Turkey blasts Israel for new settlement construction-Ankara's foreign ministry says the building of new homes in the West Bank will 'irreparably damage the peace process'-By TOI staff-AUG 26,18

Turkey slammed Israel Friday over its advancement of plans for more than 1,000 new homes in the West Bank, saying it “strongly condemns” the move.“The actions taken in disregard of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, irreparably damage the peace process,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement according to the Andolu news agency. The Turkish Foreign Ministry statement mistakenly referred to the construction of 2,000 homes — on Wednesday the Defense Ministry committee responsible for approving settlement construction gave final authorization to build 382 homes, while it also cleared another 620 for a planning stage known as a “deposit.”The European Union also expressed its disapproval about the planned construction.“If implemented, these plans would further jeopardize the prospect of a contiguous and viable future Palestinian state,” the EU’s diplomatic arm said in a statement. The bloc also reiterated its opposition to settlement construction, which it said is “illegal under international law and an obstacle to peace.”“The European Union will continue to engage with both parties and with its international and regional partners to support a resumption of a meaningful process towards a negotiated two-state solution, the only realistic and viable way to fulfill the legitimate aspirations of both parties,” it said.Saeb Erekat, the Palestinian’s top peace negotiator, called for international sanctions on Israel over the new settlement homes.“Israel’s latest settlement announcement reaffirms the commitment of the Israeli government to colonization and apartheid,” Erekat said in a statement. “It is long overdue time for the international community to impose sanctions on Israel until it recognizes and fulfills its obligations under international law and UN resolutions.”He also claimed Israel’s “colonial-settlement expansion” in the West Bank was a “war crime” and accused the US State Department of “encouraging Tel Aviv to continue with its violations of international law that threatens peace and security in our region.”The State Department on Wednesday had refrained from criticizing the approvals.Among the plans advanced for deposit Wednesday was a 370-home project in the central West Bank settlement of Adam, where Yotam Ovadia was stabbed to death in a terror attack last month. After the incident, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman announced he would be advancing a plan for hundreds of homes to be built in the settlement. While he did not say so explicitly, he was referring to the already existing plan advanced Wednesday. While most of the projects are located west of the security fence or at least west of its planned route, a number of plans are for more isolated communities.Projects for 29 homes in the southern West Bank settlement of Otniel and 52 homes in the central West Bank town of Beit El were advanced through the deposit stage.Plans that gained final approval for construction included one for 108 homes in the northern West Bank town of Nofim, one for 168 homes in Tzofim, east of Kfar Saba, and one for 44 homes in Ma’ale Adumim, a city-settlement east of Jerusalem that many right-wing lawmakers have proposed annexing. While the international community considers all settlement activity illegal, Israel differentiates between legal settlement homes built and permitted by the Defense Ministry on land owned by the state and illegal outposts built without necessary permits, sometimes on private Palestinian land.Jacob Magid contributed to this report.

Hamas warns Israel will ‘pay the price’ if Abbas’s pressure on Gaza continues-The terror group claims Jerusalem 'is responsible for ending' Palestinian Authority sanctions against the enclave-By TOI staff-AUG 26,18

Hamas warned Friday that Israel will “pay the price” if the Palestinian Authority continues its economic and political pressure on the Gaza Strip.“Israel is the one that will pay the price if [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s] sanctions against Gaza continue or intensify,” the group said. “Israel is the one responsible for ending the current situation that is coordinated and encouraged by [Abbas].”Abbas’s Fatah party, which dominates the PA, and Hamas have been deeply divided for more than a decade. Hamas, an Islamist terror group which openly seeks to destroy Israel, seized control of Gaza from the Palestinian Authority in 2007 and several attempts at reconciliation since then have failed. The PA government has been putting pressure on Hamas to reach a reconciliation deal, and earlier this year began to scale back electricity payments and other financial support in an effort to force Hamas to cede ground in Gaza.Abbas is demanding that Hamas hand over complete control of Gaza to the PA, and that the switch be conducted in a single stroke rather than in stages. He has warned against a reported deal taking shape between Israel and Hamas for a long-term ceasefire in Gaza if it does not include the PA.According to a report this week in the London-based Al-Hayat daily newspaper, Abbas insists that Egyptian efforts to mediate an accord prioritize reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas, and that the Palestine Liberation Organization, which he chairs, play a central role in agreeing to a ceasefire,Last Saturday Abbas warned that there can be no two separate entities ruling Palestinian lands, stating that if the PA is not handed complete control of the Gaza Strip, Hamas will have to take full responsibility for the territory. He made the comments at a gathering of the Palestinian Central Council, the PLO’s second highest decision-making body. And last week Abbas reportedly refused to meet with visiting Egypt intelligence chief Abbas Kamel over his discontent at being left out of the ceasefire talks. Kamel has been involved in the reconciliation efforts between Hamas and Abbas’s Fatah party, as well as the ceasefire talks between Hamas and Israel. On Tuesday Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh claimed an end to Israel’s more than decade-long blockade of Gaza was “around the corner.”Indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel have reportedly included discussion on easing the blockade, but by no means a complete lifting of it. Israel says the blockade is in place in order to prevent weapons and other military equipment from entering the Strip.Recent months have seen repeated rounds of intense violence between Israel and Hamas, along with weekly border protests at the Gaza border that have regularly included rioting, attacks on Israeli troops and attempts to infiltrate and sabotage the border fence.Around 170 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the weekly protests began, a Hamas ministry says. Hamas has acknowledged that dozens of those killed were its members. One Israeli soldier was shot dead by a Palestinian sniper. In addition to the border clashes, southern Israel has experienced hundreds of fires as a result of incendiary kites and balloons flown over the border from Gaza. Over 7,000 acres of land have been burned, causing millions of shekels in damages, according to Israeli officials.AFP contributed to this report.

Liberman asserts he has ‘nothing to do’ with Gaza ceasefire talk-In visit to border communities, defense minister says he doesn't believe in long-term truce but in calm for economic welfare; any progress hinges on return of captive Israelis-By TOI staff-AUG 26,18
Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said Friday he has “nothing to do” with any talks on a long-term ceasefire agreement with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.Speaking during a visit to the communities in the Gaza periphery, Liberman said he is “not involved” and does not believe in an accord with Hamas, and that if the terror group wants progress for the Strip, it must first return the Israeli captives and bodies of slain soldiers it is holding.“As for all the talk of an arrangement [in Gaza], I have nothing to do with it,” he said, “I’m not involved in the issue of an accord, I don’t believe in it. The only accord is the reality on the ground.”He said Hamas is “a terror organization whose main goal is the destruction of Israel, so I don’t think we have anything to talk about with Hamas. The only thing we’re saying through the Egyptians and through others and they understand this [is] there will be no movement and no new agreements…until there is a solution on the captives and missing persons.”Hamas is believed to be holding the remains of IDF soldiers Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin, whose bodies were captured by the terror group after they were killed in Gaza during the 2014 war. It is also assumed to be holding Israeli citizens Avraham Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, who each entered Gaza on their own accord.Liberman said that Israel would do all it takes to ensure calm for communities near Gaza. “First and foremost we want calm on the security front. If we decide there’s no choice and we need to launch a military operation, we’ll do what needs to be done. We’ll set the time and we’ll set the terms.”| Reports have proliferated that Israel is in advanced talks with Hamas, via UN and Egyptian mediation, for a long-term truce in the Strip.Liberman’s denial of involvement in such a deal appeared to contradict the assertions of fellow security cabinet member Naftali Bennett, head of the Jewish Home party, who has heavily criticized the defense minister for what he has seen as a faulty strategy in Gaza — and has vowed to oppose any accord with Hamas.Bennett alluded to that earlier criticism in an ironic response to Liberman’s Friday comments.“It’s nice to see that the defense minister agrees with our point of view and understands that Hamas must not be allowed to extort us,” he said in a statement.Bennett also warned that allowing Hamas to re-arm with rockets after the latest bout of violence with Israel would allow the terror group to establish itself as “Hezbollah 2” along the Gaza border.Liberman himself has acknowledged that UN and Egyptian mediation are taking place in an effort to secure a calm.On Sunday Liberman said the government’s “endgame” for Gaza was the toppling of its Hamas rulers to allow the Palestinian residents of the coastal enclave to enjoy the economic benefits of peace with Israel.Gaza has seen a surge of violence since the start of the violent “March of Return” protests along the border in March. The clashes, which Gaza’s Hamas rulers have orchestrated, have included the throwing of rocks and explosives at troops, as well as attempts to breach the border fence and attack Israeli soldiers.Palestinians in Gaza have also launched incendiary airborne devices toward Israel, burning thousands of acres of forest and farmland resulting in millions of shekels of estimated damages. At least 171 Gazans have been killed by Israeli fire since the start of the clashes, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. An Israeli soldier was shot to death by a Palestinian sniper. Hamas has acknowledged that dozens of the Palestinian casualties were members of terror groups.Additionally, Israel and Hamas have engaged in a number of brief exchanges of fire in recent months that have seen terror groups in Gaza launch hundreds of rockets and mortars toward Israeli territory, including one earlier this month that was the largest flareup in violence since the 2014 war.UN envoy Nickolay Mladenov and Egyptian officials have been seeking to broker a long-term truce between Israel and Hamas. The two sides have fought three wars since 2008.Israeli media have speculated that a deal could entail easing Israel’s blockade of Gaza in exchange for calm on the border and the return of the missing Israelis.Jacob Magid contributed to this report.

After meeting Netanyahu, Lithuanian leader proposes closer EU ties-Saulius Skvernelis calls for cooperation on counter-terrorism, and more direct dialogue to 'better understand' Israeli positions-By Agencies and TOI staff-AUG 26,18

Lithuania’s prime minister on Friday proposed talks between the EU and Israeli interior ministers focused on terrorism, amid tensions over Iran and the Palestinian conflict.“Lithuania will initiate discussion in EU home affairs council with the Israeli public security minister over terrorism threats and other security issues,” Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis told AFP in an interview.Skvernelis said he discussed the idea with Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu who is in Vilnius for a four-day visit to boost bilateral ties and build support for Israel’s interests in the Middle East.Officials said no date was set yet and the format would depend on reaction from Brussels and Western European capitals which are more critical towards Israel.Skvernelis said in an interview with the Baltic News Service that after a meeting Thursday with Netanyahu, “I believe Lithuania really has a better understanding of Israel and that understanding could be spread among other EU countries. ”“We need to better listen, hear them out and understand their position. We definitely lack a direct dialogue,” he said.“But we have to admit that today Israel is not only waging war and defending its independence, the lives of its people, but is also fighting in a wider context, if we speak about terrorism and potential expansion of IS fighters to Europe,” Skvernelis said.Lithuania, one of Israel’s stronger allies in the European Union, was behind Netanyahu’s invitation to meet with EU foreign ministers in Brussels last December, irking some Brussels officials.Skvernelis told AFP his country backs the EU position on a two-state solution to the Palestinian conflict, the status of Jerusalem and the Iran nuclear deal, but wants more direct dialogue between the EU and the Jewish state.“We want the discussion to happen as it would help to seek compromise on complicated international issues,” Skvernelis said.On Thursday dozens of pro-Palestinian activists waved Palestinian flags and chanted that Netanyahu was “not welcome,” while railing against Lithuania’s warm ties with Israel, outside government buildings in the capital Vilnius, where he held talks with Skvernelis.Netanyahu is meeting Friday with three Baltic prime ministers in his quest to counterbalance European criticism of Israel’s actions in the Palestinian territories and to increase pressure on Iran.Netanyahu will hold talks with Skvernelis, Estonia’s Juri Ratas and Maris Kucinskis of Latvia. He started the day by meeting Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite. On Thursday Netanyahu praised Lithuania for its efforts at Holocaust remembrance. He thanked Skvernelis for being a rare voice in support of Israel within the EU and for his efforts to fight anti-Semitism.Many Israelis have origins in Lithuania, including Netanyahu’s grandmother, who was born in the northern town of Seduva. The prime minister will meet with members of the Jewish community and visit a memorial to Jewish Holocaust victims there.Over 90 percent of Lithuania’s Jews died during the 1941-1944 German occupation at the hands of Nazis and local collaborators.Critics say the country has never fully recognized crimes by Lithuanians during the Holocaust and has continued to honor nationalists who collaborated with the Nazis. It has also prosecuted Jews who fought with partisan forces against the Nazis, including former Yad Vashem chairman Yitzhak Arad.In 2011, Yad Vashem uninvited Lithuanian officials from a memorial ceremony in protest of the prosecutions.Netanyahu should “express Israel’s unequivocal opposition to their ongoing efforts to rewrite the narrative of the Holocaust and promote the canard of equivalency between Nazi and Communist crimes,” Simon Wiesenthal Center Nazi hunter Efraim Zuroff wrote in an op-ed published in the Jerusalem Post Thursday.Earlier this month, leaders of Lithuania’s Jewish community asked authorities in Vilnius to remove a plaque honoring anti-Soviet fighter Jonas Noreika, who killed Jews according to his granddaughter.Netanyahu has been accused by critics of overlooking anti-Semitism and Holocaust distortion in Eastern European countries in order to curry favor and build a pro-Israel bloc within the European Union. On Thursday, Netanyahu praised Skvernelis for the “strong position you’ve taken in forums of the EU on behalf of truth, on behalf of Israel, on behalf of decency.”“Israel is often mistreated by the EU in Brussels, there are many distortions that are leveled at us, and it is refreshing to see that you take a stand of clarity, of truth and of courage, and we discussed how that can be expanded,” Netanyahu added.Netanyahu said he wanted “to achieve a balance in the European Union’s not always friendly relations with Israel.”

PA forces said to thwart West Bank bomb attack against Israeli troops-Large explosive device found near road frequently used by IDF soldiers, Ynet reports; bomb's characteristics match MO of PIJ, Hezbollah-By AFP and TOI staff-AUG 26,18

Palestinian security forces this week thwarted a West Bank bombing attack against Israeli soldiers intended to hamper ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, the Ynet news site reported Friday.Sources told Ynet the PA forces discovered a large bomb composed of gas canisters, explosives and shrapnel near Route 443, on a road frequently used by IDF forces. The explosive device could have potentially caused a large number of casualties. The road connects the Palestinian villages of Beit Liqya and Beit Anan. PA forces defused the bomb and notified Israeli authorities, the report said. The sources noted that the bomb’s characteristics matched the modus operandi of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, as well as Lebanon’s Hezbollah terror group. Israeli security forces were examining both possibilities. They added that the planned attack was likely imminent, in an attempt to destabilize ongoing negotiations on a long-term ceasefire in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the Hamas terror organization.Hamas condemned the PA’s actions, saying it was “surprised by the ongoing security coordination, in light of what the Palestinian people are subjected to under Israeli policies.”In January PA security forces discovered and dismantled 12 improvised explosive devices, each weighing between 20 and 30 kilograms, on a road near Tulkarem. They were apparently intended for use against IDF military vehicles passing the area. The PA later arrested seven Palestinians in connection with the planned attack. They were affiliated with Hamas and some had previously been arrested or interrogated by the PA security forces.Gaza has seen a surge of violence since the start of the violent “March of Return” protests along the border in March. The two sides have fought three wars since 2008.Israeli media have speculated that a deal could entail easing Israel’s blockade of Gaza in exchange for calm on the border and the return of two Israeli citizens and the bodies of two soldiers killed in the 2014 war — all held by Hamas.Israel maintains the blockade is necessary to prevent weapons from reaching Gaza that could be used in attacks. Egypt, the only other country besides Israel that borders the Palestinian enclave, also maintains a blockade on the Strip.

UK says RAF jets interrupted path of Russian plane over Black Sea-YAHOONEWS-Reuters-August 26, 2018

LONDON (Reuters) - British fighter jets interrupted the path of a Russian maritime patrol aircraft over the Black Sea in the second such incident this week, Britain's defense ministry said on Friday. The RAF Typhoons scrambled from Mihail Kogalniceanu air base in Romania on Thursday in response to a Russian Be-12 plane which was heading southwest over the Black Sea from Crimea, the ministry said. The Royal Air Force has deployed Typhoons to the Baltic States in recent years as part of a mission to protect NATO airspace in the region. In the previous incident on Tuesday, it scrambled two typhoons in Romania to shadow two suspected Russian Su-30 Flanker aircraft.Britain's Minister of State for the Armed Forces, Mark Lancaster, spoke about "an ever more assertive Russia" in a speech in London in July.He said the RAF has had to intercept Russian military aircraft more than 80 times over the last decade.(Writing by William Schomberg; editing by Stephen Addison)

China seeks domination, U.S. says, after El Salvador dumps Taiwan-[Reuters]-By Steve Holland and Yimou Lee-YAHOONEWS-August 26, 2018

WASHINGTON/TAIPEI (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday attacked El Salvador's decision to ditch diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favor of China, saying the change was of grave concern to Washington and warning that China was offering economic inducements to seek domination.Self-ruled Taiwan now has formal relations with only 17 countries, almost all of them small and less developed nations in Central America and the Pacific, including Belize and Nauru.Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen this week vowed to fight China's "increasingly out of control" behavior as El Salvador became the third country to switch allegiance to Beijing this year. China views Taiwan as a wayward province, with no right to state-to-state ties.In a statement likely to inflame already strained relations with Beijing, the White House said El Salvador's government had made the decision "in a non-transparent fashion only months before they leave office"."The El Salvadoran government's receptiveness to China's apparent interference in the domestic politics of a Western Hemisphere country is of grave concern to the United States, and will result in a reevaluation of our relationship with El Salvador," it said.Countries wanting to open or expand ties with China to get state-directed investment for short-term economic growth and infrastructure may be disappointed in the long run, the White House said."Around the world, governments are waking up to the fact that China's economic inducements facilitate economic dependency and domination, not partnership," it said.Taiwan has accused China of luring its friends away with offers of generous aid packages. China denies that.Taiwan presidential office spokesman Alex Huang, responding to the White House comment, thanked the United States government for "speaking out for justice"."Taiwan will continue to be a regional force for stability and good, and will never give up our insistence on positive good and democratic freedom because of China's coercion," he said in statement. In Beijing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang urged the United States to "correctly view" its establishment of ties with El Salvador, which he described as "perfectly justified and above board".Lu said China already had diplomatic relations with 25 countries in the Americas, including the United States, and far from negatively affecting the region, China had positively pushed forward economic development and security. Now that it was 26 countries, Lu asked: "Why does this now affect security and development?""We urge the relevant country to respect other countries right to decide on their own affairs and stop their hegemonic activities," he said.Like most other countries, Washington does not have diplomatic relations with Taipei, but is the democratic island's main arms supplier and strongest international backer.China's hostility to Taiwan has grown since Tsai's election two years ago as Beijing fears she wishes to push for the island's formal independence, a red line for China. She says she wants to maintain the status quo but will defend Taiwan's democracy.-'BIG DEAL'-China has stepped up efforts to restrict Taiwan's international presence, including ordering foreign airlines to list Taiwan as part of China on their websites, and has been conducting regular military exercises near the island. The White House added that the United States would continue to oppose China's "destabilization of the cross-Strait relationship and political interference in the Western Hemisphere".The U.S. criticism came as U.S. and Chinese officials ended two days of trade talks with no major breakthrough as their bitter trade dispute escalated with activation of another round of dueling tariffs on $16 billion worth of each country's goods. The U.S. statement was issued about 12 hours after U.S. President Donald Trump met lawmakers about the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act (FIRRMA), aimed at beefing up protection against foreign trade-secret poaching, as well as reviewing real estate transactions near ports or U.S. military installations or other sensitive government sites.Trump was in congratulatory mode over what he considers to be a positive trajectory on U.S. efforts to crack down on such intrusions."This is a very big deal," he said.Previously, Trump said, there were few safeguards."We had, in many cases, no safeguards. Now we have probably the best there is in the world. We'll see if that's good enough," he said."When we see something we don't like, some country is buying something we don't want them to be buying, we stop it. We now have the right to stop it."John Cornyn, a Republican senator from Texas, praised the moves."Mr President, in your administration you are finally taking the big step to oppose the national security threat posed by China," Cornyn said.(Reporting by Steve Holland and Yimou Lee; Additional reporting by Philip Wen and Ben Blanchard in BEIJING; Editing by Neil Fullick and Philip McClellan)

KIEV (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's national security adviser John Bolton said on Friday that U.S. sanctions against Russia would remain in place until Moscow changed its behavior.Bolton was in Kiev to show Washington's support for Ukraine which celebrated the anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union with a military parade on Friday. The United States has imposed sanctions against Russia to punish it for its 2014 annexation of Ukraine's Crimea, support for pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, and meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, something Moscow denies.Critics of President Donald Trump have accused him of being soft on Russia and there is a bi-partisan push in Congress to impose more sanctions on Moscow.Bolton, speaking before a new round of sanctions announced by the State Department took effect, set out what he cast as a tough approach by the administration to sanctions."The sanctions remain in force and will remain in force until the required change in Russian behavior," Bolton told a news conference after talks with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko."I underlined what President Trump said in Helsinki to President (Vladimir) Putin that it was the position of the United States that we did not recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea," he said, referring to a U.S.-Russia summit in Finland last month."Our view and our policy remain as they have been."'MORE TENSION'-The Russian rouble has been pushed steadily lower by U.S. sanctions, the latest of which take effect on Monday, according to a notice posted on Friday in the U.S. Federal Register.Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Friday that the new sanctions, announced earlier this month over a nerve agent attack in Britain, would only create more tension in bilateral relations, the RIA news agency reported. In comments likely to anger Moscow, Bolton said that Kiev had made progress in its efforts to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and advised Ukraine to look for alternatives to Russian natural gas."A lot depends on Ukraine fulfilling the requirements necessary to meet all of the military and political tests to be a NATO member," Bolton said."I would say progress is being made but there is still more to accomplish," he added.Russia strongly opposes NATO expansion towards its western borders and moved to annex Crimea in 2014 after Viktor Yanukovich, Ukraine's Russia-friendly president, was toppled in a popular revolution.Bolton said it was important to resolve the Ukraine crisis and that it would be dangerous to leave the situation as it was in Crimea and eastern Ukraine, where Moscow has backed separatists in their conflict with Kiev.Ukraine stopped buying gas from Russia in November 2015 and now imports gas mostly via Slovakia. Ukrainian energy firm Naftogaz says the gas is "European in origin." Moscow says the gas is still Russian despite Slovakia's intermediary role.Bolton mentioned U.S. liquefied natural gas and other possible replacements to Russian supplies. He said he had told Poroshenko that Moscow should not meddle in Ukraine's presidential vote next year."President Poroshenko and I agreed that we will look at steps that the United States and Ukraine could take to look at election meddling here," he said.(Writing by Gabrielle Tétrault-Farber and Andrew Osborn; Editing by Ros Russell)

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Mount Etna volcano roars into action with ash and lava-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 26, 2018

ROME (AP) — Mount Etna in Sicily has roared back into spectacular volcanic action, sending up plumes of ash and spewing lava.Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV) says that the volcano, which initially "re-awoke" in late July, sprang into fuller action Thursday evening by shooting up chunks of flaming lava as high as 150 meters (500 feet) almost constantly. On Friday, INGV said the action was continuing, feeding ash plumes several hundred meters (yards) into the air above the crater. No evacuations of towns on Etna's slopes were reported.Sicilians farm on the fertile soils of the slopes of Etna. The volcano is also a popular destination for hikers on the Mediterranean island.

Doctor in eastern Congo contracts Ebola in 'dreaded' scenario: WHO-[Reuters]-By Stephanie Nebehay-YAHOONEWS-August 26, 2018

GENEVA (Reuters) - A doctor has become the first probable Ebola case in one of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo's most violence-ridden and inaccessible zones, a scenario "we have all been dreading", the World Health Organization said on Friday.Since the outbreak erupted on Aug. 1, 103 confirmed and probable cases of Ebola have been identified in North Kivu and Ituri provinces, including 63 deaths, Congo's health ministry said in an overnight update.A doctor living in the town of Oicha in North Kivu has been re-hospitalised with Ebola symptoms after his wife was confirmed as having the disease when she traveled to the nearby city of Beni, said Dr. Peter Salama, WHO's head of emergency operations.Oicha is almost entirely surrounded by ADF Ugandan Islamist militia, and there are "extremely serious security concerns" following many civilian killings, he said. Aid workers, priests and government officials are held hostage in the area, he added.More than 100 armed groups operate in all of volatile eastern Congo, including dozens in North Kivu. The doctor's initial test for Ebola - which causes vomiting, hemorrhagic fever and diarrhea - had been negative but fresh results are awaited after retesting, Salama told Reuters. The doctor is among 14 confirmed or probable cases among health workers. So far 97 of the couple's contacts who may have been exposed to the virus have been identified, and vaccination has begun in Oicha, according to Salama."So for the first time really we have a confirmed case and contacts in an area of very high insecurity. It really was the problem we were anticipating and the problem at same time that we were dreading," he told a news briefing.WHO and health experts reached Oicha with armed escort by MONUSCO troops this week from Beni along a road classified as a "red zone" in terms of insecurity, Salama said."We know from that incident now in Oicha we are going to have to operate in some very complex environments due to security and access concerns."Congo has experienced 10 Ebola outbreaks since the virus was discovered on the Ebola River in 1976, altogether killing some 900 people. In another worrying development, angry youths burned down a health center in the village of Manbangu where vaccinations were underway, after learning of a death from Ebola, Salama said.Jessica Ilunga, a Congolese health ministry spokeswoman, later said there had been an incident there but denied that the health center had burned. The health minister had held talks with local authorities to help calm the situation, she said.More than 2,900 people have been vaccinated against Ebola since the outbreak began and another 10,000 doses are currently available, Salama said."We are at quite a pivotal moment in this outbreak in terms of the evolution of the outbreak epidemiologically and in terms of the response," he said.(Reporting and writing by Stephanie Nebehay; additional reporting by Fiston Mahamba in Goma; Editing by Mark Heinrich)

Things are going to break': Hawaii braces for major hurricane-[AFP]-Ronit Fahl-YAHOONEWS-August 24, 2018

Hawaiian Ocean View (United States) (AFP) - Torrential rains pummeled Hawaii on Friday as Hurricane Lane swirled toward the island state, triggering landslides, "catastrophic" flooding and prompting stark warnings from authorities. In its 1200 GMT bulletin, the Honolulu-based branch of the National Weather Service said the now Category Three hurricane was packing winds in excess of 120 miles per hour (195 kilometers per hour).Currently located some 200 miles south of the state capital Honolulu, Hurricane Lane's center was forecast to track over or "dangerously close" to parts of the main Hawaiian islands later Friday and into the night.Brock Long, administrator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), warned of major disruptions to the power grid."Citizens need to realize that we are looking at major hurricane impacts and things are going to break," Long said."We need to set the expectation that the power could go off for quite some time and the infrastructure is going to be heavily impacted."The archipelago's Big Island has already been deluged with "catastrophic flooding," the NWS said.Over two feet of rain have fallen at several locations on the windward side of the Big Island, the National Hurricane Center said, with 30 to 40 inches possible over some areas throughout the state.Emergency teams have set up 16 evacuation centers, with a further 19 due to open later as President Donald Trump, who has declared a state of emergency, urged Hawaiians to hunker down and prepare for the worst."Our teams are closely coordinating with the state and local authorities. You are in our thoughts!" Trump tweeted. Some 1,500 residents have already sought shelter in temporary evacuation centers, mainly in and around Honolulu, said Brad Kieserman, vice president of Disaster Services Operations and Logistics for the American Red Cross."I definitely expect to see an increase in population as the storm continues to approach," he added.- 'Panic mode' -Residents across the state stocked up on water, food, gasoline and emergency supplies as Lane drew nearer."Last couple of days it's been like this -- it's been busy," said Chris, an employee at a gas station in Haleiwa, on the north shore of Oahu island -- the location of the capital Honolulu."We have been just constantly getting cars filling up. Everybody is in a panic mode right now -- everyone is filling up gas, gas cans, propane cans and all that."Sea levels were expected to rise as much as two to four feet above normal tide levels, causing coastal erosion and prompting a storm surge and "large and destructive waves," forecasters said.Surfers could be seen taking advantage of the calm before the storm to get out on their boards one last time before the ocean got too violent.- Flights canceled -United Airlines said it canceled all Friday flights to and from Kahului airport on Maui, the second-largest island. The US Coast Guard said 57,000 US military personnel already stationed in Hawaii were ready to provide logistical and medical support or conduct search and rescue missions operations."Hurricane Lane is not a well-behaved hurricane," Governor David Ige said in a statement as he declared a state of emergency Tuesday on the Big Island."I've not seen such dramatic changes in the forecast track as I've seen with this storm."Hurricanes rarely make landfall in Hawaii and the last major storm to strike the state was nearly three decades ago, when Hurricane Iniki barreled into the island of Kauai, leaving six dead and causing billions of dollars in damage.Federal officials have been working with Hawaiian utility managers to keep a close eye on the power grid, a major vulnerability in Puerto Rico last year when it was hit by Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 storm.Hurricane-related deaths in Puerto Rico have been estimated at as many as 4,600 people, largely because prolonged and widespread power outages and washed out roads prevented access to health care, US researchers said.

Turkey warns military solution in Syria's Idlib will 'cause catastrophe'-[AFP]-Anna MALPAS-YAHOONEWS-August 26, 2018

Moscow (AFP) - Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu warned Russia on Friday that seeking a military solution in Syria's last rebel-held province of Idlib would be disastrous."A military solution there will cause catastrophe," Cavusoglu said at a press conference in Moscow with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, before meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin."Not only for the Idlib region but for the future of Syria, it will cause catastrophe and the clashes may last a long time," he warned.Speculation is increasing that there could be a Russian-backed government assault on the northwestern province, home to Syria's last major rebel stronghold.Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime still holds Idlib's southeastern tip and he has set his sights on retaking control of the region, which borders Turkey, calling this one of his priorities.Cavusoglu warned of the risk heavy fighting would pose to the large civilian population."Civilians will be harmed. Where will the 3.5 million civilians go?" he asked, as Turkey has already taken in more than three million refugees from Syria.- 'Halt refugee influx -Idlib is one of the so-called "de-escalation" zones set up as a result of talks by Russia, Turkey and Iran last year.Cavusoglu stressed the need to keep the de-escalation zone in place "to halt any refugee influx"."It's also important for Turkey because they are on the other side of our border. They pose a threat to us first," he added.Nonetheless rebel-backer Turkey considers "it is very important that those radical groups, terrorists are rendered ineffective," he said.Putin later met both the Turkish foreign and defence ministers in Moscow. In televised comments the Russian leader said that through the efforts of Russia, Turkey and other countries, they had "managed to seriously move forward in settling the Syrian crisis".Yet the situation in Syria remains one of the "burning questions" for Russia, he admitted.Russia's Lavrov on Friday called the situation in Idlib "multi-faceted" and called for separating out "the healthy opposition from terrorist structures"."When the de-escalation zone was created in Idlib, no one proposed using it for terrorists to hide behind the civilian population like a human shield," he said."Especially as they aren't just lying low there. Raids are constantly coming from there as well as firing on the positions of the Syrian army".- Strategic role -The Turkish foreign minister said Ankara would still rely on talks with Russia and Iran, known as the Astana peace process, widely seen as an attempt to circumvent largely fruitless UN talks on Syria. The high-level visit to Russia by Turkish ministers comes as Turkey is feuding with NATO ally United States over an American pastor held for two years on terror charges.US President Donald Trump this month announced sanctions against Turkey that caused the lira to plunge in value.Idlib is a strategically important province adjacent to Latakia, a regime stronghold on the Mediterranean coast that is home to Assad's clan. The jihadist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) alliance controls around 60 percent of Idlib while other Turkey-supported rebel groups hold most of the rest.Analysts say any regime offensive will probably be limited to a small area of Idlib, with a deal between Russia and Turkey likely to determine the fate of the rest of the province.More than 350,000 people have been killed and millions displaced since Syria's war started in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-government protests.Russia began a bombing campaign in support of Assad's regime in September 2015 and has helped him win back large parts of the country.burs-am/ma/klm.
