Liberman warns Assad planning to rebuild large Syrian army after civil war-Defense minister also praises Trump's reimposition of Iran sanctions, saying Tehran was using relief provided by nuke deal not to support its economy but rather to fund terror-By Jacob Magid-TOI-AUG 7,18

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said Tuesday that Syrian dictator Bashar Assad “is not satisfied” with regaining control of southern Syria and plans to rebuild the Syrian military into an even larger force than it was on the eve of the civil war.“We see the Syrian army, which is not satisfied with taking control of all the Syrian territory, but is clearly building a new, large-scale land army that will return to its previous dimensions and beyond,” Liberman said, speaking to reporters after watching a military exercise of the IDF’s Armored Corps in the Golan Heights.Liberman said that the Armored Corps, which was instrumental in stopping the Syrian surprise assault in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, remained essential to Israel’s defense. “The Armored Corps was and will be the main force of the IDF in every ground operation, especially here in the north,” he said.Last month, Syrian government forces reached the frontier with the Israeli Golan Heights after capturing territory from rebels and Islamic State fighters. It was the first time government forces had taken up positions along the frontier since an uprising against Assad swept through the country in 2011, becoming a seven-year civil war. Islamic State fighters later seized territory from rebels along the frontier region.Israel has sought to avoid direct involvement in the Syrian conflict but acknowledges carrying out dozens of airstrikes there to stop deliveries of advanced weaponry to its Lebanese enemy Hezbollah. It has also pledged to prevent Iran from entrenching itself militarily in Syria, and a series of recent strikes that have killed Iranians in Syria have been attributed to Israel. With Syrian forces now in close proximity, there have already been clashes between the two armies and Israel has insisted that the Syrian military respect the 1974 ceasefire agreement reached between Jerusalem and Damascus after the previous year’s Yom Kippur War. The agreement limits the forces each side can keep in the border region. On July 24, a Syrian Sukhoi fighter jet entered Israeli airspace over the Golan Heights, traveling approximately two kilometers (one mile) before it was downed when the IDF fired two Patriot interceptor missiles. On July 13, a Patriot shot down a Syrian army drone that was flying over the demilitarized zone separating Israel from Syria. Two days earlier, a Syrian military unmanned aerial vehicle penetrated some 10 kilometers (six miles) into Israeli territory before it too was shot down by a Patriot missile. The IDF said it had allowed the drone to fly so deeply into Israeli territory as it was not immediately clear if it belonged to the Russian military.-Liberman on Iran sanctions-Liberman also again hailed the US decision to reimpose sanctions against Iran. The sanctions went into effect Tuesday.“The renewal of the sanctions on Iran is especially necessary for those who are fighting against terrorism,” he said Tuesday, arguing that the billions of dollars Tehran received in relief as a result of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action did not go to the Islamic Republic’s economy, but rather toward funding its Revolutionary Guard, the al-Quds Force, Hezbollah, Shiite militias in Iraq and Houthi militias in Yemen.“Therefore, we strongly support the decision of President Trump,” the defense minister said, urging the White House to follow through with its second round of sanctions, slated to go into effect on November 5.Judah Ari Gross contributed to this report.

Seeking ‘WORLD PEACE,’ Trump says US won’t trade with those who trade with Iran-Saying he's reimposed 'most biting sanctions ever' on Islamic Republic, US president tweets: 'I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less!'-By SUSANNAH GEORGE and Zeke Miller-TOI-AUG 7,18

WASHINGTON (AP) — US President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned that any country doing business with Iran will not trade with the US as the first set of US sanctions against Iran that had been eased under the landmark nuclear accord went back into effect. The sanctions, under an executive order signed by Trump, target financial transactions that involve US dollars, Iran’s automotive sector, the purchase of commercial planes and metals including gold.More US sanctions targeting Iran’s oil sector and central bank are to be reimposed in early November. In an early-morning tweet, Trump said the reimposition of sanctions means, “Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States.”“I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less!”The stiff economic sanctions ratchet up pressure on the Islamic Republic despite statements of deep dismay from European allies, three months after Trump pulled the US out of the international accord limiting Iran’s nuclear activities.Trump declared the landmark 2015 agreement had been “horrible,” leaving the Iranian government flush with cash to fuel conflict in the Middle East. The Iran sanctions have officially been cast. These are the most biting sanctions ever imposed, and in November they ratchet up to yet another level. Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States. I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 7, 2018-Iran accused the US of reneging on the nuclear agreement, signed by the Obama administration, and of causing recent Iranian economic unrest. European allies said they “deeply regret” the US action. As the sanctions loomed Monday, Trump said in a statement, “We urge all nations to take such steps to make clear that the Iranian regime faces a choice: either change its threatening, destabilizing behavior and reintegrate with the global economy, or continue down a path of economic isolation.”Trump warned that those who don’t wind down their economic ties to Iran “risk severe consequences.”The Europeans didn’t like any of it.Despite Trump’s claims, the accord “is working and delivering on its goal” of limiting Iran’s nuclear program, said a statement by European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and the foreign ministers of France, Germany and the United Kingdom. The ministers said the Iran deal is “crucial for the security of Europe, the region and the entire world,” and the European Union issued a “blocking statute” Monday to protect European businesses from the impact of the sanctions.A senior administration official, briefing reporters under ground rules requiring anonymity, said the United States is “not particularly concerned” by EU efforts to protect European firms from the sanctions.Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Iran still can rely on China and Russia to keep its oil and banking sectors afloat. Speaking in a television interview, he also demanded compensation for decades of American “intervention” in the Islamic Republic.Months of uncertainty surrounding the sanctions have already further hurt Iran’s economy. The country’s rial currency has tanked, and the downturn has sparked protests across the nation. The “Trump Administration wants the world to believe it’s concerned about the Iranian people,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a statement posted to Twitter. But, he said, the reimposed sanctions would endanger “ordinary Iranians.”“US hypocrisy knows no bounds,” he said.US officials insisted the American government stands with the people of Iran and supports many of their complaints against their own government.National security adviser John Bolton said Iran’s leadership is on “very shaky ground,” but he insisted economic pressure from the Trump administration is not an attempt at “regime change.”US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said sanctions are an important pillar in US policy toward Iran and will remain in place until the Iranian government radically changes course.“They’ve got to behave like a normal country. That’s the ask. It’s pretty simple,” said Pompeo, en route Sunday from a three-nation trip to Southeast Asia.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the sanctions symbolize “the determination to block Iran’s regional aggression as well as its continuous plans to arm itself with nuclear weapons.”He called on the countries of Europe to join the US, saying, “The time has come to stop talking; the time has come to do.”The US has long designated Iran as the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism, Pompeo noted Sunday, adding that the Islamic Republic cannot expect to be treated as an equal in the international community until it halts such activities. He said that “there’s no evidence today of a change in their behavior,” and in the meantime “we’re going to enforce the sanctions.”

North Korean foreign minister visits Iran as US sanctions take effect-Trip by Ri Yong Ho comes as both Tehran and Pyongyang face American pressure over their nuclear programs-By AFP-TOI-AUG 7,18

TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met with his North Korean counterpart Ri Yong Ho on Tuesday, on the same day the US reimposed nuclear-related sanctions on the Islamic Republic.Zarif welcomed Ri and a team of officials at the foreign ministry in Tehran, but no statement was made to reporters.Ri is on a two-day visit to Tehran, and is due to meet with President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday.Fars news agency said the two sides discussed “bilateral relations and regional issues in the Middle East,” without giving further details. The visit coincided with the United States reimposing sanctions on Iran after US President Donald Trump abandoned a 2015 multilateral nuclear deal in May. Trump said the deal did not do enough to curb Iran’s nuclear development and criticized it for not addressing the country’s ballistic missile program or support for regional terror groups and militias. The US is currently also pushing Pyongyang to scrap its nuclear capabilities after Trump and North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un agreed a vague commitment to “denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula” at their landmark summit in June.A UN panel of experts has expressed concern over military collaboration between Iran and North Korea in the past.In a 2017 report, it noted the presence of designated North Korean weapons traffickers living in Tehran and the similarity between missile designs in the two countries.Ri was present alongside a high-level Iranian delegation at a meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement in Baku, Azerbaijan, in April, according to Pyongyang’s official KCNA news agency.A North Korean delegation also attended Rouhani’s inauguration in August 2017.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

IDF shells Gaza post after soldiers come under fire; 2 Hamas gunmen said killed-Hamas military wing says both dead men were members, threatens revenge; 6 other Palestinians said wounded in latest violence on Gaza border-By TOI staff-AUG 7,18

An IDF tank shelled a Hamas post on Tuesday, reportedly killing two Hamas fighters, after shots were fired from there at Israeli soldiers patrolling the Gaza Strip border.“In response to terrorists shooting at IDF forces in the northern Gaza Strip, an IDF tank attacked the position belonging to the Hamas terror group where the attack originated,” the army said. “There were no casualties to our forces.”The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said two Palestinian were killed in the strike. The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing, said both Palestinians were members of the group, and identified them as Ahmad Marjan and Abd al-Hafiz al-Silawi, both 23.Another six were injured in the Israeli strike, Palestinian media reported. The IDF released footage showing the Hamas men firing on the soldiers and the shell hitting the post.“The IDF will take action against any offensive intent and every attempted attack on our forces,” the army said, adding that it held Hamas responsible for all violence coming out of Gaza.Hamas threatened to avenge their deaths.Hamas warned Israel that it would pay for the attack, without elaborating.“The resistance cannot allow the occupation to impose a policy of bombing sites and targeting fighters without paying the price,” it said in a statement. The latest IDF strike in Gaza came amid reports that Israel and Hamas could be nearing a truce that would see a halt in the cross-border attacks and the easing of the blockade of the Strip. On Monday, two Palestinians were injured in an Israeli airstrike targeting a group launching flaming balloons into southern Israel.Incendiary balloons and flaming kites launched by Gazans have wreaked havoc in the Israeli communities surrounding Gaza since April, sparking fires that have scorched thousands of acres of farmlands and countryside.Hamas’s political leadership met on Monday with top officials in its military to discuss its preparedness for battle with Israel, according to a report in the Ynet news site, highlighting the group’s skepticism of reaching a long-term ceasefire. The meeting came a day after Israeli political and military brass huddled for several hours, but did not release any concrete decisions. Following the meeting, a statement from the cabinet said “the IDF is prepared for any scenario.” It gave no indication if any decision on the truce had been made.Palestinian sources told Ynet that the Hamas meeting took place in response to the Israeli statement and that Hamas leaders warned they could inflict casualties that the Israeli public and government would not be able to tolerate.A senior Hamas source in Gaza said he was unaware of the meeting.Hamas, a terror group that officially seeks Israel’s destruction, is the de facto ruler of the Strip.Earlier Monday, the London-based, Saudi-owned Asharq al-Awsat newspaper, reported that the first stage of the potential truce would see Israel fully reopen the Kerem Shalom goods crossing and increase the fishing zone off the Gaza coast. It added that in return, Hamas official said the Strip’s rulers would commit to halting all attacks against Israel. The second phase of the deal would include Hamas-Israel talks for a prisoner exchange agreement, and the implementation of long-proposed humanitarian projects in Gaza, the report said.

Minister: Israel and Egypt share equal responsibility for Gaza-Ze'ev Elkin urges Arab world to solve humanitarian crisis; official in Cairo hits back, says beleaguered Palestinian enclave is exclusively 'Israel's problem'-By TOI staff-AUG 7,18

Environmental Affairs Minister Ze’ev Elkin said that Egypt bears as much responsibility for the situation in the Gaza Strip as does Israel, drawing censure from an official in Cairo, who said the beleaguered Palestinian enclave was exclusively “Israel’s problem.”“As far as we are concerned, after Israel left Gaza, responsibility should not have been imposed on us,” Elkin told the Ynet news site on Monday. “Egypt is no less responsible.”“We left Gaza. If someone strikes at us from Gaza, they will get hit back. Let the Arab world resolve the internal, humanitarian problem of the Gaza Strip. Why should we bear responsibility for this?”Elkin’s comments came as Egyptian and UN officials were working to secure a long-term ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas aimed at ending the current flareup in violence in the Strip. An Israeli official close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declined to say whether Elkin’s remarks reflected the government’s position. There was also no official response from Cairo, but Reuters reported that Egyptian officials have privately expressed concern at Elkin’s call to assume more responsibility for the Palestinian territory. One official said Cairo would stand firm in its position that Israel is alone responsible for the beleaguered Palestinian enclave.“We are willing to do what we can to calm down the situation in Gaza or work on Palestinian reconciliation,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “But we will not take over from Israel in Gaza. It’s Israel’s problem.”Conditions in the Gaza Strip deteriorated significantly after Hamas, an Islamic terror group sworn to Israel’s destruction, seized the territory from the  Palestinian Authority in 2007. Since then, repeated attempts at intra-Palestinian reconciliation have failed and both Israel and Egypt have maintained a blockade on the territory to prevent Hamas from smuggling in weapons and material to construct fortifications and attack tunnels. The Palestinian Authority also imposes sanctions on Gaza and has withheld payments for electricity and government workers. As a result, many of Gaza’s nearly 2 million residents lack electricity, drinkable water, and food and the coastal enclave teeters on the verge of an economic and infrastructure collapse. In response to the recent flareup in violence and arson attacks in Gaza, Israel levied further border restrictions, banning fuel imports the Kerem Shalom goods crossing.According to reports, easing the Gaza blockade is one of the terms of a possible Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal being brokered by Cairo. On Monday, the London-based, Saudi-owned Asharq al-Awsat newspaper said the first stage of the ceasefire proposed by Egypt would see Israel fully reopen Kerem Shalom and increase the fishing zone off the Gaza coast. A Hamas official said that in return, the terror group would commit to halting all attacks against Israel. On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with the security cabinet to discuss the proposal. The several-hour meeting reportedly ended without any clear conclusions and the ministers did not vote on the framework.Israel has said there will not be any deal unless Hamas releases the bodies of two Israeli soldiers it is holding and two other Israel civilians.

Still raging: Largest wildfire in California history grows-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 7, 2018

LAKEPORT, Calif. — Wildfires tearing through trees and brush, rampaging up hillsides and incinerating neighbourhoods : The places and names change, but the devastation is showing signs of becoming the new normal in California.Twin fires in Northern California being treated as one are the largest wildfire in state history and by Tuesday had scorched 455 square miles (1,178 square kilometres ) — nearly the size of the city of Los Angeles. The Mendocino Complex fire north of San Francisco was still growing this week as it broke the record set eight months ago. In December, the Thomas Fire killed two people, burned 440 square miles and destroyed more than 1,000 buildings in Southern California. The Mendocino Complex, which is 34 per cent contained, has been less destructive to property than some of the other wildfires in the state because it is mostly raging in remote areas. But officials say it threatens 11,300 buildings and some new evacuations were ordered over the weekend as the flames spread.Hotter weather attributed to climate change is drying out vegetation, creating more intense fires that spread quickly from rural areas to city subdivisions, climate and fire experts say. But they also blame cities and towns that are expanding housing into previously undeveloped areas.More than 14,000 firefighters are battling more than a dozen major blazes throughout California, state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott McLean said."I can remember a couple of years ago when we saw 10 to 12,000 firefighters in the states of California, Oregon and Washington and never the 14,000 we see now," he said.Crews made progress over the weekend against one of the two blazes in the Mendocino Complex with help from water-dropping aircraft, Cal Fire operations chief Charlie Blankenheim said in a video on Facebook. But the other one is growing after spreading into the Mendocino National Forest and then spreading south to Colusa County.Meanwhile, a new fire erupted south of Los Angeles in Orange County on Monday and quickly spread through the chaparral-covered ridges of the Cleveland National Forest. Campgrounds and homes in Holy Jim Canyon were ordered evacuated. The fire sent up an enormous pillar of smoke and ash.Crews also gained ground against another Northern California wildfire that has destroyed more than 1,000 homes in and around the city of Redding. It was nearly halfway contained, Cal Fire said. That wildfire about 225 miles (360 kilometres ) north of San Francisco started more than two weeks ago by sparks from the steel wheel of a towed-trailer's flat tire. It killed two firefighters and four residents and displaced more than 38,000 people. The fires in Northern California have created such a haze of smoke in the Central Valley that Sacramento County health officials advised residents to avoid outdoor activities for the entire week.Another blaze that ignited last week in the Sierra Nevada has damaged a historic Northern California resort in the Stanislaus National Forest. The nearly century-old Dardanelle Resort has sustained massive structural damage, though the details were unclear, the Sacramento Bee newspaper reported.___The Associated Press.

THIRD ANGEL - TO DR DOCTORIAN-We are five angels from  the five continents. of the world.
Then one of the angels with wings showed me Europe from one end to the other - from the north all the way down to Spain and Portugal. In his hand he had a scale of measurement. I saw him fly over Europe, and I heard the words, I am grieved. I am grieved. Unrighteousness, uncleanness, ungodliness - all over Europe. The sin has risen to heaven. The Holy Spirit is grieved. I saw the rivers of Europe flooding and covering millions of houses. Millions drown. After seeing this, I read the news a few weeks ago. Czechoslovakia had the worst flooding ever. I also heard that the big river in China is in tremendous danger of thousands of houses being destroyed in flooding. I didn't know all this news until after I had seen the vision and heard what the angels told me.Suddenly I heard earthquakes all over Europe.  Countries that have had no earthquakes shall be shaken, said the angel. And suddenly, in my spirit, I saw the Eiffel Tower in Paris crumbling falling down. A great part of Germany destroyed. The great city of London - destruction everywhere. I saw floods all over Scandinavia. I looked to the south and saw Spain and Portugal passing through hunger and great destruction. Many will die from hunger all over Spain and Portugal.

Wildfires torment Portugal, Spain as France feels the heat-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 7, 2018

LISBON, Portugal — More than 1,200 firefighters supported by 19 aircraft battled a major wildfire in southern Portugal for a fifth straight day Tuesday, as firefighters questioned the wisdom of the strategy to counter the flames.Authorities had hoped lower overnight temperatures would allow services to finally contain the blaze, which was 95 per cent under control on Monday. But officials blamed its continuing spread on strong, gusting winds fueling the flames, which are racing through dry and largely inaccessible woodland. The fire came within 500 metres of the fire department in Monchique, a town of 2,000 people about 250 kilometres (155 miles) south of Lisbon, as officials evacuated scores of houses.Emergency services say 29 people have been hurt in the wildfire. An unknown number of homes — believed to number in the dozens, according to local reports — located in the forested hills have burned down. The firefighting effort drew criticism, with some claiming poor organization is thwarting the operation. Monchique was identified as a high risk area months ago.Firefighting is co-ordinated by the Civil Protection Agency, a government body overseen by the Ministry for the Interior, which oversees national defence .The National Association of Professional Firemen and the Professional Firemen's Trade Union issued a joint statement saying that the government's recent reorganization of firefighting capabilities need to be reassessed and rethought. The organizations asked for a "very urgent" meeting with the Minister of the Interior. The minister, Eduardo Cabrita, told reporters authorities were switching co-ordination of the Monchique fire from the local Civil Protection Agency to the department's national operational command in Lisbon. He declined to criticize the firefighting operation, saying the effort had been "notable."Portugal beefed up its wildfire response over the winter after 109 people died last year in forest blazes amid a severe drought.Vitor Vaz Pinto, the Civil Protection Agency's district commander, said the weather forecast around Monchique was " unfavourable ," with a gusting wind from the north, known as a "nortada."Temperatures were forecast to reach 35 C (95 F) — normal for August in southern Portugal. The Iberian peninsula endured some record heat last weekend, with temperatures exceeding 45 C (113 F), which parched large areas.Spanish emergency services were fighting Tuesday a wildfire near Valencia, on the Mediterranean coast, with almost two dozen aircraft. The high temperatures moved northward to France. The hottest weather was expected in central and northeastern France, with temperatures that could reach 40 C (104 F).Barry Hatton, The Associated Press.

As death toll on Indonesia's Lombok tops 100, thousands wait for aid-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Kanupriya Kapoor-August 7, 2018

KAYANGAN, Indonesia (Reuters) - The death toll from a powerful earthquake that hit Indonesia's tourist island of Lombok topped 100 on Tuesday as rescuers found victims under wrecked buildings, while thousands left homeless in the worst-affected areas waited for aid to arrive.A woman was pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed grocery store in the north, near the epicenter of Sunday's 6.9 magnitude quake, the second tremor to rock the tropical island in a week. That was a rare piece of good news as hopes of finding more survivors faded and a humanitarian crisis loomed for thousands left homeless by the disaster in the rural area and in desperate need of clean water, food, medicine and shelter.Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesman of Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) put the toll at 105, including two on the neighboring island of Bali to the west, where the quake was also felt - and the figure was expected to rise.Lombok had already been hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake on July 29 that killed 17 people and briefly stranded several hundred trekkers on the slopes of a volcano.Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes. In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.THOUSANDS SCATTERED ON HILLS-Few buildings were left standing in Kayangan on the island's northern end, where residents told Reuters that as many as 40 died. Some villagers used sledgehammers and ropes to start clearing the rubble of broken homes, but others, traumatized by continued aftershocks, were too afraid to venture far from tents and tarpaulins set up in open spaces. There has been little government relief for the area, where the greatest need is for water and food, as underground water sources have been blocked by the quake and shops destroyed or abandoned.About 75 percent of the north has been without electricity since Sunday, officials said, and some communities were hard to reach because bridges were damaged and trees, rocks and sand lay across roads cracked wide open in places by the tremor."Thousands of people moved to scattered locations," Sutopo told a news conference in Jakarta."People have moved to the hillsides where they feel safer. It's difficult for help to reach them. We advise people to come down and move closer to the camps."Aid agency Oxfam said it was providing clean drinking water and tarpaulin shelters to 5,000 survivors, but the need was much greater, with more than 20,000 estimated to have been displaced."Thousands ... are under open skies in need of drinking water, food, medical supplies, and clothes," it said in a statement. "Clean drinking water is scarce due to the extremely dry weather."Villagers in Pemenang on Lombok's northwestern shoulder heard cries for help emerging from the mangled concrete of a collapsed minimart on Tuesday and alerted rescuers. Four hours later they pulled out alive Nadia Revanale, 23."First we used our hands to clear the debris, then hammers, chisels and machines," Marcos Eric, a volunteer, told Reuters. "It took many hours but we're thankful it worked and this person was found alive."Rescuers heard a weak voice coming from under the wreckage of a nearby two-storey mosque, where four people were believed to have been trapped when the building pancaked."We are looking for access. We have a machine that can drill or cut through concrete, so we may use that. We are waiting for heavier equipment," Teddy Aditya, an official of the Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), told Reuters.TOURIST EXODUS-Thousands of tourists have left Lombok since Sunday evening, fearing further earthquakes, some on extra flights added by airlines and some on ferries to Bali.Officials said about 4,600 foreign and domestic tourists had been evacuated from the three Gili islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, where two people died and fears of a tsunami spread soon after the quake.Saffron Amis, a British student on Gili Trawangan - the largest of the islands fringed by white beaches and surrounded by turquoise sea - said at least 200 people were stranded there with more flowing in from the other two, Gili Air and Gili Meno."We still have no wi-fi and very little power. Gili Air has run out of food and water so they have come to us," she told Reuters in a text message, adding later that she had been taken by boat to the main island en route to Bali.(Additional reporting by Angie Teo and by Agustinus Beo Da Costa,; Fransiska Nangoy and Fanny Potkin in JAKARTA; Writing by John Chalmers; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A string of Taliban attacks in Afghanistan have killed 12 people, including four women who died in the crossfire during a shootout between insurgents and soldiers, while an errant NATO airstrike killed nine Afghan police, Afghan officials said Tuesday. The Taliban attacked a military checkpoint in the western Farah province, killing four troops and wounding six, according to Mohammad Naser Mehri, the provincial governor's spokesman. The attack in Bala Buluk district started late Monday night and lasted for several hours. Mehri said Afghan airstrikes killed 19 Taliban fighters and wounded 30. "The Taliban were pushed back and the situation is under control now," he said.In the eastern Logar province, the four women were killed and four children were wounded in the crossfire during a shootout near Puli Alim, the provincial capital, said Hasibullah Stanikzai, a provincial council member. He said an investigation is underway to determine which side caused the civilian casualties. In a separate attack in Logar, the Taliban assaulted police checkpoints in the Azrah district, setting off heavy fighting and causing the police to call for help.Nasrat Rahimi, the deputy spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said NATO carried out an airstrike in the area that mistakenly killed nine police and wounded another 14. He said NATO and the Afghan government have launched a joint investigation into the incident.Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, a spokesman for NATO, confirmed that it carried out an airstrike in support of Afghan forces in Azrah. "We are aware of varying and unconfirmed reports, and are looking into the matter further," he added.Rahimi said around 30 Taliban fighters were killed in the battle. The Taliban have not commented on any of the recent attacks. The Taliban have stepped up attacks across the country since NATO and the U.S. formally ended their combat mission in 2014, and have seized control of several districts. An Islamic State affiliate has carried out dozens of deadly attacks in recent years, mainly targeting security forces and minority Shiites. On Monday night, the Taliban attacked a police checkpoint in the eastern Ghazni province, killing four police and wounding five, said Arif Noori, spokesman for the provincial governor. He said the battle in Jaghatu district lasted for three hours.Separately, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for an attack that killed an Afghan soldier and wounded three troops and a civilian on Sunday in the eastern city of Jalalabad, the provincial capital of Nangarhar.___Associated Press writer Maamoun Youssef in Cairo contributed to this report.
