Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by phone Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin as Israel continues to press its demands that there be no Iranian military presence in Syria.The call came Friday with an evacuation effort underway to transfer rebel fighters and civilians from a southwestern sliver of Syria near the Golan Heights to opposition territory further north.The transfers come under a surrender deal agreed this week between Russia and Syrian rebels in Quneitra province that will see the sensitive zone on the Israeli border fall back under regime control.“Prime Minister Netanyahu noted that Israel would continue to act against the establishment of an Iranian military presence in Syria,” his office said in a statement on the call.The Kremlin said Putin and Netanyahu discussed regional developments “with an emphasis on the Syrian settlement process.”Netanyahu has spoken and met with Putin regularly in recent years about Syria and military coordination between the two countries there, most recently during his visit to Moscow last week. Israeli authorities have denied entry to Israel of a Dutch activist, in light of her participation in efforts to boycott Israel.Interior Minister Aryeh Deri announced the decision in a statement, saying it came in light of a recommendation from Public Security and Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan, who is also charged with battling the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign.A press release from Deri’s office said that the activist, Lydia de Leeuw, was refused entry, “among other reasons, because she advances boycotts and consistently takes part in activities against the state [of Israel].”“I will exercise my authority and prevent entry to Israel by any person who seeks to harm the state,” Deri said.“This woman acts consistently to boycott and harm Israel, and I therefore prevented her entry,” he added. “This will be the case in the future, as well, when it comes to boycott activists who try to enter Israel.”“The rules have changed,” Erdan said in a statement. “Like any normal country, Israel will not stand by in the face of those who would harm it.”“Those who promote a boycott of Israel and seek to harm its citizens are unwelcome here,” he said.Erdan’s office said de Leeuw “gives frequent speeches” at BDS events and was active in BDS Netherlands.Earlier this month, Israeli officials barred a Jewish pro-Palestinian activist from entering the country and deported her over her support for a boycott of the country.The case shined a light on a relatively new law that allows the interior minister to deport or deny entry to supporters of the BDS movement.

Toronto police say they've now recovered and identified the remains of all eight men allegedly murdered by Bruce McArthur.Acting Insp. Hank Idsinga says after examining around 100 properties in the Greater Toronto Area, police don't have any evidence to suggest McArthur killed more people.Idsinga says police have now identified the remains of Majeed Kayhan, the only victim whose remains had previously not been found.He says Kayhan's remains were recovered from the ravine behind a property where the remains of seven other men were found in planters earlier in the year.McArthur, 66, worked as a landscaper at that property.He has been charged with eight counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of men with ties to Toronto's gay community, all of whom went missing between 2010 and 2017.Idsinga says that while police are continuing to study unsolved homicides and outstanding missing person's reports, there is currently no evidence to suggest McArthur's alleged involvement in any additional killings.The Canadian Press.

Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister is standing by his government's plan to impose its own "made in Manitoba" carbon tax despite a deleted tweet from Ontario premier Doug Ford that seemed to suggest otherwise.In the tweet, which has since been deleted, Ford said Pallister had "reaffirmed his government's commitment to working together to ensure that no carbon tax is ever imposed on the people of our great provinces" during this week's Council of the Federation talks in New Brunswick.The tweet was later changed to say the pair discussed "shared priorities for our country."In a conference call with media Thursday, Pallister blamed the tweet on "confusion on the part of the Ontario team.""What you have to do there is give Premier Ford a break," Pallister said."I wouldn't make a big deal out of it, I would simply ask for you to give consideration to a fact that this a brand new team of people, just come together, and they're doing the best they can with the learning curve we all go through in life."They just became government a matter of a few days ago and so these are the kinds of things that happen."Manitoba's plan-Ottawa has ordered the provinces to impose a tax of $10 per tonne this year, and increase that amount by $10 each year until it reaches $50 in 2022. The Trump administration indicated it was prepared to work with the Hamas terror group which controls the Gaza Strip if it first recognizes Israel’s right to exist and renounces violence.US Middle East envoys Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt, together with US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, wrote in an op-ed published in the Washington Post late Thursday that the US and other countries were prepared to offer humanitarian aid to the beleaguered Strip, but were stymied by Hamas’s commitment to fighting Israel.On Friday Hamas rejected the offer, dismissing the US envoys as “spokesmen of the Israeli occupation.”“International donors are conflicted: Should they try to help the people directly, at the certain risk of enriching terrorists, or withhold funding to Hamas and watch the people it is supposed to govern suffer?” the Americans wrote.“There are engaged, interested parties with resources who are ready to get to work. Yet without real change accompanied by reliable security, progress is impossible,” they said in the opinion piece. “If Hamas demonstrates clear, peaceful intentions — not just by word but, more importantly, by deed — then all manner of new opportunities becomes possible.”The offer apparently backtracks from previous US demands that the terror group allow the Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank from Ramallah, to retake power in the Gaza Strip. A senior member of the Hamas terror group which governs the Gaza Strip gave an address last week in which he called to rid “Palestine of the filth of the Jews” and vowed it would happen by 2022.In a video of the July 12 rally, aired on Al-Jazeera and translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, former Hamas interior minister Fathi Hammad said: “We are looking forward to two important things which are within sight.”The first was “the cleansing of Palestine of the filth of the Jews, and their uprooting from it,” which he promised would happen imminently. “Four years, my brothers… By 2022 we will be rid of them,” he said.The second goal Hammad called for was the establishment of an Islamic caliphate “once the nation has been healed of its cancer — the Jews.”Speaking a day before an IDF officer was wounded when a grenade was hurled at him by Palestinian assailants and a 15-year-old Palestinian was killed during clashes at the Gaza border fence, Hammad described the weekly “March of Return” protests against Israel as peaceful, but vowed violence.“The fact that we participate in the peaceful March of Return does not mean that we have abandoned the military path of jihad,” he said. “Our finger is on the trigger and our plants are operating and working day and night. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by phone Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin as Israel continues to press its demands that there be no Iranian military presence in Syria.The call came Friday with an evacuation effort underway to transfer rebel fighters and civilians from a southwestern sliver of Syria near the Golan Heights to opposition territory further north.The transfers come under a surrender deal agreed this week between Russia and Syrian rebels in Quneitra province that will see the sensitive zone on the Israeli border fall back under regime control.“Prime Minister Netanyahu noted that Israel would continue to act against the establishment of an Iranian military presence in Syria,” his office said in a statement on the call.The Kremlin said Putin and Netanyahu discussed regional developments “with an emphasis on the Syrian settlement process.”Netanyahu has spoken and met with Putin regularly in recent years about Syria and military coordination between the two countries there, most recently during his visit to Moscow last week. Israeli authorities have denied entry to Israel of a Dutch activist, in light of her participation in efforts to boycott Israel.Interior Minister Aryeh Deri announced the decision in a statement, saying it came in light of a recommendation from Public Security and Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan, who is also charged with battling the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign.A press release from Deri’s office said that the activist, Lydia de Leeuw, was refused entry, “among other reasons, because she advances boycotts and consistently takes part in activities against the state [of Israel].”“I will exercise my authority and prevent entry to Israel by any person who seeks to harm the state,” Deri said.“This woman acts consistently to boycott and harm Israel, and I therefore prevented her entry,” he added. “This will be the case in the future, as well, when it comes to boycott activists who try to enter Israel.”“The rules have changed,” Erdan said in a statement. “Like any normal country, Israel will not stand by in the face of those who would harm it.”“Those who promote a boycott of Israel and seek to harm its citizens are unwelcome here,” he said.Erdan’s office said de Leeuw “gives frequent speeches” at BDS events and was active in BDS Netherlands.Earlier this month, Israeli officials barred a Jewish pro-Palestinian activist from entering the country and deported her over her support for a boycott of the country.The case shined a light on a relatively new law that allows the interior minister to deport or deny entry to supporters of the BDS movement.

(Reuters) - Divers on Friday pulled the last four bodies from the wreckage of a "duck boat" that sank in a storm in a Missouri lake, killing 17 people in one of the deadliest U.S. tourist incidents in recent years.The World War Two-style amphibious vehicle was filled with 31 passengers including children when a microburst storm hit Table Rock Lake outside the tourist city of Branson, Missouri, on Thursday. A video of the incident showed it battered by waves.Wendy Doucey, an office manager at the Stone County sheriff's office, said that divers had recovered the four bodies from the sunken duck boat. The vehicle was 80 feet (24 m) under water."It's important that we find out for sure what events did occur," Governor Michael Parson said at a Friday morning news conference. "Today it's just still early."The incident began around 7 p.m. (0000 GMT) on Thursday after thunderstorms rolled through the area, when two duck boats were out on the lake, officials said. Both headed back to shore but only one made it."From what I understand there was life jackets in the duck," Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader told the press conference. He declined to answer questions about whether passengers on the duck had been wearing them at the time.The National Transportation Safety Board and U.S. Coast Guard are investigating, officials said. Rader noted that the boat's captain survived the sinking but the driver did not.Officials did not comment on the identities or ages of the other people who drowned.'NOTHING YOU COULD DO' Jennie Carr witnessed the last moments of the tourist duck boat while on a lake cruise aboard the Showboat Branson Belle."The one that sunk, it was having trouble. Toronto police say they've now recovered and identified the remains of all eight men allegedly murdered by Bruce McArthur.Acting Insp. Hank Idsinga says after examining around 100 properties in the Greater Toronto Area, police don't have any evidence to suggest McArthur killed more people.Idsinga says police have now identified the remains of Majeed Kayhan, the only victim whose remains had previously not been found.He says Kayhan's remains were recovered from the ravine behind a property where the remains of seven other men were found in planters earlier in the year.McArthur, 66, worked as a landscaper at that property.He has been charged with eight counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of men with ties to Toronto's gay community, all of whom went missing between 2010 and 2017.Idsinga says that while police are continuing to study unsolved homicides and outstanding missing person's reports, there is currently no evidence to suggest McArthur's alleged involvement in any additional killings.The Canadian Press.

Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister is standing by his government's plan to impose its own "made in Manitoba" carbon tax despite a deleted tweet from Ontario premier Doug Ford that seemed to suggest otherwise.In the tweet, which has since been deleted, Ford said Pallister had "reaffirmed his government's commitment to working together to ensure that no carbon tax is ever imposed on the people of our great provinces" during this week's Council of the Federation talks in New Brunswick.The tweet was later changed to say the pair discussed "shared priorities for our country."In a conference call with media Thursday, Pallister blamed the tweet on "confusion on the part of the Ontario team.""What you have to do there is give Premier Ford a break," Pallister said."I wouldn't make a big deal out of it, I would simply ask for you to give consideration to a fact that this a brand new team of people, just come together, and they're doing the best they can with the learning curve we all go through in life."They just became government a matter of a few days ago and so these are the kinds of things that happen."Manitoba's plan-Ottawa has ordered the provinces to impose a tax of $10 per tonne this year, and increase that amount by $10 each year until it reaches $50 in 2022. The feds say they will impose its price on any province that doesn't match it.In Manitoba, the Pallister government has introduced legislation that will create a carbon tax with a flat rate of $25 per tonne and require the province to set five-year greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.Manitoba signed on to Ottawa's climate-change plan in February — just days before a deadline that would have seen the province lose roughly $67 million in federal funding from Ottawa's Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund — and despite the fact the province's plan flouts the federal government's target of $50 per tonne in five years.At $25 per tonne, Manitoba will exceed federal targets for the first two years, but Ottawa has not signalled what specific action it might take if Manitoba is not compliant after that.Environment Minister Catherine McKenna has said Ottawa will review each province's plan annually starting in 2019."I'm comfortable because we are going to be assessing every province's plan, and it's not just price. It's accessing the system that they come up with, and we are going to be doing that every year," McKenna told CBC News in February."But Manitoba has said they want to sign on to the plan and I think that's really important." Ontario backs court challenge -Under the newly elected Ford government, Ontario announced Thursday it will join a Saskatchewan court reference case challenging the federal government's right to impose a carbon tax on provinces that don't comply with its climate change plan.Manitoba was reluctant to sign on to the federal government's plan until recently. It sought a legal opinion on the federal government's jurisdiction, but did not go as far as Saskatchewan has in initiating a court reference.Pallister stuck by Manitoba's plan Thursday telling reporters he isn't concerned the province might be left at a competitive disadvantage if neither of its neighbours puts a carbon tax in place."I believe the prime minister is sincerely going to invoke his own plan on Saskatchewan and Ontario and if he does, actually Manitoba would be at an advantage," he said."The federal government said they don't particularly like our plan in some respects, but that frankly doesn't matter to me, we've developed a plan that we think will work best for Manitoba environmentally and economically and we'll remain steadfast in bringing that plan forward."Pallister has threatened to take the federal government to court should they try to raise Manitoba's carbon tax above the flat rate he is proposing.The federal government has given the provinces until September to have their carbon tax plans in place.
