The PLO will begin drafting an immediate plan for Palestinian membership in international institutions in response to Israeli construction in the West Bank, official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported Monday evening.The Palestinians — who won the status of nonmember observer state at the UN in November 2012 — had agreed not to apply for membership in international institutions for a nine-month period in return for a gradual Israeli release of 104 Palestinian prisoners jailed before the signing of the Oslo Accords in September 1993. The fourth and final phase of the prisoner release is scheduled for the end of March.

“The Executive Committee [of the PLO] has called on its political committee to immediately prepare an operative plan implementing the precepts of the UN decision on the membership of the state of Palestine and the benefits of joining international UN organizations and treaties,” read a statement issued following a PLO meeting Monday night in Ramallah headed by PA President Mahmoud Abbas.Israeli construction beyond the Green Line is considered by Palestinians the most significant impediment to a peace deal. The government approval last week of 1,400 new homes in the West Bank earned criticism from both coalition and opposition members, and was described by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as “an obstacle to peace.”The Executive Committee noted in its statement that the pace of settlement construction has hastened during the negotiations with Israel, which began last July.PLO Executive Committee member Hanan Ashrawi has been pushing for a Palestinian international drive as early as last August, telling Palestinian Radio that it was a mistake not to begin the appeal before the recent round of negotiations got under way.Israeli experts are divided on the danger of unilateral Palestinian accession to international institutions. One Israeli official told The Times of Israel that Palestinians have managed to “hijack” UNESCO’s agenda and turn it into an Israel-bashing organ since joining the UN’s cultural organization in October 2011. Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon lashed into US Secretary of State John Kerry and savaged US-led peace talks with the Palestinians in private conversations, according to a Tuesday report in a major Israeli daily.

The unsourced report in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper recounts Ya’alon lambasting the security proposals drawn up by Kerry as part of his peace plan as being “not worth the paper it is printed on” and something that won’t provide security for Israel.The report also quotes Ya’alon calling Kerry “inexplicably obsessive” and “messianic” in his efforts to coax the two sides into a peace agreement. Ya’alon said Kerry has “nothing to teach me about the conflict with the Palestinians.“All that can ‘save us’ is for John Kerry to win a Nobel Prize and leave us in peace,” the paper quotes him saying.A Defense Ministry spokesperson declined comment. In a reference to the Yedioth report, Ya’alon said Tuesday, “Even if there are disagreements between us and the Americans in our discussions, they shouldn’t overshadow our shared goals and interests.”Ya’alon, considered a defense hawk, has publicly expressed skepticism over plans for Israel to pull out of the West Bank, and firmly opposed an Israeli withdrawal from the Jordan Valley.

Speaking privately, Ya’alon said an American security plan that could ostensibly facilitate a safe withdrawal by Israel, and which calls for advanced electronic surveillance in the West Bank area instead of an Israeli military presence, would actually “ensure that Ben Gurion Airport and Netanya become a missile target,” which only “our continued presence in Judea, Samaria and the Jordan River” will prevent, according to the report.“What are you talking about?” Ya’alon was said to have directly retorted to assertions by Kerry recently that his security proposal would render Israel’s eastern border more tranquil that the US-Canada border. “You’ve given us a plan based on advanced technologies — satellites, sensors, war rooms with TV screens — but with no presence in the field of our forces. How is that technology going to help when a Salafist or an Islamic Jihad terror cell tries to attack Israeli targets?” Ya’alon reportedly wondered. “How are satellites going to quash the rocket-building industry that’s developing in Nablus and that will launch rockets at Tel Aviv and the center of the country?”He also hammered into Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, saying his continued rule of the West Bank was only thanks to Israel.“The moment we leave Judea and Samaria he’s finished,” Ya’alon was quoted saying. “In practical terms for the last few months we’ve been holding talks not with the Palestinians, but with the Americans.”He also lamented that the Palestinians had yet to give up anything in the ongoing peace negotiations, while Israel had “released murderers,” a reference to a series of prisoner discharges in which 78 longtime Palestinian terror convicts have been freed in recent months. “Enough is enough.”In response, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who is managing talks with the Palestinians, spoke out in defense of Kerry and the peace efforts, saying they were being pushed by Washington “out of a deep understanding that this is in Israel’s interests.”“The negotiations are held in such a way that Israel’s interests are safeguarded, primarily its security. Those years, he has said, left him with the unshakable conviction that the Palestinians are unwilling to accept any sort of national Jewish entity alongside them and that ceding territory only served to encourage further aggression.In 2005, as chief of the IDF General Staff, Ya’alon made his opposition to the disengagement from Gaza known. Then-prime minister Ariel Sharon and defense minister Shaul Mofaz opted against granting him the customary fourth year in office and released him from service in July of that year, several weeks before the withdrawal.Kerry has made 10 visits to the region this year, shuttling between Israeli and Palestinian leaders to mediate talks.Recently, he has been pushing a framework agreement as part of his efforts to nudge Abbas and Netanyahu closer to a full treaty that would establish a Palestinian state alongside Israel.But the two sides have reportedly been at odds over almost every aspect of the core issues involved in a two-state accord. Iran said it is sending officials to Russia to choose a substitute for the sophisticated long-range S-300 air defense missile system, which Russia said it would not deliver to Tehran.Iran’s Fars news agency reported Tuesday that National Security and Foreign Policy Commission chair Alaeddin Boroujerdi met with Iran’s ambassador to Russia to discuss possible replacements for the S-300 system.“A team from the defense ministry has left [for Russia] and another team is due to travel there again to discuss the issue,” the news agency quoted Defense Committee chairman Esmail Kosari as saying.One possible substitute suggested by the news agency was the Antei-2500 system, which does not fall under sanctions imposed on Tehran and is geared for use by ground forces — unlike the S-300, which is geared towards use by missile defense forces.

In 2010, Russia called off the sale of five S-300 missile batteries to Iran as part of an agreement worth $800 million.The two countries had signed the S-300 missile system deal in 2007, but it was canceled as part of UN Security Council sanctions against the Islamic Republic. The cancellation led to tensions between the two countries, including a $4 billion Iranian lawsuit against Russia.In November, Iran announced it had inaugurated a missile production plant aimed at improving the country’s air defense capabilities.Iranian Defense Minister Gen. Hossein Dehghan announced that the Sayyad-2 missile production facility would allow the Islamic Republic to hit helicopters, drones and other aerial targets at medium range. The solid fuel gives the missiles improved accuracy compared to liquid-fueled missiles, which make up the bulk of Iran’s air defense arsenal.Dehghan said scientists have also completed research on another missile system named Talash, or effort.A week later, Tehran said it successfully tested a new air defense system modeled after the US Hawk system during a drill in the country’s east. A senior Iranian official called the maneuvers a “slap” to America and Israel.Earlier reports said the new surface-to-air system is named “Mersad,” or Ambush. It is capable of locking a flying object at a distance of 80 kilometers and can hit from 45 kilometers away, state TV said.Tehran has been trying to set up a self-sufficient military program since 1992, putting an emphasis on air defense and naval power.Israel and the West have expressed concern in the past over Iran obtaining the state-of-the-art anti-aircraft missiles, as they could severely affect the outcome of an airstrike against Iran’s nuclear reactors. Israel has also urged Russia not to sell the S-300 system to Syria, where it could impact Israel’s air supremacy relating to both Syria and Lebanon.Israel and the US have not ruled out a military option against Iran’s suspect nuclear program, which the West fears intends to produce atomic weapons. Iran denies the charge, saying its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

New 10 euro banknote to circulate from September

Berlin - The European Central Bank (ECB) will start circulating a new 10-euro banknote from 23 September,(2014) ECB board member Yves Mersch told press on Monday (13 January).It will be more colourful than its predecessor and is designed to have a more easily recognisable figure 10. It also contains extra security features on both sides to make life harder for counterfeiters."It certainly resembles the 10 euro notes you have in your pockets, with its [images of] distinctive Romanesque architecture. However, perhaps it will have more of a visual impact, as the images are larger and more defined, the colours are stronger and the bridge has added depth," Mersch said.The ECB last year launched a new five-euro bill which features a hologram of Europa, a mythological princess symbolising the origins of Europe.The new 10 euro bill is the second in the “Europa” series."The five euro and 10 euro notes are not always treated kindly. By protecting them better, we can prolong their service life and reduce their environmental impact," Mersch added.
Introduced in 2002, the euro was first used in 12 countries, but is now the common currency of 18 states and 334 million people."Twelve years after the euro banknotes and coins were introduced, it’s easy for us to take them for granted and to forget what an ambitious, even bold, project it was to introduce the euro. The single currency has helped to bring millions of Europeans together, in all our diversity," Mersch said.With around 15 billion banknotes in circulation worth over €900 billion, the euro is "broadly comparable" to the total value of available US dollar bills, he noted.Asked by a German journalist if the ECB is considering withdrawing the €500 note, which is seldom used in day-to-day life, but which attracts forgers,

Until now, euro notes carried pictures of windows and doors in various architectural styles in a symbol of openness designed not to offend national sensibilities.The new notes will also carry an emerald-coloured number.The first series of banknotes will circulate alongside the old ones. But the old notes, first introduced 10 years ago, will eventually cease to be legal tender."The date when this occurs will be announced well in advance," the ECB said.The old notes will retain their face value and will be exchangeable at any national central bank in the eurozone even when they are no longer valid in shops.Meanwhile, counterfeiting euro notes has kept international law enforcement authorities busy.In April, an international police sting in Bogota, Colombia dismantled a counterfeit print shop and depot manufacturing €50 and €100 bills.Europol, the EU’s police agency, based in The Hague, said authorities seized over €19 million in counterfeit money in Columbia alone since 2006.

BRUSSELS - EU countries have provisionally agreed to send troops to Bangui airport to protect civilians and distribute aid.An EU source told EUobserver that member states' ambassadors on the Political and Security Committee "unanimously" endorsed the proposal at a meeting in Brussels on Friday (10 January).
The final decision is to be taken by foreign ministers on 20 January.Details on the composition and mandate of the "battalion"-sized force will be worked out in the next few weeks.Another EU diplomat told this website the ambassadors voiced "overwhelming support" for the need to intervene in the "awful" sectarian conflict and to "show solidarity" with France, the former colonial power in the Central African Republic (CAR), which has already deployed troops under a UN Security Council mandate.Some 100,000 refugees are currently taking shelter at Bangui airport under French protection.The initial proposals included an alternative option - to send the EU force to patrol roads from CAR to neighbouring Cameroon.But French President Francois Hollande voiced preference for the airport mission at the last EU summit in December.
A third EU contact said the airport operation is considered to be "safer" and "more easy to execute successfully" than setting up roving patrols on the Cameroon access points.The conflict erupted in 2012, but escalated last year when rebels entered the capital.Christian-Muslim clashes are said to have claimed more than 1,000 lives and displaced almost 1 million people in the past few months alone.CAR is a mineral-rich state, which hosts uranium mining investments by French firm Areva.

Well, go to Google Translate, select Italian as the source language and type in “Bergoglio”. The Pope’s surname translates as “better world” in any target language you choose.I tested this out myself and here are the results Google Translate came up with in some of the target languages I selected: Latin: mundo melius; Hungarian: jobb vilag; Basque: mundo hobea; Portuguese: mundo melhor; Spanish: mundo mejor; Esperanto: bona mondo; English: better world. In German, French, Romanian and Greek, the translation given is in English. “better world”. It makes no difference whether you type “bergoglio” in lower or upper case.It’s hard to explain this little number and even Google Italy seems clueless as to who is responsible. Celebrations must be sober and simple.”After announcing his new cardinal nominations at yesterday’s Angelus, Pope Francis put pen to paper and wrote a brief but important letter to each of the 19 cardinals, underlining the fact that their new role is not a promotion or an honour, it is about lowering themselves and giving humble service. None of the appointed individuals were informed about their nominations. Most of them found out when they turned the television on.

Today’s letter reads:“Dear brother,

“On the day that your designation as part of the College of Cardinals is made public, I wish to send you a cordial greeting along with the guarantee of my closeness and prayer. It is my hope that, joined with the Church of Rome and “clothed in the virtues and sentiments of the Lord Jesus”, you may help me with fraternal efficacy in my service to the Universal Church.“The cardinalship does not imply promotion; it is neither an honour nor a decoration; it is simply a service that requires you to broaden your gaze and open your hearts. Pope names 16 new cardinal-electors, from 12 countries and all continents

Francis will create 16 new cardinal electors on February 22, and give red hats to 3 who are over the age of 80 that cannot vote in a conclave. Five are from “the peripheries”. His first consistory shows he is beginning a process to limit significantly the number of electors from Europe and the Roman Curia.

They come from fifteen countries, including some of the poorest countries in the world, and all five continents.Sixteen are cardinal electors with a right to vote in a conclave, among them are 6 Europeans (including 4 Italians), 5 Latin Americans, 2 Africans, 2 Asians and 1 North American (from Canada). Significantly, twelve of are residential bishops that currently govern a diocese. The other 3 cardinals are over the age of 80 and so cannot vote in a conclave.Five notable hallmarks distinguish this first batch of cardinals named by the Argentinean Pope, including universality, attention to the peripheries of the world, and a break with the tradition of giving the red hat to the heads of 8 major Italian dioceses.

Universality is the first hallmark. Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in Africa. The Ivory Coast has been plagued by civil war, internal strife and much poverty. Both Haiti and the Antilles have never had a cardinal before.Another particularly striking aspect is the Pope’s decision to break with the tradition that the heads of the nine major Italian dioceses should be cardinals. Since the Lateran Pacts in 1929, it was customary to assign red hats to the archbishops of nine major Italian sees beginning with Rome and, in descending order by reason of the number of faithful, Milan, Turin, Naples, Palermo, Bologna, Florence, Genoa, and Venice. Four hold senior positions in the Roman Curia and will receive the red hat: Parolin (Italy) – the Secretary of State; Baldisseri (Italy) - Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, a body the Pope wants to strengthen with a view to developing synodality in the Church; Muller (Germany) – the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a man that is very close to Benedict XVI who appointed him to this post in July 2012; Stella (Italy) –the Prefect of the Congregation for Clergy.In this context, the choice of the two other European electors stands out:   Nichols of Westminster (England) and Bassetti of Perugia (Italy), both of whom he appointed to the Congregation for Bishops earlier in the month.The fifth significant aspect of the list is that the Pope did not give a red hat to any of the Presidents of the Pontifical Councils as had been the practice in recent decades, nor did he give one to the Prefect of the Vatican Library and Archives. It would seem that Francis did not create any new elector in the United States because like Italy, though to a lesser extent, the USA has already a disproportionate number of electors (11) in proportion to the size of its Catholic population (7% of the world’s Catholics),even more than Brazil (5). Italy has gained cardinal electors in this consistory mainly due to the fact that Italians have key positions in the Roman Curia, but its number is destined to decrease even this year.

In Asia the Pope gave red hats to key archbishops in the Philippines and South Korea. In the Philippines, the most populous Catholic country of Asia, the Pope sprung a surprise by naming as cardinal Orlando Beltran Quevedo, the archbishop of Cotabato. He is leader in an area that is a melting pot of Christians and Muslims, a respected peace advocate and knowledgeable observer of the conflict ridden situation in Mindanao, and former Secretary General of the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences.In South Korean he recognized the Archbishop of Seoul, Andrew Yeom Soo jung, descendant of a Korean martyr and leader of a flourishing and vibrant Church, as well as apostolic administrator of Pyongyang in this divided country.In Africa, the Jesuit Pope chose the leading archbishops of Burkina Faso and the Ivory Coast: Philippe Ouédrago, archbishop of Ouagadougou, and Jean-Pierre Kutwa, archbishop of Abidjan, both sees had cardinals before.rior to his announcement on Sunday, 12 January, there had been much speculation in Rome that Pope Francis would increase the membership of the college of cardinal electors from the present number of 120, established by Paul VI, to 130 or more, but   he decided not to do so. This left him with 14 red hats to assign on February 22 – the actual number of vacancies in the college of cardinal electors on that day. But aware that 2 more cardinals would reach the age of 80 before the end of May, he decided to take that into account too, and raised the number to 16.As a result of his decision, the College of Cardinal Electors will have 122 members on 22 February, composed as follows: Europeans 59 (Italians 29), Latin Americans 19, North Americans 15, Africans 13, Asians 13, and Oceania 1. In a significant break from the stated Palestinian negotiating position on the right of return, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said that he could not negotiate away the absolute right of Palestinian refugees and their descendents to return to sovereign Israel.Speaking to a crowd of Palestinians from East Jerusalem on Saturday, Abbas voiced a hard-line regarding a number of matters on the negotiating table, stating that no peace agreement will be possible without East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital. He also refused to recognize Israel’s self-definition as the state of the Jewish people, a principle endorsed on Sunday by Arab foreign ministers.The traditional Palestinian position on the “right of return” follows the language of the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, which stipulates a “just and agreed upon solution based on UN resolution 194.” This formula was used by Abbas in his speech at the UN last September, as well as at his speech at the World Economic Forum in Jordan last June.But in his speech Saturday, Abbas made no reference to the international decisions pertaining to the matter.“Let me put it simply: the right of return is a personal decision. What does this mean? That neither the PA, nor the state, nor the PLO, nor Abu-Mazen [Abbas], nor any Palestinian or Arab leader has the right to deprive someone from his right to return,” he said.A mechanism for compensating refugees choosing to remain in their host countries may be established, he noted, but the final word remains that of the individual refugee.‘Abbas is aware that in the past his vulnerability was refugees,’ Ezbidi said.“The choice is yours. You want to return? You will return. You don’t? You’re free to remain; there is compensation and other details … I just wanted to remark on this point, that the right of return is a personal right. Even a father cannot forgo his children’s right.”A toughening of Palestinian positions was to be expected from a leader who is widely regarded on the Palestinian street as too accommodating on the refugee issue, remarked Palestinian political scientist Basem Ezbidi of Bir Zeit University, near Ramallah.

“At this point Abbas isn’t really interested in showing any flexibility while the Israeli side remains as stubborn as it is,” Ezbidi told The Times of Israel in a telephone interview. “While the Israelis are stating hard lines on various issues, Abbas is doing the very same thing.”The Palestinians have argued that Israel’s demand to leave IDF forces in the Jordan Valley in a final agreement contradicts understandings reached with former Israeli administrations which agreed to an international presence only.“Abbas is aware that in the past his vulnerability was refugees,” Ezbidi added. “He was outspoken when saying that an ‘unconventional’ solution is needed. As someone who didn’t champion the right of return, he now sees an occasion to undue that.”

Himself a refugee from the city of Safed, Abbas was widely criticized by Palestinians following an interview with Israel’s Channel 2 on November 2012, where he said he had no right to return to his home town and had no territorial demands beyond the 1967 lines.During his fiery speech on Saturday, Abbas was interrupted numerous times by the enthusiastic crowd, which repeatedly chanted Palestinian slogans.

Abbas paused once to comment on the slogan “millions of martyrs are marching to Jerusalem,” a slogan closely associated with his predecessor Yasser Arafat, who would often chant it in public rallies.“‘Millions of heroes, or millions of free men are marching to Jerusalem’,” Abbas corrected his audience. “We want to go alive. We do not seek death, but we welcome martyrdom if it happens.”Earlier in his speech, Abbas praised the behavior of the Palestinian villagers in Qusra, who captured and beat a group of settlers allegedly en route to carry out a “price tag” attack.“The villagers circled them [the settlers] with their bare hands … they circled them and did not attack them because we are civilized, and have a just cause. Not like them, who attack trees and mosques. They were handed over to the [Israeli] coordination forces safe and sound. This should be a lesson in manners for these neighbors. With few signs of progress after five months of US-brokered talks, Secretary of State John Kerry is expected back in the region in the coming weeks to deliver a “framework” for a future peace deal.Biden was in Israel on a one-day visit to attend the funeral of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Before leaving, he met Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Sitting alongside Peres, Biden said that even as unrest shakes the wider Middle East, “the one place where there is a possibility for an island of stability … is between the Palestinian people and the Israeli people in two secure states, respecting one another’s sovereignty and security.”

The sides have set an April target date for agreeing upon a framework for peace. But in recent weeks, they appear to have hardened their positions.The Palestinians seek the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip, territories captured by Israel in 1967, for an independent state.Netanyahu wants to keep parts of the West Bank and says he will not share control of east Jerusalem, home to sensitive religious sites. Arab ministers back Abbas in rejecting ‘Jewish’ Israel

Arab foreign ministers notified US Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday that they will not accept Israel as a Jewish state nor compromise on Palestinian sovereignty in Jerusalem, backing positions voiced by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Malki told the official daily Al-Ayyam on Monday that nine Arab foreign ministers, comprising the followup committee for the Arab Peace Initiative, had agreed during a meeting in Paris Saturday to present to Kerry a unified Arab position on core Palestinian demands.The meeting between Kerry and the foreign ministers took place on Sunday evening at the residence of the American ambassador in Paris, and is the fifth meeting between Kerry and the Arab follow-up committee, Al-Ayyam reported.“A clear and unified Arab and Palestinian position was presented [to Kerry] rejecting the recognition of Israel as a Jewish state,” Malki told the daily. “The American secretary heard this position from me and from other Arab foreign ministers, who also consider East Jerusalem to be the capital of the Palestinian state.”The Arab positions on Jerusalem and Israel’s “Jewishness” are a direct challenge to a demand voiced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for signing a peace deal with the Palestinians. In recent days, Netanyahu was quoted by Israeli media as saying that he will push for the exclusion of the Jerusalem issue from negotiations.Netanyahu faces heavy pressure to hold his ground from coalition partners as well as hardliner members of his Likud party. Palestinian protesters block settlement entrance

IDF denies it arrested three activists during demonstration at Elazar against alleged confiscation of land

A group of Palestinian protesters blocked the entrance to the settlement of Elazar south of Jerusalem Monday.Thirty-five Palestinians and foreign activists blocked the entrance to Elazar, in the Etzion bloc, causing a traffic jam until security forces arrived and arrested three protesters, the coordinator of the Popular Committee to Resist Wall and Settlement in Bethlehem Mohammed Brejiyeh told the Palestinian News Network.He added that the protest demonstrated the Palestinians’ rejection of the settlers’ presence in the West Bank and that they will continue to rally in opposition to Israelis’ presence there and the confiscation of Palestinian lands for settlement construction.Brejiyah also alleged that the security forces assaulted the protesters.The IDF spokesperson’s office told The Times of Israel that there was a demonstration at Elazar, but the protesters agreed to leave when ordered to do so by security forces. It was not aware of any arrests in the incident.The activists claim that the settlement was built on land that belongs to the West Bank district of Bethlehem and is controlled by the Palestinian Authority. They began to plant olive trees as a sign of protest.The fate of Jewish settlements is one of the issues at the core of the current impasse in Mideast peace efforts. The Palestinians want a state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, lands Israel captured in 1967, and are willing to accept only minor land swaps in drawing the final border to accommodate some of the settlements Israel has built on war-won land. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is understood to be seeking a wider ongoing Israeli presence in the West Bank, although he has not specified his position.

The Housing and Construction Ministry announced last Friday that it had approved tenders for 1,400 new housing units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The move drew condemnation from the Palestinian Authority, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Israeli left.

Former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon Laid to Rest

The funeral procession for Israel's 11th prime minister, Ariel Sharon, who died on Saturday at age 85, began Monday morning at the Knesset at a formal event attended by President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, US Vice President Joseph Biden, and former British prime minister Tony Blair.

Sharon is to be laid to rest at his Havat Hashikmim (Sycamore Ranch) in the Negev on Monday afternoon, next to his late wife, Lily."Arik, you were the shoulder on whom Israel's security rested," said President Shimon Peres standing in the Knesset plaza, where Sharon's flag-draped coffin stood on a black marble plinth. "The story of your life is bound to the story of this country. And your life was dedicated to the life of this country."Your footprints are imprinted on every hill and in every valley," Peres wnt on. "You cultivated the land with your scythe and defended it with your sword. Your fingerprints are on every diplomatic situation and every military outpost. You took and implemented the difficult decisions. You never rested in service of your people, when defending your land and making it flourish. "The land from which you came will embrace you in the warm arms of the history of our nation to which you added an unforgettable chapter," he said under bright blue skies as a row of Israeli flags flapped in the background.“This man had a commanding presence,” said Biden, the first foreign speaker at the event. “He filled the room. When the subject of Israeli security arose, which it always did, you immediately understood how he acquired the nickname 'bulldozer'. He was indomitable.“Sharon was a complex man who engendered strong opinions freom everyone,” Biden went on. “But like all real leaders, he had a north star that guided him. His north star was the survival of the state of Israel and the Jewish people, wherever they resided.“In the late 90's he said – 'Before and above all else, I am a Jew. I am concerned with the future of Israel in 3 years, 300 years, a thousand years'. Because he possessed such physical and political courage he never deviated from that 'preoccupation' with Israel as he called it.“We have an expression in the states – 'never in doubt'. Arik seemed never in doubt. There were times when he acted and these actions earned him condemnations. But American presidents were never shy with him when they wanted to air their differences, nor was he with them.“He was a complex man who also lived in complex times and in a very complex neighborhood. It's time for Israelis to look at the arc of his life, which is also the arc of Israel's history. Through it all, the US has been unflagging in its commitment to the state of Israel. We have never failed to defend Israel's legitimacy and no one has any doubt where America stands with regard to Israel's security. That will never change.” Blair spoke next, praising Sharon for being "warm-hearted and passionate about his country of course, but also about his family and his farming.""He took actions no one ever thought he would take," noted Blair, referencing Sharon's forming of the Kadima party in 2005 to force his "Disengagement" plan through in expelling all Jews from Gaza.Blair argued that "the idea that (Sharon) changed from a man of war to a man of peace misses that which defined him," claiming the Sharon never changed, and his "strategic objective" to secure Israel "never wavered," whether that objective was pursued through "fighting or making peace."Sharon, according to Blair, was a "bold, unorthodox, unyielding" model, serving as a "standard bearer" for Israelis leadership by demonstrating the "imagination to know that genuine peace, if obtainable with honor and dignity for Arabs and Israelis, is the goal."Blair further praised Sharon for possessing something that he claims exists in all Israeli leaders he's met. "Beneath the maneuvers and machinations...something unusual is found in Israeli politics, a supreme love for the state of Israel and the land of Israel, for what it is, what it took to build it, and what it will take to sustain it.""Israel was an idea" to Sharon, claimed Blair, an idea that after centuries of victimhood, the Jewish people "should have a state where they could be independent and free, afraid of no one, equal to everyone."In conclusion, Blair called Sharon "wise enough to know that war alone could not support (Israel's) future."After a few more speakers, the ceremony ended as participants rose for the singing of "Akaviya Ben Mahalalel" by IDF Chief Cantor Lt. Col. Shai Abramson.The text of the song, taken from the sayings of the sage from the Mishnah (in Tractate Avot), read "consider three things and you will not come to sin; know from where you came, to where you are going, and before who you will give an accounting. From where you came, a putrid drop. To where you are going, a place of dust, worm and maggot. Before who you will give an accounting, before the supreme King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He."Sharon's casket was then removed for transportation to the Negev ranch.

An IDF rabbi cuts small incisions in the shirts of Sharon’s sons, Gilad and Omri, a ceremonial act signaling grief and the start of the seven days of Jewish mourning, or shiva.The IDF’s top generals then empty prepared sacks of dirt onto the open grave as the IDF’s chief cantor recites traditional burial prayers.

Kaddish read for former PM, now buried

With Sharon now buried, the funeral is nearing its conclusion with the recitation of Kaddish, the traditional Jewish prayer for the dead.All in attendance are standing at attention. The funeral was brief, no more than 15 minutes from the arrival of the casket to the burial.A final prayer is being read by the IDF’s chief rabbi Brig. Gen. Rafi Peretz, a man who has delivered prayers for Sharon during this day of commemoration despite being a Gaza Strip evacuee pulled from his home in the Gaza settlement of Atzmona in August 2005.

After Peretz, Sharon’s two sons Omri and Gilad read the Kaddish once again.
