More than 44,000 Catholic women have signed a letter pressing Pope Francis to explain exactly when and how he found out about sexual abuse and misconduct allegations against a high-ranking former cardinal.“Our hearts are broken, our faith tested, by the escalating crisis engulfing our beloved Church,” states the passionately worded letter organized by the Catholic Women’s Forum. “We are angry, betrayed and disillusioned.”“We, your flock, deserve your answers now.”For the past two weeks, Francis’ papacy has been thrown into crisis by claims that U.S. cardinals and Vatican officials covered up for then-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. Even though the Vatican has known about his allegedly abusive behavior with seminarians since at least 2000, McCarrick received clerical promotions and continued publicly representing the church, The Associated Press reports.The accusations against Francis himself were brought up by the Vatican’s former U.S. ambassador, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano. The archbishop, who has long been a critic of the Argentine pontiff, claims Francis rehabilitated McCarrick, lifting canonical sanctions imposed by his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI.Francis officially removed McCarrick from ministry in June after a church investigation determined that he had sexually abused an altar boy in 1971. McCarrick resigned from the College of Cardinals the following month.Soon after Vigano’s allegations came to light, Francis told reporters that he would “not say a single word” on the subject and suggested that journalists read Vigano’s claims and make up their own minds.The archbishop’s accusations and Francis’ silence have roiled the U.S. Catholic Church, with some in the hierarchy coming to the pope’s defense while others demand a thorough investigation. Although the number of abuse cases involving priests dropped sharply after the Catholic Church adopted reforms in 2002, she said the church is still falling short in holding the hierarchy accountable and acknowledging sexual misconduct by bishops and cardinals.“These women love our Church, and they are heartbroken and appalled, not only at the underlying abuse, but also by an ecclesial culture that looked the other way in the face of egregious sexual abuse and misconduct,” Hasson wrote.The letter to the pope specifically states that the women want to know when Francis learned about McCarrick’s alleged sexual misconduct and abuse, and whether Francis released the former cardinal from any restrictions imposed by Benedict. In the letter, the Catholic Women’s Forum also takes the opportunity to remind Francis how important women are to the church. Fifty-four percent of American Catholics are women, according to the Pew Research Center. Catholic women are more likely than men to say they attend Mass at least once a week (43 percent vs. 35 percent) and more likely to say they pray every day (67 percent vs. 49 percent).“We are not second-class Catholics to be brushed off while bishops and cardinals handle matters privately,” the letter states. “We are the hands, the feet, and the heart of the Church. Harare (AFP) - Zimbabwe on Wednesday banned public gatherings in the capital Harare following a cholera outbreak that has claimed at least 21 lives and left hundreds of people ill over the past week.The outbreak, first detected in the township of Glen View outside Harare, has prompted the health ministry to declare an emergency in the city."In light of the declaration of the state of emergency, the police in Harare will not allow any public gatherings," police spokeswoman Charity Charamba said in a statement."The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing to members of the public to take heed of the warning and cooperate as this will assist in alleviating the continuous spread of cholera."The ban came ahead of a planned rally by the opposition MDC party on Saturday at which it was due to hold a mock presidential inauguration of party leader Nelson Chamisa, who it claims was denied victory in the July 30 election due to fraud.At least 21 people, including two pupils from the same school, have died over the past week in Harare from cholera and at least 3,000 haven fallen ill from cholera and typhoid, according to the health ministry."We are now at 3,067 cases... The number of deaths has risen to 21," health minister Obadiah Moyo told reporters on Tuesday.One school was closed in Glen View. - Lack of clean water, infrastructure - Chamisa toured a health facility and called on the United Nations to help contain the situation."It's more than just an emergency it is a national disaster," he said.Britain warned people thinking of visiting Harare about the cholera outbreak and urged travellers to learn to recognise symptoms of the disease.Cholera outbreaks have occurred regularly in the city as authorities struggle to provide potable water and sanitation facilities.Informal housing areas without running water have mushroomed and basic infrastructure has collapsed due to years of neglect.Tests on water samples from some wells and boreholes showed the water was contaminated with cholera and typhoid-causing bacteria.Zimbabwe, which was ruled by Robert Mugabe from independence in 1980 until his ousting last year, suffered its worst cholera outbreak in 2008.A total of 4,000 people died and at least 100,000 people fell ill.President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who succeeded Mugabe, has pledged to revive the economy and improve public services."To contain the outbreak and mobilise resources we have declared a state of emergency in Harare, and are working closely with our international partners," Mnangagwa said Wednesday on Twitter.Amnesty International castigated the authorities for failing to invest in and manage basic water, sanitation and health care systems even after the 2008 outbreak."It is appalling that in 2018, people are still dying of such a preventable disease," said Jessica Pwiti, director of Amnesty International Zimbabwe said in a statement."No lessons were learned from the 2008 epidemic and the outbreak and deaths we're seeing now is symptomatic of a still broken-down sanitation infrastructure and poor sewer management, worsened by shortages of drugs and medical supplies."She urged the Mnangagwa administration to "learn from its predecessor's mistakes" and act urgently before more lives are lost.UNICEF advised Zimbabweans to prevent the spread of cholera by regular hand-washing, drinking only safe water, washing food, cooking it throughly, and avoiding shaking hands.

The Syrian government committed war crimes by using chlorine in three attacks against civilians in 2018, UN investigators said in a report released Wednesday.The forces of President Bashar Assad used the banned chemical weapons in attacks on Douma, near Damascus, on January 22 and February 1, as well as in the northern Idlib province on February 4, the report quoted by Reuters said.An unspecified number of civilians were injured in the three attacks, including women and children.“To recapture eastern Ghouta in April, government forces launched numerous indiscriminate attacks in densely populated civilian areas, which included the use of chemical weapons,” it said.“The Commission concludes that, on these two occasions, government forces and or affiliated militias committed the war crimes of using prohibited weapons and launching indiscriminate attacks in civilian-populated areas in eastern Ghouta.”It added that “the munitions documented were built around industrially-produced Iranian artillery rockets known to have been supplied to forces commanded by the government.”In Idlib “Government helicopters dropped at least two barrels carrying chlorine payloads in the Taleel area of Saraqeb.”The report was based on hundreds of interviews with figures on the ground. It brings the number of chemical attacks confirmed to have been committed by Assad’s troops since 2013 to 33. If Iran chooses to continue pursuing a nuclear program it will face a “military” response, Intelligence Minister Israel Katz warned Wednesday.Katz was responding to the Iranian nuclear chief’s statement that the Islamic Republic’s program stands ready to build advanced centrifuges and further enrich uranium.Ali Akbar Salehi told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Iran wouldn’t be deterred by US President Donald Trump’s sanctions and withdrawal from the global nuclear deal.But Katz said that if Iran presses forward it will face a “direct threat from the United States and its allies.”The US withdrawal from the deal in May has already badly shaken Iran’s economy, crashing its currency, the rial. Katz said Iran could either cave to Trump’s demands or watch its economy collapse.Salehi had said he hoped the atomic deal would survive, but warned the program would be in a stronger position than ever if not.In a veiled threat to Israel, Salehi said the consequences would be “harsh” if there were any new attacks targeting Iran’s nuclear scientists. A Swedish court of appeals on Wednesday overturned a deportation order against a Palestinian man who firebombed a synagogue, saying he would be in danger from Israel because of his crime if returned to the Palestinian Authority.The ruling by the Court of Appeals for Western Sweden was on a motion filed by one of the three migrants convicted of hurling Molotov cocktails at a synagogue in Gothenburg last year in the wake of the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.In June, the Gothenburg District Court determined that the two Palestinians and one Syrian had “violate[d] an ethnic group because of its beliefs,” and sentenced them to jail terms between one and two years for the arson attack.The court also ordered one of the Palestinian defendants, who was in Sweden on an asylum seeker visa, to be deported back to the PA after completing his two-year sentence. The other two perpetrators, who reportedly had Swedish residency permits, were not ordered deported by the court.But on Wednesday, the SVT broadcaster reported that the deportation order was overturned on appeal since the perpetrator “could be perceived as a threat to other Jews,” and that Israel “might be interested in the matter.” In his decision, the judge said that Sweden “cannot safeguard the man’s fundamental human rights if he is deported to Palestine.”A few days after US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the Israeli capital last December, a dozen people threw multiple burning objects at the synagogue in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city.Some 20 Jewish teens participating in a celebration briefly took shelter in a cellar during the attack, but no one was injured, and minor damage to the building was caused.The attack, which was classified as a hate crime, was caught on surveillance cameras, leading to the arrests of the Palestinians and Syrian.There are around 20,000 Jews living in Sweden, according to the Official Council of Swedish Jewish Communities.The Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention says there have been between 150 and 280 anti-Semitic acts, including threats, insults and violence, each year in the past decade.JTA contributed to this report.

More than 44,000 Catholic women have signed a letter pressing Pope Francis to explain exactly when and how he found out about sexual abuse and misconduct allegations against a high-ranking former cardinal.“Our hearts are broken, our faith tested, by the escalating crisis engulfing our beloved Church,” states the passionately worded letter organized by the Catholic Women’s Forum. “We are angry, betrayed and disillusioned.”“We, your flock, deserve your answers now.”For the past two weeks, Francis’ papacy has been thrown into crisis by claims that U.S. cardinals and Vatican officials covered up for then-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. Even though the Vatican has known about his allegedly abusive behavior with seminarians since at least 2000, McCarrick received clerical promotions and continued publicly representing the church, The Associated Press reports.The accusations against Francis himself were brought up by the Vatican’s former U.S. ambassador, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano. The archbishop, who has long been a critic of the Argentine pontiff, claims Francis rehabilitated McCarrick, lifting canonical sanctions imposed by his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI.Francis officially removed McCarrick from ministry in June after a church investigation determined that he had sexually abused an altar boy in 1971. McCarrick resigned from the College of Cardinals the following month.Soon after Vigano’s allegations came to light, Francis told reporters that he would “not say a single word” on the subject and suggested that journalists read Vigano’s claims and make up their own minds.The archbishop’s accusations and Francis’ silence have roiled the U.S. Catholic Church, with some in the hierarchy coming to the pope’s defense while others demand a thorough investigation. Fifty-four percent of American Catholics are women, according to the Pew Research Center. Catholic women are more likely than men to say they attend Mass at least once a week (43 percent vs. 35 percent) and more likely to say they pray every day (67 percent vs. 49 percent).“We are not second-class Catholics to be brushed off while bishops and cardinals handle matters privately,” the letter states. “We are the hands, the feet, and the heart of the Church. Harare (AFP) - Zimbabwe on Wednesday banned public gatherings in the capital Harare following a cholera outbreak that has claimed at least 21 lives and left hundreds of people ill over the past week.The outbreak, first detected in the township of Glen View outside Harare, has prompted the health ministry to declare an emergency in the city."In light of the declaration of the state of emergency, the police in Harare will not allow any public gatherings," police spokeswoman Charity Charamba said in a statement."The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing to members of the public to take heed of the warning and cooperate as this will assist in alleviating the continuous spread of cholera."The ban came ahead of a planned rally by the opposition MDC party on Saturday at which it was due to hold a mock presidential inauguration of party leader Nelson Chamisa, who it claims was denied victory in the July 30 election due to fraud.At least 21 people, including two pupils from the same school, have died over the past week in Harare from cholera and at least 3,000 haven fallen ill from cholera and typhoid, according to the health ministry."We are now at 3,067 cases... The number of deaths has risen to 21," health minister Obadiah Moyo told reporters on Tuesday.One school was closed in Glen View. - Lack of clean water, infrastructure - Chamisa toured a health facility and called on the United Nations to help contain the situation."It's more than just an emergency it is a national disaster," he said.Britain warned people thinking of visiting Harare about the cholera outbreak and urged travellers to learn to recognise symptoms of the disease.Cholera outbreaks have occurred regularly in the city as authorities struggle to provide potable water and sanitation facilities.Informal housing areas without running water have mushroomed and basic infrastructure has collapsed due to years of neglect.Tests on water samples from some wells and boreholes showed the water was contaminated with cholera and typhoid-causing bacteria.Zimbabwe, which was ruled by Robert Mugabe from independence in 1980 until his ousting last year, suffered its worst cholera outbreak in 2008.A total of 4,000 people died and at least 100,000 people fell ill.President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who succeeded Mugabe, has pledged to revive the economy and improve public services."To contain the outbreak and mobilise resources we have declared a state of emergency in Harare, and are working closely with our international partners," Mnangagwa said Wednesday on Twitter.Amnesty International castigated the authorities for failing to invest in and manage basic water, sanitation and health care systems even after the 2008 outbreak."It is appalling that in 2018, people are still dying of such a preventable disease," said Jessica Pwiti, director of Amnesty International Zimbabwe said in a statement."No lessons were learned from the 2008 epidemic and the outbreak and deaths we're seeing now is symptomatic of a still broken-down sanitation infrastructure and poor sewer management, worsened by shortages of drugs and medical supplies."She urged the Mnangagwa administration to "learn from its predecessor's mistakes" and act urgently before more lives are lost.UNICEF advised Zimbabweans to prevent the spread of cholera by regular hand-washing, drinking only safe water, washing food, cooking it throughly, and avoiding shaking hands.

The Syrian government committed war crimes by using chlorine in three attacks against civilians in 2018, UN investigators said in a report released Wednesday.The forces of President Bashar Assad used the banned chemical weapons in attacks on Douma, near Damascus, on January 22 and February 1, as well as in the northern Idlib province on February 4, the report quoted by Reuters said.An unspecified number of civilians were injured in the three attacks, including women and children.“To recapture eastern Ghouta in April, government forces launched numerous indiscriminate attacks in densely populated civilian areas, which included the use of chemical weapons,” it said.“The Commission concludes that, on these two occasions, government forces and or affiliated militias committed the war crimes of using prohibited weapons and launching indiscriminate attacks in civilian-populated areas in eastern Ghouta.”It added that “the munitions documented were built around industrially-produced Iranian artillery rockets known to have been supplied to forces commanded by the government.”In Idlib “Government helicopters dropped at least two barrels carrying chlorine payloads in the Taleel area of Saraqeb.”The report was based on hundreds of interviews with figures on the ground. It brings the number of chemical attacks confirmed to have been committed by Assad’s troops since 2013 to 33. Six more attacks have not been definitively linked to the regime.On Tuesday US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Assad has been well warned against any chemical weapons use in an anticipated assault on Idlib province.The regime has twice been targeted by US air and missile strikes after previous alleged chemical attacks.US officials have in recent days said additional action would follow if Assad were to use the banned weapons in rebel-held Idlib.“In Idlib, we’re watching very closely what the Assad regime, aided and abetted by the Iranians and the Russians are up to,” Mattis told Pentagon reporters.Pointing to a US missile strike on a Syrian air base in April 2017 after Assad’s jets launched an alleged chemical attack in Idlib, Mattis noted that the Syrian leader had suffered massive losses to his air force.“The first time around, he lost 17 percent of his pointy-nosed air force airplanes,” Mattis said, referring to the unusual nose cones on Russian-built jets. “He’s been warned, and so we’ll see if he’s wised up.”A second strike, in April this year, saw British and French militaries assist the US-led mission.Idlib province and adjacent rural areas form the largest piece of territory still held by Syria’s beleaguered rebels, worn down by a succession of government victories in recent months.Assad has now set his sights on Idlib, and his forces have stepped up bombardment of the densely populated province since the beginning of the month.

If Iran chooses to continue pursuing a nuclear program it will face a “military” response, Intelligence Minister Israel Katz warned Wednesday.Katz was responding to the Iranian nuclear chief’s statement that the Islamic Republic’s program stands ready to build advanced centrifuges and further enrich uranium.Ali Akbar Salehi told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Iran wouldn’t be deterred by US President Donald Trump’s sanctions and withdrawal from the global nuclear deal.But Katz said that if Iran presses forward it will face a “direct threat from the United States and its allies.”The US withdrawal from the deal in May has already badly shaken Iran’s economy, crashing its currency, the rial. Katz said Iran could either cave to Trump’s demands or watch its economy collapse.Salehi had said he hoped the atomic deal would survive, but warned the program would be in a stronger position than ever if not.In a veiled threat to Israel, Salehi said the consequences would be “harsh” if there were any new attacks targeting Iran’s nuclear scientists. A string of bombings, blamed on Israel, targeted a number of scientists beginning in 2010, at the height of Western concerns over Iran’s program.Israel never claimed responsibility for the attacks on the scientists, though Israeli officials have boasted in the past about the reach of the country’s intelligence services. “I hope that they will not commit a similar mistake again because the consequences would be, I think, harsh,” Salehi warned.Israel earlier this year removed tens of thousands of documents and other materials from Iran’s secret nuclear weapons program archive, stealing them from under the regime’s nose in a Mossad operation in Tehran. The material proved that Iran lied when claiming it was not seeking to build a nuclear weapons arsenal, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, and showed that it intends to resume its nuclear weapons program if it can.Salehi also said that Trump’s decision to withdraw America from the 2015 accord “puts him on the loser’s side” of history. Those devices enrich uranium by rapidly spinning uranium hexafluoride gas.For now, the nuclear accord limits Iran to using a limited number of an older model, called IR-1s.The new facility will allow Iran to build versions called the IR-2M, IR-4 and IR-6. The IR-2M and the IR-4 can enrich uranium five times faster than an IR-1, while the IR-6 can do it 10 times faster, Salehi said. Western experts have suggested these centrifuges produce three to five times more enriched uranium in a year than the IR-1s.While building the facility doesn’t violate the nuclear deal, mass production of advanced centrifuges would. Salehi, however, said that wasn’t immediately a plan.“This does not mean that we are going to produce these centrifuges now. This is just a preparation,” he said. “In case Iran decides to start producing in mass production such centrifuges, (we) would be ready for that.”Salehi suggested that if the nuclear deal fell apart, Iran would react in stages. He suggested one step may be uranium enrichment going to “20 percent because this is our need.” He also suggested Iran could increase its stockpile of enriched uranium. Any withdrawal ultimately would be approved by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.While the UN repeatedly has verified Iran’s compliance with the deal, Trump campaigned on a promise to tear it up. (Reuters) - Hurricane Florence, on track to become the first Category 4 storm to make a direct hit on North Carolina in six decades, howled closer to shore on Tuesday, threatening to unleash deadly pounding surf, days of torrential rain and severe flooding.Fierce winds and massive waves are expected to lash the coasts of North and South Carolina and Virginia even before Florence makes landfall by early Friday, bringing a storm surge as much as 13 feet (4 meters), the National Hurricane Center in Miami warned. Catastrophic floods could follow if the storm stalls inland, it said.Although Florence was still days from arrival, authorities took extraordinary measures to move people out of harm's way. A Swedish court of appeals on Wednesday overturned a deportation order against a Palestinian man who firebombed a synagogue, saying he would be in danger from Israel because of his crime if returned to the Palestinian Authority.The ruling by the Court of Appeals for Western Sweden was on a motion filed by one of the three migrants convicted of hurling Molotov cocktails at a synagogue in Gothenburg last year in the wake of the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.In June, the Gothenburg District Court determined that the two Palestinians and one Syrian had “violate[d] an ethnic group because of its beliefs,” and sentenced them to jail terms between one and two years for the arson attack.The court also ordered one of the Palestinian defendants, who was in Sweden on an asylum seeker visa, to be deported back to the PA after completing his two-year sentence. The other two perpetrators, who reportedly had Swedish residency permits, were not ordered deported by the court.But on Wednesday, the SVT broadcaster reported that the deportation order was overturned on appeal since the perpetrator “could be perceived as a threat to other Jews,” and that Israel “might be interested in the matter.” In his decision, the judge said that Sweden “cannot safeguard the man’s fundamental human rights if he is deported to Palestine.”A few days after US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the Israeli capital last December, a dozen people threw multiple burning objects at the synagogue in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city.Some 20 Jewish teens participating in a celebration briefly took shelter in a cellar during the attack, but no one was injured, and minor damage to the building was caused.The attack, which was classified as a hate crime, was caught on surveillance cameras, leading to the arrests of the Palestinians and Syrian.There are around 20,000 Jews living in Sweden, according to the Official Council of Swedish Jewish Communities.The Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention says there have been between 150 and 280 anti-Semitic acts, including threats, insults and violence, each year in the past decade.JTA contributed to this report.

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Rockets were fired late on Tuesday in the direction of the airport in Libya's capital, residents said, forcing flights to be diverted, less than a week after the United Nations brokered a fragile truce between rival armed groups in Tripoli.A spokesman for a faction controlling Matiga airport, the only one functioning in the capital, said there were no casualties or damage. Libyan channels reported that several people had been wounded by the rockets, one of which landed in the Mediterranean sea.Rival groups have been fighting in Tripoli for several days but clashes had been focused on the south of the city. Matiga airport lies in an eastern suburb.A Libyan Airlines flight bound for Tripoli from Alexandria, Egypt, was diverted to Misrata, the airport said on its Facebook page. UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday appealed to Russia, Iran and Turkey to "spare no effort to find solutions that protect civilians" in Syria's Idlib and said it was "absolutely essential" a full-scale battle was avoided."This would unleash a humanitarian nightmare unlike any seen in the blood-soaked Syrian conflict," he told reporters.An estimated 3 million people live in Idlib - the last major stronghold of active opposition to President Bashar al-Assad. The U.N. has described it as a "dumping ground" for people evacuated and displaced from elsewhere in Syria during the seven-year war.Assad has vowed to retake the region, backed by his Russian and Iranian allies. Syrian government and Russian warplanes began air strikes in Idlib last week in a possible prelude to a full-scale offensive. They say they are targeting terrorist groups."I understand that the present situation in Idlib is not sustainable and the presence of terrorist groups cannot be tolerated. But fighting terrorism does not absolve warring parties of their core obligations under international law," said Guterres.Senior officials from Russia, Iran and Turkey met with U.N. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura in Geneva on Tuesday. The presidents of Turkey, Iran and Russia met in Tehran on Friday but failed to agree on a ceasefire in Idlib.Russia briefed the 15-member U.N. Security Council on Tuesday on the Tehran meeting, which was held as part of the so-called Astana process."Russia, Iran and Assad are demolishing Idlib and asking us to call it peace.
