ukrainians who speak Russian as their native language.Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Wednesday the threat of a direct intervention by Russia's military in Ukraine has risen over the last couple of days.A senior U.S. official said Washington was keeping a "very close eye" on Russian activity at the border.“The last few weeks have not been good ones for the Russians. They have seen the separatists lose ground and the Malaysian airliner shoot-down was a public relations disaster for the Russians. Unfortunately we have not seen a sense that the Russians are acting on the negative feedback and looking to deescalate. In fact we’ve see signs that Putin seems to be doubling down,” said the official.“There’s the buildup on the border, no change in the propaganda machine in Russia, talk of the need for humanitarian peacekeeping in Ukraine itself."(Additional reporting by Natalia Zinets and Richard Balmforth in Kiev, Lina Kushch in Donetsk, Barbara Lewis and Tom Koerkemeier in Brussels, Maria Kiselyova and Polina Dewitt in Moscow, Matt Spetalnick and Mark Hosenball in Washington and Adrian Croft in London; Writing by Peter Graff; editing by David Stamp)

U.S. to spend up to $550 million on African rapid response forces-Reuters-By By Phil Stewart-AUG 6 ,14-YahooNews

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States will announce on Wednesday plans to spend $110 million a year over the next three to five years to help African nations develop peacekeeping forces that can be rapidly deployed to head off militant threats and other crises, an Obama administration official told Reuters.President Barack Obama is expected to unveil the program during the third day of a summit of African heads of state in Washington, along with another U.S. plan to spend an initial $65 million to bolster security institutions in Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Tunisia, the official said. The United States would partner with Senegal, Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda to develop rapid response forces. Those forces would be ready to deploy as part of United Nations' or African Union missions, the official said."We've seen over time increasingly capable African peacekeepers who are deploying to address crises across the continent," the official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity."But there continues to be a gap in systematically supporting these peacekeepers to help them deploy more quickly and to help them better sustain themselves once deployed."From Somalia to the Sahel, the United States has been increasingly backing African-led military efforts to counter Islamist militants, while avoiding direct involvement in those conflicts.
It says it has trained more than a quarter-million African troops and police for service in U.N. and African Union peacekeeping operations. Recently, it sent a specialist team to help Nigeria search for the more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Islamist group Boko Haram. The new funds would start bolstering U.S. military efforts in Africa during the next fiscal year, which starts in October. Unlike previous funds, these would be geared directly to ensuring a rapid response to emerging crises by building capacity in African nations."We'll have increased training, particularly to train the trainer and to train specialized enabler units," the official said.Another program Obama unveiled, dubbed the Security Governance Initiative, would aim to strengthen institutions in African nations to address a range of issues, which could include border security, the official said.U.S. officials were hopeful that an intelligence-sharing initiative might also emerge from the discussions at the summit, but details were still unclear.(Reporting by Phil Stewart; Editing by Sandra Maler)

“The text is now being seen by EU member states and the Canadian provinces and territories and it will be formally concluded in September,” a European commission spokesperson told reporters in Brussels. An initial political agreement last October with Ottawa led to months of wrangling over issues like dairy agricultural quotas, financial services, maritime transport, and investors' ability to sue governments in special arbitration proceedings outside national court systems.Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper at the time announced the partial agreement in Brussels alongside EU commission president Jose Manuel Barroso. The deal, talks on which started in May 2009, still needs the final approval of 28 member states in order to be ratified. The Financial Times earlier this week reported Germany had opposed the investor protection clauses in the agreement over fears its standards on environment and consumer protection would be weakened. But an unnamed Canadian official told the Wall Street Journal that Germany's concerns over the so-called "investor-state dispute settlement" had been settled months ago.Last year, Romania also threatened to block the deal unless Ottawa lifted visa requirements for Romanian citizens.Once enacted, bilateral trade between Canada and EU is expected to increase by some 20 percent while 98 percent of existing tariff lines are to be cut. Most industrial, agricultural and fisheries duties would be eliminated.Canada’s trade ministry in a statement said it would create almost 80,000 jobs in the country and increase its annual income by around €8.2 billion. The European Commission, for its part, estimates an annual GDP increase in the EU of €11.6 billion within seven years following the implementation of the agreement.Details of the pact will not be made public until the September summit.Canada’s provinces and territories have already received the complete text and have been briefed on its content as well as on next steps, notes Canada's trade ministry. The 1,500 page document still needs to be translated into 23 different EU languages and then poured over by lawyers before final ratification, possibly in 2016.The EU-Canada pact is widely viewed as a blue-print for a much larger free trade agreement, still under negotiation, with the US.

EU election turnout at record low after all-Today @ 12:21-AUG 6,14-EUOBSERVER-By Honor Mahony

BRUSSELS - The turnout for the European election in May fell to a record low, dealing a blow to claims by politicians - based on initial results - that a three-decade downward trend in voter participation had finally been halted. The definitive turnout for the elections is 42.5 percent, down from 43 percent at the 2009 EU elections and down from the estimated 43.09 percent announced on 25 May, shortly after polls closed. The supposed upward spike, although small, was seized upon by several politicians as a highly symbolic break with the past where the percentage of those going to the polls continued to decrease as the parliament's legislative powers increased.“The first good news of the night is that we have finally broken the downward trend of falling participation in European elections,” liberal leader Guy Verhofstadt said on 25 May in Brussels.“The European Parliament will be more representative than the previous one as average turnout across Europe is an improvement on 2009.”Parliament spokesperson Jaume Duch at the time said the result, in view of the trend, was "historic".The parliament quietly put the revised statistic on the EP website on 25 July, two months after the elections.A spokesperson said the change was due to differences in estimated and final results in Spain and Italy. It took so long to get the final figure as counting methodology for invalid and blank votes had to be verified across all member states. However, the parliament remained upbeat despite the revision."When you look at the final result and the figure that was estimated at the end of May - those two figures are very close. The final figure, which is a little bit lower than in 2009, confirms that the big descending tendency of previous years has been stopped," the spokesperson told this website.Turnout has always been a sensitive issue for the assembly as it regularly positions itself as the most democratic of the EU institutions. The election to the 751-seat parliament is seen as suffering from 'second order' syndrome where voters perceive the outcome as having little direct impact on their lives. This has become an increasing embarrassment for the parliament which helps determine the shape of laws that affect almost every facet of citizens' lives from economic scrutiny of national budgets, to anti-pollution rules and consumer safety laws.Additionally some had hoped that having EU commission-president candidates engage in TV debates and touring member states - a novelty for this year's vote - would help increase the numbers of those going to the polls. While voter turnout did rise in some key countries - Germany (48.1%, up from 43.27% in 2009) and France (42.43%, up from 40.63% in 2009) - it fell in the majority, with Slovakia tailing at 13.05 percent.

Russia in sanction threat against EU-Today @ 09:30-AUG 6,14-EUOBSERVER-By Nikolaj Nielsen

BRUSSELS - Russia may restrict or impose a ban on Asian-bound European airlines from flying over its Siberian territory as part of a retaliatory move against western-imposed sanctions. On Tuesday (5 August), President Vladimir Putin asked his government to draw up counter measures to EU/US sanctions.Putin was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying any retaliatory measures “should be done very carefully to support domestic producers but not hurt consumers”.He described the western sanctions as “policy instruments aimed at putting pressure on the economy are contrary to all rules and regulations,” reports the Financial Times. The EU imposed tougher economic sanctions on Russia following the shooting down of a passenger plane over separatist-held territory in eastern Ukraine last month. The effect of these sanctions is already being felt by Russian tourist agencies, many of which have gone bust, due in part to fluctuating exchange rates. Up to 15,000 Russian tourists are reportedly stranded abroad, with many in Greece, Turkey, and Tunisia, reports the Wall Street Journal. But the trans-Siberian ban idea was floated after EU sanctions grounded low-cost carrier Dobrolyot, operated by Aeroflot, because it flies to Russia’s annexed Crimea. The sanctions cancelled the carrier’s leasing agreements, technical maintenance, insurance, and aero-navigation contracts. The budget airline operates two Boeings 737-800 NG and one Sukhoi Superjet-100.Prime minister Dmitry Medvedev met the Russian transport minister and a deputy chief executive of Aeroflot on Tuesday (5 August) to discuss the possible fall-out from western sanctions on Russian airlines.Vedomosti, a business daily in Russia, reported talks were underway to restrict or ban European airlines en route to Asia from flying through Russian airspace. The restrictions or ban would require the airlines to divert their flight paths via the much longer Gulf or polar routes, substantially increasing travel time and fuel costs.
Russia’s air transport agency says the Siberia routes cut travel distance by 4,000 km and fuel and fee costs by €22,000. Lufthansa operates about 180 flights a week through Siberian airspace.According to experts cited by Reuters, the ban would increase European airline operational costs from 25 to 50 percent or up to €150 million per year. But it would also mean Aeroflot would lose out on a special overflight fee imposed on European airlines, which fly through Russian airspace. The paper says Aeroflot stands to lose some €225 million a year in overflight fees if the Russian government follows through with the proposal. The reported announcement saw Aeroflot shares tumble on Tuesday.Meanwhile, Putin is calling for “an international humanitarian mission” in eastern Ukraine, seen by Kiev as an excuse to send in Russian troops as peacekeepers.Around 1,500 Russian troops are stationed in the separatist Moldovan region of Transnistria. Moldova’s pro-EU government on Tuesday told Russia to withdraw its soldiers and weapons.

Lebanese army surrounds border town, evacuates refugees-Reuters-By Samia Nakhoul-AUG 6,14-YahooNews

ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF ARSAL Lebanon (Reuters) - Lebanon's army surrounded a border town occupied by Islamist militants on Wednesday as mediators reported progress in negotiations to end to the most serious spillover of Syria's civil war yet onto Lebanese soil.Soldiers arrested men and evacuated refugees from the hill town of Arsal on the border with Syria. One Syrian refugee said she had seen fighters' bodies lying in the streets."We saw death with our own eyes," said Mariam Seifeddin, a 35-year-old mother of nine, who said she had sheltered with about 50 others in a single room without food or water for three days amid intense fighting.Saudi Arabian King Abdullah granted $1 billion to help the Lebanese army bolster security as they battle militants in Arsal on the Syrian frontier.Sunni Muslim clerics trying to mediate an end to the fighting said a ceasefire frequently violated since it was agreed on Tuesday was extended for a second day. Fighting flared just one hour into the extension: the army fired artillery when soldiers came under fire, security sources said.Political sources said the army was not planning immediately to retake Arsal but to evacuate civilians. A security official and a doctor in Arsal said many militants had fled into the surrounding mountains following the army bombardment.Arsal is the first major incursion into Lebanon by hardline Sunni militants - leading players in Sunni-Shi'ite violence unfolding across the Levant - which threatens the stability of Lebanon by inflaming its own sectarian tensions. While Lebanon has officially tried to distance itself from Syria's conflict, the country's powerful Shi'ite movement, Hezbollah, has sent fighters to aid President Bashar al-Assad.Dozens of armoured-personnel carriers and tanks were seen on the road heading towards the area. Lebanese special forces were also being deployed on Wednesday, arriving at the nearby town of al-Labwa, where hundreds of soldiers are stationed.Around 30 prisoners with their hands tied behind their backs were driven out of the town on an army truck. Most were young men, many were wearing red kaffiyeh headscarves.Members of the Muslim Clerics Association said three captive soldiers had been released, militants had started to withdraw and the ceasefire had been extended for 24 hours."They pledged to withdraw from Arsal and the news we received is that they started pulling out," Sheikh Houssam al-Ghali told a news conference. The clerics said they would start negotiating the release of 27 members of the security forces still being held in the town - 10 soldiers and 17 policemen. That is some 10 fewer than the number cited by officials.

CIVILIANS SUFFERING

At least 17 soldiers have been killed in the violence. Reports from inside the town suggest dozens of civilians and militants have been killed. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors violence in Syria's war, said it had confirmed that at least 41 people had been killed in Arsal, including at least 14 civilians. The militants have been identified by officials as members of the Nusra Front, al Qaeda's branch in Syria, and of the Islamic State, which has seized large areas of Iraq and Syria.Rebel sources told Reuters several members of the Islamic State had been killed in the fighting, including senior leader Abu Hassan al-Homsi.Local officials in Arsal said it was completely surrounded by the army apart from a corridor apparently left for gunmen who want to retreat. The town was the first stop for many civilians fleeing the bloodshed in Syria. Refugee camps in Arsal that provide shelter to tens of thousands of Syrians who fled the war have been badly damaged in the fighting, forcing refugees to seek shelter in the town itself, Syrian activists in the area have said.Qassem al-Zein, a Syrian doctor at the field hospital in Arsal said militants "wanted to leave since yesterday but they haven't been able to because of the shelling.""The important thing is to stop the shelling. The wounded and dead are still coming. Since this morning we've had 30 wounded, all from shelling and snipers. All civilians," he said.He said the hospital had counted 36 dead civilians since the fighting began. The army has been using artillery to shell Arsal, which is densely populated by tented settlements. On Wednesday, the army was taking women and children out of the Arsal area. A convoy stopped near Labwa to feed them, carrying water, bread and cheese. Barefoot and dirt-stained children, clearly hungry, devoured the food."Since the fighting started, we haven't eaten, drunk or slept. The fighters were firing all the time. We were stuck in one room, then the army came and evacuated us today," said Seifeddin, the 35-year-old mother of nine.Men had been taken away for interrogation by the army, but insisted they were farmers, not fighters, she said. Some teenage men said the army had questioned them and let them go."Shells and bullets were raining all around us, we've been under siege for three days," said Sabah Omar, a 40-year-old Syrian woman with three children who said she had been displaced three times before. The clashes in Arsal began on Saturday after security forces arrested an Islamist commander popular with local rebels who often move across the porous border with Syria.

SHI'ITE FIGHTERS

The Islamists freed three policemen on Tuesday in what one militant called a "goodwill gesture" in response to the clerics' mediation. The gunmen told the clerics they were willing to withdraw if the army agreed to man checkpoints only outside Arsal and not enter the town itself.A political source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the army aimed to retake the hills around Arsal.Lebanon - a country of about 4 million bordering Israel - has avoided the kind of war afflicting Syria and Iraq, but regional conflicts have rekindled decades-old tensions.Rocket fire, suicide attacks and gun battles connected to Syria's war have plagued Lebanon and the conflict has worsened Lebanon's perennial political deadlock, with officials divided largely along sectarian lines.More than 170,000 people have been killed in Syria's war, which started in 2011 as a peaceful protest movement, then degenerated into civil war after a government crackdown.Syria's President Bashar al-Assad, like Hezbollah, is backed by Shi'ite power Iran, Saudi Arabia's rival in the Gulf.In the Shi'ite town of al-Labwa downhill from Arsal, men wearing black shirts and khaki trousers with walkie talkies and pistols tucked into their belts were on the streets. One Hezbollah member who refused to give his name said many of the Sunni militants in Arsal were foreigners."They will kill anybody who is not like them. Even Sunnis who are not like them, they will chop off their heads," he said.(Additional reporting by Tom Perry and Alexander Dziadosz in Beirut and Amena Bakr in Doha; Writing by Oliver Holmes; Editing by Janet McBride, Paul Taylor and Peter Graff)

Green Party president quits after facing backlash over pro-Israel blog post-Katrina Clarke | August 5, 2014 | Last Updated: Aug 6 8:45 AM ET-National Post

One week after the Green Party of Canada president wrote a blog expressing support for Israel, which he signed and then posted on the party’s website, Paul Estrin is stepping down. The post led to confusion among party supporters and prompted party leader Elizabeth May to distance herself from Mr. Estrin. It was subsequently removed from the party’s website. In the post, titled “Why Gaza makes me sad,” Mr. Estrin wrote Israel is threatened now more than ever. He called the Hamas government hateful and said it harbours a “desire to obliterate.”Elizabeth May distances herself as Green Party president faces backlash for strongly worded blog post on Gaza.Gaza is giving children grenades … and asking their citizens to be sheep to the slaughter,” he wrote. In a statement Tuesday, Mr. Estrin announced his resignation, effective immediately.“I never intended to create confusion or have any of my actions negatively impact the party,” Mr. Estrin’s statement read.Julian Morelli, director of communications for the party, said Mr. Estrin made his decision based on the confusion his post caused. Some supporters threatened to quit the party, while others applauded Mr. Estrin’s views.“It was nothing to do with his opinion or beliefs. It has to do with his role as the party president,” said Mr. Morelli. “There’s separation … between the political and the actual organization. He doesn’t have a role in policy.”Mr. Morelli said the party has an obligation to make sure its position on Israel is clear.Last week, party leader Ms. May that while she and the Greens condemn Hamas for firing rockets into Israel, they do not adopt an unquestioning attitude toward the Jewish state.Mr. Morelli stressed that Mr. Estrin made the decision of his own accord.“Elizabeth May didn’t order anything, nor can she as leader,” he said.National Post, with a file from Postmedia News

Green Canadian backs blue & white-Canada’s Green Party president Paul Estrin gets attention for blogging criticism of Gaza and praise for Israel-By Renee Ghert-Zand July 30, 2014, 10:26 am-The Times of Israel
A pro-Israel blog post written last week by Paul Estrin, president of the Green Party of Canada, has caught the attention of Canadians and others as it has been widely shared on social media. The essay, published on the Green Party of Canada’s website, is titled, “Why Gaza Makes Me Sad.” In a departure from the party’s widely perceived leftist and pro-Palestinian stance, Estrin’s words are supportive of Israel and critical of Palestinians and their leadership. In his blog post, Estrin places the blame for the current escalation between Israel and Gaza squarely on Hamas. He also emphasizes that the Gazans themselves allowed Hamas to take control.“Since August 2005, Gazans have been in control of their own destiny. Some might say otherwise, yet Gazans have their own government and they are their own people: If their neighbors, Egypt and Israel, close their borders to Gaza, one must look to a Gaza run by a terrorist organization cum government that teaches and propagates hate, death and destruction to understand why,” he writes.“The Gazan government has had ample opportunity over these past years, nearly a decade, to alter its ways, change its mantra of death to the Jews, and become respectable caretakers of the people in their charge. They have not,” he continues.Estrin, who chairs the party’s board of directors and administration, usually leaves the public pronouncements on positions and policies to Elizabeth May, a Member of Parliament, and the Green Party of Canada’s political leader.Estrin’s blog post has angered some of his Green Party of Canada members, and on Monday, May distanced herself from Estrin’s expressed views, emphasizing that he does not speak for the party.“His views are contrary to Green Party of Canada position. We support peace. We condemn violence,” she wrote on Twitter. The party’s official platform states that it supports a two-state solution and believes that Canada should not take sides in the longstanding, complicated Israeli-Palestinian conflict.“ Canada’s role in the Middle East should be to reduce tensions, find working solutions and uphold international humanitarian law, not to take sides in this chronic conflict. We must work towards a mutually acceptable compromise that will achieve a lasting peace between, and among, the Israelis and Palestinians,” the platform states.A press release issued by the party at its national convention earlier this month called on Israeli and Palestinian leaders to “put an immediate end to the escalating violence in the Gaza Strip and Israel.”The idea of not taking sides against Hamas did not sit well with Estrin as Israel entered its fourth week of fighting the terrorist organization in Operation Protective Edge.

‘People need a rounder understanding of the situation’

“At this point, I thought it would behoove me to speak up to members of our party and to the Canadian public. People need a rounder understanding of the situation,” Estrin tells The Times of Israel. He is concerned about what he sees as a prevailing anti-Israel focus among his party’s 12,000 official members and Canadians in general. He has noticed a lack of knowledge about the conflict and its history on the part of those who are quick to defend the Palestinians and point fingers at the Israelis.“The Green Party internationally has six core principals, one of which is non-violence. When we consider the violence going on, we need to look at Hamas and not just Israel,” he says.Estrin, who is 35 and lives in Quebec City, feels qualified to speak up as a Jewish person with a long-term, keen personal and academic interests in the conflict. He has been to Israel twice to volunteer on a kibbutz, learn Hebrew, and study at a yeshiva.“I’m not coming out of nowhere,” he says.‘The Gazan government has been emboldened to continue on its terrorist course’In the blog, Estrin challenges the support given by citizens of countries around the world to the Palestinian leadership in Gaza, whom he claims is indifferent to the injury and death of their own civilian population.“And yet, these are the same people who are embraced and loved by the international community, with marches on Parliament Hill in Canada’s capital, and in cities throughout the world, holding banners and chanting about the destruction of the State of Israel and of death to the Jews,” Estrin writes.Calling the “noble” actions of international activists “grossly misplaced,” Estrin fears that the Gazan government has been emboldened to continue on its terrorist course, and that Israel could consequently (and justifiably) be forced to take more extreme measures against it.Estrin admits that, although he disagrees with many policies of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government, he is pleased that it supports Israel’s right to defend itself. He is also quick to point out that the Green Party of Canada is not as leftist and pro-Palestinian as the Green Party in other countries.“We are centrists with most of our policies. It’s true that some of our policies scream ‘leftist,’ but others do not,” he says.Estrin, who has held out hope for peace ever since the Oslo Accords were signed by Israel and the PLO two decades ago, is pleased that people who would usually never read a blog post from the Green Party are taking the time to consider what he has written.“People can still march for Gaza, but they should do it for the Palestinian civilians there, and not for Hamas,” he says.
