STORMS HURRICANES-TORNADOES

LUKE 21:25-26
25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;(MASS CONFUSION) the sea and the waves roaring;(FIERCE WINDS)
26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear,(TORNADOES,HURRICANES,STORMS) and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth:(DESTRUCTION) for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.(FROM QUAKES,NUKES ETC)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Potentially damaging winds forecast for B.C.'s South Coast

Environment Canada has issued a warning for potentially damaging winds for most of B.C.'s South Coast as a Pacific storm front moves in Saturday.Meteorologists are predicting initially strong winds from the southeast between 70 to 100 km/h Saturday afternoon shifting to westerly gale force winds of 60 to 80 km/hour Saturday night, slowing to 30 km/h after midnight.Storms of this nature can cause power outages as well as ferry and flight delays.Hardest hit will be the west coast of Vancouver Island and the Victoria area. On the the Lower Mainland, western sections including Richmond, Tsawwassen and White Rock  will bear the brunt of the stormThe forecast also calls for rain, heavy at times.

4 school buses slide off the road due to icy roads

Icy road conditions created problems for a dozen school buses on Prince Edward Island Friday morning.
Four school buses slid off the road. Three in western P.E.I. slid onto the shoulder and got stuck in the slush. One in North Tryon slipped slightly into the ditch. The English Language School Board has not yet determined how many of those four buses had children on board at the time. There were no injuries.
The school board confirmed a total of 12 buses "required assistance" on Friday morning's slippery roads.
At least two towing companies were called in to help move school buses. The school board said it made the decision to proceed with school as usual at 6 a.m. At that time, said Dave Gillis, the board's leader of corporate services, conditions were good."At about 7ish or so we had some heavy rains start to fall which weren't part of the forecast as they were outlined and what that did is it washed a lot of the salt and sand off of the roads," said Gillis."It takes about an hour, an hour and a half to get the system going or shut the system down, so after 6:30ish we were beyond the point of being able to put the brakes on."RCMP warned about icy roads at about 8:20 a.m. By that time school bus drivers had been advised by radio that conditions had deteriorated and they should proceed with caution. The Morell family of schools reported buses were running slowly and behind schedule. The English Language School Board was slow to comment on the incidents when called by CBC News, not being able to provide details until about 11:30 a.m.The French Language School Board reports there were no incidents with any of its buses.

Two killed as storm batters Britain

AFP
London (AFP) - Two people were killed overnight and thousands of homes were without power on Saturday as a new winter storm hammered Britain. After the wettest start to the year for 250 years, the Met Office national weather service said a "multi-pronged attack" of wind, rain and snow was sweeping the country. In central London, police said a woman died and a man was taken to hospital after a building collapsed onto their car in Holborn, not far from the West End theatre district.Out on the English Channel, high winds sent a "freak wave" smashing through a window of a cruise ship causing the death of an 85-year-old man, the ship's operator said.Several of the Marco Polo's 735 mainly British passengers were injured and two were airlifted off the ship, including the elderly man who later died, according to Cruise & Maritime Voyages. And in Scotland, two hikers went missing on Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain, after they became "disorientated" in the poor weather, police said. The storm made landfall in southwest England with winds of nearly 80 mph (128 kph) and was expected to bring with it up to 40 mm (1.6 ins) of rain.
The Met Office warned of more huge waves and a tidal surge on the south coast of England, where earlier storms wiped out a railway line and damaged historic cliff features.About 17,000 people remained without power in Wales following an earlier storm on Wednesday when hurricane-force gales left one person dead.
Prime Minister David Cameron reiterated his promise on Friday to do "whatever it takes" to help stricken communities, following criticism of the government's initial response to the flooding crisis. He has said money was "no object", offering financial support for businesses and homeowners."These are extraordinary weather events, but we are fighting on every front to help people," he said.More than 2,000 army, navy and air force personnel have now been deployed across Britain to help flood-hit communities, and 70 percent of England's fire and rescue services are working on the flood and storm effort.Tornado attack jets and Sentinel surveillance planes have flown missions over deluged areas, using optical and radar imaging to help civilian authorities coordinate their response, the Ministry of Defence said.- Dutch government sends pumps -
A total of 22 severe flood alerts indicating a risk to life are in place, mostly in the southeast of England.More than 5,800 properties have been flooded since early December while huge swathes of farmland have been inundated. And communities along the swollen River Thames were braced for more damage after it was expected to reach its highest level in 60 years over the weekend. In the village of Datchet on Friday, second-in-line to the throne Prince William and his younger brother Harry donned Wellington boots and waterproofs as they lugged sandbags alongside members of the Household Cavalry."The Duke (of Cambridge) and Prince Harry wanted to show their support to the flood victims and thought the most appropriate way of doing that was through the armed forces relief effort," a Kensington Palace spokeswoman told AFP.
Buckingham Palace meanwhile said the queen was helping farmers in the southwestern county of Somerset -- parts of which have been underwater for nearly two months -- by contributing feed and bedding from the royal farms at Windsor. Not everyone was pitching in, however. Police said some residents in Portsmouth, on the south coast, received hoax calls on Friday urging them to evacuate because of impending flooding -- presumably from would-be burglars.Cameron has said he will seek financial aid from the European Union to cope with the floods, despite his promises to renegotiate London's relationship with Brussels and hold an in-out referendum.Britain has already borrowed eight "very high volume pumps" from the Dutch government and several Dutch engineers are helping in Somerset, a spokeswoman for the environment ministry said.
Bank of England governor Mark Carney warned Britain's fragile recovery from recession would be affected as the bad weather hits farming and transport.

Battered, beleaguered: Storm socks East Coast

Associated Press
Heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain bombarded the East Coast on Thursday and the Southeast continued to grapple with the aftermath of another unusual winter storm that covered the region in ice. In some places, the winter assault eased up during the day, but another wave was expected overnight into Friday. "It's like a dog chasing its tail all day," said Pat O'Pake, a plow operator in Pennsylvania. Here's a sampling of what the latest round of winter weather brought:
___
SNOW AND MORE SNOW: The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings from North Carolina to Maine on Thursday and predicted another round of wintry weather would torment the Northeast into Friday. Philadelphia got nearly 9 inches of snow, its fourth 6-inch snowstorm of the season — the first time that has happened in the city since record-keeping began in the late 1800s. New York City received nearly 10 inches, and a big swath of New Jersey had about a foot of snow by midday Thursday. Rockaway, N.J., had 14 inches.Washington had at least 8 inches of snow; Baltimore awoke Thursday to 15 inches. Parts of northern Georgia had over 9 inches by late Thursday morning, while North Carolina ranged from 6 inches in cities to up to 15 inches in mountainous areas. In Virginia, Blacksburg and Salem contended with 2 feet of snow, and the Virginia-West Virginia state line got more than a foot.
___
IN THE DARK: About 1.2 million homes and businesses lost power as the storm moved from the South through the Northeast. By Thursday evening, about 550,000 customers remained in the dark, mostly in South Carolina and Georgia.
___
TREACHEROUS TRAVEL: More than 6,500 flights were canceled across the country, according to the website FlightAware. In Washington, D.C., the two main airports were closed. Amtrak canceled some of its trains in the Northeast and the South and modified schedules for others. In the Northeast, Interstate 84 in New York state between the Connecticut and Pennsylvania lines was closed to commercial traffic; tandem tractor-trailer trucks were banned from highways in Connecticut. Municipalities imposed parking and travel restrictions so roadways and streets would be clear for plowing. Speed limits were lowered on some highways. At least 21 deaths, most of them in traffic accidents, were blamed on the storm as it made its way across the South and up the coast. A pregnant woman in New York City was struck by a snow plow and killed. Her baby was delivered by cesarean section.
___
NOT SO LOVABLE: The latest round of dangerous weather threatened to disrupt deliveries of Valentine's Day flowers on Friday. "It's a godawful thing," said Mike Flood, owner of Falls Church Florist in Virginia. "We're going to lose money. There's no doubt about it." Frank Campisi of Fallon's Flowers in Raleigh, N.C., said he's had to move deliveries from Friday to Saturday and, in some cases, to Monday. "We're trying to do as much as we can, which doesn't amount to a whole lot," he said.
___
UPSIDE-DOWN WEATHER: While Northeast residents suffered through bitter cold yet again, temperatures reached into the mid-60s on Thursday at the Winter Games in Sochi. Russian officials say they have not needed to tap into their snow reserves on the mountain yet and all events are taking place on schedule.
___
WINTER CANCELS WINTER: A celebration of winter tourism in the Olympic village of Lake Placid, N.Y., was postponed ahead of the storm. Plans had called for visitors to take part in skiing, bobsledding and other winter sports at the sites that hosted the 1980 and 1932 Winter Olympics. A new date has not been chosen.

After months of cold, Great Lakes become nearly covered with ice for the first time since 1994

CHEBOYGAN, Mich. - From the bridge of the Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw, northern Lake Huron looks like a vast, snow-covered field dotted with ice slabs as big as boulders — a battleground for the icebreaker's 58-member crew during one of the roughest winters in memory. It's been so bitterly cold for so long in the Upper Midwest that the Great Lakes are almost completely covered with ice. The last time they came this close was in 1994, when 94 per cent of the lakes' surface was frozen. As of Friday, ice cover extended across 88 per cent, according to the federal government's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor.Sections of the lakes, which hold nearly one-fifth of the freshwater on the world's surface, harden almost every winter. That freezing keeps the Coast Guard's fleet of nine icebreakers busy clearing paths for vessels hauling essential cargo such as heating oil, salt and coal. But over the past four decades, the average ice cover has receded 70 per cent, scientists say, probably in part because of climate change.
Still, as this season shows, short-term weather patterns can trump multi-year trends. Winter arrived early and with a vengeance and refuses to loosen its grip."That arctic vortex came down, and the ice just kept going," said George Leshkevich, a physical scientist with the federal lab.The deep freeze is more than a novelty. By limiting evaporation, it may help replenish lake water levels — a process that began last year after a record-breaking slump dating to the late 1990s. Also getting relief are cities along the lakes that have been pummeled with lake-effect snow, which happens when cold air masses suck up moisture from open waters and dump it over land.Buffalo, N.Y, got nearly 43 inches of snow in January, but this month just 13 inches have fallen, a decline resulting largely from the freeze-over of Lake Erie even though Lake Ontario has remained largely open, said forecaster Jon Hitchcock of the National Weather Service.Heavy ice can also protect fish eggs from predators, and it has delighted photographers, ice anglers and daredevil snowmobilers.
At Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin, the rock-solid cover has allowed around 35,000 visitors to trudge miles over Lake Superior to explore caves featuring dazzling ice formations. It's the first time in five years the lake surface has been firm enough to allow passage. With no letup in the cold, the ice hasn't experienced the usual thaw-and-freeze cycle, so nature's artistry is even more delicate and beautiful, with needle-like hoarfrost crystals sprinkled across sheets that dangle from cave ceilings like giant chandeliers."Seeing them like this is almost a once-in-a-lifetime experience," Superintendent Bob Krumenaker said. There's even an (apparently) tongue-in-cheek Facebook page inviting people to join a convoy of snowmobiles, cars and other vehicles on a nearly 80-mile trek across Lake Michigan. Never mind that its waters remain partly open and experts warn the ice can be dangerously unstable."If it freezes, and you miss this chance, when will it happen again?" the page says. "Feel free to invite more folks!"For Coast Guard icebreaker teams, it's all business. They've logged four times more hours this season than the average for the same period in recent years, said Kyle Niemi, spokesman for the agency's Cleveland district headquarters. The 240-foot-long Mackinaw began its duties Dec. 16 — several weeks earlier than usual — and worked nonstop until Feb. 8, when traffic slowed enough to allow a break."As you can imagine, the crew's tired," Cmdr. Michael Davanzo said this week during a tour of the ship in its home port of Cheboygan.A 35-year Coast Guard veteran who has spent 12 years on the lakes, Davanzo said this winter is the toughest he's experienced because the ice came so soon and is so thick and widespread, and the weather has been constantly bitter. The Mackinaw, commissioned in 2006 to replace an older vessel with the same name, is designed specifically for duty on the Great Lakes. It's propelled by two "Azipod" thrusters that can spin 360 degrees and fire jets of water at adjacent ice, weakening it. Sometimes the crew will drive the ship's bow onto an ice sheet to crack it with sheer weight. Or they'll go backward, chopping up ice with the propeller blades. When the going gets tough, there's the battering-ram option — hurling the reinforced hull directly against walls of ice that can be several feet thick. The workload typically drops sharply after navigational locks on the St. Marys River, the link between Lakes Superior and Huron, close in mid-January and most large cargo haulers dock for winter. But the ice was so thick this year that a number of freighters were still struggling to complete final deliveries days later. Even now, demand for road salt and heating oil in the Midwest is keeping some icebreakers busy. One day last month, the Mackinaw spent 16 grueling hours helping a freighter squeeze through a narrow 3.5-mile section of the St. Marys. As the Mackinaw attacks the ice, the engines roar and the ship vibrates. The noise and motion are "like living in an earthquake 16 hours a day," Petty Officer 3rd Class Ryan Alderman said.Davanzo hopes for rain and warmer temperatures that would melt some ice before the locks reopen in late March, when the Mackinaw will venture onto Lake Superior and clear paths for iron ore and coal haulers."But if the weather stays like this," he said, "we could be breaking ice all the way to the middle of May."Despite the inconvenience, there's a silver lining for shippers. Since the low-water period began in late 1990s, they've been forced to carry lighter loads to avoid scraping bottom in shallow channels and harbours. Heavy snow and rain in 2013 finally raised water levels.
Ice cover blocks evaporation, the leading cause of low water. It also will keep the lakes cooler for a longer time this year, delaying the onset of heavy evaporation season, scientist John Lenters reported in a paper last month, although the benefit is partially offset by stepped-up evaporation shortly before the ice forms.
In Lake Superior, snowbound Isle Royale National Park is home to a dwindling and inbred wolf population that is usually trapped on the island. Biologists hope a newcomer or two will venture to the park now that the lake is almost entirely frozen over. The park's first wolves are believed to have crossed an ice bridge from Canada, 15 miles away, in the late 1940s.There's also a chance that one or more of the island's wolves could grab the rare opportunity to escape."They are inveterate travellers," veteran wolf expert Rolf Peterson said. "And they don't need a reason that would make sense to us."____Follow John Flesher on Twitter at http://twitter.com/JohnFlesher

Obama: Entire U.S. concerned about Calif. drought

Associated Press
No longer can the U.S. afford to think about water as a competition between the nation's agricultural and urban areas, Obama said. With overall water resources expected to diminish significantly in the future, he said, the country must find better ways to cooperate."The truth of the matter is that this is going to be a very challenging situation this year, and frankly, the trend lines are such where it's going to be a challenging situation for some time to come," Obama said while meeting with community leaders in Firebaugh, a rural area not far from Fresno.California is in the midst of its worst drought in more than 100 years. After arriving here Friday afternoon, Obama was to meet with area farmers and announce more than $160 million in federal financial aid, including $100 million in the farm bill he signed into law last week for programs that cover the loss of livestock. The overall package includes smaller amounts to aid in the most extreme drought areas and to help food banks that serve families affected by the water shortage. Obama also will call on federal facilities in California to immediately limit water consumption. The president also was announcing that the budget he'll send to Congress next month will include $1 billion for a proposed "climate resilience fund" to invest in research and pay for new technologies to help communities deal with the impact of climate change. The proposal is likely to face stiff resistance from lawmakers wary of new spending and divided on the subject of global warming.Obama drew a connection between the water issues California is facing and the broader impact he said climate change is having around the country, pointing to hurricanes along the Atlantic and coastal erosion. He said the entire nation is concerned about the drought because of California's enormous economic output."We are going to stay on top of this because it has national implications," Obama said.Later Friday, Obama was meeting Jordan's King Abdullah II at Sunnylands for talks covering the Mideast peace process, Syria and other issues. It's unusual for Obama to host world leaders outside of the White House, though he did hold a two-day summit at Sunnylands last year with Chinese President Xi Jinping.Obama's meetings with Abdullah will be much shorter — just a brief meeting Friday night, followed by a working dinner. The White House wouldn't say why the meeting was taking place in California, particularly given that Abdullah spent much of the past week in Washington and met with Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and others."The king is also going out to California. The president and the king can meet there and will meet there as part of this trip," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.Obama was expected to spend Presidents Day weekend on the golf course at Sunnylands. He's traveling without first lady Michelle Obama. The White House has been closely watching the California drought, which follows a year of the lowest rainfall on record. The drought has also brought to a head political warfare over the state's water resources that feed major cities, the country's richest agricultural region and waterways that provide habitat for endangered species of fish.
Gov. Jerry Brown declared a drought emergency on Jan. 17. Obama telephoned him several days later for an update on the situation.Farmers recently learned they will not be receiving irrigation water from the State Water Project, a system of rivers, canals and reservoirs. They anticipate a similar announcement later this month from federal authorities who operate a similar system called the Central Valley Project.Federal officials, including Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, earlier this month pledged $34 million to help farmers and ranchers conserve scarce water supplies, improve irrigation methods, head off erosion of unplanted fields and create better ways to water livestock. The Republican-controlled House recently voted to address the drought by rolling back environmental protections and temporarily halting the restoration of a dried-up stretch of the San Joaquin River, work that is designed to restore historic salmon runs. Farmers would prefer to have the water diverted to their crops instead.Boehner recently showed his support for the bill by visiting a dusty field in Bakersfield and saying fish shouldn't be favored over people.Environmentalists and Democrats oppose the bill, and the White House has threatened a veto, arguing that the measure would not alleviate the drought but would undo decades of work to address California's longstanding water shortages. In response, California's senators, Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, joined fellow Democrats in proposing legislation that would pour $300 million into emergency aid and drought relief projects, upgrade city water systems and water conservation and speed up environmental reviews of water projects, among other steps.___

First suspected case of pig virus reported at Prince Edward Island pork farm

CHARLOTTETOWN - A national agency is reporting the first suspected case of a deadly pig virus in Prince Edward Island. The Canadian Swine Health Intelligence Network issued a bulletin on Thursday that says a case of suspected porcine epidemic diarrhea virus was detected by a veterinary lab on the Island overnight Wednesday. The agency — which distributes information to the industry and government departments — says in a memo the regional test has been sent to the National Centre of Foreign Animal Disease in Winnipeg for confirmation. The email says investigations have already started in P.E.I. to find out how the virus arrived on the farm, as it "initially appears there is no direct link with other cases in Canada."
The intelligence network says Ontario was the first province to report a case of PED on Jan. 22, and as of Friday had 13 confirmed cases.Manitoba also reported a case Thursday night. The disease poses no risk to human health or safety. However, the virus is highly contagious and it has already killed millions of piglets in the United States.Chris Byra, manager of the swine intelligence network, said in an interview the confirmation by the federal lab in Winnipeg is likely to come swiftly. He also said in an interview that the pigs on the infected farm will likely be slaughtered at an abattoir and then the slaughterhouse will be disinfected.Byra said the infection spreads through manure that pigs swallow as they're feeding. In Ontario and Manitoba systems have been created to isolate the infected pigs at abattoirs and Byra said he expected Prince Edward Island would create a similar process.Byra said it's important to swiftly control the spread of the disease."We have a pretty good opportunity to eradicate it from our industry, but it's going to take some months and it's going to take some discipline among the producers," he said. The intelligence network doesn't release the name of the farm or its exact location.—By Michael Tutton in Halifax

2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

Three dead, 200,000 told to evacuate as Indonesia volcano

AFP
Blitar (Indonesia) (AFP) - A spectacular volcanic eruption in Indonesia has killed three people and forced mass evacuations, disrupting long-haul flights and closing international airports Friday.Mount Kelud, considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes on the main island of Java, spewed red-hot ash and rocks high into the air late Thursday night just hours after its alert status was raised.Villagers in eastern Java described the terror of volcanic materials raining down on their homes, while AFP correspondents at the scene saw residents covered in grey dust fleeing in cars and on motorbikes towards evacuation centres.
Sunar, a 60-year-old from a village eight kilometres (five miles) in Blitar district, said his home also collapsed after being hit with "rocks the size of fists"."The whole place was shaking -- it was like we were on a ship in high seas. We fled and could see lava in the distance flowing into a river," said Sunar, who goes by one name.
A man and a woman, both elderly, were crushed to death after volcanic material that had blanketed rooftops caused their homes in the sub-district of Malang to cave in, National Disaster Mitigation Agency Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said, while another elderly man died from inhaling the ash.Dian Julihadi, 32, from Blitar district, said: "It was like fireworks. There was a loud bang and bright red lights shot up into the air."
Nugroho confirmed the materials were still raining down on villages within a radius of 15 kilometres from the volcano on Friday, but said that some activities were resuming "as normal".Some 200,000 people were ordered to evacuate, though some families ignored the orders and others have returned home, with just over 75,000 now in temporary shelters, Nugroho said.Several men who had earlier tried to return home to gather clothing and valuables -were forced back by the continuous downpour of volcanic materials.
- 'Too dangerous to fly' -The ash has blanketed eastern Javanese cities forcing seven airports to close, including those in Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Solo, Semarang and Bandung, which serve international flights, officials said, while grounded planes were seen covered in the dust."All flights to those airports have been cancelled, and other flights, including some between Australia and Indonesia, have been rerouted," Transport Ministry director general of aviation Herry Bakti said, adding it was "too dangerous to fly" near the plume.
Virgin Australia said in a statement it had cancelled all its flights to and from Phuket, Bali, Christmas Island and Cocos Island on Friday, adding that "the safety of our customers is the highest priority" and that the airline would keep monitoring conditions.Australian nurse Susanne Webster, 38, was on a late-morning Virgin flight from Sydney to Bali that was turned around."About two hours in, the pilot announced over in Indonesia there was a volcano that erupted and that we were turning the plane back," she told AFP, adding they were still in Australian airspace at the time.Australian airline Qantas postponed Friday flights between Jakarta and Sydney to Saturday, while Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific cancelled and postponed flights to Surabaya, a popular destination for golfing tourists.Air Asia said 21 flights were affected in total, including three between Indonesian and Malaysia, adding several flights over Java were cancelled."The ashes could... compromise the safety and performance of the aircraft, such as (cause) permanent damage to the engine," Air Asia said in a statement, adding visibility was also a concern. On the outskirts of Yogyakarta, authorities closed Borobudur -- the world's largest Buddhist temple, which attracts hundreds of tourists daily -- after it was rained upon with dust from the volcano about 200 kilometres to the east.Hundreds of people at a temporary shelter in the village of Bladak, roughly 10 kilometres from the volcano's crater, began returning home slowly after spending the night on the floor wearing safety masks. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation said there was little chance of another eruption as powerful as Thursday night's, but tremors could still be felt Friday as communities began clearing piles of ash up to five centimetres high on roads. The 1,731-metre (5,712-foot) Mount Kelud has claimed more than 15,000 lives since 1500, including around 10,000 deaths in a massive eruption in 1568.It is one of 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a belt of seismic activity running around the basin of the Pacific Ocean.
Earlier this month another volcano, Mount Sinabung on western Sumatra island unleashed an enormous eruption that left at least 16 dead and has been erupting almost daily since September.

Pileup on icy Pennsylvania Turnpike injures dozens, snarls traffic much of the day

Jason Sickles, Yahoo
At least 30 motorists were injured on Friday morning in massive chain-reaction crashes on an icy Pennsylvania Turnpike outside Philadelphia, according to news reports.Traffic along the state's primary east-west highway was snarled for seven hours by a series of accidents involving multiple tractor-trailers and cars, but officials announced that all lanes had reopened by 4 p.m. The crashes resulted in some serious injuries, but no patients are believed to have suffered life-threatening wounds, hospital officials told The Associated Press.CBS Philly estimated the number of vehicles involved to be more than 100, including one particular pileup of 75 cars and big rigs.“The worst accident I have seen in the 20 years I have been doing this,” traffic reporter Bob Kelly told CBS Philly.Images from news helicopters and social media provided sobering views of the aftermath and close calls. The Philadelphia area saw about a foot of snow overnight. Transportation officials restricted freeway speeds during the storm, but those limits were reportedly lifted for the morning commute.Motorists told reporters the roadway was very slick when the accidents began occurring at about 8 a.m.“I got on the turnpike, and it was nothing but ice," David Hill told AP. "I was very surprised at the condition of it. Normally the turnpike is one of the first roads that's cleared, but today I was driving on solid ice.”

Deadly U.S. winter storm pounds Atlantic Canada

The monster winter storm that encased the U.S. Southeast in ice and dumped incredible amounts of snow over parts of the Eastern Seaboard is sweeping through eastern Canada today, spreading a wintry mix of weather from Ontario to Newfoundland and blasting powerful winds through the Maritime provinces.
This storm, named 'winter storm Pax' by forecasters in the United States, started its trek through eastern Canada on Thursday afternoon. Weather warnings issued by Environment Canada advised of heavy rain through Nova Scotia and a winter storm mix of rain, freezing rain, ice pellets and snow through New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, all driven by powerful wind gusts up to around 100 km/h. Snowfall amounts reached up to around 30 cm between Fredericton and Saint John before the rains moved in afterward. This same mix of wintry weather is pushing across Newfoundland today. Heavy snow, blowing snow and powerful wind gusts are expected to last throughout the day, with the snow switching over to freezing rain and then rain. Wind gusts are likely to reach up to 120 km/h, but will be even stronger — up to around 160 km/h — in the southwestern parts of the island. Schools and businesses are closed across the island today as residents hunker down until the storm passes.

To the west, the heaviest snowfall tracking up from the U.S. pushed into southern Quebec and eastern Ontario overnight. Several centimetres of snow are on the ground already this morning and forecasts are calling for up to 15 centimetres east of Montreal, around 30 cm along the St. Lawrence Valley and even up to 60 cm through Quebec's Gaspé Peninsula. The nearly 300-kilometre stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway from Quebec City to Edmundston, NB remains closed this morning after being shut down due to the storm conditions. Other highways that branch off from the Trans-Canada through the region have been closed as well. Several flights to and from airports in the region have either been delayed or cancelled entirely. Snowfall and winter storm warnings are cautioning residents that "these winter storm conditions could make travel impossible."

Following the path of its predecessor, Leon, Pax had already spread ice storm conditions throughout the southeastern states, before moving up the east coast to deliver around 50 to 70 centimetres of snow across most of the eastern and northeastern United States. Widespread power outages were reported due to ice bringing down power lines and tree branches through Georgia and the Carolinas. However, due to preparations before the storm arrived, cities like Atlanta were able to avoid a repeat of the chaos they endured with the last storm. Snowfall amounts were heaviest along a swath through western Virginia and Maryland, but cities like Washington and New York, along with parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania still saw between 20 and 30 cm fall by Friday morning. The storm is being blamed for up to 21 deaths throughout the eastern United States, and portions of the storm-affected areas, including parts of Georgia and South Carolina, have been declared federal disaster areas.(Photo courtesy: The Canadian Press) Geek out with the latest in science and weather.Follow @ygeekquinox on Twitter!

Spain’s doors always open to Jews, king says

As a bill to offer citizenship to Sephardic Jews awaits a parliamentary vote, 60 leaders of top Jewish-American organizations met with King Juan Carlos I at Zarzuela Palace on Thursday as part of a trip dedicated to strengthening ties between Spain, Israel, and the US.The meeting aims to “break down barriers of the past and build bridges for the future,” said Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. The delegation, coordinated by the Conference and headed by Hoenlein and Chairman Robert Sugarman, was received warmly by the king, who referenced historic Jewish contributions to science, philosophy, culture and arts in Spain. The representatives thanked the king for the proposed Spanish right of return that would facilitate requests for citizenship for the descendants of 1492 expellees.“Spain’s doors are open to you now and always,” the king said.News of the bill prompted a flurry of excited responses from the Sephardic Jewish community. Maya Weiss-Tamir, an attorney who handles citizenship requests in Israel, told Channel 2 she had received 150 applications since the bill approval announcement on February 8.“The motives vary,” she said. “There are those who are interested in citizenship for sentimental reasons; the connection to their Spanish roots and the symbolism in receiving Spanish citizenship. And there are those who are looking at the practical reasons — like the option to work and study in Europe.”However, some Orthodox Israeli rabbis, including Rabbi Eliyahu Abergel, a Sephardic rabbi, denounced it.“There is an ancient [rabbinic] ban against returning to Spain,” he said.Hundreds of thousands of Jews fled Spain and Portugal during the 15th and 16th centuries, when they were persecuted by the Catholic church and the royal houses of both countries.

Spanish King Meets Jewish Leaders Over New Law

February 14, 2014

King Juan Carlos I of Spain met with sixty leaders from the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations on Thursday, in the umbrella organization's first official visit to Spain. The visit comes after Spain announced citizenship for descendants of expelled Spanish Jews last Friday.During the meeting, which took place at Zarzuela Palace, the King extolled the contributions of Spain's Jewish community to Spain before it was expelled in 1492 by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabela, as part of the Spanish Inquisition's efforts to convert or expel Jews."Our history has been profoundly enriched with Spanish Jews' contributions to the arts and sciences, to commerce and philosophy. We are extremely proud of this legacy," remarked the Spanish monarch. The Conference of Presidents delegation praised the new Spanish legislation, granting citizenship for descendants of the community, as an "important recognition of the tragic events 500 years ago and the importance of educating this and future generations about it." The added their hopes that Spain will lead efforts against anti-Semitism and the threats of European boycotts on Israel.King Juan Carlos I said to the visiting Jewish leaders "Spain's doors are open to you now and always."The delegation also met with Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon in Madrid, who said "we had to tell ourselves and the world that what happened was not only a mistake, but also that historical mistakes can be repaired."The new bill allows Jews to apply for Spanish citizenship while retaining their existing citizenship. It will soon be finalized in a vote in Spain’s Congress of Deputies."I can assure you that the vast majority of Spaniards, no matter what their political stripes, whether they are in the government or in the opposition, agree with this assertion that we made a historic mistake five centuries ago and now we have the opportunity to repair it," Gallardon said. "So for this reason I am convinced that the draft law will receive the backing of the vast majority of parliament."
Genuine repentance or a ruse?
Spain has made some showing of repentance for its atrocious history of anti-Semitism. Last December, the Spanish Duke of Medina Sidonia presented a document of apology to the Jewish community of Gibraltar for the atrocities committed during the 1474-1476 expulsion of the Jewish community.Despite the signs of rapprochement, Rabbi Shlomo Aviner and other senior rabbis forbid Jews from taking Spanish citizenship in the new gesture, saying the move may be a political ruse to "make up for" the Inquisition and expulsion of Jews, which should not be forgiven."Spain needs support at the moment – it is in a very difficult financial situation," noted Rabbi Aviner on Monday. "Suddenly they are courting us and giving us [dual] citizenship. An Israeli passport is worth more."Rabbi Aviner added "I do not see evidence that over the ages they have done anything to really compensate for the expulsion. …If they really want to repent, they should at least stand by our side politically when we are attacked."

FALSE POPE FROM THE VATICAN

REVELATION 13:11-13
11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth;(FALSE VATICAN POPE) and he had two horns like a lamb,(JESUS IS THE LAMB OF GOD) and he spake as a dragon.(HES SATANICALLY INSPIRED,HES A CHRISTIAN DEFECTOR FROM THE FAITH)
12 And he (FALSE RELIGIOUS LEADER) exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him,(WORLD DICTATOR) and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.(THE WORLD DICTATOR CREATES A FALSE RESURRECTION AND IS CROWNED LEADER OF THE NEW WORLD ORDER).
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

REVELATION 17:1-5,9,15-18
1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication,(VATICAN IN POLITICS) and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4 And the woman (FALSE CHURCH) was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour,(VATICAN COLOURS)(ANOTHER REASON WE KNOW THE FALSE POPE COMES FROM THE VATICAN) and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.(THE VATICAN IS BUILT ON 7 HILLS OR MOUNTAINS)
15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.(VATICAN-CATHOLICS ALL AROUND THE WORLD OVER 1 BILLION)
16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast,(WORLD DICTATOR) these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.
17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

Pope Francis called on Jews and Christians to work together to construct a “more just and fraternal world,” and said he looked forward to his upcoming visit to Israel.Francis made his remarks during an audience at the Vatican on Thursday with a 50-member delegation of American Jewish Committee leaders. He called his visit to Israel, scheduled for May, a pilgrimage of “communion, hope and peace.”Francis praised the AJC for its work in promoting Jewish-Catholic dialogue. He noted that next year marks the 50th anniversary of the Nostra Aetate declaration, which launched the formal dialogue and, he said, “constitutes for the Church the sure point of reference for relations” between Catholics and Jews.”“It is important that we dedicate ourselves to new generations the heritage of our mutual knowledge, esteem and friendship which has, thanks to the commitment of associations like yours, grown over these years,” he told the group.AJC President Stanley Bergman called Francis a “true friend.” He said the pope’s visit to Israel in May is “eagerly anticipated, and we pray that it will be an inspiration to all in the region to reject the path of violence and pursue the path of peace.”

Hummes: “People’s faith in the Church has been restored”

Alver Metalli Buenos Aires He comforted him in the Sistine Chapel when “things got a bit dangerous”; he “advised” him on what name to take; he was at his side on the central Loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica on that all-important evening of 13 March. Francis’ decision to have him there with him on the balcony on his first public appearance after his election was the first of many gestures outside protocol which the new Pope would make. Dom Claudio Hummes has a great deal to tell, starting with Ratzinger’s resignation a month prior to this: “I don’t remember where I was that day but it really came as a real and unexpected surprise.”The former cardinal of São Paulo is calm and there is an intensity in his manner as he recalls the day of Benedict XVI’s resignation. “We were all a bit lost and a bit worried about how the future would turn out, especially as the Church was going through a difficult moment: “the de-Christianisation of the Western world, the drop in priest numbers, the crisis in religious life and the big scandals, the IOR, the Lefebvrians … Catholics were really down, sad, worried, they held their heads down. But you also try to look at this in the light of faith, trusting that Christ will lead the Church even through that really unusual moment.” Behind him is a picture that shows the eighty-year-old cardinal in the Sistine Chapel by Pope Francis’ side after he was elected Pope and dressed in his papal garb as the latter was going towards the Loggia of the Blessing.

Dom Claudio is a theologian so of course he knew it was possible for a Pope to resign, he knew Roman Canon Law allows it and he was aware of Ratzinger having mentioned it on a number of occasions . “But in practice it seemed impossible after 600 years.” “Benedict XVI’s resignation “was completely unexpected,” Hummes stressed. The reasons given for his resignation were unusual. “Only a Pope like Benedict XVI could have made a gesture of this kind, because it takes a very rational mind to do it, as well as great faith and a deeply holy life, in order to leave everything in God’s hands. And he - Ratzinger - is that kind of man. From that moment on things started to change at such a speed that even a veteran of Church government like the Archbishop of São Paulo – formerly Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy from 2006-2010 – is still left speechless. Pope Francis’ election and the signs he sent out right from the start meant “new doors opened as old ones closed.” Things have changed “so fast and in such a wonderful way. People were happy, they started to have faith in the Church again, they realised they could get through this difficult moment and this faith, this hope have not gone away.” There is still a crisis, Hummes admitted, “but it is being dealt with in a positive way and the scandals need to be cleared up, but now people have faith.”

Rohani’s Iran looks to Francis for a peace alliance

On the 35th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, Ambassador Mohammed Taher Rabbani expresses his eagerness to organise a meeting

Iacopo Scaramuzzi vatican city He is one of the first ambassadors to be accredited to the Holy See in the Pope Francis era, in a ceremony on 6 May 2013. He represents a country – Iran – which has always taken an interest in the Vatican (“We have over 60 years of diplomatic relations, but our relations with the Holy See date back to the XIII century…”). Teheran does not just see the Holy See as the global crossroads of another Abrahamic religion, besides Islam and Judaism, it also sees it as an authoritative and independent geopolitical centre that is different from Washington and European governments which have difficult relationships with Iran. While the new President Hassan Rohani - the moderate candidate who elected last June who is showing a willingness for appeasement with the West – celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution  of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Mosavi Khomeini, in Teheran, Iran’s Ambassador to the Holy See, Mohammad Taher Rabbani has met with a group of journalists in Rome to draw attention to the common views the Holy See and Iran have with regard to thorny international issues. These include the Syrian crisis, the importance of ensuring respect for Christians in Iran and praise for the figure of Pope Jorge Mario Bergoglio. The ambassador expressed the hope that “when the circumstances are favourable,” the Pope would meet President Rohani.

“The Holy Father’s work and the conception he has of the poor, the weaker sections of society, the vulnerable members of the human community and his conception of justice have inspired a keen interest among Iran’s high society and its scholars,” Rabbani said. Pope Francis “is a virtuous figure, he is brimming with morality and modesty and the Iranian people expect him to resist oppressors and the powerful, with divine help, just like Jesus Christ.” The Argentinean Pope “is trying to bring justice and combat discrimination among people, substituting it with freedom and authoritarianism with wellbeing, war and bloodshed with peace, development and progress, violence with tolerance.” The Iranian diplomat assured that “in the first year of my mission at the Holy See I got to know the thinking of the Holy Father and I must stress that he is a treasure trove of knowledge and religious science in today’s world.” “I pray every day that God grants the Holy Father good health, success and a long life.” As to the likelihood of the Pope meeting Rohani, Rabbadi said: “Certainly, when the circumstances are favourable, we hope to plan a meeting between his Excellency Dr. Hassan Rohani and the Holy Father Pope Francis.”

Ambassador Rabbani was critical of the way in which the European Union and United States have dealt with the Syrian crisis ahead of the Geneva conference. The Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon withdrew the invitation he had extended to Teheran to take part in the Syria talks. But the Pontifical Academy of Sciences expressed the hope that Iran would take part in the talks.” Russia and the US reached an agreement on the resolution of the Syrian crisis. They contacted both the Syrian government and the rioters. But the conference demonstrated that there had no agreement had actually been reached on a ceasefire or on access to humanitarian aid,” the Iranian diplomat stated. “The rebels have the support of some governments and at Geneva it was stressed that there will be no ceasefire as long as the Assad government is in power. The Syrian foreign affairs minister highlighted that the government is combating terrorism. In Geneva, Western governments have tried unsuccessfully to achieve their goals through media propaganda, while the Iranian people are still suffering as a result of the war. I agree that the Holy See could be a good interlocutor for Iran, given that Western government shave not been sincere in their objectives. If the United States and Europe had been serious and sincere in Geneva, we could have seen an end to the Syrian crisis.”

The ambassador hopes Iran and the Holy See can work together to bring peace. He referred back to a resolution proposed by the Iranian president and approved by the UN in December, entitled “Wave, World Against Violence and Extremism”. “In the last elections, the Iranian people consciously voted for President Rohani whose slogan in the election campaign was “a government of discernment and hope”. President Rohani is interested in reinforcing relations with the Holy See led by Pope Francis through constructive dialogue. He wishes to do so within the context of religious diplomacy, in other words diplomacy that is inspired by religious principles and is capable of putting together a plan to combat violence and extremism in the world, putting an end to war.” “With divine help and the help of the great Abrahamic religions, especially with Pope Francis, Iran – as the country that heads the nations which are not aligned with the West, it could form a global alliance against violence and radicalism to promote lasting peace in the world.” In response to the question of whether an agreement could be reached between the Holy See and Iran on the Palestinian situation, the ambassador simply stressed that “rejecting violence and extremism” can “reinforce relations between the Holy See and Iran.” Ambassador Rabbani made some reassuring comments regarding the situation of Christians in Iran: “Under article 12 and 13 of the Iranian Constitution, all religious minorities in Iran, that is, Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians, are entitled to fundamental rights such as the freedom of worship, the freedom of association and the right to be judged according to the rules of their own religion.” “There are five archbishops in Iran. The Assyrian Chaldean community and the Armenian community each have a representative in Parliament. The Rohani government also appointed a special representative who is in charge of problems faced by religious minorities. As Rohani promised during his election campaign, a letter is currently being written to citizens, clearly outlining the rights of minorities.”

The Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith who was also recently created cardinal protests against the media's portrayal of him and talks about the good relations he has with Francis

ANDREA TORNIELLI vatican city Just a few days before the Consistory that will create him cardinal and after months of controversies in the media over his seemingly rigid stance on pastoral care for remarried divorced persons, an issue which will be discussed at the next Synod, the Prefect of the Congregation, Gerhard Müller, was eager to stress that he is on good terms with Francis. “I am not his conservative opponent,” he said in an interview published by German Catholic news agency Kathpress. The German prelate whom the Pope appointed leader of the dicastery in charge of Church doctrine, is not happy about being presented as an internal opponent of Francis’ pontificate. Müller accepts there are differences in terms of formation and approach but “these complement each other, they are not contradictory.” The new cardinal stated that Francis’ magisterium and speeches cover the “entire Catholic faith.”The Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith meets the Pope two or three times a month and the two communicate in Italian or Spanish (Müller speaks Spanish well having spend quite a bit of time in Latin America). As far as women’s role in the Church is concerned, Müller said they could be given some high-ranking positions in the Vatican: not in the Congregations but in the Pontifical Councils, for example the Pontifical Council on the Family (which is led by Bishop Vincenzo Paglia) or for Health Care Workers. The Prefect clarified, however, that as it is ordained ministers that hold jurisdictional power, neither lay people nor women can become heads of Congregations, that is, the dicasteries that have the jurisdictional power to act on the Pope’s behalf. Other areas in which women could play a greater role are theological research and Caritas, although Müller is against the introduction of set quotas of women. What Müller had to say about the Society of St. Pius X was also importance given that reconciliation is still a possibility: “The door is open,” he said during the interview, recalling the famous “doctrinal preamble” sent to the Lefebvrians in 2012.Finally, Müller remarked on the spirit of collegiality, not authoritarianism that exists in his dicastery. Although the Pope must give his final approval, decisions are taken collectively. The Prefect recalled that in his address to participants of the plenary meeting of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on 31 January, Francis praised the dicastery for its practices of collegiality.

Housing Minister: We marched to support PM in talks

Uri Ariel denies Thursday’s rally of thousands calling for more settlement construction was meant to pressure Netanyahu

February 14, 2014, 10:16 am 1-The Times of Israel
Housing and Construction Minister Uri Ariel (Jewish Home) said that Thursday’s march calling for more settlement building was meant to support Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in peace talks with the Palestinians.“We are coming to strengthen the prime minister in negotiations,” Ariel told Israel Radio Friday morning. “We are with the prime minister, there is no reason to worry.”Ariel added that he had no time to deal with rumors that his party is going to leave the coalition.Labor MK Nachman Shai responded that the march was meant to show “that the prime minister doesn’t have a coalition or a way to reach an agreement with the Palestinians.”Shai likened the protesters to ship passengers boring holes in the hull of the craft in order to sink it. “But what are [Justice Minister and chief negotiator Tzipi] Livni and [Finance Minister Yair] Lapid doing on that ship?” Shai asked, referring to heads of the left-wing Hatnua and centrist Yesh Atid parties.Thousands of demonstrators took part Thursday in the march to the controversial E1 corridor — which links Jerusalem with Ma’ale Adumim to the east — in order to voice their opposition to the ongoing US-brokered peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.Several leading right-wing politicians addressed the gathering, including Ariel and Transportation Minister Israel Katz (Likud).A pamphlet handed out to the protesters called on the government to “withstand pressure from foreign entities” — a reference to US Secretary of State John Kerry’s peace efforts — and to assert Israeli sovereignty in the West Bank by promoting widespread settlement construction.“As a mighty nation that upholds fundamental principles and rights to build and to settle in their home country, we will not give in to any dictates — both from the United States and from the European Union,” read a poster distributed ahead of the march.Ariel promised that Israel would continue construction plans in E1, and said that no peace deal would deter him from pursuing such plans.“There is no authority for the Jewish people to give up any part of the Land of Israel,” Ariel said. “No waiver is binding, nor is it valid. Between the Jordan and the sea there will be only one country, the State of Israel,” he said.Likud MKs Ze’ev Elkin and Danny Danon were also present at the march.“We are here to tell the whole world that this is our land, and that we have the right to build here,” Elkin said.“We were not elected to be Tzipi Livni and Zahava Gal-on’s contractors,” Danon added. In November 2013, Netanyahu ordered a pullback of Housing Ministry plans to construct some 20,000 settlement units — an unprecedented number — including 1,200 homes in the E1 corridor.Netanyahu had said the move to push forward tens of thousands of new units over the Green Line was a “meaningless step” that would create pointless tension with the international community.According to Housing Ministry statistics published in November of last year, 7 percent of new Israeli construction sites erected in 2013 were located in the West Bank, and the number of building projects across the Green Line rose by nearly 130% compared to 2012.

OVIOUSLY JOHN KERRYS BROTHER DOES NOT EVEN KNOW THAT BIBLE OF HIS.HE CONVERTED TO JUDASIM BUT DOES NOT EVEN STICK UP FOR ISRAEL.CAN YOU SAY ANOTHER TWO FACED-DOUBLE TALKIN-ISRAEL HATIN HYPOCRITE IN THE KERRY FAMILY.

Kerry’s Jewish brother: Attacks on John ‘vile’

Brother of top US diplomat, who converted to Judaism, says rhetoric from Israeli right ridiculous

February 14, 2014, 8:34 am 23-The Times of Israel
WASHINGTON  — In an op-ed for an Israeli newspaper, John Kerry’s Jewish brother recalled relatives who died in the Holocaust and labeled “vile” recent personal attacks on the US secretary of state. In the Friday edition of Yedioth Ahronoth, Cameron Kerry described touring the Czech Republic last week with fellow members of his Boston congregation, Temple Israel, and saying Kaddish for siblings of the brothers’ grandmother who were murdered by the Nazis.“These experiences and their deeply personal meaning for my family make it all the more disturbing that some have recently suggested that my brother, John Kerry, had expressed ‘anti-Semitic undertones’ in his pursuit of a framework for negotiations, and some even suggested that he ‘has declared war on God’,” Cameron Kerry wrote.“Such charges would be ridiculous if they were not so vile,” he wrote. The attacks Cameron Kerry refers to came in recent weeks, as reports leaked that John Kerry was set to present Israel and the Palestinians with a framework for a final status peace agreement.Moti Yogev, a Knesset member in the governing coalition, said John Kerry’s mission had an “undertone of anti-Semitism;” separately, a group of rabbis who back the settler movement said Kerry could face divine retribution for his mission.Major US Jewish organizations have rebuked the attackers, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked colleagues not to attack US officials personally.Cameron Kerry praised Netanyahu and other top Israeli officials for defending his brother.“We can all debate the effectiveness of security measures, the delineation of borders, arrangements for East Jerusalem, and other real issues among the parties, but there is no truth and no good that can come by calling into question John Kerry’s good faith toward his own heritage,” he wrote. “Israel and the Jewish people deserve better than that.”The Kerry brothers first learned that their paternal grandparents were Jewish in 2004, during John Kerry’s run for the presidency, when The Boston Globe uncovered his grandfather’s roots.Cameron Kerry had, coincidentally, converted to Judaism and was active in the Jewish community. Until last year, he was general counsel to the US Department of Commerce. He is now a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution think tank and a visiting scholar at the Media Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Obama to meet Jordan’s king in California desert‎

Meeting between leaders to involve discussion of Syrian civil war, Israeli-Palestinian peace talks

February 14, 2014, 6:54 am 4-The Times of Israel
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will launch a new round of Middle East diplomacy Friday in a plush oasis in the arid California desert, hosting a Valentine’s Day summit with Jordan’s King Abdullah II.
Obama and the king will swap the piles of snow in Washington for the Sunnylands retreat at the Annenberg estate in Palm Springs, to discuss issues including the pitiful torrent of refugees pouring into Jordan from Syria. The meeting will be the first of a trio of meetings between Obama and key Middle East leaders in the coming weeks. On March 3, the US president will sit down at the White House for his latest encounter with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has made no secret of his skepticism over an interim deal that Washington and other world powers reached with Iran on its nuclear program. Then at the end of March, he will travel to Saudi Arabia, for what is likely to be a sharp personal reminder that Saudi King Abdullah shares Netanyahu’s doubts about Obama’s strategy of testing the sincerity of an Iranian diplomatic opening.
Obama and his royal guest will sit down in California just two days after the US president admitted that Syria was “crumbling,” while his Director of National Intelligence James Clapper described the civil war-splintered country as an “apocalyptic disaster.”Jordan has borne the brunt of much of the humanitarian overflow — nearly 600,000 Syrian refugees have now crossed its borders, straining its infrastructure and finances.
Obama has all but admitted that his policy is failing in the expressed US aim of sparking a political transition in Syria leading to the exit of President Bashar al-Assad.But he frequently notes that the United States is the largest aid donor to Syrian refugees. Washington has so far donated $1.7 billion to the cause, according to the US Agency for International Development. But there are no signs that the Obama administration believes that a new US policy — or a change in its reluctance to either to do more to arm opposition rebels or to commit direct US military resources — would bring an end to the crisis any closer.Obama will also discuss US efforts to broker a settlement between Israelis and Palestinians with the Jordanian monarch, who strongly backs US efforts. The president’s decision to travel to California to meet King Abdullah has meant some uncomfortable moments on the hotseat for his aides.Reporters have darkly suggested that the president is using the meeting as an excuse to hunker down at the balmy resort — which boasts a highly regarded golf course — for the long President’s Day weekend.Abdullah has been in Washington for several days — so could easily have met Obama already — following his talks with Vice President Joe Biden and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and other officials. The White House points out that before heading to the summit, Obama will tour efforts to mitigate a historic drought in Californian farmlands.“The king is also going to go out to California. The president and the king can meet there and will meet there as part of this trip,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said in evasive comments that hardly tamped down speculation about Obama’s motives.US presidents have often met foreign leaders outside Washington — George W. Bush, for instance, often entertained dignitaries at his ranch in Texas.Obama, who does not own a vacation property, often comes under political fire from Republican foes over his choice of vacation spot — especially when it facilitates his love of golf.Obama may welcome some informal time with Abdullah in a relaxed setting.
The two men have been friendly ever since the king drove then senator Obama to the airport in a silver Mercedes after dinner at one of his palaces in Amman a few months before the 2008 election. But since then, they have mainly met in formal settings. While Obama enjoys his stag weekend, his wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha reportedly have their own mini-break planned elsewhere.Presidents, including Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush have loved the links at Sunnylands since the 1960s.
The course is a nine-hole layout, but two sets of tees allow for a varied 18-hole round to a par of 72.Obama will be making his second visit to the resort as president. Last year, he held an informal shirt-sleeves summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and stayed on for a few rounds of golf.
