Atheist billboard ad hopes to get Calgarians thinking

An atheist organization is hoping its new billboard will challenge the way some Calgarians think.The Centre for Inquiry has installed an ad on Edmonton Trail for six months that reads, "Praying won't help. Doing will. Without God. We're all good."The organization says the campaign has an important message to share.
"We all are inherently moral," said executive director Nate Phelps. "It is a function of what we are born with and what society teaches us. So that's what the message is, that we can be good without ... a belief in God."
He says the Centre for Inquiry is based on science and challenges beliefs based on faith or lack of scientific proof. "We believe that there is a right way to discover the truth, which is the scientific method, and everything else out there can lead to ideas and behaviours that are counterproductive or destructive to society," said Phelps.Calgary is the third city to post the ads.The campaign faced some difficulty in Vancouver when a company that owns billboards refused to post the ads. A competing company later decided to put them up."The hope is that there are going to be some people who are going to look at this and it's going to challenge their ideas, the beliefs that they hold in their mind and that they act on and that we can get movement in the direction of society making better choices — more informed choices," said Phelps.
Phelps says an anonymous donor who supports free speech is paying for the ads in Calgary.

Atheist Ad Goes Up On Calgary Billboard (PHOTO)

A giant ad promoting atheism has been unveiled on a billboard in northeast Calgary.
Previously seen in Vancouver and Sudbury, the ad informs Calgarians that "praying won't help."
“I know that some people are immediately going to be offended by it and see it as an attack on religion,” Nate Phelps, Alberta executive director of the Centre for Inquiry, the group behind the ad, told Metro Calgary.“But I hope that some religious people are at a point in their life that they’re willing to look at this as a challenge, and consider it.”The billboard features a young woman at her computer with the caption “Jenn 13:1 - Praying won’t help. Doing will. Without God. We’re all good,” and is located on the south side of 3603A Edmonton Tr. N.E.“There exists an idea out there that you can’t be good, you can’t be hopeful, you can’t be positive, you can’t lead a good life unless you subscribe to some religious ideology,” Phelps told 660 News.Some Reddit users were quick to claim hypocrisy in the ad, however."This is stupid because it's likely the people who are putting up that billboard would be the type to tell Christians to not shove their beliefs down their necks," wrote user Yojimbe."If this sign was fashioned against any other group it would be immediately shot down and that's where I take issue," said urahozer.Others, however, believe there's a place - and even a need - for the ad in Calgary."It'll be nice to have something on the other side displayed for once. L'Isle-Verte to honour victims of fire with commemorative mass

Almost 1,000 people will pack a church in L’Isle-Verte, Que., Saturday morning for a commemorative mass to remember the 24 people who died, and eight who are still missing after a fire burned down a seniors residence.Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church has been closed to the public while about 50 volunteers from L’Isle-Verte and neighbouring towns prepare for the Roman Catholic ceremony.Political leaders such as Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Gov. Gen. David Johnston and Quebec Premier Pauline Marois will attend the service, along with security officers from the Quebec provincial police and RCMP.L’Isle-Verte’s Mayor Ursule Thériault said she plans to take advantage of Harper’s presence to ask for help from the federal government.“All types of aid for this catastrophe will be welcome,” Thériault said.Parish priest Gilles Frigon said the ceremony will be broadcast so that everyone can grieve.“To have this mass open to the province and to the country is very good — good for us and also very good for those who are offering us their sympathies,” Frigon said.Messages of condolences, as well as a board with pictures of the victims, will be displayed in the church — a way for people in the community to deal with their pain, said one health-care worker.“We have many people who are coming to see us.… People are willing to cry, tell us their stories, and look for help,” said Pierre-Paul Malenfant, a health and social services co-ordinator at the Bas Saint-Laurent Health Agency.Media coverage of Saturday's mass will be limited out of respect for the families involved, organizers said. Harper government, unions spar over veteran office closures as protests continue

The Harper government and the unions have had some epic battles over the years.But this latest exchange seems a little wacky.The government and Veterans Affairs Minister Julian Fantino specifically is accusing the Public Service Alliance of Canada of 'manipulating' the emotions of veterans with regard to their reaction to the closure of eight veterans service centres.The issue hit a climax this week with a testy exchange, caught on tape, between Fantino and several veterans who flew to Ottawa in a last-minute plea to save the offices. The meeting concluded with the disgruntled veterans calling the minister disrespectful and asking him to resign."There are a few things [Fantino] should be told," WWII veteran Roy Lamore according to CBC News."Taught manners is number 1, number 2 to respect the veterans, and number 3, it's time that he better wake up and give us a break on these things."In an interview with Sun News, Fantino alleges that those veterans were being "jacked up" by PSAC officials."[The union] manipulated them. It was taking advantage of people who have served the country and in some cases are getting older. It's scurrilous," Fantino was quoted as saying."Earlier in the day, the union leaders were also overheard briefing the vets on their strategy and questions and lines they were to use."It was a setup," he continued."The union exploited these folks and that to me is reprehensible."For their part, the union admits that PSAC paid for the veterans to fly to Ottawa. But they say that there was nothing wrong with that."We're proud to have supported veterans by paying for their flights and hotel rooms because veterans were finally heard in Ottawa," Yvan Thauvette, the president of the Union of Veterans Affairs Employees, told Yahoo Canada News in a telephone interview."We've asked for months and months and months that the minister fly into those communities where the offices are set for closure to talk to veterans and their families and listen to their concerns. And he didn't do it."So now it's our fault? It's kind of weird."Thauvette claims that PSAC wasn't doing any 'manipulating' on Friday either when hundreds of veterans gathered to protest each of the eight closures.Protesters have also launched a black ribbon campaign."Canada’s veterans are seeing their supports slashed and their benefits cut. Indonesia volcano kills at least 11, fears over more eruptions

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia's Mount Sinabung volcano erupted and killed at least 11 people on the western island of Sumatra on Saturday, the first time it is known to have claimed any lives, a senior government official said.The volcano has becoming increasingly active in recent months, regularly spewing columns of ash several kilometres into the air. The government has evacuated tens of thousands of residents near the area."Eleven people were killed because of the eruption this morning and the number could increase. No evacuations could be made at this stage because of the potential for more eruptions," Andi Arief, a presidential staff member, told Reuters.Sinabung is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes in the world's most populous country, which stands along the "Ring of Fire" volcanic belt around the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

Canadian security agency says airport Wi-Fi spying program isn’t a bad thing

There is an old saying that has become more prescient in this technological age that goes something like this: If you are not paying for something, then you are not the customer. You are the product.Once upon a time, that was simply another way of saying there is no such thing as a free lunch. Nowadays, it is a reminder that there is a market for, and a desire to collect, personal information shared online. And there still is no such thing as a free lunch.Facebook accounts, Instagram feeds, Starbucks hotspots. These are provided free not out of the goodness of the company's collective hearts, but because they profit in other ways. And as U.S. privacy whistleblower Edward Snowden has proven, security agencies have a taste for your online data as well.The latest battlefield in the war on online privacy is in Canada's airports, where CBC News reports passengers have fed their information to Canada's electronic spy agency hand over fist.In an exclusive report, CBC claims top secret documents obtained by Snowden show that the free Internet service available at a Canadian airport was used to track wireless devices of those who log in, sometimes for days after the fact.

In short, when someone logged on to that Wi-Fi hotspot and fired off a few emails before boarding their flight, they could have shared information with more than just the email’s recipient. Metadata could have also been spread, detailing a trove of information about the habits and activities of the user.Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC) was quick to respond to the report, stating that it is the agency's mandate to "collect foreign signals intelligence to protect Canada and Canadians, and by law, only directs its foreign intelligence activities at foreign entities." Basically, no Canadians were harmed in the collecting of this metadata.
The statement reads:

In order to fulfill this key foreign intelligence role for the country, CSE is legally authorized to collect and analyze metadata. In simple terms, metadata is technical information used to route communications, and not the contents of a communication.The classified document in question is a technical presentation between specialists exploring mathematical models built on everyday scenarios to identify and locate foreign terrorist threats. The unauthorized disclosure of tradecraft puts our techniques at risk of being less effective when addressing threats to Canada and Canadians.It is important to note that no Canadian or foreign travellers were tracked. No Canadian communications were, or are, targeted, collected or used. And all CSE activities include measures to protect the privacy of Canadians.

Its "metadata" activities passed inspection in 2011 and are being reviewed again.According to CBC, the Snowden document suggests CSE's tracking operation was a trial run launching in connection with America's powerful National Security Agency (NSA), and that it has now become fully operational.

So we have a spy agency using invasive and secretive methods to collect information through a free hotspot to analyze general trends and habits, and flag those who don’t follow the norm. Canada is part of a Five Eyes intelligence network – with Britain, Australia, New Zealand and America – that shares security information between partners. Is a “you spy on our citizens, we’ll spy on yours” pact impossible, or even unlikely? OpenMedia.ca, a community-based group that recently launched a campaign against CSEC spying, calls the recent development "stunning" and suggests the program is illegal.“This bombshell development unequivocally confirms that this government has been spying and tracking the location of law-abiding Canadians,” said executive director Steve Anderson in a statement.
“Until today, the government has been hiding behind their claim that CSEC was not spying on us. Now, we know the truth - this reckless government spy agency has been caught red-handed invading the privacy of thousands of law-abiding Canadians.”Recently, it was revealed that the CSEC received $460 million of public money last year – up from a budget of $97 million before 9/11. US Secretary of State John Kerry said Saturday he was hopeful that the Israelis and Palestinians would be able to reach a peace agreement in the US-brokered talks, saying Washington’s drive for Middle East peace was not “quixotic.”Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Kerry said he believes in the chances of reaching an accord between Jerusalem and Ramallah, and reiterated his warning of the potential fallout should talks fail. He warned that the current relative security Israel enjoy could prove to be an illusion that would change entirely should negotiations not yield an agreement with the Palestinian Authority.“The risks are very high for Israel. People are talking about boycott. That will intensify in the case of failure,” he said. “We all have a strong interest in this conflict resolution.”“I am hopeful and we will keep working on it,” Kerry said. ”I believe in the possibility or I wouldn’t pursue this. I don’t think we’re being quixotic … We’re working hard because the consequences of failure are unacceptable.”The secretary of state said both sides were working hard to reach a deal, and those efforts would continue in the coming days.“With the help of the EU and Quartet, we are pursuing long-sought and much-needed peace between Israelis and Palestinians,” he said. Kerry and representatives of the Middle East Quartet — Russia, the European Union and United Nations — met on the sidelines of the Munich conference. Iranian officials told former US State Department official that Tehran considers Saudi Arabia its primary enemy, not Israel or the United States, a Kuwaiti newspaper reported on Saturday.Frederick Hof told Kuwaiti media outlet al-Rai that in a recent closed door meeting with Iranian officials, they said Riyadh’s intervention in the Syrian civil war on the side of the rebels poses a strategic threat to Tehran.Iran has been a staunch supporter of Syrian President Bashar Assad, and Hof said that Tehran was “concerned about the consequences of the sectarian and civil war in Syria, but Saudi Arabia will benefit from sectarianism in the region.”“The US and Israel haven’t intervened in Syria,” the Iranian officials were quoted saying. “The real problem is Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.”Hof formerly served as the State Department’s special adviser for transition in Syria.Concerning Iran’s proxy in Lebanon, Hezbollah, Hof quoted the Iranian officials saying that the Lebanese Shiite terrorist group serves as Tehran’s “first line of defense in case Israel opts to launch a strike against [Iran's] nuclear facilities.”“Iranian officials believe that any Israeli leader who might think about launching any attack on Iran should first think about the impact of rockets on Israeli cities, economic infrastructure, and military bases,” he added.Providing Hezbollah with material support is “not an easy task for Iran,” Hof is quoted saying. MUNICH — The United Nations’ secretary-general pressed the US and Russia to help ensure that peace talks aimed at stemming Syria’s civil war can soon resume, while Russia’s foreign minister said Saturday that it is “very difficult” to push Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government to make concessions.A week of peace talks ended in Geneva on Friday with no concrete progress and no immediate commitment from Assad’s envoys to return on Feb. 10 for more meetings with the Western-backed opposition as suggested by mediator Lakhdar Brahimi.UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told a conference of global security officials in Munich that he urged Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry at a meeting on the sidelines “to use their influence to ensure the talks proceed as scheduled on Feb. 10.”The US has insisted that Assad cannot be part of a transitional government and has lost his legitimacy to lead, while Russia has been a key ally of Assad’s government.Ban urged the warring parties to “come back with more sense of earnestness as well as seriousness and urgency.” Specifically, he called on “both sides and the government in particular to allow the unfettered access required under international humanitarian law.”An agreement to allow aid convoys into the central Syrian city of Homs has remained stalled, with the government and opposition accusing each other of holding up the aid delivery into the city, which has been under siege for nearly two years.Lavrov insisted that “Russia can do nothing alone” and urged the US and others to exert their influence on the Syrian opposition.Lavrov said the humanitarian situation in Syria is “outrageous” but insisted that “we’ve got to be realistic,” arguing that the Syrian government is willing to deliver aid to Homs and deliveries to other cities, such as Aleppo and suburbs of Damascus, should also be an issue.“I can assure you that we are putting daily pressure on the Syrian government,” Lavrov said during a panel discussion at the conference. “It is a very difficult situation and to try to convince the government, which is waging a war, to make some gestures — this is a very difficult task.”Kerry raised concern over the humanitarian situation, especially in the besieged areas such as Homs, when he met with Lavrov Friday night. He also insisted anew that the creation by mutual consent of a transitional governing body must be a primary focus in the next round of talks, according to a senior State Department official who wasn’t authorized to discuss the private meeting by name.The meeting discussed the need for the opposition to expand its delegation, the official said.The opposition delegation does not control armed groups inside Syria, including al-Qaida-backed militants, who do not feel bound by agreements reached in the talks.Brahimi has struggled to find positive words about the outcome of the first round of talks, but Lavrov welcomed “the modest but important results” and said he hoped they will be “deepened and expanded” in the next round.Ban said that “it is hard going but we have made a start.”“The parties may still be fighting but now they are also talking – this is the only hope for a political solution,” he said.

The UN humanitarian coordinator for the Palestinian territories Friday criticized Israel’s demolition of 36 homes in the Jordan Valley and urged a halt to such actions in the West Bank.Hundreds of activists, meanwhile, staged an overnight demonstration in the Jordan Valley region.The moves came as fresh opinion poll evidence showed that faith in the Middle East peace process has largely evaporated among both Israelis and Palestinians.The demolitions in the Jordan Valley community of Ain el-Helwe on Thursday displaced 66 people, including 36 children, James Rawley said in a statement.“I am deeply concerned about the ongoing displacement and dispossession of Palestinians… along the Jordan Valley where the number of structures demolished more than doubled in the last year,” he said.“This activity not only deprives Palestinians of access to shelter and basic services, it also runs counter to international law.”His office said more than 1,000 people had been displaced last year in the West Bank and annexed east Jerusalem by demolitions on the grounds that homes had been built without Israeli permits, “which are virtually impossible to obtain”.On Friday, around 300 Palestinians together with Israeli and foreign activists set up camp in abandoned houses near Jericho in the West Bank to protest against Israel’s refusal to pull out of the Jordan Valley in case of a peace deal, an AFP photographer said.The demonstrators in Ain Hijleh village were equipped with generators and said they planned to spend the night in around a dozen of the houses, as Israeli troops and police kept watch from a distance.They held a banner reading: “No peace with settlements.”Their action — dubbed “Melh al-Ard” (salt of the earth) — aimed “to revive an old Palestinian Canaanite village in the Jordan Valley”, to counter any Israeli annexation plans, the activists said in a statement.They condemned Jewish settlement construction in the West Bank and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process brokered by US Secretary of State John Kerry.His efforts would “establish a disfigured Palestinian state and recognises the Israeli entity as a Jewish state”, they said.Such a state would put Arab Israelis at risk of deportation at any time, the activists said.Faith in the Middle East peace process has largely evaporated among Israelis and Palestinians in the two decades since the Oslo accords and a famous White House lawn handshake, a new poll found Friday.
According to the Zogby Research Services poll, neither side has much confidence in the new push for peace being led by Kerry, which the pollsters believe is proving a hard sell.Although two decades have elapsed since then Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin shook hands watched by then US leader Bill Clinton, “it is clear several deep differences exist” plaguing the atmosphere between the two sides.“Twenty years later only 18 percent of Palestinians and 19 percent of Israelis view Oslo as a positive development in the history of their relationship,” the poll said.Both sides believe the other is not committed to peace.And only around a third of people in each community sees a two-state solution as feasible, even though 74 percent of Israelis and 47 percent of Palestinians agree it is the desired outcome.
“From the results of this poll, it is clear that the past 20 years have taken a toll on the confidence both Palestinians and Israelis have in the peace process that began with the 1993 signing of the Oslo accords,” the poll said.Kerry is trying to draw up a framework agreement which would set out the end game in the resumed negotiations and guide the talks going forward over the next few months.Twenty years ago both Palestinians, some 61 percent, and Israelis, some 54 percent, said they “were hopeful” when the Oslo accords were signed, setting out a roadmap for the peace process.The poll was carried out in the Middle East in August 2013 among 1,000 Israelis and Palestinians, just as Kerry persuaded the two sides to resume talks after a three-year hiatus.

Government gave settlers $42 million ‘compensation’ for building freeze

Livni, Labor leaders demand investigation into secret payments, some of which were in turn used by pro-settler lobby group

The Israeli government secretly channeled 148 million shekels (over $42 million) to the local city councils that administer settlements across the West Bank in recent years, to “compensate” them for city taxes they did not receive because of a government-imposed settlement-building freeze in 2009-2010.News of the secret payments, reported by Israel’s Channel 2 News on Friday night, provoked an immediate demand by the opposition Labor Party for an investigation by the Attorney General and the State Comptroller into what it said could be illegal funding. Israel’s Justice Minister Tzipi Livni also promised to investigate the affair.
According to the TV report, furthermore, some of the secret government payments were in turn transferred by the local settlement city councils to the Settlers’ Council, a private group that lobbies for the settlements and frequently conducts activities criticizing the government for policies deemed as damaging to the settlers. Israel’s Supreme Court has already ruled that use of public funds by the Settlers’ Council to fund such activities is illegal.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu imposed the temporary building freeze on West Bank settlements in November 2009, and it ended in September 2010. It was introduced by Netanyahu under pressure from the Obama administration, as part of an effort to draw the Palestinian Authority back to the negotiating table. PA President Mahmoud Abbas did resume talks with Israel toward the end of that period, but he walked away from the talks soon after, and Netanyahu refused to extend the freeze. Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians were then stalled for almost three years before the current negotiations began last July.Because of the freeze, the building of thousands of scheduled homes in the settlements was delayed, and the local councils apparently argued to the government that they should be compensated for the city tax revenue they would have received from residents of those homes had they been built. Thus, every year since the freeze, the government has secretly paid money to the various settlement councils in compensation, the TV report said. To date, the total amount of public money handed over is 148 million shekels. The payments are defined as a “security grant,” the report said.In turn, the report continued, a substantial portion of this money was passed on to the Settlers’ Council lobby group. The Settlers’ Council acknowledged receiving some such monies, the TV report said, but stated that it had done nothing illegal.
Livni said she would look into the matter. The Settlers’ Council was headed for part of the period in question by Naftali Bennett, who led a campaign against the building freeze and who now heads the pro-settler Jewish Home party in the Israeli government. Bennett, Israel’s economy minister, opposes Palestinian statehood, and is a bitter rival of coalition partner Livni, who heads Israel’s negotiating team with the Palestinians.

Lifting the veil on the science of counting Jews

Surveying thousands in southern Florida, Professor Ira Sheskin of University of Miami helps Jewish federations plan for the future

Fueled by KitKats and Cherry Coke, some two dozen people sit hunched over stacks of questionnaires in a windowless conference room in Miami, a phalanx of 1980s-era push-button telephones in front of them.
It’s the first day of work on a new survey of Miami Jews, and operators are having a hard time finding cooperative respondents.“To you personally, is being Jewish, 1, mainly a matter of religion; 2, mainly a matter of ancestry; or 3, mainly a matter of culture?” a surveyor asks.Ira Sheskin, the go-to man for Jewish communities that want to count their Jews, is overseeing the work. A professor of geography at the University of Miami, Sheskin is now on his 43rd Jewish federation population study, and he’s got it down to a science.He has found that subjects are much more likely to talk if the interviewer is female. Because of the unique background of Miami Jews, Sheskin has hired interviewers who speak six different languages. Those with some fluency in Judaism offer certain advantages, such as the ability to discern when a respondent has misunderstood a question about whether they keep two sets of dishes to be about kitchenware rather than Jewish observance.For the Miami survey, Sheskin has brought some of his veteran interviewers with him: Two women from Pennsylvania who have worked with him twice before and his octogenarian mother-in-law, who sits in a corner dutifully dialing numbers. His son and wife are helping out, too.“When you get someone on the phone who is cooperative, it’s actually a very interesting process that both the respondent and the interviewer benefit from,” says Sheskin, 63, who did his first large community study in 1982, also for the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. “You hear some fascinating stories in these interviews, and you realize how inconsistent some people are.”The last time the Miami federation took a census, in 2004, it found 113,000 Jews in Miami-Dade County. A lot has happened since: Hundreds of Latin American Jewish families from Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina and elsewhere have immigrated. The economic crisis and real estate bust of 2008 hit the state hard, slowing domestic migration to Florida for several years. The Orthodox community in Miami Beach appears to have grown. Old people died. Babies were born.“The change in the complexion of the population has been really dramatic,” says Jacob Solomon, CEO of the Miami federation.
But without hard numbers, no one knows exactly how dramatic. That’s where survey data come in.The new study, whose results are expected to be released this fall, will provide not only demographic data — country of birth, age, number of children, education level, religious denomination, Jewish observance level and more — but also take the pulse of community members on such issues as their emotional attachment to Israel, frequency of synagogue attendance, the importance of being Jewish to their lives and what sorts of Jewish activities they do.In all, there are 151 possible questions, culled from past surveys and refined through 15 focus groups, four federation committee meetings, and discussions between Sheskin and federation leaders. About 80 percent of the survey is identical to Miami’s last one, in 2004.These kinds of population surveys are meant to help Jewish agencies and institutions plan for the future. If, for example, the number of Jewish households with young children is falling in a particular city, it may put the local JCC’s expansion plans on ice. A question in the Miami survey about the newspapers read by respondents is meant to help guide the federation’s newspaper ad spending. A survey Sheskin conducted years ago in nearby Broward County helped a Reform synagogue in Fort Lauderdale figure out that it was better to refurbish their old building than erect a new one 2 1/2 miles away, where it turned out few Reform Jews lived.“There’s no question in my mind that these types of results provide data to federations that allow them to do better planning,” Sheskin told JTA. “I’ve never seen a federation that doesn’t want to do a study. Finding money is always the issue.”
This study is costing the Miami federation about $300,000.“We allocate over $20 million per year — that’s $200 million over 10 years,” said Solomon, the federation CEO. “So to spend $300,000 once a decade to help guide the wisdom of committees and boards and agencies and synagogues as to how spend their money seems like a good investment.”There’s a certain rhythm to survey taking. First, operators cast a wide net, calling number after number on Random Digit Dialing lists Sheskin has generated with local area codes. Finding Jews among respondents is a little like finding needles in a haystack, but it’s not an idle exercise. The early phone calls — probably about 7,000 of them — help calculate the number of Jews as a portion of the total population.Operators then start zeroing in on the Jews, culling numbers from lists provided by Jewish institutions, including cellphone numbers with non-Florida area codes. Interviews usually take 15-17 minutes to complete.Twenty years ago, the work was more straightforward. But telephone surveying has become more difficult due to the decline of landlines, the rising number of locals with non-local cellphone numbers and the propensity not to answer calls from unfamiliar numbers.In the Miami survey, every number gets four tries, and interviewers call back those who specify a more convenient time to talk. In an effort to boost cooperation, the federation has taken out advertisements in local media and mailed thousands of postcards alerting community members they might be calling.The goal is to get a sample size of roughly 1,800 Jews — enough respondents not just for the overall picture, but also enough to learn about subgroups: Holocaust survivors, Latin Jews, Israelis, retirees, parents. In all, the calling period will probably last five weeks. Interviewers work four-hour shifts spread over 12-hour days, earning $18 per hour.Then comes the work of entering and crunching the data — Sheskin’s interviewers record answers by hand — and months of study. By fall, the survey should be ready to make news.“Even if everybody doesn’t respond, and even if things aren’t perfect,” Sheskin says, “you still get a pretty good idea of what the Jewish community looks like.”

Johansson quits Oxfam over Israeli settlement trade spat

Jerusalem (AFP) - US actress Scarlett Johansson has ended her role as Oxfam ambassador following a dispute over her ad campaign for a firm operating in an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank.Johansson's departure, announced overnight by her publicist, was welcomed by Palestinian activists on Thursday, although some criticised Oxfam for not acting itself to sever ties with the Hollywood star they branded the "new poster girl for Israeli occupation."In a statement, Oxfam confirmed accepting Johansson's decision to step down, saying her promotion of Israeli drinks firm SodaStream, which has a factory in a settlement east of Jerusalem, was "incompatible" with her role at the international aid agency."Oxfam believes that businesses, such as SodaStream, that operate in settlements, further the ongoing poverty and denial of rights of the Palestinian communities that we work to support," it said."Oxfam is opposed to all trade from Israeli settlements, which are illegal under international law."And Human Rights Watch's Middle East director Sarah Leah Whitson said: "It is impossible to ignore the Israeli system of unlawful discrimination, land confiscation, natural resource theft, and forced displacement of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, where SodaStream is located."The incident shines a spotlight on the creeping success of a campaign to boycott trade linked to Israeli settlements that are built on Palestinian land seized during the Six-Day War of 1967, and viewed by the international community as illegal.The 29-year-old actress, who has worked with Oxfam since 2005 and was recently crowned the "sexiest woman alive" by Esquire magazine, came under scrutiny earlier this month after she was named global brand ambassador for SodaStream.The firm, which is based near Tel Aviv and manufactures a device for making carbonated drinks at home, has 25 factories around the world, including one in Mishor Adumim industrial park, near Maaleh Adumim settlement east of Jerusalem.It employs 800 Palestinians alongside 500 Israelis, a company spokesman told AFP.Johansson quickly came under fire from boycott activists, who posted a series of provocative images online showing the actress promoting the drinks machine in front of destroyed Palestinian homes and Israel's towering West Bank barrier.And Oxfam itself weighed in with a statement expressing its opposition "to all trade from Israeli settlements."In response, Johansson insisted SodaStream was committed to "building a bridge to peace between Israel and Palestine, supporting neighbours working alongside each other, receiving equal pay, equal benefits and equal rights"."That is what is happening in their Maaleh Adumim factory every working day," she said in a statement to The Huffington Post.The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) praised Johansson's statement and commended her "principled opposition" to the "anti-Israel BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) movement"."BDS and anti-Israel activists have long engaged in a smear campaign against SodaStream," the US-based anti-Semitism watchdog said.'Poster girl for occupation'

Vatican bank admits widows fell victim to glitch

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Dozens and perhaps hundreds of widows and Vatican pensioners recently came in for a rude surprise: The Vatican bank told them they had to close their accounts or risk losing access to their money — all in the name of Pope Francis' reform efforts, The Associated Press has learned.The bank now says it was all a "technical error" and that the widows and pensioners are being kept on as clients, amid the bank's highly-publicized plan to close so-called "lay accounts" as it tries to mend relations with Italian authorities who have suspected that Italians were using the bank as a tax haven.It's all come as a big embarrassment for an institution that is trying to fend off accusations of mismanagement and corruption.
"In some cases old ladies got nasty letters," Max Hohenberg, spokesman for the Institute for Religious Works — or IOR — told The AP. "The fact that a few dozen people were categorized in the wrong way and hence got a letter which was incorrect is a mistake which we have apologized for."Bank President Ernst Von Freyberg penned a terse letter to clients Sept. 19, telling them to come to the bank before Nov. 30 to transfer their money out because they no longer fit the criteria of account-holders set by the board. He warned somewhat ominously that if they didn't meet the deadline, their money would become subject to the "internal dispositions" of the bank, according to a copy of the letter obtained by AP. He didn't say what those "internal dispositions" were.But somehow some former Vatican employees and their widows got caught up in the sweep, apparently because of the way their accounts were classified by the bank internally. Their accounts have now been reclassified after they pleaded their cases to the bank.The bank's board issued new guidelines for who could have an account at the bank in July as part of efforts to end decades of problems and scandal that had tarnished the Holy See's reputation — and were in part responsible for bringing the reform-minded Francis into the papacy.The new criteria for determining account holders was also aimed at responding to recommendations by European experts who have been evaluating the Holy See's anti-money laundering efforts. In its 2012 inaugural evaluation, the Council of Europe's Moneyval committee urged the Vatican bank to put into law regulations about who can and cannot hold an account since the existing norms were vague.The issue has been of particular interest in Italy, where regulators have long suspected that the IOR was being used by well-connected Italian civilians to avoid paying taxes. The institute, which has just one office inside a tower in the sovereign Vatican City State, is considered a foreign bank by Italian standards and as such not subject to Italian regulatory control.In truth, many lay Italian citizens held legitimate accounts there because they worked for the Vatican: art historians from the famous Vatican Museums, gendarmes who protect the pope, as well as administrators, legal and financial experts working in the Holy See bureaucracy.When they retired, these former employees could receive their Vatican pensions into these accounts and benefit from the IOR's investment services. Whether they or their widows informed the Italian taxman of the existence of the accounts or paid taxes to Italy on any interest income earned is another matter.
Vatican retirees who live in Italy must declare the existence of a foreign bank account on their Italian tax returns, even if the Vatican pension itself is exempt, noted Benedetto Santacroce, a tax lawyer and expert in international taxation. He said any interest earned on that pension is taxable income as far as the Italian taxman is concerned.Failure to declare the account or pay taxes on any income could result in significant back taxes and sanctions, though the Italian government recently reduced the penalty in a bid to encourage "voluntary" disclosures to curb tax evasion, he said.Italian news reports have said that as many as 900 accounts were slated for closure and that some 300 million euros were expected to exit the IOR's coffers as the bank transferred the money to clients' accounts elsewhere.In a statement, Hohenberg stressed that the IOR had never confirmed or denied the number of accounts slated for closure, saying only that "a significant amount of customers" had been notified that their accounts were to be closed. Hohenberg said the termination process is now proceeding on a case-by-case basis and stressed that the account closure problem was a minor glitch in the bank's mammoth reform undertaking."While the board decision exactly defines the clientele to be serviced by the IOR, we are seeking to handle the whole process in a responsible and sensitive way and under close supervision of AIF," the Vatican's financial watchdog agency, he said. "Whenever an affected client can reasonably argue that the IOR's classification has not been accurate, the case will be looked at thoroughly."Monsignor Fernando Vergez, the No. 2 in the Vatican's governorate, which administers the Vatican City State, said in recent weeks he had compiled and signed "well over 100" personnel records and sent them to the bank at the IOR's request, attesting that these former employees were indeed receiving either partial or full Vatican pensions. German top court to rule on whether ECB can buy bonds

Udo Di Fabio, who served as constitutional judge between 1999-2011, told an audience at the Berlin-based Stiftung fur Familienunterhmen on Wednesday (29 January) that the court is "deliberating at the moment if the ECB can buy bonds at all."According to EU laws, the ECB is prohibited from direct government funding, meaning direct bond purchases when a national government tries to sell debt on the markets.But in the past years, the eurozone bank has engaged in "secondary bond purchases" which are bought from investors and considered an investment by the ECB.These bond purchases helped lower Spanish and Italian borrowing costs, which had spiked in 2011, prompting fears that the third and fourth largest economies in the euro would also be forced to apply for a bailout.One year later, when borrowing costs were on the rise again, ECB chief Mario Draghi came out with an even bolder promise.He said his bank would buy as many bonds as necessary to help a troubled country, provided it signs up to a reform programme.The so-called Outright Monetary Transactions (OMT) scheme has never been used. But its calming effect on markets lasted throughout 2013 and helped the eurozone regain relative stability.Bond purchases were already deemed "unconstitutional" in a preliminary verdict by the Karlsruhe-based court in 2012.Back then, it spoke only about direct purchases which would have been in breach of EU law.More than 35,000 Germans have since filed complaints against the OMT, with the Constitutional Court expected to deliver a verdict in April or refer the case to the European Court of Justice.Di Fabio said it was unlikely for the court to reject the entire scheme and cause a "firebrand in Europe."But, as was the case with previous verdicts on the eurozone bailout fund and the Greek bailout, Karlsruhe is likely to boost the rights of the German Parliament were OMT to be activated."The particular issue Karlsruhe will be looking at is national budget sovereignty, as enshrined in German law. Budgetary self-determination of a nation is fundamental and cannot be transferred," he said."Parliaments were put in place so monarchs cannot use people's money as they please. National parliaments have to be sovereign in controlling the use of taxpayers' money.If Rome decides on an expenditure, it cannot be that the Netherlands and Germany are held liable for it. If that were the case, then Dutch and Germans should also be able to vote in Italian elections for the parliament," he added.Di Fabio said the current EU treaties also pose limitations on how many tasks the ECB can take on.
"EU treaties don't foresee a common bank supervisor and even less for the ECB to be it," he said.The former judge said the treaty needed to be added to in light of the ECB new future role of supervising the eurozone's largest banks.He also raised questions about the yet-to-be-established bank resolution fund, which foresees banks chipping in to a common pot to be used if one of them needs bailing out."European banks are heterogeneous. In some countries, banks are aggresive and oversized. If there was joint liability, it would force the less risk-taking banks - like the ones in Germany offering low interest rates to their customers - to guarantee the other banks in other states where interest rates are higher because risks are higher," he said.

MEPs want to 'blackmail' commission candidates over EU budget

BRUSSELS - Budget control committee MEPs want future commissioners to take a tougher line on how member states spend EU funds.

They say they will make this a key part of their assessment of new commissioners, due to start work in autumn.German centre-right Markus Pieper, in charge of assessing how the European Commission spent its money in 2012, told this website on Thursday (30 January) that candidates will face a hostile job interview if they don’t make a commitment to cut wasted expenses by a group of eight ‘black sheep’ member states.
“If the commission doesn’t fulfil our conditions, then we need stronger political pressure on the commission,” he said.The countries in the spotlight are: the Czech Republic, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Poland, and Romania.With the five-year terms of the 28 EU commissioners soon coming to an end, member states are set to select a new team.But first, each candidate must be cross-examined by MEPs.Pieper said his candidate ‘black mail’ strategy has already received support among all the shadow rapporteurs.The circle of MEPs working on the report is set to lobby their colleagues to reject any candidate who does not meet their criteria.Pieper is unhappy with how the commission attempts to reduce member state error rates on EU-funded projects and programmes and wants the Brussels-executive to directly monitor the way EU funds are being spent.The error rates have increased for a third year in a row, according to the EU’s budget watchdog, the European Court of Auditors, with some 80 percent committed by the eight member states alone.Most of those mistakes should have been uncovered by the national authorities, according to the Court.But Pieper says there is little incentive to improve the rate because it is “EU money.”If a project is identified as having errors, making it ineligible for EU funding, then the money can be used by the member state for another project.“Up until now it is possible to replace projects and this is from our point of view, not very efficient,” he said.Any misspent money should instead trigger an automatic procedure that would deduct a sum from the national coffers, he says.The commission formulates its risk analysis on error rates by relying, in part, on national audit reports provided by the member states.“From our point of view, they [the commission] trust them too much, which is one of the reasons for our reservations for the next period,” said Pieper.Pieper wants the commission to bypass the eight member states’ national auditing authorities altogether and deal directly with those who receive the funds.If the upcoming commissioner candidates disagree, then they stand to lose the backing of the assembly, he says.For its part, the commission says it is working on ways to extend its oversight powers.MEPs are set to give their assessment of how the commission spent the 2012 budget in mid-April.

Foreign agendas keep Syrian peace talks going

GENEVA (AP) — Weeklong Syrian peace talks have neither stemmed the bloodshed nor produced a deal, yet pressure is mounting on Syria's government and the opposition to keep the process going after a brief break.There are two major reasons: the United States and Russia, which both have their own interests in pushing the negotiations, and no obvious or viable alternatives to a process that seems to be going nowhere.
Crucial for the Americans is the need to prevent President Bashar Assad from running for re-election this summer in what they assume will be a rigged vote, analysts say. That would enable Assad to claim a mandate to stay in power and the violence to continue indefinitely.The talks have enabled the Russians, Assad's chief diplomatic backers, to show themselves as key players in Middle East diplomacy — a claim they can promote regardless of whether the process delivers an end to the civil war any time soon.In the meantime, the war in Syria rages unabated.Assad's forces are solidifying gains, but the battle lines are largely stalemated. The rebellion against Assad's rule has been sapped by deadly infighting among moderates, Islamic groups and al-Qaida-inspired militants competing for control of territory, weapons and influence. Much of the world appears to have lost faith in the rebels, largely because of the growing influence of Islamic extremists among their ranks.That has produced a narrowing of differences between the U.S. and the Russians, who now feel vindicated for sticking by their longtime ally in Damascus."I think what's most important for the Russians is that the peace talks are taking place," said Andrea Liebich, honorary professor of international history and politics at the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies."It's a question of prestige, and they are anxious to be seen on equal footing with the United States, to be in the spotlight. ... For them, the outcome of the talks is less important than the process itself," he said.
For the Americans, backing down from a threat to strike militarily following a chemical weapons attack in August has left the Obama administration with little choice but to pursue a diplomatic track."Any solution on the ground would require some kind of military action — and that's no longer on the table," said Rami Jarrah, a prominent Syrian anti-government activist. He said both Russia and the U.S. now had a stake in "politicizing" the Syrian conflict away from what is actually happening on the ground.The Western-backed Syrian National Coalition opposition group, whose support within Syria has diminished considerably, agreed only reluctantly to attend the peace talks after arm twisting from the Americans, but made clear that its purpose was solely to negotiate a replacement for Assad. For the Syrian government that's a non-starter.
"The opposition in exile has lost a lot of its authority on the ground. They've really staked their reputation on these talks, and they have to come away with something," said Anna Boyd, an analyst with IHS Jane's.
Delegations from the U.S. and Russia have been in daily contact in Geneva, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the talks' sensitivity. The open lines of communication indicate their growing — and shared — fears that the civil war is reaching a point where it can no longer be contained or controlled by any single player. Fear of a resurging al-Qaida is a common denominator among the U.S., Russia, Saudi Arabia and Iran — all proxy players in the civil war now in its third year."The U.S. stands to lose if the talks are a failure, whereas the Russians have nothing to lose. But if they are a success they could claim part of the credit," Liebich said.In interviews with The Associated Press in Switzerland this week, government and opposition representatives have repeatedly said they would not walk away from the peace talks, regardless of the provocations or the bleak outlook.Meanwhile, international powers are using this engagement to search for common ground.Upcoming presidential elections in Syria may prove to be it.
Assad's family has ruled Syria since 1970. None of the elections for Bashar Assad or his father Hafez was considered free or fair by most international standards, and few analysts expect the upcoming contest originally scheduled for this summer to be any different should he run. Assad himself has said he is inclined to run, but he hasn't ruled out alternatives in the elections.The sides have a few months to persuade Assad not to run again, betting on it as the only way out of the current political and military impasse. But in an interview with the AP Wednesday, his adviser, Bouthaina Shaaban, suggested the vote might not take place amid the raging violence.Buying time for the vote could do the same for the peace process, which many involved expect to go on for weeks, if not months, as the two sides try to agree on smaller confidence building measures — such as local cease-fires, aid deliveries or prisoner exchanges.__Hinnant reported from Paris. WASHINGTON — The Obama administration will soon present a framework for an Israeli-Palestinian agreement that the sides may accept with reservations as a basis for a final deal by year’s end, the top US negotiator told Jewish leaders.Martin Indyk, the State Department’s lead envoy to the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, told the Jewish leaders on Thursday that under the framework agreement about 75-80 percent of settlers would remain in what would become Israeli sovereign territory through land swaps; he added that it was his impression that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was not averse to allowing settlers who want to remain as citizens of the Palestinian state.Indyk said the framework would be presented to the sides within weeks, and that there will be “no surprises” for the Israeli and Palestinian leaders, according to four people who were on the off the record call.This was because Indyk and Secretary of State John Kerry consulted closely with the leaders of both governments as Indyk’s team drafted the agreement.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abbas would be expected to accept the agreement, with reservations, as the basis of continued negotiations, Indyk apparently said.Making it a US-drafted framework permitted the leaders to distance themselves from politically sensitive issues, Indyk said. “There may be things we need to say because they can’t say them yet,” he said, according to the notes of one participant.Broadly, Indyk said, the agreement will address: mutual recognition; security, land swaps and borders; Jerusalem; refugees; and the end of conflict and all claims.A request for comment from the State Department was not returned.On some sensitive issues — particularly the status of Jerusalem — the framework would be vague, but Indyk went into detail on other issues that participants said was surprising.

The American government under President (Franklin) Roosevelt, a hater of Israel, stood firm against bombing the death camps, spreading lies about a lack of military ability, but the truth is they knew that bombing the camp would reduce the murder of Jews in Europe," charges Sheftel.Drawing from the message of the Holocaust, Sheftel warns against the current pressure from Europe, which is linked to the pressure from America as reports indicate US Secretary of State John Kerry is orchestrating the European boycotts. The pressure aims to force Israel into territorial withdrawals to the 1949 Armistice lines."Without the passivity of the European nations and the US, the scope of the Holocaust would have been half as small, therefore it's clear that the attempts today to return the state of Israel to the Auschwitz borders is meant to complete what they didn't complete then," remarked Sheftel.Sheftel has previously warned that American should not be relied on, and that Kerry is displaying clear enmity to Israel.

The United States intends to achieve a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) by the end of 2014,  American Jewish leaders who were briefed by envoy Martin Indyk said on Thursday.
The leaders who spoke to Channel 10 News said that Secretary of State John Kerry’s framework agreement, which was originally scheduled to be presented at the end of January, will be presented within weeks.According to these Jewish leaders, who were not named, Kerry’s agreement mentions a Palestinian state with borders based on the 1949 Armistice lines and with land swaps between Israel and the PA. 75 to 80 percent of the Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria would remain in their homes even after a permanent agreement.The agreement will include a reference to the PA’s incitement against Israel and will also include a reference to compensation for Jewish refugees who came from Arab countries, the leaders told Channel 10 News. The Arabs would recognize Israel as a Jewish state, Israel would recognize the Palestinian state, and the two sides will announce the end of the conflict, they said.The Jewish officials further noted that even after the agreement is presented, the sides will not be forced to agree to it and the parties will be allowed to present their reservations, though they would be required to continue the negotiations based on the principles that appear in the document.As for the status of Jerusalem, the participants in Indyk’s briefing told Channel 10, Kerry's framework agreement will not go into too much detail on this issue and will only mention "general principles and aspirations.”Much has been said in recent weeks of the framework agreement that Kerry is planning to bring forward, but nothing official has been made public yet.On Wednesday, Thomas Friedman of the New York Times published some details of Kerry’s plan which, he said, will call for a phased Israeli withdrawal from Judea and Samaria based on the 1949 lines, with "unprecedented" security arrangements in the strategic Jordan Valley.The Israeli withdrawal will not include certain settlement blocs, but Israel will compensate the Arab side for this with Israeli territory. The deal will call for “Palestine” to have a capital in Arab East Jerusalem and to recognize Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people. It will not include any right of return for Palestinian refugees into pre-1967 Israel, Friedman said.The plan was blasted by Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon, who declared that “it is not going to happen.”“Israel will not split Jerusalem nor will it withdraw to the pre-1967 lines,” Danon said, adding, “The only thing good about this plan is that the Palestinians will recognize Israel as a Jewish state. It’s about time.”Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu made clear last week that whatever Kerry brings forward would not be an agreement but " a suggestion for a framework for negotiations.”“This is not an agreement, but a path to making progress,” Netanyahu told reporters in Davos.He also clarified that he will not evict any Israeli communities as part of a peace agreement. Despite this week’s semi-apology by Jewish Home party leader Naftali Bennett over his criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposal to allow Israelis to live in a future state of Palestine, the spat between the factions gained new life Friday as two old interviews came to light.Makor Rishon’s Hagai Segal reported on a 1999 interview he did with the prime minister, then in his first term, in which Netanyahu called the idea of Jewish settlers living in a Palestinian state “absurd.”“Do you know anyone who would support something like that?” Netanyahu asked. “Can you find an Israeli who agree to that? Who would agree to live under Palestinian rule? That’s absurd.”“This is another way to say, We will wipe out these settlements by giving them over to the Palestinian Authority. It’s absurd.”This week, by contrast, the prime minister and his Likud allies castigated Bennett for challenging the idea that settlers could live in a Palestinian state.The interview surfaced shortly after another embarrassing statement came to light, this time showing a Jewish Home MK taking the very position for which the party panned Netanyahu. In televised comments just a few weeks ago, MK Ayelet Shaked said that Israelis should be allowed to stay in a Palestinian state and expressed incredulity that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas would not allow this.If there is to be a peace agreement, Shaked told the i24 television news network in an English-language interview on December 29, 2013, “I don’t see a reason why the settlements [sic] cannot stay and live in a Palestinian state if they want “I don’t think the two-state solution will happen,” Shaked added, but she went on to ask, “Why does Abu Mazen [Abbas] want a Palestinian state cleared of Jews? I just don’t get it… There are Arab villages [in Israel] and I think they should have the same rights as myself. I think Jews can live in the Palestinian state.”Bennett, Shaked’s boss, was in a high-profile fight this week with Netanyahu over this very issue. The Jewish Home chairman reacted publicly to comments by an official to The Times of Israel saying the prime minister was insisting that Jewish West Bank settlers be given the option to remain in their homes under Palestinian rule, following the signing of a peace deal.Bennett dismissed the idea out of hand, and said that history “won’t forgive” an Israeli leader who relinquished parts of the Land of Israel under a peace deal. The row lead to a short-lived coalition crisis. Bennett on Wednesday partially apologized for his remarks, but did not change his position.On Thursday, Shaked, confronted with the apparent inconsistency of her position, criticized the statements coming from the Prime Minister’s Office this week as representing “a real offer from someone who agrees to a Palestinian state” — something she opposes — whereas her remarks to i24 were about an “imaginary scenario as an example” to expose “the racism of Abu Mazen, and nothing else.“I am very much against the dangerous idea of two states, and I don’t think it will happen,” she added.Housing Minister Uri Ariel, Jewish Home’s No. 2, defended Shaked, saying her December comments were true “in principle,” but that “in reality” Jews would not be able to live under Palestinian rule. “In principle, those who speak of peace, but do not let us live in our homes, are racist and anti-Semitic.
