Sculpted head of mystery biblical king found in Israel-[Associated Press]-ILAN BEN ZION-YAHOONEWS-June 11, 2018

JERUSALEM (AP) — An enigmatic sculpture of a king's head dating back nearly 3,000 years has set off a modern-day mystery caper as scholars try to figure out whose face it depicts. The 5-centimeter (2-inch) sculpture is an exceedingly rare example of figurative art from the Holy Land during the 9th century B.C. — a period associated with biblical kings. Exquisitely preserved but for a bit of missing beard, nothing quite like it has been found before. While scholars are certain the stern bearded figure wearing a golden crown represents royalty, they are less sure which king it symbolizes, or which kingdom he may have ruled.Archaeologists unearthed the diminutive figurine in 2017 during excavations at a site called Abel Beth Maacah, located just south of Israel's border with Lebanon, near the modern-day town of Metula.Nineteenth-century archaeologists identified the site, then home to a village called Abil al-Qamh, with the similarly named city mentioned in the Book of Kings.During the 9th century B.C., the ancient town was situated in a liminal zone between three regional powers: the Aramean kingdom based in Damascus to the east, the Phoenician city of Tyre to the west, and the Israelite kingdom, with its capital in Samaria to the south.Kings 1 15:20 mentions Abel Beth Maacah in a list of cities attacked by the Aramean King Ben Hadad in a campaign against the Israelite kingdom."This location is very important because it suggests that the site may have shifted hands between these polities, more likely between Aram-Damascus and Israel," said Hebrew University archaeologist Naama Yahalom-Mack, who has headed the joint dig with California's Azusa Pacific University since 2013.Yahalom-Mack's team was digging through the floor of a massive Iron Age structure in the summer of 2017 when a volunteer who arrived for the day struck pay dirt. The layer where the head was found dates to the 9th century B.C., the epoch associated with the rival biblical kingdoms of Israel and Judah. In a rare move, archaeologists and curators at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem rushed to put the piece on public display. A detailed report is set for publication in the June edition of the journal Near Eastern Archaeology.Eran Arie, the Israel Museum's curator of Iron Age and Persian archaeology, said the discovery was one of a kind. "In the Iron Age, if there's any figurative art, and there largely isn't, it's of very low quality. And this is of exquisite quality."The royal figurine is made of faience, a glass-like material that was popular in jewelry and small human and animal figurines in ancient Egypt and the Near East."The color of the face is greenish because of this copper tint that we have in the silicate paste," Yahalom-Mack said. But a crucial clue for identifying it as a Near Eastern monarch was its "very interesting hairdo," she said. The bearded figure's hair is pulled back in thick locks that cover the ears, and is held in place by a striped diadem of gold. Its hairstyle looks similar to the way ancient Egyptians depicted neighboring Near Eastern peoples in art."The guy kind of represents the generic way Semitic people are described," she said.Because Carbon-14 dating cannot give a more exact date for the statue's creation other than sometime in the 9th century, the field of potential candidates is large. Yahalom-Mack posited it could be kings Ben Hadad or Hazael of Damascus, Ahab or Jehu of Israel, or Ithobaal of Tyre, all characters appearing in the biblical narrative."We're only guessing here, it's like a game," she said. "It's like a hello from the past, but we don't know anything else about it."As scholars debate whether the head was a stand-alone piece or part of a larger statue, the Hebrew University team is set to restart digging this month at the spot where the mystery king's head was found.

Britain: March for jailed far-right activist draws thousands-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 11, 2018

LONDON (AP) — A far-right lawmaker from the Netherlands joined thousands of people in central London Saturday to demand freedom for a British commentator who was jailed for contempt of court after he broadcast outside a criminal trial for the second time.Video footage showed activists marching with "Free Tommy" placards and Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders telling the crowd: "We will not be silenced." A small number of demonstrators pushed police and tried to breach metal barricades in front of the British prime minister's office."There were scenes of violence which saw bottles, metal barriers and other objects thrown at officers," London's Metropolitan police said-Five officers were injured, none seriously, the police department said. Five people were arrested on various charges, including one arrest for possession of an offensive weapon. The subject of the Saturday event was Tommy Robinson, the pseudonym of 35-year-old Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. Robinson founded the English Defence League, an anti-Muslim protest group. He was arrested May 25 after livestreaming from outside a child sexual exploitation trial.Reporting restrictions were in place for the trial to protect jurors' impartiality — a common practice in Britain. Robinson previously was convicted of contempt of court in May 2017 for broadcasting at a rape trial and given a three-month suspended sentence. The judge in that case told him that he would be imprisoned if he committed "a further contempt of court by similar actions."Robinson was sentenced to 13 months in jail after he pleaded guilty on May 29 to contempt of court and breaching the terms of his suspended sentence. He also has previous convictions for assault, fraud and other offenses.

Rainbow flags fly across Europe at Gay Pride parades-[AFP]-YAHOONEWS-June 10, 2018

Bucharest (AFP) - Thousands of people took to the streets to support LGBT rights in cities across Europe on Saturday, with marchers waving rainbow flags and condemning discrimination in all its forms.Peaceful parades took place across European cities including the capitals of Italy, Latvia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and Poland. In Bucharest, some 3,000 people marched through the city centre with many celebrating a ruling made by the EU's top court earlier this week. The European Court of Justice ruled in favour of Romanian gay man Relu Coman's right to have his US husband Robert "Clai" Hamilton live with him in Romania."Clai and I are two people who did not accept discrimination. If more of us did the same, the world would be better," Coman told AFP at the march.Romania does not recognise same-sex marriage and had argued that Hamilton was not entitled to EU residency rights awarded to spouses. The European court ruling means that same-sex partners of EU citizens have the right to live in any member state whatever their nationality, even in countries that do not recognise gay marriage. In Warsaw, tens of thousands marched for the annual "Equality Parade" to protest discrimination not just against LGBT people but also women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.Organisers said 45,000 people took part, while the town hall gave a lower estimate of 23,000.- 'Love knows no boundaries' -"I come from a small town and first marched for equality 10 years ago, without telling my parents," Dominika Wroblewska said at the Warsaw parade."It's very moving for me, especially since I came out a year ago," she said. Her partner Alicja Nauman said she was marching "because I want to live in a place where all love is accepted, because love knows no boundaries"."The situation in Poland is bad because same-sex couples cannot marry or adopt children."The "Baltic Pride" parade in Latvia's capital Riga included members of the gay community from fellow Baltic states Estonia and Lithuania. One of the organisers, Kaspars Zalitis, told AFP that about eight thousand people marched."Latvia is in last place in the European Union when it comes to the rights of LGBT people," Zalitis said."There is no protection against hate crimes, no respect for trans people, that's why we think this issue is greatly urgent."About 30 people protested before the start of the parade in Riga, following a call by a rightwing group for a demonstration against "the promotion of homosexuality".In Rome, thousands also marched Saturday just days after Italy's new families minister from the far-right League party caused a storm, saying homosexual families do not legally exist."It's very important that we're here, because we need to respond and show that it's not true that we don't exist," said Andrea, 27.

In sea of rainbow, Greeks celebrate Pride-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-June 10, 2018

ATHENS (Reuters) - In a sea of colorful balloons, thousands of Greeks marked Pride on Saturday, celebrating diversity and the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.More than 10,000 people assembled in Athens's Syntagma Square, normally a regular venue of rage for protesters over financial reforms for the indebted country. But on Saturday it was a vista of rainbow flags, dancing and loud pumping music."For us, Pride is a source of celebration but simultaneously protest," said participant Yiorgos Kounanis, a political scientist. "We seek the same rights as heterosexuals, we pay the same taxes, have the same obligations and (therefore) demand equal rights," he said.(Reporting by Lefteris Papadimas, writing by Michele Kambas, editing by Louise Heavens)

Gay Pride colours Rome despite Italy lurch to the right-[AFP]-YAHOONEWS-June 11, 2018

Rome (AFP) - Thousands of people took to the streets of Rome on Saturday to celebrate Gay Pride just days after Italy's new families minister caused a storm by saying that homosexual families do not legally exist. The annual march in the Italian capital comes at a tense time in the country after a coalition government took power including the far-right, nationalist League party, which has a long history of anti-gay rhetoric.Lorenzo Fontana, 38, was sworn in as Minister for Families and the Disabled on June 1 alongside other members of government formed by the anti-establishment Five Star Movement and the League. In an interview with major daily Corriere Della Sera the next day, Fontana responded to a question about how his ministry would deal with families with homosexual parents, referred to in Italy as "rainbow families"."Rainbow families exist, do they?" he replied, before qualifying his statement by saying that Italian law does not recognise such families.Legislation allowing same-sex civil unions came into force in Italy in June 2016, but a provision that would have granted non-biological parents some parental rights was removed in order to get the law passed.Italian law only allows heterosexual couples access to fertility treatments. However a Turin city council in April registered the birth of the son of a lesbian couple, who was conceived via IVF in Denmark.Last month the city also registered the birth of another child of a same-sex couple.Fontana is a League politician and comes from the right of the party. In 2016 he spoke at a meeting of a pro-life association about how gay marriage, gender theory and "mass immigration" were all working together to "cancel out our community and our traditions".He is also involved in a controversy over his dealings with Monica Cirinna, a senator with the centre-left Democratic Party and author of the bill that legalised civil unions for same-sex couples in Italy in 2016.Shortly after being pictured shaking the hand of Cirinna, Fontana blocked her on Twitter despite having never interacted with Cirinna on the platform."I'm really shocked because I'd never written to him or cited his account on Twitter," Cirinna said in an interview with left-leaning daily La Repubblica."I hope that the decision to block me was the unhappy act of a social media editor."

Trump threatens U.S. allies on trade as he exits G7 summit-[Reuters]-By Roberta Rampton and Jean-Baptiste Vey-YAHOONEWS-June 11, 2018

LA MALBAIE, Quebec (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday accused other countries of "robbing" the United States on trade and threatened to stop doing business with them altogether as he pushed his "America First" agenda at a Group of Seven nations summit.Trump, who angered Washington's top allies last week when he imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico, issued a broad indictment of global trade, with swipes at the G7 and India."We're like the piggy bank that everybody is robbing," he said at a press conference before making an early exit from the two-day summit in La Malbaie, Quebec, where he met with leaders of Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Japan."This isn’t just G7. I mean, we have India, where some of the tariffs are 100 percent ... And we charge nothing," he said. "And it's going to stop. Or we'll stop trading with them."Trump, who repeated that his tariffs are meant to protect U.S. industry and workers from unfair international competition, said he had suggested to the other G7 leaders that all trade barriers, including tariffs and subsidies, be eliminated. He also denied the summit had been contentious, a remark that contradicted what one G7 official described as an "extraordinary" exchange on Friday in which Trump repeated a list of trade grievances, mainly concerning the EU and Canada. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the official's remarks about Trump.Trump's counterparts in the G7 have been scrambling this week to try to find some semblance of consensus with Washington on trade and the other key issues that have formed the basis of the 42-year-old organization.German Chancellor Angela Merkel said there was broad agreement among G7 leaders that tariffs and other trade barriers should be reduced, though she acknowledged that differences with the United States remained."These are jointly shared principles, although the pitfalls lie in the details," she said in a press conference, adding that she expected a joint G7 statement on trade would be issued at the end of the summit.French President Emmanuel Macron said the agreement would be a good first step and represented the G7 nations' desire to stabilize the situation."Nevertheless, I do not consider that with a declaration all is obtained and it is obvious that we will have in the coming weeks, the next months, to continue to work," Macron told reporters.Canada and the EU have denounced the U.S. tariffs as illegal and unjustified and Ottawa has proposed levies on a range of U.S. goods next month while the EU has pledged its own retaliatory measures. The spat has financial markets worried about tit-for-tit escalation that could lead to a full-blown global trade war.Investors are also concerned about the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which Trump has threatened to terminate. Canada and Mexico, the other members of the 1994 pact, have been frustrated by the slow pace of talks to renegotiate NAFTA.On Saturday, Trump repeated his desire to have a sunset clause in an updated NAFTA deal, a demand that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has rejected.-DISAGREEMENT OVER RUSSIA-The U.S. president left before the end of the summit and will fly to Singapore for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which he described as a "mission of peace."Apart from trade, there also was disagreement at the summit over the G7's position on climate change and Trump's suggestion that Russia be re-admitted to the group.Russia was suspended in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. Merkel said on Saturday there must first be progress on a Ukraine peace plan before there is any talk about readmitting Moscow.Trump's presidency has been clouded by a federal investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and possible collusion by his campaign. Both Moscow and Trump have denied the allegations.(Additional reporting by Jean-Baptiste Vey, Andrea Hopkins, David Ljunggren, Giselda Vagnoni, Jan Strupczewski and William James in La Malbaie and Jonathan Landay in Washington; Writing by Paul Simao; Editing by Stephen Powell and Susan Thomas)

Colorado wildfire spreads as winds strengthen-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-June 10, 2018

(Reuters) - A stubborn Colorado wildfire grew by around a fifth on Saturday, consuming sparsely populated land as low humidity and high winds left firefighters bracing for it to spread, officials said."Weather will be a concern this weekend as critical fire weather conditions are expected," fire officials said in a Saturday email update on the so-called 416 Fire. "Southwest to west winds will be strengthening across southwest Colorado this weekend."The Haines Index, used by firefighters to assess the stability and dryness of air over fires, is at its maximum level of six, officials said."This indicates that there is a high potential for extreme fire behavior, intensity, and growth," they added. As of Saturday morning, the Colorado fire remained at 10 percent contained, but it had grown by about 1,500 acres (607 hectares) since Friday, mostly in less inhabited areas to the west that officials said they were monitoring while they concentrate on protecting structures to the east, north and south.Officials said they ramped up their response to the fire, which had scorched 8,691 acres, up from 7,180 the day before, to a maximum Type 1 from Type 2, implying additional resources to battle the blaze. In 2017, a near-record 10 million acres (4 million hectares) were burned in U.S. wildfires, the National Interagency Coordination Center said. The same agency issued a June forecast for "above-normal significant large fire potential" this month in Southern California and the Four Corners region of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah, because of a deepening drought and ample fuel for wildfires.Firefighters have kept the Colorado fire to the west of Highway 550 and away from structures, county commissioners in La Plata County, Colorado, said in a Saturday Facebook post. Fire officials said in the Saturday update that Highway 550 was closed from mile marker 32 to 47 and pilot cars were escorting traffic through there.A new blaze about 13 miles to the west, known as the Burro fire, prompted U.S. Forest Service officials on Saturday to close part of the Colorado trail in the San Juan National Forest.(Reporting by Peter Szekely, Editing by Rosalba O'Brien)

Bomb kills two, injures 20 in Iraq's Diyala province: security sources-[Reuters]-By Adam Hadi-YAHOONEWS-June 11, 2018

BAQUBA, Iraq (Reuters) - At least two people were killed and 20 were wounded after a bomb went off on Saturday at a market in the Iraqi town of Khalis in Diyala province, security sources said.No further details were immediately available on who was targeted or who was responsible for the blast, which happened a before sunset when Muslims break their fast during the holy month of Ramadan.Diyala is a mixed province where both Sunni Arabs and Shi'ite Arabs live.Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December. But security officials have said the hardline militant group is likely to wage an insurgency in Iraq after its self-proclaimed caliphate collapsed and the militants were dislodged from all the territory they held in the country.A local official said earlier this week that the militants had become active again in areas between the Diyala and the neighboring Salahuddin province.(Reporting by Adam Hadi; writing by Ahmed Aboulenein; editing by Louise Heavens.)

Jordan's king, EU foreign policy chief review ailing economy-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 11, 2018

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — King Abdullah II and visiting EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini have discussed Jordan's economic challenges, meeting just days after protests against proposed tax increases brought down the kingdom's prime minister. The royal court said Saturday that the king and Mogherini reviewed reforms and economic programs meant to address the crisis.Incoming Prime Minister Omar Razzaz has said he would scrap the planned tax increases and try to come up with a new proposal in consultations with different groups. The old plan had been criticized as unfairly targeting the poor and the middle class.Still, Jordan remains under pressure from the International Monetary Fund to carry out economic reforms and get a grip on rising public debt, in part caused by regional crises such as the influx of Syrian refugees.

Former U.S. Senate staffer charged with lying to FBI over contacts with media-[Reuters]-By Mark Hosenball-YAHOONEWS-June 11, 2018

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A former U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee staffer appeared in federal court on Friday on charges of lying to FBI agents in a case that has raised concerns about media freedoms.Prosecutors said James Wolfe, 57, who worked for the committee as director of security for three decades, lied to FBI agents in December about his contacts with four reporters.A spokesman for prosecutors said Wolfe did not enter a plea at a brief court hearing in Baltimore and was released on bail. He is to appear in court again on Tuesday in Washington. As the Senate committee's security chief, Wolfe, 57, was responsible for safeguarding all classified information in the committee's possession. The indictment against Wolfe is the latest effort by President Donald Trump's administration to charge officials who leak classified information to the media. The tactics used by the FBI in the Wolfe investigation, which included collecting communications between Wolfe and specific journalists, drew criticism from media and civil liberties groups."Journalists must be able to protect their confidential sources," the Committee to Protect Journalists said, adding that this was the "first known incident" in Trump's presidency in which prosecutors collected such data from reporters. As part of its Wolfe investigation, investigators secretly seized a New York Times reporter's phone and email records, the newspaper said on Friday. The reporter, Ali Watkins, previously had a three-year romantic relationship with Wolfe, who stopped working for the Congress in December and retired in May, the Times said.Watkins had previously worked at the Buzzfeed website and a story she wrote for Buzzfeed in April, 2017 was identified by prosecutors as one of two articles which they said were linked to information provided by Wolfe. In that story, Watkins reported that Trump campaign advisor Carter Page had met with and passed documents to a Russian intelligence operative in New York City in 2013.Page has denied any involvement in possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.Trump denies his campaign received help from Moscow. Florida shooting survivors sue police over response tactics-[Reuters]-By Joey Roulette and Gina Cherelus-YAHOONEWS-June 10, 2018

ORLANDO, Fla./NEW YORK (Reuters) - More than two dozen survivors of a deadly 2016 Florida nightclub shooting sued the city of Orlando and 30 police officers on Thursday, claiming law enforcement failed to protect their rights during an hours-long hostage standoff with the gunman. The lawsuit, filed two years after the second-deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman in U.S. history, echoes criticisms of an armed school safety officer in Florida who remained outside a high school where a gunman killed 17 students and educators. The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified financial damages, claims unnamed law enforcement officers violated the rights of 26 survivors and the families of six people killed in the June 2016 Pulse nightclub attack. A gunman claiming allegiance to Islamic State killed 49 people during the gay club's popular Latin night. It also names as a defendant Adam Gruler, an Orlando police officer who had been providing security at the club the night of the shooting.Police responding to 911 calls entered the club minutes after the 2 a.m. shooting and rescued some people, then withdrew when the gunman retreated into a bathroom, leading to an hours-long hostage standoff that ended when officers broke through the wall of the room the gunman was hiding in and shot him dead."We deserved to be rescued sooner by law enforcement officers who made decisions to wait," Keinon Carter, a plaintiff in the lawsuit who now uses a wheelchair as a result of his injuries in the attack, told a news conference.U.S. police responding to mass shootings have long followed a tactic of gathering outside a location where a gunman is reported, and moving in when they can assess and minimize the chance of officers or additional civilians being shot.It is unusual to see that strategy challenged in court as a civil rights claim, said Norman Siegel, former director of the New York Civil Liberties Union."They'd have to prove there was affirmative obligation by the city and the police department to protect the safety of the people in the club," Siegel said.Orlando's city government and police department in a joint statement Thursday declined to comment on the lawsuit, saying they have not had time to review it. Gruler also declined to comment. The Pulse attack stood as the deadliest U.S. mass shooting until October 2017, when a gunman opened fire on a country music festival in Las Vegas, killing 58 people.(Writing and additional reporting by Gina Cherelus in New York; Editing by Scott Malone and Jonathan Oatis)
