EU hails kickoff for new financial surveillance bodies
JAN 2,11
BRUSSELS (AFP) – The European Union hailed the 2011 kickoff this weekend of a series of new post-crisis pan-European watchdogs aimed at tightening regulation of the finance industry.Europe is learning from the crisis, said Michel Barnier, the European Commissioner for Internal Markets and Services. It is giving itself a new apparatus of surveillance and supervision -- to detect problems early and to act in time. The bodies include the Frankfurt-based European Systemic Risk Board and a trio of authorities for banks, insurance and stock, respectively based in London, Frankfurt and Paris. The role of the Frankfurt-based Board, to be headed initially by the European Central Bank chief, is to alert and make recommendations to European Union countries or supervisory authorities whenever it detects threats to financial stability, such as a housing or stock market bubble. The three other authorities will be able to propose Europe-wide technical standards, mediate between authorities of member states, temporarily ban or restrict trade in financial products, and urge national authorities to take measures if necessary. Those bodies are the European Banking Authority (EBA), the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA).The new surveillance structure, Barnier said in a statement, was the control tower and the radar screens that the financial sector needs. We are putting into effect in practical terms the lessons learnt from the crisis,he added.
Estonian cashpoints begin pumping out euro-notes-Tallinn skyline. This wasn't the glittering euro entrance you were promised Krugman said (Photo: Steve Jurvetson) ANDREW RETTMAN 01.01.2011 @ 15:17 CET
EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Cashpoints in Estonia began issuing euro banknotes at around 20 minutes past midnight local time on Saturday (1 January) in a development marking the fourth phase of expansion for the troubled single currency.Holding his clutch of banknotes outside a specially-installed cashpoint near a new year's eve gala venue, Prime Minister Andrus Ansip told press:It is a small step for the eurozone and a big step for Estonia ... We are proud to be a euro zone member state. For Estonia, the choice is to be inside the club, among the decision makers, or stay outside of the club. We prefer to act as club members.Eighty five million euro coins and 12 million banknotes went into circulation in Estonia on Saturday and money in bank accounts was automatically converted from the kroon to the euro at the stroke of midnight. People will be able to exchange kroons at Estonian high-street banks until the end of the year and at the Estonian Central Bank with no time limit. Meanwhile, Estonian Central Bank head Andres Lipstok will take part in his first meeting as a member of the European Central Bank's council on 13 January.Estonia is the first former Soviet republic to join the currency club. Launched in 2002 with 15 members, it welcomed former Communist country Slovenia in 2007, followed by Cyprus and Malta in 2008 and by Slovakia in 2009. Estonia is joining the currency area at a troubled time both for its own economy and for the euro itself, however.
Unemployment in the small country of 1.3 million people stands at 18 percent and its GDP has crashed in the past few years. In the wider euro-area, if Italy or Spain require a Greek or Irish-type bailout in 2011, the future of the single currency could be at risk.European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso and EU parliament head Jerzy Buzek, were unequivocally upbeat in their Estonia statements.Estonia's entry means that over 330 million Europeans now carry euro notes and coins in their pockets. It is a strong signal of the attraction and stability that the euro brings to Member States of the European Union, Mr Barroso said in a statement. The euro is a common good ... [it] is both a world currency and one of the pillars of the European Union,Mr Buzek noted.Nobel-winning US economist Paul Krugman wrote on his blog 40 minutes before the currency changeover, however: Congratulations to Estonia - but condolences too. This wasn't the glittering euro entrance you were promised. For her part, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in her New Year's address, noted the political importance of the single currency and voiced concern over what the new year will bring.Europe stands in these months in the middle of a great test, she said on national TV. The euro is much more than a currency ... A united Europe is the guarantor for our peace and freedom. The euro forms the foundation of our prosperity.

16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

Dichter: No Arab Return, Erekat Will Swallow his Words
by Maayana Miskin JAN 3,11
MK Avi Dichter, former Minister of Internal Security, spoke to Arutz Sheva's Hebrew-language news service Sunday regarding negotiations with the Palestinian Authority. The discussion focused on senior PA negotiator Saeb Erekat, who recently told the British daily The Guardian that Israel must recognize the Arab right of return if it wants peace.According to Erekat, the right of return should apply not only to Arabs who fled pre-state Israel during the War of Independence, but also to every one of their descendants, making a total of seven million people eligible to return to Israel. In Bosnia and in Palestine, the return of refugees has been considered absolutely necessary for the stability of peace,he said.
Erekat's remarks are unprecedented, but not overly worrisome, Dichter said. While PA leaders have often voiced demands for return in the Arab press, I don't remember [seeing] such extreme statements from such a senior figure,he said. However, he said, The right of return will not be included in the peace process... Talk about the right of return is meaningless. Everyone understands that there will not be a solution that includes return, no matter who says what.Erekat's statements were manipulative, and completely baseless, Dichter continued. Erekat will need to swallow his words, he said. He has taken back many things he said in the past, and he will have to take this back as well.
No Peace Without Gaza
Dichter warned of a systematic, organized fraud perpetrated by the PA regarding negotiations. Ever since the overthrow in Gaza, they've been drawing all attention to Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem, and ignoring Gaza completely,he said. The subject of Gaza is a central issue that must not be ignored – not by Israel, not by the United States, not by the Quartet, and not by the Arab nations, he continued. Gaza is an abscess that must be burst – either by the Arab nations bringing PA control back to Gaza, or by Israel toppling the terrorist infrastructure in a process that will last for years. We cannot continue to have an Iranian-directed terrorist identity between us and Egypt, he concluded.Israel must ensure that Gaza, and all other relevant issues, are dealt with under any peace deal, Dichter said. We cannot go step by step, it has to be one whole process... A peace deal is like delivering a child. One does not birth a partial baby, and similarly, one cannot birth a partial peace.

Hate Letter Threatened Wave of NY Synagogue Attacks
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu JAN 3,11
A hate letter threatened a wave of New York synagogue bombings on New Year’s Eve, including the Upper West Side house of worship, whose spiritual leader, Rabbi Alan Schwartz, told The New York Post, Someone wants to spread fear. His Ohab Zedek synagogue - a religious center for hundreds of New York professionals, many of them singles - received a letter Thursday afternoon, threatening to blow up the house of worship on the eve of the Jewish Sabbath Friday night, which also was the eve of the secular new year.Police evacuated the synagogue building and combed it for explosives, but found nothing suspicious.Rabbi Schwartz told the newspaper that the letter was also sent to 10 or 12 synagogues, although police have not confirmed if explicit bomb threats were made in every letter. The Post noted that the same day the letter was discovered, New York state officials released annual statistics showing that hate crimes rose by 14 percent, while hate crimes in New York City rose by 6 percent. Seventy incidents were recorded in Manhattan.(IsraelNationalNews.com
Female Reform Rabbis: Socialize With Arabs, But Don't Date
by Maayana Miskin JAN 2,11
Female Reform Jewish Rabba's [feminine for Rav, the term suggested for female Reform spiritual leaders in Israel, ed.] have written a letter criticizing a call from Orthodox rabbis' wives (rebbetzins) for Jewish women not to socialize with or date Arab men because of the possibility of this leading to marriage, which they see as a natural result of male-female friendships.. The Reform Rabba's only disagreed with the rebbetzins in part – while they believe Jewish women and Arab men should socialize, they remain opposed to their marrying one another..We... oppose interfaith marriages, but we consider professional and social contacts between us and all of Israel's citizens and residents to be positive – regardless of race, religion, or sex, the letter said. It was signed by 40 women serving as Reform spiritual leaders in Israel. The female Reform leaders seem to have seem themselves as parallel to the Orthodox rabbi's wives in writing an all-women's response. Male Reform rabbis said they also support the Reforms women's letter.
The rebbetzins' letter, sent last week, had called on young Jewish women to avoid professional or social contact with Arab men in order to avoid dating relationships. The women are likely to find that Arab men in the workplace will attempt to win their affection with gifts and compliments, only to mistreat them in any ensuing relationship and force them break off contact with their families, the letter said, citing many instances where this has occurred. They reminded young women that their grandparents or families came to live in the Jewish State in order to preserve Judaism. The rebbetzins cautioned that dating between Jewish women and Arab men often leads to situations in which Jewish women are left isolated and under the control of their Arab boyfriends or husbands, and are forced to abandon their Jewish identity.
The issue of interfaith marriage is anathema in Israel, where Jewish-Moslem intermarriage runs mainly one way – Muslim men attempt and succeed in marrying Jewish women, mostly from poorer segments of society, but Jewish men who attempt to date Muslim women face severe repercussions, including physical violence.Close to 100% of the children of mixed Jewish-Muslim marriages identify as Muslim as the women are not allowed contact with their former Jewish milieu. Many women who wish to be rescued from interfaith marriages that have turned out to be abusive have turned to Yad LeAchim, the organization that attempts to arrange their escapes from Arab villages. Many continue to suffer because they do not want to leave their children.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

7.1 magnitude quake off Chile coast: USGS
JAN 2,11
WASHINGTON (AFP) – A 7.1 magnitude earthquake was detected Sunday near the central coast of Chile, US authorities said, noting the risk of local -- but not Pacific-wide -- tsunamis. The US Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at 2020 GMT, 69 kilometers (45 miles) northwest of Temuco, Chile, at a depth of 16 kilometers (10 miles). The latest USGS report revised an earlier report giving the magnitude of the quake as 7.2, and the depth at 33 kilometers (20.5 miles), and describing the location as offshore from the Bio-bio region, which was devastated last year by a massive earthquake.Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin. However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter, it said.Chile lies on the Pacific rim of fire and is prone to violent earthquakes. In February last year it was hit by a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake, which triggered a huge tsunami sweeping away entire villages. The disaster left around 520 people dead, and caused an estimated 30 billion dollars in damage.

More than 1,000 dead birds fall from sky in Ark.
Sun Jan 2, 9:18 am ET
BEEBE, Ark. – Wildlife officials are trying to determine what caused more than 1,000 blackbirds to die and fall from the sky over an Arkansas town. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said Saturday that it began receiving reports about the dead birds about 11:30 p.m. the previous night. The birds fell over a 1-mile area of Beebe, and an aerial survey indicated that no other dead birds were found outside of that area.
Commission ornithologist Karen Rowe said the birds showed physical trauma, and she speculated that the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail. The commission said that New Year's Eve revelers shooting off fireworks in the area could have startled the birds from their roost and caused them to die from stress.
Robby King, a wildlife officer for the agency, collected about 65 dead birds, which will be sent for testing to the state Livestock and Poultry Commission lab and the National Wildlife Health Center lab in Madison, Wis.Rowe said that similar events have occurred elsewhere and that test results usually were inconclusive. She said she doubted the birds were poisoned.

1 week after blizzard, NYC garbage is piled high By KAREN MATTHEWS, Associated Press - JAN 2,11
NEW YORK – One week after a blizzard paralyzed the city, the snowdrifts were melting Sunday but the mountains of trash were growing. The Department of Sanitation announced it would resume garbage pickups on Monday for the first time since the Christmas weekend storm dumped 20 inches of snow on city streets. Trash collection was suspended while crews struggled to plow streets, Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty said.We are able to resume garbage pickups now that significant progress has been made in clearing away the aftermath of last Sunday's massive blizzard, Doherty said Saturday.Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other city officials endured days of withering criticism for the city's slow response to the storm. Bloomberg visited some of the neighborhoods hardest hit by the snow and confessed the city's handling of it was inadequate and unacceptable. On one Manhattan block Sunday, sanitation trucks with front loaders were busy clearing snow, but garbage bins outside apartment buildings were filled to overflowing, and bags of recyclable beer bottles and milk cartons were stacked helter-skelter along with discarded Christmas trees and wreaths.Neighborhood resident Daniella Lekach said she could smell the trash but it didn't bother her. It's OK in the winter, she said.I figure it's cold enough that the rodents and insects aren't going to gather. But Merilu Granato, who owns a midtown Manhattan pizzeria, called the piles of garbage a very ugly scene.
We pay so much in taxes,Granato said. We didn't expect whoever's in charge to be so behind. ... I've been here 30 years and never seen anything like it.The sanitation department said New Yorkers whose garbage is normally collected on Monday should place all their trash bags and containers out at curbside Sunday night. It said it had already started collecting garbage from some housing developments.Recyclables won't be collected until further notice, but Christmas trees will be picked up.
Alternate-side-of-the-street parking rules, suspended since the Dec. 26 storm to facilitate snow removal, will be suspended again on Monday.
Short respite but worst of Australian floods not over

BUNDABERG, Australia (AFP) – Emergency services in northeastern Australia geared up Monday to battle huge flooding that has left at least one person dead, amid warnings the worst of the devastation is far from over.Up to 200,000 people are estimated to have been hit by the fast-flowing waters which have left entire rural towns under water and cut off many more over a vast area the size of France and Germany combined.
But in a rare glimmer of good news, the bureau of meteorology in Queensland early Monday cancelled a severe thunderstorm warning, saying the immediate threat had passed. However, state assistant police commissioner Alistair Dawson has warned the emergency could drag on for another month and cautioned that major difficulties still lay ahead. It's hard to make the call that the worst is behind us, Dawson said on Sunday.Parts of the state are still in response mode while others are in recovery... I think we're in the middle of the event, he said. The floods, which are wreaking untold billions of dollars in damage to crops and Australia's key mining industry, claimed their first victim Sunday when the body of a missing woman was recovered. There are fears for another man missing after his fishing boat was swamped Saturday afternoon near Gladstone, at the centre of the floods, and witnesses reported seeing a second man swept away in the coastal town of Rockhampton.
The 41-year-old woman victim was swept from her car as she tried to cross a swamped causeway in the Gulf of Carpentaria region.Police managed to save three children and another adult from the car but the woman disappeared before they could reach her.
These waters are exceptionally fast, they're not to be trifled with and they're not to be taken lightly, Dawson said.Queensland State Treasurer Andrew Fraser has described the situation as a disaster of biblical proportions.Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who on Friday toured inundated regions, said the mining sector had been particularly badly hit, adding that farmers, small businesses and tourism would also suffer.Residents in Rockhampton were forced to flee the rising waters in darkness Saturday night, while helicopters delivered food and other supplies to about 22 centres hit by the deluge.Rockhampton's airport, a major regional hub, was closed to commercial traffic because the runways were under water while the deluge also cut main roads and railways into the town and disrupted power supplies.
The town's river is expected to peak at 9.4 metres (31 feet) Wednesday, threatening 2,000-4,000 homes, and Mayor Brad Carter said desperate sandbagging was under way.
Rockhampton could be isolated for up to 10 days, and though food shortages were not yet an issue, Carter said he was unsure how long supplies could last as the situation worsens. The water inundation is far more extensive than we thought it was. It's very extensive, Carter said after an aerial tour on Sunday. The geographic area has an enormous amount of water to it either side of ...the Fitzroy river, which has broken through its banks and is covering large agricultural areas, said Carter.
Officials were warning of a critical drinking water shortage at the inland town of Dalby after its treatment plant was swamped, meaning supplies had to be trucked in.
In Bundaberg, in Queensland's southeast, the clean-up was set to begin in about 300 homes and 120 businesses as flood waters recede, but other towns such as Theodore and Condamine remained empty of residents.
7th person dies after New Year's Eve tornadoes
By HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH, Associated Press – Sat Jan 1, 11:54 pm ET
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Shaken residents spent New Year's Day sifting through the wreckage wrought by tornadoes that touched down in several states on the last day of 2010, killing seven people and injuring dozens of others.Six people — three in Missouri and three in Arkansas — died Friday as tornadoes fueled by unusually warm air pummeled the South and Midwest. A seventh person who was injured Friday in Missouri died Saturday, said Bruce Southard, the chief of the Rolla Rural Fire Department. The woman, identified by Phelps County Emergency Management as 74-year-old Ethel Price, was entertaining a friend, Alice Cox, 69, of Belle, Mo., in her trailer when the twister hit.Southard said nothing was left of the trailer except for the frame, and that the twister scattered debris 40 to 50 yards from where the trailer was sitting. The women were found under a pile of debris, and Cox died Friday, Southard said. It's like you set a bomb off in it, Southard said. It just annihilated it.At a farm not far away, 21-year-old Megan Ross and her 64-year-old grandmother Loretta Anderson died when a tornado hit where their family lived among three mobile homes and two frame houses, Dent County Emergency Management Coordinator Brad Nash said.In Mississippi, the National Weather Service confirmed Saturday evening that three tornadoes ripped through the central part of the state on New Year's Eve, causing heavy damage and injuring three people. Officials say it damaged structures, blew out billboards, uprooted trees and overturned a tanker trailer. The cost of the storm wasn't immediately known, but it was expected to be steep. In Missouri, state officials received initial reports from nine counties that as many as 280 homes and other structures sustained damage and that at least 50 of them were destroyed.
Especially hard hit was Fort Leonard Wood, where about 30 homes were destroyed and about 65 others were in need of repair, and the St. Louis area, where more than 100 structures were damaged or destroyed, said Mike O'Connell, a spokesman for the Missouri Department of Public Safety. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said 39 homes and 40 businesses were destroyed or seriously damaged by the large storm system. About 6 inches of rain fell in places, leading to flash flooding. And emergency management officials in Arkansas say 14 homes and one business in Washington County sustained damage, while in Benton County, 13 homes and five businesses sustained damage.Missouri's governor, Jay Nixon, began the new year meeting with emergency workers, cleanup crews and residents in the heavily damaged St. Louis County town of Sunset Hills before heading to Rolla. It is destruction unlike anything I've seen, said Nixon spokesman Sam Murphey, who was part of the tour. It's incredible. Both Nixon and Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe declared states of emergency that could make it easier to eventually obtain federal funding to help with the cleanup effort. In the northwestern Arkansas hamlet of Cincinnati, volunteers from as far away as Ohio came to help after a twister packing winds up to 140 mph claimed three lives. Gerald Wilson, 88, and his wife, Mamie, 78, died in their home and Dick Murray, 78, was killed as he was milking cows.Washington County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Richard Green said residents in the town of about 100 people were doing as good as can be expected. This outpouring out of the community is helping a bunch.A shelter was open at the local United Methodist Church, where people could get warm, get some food and a hot drink and warm up, said Arthur Ashby, an emergency services specialist for the American Red Cross chapter in nearby Tontitown. They are tired ... but every person I've seen has had a positive attitude and is excited to get things going again and rebuild and clean up,Ashby said.
In Missouri, the Red Cross has been giving out hotel vouchers to displaced residents, and Fort Leonard Wood officials were finding places for displaced residents to stay. Major Gen. David Quantock, the fort commander, said it was a godsend that the storm resulted in only four minor injuries there. He said efforts were focused on getting families that had been displaced back to some level of normalcy.Emergency teams in Mississippi were also working Saturday to survey the damage. Forecasters at the National Weather Service's building at the Jackson airport had been forced into a tornado shelter when winds hit 60 miles per hour. It was pretty intense, said Ed Agre, a senior forecaster. The Clarion-Ledger newspaper in Jackson reported that the storm forced the evacuation of about 200 people from the Jackson-Evers International Airport, where a possible tornado was reported crossing a runway.Power was knocked out to about 20,000 customers, but by Saturday night, only about 1,500 remained without power. In Missouri, about 8,000 customers were left in the dark on New Year's Eve, but less than 1,000 were still without power by the next day.Associated Press writers Murray Evans in Oklahoma City and Cain Burdeau in New Orleans contributed to this report.

Copts protesting bombing clash with Egypt police
By Sarah Mikhail and Sherine El Madany - JAN 2,11
CAIRO (Reuters) – Angry Coptic Christians clashed with police on Sunday as they demanded more protection for Egypt's Christians following a New Year's Day church bombing that killed 21 of their brethren.Hundreds of members of Egypt's large Christian minority protested in Cairo and Alexandria, the northern city where the presumed suicide bomber detonated a device outside a church during a midnight service.A security source said Egypt was holding seven people for questioning over Saturday's bombing, which also wounded 97 people, and had released 10 others. At Saint Mark's Cathedral, the Cairo base of Orthodox Pope Shenouda, several hundred young Copts fought police on Sunday as they tried to leave the cathedral grounds and take to the streets to demand more protection for Christians.Their protest continued into the night, the crowd held back by a cordon of riot police nine men deep. A church official approached the crowd briefly to try to calm them down, without success.Security - are you with us or with them? the men cried. You government are cowards.Pope Shenouda, have a care. We are youth. We will protect you with our blood, the men shouted, many of them holding aloft makeshift wooden crosses. Revolution, revolution in Egypt, in all churches of Egypt.
Earlier, protestors in Cairo had heckled government officials who visited the cathedral compound to offer condolences: Where are you, Interior Minister, when they are killing our brothers before your eyes? Some protesters pelted a minister's car with stones when he left, witnesses said. Some visiting Christian officials had cars shaken by angry demonstrators, while other protesters scuffled with police outside the compound.Extra police officers were posted outside several churches in Cairo and Alexandria on Sunday, preventing cars from parking next to the buildings, witnesses said.Pope Benedict, head of the Roman Catholic church, condemned the bombing as a vile gesture, the latest in a series of attacks on Christians in the Middle East and Africa.Egyptian officials said there were indications that foreign elements were behind the blast and that it seemed to have been the work of a suicide bomber. An Iraqi group linked to al Qaeda threatened in November to attack Egypt's Coptic Church. And about two weeks before the bombing, a statement on an Islamist website urged Muslims to attack churches in Egypt and elsewhere around Christmas, which for Orthodox denominations such as the Copts falls on January 7.A statement on another Islamist website after the blast read: This is the first drop of heavy rain, hand over our prisoners and turn to Islam. No group was named.Islamist groups have accused the Church of trying to coerce Christian women who wanted to convert to Islam. One protester, Nader Shenouda, said: When there was a threat from al Qaeda a month or a month and a half ago, did the government have to wait till the disaster happened before protecting us? Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb, the head of al Azhar, Egypt's most prestigious seat of Sunni learning, visited the Muslim Orthodox Coptic Pope Shenouda to express condolences.
President Hosni Mubarak, 82, has pledged to track down the culprit. He made a televised address on Sunday calling for national unity, saying the attack was directed at all Egyptians, not just Christians. Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt's 79 million people. Tensions often flare with the majority Muslims over issues such as building churches or close relationships between members of the two faiths. Analysts said the attack was on a much bigger scale than typical sectarian flare-ups but said laws that make it easier to build a mosque than a church, and similar causes of Christian complaint, meant such an attack would fuel sectarian tension.Angus Blair, head of research at investment bank Beltone Financial, said the blast was likely to be brushed off by investors in the bourse and was not likely to have a material negative impact on tourism, a major revenue source.(Additional reporting by Yasmine Saleh, writing by Edmund Blair; editing by Jon Boyle)

Parshah Bo - Exodus 10:1-13:16
SINCE WHAT ISRAEL READS WILL BE FULFILLED IN THAT WEEK I WILL BE PUTTING THE WEEKLY TORAH PORTION ON FOR ALL OF US TO KEEP TRACK OF ISRAEL HAPPENINGS.
TORAH PORTION BO EXODUS 10:1-13:16
EXODUS 10:1 - 13:16
1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh: for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these my signs before him:
2 And that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son's son, what things I have wrought in Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that ye may know how that I am the LORD.
3 And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me.
4 Else, if thou refuse to let my people go, behold, to morrow will I bring the locusts into thy coast:
5 And they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remaineth unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field:
6 And they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians; which neither thy fathers, nor thy fathers' fathers have seen, since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day. And he turned himself, and went out from Pharaoh.
7 And Pharaoh's servants said unto him, How long shall this man be a snare unto us? let the men go, that they may serve the LORD their God: knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?
8 And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh: and he said unto them, Go, serve the LORD your God: but who are they that shall go?
9 And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the LORD.
10 And he said unto them, Let the LORD be so with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones: look to it; for evil is before you.
11 Not so: go now ye that are men, and serve the LORD; for that ye did desire. And they were driven out from Pharaoh's presence.
12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up upon the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail hath left.
13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts.
14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the coasts of Egypt: very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such.
15 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.
16 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste; and he said, I have sinned against the LORD your God, and against you.
17 Now therefore forgive, I pray thee, my sin only this once, and intreat the LORD your God, that he may take away from me this death only.
18 And he went out from Pharaoh, and intreated the LORD.
19 And the LORD turned a mighty strong west wind, which took away the locusts, and cast them into the Red sea; there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt.
20 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go.
21 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.
22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days:
23 They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
24 And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you.
25 And Moses said, Thou must give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God.
26 Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God; and we know not with what we must serve the LORD, until we come thither.
27 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go.
28 And Pharaoh said unto him, Get thee from me, take heed to thyself, see my face no more; for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die.
29 And Moses said, Thou hast spoken well, I will see thy face again no more.
EXODUS 11:1-10
1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence: when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether.
2 Speak now in the ears of the people, and let every man borrow of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold.
3 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants, and in the sight of the people.
4 And Moses said, Thus saith the LORD, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt:
5 And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.
6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.
7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.
8 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down themselves unto me, saying, Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee: and after that I will go out. And he went out from Pharaoh in a great anger.
9 And the LORD said unto Moses, Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you; that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.
10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh: and the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land.
EXODUS 12:1-51
1 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,
2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.
10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover.
12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.
16 And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.
17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.
18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even.
19 Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land.
20 Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread.
21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover.
22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.
23 For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.
24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.
25 And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service.
26 And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service?
27 That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD'S passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.
28 And the children of Israel went away, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.
29 And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.
30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.
31 And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as ye have said.
32 Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also.
33 And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men.
34 And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.
35 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment:
36 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.
37 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.
38 And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.
39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.
40 Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years.
41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.
42 It is a night to be much observed unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the LORD to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.
43 And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the passover: There shall no stranger eat thereof:
44 But every man's servant that is bought for money, when thou hast circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof.
45 A foreigner and an hired servant shall not eat thereof.
46 In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.
47 All the congregation of Israel shall keep it.
48 And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof.
49 One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you.
50 Thus did all the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.
51 And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.
EXODUS 13:1-16
1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2 Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.
3 And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.
4 This day came ye out in the month Abib.
5 And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month.
6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD.
7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.
8 And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.
9 And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD'S law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt.
10 Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year.
11 And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, as he sware unto thee and to thy fathers, and shall give it thee,
12 That thou shalt set apart unto the LORD all that openeth the matrix, and every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast; the males shall be the LORD'S.
13 And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among thy children shalt thou redeem.
14 And it shall be when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this? that thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage:
15 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that the LORD slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of beast: therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all that openeth the matrix, being males; but all the firstborn of my children I redeem.
16 And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt.
PROPHETS PORTION
JEREMIAH 46:13-28
13 The word that the LORD spake to Jeremiah the prophet, how Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt.
14 Declare ye in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Noph and in Tahpanhes: say ye, Stand fast, and prepare thee; for the sword shall devour round about thee.
15 Why are thy valiant men swept away? they stood not, because the LORD did drive them.
16 He made many to fall, yea, one fell upon another: and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our nativity, from the oppressing sword.
17 They did cry there, Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he hath passed the time appointed.
18 As I live, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts, Surely as Tabor is among the mountains, and as Carmel by the sea, so shall he come.
19 O thou daughter dwelling in Egypt, furnish thyself to go into captivity: for Noph shall be waste and desolate without an inhabitant.
20 Egypt is like a very fair heifer, but destruction cometh; it cometh out of the north.
21 Also her hired men are in the midst of her like fatted bullocks; for they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did not stand, because the day of their calamity was come upon them, and the time of their visitation.
22 The voice thereof shall go like a serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.
23 They shall cut down her forest, saith the LORD, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the grasshoppers, and are innumerable.
24 The daughter of Egypt shall be confounded; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.
25 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saith; Behold, I will punish the multitude of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods, and their kings; even Pharaoh, and all them that trust in him:
26 And I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants: and afterward it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, saith the LORD.
27 But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.
28 Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.

LUKE 2:22-24
22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
JOHN 19:31-37
31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
ACTS 13:16-17
16 Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience.
17 The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it.
REVELATION 8:6-9:12
6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.
8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.
12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!
1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.
8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.
9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
12 One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.
REVELATION 16:1-21
1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.
2 And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.
3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.
4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.
10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,
11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.
12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.
13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.
18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.
19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

NEW TESTAMENT PORTION
LUKE 2:22-24
22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;

UK cable in 1980 said Israel ready to use bomb
– Thu Dec 30, 12:59 pm ET
LONDON (Reuters) – A British ambassador to Israel warned as early as 1980 that Israel would detonate a nuclear bomb in case of a new war with the Arabs, according to previously secret state documents released on Thursday. If they (Israelis) are to be destroyed, they will go down fighting this time. They will be ready to use their atomic weapon, ambassador John Robinson wrote in a cable to the Foreign Office on May 4, 1980.Israel has never confirmed or denied having atom bombs under a policy of ambiguity to deter numerically superior foes.Robinson's message, published under a rule that allows official British papers to be released after 30 years, voiced concern that U.S.-hosted negotiations would not lead to a comprehensive agreement on the Middle East conflict. As long as there is no agreement on the West Bank and Jerusalem which satisfies the Palestinians, they will be driven increasingly to extremism; moderate governments in the area and Western interest will be increasingly threatened; opportunities for Soviet influence and intervention will increase; and so will the danger of a new war, the cable said. 19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.
EZEKIEL 7:19

EU ratchets up sanctions on Ivory Coast
LEIGH PHILLIPS 30.12.2010 @ 08:34 CET
European Union diplomats on Wednesday (29 December) agreed that member states would only recognise representatives of the Ivory Coast appointed by the widely acknowledged winner of the country's recent elections, Alassane Ouattara. The move aims to ratchet up pressure on incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo to step down.November presidential elections, already postponed since 2005, indicated a victory for Mr Ouattara of 54 percent of votes in a second round. However, the ruling social democratic Ivorian Popular Front of President Gbago contested the results and claimed to be a victim of electoral fraud.International observers rejected the claims and Mr Ouattara, a liberal and former International Monetary Fund economist, has been recognised as the victor by the EU, the UN, and the African Union. The Ivory Coast's membership of the AU has been suspended as a result of Mr Gbago's refusal to accept the results of the election.Ambassadors from the bloc's 27 states on Wednesday also approved an expansion of a list of Ivorians banned from travelling to the EU, including key supporters and government and military officials. The EU sanctions follow initial travel restrictions slapped on Mr Gbago and 18 members of his coterie agreed by European foreign ministers on 13 December.
The full travel ban list now totals 61 figures.
Additionally on Wednesday, Ivorian expatriates entered their country's embassy in the European capital and attempted to remove portraits of the incumbent leader. An asset freeze and support for the United Nation's existing peacekeeping force in the country were also discussed by EU diplomats.
Soldier Attacked at Entrance to Kiryat Arba
by Elad Benari DEC 31,10
An Israeli soldier was attacked and wounded by Arabs on Thursday evening at the entrance to Kiryat Arba.According to reports, the Arabs hit the soldier with various objects and threw a glass bottle at him, injuring him in the head. The assailants were arrested and turned over to the police for questioning.Following the incident, Kiryat Arba local council members Bentzi Gofshtein and Yisrael Bramson called on the IDF to close Tzir Tzion (Zion Road) to Arab traffic. Don’t force us, the residents, to close the road, they said.Tzir Tzion, the road leading from Kiryat Arba to Hevron, was reopened to Arab traffic last summer, upsetting Jewish residents of Hevron and Kiryat Arba who warned that opening the road will lead to murder. The opening of the road, as well as the removal of dozens of other checkpoints, was done as part of Israel’s good-will gestures to the Palestinian Authority.Earlier on Thursday, Arab terrorists opened fire towards the community of Horesh Yaron in Binyamin. No one was hurt. IDF soldiers were searching for the shooters.
Thursday’s incidents occurred after the Israel Security Agency released its annual report which said that there was an overall decrease in the number of terror attacks against Israel in 2010, compared to 2009.The report said that there were 798 recorded terror attacks by Arabs in 2010, down from about 1,354 in 2009. Nine people were murdered by terrorists in 2010, and none of the terror attacks were suicide bombings. The total number of shooting and explosive attacks in Judea and Samaria in 2010 was 32, just one less than the previous year.(IsraelNationalNews.com)
Chabad Rabbis Beef Up Jewish Presence in Debrecen
by Hana Levi Julian DEC 31,10
A delegation of Chassidic rabbis met this week with Hungarian President Pal Schmitt to talk about ways to fight anti-Semitism in the former Communist country. The Chabad-Lubavitch world movement, known for its international outreach to fellow Jews, is opening a new branch in the city of Debrecen as part of the effort to increase Jewish education and beef up Jewish identity. Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky of Lubavitch World Headquarters met with President Schmitt in an hour-long discussion together with a delegation from the local Jewish community. Here, Schmitt affirmed following the meeting, [Chabad] always has an open door.Kotlarsky was in the country to mark the appointment of an eighth team of emissaries to join seven others who already are working in the country, all of whom are based in Budapest. Rabbi Shmuel Feigin and his wife Rivkah, both Israelis, are slated to open the new branch in Debrecen, Hungary's second-largest city after Budapest.Home to approximately 4,000 Jews, Debrecen also plays host to some 1,000 Israeli students who attend the medical school there.Who would have thought that from the ashes of the Holocaust and the suppressive Communist regime, Jews would once more gather in the Obuda synagogue, he told Lubavitch.com. He described the reemergence of Jewish life in the country as a spiritual renaissance.
During World War II, the city was nearly leveled, with 70 percent of its buildings suffering damage, and at least half of them completely destroyed. After the war, Debrecen became the capital of Hungary for a short time as citizens began to rebuild, until the country was taken over by a Communist regime. The addition of Rabbi Feigin and his wife was announced at a special banquet held at the synagogue, the oldest standing Jewish house of worship in Hungary. The Obuda was recently renovated with a grant from the Rohr Family Foundation.(IsraelNationalNews.com)
STORMS HURRICANES-TORNADOES

25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;(MASS CONFUSION) the sea and the waves roaring;(FIERCE WINDS)

Massive storm blankets central US
– Thu Dec 30, 6:37 pm ET
CHICAGO (AFP) – A massive storm system blanketed the central United States on Thursday, whipping up blinding blizzards and dangerously frigid temperatures. The storm stretched from New Mexico to Minnesota and was expected to continue to dump heavy snow on the region on Friday and Saturday as it made its way slowly north into Canada. We're expecting almost a one-two punch across the middle part of the country over the next two days, said Bob Oravec, a forecaster with the National Weather Service (NWS).You might find localized areas that get as much as 18 inches (46 centimeters) of snow. The storm came as much of the northeast was still digging out from one of its worst blizzards in decades.Back to back storms are pretty typical for this time of year, said NWS forecaster Bob Oravec.Once the large scale pattern sets up you can be very stormy and have one after another, he told AFP.
White-out conditions led to a massive pile-up on a Fargo, North Dakota freeway involving about 100 vehicles, local media reported. At least two people were taken to hospital and rescue crews had trouble getting to all the cars and trucks because the road was such a mess of jumbled vehicles.Highways were closed across the eastern part of the state and officials warned people to stay off the roads whenever possible.Visibility is zero. Roads are glare ice, North Dakota Highway Patrol Sergeant Dave Wolf told The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead.If you have to stop quick, you're sliding.Highways in the Arizona mountains were also closed, but not before about 150 people got stranded and needed to be rescued, the Arizona Daily Sun reported.A sudden blizzard in southern New Mexico caused havoc on the roads as many people went home early ahead of the New Year's holiday weekend.Everything is really, really slick so we are discouraging people from traveling,Police Captain Terry Thortonberry told the Silver City Sun-News.
Storms dump heavy rain, snow on parts of West By FELICIA FONSECA, Associated Press - DEC 30,10
BELLEMONT, Ariz. – A winter storm pummeled the western U.S. on Thursday with fierce wind gusts, heavy rain and more than 2 feet of snow, closing hundreds of miles of roads and dumping a snowy mix of precipitation on the edges of Phoenix.Officials closed a road into Yosemite National Park in California after a rock the size of a dump truck tumbled onto the road, and strong winds created snow dunes on rooftops, front yards and streets across mountainous areas of Arizona.Snow and ice forced an hours-long closure of the two major thoroughfares in northern Arizona, stranding motorists south of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. People in Phoenix were stunned at the sight of snow-type flurries that the National Weather Service said were a combination of hail and snow that melts before it hits the ground.Drivers wanting to know how to get around the storms overwhelmed an Arizona hotline that provides automated updates on road conditions. State Department of Transportation spokesman Timothy Tait said the line took in 1.2 million calls in a 12-hour span Thursday.
Dorothy Brooks, of Dallas, was creeping along Interstate 40 at 20 mph on her way to Las Vegas, passing vehicles stuck on the side of the road, when she pulled into a Bellemont gas station to wait out the storm. It's devastating, she said, above the cry of a 9-month-old baby she was pushing through the aisles. You can't call Mother Nature anyway. You never know when she's going to burst out.The Silverton Mountain resort in Colorado reported 22 inches of snow, but only about 120 people were on the mountain because officials closed highways leading to the ski area for avalanche control and because of adverse conditions, resort co-founder Jen Brill said.R.A. Burrell, of Colorado Springs, left home around 3 a.m. to avoid getting stuck on the way to the extreme ski area and made it before the lift started running.I thought we'd really just come on a magical day, which is what it turned out to be,he said during a break from making turns. We just got lucky. The weather service said snow could fall at a rate close to an inch an hour starting Thursday evening in the Denver area, which usually has around 25 inches of snow by this time of the season but had just 1.5 inches so far.
United Airlines, the dominant carrier at Denver International Airport, canceled 32 United and United Express flights from Denver on Thursday, spokesman Rahsaan Johnson said.Major highways were also shut down in parts of New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Nevada.Forecasters said strong winds in California were expected to die down by early Friday, allowing a cold air mass to create frost and freeze problems in the region.Phoenix braced for freezing overnight temperatures as well, a rarity in the desert city. Inmates housed at the city's Tent City jail facility were being issued extra blankets and pink thermal underwear — part of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's odd method for punishing prisoners.Residents in the Phoenix area couldn't believe what they were seeing when white stuff starting falling from the sky. The wintry mixture of snow and hail had the appearance of snowflakes.Believe it or not, but I am looking out my window in Scotttsdale, Az & its SNOWING! Never thought I would see this! former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner tweeted.Southwestern New Mexico was being hit with blizzard conditions that were forecast to continue through midnight Thursday. Winds of up to 65 mph, heavy snow and rapidly falling temperatures made travel difficult if not impossible, forecasters said. The California Highway Patrol reported downed trees on various Los Angeles-area freeways and streets. One gust north of Los Angeles was clocked at 94 mph. Authorities in Kern County called off an evacuation of 120 homes after an irrigation canal overflowed with rain runoff. Fewer than six homes were damaged.
In the snow-laden Sierra Nevada, search teams found the body of a woman who disappeared while snowboarding at a Lake Tahoe-area resort, sheriff's Capt. Jeff Ausnow said. Shawnte Marie Willis, 25, became separated from friends Tuesday at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort, and bad weather had hindered the search. Icy roads led to a collision on U.S. 50 in Nevada, killing a 26-year-old woman whose car spun out of control and into the path of an oncoming Hummer, the Nevada Highway Patrol said. The Coast Guard called off a search after finding no sign of a 20-foot boat reported in trouble in rough seas off San Diego late Wednesday. A call picked up by a sea salvage company reported a man and three children aboard a boat taking on water. Eric Lamb, a captain at the company, said it may have been a hoax.A camping Boy Scout troop had to be rescued after a snowstorm stranded them near Pocatello, Idaho. The seven boys and three adults had planned to spend Tuesday night at Lariat Cave but were unable to get out, Power County Sheriff Jim Jeffries said. They called for help Wednesday morning and responders brought them out by snowmobile several hours later.Gordon Mason of Rockford, Ill., was taking it all in stride. The 62-year-old semi-truck driver was browsing through movies at a travel center in Arizona, grateful that something was open to occupy his time. The way the lot is, it's going to take a while to clear the trucks so the rest of us could get out, he said. I'm not even going to try until tomorrow.Managers at the travel center ensured their employees would be available to serve stranded motorists by renting hotel rooms for them next door.Contributing to this report were Associated Press writers Catherine Tsai in Denver, John Antczak and Robert Jablon in Los Angeles, Garance Burke in Fresno, Gillian Flaccus in Orange County, Haven Daley in Sonoma County and Sudhin Thanawala and Terry Collins in San Francisco.
Two dead, thousands evacuated in Philippines rains
– Wed Dec 29, 11:57 pm ET
LEGASPI (AFP) – Two people were killed and about 4,000 forced to flee their homes as monsoon rains brought flash floods and landslides to the region southeast of the Philippine capital, officials said Thursday. An 80-year-old woman and her 50-year-old son were swept away by rushing waters as they crossed a spillway to reach an evacuation centre late Wednesday, said Joey Salceda, governor of the affected province of Albay. We evacuated them early in the morning but apparently the old woman and her son returned home to get some personal belongings. Before twilight, they were returning to the evacuation centre and got stuck on the spillway, Salceda said.Heavy rain continued to fall on Albay and other parts of the Bicol region for the sixth straight day, increasing the danger of landslides and floods and forcing more people to be moved out of their homes, Salceda told AFP.The government had begun evacuating people from areas prone to flooding and landslides as early as December 24, he said. But more people will likely be moved as the weather bureau forecasts rain until January 2, the governor added. We are right now transferring a whole village -- 533 people -- to an evacuation site, Salceda said. Some villagers insist on returning to their houses to watch over their property or get personal items despite the danger, the governor said. The Albay government was preparing a New Year celebration for the evacuees, consisting of food and entertainment, to convince them not to leave evacuation centres, he said.
200,000 people affected by flooding in Australia
– DEC 30,10
BRISBANE, Australia – More than 200,000 people have been affected by relentless flooding in northeast Australia, with the flood zone now stretching over an area bigger than France and Germany combined, officials said Friday.Thousands of homes and businesses across Queensland state have been inundated with water after days of pounding rain caused swollen rivers to overflow. The entire population of two towns was forced to evacuate as water swamped their communities, cutting off roads and devastating crops.Northeastern Australia often sees heavy rains and flooding during the Southern Hemisphere summer, but the scope of the damage from the recent downpours is extremely unusual, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said. This is without a doubt a tragedy on an unprecedented scale, Bligh told Australian Broadcasting Corp. We now have 22 towns or cities that are either substantially flooded or isolated because the roads have been cut off to them. That represents some 200,000 people spanning an area that's bigger than the size of France and Germany combined.
Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes this week. In the central Queensland town of Emerald, around 1,000 people were evacuated in the last 24 hours.
The town was facing the prospect of food shortages, power outages and sewage-contaminated floodwaters, county mayor Peter Maguire said. Three evacuation centers have been set up to help displaced residents.Weather across most of the state was drier on Friday, but river levels were still rising in some areas.Bligh warned that drenched communities could be stuck under water for more than a week, and cleanup efforts were expected to cost billions of dollars.Rockhampton, a city near Queensland's coast, was bracing for a deluge of river water heading its way. Roads and railway lines were expected to be cut off by Saturday, and the city's airport planned to shut down over the weekend.Officials were evacuating residents on Friday, starting with the elderly and those living in low-lying areas. There were concerns over food supplies in the city, with many stores already sold out of bread, milk and fresh meat, Rockhampton Mayor Brad Carter said.Gary Boyer, regional manager of supermarket chain Woolworths, said the company was sending 43 trucks full of supplies into Rockhampton on Friday.
Queensland launched a disaster relief fund for flood victims with 1 million Australian dollars ($1 million) in state money. Prime Minister Julia Gillard pledged to match that amount with federal funds.Gillard was touring flooded communities on Friday, and planned to stop in Rockhampton later in the day.Earlier, she toured the city of Bundaberg, where about 60 people have taken shelter at an evacuation center.
Resident Sandy Kiddle told Gillard she lost cherished items after floodwaters surged through her house, and may not be able to return home for a week.It was just a sea of water and I thought the beach would never come to our house, she told Gillard, who gave her a hug.
Wall Street edges lower as year draws to a close
By Ryan Vlastelica - DEC 30,2010
NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. stocks closed slightly lower on Thursday as a trio of better-than-expected economic data wasn't enough to entice buyers to take on much risk in a market sitting on strong gains just before the new year. The S&P 500 is up 6.5 percent so far this month, putting it on track for the best December since 1991.
Reports on the labor market, business activity and housing all showed surprising strength.New U.S. claims for initial unemployment benefits in the latest week dropped to the lowest level since July 2008, while a report from the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago showed business activity in the U.S. Midwest rose to its highest level since July 1988. November pending home sales also rose more than anticipated. The numbers were very strong this morning, but people are becoming more cautious since it's the end of the year, especially since we've already had a great run, said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank in Cleveland, Ohio.Monster Worldwide Inc (MWW.N), an employment agency, rose 2.1 percent to $24.12 after the jobless data. The Dow Jones U.S. business training and employment agencies index (.DJUSBE) rose 0.3 percent. In a sign of investor anticipation of increased merger activity, Anadarko Petroleum Corp (APC.N) jumped 6.9 percent to $75.59 after the UK's Daily Mail reported BHP Billiton Ltd (BHP.AX) (BHP.N) may be lining up a $90 per share offer for the company. The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was down 15.67 points, or 0.14 percent, at 11,569.71. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) was down 1.86 points, or 0.15 percent, at 1,257.92. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was down 3.95 points, or 0.15 percent, at 2,662.98.
Technical indicators such as the S&P 500's relative strength index and elevated levels of bullishness are leading some investors to call for a pullback.Though many predict stocks will pull back in January, Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Equity Markets in Jersey City, New Jersey, does not see that happening until February. The common sense of the street is that we get pullback after this Santa Claus rally and a very strong run-up in the S&P since August, he said. But I don't think it will be in early January because everybody is expecting it.The S&P is up more than 14 percent since August, contributing to a reluctance to make large bets as light volume leaves the market more susceptible to volatility.February crude futures fell 1.9 percent to $89.35 per barrel after the latest U.S. inventory data, though the drop had little impact on energy companies.(Editing by Leslie Adler)
Dollar share of world reserves slips, total rises
– Thu Dec 30, 11:05 am ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) – The dollar's share of known global currency reserves slipped in the third quarter, while total central bank holdings hit a record $9 trillion, International Monetary Fund data showed on Thursday.Between July and September, the U.S. dollar's share of the roughly $5 trillion of world reserves of which the composition is known fell to 61.3 percent from 62.1 percent in the prior quarter.
Overall reserve accumulation rose for a sixth straight quarter, soaring to a record $9 trillion as of September 30. The composition of roughly $3 trillion of that is unknown but thought to be heavily concentrated in U.S. dollars. The euro saw a modest boost in its share of known reserves to 26.9 percent from 26.5 percent and the yen's share rose to 3.6 percent from 3.3 percent.Central banks have long been underweight the yen in their reserve portfolios. The share of other currencies, which excludes the dollar, euro, yen, sterling and Swiss franc, rose to 4 percent from 3.8 percent in the second quarter of 2010.Interest has grown in currencies such as the Australian and Canadian dollars, which have risen in value this year along with commodity prices, and some central banks have talked of increasing allocation to these currencies as well as the yen.In the third quarter of 2009, the share of other currencies in known global reserves stood at 2.9 percent.Valuation effects were also responsible for some of the allocation shift; the U.S. dollar lost more than 11 percent against the euro and about 5.5 percent against the yen in the third quarter of this year.Worries about a euro-zone sovereign debt crisis eased in the third quarter, resurfacing only in November, while falling U.S. bond yields pushed the dollar down against the yen.(Editing by Padraic Cassidy)

Researchers: Ancient human remains found in Israel By DANIEL ESTRIN, Associated Press – Mon Dec 27, 6:13 pm ET
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101227/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_israel_ancient_teeth (PICT)
JERUSALEM – Israeli archaeologists said Monday they may have found the earliest evidence yet for the existence of modern man, and if so, it could upset theories of the origin of humans.A Tel Aviv University team excavating a cave in central Israel said teeth found in the cave are about 400,000 years old and resemble those of other remains of modern man, known scientifically as Homo sapiens, found in Israel. The earliest Homo sapiens remains found until now are half as old. It's very exciting to come to this conclusion, said archaeologist Avi Gopher, whose team examined the teeth with X-rays and CT scans and dated them according to the layers of earth where they were found. He stressed that further research is needed to solidify the claim. If it does, he says, this changes the whole picture of evolution. The accepted scientific theory is that Homo sapiens originated in Africa and migrated out of the continent. Gopher said if the remains are definitively linked to modern human's ancestors, it could mean that modern man in fact originated in what is now Israel.
Sir Paul Mellars, a prehistory expert at Cambridge University, said the study is reputable, and the find is important because remains from that critical time period are scarce, but it is premature to say the remains are human.Based on the evidence they've cited, it's a very tenuous and frankly rather remote possibility, Mellars said. He said the remains are more likely related to modern man's ancient relatives, the Neanderthals.According to today's accepted scientific theories, modern humans and Neanderthals stemmed from a common ancestor who lived in Africa about 700,000 years ago. One group of descendants migrated to Europe and developed into Neanderthals, later becoming extinct. Another group stayed in Africa and evolved into Homo sapiens — modern humans.Teeth are often unreliable indicators of origin, and analyses of skull remains would more definitively identify the species found in the Israeli cave, Mellars said.Gopher, the Israeli archaeologist, said he is confident his team will find skulls and bones as they continue their dig.The prehistoric Qesem cave was discovered in 2000, and excavations began in 2004. Researchers Gopher, Ran Barkai and Israel Hershkowitz published their study in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.
Russia accuses West of meddling in Khodorkovsky trial By Alexei Anishchuk and Maria Tsvetkova - DEC 28,10
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia accused the United States and Europe on Tuesday of trying to influence the trial of jailed former tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, calling such efforts unacceptable and warning the West to mind its own business.Moscow's angry message came as Khodorkovsky, whose imprisonment has been a bone of contention between Russia and the West for years, awaited a new sentence that could keep him in jail until 2017 after being found guilty of theft.Prosecutors are seeking an additional six-year prison term for Khodorkovsky, the former Yukos oil company CEO who is 10 months from the end of an eight-year sentence imposed after a previous trial during Vladimir Putin's presidency.Attempts to apply pressure on the court are unacceptable, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, responding to U.S. and EU criticism aired on Monday after Khodorkovsky was found guilty of multi-billion-dollar theft and money laundering. We are counting on everyone to mind his own business -- both at home and in the international arena, it said.In the second trial, prosecutors said Khodorkovsky stole $27 billion in oil from Yukos subsidiaries through pricing schemes and laundered some of the money, charges he called absurd.Western officials said the guilty verdict raised doubts about the Kremlin's commitment to the rule of law and human rights, and warned they were closely watching the case. The Russian ministry said the trial was a matter for Russia's courts and rejected U.S. suggestions that the verdict resulted from selective justice as groundless. The warning suggested the outcome of Khodorkovsky's second trial could cause friction with Europe and strain the reset that has improved ties between the United States and Russia. It echoed accusations of Western meddling during Putin's 2000-2008 presidency, when Russia bristled at frequent U.S. and EU criticism.Trial judge Viktor Danilkin edged toward sentencing Khodorkovsky, who has been in jail since 2003, plowing through a lengthy guilty verdict against the tycoon and his business partner Platon Lebedev.Danilkin is expected to hand down the sentence sometime this week when he finishes reading out the verdict.Khodorkovsky's defense team has alleged government pressure on the judge and vowed to appeal. One of the young tycoons who built fortunes after the Soviet Union's 1991 collapse, Khodorkovsky fell out with Putin's Kremlin after airing corruption allegations, challenging state control over oil exports and funding opposition parties.Putin is now prime minister but remains Russia's most powerful man. His successor, Dmitry Medvedev, has made freeing Russia's courts of political influence and corruption, along with modernizing the economy, two of the top goals of his presidency.Police blocked the streets within 100 meters of Moscow's Khamovnichesky court on Tuesday, a day after hundreds of protesters gathered outside, calling for Khodorkovsky's release and shouting Shame!. Police detained about 30 demonstrators.A harsh sentence in Khodorkovsky's second trial would draw further criticism of Medvedev, the protege Putin steered into the presidency in 2008 when he ran up against a constitutional limit of two straight Kremlin terms.
MEDVEDEV'S AGENDA
Medvedev has courted U.S. and EU support for modernization, putting on a more pleasant face than Putin often showed to foreign powers in his presidency and traveling to California's Silicon Valley in search of ideas for innovation. He signed a major nuclear arms limitation treaty with President Barack Obama in April, the centerpiece of a drive to improve ties between the Cold War foes.Reacting on Monday to a verdict she said raised serious concerns about the rule of law being overshadowed by political considerations, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said independent courts were necessary for modernization. We welcome President Medvedev's modernization plans, but their fulfillment requires the development of a climate where due process and judicial independence are respected,Clinton said. The EU expressed concern, and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle called the developments highly alarming and a step backward for the country on its road toward modernization.Medvedev is struggling to show significant results on his reform initiatives as a 2012 presidential election approaches.Putin has said he and Medvedev will decide together on a Kremlin candidate for the vote, but many Russians believe Putin will ultimately make the choice. The two leaders set conflicting tones in the days before the verdict's delivery, with Putin telling the nation Khodorkovsky had blood on his hands and Medvedev stressing that no official should comment in advance of the verdict. After Khodorkovsky's 2003 arrest, Yukos was bankrupted by back-tax claims and its top assets sold to the state, deepening Western concerns over property rights and the rule of law.(Additional reporting by Gleb Bryanski and Alissa de Carbonnel; writing by Steve Gutterman; editing by David Stamp)
Iran says West hostility jeopardizes nuclear talks
– Tue Dec 28, 5:52 am ET
TEHRAN, Iran – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday that the West's hostile policies could harm further talks over the country's disputed nuclear program. The warning delivered in a speech at the northern Iranian city of Karaj came as Iran and the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, as well as Germany, are set to engage in another round of talks in Istanbul in late January. If you take an action that is a continuation of the previous path, this will make the job difficult. It will close the road (to dialogue), he said in the live TV broadcast. Cooperation benefits all. We do not expect them to take actions that are hostile. The U.N. Security Council imposed a fourth and tougher round of sanctions on Iran in June after Tehran refused to halt its disputed nuclear program.Ahmadinejad, however, asserted during the speech that sanctions have only strengthened Iran.Iran held a first round of talks with officials from the U.S., China, Russia, France, Britain, Germany and the European Union in Geneva earlier this month. The U.S. and its allies suspect Iran is pursuing weapons under cover of its nuclear program. Iran denies the charge.
Abbas Fatah faction bans former leader from meetings

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) – The Western-backed Palestinian Fatah faction has banned from meetings a former leader, once considered a possible successor to President Mahmoud Abbas, an official news agency reported Tuesday.Mohammed Dahlan, for years Fatah's strong-man in the Gaza Strip, was banned from attending faction meetings, the WAFA news agency reported, saying only that he was being investigated by the group's highest decision-making body.Dahlan first fell from grace in 2007 when Hamas Islamists routed Fatah forces to take control of the Gaza Strip. As security chief, Dahlan had been charged with keeping Fatah dominant in the coastal territory.A senior Fatah official said the investigation revolves around Dahlan's financial assets and accusations of incitement against Abbas.Palestinian officials, speaking anonymously, have said Dahlan had publicly spoken poorly of Abbas's sons and had criticized the Palestinian president, going as far as to call for his replacement.Dahlan, who could not be reached for comment, was also ousted from his position of commissioner of Fatah media and is being replaced by a long-standing Abbas spokesman.Prior to the ban, Abbas had ordered security guards to be removed from Dahlan's office and house in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Since then, Dahlan has spent more time abroad.(Writing by Mohammed Assadi; Editing by Louise Ireland)

Radical Nigerian Muslim group claims attacks By AHMED MOHAMMED, Associated Press - DEC 28,10
JOS, Nigeria – A radical Muslim sect has claimed responsibility for the Christmas Eve bombings and church attacks in Nigeria that killed at least 38 people, and the group threatened new attacks to avenge local violence against Muslims.Religious fighting has left more than 500 people dead this year in the deeply divided region where Jos is located. Authorities had already blamed the Boko Haram group for some of the deaths Friday, but the online statement attributed to the group was the first solid connection between the violence in two cities. Therefore we will continue with our attacks on disbelievers and their allies and all those who help them, the statement said.It was not immediately possible to contact members of the sect, which had not previously used the website where the statement appeared. The head of national police Yemi Ajayi also said Tuesday that authorities were still investigating.
Two bombs went off near a large market in Jos where people were doing last-minute Christmas shopping Friday. A third hit a mainly Christian area of Jos, while the fourth was near a road that leads to the city's main mosque.Officials initially said at least 32 died from the blasts, and police have not updated that figure publicly.
An official with the National Emergency Management Agency told journalists that he had counted 80 deaths, but the regional NEMA coordinator said only three hospitals were visited. It was not verified whether the patients counted were in fact blast victims, said the regional NEMA coordinator, Alhassan Aliyu Danjuma. That same day, two churches were attacked in the northern city of Maiduguri about 320 miles (520 kilometers) away, killing at least six people. Nigerian authorities blamed Boko Haram, and said a Baptist pastor and two choir members preparing for a late-night carol service were among the victims. The radical Muslim sect is also known by a much longer Arabic name, which means the organization of followers of the teachings of Prophet Muhammad and champions of Islam and holy wars.It was thought to be vanquished in 2009 after Nigeria's military crushed its mosque into concrete shards, and its leader was arrested and died in police custody. But now, a year later, Maiduguri and surrounding villages again live in fear of the group, whose members have assassinated police and local leaders and engineered a massive prison break, officials say. Western diplomats worry that the sect is catching the attention of al-Qaida's North Africa branch.
While religious violence in the central city of Jos and neighboring towns and villages has claimed more than 500 lives this year, the fighting has not typically been linked to Boko Haram.Nigeria, a country of 150 million people, is almost evenly split between Muslims in the north and the predominantly Christian south. Jos is in the nation's middle belt, where dozens of ethnic groups vie for control of fertile lands. The Jos violence, though fractured across religious lines, often has more to do with local politics, economics and rights to grazing lands. The government of Plateau state, where Jos is the capital, is controlled by Christian politicians who have blocked Muslims from being legally recognized as citizens. That has locked many out of prized government jobs in a region where the tourism industry and tin mining have collapsed in the last decades.Associated Press Writer Njadvara Musa contributed from Maiduguri, Nigeria.

Floods force evacuations in eastern Australia
by Madeleine Coorey – Tue Dec 28, 5:53 am ET
SYDNEY (AFP) – Military helicopters were called in Tuesday to help evacuate hundreds of Australians stranded by rising floodwaters, as entire towns were inundated by the worst deluges in parts of the region in decades.Torrential rains following in the wake of tropical cyclone Tasha, which last week crossed into the northeastern state of Queensland before quickly fading, have swollen rivers and flooded scores of farms and homes in the state. Some towns saw their worst floods in 50 years, including Theodore some 400 kilometres (250 miles) northwest of Brisbane, which has been cut off for two days and whose 350 residents were being evacuated by helicopter.Local Banana Shire Council Mayor Maureen Clancy said the town was just a sea of water, telling Australian news agency AAP that floodwaters had even reached its evacuation centre.Following a request from Queensland, the government is providing two Blackhawk helicopters to assist in the evacuation of Theodore, Prime Minister Julia Gillard said in a statement.Australian Defence Force personnel are on stand-by to offer further support if required.By early afternoon, the Dawson River at Theodore was at 14.59 metres (48 feet) and rising -- way beyond the town's 1956 record of 14.07 metres -- and most of the town under water.
As many as 1,000 people have been forced from their homes by the waters, which has affected large parts of central and southern Queensland, with more than 100 homes and businesses inundated.Officials said while the rain was abating in some places, a vast amount of water upstream was yet to flow through the towns as it made its way to the sea. There's an enormous amount of water still coming and I think that's the problem, the unknown we've got to face, Western Downs Mayor Ray Brown told ABC Radio after touring affected communities by air.The Queensland government has declared several areas, including Theodore, Chinchilla and Dalby, disaster zones -- a move that gives police the power to force people from their homes if necessary. We are facing a really significant event here right across many parts of Queensland -- a lot of flooding, a lot of people isolated, a lot of evacuations now occurring and a lot more rain to come, Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said. The floods are estimated to have cost grain farmers more than 400 million US dollars, while the crisis has closed hundreds of roads, shutting down parts of major highways. The government said that it would provide assistance to communities affected by the flooding, helping restore essential infrastructure such as roads, bridges and schools. While conditions across much of Queensland have eased, the threat from floodwaters remains in many areas, Gillard said, adding that while authorities had evacuated some people, other communities remained stranded.
Police have warned residents not to attempt to drive through waterlogged roads, after they were forced to rescue several people from vehicles -- including two adults and two toddlers who were forced to cling to trees after their car was swept away. They also arrested three teenagers after they attempted to use inflatable mattresses in a foolish and dangerous attempt to ride floodwaters for 30 kilometres to get to Brisbane on Monday. It's tomfoolery ... people on li-los (inflatable mattresses) floating down rivers, it's madness, we implore people to stop the silliness, assistant police commissioner Brett Pointing said.
Almost Everything Is A Crime In America Now: 14 Of The Most Ridiculous Things That Americans Are Being Arrested For The Economic Collapse December 28, 2010
Either we have a massive crime problem or the control grid that our leaders have erected for us is wildly out of control.Doesn’t it seem like almost everything is becoming a crime in America now? Americans are being arrested and charged with crimes for doing things like leaving dog poop on the ground, opening up Christmas presents early, not recycling properly, farting in class and having brown lawns. But is it healthy for our society for the police to be involved in such silly things? Every single day the United States inches closer to becoming a totalitarian society. While there are some that would welcome this shift, the truth is that throughout history the societies that have experienced the greatest economic prosperity have all had at least a certain level of freedom. Business thrives when people feel free to live and work. When a government tightens the grip too much many people just start shutting down. Just look at places like North Korea. Even though the rest of the world is sending them huge amounts of food starvation is still quite common in that totalitarian regime. That is why it is so disturbing that it seems like almost everything has become a crime in America now. As we continue to criminalize relatively normal behavior our slide toward becoming a totalitarian state will only accelerate. We are throwing anyone and everyone in prison these days. It is getting absolutely ridiculous. Today, the United States leads the world in the number of prisoners and in the percentage of the population in prison. The United States has 5% of the world’s population, but approximately 25%of the world’s incarcerated population.According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, as of the end of 2009 a total of 7,225,800 people were either on probation, in prison or on parole in America. That is a sign of a very, very sick society. Either we have a massive crime problem or the control grid that our leaders have erected for us is wildly out of control.
Or both.
But how in the world are we supposed to have a healthy economy if our entire nation is being turned into one gigantic prison? Sadly, it is not just hardcore criminals that are being rounded up and abused by authorities these days. The following are 14 of the most ridiculous things that Americans are being arrested for….
#1 A Michigan man has been charged with a felony and could face up to 5 years in prison for reading his wife’s email.
#2 A 49-year-old Queens woman had bruises all over her body after she was handcuffed, arrested and brutally beaten by NYPD officers. So what was her offense? The officers thought that her little dog had left some poop that she didn’t clean up.
#3 A 56-year-old woman who was once a rape victim refused to let airport security officials feel her breasts so she was thrown to the floor, put in handcuffs and arrested.
#4 In Milwaukee, one man was recently fined $500 for swearing on a public bus.
#5 Several years ago a 12-year-old boy in South Carolina was actually arrested by police for opening up a Christmas present early against his family’s wishes.
#6 In some areas of the country, it is now a crime to not recycle properly. For example, the city of Cleveland has announced plans to sort through trash cans to ensure that people are actually recycling according to city guidelines.
#7 A 12-year-old girl from Queens was arrested earlier this year and taken out of her school in handcuffs for writing Lex was here. 2/1/10 and I love my friends Abby and Faith on her desk.
#8 Back in 2008, a 13-year-old boy in Florida was actually arrested by police for farting in class.
#9 The feds recently raided an Amish farmer at 5 AM in the morning because they claimed that he was was engaged in the interstate sale of raw milk in violation of federal law.
#10 A few years ago a 10-year-old girl was arrested and charged with a felony for bringing a small steak knife to school. It turns out that all she wanted to do was to cut up her lunch so that she could eat it.
#11 On June 18th, two Christians decided that they would peacefully pass out copies of the gospel of John on a public sidewalk outside a public Islamic festival in Dearborn, Michigan and within three minutes 8 policemen surrounded them and placed them under arrest.
#12 A U.S. District Court judge slapped a 5oo dollar fine on Massachusetts fisherman Robert J. Eldridge for untangling a giant whale from his nets and setting it free. So what was his crime? Well, according to the court, Eldridge was supposed to call state authorities and wait for them do it.
#13 Once upon a time, a food fight in the cafeteria may have gotten you a detention. Now it may get you locked up. About a year ago, 25 students between the ages of 11 and 15 at a school in Chicago were taken into custody by police for being involved in a huge food fight in the school cafeteria.
#14 A few years ago a 70 year old grandmother was actually put in handcuffs and hauled off to jail for having a brown lawn.
Why in the world would anyone approve of the police arresting ordinary Americans for such things? It seems like ever since 9/11 the whole country has gotten security fever.Suddenly we need to get tough on everyone.Yes, crime is making a comeback, but once upon a time the police in this country were able to handle crime quite well and be courteous and helpful to ordinary citizens at the same time. But today it seems like nearly every single encounter with police ends up being negative.
It does not have to be that way.
The rest of the world sees what is going on in this country and many of them are deciding that they simply do not want to spend their tourist dollars here anymore. That is not a good thing for our economy. As the government continues to get even bigger and exerts even more control over our lives, many of our own people are getting sick of it and are moving abroad.America used to be the land of the free and the home of the brave.
That is no longer true.
Now we get thrown to the floor, handcuffed, beaten and arrested for things that we did not even know were crimes. If America continues to move in this direction it is going to ruin our economy, our reputation in the world and our national spirit.
Unfortunately, history has shown us that once a free nation starts to lose that freedom it is hard to reverse that slide. Perhaps we will be different. Perhaps the American people will stand up and demand that we restore the principles of liberty and freedom that this country was founded on.

- DEC 28,10
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
MATTHEW 5:10-12
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
MATTHEW 24:9
9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
JOHN 15:18-20
18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me (JESUS) before it hated you.
19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
REVELATION 6:9-11
9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain(BEHEADED) for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
REVELATION 20:4
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
