2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication,(VATICAN IN POLITICS) and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

in istanbul-The Pope removes his shoes and stands with his head bowed and hands clasped together, beside the Great Mufti of Istanbul, Rahmi Yaran, who, with open palms, recites a prayer in a low voice. This is the most important scene of the second day of Francis’ visit to Istanbul. Under the dome of the Blue Mosque, the Pope said: “Not only must we glorify and praise God, we must also worship him. This is the most important thing.”The Pope left Ankara this morning, and as met and welcomed by Patriarch Bartholomew at Atatürk Airport. The first stop upon arrival in the centre of the old city, was the great Sultan Ahmet mosque, otherwise known as the Blue Mosque because of the turquoise ceramic tiles that cover the surface of its huge dome. When the Mufti and the Pope reached the mirhab, the staircase that points in the direction of Mecca, the Muslim dignitary first explained the significance of this place and then invited the Pope for a moment of meditation. It was a moment of “silent worship”, said the Vatican spokesman, Fr. Federico Lombardi, adding that it was a “beautiful moment of interreligious dialogue”.The same scene was witnessed on 30 November 2006, when Benedict XVI visited Turkey. In his case those two minutes were of historic importance and put an end to the controversies and distorsions that followed Ratzinger’s speech in Regensburg. Benedict XVI stood completely still and shoeless, his white slippers peeping out from under his tunic. His hands were crossed and rested against his gold pectoral cross. He prayed in silence, his face relaxed and his eyes semi-closed. Now and again his lips moved, but only just. The Mufti at the time told the Pope: “We stop to pray here for 30 seconds, to gain a sense of peace.” Then, Benedict XVI began reciting a prayer out loud in Arabic. With semi-closed eyes, Ratzinger gathered in prayer and prayed for much longer than the required 30 seconds. The Muftis and all those present had to wait for him to finish, surrounded by a silence that was unreal. Finally, Ratzinger ended his prayer, bowing his head slightly in the direction of the niche as a sign of respect and said to the Mufti “Thank you for this moment of prayer.” “The Pope paused for meditation and will have certainly turned his thoughts to God,” the Vatican spokesman, Fr. Federico Lombardi confirmed. And so, the unexpected, last minute visit to Istanbul’s great Blue Mosque lasted but a handful of minutes and yet became one of the culminating moments of the Pope’s visit to Turkey. The simple gesture had a strong impact in the media. That evening, Milliyet, one of Turkey’s most widely read newspapers, titled its online edition “Like a Muslim”.This same scene was seen today, eight years later, another visual sign of that mutual respect and friendship that exists between followers of different faiths, which light years away from any religious wars and conflicts of civilisations. In neither cases was it an absolute first: John Paul II had prayed in the Umayyad mosque in Damascus in May 2001, three months before the September 11 attacks. But he had done so placing his trembling hand on the marble sarcophagus that contained a relic believed to belong to John the Baptist, in a place which had been Christian before being turned into a Muslim place of worship: the mosque was built where a church had previously stood. His successors, Benedict XVI and Francis, however, prayed in silence in a place originally built for Muslim worship. After his visit to the Blue Mosque, Francis was driven by car to the nearby Hagia Sophia museum. The great Byzantine Balisicawas transformed into a mosque by Mehmet II until the founder of the Turkish Republic, Kemal Atatürk gave orders for it to be turned into a museum in 1935. The use of the space as a place of worship is strictly prohibited. But on a visit to Turkey in 1967, Paul VI knelt down in Hagia Sophia for a few moments. This gesture of his sparked protests from university groups and Muslim representatives: Islamic-oriented newspaper Tercüman wrote: “While we as Muslims are not allowed to invoke the name of Allah in Hagia Sophia, or we risk being arrested, the Pope decided to erase all memory of the day Mehmet the Conqueror gave it to us as a gift.” Neither Benedict XVI nor Francis knelt down inside the museum. After Benedict XVI’s visit in 2006, the Turkish government granted permission for a small room within the complex to be used as a prayer room by anyone who wished to pray there. At the end of his visit, Francis wrote the words Hagia Sophia in Greek in the museum’s guestbook, followed by the quote: “Quam dilecta tabernacula tua Domine (Psalmus 83).Contemplating the beauty and the harmony of this sacred place, my soul rises up to the Almighty, the source and origin of all beauty. I ask the Almighty to always guide humanity’s hearts along the path of truth, goodness and peace.”

in Istanbul-At the end of his speech, Pope Francis asked for Patriarch Bartholomew’s blessing and bowed down before him to receive it. Bartholomew then kissed Francis on the head. And so, the second day of the papal visit concluded with a highly symbolic gesture. Night had already fallen in Istanbul on the eve of the Feast of St. Andrew, Patron Saint of the Orthodox Patriarchate, as Francis entered the Church of St. George with his brother Bartholomew. Their moment of prayer was brief and gave the world a taste of what is to happen tomorrow when the Pope attends the Divine Orthodox Liturgy celebrated by the Ecumenical Patriarch. At the entrance to the church, the Pope venerated a large silver-plated icon.In his welcoming speech, Bartholomew said Francis “translat[ed] the love of the Chief Apostle (the Apostle Peter, Ed.) to his brother, the First Called Apostle (Andrew).” The Patriarch recalled “similar visits by [His] Eminent predecessors”, quoting Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI. He spoke about Francis’ “will” and that of the “most Holy Church of Rome” to continue the fraternal and stable advance with the Orthodox Church for the restoration of full communion between Our Churches”. Bartholomew said he sees Francis’ visit as “an historical event filled with favourable signs for the future”.The Patriarch thanked Catholics for returning the relics of St. Euphemia and also mentioned St. Basil and St. John Chrysostom. “May these holy Fathers, on whose teaching our common faith of the first millennium was founded, intercede for us to the Lord so that we may rediscover the full union of our Churches, thereby fulfilling His divine will.”“As I express my heartfelt “thank you” for your fraternal welcome, I sense that our joy is greater because its source is from beyond; it is not in us, not in our commitment, not in our efforts – that are certainly necessary – but in our shared trust in God’s Faithfulness,” Francis responded in his own greeting.Speaking about “the joy and the peace that the world cannot give, but which the Lord Jesus promised to his disciples and, as the Risen One,” Francis added: “Andrew and Peter heard this promise; they received this gift. They were blood brothers, yet their encounter with Christ transformed them into brothers in faith and charity. In this joyful evening, at this prayer vigil, I want to emphasize this; they became brothers in hope.”

During the mass, the Pope urged Christians: “let us throw off our defensiveness” and our “entrenched” “ideas”-iacopo scaramuzzi
istanbul-It is necessary to overcome “misunderstandings, divisions and disagreements” in order “to be a credible sign of unity and peace”. This was the message Pope Francis addressed to Turkish Christians during the first and only mass he will be celebrating on his three-day visit to Turkey. The mass celebration took place in the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Istanbul. The Pope urged Christians to abandon attitudes of “defensiveness” and stop being “entrenched within [their] ideas”.The Pope greeted representatives of other Christian religions who attended the mass: the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, the Syro-Catholic Patriarch Ignatius III Younan, the Armenian Patriarchal General Vicar of Constantinople, Filuksinos Yusuf Cetina s well as representatives of some evangelical Churches, the President of the Turkish Catholic Bishops’ Conference Ruggero Franceschini and the Apostolic Vicar of Istanbul, Louis Pelatre. The Holy Spirit “brings forth different charisms which at first glance, may seem to create disorder. Under his guidance, however, they constitute an immense richness, because the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of unity, which is not the same thing as uniformity,” Francis said. “When we try to create diversity, but are closed within our own particular and exclusive ways of seeing things, we create division. When we try to create unity through our own human designs, we end up with uniformity and homogenization.”“The Church and other Churches and ecclesial communities are called to let themselves be guided by the Holy Spirit, and to remain always open, docile and obedient,” the Pope said underlining that “ours is a hopeful perspective, but one which is also demanding. The temptation is always within us to resist the Holy Spirit, because he takes us out of our comfort zone and unsettles us; he makes us get up and drives the Church forward. It is always easier and more comfortable to settle in our sedentary and unchanging ways. In truth, the Church shows her fidelity to the Holy Spirit in as much as she does not try to control or tame him. We Christians become true missionary disciples, able to challenge consciences, when we throw off our defensiveness and allow ourselves to be led by the Spirit. He is freshness, imagination and newness. Our defensiveness is evident when we are entrenched within our ideas and our own strengths – in which case we slip into Pelagianism – or when we are ambitious or vain. These defensive mechanisms prevent us from truly understanding other people and from opening ourselves to a sincere dialogue with them.”“In our journey of faith and fraternal living, the more we allow ourselves to be humbly guided by the Spirit of the Lord, the more we will overcome misunderstandings, divisions, and disagreements and be a credible sign of unity and peace,” the Pope – whose homily was also pronounced in Turkish – said.Francis celebrated the liturgy in red vestments marking to mark the occasion of the Feast of St. Andrew, Patron Saint of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, tomorrow. He wore red instead of purple, which is the traditional colour of Advent. The liturgy featured chants and prayers from different rites, starting with Psalm 102 sung by a Chaldean children’s choir. The mass ended with music by an African choir, sung to the rhythm of drums during communion. Faithful said a prayer for the refugees present in Turkey. Masses of requests were sent by Turkish faithful to attend the papal mass but only 1300 and religious representatives managed to obtain a ticket. The cathedral and courtyard were packed. After the mass the Pope made his way to the Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople to meet Bartholomew.
