The center of the major industrial city is all but deserted, with few people or cars on the streets and most stores and restaurants closed.A spokesman for the Ukrainian military operation, Alexei Dmitrashkovsky, told The Associated Press that government soldiers were fighting Sunday to hold positions they had taken on the edge of Donetsk, but were meeting resistance.In the part of the city closest to the fighting, an artillery shell hit a school overnight, but no one was reported hurt."The shell went through the roof and exploded inside the building, setting off a fire, but we still don't know who fired it," said Dmitry Levonchik, a 45-year-old coal miner. "Who needs this war? Mysterious Sinkholes May Be Threatening The World's Sixth-Tallest Building-Business Insider-By Matt Johnston-AUG 3,14-YahooNews

The sixth-tallest building in the world is being built in Seoul, South Korea, but a strange geological phenomenon is threatening the site, leaving the construction team baffled as it gets closer to finishing it.The AP reports that a bunch of strange, small sinkholes are popping up out of nowhere in neighborhoods nearby.The Korea Times tweeted a picture of one of the sinkholes back on July 21:

These strange earthly issues are causing safety concerns, threatening the construction. The AP says that 70 of 123 floors have been built, but now locals living in residential neighborhoods nearby have started seeing sinkholes on their roads and became very worried.So far, at least one official at the skyscraper's construction company, Lotte Moolsan, is claiming that the sinkholes are too far away to be caused by the construction, according to the AP. Sinkholes are often caused by groundwater and erosion. The USGS describes them as " an area of ground that has no natural external surface drainage — when it rains, all of the water stays inside the sinkhole and typically drains into the subsurface. Sinkholes can vary from a few feet to hundreds of acres and from less than 1 to more than 100 feet deep."On top of that, a lake that the tower overlooks seems to be getting smaller, and nobody knows why that's happening either.  Lotte Moolsan says they're pumping water into the lake to keep the levels up. It's dropped from about 16 feet to 14 feet.When it's completed, the tower is set to be just a little taller than One World Trade Center in Manhattan.

TOLEDO Ohio (Reuters) - Health authorities tested water for toxins in Toledo, Ohio, on Sunday as some 400,000 people remained without safe drinking water for a second day following the discovery of high toxin levels from algae on Lake Erie.Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins said some sampling showed decreased toxin levels but results from further tests would not be known until later in the day. The city is waiting on water samples being analyzed at Environmental Protection Agency labs in Cincinnati."All I can tell you is that everything is trending in a very positive direction," Collins told reporters, but he added that he could not predict when water would be safe to drink.About 500,000 people get water from the contaminated source but about 100,000 residents of some communities have backup water supply systems, said city of Toledo spokeswoman Lisa Ward.Toledo Public Utilities Director Edward Moore said a plan is in place to swiftly flush the system of contaminated water once the water supply is deemed safe. Many residents drove to other states in search of fresh water as stores rapidly sold out of bottled water.Jeff Hauter of Toledo drove to a Walmart in suburban Detroit where he bought 18 gallons and four cases of water. He said he ran into others from the Toledo area loading up their vehicles.Algal blooms in Lake Erie are fairly common, typically in the summer, state emergency operations spokesman Chris Abbruzzese said. Potentially dangerous algal blooms, or rapid increases in algae levels, are caused by high amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous.Those nutrients can come from runoff of excessively fertilized fields and lawns or from malfunctioning septic systems or livestock pens, city officials said.Drinking the contaminated water can affect the liver and cause diarrhea, nausea, numbness or dizziness, officials said. Boiling will not destroy the toxins.The water should not be used for drinking, making infant formula or ice, brushing teeth or preparing food, the governor's office said. U.S. doctor stricken with Ebola said to be improving-Reuters-By Rich McKay-AUG 3,14-YahooNews

ATLANTA (Reuters) - An American doctor stricken with the deadly Ebola virus while in Liberia and brought to the United States for treatment in a special isolation ward is improving, the top U.S. health official said on Sunday.Dr Kent Brantly was able to walk, with help, from an ambulance after he was flown on Saturday to Atlanta, where he is being treated by infectious disease specialists at Emory University Hospital."It's encouraging that he seems to be improving - that's really important - and we're hoping he'll continue to improve," said Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta.Frieden told CBS's "Face the Nation" it was too soon to predict whether Brantly would survive, and a hospital spokesman said Emory did not expect to provide any updates on the doctor's condition on Sunday.Brantly is a 33-year-old father of two young children who works for the North Carolina-based Christian organization, Samaritan's Purse. He was in Liberia responding to the worst Ebola outbreak on record when he contracted the disease.Since February, more than 700 people in West Africa have died from Ebola, a hemorrhagic virus with a death rate of up to 90 percent of those infected. Writebol, a 59-year-old mother of two who worked to decontaminate those entering and leaving an Ebola isolation unit in Liberia, was due to depart for the United States overnight on Monday, Liberia's information minister said.Writebol's husband, David, who had been living and working in Liberia with his wife, was expected to travel home separately in the next few days, their missionary organization, SIM USA, said in a statement.Despite public concern over bringing in Ebola patients, the CDC's Frieden said the United States may see a few isolated cases in people who have been traveling, but did not expect widespread Ebola in the country.The facility at Emory chosen to treat the two infected Americans was set up with CDC and is one of four in the country with the ability to handle such cases. The Americans will be treated primarily by four infectious disease physicians, and will be able to see relatives through a plate-glass window and speak to them by phone or intercom.Frieden said it was unlikely Brantly's wife and children, who left Liberia before he began showing symptoms, contracted the disease because people who are exposed to Ebola but not yet sick cannot infect others.The CDC has said it is not aware of any Ebola patient having been treated in the United States previously. BEIJING (AP) — A strong earthquake in southern China's Yunnan province toppled thousands of homes on Sunday, killing at least 367 people and injuring more than 1,800.About 12,000 homes collapsed in Ludian, a densely populated county located around 366 kilometers (277 miles) northeast of Yunnan's capital, Kunming, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported.The magnitude-6.1 quake struck at 4:30 p.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Its epicenter was in Longtoushan township, 23 kilometers (14 miles) southwest of the city of Zhaotong, the Ludian county seat.Ma Liya, a resident of Zhaotong, told Xinhua that the streets there were like a "battlefield after bombardment." The following facts have long been unacceptable to many Arabs: that the land of Israel is the Jewish people’s ancestral homeland; it is where we had a Jewish kingdom for centuries; there is now a Jewish state within Israel, with Jerusalem as its capital.Even after signing peace accords with Egypt and Jordan, Israel continues to face a combination of threats. To the east, Iran is advancing its nuclear project to produce nuclear weapons, and its president pledges continuously that Israel will be wiped out from the earth.To the north, the Lebanese terrorist organization Hezbollah, which also promises to destroy Israel – and functions as an Iranian proxy – has re-armed since its war with Israel in 2006.To the south, Israel faces the terrorist Hamas movement, which controls the Gaza Strip. Its stated goal is the elimination of the Jewish state and the establishment of an Islamic nation enveloping all of Israel – what they call Palestine.Since 1947 when the United Nations agreed upon the creation of a Jewish and a Arab state, the Palestinians have been offered a nation state in a divided land. And they have turned the offer down, for it has always been more important to expel the Jews than to have a Palestinian state.

Hamas in the south – as well as Hezbollah in the north – deliberately locates its missile launchers, weapons factories, rockets and militants, in schools, mosques and densely populated areas. Hamas launches rockets from neighborhoods, schools, markets and mosques.

Its strategy of attacking Israeli civilians while using Palestinian civilians as human shields is responsible for the suffering in Gaza. A well-known cartoon describes an Israeli soldier and a Palestinian terrorist shooting at each other. The Israeli soldier is standing in front of a baby carriage protecting the baby.  The terrorist is firing from behind a baby carriage, using the baby as a shield.The residents of Israeli towns have only several seconds from rocket launch time to run into a shelter. Imagine spending every day over several years waiting for a loud siren signaling that you have 15 seconds to find shelter. What would we do? How would we go to work? How would we send our children to school? Imagine what America’s reaction would be if Cuba spent years launching rockets at our southeastern coast.  No sovereign state would resign itself to having its cities bombarded. That is the reason for the military campaign that Israel launched.Israel had no choice but to launch a military attack against Hamas. Israel’s operations were defensive, a response to the thousands of rockets that have been fired from Gaza into Israel. It has gone to extreme lengths to avoid killing civilians, but the necessary military actions have sadly resulted in the deaths of innocents.Every death is a tragedy, whether the victim is an Israeli or a Palestinian. You can’t be a decent human being without being affected.  And what is so appalling is that nothing that has happened in Gaza needed to happen. All it took to avoid all the suffering was for Hamas to end firing rockets on Israeli civilians.We hope a time will come when Israelis and Palestinians will live together in peace, no longer attacking one another, but helping one another to live in peace and security, in freedom and dignity.Even during this time, we hope and pray for the day when Israelis and Palestinians will build a place of peace and progress in the Middle East. The IDF spokesman announced early on Sunday morning that at 11:25 p.m.on Saturday, the Chief Rabbi of the IDF, Brigadier Gen. Rafi Peretz, declared the death of IDF officer, Lt. Hadar Goldin, who fell in the Gaza Strip on Friday.The decision was made according to the findings of a special board, headed by the rabbi, who examined the details of the incident and related to medical, halachic and other relevant considerations.The message was delivered to the family by the Head of Personnel, Major General Orna Barbibay and Chief Military Rabbi, Brigadier - Gen. Rafi Peretz.Earlier, after the end of the Shabbat, Goldin's parents expressed their shock at rumors that the IDF was beginning to withdraw from Gaza, and urged the government not to abandon their son."I am a Battalion Commander in the reserves, I performed reserves duty until I was 50. "They are the ones who killed Major Benaya Sarel and First Sgt. Liel Gidoni, of blessed memory, and kidnapped Second Lt. Hadar Goldin.""I would like now to give strength and support to Goldin's family, as well as the family of Golani soldier Oron Shaul, of blessed memory, whose gravesite remains unknown at this time," he added.Ya'alon then turned to the matter of the IDF's future in Gaza. "We are near completion of our mission to destroy and neutralize terror tunnels in the Gaza offensive, and so far very impressive work has been carried out by commanders and IDF soldiers," he said. WASHINGTON (AP) — Following the quick collapse of the cease-fire in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the White House not to force a truce with Palestinian militants on Israel.Sources familiar with conversations between Netanyahu and senior U.S. officials, including Secretary of State John Kerry, say the Israeli leader advised the Obama administration "not to ever second guess me again" on the matter. The officials also said Netanyahu said he should be "trusted" on the issue and about the unwillingness of Hamas to enter into and follow through on cease-fire talks.The Obama administration on Friday condemned "outrageous" violations of an internationally brokered Gaza cease-fire by Palestinian militants and called the apparent abduction of an Israeli soldier a "barbaric" action.The strong reaction came as top Israeli officials questioned the effort to forge the truce, accusing the U.S. and the United Nations of being naive in assuming the radical Hamas movement would adhere with its terms. The officials also blamed the Gulf state of Qatar for not forcing the militants to comply.With the cease-fire in tatters fewer than two hours after it took effect with an attack that killed two Israeli troops and left a third missing, President Barack Obama demanded that those responsible release the soldier.Obama and other U.S. officials did not directly blame Hamas for the abduction. But they made clear they hold Hamas responsible for, or having influence over, the actions of all factions in the Gaza Strip. The language was a distinct change from Thursday when Washington was focused on the deaths of Palestinian civilians."If they are serious about trying to resolve this situation, that soldier needs to be unconditionally released as soon as possible," Obama told reporters. JERUSALEM/GAZA (Reuters) - Israel will go on fighting Hamas in the Gaza Strip even after the army completes its core mission of destroying the cross-border tunnels used by Palestinian militants to attack its territory, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday.As Israeli television showed live footage of some tanks withdrawing from Gaza in an apparent winding down of the 25-day campaign, Netanyahu said Hamas would pay an "intolerable price" if it continued to attack Israel.Israel began its air and naval offensive against Gaza on July 8 following a surge of cross-border rocket salvoes by Hamas and other guerrillas, later escalating into ground incursions.Shelling exchanges continued earlier on Saturday, pushing the Gaza death toll given by Palestinian officials up to 1,675, most of them civilians. Israel has confirmed that 63 soldiers have died in combat, while Palestinian shelling has also killed three civilians in Israel.Netanyahu's comments came as Israel signaled it was taking action to withdraw on its own terms, saying it would not attend talks in Cairo this weekend aimed at achieving a new truce.In some areas of Gaza, witnesses saw Israeli tanks pulling back towards the border, while the Israeli military gave Palestinians who had fled one town the all-clear to return.Israel's main goal in its incursion into Gaza last month was to destroy Hamas's network of tunnels, and the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) said they were close to achieving that.More than 30 tunnels and dozens of access shafts have been unearthed and were being blown up, the military said."Our understanding is that our objectives, most importantly the destruction of the tunnels, are close to completion," a military spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Lerner, said.Netanyahu said in a televised speech that military action would continue even after that goal is achieved."After completing the anti-tunnel operation, the IDF will act and continue to act, in accordance with our security needs and only according to our defense needs, until we achieve our objective of restoring security to you, Israel's citizens," he said.

"PAY FOR EVERY MINUTE"Hamas said it was absurd for Israel to claim to have destroyed all the tunnels. "Netanyahu will pay for every minute he spends carrying out more aggression against our people," a spokesman said.Several ceasefires between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist movement that dominates the Gaza Strip, have failed to take hold or quickly collapsed, most recently on Friday after two Israeli soldiers were killed and a third went missing in an ambush.Israel accused Hamas of seizing Second-Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, and the United States blamed the group for a "barbaric" breach of the truce. "Gaza resisted, endured and will achieve victory."

But fear still gripped the townspeople."No one has told us to go back," said Talab Manna, a 30-year-old father of seven camped out at a U.N.-run school serving as a refugee haven. "We can't risk going back and being bombed by the Israeli forces."Quoting a senior military officer, Israel Radio said the condition of the missing soldier was not known. It said Goldin was last seen next to the two troops killed by a Hamas suicide bomber - suggesting he may not have survived and his captors had a corpse.Hamas had long threatened to capture Israelis for a prisoner swap. In 2011, Israel released more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Gilad Shalit, a soldier snatched by Hamas five years earlier. Pope Francis has sent out a number of appeals for prayers in light of the escalating violence in the Middle East and especially on the intensification of violence in the Gaza Strip. There is nothing futile in taking action to promote peace. Prayer does have an effect and we must not back away from our spiritual responsibility. Appeals inspired by faith and diplomacy are both useful as means of questioning the actions of parties at war and also as a means of getting the international community to take the issue to heart.”Are religions doing little to promote peace?“Religions could have done more. All one needs to do is step inside the Holy Sepulchre and witness the tiny spaces dividing them to realize how Christians are not setting a good example with their rivalries in this troubled part of the world. We cannot just stand by and watch as so many innocent people, women, children and elderly are massacred. Indifference fuels feelings of revenge and hatred. Children growing up in the Middle East, in this climate of head to head conflict, develops a sense of enmity, which will be difficult to erase from their souls later on in life.”What possible solution would you suggest? “Education needs to be the starting point. Peaceful coexistence will never be possible if Israeli and Palestinian children don’t start to learn to understand one another. No one has the right to give into anger, revenge or further violence. There is no justification for this. One cannot help but feel a sense of horror and indignation when they witness people dying like this. Repugnance is the only possible reaction. Change comes from within ourselves.”What can Catholics do? “Diplomacy alone cannot bring change. Change must come from within our own consciences. Intolerance is also spreading in our part of the world. Alarming cases of hatred and closed-mindedness are also witnessed in our cities, which are miles away from the Middle Eastern scenes of conflict. They are a consequence of a culture of contempt that has spread in recent years: contempt toward foreigners and Roma people especially, but also generally towards others, particularly the vulnerable. There is widespread violence in our own societies as well: violent feelings, words and attitudes, which manifest themselves in continuous fighting, in anger, in a lack of respect and in people’s aggressive reactions the minute someone so much as touches them or hurts them. Blind rivalry is destructive and sterile and undermines the very foundations of a community.What is the danger? A climate of widespread hostility? “The danger right now, in this difficult time, is the false belief that a scapegoat will solve things: we can only save ourselves together. Racism and intolerance are sicknesses which distort the image of a community, making it more ugly and less livable for everyone. Intolerance casts our minds back to dark moments in history that bring nothing but pain and destruction. A new culture of dialogue is needed, not one of contempt. Most importantly, verbal violence needs to stop: too often in recent years, words have contributed to that culture of rejection which has led to the contaminated and oppressive climate that currently surround us.”
