Turkish Prime Minister: Israel Behind Egypt Coup

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's latest comments entirely consistent with a history of anti-Semitic remarks and conspiracy theories.-By Ari Soffer-First Publish: 8/20/2013, 12:34 PM-Israelnationalnews

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Israel is behind the removal of former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi by the Egyptian military.
“Israel is behind the coup in Egypt, we have evidence,” Erdogan declared to members of his party meeting in Ankara on Tuesday, according to the Turkish Today's Zaman.Erdogan reportedly cited an unnamed French intellectual who he claims said in 2011 that the Muslim Brotherhood won’t be in power even if they are elected because “democracy is not the ballot box.” Erdogan stressed that the intellectual was Jewish, the implications of which are consistent with a long string of anti-Semitic comments and conspiracy theories issued by the Islamist Prime Minister, whose AKP party is sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood
Last month, in reference to both the upheaval in Egypt and anti-government protests in his own country, Erdogan stated cryptically that:“The origin of the incidents in both countries is the same. I will declare what that origin is when the time comes. It is saved in our memory cards."The previous month he claimed that “those against whom we said ‘one minute’ are now delighted,” at the unrest in Turkey. Erdogan was referencing his reaction to Israeli President Shimon Peres during the 2009 Davos Forum, in which he uttered "one minute" before storming off stage. That incident preceded a serious diplomatic crisis between the two countries, as Edogan's Islamist government sided with Hamas during Israel's Operation Cast Lead counter-terrorism operation.Erdogan added that "even if not in such a manner, we had foreseen these events as a series of conspiracies three months ago. We had received some intelligence reports."But Erdogan and his associates have made far more overtly anti-Semitic statements as well.Erdogan's Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay previously claimed that the “Jewish Diaspora” was behind the "Gezi Square" protests in Turkey.
In 1998, the Jewish Policy Research reported that Erdogan, who was serving as mayor of Istanbul at the time, stated that: “the Jews have begun to crush the Muslims in Palestine, in the name of Zionism. Today, the image of the Jews is no different than that of the Nazis.” Apart from anti-Semitism, Erdogan - the leader of a NATO-member state and a man US President Obama has described as one of the few leaders with whom he has developed bonds of trust - has also made overtly racist remarks about black people. In June, Commentator Magazine reported Erdogan's criticism of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the leader of the center-left and secular Republican Peoples Party (CHP).Using an offensive term for black people ("Zenci") Erdogan said:“Kılıçdaroğlu is striving every bit he can to raise himself from the level of a black person to the level of a white man.”

Samaria Women: Arabs Harass Us on Buses

Taking the bus home from work has become a nightmare, women tell Transport Minister.

A group of women who live in Samaria have sent letters to Minister of Transport, Yisrael Katz, in which they complain that using public transportation has become a nightmarish experience, because of harassment by Arabs.Arutz Sheva has obtained copies of letters sent to the Transport Minister and to the mayor of Ariel, in which women complain of sexual harassment on bus lines that go from central Israel to Samaria destinations
One woman, whom we will identify as Ayin, wrote: "Last Sunday, I rode the 186 bus from Petach Tikva to Ariel as I always do, on my way back from work. A few stops after mine, several Arabs got on. One sat next to me at the front of the bus, behind the driver. The drive takes about 50 minutes at night. These were 50 minutes of suffering!"Ayin, who was seated next to the window, goes on to relate her experience."In the course of the drive, the Arab who sat next to me… began putting his hands on me. Time after time, I threw his hand off me and told him to stop. I tried to move away on the seat and get further from him but nothing made any difference to him and he kept at it. I felt frozen and the fear took away my ability to get up from the chair and complain to the driver about that Arab."Ayin says: "After that drive, which seemed to go on forever, when the bus finally arrived at the station at Ariel Junction, the Arab got off the bus. A feeling of liberation surged through me, and at the same time, tears began to flow. It all came out in a burst of tears."
"How can one person demean and humiliate another person and hurt the other person's self esteem and privacy, in just one second?" Ayin asks, describing "sensations and feelings of emotional pain that will remain in the heart forever.""Please, esteemed minister, help me prevent the next case. Do not let another woman undergo the same humiliation as I did."The mother of one of the young women who were harassed wrote the minister about an incident on Route 86 from Petach Tikva to Ariel, involving her daughter and Arabs. "The Palestinian who sat next to my daughter began getting close to her and touching her leg. My daughter froze and pressed herself to the window, but she had a difficult time responding or asking for help. At around the Gitai junction he put his hand on her leg and got off the bus."The problem is especially grievous with buses run by the Afikim company, the mother says, and the drivers who let in Arab workers are Arabs themselves. Her daughter complained about the incident to her father, who is a driver at Afikim himself, but when the father approached the Arab driver involved, he responded with near violence.Another mother writes: "My daughter got on the bus and an Arab sat next to her when there was enough room on the bus [for him to sit elsewhere]. He pretended to fall asleep on her and rested his head on her. She told him several times [to stop] and he repeated it each time."The women added that often, Arabs who get off the bus ask the driver to open the luggage compartment in the back of the bus, and make off with luggage that is not theirs.
The Minister of Transport's bureau said in response: "The minister is aware of the problem and is taking vigorous action to solve it by a meaningful enlargement of the fleet of buses that drive to and from the city."

Prosor: Israel Won't Stand By as Assad Fires Mortars

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations says Israel is losing its patience with the repeated Syrian violations of the ceasefire.-By Elad Benari-First Publish: 8/20/2013, 6:15 AM-Israelnationalnews

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ron Prosor, hinted on Monday that Israel was losing its patience with the repeated Syrian violations of the 1974 ceasefire between the two countries.
Prosor sent a letter of complaint to the Security Council after the latest incident on Saturday, when the Israeli army fired into Syria after shells from the neighboring country hit the Israeli side of the Golan Heights. The Israeli attack demolished a Syrian military position.Israel, wrote Prosor in his letter, will not stand idly by while "Assad’s terrorist regime fires mortars at Israeli citizens."Prosor stressed in the complaint the "blatant violation on Syria’s part of the disengagement agreement of 1974." He added, "Israel has sent repeated warnings and warned the Security Council that such provocations will not be accepted by Israel. It should not be expected Israel will stand by while the terrorist regime of Assad rains down mortar shells on Israeli citizens."The Golan has been tense since the beginning of the civil war in Syria more than two years ago, but so far there have only been minor flare-ups as Syrian small arms fire or mortar rounds hit the Israeli side, prompting an occasional Israeli response.Earlier this month, gunfire from the Syrian side of the border hit close to an IDF patrol in the northern Golan Heights. There were no injuries or damages. Two weeks before this incident, fire was opened at an IDF patrol near Tel Fares in the southern Golan Heights, after the troops identified two Syrians who entered an abandoned military outpost located east of the border fence.
The troops were searching the area when they were fired upon. None of the soldiers was hurt and no damage was caused. The soldiers returned fire.Prosor recently told the Security Council that it was time to condemn the constant spillover of the conflict in Syria into Israel.“Unequivocally condemn the firing,” he urged the Council. “The Syrian government systematically violates the separation of forces agreement, which could bring the region to instability."Meanwhile, Israel continues to receive wounded Syrians from the country’s civil war. On Monday night, two more wounded Syrians were brought to the Ziv Medical Center in the city of Tzfat. One of the victims brought to the hospital is a 24-year-old man whose condition was serious after suffering gunshot wounds to his pelvis. The second victim, 39, was listed in moderate condition. On Sunday night, two wounded Syrians were brought by IDF soldiers to the Ziv Medical Center. The two were listed in moderate condition, with one suffering from a bullet wound to his stomach and the other from a fractured hand.More than 140 wounded Syrians have so far been treated at Israeli hospitals, 25 of them in the last week alone, according to figures published by Kol Yisrael radio.

Islamists Plan to Attack Israeli, Jewish Targets Worldwide

Islamist groups are actively planning attacks against Jewish and Israeli targets abroad, the Anti-Terror Unit of the Prime Minister's office said Monday.
Specifically, Israelis were warned to stay away from Sinai, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, a number of countries in Central Africa, and Turkey. The Turkish threat was termed “potential and ongoing,” the Unit said.Turkey has slowly but surely become a destination for Israelis in the past year, as relations between Jerusalem and Ankara have thawed somewhat. In July, 4% of all Israelis who took vacations abroad went to Turkey, Tourism Ministry officials said.In Sinai, the threat was termed “concrete and very high,” as was the threat in Chechnya and southern Thailand, bordering Malaysia. Visitors to Egypt and Jordan faced a “concrete and solid” threat. Trips to Morocco that were unnecessary should be postponed, the message said.Hezbollah and Iran would likely be behind the attacks, the Unit said, as they seek revenge against Israel for the deaths of Hezbollah terrorists and Iranian nuclear scientists, both of which they claim are Israel's doing.Israelis visiting Europe and other areas were warned to act with caution and attempt to stay out of the way of areas of unrest, and to consult with Israeli embassies and consulates for ongoing updates. In addition, Israelis who are in Europe or other “safe” places are advised to make changes to their travel routes and daily habits on a regular basis, to discourage terrorists operating there from attempting to kidnap them.

A meeting at the home of Shas spiritual head Rabbi Ovadia Yosef may signal a lessening of tensions between the Sephardic hareidi party and the religious Zionist party, Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home).
Maariv/NRG reported Tuesday that the venerated rabbi hosted Bayit Yehudi MK, Rabbi Eliyahu Ben Dahan, at his home, on Sunday. After spending some time in conversation with each other without anyone else present, they were joined by Shas Chairman MK Aryeh Deri, and by the new Sephardic Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Ovadia's son, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef.Rabbi Ben Dahan is in charge of the Chief Rabbinate as Deputy Religions Minister. He was also Director of the Rabbinical Courts for about 20 years. A meeting between Rabbi Ben Dahan and Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef on Thursday reportedly defused some of the initial tension between Shas and Bayit Yehudi, which peaked during election season, when Rabbi Ovadia called Bayit Yehudi "a home of gentiles."Another Shas rabbi had called religious Zionists "Amalek" in the presence of Rabbi Ovadia. After they found common ground in their meeting on Thursday, it was decided that Rabbi Ben Dahan would be invited to Rabbi Ovadia's home.Rabbi Ovadia reportedly told Rabbi Ben Dahan that he actually likes – or loves – the Bayit Yehudi party and its supporters."I have nothing against the party," he said, and expressed his wish to turn over a new leaf in relations with the party.

PARTS 1 TO 5  OF VIDEO
http://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/ctv-investigates-behind-prison-walls-1.1221166
Part 1: Questions raised over conditions inside Kitchener prison

Kitchener’s Grand Valley Institution for Women has been making headlines recently for the in-custody death of Ashley Smith in 2007.But aside from the details pertinent to Smith’s death released at a public inquiry, little is known about what actually goes on inside the ominous-looking building on Homer Watson Boulevard.
“What happened to Ashley Smith is horrific, but it’s not as unusual as people would like to think,” says Ann Hansen, a former inmate.Opened in 1997 as one of five facilities designed to replace the Kingston Prison for Women, Grand Valley was – and still is – the largest women’s prison in Canada. It was originally designed to be different from its predecessor up the 401.In the Kingston prison’s 66-year history, it was subject to 13 commissions and inquiries relating to its treatment of prisoners – a legacy Grand Valley was determined to avoid.Rev. Con O’Mahony was at the prison the day it opened, a day he recalls as hopeful and reflective.
As both a volunteer chaplain and the man tasked with hiring the prison’s full-time chaplain, O’Mahony has made many return trips to the prison, and now says the hope and reflection have long since dissipated.
“Most residents of Kitchener-Waterloo, if they saw the current housing conditions in the institution, would be horrified,” he says.Overcrowding is an issue broached repeatedly by those who have been inside the prison, either visiting one of the approximately 200 women housed there or behind bars themselves. One of those women is Ann Hansen, who was sentenced to life in prison for her role in the “Squamish Five”, a group of B.C. activists who were responsible for multiple Canadian bombings in the 1980s.She spent eight years at the Kingston Prison for Women, otherwise known as P4W, before being released on parole.Parole breaches led her to two stints in Grand Valley, where she says the biggest difference was the Kitchener facility’s maximum security unit – something that had never been part of the Kingston prison.“When you have a maximum security unit, it ends up that you have all the people who have sort of emotional and mental health issues also in the max security unit,” she tells CTV.“Every pod you’ve got, out of five people, maybe two of them have very extreme emotional and mental health issues and aren’t really being treated.”The warden of Grand Valley Institution for Women, which is run on an annual budget of $30 million of taxpayer money, refused repeated requests to allow CTV cameras inside the prison and to answer questions on camera.

Part 2: Maximum security inmates report 'tension' in Kitchener prison

Tucked inside the largest women’s prison in Canada is a series of hallways never seen by outsiders and dubbed “the prison within a prison” by the few who have lived within. The maximum security unit at Kitchener’s Grand Valley Institution for Women houses murderers, rapists, abductors and the rest of society’s most dangerous women.Inmates placed in the unit are locked in their cells, monitored 24/7 and only allowed to leave the area – for visits, medical reasons or their one hour a day in the prison yard – if wearing shackles. The cells, which contain nothing more than a bed, a toilet and a window, are often double-booked. There are currently 15 women housed in maximum security at Grand Valley, but the number regularly fluctuates.“You’ve got all these people compressed into this little place with the guards watching constantly,” says Ann Hansen, one of the few women to have spent time there.“It’s very difficult to describe the level of tension that goes on in there.”Hansen was one of the “Squamish Five”, convicted of a string of politically motivated bombings. She was handed a life sentence, but after spending eight years in the old Kingston Prison for Women, was released on parole. When she breached the terms of the parole – by screening a political film at a library – she was arrested, shackled and taken to Grand Valley’s maximum security unit.
The former prisoner describes the unit as an ecosystem where guards are given ultimate power, irrespective of legality. In one instance, she recalls an incident where a guard charged at an inmate.“The guard thought one of the prisoners had swore at her using the F-word,” she says.Everyone was ordered into their cells, but the situation quickly escalated to the point where an emergency response team was called in.“I think there could have been many other ways for the situation to be de-escalated than calling the ERT and pepper spraying,” she says.Other concerns are voiced by another inmate, who cannot be named. She and her sister were convicted of drugging and drowning their mother in a bathtub 10 years ago.“I hesitate to complain about food because you’re not supposed to have luxuries while in prison, however I went anemic when I was in maximum security, which to me really shows there was a deficiency,” she tells CTV.Another inmate, Nicole Kish, has been shedding light on what happens inside the maximum security unit through a blog her family is posting for her as Kish serves a life sentence for second-degree murder.Kish calls the unit an “incubator of human suffering” where guards mock her for attempting to pursue an education while behind bars.“Never does a week go by where I am not made fun of or condescended for attempting to take university-level courses, which I am neither financially nor structurally supported in doing,” she writes.“I am what they consider a ‘low-maintenance prisoner’. ‘High-needs prisoners’ hear far worse from staff regularly. I have even heard staff tell women to commit suicide.”

Part 3: Kitchener prison's 'cottages' not immune to problems, former inmates say

Most inmates at Kitchener’s Grand Valley Institution for Women never see the prison’s maximum security wing, but that doesn’t mean they’re particularly happy about the conditions in the rest of the facility.
Former inmates talk about easy access to drugs, overbearing guards and little of the mental health assistance many inmates desperately need. Many of the 150 prisoners residing in minimum and medium security areas of the prison live in housing units known as “cottages”.The cottages don’t have the bars or shackles of the maximum-security wing, but do come with their own problems – including overcrowding.New units are being built to help deal with the problem, but currently, as many as 12 women can share one cottage.Given the women have no say in their living conditions, says former prisoner Ann Hansen, issues are bound to crop out.“You have a group of women living in a small area, and they didn’t choose to live together,” she tells CTV.“You start having fights and problems.”Another former inmate – “Petey”, who cannot be named as she was a teen when she and her sister were convicted of drugging and drowning their mother – says substance issues are a major problem at the prison.According to Petey, drugs meant to sedate prisoners often become a source of addiction for prisoners that continues even after the sentence is served.“They’re just dependent on these medications that they can’t afford once they’re out,” she says.Other drugs, not prescribed nor allowed in the prison, are often smuggled in by guards or employees, Petey says. But not all prisoners fall victim to substance abuse. The prison provides rehabilitation programs for inmates, helping them upgrade their education or learn job skills in an area like a hair salon or Corcan, an on-site factory for linens and textiles. In exchange for working at Corcan, inmates receive up to $6.90 per day, which they use to purchase phone time, food and stamps.Purchasing food is especially necessary because sharing it with a fellow inmate is a chargeable offence.“If someone from a neighbouring living unit or quote-unquote cottage doesn’t have a cup of flour and you give them a cup of flour, you get thrown into the hole or segregation,” says Petey.
That’s not the biggest problem at Grand Valley, Petey says – the biggest problem, in her estimation, is a lack of oversight.“Canadians are told there is a complaint process in the prison, ‘If anything happens, all they need to do is fill out a form,’” she tells CTV.“It’s bogus. The women are punished for filing grievances.”While at Grand Valley, Petey says she filed a grievance against a guard to told her to “get (her) Indian shit out of here.”She says the guard sent to deal with the grievance was the same one who Petey had filed the grievance against; the guard didn’t remember saying anything and the grievance was judged to have been “informally resolved.”Amy Reier chairs the board of the Waterloo Region Elizabeth Fry Society. She’s represented many women charged with internal offences at the prison, and says she’s seen recent changes for the better in how the prison deals with internal infractions – but there’s still a way to go.“You’re very much subjected to red tape, guard’s discretion,” she says.Interview requests were sent to the Grand Valley Institution for Women and the union representing guards at the prison, but both organizations declined to be interviewed.

Part 4: Prisoners have few ways to stay in touch with families, outside world

It costs the federal government $211,000 per year – nearly $600 per day – to keep a woman in a prison like Kitchener’s Grand Valley Institution for Women. To keep them in the community, in a halfway house, costs closer to $30,000 per year. But the costs to the offenders are often immeasurable – in some cases, a stint in prison costs them their families.“There’s a very, very high percentage of women in prison that have children. Many of those women have children while in custody,” says Amy Reier, chair of the Waterloo Region Elizabeth Fry Society.Sometimes, children are able to live with their mothers in prison – but there’s not much of that happening these days at GVI.“That’s something that’s not happening because of overcrowding,” says Reier.Sometimes, as happened to Marie Pelletier’s daughters, children of prisoners are shuffled between family members. In Pelletier’s case, her daughters were cared for by their father while their mother spent time in jail for assault. But when family members aren’t willing to take care of the children of imprisoned relatives, they often end up in foster care – which is how Pelletier herself grew up.An aboriginal Canadian, Pelletier says she was placed with a non-aboriginal family that wasn’t sensitive to her background.“We had to grow up with a lot of bullying. My culture was taken from me,” she says.Aboriginals make up nearly half of Grand Valley’s population. Studies show aboriginals are overrepresented in prison populations across the country.
Aboriginal support centre Healing of the Seven Generations runs healing circles every week in Kitchener. Inmates sometimes join in, escorted by a prison staff member.Centre officials says the circles make a huge difference in allowing aboriginal inmates to reconnect with their culture. But for the majority of aboriginal inmates at Grand Valley, home is somewhere other than southern Ontario, and their culture is something other than the Ontario-based traditions evident at Healing of the Seven Generations.“When we talk about our own medicines and our own traditions, that’s not Saskatchewan Cree and that’s not Mi’kmaq Newfoundland. They’re missing their culture,” says program co-ordinator Rosie Chrisjohn-Weiler.Chrisjohn-Weiler says she’s trying to launch a halfway house in Kitchener specifically for aboriginal women. For prisoners of any background, having contact with the outside world is a challenge.Nicole Kish, who is serving a life sentence for what was dubbed the “Panhandler Murder”, considers herself one of the luckier prisoners at Grand Valley, as her family is able to pay her visits twice a week – the most the prison allows.“We stick together, and they know just because Nyki’s not with us on the outside doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stick with our family meetings,” Kish’s aunt, Wendy Green, tells CTV.Still, family members note that the visits aren’t without their own heartbreak, including guards listening to the conversation and strip searches of Kish at the end of the visit. For a while, Kish was able to communicate with the wider world by maintaining a blog. She would dictate entries word-for-word to her mother, who would post them online. But the blogging stopped several months ago, with Kish telling CTV News through her mother that she faced a “backlash” from prison staff.“Every time we speak out, every time we ask for answers, Nyki pays the price,” says Christine Lews-Bivens, Kish’s mother.Blogging can lead to backlash, visits require visitors and phone calls cost money – which leaves letter writing as the only option for many women to stay in touch with those outside Grand Valley’s walls.

Part 5: Programs inside GVI an aid for rehabilitation, so why are they being cut?

From her own account, Missie Poirier has not had an easy life.
“At an early age I started using drugs and abusing drugs, which went on and on and led to me selling drugs”, recalls Poirier. Those actions got her arrested.  In 2007, she began a three year sentence at Grand Valley Institution.Poirier participated in programs at the prison run by the Correctional Service of Canada.  She says the best program is one called Stride Night, run by the Community Justice Initiatives.  “It’s a choice and when you go there, you kind of lose all that freedom.”Stride Night has been a weekly activity at GVI for more than 15 years.  Essentially, inmates pair with each other and volunteers in any number of activities; be they sports, arts or crafts.Julie Thompson, the Director of Programs for Community Justice Initiatives, says Stride Night isn’t a series of make-work projects, rather an opportunity to form bonds with others.  “Those relationships can then form into a circle and support women as they go back into the community.”
For Poirier, her friendships helped her navigate housing and Children’s Aid issues, while also providing sounding boards for advice on finding a home for her two older children.  “I used to look at these volunteers like they’re mad scientists, coming in to see what we're all about… but once you start going and the same women keep coming in every week it shows you that people do care.”Women like Cindy MacRae, who has been volunteering with Stride Night for more than two years.  “It’s just a real privilege to be able to walk along with these women at this time in their life and it’s very rewarding.”The Elizabeth Fry Society also contributes through programming aimed at helping inmates acquire various forms of identification, social insurance cards and health cards.  Board Chair for the Elizabeth Fry society Amy Reier says getting inmates reconnected to society can often be a long, drawn out process.  “It’s not necessarily something that the institution can accommodate or does in any expedient manner.”GVI does, of course, run much of its own programming. One that has been very successful is chaplaincy. There were two and a half staff chaplain positions here until this week, but cuts to funding slashed the program down to just one full-time position.
“It’s impossible.  It’s asking for the impossible”, says Con O’Mahony, pastor of St. Michael’s Church.  Father O’Mahony’s parish holds the contract for the Roman Catholic chaplain.  That chaplain lost his job.  O’Mahony and members of Interfaith Grand River say there’s no way one person can help up to 200 women.  “Not enough staff time to have men and women coming in and out of the prison for worship services, for activities, things where the women get to come out of the prison and go back in”, says Brice Balmer, a member of Interfaith Grand River’s steering committee.Simply put, Balmer says inmates need better services if they’re going to rehabilitate.  “The women have a chance to see what’s happening in the outside world.”The Mennonite Central Committee is trying to keep the half-time chaplain working through alternate funding methods.  MCC Ontario’s Program Director, Wendy Adema, says 80% to 90% of women working with the MCC don’t end up back behind bars.  “[We] get to know them when they're in the institution.  Get a sense of who they are.  What their needs are.  What their desires are for when they return to community.”Former inmate Missie Poirier can’t believe the chaplain’s role is being reduced.  Now remarried, with her own house and the proud mother of a toddler, she says the chaplain is one of the few people most inmates can talk to and trust.  “They're taking away your church. Whether you're in prison or whether you're in the community, I think that would infringe on people's rights.”

It now moves to the full Assembly for a vote. The Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee approved an identical bill in March.

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie plans to sign a bill today barring licensed therapists from trying to convert gay minors into heterosexuals.New Jersey will be the second state to ban the treatment along with California.
The bill passed both houses of the Legislature with bipartisan support in June.Gay activists pushing the ban were uncertain what Christie would do.In a signing note accompanying the bill obtained by The Associated Press that will be made public today, Christie says he believes people are born gay and homosexuality is not a sin. That view is inconsistent with his Catholic faith. The governor also says the health risks of trying to change a child's sexual orientation identified by the American Psychological Association outweigh concerns over the government setting limits on parental choice.

PSALMS 14:1
1  To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

ROMANS 1:18-32
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:(HOMOSEXUALITY,AND ALL SEX SINS)
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:(LESBIENS)
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly,(SODOMITES) and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.(AIDS ETC)
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

New Zealand gay weddings begin, 1 at 39,000 feet

QUEENSTOWN, New Zealand (AP) — When Lynley Bendall and Ally Wanikau walked down the aisle to exchange vows Monday, the fasten-seatbelt signs were off.The couple celebrated the legalization of gay marriage in New Zealand by getting hitched in a plane at 39,000 feet (11,900 meters). Along for the ride was Jesse Tyler Ferguson, star of the ABC sitcom "Modern Family."Instead of soda and peanuts, the flight attendants served champagne and canapes.Monday was the first day same-sex couples could marry in New Zealand, where the law was changed back in April. Officials said that about three dozen same-sex couples planned to marry in towns and cities throughout the country.Bendall and Wanikau were flying high after winning a promotion by national carrier Air New Zealand. Their winning video featured their three young foster children holding handwritten signs saying why their parents should get married on a plane, including one that read "Wow!! Imagine that for news at school!!!"Bendall said the law change is "huge" for New Zealand: "We're so proud."She and Wanikau have been together 13 years. They are both childcare workers and met through work.Ferguson said he hoped to help shine the spotlight on New Zealand's law change. He married his longtime partner, lawyer Justin Mikita, in a New York City ceremony last month."So I'm very happy to come out here with my husband to bring some attention to this great day," he said.Ferguson said that with gay marriage not legally recognized in 37 U.S. states, there is plenty of work to do there to change attitudes. He said television comedy is a great way to help normalize homosexuality."We really sneak into a lot of living rooms with no agenda," he said. People "start loving this gay couple on television, and they say, 'I love Cam and Mitch,' and so what's so different with Bob and Joe down the street?"Ferguson said he faced discrimination growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico."It was very difficult. I was name-called a lot, I had to move schools a few times because I was bullied," he said. "A lot of those people who bullied me are now very jealous of my career, and have tried to connect with me on Facebook. And, of course, I'm a very forgiving person, but, you know, I don't totally forget."Asked what he thought about leaving on the flight from a place called Queenstown, Ferguson laughed, saying he thought it was "very appropriate," and adding that "It hasn't gone unnoticed."After the charter flight landed in Auckland, the plane was towed to a hangar for a reception with live music and a rainbow-colored wedding cake.Celebrant Kim Jewel Elliott had twice before united the couple — first in 2001 in a commitment ceremony and then in 2009 in a civil union."I feel so happy," Elliott said. "Injustices still happen and there are still things to fight for. But this is a real day of joy.

Ban Ki-moon Admits: UN is Biased Against Israel

The head of the UN admits to Israeli students that the organization he heads is biased against the Jewish state.-By Elad Benari-First Publish: 8/18/2013, 5:36 AM-Israelnationalnews

The head of the United Nations admitted this past week that the organization he heads has had a bias against Israel.“Unfortunately, because of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Israel has been weighed down by criticism and suffered from bias and sometimes even discrimination,” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon admitted during his visit to Jerusalem, according to the European Jewish Press (EJP).Addressing students participating in the Rishon Lezion College of Management’s Model UN program at the UN headquarters in Jerusalem, Ban said Israel should be treated equal to all the other 192 UN member states. The comments came in response to complaints by the students that Israel receives more criticism than any other member country in the world body.Ban told the students he had come to the region for the sixth time to express his support for the renewed peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority."I have never been this optimistic," he said, according to EJP, adding that the international community had never had such expectations and hope that the peace process would reach a solution.“This time, I expect real peace,” the UN chief said, urging both sides ‘’to be patient’’ and adding that negotiations are still the best way to reach a two-state solution.“The Israeli and Palestinian people are neighbors and have no choice but to live in harmony and peace, side by side,” Ban was quoted by EJP as having said.On Friday, Ban met with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who told him that the Israeli-Arab conflict has nothing to do with the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria and everything to do with Arab refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.“As far as the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, we have to get to the root cause of the problem and the root cause was and remains the persistent refusal to recognize the Jewish State in any boundary,” said Netanyahu.“It doesn’t have to do with the settlements – that’s an issue that has to be resolved, but this is not the reason that we have a continual conflict. The conflict preceded the establishment of a single settlement by half a century and when we rooted out all the settlements in Gaza, the attacks continued because of this basic opposition to the Jewish State. I think it’s important to understand that if we build a few hundred apartments in Gilo or Ramot, or the other Jewish neighborhoods of Jerusalem, or in urban blocks that everybody knows, including the Palestinian negotiating team, according to the Al Jazeera leaks, will be part of the final peace map in Israel, I think these are not the real issues that we need to discuss.”Netanyahu called on Ban to look into the abuse of UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency) camps in Gaza which was running "peace camps" that were actually being used to "instill the culture of hatred and the ideas of destroying Israel amidst Palestinian children.”Ban also called on Israelis and PA Arabs to overcome "deep skepticism" that he said risked thwarting efforts to reach a peace agreement. "We must overcome the deep skepticism that comes from 20 years of stalemate," Ban said at a meeting in Jerusalem with Israeli President Shimon Peres.

Ban Ki-moon admits UN bias against Israel
DEBKAfile August 17, 2013, 11:14 AM (GMT+02:00)
Visiting UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon admitted that, “Unfortunately because of the conflict, Israel has been weighed down by criticism and suffered from bias – sometimes even discrimination.” He was speaking to Israeli students in Rishon Lezion Friday. Ban added that Israel should be treated as “equal to all other 192 members states.” The UN secretary was optimism about the current peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. He urged Israel to overcome its skepticism and the Palestinians to unify, in order to achieve two states living in peace – three states would be unacceptable.

The Coptic Church: "With the army, against violent organisations"

Incredibly tough statement from the largest Christian community in Egypt, excluding any possibility of mediation with the Muslim Brotherhood while also accusing the foreign media

Giorgio Bernardelli Rome

The Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt has once again unreservedly taken the side of the army. After three days of violence following the clearing out of Morsi supporters from sit-ins, the community led by Pope Tawadros II released its first official reaction on Friday night. The statement came at the end of the 'day of anger', on which dozens of churches and buildings outside the capital linked with the Christian presence were attacked by Islamists. All the while the Police continued to shoot at Morsi supporters. It should also be noted, however, that in some cases, such as in Sohag and Mynia, moderate Muslims have constructed human chains in order to hold back Islamists and to protect Christian places of worship. At the end of another day of clashes, a very tough statement was issued, published on the website of Pope Tawadros, head of the largest Egyptian Christian faith. The text leaves no margin for dialogue with the Muslim Brotherhood. The Coptic Orthodox Church states that it is on "the side of Egyptian law, of the armed forces and of all the Egyptian civil institutions when it comes to confronting violent armed organisations and ambiguous forces for wrongdoing, either within the country or abroad". He encourages listeners to look beyond the squares where the Muslim Brotherhood have been holding sit-ins, to look further in order to gain a general overview of what has been occurring for weeks in the country. "The attacks on government buildings and peaceful churches are terrorising everyone, whether they be Copts or Muslims. These actions go against any religion, any moral code and any sense of humanity", reads the text released by the Coptic Pope Tawadros. The Coptic Church also issued a harsh judgement on the way in which the crisis is reported outside Egypt. It expressly speaks of "falsehoods broadcast by Western media", urging for an "objective" revision to be made of the descriptions given of the actions of those unreservedly labelled as "blood-thirsty radical organisations". The Coptic Orthodox Church maintains that, "instead of legitimising them with global support and political coverage while they are trying to wreak havoc and destruction upon our beloved land, the media should report all events truthfully, with accuracy and with honesty".On a broader level, Tawadros accuses the Muslim Brotherhood of having sought out any way to bring about sectarian clashes. He reaffirmed his own support for "national unity" while rejecting any form of "international interference in our internal affairs. As the hand of evil continues to commit arson, to kill and to destroy, God's hand comes closer in order to protect, to strengthen and to rebuild. We place our full trust in Him in leading the Egyptian people at this delicate time in our history towards a better future, one which is full of peace, justice and democracy, all of which are things the people of the Nile Valley deserve".This stance reflects the mood of the vast majority of Copts, who have expressed their support for the army in many different ways in the last few days, even with regards to the wave of terror and the church attacks. However, at the same time, this creates the risk of greater exposure of the Copts to the wrath of the radicals - all of this to the backdrop of an ever more dangerous downward spiral.

Egypt's churches looted and torched

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • A Christian church southwest of Cairo is attacked, state news says
  • Moderate Muslims put out fire at one church, halted other attacks, church staff say
  • A Coptic Orthodox Church leader says 52 churches have been attacked in 24 hours
  • Bishop: "It's about burning churches to initiate a response that spirals into greater violence"
Kafr Hakim, Egypt (CNN) -- For 67 years, the Virgin Mary Church has been a peaceful refuge for Shenouda El Sayeh, much like the Giza province village of Kafr Hakim where it rests and where he has lived all those years. But, as he swept its floors on Thursday, it was painfully obvious things had changed. The night before, a mob -- chanting against Coptic Christians such as El Sayeh and calling for Egypt to become an "Islamic state" -- had torched and looted the Virgin Mary Church."I didn't expect this to happen," El Sayeh said.

Photos: Egypt protests
He's not alone. Christians all around Egypt are cleaning up in the aftermath of a spate of attacks, which came on the country's deadliest day since the 2011 revolution that overthrew longtime President Hosni Mubarak.
Bishop Angaelos, the Cairo-born head of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom, said he was told by colleagues in Egypt that 52 churches were attacked in a 24-hour span that started Wednesday, as well as numerous Christians' homes and businesses.Ishak Ibrahim, a researcher with the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, told CNN he had confirmed attacks on at least 30 churches so far, in addition to the targeting of church-related facilities, including schools and cultural centers. Those churches reportedly set ablaze Wednesday included St. George Church in Sohag, a city south of Cairo on the Nile River. And the new day brought new attacks. Prince Tadros Church in Fayoum, which is southwest of Cairo, was stormed and burned Thursday night, according to the official Middle East News Agency. This and other attacks have been blamed by some on supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist movement which backs recently deposed President Mohamed Morsy. Government efforts to clear the group's Cairo protest camps resulted in gruesome scenes in the capital: Egypt's health ministry says that at least 580 people were killed and more than 4,000 injured amid clashes involving security forces and Morsy supporters.Against this backdrop, it may be some time before it's established what group, if any, is behind the church attacks, and how coordinated this violence has been.Until then, Christians in Egypt are left to try to put things back together, as well as to attempt to make sense of what's transpired. As Dalia Ziada of the Ibn Khaldun Center for Development Studies, told CNN: "This is horrible to happen in only one day."

'A very dangerous game to play'
Egypt will have much to deal with if, and when, things do settle down. Once that happens, Angaelos says that a proper investigation of the church attacks should follow -- especially since, he feels, the sheer scale of incidents suggests they were orchestrated, rather than a byproduct of chaotic unrest."We would want the people who have done it to be brought to justice because I think they are trying to do something which is much more dangerous," he said."It's not just about burning churches, it's about burning churches to initiate a response that then spirals into even greater violence -- and that is a very, very dangerous game to play."
The targeting of churches and Christian properties was not unexpected, Angaelos said, given the tensions in Cairo and elsewhere and in light of escalating attacks on Coptic Christians in recent weeks. The growing threat led him last week to issue a statement warning of "a very real risk upon the life of every Christian." Pope Tawadros II, the church's leader in Egypt, also suspended weekly public events for fear of attacks on Christian congregations. But the warnings didn't prevent the violence, nor did security efforts to protect churches and Christian communities, according to Ibrahim.Said Angaelos, "The ferocity and the speed with which it all happened ... was quite surprising."

Burning of books
A Bible Society of Egypt statement posted online Wednesday reported the "complete burning and destruction" of its bookshops in the cities of Assiut and Minia, in southern Egypt."Fortunately we were closed today, fearing such an attack, so none of our staff were injured," wrote Ramez Atallah, the society's general director. "The attackers demolished the metal doors protecting the bookshops, broke the store windows behind them and set the bookshops on fire."Other stores and parked cars on those streets were also destroyed, he said."It is important to underline that -- while some Christian properties have been the victim of this violence -- they are by no means the only ones targeted," Atallah said."This is an attack against the state by a violent minority in an attempt to destabilize the nation."CNN iReporter Amir Beshay, from Cairo, helped draw up a list of Christian churches and properties reportedly targeted. On it are sites in Alexandria, Arish, Assiut, Beni Suef, Cairo, Fayoum, Gharbiya, Giza, Minya, Qena, Sohag and Suez. They include churches and schools, as well as homes and businesses belonging to Coptic Christians. CNN has not been able independently to verify the reports.Asked about the attacks on churches Wednesday, U.S. State Department Spokeswoman Marie Harf said the United States was deeply concerned. "We will continue speaking out against this and continue talking to all parties and all sides about renouncing this violence, about moving forward with a democratic process."Daniel Sinclair, director of communications at Christian Solidarity Worldwide, said the group was "deeply concerned at the unwarranted and continuing targeting of the Coptic community. We urge the government to ensure comprehensive security to all Egyptians, regardless of their religion."

Long history in Egypt
Egypt's Christian minority has been the target of a number of attacks in recent years. The bombing of a major church in Alexandria in January 2011 killed 21 people and sparked worldwide condemnation. The situation has only become worse since Egypt's popular revolution overthrew former President Hosni Mubarak in 2011, said Angaelos."In the past two-and-a-half years, we've had more deaths of people just because they are Christians than in the last 20 years," he said, adding that this had not triggered violent retaliation. He hopes for forgiveness and reconciliation among all Egyptians going forward, to help build a unified country. Christians have been in Egypt since the 1st century and were, for centuries, the majority. Some 90% of Coptic Christians still live in the country, he said, making up the largest Christian community in the Middle East.Angaelos puts the proportion of Christians in Egypt at 15 to 20% of the population. The CIA World Factbook says 10% of Egypt's population is Christian, while the Pew Research Center, which says firm numbers are hard to come by, puts the figure at about 5%.Back in Kafr Hakim, Atia Ghattas told CNN his family's houses were attacked on the same night the church was looted. There was incitement against the Coptic community through the mosques in the area, he said.Father Boktor Saad, of Kafr Hakim's Virgin Mary Church, said he believes that a small group of extremists were responsible for inciting groups to attack his church. But, he and other church staff said, not everyone participated, and some non-Christians prevented the situation in that village from getting worse. They credited moderate Muslims with putting out the fire at Virgin Mary, and halting further attacks on Coptic Christians' homes and shops.Journalist Sarah Sirgany reported from Hafr Hakim, Giza, and CNN's Laura Smith-Spark reported from London. CNN's Greg Botelho, Arwa Damon, Sarah Brown and Richard Allen Greene contributed to this report.

In a land where Christianity and Islam have existed since their earliest days, Christians and Muslims have been living side by side in peace for centuries. Will the repercussions of the Arab revolutions reach all the way to Ethiopia and the region?

Davide Demichelis Roma

Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi is one of the hundred wealthiest men in the world. He lives between Addis Ababa and Riyadh, is of Ethiopian birth and has Saudi nationality. His fortune has been amassed through his work in a wide range of sectors including mining, hospitals, finance, agriculture and oil. There is only one other dark-skinned man in the world who has greater wealth than he does.Incredibly acute inequality is nothing out of the ordinary in Ethiopia – a country with eighty million inhabitants whose life expectancy is below fifty. Ethiopia has an incredibly exclusive elite made up of few very wealthy citizens, with very prosperous countries not too far away. For a case in point, we could look at the United Arab Emirates or Saudi Arabia, nations that have built their immense wealth on oil. These are Islamic countries keen to swell the ranks of those who follow the words of the Quran, even in Queen Sheba’s homeland, where Mohammed sought refuge when he was forced to flee persecution in Mecca.“Our challenge also centres around the poverty of our own people”, says the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Addis Ababa, Abune Berhaneyesus Dermerew Souraphiel, “the Saudis help our poor people in exchange for them converting to Islam. The Saudis know that they will not be good Muslims, but that their children will be. In this way, Saudi Wahabbism is putting peaceful coexistence in Ethiopia at risk”.On 9 August, 10,000 Muslims paraded through the streets of the capital to celebrate the end of Ramadan. They called for the release of the imams arrested some twenty months ago because of their links with fundamentalist groups and the sermons they preached after praying. Religious leaders have been accused of conspiring against the state. The demonstration descended into violent clashes, with some injured and a few deaths. The Islamic community has very tense links with the government, even though several ministers are Muslim. The country’s economy is seeing strong growth, but a lot is left to be desired in the area of human rights. For instance, one year ago, twenty journalists were convicted of conspiring against the government and given very severe sentences of between eight years and life.In August last year, the Orthodox Patriarch Abuna Paulos and Melles Zenawi died. The latter had been the one to overthrow the former dictator, Mengistu, before ruling the country from the end of the 1991 war onwards. The deaths of these two important figures now means that the political balance and religious balance are much more delicate. According to the last government census, 34% of Ethiopians practice Islam, while Christians make up 62% of the population. 44% of Ethiopians are Orthodox Christians, while 17% are Protestant and only 1% are Catholics, who number around 800,000 in total. Despite their small numbers, the Catholics run a large share of the social services. For some time, Christians and Muslims have worked together on several social works. Furthermore, recently an Interreligious Council was created in order to facilitate dialogue and manage shared services.

“The government entrusts us with many social services because we do not discriminate”, says the Archbishop of Addis Ababa and President of the Ethiopian Bishops’ Conference, who underscored the fact that nor should the state discriminate against anyone, basing itself on its own most fundamental form of legislation, “our constitution is open to all religious groups. The Muslims would like to impose Sharia law, but public courts do not apply religious laws”.

In Ethiopia, many keep a close eye on how the crises in North Africa and the Middle East are developing, in particular those in Syria and Egypt. If the Muslim Brotherhood ends up on top, this could grant renewed strength to Islamic Salafist groups, who want to impose Sharia law and give Islams a greater presence in public life.

Bending for Islam

August 17, 2013, 7:30 am 1-The Times of Israel

To a Muslim like myself, Islam has passed me by the day a Mutawya’ah (Saudi religious police) caned me for refusal to pray in the Grand Mosque of Riyadh, but it has become a target of my criticism just last week when the Islamists in Zanzibar doused two innocent British girls with acid. The straw of that incident broke my back.My criticism of my religion is long overdue. Out of respect for my family, peers and friends, I delayed the inevitable because of my overflowing optimism. I cannot and will not glue this broken glass.
If we Muslims do not speak about our own ills, who will? Consider for a moment any of the five possible reasons why the Zanzibar Islamists viciously attacked Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup, both 18-years old.
According to The Daily Beast, which dispatched Margot Kiser to investigate the matter, the attack could have been motivated by a Muslim woman who slapped one of the girls, two days earlier, for singing Western songs. It is possible she would have instigated men in her family to carry out the attack.Alternatively, the attack could have been motivated by local boys whose advances Katie and Kirstie spurned.Or, it could have been motivated when the girls reported missing funds at the Catholic School where they worked.Or, it could have been motivated by the fact they were not appropriately dressed in accordance with local customs
Or, the girls were singled out because they were Jewish.Good grief, where do I start? For singing or playing your music, we will mutilate you.For not satisfying our sexual urges due to our own religious repression, we will mutilate you if you do not submit to our hormonal rage. For stealing from your employer, we will mutilate you if you report it; meanwhile, if you steal from us, we will cut your limbs one by one.For not wearing the Hijab, we will mutilate you; meanwhile, Western societies permit Muslim women the freedom to select between customs. For just being Jews, we will mutilate you. You are guilty even when innocent. Is Islamism sick or what? Do you find the silence by our Muslim leaders as intolerable as I do? If you do, please voice your concerns. The first step to fixing our ills is for the world to stop treating us like royalties by bending before us or bending its rules to please us.The West must hold those responsible, directly and indirectly, accountable. It is not just about the two Islamists who attacked Katie and Kirstie, it is, also, about the deafening silence of those Arab and Muslim leaders the West mistakenly holds in high regard.Enough is enough.

The Zanzibar government has offered a $6,170 reward for information on attackers who threw acid at the two women.

Men riding a motorbike threw acid at two British teenage girls in Tanzania's semi-autonomous Zanzibar region, leaving them with facial, chest and back injuries, a senior police official said on Thursday. The Zanzibar government has offered a $6,170 reward for information on attackers who threw acid at two British Jewish women.Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup, both 18 and reportedly active members of the Federation for Zionist Youth (FZY), are from England's northern city of Manchester. According to police in the Indian Ocean archipelago, they were flown to Tanzania's commercial capital Dar es Salaam.Trup’s father, Marc Trup, a dentist in Hampstead, told the Telegraph: “We're trying to get them back as soon as possible. We're trying to organize a medivac flight." They had been volunteering at a local school in Zanzibar, an island that is popular with international tourists but suffered a wave of deadly protests last year as supporters of an Islamist group repeatedly clashed with the police.Britain is concerned about Wednesday's attack and is "in contact with the Tanzanian authorities," the Foreign Office said in a statement.A friend of Trup's, Oli Cohen, 21, told the Jewish Chronicle, "Katie was attacked two weeks ago by a Muslim woman for singing on Ramadan. She was shocked as it just came from out of the blue - but she wasn't scared enough to come home she stayed out there to finish her trip and volunteering.” The police, however, described the attack as "an isolated incident", refusing to link it to rising religious tension on the island between majority Muslims and its Christian population. The police said it was the first time visitors to the island had been attacked in this way, describing the incident as “alien” to both the police investigating and the victims. Officers had no idea as to the motive, they said."The attackers approached the girls as they were walking on a street at around 7:15 p.m. and threw acid at them," Zanzibar Urban West regional police commander Mkadam Khamis Mkadam told Reuters. "The incident occurred when the streets were deserted as most people were breaking their Ramadan fast."Television images showed one girl obviously in pain in the back of a car at the Zanzibar airport."The victims sustained facial, chest and back injuries from the acid attack," Mkadam said.According to the Jewish Chronicle, Gee's mother, Nicky was previously featured in the Chronicle as a supporter of the Israel-based Hazon Yeshaya Soup Kitchens charity.Friends of the victims took to Twitter to express their shock and support, the Chronicle reported. Sabrina Davies tweeted, "Hope @katiejgee and Kirstie make a speedy recovery, thinking of you both xxx." Louisa Green also tweeted, "Can't actually believe what I just read in the news... Absolutely horrific. Thoughts are with @katiejgee and Kirsty Xxx".Jemima Schav also contributed to the Twitter conversation, saying, "Really hoping @katiejgee is okay right now".The Britons were expected to fly home on Thursday. The attack came during the tourist season in the historic town and after a Zanzibar Muslim leader, Sheikh Fadhil Suleiman Soraga, was hospitalised with acid burns in a November attack. Two Christian leaders were killed early this year in separate attacks.A separatist group in Zanzibar, Uamsho (Awakening), is pushing for the archipelago to exit from its 1964 union with mainland Tanzania, which is ruled as a secular country. Uamsho wants to introduce Islamic Sharia law in Zanzibar.
Supporters of the group have engaged in running street battles with the police in the past, but authorities have not linked the group with the attacks on Christian clerics.
