President Barack Obama gave a Hanukkah blessing of freedom to Jews the world over in a statement released Wednesday, while his counterpart British Prime Minister David Cameron tried to calm Israeli concerns over a recent deal to scale back Iran’s nuclear program.Obama began by noting the extreme rarity of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving coinciding, as they do this year.“For the first time since the late 1800s — and for the last time until some 70,000 years from now — the first day of Hanukkah falls on Thanksgiving,” he said in a statement released by the White House. “It’s an event so rare some have even coined it ‘Thanksgivukkah.’ As we gather with loved ones around the turkey, the menorah, or both, we celebrate some fortunate timing and give thanks for miracles both great and small.”The president made a connection between the Jewish festival of lights and the US annual celebration of its founding history.“Like the Pilgrims, the Maccabees at the center of the Hanukkah story made tremendous sacrifices so they could practice their religion in peace,” he said. “In the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, they reclaimed their historic homeland.”“As the first Hanukkah candle is lit, we are reminded that our task is not only to secure the blessing of freedom, but to make the most of that blessing once it is secure,” Obama noted and wished the Jewish communities in the US, the State of Israel, and the world over, a “Hag Same’ah” — Hebrew for happy holiday.Across the Atlantic, British Prime Minister David Cameron held a festive reception at Downing Street during which he lit a traditional eight-branched menorah together with British Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis. Along with other dignitaries, former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak attended the event, the Jewish News reported on Wednesday.Cameron addressed the recent Geneva agreement between world powers and Iran to roll back the latter’s nuclear program, seeking to reassure those alarmed by what they see as an inadequate outcome to the negotiations.“I share your skepticism over the Iran deal,” he said. “An enemy of Israel’s is an enemy of mine… but in my judgment this is the right step to take.”The deal left Israel concerned that the terms agreed had fallen short of the overall objective of preventing Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons.“I know there will be great skepticism, I know there will be great worry,” Cameron said. “All I will say to you tonight is that I share your skepticism, I share your worry. EU punishes Israel on settlements, rewards it on UN club

BRUSSELS - Poor Israeli PR has seen the EU enforce new rules on science funding, but EU states compensated Israel with a UN gift.Under the funding deal, the EU and Israel will shortly sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Israel's participation in the Union's "Horizon 2020" research programme.
The grants will be governed by new EU guidelines, which say Israeli firms and institutions cannot spend a cent of EU money on activity in occupied Palestinian land.Contacts familiar with the MoU text told EUobserver it will include an appendix saying Israel does not recognise the guidelines.But they described the appendix as "futile … a fig leaf."They said the Horizon 2020 "work programme" and "calls for proposals" - which detail implementation - will oblige Israeli entities to comply with the guidelines if they want EU cash.
Crucially, the European Commission will also send Israel a notification on the implementing documents.
The legal notice means Israel will not be able to challenge Horizon 2020 eligibility criteria in the EU court in Luxembourg and Israeli entities will not be able to challenge them in Israeli courts.The EU went some way to help Israel save face.It agreed to the Israeli appendix.It is keeping quiet on the work programme and legal notification issue.EU officials also agreed to let Israel break news of the accord in Israeli media so they could spin it as a "compromise" in which Israel won "concessions."Israel spends a tiny fraction of EU science funds in occupied zones.But after years of verbal criticism, the Horizon 2020 deal represents the Union's first legal blow against settlement expansion.It also creates a precedent for EU grants in other sectors for the next seven years."This agreement will pave the way for Israel's participation in other EU programmes to be launched from 1 January 2014," the two sides said in a joint statement on Tuesday (26 November).

Israeli spin backfires

EU diplomats told this website that Israeli PR made the EU less flexible than it might have been.The EU commission, at one point in the talks, wobbled on the legal notification issue.But a series of leaks by Israeli officials to Israeli media saying EU negotiators had agreed to water down its new regime prompted Arab diplomats, pro-Palestinian NGOs, MEPs and European politicians to deluge EU institutions with complaints.
"The lesson is that even if you are speaking to your domestic audience, your enemy is also reading the press," an EU source told this website."We had an unprecedented number of high-level letters, meetings, which made it very tough for the EU to back down," he added.Other Israeli efforts were equally counterproductive.
On Monday, the eve of the Horizon 2020 deal, Israel sent major general Eitan Dangot to talk to EU diplomats in an EU Council working group on the Middle East.Dangot, the head of Cogat, a branch of the Israeli defence ministry responsible for the occupied territories, showed EU diplomats a slide presentation of Palestinian children with AK47s designed to demonstrate that Palestine does not want a peace deal.
He said Palestinians should be "grateful" for the occupation because Israel builds them schools and other facilities.Dutch and Swedish delegates complained, saying Israel has destroyed dozens of EU-funded projects in Palestine."The more I listen to this kind of thing, the less sympathy I have for the Israeli point of view," another EU diplomat who met Dangot told this website.The EU's hard line on settlements does not mean it is not giving Israel what it wants in other areas, however.

Quid pro quo

Also on Tuesday, EU states, the US and Turkey in the "Western European and Others Group [Weog]" at the UN office in Geneva agreed to let Israel become a fully-fledged member.Weog co-ordinates voting positions and holds internal debates, in a similar way to political groups in the European Parliament.The move comes despite the fact that in 2009 EU states froze plans for a "diplomatic upgrade" in EU-Israel relations, part of which included Weog membership in Geneva.EU foreign relations chief Catherine Ashton told MEPs in September the freeze is still in force.But a diplomat from one EU country told EUobserver that many EU capitals have "forgotten" their 2009 decision."Four years is an eternity in diplomatic life," he said.He noted that Germany pushed for the Weog move in order to compensate Israel for the settlement funding rules.
"It's a clear breach of the upgrade freeze. But there is a broader mindset in which the EU is afraid of its own shadow on Israel, and it has certainly cast a shadow with the new guidelines," he added.An Israeli diplomat told EUobserver: "We don't see any connection between Weog and the guidelines."The German foreign ministry declined to comment.

Merkel softens stance on direct bank recapitalisation

Up until now, Vatican staff did not have to clock in and our of work,” the magazine writes.Panorama says “the aim is to improve the deployment of staff in the Curia and free up more priests for pastoral work. The Vatican had been trying for years to introduce an electronic means of keeping a check on people’s presence at work, but interested parties always opposed this.”This time “the Pope’s decision was backed by the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA), the body that pays Vatican employees’ salaries. Now staff will use the swipe card they have to access the Vatican, to clock in and out of work.”

Iran deal a failure, says ex-national security chief

Yaakov Amidror claims concessions over uranium enrichment ‘meaningless’; Obama reportedly tells Netanyahu ‘to take a breather from his clamorous criticism’

The former head of the Israeli National Security Council took to the pages of The New York Times to rail against the nuclear deal between world powers and Iran, calling the accord a diplomatic failure that missed the mark in diverting Tehran’s nuclear weapons program.In an opinion piece published Thursday, Yaakov Amidror listed the reasons the agreement, signed in Geneva at the beginning of the week, had failed to achieve anything significant.“Iran made only cosmetic concessions to preserve its primary goal, which is to continue enriching uranium,” he wrote. “The agreement represents a failure, not a triumph, of diplomacy.”

According to the terms of the agreement, some of the international sanctions currently imposed on Iran are to be eased, a move Amidror said would bring a rush of foreign business to Iran leading to the collapse of all the economic restrictions against the Islamic Republic.“Might economic relief, reduced isolation and new goodwill lead to greater pressure on the Iranian regime to reach a fuller agreement later?” he asked. “I doubt it… Anyone who has conducted business or diplomatic negotiations knows that you don’t reduce the pressure on your opponent on the eve of negotiations. Yet that is essentially what happened in Geneva.”

Amidror’s remarks in The New York Times came amid heightened tension between the US and Israel over how to thwart Iran’s nuclear program. Netanyahu voiced staunch opposition to compromising with Iran in the run-up to the Geneva talks, and called the deal world powers signed earlier this week a “historic mistake.” Obama, without naming Netanyahu, then criticized the “tough talk and bluster” from critics of the deal.Washington Post columnist David Ignatius wrote Thursday that as negotiations move forward to solidify the interim agreement with Iran, Israel remains a “wild card,” and called Netanyahu’s outspoken dismissal of the agreement “clamorous criticism.”“Obama has asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take a breather from his clamorous criticism and send to Washington a team that can explore with US officials a sound end-state strategy,” Ignatius wrote. “Perhaps the United States and Israel need a back channel, outside the bombastic pressure campaign by Israeli advocates.”The prime minister’s former national security adviser, who stepped down earlier this month, claimed that under the terms of the deal Iran will be able to maintain its thousands of centrifuges and even work on upgrading them just so long at they are not installed in uranium enrichment plants. In practice, that means Iran’s uranium enrichment capability will remain at its current level, meaning it would be available for use whenever Tehran needs it.Israeli sources quoted in a Maariv report Thursday morning contended that the measures Tehran agreed to would only set its back by two weeks should it attempt to manufacture a nuclear weapon. “Should the Iranians decide to ignore the understandings reached with world powers in Geneva, they can enrich the low-enriched uranium they have to military levels and acquire the fissile material necessary for a bomb within just over a month,” the paper reported.To compound the problem further, the agreement signed between Iran and the US, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany does not require Tehran to reduce its stockpiles of 3.5% enriched uranium which, Amidror assessed, is already two-thirds of the way to bomb-making material.“Given the thousands of centrifuges Iran has, the regime can enrich its stock of low-level uranium to weapons-grade quality in a matter of months,” Amidror wrote. “Iran already has enough of this material to make four bombs.”Although the US has the weapons needed to take out Iran’s nuclear program, Western allies find the idea of using them abhorrent, Amidror argued.“While the Obama administration maintains that the military option is still on the table in case Iran does not comply with the new agreement, that threat is becoming less and less credible,” he said.However, without the pressure that sanctions offered, that theoretical military option may become all that stands in the way of nuclear-equipped Iran, he speculated.“The West has surrendered its most effective diplomatic tool in exchange for baseless promises of goodwill. I pray its gamble pays off, for if it does not there will be only one tool left to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.”

Assad lauds Tehran’s ‘resilience’ in nuclear talks

Syrian President Bashar Assad on Wednesday called his Iranian counterpart and congratulated Tehran for its “resilience” in reaching an agreement last weekend with world powers over its unsanctioned nuclear program.According to Syrian state media, Assad spoke with President Hassan Rouhani over the phone and lauded “the success of the Iranian diplomacy in reaching the agreement,” which was “the result of the resilience of the Iranian people, who held onto their rights, and of the Iranian leadership’s commitment to the principles of Iran’s sovereignty.”The report said that Rouhani affirmed Tehran’s support for the Assad regime “in its war against terrorism.”Iranian state-run Press TV confirmed Rouhani’s talk with Assad, quoting him saying that there was “no military solution to the crisis in Syria.”A weekend agreement between the the P5+1 states and Iran temporarily put the brakes on parts of Iran’s disputed nuclear program and allowed for more intrusive international monitoring of its facilities.In return, Iran gained partial relief from stiff economic sanctions and a pledge that no new penalties would be imposed during the six months the parties have to iron out a more comprehensive agreement.According to EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton’s spokesperson, however, the deal has yet to take effect.

250 Hezbollah fighters slain in Damascus, rebels claim

Syrian rebels claimed Thursday that they killed 250 Hezbollah fighters and captured dozens in fierce battles in the suburbs of Damascus, while a missile attack reportedly killed 40 people in the city of Raqqa.

Hebrew media sources, citing the Lebanese al-Mustaqbal newspaper, reported the claim by the Free Syrian Army on Thursday, although the information could not be confirmed by other sources.According to Israel Radio, Hezbollah acknowledged the deaths of three of its fighters, including the nephew of a Lebanese minister, in battles near Damascus, but not the 250 claimed by the rebels.The Local Coordination Committees in Syria reported only 17 deaths in Syria on Thursday.Opposition sources in Syria also made as-yet unsubstantiated claims Thursday that Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces used chemical weapons in the Damascus suburb of Jobar. No deaths were reported.In eastern Syria, Saudi news outlet Al-Arabiya reported that Syrian government forces launched a Scud missile at Raqqa that slammed into a market, killing 40 people and injuring over 200. Dozens more people were believed to be trapped under the rubble after the impact.The latest round of bloodshed in the three-year old civil war comes as the government and the rebels fighting to bring it down tentatively agreed to hold talks in Geneva at the beginning of 2014.However, both sides have already made statements suggesting they have very different expectations from the negotiations. The rebels see the talks as aimed at bringing about the removal of Assad from power, while the government has made it clear it has no intention of stepping down. The opposition has also demanded the establishment of humanitarian corridors to areas that the regime has under siege as a precondition to attending the talks.

Merkel criticises Russia on eve of Vilnius summit

Berlin and Brussels - German Chancellor Angela Merkel has criticised Russia's "Cold War" mentality and said Ukraine can still sign an EU pact, as EU leaders flock east for the Vilnius summit.She is one of 20 or so EU heads of state or government, along with her British and French counterparts, going to the Lithuanian capital on Thursday (28 November) and Friday for the so-called Eastern Partnership event.But Germany's privileged economic relations with Russia, and Merkel's standing as the most powerful leader in the EU, make her words carry special weight.Most of the six Eastern Partnership states - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine - are also attending at the top level.But Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, in a shock u-turn last week, said he will not sign an EU association and free trade treaty, citing Russian threats to cut off trade.His signature was to have been the main outcome of the summit.In a sign of how much EU countries had wanted it to happen, EU sources told EUobserver they were willing to do it even if he kept former PM Yulia Tymoshenko in jail."It means the Eastern Partnership is dead," one EU diplomat told this website."It's an insult to the EU and I don't see any point in Yanukovych going to Vilnius any more," he added.For her part, Merkel played down Ukraine's decision at a pre-Vilnius press briefing in Berlin on Wednesday, however.She accepted Yanukovych's statements - that his decision is "not a rejection of Europe, rather a postponement of the signature" - at face value.She added: "We will continue to offer this agreement."But she reserved harsh words for Russia.With Armenia also backing out of an EU pact due to Russian threats, Merkel said: "The more they [post-Soviet countries] come closer to Europe, the more Russia sees it as distancing themselves from Russia.""The EU and Germany have to talk to Russia. Japan, South Korean military planes defy China's new defense zone

TOKYO/SEOUL (Reuters) - Japanese and South Korean military aircraft flew through disputed air space over the East China Sea without informing China, officials said on Thursday, challenging a new Chinese air defense zone that has increased regional tensions and sparked concerns of an unintended clash.The move came after Tokyo's close ally Washington defied China's demand that airplanes flying through its unilaterally announced zone identify themselves to Chinese authorities, flying two unarmed B-52 bombers over the islands on Tuesday without informing Beijing.Tensions have ratcheted up since Beijing's weekend announcement of the zone that includes the skies over islands at the heart of a feud between Japan and China, and its demand that planes flying in the area first notify Chinese authorities.Japan and the United States have sharply criticized the move, which some experts said was aimed not only at chipping away at Tokyo's control of the islands, known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China, but also at challenging U.S. dominance in the region.The United States does not take a position on the sovereignty of the islands but recognizes Tokyo's administrative control and has assured Japan that the U.S.-Japan security pact covers them.The developments are expected to dominate U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's visit to Japan, China and South Korea next week.Also on Thursday, China rejected South Korea's demand for the repeal of the zone, but appeared to soften its demand that commercial aircraft tell its military authorities of any plans to transit the area. Japan's two biggest airlines have already begun defying that order."The East China Sea Air Defense Identification zone is not aimed at normal international flights. BEIJING REJECTS SEOUL'S DEMAND
A South Korean official also said a navy reconnaissance plane had flown over a submerged rock in the area claimed by both Beijing and Seoul, and that the flights would continue.The rock, called Ieodo in Korea and Suyan Rock in China, is controlled by South Korea, which maintains a maritime research station built on it.
Asked about the South Korean flight, Chinese spokesman Qin only said that Beijing was aware of it.

Saudi Arabia Considers Nuclear Weapons After Iran’s Geneva Deal

• As Middle Eastern nations attempted to elbow each other aside in their efforts to offer encouraging statements about the recently-concluded nuclear talks between Iran and six world powers on Sunday, Saudi Arabia took its time. More than a day later the cabinet offered its own pallid take: “If there is good will, then this agreement could represent a preliminary step toward a comprehensive solution to the Iranian nuclear program.” Behind the gritted-teeth delivery there lurked an almost palpable sense of frustration, betrayal and impotence as Saudi Arabia watched its foremost foe gain ground in a 34-year competition for influence in the region.

As discussions leading up to the historic agreement in Geneva unfurled over the past several months, Saudi did its utmost to express its discontent, lobbying behind closed doors for greater restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program and rejecting at the last minute a long-sought seat on the United Nations Security Council. Saudi officials even threatened to get their own nuclear weapons; just before the talks concluded the Saudi Ambassador to London, Prince Mohammed bin Nawaf bin Abdulaziz, told The Times of London: “We are not going to sit idly by and receive a threat there and not think seriously how we can best defend our country and our region.”“It’s as if Saudi Arabia and Iran suddenly traded places,” marvels Riyadh and Istanbul-based Saudi foreign affairs commentator Abdullah Al Shamri. “Now [U.S. President] Obama and [Iranian President] Rouhani are talking on the phone while their foreign ministers shake hands, and it’s Saudi Arabia that is throwing the temper tantrums at the U.N., shouting about nuclear weapons and trying to show the world that they are angry.”Saudi Arabia’s frustration with the Iranian deal has little to do with nuclear weapons, and everything to do with insecurity, says F. Gregory Gause III, a professor of Middle East studies at the University of Vermont. “It comes from a profound and exaggerated fear that a nuclear deal with Iran is a prelude to an American-Iranian geopolitical agreement that in essence leaves Iran as the dominant power in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq.” The U.S., of course, is unlikely to turn the keys to the region over to Iran anytime soon, but the Saudis are not entirely wrong in thinking the Obama Administration wants to disengage from the region, says Gause. The U.S. “backed off in Syria, it’s not taking an active role in Iraq, and it does want better relations with Iran.” From this, he says, the Saudis have pieced together a convincing narrative of abandonment that is causing them to lash out in unpredictable ways.As the first round of nuclear talks got under way on Nov. 7 in Geneva, select leaks to the Western media suggested that Saudi Arabia was planning to buy nuclear weapons from Pakistan. A month before, former Israeli military intelligence chief Amos Yadlin told a conference in Sweden that if Iran got a bomb, “the Saudis will not wait one month. They already paid for the bomb, they will go to Pakistan and bring what they need to bring.”There may be truth to Yadlin’s comments. Saudi Arabia has backed and at times helped fund Pakistan’s nuclear program, according to proliferation experts. (The program became public in 1998.) That doesn’t mean that acquiring a nuclear bomb is as easy as shipping it across the Arabian Sea. Saudi, as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, would risk global reproach, possible sanctions and the launch of a regional arms race if it had its own bomb. A more likely scenario, says Gary Samore, Obama’s former arms control advisor and Director for Research at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University, would be some sort of pact that could see Pakistani nuclear weapons moved to Saudi Arabia. “Even if U.S. diplomacy fails and Iran gets nuclear weapons, Pakistan isn’t just going to hand over nuclear weapons; it’s more likely that Pakistan would station forces in Saudi, and those forces will have the ability to deploy nuclear weapons from Saudi soil,”­— much like American troops are able to do in Europe, with out contravening those country’s non-proliferation treaties.Still, such a pact would have significant drawbacks, points out Gause. Pakistan may not be willing to attack its neighbor Iran for fear of repercussions, and it would be a death-knell for the U.S.-Saudi friendship. “In terms of putting at risk relations with the United States, a Pakistani nuclear pact would be the most provocative Saudi foreign policy decision since the 1973 oil embargo,” says Gause.  That might serve Saudi pique at being sidelined by its old ally America as that ally pursues a lasting deal with Iran, but it would be ultimately self-defeating. Better for Saudi in the long run would be a deal that brings Iran closer to the U.S., and further from a bomb.

Let me begin by saying that the deal the U.S. struck with Iran on November 24 is so criminally stupid that mobs with torches and pitchforks should be surrounding the White House and Department of State demanding that the President and Secretary of State resign.
How many times does the United States have to make really bad deals with really bad nations? And then call it progress!
In 1994, former President Clinton announced that a deal with North Korea had agreed to “freeze the major elements of its nuclear program.” A new round of talks was scheduled—in Geneva—to dot the i’s and cross the t’s. Virtually the same language was used by President Obama in his late evening announcement of a fundamentally useless, but extremely dangerous agreement with Iran.
Worse than accepting Iran’s deception, it is as if Obama knew nothing of the North Korean deal that subsequently resulted in its development of a nuclear weapon despite some costly bribery exacted for promises it never intended to keep. The worst part of this is Obama’s deception of Congress and the American people. Efforts to grant Iran the status of a new nuclear power had been secretly going on for a year behind the back of Congress.
On hearing of the deal, Rep. Mike Rogers said “That’s the one thing the whole world was trying to stop them from doing,” referring to the permission granted to continue enriching uranium. “We made this mistake in Pakistan. We made this mistake in North Korea. History is a great judge here and great teacher. Why would you make the same mistake to a nation that will proliferate a nuclear arms race in the Middle East if they are successful at getting a nuclear weapon?”
It is important to keep in mind that not just the U.S. is a signatory to this agreement, but also the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia and China. It was facilitated by the European Union. The lessons of history were totally ignored. The sanctions imposed by the United Nations on Iran were ignored.
For years many have taken comfort in the knowledge that, in the past, Israel destroyed the nuclear reactors that were being built in Iraq and more recently in Syria. An attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities was assumed to have the support of U.S. military power in the event that Iran would retaliate either directly or through its terrorist proxies, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.
It is clear now that Obama has abandoned Israel as well as Saudi Arabia which also regards Iran as its enemy. Obama has embraced America’s enemy since the Islamic revolution in 1979. He has not brought us closer to peace. He has brought the world closer to World War Three.
I am not a military strategist, but one need not be to understand Israel’s peril or the limits on its ability to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, many of which are underground or heavily defended.
Here are some comparisons:

• Iran has a population of 78,868,711. Israel has a population of 7,765,700.
• Of these, those fit for military service are 39,556,497 in Iran and 2,511,190 in Israel.
• Comparing active military personnel, Iran has 545,000 and Israel has 187,000.
• Iran has 650,000 in military reserves. Israel has 565,000.
• Iran’s annual defense budget (in USD) is $10,687,000,000 and Israel’s is $15,209,000,000.

The comparison of their military capabilities is equally daunting. A sobering analysis is offered on the website of the Jewish Virtual Library.Even if Israel were to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, it would also have to fend off massive rocket attacks from Hezbollah and Hamas.What defies Obama’s reasoning is Iran’s long history of attacks on the West. It has specialized in taking hostages, initially in Lebanon from 1984 through 1992. It seized the American embassy in 1979 and held American diplomats for 444 days. It holds an American cleric as this is being written.In 2011, the U.S. discovered that Iran had conceived and funded a plot to assassinate Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the U.S. in Washington, D.C. At the time, the State Department said that the thwarted plot “underscored anew Iran’s interest in using international terrorism—including the United States—to further its foreign policy goals.”Obama’s ability to thwart Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its intent to become a Middle East hegemon through diplomacy does not exist.A race to acquire nuclear arms has begun in the region where Israel and Pakistan already have them, as does India and China. Saudi Arabia has announced its intent to secure nuclear weapons.One can only conclude that this interim agreement is a repeat of the appeasement that occurred in Munich when European nations sought a similar agreement with the Nazi regime. The lessons of history are unforgiving.

Obama adviser urges Israel not to strike at Iran

The US on Tuesday urged Israel not to strike at Iran so long as the international community’s diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis over Tehran’s rogue nuclear program continue.Speaking two days after world powers signed an interim deal with Iran in Geneva, and in the wake of blistering criticism of the deal from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Barack Obama’s close aide and deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes encouraged Israel to give the negotiations a chance, and warned that military action could be counterproductive.Asked in an interview with Israel’s Channel 10 news whether the US was asking Israel to refrain from launching military action to thwart Iran’s march to the bomb, Rhodes said first that “Israel’s a sovereign nation and will make its own decisions about its self-defense.”He went on, though, to set out the US argument to Israel for refraining from military action: “Our case to Israel will be: Let’s give the negotiations a chance to succeed. A military strike has no guarantee of eliminating the nuclear infrastructure or what they [the Iranians] already know how to do, and could incentivize them to break out” to the bomb.

Rhodes said the US was keeping its own military option on the table, “but we want to see if we can get this done diplomatically.” It was clearly preferable, he said, to thwart Iran without a resort to force, “at the negotiating table.”Still, he added again, “the prime minister of Israel has to make his own decisions.”

Rhodes acknowledged that the relationship between the US and Israeli leaderships over the handling of the Iran crisis was in one of its more strained periods, but said there had been “ups and downs” in the past and he was confident that the two sides would “weather” the storm.He also said the administration did not consider that “the time was right” for Congress to impose new sanctions on Iran. Among other factors, such a move could divide the P5+1 countries, Rhodes claimed. Still, he noted, “Israel can express its view, of course, as a sovereign nation.”Rhodes said he thought it unlikely that Iran would be stripped of all elements of its nuclear activity in the way that Libya had been. In separate comments to Channel 2 news, he also said that, in a permanent accord, provided Iran met all of the international community’s concerns over its program, it might be allowed to retain “a limited enrichment capacity.”

OVDA AIR BASE, southern Israel — One day after the Israeli military option against Iran was likely frozen along with the Iranian regime’s march toward a bomb, the Israel Air Force on Monday hosted its first multilateral air drill, Blue Flag, fighting a common enemy along with the US, Greece and Italy.Standing alongside an F-16 together with the ambassadors of Italy and Greece, US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro said that the joint exercise offers “the opportunity to drill real world scenarios so that in the event we would have to operate together we have the ability to do so.” He also took pains to clarify, however, that “Blue Flag is pretending realistic training scenarios, [and is] not tied to any specific events.”The Israel Air Force has been drilling extensively in recent years for the possibility that it will be called upon to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities. Blue Flag, Shapiro was making plain, is emphatically not part of any such preparation.

The ambassadors, pilots and IAF commanders were careful, indeed, not to discuss Iran’s nuclear program, the interim deal reached early Sunday morning in Geneva, and the glaring differences of opinion between Washington and Jerusalem.

Instead, it was all aeronautics and niceties. A senior IAF officer, who was not cleared to speak with his name and rank, said the drill, which shut down two-thirds of Israel’s skies and included 60 fighter aircraft in the air, simulated a multilateral strike against an enemy country equipped with a modern air force, an active air defense and aerial terror capacities.Israel, this officer said, is very different than Europe in that there is ample space to fly low to the ground and to drop live ordinance. As opposed to the US, he added, a leisurely left or right turn from Ovda Air Base, in the southern corner of the Arava desert, would put a pilot in Egyptian or Jordanian air space.“Just getting 60 airplanes up in the air, off of three runways, in English, is already complicated,” he said.The Blue Flag drill, which the IAF called “a strategic asset for both the IDF and the Western world,” is the largest international air drill ever held in Israel. Lasting two weeks overall, it moved into the joint aerial training stage on Monday, which features two sorties per day for four days and places a different commander at the helm of each mission. “That way we see the solution that each commander provides,” said the senior IAF officer.

He said that one lesson the IAF has already adopted as a result of these sort of drills, which Israel began joining in earnest only during the last decade, was in vocabulary. In the past, he said, Israeli pilots, a loquacious bunch in his rendering, would spend far too much time over the airwaves describing incoming enemy aircraft. Describing one low and one high and one on either flank could take 30 seconds of air time, he said.“You know how the Americans describe that?” he asked several reporters. “Champagne.”Planes coming in a straight line, he added, are reported simply as “Ladder.”The IAF, he said, has recently adopted the “entire American dictionary” of radio call signs.Noting Israel’s cooperation with Greece, the senior officer said that, despite all, he missed Israel’s cooperation with Turkey. “I’d be very, very happy to go back to those training drills in Turkey,” he said, referring to the NATO member’s Anatolian Eagle drill from which Israel has been barred in recent years amid strained bilateral relations.A US F-16E fighter pilot, in from a base in the UK, praised the Israeli pilots as “great aviators.” The biggest challenge, though, said Captain Bara, who gave only his call name, “is how to communicate effectively.”He meant while flying at 1,000 mph in a tight formation. On Monday two US B-52 bombers flew through airspace claimed by China on Saturday as an "air-defense identification zone." The area includes a highly sensitive disputed island chain claimed by Japan and China, as well as Taiwan.A US official on Tuesday confirmed that the two bombers, which flew from and returned to Guam on a routine exercise, did not identify themselves as per China's new demands, reports CNN. After China's announcement of the new zone the US said it would not recognize the move and criticized it as highly dangerous.The exercise, conducted by unarmed aircraft, proceeded "without incident," with the bombers spending "less than an hour" in the zone recently claimed by China.China's unilateral declaration of the "air-defense zone" is particularly troubling since the area contains the island chain known in Japan as Senkaku, and in China as Diaoyu.Tensions have been rife between the two nations as China has repeatedly sent ships and aircraft to violate the territorial waters and air of the islands that are under Japanese control.
Those tensions have threatened to spill over into war on several occassions.Japan scrambled F-15 fighter jets in January when a Chinese propeller plane approached Japanese airspace over the Senkaku islands, in response to which China sent J-10 fighter planes to monitor the Japanese jets.Should tensions in the South China Sea spill over into a war, the US is obligated to militarily defend Japan by the two nations' joint security treaty signed in 1951.

Unusual ice circle forms in North Dakota river

(AP) — When George Loegering saw a large spinning circle of ice in the Sheyenne River while out hunting with relatives, the retired engineer couldn't believe his eyes."At first I thought, no way! It was surreal," Loegering, 73, said Tuesday of the large ice disk he witnessed Saturday. "You looked at it and you thought, how did it do that?"Then his engineering background kicked in. He calculated the disk's diameter to be about 55 feet, took photos and videos of it and then turned to the Internet for more information about what he, his brother-in-law and nephew had seen."It's not an unknown phenomenon, but it is relatively rare," said Loegering, who lives in rural Casselton, about 20 miles west of Fargo.Allen Schlag, a National Weather Service hydrologist in Bismarck, and Greg Gust, a weather service meteorologist in Grand Forks, said a combination of cold, dense air last weekend and an eddy in the river likely caused the disk.
"It's actually quite beautiful," Schlag said.

The cold, dense air — the air pressure Saturday in nearby Fargo was a record high for the city for the month of November, according to Gust — turned the river water into ice, but since the water was relatively warm it didn't happen all at once. Floating bits of ice got caught in the eddy and started to spin in a circle."It's not a continuous sheet of ice," Schlag said. "If you were to throw a grapefruit-size rock on it, it would go through. It's not a solid piece of ice — it's a collection of ice cubes."Loegering said the spinning disk had frozen up but was still visible in the river."I'm not sure how long it was there (spinning)," he said. "It had to be quite a long time. If you look at the picture, you can see growth rings on the disk."Schlag said he was surprised by the size of the ice circle, which he said would be more likely on a larger river such as the Missouri.

The Taking of America One Two Three

In late 1974, the movie The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, based on a novel of the same name, was released. The main plot involves four men, using colors as codenames, boarding the subway at Pelham station in New York at 1:23 pm., (hence the name) where they ultimately take a subway car full of hostages. They demand one million dollars or they will begin killing hostages.

Today, America appears to be in a similar position. The United States is that subway car and we, as citizens, are the hostages under the control of a small group of people. The difference, however, is that our intended fate will be decidedly different than the hostages in the movie. Our captors simply want us dead.
It is interesting to note that earlier that same year, an article appeared in the Council on Foreign Relations quarterly publication Foreign Affairs titled “The Hard Road to World Order.” It was written by Richard N. Gardner who wrote the following:

“In short, the “house of world order” will have to be built from the bottom up rather than from the top down. It will look like a great “booming, buzzing confusion,” to use William James’ famous description of reality, but an end run around national sovereignty, eroding it piece by piece, will accomplish much more than the old-fashioned frontal assault. Of course, for political as well as administrative reasons, some of these specialized arrangements should be brought into an appropriate relationship with the central institutions of the U.N. system, but the main thing is that the essential functions be performed.”

To fully appreciate and understand the context very last scene of the 1974 version of the movie, one must watch the entire film. So it is with the current events taking place in America today. You will not understand the context of certain events taking place without seeing the entire picture, or the “big picture.” CFR member Richard Gardner, who joined the Columbia faculty in 1957 and was a professor at Columbia Law School through 2012, the alma mater of Barry Soetoro, a/k/a Barack Hussein Obama, provides an overview of sorts for “The Taking of America One Two Three” in his 1974 article.
Nonetheless, let’s look further into “The Taking of America One Two Three.”
Plot summary (Caution: contains spoilers)
Against the backdrop of a Constitutional Republic known as the United States, the story begins by a rapid historical recap of the founding of a nation, the creation of an immutable document known as the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights, and slows in the early years of twentieth century. Then a small group of powerful men, aided and abetted by government insiders and the press, conduct an “end around” our national sovereignty and capture the nation’s economy through the creation of central banks and an income tax that lines the pockets of the bankers, despite reports to the contrary.This same group, operating under the codename “The Committee of 300” as meticulously documented through the extensive research of Dr. John Coleman,  becomes more entrenched in nearly every aspect of American government and society. Through their wealth and power, they influence U.S. politics to the extent that U.S. presidents are first selected before they are elected, as are the Secretaries of State appointed by each president. This “Committee of 300” creates and nurtures sub-organizations, such as the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission, and many others. Like a destructive virus, these cretins infect the host bodies of our political, financial, corporate, religious and societal institutions. This infection causes national immunodeficiency, or the state in which our national immune system, the U.S. Constitution, is compromised.
Political leaders who associate themselves with the right-left paradigm enter the scene dressed as physicians, posing as knowledgeable and helpful saviors, pretend to treat this national infection. (Note: the audience who has seen the plot from the beginning and read the book on which the movie is based realize that these leaders are the actual captors. They know the history, and are not fooled. Others in attendance are fully entranced by the action onscreen and don’t understand the twists and turns of the subplots).The film speeds through the world wars and police actions, the assassination of JFK, the Watergate “scandal,” and begins to become more intense with scenes from the opening shots of Desert Storm, the passage of the NAFTA and GATT treaties, the repealing of the Glass-Steagall Act and the related consequences, and stops momentarily on September 10, 2001. At that point, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is shown announcing that $2.3 trillion of the defense department budget cannot be accounted for, followed by scenes of the carnage the following day.From there, scenes of attacks against Afghanistan and Iraq play out under George W. Bush, who happens to be the son of former President George H.W. Bush. Amid the main plot are numerous complex subplots that relate to previous scenes, ultimately progressing to one of the leading characters being selected and ostensibly elected as the 44th president of the United States under mysterious circumstances.
This character is double-billed as Barack Hussein Obama and Barry Soetoro, a man of questionable eligibility to hold the office under Article II, Section I, Clause 5 of the U.S. Constitution. An investigation into this character’s constitutional eligibility is thwarted at every turn by individuals in power, taking their orders from the now fully functional shadow government answerable to the global elitists, previously billed as “The Committee of 300.” Even the “good guys” clamor that this character’s eligibility is nothing more than a distraction, and soon convince many that they are racists, bigots or at the very least, conspiracy nuts for even mentioning this character’s origins.But it’s not just the origins of this character that is of concern, but his allegiance to the United States. The importance of this problem becomes much clearer as this Soetoro/Hussein character surprises even his earlier supporters by continuing an aggressive war posture, increasing domestic surveillance, and generally running the country by fiat.The final scenes of the movie are tense, where the Obama/Soetoro character is shown filling his inner circle with Marxists and Islamic terrorists, nationalizing a large portion of the country’s economy and consolidating immense power by overseeing the implementation of national health care, purging the military, expanding national surveillance, equipping a federalized army with billions of rounds of ammunition, destabilizing the Middle East, and pushing for a U.S. Senate rule change that effectively permits a coup of the judiciary. Meanwhile, much of the supporting cast, many dressed in white hats and appearing to oppose this increased tyranny, are exposed for who they are and their allegiance to a globalist agenda through their associations with “The Committee of 300” and its associated groups.There is cinematic chaos as scenes of various twentieth century tyrants flash across the screen between scenes of Obama/Soetoro gradually being elevated to the position of a tyrant himself.
