Ancient seal found in Jerusalem linked to ritual

JERUSALEM (AP) — A rare clay seal found under Jerusalem's Old City appears to be linked to religious rituals practiced at the Jewish Temple 2,000 years ago, Israeli archaeologists said Sunday.The coin-sized seal found near the Jewish holy site at the Western Wall bears two Aramaic words meaning pure for God.Archaeologist Ronny Reich of Haifa University said it dates from between the 1st century B.C. to 70 A.D. — the year Roman forces put down a Jewish revolt and destroyed the second of the two biblical temples in Jerusalem.The find marks the first discovery of a written seal from that period of Jerusalem's history, and appeared to be a unique physical artifact from ritual practice in the Temple, said Reich, co-director of the excavation.Very few artifacts linked to the Temples have been discovered so far. The site of the Temple itself — the enclosure known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary — remains off-limits to archaeologists because of its religious and political sensitivity.

Archaeologists say the seal was likely used by Temple officials approving an object for ritual use — oil, perhaps, or an animal intended for sacrifice. Materials used by Temple priests had to meet stringent purity guidelines stipulated in detail in the Jewish legal text known as the Mishna, which also mention the use of seals as tokens by pilgrims.The find, Reich said, is the first time an indication was brought by archaeology about activities in the Temple Mount — the religious activities of buying and offering and giving to the Temple itself.The site where the seal was found is on the route of a main street that ran through ancient Jerusalem just outside the Temple compound.Aren Maeir of Bar-Ilan University, a biblical archaeologist not connected to the dig, said the seal was special because it was found right next to the Temple and is similar to what we see described in the Mishna.
It's nice when we can connect an activity recorded in ancient sources with archaeological finds,he said.The seal was found in an excavation run by archaeologists from the government's Israel Antiquities Authority. Arab Spring villains bombard EU with lawsuits

BRUSSELS - The year of the Arab Spring has seen an extraordinary number of anti-EU lawsuits, including by the late Colonel Gaddafi, who lost.Eighty two people, entities or groups of entities hit by EU visa bans and asset freezes took the EU to court in 2011.The number is a staggering increase compared to previous years: there were just seven cases in the whole period from 1999 (the first-ever case) to 2009 and 15 cases in 2010.The bulk (37) of the 2011 lawsuits come from the circle of ex-Cote-d'Ivoire leader Laurent Gbago. One of them is by his wife, Simone, who said she should get off because the war was a force majeure.Iranian banks and shipping firms lodged 14 cases.Most of the rest came from Arab Spring countries Syria (10), Libya (6), Tunisia (6) and Egypt (3).Gaddafi had the chutzpah to try to stop France from giving €259 million of his loot to the Transitional National Council in Benghazi. The EU court rubbished his appeal as being manifestly inadmissable.Businessmen and companies are more litigious than politicians.

The first ever case was filed by Serbian supermarket baron Miroslav Miskovic, an associate of the late dictator Slobodan Milosevic, in 1999.Syrian billionaire Rami Makhlouf has filed five cases. In one of them he wants €50,000 damages and €7,500 in legal costs. He said the EU ban does not promote peace and security and that it endangers his means of support and right to life.One interesting case concerns Syrian tycoon Tarif Akhras.Akhras said that after the EU put him on its blacklist Syrian rebels made death threats against him and his son, an armed man tried to murder him and someone else tried to kill his son-in-law. He fled Homs for Damascus in October and then left Syria for a place which he is keeping secret for security reasons.He lost the case. The tribunal said he is a natural target because he is related to Assad's wife. It added that the EU is not responsible for things that happen in a situation approaching civil war and anarchy.Meanwhile, Belarusian arms trader Vladimir Peftiev has brought four cases.He said the EU failed to prove that he is funding President Alexander Lukashenko and wants protection under the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Just three plaintiffs won in 2011 - Cote D'Ivoire oil baron Kadio Morokro, its former foreign minister Youssoufou Bamba and an Iranian firm, Hanseatic Trade Trust & Shipping.The EU has not paid anyone a cent in damages in the past 12 years, however.The above list of cases does not include people on a separate EU register of terrorist entities.But a case brought by Philippino intellectual Jose Maria Sison in 2007 set an important precedent. Sison got off the terrorist register. But the court ruled the EU is liable for damages only if there is a sufficiently serious breach of law and an inexcusable or intentional error, taking into account the complexity of the situations to be regulated.Judges in Luxembourg have ever since said the EU can be forgiven if it makes a slip when dealing with complex regimes.

US has found 5,000 missiles in Libya

Russia build 100 ton ballistic missile named Satan

In connection with the plans of the United States to develop the air defense system in Europe, in close vicinity to Russia's borders, and because of the unwillingness of the US side to provide any guarantees, the Russian Federation continues to take measures to preserve parity in the field. In particular, Russia's Strategic Missile Forces (SMF) will be renovated with the help of state-of-the-art Topol-M and Yars complexes during the upcoming ten years. In addition, Russia will pass into service a new intercontinental missile of enormous power.The decision about the creation of the new silo-based missile system with a liquid-fuel heavy missile has been made. The complex will have increased possibilities in overcoming the prospective missile defense system of the United States, Sergei Karakaev, the commander of the missile troops said.

The new missile, the mass of which is going to make up 100 tons, is said to replace the world-known Voevoda ICBM. In the West, this missile is known as Satan. In the meantime, Russia has already started working to create the middle-class newly equipped missile. The new missile is to be passed into service in 2015, RIA Novosti reports.Russia does not stand against the US missile defense system. Russia stands against the creation of the missile defense system, which would be directly aimed against Russia to potentially reduce the possibilities of the Russian nuclear containment forces,the official stated.

And it also doesn't hurt to throw in some shock-and-awe--say, a ballistic missile nicknamed Satan.This appears to at least partly explain why on Monday Russia announced that it had successfully tested a short-range interceptor missile; part of its ongoing effort to develop a domestic missile defense system, according to Russia's RIA News Agency. (The Russian Defense Ministry has provided a video of the missile's launch on its website.) Russia also announced it is working on the development of a 100-ton ballistic missile slated for release in 2015, Pravda reports. Russia recently held contested parliamentary polls and is due to hold presidential elections in March. Russia's military establishment is concerned about losing parity with the United States on the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads that it maintains, the Ploughshare Fund's Joel Rubin told Yahoo News Tuesday. By developing a new heavy missile, a perverse outcome is taking place, where Russia is attempting to not fall further beneath New START levels in order to satisfy the concerns of its military establishment.Of course, tough-guy posturing on the well-worn grooves of the Cold War axis is not unique to Moscow. On Saturday, President Obama's nominated envoy to Moscow, Michael McFaul, was finally confirmed after Republican Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois lifted a weeks-long hold on the nominee.Kirk lifted his objections after the White House wrote him a letter assuring him that it will not provide Russia with sensitive information about our missile defense systems that would in any way compromise our national security,Agence-France Press reported.Specifically the White House told Kirk that under no circumstances' would the United States provide hit-to-kill technology and interceptor telemetry to Russia.

MOSCOW (AP) — Tens of thousands of Russians jammed a Moscow avenue to demand free elections and an end to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's 12-year rule, in the largest show of public outrage since the protests 20 years ago that brought down the Soviet Union. Gone was the political apathy of recent years as many shouted We are the Power! Saturday's demonstration, bigger and better organized than a similar one two weeks ago, and smaller rallies across the country encouraged opposition leaders hoping to sustain a protest movement ignited by a fraud-tainted parliamentary election on Dec. 4.The enthusiasm also cheered Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader who closed down the Soviet Union on Dec. 25, 1991.I'm happy that I have lived to see the people waking up. This raises big hopes,the 80-year-old Gorbachev said on Ekho Moskvy radio.He urged Putin to follow his example and give up power peacefully, saying Putin would be remembered for the positive things he did if he stepped down now. The former Soviet leader, who has grown increasingly critical of Putin, has little influence in Russia today.But the protesters have no central leader and no candidate capable of posing a serious challenge to Putin, who intends to return to the presidency in a March vote.Even at Saturday's rally, some of the speakers were jeered by the crowd. The various liberal, nationalist and leftist groups that took part appear united only by their desire to see Russia without Putin, a popular chant.

Putin, who gave no public response to the protest Saturday, initially derided the demonstrators as paid agents of the West. He also said sarcastically that he thought the white ribbons they wore as an emblem were condoms. Putin has since come to take their protests more seriously, and in an effort to stem the anger he has offered a set of reforms to allow more political competition in future elections.Kremlin-controlled television covered Saturday's rally, but gave no air time to Putin's harshest critics.Estimates of the number of demonstrators ranged from the police figure of 30,000 to 120,000 offered by the organizers. Kim Jong-Il's son hailed as supreme commander

North Korea's ruling party Saturday hailed the son of late leader Kim Jong-Il as supreme commander of the military, in the latest sign that the untested successor is tightening his grip on power.Experts said the move indicated that Pyongyang would maintain its Songun (military-first) policy, blamed for the deaths of thousands of people to starvation as the isolated regime diverts resources to its armed forces.
We will uphold Comrade Kim Jong-Un as our supreme commander and general and we will bring the Songun revolution to a completion, the Rodong Sinmun, the mouthpiece of the ruling communist party, said in an editorial.The newspaper urged Jong-Un, Kim's youngest son, to lead North Korea to eternal victory.It is the first time that the North's official media has used the title supreme commander -- a post previously held by his father -- for the new leader, already a four-star general despite only being in his late 20s.This shows that Jong-Un now has a firm grip on the military and the North is heralding this to the outside world, professor Kim Yong-Hyun of Dongguk University in Seoul told AFP.

China announces currency swap with Pakistan

BEIJING (AP) — China announced a currency swap with Pakistan on Saturday in a new step to gradually expand use of its tightly controlled yuan abroad.Beijing has begun allowing limited use of yuan in trade with Hong Kong and Southeast Asia in a move that could help to boost exports. It has signed swap currency deals with central banks in Thailand, Argentina and some other countries.The Chinese central bank said it agreed Friday with its Pakistani counterpart to swap 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) for 140 billion Pakistani rupees. It said the money would promote investment and trade but gave no details of how it would be used.Such agreements give central banks access to each other's currency but commercial banks still need to create systems to issue letters of credit and handle other transactions in those currencies before companies can use them.The United States and other trading partners complain Beijing's controls on the yuan keep it undervalued, giving its exporters an unfair price advantage and hurting foreign competitors at a time when the global economy is struggling.Some American lawmakers are demanding punitive tariffs on Chinese goods if Beijing fails to move more quickly in easing its controls.

Expanded use of the yuan abroad would reduce costs for Chinese traders who do most of their business in dollars and euros. BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — Tens of thousands of tourists and Christian pilgrims packed the West Bank town of Bethlehem for Christmas Eve celebrations Saturday, bringing warm holiday cheer to the traditional birthplace of Jesus on a raw, breezy and rainy night.With turnout at its highest in more than a decade, proud Palestinian officials said they were praying the celebrations would bring them closer to their dream of independence.Meanwhile, Christmas celebrations began to take place around the globe, with Pope Benedict XVI celebrating Christmas Eve Mass two hours before midnight at Vatican City and urging the faithful to look beyond the commercialization of the holiday and discover its true meaning.Let us ask the Lord to help us see through the superficial glitter of this season, and to discover behind it the child in the stable in Bethlehem, so as to find true joy and true light,Benedict told congregants in a packed St. Peter's Basilica.Bethlehem, like the rest of the West Bank, fell onto hard times after the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation broke out in late 2000. As the fighting has subsided in recent years, the tourists have returned in large numbers.By late night, the Israeli military, which controls movement in and out of town, said some 100,000 visitors, including foreigners and Arab Christians from Israel, had reached Bethlehem, up from 70,000 the previous year.Thousands of Palestinians from inside West Bank also converged on the town.It's wonderful to be where Jesus was born, said Irma Goldsmith, 68, of Suffolk, Virginia. I watch Christmas in Bethlehem each year on TV, but to be here in person is different. To be in the spot where our savior was born is amazing.

After nightfall, a packed Manger Square, along with a 50-foot-tall (15-meter-tall) Christmas tree, was awash in Christmas lights, and the town took on a festival-like atmosphere.

Vendors hawked balloons and corn on the cob, and bands played Christmas songs and tourists packed cafes that are sleepy the rest of the year. As rain began falling in the early evening, many people cleared out of the square and raced to nearby restaurants.Festivities were to culminate with Midnight Mass at the Church of the Nativity, built over the grotto where tradition says Jesus was born.Among the visitors were a surprisingly large number of veiled Muslim women with their families, out to enjoy an evening out in what is normally a quiet town.We love to share this holiday with our Christian brothers, said Amal Ayash, 46, who came to Manger Square with her three daughters, all of them covered in veils. It is a Palestinian holiday and we love to come here and watch.Israel turned Bethlehem over to Palestinian civil control a few days before Christmas in 1995, and since then, residents have been celebrating the holiday regardless of their religion.Pilgrims from around the world also wandered the streets, singing Christmas carols and visiting churches.It's a real treat to come here, said John Houston, 58, a restaurant owner from Long Beach, California.It makes me feel really good to see what I have been learning from the time I was a kid in Sunday school until today.

Houston said he was surprised by Bethlehem's appearance, which is a far cry from the pastoral village of biblical times. Today, it is a sprawling town of cement apartment blocs and narrow streets that combined with several surrounding communities has a population of some 50,000 people.Located on the southeastern outskirts of Jerusalem, Bethlehem is surrounded on three sides by a barrier Israel built to stop Palestinian militants from attacking last decade.Palestinians say the barrier has damaged their economy by constricting movement in and out of town. Twenty-two percent of Bethlehem residents are unemployed, the Palestinian Authority says. Israeli settlements surrounding Bethlehem have added to the sense of confinement.The Christmas season is essential for Bethlehem's economy, which depends heavily on tourism.Most visitors entering Bethlehem, including the top Roman Catholic official in the Holy Land, Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, had to cross through an Israeli-controlled checkpoint to reach town.Twal, a Palestinian citizen of Jordan, arrived in a traditional midday procession from Jerusalem, and later, celebrated Midnight Mass at the Church of the Nativity.In his homily, he referred to the Arab Spring, imploring Arab leaders to have wisdom, insight and a spirit of selflessness toward their countrymen and praying for reconciliation in Syria, Egypt, Iraq and North Africa.He also noted the Palestinian campaign to join the United Nations, and complained that the U.N. was less than united in its support for the now-stalled initiative. The B.C. government says it will begin working with national and municipal officials this January to prepare for the massive wave of debris heading to Pacific Northwest shores because of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.Meanwhile, residents in the B.C. coastal community of Tofino are bracing themselves for the sad arrival of detritus from the devastating disaster, even while they debate amongst themselves whether the ruins have already started reaching the shore.Julianne McCaffrey, a spokeswoman for the Emergency Management B.C., part of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, has confirmed the government is creating a Provincial Tsunami Debris Working Group.She said the arrival of the debris, which some experts have argued covers an area the size of California, has raised some complex jurisdictional issues, which the working group will clarify, so officials hope to identify key members by Jan. 6 In most cases, the federal government has authority in the water and immediate shorelines, and in most cases the local authority becomes the lead if the debris washes ashore in areas above the high tide line, McCaffrey said in an email to The Canadian Press.Occasionally, in the case of hazardous or human remains, it becomes provincial jurisdiction — which has not happened, so we cannot speak to hazards or issues that do not exist.The provincial government's announcement comes as one U.S. expert confirms some flotsam, like 250-litre Japanese fishing buoys, has already landed on Pacific Northwest shores between Oregon and Alaska.

Community divided

Debris not always from earthquake

Yet others in town are not entirely convinced flotsam from the tsunami has arrived.
Jeff Mikus, a commercial fisherman for more than 20 years, said he's definitely not convinced the flotsam is from the tsunami, saying he hasn't seen any more debris on the shores or in the water than normal.I think people are just looking more now because, you know, it's coming, he said. People are more aware of it so they start seeing stuff on the beach and they think, oh, God, and they see a little bit of, you know, some kind of Asian writing of some sort, he said.Mikus said he regularly finds plastic floats, corks, water bottles and shampoo bottles, and added that most of the fishing gear he buys in B.C. is made in Japan and has Japanese markings on it.Mikus also said people forget how many ships pass Vancouver Island and some of the debris could be coming from them.You'd think you'd see a lot of stuff that would have a lot more growth on it, algae and barnacles and whatnot after floating around in the ocean that long,he added. The few pictures I've seen of stuff doesn't look like it's been in the water that long.Mikus said he believes the bulk of the flotsam is still a long way away.There might be a massive cleanup going on here in a year or two.

Congress is set to give the green light on funding for a massive expansion of TSA checkpoints, with the federal agency already responsible for over 9,000 such checkpoints in the last year amidst increased fears America is turning into a police state following the passage of the indefinite detention bill.The increase in funding has nothing to do with the TSA’s role in airports – this is about creating 12 more VIPR teams to add the federal agency’s 25 units that are already scattered across the country and responsible for manning checkpoints on highways, in bus and train terminals, at sports events and even high school prom nights.The TSA’s 25 viper teams — for Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response — have run more than 9,300 unannounced checkpoints and other search operations in the last year. Department of Homeland Security officials have asked Congress for funding to add 12 more teams next year,reports the L.A. Times.The demand for $24 million in extra funding is in addition to the $110 million spent in fiscal year 2011. The figures are completely independent from the federal agency’s role inside the nation’s airports, which costs taxpayers $5 billion a year.The extra money is being demanded despite the fact that there is no proof that the roving viper teams have foiled any terrorist plots or thwarted any major threat to public safety,according to the L.A. Times report, which also highlights how the TSA’s sniffer dogs are used to single out people for questioning if the dog smells the scent of the owner’s pets on their clothing.The appearance of thousands more checkpoints on America’s highways and at key transport hubs will only heighten concerns that the country is headed towards a Soviet-style police state.Such fears were again expressed last week following the passage of the National Authorization Defense Act, a provision of which empowers the government to arrest Americans and hold them in a detention camp with no legal recourse.

With the federal government now seeking contractors to provide staff and supplies for emergency camps located around the country, the possibility of innocent Americans being swept up in a dragnet following a declaration of a national emergency has never been more of a threat.The TSA is being used as a literal occupying army to ensure Americans who travel anywhere are constantly under the scrutiny of Big Brother.Back in October we reported on how Tennessee’s Homeland Security Commissioner announced that a raft of new security checkpoints would be in place over the Halloween period to keep roadways safe for trick-or-treaters.Earlier that same month it was announced that Transportation Security Administration officials would be manning highway checkpoints in Tennessee targeting truck drivers.
After public outrage, the TSA attempted to neutralize the controversy by claiming that the inspections were carried out by State Troopers (the TSA agents were there to try to recruit truck drivers into becoming snitches for the ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign), and that the checkpoints were merely temporary.In reality, the program was the latest phase of the TSA’s rapidly expanding VIPR program, under which TSA agents have been deployed to shake down Americans at everywhere from bus depots, to ferry terminals, to train stations, in one instance conducting pat downs of passengers, including children, who had already completed their journey when arriving in Savannah.

But don’t let the bureaucratic language fool you. This is really a Martial Law document. FEMA is not interested in emergency preparedness, but in establishing a military dictatorship in the United States.

Franco-Turkish relations hit new low on genocide bill

BRUSSELS - Turkey has imposed sanctions against France in reaction to a draft law on the Armenian genocide that could see the Turkish Prime Minister put in prison unless he claimed diplomatic immunity.The measures comprise a freeze on bilateral meetings on foreign and defence policy; cancelling a ministerial-level meeting on the economy in January 2012; forcing French military jets to seek permission each time they enter Turkish airspace; and a ban on French naval vessels in Turkish ports. Ankara also recalled its ambassador to Paris.Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan at a press conference on Thursday (22 December) said the measures are just the first phase of his response.He called the bill an irreparable wound on bilateral relations and accused French leader Nicolas Sarkozy of racism, discrimination, xenophobia.He added: There is no such genocide in history. EU slams Hungary for power-grab on central bank

BRUSSELS - The European Central Bank (ECB) on Thursday (22 December) lashed out at the Hungarian government over plans to seize control of its central bank, the latest in a series of power-grabs by the ruling party amid worsening economic conditions and downgrades to 'junk' territory by two major ratings agencies.Enforcing the current draft law on the central bank (Magyar Nemzeti Bank) could undermine [its] independence, the ECB said in a statement, focusing on a provision which would increase the number of deputy governors, effectively giving the government a say in the setting of interest rates.Merging the central bank with the country's financial supervisory authority and creating a new institution, as envisaged in a second draft bill would also affect the personal independence of the central bank's governor, the ECB warned.The draft laws have already drawn criticism from the EU commission and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), whose negotiating team last week broke off talks on a precautionary loan in protest over the envisaged legislative changes.The centre-right Fidesz party of Prime Minister Viktor Orban enjoys a super-majority in the parliament able to pass constitutional changes or any other legislative moves it wants.Orban is at odds with the governor of the central bank, as the financial institution has boosted interest rates to record highs, reaching seven percent on Tuesday - the highest in the EU. Both have projected a negative outlook for the country's economy, forecast to have the highest debt level and slowest economic growth among the EU's eastern members next year.Informal discussions on an IMF loan will resume in January, an EU commission spokesman said Thursday.In a separate row, EU justice and fundamental rights commissioner Viviane Reding has also sent a letter to Orban's cabinet regarding data protection issues and age discrimination, after the government changed the retirement age for judges.Earlier this year, just as Hungary was taking over the rotating EU presidency, the Orban government made headlines with a so-called media-gagging law, fiercely criticised by the EU Parliament and commission.Under Brussels pressure, the Hungarian government revised some of the most controversial provisions, but human rights watchdogs such as the Council of Europe say the changes were cosmetic.

Banks queue up for cheap ECB loans

BRUSSELS - Over 500 European banks rushed to borrow almost half a trillion euro in cheap loans from the ECB on Wednesday (21 December), highlighting the credit squeeze on the market and only marginally increasing investor confidence that the central bank is mastering the euro-crisis.The price in gold dropped slightly on Thursday morning and markets went up by an average of one percent in response to the cash injection, as 523 banks took a record of €489.2 billion at an interest rate of just one percent over three years - an emergency programme initiated by the European Central Bank.So far, only short-term loans for up to a year benefited from these low rates. But the ECB decided to extend the period with many European banks heavily exposed to government bonds from troubled eurozone countries. This has led to decreasing inter-bank lending due to lack of trust in each other's capacity to pay back.The ECB has been fiercely resisting pressure from southern countries and market analysts to step in and buy government debt on a massive scale, insisting that it can do so only to a limited degree and that it is there to salvage the financial system, not governments.In a speech on Monday in the European Parliament, ECB chief Mario Draghi warned of a credit crunch if his institution did not intervene to help banks out.Preventing that from happening was his main task rather than expanding the bond purchasing programme, which was neither eternal nor infinite.A June 2012 deadline for banks to boost their capital to nine percent risks forcing banks to fire sell assets at very low prices and to reduce overall lending even further, Draghi noted.

Despite the high demand for the Wednesday loans, analysts at the Royal Bank of Scotland estimated that about 61 percent of the total sum actually represented a roll-over of banks' shorter-term loans, meaning that net liquidity injected into EU banks only amounted to €191 billion.The key question now is whether this net new liquidity will be used to purchase sovereign bonds, lend to the economy or pay maturing bonds, RBS said in a note to investors.On Monday, Draghi had said that the aim of the new funding was for banks to lend to households and businesses and avoid a credit crunch.Almost a quarter of the loans - €116 billion - went to Italian banks such as UniCredit and Intesa, insiders told Reuters. In line with the Draghi recommendation, they are not expected to reinvest the money by buying further bonds from their own government bonds, which in turn could create a problem for Rome when it tries to borrow money from the financial markets.Italian banks have 192 billion domestic bonds on their books, mostly spread among the five biggest banks. The ECB in recent months has almost quadrupled its help to Italian banks, from €41 billion in June to €153 billion in November.Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti faces a confidence vote on Thursday as he is pushing through a €33 billion austerity package comprising tax increases and a pension overhaul aimed at boosting investor confidence and lowering the government's borrowing costs, which are still well above the 5-percent threshold of sustainable debt.The measures are expected to be passed, even though public support for Monti has dropped by 15 percent in just one week, according to a poll published in Corriere della Sera.Ratings agencies have warned Italy and other eurozone countries they may be downgraded if they fail to adopt a comprehensive solution to the debt crisis.

The traditional American Normal Rockwell Christmas, the embodiment of small-town values and the orthodox American family is in jeopardy. Left up to the Progressives in power, the ghosts of Christmas future will treat their pajama-clad companions with a vision of the future that will be hardly visible under the ashes of forced secularism and certain economic disaster. If the entrenched GOP powerbrokers have their way, it will be replaced with a slightly less deficient, morally impaired and economically bankrupt system of globalism. The GOP establishment embedded in DC politics is determined to force Americans into a Hobson’s choice.With the Iowa caucus just two weeks away, there is still considerable acrimony within the GOP leadership pushing the old guard candidates. The discontent by conservative republicans is evident but ignored by career politicians, campaign strategists and their mouthpieces whose hubris is secondary only to their need for power and wealth that comes with it.

Tone deaf Tea Party benefactors

The last mid-term elections were supposed to install leaders who would recapture true American conservatism. They promised to embrace the core values of the conservative republican voters of heartland America, advance their agenda and begin the process of ridding the country of one of the worst big government presidents in U.S. history. Despite such promises, the former Tea Party candidates turned DC lawmakers have apparently abandoned their values and constituents. A prime example of such abandonment is the recent passage of the National Defense Authorization Act, which is a direct assault on the U.S. Constitution. Another example includes their silent acquiescence to the creation of a super congress, in which they have ceded their power to a gang of 12 plus one – Barack Hussein Obama, without so much as a whimper. We could continue, but is it really necessary? We think not, for those who followed thus far understand the corruption of politics, as well as the politics of corruption.Currently dominating the headlines is, of course, the GOP Presidential candidate and the Iowa caucus. The entrenched republican leadership is out in full force, pushing for a nominee who, in their opinion, will beat Obama. Obviously, for any thinking person who cares about the future of America, change in our executive leadership is necessary for the sovereignty and survival of our country. But is that the only standard by which GOP candidates are measured?

Remember 2008: Anybody but Bush!

Americans are notorious for our short attention span. Remember 2008 when the slogan was anybody but Bush? How is that working out for America? From that rallying cry, McCain emerged as the GOP candidate and the rest is history. The same infrastructure of GOP leaders that brought us candidate McCain is working to bring us a new GOP candidate for 2012. Today, it’s anybody but Obama.Same mindset, different election year.While it is essential for our future that we return to the values that are America, must we submit to the strategy of the very people who sold or otherwise abandoned the heart and soul of our country? It’s time for intellectual honesty here, as anything less could result in the United States Marine band playing a funeral dirge at the next inauguration should we settle for anyone who continues our present course.Gingrich, Romney, Perry, oh my! The established republican guard appears willing to present their party, as well as the American people, their choice for candidates irrespective of the conservative ideology that served as the party’s moral compass in decades past. It is they who decide who the frontrunner is, and it is they who banish non-conformists to the back of the party bus. The provide the talking points for the talking heads, instructing them of the approved topics and other topics that must not be addressed. It is this political machine behind the curtain that orchestrates the attacks on some while mitigating attacks on others.
When we peek behind the curtain, we see the individuals who are promoting the candidates who will continue big government, although repackage it so it appears more palatable. An honest assessment of Gingrich, Romney and Perry leads us to conclude that each frontrunner is heavily integrated into the global agenda, an apparent condition for promotion by the beltway aristocracy.As it appears that Newt Gingrich is taking the lead, it is important to ask what a Gingrich administration might bring us.

Gingrich on Globalism

A member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) since 1990, Gingrich has aligned himself with heads of states, banking, industry and international elites advancing a global agenda. This includes the creation and implementation of the North American Union, once thought to be an artifact of hypersensitive conspiracy kooks. With the onset of coordinated financial chaos, however, the likelihood of such a union is not far from becoming an economic necessity.If mere CFR membership and association with the global elite are not convincing enough, it should be noted that part of the implementation of the NAU includes the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). On November 17, 1993 Gingrich voted in favor of the implementation of NAFTA. He also supported the World Trade Organization (WTO), which puts American trade policies in the hands of international rivals.

Gingrich on Progressivism

Glenn Beck was attacked by conservatives for contending that Newt Gingrich is a Progressive. On his show, Beck broke down Newt Gingrich and his policies of big government establishment positions and noting that Gingrich most admires former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt, of course, is the father of the Bull Moose Party, which became the early onset of the progressive movement in the U.S.
Other examples include his progressive views involving climate change, mandates for health care and cap and trade, which he has since renounced or tempered. Still, one can find the now infamous television commercial he did with former Progressive House Speaker Nancy Pelosi about the dangers of global warming. During his years in Congress, Gingrich co-sponsored 418 articles of legislation with Nancy Pelosi.We can point to numerous other Progressive positions adopted by Mr. Gingrich, including his one-time advocacy of cap-and-trade and federally mandated health insurance. For his role in the individual health care mandate, Gingrich founded a company that rolled his lobbying activities into government access, and enterprise where he capitalized on his years of government service.And of course with the state of economy today, who can morally justify his relationship with FreddieMac and FannieMae? Since he is the reported frontrunner and instead of parroting the official party line, we must act like conservatives and ask ourselves if Gingrich is the best we can do.

What now?

It is without question that another four years of the Obama agenda will move America off of life support and into the morgue, at least as far as our Constitutional principles and national sovereignty are concerned. But we cannot afford to accept a replacement that will merely slow the process, nor should we be forced to by the power elite posing as saviors of our nation.If this next presidential election is the most important election in all of our modern history as every conservative pundit, commentator, talk show host, writer, blogger, and politician claims, then we must not merely settle for anyone but Obama. We must not lie to ourselves or temper the truth. We must lay it all out, expose duplicity, and support someone who best supports our founding principles.After all, the Constitution is not just a g-damned piece of paper.It is the law of the land. OUR LAND, at least for now.

Health care coal in your stocking

Forced Health care, now being reviewed in the Supreme Court is but a full on assault to our freedoms, state sovereignty, while transforming safe and effective care to cost effective care rivaling what Hitler did. Energy coal in your stocking

Where is the screaming about Obama and his EPA shutting down at least 68 Coal plants? He has also put forth idiot and endless regulations aimed at various power plants. These power and coal plants represent enough needed power in the US that there will be rolling black outs across America without them. They will gut power provided to at least 22 million people in 12 states, and that is just for starters. States will be forced to buy more expensive power from other states, then deal with even endless unemployment and huge increases in utility rates.

All who had anything to do with this bill should be chased out of the Senate! Shame on John McCain and Carl Levin who authored such a traitorous bill. This bill completely makes a mockery of our protection under Posse Comitatus of 1878 and shreds our Miranda rights afforded to all US citizens. Now, our military can turn on their own people, without charges and hold them indefinitely on vague terrorist suspicions without trial. Our so called representatives and leaders should be screaming about the bold violation of our constitution, posse comitatus and shredding of our Mirada rights!

Bilirakis and Plakon are both patriots.Congressman Bilirakis specifically requested a seat on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs because he wants to be an advocate for veterans and their families in the United States Congress. He is working to ensure that veterans receive the benefits they have earned through their service to our nation. He also chairs the Republican Policy Committee’s Task Force on Veterans’ Affairs.Leading the fight to provide our veterans and service members with the pay and benefits they deserve, Bilirakis has introduced legislation to address the concurrent receipt of military retired pay and VA disability, expand the Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) program and increase military pay. Provisions based on his legislation have been incorporated into the Fiscal Year 2008 National Defense Authorization Act, which is working its way through the legislative process. In addition, the House passed his wounded warrior legislation to ensure that our wounded service members receive the care and services they need.

As a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, he has raised important health care and benefits issues with the VA Secretary and other top VA officials. He supported legislation to increase funding for veterans’ health care funding. Specifically, the bill provides $37.2 billion for veterans’ health care programs and creates new programs to help those with traumatic brain injuries and other mental health needs which are among the most common problems facing Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. He has also introduced legislation to create a test mail-order pharmacy program to save military retirees both time and money.In addition, he is fighting to bring additional health care resources to Florida and the Ninth Congressional District. Since coming to Congress, he has worked with local and national VA officials to expand the Pasco County VA Outpatient Clinic and bring additional health care services, such as dental care, to area veterans. He also has visited the James Haley VA Medical Center (VAMC), meeting with the medical center staff and veterans to discuss the care and services provided at the VAMC.As a member of the Veterans’ Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, Bilirakis has also toured the VA Regional Office and met with VA officials to discuss veterans’ claims processing issues. He is working with his Subcommittee colleagues improve the claims processing system to reduce the claims backlog and shorten response times.

Congressman Bilirakis also knows that military service does not take place in a vacuum. He has introduced legislation to improve the benefits for veterans’ survivors. His Disability Subcommittee conducted a hearing on his legislation to allow the widows of veterans to remarry at age 55 and retain their Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC).This is Rep. As a young boy growing up in Rochester, New York, Scott Plakon’s parents would take him and his two brothers on vacation every year to visit beautiful Florida. From the beaches to the Central Florida attractions, some of Scott’s fondest childhood memories are rooted in Florida.It was no surprise that when it was time to choose a college, Scott applied nowhere else but Central Florida. He was accepted at Stetson University and graduated in 1981. In spite of job opportunities elsewhere, Scott decided to stay in Central Florida after graduation. He started a publishing company with a friend which published telephone directories for 11 Florida Universities.In 1984 Scott met Susie Rushing. They immediately fell in love and shortly thereafter they were married. The Plakon’s never considered starting a family anywhere else but Central Florida because of its charm and promise of unlimited opportunity. The young family quickly began to grow and today is blessed with six wonderful children seen in the Christmas card he sent constituents.

At one time or another, the Plakon children have attended public, private and home school. The Plakon’s have first hand knowledge about the strengths and challenges of educating children in our state and can relate to the concerns of parents today over what our children watch and listen to. As involved parents, Scott and Susie became involved with the Media Research Center and Scott has served as the Central Florida Chapter Director of the Parents Television Council.Last week Canada Free Press (CFP) reader and contributor J.D.
