One of the most important projects in Jerusalem, the conservation and rehabilitation of the Old City walls and gates, is complete.In a statement released
Monday, Israel's Antiquities Authority said the work of preserving and
stabilizing the Lions Gate in the Old city's eastern wall has never been
completed.
The impressive gate is the last of the seven open gates of the city wall that were meticulously and professionally treated in recent years by the Conservation Department of the IAA.Funding was provided by the Jerusalem Development Authority and the Prime Minister's Office.The project, which lasted five years, focused on walls that had been built and last renovated in the mid-16th century CE by the Ottoman sultan Suleiman I.

On Sunday night, tourists on the observation deck of the Empire State
Building may get a view of an entirely different type of traveler,
headed south for warmer climes, predicts a new project, called BirdCast, which is working to offer detailed predictions of bird migrations. A large number of the migrating birds are expected to fly over the city
during Tuesday's lighting of the Sept. 11 memorial, the Tribute in
Light, BirdCast predicts.
The flocks of birds that could pass through the city in a few days, assuming the weather forecast holds, make up only a small slice of the fall bird migration through the New York City area. That migration begins as early as July and can last into December. In Manhattan alone, an average of around 250 bird species are spotted each year, and probably close to 175 of these are migrants that make their way over the island once or twice a year, depending on their route, said Andrew Farnsworth, a research associate at Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology.Not surprisingly, weather has a big influence on migrations. Warm temperatures, scattered rain and wind blowing in the wrong direction will likely keep birds on the ground until Sunday when a cold front is expected to pass through the New York City area. The front is expected to bring conditions that fall migrants favor, in particular, clear skies and tail winds out of the north, according to BirdCast's prediction as of Thursday (Sept. 6). Farnsworth is among those developing BirdCast, a collaboration among biologists and computer scientists. If the weather forecast holds, on Sunday night, New Yorkers, particularly those in suburban areas, might hear calls of passing Veery, Wood Thrush, Scarlet Tanager, and many other species, according to a BirdCast forecast made on Thursday (Sept. 6). Monday (Sept. 10), too, should be a good day to see a variety of birds in the city's parks.New birds are expected to continue traveling through, but their numbers will likely decline as conditions change over the course of the week, BirdCast predicts.
The migration will coincide with the Sept. 11 memorial, Tribute in Light, in which two squares of 7,000-watt lights are projected 4 miles into the sky to commemorate the 9-11 attacks. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says gold is not money. Berkshire Hathaway’s Charlie Munger claims it’s only for pre-holocaust Jews and that civilized people don’t buy it. monetary officials and financial pundits in the world completely deny
gold’s value as a unit of monetary exchange and crisis reserve.As worthless as it is, however, tens of billions of dollars have
recently been shifting into this archaic asset of long forgotten
empires.In the last seven months alone the People’s Republic of China has added more gold to their reserves – over 500 tons – than the entire holdings of the European Central Bank. They aren’t alone.Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has been aggresively investing into
the precious metal over the last five years – spending some $500
million monthly as he diversifies his country’s assets out of Dollars
and Euros. Currently, 9% of Russia’s reserves are held in gold.This, of course, begs the question: why?According to the World Gold Council, Russia has more than doubled its gold reserves in the past five years.
Putin has taken advantage of the financial crisis to build the world’s
fifth-biggest gold pile in a handful of years, and is buying about half a
billion dollars’ worth every month.…No one else in the world plays global power politics as ruthlessly as Russia’s chilling strongman……Putin’s moves may matter to your finances, because there are two ways to look at gold.On the one hand, it’s an investment that by most modern standards

BRUSSELS - French Socialist President Francois Hollande has outlined a two-year plan to overhaul the country's stagnating economy and to boost employment.The President conceded the task ahead to stimulate growth and restore public finances would be formidable, but promised in a live TV address on Sunday (9 September) to achieve results by 2014."My mission is a recovery plan and the timeframe is two years," he said.The country's hope of 1.2 percent growth for 2013 was recently dashed as figures indicated the economy will probably expand by just 0.8 percent next year.With unemployment passing 10 percent for the first time since 2002 and increasing, the French leader tried to persuade the public that an increase in taxes would help lower the budget deficit to 3 percent of GDP in 2013."Thirty billion [euros] must be found," said Hollande.He added that all the ministries, with the exception of education, security and justice, would have to reduce their costs by a total of €10 billion. Companies will contribute an additional €10 billion in taxes, with the remaining €10 billion levied on households.
On Saturday, France's richest individual, Bernard Arnault of the luxury goods consortium LVMH, said he would apply for Belgian dual citizenship, according to the Belgian daily, La Libre Belgique.Arnault says his decision has nothing to do with the 75 percent tax and that his fiscal homestead would remain in France.
Hollande on TV noted there would be no exceptions on the wealthy and said: "He [Arnault] must weigh up what it means to seek another nationality because we are proud to be French."France's economy has failed to expand in the past three quarters and just over 3 million people are now unemployed.In August, troubled car-maker Peugeot Citroen announced it would cut some 8,000 jobs in the country, with labour unions threatening widespread strikes if the government does not intervene.Hollande said he would reverse the unemployment curve by 2014 and promised to create an additional 100,000 new jobs before the end of the year.His government will also pressure businesses and unions to quickly reform the labour market. of a Syrian nuclear strike began with intelligence gathered six months

the Osirak nuclear reactor on Iraq in 1981, establishing a policy that
no Arab enemy can be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon, Prime Minister
Ehud Olmert ordered the strike on Syria’s reactor on September 5, 2007.Intelligence and military officials agreed that a “low-signature
attack” on the reactor was the best tactic, and eight warplanes – four
F-15s and four F-16s – took off from Israel shortly before midnight.As previously reported, the IDF neutralized Syria’s radar system with electronic
scrambling devices. Sometime between 12:40 and 12:53 a.m., according to
Makovsky, Air Force pilots reported that they had dropped 17 tons of
explosives on the nuclear site, which Syria still claims did not house a
nuclear reactor.Despite the success of the operation, Makovsky pointed out it is
difficult to use the same strategy to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities
because most of them are buried deep underground.Immediately after the strike on Syria, the Assad regime’s official government news agency SANA
reported that Israeli jets had violated Syrian air space and that “Air
defense units confronted them and forced them to leave after they
dropped some ammunition in deserted areas without causing any human or
material damage.”Israel denied it had bombed the site but since has gradually taken responsibility for the pre-emptive attack.More than two years ago, Der Spiegel reported that American
intelligence agents as early as 2004 picked up unusual conversations
between Syria and North Korea. The information as related to Israel, and
the IDF set up antenna aimed at Al Kibar.In 2006, Israeli agents in London were able to install
a program on a Syrian official's computer and collected information on
construction plans and photographs showing pipes that led to a pumping
station at the Euphrates.One of the photos indentified North Korean nuclear scientists. The following years, Der Spiegel
reported, an Iranian general defected to the CIA and revealed that Iran
was funding a top-secret project in Syrian in coordination with North
Korea.The next revelation of the Syrian nuclear reactor occurred in March
2007, details of which had not been revealed until Makovsky’s report
this week.

Migrating Birds Expected to Pass Over Lighting of Sept. 11 Memorial

That migration begins as early as July and can last into December. In Manhattan alone, an average of around 250 bird species are spotted each year, and probably close to 175 of these are migrants that make their way over the island once or twice a year, depending on their route, said Andrew Farnsworth, a research associate at Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology.Not surprisingly, weather has a big influence on migrations. Warm temperatures, scattered rain and wind blowing in the wrong direction will likely keep birds on the ground until Sunday when a cold front is expected to pass through the New York City area. The front is expected to bring conditions that fall migrants favor, in particular, clear skies and tail winds out of the north, according to BirdCast's prediction as of Thursday (Sept. 6). Farnsworth is among those developing BirdCast, a collaboration among biologists and computer scientists. If the weather forecast holds, on Sunday night, New Yorkers, particularly those in suburban areas, might hear calls of passing Veery, Wood Thrush, Scarlet Tanager, and many other species, according to a BirdCast forecast made on Thursday (Sept. 6). Monday (Sept. 10), too, should be a good day to see a variety of birds in the city's parks.New birds are expected to continue traveling through, but their numbers will likely decline as conditions change over the course of the week, BirdCast predicts.
The migration will coincide with the Sept. 11 memorial, Tribute in Light, in which two squares of 7,000-watt lights are projected 4 miles into the sky to commemorate the 9-11 attacks. Birds can navigate by a variety of means including sensing the Earth's magnetic field,
visual cues including the stars, and even sounds. Bright light,
however, overwhelms these. The problem is made worse if light gets
trapped by fog or overcast skies — "New York City lights up like a candle," Farnsworth said.
As a result, disoriented birds can collide with one another and with structures. So far, however, the worst looks unlikely Tuesday (Sept. 11)."It looks likely there will be some substantial numbers of birds
passing through the New York City area, while the tribute is happening,"
Farnsworth said. "But thankfully, it looks like it will be very clear,
so the effects of the bright lights will not be as extreme."The BirdCast
project is in its first of four years. Right now, the forecasts rely on
the knowledge and intuition of ornithologists such as Farnsworth with
feedback from radar sensors that detect bird movements, but the project
is building toward developing computer models to automate predictions,

BRUSSELS - French Socialist President Francois Hollande has outlined a two-year plan to overhaul the country's stagnating economy and to boost employment.The President conceded the task ahead to stimulate growth and restore public finances would be formidable, but promised in a live TV address on Sunday (9 September) to achieve results by 2014."My mission is a recovery plan and the timeframe is two years," he said.The country's hope of 1.2 percent growth for 2013 was recently dashed as figures indicated the economy will probably expand by just 0.8 percent next year.With unemployment passing 10 percent for the first time since 2002 and increasing, the French leader tried to persuade the public that an increase in taxes would help lower the budget deficit to 3 percent of GDP in 2013."Thirty billion [euros] must be found," said Hollande.He added that all the ministries, with the exception of education, security and justice, would have to reduce their costs by a total of €10 billion. Companies will contribute an additional €10 billion in taxes, with the remaining €10 billion levied on households.

according to diplomats following the revolt.Sunday's air raid destroyed a residential complex in
the Hananu neighborhood, one of several in eastern Aleppo under rebel
control, opposition activists told Reuters by phone.The death toll was at least five, including one woman,
and bodies and wounded people were being dug out from the rubble. Video
footage from the area showed scores of people searching and digging in
the debris of a flattened building.On-scene details could not be independently verified
due to Syria's severe restrictions on international media access.WATER CRISIS IN ALEPPO
Aerial bombardment had also wrecked a main water pipeline, causing serious shortages of water in Aleppo, activists added.A businessman who went from the northwest of the city to Hananu to bury his grandmother - Aleppo's main cemetery is situated in the district - said the ground was shaking with artillery explosions.
"I passed by several (rebel) Free Syrian Army checkpoints. The fighters looked quite relaxed. The army was nowhere to be seen but it was bombing heavily," he said.In the capital Damascus, the army continued to shell Sunni Muslim neighborhoods supportive of the revolt against Assad, whose minority Alawite sect has dominated Syria's power structure for decades.Shelling again struck the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk in south Damascus and the adjacent impoverished neighborhood of Hajar al-Aswad, home to thousands of refugees from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
BUS AMBUSHED
Syrian state media said four people were killed in a "terrorist attack" that targeted a bus in the province of Homs. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said civilians and soldiers were in the bus.
Assad, whose family has rule Syria for 42 years, has
repeatedly said the revolt is the handiwork of Islamist "terrorists" and
not a popular movement for democratic change.U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Sunday
she was pessimistic about closing the gap with Russia on how to defuse
the Syrian conflict before world leaders gather for the U.N. General
Assembly later this month.Clinton said she
made the case for increasing pressure on Assad in talks with Russian
President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a summit of Pacific Rim states in Vladivostok, Russia over the weekend."If we can make progress in New York in the run-up to
the U.N. General Assembly, we can certainly try," Clinton told
reporters. "But we have to be realistic. We haven't seen eye-to-eye on
Syria. That may continue. And if it does continue then we will work with
like-minded states to support the Syrian opposition to hasten the day
when Assad falls."Chinese and Russian
leaders restated their firm opposition to what they see as U.S.
meddling in Syria, a reference to calls for harsh U.N. sanctions to
isolate Assad, for whom Moscow is Syria's most important ally and arms
supplier."Our U.S. partners
prefer measures like threats, increased pressure and new sanctions
against both Syria and Iran. We do not agree with this in principle,"
Lavrov said.Clinton said she
would continue to work with Lavrov to see if the U.N. Security Council
could formally endorse an agreement brokered by former U.N. Syria envoy
Kofi Annan which envisages a transitional governing authority for Syria.But she added that such a step would only be effective
if it carried specific penalties if Assad fails to comply - something

Japan infuriates China by agreeing to buy disputed isles

TOKYO/BEIJING (Reuters) - Japan has agreed to buy a group of islands disputed with China from their private owners, a government official said on Monday, prompting an angry rebuke from China a day after Chinese President Hu Jintao warned against such an "illegal" move.Japan aimed to nationalize the uninhabited islands in the East China Sea as soon as possible to control them in a peaceful and stable manner, Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said.The islands, called
Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, are near rich fishing grounds and
potentially huge maritime gas fields and have been at the heart of
long-running territorial disputes between the world's second and
third-largest economies.Tension flared anew
last month when Japan detained a group of Chinese activists who landed
on the islands. But the row may now be having an economic impact,
intensifying from merely an exchange of rhetoric, with a Chinese
official saying Japanese car sales may have been hit in the world's biggest auto market."This is just the ownership of land, which is part of
Japan's territory, moving from one (private) owner to the state, and
should not cause any problem with other countries," Fujimura said."Having said that, we don't want the Senkaku issue to
affect overall Sino-Japanese relations. Because it is important to avoid
misunderstanding and unforeseen development, we have been closely
communicating with China through diplomatic channels to this day."But China was firm in its opposition to what it saw as a "political trend"."This is a serious infringement of China's sovereignty
and has seriously hurt the feelings of 1.3 billion Chinese..." the
Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "The Chinese government and people
express their resolute opposition and protest strongly."Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi called in Japanese
Ambassador Uichiro Niwa to lodge a strong protest, while state-run
Xinhua news agency cited Premier Wen Jiabao as saying China would "never
yield an inch" of territory.

having difficulty in holding big, outdoor sales promotion campaigns.President Hu warned Japan against buying the islands on Sunday.
"It is illegal and
invalid for Japan to buy the islands via any means. China firmly opposes
it," China's CCTV quoted Hu as telling saying Noda on the sidelines of
an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Vladivostok."China will unswervingly safeguard its sovereignty.
Japan must realize the severity of the situation and not make a wrong

Tropical Storm Leslie slowly moves past Bermuda, bound for Canada

HAMILTON, Bermuda (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Leslie churned east of Bermuda on Sunday, buffeting the island with stiff winds and rain and heading on a path that may carry it to Canada's easternmost province of Newfoundland.A tropical storm warning remained in effect across
Bermuda, where forecasters warned hazardous surf and rip currents were
expected to continue through Monday.Most flights in and out of the island were cancelled on Sunday. Bus and ferry services were suspended.At 5:00 p.m. (2100
GMT) Leslie was 175 miles (280 km) east-northeast of the British
territory, heading north at 14 miles per hour (22 kph) with the centre of the storm beginning to move away from the island, the U.S. National Hurricane Centre said.It had sustained winds of 60 miles per hour (96 kph)
and could strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane over the open Atlantic on
Tuesday with winds reaching 75 miles per hour (120 kph).An affluent island home to some 65,000 people and a
global reinsurance centre, Bermuda has strict building codes and is
well-prepared for storms that sweep across the Atlantic during the
June-through-November hurricane season.As Leslie pushes
north, swells generated by the storm are expected to affect parts of the
U.S. East Coast, the northern Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico and the
Virgin Islands.Forecast models show Leslie may approach Canada's Newfoundland on Tuesday as a full-blown hurricane.Farther out in the
Atlantic, Hurricane Michael was downgraded to a Category 1 storm.
Michael, the first Category 3 storm of the Atlantic season, had
sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph) on Sunday and was forecast to become
a tropical storm by Tuesday, the hurricane centre said. It does not
pose a threat to land.Forecasters were also watching a low pressure trough

In the middle of a nightly news broadcast on state television,
millions of people were plunged into darkness after power went out
across a large part of western Cuba.The outage affected a wide area including the capital Havana, home to
about 2 million people, and the popular beach resort of Varadero.As of late Sunday cuban officials said the incident was under investigation and that workers were trying to restore power.Nobody knows what happened, but people are worried about what they have in their refrigerators.
Electricity was out for about 20 minutes in the central cities of Ciego de Avila and Santa Clara, and the western city of Pinar del Rio had a more extended blackout.Big blackouts were common in the 1990s when Cuba was dealing with an energy crisis, and again in the middle of the last decade. But while isolated, short-term outages still happen frequently in Havana, blackouts of this scope have become rare.

are worried about what they have in their refrigerators."
There was no immediate word on what caused the blackout, which struck a little after 8 p.m.Calls to the electrical system's headquarters met busy signals.
Officials in the national government were not immediately able to offer
an explanation.Electricity began coming back on after about five hours in Havana.State radio said power was gradually being restored and urged people not to use power-hungry appliances.Other cities in central and eastern Cuba also had brief outages.Havana's international airport reported that it had power and was continuing operations.In the capital, the lights went out from western residential
neighborhoods across the city center to suburbs on the other side of the
bay.In the Vedado entertainment and business district, the only buildings
with visible lights were tourist hotels and upscale apartment towers,
which have backup generators.Problems extended well beyond Havana's city limits, including in
Varadero, where power was restored after hotels relied on generators for
about two hours."Our guests are not having any problems," a receptionist at the Arenas Doradas hotel said.Outages that began at the same time as Havana's were reported as far
away as Santiago, the nation's second-largest metropolis about 475 miles
(740 kilometers) away at the other end of the island. The power in
