Bnei Menashe waiting to come home
Bnei Menashe waiting to come home-Shavei Israel
Israel marked an aliyah (immigration) milestone Thursday with the arrival of the 2,000th member of the Bnei Menashe community. Eighteen-year-old Mirna Singsit arrived in Israel along with 53 other members of the community, including her parents and three siblings. The Bnei Menashe live in the Manipur state in northeastern India. They claim descent from the Biblical tribe of Menashe, one of the ten “lost tribes” exiled when the Assyrians invaded the northern kingdom of Israel. The community is now returning to Israel under the auspices of the Shavei Israel organization, a group that encourages communities of “lost Jews” around the world, including descendants of Jewish converts to Catholicism.Shavei Israel director Michael Freund gave Singsit a certificate naming her the 2,000th arrival. Singsit told him that her arrival in Israel is the fulfillment of a life-long dream.“It’s hard to express in words how excited and happy I am right now,” she said. “This isn’t just my dream from the day I was born, it’s been my community’s dream for thousands of years, and now it’s finally coming true.”She plans to complete a degree in political science that she began in India, and then work as a teacher. Her family will start its life in Israel in an absorption center, but Singsit says she hopes to someday move to Jerusalem, “the holiest place on earth.”The arrival of the 54 new immigrants was “unforgettable,” Freund said. “After 2,700 years, the tribe of Menashe is coming home,” he declared.
The government allowed immigration from Manipur to resume last October after a five-year freeze. Since then 275 members of the Bnei Manashe community have come to Israel as new citizens. The latest arrivals will live in an absorption center in Givat Haviva, and are then expected to move to Akko and Migdal Haemek in northern Israel.

Netanyahu Vows: No More Bulldozers against Jews

With Bayit Yehudi breathing down his neck, Prime Minister pledges to stop uprooting Jewish communities.

With Bayit Yehudi breathing down his neck, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu vowed in an interview published Friday not to tear down any Jewish communities in the next four years."Supporters of the settlement enterprise and of the Land of Israel could make a historic and fatal mistake, as they did in '92 and '99," he warned in the interview for Maariv. "They split the votes and weakened Likud, and the result was the rise of a leftist government.""The question is not whether I win the election, but whether I can hold my hands on the steering wheel in a stable way. When there are too many hands on the wheel, the vehicle overturns. The interviewer asked him if he can promise not to uproot any communities in the next four years.
"Yes, true," answered Netanyahu. "The days of bulldozers uprooting Jews are behind us, not in front of us. I am not in the habit of handing out concessions. Our record proves this. We never uprooted any community, we strengthened the settlement enterprise, and we established the first university in decades at Ariel. We did this while navigating the turbulent current of international events, and of course, my ability to navigate is directly connected to the party that I have behind me. The smaller it is, the less ability I have to fend off pressure.""No one needs to lecture me on love for the Land of Israel or commitment to the Zionist endeavor or the settlement enterprise," he added.

ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet,(DISOLVED) and their eyes shall consume away in their holes,(DISOLVED) and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.(DISOLVED)(BECAUSE NUKES HAVE BEEN USED ON ISRAELS ENEMIES)(GOD PROTECTS ISRAEL AND ALWAYS WILL)
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)(THIS IS AN ATOMIC BOMB EFFECT)

EZEKIEL 20:47
47 And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.

ZEPHANIAH 1:18
18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

Improved Langfan postcard
Improved Langfan postcard-Mark Langfan
Mark Langfan’s Katyusha Rocket Range All over Israel article is one of Arutz Sheva's most popular articles ever, with a over 5,400 Facebook “recommends.”
Additionally, Arutz Sheva has consistently featured Langfan's graphic in numerous news articles.
Recently, however, Rabbi Yehuda Bohrer of Beit El, who actively distributes and lectures with the cards which Langfan donates for free, concluded that the card would be more effective if it actually showed the great topographic military advantage of Judea and Samaria over the Tel Aviv-Netanya coastal plain which holds 70% of Israel’s population and 80% of its industrial base.
Following Rabbi Bohrer's suggestion, Langfan revamped the card with an actual topographic visual overlay, creating this new version. He also added a vital graphic that explains how Israel derives over 50% of its fresh water from the westward flow of water off the Samarian Mountains, which now flows toward Tel Aviv and the coastal plain areas of Israel.  Langfan, who gave a lecture to US congressional staffers on Thursday, cites CIA open sources that state that the Samarian “highlands are main recharge area for Israel’s coastal aquifers.”“Without the West Bank," he explains, "Israel will lose close to 60% of its water and will be destroyed before Hamas even has a chance to fire a chemical-tipped Katyusha rocket into Tel Aviv.”“I always say, the CIA Factbook knows more about Israel’s water supply than almost all of Israel’s leftist politicians,” he quipped. For more information about Mark Langfan’s 3D topographic website please visit www.MarkLangfan.com

Cameron publishes parts of unlucky EU speech

Today @ 09:30 JAN 18,13 By Andrew Rettman
BRUSSELS - Downing Street has circulated parts of a speech due to warn of a British EU "exit" after cancelling it because of the Algerian hostage situation. With information trickling out on an Algerian army raid on a militant-held gas plant in the south-east of the country, British leader David Cameron said on Thursday (17 January) that one UK worker has "very sadly died" and that families should prepare themselves for "further bad news."He opted to stay in the UK to chair a crisis meeting and to address parliament instead of going to Amsterdam to speak about the EU.He had already changed the date once because previous plans clashed with Franco-German celebrations of the 50-year-old Elysee peace treaty on Tuesday. The extracts circulated to news agencies on Thursday do not mention a referendum on EU-UK relations, as promised by Cameron in earlier remarks. But they say the EU is mishandling the economic crisis and becoming less democratic."There are three major challenges confronting us today. First, the problems in the eurozone are driving fundamental change in Europe. Second, there is a crisis of European competitiveness, as other nations across the world soar ahead. And third, there is a gap between the EU and its citizens which has grown dramatically in recent years and which represents a lack of democratic accountability and consent that is - yes - felt particularly acutely in Britain," Cameron was due to say."There is a growing frustration that the EU is seen as something that is done to people rather than acting on their behalf. And this is being intensified by the very solutions required to resolve the economic problems. People are increasingly frustrated that decisions taken further and further away from them mean their living standards are slashed through enforced austerity or their taxes are used to bail out governments on the other side of the Continent," he was to add.
"More of the same will not secure a long-term future for the eurozone. More of the same will not see the EU keeping pace with the new powerhouse economies. More of the same will not bring the EU any closer to its citizens. More of the same will just produce more of the same," he was to say.The British leader was to warn that: "If we don't address these challenges, the danger is that Europe will fail and the British people will drift towards the exit."But he was also due to note: "I do not want that to happen. I want the European Union to be a success and I want a relationship between Britain and the EU that keeps us in it."In a nod to earlier warnings from France, Germany and the US, as well as from several British politicians, that the speech risks harming British interests, he also planned to add: "Europe's leaders have a duty to hear these concerns. And we have a duty to act on them ... There are always voices saying: 'Don't ask the difficult questions.' But it's essential for Europe - and for Britain - that we do."The warning by a US official last week prompted calls by eurosceptic British MPs that Washington should not meddle in British affairs. But for his part, US President Barack Obama repeated the line in a press communique following a phone call with Cameron on Thursday evening."The President underscored our close alliance with the United Kingdom and said that the United States values a strong UK in a strong European Union, which makes critical contributions to peace, prosperity, and security in Europe and around the world," the White House statement said.

Large blast hits Aleppo neighborhood in Syria: TV

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A large blast hit a neighborhood of the Syrian city of Aleppo on Friday and caused several casualties, state television said.It was unclear who was behind the attack.Syria TV said the explosion had been caused by a rocket fired by a "terrorist group" - a term it frequently uses to describe rebels in the 22-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.But opposition groups said Assad's forces were behind the blast, which hit the Muhafaza Sakaniya neighborhood in a western district of the city.Video from state television showed the side of a building collapsed into rubble that spilled into nearby streets. A crowd sifted through the wreckage as medics pulled bloodied bodies onto stretchers.Activists said the district, a government-held area of a city that has descended into a long and bloody stalemate between army and rebels, had been hit by a military air strike."The rebels do not have this capability yet," said Hameed Barrasho, an activist in Aleppo speaking by Skype. "We have several reports of a jet in the area before the strike. This is the regime trying to sow more chaos in the city."Syria's government restricts foreign media access to parts of the country it holds, making it difficult to confirm accounts by either side.Earlier in the week, twin blasts at the University of Aleppo killed more than 80 people. Each side blamed the other.

Syria: Twin suicide blasts hit south of Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) — Two car bombs exploded in southern Syria and a rocket slammed into a building in the north in a spike in civil war violence Friday that Syrian state media blamed on rebel fighters trying to topple President Bashar Assad. The rocket attack in the northern city of Aleppo and the suicide car bombings in Daraa, south of Damascus, occurred during a particularly bloody week nearly two years after an uprising began against Assad's regime. On Thursday, opposition activists said pro-government militia swept through a town in central Syria, torching houses and killing more than 100 people. Both sides have been blaming each other for the recent attacks, and it was the second time in a week that the government accused rebels of firing rockets. The state-run SANA news agency said the morning attack in Aleppo was carried out by terrorists, a term the regime uses for rebels. But the Local Coordination Committees of Syria, an activist group, and the Aleppo Media Center, a network of anti-regime activists, accused the government of launching an airstrike. On Tuesday, 87 people were killed in twin blasts at Aleppo University. The regime said rebels hit the university with rockets. Rebels said the deaths resulted from regime airstrikes.Syria's state-run TV claimed that shortly after the rocket hit the building in Aleppo, militants linked to an al-Qaida group detonated cars filled with explosives near a mosque in Daraa as worshippers were leaving following Friday prayers.Video broadcast on Syrian state TV showed several floors of the targeted building collapsed in a government-controlled area of Aleppo, Syria's largest urban center and main commercial hub. The video showed a man carrying a baby out of the damaged building and another man was seen clutching his head as blood ran down his forehead. Residents were also seen looking for people buried in the rubble. At least one injured person on a stretcher was seen being carried away in a Red Crescent ambulance.State TV reports said both attacks caused many casualties, but it was not immediately known how many people were killed or wounded in the two cities — both major fronts in the civil war.Government troops and rebels have been locked in a deadly stalemate in Aleppo and other areas in the north since last summer. Six months later, the rebels hold large parts of the city. Still, they have been unable to overcome the regime's far superior firepower. With the two sides deadlocked on the northern front, rebels have increasingly targeted state security facilities and government institutions in other parts of the country, including in the capital, Damascus. Suicide attacks have been a hallmark of the Islamic rebel units that have been fighting alongside other opposition fighters.State TV said fighters with Jabhat al-Nusra, a group the U.S. has declared a terrorist organization, were behind the twin blasts in Daraa.Daraa is the birthplace of the revolt that erupted in March 2011. It began as peaceful protests against Assad's rule but quickly turned into a civil war after a brutal government crackdown on dissent More than 60,000 people have been killed in the violence, according to a recent United Nation's estimate. Also on Friday, fighting between Syrian rebels and Assad's loyalists flared in a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus, killing 12 people and wounding at least 20 others, a U.N. refugee agency said. Children were among the casualties, according to a statement issued by the U.N. Relief and Works Agency. The agency called on both sides to "pull back from civilian areas, including refugee camps."
The Palestinian camp called Yarmouk has been the scene of heavy clashes between rebels and regime loyalists since mid-December, when opposition fighters moved into the camp during an attempt to storm the capital.About half of Yarmouk's 150,000 residents have fled since fighting erupted in mid-December, according to UNRWA, which administers Palestinian camps in the Middle East. Some sought refuge in neighboring Lebanon, and others found shelter in UNRWA schools in Damascus and other Syrian cities.
Dozens have been killed in the fighting, although the United Nations did not provide an exact figure of casualties in Yarmouk violence, which has included airstrikes and artillery shelling from the Syrian military.

Algeria: 60 hostages dead, missing in standoff

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) — Algeria's state news service says about 60 foreign hostages are unaccounted for in the standoff with Islamist militants now entering its third day.The news service said more than half the 132 foreign hostages had been freed, but the report could not account for the rest. The report Friday also said special forces had resumed negotiations after an assault Thursday at the gas plant deep in the Sahara.A Mauritanian news site that frequently receives messages from al-Qaida linked militants said the hostage-takers in Algeria had offered to trade two captive Americans for two jailed terror figures in the United States. One of the two, Omar Abdel Rahman, masterminded the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Muslims, Christians clash in southern Egypt

LUXOR, Egypt (AP) — Police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of Muslim protesters outside a church in southern Egypt Friday. The demonstrators were demanding an investigation into allegations that a Christian man sexually assaulted a 6-year-old girl.Residents in the province of Qena said four shops owned by Coptic Christians were torched overnight after villagers accused one of the store owners of molesting the young girl.
The clashes took place in the village of Marashda in Qena province.Residents said protesters threw stones at the local church after midday Friday Islamic prayers. Police fired tear gas to scatter the crowd, which is in one of Egypt's poorest areas.Qena security director Gen. Salah Mazid was quoted in state media saying that police are investigating the accusations against the merchant.Flare-ups of violence between Egypt's Christians and Muslims have become more frequent in the past two years in the wake of the country's uprising that ousted longtime President Hosni Mubarak but also weakened security across the nation.Egyptian Christians fear that the power vacuum that has followed Mubarak's overthrow is giving ultraconservatives and extremist Muslims a freer hand to attack churches and Coptic property, especially in poor areas of the nation.Egypt's Coptic Christians, who make up about 10 percent of the country's 85 million people, have long complained of discrimination by the state. They are the largest Christian community in the Middle East.Clashes between Copts and Muslims are usually sparked by church construction, land disputes or Muslim-Christian love affairs.

Palestinians despair over likely Netanyahu win

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Palestinian officials largely view Benjamin Netanyahu's expected re-election with despair, fearing the Israeli hard-liner's ambitious plans for settlement construction over the next four years could prove lethal to their dreams of a state. Some in Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' circle hold out hope that President Barack Obama will re-engage in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and, freed from domestic electoral considerations in his second term, get tougher with Netanyahu on settlements. One aide suggested Europe is ready to jump in with its own peace plan if Washington is not.But short of trying to rally international opinion, it seems Abbas can do little if Netanyahu wins Tuesday.Israeli polls indicate that a majority of seats in Israel's 120-member parliament will go to right-wing, pro-settler or Jewish ultra-Orthodox religious parties, with Netanyahu's Likud the largest among them. Netanyahu could comfortably form a coalition government with these parties, seen as his natural ideological allies.Even if he adds a centrist party to the mix, he's unlikely to shift course from the pro-settler policies of his current government.
Under Netanyahu, construction reportedly began on nearly 6,900 settlement homes in the West Bank, captured by Israel in the 1967 war, along with Gaza and east Jerusalem. The Palestinians want to set up a state in the three territories. That's a bit less than what was started by Netanyahu's predecessor, but many of the new homes are deeper in the West Bank, the Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now said this week. Thousands more apartments are in various stages of planning, Peace Now said, predicting an "explosion" of settlement construction in coming years.Since 1967, Israel has moved more than half a million of its citizens to the West Bank and east Jerusalem. The conflict with the Palestinians and the fate of the occupied lands, hotly debated in Israel for decades, were largely missing from Israeli political discourse this campaign season. The centrist Labor Party, which led peace talks with the Palestinians in the past, has shifted almost exclusively to domestic concerns, such as growing income gaps.A research department in the Palestine Liberation Organization, reviewing Israeli party platforms, concluded that most parties proposed to manage the conflict with the Palestinians, not end it."This appears to scorch all hopes for the internationally endorsed two-state solution," the department wrote in an internal memo distributed to Palestinian officials and foreign diplomats.Abbas aide Mohammed Ishtayeh said he and other senior officials have been watching the Israeli campaign closely."The first strong impression is that peace is not on the agenda of the Israeli parties, and it's clear that Netanyahu is winning," he said.A Netanyahu victory "will be hard for us because it means more and more building in the settlements." he added.Palestinians believe hopes for their state are slipping further away with each new settlement home, and that partition of the land between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River may soon no longer be possible.Abbas has warned in a series of meetings with visiting Israeli politicians and mayors in recent months that Netanyahu's policies will force Israelis and Palestinians to live in a single state, said an Abbas aide who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk about closed-door discussions."President Abbas warned Israeli party leaders that in the short run, this one state imposed by Netanyahu will be an apartheid state, but in the long run, our grandchildren will ask for equality," the aide said.Settlements are at the core of the paralysis in peace efforts talks since late 2008. Netanyahu refuses to freeze construction, rebuffing Abbas who says there is no point in negotiating while settlements steadily gobble up more of the occupied lands. The standoff is likely to continue, though the Palestinians believe their diplomatic leverage has improved. In November, the U.N. General Assembly recognized a state of Palestine in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem. The vote, while largely symbolic, affirmed the 1967 frontier which the Palestinians want to be the base line for future border talks. Netanyahu, while willing to negotiate, wont' recognize the 1967 lines as a point of reference and wants to keep all of Jerusalem and parts of the West Bank. Some Palestinian officials hope Obama will now be tougher with Netanyahu. Palestinians were disappointed in Obama's performance in his first term, with the president seen as having backed down in a showdown with Netanyahu over settlements.Earlier this week, there were signs of a more assertive president. An American columnist with close ties to the White House described Obama's disdain for Netanyahu, warning that Israel's relations with the U.S. could suffer if the Israeli government doesn't change its policies. The columnist, Jeffrey Goldberg, quoted the president as saying that "Israel doesn't know what its own best interests are."Nabil Shaath, another Abbas aide, said the Obama administration needs to become more assertive. The Americans "keep talking about negotiations and the need to restart the negotiations," said Shaath. "But what is needed is for the U.S. to pressure Israel to stop settlement activities and to go to real negotiations, to reach an agreement within six months."Europe might also get more involved, he said. France, Britain and Germany are working on a peace initiative and are trying to get the U.S. on board, he said, adding that "there is nothing written on paper."Palestinian officials have said they might also try to challenge a Netanyahu-led Israel in other ways, including by seeking war crimes charges at the International Criminal Court over settlement building. However, such a move would likely anger the U.S. and Abbas has not taken any concrete steps in that direction. While those around Abbas privately agonize over four more years of Netanyahu, many ordinary Palestinians seem indifferent to the outcome of the vote.Wajdi Sbeih, an electrical engineer from the West Bank town of Ramallah, said he'll watch the results Tuesday night, but won't care much. "The Labor Party came, the Likud came, but when it came to the Palestinians, they all had the same politics," he said.___Laub reported from Jerusalem. UN fails in attempt to restart Iran nuclear probe

IAEA official reports that Tehran will not grant access to the Parchin military facility

January 18, 2013, 1:32 pm 6

VIENNA — UN experts returned from Tehran on Friday without sealing a long-sought deal that would restart a probe of suspicions that Iran worked on atomic arms, adding to doubts that upcoming separate talks between six world powers and the Islamic Republic will succeed in reducing fears about Iran’s nuclear ambitions.Herman Nackaerts, who headed the team of International Atomic Energy Agency experts, said Friday that “Iran did not agree to allow [IAEA] inspectors into the Parchin military facility,” which is one focal point of the nuclear watchdog’s demands. He said the two sides would meet again in the Iranian capital Feb. 12. But even if those talks make progress, they will come too late for an Iran-six nation meeting tentatively scheduled for the end of this month. Those nations — the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany — had looked to the Tehran meeting as providing a signal for Iranian readiness to compromise when they sit down with Tehran. They hope those talks will result in an agreement by the Islamic Republic to stop enriching uranium to a higher level that could be turned relatively quickly into the fissile core of nuclear arms.Iran says it is enriching only to make nuclear reactor fuel and for scientific and medical purposes. This week Iran’s Foreign Ministry again cited a 2005 fatwa by the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, that banned nuclear weapons — a declaration the West has dismissed as a stalling tactic.
By compromising on the IAEA probe, Iran could have argued that the onus was now on the six powers to show some flexibility, temper their demands, and roll back US and European sanctions that have hit Iran’s critical oil exports and blacklisted the country from international banking networks.Although Tehran may hope that agreement to meet again next month with the IAEA shows it is interested in a deal, that may be too little for the six powers, who are growingly frustrated that their own talks with Tehran have barely progressed.Iran denies any interest in nuclear weapons, asserting that all its nuclear activities are peaceful. It stopped answering questions about allegations that it secretly did research and development work on such arms more than four years ago, saying it had provided enough information to disprove the claims. New attempts to restart the investigation have dragged on for more than a year, with Tehran insisting on a detailed outline of what UN experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency may or may not do in their investigations.Nackaerts, in brief arrival comments Friday said that “differences remain,” and no deal was reached.Agency officials say they are willing to continue negotiations but some privately have described the delays as a tactic to further stall the investigations. They are particularly concerned that such delays can hurt their efforts to investigate Parchin. The IAEA suspects that Iran has conducted live tests of conventional explosives at the site southeast of Tehran that could be used to detonate a nuclear charge and have cited satellite photos indicating a cleanup there. But critics of the investigations contend that apparent demolition at Parchin is due to a major construction project by the Iranians and does not mean Iran is sanitizing the area.
The agency already visited Parchin twice, the last time in 2005. But back then, it did not have access to satellite imagery that it now uses to pinpoint its search. On Friday, Nackaerts said that his team was again unable to go to the suspect site. Two diplomats familiar with his team’s negotiations said the main sticking points were Iran’s insistence that it be allowed to look at intelligence from the United States, Israel and other IAEA member nations that the agency is using in its probe and its demands that any investigation not be open-ended.But the agency cannot share intelligence without permission from the nation that provides it and says it cannot accept limits on its probe because one piece of evidence may lead to a whole new line of questions involving new sites, documents or officials. The diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss confidential information.

Japan's Abe nudges China over territorial disputes

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, pointing a finger at China, said on Friday that disputes plaguing Asia over who owns strings of tiny island groups in the region, had to be resolved legally.
Tokyo's relations with Beijing have chilled over the past few months because of bitter arguments over the ownership of islets in the East China Sea, enough to damage Japan's exports to its giant neighbor, home to the world's second largest economy.China has also been at odds with several other governments in the region, notably the Philippines and Vietnam, over separate groups of potentially energy-rich islands in the South China Sea, an issue which has caused rare public spats within the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)."There is no question that a rising China is a plus for Japan economically. It is also important for China to behave in a responsible manner in the international society," Abe told reporters in Jakarta at the end of his first overseas visit since becoming prime minister.Abe ended his trip - which also took him to Vietnam and Thailand - earlier than scheduled to return to Tokyo because of the hostage crisis in Algeria in which 14 Japanese workers are unaccounted for.The trip was seen as a push by Abe to boost relations with Southeast Asia, home to 600 million people and combined economies worth $2 trillion, which he hopes will help counterbalance the economic and military strength of China and provide Japan's limping economy with new sources of growth.By leaving early, Abe missed giving what had been billed as a policy speech on his new government's approach to Southeast Asia. But at the news conference he listed five principles of his ASEAN diplomacy, including an "open ocean, ruled not by power but by law ... and we and ASEAN will protect this with all our might", he said.It was a concern echoed by his host, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, whose country has no claim on any of the disputed islands but which has frequently expressed worries about the potential for the disputes to turn into military conflict."If there are any issues, whether in the South China Sea or East Asia or any part of Asia, the solution must be peaceful, not using military force and referring to international laws," Yudhoyono told reporters.(Additional reporting by Kiyoshi Takenaka in Tokyo, writing by Jonathan Thatcher; Editing by Ron Popeski)

Indonesian authorities battle floods in capital

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Authorities were working Friday to repair a dike that collapsed amid floods that swamped the Indonesian capital as the waters gradually receded from the main streets of the teeming city. But more monsoon rains were expected over Jakarta later Friday into Saturday, raising the prospect of fresh flooding, said Fadli, an official at the country's meteorology agency who goes by a single name.
Jakarta, a low-lying city on the sea, has long been prone to floods, but their scale has become worse over the last 10 years as infrastructure development has not kept pace with the city's growth. Other Southeast Asian cities, Bangkok and Manila especially, have also proved vulnerable to widespread floods in recent years.Authorities said the death toll had risen to 11, most electrocuted or drowned. Police were searching for at least three other people reported missing in the flooded basement of a building in central Jakarta.Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, from the city's disaster mitigation agency, said electricity supplies had been cut to several areas to prevent electrocutions."Our focus now is to save more lives," he said. While life slowly got back to normal downtown, tens of thousands remained affected by the waters elsewhere in the city of 14 million people. The police and army deployed rubber boats to help evacuate or bring supplies to people, said Jakarta Police Spokesman Col. Rikwanto.Elsewhere, hundreds of soldiers used backhoes to attempt to repair a collapsed canal dike that let floodwater pour into parts of downtown Jakarta on Thursday after hours of rains caused rivers and canals to burst their banks. At their peak, almost 250,000 people were affected by the floods, which covered about 30 percent of the city. They were the most widespread to hit the city since 2007, when almost 80 died and more than half of the city as affected.Unlike in 2007, Jakarta's downturn area was swamped this time around.Successive governments have done little to mitigate the threat of flooding, the latest made worse by heavy downpours Wednesday and Thursday that added pressure to rivers already swollen by a long monsoon season.Deforestation in the hills to the south of the city, chaotic planning and the rubbish that clogs the hundreds of waterways that crisscross the city are some of the factors behind the floods. Corrupt city officials turn an eye to building violations and lack the skills and ability to build flood defenses.Indrado, a resident in Central Jakarta, said the floods should cause a rethink."We cannot only blame the government," he said. "We the people also have to support it by not littering rivers."

GUN CONFISCATION BILL INTRODUCED

Gun Confiscation Bill Introduced in Congress

IRS credit to citizens who allow government to confiscate their firearms
Kurt Nimmo Infowars.com January 17, 2013
On January 13, 2013, H.R. 226 was introduced in the House of Representatives by Connecticut Democrat Rep. Rosa DeLauro. The bill will amend the 1986 IRS code and allow a credit if taxpayers “surrender” their guns to the government.Cited as the “Support Assault Firearms Elimination and Reduction for our Streets Act,” the proposed legislation represents another effort to convince citizens that they must voluntarily turn in their guns as a civic duty and to do their part to reduce “gun violence” and protect children, as Obama said yesterday. The bill is yet more evidence that federal and state governments are now pulling out all stops short of door-to-door confiscation in their coordinated effort to disarm the American people.Strikingly honest language included in the legislation specifies that the bill is part of the government’s “program to reduce the number of privately owned weapons,” in short, a program to disarm the American people. The bill contains an exhaustive list of so-called “assault weapons” that will garner a $2,000 tax credit, including the much demonized Bushmaster AR-15 allegedly used in the Newtown Sandy Hook massacre. The bill was referred to the Committee on Ways and Means on January 14, 2013.American taxpayers must reject such cynical enticements and stand together and support the Second Amendment against all attacks by Obama and Congress.

Video: New York Democrats Plan for Gun Confiscation

Kurt Nimmo Infowars.com January 17, 2013
Democrats in New York ran for cover in response to fallout after Gov. Andrew Cuomo said confiscation is the goal of new gun laws introduced in the state legislature. “Confiscation could be an option. Mandatory sale to the state could be an option,” Cuomo said in December. The plan was shelved after it was estimated it would cost over a billion dollars to “buyback” around a million so-called assault weapons in the state.
“The cost of confiscation would make it impracticable, if there’s anything approaching a million of them, putting aside the other issues that would be involved,’’ a Cuomo administration source told the New York Post. But despite the budget-busting cost of a mandatory buyback, Democrats in the state are determined to confiscate firearms from law-abiding New Yorkers, as the video below demonstrates.During an exchange on January 15 in the New York State Assembly, Republican Steven F. McLaughlin said the gun bill proposed by Democrats included provisions to confiscate weapons, but the proposals were rejected because they would have sunk the legislation. The exchange underscores the fact that Democrats in New York and Washington are not merely interested in outlawing what they erroneously describe as assault weapons, but are determined to confiscate them. This article was posted: Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 10:26 am

France Calls for Renewed Peace Talks Immediately After Elections

Hollande announced that "immediately after the Israeli elections you should expect a French-brokered peace initiative in the Middle East."

Amid a tiring military effort to stop islamist terrorists from gaining control of Mali, French President Francois Hollande spoke at a press conference Wednesday and touched on an entirely different topic relating to the Middle East -ֲֲ  the Israeli-PA peace process.ֲֲ
Hollande announced that "immediately after the Israeli elections you should expect a French-brokered peace initiative in the Middle East, in order to bring Israel and the Palestinians to the negotiating table," the newspaper "Ma'ariv" reported on Wednesday.ֲֲWith the Israeli election in less than a week, the international community is paying close attention to the outcome of the January 22nd voteֲֲ and are patiently waiting to find out what kind of coalition will be formed before they make any official pleas for negotiations to resume. Hollande said he hopes that an agreement to return to the negotiation table will come as early as March."The year 2013 should be the decision year on the issue of peace in the Middle East," he said.Holland's statement came after insiders in his government denied previous reports about a potential peace initiative brokered by France and Great Britain.ֲֲ Sources in the French government said that although the actions of France tend to be coordinated with the British government "because of the close proximity of the two countries", they stressed,ֲֲ "There is nothing currently on the table, contrary to reports published, as to a joint initiative between France and Britiain and there has been no formulation of this initiative."Against the backdrop of seemingly continuous rifts between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Barack Obama, the United States is also likelyֲֲ to increase pressure on Jerusalem. White House spokesman Tommy Vitor said yesterday,ֲֲ "Itֲֲ is up to the two sides, the Israelis and the Palestinians, to be serious and resume talks. This is in order to deal with the difficult issues that separate them and to make significant progress towards sustainable, lasting peace."ֲֲ
Vitor added: "The United States will continue to assist both sides in these efforts."

Op-Ed: WESTERN FRONT:Young Israelis Increasingly Turning Right

Bayit Yehudi is draining Lapid and Shas, not Likud anymore, says the writer.

The children of a nation are its future and Israel is one of the few First World countries where the youth trends conservative. This may be in part a demographic issue. The Israeli left is identified with the upper class bohos who don't have many children, while the Israeli working class and traditional religious populations do.
But it's also the consequence of generations coming of age in the shadow of terror.Current polling shows that the conservative Likud (think Republicans or Tories) has the support of 16 percent of Israelis aged 18-34. Bayit Yehudi/Jewish Home (think third party conservative split) is close behind with 15 percent. And the Labor Party, (think Democrats/Labour) is a distant third with nine percent.Israel is a young country in more ways than one and these voters make up 37 percent of registered voters. And more interestingly, secular young voter support for Jewish Home has ticked up by 20 percent. That's not the only good news on the table. Bayit Yehudi isn't draining Likud votes anymore, it's draining votes from Yesh Atid, the fake left-wing party fronted by an idiot anchorman, the son of a famous leftist with delusions of grandeur. And in even better news, it's draining votes from Shas. The corrupt Shas Mafia enabled the left to pull off the Peace Process, siphoning votes from Middle Eastern Jews in various manipulative ways. Its evil genius, Aryeh Deri was locked up and a law was passed specifically to prevent him from returning to politics, but he's back and cheerfully announcing that he intends to move Shas way to the left calling for a long-term interim agreement with the Palestinian Authority."Shas is not right or left," Deri announced, which means it's left. But Deri's genius plan of class warfare and soliciting Arab votes has not exactly taken off.Shas ads claim that the party is here for "the Have Nots", which is a laughable joke. And Deri went to campaign in an Arab village. The Galilee village of Abu Sanan became an unlikely host to a campaign, event held by the haredi Shas party one Wednesday night.Shas leader Aryeh Deri insisted during the event that he "feels at home here," and called for a joint Jewish-Arab fight for equality.Interior Minister Eli Yishai, who was in attendance as well, said that "Inshallah, God willing, we will have our victory party right here."One sure vote comes from Muhammad Taha of the Manda village, who has been faithfully voting for Shas for the past 20 years. "Some 500 votes in the village are already guaranteed," he declared with confidence. "This time I promise a surprise for Shas."It's a wonder that Yediot actually published this with a straight face considering that votes in many Arab villages are "bought" beforehand, both in party primaries and general elections. These votes have nothing to do with party merit or actual support. Guaranteed votes are actually "guaranteed", signed, sealed and delivered. This was how the Israeli left stayed in power for so long and how it still manages to win far more than its share.Shas pulling stunts like these is a sign of desperation and the party has something to be desperate about. Ovadya Yosef is 92 and without him, the party will lose much of its influence and split between conservative Sephardic elders and apparatchiks like Deri.Current polling shows Shas pulling in only 8 seats, suggesting that many of its voters are disregarding its holy app and amulets and looking for real change and security. But all this would not be sufficient without a dumb stunt by the Israeli Anti-Israel Left and this one is a real doozy. On December 26, 2012, a new Facebook page was created, called "Real Democracy." The basic idea behind it is that Israelis "give up" their vote in the upcoming elections to any of the millions of Palestinians under Israeli rule who have no right to vote. It's all done on Facebook. The Israeli posts a status saying he/she's willing to do it, the Palestinian tells him/her who to vote for. Some of them took part in a similar campaign called "Give your vote" in the 2010 elections in England. In that campaign, thousands of Englishmen gave their votes to people in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Ghana "who are directly affected by UK policies."Setting aside the moral and ethical issues with this, not to mention the common sense problem that Palestinian Arab nationalists claim to want a state, not a vote in Israeli elections, that could have been achieved if they had agreed to annexation, here's the practical result. The sort of people doing this would likely vote for Meretz, a leftist Jewish party that does form coalition with Labor. The Palestinian Arabs are likely to vote for Balad, an Arab/Jewish Communist party that does not enter into coalitions, making this entire exercise a wasted vote that further diminishes the influence of the left. But this whole election is a case study in the diminishing influence of the Israeli left.Reposted with writer's permission: http://frontpagemag.com/2013/dgreenfield/young-israelis-increasingly-turning-right/

Polls give hard-line bloc edge in Israel elections

JERUSALEM (AP) — Polls give hawkish and religious parties led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a comfortable edge over their center-left rivals ahead of next week's parliamentary elections.
Surveys published Wednesday night and on Thursday have Netanyahu's Likud Beiteinu list winning 32 to 37 of parliament's 120 seats, making it the best positioned to form Israel's next government.A Dialog service poll gives Netanyhu's bloc 64 seats, versus 56 for the opposing camp. A total of 756 people were polled; the error margin was 3.7 percent points.New Wave Research's poll gave the hard-line bloc 67 seats. Its survey of 810 people had a 3.5 percentage point error margin. The Maagar Mohot survey gave the hawkish bloc 72 seats. Its poll of 596 people had an error margin of 4.5 percentage points.

Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovich, Rabbi of the Western Wall and Holy Sites, issued a plea Thursday for protection for Jewish worshipers. He turned to police commanders in the Jerusalem region and asked them to take immediate action to restore calm and safety to Jewish holy sites.Rabbi Yosef Shwinger of the National Center for Development of Holy Sites joined his call to police to ensure worshipers’ safety. The rabbis’ cry follows several recent incidents in which Arab terrorists have launched large-scale assaults on Rachel’s Tomb (Kever Rachel) as Jews were praying at the holy site. Worshipers have been forced to remain inside the tomb as firebombs and rocks rain down on the surrounding walls. While no terrorist group claimed responsibility for the mass attacks, similar attacks portrayed as “spontaneous uprisings” have in the past been found to have been coordinated by local terror cells.Major assaults on the tomb began months ago after years of relative quiet at the holy site. A short time earlier the Palestinian Authority announced that it would ask the UNESCO to recognize Rachel’s Tomb as a PA heritage site. The PA has previously claimed that the 3,500 tomb, the burial place of the Biblical matriarch Rachel, is actually a mosque.Sources in the National Center for Development of Holy Sites noted that the attacks threaten to undo years of hard work. Over recent years much time and money has been invested in the Rachel’s Tomb compound in an effort to ease the visiting experience for the hundreds of thousands of worshipers who come to the site each year.Jerusalem Police Chief Yossi Pariente said Thursday that police are working with the IDF to stop the phenomenon of assaults on worshipers. Police will use more of the means at their disposal in order to drive attackers away from the holy site and arrest them, he said.

Hebrew University has made a name for itself as one of earth’s top universities — and now its fame has spread to space. The university has joined the ranks of people and places whose names appear on minor planets, with the International Astronomical Union (IAU) naming an asteroid in honor of the university – with the asteroid appropriately name “Hebrewu.”Asteroid 271,763 was discovered by David H. Levy and Wendee Levy from Arizona, and Tom Glinos from Canada. Levy is a Canadian astronomer and science writer famous for his co-discovery of the Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9, which collided with the planet Jupiter in 1994 in the first collision of two solar system bodies ever observed.Levy wanted to name an asteroid after the Hebrew University since completing a PhD at its English Department in June 2010. His dissertation explored the relationship between the night sky and the works of Shakespeare and other writers in the early modern period of English literature. In a letter to the university describing the naming, Levy wrote, “Congratulations on being one of the few universities to be honored with a world in space. We have wanted to do this ever since I was awarded a PhD in June 2010 by the Hebrew University, one of the leading research institutions in the world. Perhaps someday the university, which I am proud to call an alma mater, will be able to put this new piece of real estate to good academic use. In the meantime, it is a world with sunrises and sunsets, much smaller but similar to our own.”Hebrew University President Prof. Menahem Ben-Sasson said, “The Hebrew University is delighted by Dr. Levy’s extraordinary gesture and proud to join the exclusive list of institutions whose names are recorded among the stars. Alluding to that which transpires beyond our planet’s atmosphere, this gesture aptly symbolizes the Hebrew University’s ambition to break through the limits of knowledge and research.”Only a few asteroids have been named for people or places in Israel, including its capital city Jerusalem, its first astronaut Ilan Ramon, and the writer and satirist Ephraim Kishon. It’s estimated that fewer than 20 universities worldwide have an asteroid named after them.
Located in the asteroid belt that stretches between the orbit of Mars and Jupiter, Hebrewu poses no threat to Planet Earth and is not expected to draw near any time soon, the IAU said. One of the most successful comet discoverers in history, Levy has discovered or co-discovered 22 comets — nine of them using his own backyard telescopes — and more than 150 asteroids.

Massacre of over 100 reported in Syria's Homs

BEIRUT (Reuters) - More than 100 people were shot, stabbed or possibly burned to death by government forces in the Syrian city of Homs, a monitoring group said on Thursday, and fierce fighting raged across the country. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said women and children were among the 106 people killed by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad forces who stormed Basatin al-Hasawiya, a poor district on the edge of Homs, on Tuesday. The massacre in the central city came the same day twin explosions killed over 80 people at Aleppo's university in the north, according to the group.Reuters cannot independently confirm reports due to reporting restrictions in Syria.Syrian warplanes and troops pursued a countrywide offensive on Thursday, activists and state media said, bombing rebel-held areas and clashing with insurgents who have pushed into cities.Government forces clashed on Thursday with insurgents in the cities of Deraa, Hama, Homs, Aleppo, Damascus and east of Deir al-Zor, the Observatory said. Only the coastal Assad strongholds of Latakia and Tartous were spared violence.Opposition activists said 15 people, including 7 children, were killed when an air strike hit a family home in Husseiniyeh, a suburb on the outskirts of the capital. They sent Reuters footage of people dragging the limp bodies of children out of the rubble.
In Hama province, the government said it had secured some areas and displaced families were returning to the area of Zor Abi Zaid after armed forces "cleansed the area completely of terrorists", a term authorities use for the rebels.Activists and Turkish news agencies reported renewed clashes on the Syrian border town of Ras al-Ain, where rebel forces have been fighting armed Kurdish groups for control. The local Turkish Dogan news agency said one man on the Turkish side of the border was wounded by a stray bullet overnight and that schools in the area had been closed due to the clashes on the Syrian side.In the power vacuum, some Kurdish groups are trying to assert control over parts of Syria through fights with rebels and government forces. The Observatory said clashes broke out between Kurdish militants and the Syrian army in Rameilan, a town in the northeast.
FAMILY OF 17 REPORTED KILLED
Activists said 17 members of the Khazam family had been killed during Tuesday's raid on Basatin al-Hasawiya."The Observatory has the names of 14 members of one family, including three children, and information on other families who were completely killed, including one of 32 people," Rami Abdelrahman, head of the Observatory, told Reuters."This needs to be investigated by the United Nations," said Abdelrahman, a Syrian who has documented human rights violations in Syria since 2006 and now reports on killings by both sides. The United Nations says 60,000 have been killed in the 22-month-old conflict. Several massacres have been reported, most blamed on pro-Assad forces but some also on rebel fighters. The town of Houla in Homs province was the scene in May 2011 of the killings of 108 people, including nine children and 34 women, which U.N. monitors blamed on the army and pro-Assad militia. The United Nations sent observers to Syria in April 2011 but after several attacks on their convoys they left in August, complaining both sides had chosen the path of war.Abu Yazen, an opposition activist in Homs, said the rebel Free Syrian Army occasionally entered the farmland of Basatin al-Hasawiya to attack a nearby military academy.
"Assad's forces punish civilians for allowing the rebels to enter the area," he said. Other activists said the raid was carried out by pro-Assad militia. The government and opposition blame each other for two explosions at Aleppo's university on Tuesday which killed at least 87 people, many of them students attending exams, in the deadliest attack on civilians to hit the commercial hub since rebels laid siege to it over the summer.
U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said the attack was "beyond horrific"."According to eyewitnesses, regime jets launched the strikes," she said on her Twitter account.Russia, which has backed Assad throughout the revolt both in rhetoric and through its veto of U.N. Security Council resolutions condemning Assad, dismissed suggestions Damascus was behind the explosions."I cannot imagine any bigger blasphemy," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists during a visit to Tajikistan.

Algerian forces launch operation to break desert siege

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Twenty-five foreign hostages escaped and six were killed on Thursday when Algerian forces launched an operation to free them at a remote desert gas plant, Algerian sources said, as one of the biggest international hostage crises in decades unfolded.Fast-moving details of the military operation to free the hostages were difficult to confirm. Algeria's official APS news agency said that the military had freed four foreign hostages, giving no further information.A local source told Reuters six foreign hostages were killed along with eight captors when the Algerian military fired on a vehicle being used by the gunmen. An Algerian security source said the 25 foreign hostages had escaped.Mauritania's ANI news agency, which has been in constant contact with the kidnappers, said seven hostages were still being held: two Americans, three Belgians, one Japanese and one British citizen. The standoff began when gunmen calling themselves the Battalion of Blood stormed the gas plant on Wednesday morning. They said they were holding 41 foreigners and demanded a halt to a French military operation against fellow al Qaeda-linked Islamist militants in neighboring Mali.ANI and Qatar-based Al Jazeera reported that 34 of the captives and 15 of their captors had been killed when government forces fired from helicopters at a vehicle. Those death tolls, far higher than confirmed by the local source, would contradict the reports that large numbers of foreigners escaped alive.
Britain and Norway, whose oil firms BP and Statoil run the plant jointly with the Algerian state oil company, said they had been informed by the Algerian authorities that a military operation was under way but did not provide details. As many as 180 Algerian hostages had also been held but managed to flee, the local source said. The incident dramatically raises the stakes in the French military campaign in neighboring Mali, where hundreds of French paratroopers and marines are launching a ground offensive against rebels after air strikes began last week.Algerian Interior Minister Daho Ould Kablia said the kidnappers were led by Mokhtar Belmokhtar, a veteran Islamist guerrilla who fought Soviet forces in Afghanistan in the 1980s and had set up his own group in the Sahara after falling out with other local al Qaeda leaders.A holy warrior-cum-smuggler dubbed "The Uncatchable" by French intelligence and "Mister Marlboro" by some locals for his illicit cigarette-running business, Belmokhtar's links to those who seized towns across northern Mali last year are unclear. The hostage takers earlier allowed some prisoners to speak to the media, apparently to put pressure on Algerian forces not to storm the compound. An unidentified hostage who spoke to France 24 television said prisoners were forced to wear explosive belts and captors had threatened to blow up the plant.
Two hostages, identified as British and Irish, spoke to Al Jazeera television and called on the Algerian army to withdraw from the area to avoid casualties."We are receiving care and good treatment from the kidnappers. The (Algerian) army did not withdraw and they are firing at the camp," the British man said. "There are around 150 Algerian hostages. We say to everybody that negotiations is a sign of strength and will spare many any loss of life."
NUMBERS UNCONFIRMED
The precise number and nationalities of foreign hostages could not be confirmed, with some countries reluctant to release information that could be useful to the captors.Britain said one of its citizens was killed in the initial storming on Wednesday and "a number" of others were held. The militants said seven Americans were among their hostages, a figure U.S. officials said they could not confirm.Norwegian oil company Statoil said nine of its Norwegian staff and three Algerian employees were captive. Britain's BP, which operates the plant with Statoil and Algerian state oil company Sonatrach, said some of its staff were held but would not say how many or their nationalities.Japanese media said five workers from Japanese engineering firm JGC Corp. were held, a number the company did not confirm. Paris has not said whether any hostages were French. Vienna said one hostage was Austrian, Dublin said one was Irish and Bucharest said an unspecified number were Romanian.Spanish oil company Cepsa said it had begun to evacuate personnel from elsewhere in Algeria.Paris said the Algeria attack demonstrated it was right to intervene in Mali: "We have the flagrant proof that this problem goes beyond just the north of Mali," French ambassador to Mali Christian Rouyer told France Inter radio.President Francois Hollande has received public backing from Western and African allies who fear that al Qaeda, flush with men and arms from the defeated forces of Libya's Muammar Gaddafi, is building a desert haven in Mali, a poor country helpless to combat fighters who seized its north last year. However, there is also some concern in Washington and other capitals that the French action in Mali could provoke a backlash worse than the initial threat by militants in the remote Sahara. The militants, communicating through established contacts with media in neighboring Mauritania, said they had dozens of men armed with mortars and anti-aircraft missiles in the compound and had rigged it with explosives.
"We hold the Algerian government and the French government and the countries of the hostages fully responsible if our demands are not met, and it is up to them to stop the brutal aggression against our people in Mali," read one statement carried by Mauritanian media. They condemned Algeria's secularist government for letting French warplanes fly over its territory to Mali and shutting its border to Malian refugees.
PRESSING ON
The attack in Algeria did not stop France from pressing on with its campaign in Mali. It said on Thursday it now had 1,400 troops on the ground in Mali, and combat was underway against the rebels that it first began targeting from the air last week."There was combat yesterday, on the ground and in the air. It happened overnight and is under way now," said Le Drian. Residents said a column of about 30 French Sagaie armored vehicles set off on Wednesday toward rebel positions from the town of Niono, 300 km (190 miles) from the capital, Bamako. The French action last week came as a surprise but received widespread international support in public. Neighboring African countries planning to provide ground troops for a U.N. force by September have said they will move faster to deploy them.Nigeria, the strongest regional power, sent 162 soldiers on Thursday, the first of an anticipated 906."The whole world clearly needs to unite and do much more than is presently being done to contain terrorism, with its very negative impact on global peace and security," President Goodluck Jonathan said.Germany, Britain and the Netherlands have offered transport aircraft to help ferry in African troops. Washington has said it is considering what support it can offer. Many inhabitants of northern Mali have welcomed the French action, though some also fear being caught in the cross-fire. The Mali rebels who seized Timbuktu and other oasis towns in northern Mali last year imposed Islamic law, including public amputations and beheadings that angered many locals.A day after launching the campaign in Mali, Hollande also ordered a failed rescue in Somalia on Saturday to free a French hostage held by al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militants since 2009. Al Shabaab said on Thursday it had executed hostage Denis Allex. France said it believed he died in the rescue.(Reporting by Lamine Chikhi; Writing by Peter Graff; Editing by Giles Elgood)

Floods paralyze Indonesian capital, heavy rains continue

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Heavy monsoon rain triggered severe flooding in large swathes of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, on Thursday, bringing the city to a halt with many government offices and businesses forced to close because staff could not get to work.At least 20,000 people were forced from their homes in the capital and weather officials warned the rain could get worse over the next few days."Rain will continue to fall in the greater Jakarta area ... the potential for flooding remains," a spokesman for the Meteorology Climatology Meteorology and Geophysics Agency told Reuters. He said rain was expected to remain heavy in mountains above Jakarta, often the source of floodwater.Four people were reported to have been killed, according to the National Disaster Prevention Agency, which urged residents to stay at home to reduce traffic congestion on blocked roads.Torrential rain was reported across much of the country, including the main island of Java and heavily agricultural area of southern Sumatra. However, officials said there had been no reports of any serious damage to key crops such as rice, sugar and palm oil.An estimated more than 175 mm (7 inches) of rain fell in one part of west Jakarta between 7 a.m. and midday."In 30 years of my life here it has never flooded, ever. This is the very first time," said Ninuk, 30, a resident of central Jakarta.Floods even forced the country's anti-corruption agency to move some of its most prominent prison inmates, including a former deputy head of the central bank, to a notorious women's prison, Pondok Bambu, in east Jakarta, a spokesman said. The flooding will put pressure on the capital's popular new governor, Joko Widodo, who came to office last October with promises to work to fix a huge array of basic infrastructure problems that bedevil the city of about 10 million people."The government has to do something to prevent floods ... If it needs to build stronger dykes, then build them," said Syaiful Bakhri, a taxi driver whose car was stuck in the flood. In the centre of Jakarta, where streets are jammed at the best of times, long lines of idled cars waited for waist-deep water to recede. An inflatable dinghy provided by emergency services ferried people to safety across water dividing the heart of the city. The city's main airport was open but many roads leading to it were reportedly blocked. Most commuter trains and buses were suspended. The Jakarta Stock Exchange did open but trading was light.Flooding was even reported at the presidential palace, forcing the postponement of a meeting between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his visiting Argentine counterpart, Cristina Fernandez.(Additional reporting by Michael Taylor and Janeman Latul; Writing by Jonathan Thatcher; Editing by Robert Birsel)
