Sunday evening at sundown is the start of the holiday of Sukkot (Tabernacles), one of the three major festivals (shlosha regalim) of the Jewish calendar in which, in Temple days,  the Jewish People were enjoined to "go up to Jerusalem." Sukkot, coming immediately after the solemn month of Elul and the High Holydays, is the holiday on which the Bible encourages all of us to "be wholly happy".In recognition of that joy, the entire Halled -praise - prayer is said each day of the holiday.In Biblical times as today, it was a harvest holiday for summer crops and grapes, a water holiday that included prayers for winter rains, gratitude for the land of milk and honey, and as always in Judaism, remembrance: reenacting the years in the desert when the Israelites dwelled in sukkot (booths), protected by G-d's clouds of glory by day and a column of fire at night. That is done by eating and spending time, entertaining, lighting holiday candles  - and even sleeping - in a sukkah.Israel was in the throes of a bulding boom for the past week, as everyone – observant and less observant – prepared for the holiday by building and decorating Sukkot and choosing the “four species.” Large market areas were set up for buying wood, schach (the "roof" of the sukkah which must be of plant origin and not be attached so that its temporary nature is clear), the four species - and masses of people could be observed spending hours there checking for halakhically problematic imperfections. Of course, complete sets that have been checked are available, but the mitzva - and fun -  is in the personal checking, say those who have the know-how.For basic information on building a kosher sukkah, click here. Thousands protest against French austerity budget

BRUSSELS - French President Francois Hollande faced his first serious public backlash after up to 50,000 lined the streets of Paris on Sunday (30 September) in protest against his €37 billion austerity budget.
Organisers of the event, which brought together around 60 left-wing groups, claimed that 50,000 protestors took to the streets to denounce the cuts programme."Today is the day the French people launch a movement against the politics of austerity," said the Front de Gauche president, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who finished fourth in the Presidential elections.On Tuesday (2 October) deputies in the National Assembly will debate the fiscal compact, with a number of members from the ruling Socialist and Green parties expected to defy the government's majority.French prime minister Jean-Marc Ayrault accused the protesters of jeopardising the French economy and the stability of the euro. Opposing the fiscal compact would “risk aggravating the crisis”, he said, adding that “the ambiguity of saying 'non' is also something that could lead to the end of the euro."The protest came days after President Hollande unveiled a package of spending cuts and tax hikes to plug a €37 billion hole in the country's public finances. The package is supposed to reduce France's budget deficit to 3 percent in 2013 from 4.5 percent this year, bringing in €30 billion for the treasury.As expected, the budget included a new 75 percent top tax rate on those earning over €1 million per year, which opponents claim will see thousands of France's richest people move to the UK and elsewhere for tax purposes. Hollande's budget has also shied away from making any cuts to government jobs.The budget includes €25 billion of cuts in government spending alongside a further €20 billion in extra taxes levied on businesses and the rich.Statistics revealed last week that France’s national debt to GDP ratio had risen to 91 percent of GDP, a level described as “critical” by Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici, and which is far higher than the 60% threshold in the EU's Stability and Growth Pact. The country also lost its coveted AAA credit rating in January.During his election campaign, Hollande had promised to re-open talks on the fiscal compact treaty devised by former President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The treaty, which was agreed at a summit in December 2011, foresees a balanced budget rule for national constitutions.
However, Hollande is now expected to focus on securing a detailed EU growth and jobs plan, including front-loading the use of EU structural funds, project bonds and a youth guarantee scheme.

Hamas political chief Khaled Mashaal confirmed on Sunday that he would be stepping down as the head of the Islamist extremist group. He said he would be staying away, “at least temporarily,” but intimated that he may return to the movement’s leadership one day.Mashaal made the comments during an interview with the Arabic daily al-Quds al-Arabi alongside his speech at a conference of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party in Ankara. Mashaal was the official guest of Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who formally secured his position as leader of the Islamist-rooted party at the gathering.

In the interview with al-Quds al-Arabi, Mashaal cited a desire to temporarily recuse himself from the Hamas leadership, where he has been the official chairman of the Hamas political bureau or leader of the movement “in exile.” Last week, reports suggested a difference of opinion between himself and the Gaza-based Hamas leaders as the reason for his stepping down.Mashaal claimed that he enjoys “a great deal of support” among Hamas leaders in the strip and downplayed reported strains between himself and Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas prime minister in Gaza, calling the rumors “inaccurate.”He said Hamas was “strong and solid” and predicted it would become “stronger and tougher.”Mashaal also used the opportunity to criticize the Egyptian leadership for closing Gaza’s smuggling tunnels, noting that the underground tunnels help bring goods and necessities to residents of the strip who are under siege due to Israel’s blockade. He said Egypt’s clamp down had caused shortages of many goods, notably fuel.The Hamas chief said it was the desperate economic conditions in Gaza that had sparked the use of smuggling tunnels — there was “no alternative.” He said the Gaza leadership would use “official channels” to bring in goods, like medicine and building materials, if it were allowed to.Mashaal received a standing ovation for his address at the conference of the Justice and Development Party in Ankara.In his speech, he promised continued “resistance” against Israel, saying it was the only road to achieving a Palestinian state. He said all other international attempts to “pressure Israel” had failed.“We are committed to liberating our land and taking back Jerusalem, dismantling the settlements and bringing back refugees, freeing the prisoners jailed by the Zionist occupier and establishing a real Palestinian state, with true sovereignty in spite of the enemy,” he said.Mashaal has been a leader of Hamas since 1996, and served as its main figurehead since the assassination of Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi, one of the movement’s co-founders, in 2004. Part of the Hamas leadership in exile, Mashaal was based in Damascus from 2001 to 2012, when the Syrian uprising caused the group’s leadership to relocate to Qatar.Hamas, a terror group that avowedly seeks the destruction of Israel, led a campaign of suicide bombings against the Jewish state, especially in the second intifada from late 2000. It grabbed power in Gaza in 2007 in a violent takeover from Mahmoud Abbas’s Palestinian Authority, having won more seats that Fatah in Palestinian parliamentary elections the previous year. Hamas and Abbas’s Fatah faction have been engaged in awkward, on-off unity talks in recent years.The tension between the Gaza and foreign-based leadership of Hamas has been a contentious issue in the past. Analysts say the foreign-based leadership was more ideological and hard-lined while the local leaders tended to be more moderate in recent years.A report last week in the London-based newspaper Al-Hayat said Moussa Abu Marzouk, Hamas’s current deputy leader-in-exile, is set to take over the leadership from Mashaal, who has not sought reelection in polling that has been under way for the past five months. ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey and Egypt sought to boost their alliance in a turbulent region on Sunday, unleashing harsh criticism of the Syrian regime and pledging joint support for the Palestinian cause.

Egypt’s new president, Mohammed Morsi, addressed a major congress of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling party, amid signs that a partnership between their two countries is emerging, and said they both plan to stand by Palestinians and the Syrian people.“Our common goal is to support other people who are standing up against their administrations or regimes, to support Palestine and the Syrians in their efforts,” Mursi said.“The events in Syria are the tragedy of the century,” Morsi said. “We will be on the side of the Syrian people until the bloodshed ends, the cruel regime is gone and Syrian people reach their just rights.”In his speech to the congress, which is marking the ruling Justice and Development party’s decade in power, Erdogan promised that Turkey, which is host to some 88,000 Syrian refuges as well as Syrian opposition groups, would continue to support the Syrian people wanting to oust the regime of President Bashar Assad.He appealed to Russia, China and Iran to stop backing the regime.“We call on Russia, China as well as Iran: please review your stance. History will not forgive those who stand together with cruel regimes,” he said.With Khaled Mashaal, the leader of the Palestinian Islamic militant group Hamas also present, Erdogan said Turkey is determined to speak out against what he called Israel’s “state terrorism” in the region and praised Morsi for his support to Palestinians.“Through Morsi’s leadership, our Palestinian brothers in Gaza and in all other Palestinian cities are able to breathe easily,” he said.Erdogan said Turkey would not reconcile with former ally Israel until it lifts its blockade of Gaza and apologizes for an attack in 2010 that killed nine mostly Turkish pro-Palestinian activists in a raid on a flotilla that tried to breach the blockade.Israel has refused to apologize but has expressed regret for the loss of lives. Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman’s disparaging remarks on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas at the UN General Assembly are not in Israel’s best interests, said Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Sunday.“If Mahmoud Abbas and Salam Fayyad lose control of the territories, as Liberman dreams will happen, then Hamas will rule in their place,” Barak reportedly said in a closed meeting, according to Army Radio. “Liberman’s remarks harm Israel’s interests,” he added.Barak said that he intends to ask Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to convene an urgent meeting to coordinate government policy towards the Palestinian Authority.The foreign minister harshly criticized Abbas’s speech before the UN last week, calling the PA president “the main and biggest obstacle currently facing the peace process” and stating that “as long as Abbas continues to hold office, there is no chance that Israelis and Palestinians will come to an agreement.”In a Sunday Haaretz interview, Liberman labeled the speech, where Abbas referred to Israel as an “occupying power” and accused the government of supporting “ethnic cleansing” and “settler crimes,” as “worse than a slap in the face.”

Azerbaijan has looked into the possibility of assisting Israel with a strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, a report Sunday by Reuters reveals.The report, published by correspondent Thomas Grove, is based on "local officials with extensive knowledge of Azerbaijan’s military policy." According to these sources, Azeri authorities have, along with Israel, looked into how Azeri air force bases and the drones at its disposal could help the IAF to carry out attacks in Iran.“That is a far cry from the massive firepower and diplomatic cover that Netanyahu wants from Washington. But, by addressing key weaknesses in any Israeli war plan -- notably on refueling, reconnaissance and rescuing crews -- such an alliance might tilt Israeli thinking on the feasibility of acting without U.S. help,” says the report.However, noted the report, Israel will along the way have to overcome many Azeri concerns, as it is uncertain whether the president of Azerbaijan would risk harming his country's oil industry. In addition, support by Azerbaijan for an Israeli strike may trigger a revolt in the Arab and Muslim world, noted the report.At the same time, two Azeri former military officers with links to serving personnel and two Russian intelligence sources told Reuters that Azerbaijan and Israel have been looking at how Azeri bases and intelligence could serve in a possible strike on Iran."Where planes would fly from --- from here, from there, to where? - that's what's being planned now," a security consultant with contacts at Azeri defense headquarters in Baku said. "The Israelis ... would like to gain access to bases in Azerbaijan."Rasim Musabayov, an Azeri lawmaker and a member of parliament's foreign affairs committee, told Reuters that he understood that Azerbaijan would probably feature in any Israeli plans against Iran, at least as a contingency for refueling its attack force.Several months ago, the Iranian Foreign Ministry called in the Azerbaijani ambassador to protest Baku's alleged cooperation with Israel's Mossad.
The meeting was apparently inspired by a report in the London Times that Mossad agents were using Azerbaijan as a “hub” from which to conduct operations and spy on Iran. The report quoted an anonymous alleged agent who called himself “Shimon,” who said that Azerbaijan was “ground zero for Israeli intelligence work. Our presence here is quiet, but substantial. We have increased our presence in the past year, and it gets us very close to Iran. This is a wonderfully porous country.” Foreign Policy magazine reported in March that Israel has purchased an Azeri airfield on Iran's northern border, prompting the United States to watch very closely, believing Israel may use the site as a springboard for an attack on Iran's nuclear plants, or as a landing and refueling spot following one. Iran swipe at Web brings angry reply

TEHRAN (AP) — Iran's cyber monitors often tout their fight against the West's "soft war" of influence through the Web, but trying to block Google's popular Gmail appeared to be a swipe too far.Complaints piled up — even from email-starved parliament members — and forced authorities Sunday to double down on their promises to create a parallel Web universe with Tehran as its center.The strong backlash and the unspecific pledges for an Iran-centric Internet alternative to the Silicon Valley powers and others highlight the two sides of the Islamic Republic's ongoing battles with the Web. It's spurred another technological mobilization that fits neatly into Iran's self-crafted image as the Muslim world's showcase for science, including sending satellites into orbit, claiming advances in cloning and stem cell research and facing down the West over its nuclear program.But there also are the hard realities of trying to reinvent the Web. Iran's highly educated and widely tech-savvy population is unlikely to warm quickly to potential clunky homegrown browsers or email services. And then there's the potential political and economic fallout of trying to close the tap on familiar sites such as Gmail."Some problems have emerged through the blocking of Gmail," Hussein Garrousi, a member of a parliamentary committee on industry, was quoted Sunday by the independent Aftab-e Yazd daily. What he apparently meant was that many lawmakers were angry and missing their emails.He said that parliament would summon the minister of telecommunications for questioning if the ministry did not lift the Gmail ban, which was imposed last week in respond to clips on Google-owned YouTube of a film mocking the Prophet Muhammad that set off deadly protests across the Islamic world.

Even many newspapers close to the government complained over the email disruptions. On Saturday, the Asr-e Ertebat weekly reported that Iranians had paid a total of $4.5 million to purchase proxy services to reach blocked sites, including Facebook and YouTube, over the past month.Iranian authorities — perhaps recognizing the risks at hand — decided against taking a symbolic twin shot at Google and cut access to the Web browser in a country with 32 million Internet users among a population of 75 million, according to official statistics.That would rank online Iran among the world's top 20 in terms of sheer numbers of users, and equivalent to some European countries in per capita Web use at more than 40 percent, according to the private monitoring group Internet World Stats. The World Bank, however, puts Iran's Internet link rate at just 21 percent last year.The U.S. is among the world's highest at more than 75 percent.Iran's deputy telecoms minister, Ali Hakim Javadi, told reporters that Iranian authorities were considering lifting the Gmail ban. But he also used the opportunity to again promise development of Iran's domestic alternatives: the Fakhr ("Pride") search engine and the Fajr ("Dawn") email, Aftab-e Yazd reported.When reporters noted the quality of Gmail services, Javadi quipped: "If there is Mercedes Benz on the street, that doesn't mean everyone drives a Mercedes."Iran's clerical establishment has long signaled its intent to get citizens off of the international Internet — which they say promotes Western values — and onto a "national" and "clean" domestic network. Earlier this year, Iran's police chief, Esmail Ahmadi Moghadam, called Google an "instrument of espionage" rather than a search engine.But it is unclear whether Iran has the technical capacity to follow through on its ambitious plans, or is willing to risk the economic damage and the social shock waves.The Internet has steadily become part of Iran's fabric since the first Farsi-language sites developed a decade ago by Canadian-Iranian blogger Hossein Derakshan, who is considered one of the founders of Iran's social media community. Derakshan, however, was detained in 2008 and sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison two years later as the battles heated up between liberals seeking open access to the Web and authorities trying to erect their own version of China's "Great Firewall," the name given to Beijing's extensive filtering and censorship of the Internet.Sites such as Twitter and Facebook were pillars of the street revolts after the disputed 2009 re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The powerful Revolutionary Guard responded by recruiting and training its own cyber force to patrol the Web and, later, try to defend against virus attacks on nuclear and other sites that Iran has blamed on the West and its allies.Some Web security experts also have raised the possibility of Iranian hackers being behind some recent high-profile computer attacks, such as disruptions at Saudi Arabia's state oil giant Saudi Aramco and Qatari natural gas producer RasGas earlier this month. Fighting spreads in Aleppo's walled city, Syrian cultural jewel

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Fires that gutted a vast mediaeval market have broken out in other areas of the Old City of Aleppo, a world heritage site, as rebels and government forces fight for the ancient heart of Syria's biggest city, opposition activists said on Monday.The rebels last week announced a fresh attempt to seize the city, home of a large merchant class that had mostly remained loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, and appeared to have focused on the warren of alleyways that make up the walled Old City.With government forces holding the large medieval citadel in the heart of the Old City, according to rebels, the fighting that has already claimed more than 30,000 lives across Syria seems certain to destroy more cultural treasures too.
"Rebels control more that 90 percent of the Old City now," said Ameer, an opposition activist working with rebel brigades.But he said they were struggling to hold their positions under heavy artillery fire.He said the rebels still held the Souk al-Madina, a covered market of 13 km (8 miles) of vaulted stone alleyways and carved wooden facades that was once a major tourist attraction.Fires that damaged or gutted more than 1,500 shops had been put out, Ameer said, but new fires had now broken out in the Old City's Zahrawi, Aqaba and Bab Al Nasr markets.Plumes of black smoke were rising from many districts, and gunfire could be heard.The rebels are sensitive to suggestions that they might have brought the conflict to one of Syria's greatest historic and commercial assets. Aleppo was once the last stop before Europe for traders plying the ancient Silk Route from Asia."It's urban warfare. I cannot blame any side specifically for the fires," Ameer said over Skype.UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said that, as a signatory to the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, Syria was obliged to safeguard its heritage from the ravages of war.

"The human suffering caused by this situation is already extreme," she said in a statement. "That the fighting is now destroying cultural heritage that bears witness to the country's millenary history - valued and admired the world over - makes it even more tragic."A visitor to the Old City, who asked not to be named, said the fires, which started on Saturday, were a side effect of the fighting in the covered market, famous for its silks and fabrics."An electrical fire started during clashes and spread quickly," he said, adding that several rebel groups, including those from the most prominent Tawheed Brigade, were involved in the rebel advance, which has had only marginal success in the wider city of 2.5 million people.The pattern of fighting across Syria is one of repeated destruction. When rebel fighters, lightly armed and low on ammunition, make progress, government forces respond with artillery fire until rebels and civilians are flushed out and the army can move in.But rebels are often able to sneak back, and the cycle restarts, suggesting a bleak prospect for Aleppo's Old City, where fires on Sunday reached the perimeter of the Great Mosque, parts of which date back over a thousand years.UNESCO believes that five of Syria's six world heritage sites have already been damaged. The other sites include the ancient desert city of Palmyra, the Crac des Chevaliers crusader fortress and parts of old Damascus.Some 30,000 people have now been killed in an 18-month-old uprising-turned-civil war.Syrian forces shelled rebel strongholds in the eastern suburbs of the capital Damascus on Monday and launched air strikes on the town of Salqeen in the northern province of Idlib, killing at least 17 people, activists said.The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which maintains a network of activists across Syria, said at least five children had been killed in Salqeen, including three from the same family.

Number of children sickened by suspected outbreak of food-borne vomiting virus rises to 8,400

BERLIN - German health authorities say the number of children that have fallen ill with vomiting and diarrhea after eating food from school cafeterias and daycare centres has risen from about 4,500 to 8,400.

Authorities in Berlin and the surrounding eastern German states reported the new gastroenteritis cases Saturday, while laboratory investigations to determine the exact cause of the outbreak were still under way.

Berlin's health department says the sicknesses are moderate and most children recover within two days without requiring to be hospitalized.In Saxony state, at least 16 cases of norovirus, a mostly food- or water-borne illness, were proven, according to German news agency dapd.The government-affiliated Robert Koch Institute said Friday that all facilities where the illness occurred likely received food from a single supplier.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — As the clock winds down to Dec. 21, experts on the Mayan calendar have been racing to convince people that the Mayas didn't predict an apocalypse for the end of this year.Some experts are now saying the Mayas may indeed have made prophecies, just not about the end of the world.

Archaeologists, anthropologists and other experts met Friday in the southern Mexico city of Merida to discuss the implications of the Mayan Long Count calendar, which is made up of 394-year periods called baktuns.Experts estimate the system starts counting at 3114 B.C., and will have run through 13 baktuns, or 5,125 years, around Dec. 21. Experts say 13 was a significant number for the Mayans, and the end of that cycle would be a milestone — but not an end.Fears that the calendar does point to the end have circulated in recent years. People in that camp believe the Maya may have been privy to impending astronomical disasters that would coincide with 2012, ranging from explosive storms on the surface of the sun that could knock out power grids to a galactic alignment that could trigger a reversal in Earth's magnetic field.Mexican government archaeologist Alfredo Barrera said Friday that the Mayas did prophesize, but perhaps about more humdrum events like droughts or disease outbreaks."The Mayas did make prophecies, but not in a fatalistic sense, but rather about events that, in their cyclical conception of history, could be repeated in the future," said Barrera, of the National Institute of Anthropology and History.Experts stressed that the ancient Mayas, whose "classic" culture of writing, astronomy and temple complexes flourished from A.D. 300 to 900, were extremely interested in future events, far beyond Dec. 21."There are many ancient Maya monuments that discuss events far into the future from now," wrote Geoffrey Braswell, an anthropologist at the University of California, San Diego. "The ancient Maya clearly believed things would happen far into the future from now."

"The king of Palenque, K'inich Hanaab Pakal, believed he would return to the Earth a couple of thousand years from now in the future," Braswell wrote in an email to The Associated Press. "Moreover, other monuments discuss events even before the creation in 3114 B.C."Only a couple of references to the 2012 date equivalency have been found carved in stone at Mayan sites, and neither refers to an apocalypse, experts say.Such apocalyptic visions have been common for more than 1,000 years in Western, Christian thinking, and are not native to Mayan thought."This is thinking that, in truth, has nothing to do with Mayan culture," said Alexander Voss, an anthropologist at the University Of Quintana Roo, a state on Mexico's Caribbean coast. "This thing about looking for end-times is not something that comes from Mayan culture."
Braswell compared the Mayan calendar, with its system of cycles within cycles, to the series of synchronized wheels contained in old, analogue car odometers."The Maya long count system is like a car odometer," Braswell wrote. "My first car (odometer) only had six wheels so it went up to 99,999.9 miles. That didn't mean the car would explode after reaching 100,000 miles."

Deadly Kenya grenade attack targets children in church

One child has been killed and six critically hurt, the Red Cross says, in a grenade attack on a church's Sunday school in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.The attacker targeted St Polycarp's church on Juja Road.
A police spokesman said they suspected sympathisers of Somalia's al-Shabab Islamist militants were to blame.Kenyan troops are at present part of an African Union force that has forced al-Shabab from its last Somali urban stronghold of Kismayo.The Daily Nation quoted local police as saying that a number of those hurt at the church were injured in a stampede after the attack.The police spokesman, Charles Owino, told Reuters news agency: "We suspect this blast might have been carried out by sympathisers of al-Shabab.
"These are the kicks of a dying horse since, of late, Kenyan police have arrested several suspects in connection with grenades."
'Another Nigeria' Nairobi and the port city of Mombasa have suffered a series of grenade attacks since Kenya sent troops into Somalia last October.The attacks in Mombasa escalated after radical Islamist preacher Aboud Rogo Mohammed was killed in a drive-by shooting in August.In July, 15 people were killed in raids on churches in Garissa, near Kenya's border with Somalia.There was speculation that al-Shabab or its sympathisers were responsible.Those attacks prompted the country's Inter-Religious Council chairman to urge a united front against sectarian division.Adan Wachu told the BBC Network Africa programme at the time: "There are people out there who are determined to make Kenya another Nigeria."It's not going to be allowed to have a sectarian division in this country - whoever wants to do that will of course fail."Attacks on churches in Nigeria have been frequent this year.Many of them have been blamed on the Boko Haram group, which wants to establish Islamic law in a country where the north is largely Muslim and the south mainly Christian and animist.

Because of Israel,” he asserts. “Once the [Assad] regime disappears, people will start thinking about retaking the land which is rightfully theirs.“We have no problem with negotiations [with Israel], as long as the outcome does not include concessions or capitulation,” he says. “The entire Syrian people agrees on regaining its rights first by peaceful means and, if that doesn’t work, through other means. Israel is terrified by this.”Beneath a lighthearted demeanor, Zoabi is deeply frustrated both with the West and with the Arab world, which, he argues, have done nothing to save the Syrian people from an oppressive regime. Western countries such as France, which claim to be helping the rebels, are lying, he says, and aid from Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia or Qatar is no more than “a drop in the bucket.”According to Zoabi, the weapons currently held by the rebels have either been bought or looted from the Syrian army, not supplied from abroad. Syrian oppositionists do not need fighters from overseas, he says, just more weapons — which they are not receiving. In their desperation, rebels have now begun manufacturing their own weapons: mortars, rockets, and most recently, more advanced weapons.“If we had been given weapons, the regime would have fallen long ago,” he says.An unkempt beard adorning his face and clad in a long, white robe, Zoabi’s appearance is that of a Salafi, or fundamentalist Islamist. But appearances can be misleading, he says.

“If a Westerner would see me, he would brand me a terrorist. But an innocent man does not need to make excuses,” Zoabi argues. “Western media tarnishes the image of Islamists. Come, talk to them, listen to what they have to say. It’s easiest to video al-Qaeda members and say ‘that’s Islam.’”Zoabi is one of half-a-million Syrians who have fled the country since the start of the uprising in March 2011, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He decided to leave his village near the southern city of Deraa in July 2011, after being summoned for questioning by one of Syria’s 17 intelligence agencies, the Political Security Directorate.An active religious preacher before the revolution, Zoabi says Syrian intelligence singled him out from the start, being aware of his religious and political activities in mosques and private gatherings.“My home was one of the first to be raided. They asked me to come to their headquarters and sign a document committing not to participate in demonstrations, but I didn’t go — I knew the regime is treacherous and deceitful.”Zoabi says he could not tell his family of his intention to flee to Jordan, lying just six miles from his village, for fear of government telephone tapping. So he told them he was leaving for Damascus.

He was smuggled across the border by Syrian rebels, who were not yet organizationally affiliated, as the Free Syrian Army was not yet established.A Jordanian army patrol found Zoabi after he had crossed the border by foot. He was convinced the soldiers would arrest him, believing that all Arab regimes cooperated with each other. Instead, the Jordanian soldier hugged him, at which point Zoabi realized he had reached safety.“I will never forget that hug my entire life. It alleviated my security fears.”Many in the West fear an all-out sectarian war following the fall of the Assad regime. In August, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned that Syria was deteriorating into sectarian violence. But Zoabi argues that if it is up to Syria’s Sunni majority, such a war will not take place.“Syria’s population is more than 80 percent Sunni, and we want an Islamic regime, because such a regime will be just to everyone,” he says. “But even if the regime is not Islamic, we will treat everyone justly, even those who wronged us, regardless of their sectarian identity: Alawite, Shiite, Christian. Everyone is committed to this, because God Almighty says in the Koran ‘God commands justice.’”

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Hundreds of shops were burning in the ancient covered market in Aleppo on Saturday as fighting between rebels and state forces in Syria's largest city threatened to destroy a UNESCO world heritage site.The uprising-turned-civil war that is now raging across Syria has killed more than 30,000 people, according to activist groups such as the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.But beyond the dramatic human cost, many of Syria's historic treasures have also fallen victim to an 18-month-old conflict that has reduced parts of some cities to ruins.Rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad announced a new offensive in Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub of 2.5 million people, on Thursday, but neither side has appeared to make significant gains.In Aleppo, activists speaking via Skype said army snipers were making it difficult to approach the Souk al-Madina, the medieval market of vaulted stone alleyways and carved wooden facades in the Old City, once a major tourist attraction.Videos uploaded to YouTube showed dark black clouds hanging over the city skyline.Activists said the fire might have been started by shelling and gunfire on Friday and estimated that between 700 and 1,000 shops had been destroyed so far. The accounts were difficult to verify because of government restricts on foreign media.Aleppo's Old City is one of several locations in Syria declared world heritage sites by UNESCO, the United Nations cultural agency, that are now at risk from the fighting.UNESCO believes five of Syria's six heritage sites - which also include the ancient desert city of Palmyra, the Crac des Chevaliers crusader fortress and parts of old Damascus - have been affected.The British-based Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of activists across Syria, said Assad's forces and rebels blamed each other for the blaze.
NO ONE MAKING GAINS
Heavy clashes erupted outside several military sites in Aleppo on Saturday evening. Activists said rebels were battling government forces outside the Neirab military air base.The Observatory said clashes outside a base used for artillery training had set a nearby building alight and killed three people.Fighting was also reported outside Bab Antakya, a stone gateway to Aleppo's Old City, which sits on ancient trade routes and survived a parade of rulers throughout its construction between the 12th and 17th century.Rebels said they had taken the gate, but some activists said the fighting continued and neither side was truly in control.
"No one is actually making gains here, it is just fighting and more fighting, and terrified people are fleeing," said an activist contacted by telephone who declined to be identified.He said in some districts, bodies were lying in the streets and residents would not collect them, fearing snipers.More than 40 people had been killed in fighting across Syria, according to the Observatory.Syria's military deadlock is also reflected diplomatically, with foreign powers stalemated over how to act. Western states and Gulf Arab countries back the opposition but most seem reluctant to interfere, while Russia, China and Iran back Assad.
The revolt against four decades of Assad family, which began in March 2011 as peaceful protests, has become an armed insurgency, with rebels holding ground in Aleppo and rural towns of northern Syria.
The fighting has crept closer to Syria's border zones, and some bullets and rockets have hit neighboring Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. Ankara warned it would take action if its territory was again hit - a mortar bomb hit a town on its southeastern frontier on Friday.

A video published by showed rows of men, some of them apparently shot, laid in a room whose walls were spattered with blood.Some Damascus residents have accused government forces of summary executions in rebel districts."They can't arrest everyone, so they are using elimination tactics. They enter area that was held by rebels, look for people that are wanted and kill them all," one activist said.Assad has long defended the fierce crackdown, arguing that he has been fighting Islamist militants funded from abroad.Text messages attributed to the army were sent to all Syrian mobiles since Aleppo rebels announced their new offensive."To those who have implicated themselves against the state: Those who have offered you money have left you with two options: You will be killed fighting the state or it will kill you to get rid of you," one message read."The state is more merciful than you. Wrapping up his three-day visit to the US, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday that the two main achievements of the trip were drawing a clear red line on Iran’s nuclear program and strengthening coordination with the US on preventing the Islamic republic from further amassing enriched uranium.

Speaking as his plane was about to take off for the 12 hour flight back to Tel Aviv, Netanyahu pledged that he would ”continue to make every effort to ensure that the world’s most dangerous country doesn’t obtain the world’s most dangerous weapon.”Earlier, Netanyahu defended his use of a cartoon bomb graphic in order to highlight his contention that Iran must be stopped before it has amassed enough 20%-enriched uranium to build a nuclear bomb.In Israeli TV interviews broadcast on Saturday night, following his speech Thursday to the UN General Assembly, Netanyahu said “hundreds of millions of people got my message” around the world. He had made clear that “Iran has to be stopped at the enrichment stage,” he told Channel 10 News. If Iran crosses the line, he went on, the US, Israel and others “would clearly have the right to act.”

Asked whether his speech had essentially postponed any possible resort to force until next spring or summer, Netanyahu said to Channel 10, “I’ve never spoken of dates,” and added that he had not “for a second” ruled out Israel’s possibility “to act at any moment.”“Not for one second did I give up on Israel’s right to defend itself at all times,” Netanyahu reiterated to a Channel 2 interviewer. “I did explain that Iran is at an advanced stage of uranium enrichment and we can’t accept [a scenario] in which Iran completes this stage.”Queried as to whether his use of a rudimentary cartoon image trivialized the subject of Iran’s drive to the bomb – Mitt Romney said Friday he considered joking with Netanyahu over it — the prime minister said, “I don’t think so. It’s a serious subject. Everyone understands that.”He said he “gave a lot of thought” as to how to render a complex issue comprehensible. And the buzz created by his “effective” speech, he said, was positive. “It’s a means to boost discussion of the issue.”Pushed on the subject of dates for a possible resort to force, the prime minister said that it wasn’t a question of dates, but of processes. The nuclear enrichment process, he explained, was gradual and fluid, making it impossible to pinpoint the “red line” in terms of specific times.

The figures, however, would appear to be possible to pinpoint. Pressed specifically in the Channel 2 interview as to whether the line he drew on the cartoon bomb meant an attack would have to come before Iran had enriched 240 kg (529 lb) of uranium to 20% purity — enough for one bomb — Netanyahu did not contest the figures.

“We can’t let them get the fissile material,” he said. “If they continue at this rate, I believe a red line would be the best way to avoid the need for military action.”Referring again to his speech, Netanyahu said, “I wanted to demonstrate to the international community that the process was going ahead. If we want to stop the Iranian nuclear program, we have to stop it before the enrichment process ends … we have to stop it in time…”“The ‘red line’ should be drawn before Iran completes the second phase of enrichment of materials necessary for a first nuclear bomb. That’s what I said, it’s very clear.”Asked about Washington’s reaction to his speech, Netanyahu said he had a good conversation with US President Barack Obama on the matter. “I believe that Israel and the United States can reach agreements that are far more consistent than what this or that analyst would suggest,” he said.“It is important for every Israeli citizen and for the state of Israel to have the whole world focused on the Iranian nuclear program, to have the whole world focused on the question: how do we stop the Iranian nuclear program? For Israel and the United States, which are in agreement in principle on the need to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, to start debating this question … and I think it’s achievable.”He said the US “respects Israel and a prime minister that stands up for our interests.”

“We are a small state threatened by a regime that aims to destroy us,” Netanyahu told his interviewer. “It has been developing, as if nobody were taking notice, weapons of mass destruction that are aimed at us first and foremost – at our cities, at our country. My goal as prime minister – and I do this on behalf of all the citizens of Israel – is to focus international attention and global pressure on this Iranian effort. And I believe that what I did yesterday at the United Nations serves this purpose, despite all the other aspects you describe.”

Netanyahu stressed that his position as leader of Israel – and, by extension, the Jewish people — was doubly important because it was precisely the lack of such leadership which had left the Jewish people defenseless in the past.“When a different despot got up and said ‘I want to destroy the Jews,’ nobody noticed, no one said a word,” Netanyahu told Channel 2, adding that today Israel possessed defense capabilities and diplomacy with which to contend with threats. His job as prime minister of Israel, he said, was to organize Israel’s “considerable” defense mechanisms and “make the world aware of this threat.”

A New York State Senator stormed off the stage of a Muslim Day speech by a jihadist who said, “We have the unborn martyrs in our wombs.”Under this year’s theme that “Islam advocates peace and justice for all, an Imam from Brooklyn told last week’s parade, where State Sen. Tony Avello was a marshal and sat on stage, that the United Nations should pass a law that would criminalize blasphemy.”His speech was only a warm-up for that made by an Arab woman jihadist with a British accent and poetic speech who declared, "We have the unborn martyrs in our wombs and drop bombs in here because all that we blow up is mines in minefields. They [Palestinians] resonate in refugee camps and are hosted by Zionist Nazis.”That was too much for State Senator Avella, who rushed off the stage.The UnitedWest.org organization caught up with the senator and asked him why he stormed off stage. “I was offended,” he said.But when asked why, Avella ducked the question, responding, “I am not going to get into it.”The annual Muslim Day Parade advertises itself as “an annual event that unites Muslim-Americans in New York.”

Lieberman: Abbas 'Spit in Israel's Face' With Speech SEPT 30,12 INN

In an interview with Ha'aretz Sunday, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman sharply criticized Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas over his speech at the UN last week. Lieberman called the speech, in which Abbas blamed all of the PA's woes on Israel, a “spit in the face” at Israel. He said that Israel needed to respond sharply to the speech, especially in light of the fact that Abbas intends to again seek UN recognition of a PA state and full membership of the PA in the General Assembly.Among the accusations Abbas hurled at Israel in the speech was that Israel was running a “terror operation” against the PA, via Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria, whom he called the “settler gang,” and that Israel was “choking” the PA's economy and population, especially in Jerusalem. “In recent years Israel has denuded the Oslo Accord of all meaning,” he said.

Russia told Assad to shoot down Turkish plane, murder captured pilots, ‘leaked Syrian documents’ show

Devastating intelligence papers purport to prove jet was downed on Moscow’s orders, pilots captured alive by intelligence unit and then killed; Damascus had claimed June incident was an accident

Contrary to previous reports, the two pilots of a Turkish F-4 Phantom which was shot down by Syria in June were not killed in the crash, but were murdered by the Assad regime on Russian orders, according to a devastating series of alleged Syrian intelligence documents leaked to and published by Al-Arabiya on Saturday.A file “sent from [President Bashar] Assad’s palace,” said the Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya, conveys and thus apparently approves a Russian suggestion to “eliminate” the pilots in the “natural way.”Syria had claimed that the plane was downed by accident, and at one point asserted that it had believed the plane was Israeli — hence the need to down it.The leaked paperwork purports to show that the pilots were captured by Syrian Air Force Intelligence forces after their plane was shot down “in coordination with the Russian naval base in Tartus” on June 22, according to a document sent directly from Assad’s office to that of Syrian Special Operations Unit head Brig. Hassan Abdel Rahman.Russia maintains a naval facility — the last Russian military facility outside the FSU bloc — in the Syrian port city of Tartus, where it provides technical support and maintenance.According to the files, Assad’s government officially requested that the two men be investigated concerning Ankara’s purported support for the Free Syrian Army (FSA), the main force of anti-Assad rebels. In the documents, Assad warned that Turkey would face grave repercussions if it were to act aggressively against Damascus — not least by utilizing the Kurdistan’s Workers Party (PKK), mobilized with Syrian help.A plan to transfer the two pilots to Lebanon, where they would be placed in the custody of Hezbollah, was reportedly also considered; however, the documents indicate that their fate was quickly sealed — with Russia’s helping hand.According to Al-Arabiya: “A subsequently leaked file, also sent from the presidential palace and addressed to all heads of units of the Syrian foreign intelligence, reads: ‘Based on information and guidance from the Russian leadership comes a need to eliminate the two Turkish pilots detained by the Special Operations Unit in a natural way and their bodies need to be returned to the crash site in international waters.’”The Russians, the leaks indicate, suggested that the Syrian government quickly issue a formal apology to its counterpart in Ankara for shooting down the plane — a recommendation the Assad regime followed.The June 22 incident strained Turkish-Syrian relations amid heightened tension over Damascus’s use of violence against civilians in the now 19-month civil war.Following the incident, the Reuters news agency reported that a statement on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website urged caution and warned that “it is important that what happened is not viewed as a provocation or a premeditated action” by Syria.

But contrary to claims by the Syrian military in the wake of the incident that the plane was shot down by anti-aircraft guns while flying low over Syrian territory, no evidence of anti-aircraft gun damage was found on the aircraft. Turkey claimed the plane was in international airspace, and was shot down without warning. The pilots were hitherto believed to have been killed in the crash.In July, the Sunday Times of London claimed that Russian technicians had played a key part in shooting down the plane, citing sources who said the Russians and Syrians believed the plane was on a NATO mission to test Syria’s airspace and was shot down, in a split-second decision, to send a message to the organization.Analysts had suspected Russian involvement in the incident, which drew harsh condemnations, but no military action, from NATO. Russia has protected Assad in the UN Security Council and sent a number of refurbished helicopters to Damascus.

“We would not be surprised if these Russian experts, if they didn’t push the button, at least were beside the Syrian officers who did it,” the Sunday Times quoted the sources as saying.Later in July, a vessel owned by US ocean explorer Robert Ballard, best known for discovering the wreck of the Titanic, located the bodies of two Turkish pilots on the Mediterranean seabed.The documents — of which there are hundreds, according to the report — were said to have been verified by Al-Arabiya.The Associated Press contributed to this report.

France adopts 'combat budget' for 2013

BRUSSELS - France's Socialist government on Friday (28 September) unveiled €30bn worth tax hikes and spending cuts in a bid to bring the public deficit in line with EU rules next year.Dubbed a "combat budget" by Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, the fiscal plan is based on sharp tax increases for the rich (75% on millionaires) and for companies expected to bring in €20bn.The budget is based on the assumption the economy will grow by 0.8 percent.This may prove difficult, as France's growth was zero this year and the continuing eurozone crisis is worsening the prospects for next year.Ayrault defended the growth forecast as "realistic" and promised that nine out of ten people with not have to pay extra taxes.A further €10bn will be saved by curbing defence spending, prison buildings, transport infrastructure, cultural and ministerial budgets.
The budget is a key test of France's commitment to stick to the three-percent deficit target under EU rules after the election of Socialist President Francois Hollande, who had promised on his campaign trail to hire more teachers and lower the retirement age.Ayrault insisted that bringing down the deficit from 4.5 percent of GDP this year to three percent next year was necessary in order for France to avoid the fate of its southern neighbours."If we abandon this goal, right away the rates will rise and then we will be in the same situation as Italy, in the same situation as Spain, and I do not want that," he said.But economists at CitiGroup are sceptical that the calculations will hold and forecast a deficit of 3.7 percent next year.Meanwhile, seen with EU eyes, the tax hikes and spending cuts are not the best Paris could have come up with."We want to see structural reforms, labour market reforms rather than tax increases and budget cuts. Structural reforms are the ones which unlock growth potential," one EU official told this website.Paris has more breathing space than the likes of Spain, whose government has gone the extra mile on pension and labour market reforms in order to convince markets it does not need a full-blown bailout.The deadline for submitting structural reforms plans for France is end of this year.France is one of the 21 EU countries which are under increased supervision by the EU commission as they have overstepped the deficit threshold.They need to submit their budgets for 2013 by 15 October, with the EU commission having the power to ask for adjustments and sanctions if its recommendations are not followed up. Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, Finland and Sweden are the only countries currently outside this 'excessive deficit procedure'.
