Army Labeled Evangelicals as Religious Extremists

A U.S. Army training instructor listed Evangelical Christianity and Catholicism as examples of religious extremism along with Al Qaeda and Hamas during a briefing with an Army Reserve unit based in Pennsylvania, Fox News has learned.“We find this offensive to have Evangelical Christians and the Catholic Church to be listed among known terrorist groups,” said Ron Crews, executive director of the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty. “It is dishonorable for any U.S. military entity to allow this type of wrongheaded characterization.”

The incident occurred during an Army Reserve Equal Opportunity training brief on extremism. Topping the list is Evangelical Christianity. Other organizations listed included Catholicism, Al Qaeda, Hamas, the Ku Klux Klan, Sunni Muslims, and Nation of Islam.The military also listed “Islamophobia” as a form of religious extremism.Army spokesman George Wright told Fox News that this was an “isolated incident not condoned by the Dept. of the Army.”“This slide was not produced by the Army and certainly does not reflect our policy or doctrine,” he said. “It was produced by an individual without anyone in the chain of command’s knowledge or permission.”Wright said after the complaint was lodged, the presenter deleted the slide, and apologized.“We consider the matter closed,” he said.The incident was made public by a soldier who attended the briefing. He asked for copies of the presentation and sent them to the Chaplain Alliance.
“He considers himself an evangelical Christian and did not appreciate being classified with terrorists,” Crews told Fox News. “There was a pervasive attitude in the presentation that anything associated with religion is an extremist.”The Archdiocese for the Military Services was shocked to learn that the Army considered Catholicism to be an example of extremism.“The Archdiocese is astounded that Catholics were listed alongside groups that are, by their very mission and nature, violent and extremist,” the Archdiocese said in a statement.They want the Dept. of Defense to “ensure that taxpayer funds are never again used to present blatantly anti-religious material to the men and women in uniform.”

“In the notes it was clearly stated that the presenter was not a subject matter expert, and produced the material after conducting Internet research,” Wright said.So if the presenter was not an expert, what were they doing presenting the material, Crews asked.He said he had a chance to speak with the officer who conducted the briefing and she told him that she got her information from the Southern Poverty Law Center.
“Why is there such dependence upon the work of the SPLC to determine hate groups and extremist groups,” Crews said. “It appears that some military entities are using definitions of ‘hate’ and ‘extreme’ from the lists of anti-Christian political organizations. That violates the apolitical stance appropriate for the military.”But Mark Potok, a spokesman for the Southern Poverty Law Center, told Fox News they did not provide the military with any list about religious extremism.“It’s emphatically – 100 percent false,” Potok said.He said the SPLC has never labeled Evangelical Christianity or Catholicism as extremist groups.
Crews said he is extremely disappointed in the military’s handling of the incident and said they need to fix the “gross distortions presented in the briefing.“Those soldiers who were presented this material – they need to have a new briefing with corrected materials,” Crews said. “They need to undo the damage that was done.”
He also wants the military to consult with chaplains about matters involving religion.“All religious issues of this sort in the U.S. military should be channeled first through the Chiefs of Chaplains offices for review,” he said. “Do they really want to classify evangelicals and the Catholic Church as extremist groups?”

He did not give details."China's economy will continue to maintain a healthy growth rate," Xi said. "We will persist with reforms and doggedly pursue the path of changing our economic ways."In contrast, an ailing global economy faces a difficult recovery fraught with risks, he said.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A top South Korean national security official said Sunday that North Korea may be setting the stage for a missile test or another provocative act with its warning that it soon will be unable to guarantee diplomats' safety in Pyongyang. But he added that the North's clearest objective is to extract concessions from Washington and Seoul.North Korea's warning last week followed weeks of war threats and other efforts to punish South Korea and the U.S. for ongoing joint military drills, and for their support of U.N. sanctions over Pyongyang's Feb. 12 nuclear test. Many nations are deciding what to do about the notice, which said their diplomats' safety in Pyongyang cannot be guaranteed beginning this Wednesday.Tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang led South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff to announce Sunday that its chairman had put off a visit to Washington. The U.S. military said its top commander in South Korea had also canceled a trip to Washington. BEIJING/SEOUL (Reuters) - China warned against "troublemaking" on its doorstep, in an apparent rebuke to North Korea, and the United States said it was postponing a missile test to help calm high tension on the divided Korean peninsula.The North, led by 30-year-old Kim Jong-un, has been issuing vitriolic threats of war against the United States and U.S.-backed South Korea since the United Nations imposed sanctions in response to its third nuclear weapon test in February.Pyongyang's anger appears heightened by U.S.-South Korean joint military exercises. But most analysts say it has no intention of starting a conflict that would bring its own destruction and instead is out to wring concessions from a nervous international community.The North told diplomats late last week to consider leaving Pyongyang because of the tension, but embassies appeared to view the appeal as more rhetoric and staff have stayed put.South Korea said it was ready for any kind of action that the North's unpredictable leaders might make - including a possible missile launch - by Wednesday, after which the North said it could not guarantee diplomats' safety.China, North Korea's sole financial and diplomatic backer, has shown growing irritation with Pyongyang's warnings of nuclear war.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, addressing a forum on the southern island of Hainan, did not name North Korea but said no country "should be allowed to throw a region and even the whole world into chaos for selfish gain".Stability in Asia, he said, "faces new challenges, as hot spot issues keep emerging and both traditional and non-traditional security threats exist".Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed similar frustration in a statement late on Saturday, relating a telephone conversation with U.N. Interviewed by Sky News, he said the international response "should also be very clear, very united and calm at all times because it's important not to feed that frenetic rhetoric that we've seen over the last few weeks".
Switzerland's Foreign Ministry offered to mediate, saying it was "always willing to help find a solution, if this is the wish of the parties, such as hosting meetings between them".Kim, the third member of his dynasty to rule North Korea, is thought to have spent several years in Switzerland being educated under a pseudonym. He took over in December 2011 after the death of his father Kim Jong-il, who confronted South Korea and the United States throughout his 17-year rule.
FEAR OF "MISCALCULATION"
In Washington, a defense official said a long-scheduled test of the Minuteman III intercontinental missile, due to take place at the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, would be postponed."This test ... has been delayed to avoid any misperception or miscalculation in light of recent tensions on the Korean peninsula," the official said on Saturday. "This is the logical, prudent and responsible course of action to take."He said the test had been unconnected to "anything related to North Korea" and added that another test launch could be expected next month. The United States remained fully prepared to respond to any North Korean threat, the official said.The South Korean president's office said the country had a "firm military readiness" for any eventuality. It described as "planned behavior" the North's call for South Korean workers to leave the Kaesong joint industrial park, just inside North Korea, and for diplomats to evacuate Pyongyang by Wednesday."Ahead of that time, a situation like a North Korean missile launch could occur," Kim Haing, a spokeswoman for the presidential Blue House, quoted the chief of the National Security office as saying. Lawmaker: Iran will never halt nuclear program

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A top Iranian lawmaker declared Sunday that Iran will never halt its nuclear development program, a day after the latest round of international talks failed to reach agreement on the issue.Alaeddin Boroujerdi said the talks were "considered effective and a step forward," but he added, "the Islamic Republic of Iran will never stop uranium enrichment activities."Boroujerdi, who heads a parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy, said the talks should continue. He was quoted by the ISNA news agency.Western powers are concerned that Iran may move toward production of nuclear weapons. Iran denies that, insisting that its program is peaceful.World powers have repeatedly demanded that Iran close down its Fordo underground uranium enrichment plant that is enriching uranium up to 20 percent. Uranium that is enriched to 90 percent can be used in weapons.The U.N. has enacted four rounds of economic sanctions against Iran to try to force it to curtail its program, but Iran has remained defiant.

"If one day the (Iranian) administration decides to close down Fordo, the parliament will oppose the decision, definitely," Boroujerdi was quoted as saying. He said Iran will continue reinforcing the plant because of foreign threats. Both the U.S. and Israel have hinted at military action against Iran's nuclear facilities if diplomacy fails.Ali Akbar Velayati, an adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, blamed the West for failure at the weekend talks in Almaty, Kazakhstan. "The talks showed that the West is not honest in its remarks," he told reporters.He said Western powers cannot achieve progress "if they do not acknowledge Iran's natural rights" to enrich uranium.Velayati is seen a leading candidate for June elections to pick a successor to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.The comments were the first by top Iranian officials after the talks Friday and Saturday between Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. The European Jewish Congress found a 30 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents across the world in 2012, according to an annual report the organization published on Sunday in cooperation with Tel Aviv University.The study linked the surge to Europe’s economic troubles and a deadly attack on Jewish schoolchildren last year in Toulouse, France.It appears that rather than the Toulouse attacks being a shock to the system, they had the opposite effect and perhaps allowed terrorist groups in Europe to become more emboldened,” EJC President Moshe Kantor said at an anti-Semitism press conference Sunday at Tel Aviv University, pointing to attempted terror attacks across the continent against Jewish targets.In Europe, Hungary was identified as experiencing the most worrying anti-Semitic trends and a “correlation was observed between the political strengthening of extreme right parties and the high level of anti-Semitic manifestations, including incidents of violence and vandalism,” the study revealed.Greece and the Ukraine were also seeing similar trends of extreme right-wing parties whose anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli rhetoric have apparently helped ignite attacks.Tel Aviv University said Sunday that 686 attacks were recorded in 34 countries, ranging from physical violence to vandalism of synagogues and cemeteries, compared to 526 in 2011. The sharp increase followed a two-year decline.“We should be doing all we can to reverse these negative trends and there needs to be a policy of ‘zero tolerance’ for racism,” Kantor said. “We are reaching out to the leaders in Hungary and the EU and calling for the initiation of hearings in relevant committees, because this situation cannot continue.”The EJC said in a press statement that it has written to the president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, “calling on him to initiate parliamentary hearings and provide an official and regular monitoring of developments around these issues,”AP contributed to this report.

On Holocaust Memorial Day Israel should think not only of how European Jews died, but of how they lived, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau said in a special interview with Kol B’Rama. Rabbi Lau, the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv, survived the Holocaust as a child.Speaking of educating Israelis regarding the Holocaust, Rabbi Lau said, “It was very important that they knew not only how Jews died in consecration of G-d’s name. It was even more important that they know how those Jews lived to honor the divine name, until they arose to heaven.”
“To learn about the lives of those communities, about their leaders… How Jews’ lives looked before the Holocaust, their faith, their faith in the rabbis, their good and honesty, Torah and good deeds. There is so much to learn from them,” he continued.“Another message is to know and to appreciate the fact that we have a home of our own,” he said. “With all the difficulties and disagreements and internal wars, this is our home, and we have to hang on to it because we have no other home.”Finally, he said, “There in Buchenwald were Jews from Poland and Hungary, from Russia and from Lithuania, from Germany and from Thessaloniki and Bulgaria. We always knew how to die together. The time has come for us to know how to live together, too.

Israel will put another 100 million shekels per year toward care for Holocaust survivors, Finance Minister Yair Lapid announced Sunday. In total, an extra 400 million will go toward care for survivors until 2017.
Lapid announced two weeks ago that fifty million shekels will be transferred immediately in order to resume the provision of nursing care that had been stopped due to a lack of funding.He revealed the latest plan during Sunday’s Cabinet meeting. “We will not stand idly by,” he declared.Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu mentioned recent attacks on the elderly while addressing the Cabinet. “We will not tolerate this,” he said. “We will put the entire weight of the government of Israel behind preventing these criminal acts, and punishing the perpetrators.”“We have a deep obligation to the elderly in general, and to Holocaust survivors in particular,” Netanyahu said. “We are obligated first and foremost to ensure their welfare, their security and their welfare.”The government will give another 15 million shekels toward providing medicine for Holocaust survivors, he said. “These people survived the horrors of the Holocaust, they were part of Israel’s wars, they built the state of Israel… We have the obligation to help in whatever they need.”Minister of Internal Security Yitzchak Aharonovich presented the Israel Police’s plans to fight violence against the elderly.

4  Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?
5  Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
6  Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?
7  Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?
8  Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
9  Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?
10  None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?
11  Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.
12  I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.
13  Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle?
14  Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.
15  His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.
16  One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.
17  They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.
18  By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
19  Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.
20  Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.
21  His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.
22  In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.
23  The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.
24  His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.
25  When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves.
26  The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.
27  He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.
28  The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble.
29  Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.
30  Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire.
31  He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.
32  He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.
33  Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
34  He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.

JOB 42:1-17
1  Then Job answered the LORD, and said,
2  I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.
3  Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.
4  Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.
5  I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.
6  Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.
7  And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.
8  Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.
9  So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job.
10  And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.
11  Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold.
12  So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.
13  He had also seven sons and three daughters.
14  And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch.
15  And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.
16  After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.
17  So Job died, being old and full of days.
