Pollard opposed to release, minister says-Sources close to long-serving convicted spy say he is against such a ‘shameful deal,’ Uri Ariel tells Army Radio-By AP April 1, 2014, 10:57 am-The times of Israel

Convicted spy Jonathan Pollard opposes being freed from a US jail in exchange for Palestinians prisoners, Housing Minister Uri Ariel said Tuesday.Ariel said people close to Pollard have told him that he opposes such a “shameful deal.”Ariel, from the hard-line Jewish Home party, spoke to Army Radio on Tuesday. He said he, too, is against the release of “murderers” for Pollard.Talk of the possibility of Pollard’s early release has arisen as an incentive in the troubled Mideast peace negotiations. The idea is that if he is freed, Israel would make concessions and release more Palestinian prisoners.Pollard was a civilian intelligence analyst for the US Navy when he gave classified documents to Israeli handlers. He was arrested in 1985 and later sentenced to life in prison.

Pollard-for-prisoners deal said to be near completion-Three-way agreement would see partial settlement freeze, hundreds of Palestinians released, but sides waiting for Ramallah to sign on
By Times of Israel staff and AFP April 1, 2014, 1:07 pm 8

A tripartite deal between the US, Israel and the Palestinians which would see Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard freed in exchange for a partial settlement construction freeze and the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners was nearing completion on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.Under the proposed deal peace, talks between Israel and the Palestinians would be extended into 2015 and Pollard would be released in the next two weeks, a source close to the talks said.Israel would also commit to put an unofficial moratorium on settlement building for the next eight months under the agreement, though it would not extend to East Jerusalem.“Israel did not accept the Palestinian demand for total and complete settlement freeze but agreed to adopt a policy of restraint concerning government tenders” in the West Bank, the source told The Times of Israel.Under the terms, Israel will soon release the last 27 prisoners from the 104 agreed to when peace talks began in July.In addition, another 400 low-level prisoners, not convicted of violent crimes, would be set free. This group would include women, children and inmates with only a few months of incarceration left, the source said. The identity of the prisoners would be decided partly by Israel and partly by the Palestinian Authority.According to Israel Radio, the agreement was waiting for approval from Ramallah.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with senior Likud party members on Tuesday to elaborate on the details of the plan and enlist their support. According to Maariv, the right-wing Jewish Home party would not torpedo the agreement despite its opposition to additional prisoner releases.Earlier in the day US Secretary of State John Kerry held a second round of talks with Netanyahu amid a push to salvage faltering peace efforts. The breakfast meeting came after Kerry made a surprise trip to Israel to keep the talks on track amid a bitter tussle over the expected release of Palestinian prisoners.Although Kerry was scheduled to leave for a NATO meeting in Brussels on Tuesday morning, a senior Palestinian source said he would return to the region within 24 hours for talks with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.“Kerry will fly to Europe today for previous engagements and will come back to meet the president tomorrow at noon,” the Palestinian source told AFP.Talks with Abbas were canceled Monday when a meeting with Netanyahu dragged on too late. Kerry met instead with the chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat and Palestinian intelligence chief Majid Faraj. The two presented Kerry with Ramallah’s demands in exchange for agreeing to extend talks until the end of the year, including the release of nearly a thousand Palestinian prisoners, according to reports in Arab media. On Monday, sources said the release of US-born Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard was a way to unblock the talks impasse and coax Israel into agreeing to the releases and the settlement freeze.Pollard was arrested in Washington in 1985 and condemned to life imprisonment for spying on the United States on behalf of Israel. One proposal could see Pollard freed before the week-long Jewish holiday of Passover, which begins in mid-April.In exchange, Israel would release the final batch of prisoners as well as another group of detainees, and the sides would agree to extend the talks.State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki, however, refused to be drawn, saying: “Jonathan Pollard was convicted of espionage and is serving his sentence. I do not have any update for you on his status.”A number of Israeli officials have said the release of the prisoners would be too high a price to pay for Pollard’s freedom.Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon told Israel Radio Tuesday he would quit the government if Israel went ahead with the deal, even with Pollard thrown in.The Palestinians on Monday gave Kerry a 24-hour deadline to come up with a solution to the row over the release of the Palestinian prisoners, or threatened to go to UN bodies later in the day to press their claims for statehood.Erekat said the PA would not discuss extending talks until the fourth group of inmates — including several Israeli citizens — was released, according to Haaretz.Jerusalem had not given any indication if it is still considering the release, which could bring down Netanyahu’s government.US officials insist things are moving, saying only that there were a lot of complex pieces to put in place. It appears that Kerry is shifting his focus away from reaching a framework deal toward simply keeping the two sides talking after an April 29 deadline expires.Avi Issacharoff and Raphael Ahren contributed to this report.

Iron Dome accidentally fired in Eilat, setting off rocket fears-Residents say two loud explosions heard in southern city, but army says no rockets shot-By Times of Israel staff April 1, 2014, 8:00 am Updated: April 1, 2014, 8:44 am

Loud explosions echoed across Eilat early Tuesday morning, after two projectiles were mistakenly fired from an Iron Dome anti-missile battery stationed there. The loud booms raised fears of rocket fire on the southern city and sent security forces scrambling to find the source of the fire. However, an army spokesperson said that the explosions were from two Iron Dome anti-missile projectiles being accidentally fired at about 7:40 a.m.Initial reports indicated that up to three Grad rockets were shot at the city, but the Israel Defense Forces said Eilat was not targeted. An army spokesperson said that the Iron Dome battery, which only fires on command, was being checked.Soldiers manning the batteries are instructed to err on the side of caution and fire if they think there may be a threat, Channel 10 reported. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Residents said no siren sounded. An airplane preparing to land in the city was forced to circle during the false alarm before being able to touch down safely, Walla reported. In late January two rockets were fired at the Red Sea resort city from Sinai, with one being shot down by an Iron Dome battery stationed there. An al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group that operates in the Sinai and Gaza, Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, claimed responsibility for that attack. The group said in a statement that the rocket attack was prompted by “the cooperation between Egypt and Israel and the bombing of Gaza residents.”Eilat, which sits just a few kilometers from the border with Egypt, is sporadically targeted by militants in the largely lawless Sinai

Jordan’s Abdullah: Chance for peace deal won’t be repeated-In meeting with opposition leader Herzog in Amman, Jordanian leader calls on sides to not let negotiations ‘blow up’-By Haviv Rettig Gur March 31, 2014, 5:31 pm-the times of israel

Jordan’s king called on Israeli and Palestinian leaders to stick with negotiations Monday, saying the chance for peace would not come again.King Abdullah II made the statements while meeting with Israeli opposition leader MK Isaac Herzog (Labor) in Amman Monday morning.“There is a one-time opportunity to reach an agreement in the Middle East, and we must find the formula that doesn’t blow up the negotiations,” the Jordanian leader told Herzog, according to a statement from Herzog’s office.Herzog emphasized the support of opposition parties, including his own Labor party, for US-brokered peace talks currently underway. The palace confirmed the meeting, but offered no further details on what was said. It said in a statement, “The king and the head of the Labor Party and member of the Knesset Isaac Herzog discussed efforts to achieve peace between Israel and the Palestinians under the sponsorship of the United States.”Herzog used the meeting to offer condolences for an incident in early March in which Jordanian-Palestinian judge Raed Zeiter was shot dead by an IDF soldier at the Allenby border crossing between Israel and Jordan. The incident remains under investigation.“I want to offer my sincere apologies over the incident,” said Herzog, who was reportedly the first Israeli to meet the Jordanian king since the incident. “I hope the joint investigative committee will discover the truth and deliver its conclusions quickly.”AFP contributed to this report.

Palestinians give Kerry 24 hours to solve prisoner crisis-‘If we don’t get an answer on prisoners tonight, we’ll ask for membership in UN agencies tomorrow,’ Palestinian MP warns-By AFP March 31, 2014, 11:44 pm 8-the times of israel

RAMALLAH – The Palestinians on Monday gave US Secretary of State John Kerry 24 hours to resolve a dispute with Israel over prisoners after which they will resume moves to seek international recognition.“If we don’t get an answer from John Kerry on the prisoners tonight, we’ll begin to ask for membership in all UN agencies tomorrow,” Palestinian MP Mustafa Barghouti told AFP following a top-level leadership meeting in Ramallah which took place as Kerry arrived in Israel.US peace efforts are teetering on the brink of collapse after Israel refused to free a group of 26 long-serving Palestinian prisoners under an agreement which brought the sides back to the negotiating table in July 2013.Furious Palestinian officials have warned that unless Israel changes its stance on the prisoner releases, it could signal the end of the talks.Another Palestinian official who attended the meeting in Ramallah told AFP “the Israeli government violated the agreements and must bear the consequences of its decisions.”The two Palestinian officials also said that the leadership had confirmed there was “no link between the release of Palestinian prisoners and the extension of negotiations.”Top officials also agreed there would be no extension of talks without a “comprehensive” freeze on settlement construction in the West Bank and annexed east Jerusalem, they said. The peace talks, which have so far yielded no obvious results, are due to draw to a close on April 29 and US efforts are currently focused on getting the parties to agree to an extension.Kerry arrived on Monday evening from Paris for a flying visit and met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Kerry had planned to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas late Monday, but the meeting was delayed until Tuesday morning. He was to return to Europe on Tuesday morning, officials said.

Pollard may be released as part of negotiations deal, officials say-Israeli-American spy could be freed from US prison ‘as soon as April’ as part of bid to keep faltering peace talks alive-By AP, Times of Israel staff and AFP March 31, 2014, 9:28 pm 11-the times of israel

Imprisoned Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard may be released from American incarceration as part of a deal being negotiation by the US, Israel and the Palestinians to keep peace talks on track, unnamed sources involved in the negotiations said Monday.Sources close to the talks told Reuters and the Associated Press that the US and Israel were discussing Pollard’s early release. The report came as US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Israel to meet with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in a bid to salvage the faltering eight-month-old peace talksAccording to Reuters, Pollard could be released by mid-April in return for Israel releasing a final wave of 27 prisoners from its jails. Further, Israel would release an additional batch of detainees and peace talks would be extended past the April 29 deadline agreed to in July, Reuters’ sources said.A source speaking to the AP cautioned that such a step by the United States — which would be a dramatic turnaround from previous refusals — was far from a done deal and that discussions with Israel on the matter are ongoing. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the negotiations on the record.A senior official in the Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment to The Times of Israel, but did not deny the reports. An Israeli official confirmed that Pollard’s release could be part of deal to extend talks, but that chances were low, Israel Radio reported. White House spokesman Jay Carney responded to the reports of Pollard’s possible release saying, ”He is a person who is convicted of espionage and is serving his sentence, and I don’t have any update on his situation.”Pollard, a US naval analyst, was imprisoned by the US in 1987 after being caught spying for Israel. Successive Israeli governments have lobbied Washington for his release, with no success. He is due to be paroled late next year.Last week, Israel’s Army Radio revealed that the United States had proposed freeing Pollard in a trade-off deal in which Israel would agree to proceed with the next round of prisoner releases, including Israeli Arab prisoners, and the Palestinian Authority would agreed to extend the current peace talks. It said the offer had been conveyed to Israel and the PA, but there was no official confirmation. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki was quoted telling journalists accompanying Secretary of State John Kerry to a meeting with PA President Mahmoud Abbas Wednesday morning that there were currently no plans to release Pollard, who is serving a life sentence.Peace talks have stagnated and threatened to fall apart in recent days after Israel refused to release the final batch of prisoners, said to contain a number of Israeli citizens, saying the Palestinians were not negotiating in good faith.Kerry rushed to the Middle East on Monday for a surprise visit aimed at rescuing his Mideast diplomatic efforts, as peace talks approached a critical make-or-break point.Kerry went straight to Jerusalem and began talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accompanied by his envoy Martin Indyk and US ambassador Dan Shapiro, an AFP correspondent said.Israel’s chief negotiator Tzipi Livni was also present. He will travel to the West Bank city of Ramallah to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The Palestinians on Monday gave Kerry 24 hours to resolve a dispute with Israel over prisoners after which they will resume moves to seek international recognition.“If we don’t get an answer from John Kerry on the prisoners tonight, we’ll begin to ask for membership in all UN agencies tomorrow,” Palestinian MP Mustafa Barghuti told AFP following a top-level leadership meeting in Ramallah which took place as Kerry arrived in Israel.Furious Palestinian officials have warned that unless Israel changes its stance on the prisoner releases, it could signal the end of the talks.Another Palestinian official who attended the meeting in Ramallah told AFP “the Israeli government violated the agreements and must bear the consequences of its decisions”.The two Palestinian officials also said that the leadership had confirmed there was “no link between the release of Palestinian prisoners and the extension of negotiations” Kerry has been working frantically in recent days trying to salvage the embattled peace process. A senior US official said Kerry spoke with Israeli and Palestinian leaders all morning from Paris, as well as with the White House, before deciding to go back to the region. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter with the media.American mediators have been holding urgent talks to resolve a standoff over a promised Israeli prisoner release, and to find a formula to extend the talks beyond a current late-April deadline. If the prisoner release, which was scheduled to happen by the end of March, does not take place, the negotiations risk collapse in the coming weeks. The Palestinian leadership set a meeting to discuss developments Monday evening in the West Bank city of Ramallah. There was no immediate comment from the office of Israel’s prime minister.Under heavy pressure from Kerry, Israel and the Palestinians agreed last July to hold nine months of peace talks, setting a late-April deadline for a final agreement. When that became unrealistic, Kerry scaled back his goals and said he would aim for a preliminary “framework” agreement by April, with the goal of continuing negotiations through the end of the year to iron out the final details of a deal. But even that more modest goal has run into trouble due to a snag over the prisoner release. When the talks began last summer, Israel promised to free 104 long-serving Palestinian prisoners in four stages. After carrying out the first three releases, Israel has balked at releasing the final group without a Palestinian commitment to extend talks.Israeli officials say they are under no obligation to carry out the final release because of what they say is a Palestinian failure to negotiate in good faith. The prisoner issue is deeply emotional on both sides. The Palestinians consider the roughly 5,000 Palestinians held by Israel to be heroes and freedom fighters. Israel considers them terrorists. The prisoners have all served lengthy terms after being convicted in bloody attacks on Israelis, and the scenes of freed prisoners returning to jubilant celebrations have angered the Israeli public.Israel says it is under no obligation to free the last group of prisoners, claiming the Palestinians have not negotiated in “good faith.” The Palestinians say Israel is obligated to carry out the release. They are demanding additional gestures, including the release of another 1,000 prisoners and a halt to Israeli settlement construction on war-won lands, in return for extending peace talks.Kerry had met in Paris with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on how to calm tensions and de-escalate the crisis in Ukraine.

Palestinians reject Israel talks proposal as ‘blackmail’-Official in Ramallah calls attempt by Jerusalem to condition prisoner release on extending talks ‘weak’-By AFP March 31, 2014, 8:24 pm 7-the times of israel

RAMALLAH — Palestinian leaders have rejected an Israeli proposal to extend the crumbling peace talks beyond April 29, saying it was akin to “blackmail,” an official in Ramallah told AFP on Monday.
“Israel is practicing a policy of blackmail and linking its agreement to releasing the fourth batch of prisoners with the Palestinians accepting to extend the negotiations,” the official said following a late-night meeting in Jerusalem between the two negotiating teams. His remarks were made as US Secretary of State John Kerry was heading to Israel from Paris in a bid to prevent the collapse of the crisis-hit talks.US peace efforts took a major blow at the weekend when Israel refused to free a group of 26 veteran Palestinian prisoners under an agreement which brought the sides back to the negotiating table in July 2013.The Palestinians say that unless the prisoners are freed, they won’t even discuss a possible extension of peace talks, but Israel has refused to release the detainees without first securing a Palestinian commitment to continue the talks beyond April 29.“Israel made a proposal which was refused by the Palestinians,” the official told AFP, describing the proposal as “weak.”In exchange for Palestinian agreement to continue the talks, Israel had offered to free the fourth batch of detainees and to releasing another 420 others. But that number would only involve those serving light sentences for minor offenses and would not include sick detainees, nor women and children. And it would not include any heavyweight political names such as Marwan Barghouti, who masterminded the second Palestinian uprising, or Ahmad Saadat, head of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The Palestinians are understood to have several conditions for extending the talks with Israel, including the release of more security prisoners and a freeze on Israeli settlement construction which has continued freely over the past eight months of talks.“The proposal includes a partial settlement freeze in the West Bank but excludes East Jerusalem, and would include continued building in areas where tenders have already been published,” he said.He accused Israel of trying to string out the negotiations indefinitely while continuing to build facts on the ground.“The Israeli proposal aims to continue the negotiations indefinitely, without any results, in parallel with continued settlement building,” he charged.“It’s a very difficult situation and the peace process is in real danger because of Israeli policy.”Read more: Palestinians reject Israel talks proposal as 'blackmail' | The Times of Israel

Police arrest gang for raiding Second Temple-era tomb-Suspects apprehended while meeting with prospective buyers-By AFP March 31, 2014, 4:23 pm-the times of israel
Police and antiquities inspectors have arrested a gang accused of looting ancient Jewish burial caskets from a cave in the Jerusalem area, the Israel Antiquities Authority said on Monday.“They were caught while in possession of 11 decorated stone ossuaries — ancient coffins — that the Jewish population used for burial in the Second Temple period, 2,000 years ago,” the IAA said in a statement.“Some of the ossuaries still contained the skeletal remains of the deceased,” it said. The suspects, from the West Bank, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, were arrested on Friday as they met prospective Jewish clients at a crossing point between the West Bank and Israeli annexed east Jerusalem.“Shallow engravings, etched in the past by means of a sharp stylus, were found on the walls of two of the seized ossuaries. They cite the names of the deceased whose bones were collected in the coffins,” the IAA said. One of the ossuaries bore the name “Ralfin,” written in squared Hebrew script “characteristic of the Second Temple period,” the statement said.“There is no doubt that the ossuaries were recently looted from a magnificent burial cave in Jerusalem,” it added.

Partner of MH370 passenger acuses governments of cover up on BBC--March 29, 2014  5:40 PM EDT-Partner of MH370 passenger acuses governments of cover up on BBC-In a BBC interview, the partner of missing passenger says that the MH370 flight was stolen and taken to an undisclosed location, due to the number of high-profile passengers aboard with ties to defense contractors.--By John Vibes

MALAYSIA (INTELLIHUB) — Sarah Bajc, a 48-year-old American teacher recently appeared on BBC News to discuss the disappearance of her partner Phillip Wood.Phillip Wood is one of the 277 passengers aboard the missing Malaysian flight.  Sarah Bajc is among a large number of friends of family members who don’t believe official reports that the plane crashed and killed everyone inside. The many governments involved in this investigation are not putting forward any evidence to the theories that they are suggesting, and to make matters even more confusing, the apparent evidence continues to change by the day.During her interview on the BBC, Sarah Bajc not only said that the governments involved in the investigation were intentionally misleading the world, but she also called attention to the suspicious number of high-profile people aboard the plane, many of whom had connections with defense contractors. As we reported earlier this week, there were at least 20 passengers on the plane who were “extremely talented and valuable” employees of Freescale Semiconductor Ltd., a Rothschild front group currently researching highly sensitive technology.During the interview Sarah Bajc also said that there is no evidence that the plane crashed at all.  She believes that the plane was stolen and taken somewhere, in order to kidnap the high-profile people who were on it.

Australia PM vows to continue hunt for missing Malaysia plane
By Michael Martina 1 hour ago-MAR 31,14-YAHOONEWS

PERTH (Reuters) - Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Monday the hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 had no time limit, despite the failure of an international operation to find any sign of the plane in three weeks of fruitless searching.A total of 20 aircraft and ships were again scouring a massive area in the Indian Ocean some 2,000 km (1,200 miles) west of Perth, where investigators believe the Boeing 777 carrying 239 people came down."I'm certainly not putting a time limit on it," Abbott told reporters after meeting flight crews at Pearce airbase in Perth."The intensity of our search and the magnitude of our operations is increasing, not decreasing," he said, adding that searchers owed it to grieving families of passengers to continue the hunt. Some families have strongly criticized Malaysia's handling of the search and investigation, including the decision last week to say that, based on satellite evidence, the plane had crashed in the southern Indian Ocean on March 8.Abbott rejected suggestions his Malaysian counterpart, Najib Razak, had been too hasty to break that news, given that no confirmed wreckage from the plane has been found and its last sighting on radar was northwest of Malaysia heading towards India."No, the accumulation of evidence is that the aircraft has been lost and it has been lost somewhere in the south of the Indian Ocean," he said.Najib will travel to the western Australian city of Perth, the base for the search, on Wednesday to see the operations first hand, Malaysia's government said.Malaysia says the plane, which disappeared less than an hour into a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, was likely diverted deliberately far off course. Investigators have determined no apparent motive or other red flags among the 227 passengers or the 12 crew.China has also been critical in Malaysia's handling of the case, but in a sign of softening, the official China Daily said it was understandable that not all sensitive information could be made public." Although the Malaysian government's handling of the crisis has been quite clumsy, we need to understand that this is perhaps the most bizarre incident in Asia civil aviation history," the editorial on Monday read."Public opinion should not blame the Malaysian authorities for deliberately covering up information in the absence of hard evidence."

MORE FLOTSAM

Dozens of items have been spotted since Australian authorities moved the search 1,100 km (685 miles) north after new analysis of radar and satellite data, but none has been linked to Flight MH370.Several orange items recovered on Sunday turned out to be fishing equipment, a spokesman from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said."Yesterday's finds were nothing of note, nothing related to the plane," he said.A multinational air search team and 10 ships, including seven Chinese vessels, two Australian navy craft and a merchant ship, were searching the area on Monday.A Malaysian frigate arrived at HMAS Stirling naval base near Perth for briefings on the search area, AMSA added. The new search area, while closer to Perth and subject to calmer weather, is also closer to an area of the Indian Ocean where currents drag all manner of flotsam and rubbish."I would say the search area is located just outside of what we call the garbage patches," Erik van Sebille, an oceanographer at the University of New South Wales said."However, there is much more debris there than in the Southern Ocean. Debris from Western Australia that ends up in the garbage patches will have to move through the search area."But the greatest problem remains the vast search area, roughly the size of Poland or New Mexico."If you compare this to Air France Flight 447, we had much better positional information of where that aircraft went into the water," U.S. Navy Captain Mark Matthews said on Sunday , referring to a plane that crashed in 2009 near Brazil and which took more than two years to find.Among the vessels due to join the search in the coming days is an Australian defense force ship, the Ocean Shield, that has been fitted with a sophisticated U.S. black box locator and an underwater drone. That equipment cannot be used until "conclusive visual evidence" of debris is found, U.S. Navy spokesman Commander William Marks told CBS's "Face the Nation" program. If no location is found, searchers would have to use sonar to methodically map the bottom of the ocean, he said. "That is an incredibly long process to go through. It is possible, but it could take quite a while," he said.Time is running out because the signal transmitted by the black box will die about 30 days after a crash due to limited battery life, leaving investigators with a vastly more difficult task.Malaysia's acting transport minister, Hishammuddin Hussein, said he would discuss the deployment of "more specific military assets" during a regional defense ministers' meeting with the United States in Hawaii that he is attending from Tuesday."I shall be discussing with the United States, and our other friends and allies, how best we can acquire the assets needed for possible deep sea search and recovery," said Hishammuddin, who is also Malaysia's defense minister.(Additional reporting by Morag MacKinnon and Matt Siegel in Perth, Jane Wardell and Lincoln Feast in Sydney, Adam Jourdan in Shanghai and Andrea Shalal in Washington; Writing by Lincoln Feast; Editing by Alex Richardson)

Germany ready to reinforce Nato-Russia borders
Today @ 09:27-mar 31,14-euobserver-By Andrew Rettman

BERLIN - Germany has said its air force is ready to increase security on Nato’s border with Russia, despite Moscow’s promise not to escalate the crisis in Ukraine.A German defence ministry spokeswoman told the Reuters news agency on Sunday (30 March) “the army could take part in flights to patrol airspace with Awacs machines [surveillance planes] over Romania and Poland as well as training flights in the framework of a Nato air policing mission over Baltic states”.The statement comes after Denmark and the US in the past few weeks agreed to send more than a dozen extra F-16 fighter jets to the region. It also comes after the Pentagon, on Friday, told Nato’s military chief, US general Philip Breedlove, to return from Washington to the Nato HQ in Brussels. Its spokesman said the move “does not foreshadow imminent military action in Ukraine”. But he added that “lack of transparency” and “growing uncertainty” over Russia’s mobilisation of tens of thousands of troops on Ukrainian borders merits caution.Russia has not made any explicit threats to former Communist or former Soviet countries in the Nato alliance. But Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s speech on 18 March, in which he promised to protect ethnic Russians abroad, has raised concerns he could stir up trouble among Russian minorities in Baltic states. He said in a phone call to the White House on Friday that the Russian-occupied region of Transniestria, in EU-aspirant country Moldova, is also in his sights. “[He] pointed out that Transniestria is essentially experiencing a blockade, which significantly complicates the living conditions for the region’s residents, impeding their movement and normal trade and economic activities,” a Kremlin statement on the phone call said.High-level Russia-US diplomacy continued on Sunday when US secretary of state John Kerry held a snap meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, in Paris.Lavrov told Russian TV ahead of the event that Ukraine should become a federation of autonomous regions, each of which is free to conduct its own “external economic and cultural connections with neighbouring countries”.
He added: “Given the proportion of native Russians [in Ukraine], we propose this and we are sure there is no other way [to solve the crisis].”Kerry told press after the meeting: “It’s not up to us to make any decision or any agreement regarding federalisation. We talked about it. But it’s up to Ukrainians, and Ukrainians will decide their future for themselves.”He noted that Russia has the legal right to amass forces near Ukraine because “the troops are in Russia on Russian soil”.He also said, however: “The question is one of strategic appropriateness and whether it’s smart at this moment in time to have that number of troops massed on a border when you’re trying to send a message conceivably that you want to de-escalate and begin to move in the other direction.”Lavrov in his TV address also scoffed at EU and US blacklists of Russian MPs, officials, and military chiefs. “We find little joy in that, but there are no painful sensations. We have lived through tougher times,” he noted. The EU has threatened to impose broader sanctions on Russian energy firms and banks if Putin invades Ukraine. But for the time being it is business as usual, with Russian oligarch Mikhail Fridman proceeding with his acquisition of German energy firm Dea in a deal worth €5.2 billion, and with Russia’s state-owned Gazprom continuing to swap assets with Wintershall, a subsidiary of German company Basf.

Germany mulls military support for NATO's eastern European states
MAR 31,14-Yahoonews

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany is considering offering military support to some eastern European members of the NATO defense alliance in response to Russia's seizure of Crimea, news magazine Der Spiegel reported at the weekend.Germany, whose diplomatic clout falls far short of its economic might on the world stage, has said it wants to take a more active international role and Chancellor Angela Merkel and her foreign minister have been active in trying to resolve the Ukraine crisis. However, Germany's Nazi past makes military missions overseas a very sensitive subject.Der Spiegel said the defense ministry was ready to make available up to six aircraft for a strengthened air patrolling mission in parts of eastern Europe. The number of NATO aircraft would be at least doubled, said the magazine.NATO is expanding its air patrolling mission to reassure eastern members of the alliance following events in Ukraine. Der Spiegel quoted German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier as saying it was important for NATO to keep a cool head and not get dragged into a military escalation."At the same time, our partners know that we stand for solidarity in the alliance with no ifs and buts and not just when the weather suits," der Spiegel quoted. In response to the report, a defense ministry spokeswoman said any army mission must be first decided by politicians. But once a political decision had been made "the army could take part in flights to patrol airspace with AWACS machines over Romania and Poland as well as training flights in the framework of a NATO air policing mission over Baltic states", she said.Denmark will send six F16 fighters to the Baltic countries to help patrol their airspace, Foreign Minister Martin Lidegaard said on Thursday, while officials in France signaled earlier this month it might send four planes to Lithuania if NATO decided to boost air defenses.U.S. President Barack Obama said earlier this month that NATO needed to boost its presence in eastern European partner states that feel vulnerable to Russia.(Additional reporting by Sabine Siebold; Writing by Madeline Chambers; Editing by John Stonestreet)

Russian prime minister flaunts grip on Crimea with visit
By Darya Korsunskaya 1 hour ago-MAR 31,14-YAHOONEWS

SIMFEROPOL, Crimea (Reuters) - Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev flaunted Russia's grip on Crimea on Monday by flying to the region and announcing plans to turn it into a special economic zone, defying Western demands to hand the region back to Ukraine. The visit, hours after Russia held talks on Ukraine with the United States, is likely to anger Kiev and the West, which accuse president Vladimir Putin of illegally seizing the Black Sea peninsula after a March 16 referendum they say was a sham.Shortly after landing in Crimea's main city of Simferopol with many members of his cabinet, Medvedev chaired a Russian government meeting attended by Crimean leaders and outlined moves to revive the region's struggling economy."Our aim is to make the peninsula as attractive as possible to investors, so that it can generate sufficient income for its own development. There are opportunities for this - we have taken everything into consideration," he told the televised meeting, sitting at a large desk with Russian flags behind him."And so we have decided to create a special economic zone here. This will allow for the use of special tax and customs regimes in Crimea, and also minimize administrative procedures."In comments that made clear Russia had no plans to give back Crimea, he set out moves to increase wages for some 140,000 state workers in Crimea, boost pensions, turn the region into a tourism hub, protect energy links with the peninsula and improve its roads, railways and airports.Russia's swift takeover of Crimea, following the ouster of Moscow ally Viktor Yanukovich as Ukraine's president in late February, has caused the biggest crisis in East-West relations since the Cold War.Medvedev's visit underlined the impotence of the West and Ukraine to force Russia out following the formal annexation of Crimea, signed by Putin, on March 21.Medvedev arrived in Simferopol hours after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Paris late on Sunday and reiterated that Washington considered Russia's actions in Crimea "illegal and illegitimate".The United States and European Union have imposed sanctions on Russian officials, lawmakers and allies of Putin. They are threatening broader measures if Russia, which has forces massed near Ukraine's eastern border, seeks to take more territory.

HEAVY FINANCIAL BURDEN

The absorption of Crimea and its 2 million residents creates an additional financial burden on Russia, which is struggling with slow growth, rising inflation, a weak currency and unusually high capital flight this year. But Medvedev's remarks indicated the Kremlin hopes Crimea, which he said had "colossal prospects" for tourism income, will become quickly self-sufficient.Finance minister Anton Siluanov said last week that Russia would spend up to 243 billion roubles ($6.82 billion) in Crimea this year, to be financed from the budget reserve. The ultimate cost of its action in Crimea is likely to be far higher: analysts in a Reuters poll last week slashed their forecasts for Russian economic growth. The region has an estimated 55 billion rouble budget deficit, and the peninsula has been dependent on Ukraine for 85 percent of its electricity, 90 percent of its drinking water and much of its food. The reliability of those supplies is now in question. The local authorities have said they will nationalize Ukrainian state-owned business, including energy producer Chernomorneftegaz which is exploring for oil and gas offshore.Apart from hosting a Russian naval base, Crimea's biggest industry is tourism as one of the former Soviet Union's few warm seaside resorts. But until now, 60 percent of visitors arrived from other parts of Ukraine, mostly by train.Making it an attractive destination for Russians will be more difficult, since they mainly arrive by air and have a wider choice of holiday destinations. Crimea would have to compete with Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and Egypt, as well as Russia's own brand new $50 billion Black Sea Olympic resort in Sochi.Kerry said after talks with Lavrov in Paris on Sunday that progress on resolving the crisis over Ukraine depended on a Russian troop pullback from Ukraine's borders.Moscow has said the buildup is part of Russian military exercises. It wants assurances that Russian-speaking regions in eastern and southern regions of Ukraine have extensive autonomy and wants Russian established as the second state language.(Additional reporting by Steve Gutterman and Maria Kiselyova; Writing by Timothy Heritage; Editing by Peter Graff)

North, South Korea trade artillery rounds into the sea-By Jack Kim 3 hours ago-mar 31,14-YAHOONEWS-Residents gather at a shelter on Baengnyeongdo, an island near the border with North Korea

NORTH KOREA SHOT 500 ROCKETS INTO SOUTH KOEAS SEA AND SOUTH KOREA FIRED 300 ROCKETS INTO NORTH KOREAS SEA.THE FIRST BLOOD MOON IS APRIL 16,14.ITS NO ACCIDENT THAT WAR SABERING IS STARTING UP.WE WILL SEE IF ISRAEL GETS IRAN AT THIS TIME ALSO.

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea fired more than 100 artillery rounds into South Korean waters as part of a drill on Monday, prompting the South to fire back, officials in Seoul said, but the exercise appeared to be more saber rattling from Pyongyang rather than the start of a military standoff. The North had flagged its intentions to conduct the exercise in response to U.N. condemnation of last week's missile launches by Pyongyang and against what it says are threatening military drills in the South by U.S. forces.North Korea also accused the South of "gangster-like" behavior at the weekend by "abducting" one of its fishing boats and threatened to retaliate. The South said it had sent the boat back after it drifted into its waters.More than 100 North Korean shells out of 500 or so fired landed in South Korean waters, prompting marines from the South to fire back with more than 300 rounds in the North's waters, defense officials in Seoul said.Seoul also scrambled F-15s on its side of the maritime border, they said."We believe the North's maritime firing is a planned provocation and an attempt to test our military's determination to defend the Northern Limit Line and to get an upper hand in South-North relations," South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said. The Northern Limit Line, a maritime border that wraps itself round a part of the North's coastline, has been the scene of frequent clashes and in 2010, four people were killed when North Korea shelled the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong."It's up to the two militaries either to recognize or reject their own claimed line, and challenge the other's - this goes back and forth, so this is probably another episode of that," said Daniel Pinkston of the International Crisis Group.Earlier in 2010, a South Korean naval vessel was sunk close to the line by what an international commission said was a North Korean torpedo, although the North denies involvement. The line was drawn up at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War and North Korea does not recognize it. The two sides are still technically at war as the conflict ended in a mere truce, not a treaty. The residents of Baengnyeong island, one of the remote islands close to the firing area, were evacuated to bomb shelters as a precaution, a government official said by telephone.North Korea has ratcheted up its rhetoric in recent weeks and conducted a series of missile launches, mostly short range, in response to what it sees as the threat posed by a series of joint U.S.-South Korean military drills that are held annually.

The current drill called Foal Eagle ends on April 18.

"At a time that South Korea and the United States are conducting military exercises using sophisticated equipment, the North is unlikely to be reckless enough to do anything that will lead to a sharp worsening of situation," said Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul."There is an element of trying to show displeasure at the South Korea-U.S. drills and to pressure the South, but it doesn't seem the North wants this to blow up into something bigger."China, which hosted several rounds of now-defunct multilateral talks aimed at ending the North's nuclear weapons program, nevertheless said it was concerned at the exchange of fire and called for restraint from both sides."The temperature is rising at present on the Korean peninsula, and this worries us," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in Beijing. He added that China was also concerned by the North's threat to carry out more nuclear tests.North Korea threatened nuclear strikes against the South and the United States last year after the United Nations tightened sanctions against it for conducting its third nuclear test.Financial markets in South Korea were unmoved by the latest developments with the stock market's benchmark KOSPI turning higher from early losses to finish up 0.2 percent and the won extending gains to end onshore trade up 0.4 percent against the dollar.(Additional reporting by James Pearson, Ju-min Park, Choonsik Yoo and Narae Kim in Seoul and Megha Rajagopalan in Beijing; Editing by Nick Macfie)

Building Freeze instead of Terrorist Releases?-Former Shin Bet head Yuval Diskin pushes construction freeze as a means of saving peace talks with the Palestinian Authority.By Uzi Baruch and Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 3/31/2014, 3:38 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Former Israeli Security Agency (ISA or Shin Bet) head Yuval Diskin strongly criticized the practice of releasing terrorists as a preconditon to peace talks, and joined left-wing MKs in suggesting that a building freeze in Judea and Samaria is a better option for "gestures" to the Palestinian Authority (PA). "We should remember that this terrorist release move would not have taken place at the current timing and could have been postponed to advanced stages of the negotiations, had there been a willingness to freeze settlement construction – even temporarily," Diskin claimed, in an article published in Yediot Aharonot on Monday." Such a move could have been of great value to the Palestinians, and I believe it contains diplomatic and political logic, not to mention the fact that it is a reversible move which could be canceled later on – unlike the release of terrorists." Diskin also attacked the leadership of the Jewish Home party and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu - as he has in the past - and noted that the first batch of terrorist releases was carried out relatively quietly. According to Diskin, this was due to a political deal between the Prime Minister and Jewish Home - the latter of which plays a large role in resistance to the terrorist releases, in his words. "The first stage of the terrorist release went by relatively peacefully, mainly due to a political deal which was likely devised between the prime minister and the leader of Jewish Home, the party which is now playing the role of leading the opposition to the release," he accused. "As part of the deal, Jewish Home would turn a blind eye to the deeply controversial release in exchange for 'hush money' in the form of new settlement construction bids for every stage." The claim that the Jewish Home agreed to a prisoner release in exchange for continued construction in Judea and Samaria has been strenuously denied by the party. The Palestinian Authority has similarly denied that any such deal ever took place, and insists that Israel must freeze all construction in Judea-Samaria if talks are to continue beyond the end of April. It is worth noting, however, that a "settlement freeze" was never stipulated as a precondition to the current talks.Diskin stressed that he is "firmly against releasing terrorists under pressure or under extortion of any kind of terror attack for the purpose of bargaining, even at the cost of failing to free a kidnapped soldier or citizen" and noted that he is "saying this as a father to three children who are serving simultaneously in IDF combat units." "I believe that even if this decision is completely legal as far as the government is concerned, such a release under pressure impairs the State of Israel's deterrence ability, conveys weakness, encourages additional acts of terror for the purpose of bargaining, re-strengthens the terror infrastructures and seriously hurts the feelings of the terror victims' families and broad parts of the Israeli public," he continued.

"On the other hand, I do believe that in special cases a government can make a decision to release terrorists – at its own initiative – in order to advance a peace process, but not under extortion or pressure from a terror organization or a different country." "In light of its high public sensitivity, such a move should be postponed as much as possible to the latest stages of the negotiations when there have already been significant achievements or progress and when it can be explained to the public and to the families of terror victims." Turning to calls for the government to "balance-out" any release of Arab terrorists by releasing the handful of Jewish terrorists currently in Israeli jails, Diskin said the two cases cannot be compared."I also find serious fault in the idea to bind the release of Palestinian terrorists with the release of Jewish terrorists. I see no justification for terror attacks committed by Jewish citizens of the State of Israel, a country which has a strong army, a security agency, a secret service and a police," he declared. "When the state's citizens take the law into their hands and use terror against innocent people, they are committing a serious and dangerous act like no other, and should be treated with extra severity." "A merciful attitude towards such cases, as we have already seen in the State of Israel in the 'Jewish Underground' case, is wrong, and could encourage a repeat of this outline and undermines our moral justification for seriously punishing those involved in terror on the Palestinian side," he continued. "And so, political deals which bind the release of Jewish terrorists in order to 'sweeten the bitter pill' of releasing Palestinian terrorists are fundamentally wrong in my opinion." Diskin concluded the article by saying that a freeze would continue talks with the PA while also breaking "a situation of an ongoing act of terror for the purpose of bargaining, without any real return in the form of peace," in his words. To him, the move would save both sides from admitting that "talks are a failure" and the Israeli public from confusion over the releases, which he notes "have lacked any diplomatic benefit so far."

Kerry Makes Sudden Unannounced Israel Visit in Bid to Save Talks-In an attempt to salvage failing peace talks, Kerry makes another visit to Israel to meet with Netanyahu, Abbas.-By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 3/31/2014, 2:32 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

US Secretary of State John Kerry will be making another visit to Israel on Monday, in yet another attempt to save the failing peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA).The sudden visit was revealed to AFP by State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki. Kerry was reportedly considering the visit while in Paris on Sunday, and later Sunday night called Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in what apparently was an effort to coordinate the last-minute visit."Our negotiating team has been working with both parties on the ground to help them agree on a path forward, and Secretary Kerry has kept in close touch with his counterparts by phone," Psaki noted. "After consulting with his team, Secretary Kerry decided it would be productive to return to the region."Psaki reported that Kerry will be in Israel on Monday and Tuesday, and aside from meeting Netanyahu in Jerusalem will likely meet PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah. Kerry interrupted a trip to Rome to meet with Abbas just last Wednesday, amid the failing talks."Over the course of the last eight months, the Israelis and Palestinians have both made tough choices, and as we work with them to determine the next steps, it is important they remember that only peace will bring the Israeli and Palestinian people both the security and economic prosperity they all.deserve," Psaki added. While in Paris on Sunday, Kerry told reporters that it was not yet appropriate for the US to make any public judgement about the peace talks "at this important moment.""It's really a question between the Palestinians and the Israelis, and what prime minister Netanyahu is prepared to do," Kerry stated. "We'll see where we are tomorrow when some judgments have to be made."The fourth and final batch of terrorist releases was refused by Israel on Saturday. Netanyahu reportedly told Kerry that if the release went through it risked toppling his government, given the widespread protest of the unpopular "gesture" to promote the peace talks. The PA has threatened that it will go to the UN this week in unilateral moves for international recognition, in violation of the peace talk conditions, if the terrorists were not released. It has yet to follow through on that threat.Abbas has brought the talks to a loggerhead by adamantly refusing to recognize Israel as the Jewish state. Kerry's visit apparently aims to deal with the massive difficulties faced on all fronts by the peace talks he initiated.

Israel hands Palestinians proposal to extend peace talks-US Secretary of State John Kerry speaks with Netanyahu from Paris in bid to salvage peace talks on the verge of collapse.-By AFP March 31, 2014, 6:08 am 13-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Israel on Sunday handed the Palestinians a proposal they hope will lead to an extension of their peace talks beyond an April 29 deadline, as efforts to salvage the negotiations came to a head. The fate of the US-brokered peace process could be decided within days, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier, warning that “either the matter will be resolved or it will blow up.”Netanyahu’s remarks to ministers from his rightwing Likud party came as US officials were working around the clock to prevent a collapse of the negotiations over a dispute about Palestinian prisoners.“In any case, there won’t be any deal without Israel knowing clearly what it will get in exchange,” Netanyahu said.According to a Palestinian official, Israel presented Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas with a draft agreement to relaunch talks. Abbas was to examine the proposal during the night, he said.An Israeli official would not provide details on the proposal but told AFP: “Now the Palestinians need to reply if they are willing to continue negotiations.”With the talks teetering on the brink of collapse, Washington, which pushed the sides to relaunch talks in July, has been fighting an uphill battle to coax them into accepting a framework proposal which would extend the negotiations beyond April 29.But the issue has become tied up with the fate of 26 veteran Palestinian prisoners who Israel was to have freed this weekend under the terms agreed to relaunch talks.Israel on Friday informed the Palestinians they would not free the prisoners, with the US State Department confirming it was working “intensively” to resolve the dispute.US officials said Secretary of State John Kerry, in Paris Sunday, spoke with Netanyahu. After those talks, Kerry told reporters in the French capital that it was not yet appropriate for the US to make any public judgement of the situation “at this important moment.”“It’s really a question between the Palestinians and the Israelis, and what prime minister Netanyahu is prepared to do,” he added.“We’ll see where we are tomorrow when some judgments have to be made.”Israel’s Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said “this is a critical week for the Israeli-Palestinian issue” noting Kerry’s “efforts” and the “commitment and contribution of President (Barack) Obama towards this endeavor.”Ya’alon, who made the remarks during a meeting with chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff General Martin Dempsey, had recently criticized Washington’s foreign policy and reportedly called Kerry’s peacemaking efforts “obsessive” and “messianic.”The Palestinians say they will not even consider extending the talks without the prisoners being freed, but Israel has refused to release them without a Palestinian commitment to continue the talks, prompting a fresh crisis of confidence.“We agreed to the fourth batch,” Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz told reporters on Sunday, while stressing it would not happen as long as Abbas was preparing to “blow up the negotiations” the very next day.President Shimon Peres, from a visit to Austria, said the sides were “working around the clock in an effort to reach a breakthrough in the talks.”“I hope that in the coming days there will be positive developments in the negotiations,” he said.

‘Ball in Israel court’

“The ball is now in Israel’s court,” Palestinian prisoners minister Issa Qaraqaa told Voice of Palestine radio, saying the leadership was expecting an answer from the Israeli government within 24 hours.Aside from the release of the 26 veteran detainees, Abbas reportedly wants an Israeli commitment to free more prisoners as one of his conditions for agreeing to extend the talks. An Israeli official told AFP on Saturday that Israel was willing to free the prisoners but the Palestinians were “creating difficulties.”Under the deal that relaunched peace talks, Israel agreed to release 104 prisoners held since before the 1993 Oslo peace accords in exchange for the Palestinians freezing all efforts to seek further international recognition. So far, Israel has freed 78 of them in three batches, and the last group — which the Palestinians insist includes 14 Arab Israelis jailed for terrorist attacks — was to have been released on March 29.

Abbas demanded release of Palestinian leaders’-PA president told Obama that negotiations will not continue without mass prisoner release, settlement moratorium, official says-By Elhanan Miller March 31, 2014, 3:23 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas presented to US President Barack Obama two conditions for extending the deadline for negotiations with Israel: a complete settlement freeze, and the release of some 600 prisoners based on a set of Palestinian-determined criteria, a Palestinian official told The Times of Israel on Monday.Kadoura Fares, a former Palestinian minister and current head of the Palestinian Prisoners Club, a nongovernmental organization dealing with prisoners’ rights, said that during his meeting with Obama in the US on March 17, Abbas demanded the release of three Palestinian leaders sentenced to long prison terms by Israel during the Second Intifada for their involvement in terror activities, in addition to a complete moratorium on settlement construction. The three leaders are Fatah official Marwan Barghouti, convicted of five counts of murder in 2004; Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine Secretary General Ahmad Saadat, sentenced by a military court in 2008 for his involvement in the assassination of Israeli tourism minister Rehavam Ze’evi; and Fouad Shoubaki, a close associate of Yasser Arafat, sentenced in 2009 to 20 years in prison for his involvement in organizing the smuggling of arms into the Palestinian territories in 2002 aboard the ship Karine A.In addition, Abbas demanded the release of severely ill prisoners, estimated by Fares to number 100-120; 19 women; children under the age of 18; and prisoners held by Israel in administrative detention. Fares estimated the total number of prisoners falling into those categories at 600.He expected that the only group of prisoners to upset Israeli public opinion would be the three leaders.“If Israel wants to place hurdles, it will focus on Ahmad Saadat and Marwan Barghouti. It will whine that they are so dangerous, which is of course not true,” Fares said.“As for the others: The sick prisoners will be transferred directly from prison to hospitals — we’re talking about chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, paralysis or severe psychiatric issues; the women — none of them did anything that can cause a problem in Israeli public opinion, only trivial things; the children [were arrested] for stone throwing; and the administrative detainees were never indicted, and include 11 elected members of the Legislative Council,” he said. The Palestinian leadership will “under no circumstances” agree to forgo the release of 14 Israeli Arabs expected to be included in the final phase of prisoner release this week, Fares added.“The Israeli prisoners are an integral part [of the deal], and it’s a matter of life and death. No one has the legitimacy to give them up,” he said. The Times of Israel reported on Saturday that Israel offered to release 400 prisoners in exchange for a Palestinian agreement to extend negotiations until the end of the year.Responding to the report, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the prisoner issue will be resolved “within days,” but insisted that Israel would free no more prisoners unless it knows exactly what it will get in return. The release of Israeli Arab prisoners would require a special Israeli government vote, which has so far not been scheduled.“We must stop the old and miserable Israeli habit of treating the [Palestinian] prisoners as numbers, as a herd,” Fares said on Monday. “We should not cite numbers at all, but focus on criteria. The Palestinian leadership should be party to setting the criteria; it’s not an exclusive matter for Israel to deal with, or a domestic Israeli issue.”On Monday evening, Abbas is scheduled to meet with the PLO’s Executive Committee, an 18-member body comprising the movement’s senior leadership. Fares said Abbas would update the leadership on the situation and reach operative decisions.“If we remain stuck, I don’t think Abu Mazen (Abbas) and the leadership will agree for things to remain stuck for long. We must proceed to real negotiations, not for negotiations to serve as cover while Israel continues building settlements.”

PA: Talks can go on if Israel frees 1,000 prisoners-Abbas also demands settlement freeze and transfer of some Area C regions to the Palestinian control-By Avi Issacharoff March 30, 2014, 4:09 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The Palestinian leadership presented an offer to American mediators – that Israel release 1,000 more prisoners, of the Palestinian Authority’s choosing and in exchange, peace talks would be extended until the end of 2014. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas also demanded that Israel freeze settlement construction and transfer some Area C regions to the Palestinian Authority’s control. The Palestinian Authority was holding intensive talks Sunday to discuss the matter further. On Saturday, The Times of Israel learned from a Palestinian source that Jerusalem, backed by Washington, offered to release 400 more prisoners of Israel’s choosing, in addition to a fourth and final group of longtime terrorism convicts who were set to go free this weekend – on the condition that the Palestinian Authority agrees to prolong the ongoing negotiations beyond the April 29 deadline.Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat, who has resigned several times since peace talks started up again in July under US mediation, said Sunday that he was still holding talks with Jerusalem and Washington, far from the public eye.On the prisoner release that was meant to take place Saturday, Erekat said it might still be carried out, as Israel was obligated to release inmates imprisoned before the Oslo Accords.Erekat stressed that Abbas was making every effort to secure the prisoners’ release independent of any agreement to extend the talks. In return, the Palestinians would continue to abide by their obligation to refrain from applying to UN and other international bodies for the duration of the talks. On Saturday, some sources claimed Israel was holding off on freeing the prisoners because of rumors that the PA would back out of peace talks once the fourth group of convicts was released. Israel has also balked at releasing Israeli Arabs. As of Saturday evening, however, Abbas was insisting that the prisoners be released before he would consider extending the talks beyond their current deadline.Saturday’s offer had stipulated that Israel would determine which additional 400 security prisoners would go free, Palestinian sources said.Israel is said to be holding close to 5,000 Palestinian security prisoners.Jewish Home’s Uri Ariel, the minister of housing and construction, was said to be ready to recommend that his right-wing party leave the coalition if the release of the extra prisoners goes through. Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz, a member of Netanyahu’s own Likud party, told Israel Radio Saturday night that he was against the release of all further prisoners, and that moves to free them should be stopped immediately, particularly “since there hasn’t been any forward movement in the peace process.”The Minister of Prisoners in the PA, Issa Karake, on Saturday night urged Abbas to leave the negotiations and instead take the cause of Palestinian statehood to the UN and other international organizations if Israel does not release the fourth group of prisoners within the next few days.State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Saturday night, “In regard to reports this evening on an agreement on the release of prisoners, no deal has been arrived at, and we continue to work intensively with both sides. Any claims to the contrary are inaccurate.”Meanwhile, US Special Envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations Martin Indyk met with Erekat and Israel’s envoy to the peace talks, Yitzhak Molcho, in Jerusalem Saturday night. Erekat was quoted by Army Radio saying he believed the deadlock would be broken and the fourth group of prisoners would go free early in the coming week.Earlier Saturday, it was reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told US Secretary of State John Kerry that he feared his coalition could fall apart if Israel frees the fourth batch of Palestinian prisoners who were slated for release this weekend — among them 14 Israeli Arabs.Citing sources in the Palestinian Authority, the London-based pan-Arab al-Hayat newspaper reported that US negotiators had told Abbas Netanyahu feared his coalition, which includes the right-wing Jewish Home and Yisrael Beytenu parties, might disintegrate over the prisoner release.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-5
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous (DANGEROUS) times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

03/28/2014 - VATICAN INSIDER -Obama's attempt to kiss and make up with US Catholics-The political and religious consequences of Obama’s meeting with the Pope-Paolo Mastrolilli

Rome-Obama’s visit to the Pope showed Catholic voters that the Church is not an extension of the Republican Party. Journalist Michael Sean Winters’s comment is pretty frank but sums up well the key elements of yesterday’s papal audience with US President Barack Obama. It is true that the President had ethical and spiritual reasons for wanting to meet the Pope and seemed genuinely amazed when he defined Francis as someone who is able to inspire people and get them to focus on the world’s problems. In answer to a question about whether he was considering forming an alliance with Francis, the President laughed saying: “I don’t think His Holiness envisions entering into a partnership or a coalition with any political figure on any issue. His job is a little more elevated,” he added. “We are down on the ground dealing with the often profane. He’s pretty much with higher powers.”But Obama’s practical solutions must also have the consensus of voters and he has clashed with the Catholic hierarchy over some of these. In an interview given a few days ago, Cardinal Burke dubbed Obama’s policies “anti-Christian” and Archbishop Chaput accused the University of Notre Dame of prostituting itself because it invited President Obama to visit it. During the 2012 presidential elections, many bishops did not hide their opposition to the prospect of Obama’s re-election. These kinds of sentiments could have a negative impact for Democrats in November’s mid-term elections. Catholics are divided: about 45% are Republicans, 45% Democrats and the rest are undecided; their fluctuations could influence election results in decisive States like Ohio and Pennsylvania. It is social issues, namely abortion, contraception and same-sex marriage that lie at the centre of misunderstandings between the President and the Catholic hierarchy. The President’s meeting with Francis, who has invited the Church not to focus all its attention just on these topics, helped show that it is ok not to agree on every single point, but it is important to discuss and collaborate on common issues such as the fight against poverty. Will some bishops now say that the Pope prostituted himself because he received the President in audience? Winters asks. Obama said social issues hardly came up during their discussions. It was the Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and the statement issued by the Holy See that brought them up. The Vatican underlined both the differences but also the points the two parties had in common, such as immigration for example. This willingness to engage in dialogue is an important step forward that will help Obama in his relations with Catholics.

ISAIAH 24:1-23
1 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.
2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.
3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word.
4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.

Churches to honor victims as Washington state mudslide death toll climbs-By Jonathan Kaminsky and Bryan Cohen 5 hours ago-MAR 30,14-Yahoonews

ARLINGTON, Washington (Reuters) - Churches planned services on Sunday to offer prayers for the victims of last week's devastating mudslide in Washington state as the death toll from the disaster kept rising but the number of missing fell sharply. The presumed body count rose to 28 on Saturday from the March 22 catastrophe northeast of Seattle, with the official tally of those killed now 18 based on bodies extricated and identified by medical examiners. But despite the grim toll, news also came that the number of missing fell to 30 from 90 as officials were able to account for dozens of people as "safe and well."Rescue and recovery workers pushed through wind and rain on Saturday to comb through debris a week after a rain-soaked hillside above the north fork of the Stillaguamish River gave way without warning and sent a wall of mud cascading over dozens of homes near the rural Washington town of Oso.Churches will lead prayers on Sunday for victims and their families as well as rescue workers who have been searching through a debris field that covers a square mile (2.6 square km).Gordy Beil, a 63-year-old photographer and painter in Darrington, about 10 miles from Oso, said he anticipated a painful service at the Episcopal church he plans to attend on Sunday morning."It will be good for people to go and get what they need to get out of it," he said.Don Little, 66, a Redmond, Washington, resident in town to visit his son, said he would attend the Church of God of Prophecy in Darrington, where one of the congregants has a husband among the missing and is having a hard time grasping that he is gone. Those at the service will be praying both for the miracle of his safety and for the woman's coming to accept her loss with a measure of peace, Little said."She's still hoping beyond hope that they find him alive, and everybody's wishing for that," he said. "Sometimes we don't get what we really want but we've got to learn to accept things."

FUNERALS PLANNED

Funeral preparations are also beginning for those lost in the tragedy. At the Weller Funeral Home in the town of Arlington, only a few miles from the site of the mudslide, staff members who typically plan two to three funerals weekly are preparing for 12 this week."Some people who have come here, they've only found one family member, and they're now searching for the fourth or fifth or sixth member of the family," said Diane Wilson-simon, who helps families plan services at the funeral home.No one has been pulled alive from the rubble since the day the landslide hit, when at least eight people were injured but survived. Rescuers have found no signs of life since then.Ron Brown, a Snohomish County official involved in search-and-rescue operations, said the debris field may end up being the final resting place for some victims, who may be buried so thoroughly they cannot be found."That's going to be hallowed ground out there," he said.In addition to prayers, many are offering donations of money, food, clothing and other items. At the Weller Funeral Home, Wilson-simon said she had been overwhelmed by the generosity of people who had donated to help pay for victims' funerals."It's just overwhelming to see so much loss of life, but heartwarming to see so much outpouring of community support," she said."(Reporting by Jonathan Kaminsky in Darrington, Wash., and Bryan Cohen in Arlington, Washington; Writing by Carey Gillam; Editing by Peter Cooney)
