Seven killed in massive US floods
Published on: Friday, 30th June, 2006

Flooding killed at least seven people and forced hundreds of thousands across northeastern United States to evacuate yesterday in what the New York governor called the area’s worst natural disaster of a lifetime. Emergency officials from across the coast said the toll could climb to 11 or higher as other deaths recorded during the flooding are evaluated to see whether they had been caused by the storms. In one of the hardest hit areas in eastern Pennsylvania, county officials ordered the evacuation of up to 200,000 people from low-lying areas around the Susquehanna River amid fears that the river would spill over the dykes as waters crest.

Evacuation efforts stretched from Virginia - which declared a state-wide emergency to New York as up to a foot (40 centimetres) of rain fell through parts of the region and forced residents to rooftops in scenes reminiscent of last year’s Katrina disaster. We were afraid of a New Orleans-type situation where we just couldn’t get people out, said Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell said. A state of emergency was declared in 46 Pennsylvania counties and Rendell said helicopters had already been brought in to fly search and rescue missions, plucking stranded residents from their rooftops.

Floods in Indonesia's Borneo kill two, force 40,000 to flee

JAKARTA (AFP) - Floods triggered by heavy rains in the Indonesian portion of Borneo island have forced at least 40,000 people to flee their homes and killed at least two people, an official said. Some 40,000 people... in Banjar district have left their homes for safer ground after the waters of the Martapura and Riam Kiwa rivers began flooding,Hadi Susilo, from South Kalimantan's disaster control office, told AFP.Downpours to the north of South Kalimantan province had swollen the rivers drastically from Wednesday morning and flooded most of the district, with some areas under more than two metres (yards) of water, he said.

About 3,000 of the evacuees feared that a local dam would burst its banks, Susilo said.Besides the number of people who left their homes, what is making it more difficult to handle is that this is happening at the same time in so many places across the district, Susilo said.Floods had also hit some areas in Tanah Bumbu district but as the waters were not too deep, mass evacuations had not occurred, he said. Two people swept away by floods in the district's Setui area however were found dead, he said.Widespread floods and landslides hit the Kotabaru district of South Kalimantan earlier in the week, cutting off roads and bridges.

Heavy tropical rains have also lashed regions on the island of Sulawesi this month. In South Sulawesi, flash floods and landslides killed more than 200 people and left some 13,000 people homeless.

ZECHARIAH 14:1-4
1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

Rock of our existence, at a scale of 1:50
By Esther Zandberg

The model of Jerusalem during the Second Temple period, built during the 1960s at the capital's Holyland Hotel, was never just another nice, innocent tourist attraction, as it should have been. The Second Temple model presents Jerusalem in its glory days, during the rule of King Herod in 66 C.E., and the Herodian architecture in all its imaginary splendor. Despite - or perhaps because of the lack of scientific credibility, it has become fraught with political and national significance.

Some have viewed the model, which depicts the Second Temple on the site where the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock now stand, as proof of the Jews claim to exclusivity over Jerusalem. To others, it served as a pilgrimage site, an alternative to the Old City and the Western Wall before the 1967 war. A poster for an organization working to build the third temple features a photograph of the miniature shrine superimposed on a contemporary image of the city. On the other hand, the model is also fertile ground for learned critical theories.

The model's move to the Israel Museum the dedication is next Wednesday, July 5 signifies an additional rise in status for the model. After decades of being displayed in a commercial, tourist environment, it is now being installed in an artistic, museum environment, very close to the Shrine of the Book, where finds of a much higher archaeological quality are displayed. The Second Temple model will undoubtedly gain importance as a result. The signs point to an elevation to holy status, the rock of our existence at a scale of 1:50.

The model's new site is at the southern edge of the sculpture garden. If one can believe museum director James Snyder, It was as if the hand of God wanted the site to remain empty for the model. The museum did not settle for a neutral installation, but rather created an authentic background for the model, using archaeological and landscaping techniques to enhance its believability.

Jerusalem syndrome

The site is designed to resemble an archaeological excavation quarried out of rock and surrounded by steep support walls of natural stone. The model seems to grow naturally out of the rough rock. The topography simulates that of the Old City and its genuine vantage points. Snyder relates that a religious man told him, with great emotion, that one could look directly at the miniaturized holy of holies, just like from the Mount of Olives.

The model is an important part of a plan for developing the area of the Shrine of the Book (Design: Nahum Meltzer-Guy Igra Architects and Avner Drori Architects), which will be dedicated along with the model. This is the most significant project to be built at the museum in recent years. This includes the study center, with materials relating to the Dead Sea Scrolls and Dead Sea sects in the Second Temple Period. A less ambitious plan, for a visitors' center, was modified to suit the site of the model.

An overpass and a tunnel connect the various levels of the site to the visitors' center and the Shrine of the Book to create a historical harmony among the exhibits, as Snyder points out. The new construction does not extend above the museum's horizon line, thanks to the topography and differences in the structures heights. But even the hand of God could not hide the disturbing architectural dissonance between the new project and the existing museum.

The new project suffers from the architectural version of the Jerusalem syndrome that has consumed significant portions of the city. Its most obvious symptoms are a heavy, complicated style that smacks of overdone archaism and vast expanses of chiseled stone that are completely divorced from the museum's modern, secular, elegant atmosphere. Even the model itself is almost lost in the crowd. This project would never have passed muster with Herod: Cruel as he was, he knew what architectural excellence was.

The Israel Museum is currently promoting a comprehensive renovation and expansion program for the campus, which was originally designed by Alfred Mansfeld and Dora Gad. The pair won the Israel Prize for architecture for their efforts. Great care and effort is being taken to bring their architectural creation safely into the 21st century while adapting it to current needs. The fact that the development program for the Shrine of the Book area was carried out in parallel to - but not in coordination with - the main expansion plan is disturbing and suspicious. It is also frustrating that the guardians at the gate have fallen asleep - or perhaps were put to sleep - on their watch.

A new myth

Construction of the Second Temple Model was commissioned in 1966 by the owner of the Holyland Hotel, Hans Kroch, in memory of his son, Yaakov, who was killed in the 1948 War of Independence. The historian Prof. Avi Yonah was in charge of its design. The recent construction of a luxury apartment complex - one of the most monstrous building projects in the country - where the hotel once stood, led Kroch's grandson Hillel Charney (one of the owners of the residential project) to search for a new home for the model. The hand of God, as has already been said, led him to the Israel Museum, which graciously agreed to adopt it.

The model is currently about 2,000 square meters, and there are plans to expand it beyond the Herodian city walls to include the valleys surrounding Jerusalem to the south: the Kidron and Ben-Hinnom valleys. The overall look of the model is reminiscent of a classic Roman city as depicted in the collective imagination from archaeological sites throughout the former Roman Empire, as well as from literature and films.

The model was based on literary and historical sources, not archaeological evidence, with additions from the archaeological and architectural imagination of Prof. Yonah. Archaeological digs in the Old City after the 1967 War turned up a few inaccuracies that were then corrected. Historical research has also shown that the red tiles on the roofs of the wealthy in the model's upper city had not been invented in Herod's time. Museum officials, however, prefer leaving the model as a finished work rather than making changes.

For the move to its new home, the model was sawn into 1,000 pieces, each about one square meter, and reassembled at the site. The "Temple" could not be cut up, and was the last piece to be put into place. The hand of God? Or perhaps the birth of a new myth. At its new location, the model has remained in Holyland hands: The current site is owned by the Holyland Hotel company, which spent $3.5 million to move the model. A visit to the model is included in the price of museum entry.

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Extreme Heat Advisory Issued For L.A. County

(CBS) LOS ANGELES Los Angeles County health officials Thursday issued an extreme heat advisory for Southern California due to the National Weather Service's forecast of high temperatures. While people don't need to be told it's hot outside, they do need to be reminded how to take care of themselves, children, elderly and even their pets when the weather gets this hot, county public health director Jonathan Fielding said.Triple-digit temperatures were expected in valley and desert areas, Fielding said.

When the temperature is this high, prolonged sun exposure may cause dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke,he said. Health officials advised people who will be outdoors to wear light or loose-fitting clothing; drink water often; avoid unnecessary exertion and wear a hat.

More BRUSSELS, June 28 (Reuters) - Israel and Palestinian militants must "step back from the brink" before a crisis over the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier spirals out of control, the European Union said on Wednesday. All sides need to consider their responsibilities extremely carefully, EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said in a statement. She reiterated a call for those holding Corporal Gilad Shalit to free him and urged Israel to act with prudence" to allow diplomatic efforts to secure his release to work.

Both sides must step back from the brink before this becomes a crisis that neither can control, she said.Israel sent tanks backed by helicopter gunships and artillery into the Gaza Strip on Wednesday to step up pressure on Palestinian militants to release Shalit, who was captured in a cross-border raid by Palestinian gunmen three days earlier.

Quake hits Iran; no reports of casualties Wed Jun 28, 6:33 PM ET

TEHRAN, Iran - An earthquake shook southern Iran early Thursday morning, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Radio reports said residents of the southwestern city of Bandar Abbas poured into the streets after the quake hit.The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 1:32 a.m. (local time) and had a magnitude of 5.6. It was centered about 35 miles southwest of Bandar Abbas or about 650 miles southeast of Tehran, the capital. No other details were immediately available.

Even moderate quakes have killed thousands of people in the past in the Iranian countryside where houses are often built of bricks. In March, three strong earthquakes and several aftershocks jolted western Iran overnight, killing at least 66 people. In February last year, a 6.4-magnitude quake rocked the town of Zarand in southern Iran, killing 612 people and injuring more than 1,400.Some 26,000 people were killed by a 6.6-magnitude quake that flattened the historic southeastern city of Bam in the same region in 2003.

U.S. Northeast Floods Kill 9; Evacuations Ordered (Update7)

June 28 (Bloomberg) -- A storm system that battered the mid- Atlantic U.S. this week moved north to New England, causing floods that killed at least nine people in three states, forced thousands from their homes and washed out four lanes of Interstate 88 in New York. States of emergency were declared for counties in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey today as rivers rose. While the storms have passed and the sun has peeked from the clouds, the situation is expected to worsen as water from the storms feeds from tributaries into major rivers like the Susquehanna and the Delaware. We pray that we're going to be spared here, but it looks like the danger may be far from over,'' said Justin Fleming, a spokesman for the Emergency Management Agency in Pennsylvania.

Officials in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, ordered an evacuation of as many as 200,000 people from the Wyoming Valley, including Wilkes-Barre, after forecasters said the Susquehanna may crest tonight as high as 15 feet above flood stage. Three people died last night in Maryland when they were swept out of the bed of a pickup truck stranded in high water, the Associated Press reported.

Interstate Disaster

In upstate New York, high water washed out a section of Interstate 88. This morning, two tractor-trailer drivers were killed after their rigs fell into the 55-foot-wide, 25-foot-deep chasm that stretched across all four lanes of the highway near Unadilla, New York, state police Lieutenant Robert Galletto said. Officials in Binghamton ordered evacuations of at least 4,000 people as the Susquehanna --
20 feet higher than the norm for this time of year -- lapped over flood walls in the city.In Trenton, New Jersey, police closed state route 29 along the Delaware, forecast to crest tomorrow about eight feet above flood stage.Traffic accidents related to high water also killed one person in Pennsylvania and another in Maryland. A 15-year-old boy drowned in a Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, lake, and the boyfriend of the boy's mother also drowned trying to rescue him, AP said.

Rescue crews in Maryland searched for two teenagers who were reported missing last night. Their parents said the boys went to look at a rain-swollen creek in Frederick County; the father of one of the boys later found his 14-year-old's bicycle and some
clothing. In Alleghany County in southwestern Virginia, rescuers searched for a missing 8-year-old girl who was swept into floodwaters yesterday afternoon, the Roanoke Times reported.

Storm's Path

A low that formed yesterday off the Carolinas moved over the Chesapeake Bay overnight with gale-force winds between 39 and 54 miles per hour (63 to 87 kilometers per hour), the National Weather Service's National Hurricane Center said. The system is now over New England.`The rain has gone; it's now draining off into rivers and creeks,' weather service meteorologist Roy Miller said in Mount Holly, New Jersey. Rainfall of 6.11 inches was recorded this morning in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, and 4.75 inches in Myerstown, he said. One observer for the weather service reported 13.3 inches in Nescopeck in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

Coastal and inland flood warnings and watches were issued today for eight states from Vermont to Virginia. About 50 National Guard members in Pennsylvania have been sent to two flooded counties, and about 650 more could be called in if flooding worsens, said Fleming of the Pennsylvania emergency office. Evacuations are ordered on rivers in four counties, he said.

Difficult Situation

In Trenton, officials ordered about 1,500 residents to evacuate the so-called Island and Glen Afton neighborhoods near the Delaware River, Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes said.`We really have a very difficult situation on our hands, he said in a telephone interview. In parts of Maryland and Virginia, more than 12 inches (30 centimeters) of rain fell in the past four days, according to the weather service. Power outages and flooding forced several government buildings in Washington, including the Justice Department and the Internal Revenue Service to close this week.

Montgomery County, Maryland, officials ordered the evacuation of about 2,000 people below a leaking earthen dam at Lake Needwood east of Rockville, said Lieutenant Dorcus Howard Richards, a spokeswoman for Montgomery County's fire and rescue service. The lake rose 25 feet above normal, she said. Maryland's Brunswick commuter train line remained closed today because of trees knocked onto the tracks by the storm, Maryland Transit Administration spokeswoman Cheron Wicker said. Freight trains were stopped on the tracks, and five trains on the agency's Penn Line were canceled. Maryland expects to have service fully restored tomorrow, she said. State lawmakers in Trenton trying to agree on a budget by a June 30 deadline delayed a key hearing by the Assembly's budget committee because of flooding around the statehouse.

Huge Asteroid to Fly Past Earth July 3 Joe Rao,SPACE.com

An asteroid possibly as large as a half-mile or more in diameter is rapidly approaching the Earth. There is no need for concern, for no collision is in the offing, but the space rock will make an exceptionally close approach to our planet early on Monday, July 3,passing just beyond the Moon's average distance from Earth. Astronomers will attempt to get a more accurate assessment of the asteroid's size by pinging it with radar. And skywatchers with good telescopes and some experience just might be able to get a glimpse of this cosmic rock as it streaks rapidly past our planet in the wee hours Monday.

The closest approach occurs late Sunday for U.S. West Coast skywatchers. The asteroid, designated 2004 XP14, was discovered on Dec. 10, 2004 by the Lincoln
Laboratory Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR), a continuing camera survey to keep watch for asteroids that may pass uncomfortably close to Earth. Although initially there were concerns that this asteroid might possibly impact Earth later this century and thus merit special monitoring, further analysis of its orbit has since ruled out any such collision, at least in the foreseeable future.

Size not known

Asteroid 2004 XP14 is a member of a class of asteroids known as Apollo, which have Earth-crossing orbits. The name comes from 1862 Apollo, the first asteroid of this group to be discovered. There are now 1,989 known Apollos. The size of 2004 XP 14 is not precisely known. But based on its brightness, the diameter is believed to be somewhere in the range of 1,345 to 3,018-feet (410 to 920 meters). That's between a quarter mile and just over a half-mile wide. Due to the proximity of its orbit to Earth [Map] and its estimated size, this object has been classified as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid” (PNA) by the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

There are currently 783 PNAs. The latest calculations show that 2004 XP14 will pass closest to Earth at 04:25 UT on July 3 (12:25 a.m. EDT or 9:25 p.m. PDT on July 2). The asteroid's distance from Earth at that moment will be 268,624-miles (432,308 km), or just 1.1 times the Moon's average distance from Earth.Spotting 2004 XP14 will be a challenge, best accomplished by seasoned observers with moderate-sized telescopes. On April 13, 2029, observers in Asia and North Africa will have a chance to see another asteroid, but without needing a telescope.

Asteroid 99942 Apophis, about 1,000 feet (300 meters) wide, is expected to be visible to the naked eye as it passes within 20,000 miles (32,000 km). Astronomers say an asteroid that large comes that close about once every 1,500 years.

Observing plans

As 2004 XP14 makes its closest approach to Earth, astronomers will attempt to gauge its size and shape by analysis of very high frequency radio waves reflected from its surface. Such radar measurements of the exact distance and velocity of the asteroid will allow for precise information on its orbit. From this scientists can also discern details of the asteroid's mass, as well as a measurement of its density, which is a very important indicator of its overall composition and internal structure. Astronomers plan to utilize NASA's 70-meter (230-foot) diameter Goldstone radar, the largest and most sensitive antenna in its Deep Space Network.

Located in California's Mojave Desert, the Goldstone antenna has been used to bounce radio signals off other Near-Earth asteroids many times before, and it is now being readied to “ping” 2004 XP14 on July 3, 4 and 5. Augmenting the Goldstone observations will be radar observations scheduled at Evpatoria in the Ukraine, commencing several hours prior to the July 3 observations at Goldstone.Editor's Note: A SPACE.com viewer's guide for 2004 XP14 will be presented in Joe Rao's weekly Night Sky column on Friday, June 30.

Palestinians claim chemical warhead fired at Israel
Published: 6/28/2006

GAZA CITY - An armed group loosely affiliated to Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas's Fatah party claimed Thursday to have fired a chemical warhead at Israel in response to Gaza incursions and arrests in the West Bank. An Israeli army spokeswoman said no rocket launch or impact had been identified whatsoever in the last few hours. We fired a rocket with a chemical warhead on Sderot, a spokesman for the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Abu Qussai, said in reference to Israeli Defence Minister Amir Peretz's home town close to the border with Gaza. It is to avenge the attempt to invade the Gaza Strip and the arrest of ministers and members of parliament, in the West Bank from the governing Palestinian faction Hamas, the spokesman said.

Israeli tanks and troops rolled a short distance into the northern Gaza under the cover of darkness early Thursday, Palestinian sources said. On Wednesday, troops launched two incursions into southern Gaza aimed at piling on the pressure on the Palestinians to free a 19-year-old corporal abducted by three other militant groups on Sunday. 06/29/2006 02:39 GMT

IDF Knocks Out Electricity, Bridges in Gaza
By Hillel Fendel (ARUTZ-7 NEWS)

The IDF began its "Operation Summer Rains" offensive Wednesday night with the entry of Israeli forces into southern Gaza. The stated goal: The release of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit. In addition to knocking out electricity in much of Gaza, the operation has included:
* Aerial missile attack on an electricity station south of Gaza City
* Aerial attacks on three bridges in the central Gaza Strip, over dry river beds
* Artillery fire at open areas in the southern Gaza Strip
* Entry of armored forces into the Dahaniya area, mainly the abandoned airport, where the IDF has set up a headquarters. This area represents a strategic control and observation point over the southern Gaza Strip. One incident of gunfire and anti-tank missile fire at the IDF forces has been reported, causing no injuries.Former Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh (Labor) said today, I warned many times in the past that if you retreat from a territory unilaterally and leave hostile elements there, you will end up having to go back in.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and other Israeli officials continue to tirelessly emphasize that the purpose of the IDF operation is only to bring about the release of the abducted soldier; he did not mention stopping the Kassam rocket attacks against Israel. "The operation's only goal is to return Gilad home, Olmert said today. Israel will not wage any negotiations with the terrorists for his release. Olmert continued, This military operation which will continue in the coming days is designed only for this purpose alone. We have no interest in hurting Palestinian civilians, and none were hurt today. Whatever damage is caused to the civilian population is the fault of the Hamas government and its representatives in Syria... We have no interest in re-conquering Gaza, and no intention to remain there. We only want to free Gilad. Only in passing did Olmert address the issue of the 150 Kassam rockets that have been fired at Sderot over the past weeks: We will also fight the terrorists; not one of them will be immune.

Foreign Minister Tzippy Livny similarly said, after meeting with U.S. Secretary of Justice Alberto Gonzalez this morning, that the reason for this operation in Gaza is not hatred or punishment, but rather to try to free Gilad. Similarly ignoring the Kassam rockets, Livny added that Israel expects the international community to continue to exert pressure on the Palestinian Authority to free the soldier and prevent a further escalation of the situation.Four Kassam rockets were fired towards Ashkelon this morning. An IDF statement explained that the purpose of the measures taken thus far is to prevent the kidnappers from transferring the soldier from place to place, and to otherwise disrupt their activity. In addition, the operation sends a clear message to the terror organizations holding the soldier captive that if he is not released safely and quickly, further operational means remain available to the IDF.

Mohammad Nazal, allied with the ultra-intransigent Khaled Mashaal of the Damascus-based Hamas leadership, said that Hamas would not agree to free the Israeli soldier without a deal [for] something in return." He told AP that "this is the popular demand, and we cannot let down our people. A quick poll released on Monday showed that 86% of the Arab public in the Palestinian Authority negates releasing the soldier without receiving anything in return.Meshaal heads the clan that is taking an even more militant stand against freeing the soldier than the Hamas government.Justice Minister Chaim Ramon (Kadima) equated Mashaal with Bin Laden, saying that Mashaal is within our target sights. He called upon the international community not to "stand idly by while Syria grants shelter to Mashaal, who oversaw the kidnapping of the soldier.

Within Israel, the general consensus appears to be against talking with Hamas. Even Shimon Peres, speaking with CNN today, said, For Israel to enter into negotiations with the kidnappers would turn Khaled Mashaal and the band of murderers into victors.
MK Nissan Slomiansky (National Union/NRP) said, "At this time, with the IDF entering Gaza, we must put aside all our differences of opinion, and stand together aside the government, the soldiers of the IDF and their officers, and hope that they will succeed in their mission and return safely home.MK Yitzchak Galanti (Pensioners) said, Only a combination of pressure on the civilian population that elected the Hamas government and targeting the Hamas government leaders will bring about the release of the abducted prisoners and the rehabilitation of Israel's deterrence power.

Arab MK Azmi Bishara, speaking with the Al-Jazeera television station, justified the Hamas kidnapping of an Israeli soldier. He said that it was a fair response to Israel's killing of civilians in Gaza. Bishara did not mention that the killings were an accidental side-effect of Israel's attempt to kill terrorists. Two extreme left-wing Meretz Party MKs - Zahava Gal'on and Ran Cohen - suggested that Arab prisoners be released in exchange for the soldier Gilad Shalit. They were quickly censored by their party colleague Avshalom Vilan, however, who said that talk of this nature at this time is irresponsible, and hurts the chances of releasing the kidnapped soldier.

General Karlheinz Viereck, the German force commander of EUFOR - the European Union military operation in DRC- said that EUFOR is prepared to use "deadly force" if necessary to protect the integrity of the DRC National elections on July 30, in case deterrence fails. If deterrence fails, we can use force if necessary, even deadly force. If deterrence fails [...] we can use force, if necessary even deadly force," the General told reporters at a press conference in Brussels on Tuesday, 13 June 2006.EUFOR, which is placed under the mandate of the United Nations Security Council, will be operational from July 29," he said, in the run up to the first phase of DR Congo's presidential and legislative elections in over 40 years.

General Viereck is very confident of the success of the mission, which involves 2,000 European soldiers, of which 800 will be deployed in the Kinshasa region, with another 1,200 on standby in Libreville, Gabon for rapid deployment to quell any potential election unrest. We want to be visible in Kinshasa in order to prevent any potential problems during the electoral period.I have all the necessary force and we will be a credible one. We want to show the Congolese people that we are here to safeguard the elections, assured the German force commander, whose army is principally composed of soldiers from France and Germany, as well as troops from 16 other EU countries, including Turkey. We want to be visible in Kinshasa to have a dissuading effect, in order to prevent any potential problems during the electoral period," General Viereck added.

The terms of EUFOR's mandate is for four months, covering the first phase of the DRC election period up to the end of November. The force is authorised to act in support of MONUC's 17,600 blue berets stationed in the country. It will be the second EU military operation in support of the UN in Africa, after operation ARTEMIS, which was launched during the summer of 2003 in Bunia, in the province of Ituri, in eastern DRC.EUFOR advance communications and logistics teams numbering some 80 personnel from France, Germany and Belgium arrived into the DRC in the past week. Their objective is to lay the groundwork before the main force arrives in the coming weeks.According to EUFOR spokesman Colonel Peter Fuss, there are no operational troops on the ground as of yet. There has been no exact date decided yet as to when the main body of the force will begin to arrive, he explained.

It is understood that the 800 strong Kinshasa force will be positioned all over Kinshasa, including N'Jili airport, with a main camp at N'Dolo.EUFOR commander General Viereck will arrive into the DRC for a press conference to be held on June 22 at 11:00am in the Memling Hotel in Kinshasa.

CHRISTIAN GROUPS SLAM GAY PRIDE PARADE

1-Remembering Rabbi Menachem Schneerson. 2-Will Canada be 1st cashless Society. 3-Christian Groups Slam gay pride Parade.4-Drugs a World problem.

Dear Friend,

Tomorrow night, June 28th - 3 Tammuz, marks twelve years since the passing of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. We've posted lots of information below to help our visitors learn more about the Rebbe's devotion to G-d, discover how deeply he cared for each human being, and to glean insight into his teachings. The Rebbe would frequently insist that even the loftiest of thoughts must be translated into actual deed.

Please join us on this special day in learning something additional, reciting an
additional prayer, and giving some extra charity. Let us also try and apply some of the Rebbe's care and selfless dedication to our own interaction with family, friends and total strangers. There can be no more fitting tribute to the Rebbe than millions of good deeds, mitzvot, performed on his day.May G-d help us that in the merit of our collective acts of goodness we quickly greet our righteous Moshiach, at which time we will be reunited with our beloved Rebbe and all our loved ones.

Sincerely,

The Staff of Chabad.org

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

Will Canada be the first cashless society?

Canada has long been one of the most wired nations in the world, and as a nation we’ve always been among the first to adopt new technologies and adapt our lifestyles to them. Thanks to our massive, sprawling country with several thousand miles separating some of our provinces, our innovations in communication have always been one of Canada’s strong suits. But another realm Canadians seem to be slightly ahead of the pack on is cashless payments. Canada was the first place for services such as Interac to catch on, and Canadians remain the world leaders in using debit cards. It seems we’re just as willing to cut out the bank cards too, in favor of cell phones and Internet payments.

Here’s a column by tech expert Dave Chalk on the topic: Canadians letting their fingers do the paying,Not sold on the idea yet? Take, for example, this new service in Calgary, which aims to make paying at parking meters easier than ever: New parking system to scrap meters. Here’s another story on the topic, giving us a glimpse into a cashless future where cellphones act like debit cards: Cellphones will work like credit or debit cards. Once technologies like cellphone payments become the norm, will we truly be on our way to becoming the first cashless society?

And will there be some unforeseen pitfalls and forks in the road along the way? Here’s at least one article that suggests there might be:Consumers pay price for cashless trend So, what do you think about all these developments in cashless payments? Do you think they’re a blessing and a convenience, or do you have a hard time getting past all that Biblical number of the Beast stuff and warnings about no one being able to buy or sell except he that hath the mark in his right hand or on his forehead?

ROMANS 1:22-32
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Christian groups slam J'lem gay parade

Leaders of three Jerusalem-based Christian organizations issue statement saying parade is provocative ,Ynetnews.Three major Christian organizations based in Jerusalem issued a statement condemning the World Pride gay parade planned for the city in August. We do so out of our great love and respect for Jerusalem, the only city in the world that the Bible decrees as holy, read a statement signed by the Bridges For Peace, Christian Friends of Israel and the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem.

The statement argued that organizers have planned the event in Jerusalem to provoke "those of biblical faith" and not because of the city's importance to the gay and lesbian community. The decision to hold this event in Jerusalem can only be seen as a calculated and confrontational act meant to provoke and offend those who adhere to timeless, biblical moral standards in the very place they hold most dear, the statement said.It continued: We stand in solidarity with the clear majority of Jerusalem residents who oppose this degradation of their city, and we urge the proper national and local authorities to reconsider the decision to allow the event to take place.

Jews, Arabs against parade

Meanwhile, earlier in the week leading American Rabbi Yehuda Levin organized a Jerusalem conference attended by both Jewish and Arab religious leaders who expressed their staunch objection to holding the Gay Pride Parade in the capital.Among the participants were Arab-Israeli sheik and MK Ibrahim Sarsur, Tekoa Rabbi Menachem Froman and Arab MK Abas Zkoor. The two leading Palestinian religious leaders, Sheikh Taysir al-Tamimi and Sheikh Hamad Bitawi, were denied entry to Israel but phoned in their objection to holding the event in Jerusalem. During the conference Sarsur said “if they (gays) will dare to approach the Temple Mount during the parade – they will do so over our dead bodies, adding that “the Gay Pride Parade is an attack on Jerusalem that aims to damage the Islamic identity of young Arabs in the city. This attack is more venomous than the Zionist attack to make Jerusalem Jewish,he said.,(06.27.06, 23:52)

REVELATION 18:23

Marijuana use 'out of control’ worldwide: UN official,(AP)27 June 2006

WASHINGTON - Marijuana use worldwide is “out of control” because it grows everywhere, is in high demand and erroneously is considered by many to be harmless, a senior United Nations official said on Monday.Antonio Maria Costa, executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, highlighted the marijuana problem at a news conference as he released his office’s 2006 World Drug Report.Marijuana, also known as cannabis, is a danger because it contains increasingly potent amounts of THC, a banned substance, Costa said.

While governments around the world generally have succeeded in containing use of heroin, cocaine and amphetamines, Costa said marijuana is a different story.Marijuana, he said, is out of control. It’s out of control in supply because it’s a weed; it grows everywhere. It’s out of control in demand because it’s erroneously considered a light drug.John Walters, head of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, agreed that marijuana is a massive global problem. It’s not just a gateway, it is a dead end as well as an opening for many other people who go on and use other things, and are polydrug users. It has been for a long time,” said Walters, who joined Costa at the news conference.

The UN report released by Costa generally was upbeat, boasting gains - including that opium poppy cultivation was down 22 percent in 2005.On the negative side, the report found that cocaine use is reaching alarming levels in Western Europe. It attributed the decline in opium poppy cultivation to cutbacks in the three main source countries of illicit opium in the world: Afghanistan, Myanmar and Laos. Opium is the main ingredient for heroin. In Afghanistan, in 2005, opium poppy cultivation decreased for the first time since 2001, the report said. Still, it said, that country accounted for 89 percent of opium production worldwide. The State Department’s annual report on illicit drugs, issued in March, acknowledged that opium production is hampering democracy-building efforts in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan’s huge drug trade severely impacts efforts to rebuild the economy, develop a strong democratic government based on rule of law, and threatens regional stability, the report said.Despite the sharp decrease in the total area under cultivation in all opium-producing countries, the UN report said production was down only 5 percent due to more favorable weather conditions during the 2005 growing season in Afghanistan. The world’s supply of opium has shrunk, but in an unbalanced way, the study said.“Within a few years, Asia’s notorious Golden Triangle, once the world’s narcotics epicenter, could become opium-free. But in Afghanistan, while the area under opium cultivation decreased in 2005, the country’s drug situation remains vulnerable to reversal.

This could happen as early as 2006.Assessing the gamut of illicit drugs, from heroin to cocaine as well as marijuana, amphetamines and ecstasy, the report concluded: Drug control is working, and the world drug problem is being contained.Levels of drug cultivation and drug addiction are much lower than they were 100 years ago, it said.Even more importantly, in the past few years, worldwide efforts to reduce the threat posed by illicit drugs have effectively reversed a quarter-century-long rise in drug abuse that, if left unchecked, could have become a global pandemic, the report added.

Israel and Jordan agreed to ease trade barriers and phase in the first free trade agreement between Israel and an Arab state by the end of 2010. According to the deal, more than 80 percent of Jordan's exports to Israel and more than 50 percent of Israeli exports to Jordan will be exempt from customs duties by 2010. Today, only 9.7 percent of Israeli exports and 73 percent of Jordanian exports have such preferential terms. in addition to the bilateral benefits, the agreement will allow greater exports from both nations to reach the United States and the European Union.Source: Reuters, (December 23, 2004)

Fatah and Hamas Near Agreement
By Hillel Fendel(ARUTZ -7 NEWS)

Fatah and Hamas announced this afternoon that, despite their public differences on the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit, they would be signing an agreement this evening regarding a unity government. It is still possible, however, that last-minute disagreements will delay the signing. Several Hamas splinter groups have said that they do not accept all the clauses of what is known as the Prisoners' Document, on which the agreement is based. The agreement stipulates a working government arrangement between Fatah and Hamas, while naming the PLO as the sole representative of the Arabs in Judea, Samaria and Gaza.

The document does not rule out terrorism, but rather restricts it to Judea and Samaria. It also mentions the “Right of Return” of Palestinian refugees six times as a fundamental right and political goal. Contrary to popular opinion, the document does not explicitly recognize Israel or even a two-state solution. It begins with an affirmation that [t]he Palestinian people at home and in exile seek to liberate their land, then claims a Palestinian right to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital on all the land occupied in 1967, and also asserts our people’s historic right in the land of our ancestors. If the agreement is signed, the option of a referendum in the Palestinian Authority areas - the apparent reason for the violence between the two groups of late - will drop from the agenda.

Yes Nuclear Weapons will be used in the future.

ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.

EZEKIEL 20:47
47 And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.

ZEPHANIAH 1:18
18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

MALACHI 4:1
1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

REVELATION 8:7
7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

REVELATION 9:18
18 By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.

Palestinians: Chemical warfare if Israel invades Gaza
But terrorist sources admit current toxic arsenal 'primitive',11:28 a.m.
Eastern By Aaron Klein,© 2006 WorldNetDaily.com

JERUSALEM – If Israel launches a ground assault in the Gaza Strip, the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group will attack Israelis with chemical and biological weapons the group has developed, according to a pamphlet distributed yesterday by the Brigades. But sources in the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, speaking on condition of anonymity, said while the group is attempting to acquire biological and chemical agents, their current capabilities in the field still are mostly primitive. With the help of Allah, we are pleased to say that we succeeded in developing over 20 different types of biological and chemical weapons, this after a three-year effort, said the Al Aqsa statement, which was released yesterday and made national headlines here today.

We say to (Prime Minister Ehud) Olmert and (Defense Minister Amir) Peretz: Your threats of invasion do not frighten us. We will surprise you with new weapons you have not faced until now. As soon as an IDF soldier sets foot on Gazan land, we will respond with a new weapon. The group claimed it was working to add chemical and biological agents to missiles that are regularly launched from the Gaza Strip aimed at nearby Jewish communities. The Al Aqsa Brigades, the declared "resistance wing" of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party, is responsible for scores of suicide bombings, shooting attacks and rockets launched from Gaza.

Israeli security officials told WND Al Aqsa's claim of developing more than 20 kinds of chemical and biological agents is "rhetoric." They said Israel has information the group in the past has conducted low-level experiments adding some kinds of chemicals, including cyanide, to suicide belts, but that Palestinian groups currently don't have "serious" chemical or biological capabilities. They also said Palestinian terror groups currently do not have capabilities to add chemical or biological agents to missiles but that there was a fear some countries, particularly Iran, may be assisting in such efforts. Sources in the Al Aqsa Brigades told WND the group was experimenting with chemical agents.

They claimed they currently have in their weapons arsenal certain agents that can
be thrown or shot at civilians in canisters, but they declined to name the specific agents. One Al Aqsa source said the group's work in Gaza so far has been limited mostly to Al Aqsa members who are studying chemistry at local universities where biological agents are not available and chemical agents are limited. They said outside parties were helping the group add agents to missiles, but would not comment on the current status of the program or name the outside parties.

Palestinian terror groups in the past have discussed adding chemical and biological agents to suicide bomb belts. Mahmoud Abu Tir, a Hamas legislator, was arrested by Israel in the early 1990s and accused of plotting to poison Israeli water supplies. In a recent WND interview, Abu Tir refused to confirm or deny he was involved in the plot. In 2002, Israeli security forces foiled a plan by Hamas to poison the soda fountain in a popular Jerusalem cafe.

Earthquake jolts Bengkulu, Indonesia

A tectonic earthquake measuring 5. 2 on the Richter Scale jolted Bengkulu province, Indonesia, Sunday evening but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The epicenter of the quake was located at 5.12 degrees southern latitude and 101.6 degrees eastern longitude, or about 100 km southwest of Bengkulu City, at a depth of 23 km below sea level, Antara news agency quoted the Kepahiang geophysics office's head Ali Muzayin as saying on Monday.

Residents of Bengkulu City felt the quake at between the second and third level of Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI). A number of people, who were watching a World Cup match on that evening, panicked and rushed out of their houses when they felt the quake.Muzayin said Bengkulu was twice jolted by tremors in June 2006. The first tremor , on June 10, measured 3.8 on the Richter Scale.Bengkulu Province is quite prone to earthquakes. On June 4, 2000, an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter Scale rocked Bengkulu, killing 94 people and injuring hundreds of others. Indonesia lies in a zone known as the Pacific "ring of fire", which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. Among the worst earthquakes to hit the country was the 8.9 magnitude tumbler followed by tsunami in Aceh and North Sumatra in December 2004 which killed over 168,000 people. (Source: Xinhua)

West NIle season approaching with summer weatherShelley Tomlinson,Tuesday June 27, 2006

Melfort Journal — It is a little too early to tell how much West Nile Virus will affect Saskatchewan, according to Phil Curry, an entomologist who serves as the provincial West Nile co-ordinator for Saskatchewan. He oversees the surveillance of West Nile infection in birds and mosquitoes. We will definitely see West Nile activity this year. It's sort of become endemic in Saskatchewan, particularly southern Saskatchewan over the last four years, said Curry.Culex tarsalis is a type of mosquito that carries the West Nile Virus. Curry said the first generation of mosquitoes carrying the disease were found in southern Saskatchewan during the
week of June 12.

He said he is expecting carriers of the virus to be found in the Parklands this week.We are expecting the second generation next week, said Curry. There are typically three generations during the summer although there can be more than three. In 2004, there were four generations of mosquitoes because it was a long, dry summer. They (mosquitoes) build up there numbers with each successive generation, said Curry.Mosquitoes hibernate over the winter time and when the weather warms up they come out of hibernation in relatively low numbers, said Curry. This year, there was a very low mortality over the winter because it was such a warm winter, he said. The mosquitoes build up their numbers and by July and August the number of mosquitoes increases dramatically.July and August are also the months where the risk of West Nile also increases.

It's the time when we get the hottest weather and it's the time when we get most of these types of mosquitoes that can carry the virus from birds to humans, said Curry. Most towns and cities such as Melfort have mosquito control programs to help prevent the spread of West Nile Virus.People can also take precautions of their own to reduce the risk of mosquito bites, said Curry. They can wear repellents. They can cover up. They can gear their activities to times of the day when mosquitoes aren't as active. Mosquitoes are more active during dusk to dawn and throughout the night. To eliminate the number of mosquitoes in your yard, Curry suggests making sure there is no stagnant water around your home since mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. As well, keep your grass mowed because mosquitoes like to rest in the tall grass during the day.

According to Curry, 80 per cent of people who contract the disease do not show any signs. Roughly 19 per cent of people become sick with varying degrees of illness. Under one per cent of people develop a severe form of the disease which includes neurological damage, high fever, brain swelling and death.Signs of West Nile Virus include flu-like symptoms.According to a release by the government of Saskatchewan, there were 60 West Nile Virus cases in 2005 and two deaths. A third death was attributed to the complications from the virus.Curry said that there was an outbreak of the West Nile Virus in 2003. There were 947 human cases of West Nile virus reported including seven deaths.

TEL AVIV — Israel has begun participation in its first NATO exercise. The Israel Navy has contributed a surface vessel to NATO's Cooperation Mako, which began on Sunday, Middle East Newsline reported. Officials said Israel sent a Saar-5-class multi-mission missile boat for the Black Sea exercise off the coast of Romania. The deployment of the navy's Eilat vessel marked the first time Israel has participated in a NATO exercise. Until now, Israel's military served as an observer.Since 1994, Israel has been a member of NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue, a seven-member group that also contains Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia. Over the last year, NATO has offered group members participation in exercises and an intelligence exchange.

Officials said Israel has offered to contribute to NATO search-and-rescue as well as peace-keeping missions. But they said Israel would not deploy troops.Israel also plans to participate in NATO's Operation Active Endeavor, designed to battle Al Qaida and weapons of mass destruction in the Mediterranean. Officials said the navy intends to post a senior officer in Naples, the headquarters of the operation.

In this story it will be the EU not Russia that makes the 7 yr treaty with Israel/Arabs and many.

Chinese flash flood kills 18

Flash flooding caused by torrential rain in south China’s Hunan province killed 18 people and left 15 missing, the official Xinhua News Agency said yesterday. Some 10 inches of rain fell Sunday on Hunan’s Longhui county, prompting the floods and mudslides, which toppled at least 15 houses, Xinhua said. Rescue crews were looking for the missing on Monday, the report said. While the months of June through August mark the annual rainy season that sets off floods and landslides in China, storms this year arrived unusually early. Prior to Sunday, rain storms in southern China, including Hunan, had killed 170 people since late May and forced 1.6 million people to flee their homes.

Northerners threatened by forest fires call for more action
Last Updated: Tuesday, June 27, 2006 | 11:56 AM CT ,CBC News

With more people fleeing communities in northern Saskatchewan threatened by forest fires, some residents are accusing the provincial government of not doing enough to fight the fires.Forest fires on the weekend forced 172 people out of their homes in Stony Rapids, about 90 kilometres south of the Saskatchewan-Northwest Territories border.

They fled to nearby Black Lake, but on Tuesday night, that First Nations community was threatened too, with two fires within 40 kilometres of the town. According to Chief Fred Throassie, 217 people were flown to Prince Albert, including 178 Black Lake residents and 39 Stony Rapids evacuees who had been staying in Black Lake.Throassie said people are worried about a shift in the winds and, because there are fewer evacuation options in the North, they need to plan in advance. The only road that we have going out is closed, and the only airlines we have which we are partners with … they took off out of the area,he said. Here we are, stranded here with no ways, no means of transportation.

Throassie said Saskatchewan Environment needs to start fighting fires when they are farther away from towns.Al Sayne, who runs a restaurant in Stony Rapids, said firefighters have been battling spot fires in the community for the last few days and there was a fire less than a kilometre to the west. There are a lot of people concerned that without more help from the province, the northern hamlet could get "wiped out," he said.In particular, residents want to see the province's water bombers at work.We were told yesterday they couldn't come in here because of the smoke, he said. There were more than 50 forest fires burning across Saskatchewan earlier this week.Smoke from the fires could be seen as far south as Regina.

WorldPride criticises anti gay Jerusalem conference
Jerusalem WorldPride runs from August 6-12 2006,26-June-2006,Marc Shoffman

The organisers of this year’s WorldPride in Jerusalem have criticised a conference set up in the Holy City which promised violence to stop the parade from going ahead.Israelis, Arabs, and Palestinians came together in Jerusalem to voice disapproval of the march.

Arab-Israeli sheik and MK Ibrahim Sarsur, said: “If they (gays) will dare to approach the Temple Mount during the parade, they will do so over our dead bodies. The Gay Pride Parade is an attack on Jerusalem that aims to damage the Islamic identity of young Arabs in the city.

The event was set-up by American Rabbi Yehuda Levin, who is also planning a similar conference nearer the event.Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, North American co chair of Jerusalem WorldPride said: "I am both outraged and saddened by American Rabbi Yehuda
Levin's efforts to undermine and threaten WorldPride, its organisers and participants.Levin's use of religion as a weapon of bigotry and violence is offensive to all who care about God and religion and morality.

He blasphemer's God's name when he says that Jerusalem does not belong to all of us. Yehuda's organising of a Jerusalem conference attended by both Jewish and Arab religious leaders, expressing their violence and hate riddled objections to holding WorldPride in Jerusalem, should be offensive to all people of faith and those who believe in free expression and diversity.

His comments, along with those of two leading Muslim religious leaders, Sheikh Taysir al-Tamimi and Sheikh Hamad Bitawi, clearly and bluntly advocated violence against LGBT people and are despicable and dangerous. Who are they to claim Jerusalem as only for those who agree with their divisive and bigoted views? These so-called religious leaders are the true disgrace to the true spirit of our diverse faiths.Advocating violence goes against every holy principal we hold dear as Jews, in solidarity with millions of Christian, Muslims and people of diverse faiths. Jerusalem was chosen as the site for WorldPride because it represents a centre of tolerance, pluralism, and love for all humanity. The thousands of WorldPride participants, from Israel and all over the world and of diverse faiths
- will be the best answer to Levin's display of intolerance and unholy values.

My participation in the historic multifaith convocation, the first ever to take place at WorldPride, will include religious leaders from the gay and allied communities joined together in mutual respect, not brought together in hate as Levin has done. Muslims, Jews, and Christians will come together in a display of a religious voice that respects all human beings who were created in God's image, and obligated to universal values of respect and love. Meanwhile last week Israeli politician, Otniel Schneller, of Israel’s strongest coalition, Kadima party said planned visits by gay groups would turn the Knesset (parliament) into "Sodom and Gomorrah.

Iran warns it may use oil as weapon if interests attacked Sun Jun 25, 7:03 AM ET

TEHRAN (AFP) -Iran's oil minister has warned that the country would use oil as a weapon if its interests are attacked. If the country's interests are attacked, we will use all our capabilities and oil is one of them, Kazem Vaziri-Hamaneh said on Saturday, the television reported Sunday.Iran is currently locked in a standoff with the international community over its nuclear program, facing the threat of sanctions if it does not accept a US-backed offer and halt sensitive nuclear work.Vaziri-Hamaneh warned about impact any sanctions on Iran would have in the oil market, saying the price of crude, currently around 70 dollars a barrel, risked going up to 100 dollars.

The world needs energy and understands the affect of oil sanctions against Iran on the market and no-one will make such an unreasonable decision, he added. The West fears Iran, which is OPEC's number two oil exporter, is secretly trying to build nuclear weapons, a charge denied by Tehran which insists its atomic program is purely for electricity-generation.

Abbas, Hamas agree on killing JewsIsrael's 'peace partner' gives green light to "restricted" terrorism, June 25, 2006

BENJAMIN – Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority Chairman and Fatah chief who repeatedly presents himself as a peace partner Israel can deal with came out publicly at the weekend in agreement with Hamas on the question of murdering Jews in Samaria and Judea. The accord was disingenuously reported as a positive step by the leading leftist Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz, which holds to an editorial line arguing in support of anything that looks like dislodging the logjam in the “land-for-peace” process.Under the headline “Fatah-Hamas deal limits attacks to the territories” the paper reported that Hamas and Fatah officials in Gaza
agree Saturday night on most of the central clauses in the so-called Prisoners’ Document, including the one “limiting” terrorist attacks to those against Jews living in Samaria and Judea.

Prior to that meeting Abbas and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh had met in Gaza in a sign that most of the differences between the two groups have been resolved, Ha’aretz said.Recent weeks have seen Hamas, which swept the PA general election last January, and Fatah, the largest faction in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and widely held to be the only legitimate representative of the “Palestinian people,” clashing violently, almost to the point of civil war.Abbas has insisted that Hamas officials agree to adopt a document drawn up by terrorists in Israeli jails and seized on by the PA chairman as a means of bringing at least temporary unity
to the warring factions, enabling them to focus on attacking Israel.

Although the PLO was formed to destroy Israel before 1967, i.e. before the “occupied territories” existed, it is – in accordance with the “Phased Plan” for Israel’s destruction adopted in 1974 – apparently prepared for now to limit its “resistance activities” against Jewish men, women and children to those living in the biblical heartland of the Jewish state. This means its terrorism will be focused against those Jews who still hold to the biblical promises of the land, and who retain a fear of God. The Israelis living in “pre-1967 Israel” will be spared for now, until their religious and ideological countrymen in the Mountains of Israel have been dealt with and
driven out.

Ohio governor declares flood emergency Sun Jun 25, 1:02 PM ET

NORWALK, Ohio - Gov. Bob Taft on Saturday surveyed damage from two days of severe storms and declared emergencies in two northern Ohio counties. Floodwaters had mostly receded in Norwalk, about halfway between Cleveland and Toledo, which was one of the hardest-hit areas. Residents continued piling blankets, clothes, carpets and other ruined possessions on the curb to be carted away.About 800 homes in Huron County were damaged in the storms, including at least 45 with major damage, said Bill Ommert, director of the county's emergency management agency. He estimated the damage at $2 million to homes and businesses and $5 million to farmers' crops.

The governor's emergency declaration for Huron and Erie counties clears the way for state resources to be used in the cleanup efforts and allows the state to seek potential federal aid. It's going to take a while for these families to get back on their feet,Taft said. The storms, which began Wednesday night and continued into Friday morning, killed two people, produced several tornadoes and knocked out power to thousands. About 30,000 American Electric Power customers remained without electricity Saturday, spokesman Doug Flowers said. The storms also damaged hundreds of homes and businesses in Cuyahoga County. It hit us fast, said Stan Cohara of Valley View, a Cleveland suburb. "It was like someone opened a big faucet.

I just spent $30,000 remodeling my kitchen, and now it's shot.In southeastern Pennsylvania, heavy rain fell on Chester County on Saturday, damaging a railroad bridge, blocking underpasses, stranding motorists and causing minor mudslides.Up to 5 inches of rain fell within a few hours, according to the National Weather Service.I thought it was a little shower, and all of a sudden, it was a river, Pauline Rulon said. What I saw today was unreal.

Two feared drowned as Philippines braces for deadly storm-volcano combination Sun Jun 25,

AM ET MANILA (AFP) - The Philippines put civil defense personnel on alert for possible deadly volcanic mudflows as a tropical storm began bearing down on a volcano that has been spitting ash for weeks. Civil defense reports said a ferry sank in rough seas off Sorsogon province, leaving at least two missing and feared dead. More than 40 others were rescued and rushed to hospital, the reports said. Before leaving on a visit to Europe, President Gloria Arroyo said the civil defense office has prepared contingency plans in case rain from the storm mixes with ash on the slopes of Bulusan volcano in Sorsogon to form deadly mudflows.

Arroyo said two C-130 cargo planes, eight helicopters including the presidential helicopter and a train were ready to travel to the Bicol peninsula south of Manila to help people who might be displaced.Arroyo said vulcanologists did not believe that the 1,565-meter (5,134-foot) Bulusan mountain was likely to erupt in the next few days but they should prepare for such contingencies.More than 2,000 people have already evacuated their homes around the volcano for fear of mudflows, the civil defense office said.

There have been periodic ash emissions at Bulusan since March but these have become more frequent this month. The Philippine vulcanology institute said it had detected four volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours. It warned that prolonged rain might trigger life-threatening mudflows. The institute reiterated that residents should stay at least four kilometers (2.5 miles) from the crater. The government weather station said the tropical storm, locally named as "Domeng", was heading northwest towards Bicol at 19 kilometers (12 miles) per hour. The eye of the storm, packing maximum winds of 90 kilometers (56 miles) per hour, passed Biliran
island and was expected to pass beside the Bicol peninsula on Monday morning. It was not expected to hit the region directly.

Sea travel in the area around the storm has been restricted, stranding over a thousand people at various ports, the civil defense office said. The second level of a four-step storm alert has been raised over parts of Bicol and the neighboring islands and provinces. A first-level storm alert has been raised in provinces just south of Manila.

Floods force evacuations on Md. shore Sun Jun 25, 2:23 PM ET

FEDERALSBURG, Md. - Heavy rains caused serious flooding Sunday in parts of Maryland's Eastern Shore, washing out roads and forcing evacuations. Federalsburg Mayor Betty Ballas declared an emergency for the town of about 2,600 on Sunday morning after 10 to 12 inches of rain fell overnight. About 30 people had to evacuate, police said. There were reports of 4 to 5 feet of water in some areas, said Jeff Welsh, a spokesman for the Maryland Emergency Management Agency. Some residents evacuated homes in the Galestown area, said Mike Ziegler, an assistant director of the emergency agency. At least 20 roads were closed in Dorchester County, said a spokesman for the Maryland State Police. And in Seaford, Del., between 10 and 15 people had to leave their homes, said a city spokeswoman.

No hidden agenda, says European Union June 23 2006 at 09:06AM

Abuja, Nigeria - A senior European commission official said here on Thursday that there was no hidden agenda in a European Union plan to develop regionally integrated markets for its goods as of 2008.The European Commission's deputy director general for trade, Karl-Friedrich Falkenberg, was responding questions from journalists about suggestions that the EU initiative was really aimed at looking for a dumping ground for European goods. There is no hidden agenda in terms of early access for European goods, Falkenberg said. The official held talks here with Nigerian and west African regional bloc ECOWAS representatives to assess an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) currently being negotiated between the European Commission and six regions in sub-saharan Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific (ACP).

This is not what we are negotiating' The EPA seeks to govern trade arrangements and co-operation in trade and economically related matters, focusing on developing regional markets within the ACP states. We are not looking for having free access on January 1, 2008, for European goods into ECOWAS... (and)... we are not looking for that for other regions, Falkenberg said.We are looking for defining the period of time over which reciprocity is going to come in. That reciprocity will have to take into account the spate of development of industries, agriculture, services here in the region, he added. So I think there is no hidden agenda behind this. It is a jointly set target date, we are jointly working towards it... we will like to have in Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific stronger trading partners. If EPA was simply about liberalising everything on January 1, 2008, if I were in your shoes, I will be sceptical also, the EU official continued.

The point is that this is not what EPA is all about. This is not what we are negotiating. Nigeria's presidential economic adviser, Osita Ogbu, said the negotiation was for free trade involving some degree of tariff reductions, fair protection, culminating in an agreement that should be completed by January 2008. - Sapa-AFP

'End Times' Religious Groups Want Apocalypse Soon'End times'

religious groups want apocalypse sooner than later, and they're relying on high tech -- and red heifers -- to hasten its arrival.,By Louis Sahagun, (LA Times Staff Writer) For thousands of years, prophets have predicted the end of the world. Today, various religious groups, using the latest technology, are trying to hasten it.Their endgame is to speed the promised arrival of a messiah. For some Christians this means laying the groundwork for Armageddon. With that goal in mind, mega-church pastors recently met in Inglewood to polish strategies for using global communications and aircraft to transport missionaries to fulfill the Great Commission: to make every person on Earth aware of Jesus' message. Doing so, they believe, will bring about the end, perhaps within two decades. In Iran, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has a far different vision. As mayor of Tehran in 2004, he spent millions on improvements to make the city more welcoming for the return of a Muslim messiah known as the Mahdi, according to a recent report by the American Foreign Policy Center, a nonpartisan think tank.

To the majority of Shiites, the Mahdi was the last of the prophet Muhammad's true heirs, his 12 righteous descendants chosen by God to lead the faithful.Ahmadinejad hopes to welcome the Mahdi to Tehran within two years.Conversely, some Jewish groups in Jerusalem hope to clear the path for their own messiah by rebuilding a temple on a site now occupied by one of Islam's holiest shrines. Artisans have re-created priestly robes of white linen, gem-studded breastplates, silver trumpets and solid-gold menorahs to be used in the Holy Temple — along with two 6½-ton marble cornerstones for the building's foundation.

Then there is Clyde Lott, a Mississippi revivalist preacher and cattle rancher. He is trying to raise a unique herd of red heifers to satisfy an obscure injunction in the Book of Numbers: the sacrifice of a blemish-free red heifer for purification rituals needed to pave the way for the messiah. So far, only one of his cows has been verified by rabbis as worthy, meaning they failed to turn up even three white or black hairs on the animal's body.

Linking these efforts is a belief that modern technologies and global communications have made it possible to induce completion of God's plan within this generation.Though there are myriad interpretations of how it will play out, the basic Christian apocalyptic countdown — as described by the Book of Revelation in the New Testament — is as follows:Jews return to Israel after 2,000 years, the Holy Temple is rebuilt, billions of people perish during seven years of natural disasters and plagues, the antichrist arises and rules the world, the battle of Armageddon erupts in the vicinity of Israel, Jesus returns to defeat Satan's armies and preside over Judgment Day.

Generations of Christians have hoped for the Second Coming of Jesus, said UCLA historian Eugen Weber, author of the 1999 book Apocalypses: Prophecies, Cults and Millennial Beliefs Through the Ages. And it's always been an ultimately bloody hope, a slaughterhouse hope," he added with a sigh. "What we have now in this global age is a vaster and bloodier-than-ever
Wagnerian version. But, then, we are a very imaginative race. Apocalyptic movements are nothing new; even Christopher Columbus hoped to assist in the Great Commission by evangelizing New World inhabitants. Some religious scholars saw apocalyptic fever rise as the year 2000 approached, and they expected it to subside after the millennium arrived without a hitch. It didn't. According to various polls, an estimated 40% of Americans believe that a
sequence of events presaging the end times is already underway.

Among the believers are pastors of some of the largest evangelical churches in America, who converged at Faith Central Bible Church in Inglewood in February to finalize plans to start 5 million new churches worldwide in 10 years. Jesus Christ commissioned his disciples to go to the ends of the Earth and tell everyone how they could achieve eternal life, said James Davis, president of the Global Pastors Network's "Billion Souls Initiative, one of an estimated
2,000 initiatives worldwide designed to boost the Christian population.

Earthquake hits Indonesia's Sulawesi island 9 minutes ago

JAKARTA (Reuters) - A powerful undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Sunday, but the state meteorology and geophysics agency said there were no reports of casualties or damage. An agency official said the quake's epicenter was 72 km (45 miles) beneath the sea bed, about 110 km (70 miles) from the city of Gorontalo in
northern Sulawesi.

It did not generate a tsunami.Huge landslides and flooding caused by torrential rains killed more than 200 people in Sulawesi this week, but that was in the southern part of the island. Earthquakes are frequent in Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country. A massive earthquake in December 2004 triggered a tsunami that left 170,000 people killed or missing in Aceh province.A quake with a 6.2 magnitude shook the island of Java late last month, killing more than 5,700 and leaving thousands homeless in and around Yogyakarta.Indonesia's 17,000 islands sprawl along a belt of intense volcanic and seismic activity, part of what is called the "Pacific Ring of Fire.

Strong quake jolts southern Iran Fri Jun 23, 12:52 PM ET

TEHRAN (AFP) - A strong earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale has jolted southern Iran. The official IRNA news agency said no casualties have yet been reported from the quake, which struck at 9:51 am (06GMT), with the epicentre at the town of Lar in Fars province.Iran suffers frequent earthquakes. The worst quake in recent times razed the southeastern town of Bam in December 2003, killing 31,000 people. In late March, a powerful earthquake hit western Iran, killing at least 70 people and leaving thousands homeless. In February 2005, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale killed more than 600 in Zarand.

French left presidential hopeful opposes core EU plan23.06.2006
10:11 CET By Mark Beunderman, EU Observer

Segolene Royal, the leading socialist candidate for the job of French president, has rejected her centre-right opponent's idea to create a stronger EU core of the bloc's six biggest states. Ms Royal has recently emerged as a popular socialist candidate to take on the centre right's star candidate, Nicolas Sarkozy, in the French presidential elections in May next year.

Some opinion polls indicate that Ms Royal and Mr Sarkozy could head for a neck-and-neck race, with the campaign so far primarily focusing on both candidates' tough-on-crime statements. But in an interview with Le Monde on Thursday (22 June), Ms Royal also said she is opposed to the key idea of Mr Sarkozy that the six largest EU states should take the lead in the union's affairs through closer co-operation.

I distrust the domination of some [member states] by the others. We have done much harm, by certain declarations, to so-called small countries, she indicated. Look at the damage caused by Jacques Chirac in the countries of the east, she went on to say referring to the current French president's famous 2003 remark that new EU member states had missed a good opportunity to shut up on Iraq. The socialist frontrunner also indicated that the EU needs a new treaty despite her country voting down the EU constitution in a popular referendum last year. We will need a new treaty and above all a social treaty, she said. The current Europe only has an economic leg.

Without that second, social leg, nothing is possible, she said, signalling that she believes any new treaty should include stronger social protection. Mrs Royal's differences with Mr Sarkozy on the constitution question are less clear than on the EU-six issue. Mr Sarkozy has proposed a step-by-step implementation of the most important elements of the current text of the EU
constitution, but also believes the constitution will not enter into force in its current form.

The two candidates appear to agree however on the need for tax harmonisation in the EU. Ms Royal indicated Still more than any technical rules, we need a true political will to construct what I call the Europe by evidence, which combines stimulating competition, social and fiscal
harmonisation, and shared practices on industrial champions, research programmes and business and social experiences.

New death in Sarawak HFMD epidemic24 Jun 2006,Desmond Davidson

KUCHING: Another child has died from the hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in Sarawak. The 16-month-old toddler from Kpg Dagang in Marudi succumbed to the disease at the Miri General Hospital about 11pm yesterday. He was evacuated by helicopter to the better-equipped Miri Hospital at noon on that day when he became critically ill. His death brings the death toll from HFMD in the State to 11. Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri George Chan said yesterday the death had dealt a setback to plans to declare the epidemic over. Just when we are about to declare the epidemic over, we got another death, he lamented when contacted by phone.

The last HFMD death, that of a five-year-old girl from Kapit was on May 7. Dr Chan, who is the state’s disaster and relief management committee chairman, said before the epidemic could be declared over, it had to register an “incident free” two incubation period – about 28 days. The “incident free” refers to daily new cases of under 40 and no deaths. With the latest death, the whole process has to be repeated again. The disease has afflicted 10,861 children in the state with 43 new cases reported as at noon yesterday, according to the daily HFMD press release by Dr Chan. Of the 43 new cases reported yesterday, 11 were admitted into hospitals with the rest given out-patient treatment. Sibu has the highest number of sufferers with 2,604 cases reported, followed by Miri with 2,006 cases, Kuching (1,456), Bintulu (1,333), Sarikei (920) and Mukah (770).The majority of children afflicted with the disease were under the age of four.

WHEN THE RAIN COMES,'La Nina' now household word after northern floods
PIYAPORN WONGRUANG

Unprecedented heavy downpours that triggered mudslides and killed more than 100 people in five lower northern provinces last month have made ''La Nina'' a household word. The Meteorological Department posted a warning about the La Nina weather phenomenon on its website early this year, while climatologists have repeatedly alerted agencies of La Nina-triggered rainfall. But few people took the warning seriously and did not realise how dangerous it was until flash floods struck Uttaradit, Nan, Lampang, Phrae, and Sukhothai on May 23. 'This year's rain came earlier than expected, and more fell than usual. These are signs of the La Nina effect,' said Suparerk Tansriratanawong, the Meteorological Department chief. Thailand's wet season, which usually starts in May, is characterised by a low pressure ridge, the southwestern monsoons, and tropical storms from the South China Sea.

The low pressure ridge, however, moved up earlier than usual this year, causing heavy downpours in the northern provinces. The incident was possibly triggered by La Nina. Scientists are still studying the cause of the weather episode, the opposite of the El Nino phenomenon. La Nina, a Spanish word meaning ''little girl,'' is characterised by a drop in sea temperature in the Pacific Ocean, while El Nino is associated with a rise of sea temperature. La Nina brings humidity from the sea overland, leading to a sharp rise in rainfall, while El Nino causes widespread drought. Climatologists say that when the sea temperature drops, the easterly wind in the eastern Pacific will blow much stronger, increasing the strength of the monsoon and bring more moisture to the Southeast Asia region.

La Nina has occurred nine times over the past 50 years. Its last appearance was in 2001, when precipitation in Thailand was also unusually high. La Nina can last from nine months to two years. Anond Snidvongs, director of Start, a regional research centre on global climate change, urged meteorologists to study the relation between La Nina and seasonal weather events to better understand the impact of La Nina on the country. Meteorological officials relied too much on high-technology weather forecast models, while ignoring conventional methods, such as forecasting the weather from past records. 'These figures could also help us map out flood-prone areas, said Mr Anond. Although the weather phenomenon had brought excessive amounts of water this year, officials should carefully manage the water as the country might be hit by a water shortage in the dry season, or when La Nina ends.

Scientists predict that La Nina will last until the end of the year, but according to the latest inspection, the sea temperature in the eastern Pacific Ocean has returned to near normal, meaning La Nina's impact has faded. Although the amount of La Nina-triggered downpour has decreased, people in the North and Northeast should be on alert for flash floods because the country was still under the influence of low pressure ridges and the southwestern monsoon, said Mr Suparerk. Tropical storms, which usually hit the country a few times during the wet season, were also on their way, he added.

Fire commander reassures residents as wildfire battle continues
Associated Press ,Jun. 23, 2006 06:14 PM

The head of the team fighting a roughly 4,000-acre wildfire on Friday reassured evacuees about the safety of their homes in a scenic northern Arizona canyon but emphasized that the battle isn’t won yet. Firefighters have created a good firebreak using a highway and deliberately set fires to clear away vegetation in part of Oak Creek Canyon, where roughly 430 homes and 30 businesses have been evacuated since Sunday, said incident commander Paul Broyles. We feel good about that, Broyles told about 100 people attending a meeting in Sedona for area residents, including evacuees.

“It’s still not a done deal, he added. “I’m not going to guarantee we’ve completely turned the corner just yet. Broyles said residents may be allowed to return to their homes in two to four days. They’re being kept out partly because embers could still start fires in the canyon. No homes have burned and officials said the fire was 15 percent contained Friday, with full containment predicted by June 28.I feel a lot better now about the safety of our house, said Sarah Peterson, one of the evacuees at the meeting. The firefighters have done an awesome job. We couldn’t be more thankful the house is still there.Firefighters had been concerned Friday that possible storms could bring strong and erratic winds that would whip the fire out of control. But the winds hadn’t materialized by the evening.

I’m greatly encouraged. Three days ago, this looked a lot grimmer. It’s still not caught but it’s a lot safer. We’ve got a good chance of pulling it off, said Larry Sears, a division supervisor with the fire crew. The fire began Sunday as a transient’s campfire and quickly spread to steep, rugged terrain above Oak Creek Canyon, a lush area dotted with homes and resorts.About 660 firefighters assisted by helicopters fought the fire Friday. They burned away vegetation that could fuel the fire in some places and used hand tools to scratch out firebreaks in others. Crews manned fire engines to defend homes if needed. The fire is the second to hit the Sedona area, about 90 miles north of Phoenix, during the past month. An 836-acre wildfire destroyed five buildings near the Village of Oak Creek in early June and forced the evacuation of about 200 people. Supercomputers are about to get a lot more super
By Robert S. Boyd, Knight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - The federal government is pushing computer scientists and engineers to greatly step up the speed and capacity of America's supercomputers.Officials say much faster performance is needed to handle a looming tidal wave of scientific, technical and military data.Powerful new telescopes, atom-smashers, climate satellites, gene analyzers and a host of other advanced instruments are churning out enormous volumes of computer bytes that will overwhelm even the swiftest existing machines. In the next five years, the government's goal is a computer system that can process at least a quadrillion (a million times a billion) arithmetic operations per second. The best current machines operate in the trillions (a thousand times a billion) of calculations per second. Within the next five to 10 years, computers 1,000 times faster than today's computers will become available. These advances herald a new era in scientific computing," according to Raymond Orbach, undersecretary for science at the Department of Energy.

A quadrillion-rated computer, known technically as a ``petascale’’ system, will be at least four times faster than today’s top supercomputer - IBM’s BlueGene/L - which holds the world’s record at 280 trillion operations per second. ``Peta’’ is the prefix for a quadrillion in the metric system. ``Tera’’ stands for a trillion, so BlueGene is a terascale system. On a more familiar level, a petascale computer will be at least 75 times faster than the most powerful game machine, such as IBM’S XBox-360, and 100 times faster than a top-of-the-line desktop personal computer, such as the Apple Power Mac. On Tuesday, RIKEN, a Japanese research agency, announced that it had built a computer system that theoretically can perform 1 quadrillion operations per second. If so, this would be the world’s first true petascale computer. Henry Tufo, a computer scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who operates a BlueGene/L system, said it would take petascale computer power to solve problems that stump present-day systems.

One of the most compelling and challenging intellectual frontiers facing humankind is the comprehensive and predictive understanding of Earth and its biological components, Tufo said in an e-mail message. Petascale systems will open up new vistas (for) scientists. To meet this goal, the National Science Foundation asked researchers on June 6 to submit proposals to develop the infrastructure for a petascale computing system to be ready by 2010. As examples of difficult questions that only a petascale system could handle, the NSF listed:

- The three-dimensional structure of the trillions of proteins that make up a living organism. Proteins are the basic building blocks of all living things.
- The ever-changing interactions among the land, ocean and atmosphere that control the Earth's maddeningly complex weather and climate systems.
- The formation and evolution of stars, galaxies and the universe itself. The Department of Energy also is offering $70 million in grants for teams of computer scientists and engineers to develop petascale software and data-management tools.

The scientific problems are there to be solved, and petascale computers are on the horizon, said Walter Polansky, senior technical adviser in the DOE'S Office of Advanced Scientific Computing. For example, the Energy Department wants ultra-fast computers in order to determine the 3-D structure of molecules that let drugs pass through cell walls, knowledge that can be vital against cancer. This is completely new, Orbach wrote in the current issue of Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing, a DOE publication. No one has ever probed that region of science before. The Energy Department also needs petascale computing to help solve problems that are blocking the development of nuclear fusion, an unlimited, nonpolluting energy source that's baffled designers for decades. The DOE and NASA, the space agency, are collaborating in an effort to determine the nature of the dark energy and dark matter that are thought to make up 95 percent of the universe. Petascale computer power will be needed here, too.
