Baby Enters Covenant – in Jericho

For the first time in many years, a Jewish baby boy entered the Biblical covenant in a brit milah (circumcision) ceremony in the ancient city of Jericho. The ceremony took place in the Shalom Al Yisrael synagogue.No Jewish events such as circumcisions or weddings have taken place in the synagogue for one decade, due to terrorism originating in Palestinian Authority-controlled regions of Judea and Samaria. The PA controls Jericho, and the city has become known as a refuge for terrorists.Members of the Jericho Group, a Jewish group dedicated to settlement in and around Jericho, said they welcome the groundbreaking event. However, they said, We will not rest until the Jewish people are able to return fully to the city of Jericho.The Jericho Group is involved in Jewish communities near Jericho, and leads tours of the historic region. Its members take part in prayers in Jericho and also lend their support to initiatives for Jewish return to Jewish holy sites elsewhere, such as the return to Joseph's Tomb.The Shalom Al Yisrael synagogue is an ancient synagogue that was discovered in modern times in 1936. It is thought to have been built in the seventh century. U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke’s two-year fight to shield crisis-squeezed banks from the stigma of revealing their public loans protected a lender to local governments in Belgium, a Japanese fishing-cooperative financier and a company part-owned by the Central Bank of Libya.

Dexia SA (DEXB), based in Brussels and Paris, borrowed as much as $33.5 billion through its New York branch from the Fed’s discount window lending program, according to Fed documents released yesterday in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. Dublin-based Depfa Bank Plc, taken over in 2007 by a German real-estate lender later seized by the German government, drew $24.5 billion.

The biggest borrowers from the 97-year-old discount window as the program reached its crisis-era peak were foreign banks, accounting for at least 70 percent of the $110.7 billion borrowed during the week in October 2008 when use of the program surged to a record. The disclosures may stoke a reexamination of the risks posed to U.S. taxpayers by the central bank’s role in global financial markets. The caricature of the Fed is that it was shoveling money to big New York banks and a bunch of foreigners, and that is not conducive to its long-run reputation,said Vincent Reinhart, the Fed’s director of monetary affairs from 2001 to 2007.

Commercial Paper

Separate data disclosed in December on temporary emergency- lending programs set up by the Fed also showed big foreign banks as borrowers. Six European banks were among the top 11 companies that sold the most debt overall -- a combined $274.1 billion -- to the Commercial Paper Funding Facility. Those programs also loaned hundreds of billions of dollars to the biggest U.S. banks, including JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM), Bank of America Corp. (BAC), Citigroup Inc. and Morgan Stanley. (MS) The discount window, which began lending in 1914, is the Fed’s primary program for providing cash to banks to help them avert a liquidity squeeze. In an April 2009 speech, Bernanke said that revealing the names of discount-window borrowers might lead market participants to infer weakness.The Fed released the documents after court orders upheld FOIA requests filed by Bloomberg LP, the parent company of Bloomberg News, and News Corp.’s Fox News Network LLC. In all, the Fed released more than 29,000 pages of documents, covering the discount window and several Fed emergency-lending programs established during the crisis from August 2007 to March 2010.

Public Outrage
The American people are going to be outraged when they understand what has been going on,U.S. Representative Ron Paul, a Texas Republican who is chairman of the House subcommittee that oversees the Fed, said in a Bloomberg Television interview.
What in the world are we doing thinking we can pass out tens of billions of dollars to banks that are overseas? said Paul, who has advocated abolishing the Fed. We have problems here at home with people not being able to pay their mortgages, and they’re losing their homes.David Skidmore, a Fed spokesman, declined to comment. Fed officials have said all the discount window loans made during the worst financial crisis since the 1930s have been repaid with interest. The Monetary Control Act of 1980 says that a U.S. branch or agency of a foreign bank that maintains reserves at a Fed bank may receive discount-window credit.Our job is to provide liquidity to keep the American economy going, Richard W. Fisher, president of the Federal Reserve’s regional bank in Dallas, told reporters today.The loans were all paid back and they were well-collateralized.

Wachovia’s Loans
Wachovia Corp. was the only U.S. bank among the top five discount-window borrowers as the crisis peaked.The company, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, borrowed $29 billion from the discount window on Oct. 6, in the week after it almost collapsed, the data show. Wachovia agreed in principle to sell itself to Citigroup Inc. on Sept. 29, before announcing a definitive agreement to sell itself to Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC) on Oct. 3. The Wells Fargo deal closed at the end of 2008.Wells Fargo spokeswoman Mary Eshet declined to comment on Wachovia’s discount-window borrowing.
Bank of Scotland Plc, which had $11 billion outstanding from the discount window on Oct. 29, 2008, was a unit of Edinburgh-based HBOS Plc, which announced its takeover by London-based Lloyds TSB Group Plc in September 2008.The borrowings in 2008 didn’t involve Lloyds, which hadn’t completed its acquisition of HBOS at the time, said Sara Evans, a spokeswoman for the company, which is now called Lloyds Banking Group Plc. Historic Use
This is historic usage and on each occasion the borrowing was repaid at maturity, Evans said.The discount window has not been accessed by the group since.Other foreign discount-window borrowers on Oct. 29, 2008, included Societe Generale (GLE) SA, France’s second-biggest bank; and Norinchukin Bank, which finances and provides services to Japanese agricultural, fishing and forestry cooperatives. Paris- based Societe Generale borrowed $5 billion that day, and Tokyo- based Norinchukin borrowed $6 billion.Jim Galvin, a spokesman for Societe Generale, declined to comment.We used it in concert with Japanese and U.S. authorities in the purpose of contributing to the stabilization of the market, said Fumiaki Tanaka, a spokesman at Norinchukin.

Bank of China
Bank of China, the country’s oldest bank, was the second- largest borrower from the Fed’s discount window during a nine- day period in August 2007 as subprime-mortgage defaults first roiled broader markets. The Chinese bank’s New York branch borrowed $198 million on Aug. 17 of that month.It was just routine borrowing, said Dale Zhu, head of the Bank of China New York branch’s treasury.Two Deutsche Bank AG divisions borrowed $1 billion each, according to a document released yesterday.Arab Banking Corp., then 29 percent-owned by the Libyan central bank, used its New York branch to get at least 73 loans from the Fed in the 18 months after Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. collapsed. The largest single loan amount outstanding was $1.2 billion in July 2009, according to the Fed documents.The foreign banks took advantage of Fed lending programs even as their host countries moved to prop them up or orchestrate takeovers.Dexia received billions of euros in capital and funding guarantees from France, Belgium and Luxembourg during the credit crunch.

High-Quality Collateral
The Fed loans were secured by high-quality U.S. dollar municipal securities, and used only to fund U.S. loans, bonds and other financial assets, Ulrike Pommee, a spokeswoman for the company, said in an e-mail.The Fed played its role as central banker, providing liquidity to banks that needed it, she said, adding that Dexia’s outstanding balance at the Fed has been reduced to zero. This information is backward-looking.Depfa was taken over in October 2007 by Hypo Real Estate Holding AG, which in turn was seized by the German government in 2009.Since the end of May 2010, Depfa is not making use of the Federal Reserve Discount Window, Oliver Gruss, a spokesman for the bank, said in an e-mailed statement. He declined to comment further.

Dollar Assets
Many foreign banks own large pools of dollar assets -- bonds, securities and loans -- funded by short-term borrowings in money markets. The system works when markets are calm, said Dino Kos, former executive vice president at the New York Fed in charge of open-market operations. In times of stress, banks can be subject to sudden liquidity squeezes, he said.They are playing with fire, said Kos, a managing director at Hamiltonian Associates Ltd. in New York, an economic research firm. When the market dries up, and they can’t roll over their funding -- bingo, you have a liquidity crisis.The potential for dollar shortages remains. As the Greek fiscal crisis roiled financial markets last year, the Fed had to open swap lines with the European Central Bank, the Swiss National Bank, the Bank of England and two other central banks to make more dollars available around the world. Ten UN workers killed' at Afghan Koran protest

KABUL (AFP) – Ten foreign UN workers were killed on Friday in an attack on the UN headquarters in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif by demonstrators protesting at the burning of the Koran by a US pastor, police told AFP.Ten (UN) people have been killed by the protesters (...) All the killed are foreigners, police spokesman Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai said.A spokesman for the UN mission in Kabul, Don McNorton, said: We are aware of an incident in our Mazar office, we are currently working to ascertain all the facts.Afghanistan had condemned the disrespectful and abhorrent burning of the Koran by evangelical preacher Pastor Wayne Sapp in a Florida church, calling it an effort to incite tension between religions.President Hamid Karzai called on the United States to bring those responsible for the burning of the Islamic holy book on March 21 to justice.Sapp set light to a Koran under the supervision of Terry Jones, who last year drew condemnation over his aborted plan to burn a pile of the holy books to mark the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.Jones cancelled his plans under enormous pressure from world leaders including US President Barack Obama, but the mere threat to burn the Muslim holy book sparked large protests in Afghanistan, where the UN and aid groups warned that civilians and aid workers in the country could be killed if the pastor went ahead.

Afghanistan is a deeply devout Islamic country where even rumours that the Koran has been insulted can result in deadly violence.In January last year seven tribesmen were killed when Afghan security forces opened fire at demonstrations sparked by the alleged desecration of a Koran by US troops in the southern province of Helmand, a hotbed of insurgency.The demonstrators were trying to overrun NATO bases and police facilities when they were fired on.A subsequent investigation by NATO and Afghan authorities found that no Koran had been torched during an operation by the Western troops.Afghan officials say the Taliban, the main militant group fighting the insurgency, fabricate stories that Western troops have insulted the religion in order to whip up anti-US sentiment.

These attempts are often successful.In May 2008, a foreign soldier serving under NATO command was killed during demonstrations by Afghan tribesmen against the shooting of a Koran by a US soldier in Iraq. Two Afghan protesters were also killed when the shooting broke out.Friday's attack followed a protest march led by religious clerics and attended by around 200 in Kabul on Friday against the Koran burning and plans announced by Karzai in February for possible permanent US bases in Afghanistan.The demonstrators, who left from mosques in downtown Kabul after Friday prayers, burned a US flag and stamped on it, shouting Death to America.

Nasdaq, ICE make rival bid for NYSE Euronext

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Nasdaq OMX and IntercontinentalExchange unveiled a rival bid to buy NYSE Euronext for about $11.3 billion in cash and stock, a 19 percent premium to the offer made by German competitor Deutsche Boerse.The move, announced on Friday, could raise new antitrust questions as it would combine the two largest U.S. stock exchanges. Already, the Deutsche Boerse bid was seen as likely to attract intense regulatory scrutiny as the merged company would have a lock on European exchange-traded derivatives.Deutsche Boerse's bid had also stirred political backlash from some lawmakers who opposed the idea of a foreign company taking over an emblematic Wall Street brand.The new offer is valued at $42.50 per share, Nasdaq and IntercontinentalExchange said. The offer represents a 19 percent premium to NYSE's closing price on Thursday and is 27 percent above the company's valuation before Deutsche Boerse's $10.2 billion bid in February.Under the proposal, ICE would purchase NYSE's valuable derivatives business while Nasdaq would acquire its stock exchanges and options businesses.It's quite a bold move from Nasdaq and ICE. Certainly I think the premium they're paying is quite high .., said Karl Morris, an analyst at Keefe Bruyette & Woods in London. It makes you wonder what Deutsche Boerse is going to do about this and I struggle to see how they can lift their bid to match.NYSE shares jumped about 10.5 percent at $38.63 in premarket trading, while Deutsche Boerse shares were down 0.2 percent in Frankfurt.

Nasdaq shares fell 0.9 percent to $25.60 and IntercontinentalExchange shares slipped 1.4 percent to $121.80 in premarket trade.Deutsche Boerse said it continues to strongly believe that the envisaged merger of Deutsche Boerse AG and NYSE Euronext is the best possible combination for both shareholder groups and the stakeholders of the companies.For now, Deutsche Boerse is studying the offer and relying on Nasdaq shareholders and U.S. regulators to scrutinize the deal before deciding its next move, a person familiar with Deutsche Boerse's thinking said on Friday.NYSE Euronext said its board would carefully review the new offer and urged shareholders not to take any action pending its review.The counterbid comes amid an expected wave of tie-ups in the increasingly competitive and global exchange business, where companies are linking up and pushing into derivatives to survive and grow.Bringing Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange together would create a stock-trading powerhouse in the United States and Europe that would also dominate the business of listing U.S. public companies, and dwarf other U.S. options markets.If successful, a counter-offer could redraw the global exchange map and be a bold move by Nasdaq Chief Executive Robert Greifeld, who has a mixed deal-making record.ICE, an Atlanta-based futures specialist, would get London's profitable LIFFE platform, giving CEO Jeffrey Sprecher an interest-rate business that eluded him when ICE's bid for the Chicago Board of Trade failed four years ago.But with other exchange deals driven largely by a need to diversify and ramp up profitable derivatives trading, a Nasdaq deal with the NYSE would only expand in the core, low-margin, stock-trading business -- and could raise questions for shareholders.In a flurry in February, Deutsche Boerse agreed to buy NYSE, the London Stock Exchange Group Plc announced a deal to take over Canadian market operator TMX Group Inc and BATS Global Markets said it will buy peer Chi-X Europe.

When Deutsche Boerse unveiled its bid for NYSE Euronext, Chief Executive Reto Francioni acknowledged that we have a bumpy road ahead of us.Beyond antitrust issues, there have been questions about what the merged company would be called, as the New York Stock Exchange is seen as occupying an iconic role in American business. The Blatant Deception of the Libyan War

27 March 2011: Prior to United Nations sanctioned military action by the West (EU, US, CAN) the Western media was prompt to report to our population the urgent calls from the fighters and civilians on the ground opposing Qaddafi and the Arab League for our intervention; to save the Libyan people from Qaddafi’s genocide. Who started this war in Libya, and under what ideological banner? Could it be the same group of Islamic agitators as exists elsewhere in the world – Islamic fundamentalists? The al-Ikhwan al-Muslimun. The Muslim Brotherhood. This is same group and Islamist ideology the socialist left in the West loves to promote as a cause célèbre. Freedom fighters and defenders of the common Muslim men, women and children against the anti-democratic despots and their totalitarian regimes supported by the West to the tune of billions of dollars for decades. The corporate media in the US have even gone so far as to heap praise and hero worship upon the anti-Qaddafi fighters, including suicide and IED bombers identical to those repeatedly attacking major Western cities such as Jerusalem, Madrid, Paris, London, New York City and Washington, D.C. This is the same ideology as is being opposed by our nation’s finest heroes and our dwindling treasury in Afghanistan and Iraq for the better part of the past 10 years, and was completely unopposed in any meaningful way going back to the first WTC bombing in 1993.

So we find ourselves intervening in an illegal, undeclared war in Libya, characterized by our national leadership as a kinetic military action, for the purpose of preventing genocide against the same Islamic freedom fighters as we have fought against all this time in Afghanistan and Iraq. Tell me, why are our armed forces responding to the Libyan civil war? Does not the Arab League possess enough military hardware, fighting men and treasury to oppose Qaddafi and they have consistently done against the State of Israel for the past 63 years? Why do the Arab Muslims need our military forces to do their dirty work? We’re told by our national leadership that our efforts in Libya will ultimate result in democracy coming to the Libyan people. Really? Do they mean the same kind of democracy that came to the Gaza Strip or Lebanon? There is enough information in this brief article to wake up all but the most comatose, consciousness-suspended or gleefully misinformed among us regarding the reality of the situation. In case you’re still unsure about that which I write, allow me to be as blunt as Diana West has been: Our military forces have joined the Islamic Jihad. So how does it feel to be the Global Jihad’s rent-a-cop?

While the doomsayers continue to sing the Swan Song of Americans in loud and screeching voices, most Americans are covering their bases, Dub and Deb style.Dub and Deb are the husband and wife team behind Ridin’ Out the Recession, now the fastest growing feature on Canada Free Press.In the mounting political unrest sent almost daily from the Obama Regime, real life continues sunrise to sunset. No one needs permission from the Oval Office to survive. Obama’s message, omnipresent only two years ago, is becoming more and more blurred. People are tuning out on his running dog news networks and tuning in to the Internet and to talk show radio. Obama and his Czars waited decades too late to turn the United States of America over to the UN’s One World Government, proof positive that you can’t expect success after sitting around toking since the 1960s, dude.Years of living life on earth have long ago taught the people to put their families first and it would take more than a politician leading a Shadow Government to have them give up on their own survival.

King of the World Barack Obama and his soft-living bureaucrats at the world’s largest, talk-only bureaucracy, have written off the populations of nations too quickly. For them to advance their Marxist goal of One World Government, they need to kill off the indomitable human spirit of untold billions.Today the Pond, Tomorrow the World is only the stuff of comic books and movies. Insisting on living in a pretend world surrounded by movie stars inevitably brings the rude awakening of reality.Even amidst the largely manufactured disasters of economic depressions, political unrest and insurrections, people are getting by.In America, the people know enough that until the course becomes clear to ignore the political strategies of a 2012 bound Barack Obama and his band of merry Dems.They know there was nothing magic or special about the president before he invented himself through booklore and that there’s nothing special about him now so have moved on.Not difficult to see straight through people who push Nutrition on the same Americans, who have have turned back to gardening and canning as the best way to feed their families.Simply put it is not the little people who count on specially flown in pizza but the high handed, squandering luxury Obamas, and the little people who continue to teach their families and friends that the best veggies come from the home garden and not supermarket shelves.

Nor can Nutrition Nazis like Michelle Obama teach the masses anything about gardening. She used sludge on her White House garden, while the little people use the same cow and sheep manure that their grandparents did.The silly Obamas keep People Pique on their strategy radar by always leaving Dodge for another vacation, not realizing that the vacation folk most look forward to is the permanent one; the one in which Barack and Michelle with family and friends go abroad to lord it over some other country in ultimate luxury, the last vacation from which they never return.In the meantime, scares will abound daily in the panic-pushing mainstream media. Radiation from Japan has found its way to American milk. Bird and swine flu are making a comeback. North American nuclear reactors are built along earthquake fault lines, global warming, hot or cold, is going to kill off the entire human race.Then there is the uptick in natural disasters. People have been surviving whatever Mother Nature has thrown at them since time immemorial.It is the soft living politicians and UN bureaucrats who panic, not the people.This is what people going about their own business trying to survive the recession may have missed in one morning’s news headlines today: Budget Negotiations Reach Tentative Deal.(Wow, we can all draw a big sigh of relief!)

EU commission keen to set up new counter-terrorism office

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The European Commission is testing the water for creating a new EU internal security body on the model of Catherine Ashton's European External Action Service (EEAS).Speaking at a European Parliament hearing in Brussels on Wednesday (30 March), commission counter-terrorism director Olivier Luyckx envisaged a new entity that would pull together existing security agencies Cepol, Cosi, Eurojust, Europol and Frontex under EU counter-terrorism co-ordinator Gilles de Kerchove.There is new room for action at EU level, he said.This is how I see the change: to set up a system that would mirror the one that is being set up for monitoring external crises [in the EEAS], a one-stop shop for information-sharing.

Luyckx cited Guideline V on Operational Co-ordination of the EU's recently-adopted Internal Security Strategy as containing the embryo of the project: Today, crisis centres in member states share contacts and information on a voluntary and informal basis. We need to go a step further and to see, while respecting the division of labour set up in the EU treaty, how to make those linkages in a tighter way.He underlined that the new body would not be an EU intelligence service which carries out its own operations in the field. We have no mandate, no appetite and no perspective for doing intelligence work. But we are prepared to add value if mandated by member states, Luyckx said. Speaking at the same hearing, Austrian counter-terrorism chief Peter Gridling went even further.It is time to ask ourselves this question: Is it realistic to start thinking about a future EU intelligence service? he said.I think it's realistic to start thinking about it.Austria and Belgium first proposed a European intelligence service after the Madrid train bombing in 2004. But they were shot down by big member states, not least the UK. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Fresh stress tests conducted on Irish banks have revealed a €24 billion capital shortfall, with Dublin rapidly announcing a restructuring plan that will likely see the country's entire banking sector brought under government control.Announcing the results of the tests on Thursday, Irish central bank chief Patrick Honohan said:This proves to have been one of the costliest banking crises in history.The stress tests gauged the ability of Irish banks to withstand further losses in a deteriorating economic environment, concentrating primarily on mortgage losses.They found that Allied Irish Banks, once Ireland's leading lender, needs €13.3 billion in additional capital. A 100-year battle awaits Fukushima

-You’ve probably already heard that there have been efforts to use robots to help solve the Fukushima crisis, but those efforts have failed. Then again, who needs robots when you can just pay humans to do the same deadly work? Why would anyone agree to do such a thing? Because they’re being promised extra pay, if you can believe that.You gotta wonder, of course, how these people think they’re going to be able to spend all that extra money if they’re half-dead from radiation poisoning. EMERGENCY NUCLEAR WORKERS RECRUITED

Nuclear workers have been offered up to 400,000 yen ($5,000) per day to work in risky high-radiation conditions inside reactors at the Fukushima plant, according to Japanese media.TEPCO says it was considering using jumpers, or workers who rush into highly radioactive reactors for quick jobs, such as installing water pumps, then jump out to avoid prolonged exposure to radiation. The practice was common in the United States in the 1970s and early 80s.France is a global leader in the nuclear industry and Paris has flown in experts from state-owned nuclear reactor maker Areva to work with Japanese engineers.Areva has also shipped 11,000 hazmat suits and thousands of protective breathing masks to be used in and around the nuclear plants.

The United States and Germany are sending robots to work in the highly radioactive parts of the reactors. Kyodo said around 140 U.S. military radiation safety experts would arrive.U.S. nuclear workers were also being recruited to join the recovery teams at Fukushima and will begin flying in on Sunday.These are not jumpers rushing into a room. TEPCO is bringing in robots to help limit human exposure to high levels of radiation, said Joe Melanson, a recruiter at specialist nuclear industry staffing firm Bartlett Nuclear in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Gaddafi forces storm Misrata, rebels offer truce

TRIPOLI/AJDABIYAH, Libya (Reuters) – Muammar Gaddafi's forces stormed the western rebel outpost of Misrata with tanks and artillery on Friday, a rebel spokesman said, while insurgents marshaled defenses in their eastern heartland.A rebel leader speaking after talks with a U.N. envoy in Benghazi offered a ceasefire on condition Gaddafi left Libya and his forces withdrew from cities now under government control. It was unclear if the offer was part of broader diplomatic moves to end a conflict that appears deadlocked on the military front.Rebels speaking from Misrata said Gaddafi's forces had brought their superior firepower to bear on the insurgents' last western enclave with an intense bombardment.They used tanks, rocket-propelled grenades, mortar rounds and other projectiles to hit the city today. It was random and very intense bombardment,the spokesman, called Sami, told Reuters by telephone.We no longer recognize the place. The destruction cannot be described.The pro-Gaddafi soldiers who made it inside the city through Tripoli Street are pillaging the place, the shops, even homes, and destroying everything in the process.
They are targeting everyone, including civilians' homes. I don't know what to say, may Allah help us, he said.The account from Misrata, Libya's third biggest city 200 km (130 miles) east of Tripoli, could not be verified. Authorities do not allow journalists to report freely from the city.A doctor in Misrata told Reuters in an email that the 32nd Brigade, one of the best-equipped and trained units, had been sent early on Friday to seize control of the city.So the question is where is the international community? the doctor said.

The report has not been confirmed.Libyan rebels moved heavier weaponry toward government forces at the eastern oil town of Brega on Friday and sought to marshal rag-tag units into a more disciplined force to fend off Gaddafi's regular army and turn the tide of recent events.Rebels said neither side could claim control of Brega, one of a string of oil towns along the Mediterranean coast that have been taken and retaken by each side in recent weeks.But there were signs on Friday of a more ordered approach. Rebels said more trained officers were at the front, heavier rockets were seen moving toward Ajdabiyah late on Thursday and the checkpoint was screening those going through.Only those who have large weapons are being allowed through. The new approach has yet to be tested after the rout rebels sustained this week when a two-day rebel advance forward along about 200 km (125 miles) of coast west from Brega was repulsed and turned into a rapid retreat over the following two days.On the road between Ajdabiyah and Benghazi, gun emplacements were set up in freshly dug ditches with sand berms facing toward Ajdabiyah and the front line, the first sign of organised defensive positions protecting the rebel capital.

Asked if he had seen any covert Western operatives at the front line with rebels, Zaitoun said: I wish. They have great technology. They would have useful guidance for us. I have heard many things but I haven't seen anything yet.The top U.S. military officer said Gaddafi's forces were not close to collapse. We have actually fairly seriously degraded his military capabilities, Admiral Mike Mullen said.That does not mean he's about to break from a military standpoint.U.S. government sources told Reuters U.S. intelligence operatives were on the ground in Libya before Obama signed the order, to contact opponents of Gaddafi and assess their capabilities. Libyan opposition says it has oil deal with Qatar

BENGHAZI, Libya – A plan to sell rebel-held oil to buy weapons and other supplies has been reached with Qatar, a rebel official said Friday, in another sign of deepening aid for Libya's opposition by the wealthy Gulf state after sending warplanes to help confront Moammar Gadhafi's forces.It was not immediately clear when the possible oil sales could begin or how the arms would reach the rebel factions, but any potential revenue stream would be a significant lifeline for the militias and military defectors battling Gadhafi's superior forces.Rebel units were pushed back about 100 miles (160 kilometers) this week along the Mediterranean coast, but still held parts of oil-rich eastern Libya and the key city of Benghazi. In recent clashes, rebels displayed more firepower including mortars and rockets, but remain significantly outgunned.Ali Tarhouni, who handles finances for the opposition's National Transitional Council, said that Qatar has agreed to market oil currently in storage in parts of southeastern Libya. He said one sticking point is how to truck the oil out of the country.Tarhouni said money from oil sales will be put into an escrow account the opposition will use to pay for weapons, food, medicine, fuel and other needs.

There was no immediate comment from officials in Qatar, one of the few Arab states taking part in the international military contingent enforcing a no-fly zone in Libya. Qatar is also assisting a rebel satellite TV operation that began broadcasts this week from Qatar's capital Doha and has agreed to host a meeting of Libyan opposition groups.A spokesman for Qatar Petroleum, the state company responsible for selling the Gulf nation's oil, declined to comment.In London earlier this week, Britain's foreign secretary, William Hague, said Qatar had offered to facilitate oil sales that are consistent with international law. Hague did not provide details about who would be supported, how the facilitation process would work, or how Qatar's offer has been received by diplomats.It has been unclear how exactly such an arrangement would work. The effort to get oil out is hampered by several factors, including the rebels' ability to hold eastern oil production and export facilities, the departure of skilled foreign oil-field workers and international sanctions that technically apply to the country as a whole.OPEC member Libya produced about output of 1.6 million barrels per day of oil before the conflict, just under 2 percent of world production.Qatar — host of the U.S. Army's Middle East command hub — has significantly boosted its international profile in recent years with diplomatic initiatives and top-level sporting events, including being picked to host the 2022 World Cup.The 22-member Arab League was critical in winning U.N. Qatar also has agreed to host the first meeting of an international contact group aimed at coordinating political action and opening channels with Libya's opposition. According the the Israel Defense Forces, Hizbullah has built bunkers and underground weapons depots in most southern Lebanese villages as it continues building its army, the Associated Press reports.A memo from the IDF brass to Israeli embassies on Thursday to Israel details the acceleration of Hizbullah's fortification of the volatile border region since the end of the 2006 Lebanon war.The memo says, Hezbollah has built as many as 550 bunkers in the southern Lebanon region, holding various weapons. In addition, the organization has built 300 underground facilities and 100 storage units for munitions including rockets, missiles and other weapons.

Many of these terror centers are located near hospitals, private homes and schools, Hezbollah's way of taking advantage of the civilian population of Lebanon, the memo said, citing Hizbullah's well-established tactic of placing fighters and munitions among civilians - a war crime - in order to create bad press for Israel when civilians become collateral damage in strikes on such targets.A military spokesman also confirmed a map published by the Washington Post detailing the exact sites of these facilities was supplied by the IDF.During second Lebanon War, which lasted for 34-days in 2006, Hizbullah used similar tactics. But the current build-up takes the stategy to an all new level as Hizbullah seeks to work out of the reach of UN peacekeepers -- and into heavily populated civilian areas, Israel says.Current estimates show Hezbollah has an arsenal of 40,000 short- and medium-range rockets stored in towns villages south of the Litani River. Hizbullah has also obtained long-range rockets. PA Arab Attacks Jewish Farmer with Hoe

A group of Palestinian Arab men attacked Jewish farmers on Friday morning near the town of Netzer in Gush Etzion. The attack, reported by Women for Israel's Future (formerly Women in Green) activists, was one in a series of similar incidents in the area.Six Arab men approached the farmers as they went about their work, and demanded that they leave, claiming that the land they were cultivating belongs to Arabs. When the farmers refused a fight broke out during which one of the PA men attacked a Jew with a hoe, causing him injuries.Police later arrested one of the PA attackers.

Jewish activists noted that the land in question is definitely state owned, and is not Arab property. The issue has been investigated in the past due to similar Arab claims, and the land was found to be Jewish owned, they said.Clashes first broke out half a year ago, when local Jews began agricultural activity in an open area near Netzer. SEATTLE – John Anderson has discovered just about everything during the 30 years he's combed Washington state's beaches — glass fishing floats, hockey gloves, bottled messages, even hundreds of mismatched pairs of Nike sneakers that washed up barnacled but otherwise unworn.The biggest haul may come in one to three years when, scientists say, wind and ocean currents eventually will push some of the massive debris from Japan's tsunami and earthquake onto the shores of the U.S. West Coast.
I'm fascinated to see what actually makes it over here, compared to what might sink or biodegrade out there, said Anderson, 57, a plumber and avid beachcomber who lives in the coastal town of Forks, Wash.The floating debris will likely be carried by currents off of Japan toward Washington, Oregon and California before turning toward Hawaii and back again toward Asia, circulating in what is known as the North Pacific gyre, said Curt Ebbesmeyer, a Seattle oceanographer who has spent decades tracking flotsam.Ebbesmeyer, who has traced Nike sneakers, plastic bath toys and hockey gloves accidentally spilled from Asia cargo ships, is now tracking the massive debris field moving across the Pacific Ocean from Japan. He relies heavily on a network of thousands of beachcombers such as Anderson to report the location and details of their finds.If you put a major city through a trash grinder and sprinkle it on the water, that's what you're dealing with, he said.

As to whether any of the debris might be radioactive from the devastation at Japanese nuclear power plants, James Hevezi, chair of the American College of Radiology Commission on Medical Physics, said there could be.But it would be very low risk, Hevezi said.The amount that would be on the stuff by the time it reached the West Coast would be minimal.Only a small portion of that debris will wash ashore, and how fast it gets there and where it lands depends on buoyancy, material and other factors. Fishing vessels or items that poke out of the water and are more likely influenced by wind may show up in a year, while items like lumber pieces, survey stakes and household items may take two to three years, he said.If the items aren't blown ashore by winds or get caught up in another oceanic gyre, they'll continue to drift in the North Pacific loop and complete the circle in about six years, Ebbesmeyer said.The material that is actually blown in will be a fraction of the tsunami debris, said Curt Peterson, a coastal oceanographer and professor of in the geology department at Portland State University in Oregon. Some will break up in transit. A lot of it will miss our coast. Some will split up and head up to Gulf of Alaska and (British Columbia).All this debris will find a way to reach the West coast or stop in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a swirling mass of concentrated marine litter in the Pacific Ocean, said Luca Centurioni, a researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego.The dispersion is pretty large, so it's not like a straight shot from Tokyo to San Francisco, said Centurioni, the principal investigator for the Global Drifter Program funded by NOAA. The program deploys about 900 satellite-tracked drifting buoys each year throughout the world to collect sea surface temperature and other data.Much of the debris will be plastic, which doesn't completely break down. That raises concerns about marine pollution and the potential harm to marine life. But the amount of tsunami debris, while massive, still pales in comparison to the litter that is dumped into oceans on a regular basis, Ebbesmeyer said.

Ebbesmeyer and retired NOAA researcher Jim Ingraham are using a computer program to plot the path of debris from March 11 tsunami to add to growing knowledge about ocean currents. The modeling relies on weather data collected by U.S. Navy, and the researchers are waiting for the monthly release of that data to make their first projections.Ingraham developed the program to figure out the effects of ocean currents on salmon migration, but the two also have been using it plot the path of a multitude of floating junk.Ebbesmeyer first became interested in flotsam when he heard reports of beachcombers finding hundreds of water-soaked shoes in Washington, Oregon and Alaska. An Asia cargo ship bound for the U.S. in 1990 had spilled thousands of Nike shoes into the middle of the North Pacific Ocean. He was able to trace serial numbers on shoes to the cargo ship, giving him the points where they began drifting in the ocean and where they landed.The oceanographer also has tracked plastic bath toys — frogs, turtle, ducks and beavers — that fell overboard a cargo ship in 1992 in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and were later found in Sitka, Alaska. Anderson says he constantly scans the beaches watching for something that catches his eye. He's found about 20 bottled messages, mostly from schoolchildren, and the several hundred Nike sneakers, which he cleaned up by soaking in water and eventually gave away, sold or swapped.In two years, there's going to be stuff coming in (from Japan), and probably lots of it,he said.Some of it is bound to come in.

ATHENS, Greece – A strong earthquake struck the southern Greek island of Crete Friday, rattling buildings as far away as Egypt and Turkey. Local police said they had no immediate reports of damage or injuries.The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 and struck off the southern coast of Crete at 4:29 p.m. (1329 GMT, 8:29 EDT), the Athens Geological Institute and the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany, said. The U.S. Geological Survey gave a slightly lower preliminary magnitude of 5.9. Magnitudes recorded by geological institutes often differ.Police in Ierapetra, a town on the southern coast of Crete closest to the epicenter, said it was strongly felt but that they had no initial reports of damage or injuries.

Palestinian Authority activists have recreated the Third Intifada page that was banned by Facebook on Tuesday in response to thousands of member requests.An Israeli Cabinet minister, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and a massive Internet campaign were only some of the measures used to pressure the popular social networking site into removing the page, which promoted violence against Jews in Israel.But the story doesn't end there, because angry Palestinian Authority sponsors of the page ensured the fight would continue. A Muslim page similarly entitled Subscribe now to the Palestinian Intifada, on its logo but which is innocuously entitled Make the Prophet Number One on Facebook on the heading is listed under Non-profit Organizations.
Easily the largest and most popular Muslim page on Facebook, it espouses peace and offers myriad beneficent comments about Allah and Islam's founder, the Prophet Muhammed. But the Rassoul Allaah page also directs readers to directs readers to a wealth of links to other pages promoting the Third Intifada and a massive attempt to carry out the destruction of the State of Israel.

By Wednesday afternoon, the page had garnered more than three million -- 3,293,252 --votes of support from Facebook members around the world. This same false Palestinian narrative has morphed into a belief that all Muslims—who are, themselves, the largest practitioners of religious apartheid in the world, and who persecute all non-Muslims—are, as Muslims, being persecuted in the West. This may be because Islam is not (yet) dominant in the West.In my opinion, the success of the Palestinian narrative is what has led to the unquestioning acceptance of the false concept of Islamophobia.Those Europeans who have challenged the idea of “Islamophobia” and who have told the truth about Islam in Europe—or who have chosen to leave the Religion of Peace—have put themselves in harm’s way. Either they are sued for blasphemy or defamation—or they must live in exile and with bodyguards. Some have been murdered, even butchered.What about America? Surely that is not true here.In 2008, America’s FBI found that 66.1% of religious hate crimes targeted Jews, but only 7.5% of religious hate crimes targeted Muslims. On March 29, 2011, The Center for Security Policy released a revised edition of their groundbreaking longitudinal study, Religious Bias Crimes 2000-2009: Muslim, Jewish and Christian Victims — Debunking the Myth of a Growing Trend in Muslim Victimization. It is based on annual FBI statistics and contradicts the assertions that religious bias crimes against Muslims have increased in America and that the alleged cause is widespread Islamophobia. In fact, the study shows that religious bias crimes — also known as hate crimes — against Muslim Americans, have remained relatively low with a downward trend since 2001, and are significantly less than the numbers of bias crimes against Jewish victims.

According to the Center’s analysis, in 2009, Jewish victims of hate crimes outnumbered Muslim victims by more than 8 to 1 (1,132 Jewish victims to 132 Muslim victims). From 2000 through 2009, for every one hate crime incident against a Muslim, there were six hate crime incidents against Jewish victims (1,580 Muslim incidents versus 9,692 Jewish incidents). Even in 2001 when religious bias crimes against Muslims increased briefly for a nine-week period, total anti-Muslim incidents, offenses and victims remained approximately half of the corresponding anti-Jewish totals.Nevertheless, American Muslims have alleged rampant Islamophobia in America. Countless number of Talking Heads have taken this allegation seriously.
Thus, it is not surprising that CNN just aired a documentary which was titled Not Welcome: The Muslims Next Door.On camera, the Muslims are all so very…peaceful. There is not one angry or hate-filled Muslim man on camera. Not one. Despite the fact that we have seen hundreds, possibly thousands of angry, frightening, violent Muslim demonstrations, including prayer services, all across America and across the Islamic world, and many hate-filled captured Islamic and Palestinian terrorists on camera, CNN’s chosen Muslim-American men of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, including the Sheikh of the planned Islamic Center, are all soft-spoken, emotional, tearful, non-violent. Except for the Sheikh’s American wifewho converted to Islam, the Muslims on camera are all innocent, good, non-white people.Soledad O’Brien, CNN’s special anchor, likes them, and, as someone with Afro-Cuban as well as Caucasian Australian parents, perhaps she even identifies with them. In any event, O’Brien questions them very politely, sympathetically.However, the white, Christian-Americans on camera—all of them, without exception—are portrayed as hateful, cruel, insidious, dislikable, selfish, phobic, and no doubt racist. O’Brien interviews them with barely disguised hostility and contempt.At issue, according to CNN’s website are America’s post-9/11 fears about radical Islam, terrorism, and Sharia Law. It is not diverse enough.It is not Middle Eastern enough.O’Brien, herself a Harvard graduate, dresses as a modern American woman. She has absolutely no comment to make about the fact that most of the adult Muslim women on camera are all wearing long, shapeless dresses and severe hijab—while the Muslim men are all dressed in modern, American style. The Sheikh’s wife insists that women are not oppressed under Sharia Law, that she is not oppressed, that no Muslim woman she knows has ever been oppressed, etc.Interestingly enough, the Sheikh has a foreign accent. One wonders why so many Sheiks have been imported from the Middle East to America. Asra Nomani is a religious Muslim feministwho was born in India and raised in America. Her father founded the mosque of Morgantown, West Virginia. Nomani tried to persuade her mosque to become more woman-friendly. She failed. In a PBSdocumentary about this story, Nomani claimed that when Arab Muslims joined her mosque, her battle to bring it into the 21st century failed. On camera, she says:Extremists — mainly Arabs — led by one rather physically and verbally violent Egyptian, Hany Ammar, took over. At that point, I began hearing really scary sermons. An unchaste woman is worthless. The West is on a bad path. We must hate those who hate us. Women should be silent in a mosque. Jews are descendants of apes and pigs.Incredibly, on camera, Ammar says: I pray to Allah that you be punished. May Allah get revenge for Ammar. Ammar is also heard, but not seen, physically attacking a young moderate Muslim man. Ammar’s wife Mona is even more conservative, more aggressive than he is. She minces no words in expressing her contempt, even hatred for Nomani. Like certain kinds of religious women, she is even more zealous in upholding the patriarchal status quo, more aggressively empowered to strike down any other woman who dares challenge male supremacy or Islamic gender apartheid.

Ultimately, Ammar tries to ban Nomani from the mosque. Eventually, both she and her family leave.Why do I even bring this in? Because Murfreesboro’s Sheikh Ossama Mohamed Bahloul is also a foreign-born Arab Muslim. All this means is that he may (or may not) be a religious Muslim supremacist or an Islamist. Bahloul is an Egyptian-born graduate of Al-Azhar University in Cairo. He was the Imam of the Islamic Society of Southern Texas, in Corpus Christi, and then the visiting Imam for the Islamic Center of Irving, Texas.Sheikh Bahloul is not a terrorist, nor did he have anything to do with the trial of the Holy Land Foundation, an organization which raised money for Hamas and was based in a suburb of Dallas, Texas. However, he was summoned from Egypt to work in Texas, and left for Murfreesboro a year after the Holy Land trial began. Texas is known as a hotbed of increasingly fundamentalist Islam. Perhaps Bahloul was chosen for his radical beliefs and for his ability to mask them as something else. After all, his wife is dressed as if they live in Cairo, not in America.To me, this is a sign and signal of a desire to live in a parallel universe, one in which Muslims are taught that they are superior to non-Muslims; one in which Muslims are taught to hate Jews and other infidels;one in which Muslims are taught that Sharia Law is, indeed, superior to American law. That is why CNN invites Harvard Professor Noah Feldman on. He assures people that Our constitution prohibits any religion from becoming the law of the land.It does. But look at how Sharia law and/or Islamic custom has usurped the law of the land both in Europe and in America, where female genital mutilation, child arranged marriage, polygamy, the burqa and honor killings are pandemic.An Egyptian father killed his two American daughters in Irving, Texas. Yaser Said came from Egypt, married his American-born wife when she was fifteen years old, honor murdered their daughters in 2008, and then fled. He has yet to be found.

A series of attacks were perpetrated against the building of the mosque. Not Welcome was spray painted on the sign which announced the mosque opening, arson was perpetrated, a lawsuit was brought. The graffiti and the arson are unacceptable. But no one who opposes the mosque is given a fair hearing or the slightest respect on camera. And, Sheikh Bahloul may be as clever as he is soft-spoken. In a very emotional but determined voice, pitched precisely to gain sympathy for his causehe says: This is America. This is too much.Ah, so the Egyptian-born Sheikh understands America and fully knows what his rights are here. Funny, he only arrived here post 9/11. Actually, for all I know, he could have arrived here sooneror more recently. None of his many biographies and interviews share this information with us.Is he, perhaps, asecret lover of Zion, an admirer of the American way of life, a Sufi-style peaceful Sunni Muslim? He graduated from the most prominent school of Islamic learning in the Sunni world. If he is really a man for the 21st century, he will have to take some very prominent and public stands which prove that this is so.

Fukushima Nuke Plant Now in Full Meltdown

Reactor number two at the Fukushima Daiichi has gone into full meltdown, although this is not being reported by the corporate media. The core has melted through the floor of the containment building and is now releasing large amounts of radiation.
Richard Lahey, who was head of safety research for boiling-water reactors at General Electric when the company installed the units at Fukushima, told the Guardian on Tuesday workers at the site appeared to have lost the race to save the reactor.The indications we have, from the reactor to radiation readings and the materials they are seeing, suggest that the core has melted through the bottom of the pressure vessel in unit two, and at least some of it is down on the floor of the drywell, Lahey said.I hope I am wrong, but that is certainly what the evidence is pointing towards.On March 12, the Japanese government assured its citizens there was no possiblity of a nuclear meltdown. Five days later, Japan’s nuclear agency raised tbe severity rating of the nuclear crisis from a Level 4 to Level 5 on a seven-level international scale.On March 29, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said his government is in a state of maximum alert over high-level radiation leaked from the plant.Also on Tuesday, it was reported that deadly plutonium had leaked from reactor number two. Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency insisted the leak was not harmful to human life.

Sakae Muto, Tokyo Electric vice-president, said the amount of plutonium-238, 239 and 240 released into the atmosphere was on par with past nuclear tests. I apologize for making people worried, he said.Record-high readings of contaminated sea water were found near the plant, Bloomberg reports. Radioactive iodine in seawater rose to 3,355 times the regulated safety limit yesterday afternoon from 2,572 times earlier in the day, agency spokesman Hidehiko Nishiyama said. Nishiyama said the radiation is not a threat because there is no fishing in the area.Experts say a reactor in meltdown will stop at or before the underlying soil of the containment structure, but will release massive amount of radiation into the atmosphere and ground causing extensive damage to plant and animal life. This process is now underway at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.Meanwhile, there appears to be problems with a second nuclear plant. Tokyo Electric Power Co. said smoke was reported coming from the turbine building of reactor No. 1 at the Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant earlier today. The Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant is about 6 miles from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Small amounts of radiation thought to come from Japan's crisis-stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant have been detected across Europe. On Tuesday (29 March), Britain's Health Protection Agency (HPA) said "the minutest levels of radioactive iodine had been detected at its air monitoring stations in Oxfordshire and Glasgow over the past nine days.It stressed however that the levels were too low to cause any risk to human health, peaking at 300 micro-becquerels per cubic metre but averaging a much lower 11 micro-becquerels over the nine-day period.
Levels may rise in the coming days and weeks but they will be significantly below any level that could cause harm to public health,the HPA said in a statement.Similar amounts of radioactive material have been detected in Germany and Switzerland, as workers in Japan continue their struggle to prevent radioactive water from seeping into the sea.It emerged on Tuesday that seawater near the damaged Fukushima nuclear reactors is more contaminated that previously reported, with water near reactor 1 containing radioactive iodine at 3,355 times the legal limit, according to Japan's nuclear safety agency.

Iodine 131's relatively short half-life of eight days, the time it takes to halve the radiation through natural decay, reduces the likelihood of risk to humans said an official. Even considering its concentration in marine life, it will have deteriorated considerably by the time it reaches people, Hidehiko Nishiyama, deputy director-general of Japan's nuclear safety agency said.In the Ukraine, Iodine 131 was blamed for the high occurrence of thyroid cancer among children exposed to radioactivity after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.Japanese officials are also fighting to prevent more dangerous radioactive liquid seeping into the sea, after small amounts of plutonium were detected in soil at the plant.Shipping companies are currently working on contingency plans to prevent boats passing near Japan from carrying contaminated materials across the globe.The MOL Presence was turned away from a Chinese port this week after Geiger counters detected higher-than-normal radiation levels, reports Financial Times Deutschland. Russian decision boosts Moldova's EU entry prospects

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov made the offer on the three ammunitions depots located in the disputed Moldovan region of Transniestria during talks with Moldova's foreign minister Iurie Leanca in Moscow on Tuesday (29 March).We see absolutely the same final aim: a special status for the Dniester area within the territorial integrity of the Moldovan Republic, a state with constitutional neutrality, which we regard as a substantial contribution to creating a new security architecture in the European continent, the Russian minister said, according to the Itar-Tass news agency.Of course the sides themselves should agree on this, above all, on the basis of equality and mutual respect, as is proper for negotiating parties, he added, on the need for rebel leaders in Transniestria to negotiate a deal with Chisinau.Lavrov's statement follows a meeting with EU diplomats in the Russian capital two weeks back in which he said Russia wants to start formal Transniestria conflict-settlement talks in June in the so-called 5+2 format.

The 5+2 group - which includes the Transniestria rebels, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, the Vienna-based pro-democracy body the OSCE, the EU and the US - are to hammer out the details of the June talks at a meeting in Vienna on Monday. This is a real breakthrough, a senior EU diplomat told this website.Transniestria broke away from Moldova in a brief civil war in the 1990s. The unrecognised Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic has in previous talks failed to agree on how much power and what kind of semi-autonomous status it is to have in a new federal-type structure.But an even bigger sticking-point has been what to do with the Russian military facilities and the 1,200-or-so Russian soldiers which guard them. The EU has, for its part, torpedoed previous deals which envisaged letting the Russians stay indefinitely. It has also made clear that Moldova cannot enter the EU in its divided state following the negative experience of Cyprus. The Greek Cypriot side pulled away from UN efforts to make peace with the unrecognised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus after the divided island joined the union. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk speaking at an event in Chisinau on Tuesday promised to help steer Moldova into the EU.We are convinced that this [Moldova's EU accession] is in the interests of Moldova, Poland and all of Europe, he said, according to the Polish Press Agency. You have showed that even in difficult circumstances and in difficult times you can go forward with your head held high.We are counting on progress here [on Transniestria], he added. We will help you with that.

The Moldovan leader, Vlad Filat, noted that EU support is an enormous motivating factor in terms of political reforms and the fight against corruption. We will continue to act consequentially in terms of EU integration. We are a European country, we have a right to benefit from European values.Tusk also said that the Polish presidency in late 2011 will work to see that post-Soviet countries are not forgotten in the EU's scramble to cope with crises in north Africa and the Middle East.Neither leader spoke of prospective dates for Moldova's EU entry.Leaving aside the small country's technical conformity with accession criteria, Western fears of a fresh influx of poor migrants and more general EU enlargement fatigue stand in Chisinau's way.The coming-to-power of Filat's pro-EU coalition government following a revolution in 2009 marks one of the EU's few foreign policy successes in the post-Soviet region however, amid backsliding on democratic standards in Belarus, Azerbaijan and Ukraine.

A former leader of an al Qaeda linked group in Libya claims that there are around 1000 fundamentalist Islamic fighters in the country that have joined the uprising against Col. Moammar Gaddafi’s forces, a number that jives with intelligence reports and independent estimates. Yet still the allied NATO forces are considering arming the rebels.Former jihadist Noman Benotman, who renounced his al Qaeda affiliation in 2000, said in an interview that he estimates 1,000 jihadists are in Libya, reports the Washington Times.Referring to the fighters as freelance jihadists, Benotman said that the men were part of a North African terror cell known as Al Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb (AQIM).Benotman told the Times that the fighters had attempted but so far failed to co-opt the Gaddafi government.He also noted that the fighters have not labeled themselves as leaders of the uprising, yet have rather infiltrated the Libyan opposition so as not to appear to be undermining the Libyan people.Benotman acknowledged that the jihadists were afraid to be seen imposing their wish to establish an Islamic republic in Libya, noting that the interim council leading Libya’s opposition is seeking democratic elections.Yesterday in testimony on Capitol Hill, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, Admiral James Stavridis, acknowledged the presence of such fundamentalists amongst Libyan rebel groups

WASHINGTON – The CIA has sent small teams of operatives into Libya after the agency's station in the capital was forced to close, and officers assisted in rescuing one of the two crew members of an F-15E Strike Eagle that crashed, an American official and a former U.S. intelligence officer told The Associated Press on Wednesday.The agency's precise role in Libya is unclear. Intelligence experts said the CIA would have sent officials to make contact with the opposition and assess the strength and needs of the rebel forces battling Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in the event President Barack Obama decided to arm them.The American official and the former U.S. intelligence officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information, said the CIA helped safely recover the fighter jet's weapons specialist, who was first picked up by rebels. The pilot was rescued by Marines.They suffered only minor injuries, the military has said. Officials have declined to say what mission the F-15 was on at the time of the crash March 21. The crew ejected after the aircraft malfunctioned during a mission against a Libyan missile site.

The former intelligence officer said some CIA officers also had been staging from the agency's station in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.The New York Times first reported the CIA had sent in groups of CIA operatives and that British operatives were directing airstrikes.Obama said in a national address Monday night that U.S. troops would not be used on the ground in Libya. The statement allowed for wiggle room as the president explores options in case he decides to use covert action to ship arms to the rebels and train them. That would require a presidential finding.In that event, the CIA would take the lead, as it has done in the past such as in Afghanistan after the Sept. 11 attacks and the run-up to the Iraq invasion in 2003. In those covert action programs, CIA officers along with special operation forces were sent in, providing arms to opposition forces to help fight the Taliban in Afghanistan and Saddam Hussein in Iraq.The White House said Wednesday it is assessing options for all types of assistance to the rebels.No decision has been made about providing arms to the opposition or to any groups in Libya, said White House press secretary Jay Carney. Two things may have escaped you -- this week marks the fifth anniversary of the debut of Twitter and we should be QR Code savvy.

By now even some of us who are dinosaurs know about Twitter and may even Tweet.But the QR Code -- short for Quick Response Code -- is the square pattern on a white background that is now showing up on merchandise and in advertising. It is embedded with information, much like a UPC or bar code. When read with a barcode scanner, the QR Code can launch websites, files, photos, videos and music.Although QR Codes have been around for 17 years, they are only now surfacing in more places because of the explosion of smartphones.Droids, iPhones, BlackBerries and others are equipped with apps to scan QR Codes and launch their information. Since smartphones now significantly outsell traditional cell phones, the QR Code, though not new, has far more utility than it did even a few months ago.These codes, which were introduced by a Toyota subsidiary in 1994, are commonplace in Japan and appear in magazines, billboards, business cards, windows, apparel and more. Even McDonalds uses the QR Code on the burger wrappers, directing consumers to a page with the burger’s nutritional information.

Why not horse racing, too?

Horse racing should look into how it could apply the latest technology and make it easier to research a horse and make wagers.Maybe those folks with dial phones and VCRs will not make the leap to the latest and greatest options, but the constant lament is that racing is not attracting young gamblers.Well, if we want the gamers to find their way to gambling, we need to be cutting edge. We need to be able to adapt our product -- not the racing itself but how we present the racing product and the data that supports it.Programs are basically passé. When you can use a QR Code or similar device to bring up the data and videos of past races, the smartphone, tablet (such as the iPad) or laptop becomes an unlimited source of information, formatted to suit the user.No need to fret over simplifying program lines -- that can be an option that the person holding the device may select.Choose to watch head-on stretch runs of previous races, and you can do so on your iPad.Prefer your past performance information in the form of a bar graph? That can be an option as well.

As much as we sometimes fear technology, it is time for horse racing to embrace it.
Maybe instead of tattooing an identifying number on our racehorses, we give each of them a QR Code.
